Forget Cannes, York is where the film industry is shining brightest, writes Lisa Byrne
When you think of film festivals, the glamorous array of stars promenading along The Croisette in Cannes or the cool alternative kids gathering at Utah’s Sundance annual event may immediately spring to mind. But for the past 15 years York has hosted the BAFTA-Qualifying Aesthetica Film Festival, which has become the UK’s leading screen and media event. The incredible success of this event is down to its Director, New Yorker Cherie Federico, and her dedicated team who work tirelessly to help inspire and motivate possible future BAFTA and Oscar winners.
Speaking to Absolutely, Cherie said she was thrilled by the festival’s growth. “The scale is unprecedented. Aesthetica has become the beating heart of the British film and television industry as the

country’s most influential decision-makers converge on York to debate, define and decide the future of screen content.”
It makes sense that The Ivy in St Helen’s Square – a restaurant synonymous with the creative industry where many acclaimed actors such as Sir Gary Oldman and Dame Joan Collins have dined – will host one of the festival’s most exclusive events called Women in Film: In conversation with Kai-Lu Hsiung, the Global Managing Director of Ridley Scott Associates. Kai-Lu will discuss how she moved from being a receptionist to becoming the head of one of the most successful film making companies in the world.
York and our county have often played host to incredible actors, directors and producers including Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta Jones and Johnny Depp, who fell completely in love with the city and was often spotted in The Evil Eye bar. This year’s festival combines film, comedy, games, VR, podcasts, masterclasses and a city-wide Fringe. Talking about her passion project, Cherie adds: “This is not just a festival, it’s a national platform for the future of storytelling, drawing audiences, creators and industry leaders together in a single, city-wide cultural moment.”
The Aesthetica Film Festival 2025 runs from 5th to 9th of November. For more information visit as .co.uk

Hannah East: from Yorkshire swimmer to sports host, social media star and stand-up sensation
When Hannah East steps on stage this autumn to deliver the second leg of her sold-out debut stand-up tour Express Yourself, it will mark yet another milestone in a career that has taken her from poolside victories in Yorkshire to broadcasting at the world’s biggest sporting events, and now into the world of comedy where she has become one of the UK’s freshest, most relatable voices.
The story of Hannah East is not simply one of reinvention. It is the story of a Yorkshirewoman whose warmth, work ethic, and resilience have carried her through the highs and lows of sport, broadcasting, and motherhood. Whether behind a Sky Sports microphone, on the BBC’s cycling coverage, or on Instagram dressed in one of her now-famous comedy wigs, Hannah has always connected with audiences by being unapologetically herself.
YORKSHIRE BEGINNINGS
Hannah was born and raised in Yorkshire, a part of the country that shaped her values and her outlook. Growing up in a sporting family, she discovered her natural talent in the swimming pool at an early age. Training in local leisure centres
and competing at county level, Hannah was not only a strong swimmer, but also an athlete with remarkable drive.
Her competitive spirit earned her recognition as one of Yorkshire’s standout young swimmers. She broke records in the pool and quickly became known for her dedication to fitness and performance. Even now, long after leaving professional sport behind, that competitive Yorkshire grit can be seen in her comedy career: whether it is the discipline of gigging late at night after caring for young children, or the determination to grow a loyal online following from scratch, Hannah’s work ethic remains rooted in her early sporting life. Yorkshire’s influence goes deeper than sport. In interviews, Hannah has often credited her upbringing in the county with giving her a strong sense of humour, shaped by the dry wit and no-nonsense attitude so associated with the region. This sense of humour would later prove invaluable as she transitioned from the high-pressure world of sports punditry into comedy.
The pivotal turning point in Hannah’s professional life came in 2008. Fresh out of university, she auditioned for Sky 1’s revival of Gladiators. Competing
against 10,000 other contestants, Hannah impressed with her athleticism and charisma, making it all the way to the final. It was during the semi-finals that fate intervened. Standing alongside former England striker and Gladiators co-host Ian Wright, she was encouraged to read the autocue as part of a light-hearted behindthe-scenes moment. Hannah did so with surprising ease, and Wright said she should pursue a career in presenting. That single piece of encouragement lit a spark that has defined the next two decades of her life. Within a few years, Hannah was presenting sport on some of the UK’s most prestigious platforms. Her career reads like a highlights reel of modern sport: Sky Sports’ PGA EuroPro Tour, ITV’s The Darts Show, BBC’s Tour of Britain, MUTV’s weekly football coverage, the England Netball international series, and both the London 2012 and Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Hannah’s broadcasting style reflected the qualities that first shone through on Gladiators: warmth, approachability, and a deep respect for the athletes she was covering. She never sought to dominate the conversation, instead creating space for experts and competitors to shine. Viewers connected with her because she was both knowledgeable and relatable.

"IF WE DON'T LAUGH ABOUT IT, WE WOULD PROBABLY CRY"
By 2018, Hannah had added another string to her bow: stand-up comedy. Starting on the grassroots circuit, she cut her teeth gigging in pubs and small clubs, honing her craft in front of live audiences who could be supportive one night and unforgiving the next.
But it was in 2024, after years of juggling live gigs with family life, that her comedy career took o in an unexpected way. Hannah began posting short sketches online, capturing the chaos of motherhood in bite-sized reels that could be shared, laughed over, and recognised instantly by other parents.
Her videos struck a chord. With brutal honesty, self-deprecating humour, and a knack for physical comedy, she tackled everything from sleepless nights and leaky nappies to the unglamorous realities of postpartum life. It was the kind of material that many parents joked about privately, but rarely said out loud in public.
The result was a viral success. Within months she had amassed more than 250,000 followers on Instagram and a further 63,000 on TikTok. Her content was not polished to perfection but intentionally raw and real – an antidote to the airbrushed world of Instagram parenting.
With her online sketches selling out comedy clubs, it was only a matter of time before Hannah took the plunge into a full-scale tour. Express Yourself – her debut UK-wide stand-up show – premiered earlier this year and immediately struck a nerve.
The show is a hilarious, heartfelt exploration of the realities of parenting. From pregnancy and labour to breastfeeding and beyond, Hannah shines a spotlight on the unspoken truths of motherhood, armed with wigs, props, and an arsenal of side-splitting impressions. Audiences responded with overwhelming enthusiasm. The initial tour dates sold out quickly, leading to the announcement of an extended autumn run in 2026.
Speaking about the extension, Hannah says: “After the initial dates sold out so quickly, I knew I needed to do a second leg. I am so excited to spend the evening with other sleep-deprived parents; this show is all about the comedy side of early stages of parenting, which are tough. We are all winging it – if we don’t laugh about it we would probably cry!”
The show promises new material, more wigs, celebrity send-ups, and plenty of laugh-out-loud moments that every parent will recognise.
Alongside her stand-up, Hannah has expanded her media presence into podcasting. Together with fellow comedian and parenting personality Louise Boyce, she co-hosts weekly podcast No Parental Guidance
The podcast o ers a refreshingly unfiltered look at parenting, blending hilarious anecdotes with moments of genuine insight. It has become a hit among listeners tired of curated “perfect parent” accounts, providing a safe space to admit that parenting can be chaotic, overwhelming, and often absurd.
Despite her transition into comedy and broadcasting, Hannah has never lost her passion for sport and fitness. She continues to run an online coaching business, helping people maintain healthy lifestyles through exercise and training – a continuation of the sporting journey that began in Yorkshire swimming pools.
It is this multifaceted career – sports pundit, coach, comedian, podcaster, presenter – that makes Hannah such a unique figure in British entertainment. She refuses to be confined to one box, constantly reinventing herself.
Hannah East will be taking to the stage on 5th November at The Glee Club in Leeds, and 7th November at She eld’s The Foundry. See more at hannaheast.com

