LETTER Editor’s

There is no escaping how important Star Wars has been to my life. The original, A New Hope (although I was always confused back then why it was subtitled Episode IV. That became clear much later on) was one of the first films I saw in the cinema and from that day I was hooked. For many Christmases, my main presents were Star Wars toys, and as I got older it was collector's edition DVDs of the films.

1

ABSOLUTELY’S December issue highlights 2

Even today, whenever there's an announcement of a new spin off – or even a new film based on the original folklore itself – it piques my interest. Not all have been good, but one certainly was: Andor. It launched on Disney+ to not a lot of fanfare, but recently ended as one of the most hyped shows about.

5

The action essentially builds up to the events of the film in Rogue One – another huge hit – which in turn leads to the starting point of A New Hope. The Empire's Death Star is always in the background of it all, and this is where our lead profile, Robert Emms, comes in. He plays a crucial part in setting up the whole Star Wars storyline, so speaking to him was like Christmas coming early for me.

Whatever makes you happy, I hope you have plenty of it going around this festive season. Have a very Merry Christmas!

The career of Robert Emms continues to go from strength to strength. He talks to Absolutely about Steven Spielberg, Andor and two very di erent new roles

LOOK TO THE STARS

Spoiler alert. Although for anyone with a passing interest in Star Wars, it’s not really a spoiler, but the character Robert Emms plays in Andor, Supervisor Lonni Jung, is the first to reveal that the Empire is, in fact, building a weapon that will ultimately become the iconic Death Star in the first of the Star Wars saga, A New Hope. “He ends up being an incredibly significant character in the whole canon of Star Wars,” Robert smiles about Lonni. “I remember once leaving my house, walking down the street and a guy grabbing my arm, welling up and saying thank you to me for what my character sacrifices in the story.”

It’s a little surprising this hasn’t happened more often given a CV that includes some key performances in major films and TV shows. Robert first burst on the scene as Albert Narracott, the lead in the West End stage show of War Horse, put in a compelling performance in the hugely popular Happy Valley, and was central to the unfolding horror of TV behemoth Chernobyl. And now he has not one, but two much-hyped films out that really do show his range as an actor.

Bad Apples, starring Sairose Ronan, focuses on a teacher finding her class of ten-year-olds disrupted by one unruly pupil, whose father is played by Robert. “The key attraction initially before I even read the script was working alongside Saoirse,” he says on the film. “I have been a huge admirer of her work, she is super talented and clearly earned her stripes, so that was exciting. Then I read the script and spoke to the director [Jonatan Etzler]. I found the story quite exciting, it

felt like it was doing something new and pushing the boundaries of storytelling in quite a realistic environment. The story takes an unexpected turn – it felt like there were a lot of unexpected turns –which made it quite exciting to read.

“My character I found interesting because his kid is the troublesome one in the class, he is just causing so much havoc and all the other parents see him as a huge risk to their children’s mental health and safety. So being the father of that child was an interesting challenge to work out. What’s going on at home, what’s

his relationship with his dad like? In this case I decided with the other actors and director that maybe his home life wasn’t so structured, and his father was quite weak and not really there, not setting many boundaries, and working a lot and trying to hold down a job as a single parent, so he wasn’t really having a connection with his boy. It was an appealing character to me.”

It’s certainly generated a lot of discussion. “It’s quite a provocative film,” Robert nods, “so I think it will strike up conversations between parents of kids for sure. It raises an interesting question

WITH THE STARRY CAST (AND DIRECTOR) OF WAR HORSE

about how you might deal with children who have additional needs, and how teachers manage those kids, and how other kids manage those kids. It shines an interesting light on that story.”

Robert’s other film out, The Choral, couldn’t be any more di erent. Starring Ralph Fiennes, it is a warm, characterdriven drama centred on a struggling community choir seeking purpose and connection through music, set at the time of WWI. “I was really excited about working with Nicholas Hytner, the director, and also being in an Alan Bennett piece,” Robert says of the attraction. “I have seen all of Nick’s plays at The National Theatre during his time there, so I was a huge admirer of his work. To work with him on an Alan Bennett piece in such a great part that I particularly relate to and felt quite moved by was a great privilege.

“Working with Ralph was great,” he adds. “Actually, the whole cast – I absolutely loved sitting at the read through, I was sat in the middle of this long table and Ralph was opposite me, in front was all these other established actors, to my left I am sat next to Ron Cook who is an actor I have admired in the theatre and film, and all these new amazing young actors who

are coming out into the industry now. It was so exciting. It was an amazing read through, everyone was in tears by the end of it. And Ralph – he’s great to work with. He is very disciplined, he works very hard with a high level of focus all the time.”

