Cheshire CHATTER

Jennifer Delgado prepares for spooky season and the return of Strictly

October is one of my favourite months, it seems to just wrap its arms around you. The mornings are chilly, the evenings are darker, and suddenly the little rituals of the season become the highlights of the week. Whether itís pulling on your boots, layering up in knitwear, or curling up in front of the fire with a glass of wine, autumn has well and truly arrived in Cheshire. (And you don't have to fake tan as much Hoorah!)

Of course, October wouldnít be complete without a bit of a spooky season would it? From pumpkin picking with the kiddies and Halloween parties to ghost tours and eerie country walks, the county is full of fun ways to embrace the slightly more magical side of the month.

And of course, we can't forget the highlight of many peoplesí months Taylor Swiftís new

album launch. Praying the BTS film comes to the UK, otherwise Ashley Rudd might make me hop on a plane to NYC just to get a glimpse. Wouldnít be the worst thing I guess. For me personally though, the weekends from now on will be all about the fight for the glitter ball trophy. Strictly Come Dancing is back on our screens and I, for one, canít wait. My money is on either Lewis Cope or Dani Dyer to win but weíll see! And we can't forget everyoneís favourite Friday night treat

The Graham Norton Show. It's become somewhat of a ritual in our house. We don't often stay awake to watch it live (unless Jamie Dornan or James Norton is on it) but on Saturday mornings we tuck into some brekky and a brew and watch the episode from the night before.

October really does feel like the perfect month to just wrap up, stay cosy and if you do need to leave the house, make sure to buy all the candles in homesense to get you through to November.

And don't worry, if youíre not a pumpkin spice latte flavoured candle kinda person, itís safe to say their selection is top tier. My husband actually dreads when I walk back through the door with a home sense bag because he knows the joint account has been drained for all the candle goodies sorry Jack!

Georgie Codd heads to Nantwich Bookshop for a very special event

An acclaimed nonfiction author who searched for father figures by placing adverts – or “dadverts” – in newspapers and magazines will come to Nantwich Bookshop on 29th October to share the story of her adventure.

Georgie Codd – who began the personal project aged 31, a er being inspired by a stranger’s practical joke – will talk about the events that shape her second book, Never Had a Dad: Adventures in Fatherlessness (William Collins). Described by The Times as a “dating quest with a difference”, and the Daily Mail as a “strange, touching but o en very funny account of one woman’s search for a father figure”, Never Had a Dad is now under option for a TV series.

Georgie says: “I can’t wait to talk about fathers, families and other adventures with local readers in Nantwich. The dad project o en sparks some seriously engaging conversations.”

Georgie’s first book, We Swim To The Shark – a nonfiction adventure about the sea, scuba diving, and the roots of fear – was published by Fleet in 2020. Two years later, the personal quest behind Never Had a Dad caught the attention of the hit US radio show This American Life. The paperback was published in June, and the story has so far been featured by the BBC World Service, The Express, i News and others.

Feeling SPOOKED

Liverpool couple Stacey

Dooley

and Kevin Clifton discuss starring together in 2:22 - A Ghost Story and heading out on tour as a family

As the first real≠life couple to star in 2:22 A Ghost Story, Stacey Dooley and Kevin Clifton, who live in Liverpool, are relishing the chance to work together again. Itís been seven years since they took the Glitterball Trophy on Strictly Come Dancing And that feels like a really long time ago, says Stacey now.

The presenter, journalist and actress starred in the smash≠hit thriller for a limited run at the Gielgud Theatre in the West End in 2024. She played Jenny, a young mother who along with her husband Sam has recently moved into a house that they are in the process of renovating. Every night at precisely 2:22am they

hear strange and disconcerting sounds in a nerve≠shredding thriller. Written by Danny Robins and premiering in 2021, it was one of dancer and musical theatre star Kevinís favourite plays even before he saw Stacey in it. So that was another reason for us to say yes to the tour, he says.

The couple are parents to two≠year≠old Minnie and theyíll be taking her on the road with them when they embark on the 2:22 tour until late November, with Stacey admitting: Of course, travelling the country with a two≠year≠old will bring its own stresses, but itís great that we can all be together as a family.

The couple are speaking ahead of rehearsals. And I think the first day or so in the rehearsal room will be interesting, Kevin muses. Thereís the real you when

youíre hanging out with your mates or your family, then thereís the work version of you, and it feels odd when friends or family see the work version of you because theyíre used to the real you. Stace knows everything about me and the way I am in normal life, so for us to become these di erent characters with each other will be quite funny until we relax into it.