Zoë Salmon, Carriageworks Theatre’s Programme Manager, reflects on two decades of entertaining culture lovers in Leeds and beyond
Q Carriageworks Theatre is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year – what does this milestone mean to you and the team?
A Reaching 20 years feels really special. The arts industry has faced its fair share of challenges over the past two decades, from financial pressures to the pandemic, so to still be here, welcoming thousands of people through our doors every year, feels like an achievement worth celebrating. During Covid, it seems people rediscovered just how important the arts are through picking up old hobbies, learning something new, or simply realising how much they missed live experiences. For us, this anniversary is about harnessing that enthusiasm and passion for theatre, and making sure it continues for the next 20 years and beyond.
Q Looking back, how has the theatre evolved since it first opened in 2005?
A Our programme is more inclusive than ever. We started as a home for community theatre in Leeds, and that is still a hugely important part of who we are, but we’ve also grown a professional programme. Our audiences have grown too: our very first panto in 2005 welcomed around 9,000 people and in 2025 we’re expecting over 20,000. It shows how much appetite there is for theatre in Leeds and how far we’ve come.
Q Leeds is known for its vibrant cultural o er – what makes the city such an exciting place for theatre and live performance?
A Leeds is a brilliant melting-pot of creatives. We’ve got world class institutions like Leeds Playhouse producing incredible work and Leeds Heritage Theatres showcasing some of the biggest touring productions, but also grassroots institutions like Slung Low @ the Holbeck, Seven Arts and Interplay Theatre presenting new voices and fresh ideas. There’s a real sense of collaboration too; for example, we’re proud to be a venue partner for Transform Festival, which brings exciting international work into the city. All together it makes Leeds a really inspiring place to be part of the arts industry.
Q What do you think attracts audiences specifically to Carriageworks Theatre?
A I think it’s the sense of community. Our audiences often say it feels less intimidating than bigger venues, and that the closeness to the stage makes everything feel more personal. Plus, with a ordable ticket prices, we’re able to welcome a wide mix of people, from seasoned theatre fans to families making their very first trip.
Q How do you engage with the local community?
A LeedsCAN and CYTM give people the chance to take to the stage themselves, while partnerships with groups like the fostering network, Leeds Children’s Hospital and Angels of Freedom help us to reach communities who might otherwise face barriers. We’re always looking for ways to ensure everyone in Leeds can feel that the Carriageworks Theatre is their theatre too.
Q Christopher’s Christmas is designed for very young children and is Makaton Friendly – how important is it to o er inclusive programming like this?
A It’s hugely important. We want as many families as possible to be able to enjoy the magic of theatre at Christmas. All Topsy Turvey Theatre productions are gentle, relaxed and interactive, and the use of Makaton means children with additional needs feel included, rather than excluded. We’ve had such positive feedback from families who say it makes them feel more comfortable coming to the theatre. It also helps young audiences grow up understanding and celebrating di erences, which is something we’re really passionate about.
Q Finally, what does 2026 hold in store?
A We’ll be building on what we do best, creating a welcoming, inclusive programme that o ers something for everyone. Our aim is to keep growing that sense of community and making sure Carriageworks continues to be a place where people feel at home.

A quintet of other venues showing why Leeds is an entertainment hotspot
As the Carriageworks Theatre marks its 20th anniversary, it’s a reminder that Leeds’ cultural life has long been sustained by a constellation of performance spaces –each with its own character, history, and audience. From grand Victorian playhouses to rough-and-ready music clubs, here are five other iconic entertainment venues that have helped shape the city’s creative spirit.
Opened in 1878, the Leeds Grand Theatre has been called “a great lady of the north”, and it remains one of the city’s most impressive cultural landmarks. Designed by James Robinson Watson and George Corson, the Grand fuses Romanesque and Scottish baronial styles, with a hint of Gothic, making it stand out on New Briggate. For nearly a century and a half,

it has hosted everything from West End transfers to opera and ballet, cementing its role as a home for high culture in Leeds.
If the Grand is Leeds’ theatrical grande dame, then the City Varieties Music Hall is its cheeky younger sibling. Tucked away on Swan Street, it opened in 1865 and has a claim to being the nation’s oldest surviving music hall still in use. The venue is steeped in history: stars of Victorian vaudeville trod its boards, and in the 20th century it became famous nationwide as the home of BBC television’s The Good Old Days. With its horseshoe balcony, intimate stage, and lovingly restored interior, the Varieties o ers an atmosphere that feels both nostalgic and alive. Today, it thrives as a space for stand-up comedy, cabaret, and family shows – proof that variety really never went out of fashion.

Leeds’ entertainment o ering isn’t just about heritage. Since opening in 2013, the first direct arena has transformed the city’s status as a destination for major music and sporting events. With a capacity of 13,000, it was the UK’s first purpose-built “fan-shaped” arena, ensuring better sightlines and acoustics than many of its peers. Global superstars from Bruce Springsteen to Beyoncé have performed there, placing Leeds firmly on the international touring circuit.
Not every iconic venue is vast. The Wardrobe, a basement bar and performance space in the city’s cultural quarter, has built its reputation on intimacy and eclecticism. Since opening in 1999, it has been a launchpad for up-and-coming comedians – everyone from Sarah Millican to James Acaster has played here – and a haven for jazz, soul, and hip-hop fans.
A relative newcomer, the Belgrave Music Hall has quickly become a Leeds institution since opening in 2013. Housed in a former children’s nursery built in the 1930s, it blends three floors of activity: live music, art exhibitions, food, and one of the city’s best rooftop terraces. Musically, it has hosted everything from indie and electronic acts to experimental jazz, providing a platform for both international names and local talent.