Our interviewee plays the pianist Robert Hornet, a close friend of Fiennes’ Dr Guthrie, delivering one of the film’s most moving character arcs and a world away from his role in Bad Apples. “Josh in Bad Apples is a struggling single father who is not able to have a relationship with his son, who has completely lost sight of him, a weak human being in a way. Robert in The Choral is an incredible person who holds his beliefs very strongly against the war, and is a strong willed person, and someone who is a brave person who stands up for what he believes in. He is a conscientious objector in the film, a gay man living supposedly as open as he can in that world. I found him as a character quite admirable really.”

It’s also a part that harks back to Robert’s entrance into the world of acting, growing up in Horley on the Sussex border. “I have played the piano ever since I was seven-years-old,” he explains. “I actually was initially going to

“One guy grabbed me in the street, welled up and said thank you for what my character sacrificed in Andor”
AS LONNI JUNG IN ANDOR

go to music college, and then right at the last minute I changed my mind. I found music quite a lonely thing to do! Making theatre and being an actor was a more communal process and that’s what I love.”

An early breakthrough career-wise was the much acclaimed War Horse stage adaptation. “I initially saw the play when it was first on at the National Theatre,” Robert says. “I was walking along the South Bank and I bumped into the assistant director at the time, and they said come and sit in the director’s box with them. I saw the show and was blown away, it was exactly the kind of theatre I wanted to do, a big show and physical piece, a hugely moving story. So I wrote a letter to the casting director a week later saying if this goes into the West End I would love to be seen for it. And to my surprise he got me in for an audition, so I went in for that, must have done four auditions and then didn’t get the role [of Albert Narracott], I got down to the last two. I didn’t speak to them for a couple of months and then they phoned me and said did I want to go and understudy the actor who was doing it at the time, who was Kit Harrington. I understudied Kit for

six months, played another part in it, and then literally two weeks later I was doing that lead part. Then Steven Spielberg saw the show and came on to the stage after and wanted to chat to us. As I was walking o the stage he tapped me on the shoulder and said ‘I would love to talk to you’, took me aside and basically in that moment o ered me the part that I then played in the film [version of War Horse]. That whole thing changed my career, it completely set me up in TV and film.”

I mention how amazing that is – Steven Spielberg! – but it’s a little snapshot into how fascinating Robert’s career has been. “I have always been very fortunate to find myself in projects that are attracting quite exciting writers, actors, directors, studios, TV production companies… it always feels very exciting,” he says. “I always try to find a character or try to play characters that have an interesting thread to their story, or some kind of interesting through line. They might not be the lead character, but they are a character that has an interesting depth to them. That’s important to me.”

Which brings us back to Lonni Jung. “The amazing thing about Andor was

that it was really politically engaged. It explicitally says the word genocide in the piece. That word right now is so politically charged. That’s what I loved about it, it wasn’t afraid, and whilst it was in this sci-fi world and this Star Wars context, it didn’t shy away from just stretching that framework and pushing the boundaries.

“Playing someone that was instrumental and highly active as a character in that story was exciting. And the fans are brilliant! I have attended some events where I have met some fans through it, that is what you do it for, those people really get it. When you meet Star Wars fans you realise that kind of approval is as if you have done a performance of a Shakespeare play, and a Shakespearean expert comes up to you and gives you a handshake,” he laughs.

He is o to Barcelona for Christmas for a break, before returning to family in Horley for Boxing Day – and then the future looks very bright for Robert Emms. We certainly hope he keeps on spoiling us.

Bad Apples and The Choral are both out now. Follow Robert @robertemms

His Majesty The King, Patron of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, joined podcast series host, Cate Blanchett, Kew’s Ambassador for Wakehurst, and Kew seed scientist, Dr Elinor Breman, for a special podcast episode launching Kew’s fourth Unearthed series on 20th October.

Unearthed: The need for seeds marked 25 years of Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank (MSB), the most significant wild seed bank in the world, and home to some of the planet’s most precious biodiversity. Many of the tiny seeds held there hold solutions to climate change and habitat loss that are vital for the future of our planet.

In The King’s second ever podcast recording, the trio discussed the MSB and its origins, some of the most exciting achievements in the past 25 years as well as ongoing work around the world

SOWING THE SEEDS

A very special podcast was recorded recently that reflected on the work taking place at Kew, Wakehurst

today, including in Australia and South Africa. Elinor brought plants, seeds and conservation test kits to show The King and they spoke about the future potential for the project to have even greater impact. Together they reminisced about the origins of seed science, and The King demonstrated his knowledge of the science and practice of conservation techniques.

King Charles opened the Millennium Seed Bank, located at Kew’s wild botanic garden in Wakehurst, Sussex, in 2000 and has taken an active interest in its progress since, returning to visit in 2019. He has a deep connection to the natural world and has spent decades dedicated to conservation and philanthropic work.

Soundbites from the episode include King Charles III saying: “I think it’s wonderful what the seed bank is doing, but we’ve got to speed up the process. I’m very proud to be a patron of Kew. That’s the great thing. It does wonderful work.”