Itís a very di erent dynamic to the one they had on Strictly, with Stacey noting: Kev was the expert in that instance and he knew Strictly inside out. I felt incredibly well looked after and it was like a teacher≠ student relationship. With 2:22 Stacey has done the play before and itís Kevinís first non≠musical. So itís like a role reversal, she says. Has she given him any pointers? They both laugh as Stacey jokes: Iíve told

him 'Listen Kev, Iím very happy to nurture new talent, so if you have any questions or concerns donít hesitate to ask!'

In the edge≠of≠the≠seat story, Jenny is convinced the house is haunted, but Sam is having none of it. When their old friend Lauren and her new partner Ben come round for dinner, belief and scepticism clash and they agree to stay up until 2:22 to try and find out whatís really going on.

For Stacey, Jenny is a relatable character. We can either see parts of ourselves in Jenny or weíve got pals who remind us of her. Sheís a mum whoís just trying to find her feet, so I can relate to her on that level too. When you have a baby youíre like 'Oh, God, who am I apart from Mum?'

Kevin sees Sam as an equally recognisable character. We all know at least one Sam in our circles someone whoís a bit of a know≠it≠all, who has read a few things on social media and now considers himself an expert. Is Kevin anything like Sam? I donít think so but maybe I used to be. When I was in my early 20s I liked going against the grain of everyoneís opinions. For example, if youíd told me you liked a particular pop song Iíd say, 'Well, thatís because theyíve taken it from another song from the 70s and itís actually not an original idea'. Iíve grown out of that now.

Thereís another big di!erence. Jenny and Samís dynamic is a world away from how me and Kev interact, Stacey is keen to point out. Weíre pretty chill. We havenít got the kind of head≠ butty relationship that they have.

Since its 2021 premiere 2:22 has enjoyed a series of West End residences and headed out on its first UK tour in 2023. It has also played Los Angeles, Australia and Ireland, and Stacey thinks it attracts return visits. Itís one of those shows where once youíve seen it youíre tempted to go and see it a second or third time because thereís so much to it, and itís even more intriguing once youíre aware of how it ends.

Without giving spoilers, Kevin chimes in with: Itís cleverly≠written, itís very

interesting in terms of the subject matter, and itís also entertaining all the way through. Not naming names, he adds: You go and watch some plays and theyíre like pure entertainment with not much depth to them. Others are really highbrow and you sort of need a manual to understand them. This one hits the sweet spot.

Kevin started out as a professional dancer before his seven≠year tenure on Strictly turned him into a household name. Since leaving the show he has starred in such musicals as Rock of Ages, War of the Worlds, Strictly Ballroom and Chicago, but this will mark his first time appearing in a straight play.

Iím trying to play it cool, he grins, but Iím really excited about this moment. Iím a huge fan of 2:22 and when I first saw it I thought 'Iíd love to be part of this play'. I love theatre and I love doing musicals, but as Iíd been saying to Stace, 'At some point doing a straight play is the goal'. Now itís a reality and Iím buzzing about it.

They both have their theories as to why theatregoers enjoy a good thriller. Thereís something about scary stu! that takes you to the edge of your emotions,

ìScary stu takes you to the edge of your emotionsî

Kevin feels, and maybe thereís a bit of safety in numbers for the audience where theyíre all in it together. Theyíre on the edge of their seats, waiting to see whatís going to happen next.

For the record, Kevin scares easily when it comes to horror stories, Stacey not so much. And in real life? The only thing I canít deal with is rodents, she grimaces. There was a mouse in the kitchen of a house weíve been doing up and I told Kev 'Weíll have to move'. He wasnít fazed, laughing: My fears are more about kind of deep existential stu!

Getting to tour together in a play was one of the main draws for a couple whose busy schedules often keep them apart. Kev is on tour a lot and heíll be all over the place, Stacey says, and if Iím at work often my locations are further afield. The timing is right and itís probably the last time we can do something like this before Minnie will be three or four, and weíll be thinking about preschool and stu! like that.

Kevin smiles again: Weíre striking while the iron is hot.