Raby Castle to open for new Christmas experience for the first time in 50 years

Raby Castle will be opening its doors during the festive period for the first time in five decades to show the castle decorated for Christmas, designed by custodian and creative director, Lady Barnard. This will be a chance for visitors to experience how the Vane family enjoyed Christmas at the Castle and see the rooms beautifully decorated as they would have been in the past, the family’s traditional gifts, flowers and sumptuous Christmas trees.
The journey will take visitors through eight rooms on the ground floor, telling the story of Christmas Day at the castle, from the early morning thrill of opening a Christmas stocking to an evening of elegant dining and Christmas games, featuring an impressive table setting ready for a spectacular festive meal.
Lady Barnard says: “I have had a wonderful time collecting these beautiful pieces from Christmas past as well as my present family traditions, bringing to life our personal and honest
telling of how our ancestors would have celebrated the day right here at Raby Castle all those years ago.”
This special seasonal installation, available on selected dates from Saturday 22nd November to Sunday 4th January, will also include never-before-seen items from the collections at Raby Castle. Lady Barnard adds: “I have been discovering even more about Raby’s past and delving into cupboards to find bits and pieces which haven’t been seen in years. Our family would have made many of the decorations themselves and foraged in the grounds for foliage, and it’s been a pleasure emulating this beautiful and sustainable way of decorating.
“This is the first Christmas we’ll be decorating the castle and for those that know Raby will appreciate that working at such scale can be daunting, but the team and I have given it careful thought over the year and feel we have really complemented the essence of Raby. I’m also keen for it to have a personal touch for our visitors –that’s why my team and I will be dressing the rooms ourselves. I hope our visitors see the personal touches throughout.”
Raby Castle at Christmas will be available between 10am and 4pm and visitors can round o their day at Raby Castle, Park and Gardens with a festive afternoon tea at The Vinery. A candlelit experience will also take place on Saturday 13th and 20th December, where visitors can experience the elegantly decorated castle rooms in a di erent and magical light, followed by late night shopping for festive gifts at Raby’s retail space, the Coach House.
Tickets to Christmas at the Castle are £22 for adults, £7 for children (up to 15 years) and a family ticket for two adults and two children is £55. Under fours go free. These tickets include entry to Christmas at the Castle and access to the Walled Gardens and Deer Park.

“SILVER IS HITTING ITS HIGHEST PRICE SINCE 1980, MAKING THIS A GREAT TIME TO SELL”
Tim Hogarth o ers expert insight into the antiques with real value right now
One of the most frequently asked questions all antiques dealers are asked is what is the hot item in the antiques and collectibles market?
Sadly I don’t own a crystal ball, but I’m going to give you some idea purely on the items I’m looking to purchase at the moment which I can sell so I’m actively looking to purchase.
The oriental market is still strong for good ceramics both Chinese and Japanese, along with bronzes, jades, silver etc. Medals again are of great interest to me from a buyer’s viewpoint. Watches including all brands from modern to vintage watches from the 1930s to present day, top brands like Rolex Omega longines and lesser brands.
Antique jewellery is always a buzz word and continues to hold its own from delicate Edwardian pieces to cutting edge art deco items are always in demand. From semi precious stones to dazzling diamonds I’m always keen to purchase these pieces.
And I can’t end without mentioning the meteoric rise of precious metals, notably gold which is sitting at an all time high. I’m always interested in buying gold and will pay up to the minute prices in a changing and volatile market, and silver – always the poor relation to gold – is galloping ahead, hitting its highest price since 1980, making this a great time to sell either your gold or silver.
Owned by TV's favourite antiques dealer, Tim Hogarth, The Red House in York is home to 60 plus dealers, in over 100 cabinets, covering two floors. They have an impressive array of antique and vintage items to suit all budgets. For collectors they can source that elusive piece from their network of national dealers.
Three decades of serving the antiques trade in one of York’s historic buildings, The

Red House York is an 18th century former townhouse, situated in the heart of the city centre. It is a Grade II listed building which was constructed in 1700 for Sir William Robinson, Lord Mayor of York, and is reputed to be designed by William Etty.
If you have any of the items mentioned please don’t hesitate to contact Tim on timhogarth@me.com

Vivek Singh has long been a leading voice in the transformation of Indian cuisine in the UK. Born in West Bengal, he trained at the Institute of Hotel Management in Delhi before sharpening his skills with the Oberoi Group, including at the Oberoi Grand in Kolkata and Rajvilas in Jaipur.
Moving to the UK, he co-founded The Cinnamon Club in 2001, turning a former Westminster Library into a benchmark for elevated, modern Indian dining. Over time he expanded his
repertoire, launching additional eat-in concepts such as Cinnamon Bazaar and Cinnamon Kitchen, each distinguished by their ambition to blend traditional Indian flavours with contemporary technique and British seasonal produce. Vivek has also become a familiar face via appearances on Saturday Kitchen, MasterChef, and through his cookbooks, which have helped cement his influence beyond the kitchen. Now, he has taken a major step outside of London: his group has opened Cinnamon Kitchen Leeds in The Queens Hotel, marking their first northern outpost. Here he exclusively tells Absolutely why the time was right.
Q What inspired you to open a restaurant in Leeds?
A Over the years, we’ve received a lot of love from Yorkshire and Leeds, especially during the pandemic when we started doing meal kits. The support from the region was overwhelming. When the opportunity presented itself for us to open in the historic Queens Hotel in Leeds, I couldn’t say no – it was the perfect setting for another Cinnamon restaurant.
Q How does the Leeds location di er from your other Cinnamon Collection restaurants?
A Each of our locations has its own character – one is set in a library, another

in a railway arch, and another in an East India Company warehouse. The Leeds restaurant is especially distinctive because it is housed in a historic hotel with strong ties to the railways. At Cinnamon, we celebrate the culinary journeys inspired by railway travel, highlighting how food evolves across di erent regions. This connection to both the railways and local history makes the Leeds location truly unique.
Q What makes the Leeds food scene exciting to you right now?
A Leeds has access to brilliant suppliers and outstanding local produce. The food scene is vibrant and dynamic, with many passionate local farmers and producers.
There’s a real sense of excitement; everyone who wants to be part of a great food scene is in Leeds. The Indian food scene, in particular, is thriving!
Q Will we find anything di erent on the Leeds’ menu compared to elsewhere?
A Yes, the Leeds menu features several unique dishes and highlights local Yorkshire produce. For example, we use roasted Yorkshire rhubarb in spiced yoghurt as a side dish, celebrating the region’s famous rhubarb. We also o er a delicious spiced pork belly dish made with Easingwold pork, along with other items that showcase seasonal, locally sourced ingredients.
Q How do you balance innovation with tradition when designing the Leeds menu?
A We’re always striving to do something new and di erent. Progress and creativity are very important to us, so our menu is constantly evolving. We respect tradition, but also embrace innovation, ensuring our o erings are always fresh and exciting.
Q Did you face any unique challenges setting up in Leeds compared with London?
A The challenges of opening a restaurant are similar everywhere, whether in Leeds or London! However, we were fortunate to have an amazing team who did a fantastic job bringing the project together, which made the process smoother.
Q What kind of dining experience do you hope guests in Leeds will take away?
A We want guests to experience a glamorous dining room inspired by the first-class waiting rooms and dining rooms of 19th-century railways. The design is opulent and Art Deco, blending historical elegance with contemporary touches for a memorable experience.
Q What are your long-term ambitions for this restaurant?
A Each restaurant is special and unique,
and we treat each as its own project. As for further expansion, I’d say just wait and see. We’re always open to new opportunities, but every location is carefully considered.
Q How do you feel when you look back at what you have achieved in your career?
A I feel very proud. We never started with grand plans for expansion; we just wanted to do a good job and keep improving every day. Looking back, I’m very happy with how far we’ve come.
Q How has our approach to Indian cuisine evolved since you began your career?
A The approach to Indian cuisine in the UK has evolved massively, especially in fine dining. What was once seen as casual has become more refined, and there’s a greater appreciation for the diversity and depth of Indian food.