Cate Blanchett added: “There is an

urgency to the work that the seed bank does here in this country. I was shocked to learn that 97% of the wildflower meadows have been decimated. I don’t think it’s something that we quite understand here because we look around us and in the immediate term, we see so much natural beauty, but we don’t think about how fragile it is.”

Recorded by Fresh Air Production for RBG Kew, the special episode released on 20th October will be followed by a new three-part series looking at the past, present and future of the Millennium Seed Bank. The series takes listeners on a unique journey with Cate as she follows Kew scientists and their partners pushing the boundaries of seed biology research, joins seed collectors in the field, helps to bank seeds, speaks to MSB experts and global partners and learns how seeds are being sent to space.

Maré - meaning tide in Portugueseis the new venture from celebrated chef Rafael Cagali in Hove. Absolutely talks to him about origins, local produce and having Christmas o

Q What drew you to open your next venture in Hove?

A The city has such great energy, and we’ve found the locals to be curious and open to trying something di erent. There’s also a strong community of independent hospitality businesses, which is really exciting to see. And, of course, Sussex’s local produce is outstanding – from fantastic seafood thanks to the coastal location, to beautiful vegetables like asparagus, heritage tomatoes, and mushrooms. The region’s sparkling wines are also exceptional.

Q How did your collaboration with your protégé, Ewan Waller, influence the development of Maré’s menu?

A Ewan worked with me for three years at Da Terra, so when he moved to Brighton and the opportunity to launch Maré presented itself, it felt like everything was falling into place. When it came to the menu, I created the structure and added some dishes we knew we wanted to serve from the outset, and Ewan input some of his ideas too – before we began the testing process to make sure everything worked together.

Q Can you talk about some of the Sussex and British suppliers you’re most excited to showcase at Maré?

A We’re proud to be serving local vineyard Rathfinny’s Classic Cuvée by the glass, as

well as wines from Everflyht and Hundred Hills. I’m also really enjoying Pevensey blue cheese, on the menu at the moment, which we source from The Cheese Man.

Q Many of your dishes reflect your Brazilian-Italian heritage –how does that background shine through in Maré’s menu?

A My approach to cooking hasn’t just been shaped by my heritage, it’s also been influenced by working in other countries such as Spain and Italy, and living in the UK for such a long time. Working with di erent cultures has shaped my cooking style the most. Our pumpkin ravioli is a key example of how my heritage has influenced my cooking – using classic Italian ingredients and techniques, combined with fresh ingredients like Cunari chillies that are often found in Brazilian cuisine.

Q Which of the dishes on the menu best represents the spirit of Maré, and why?

A Our lobster rice is quickly becoming a favourite dish for our customers. We use Japanese rice, cooked in a light bisque stock made from lobster heads, add in pickled ox tongue and finish with a mayonnaise made with Dende oil. The lobster is cooked on the BBQ and brushed with an oil made from the lobster shells. It’s a great example of how we use local produce in an innovative way. I also think the beef (Freedom Hills Picanha, served with chimichurri) is a great

FRIED OYSTERS
RAFAEL CAGALI

representation of our ethos, and goes really well with the lobster rice – almost like a surf and turf, which is how I envisaged eating the two when developing the menu.

Q Do you personally have a favourite dish right now?

A At the moment, it’s our aged hamachi crudo that we serve with an ajo blanco.

Q What was your vision for the wine list, and how did you work with producers to ensure it complements the food?

A The list is curated by Maria Boumpa (of Da Terra) to echo our menu – playful, layered and international with a nod to English producers and the coastal terroir. She has a great relationship with our suppliers and we’re proud to showcase Hundred Hills Rosé de Saignée, Danbury Ridge Chardonnay and Rathfinny Classic Cuvée, which we serve by the glass. We’ve also included fortified wines such as Barbadillo En Rama, sherries and rare picks like Château Margaux by the glass, and Seña from Chile.

Q Your partner Charlie Lee focuses on a warm, relaxed front-of-house style. How important was it for

you to combine precision in the kitchen with ease in service?

A Extremely important – it takes both of these things to make a fantastic restaurant experience, so they should be weighted equally.

Q Do you have any festive plans for Maré?

A For Christmas get-togethers, we’ve just launched a great set lunch menu for £55pp, which gives a great overview of some of our favourite dishes, from snacks through to sharers and dessert. We’ll also have two special menus for bigger groups looking for tables of eight or ten – perfect for celebrating.

Q Will you have any time o over Christmas?

A We usually take time o from 20th December, and plans really depend on where we are – either in the UK with Charlie’s family or Brazil with mine. In the UK, Christmas is lunch at Charlie’s mother’s home where I ‘take the day o cooking’ – handling the turkey while Charlie does the rest, including the best Yorkshire puddings!

Tilsmore

Time to sparkle…

Hidden among rolling hills near Mayfield, Tilsmore feels like the kind of place where time slows down –all woodland walks, open skies, and the quiet rhythm of rural Sussex life. Planted in 2017, this family-run estate is cradled by ancient forest and shaped by the distinctive Wealden landscape, with its gentle slopes and cool climate lending elegance to the wines.