Absolutely visits a new exhibition at RIBA North + Tate Liverpool that celebrates iconic football stadiums

with modern ambition, Hill Dickinson Stadium marks a transformative new chapter for Everton FC and North Liverpool. The stadium o cially opened in 2025 and boasts a capacity of 52,769 seats, making it one of the largest football venues in England and the 11th largest in Britain. It replaces Goodison Park as Evertonís new home and is a striking bowl≠shaped structure that combines traditional brickwork with contemporary steel and glass design, conceived by MEIS Architects and Pattern Design.

Home Ground: The Architecture of Football, the new exhibition at RIBA North + Tate Liverpool, highlights the history of football stadium design from the 1890s to the present day, exploring some of the gameís most iconic grounds. Inspired by Everton FCís new Hill Dickinson Stadium in Liverpool, the exhibition features more than 50 stadiums from around the world. Through architectural models, photographs and archive material, visitors will gain insight into how architecture plays a pivotal role in the stadium experience, not only serving as a venue for sport, but as a cultural landmark and focal point for the local community and fans alike.

The exhibition presents the history of stadium design, beginning with Archibald Leitch, who designed stadia for many leading clubs at the beginning of the 20th century, including Everton, Chelsea and Rangers. Modern stadiums are then explored through the works of leading contemporary architecture practices, such as BDP, Populous, Herzog & de Meuron, gmp von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects, alongside archival material from clubs and cities across Europe. Absolutely takes a look at some of the impressive structures featured.

HILL DICKINSON STADIUM, LIVERPOOL

The brand≠new home ground of Everton FC at Bramley≠Moore Dock, blending the areaís industrial heritage with modern design. Bridging Liverpoolís rich industrial heritage

The venue isnít just a football ground: itís a multifunctional, year≠round destination o ering conference spaces, exhibition halls, corporate dinners, and outdoor events designed to host activities 365 days a year. Beyond sport, its construction has driven urban regeneration transforming a long≠derelict dock site into a vibrant waterfront precinct attracting tourism, bars, infrastructure upgrades, and commercial development.

STADIO ARTEMIO FRANCHI, FLORENCE

An early project by the maestro of concrete engineering, Pier Luighi Nervi, Artemio Franchi is currently the home of ACF Fiorentina in Florence, Italy. O cially inaugurated on 13th September 1931 with a Fiorentina vs Admira Wien match (1ñ0), the stadium reached completion in 1932 and now has a seating capacity of 47,282.

The stadium is celebrated as a masterpiece of Italian Rationalism. Its design includes pioneering features like cantilevered roofs without supports, spiral ramps, and the 70m Marathon Tower, all fashioned in reinforced concrete, a bold and cost≠e ective structural solution of the era.

HILLDICKINSONSTADIUM (C) BDP EVERTON FC

Currently, the stadium is undergoing a major €95 million redevelopment led by Arup and Mario Cucinella Architects. The plan introduces a sleek, lightweight roof and modern amenities while preserving Nerviís iconic elements. The first phase is aimed for completion by Florenceís 2026 celebrations, with full modernisation expected by 2029.

STADIO GIUSEPPE MEAZZA, MILAN

Remodelled extensively after the Italia 90 World Cup, Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, better known as the San Siro Stadium, is the home stadium of the two biggest teams in Milan. The San Siro stands as Italyís most capacious and emblematic football stadium. O cially opened on 19th September 1926, it

was commissioned by AC Milan president Piero Pirelli and designed in an English≠ style without an athletics track placing fans closer to the pitch by architects Ulisse Stacchini and Alberto Cugini. Originally accommodating 35,000 spectators, the stadium progressively expanded. In the 1950s and especially ahead of the 1990 FIFA World Cup, a third tier was added with support from 11 cylindrical concrete towers and a sweeping roof raising capacity to around 80,000.

Renamed in March 1980 in honour of the legendary two≠time World Cup winner Giuseppe Meazza, the name ìSan Siroî remains commonly used, especially among AC Milan fans, while Inter supporters often use the Meazza title.

Looking ahead, both Milan clubs are exploring options to modernise or replace San Siro. Redevelopment is complicated by its protected status, particularly the towers and second tier built in 1955, which cannot be significantly altered. Proposals include a new adjacent 71,500≠seat stadium, potentially repurposing parts of the current structure into a cultural or heritage site. The push comes as Italy prepares for Euro 2032, with the government urging infrastructure upgrades to boost club revenues and meet tournament standards.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR STADIUM, LONDON

Designed by Populous, this modern stadium is the largest club stadium in London and, thanks to its retractable pitch, the first in the world to be purpose≠built for the NFL outside the US. Inaugurated in April 2019 on the former site of White Hart Lane, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium o cially opened on 3rd April 2019 with a Premier League match against Crystal Palace. Boasting a seating capacity of approximately 62,850, the stadium features

ST JAMES'PARKEASTSTAND (C) RIBACOLLECTIONS
THE SAN SIRO

sweeping cantilevers, steep 35∞ stands, and unrivalled proximity to the action for fans. At the southern end lies the 17,500≠ seat single≠tier South Stand the largest in the UK designed to recreate the intensity of Dortmundís ìYellow Wallî.