Q The Cinnamon Club has become an institution – did you ever imagine it would have that impact?
A I always hoped it would have a significant impact, so it’s very gratifying to see that it has become what it is today!
Q What has been your proudest professional moment so far?
A It’s not a single moment, but the entire journey – especially seeing the British public’s perception of Indian food change and watching my teams grow over the years. That evolution is what I’m most proud of.
Q You’ve often spoken about modernising Indian food in Britain. What does that mean to you in 2025?
A Modernising is a journey, not a destination. There’s never a point where you can say it’s done. To remain modern, we must keep evolving with the times and continuously improving.

“The Leeds menu will feature several unique dishes that highlight Yorkshire produce”
Q How do you see the future of Indian dining in the UK developing?
A Indian dining in the UK has always been loved, and I believe it will continue to thrive. In the future, both traditional, culturally rich restaurants and those that experiment and push boundaries will flourish. It’s an exciting time for the entire sector.
Q You’ve also authored several successful cookbooks – how does writing compare with running a kitchen?
A Writing is a bit like therapy for me. It’s a way to capture what I’m thinking and cooking at a particular moment in time. I’ve been fortunate to document my journey through recipes and books.
Q What advice would you give to young chefs hoping to follow a similar path?
A It’s important to fall in love with cooking and food, but also to take care of yourself so you don’t fall out of love with it. Preserve your passion and
well-being to have a long, fulfilling career. There are no prizes for burning out.
Q After such a rich career, what keeps you motivated and inspired every day?
A Well, I’m still in love with my career!

Dessert is where San Carlo truly shines. The Panettone Bread & Butter Pudding with limoncello and vanilla ice cream o ers comfort with a citrus twist. For chocolate lovers, the Ferrero Rocher Cake – layers of chocolate and hazelnut mousse wrapped in praline – is pure indulgence. Or perhaps the Tiramisu and Panna Cotta ai Frutti di Bosco, with their classic Italian flavours, are the perfect finale. Vegan desserts are also available, ensuring everyone can end their meal on a sweet note.

San Carlo has always been about more than food. It’s about experience – the kind of experience that makes an ordinary evening feel like an event. During the festive season, that magic multiplies.
The atmosphere is unmistakably Italian – vibrant, stylish, yet welcoming. It’s where you can enjoy a glass of fizz before dinner, linger over espresso after dessert, and feel part of something joyful from the moment you arrive. Service is as polished as it is personal, delivered with that signature San Carlo flair: attentive, generous, and always a little bit theatrical.
Whether it’s an intimate dinner for two, a lively lunch with friends, or a company celebration, San Carlo’s team knows how to make each occasion feel e ortless. Every detail is considered, every guest is made to feel special, and every visit feels like a celebration.
And for those who appreciate great value as much as great taste, the Christmas Fayre menu strikes a perfect balance. At £59.95 per person, it o ers refined, multi-course dining crafted from premium ingredients – an indulgent experience that still feels accessible, with something for every palate and every pocket.
What makes San Carlo unique at Christmas isn’t just the food or the festive décor – it’s the spirit. This is
a family-led collection of restaurants, founded by Chairman Carlo Distefano and led by his son, CEO Marcello Distefano. Together, they’ve built a legacy of Italian hospitality that blends authenticity with sophistication. Each restaurant reflects that ethos: a place where quality, care, and conviviality come together beautifully.
It’s that mix of energy and elegance – of polished service and heartfelt warmth – that transforms a San Carlo meal into a true celebration.
Planning your celebration couldn’t be easier. Whether it’s a table for two or a larger group booking, San Carlo’s team will tailor your experience to perfection. From festive lunches to glamorous dinners, dietary requests to décor details, everything is handled with style and ease.
So gather your family, your colleagues, your oldest friends – the ones you’ve been meaning to see all year. Dress up, raise a glass, and let San Carlo take care of the rest. Because the best memories of the season are made around a table filled with laughter, warmth, and exquisite food.

Visiting Lister Horsfall Halifax is always an eye-opening experience. Absolutely talks to Showroom Manager Karl Pickard about Rolex collections, buying habits and timeless tales
Q What kinds of Rolex models are most popular among your customers here in Halifax?
A Having been with Lister Horsfall as Showroom Manager for seven years, here in Halifax – a truly traditional Yorkshire town – our clients know exactly what they want and they’re very particular about it. That’s part of what makes working here so incredibly interesting.
In recent years, interest in ladies’ timepieces has truly flourished. The Rolex Datejust 31 has emerged as one of the most coveted collections among women, while the timeless appeal of classic gents’ professional watches continues to endure.

Q Have you noticed any recent trends in Rolex buying habits - such as preferences for certain materials, dials, or complications?
A I’ve seen trends come and go, and it’s always interesting to watch how our clients’ tastes change. Over the last few years, we’ve definitely seen a shift in what our clients are drawn to. A few years back, most of our clients in Halifax came in with a clear idea: something classic, something understated. Now, more and more of our clients are looking for a bit of personality in their watches.
Solid gold models and Rolesor designs (Rolex’s combination of Oystersteel and
18ct gold) o er that mix of everyday wearability and quiet luxury that really resonates with people. They allow owners to express personality in a subtle, understated way – something that feels special without needing to be ostentatious.
We’ve also seen the new dial colours in the Oyster Perpetual line spark a lot of excitement. It’s lovely watching clients light up when they try something a little unexpected and realise it suits them perfectly. This is the model that resonates with me the most as I am lucky to own one myself and I wear it most of the time.
Then there are the rare dials like meteorite that always draws people

in. There’s just something about knowing no two are quite the same. It makes the watch feel more personal, like it was meant for them.
So yes, trends change - but what feels
So yes, trends change - but what feels like it’s really driving them now is a blend: quality, heritage, and real exclusivity.
At Lister Horsfall, I love seeing how customers mix those together to find a Rolex that feels like it’s truly theirs.