Tilsmore champions small-scale, sustainable winemaking, producing no more than a couple of thousand bottles per vintage. Each release –from the elegant, citrus-driven Brut to the intricate, red-berry Rosé – is made by the traditional method and aged patiently on its lees to develop depth and finesse.

Designed as thoughtfully as it’s made, every bottle is finished with bespoke artwork inspired by local folklore, reflecting the spirit of the estate and conveying a refined sense of luxury. That level of care – along with the wines’ graceful, expressive character – makes Tilsmore a perfect choice for the festive table.

STRONGER SMARTER SIMPLER

The benefits of working out at home with hand weights and bands

In the age of convenience, more people are ditching crowded gyms for home-based workouts – and for good reason. You don’t need bulky machines or expensive memberships to build strength, improve flexibility, and boost your overall health. With just a set of hand weights and resistance bands, your living room can become your own personal fitness studio.

1. MAXIMUM RESULTS, MINIMAL EQUIPMENT

Hand weights and resistance bands may be small, but their impact is anything but. Dumbbells allow for targeted muscle engagement, whether you’re performing

equipment, and juggling your schedule can sabotage the best intentions. But working out at home removes all those barriers. In just 20-30 minutes a day, you can get a full-body workout with minimal setup and zero travel. Hand weights and bands also encourage consistency. Their portability means you can keep them visible – in a basket by the couch or under your desk – so it’s easier to squeeze in a quick set during a break or between meetings. And consistency is the real secret to fitness success.

3.

LOW IMPACT, HIGH REWARD

Resistance bands are especially popular for people recovering from injuries or looking for a lower-impact option. They provide controlled resistance that’s easier on the joints while still strengthening muscles. Similarly, hand weights o er a manageable step up from bodyweight exercises without overloading the body. These tools also promote better form and balance. Unlike machines that guide your motion, free weights and bands force your body to stabilize itself. That means you’re not just working individual muscles –you’re also strengthening your core and improving coordination with every move.

4. COST-EFFECTIVE AND SPACE-SAVING

bicep curls, shoulder presses, or squats. Meanwhile, resistance bands – lightweight and incredibly versatile – can add challenge to virtually any exercise, promoting muscle activation and control.

These tools let you modify intensity on the fly. Want a heavier workout? Grab a thicker band or increase your dumbbell weight. Prefer a lighter session? Adjust accordingly. This flexibility means your workout evolves with you, whether you’re a beginner or already in great shape.

2. SAVE TIME, STAY CONSISTENT

One of the biggest hurdles to fitness is time. Commuting to the gym, waiting for

You don’t need a dedicated home gym to get in shape. A couple of hand weights and a few resistance bands can cost less than a single month’s gym membership. They take up hardly any space and can be stored in a drawer, closet, or under the bed when not in use. Plus, there are countless free workout videos and apps tailored to weights and bands, so you’ll never run out of routines to try. Whether you’re following a 10-minute core session or a full 45-minute strength circuit, you can progress without spending a dime more.

Fitness doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. With a pair of hand weights and a set of resistance bands, you can build a consistent, e ective, and sustainable workout habit from the comfort of your home. It’s not just about convenience – it’s about taking control of your health on your terms.

Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the festive mood

That’s

entertainment

The founder of Industville writes about how to create warm, inviting spaces for all comers this festive season

As we approach the festive season, attention turns to designing spaces that act as the perfect backdrop for convivial celebrations. In these zones, sculpture, materiality and storytelling collide, with each element carefully curated to work together in harmony and evoke moments of joy – from the first welcome to the final toast.

Whether it is a cosy corner for cocktails or an open dining area for a feast with friends and family, lighting plays a crucial role in setting the festive mood. Everything from fairy lights and candles, to ceiling pendants and wall lights, play a role in illuminating social spaces and enhancing the relaxed, joyful spirit of the season.

When it comes to choosing light fittings for the festive season and beyond, designs that celebrate a sense of playful artistry, from layered coloured glass lighting that recalls the appeal of a flower in bud, to the soft glow of an alabaster globe, are effortlessly elegant. These pieces are more than just functional lighting for mixing drinks and serving canapes; they double as sculptural statements and add visual interest

to the room. These shapes, echoed in the gentle curve of a bar stool or the delicacy of a rounded, marble topped counter, perfectly set the scene for celebration.

Sculptural pendants are trending this season and work particularly well above bars, bringing an artisanal touch of luxury to areas where we socialise. These unique designs draw the eye upward, creating height and drama in the room and providing a talking point that reflects the host's personality and curatorial eye. When chosen with care, a pendant light becomes a centrepiece, a conversation starter and a reflection of thoughtful design.

When it comes to choosing sculptural pendant lighting, opt for unexpected material or colour to make a statement.