The real standout is the worldís first dividing, retractable football pitch, comprising three grass segments that slide out to reveal an artificial surface underneath for NFL games, concerts, and other events. This switch takes just 25 minutes, enabling seamless multi≠use adaptability. Tottenhamís stadium is also a sustainability powerhouse: powered by 100% renewable energy, championing zero waste≠to≠landfill, and promoting eco≠friendly transport access.

More than a football ground, the venue is a 365≠day community and entertainment hub featuring Europeís longest bar at 86m in the Market Place, a microbrewery, the Dare Skywalk experience atop the South Stand, F1≠style indoor karting, fine dining rooms, club museums, and even an art gallery housed within a restored 400≠year≠old listed building.

ALLIANZ ARENA, MUNICH

Opened in 2005 ahead of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, the Allianz Arena quickly became a global icon of modern stadium design. Conceived by the renowned Swiss architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron and engineered with ArupSport, this striking venue was completed in under three years groundbreaking began in October 2002, and it o cially opened on 30th May 2005.

What makes the Arena immediately recognisable is its exterior: a shimmering shell made of over 2,700 diamond≠shaped ETFE cushions that can glow in di erent colours red for FC Bayern Munich, blue for TSV 1860 Munich, or white for national fixtures earning it nicknames like ìinflatable boatî or ìbubbleî. This colour≠ changing faÁade is more than aesthetic: the ETFE membrane is translucent, durable, self≠cleaning, and allows natural light to permeate the structure, benefiting the pitch and overall energy e ciency. With a capacity of approximately 75,000 spectators for domestic matches and about 70,000 for international games, Allianz Arena ranks among Germanyís largest stadiums. Sustainability and fan experience are at the core of its design. The Arena integrates rainwater collection, energy≠e cient lighting, and strong public transit access via the U≠Bahn at Frˆttmaning. Its tiered interior o ers excellent sightlines and acoustics, enhancing the match≠day atmosphere.

ESTADIO SANTIAGO BERNABÉU, MADRID

Since its inauguration on 14th December 1947, with Real Madrid defeating Os Belenenses, the Santiago BernabÈu Stadium with an initial capacity of around 75,145 has stood as one of footballís most iconic venues. Originally named Nuevo Estadio ChamartÌn, it was o cially renamed in 1955 in honour of

club president Santiago BernabÈu. Throughout the decades, the stadium underwent several transformative renovations. In 1955, its capacity expanded to 125,000; for the 1982 World Cup, a roof was added and seating reduced to around 90,000 to enhance coverage and modernisation. Between 2001 and 2006, upgrades included VIP facilities, expanded seating reaching approximately 80,354, enhanced hospitality, and a new faÁade earning it UEFA Elite Stadium status in 2007.

From 2019 to 2024, the stadium underwent a sweeping €1≠1.5 billion redevelopment led by gmp Architekten, L35 Ribas & Ribas, fundamentally reimagining its aesthetics and capabilities. A dynamic stainless≠steel louvered faÁade envelops the structure, providing natural ventilation while enabling dramatic LED light projections for immersive visual displays. Key technological innovations include a retractable roof, sheltering events regardless of weather; a multi≠layered retractable pitch, stored in an underground ìhypogeumî with built≠in climate control, allowing seamless conversion between football and non≠sport events; and a 360∞ video scoreboard, wrapping the interior with immersive visuals.