Q How do you ensure that clients receive a premium and personalised experience when browsing the Rolex collection?
A At Lister Horsfall, we take pride in delivering first-class service to every client –

Since its creation in 1945, the Datejust has continued to reinvent itself while symbolizing Rolex’s
defi nition of classic elegance.

whether that means helping someone choose the right watch, carrying out a Rolex service in our on-site Rolex Authorised Service Centre or returning a treasured timepiece to its owner. Whatever the reason for their visit, our aim is simple: every person who walks into one of our showrooms should leave feeling they’ve had the right experience.
Being a Rolex Authorised Retailer is something we take seriously. Rolex represents precision, heritage, and excellence, and those are the same standards we set for ourselves. Clients come to us because they know they’ll get honest advice, deep product knowledge, and the reassurance that their watch is in expert hands.
We don’t overcomplicate it. Every client has their own reason for visiting, and our job is to understand that, give them the information they need, and guide them through the process with care and attention. Whether it’s a routine service or a once-in-a-lifetime purchase, we treat
it with the same level of importance. In the end, our goal is straight-forward: to make sure every client feels confident, looked after, and certain that they’ve had a Rolex experience worthy of the name.
Q Are there particular stories or milestones about Rolex that resonate most with your local clientele?
A One story that will always stay with me involves an elderly client who brought in his Rolex Submariner, originally purchased back in 1960, for a service.
He explained that he wanted to leave the watch to his grandson - not because of its value, but as something deeply personal to remember him by. They had always shared a close bond, and he wanted the watch to carry that connection forward.
The watch had been on his wrist for decades, travelling the world with him, never missing a beat. It was worn, well-loved, and in need of some expert care. He believed it was just an old watch, unlikely to be worth anything given its age and condition.
When the service was complete and the watch was ready for collection, we invited him back to the showroom. The look on his face said it all - he was absolutely amazed. It looked just like the watch he had bought all those years ago. To make the moment even more special, we had arranged a valuation, and he was stunned to discover that the watch he thought was old and worthless was actually worth many thousands of pounds.
We then arranged for his grandson to come into the showroom so his grandad could gift him the Rolex Submariner timepiece in person. To say his grandson was shocked would be an understatement - they were both over the moon.

The Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller was designed for those continually travelling the globe.

To this day, his grandson wears the watch, creating new memories with it, and one day he plans to pass it on to his own son. It’s a perfect example of what makes Rolex so special - these watches don’t just tell the time, they carry stories, and they’re loved for generations.
Q What advice would you give to someone considering their first Rolex purchase?
A Purchasing a Rolex is always a truly special occasion. As a lifelong watch aficionado, I’ve had an interest in timepieces since I was young - and Rolex has always been a huge part of that journey. Nothing gives me more satisfaction than helping someone find their perfect ‘forever’ timepiece or guiding them as they choose a meaningful gift for a loved one. It’s an emotional decision as much as it is a practical one, and that’s what makes it so special.
My advice to anyone considering their first Rolex is simple: come and see us at Lister Horsfall. Take your time, enjoy the experience, and try a few di erent pieces on your wrist - because it’s often the one you least expect that just feels right. Every member of our Rolex team shares the same passion I do, and we’re here to make the experience relaxed, enjoyable, and personal from start to finish. With many years of expertise and a genuine love for these incredible watches, we’ll guide you through every step and make sure you leave with a Rolex you’ll treasure for a lifetime.

AKT’s revolutionary, aluminiumsalts free formula transforms from a luxurious, skin-nourishing balm into a dry, invisible powder: actively protecting, deodorising, and absorbing perspiration. aktlondon.com

o pain, no gain, they say. Well they’re wrong about microblading, unless you count the two weekends a year where you might look like you’ve overdone it slightly on the brows. Because there’s certainly no physical pain – and the gains are significant. Before I took the plunge, my brows were terrible. Sparse, wonky, messy, asymmetrical. Still, I was afraid of permanently transforming them into dark, angular, fierce-looking arches – but Karen Betts is not about that at all. Her approach to treatment is to replicate a natural look, and she’ll tell you that directly. In fact, she’ll refuse to give you what she deems the wrong brows. So what is microblading? Essentially, it’s a tattoo. But microblading uses a blade-shaped tool with a row of tiny, barely visible needles to create hair-like strokes along your brows while depositing pigment into your skin. Traditional tattoos use ink, while microblading is done with safer pigment. These fade over time without changing colour. After an initial session my brows look quite intense (the awkward weekend) but tone down quickly, and a follow up appointment two months later ensures that results will last for about a year. “I’ll just book you in for this time next year then shall I?” asks Karen’s assistant. The answer’s a firm yes. I’m never going back to terrible brows.

Exploring why wool is a key trend for the home and how Yorkshire plays a big role in this
National Wool Month in October celebrated the exceptional qualities and rich heritage of British wool while supporting the farmers, local communities, and environment that sustain this vital industry.
For more than 230 years, heritage carpet company Brintons – who source much of their wool from around Yorkshire – has crafted exquisite wool-rich carpets and rugs, establishing itself as a proud champion of British Wool. Today, Brintons stands as British Wool’s largest customer worldwide, transforming wool from one in every nine British sheep into premium carpeting.
Founded 75 years ago, British Wool is an organisation founded with the aim to drive sustainable demand for British wool and champion its network of British farmers. It strives to promote British wool’s wide range of benefits that synthetic alternatives can’t o er, such as durability, sustainability, and timeless elegance.
On the unparalleled quality of wool, and the importance of wool grown and farmed in Britain, Graham Clark of British Wool emphasises: “Wool is one of the most sustainable fibres in the world and has been for centuries. As a natural resource, wool is renewable because sheep grow their fleece year after year, this needs to be shorn at least once a year for
animal welfare reasons. Unlike synthetic fibres made from fossil fuels, wool is environmentally friendly and reduces reliance on unsustainable materials.
“Farming standards in the UK are very high,” Graham adds. “We have among the strictest animal welfare standards in the world. The UK introduced the first piece of animal welfare legislation as far back as 1822 and also developed the Five Freedoms back in the ‘60s. This has since been adopted globally and forms an integral part of animal welfare legislation in the UK. All of the wool handled by British Wool is hand graded by a trained professional meaning the consistency and quality is assured.”

The multi-functional benefits of wool makes it great for a range of products – from throws and jumpers to carpets and rugs. “British wool is the bulkiest wool in the world – this is due to the breeds of sheep we have in the UK and the weather,” Graham says. “You can actually bend wool fibres 20,000 times without them breaking. All wool has this quality, but the fact British wool is the bulkiest wool in the world makes it the perfect choice for carpets.
“There are many advantages to wool flooring; the ability to spring/bounce back is structurally built into wool fibre. If you were to try and compress a handful of wool, you would find it is impossible as its natural spring will resist. This also happens on the floor – the spongy cells and the helix act like a spring and push back, and this means you get less flattened fibre and distortion meaning that a wool carpet looks better for longer.”
Lisa Conway of Brintons agrees: “Wool carpets are known for their quality because wool is naturally tough. It’s also fire-retardant meaning that wool is di cult to ignite due to high water and nitrogen content. If you hold a match to wool, it will smoulder and then go out. And this means it’s considered one of the safest fibres for flooring and fabrics – the perfect choice for the family home.”