Unique glass hues such as mocha smoke help to cast an elegant and warm diffusion that is perfect for cocktail hour. This unique hue casts a more golden glow than traditional smoked or clear glass and perfectly sets the celebratory ambience for guests, inviting them to stay for longer.

These fixtures are especially powerful when used in multiples, either clustered pendants or complemented with matching wall lights in creative compositions. Consider clustering pendants at varying heights to elevate the design and introduce

a more relaxed, contemporary feel, with matching wall lights to create a sense of cohesion across the room.

Beyond the aesthetics of festive illumination, it’s important to pay attention to the functionality of the space. Always layer different light sources to ensure the mood of the room is dynamic and can be adjusted to suit the needs and desired ambience of every occasion. Every well designed lighting scheme should feature three layers; ambient, task and accent. Ambient lighting provides the room’s overall illumination, setting the tone and

ensuring the space feels warm and inviting for your guests. Ceiling fixtures such as chandeliers and pendants are best used to achieve this balanced, shadowfree glow. Task lighting such as lighting over countertops in kitchens or table lamps focuses on specific areas where activities like cooking and cocktail mixing take place. These lights should be bright enough to reduce eye strain, yet targeted to avoid unnecessary glare. Finally, accent lighting adds depth and visual interest by highlighting architectural details, artworks or other focal points. Wall sconces, spotlights and LED strips are perfect to add this finishing touch.

As well as supporting livability and ensuring the lighting feels balanced, this layered approach creates atmosphere, allowing the mood to shift seamlessly from daytime gatherings to intimate evening soirees.

Integrating technical elements such as dimmer switches and smart lighting systems also allows vital flexibility to tailor light levels for any festive occasion – and longevity to the design for the rest of the year. As the evening evolves you want the lighting to evolve with it. Lighting should be

slightly brighter during the early evening whilst guests are catching up and gradually dimmed as the night continues until everyone is finishing their last sips.

Selecting the right bulb temperature is also vital, with a warmer colour temperature, around 2700K to 3000K, perfect for spaces where guests might gather in the evening such as bars, dining or living rooms. Cooler white toned light can sometimes feel clinical, but warmer tones echo the natural glow of firelight and sunset, effortlessly creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

When it comes to festive entertaining, it’s all about the balance of beauty and function that can elevate a space from basic to spirited. The art is in the detail, from the soft shapes of the furniture that echo throughout the room and to the colour of a light bulb, it all plays a part in creating a setting that brings people together. These layered, thoughtfully lit spaces serve as the backdrop for celebration where meaningful moments are shared.

BEAUTY

Since

1947, Jensen Beds has been crafting highquality beds in Norway – combining passion, science and craftsmanship to help you achieve a good night’s sleep

Beauty sleep isn’t just a saying – it’s science. Research shows that people are perceived as more attractive when well-rested, and that lack of sleep affects not only mood, but also skin and immune function. Good sleep is essential for how we look, feel and perform.

When you sleep well, your body gets the time it needs to repair itself, regenerate cells and clear away waste. It’s during deep, restorative sleep that both body and mind truly recover.

Sleep is a vital beauty secret that works wonders from inside out. During deep sleep, our body enters a highly regenerative state, where skin cells repair and renew themselves. This process boosts collagen production, a key protein that

keeps skin firmer and elastic, helping to prevent wrinkles and sagging. Without enough good sleep, collagen production slow downs, contributing to premature ageing and dull complexion.

Also, sleep reduces the stress hormone cortisol, which when elevated, causes inflammation, breakouts, and sensitive skin issues. Good sleep promotes blood flow to skin, delivering essential nutrients and oxygen for a radiant glow. Lack of sleep disrupts skin’s moisture balance, leading to dryness and fine lines, and increases dark circles and puffiness around eyes.

Scientific studies indicate that the critical hours between 9 pm and midnight are the best time for skin healing. So regular, restful sleep isn’t only for feeling fresh – it’s crucial for youthful, vibrant skin. Prioritising sleep is perhaps the most effective, natural way to maintain beauty over a long time.

FUTURE OF

FURNISHINGS

An expert at Sussex-based Pfeiffer Design peers into her crystal ball to see what 2026 holds in store for design

Layered, expressive and deeply personal: 2026 will be the year for rich, grounding tones that echo nature, softness in materials, boldness in light and furniture, and interiors that feel curated, intentional and inviting.

Based in Sussex, award-winning interior and architectural design studio Pfeiffer Design offers a complete end-to-end service. From concept through to completion, the talented team manages every element of the design journey to deliver a highly personalised and client-focused experience. Specialising in residential and commercial projects with a high-end feel, each design is carefully tailored to reflect the individual, their family and lifestyle blending aesthetics and functionality seamlessly. Here, interior designer Eloise Pfeiffer explains what next year may bring when it comes to the home…

Homes of 2026 will be as functional as they are beautiful, but increasingly they’ll also be designed with wellbeing in mind. We’re seeing a growing accessibility of wellness-led design principles. Once reserved for luxury projects, these are now filtering into everyday homes. From lighting schemes that support circadian rhythms to the use of colour theory to influence mood and productivity, interiors are becoming more attuned to how we feel as well as how we live. Adaptive technology, like modular lighting that shifts with your body clock, and furniture that evolves with family needs, is making homes more supportive, restorative and responsive than ever.