Home Ground: The Architecture of Football at Gallery One, Tate Liverpool + RIBA North, is open from 15th October to 6th January 2026. Find out more at tate.org.uk

During our research for the Tarporley special, Absolutely also ventured to Bunbury, namely Tillyís, as we joined a wonderful group of people at the launch of their Chatty CafÈ mornings. Guests included Mayor David Edwardes, Aphra Brandreth MP, Councillor Becky Posnett, a host of local residents, and Charles, a Crewe resident who has been an inspiring part of this initiative. Charles, who is 86 years young (almost 87!), is the reason Tillyís chose Thursday

Treasured possessions

The Gold & Silver Roadshow events head to Cheshire this month, an opportunity to cash in on a host of vintage objects

There will be two separate Gold & Silver Roadshows across Cheshire over the course of October, with special one≠day events being held at: The Salford Novotel West Hotel, Worsley Brow, Salford, M28 2YA on 14th and 15th October; and Royal Oak Pub & Premier Inn Hotel, High Street, Bromborough, Wirral, CH62 7EX on 25th October

What can you expect at these events?

A Jewellery & Coin Roadshow will be held at the Bromborough Royal Oak. A very lucky couple called at one of their recent roadshow events with a couple of old gold chains and a silver charm bracelet and a bag of old silver coins. They were paid over £1,600 just for the coins alone. They turned out to be pre 1947 silver coins that were normal currency a few years ago and are now highly collected.

Like most people, who can only dream of winning the pools or the lottery, a lot of normal households have a hidden treasure of old gold

jewellery, silver jewellery, teapots, trophies, trays and old objets díart. Why not get a free valuation from an expert at one of the roadshows?

There is no queuing and their experts will give you a one on one appraisal of the value of your treasured possessions in a private area, where there are no prying eyes, watching the process evolve. If you like the valuation, their expert will make you the same o er in cash which you can accept or decline at no cost to yourself.

Anything can be an unearthed treasure. Any old British or foreign coins. Any old wrist watches or pocket watches. All chains, bracelets, rings and bangles broken or not and in any condition. If you think it is a diamond ring, bring

it along and they will confirm it to be genuine. If you have an old trophy or tankard or any silver coloured items, let them value them for you. Old war medals and old Masonic medals can be very valuable. You will be surprised to hear that they have paid thousands of pounds for certain war medals and even the General Service Medal group is worth bringing especially if you have the original box. Also of great interest are old military uniforms, tunics, hats and any army, navy or RAF field gear. There are rarely any queues at the events and they can normally o er a valuation within a few minutes. They will give you a free valuation on which they back up with a cash o er, there and then. Get looking now in your old drawers, cupboards, and jewellery boxes. Look in the loft and the cellar, even old broken or squashed items of jewellery and silver are valuable. Of particular interest are gold and silver cigarette cases, Vesta Cases, thimbles, candlesticks, trays and all things silver are needed. Pocket watches in gold and silver and all wristwatches by: Rolex, Cartier, Omega, Longine, IWC are particularly in demand.

BRIDGES BUILDING

When home improvements go wrongand how you can protect yourself

For many homeowners, investing in renovations is about more than bricks and mortar, itís about creating a home that reflects your lifestyle. Whether itís a new kitchen or an extension to accommodate growing family needs, the process can be exciting but it can also be stressful. So what happens when things donít go as planned? Unfortunately, disputes with builders and contractors are more common than many people realise, and they can turn a dream project into a costly and frustrating experience.

COMMON CAUSES OFDISPUTES

Home improvement disputes often arise from: Delays projects taking far longer than promised. Quality issues work not meeting expected standards. Cost disagreements surprise charges or budgets spiralling out of control. Communication breakdowns misunderstandings about what was agreed.

PROTECTINGYOURSELF FROMTHE START

The most e ective way to avoid disputes is to take precautions before work begins: Always put agreements in writing (including timelines, costs, and scope of work). Check that your contractor is properly insured and accredited. Keep a record of all correspondence, invoices and payments.

Donít pay large sums up front. Agree on staged payments tied to progress.

WHENPROBLEMSDOARISE

If youíre unhappy with the work, start by raising concerns directly with the contractor. Many issues can be resolved with open communication. If that fails, it is sensible to seek legal advice early on. Whilst court proceedings should generally be a last resort, there are other ways to resolve matters e ectively.

Mediation can be a constructive first step. A neutral and impartial mediator helps both parties explore solutions without the expense of going to court.

Expert determination may be appropriate if thereís a technical disagreement over quality or compliance.