With the right care and maintenance, wool flooring is designed to last, and thanks to its natural qualities, it is easy to maintain. “Due to the nature of the wool fibre, it will generally hide soiling better than synthetic products and also is easy to clean,” Lisa explains. “This essentially gives you time to blot up a spill before it soaks into the carpet but unfortunately, often we panic, grab the first detergent we can find and scrub the living daylights out of the spot! This causes pile distortion and can damage the carpet. Instead use a blotting/dabbing action or, even better, a wet suction vacuum cleaner if available. It’s important that you do not rub as this will cause the pile to burst, making it appear slightly flu y and lighter in appearance.” Graham adds: “It is crucial that wool is cleaned in the correct manner and companies like WoolSafe o er excellent tips on cleaning wool carpets. The big advantage of a wool carpet is the fact that it maintains its appearance better than any other carpet and if looked after properly, the carpet will look as good in 10 years’ time as it does when first installed.”
THE IMPORTANCE OF WOOL MONTH
Wool Month is a highlight in the calendar for both British Wool and Brintons, along with many other brands who support British
Wool and work together to drive demand for British wool. “Initiatives like Wool Month are crucial to increasing consumer awareness about wool and communicating all of its amazing features and how it can be part of the solution to addressing global warming and climate change,” Graham says.
“At Brintons, we’re incredibly proud to be the largest user of British Wool,” Lisa states. “We really believe in the quality of British Wool and feel it’s what really allows us to manufacture our carpets and rugs to such a high calibre.”
Launched in 2025, Brintons’ innovative Alpine carpet collection – an expansion of the Purely Natural line – showcases five distinct textural designs in three versatile colourways, crafted to elevate contemporary living spaces. Setting a new industry benchmark, the Alpine Collection combines luxury with environmental stewardship. Each carpet is meticulously woven using 100% undyed British wool and features a premium backing of cotton, jute, and natural rubber latex. This revolutionary composition makes the Alpine Collection fully biodegradable and plastic-free.

Barker and Stonehouse, who have a showroom in Leeds, have launched new collections that have been thoughtfully curated by its in-house team to capture the season’s essence, from rustic textures and warm tones to timeless silhouettes that bring natural joy to your space
RUSTIC MODERN
Step into the world of Rustic Modern, a trend that grounds contemporary living in character and texture.
“It’s luxury in its most relaxed form, where rich woods, neutral fabrics, and sculptural armchairs speak softly but with purpose,” says Magdalena Gierasinska, Head of Product & Displays at Barker and Stonehouse. “Rustic Modern invites a seamless blend of natural elements and modern design, creating spaces
that feel both timeless and e ortlessly inviting. Every detail is thoughtfully chosen to balance comfort with elegance.
“Rustic Modern is about creating harmony between natural character and contemporary ease,” she continues. “By combining wooden furniture with a classic checked rug and a relaxed linen sofa, you achieve a look that feels both modern and timeless.
Organic-shaped sculptural accessories bring a sense of flow and artistry, while a curated display of rustic ceramics in mixed

shapes and colourways adds depth and individuality. It’s a style that feels e ortless, yet every detail is thoughtfully chosen.”
Embrace the season’s palette with warm contemporary, where sleek modern lines meet cosy textures and rich tones. “Dark woods, fluted accents, and deep chocolate browns create a sophisticated yet inviting atmosphere, blending comfort and style with e ortless ease,” explains Magdalena. “Contemporary design comes alive when you layer in thoughtful contrasts and accents. Gold, brass, and metallic touches instantly elevate the look, while a mix of striking silhouettes, such as a sculptural armchair, a domed table lamp, or a wiggle-framed mirror creates a bold, modern statement. To ground the space, balance these sleek elements with rich, cosy neutral tones, ensuring the result feels both harmonious and inviting.”
This autumn/winter, reimagine classic furniture with playful patterns and prints. “Harness the energising power of colour and reimagine the home as a canvas for confidence and self-expression,” says Magdalena. “Take an eclectic approach to decorating and create a richly layered and deeply personal space.
“A gallery wall is a perfect way to add personality and depth to your home, the trick is to curate a mix of prints and artworks in di erent shapes and sizes, so the result feels cohesive but never contrived. To anchor the look, ground the space with a colour palette inspired by the natural world, creating a calm, balanced backdrop for your chosen pieces,” Magdalena finishes.

From rustic terracotta tones to soft sage greens, texture and colour can transform your home into a warm, inviting retreat. When the light softens and we spend more time indoors, it’s natural to want spaces that feel warm, welcoming, and full of personality. One of the easiest ways to achieve that? With the right tiles.
Rich, grounded colours are setting the tone this season. Terracotta, with its sunbaked, rustic charm, is enjoying a stylish resurgence, reconnecting our interiors with the beauty of natural materials. Warm neutrals like hickory, taupe, and stone grey pair beautifully with softer hues such as sage green or cashmere for a calm yet sophisticated palette. These earthy tones create depth and balance, adding instant warmth to bathrooms and kitchens alike. You
can embrace them through statement floors, feature walls, or simple accent details. They work beautifully with wood, brass, and organic textures, blending comfort with contemporary style.
Checkerboard tiles are back – and more stylish than ever. They bring a sense of order and playfulness to a space, whether you go for classic black and white or try modern, muted shades for a softer look. Matt finishes give a fresh, grounded aesthetic, while polished designs nod to traditional elegance.
Geometric tile work continues to inspire homeowners and designers who love pattern and precision. Think hexagons, chevrons, bricks, and parquet-inspired layouts. These designs let you be creative while keeping things cohesive.
Texture is another major design story. Tiles with fluted, wavy, or relief finishes
add tactile interest, while stone-e ect and handcrafted styles bring a lived-in, authentic quality. Textured tiles catch the light beautifully, adding subtle movement and depth that plain walls can’t replicate.
Green continues to be a favourite for bathrooms and kitchens. Mint green tiles bring brightness and energy, while glossy emerald or olive tones add a dramatic, luxurious touch. Pair green with crisp white and natural wood details.
With six showrooms across the country, The Tile Company makes it easy to explore the latest tile trends in person. From inspiring displays to expert advice and a free design service, their friendly team can help you create a space that feels as warm and inviting as it looks.