Say goodbye to stark whites and cool greys: 2026 is ushering in a new wave of neutrals. From gentle

sages and soothing pale blues to blush pinks and rich, grounding browns, these tones create calm, restorative backdrops while still adding personality and depth. The focus is on layering these hues for a look that feels both crisp and comfortably lived-in, striking a perfect balance between elegance and ease.

Furniture in 2026 is bold, oversized and sculptural, blurring the line between art and function. Think plush, “fat” armchairs and sofas with architectural edges: pieces that don’t just provide a place to sit, but command attention as focal points within a room. These statement seats are designed to be as comfortable as they are striking, proving that function and visual drama can go hand in hand.

In 2026, we’re expanding our design gaze beyond the four walls: floors and ceilings are becoming canvases for bold expression. Expect statement rugs that resemble artworks, dramatic tiling underfoot and unexpected ceiling palettes or sculptural lighting overhead. These layers of design elevate a room, injecting individuality and personality where people might least expect it.

Against the backdrop of AI and mass production, there’s a renewed appreciation for the imperfect and handmade. Freehand brushwork, embroidered wood detailing and textiles that celebrate irregularity are becoming celebrated markers of individuality. These crafted details add soul and personality, ensuring spaces feel human, grounded and filled with story – qualities we’ll see become even more desirable in 2026.

ADD TO THE collection

Olga and Alex Polizzi have turned their attentions to home accessories as they open a new shop next door to The Star in Alfriston

The Star in Alfriston has long been a destination venue in Sussex – and now the duo behind it have turned their attention to design, as Olga and Alex Polizzi have opened a shop right next door to their hotel.

The Polizzis bought the property, one of the oldest buildings in the village, several years ago and have been restoring it over the last ten months. COLLECTION POLIZZI has now opened, and sells a range of fashion and accessories. This includes products that can be seen at The Star, from the Italian leather keyrings that are used for the hotel bedrooms to the bespoke ceramics designed by Gabriella Shaw that includes teacups, candles, teapots, jugs, plates and dog bowls.

Alex says: "This is a completely new venture for us, and it is both exciting and nerve-wracking! Hotel guests often comment that they would like

to take some element of the hotel's design back home with them, and we are very pleased to start with this little collection. Alfriston has lots of wonderful independent shops, and we hope that COLLECTION POLIZZI will complement these, and add to Alfriston's reputation as a wonderful place to visit in East Sussex."

Located on the South Downs Way, Alfriston is popular with walkers, so COLLECTION POLIZZI also stocks rainwear including raincoats and gilets by Ilse Jacobsen, rainhats, umbrellas by BLUNT and scarves by Ochre. There is womenswear by Jacco Maricard, OSKA, American Vintage, Ilse Jacobsen and Jumper 1234. Homeware includes storage files, boxes, pen pots and memo pads by Harris & Jones, in a stunning celestial star design by Cressida Bell. COLLECTION POLIZZI sells the Wildsmith hair and body range that can be seen in rooms at The Star. Wildsmith is a British skincare and spa brand that creates clinically proven science-based products to transform

skin health and support wellbeing. Their award-winning products are formulated with lab grown actives, bioactives, botanicals, clays and minerals and biodynamically grown plants.

Olga Polizzi is Deputy Chairman and Director of Design at Rocco Forte Hotels, a company she helped her brother Rocco Forte create; it owns well known, historic hotels worldwide including Brown's in London, the Hotel de Russie in Rome and the Amigo in Brussels. Olga is the owner of The Polizzi Collection, a group of three elegant hotels across the South of England: Hotel Endsleigh in Tavistock, Devon, Hotel Tresanton in St Mawes, Cornwall and The Star, Alfriston, East Sussex, her most recent acquisition with her daughter Alex.

After reading English at Oxford University, Alex trained at the Mandarin Oriental in Hong Kong, worked for Marco Pierre White at the Criterion, helped open various Rocco Forte properties as the company began business and then set up Millers Bakery, with her ex-husband Marcus Miller. The bakery is now a 70,000 sqft operation supplying most of the fi ve star hotels, restaurants and burger joints in London and across the country. Before taking over and stamping their mark on Hotel Endsleigh in 2004, Alex, Charlie and Olga Polizzi had already launched Hotel Tresanton

at St Mawes in Cornwall in 1998. Alex then became the host of the highly acclaimed show, The Hotel Inspector, in 2008. With several series of The Hotel Inspector fi rmly under her belt, Alex's venture The Fixer hit BBC2 in January 2012. She has now done 17 years as the Hotel Inspector, and three years of travel shows in Italy and Spain as well as various restaurant programmes for the BBC and 5. In June 2021 Alex opened The Star in Alfriston, the fi rst offi cial joint venture with her mother Olga Polizzi – Channel 5 covered the renovation and opening in Alex Polizzi: My Hotel Nightmare. This third hotel in The Polizzi Collection is proving to be extremely popular, despite the challenges of opening post-Brexit and during a pandemic.

GORGEOUS

green

Feel your home is missing a festive flourish? The co-founder of Sussex’s The Little Botanical will plant a seed in your mind

There’s something quite magical about filling your home with living greenery at Christmas. At The Little Botanical, we’ve always believed that plants make a house feel like a home – and never more so than at Christmas. It’s the time of year when even the most minimal homes come alive with foliage, texture, and festive sparkle.

Of course, a Christmas tree is the traditional centrepiece, but why not embrace a whole new level of indoor greenery. From glittering succulents to classic poinsettias and petite, light up trees, now is the time to deck every corner of your home with nature.

ADD SOME LOW MAINTENANCE SUCCULENTS

It couldn’t be easier to bring greenery into your home; succulents are the secret to living festive décor. Their sculptural shapes and muted tones look stunning against candlelight and metallics – and they need very little care, even through the busy holiday season. Keep it stylish and explore our selection of mini and medium succulents that are dusted with shimmering gold tips to bring instant glamour or snowy tips to help create that magical Christmas tablescape.

ADD SOME FESTIVE COLOUR WITH BRITISH GROWN POINSETTIAS

Nothing says Christmas quite like the rich red of a poinsettia in full bloom. Bringing festive colours into your home, through nature, is a wonderful way to create a truly stylish Christmas. The Poinsettia is an ultimate Christmas classic. Either in deep red or crisp white, those green leaves against the coloured bracts will add warmth and instant festive style to your home. Perfect on a sideboard or coffee table to create an effortless focal point. Styling these plants in our pretty ceramics can help create a more contemporary look.

OPT FOR A LIVING CHRISTMAS TREE

Unlike cut trees, living trees can be cared for long after Christmas, offering a greener choice that celebrates the season year after year. An added bonus is that living trees naturally purify the air in addition to bringing a touch of greenery to your home. Our carefully curated selection of living Christmas trees brings natural beauty into every corner – from mantlepieces to hallways, and even bedrooms.

Our Mini Christmas Trees with Pom Pom Garlands in pink glazed ceramics are perfect for a child’s bedroom or a great addition to a corner of a living room is our XL Baby Blue Christmas Tree, measuring up to 90cm tall.

Whether you’re drawn to glittering succulents, classic poinsettias, or petite trees with personality,

festive greenery is the key to transforming your home this season. Mix textures, play with metallics, and don’t be afraid to go green – literally. You can also layer your greenery by combining succulents on shelves, poinsettias on tabletops, and a small living tree in the corner for a beautifully balanced festive look. So, this Christmas, embrace the joy of natural décor. Light a few candles, string up those fairy lights, and let your home bloom with festive life.

From lions and pandas, to dragons, treasure and time travel, the magic of stories filled classrooms across the Chichester district as Children’s BookFest returned from 7th-9th October.

Organised by the Children’s BookFest charity (CBF), the annual festival brings together schools and authors in a unique celebration of books.

Over three days, 28 celebrated children’s authors visited 27 local schools, delivering interactive workshops, readings and Q&As to pupils in Key Stages 1 and 2. This year’s line-up included Iszi Lawrence, Jenny McLachlan, Smriti Halls, Guy Bass, Zehra Hicks, Piers Torday and many more – with 19 authors taking part for the first time.

One of the most powerful moments of Bookfest comes at the end of each visit, when every child is given their own signed copy of the author’s book – to keep forever. Echoing the surprise and joy felt across the room, one Southbourne Junior School pupil exclaimed: “We actually get to keep this – and it’s signed by the author?”

For many authors, the event is just as

WORD POWER

Children’s BookFest returned to Chichester in October, inspiring the younger generation to enjoy reading

special. Jenny McLachlan, author of Dragon Riders of Roar, has seen its impact first-hand: “Children’s BookFest pulls children into the magic and excitement of reading and no-one is left behind. I’ve seen reluctant readers become avid readers over the course of a day, and the e ects last – it often just takes one positive engagement with a book to turn a child from thinking this isn’t for me, to this is me!”

The need for initiatives like this is clear. According to the National Literacy Trust, two in five children aged 5-8 from disadvantaged backgrounds don’t own a single book, and three in ten 11-yearolds in Chichester leave primary school reading below the expected level.

CBF raises funds year-round to make Children’s BookFest possible, with recent events including An Evening with Michael Morpurgo, Kate Mosse and Kevin McCloud, and a lively ‘draw-o ’ between Sophy Henn and Nick Sharratt.