Just in time for Christmas (and beyond)... Start 2026 in style with a kitchen that’s ready for every season
As the festive season approaches, many of us begin to reassess how our homes work for gatherings, daily routines and family life – and the kitchen, often the busiest room in the house, is usually front and centre.
If you’re considering an upgrade, November can be a great time to get started. At Kitchen Warehouse, we regularly work with customers who want their new kitchen in place ahead of Christmas – and in many cases, it’s still possible. With a fully project-managed service that covers everything from electrics and plastering to plumbing and fitting, a complete kitchen transformation can be delivered in as little as three weeks.
With lead times on doors as short as five working days and a wide range of styles in stock, we can help you move quickly – without compromising on quality or style. And for those who don’t want the stress of coordinating multiple trades in the lead-up to Christmas, we handle the whole process, so everything runs smoothly during what is already a busy time of year.
There’s also the option to take a more hands-on approach. With our simple click-and-deliver service, you can order everything you need for a DIY flatpack kitchen straight from our website – a pre-Christmas parcel to unwrap and build under your own steam. Pricing is clear, VAT is included, and because we sell directly (no middlemen), you’ll benefit from true warehouse savings. That’s more money left in your pocket for Christmas dinner – or a few extra treats under the tree.
Of course, this isn’t just about Christmas. January is often the time when people plan bigger home improvements – but it’s also a

period when trades are in high demand, and timelines start to stretch. By getting ahead now, you could start the new year with your kitchen already finished and fully functional. As a family-run business, Kitchen Warehouse prides itself on o ering friendly advice and exceptional customer service. “We still can’t believe how quickly it came together. The whole process was smooth, and the end result is stunning. We hosted Christmas last year in our new kitchen and everyone complimented it,” says Mrs Gilling from Harrogate.

Focus Fireplaces & Stoves in York share how HWAM and WIKING are redefining wood-burning with smart technology
There’s nothing quite like the comfort of a real fire – the flicker of the flames, the gentle warmth, the way it instantly makes a home feel inviting. But in a world where energy costs are rising and e ciency matters more than ever, today’s homeowners are looking for heating that’s not just beautiful, but brilliantly smart.
That’s where HWAM and WIKING come in – two Scandinavian stove brands designed to deliver maximum heat, minimal e ort, and genuine fuel savings.
According to Mike, Director at Focus Fireplaces & Stoves in York, the secret lies in their intelligent technology. “HWAM’s Autopilot™ system automatically adjusts the stove’s air supply as the fire burns,” Mike explains. “It means your stove always runs at peak e ciency, using up to 40% less firewood while producing the same comforting warmth.”
For homeowners who love innovation, HWAM also o ers SmartControl™. By connecting to an app on your smartphone, you can simply set your preferred room temperature – and the stove does the rest. It automatically adjusts oxygen flow and vents to maintain a perfect balance of comfort and economy. “You light the fire, relax, and let the technology take care of everything,” says Mike.
WIKING stoves share the same philosophy of smart, sustainable heat. Their Automatic Air Control technology regulates airflow from the moment you light the fire, guaranteeing a clean, e cient burn every time.
“The clever thing about both HWAM and WIKING,” Mike adds, “is that they do all the thinking for you. There’s no guesswork – just beautiful, e cient heating that saves money and reduces your environmental impact.”

STYLE MEETS SUBSTANCE
Beyond the technology, HWAM and WIKING stoves are a design statement. Their sleek Scandinavian styling complements both modern and traditional interiors, making them as beautiful as they are practical.
YOUR LOCAL HEATING EXPERTS
With over 35 years in the industry and more than 30,000 installations across Yorkshire, Focus Fireplaces & Stoves in York has built an unmatched reputation for quality, service, and expert advice. “We’re passionate about helping customers find the perfect stove for their home,” says Mike. “Our two showrooms o er a wide range of displays, and our own Gas Safe and HETAS registered teams handle installation from start to finish. We make it easy, safe, and stress-free.”

Queen Ethelburga’s explain the areas to consider when thinking about and choosing your child’s options for Sixth Form

Today’s fast-evolving world of employment and further education requires an equally innovative approach to be taken in schools. At Queen Ethelburga’s, we are at the forefront of providing a highly personalised and dynamic wellbeing and curriculum o ering, through our model of three schools on one campus. Our prep and middle schools lead to an almost unlimited number of pathways through our senior school. From September 2025 QE has begun the process of combining the ISA Independent School of the Year (previously known as QE Faculty) and The Times leading school for academic results in the North (QE College), into one exceptional Year 10 to 13 senior school, providing an unprecedented range of academic, vocational, sport, performance, creative and co-curricular opportunities, to be named Queen Ethelburga’s College. Here are our top tips for consideration when choosing where you will study for your A-levels:
Education doesn’t need to be a one size fits all. Depending on the strengths and interests of your child, you should consider whether a traditional academic route or a modern BTEC or mixed route would suit them best. At QE, we o er a number of flexible pathways and options. Students can take an A-level route made up of traditional academic subjects, or there is also the opportunity to create a bespoke curriculum that can mix traditional A-levels with modern A-levels and BTECs, and can also facilitate extra time within the curriculum for performance sports and performing arts.
WHAT CAREERS GUIDANCE IS OFFERED?
A strong careers department is vital for all students. It guides them down the correct

path in terms of what subject options to take, what extra-curriculars to do to widen their knowledge and improve their applications, and most importantly, what career options are available to them that use the skills and subjects that are most suited to them.
Schools with a high-quality careers department like QE will provide each student with as much support as is needed across areas such as career and subject choices, applications, student recommendations, interviews, work experience, entrance exams and auditions. They will also work across departments to open up other opportunities including sport scholarships to American Universities or Law or Accountancy Undergraduate placements.
WHAT SUPPORT DOES THE SIXTH FORM OFFER?
Sixth form colleges can vary massively in class sizes. At QE, classes are limited to 15 students, but are often much smaller so that one-on-one teacher time is readily available. Both schools o er a vast amount of support including our Whole School Revision Project where each and every student is taught a variety of essential study skills and can find the most e ective revision method for them. Many students have transformed from low level grades to top grades using our study methods and training.
WHAT EXTRA-CURRICULAR LEARNING EXPERIENCES ARE ON OFFER?
Universities and companies are increasingly looking for a wide range of interests from
students. It is important that you help guide your child to a school that o ers a wide range of extra-curricular options, including those that they are most passionate about.
At QE, we are incredibly proud of the vast array of opportunities o ered to our students. We have over 100 clubs and activities onsite including our own Combined Cadet Force, Student Motorsport Team and Esports Team. We o er regular trips throughout the UK and overseas and have a Stretch and Challenge programme to push students academically through national competitions, lectures by professionals and certification courses in areas such as Lifeguarding, Gym Instructing and Mental Health.
PRIORITISE HAPPINESS
ABOVE EVERYTHING ELSE
Above all, you need to prioritise the happiness of your child. The sixth form you choose is where they will be for not just the next two years of their life, but the two most important years of their academic life. Take time to look at the ethos of the school to make sure it matches who your child is and the kind of environment where they will flourish.
Sixth form can be a challenging time for students so look out for schools like QE who o er fantastic student wellbeing support in a dedicated pastoral space.
For more information about QE’s highachieving and well-rounded sixth form, visit qe.org, attend an open morning on 24th January 2026, or alternatively you can email admissions@qe.org to book a private tour