Teachers also recognise its value. Luke Hanna, Head of Jessie Younghusband School, described it as: “One of the highlights of our school year. Ensuring that every single child not only meets an

author, but goes home with their own copy of the book is a really special occasion which the pupils love. The excitement in the school is palpable during the visits and improves children’s engagement with reading – especially for those who are normally harder to engage.”

Georgina Lippiett, Festival Director, added: “We were thrilled to welcome so many new authors this year while continuing to work with loyal friends of the festival. Children’s BookFest is months in the making and each year we’re reminded of the importance of this event – more and more children are adding to their personal libraries and growing their love of literature.” With stories to spark imagination and books to treasure forever, Children’s BookFest 2025 once again showed the joy and power of reading. The team at Children’s BookFest are currently busy planning for their BookFest events across schools in the Bognor Regis area in February 2026.

WHEN CHILDREN BELONG, THEY BELIEVE

WHERE THE MAGIC

BEGINS

And believing turns to becoming. Exploring what makes Clayesmore so special

Wouldn’t every child love to go to Hogwarts?

Clayesmore is about as close as you can get, not just because of its iconic turret or incredible food, but because it’s a place where every child discovers their own special strengths. Whether you’re curious and creative, bold and adventurous, thoughtful and kind, or driven and determined, Clayesmore is where you discover who you are – and all you can become.

Tucked away in the rolling Dorset countryside, Clayesmore has spent over 130 years weaving this quiet kind of magic – the kind that doesn’t rely on spells, but on connection, care, and curiosity. Success here isn’t defined by a single path; it’s a journey that unfolds uniquely for each individual.

Clayesmore is a school where every child is known – not just by name, but by nature. Teachers recognise each child’s spark, strengths, and story, and

in that recognition, children experience something transformative: belonging. When a young person feels seen, understood, and valued, something extraordinary happens – they begin to believe, and from that belief comes possibility.

The journey begins in the Prep School, where specialist teaching in art, design, music, languages, and sport helps children explore their gifts and build a foundation not just for learning, but for life.

As students move into the Senior School, the world opens wider. The curriculum challenges and inspires, encouraging each child to shine – whether through science or sculpture, coding or climbing, drama or debate – while building resilience, leadership, and independence.

Boarding is the heart of Clayesmore, a close-knit community where trust, support, and respect guide every moment. It’s a home where friendships flourish, individual strengths are celebrated, and pupils learn the enchantment of caring for others.

Sixth Form, students stand tall in their own stories. Small class sizes, expert guidance, and a wide choice of A-levels and BTECs give each individual the freedom and support to carve their own path. As one grandparent reflected: “Clayesmore has given our grandchildren an exceptional education, strong values, and the confidence to take on the next stage of their lives.”

When children belong, they believe; and when they believe, they become – scholars, artists, visionaries, leaders – whatever their story is meant to be. If you’re searching for a school that o ers more than results, Clayesmore is ready to welcome you.

Chichester Cathedral

A new exhibition opening early in 2026 celebrates an iconic tapestry

In 1966, Chichester Cathedral unveiled one of Britain’s most daring post-war art commissions – a vivid tapestry behind its High Altar by celebrated artist and printmaker John Piper (1903-1992). Now, 60 years on, the Cathedral announces a major exhibition for 2026 to celebrate this ground-breaking work.

On display from 13th February-15th November 2026, the exhibition will uncover the story behind the tapestry’s creation, the people and patrons who shaped the commission, and the artwork’s lasting impact on the Cathedral’s life.

Commissioned by the visionary Dean Walter Hussey (Dean of Chichester, 19551977), the tapestry remains one of the most significant ecclesiastical artworks of the 20th century. Striking, colourful and dramatic, it continues to inspire reflection and wonder six decades on.

The tapestry consists of seven towering panels, designed to cover the oak screen behind the High Altar with bold, abstract imagery. Woven in France by Pinton Frères, the work reimagines sacred themes through a modernist lens, using graphic forms and vivid colour to depict the Holy Trinity, the gospel writers Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, and the elements of creation.

Produced by Chichester-based designers StudioMoo, the 2026 exhibition brings the story of the tapestry to life through personal correspondence, including between John Piper and Dean Hussey. It also showcases alternative designs for the tapestry as well as vestments designed by Piper, o ering rare insight into the creative collaboration behind this iconic work.

The Dean of Chichester, the Very Reverend Dr Edward Dowler, says: “Chichester Cathedral has long explored and celebrated the Christian faith through visual art, with works spanning the building’s rich 950-year history.

John Piper’s tapestry, dedicated on 20th September 1966, illuminated the Cathedral and was the source of both inspiration and some controversy. This new exhibition invites visitors to explore the imaginative and sacred journey behind its creation.” Running alongside the exhibition will be a public programme, including a major community weaving event in February, talks and specialist tours. A complementary exhibition of new artworks by contemporary artist Alice Carter (ASHES TO FIRE, 13th February5th April 2026) will o er a striking dialogue with Piper’s masterpiece.

Full programme details will be announced in the coming months: see more at chichestercathedral.org.uk