Good Schools Guide 2025

At The Mount Senior School we equip girls for life, not just exams (although we have a proud record of academic excellence). Two alumnae who demonstrate our core Mount values are Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell and Dame Judi Dench OBE, household names in Science and the Performing Arts, whose photos grace our corridors to inspire current Mount girls. Dame of the Realm Professor Jocelyn Bell is a world-leading Physicist renowned for discovering pulsars in 1967 while she was still a postgraduate! She attended The Mount from 1956–61. Awarded a BSc in 1965 from the University of Glasgow, Jocelyn earned her PhD at Cambridge in 1969.
Dame Jocelyn received the Royal Astronomical Society’s Gold (Copley) Medal in 2021 (first awarded in 1824 and whose previous recipients include Einstein, Hubble and Hawking). In an interview with a Mount pupil, Jocelyn pointed out the gender inequalities in Science:
PORTRAIT OF DAME JOCELYN CREATED COLLABORATIVELY BY PUPILS

The Mount School York girls can’t wait to follow in the footsteps of famous alumnae struck
“They’ve been awarding that medal for 200 years. I am the fifth woman, in all that time, to get it.”
Dame Jocelyn inspires our current pupils, many of whom are excelling in STEM subjects, to aim high and demand the recognition they deserve.
Another formidable and beloved former pupil is Dame Judi Dench OBE, who told us she couldn’t resist visiting her boarding school while she was in town last year.
Dame Judi was in York after a sell-out show.
“The blessed Mount,” she said on stage, and when asked about going to school added: “I wouldn’t have changed it for anything.” At her show, Dame Judi said she wanted to come to The Mount because she loved the uniform – blue shirts and white collars –and thought, theatrically, ‘what a costume!’
The audience also loved the tale of how The Mount’s ‘Wet Walks’ (walking in the rain) were not to Dame Judi’s taste, so she called her parents from a local telephone box to collect her and her friend who soon enjoyed a cup of tea in the warmth of her house. When they were due back to school, her parents sprinkled water on them before
being dropping them near school to get away with their clever plan. On her recent visit, Dame Judi reminisced with pupils about her time on stage at The Mount.
The Mount community celebrated the news that Dame Jocelyn was appointed Companion of Honour only this year, one of the highest distinctions that can be bestowed. The Order was founded “to recognise outstanding achievements in the Arts, Sciences, Medicine and Public Service”, with membership limited to 65. It is with special pride that two Mounties now hold this rare honour as Dame Jocelyn joins Dame Judi in this illustrious company!
The motto of the Order, “In action faithful and in honour clear”, beautifully echoes our own school’s guiding motto “Qui Fidelis est in Parvo”, “those who are faithful in small things”. Both these remarkable Mount Old Scholars continue to inspire the next generations of Mounties.

Exploring how Huddersfield Grammar School help their pupils to develop, focusing on a particularly inspiring
At Huddersfield Grammar School, every pupil is encouraged to pursue excellence with curiosity, kindness, and resilience. These values extend far beyond the classroom, shaping young people who go on to make a meaningful di erence in the world. Their alumni reflect the school’s commitment to developing ambitious, compassionate individuals ready to lead with confidence and integrity. One such pupil is Olivia

Warren, whose journey captures the very essence of the HGS spirit.
Having joined the senior school in Year 7, Olivia has embraced every opportunity to grow both academically and personally. From her very first year, she demonstrated determination and a genuine enthusiasm for learning. Supported by inspiring teachers and a nurturing school community, she has developed into a confident, compassionate, and ambitious young leader.
Olivia achieved an exceptional set of GCSE results, securing a string of Grade 8s and 9s (A*-A**) across her subjects. Now studying A-levels in Business, Geography, Psychology and Foundation Mathematics, she continues to approach her studies with focus and curiosity.
A natural leader, Olivia served as Head Girl, a role she undertook with integrity, enthusiasm, and empathy. “Becoming Head Student was one of my proudest achievements,” she reflects, “because it enabled me to give back to a school that has given me so much.” Whether speaking at school events, supporting younger pupils or representing HGS in the wider community, she has been a role model who leads by example. Her leadership is rooted in kindness and collaboration, qualities that make her an admired and respected figure among both sta and fellow students.

Beyond the classroom, Olivia threw herself into the wealth of experiences that HGS has to o er – from unforgettable trips to Malaysia, Wales, London, Cornwall, and skiing adventures abroad, to representing the school in netball, a sport she loved thanks to the encouragement of her netball teacher. “The incredible experiences and opportunities at HGS have given me memories I’ll treasure for life,” she says.
“They’ve also helped me develop skills that will stand me in great stead for the future.”
Olivia fondly remembers her Geography teachers lessons, which sparked her passion for the subject, and credits her maths teacher for making even the most challenging maths lessons enjoyable.
“Everyone at HGS wants you to succeed,” she adds. “The teachers will do anything needed to help you get there.”
As she looks ahead to university and a future that combines her interests in business and geography, Olivia says she will miss the “close-knit, family-like atmosphere” of HGS most. Her story captures exactly what Huddersfield Grammar School strives to achieve – nurturing confident, curious, and compassionate young people whose legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.

why everyone is talking about…
The streets of York will be transformed into “An Enchanted City” on 7th and 8th February 2026, where a spell has been cast. Ice sculptures, alive with enchantment, appear across the cobbled and narrow streets of the city. Sculptures will be inspired by magic, mystery, and the weird and wonderful – creating an extraordinary trail. But who cast the spell? And why? The whole family can follow the trail to uncover the truth, before the ice melts and takes everything with it.
The ice sculptures, curated by Make It York and partners, are created by Icebox, the UK and Europe’s leading ice sculpture specialist, and will be on display at various iconic locations throughout the city. Pick up a trail map from the Visit York Visitor Information Centre to tick o all the sculptures and, upon completion, collect a special sticker.
New for 2026, Make It York is launching the ‘Ice Village’, a carefully curated market under the umbrella theme ‘enchanted’, which will inspire a magical mix of familyfriendly activities and themed traders.
Sarah Loftus, Managing Director of Make It York, says: “We’re always excited to bring back the York Ice Trail, which is a highlight of our calendar. It’s a fantastic event that brings residents and visitors together to experience the city, and this year’s enchanted theme won’t disappoint.”
Each ice sculpture is sponsored by a local business, whose support makes the event possible. The previous York Ice Trail event in February 2025 was a huge success, which saw 30 ice sculptures with the theme of “Origins”. Appealing to both residents and visitors to the city, footfall counts reached over 85,000 visitors during the weekend.