DISPUTERESOLUTION

Litigation can be lengthy, costly, and damaging to relationships. Alternative dispute resolution methods are usually faster, more cost≠e ective and confidential, helping you move on and enjoy your home. A solicitor can advise you on the most suitable approach for your circumstances. By taking precautions at the outset, maintaining clear communication and seeking advice quickly when issues arise, you can minimise stress, protect your investment, and ultimately focus on enjoying the home youíve worked hard to create.

one to NOTE

Award-winning chef Andrew Sheridan has already dazzled diners in Liverpool and the Wirral, and now Chester is all set to be added to the menu

When Absolutely Cheshire launched, there was only one chef we wanted to profile in this section: Andrew Sheridan. His 8 by Andrew Sheridan in Liverpool was garnering widespread praise, and richly deserved it was too but even we couldnít have imagined how quickly his foodie expertise was set to spread back then. Open Restaurant Group (ORG), owned by Andrew and his business partners Sam and Emma Morgan, has announced it is taking over the site of the Michelin≠ rated Da Noi in Bridge Street, Chester, rebranding it as Noted. The acquisition takes the number of restaurants owned by the group to eight. This includes the aforementioned flagship 3AA Rosette restaurant 8 by Andrew Sheridan in Liverpool, OXA in The Wirral, and Dishes in Prestatyn. We expect Noted to reach similar heights and decided to chat to the chef about what has brought him to Chester.

Q What was it about the Da Noi site that caught your eye?

A I have always liked Chester it is where I trained to become a professional chef, after all. When the site of Da Noi in Bridge Street became available, I knew it was the right spot. Itís in a great location, and was the ideal size for the type of dining experience we wanted to o!er.

Q Have you been a regular visitor to Chester in recent years?

A Chester isnít too far from where I live so it is definitely somewhere I visit when I want to eat out. I think over the last few years, standards and variety have been rising the town just gets better and better, and I am very much looking forward to adding Noted to that scene.

Q Where did you work in Chester and how do you look back on your time there?

A I moved to Chester to become a professional chef after starting out in pubs. I worked at the bistro at ABode Hotel before quickly moving up to Michael Cainesís fine dining restaurant, where I worked under Stuart Collins. It was a really important time for me in my career as it cemented the fact that I wanted to become a professional chef and gave me the confidence to move on to the opportunities that followed.

Q So Noted: what inspired the name?

A Noted is exactly what we will be noted, remembered, of significance!

Q What can we expect from this opening?

A With Noted, we wanted to o!er an all≠day dining concept, casual but focussed on delicious, locally sourced ingredients with a well≠executed wine list and plenty of British wines. Itís not fine dining, more relaxed than that weíll o!er a great burger, for example.

Q Can you give us an idea of the types of dishes we will be able to enjoy?

A We are currently working on menu development, but some of the dishes weíve got lined up include Noted Sealed Burger with Tru e Butter; Green Thai Fish Curry with Coconut Sticky Rice and Cashew; and Chocolate Mousse with Olive Oil and Maldon Sea Salt. Itíll be utterly delicious just the kind of food you want to eat!

Q With autumn around the corner, what kind of ingredients are you looking forward to using on the menu?

A Gosh, so many delicious ingredients as we move into autumn. Expect to see seasonal roots such as squash, earthy fruits like newly harvested apples and blackberries. A bit of game might make an appearance although like I say, Noted will be more casual, less fine dining, more everyday indulgence.

Q Will you make full use of the Cheshire suppliers around you?

A All our restaurants focus on whatís local and whatís in season, so we will most definitely make the most of Cheshireís rich larder of suppliers. It is such a great area for wonderful meat, dairy and fruit and vegetables.

Q How do you plan to oversee the eight establishments ORG will now own?

A My work is very much in an executive chefís role these days. I work with the head chefs and sta! at each site, implementing menus and training them in the high standards we are proud of. I divide time across the sites, but I can still be found in the kitchen usually at 8 or Dishes in Prestatyn, near to where I live.

Q How are things going at 8 by Andrew Sheridan?

A Restaurant 8 is going brilliantly, thank you. Weíve retained the three AA Rosettes we are very proud of, and the food and service continues to improve. We are always fully booked tooÖ I guess that says it all. Customer satisfaction is what is really important to us.

Q AndÖ any more plans for expansion to come?

A Oh yes! We are always on the look out for the next ORG site.

Absolutely chats to NINE Mill Street Head Chef, Che Pereira, about Nantwich, in fluences and creativity

Q Itís been two years since NINE Mill Street opened, situated in the market town of Nantwich and housed in a beautiful Grade II listed building serving a delicacy of pan Asian small plates but why pan Asian?

A I believe Nantwich is a real cultural hot spot for food and drink. When we started NINE, I wanted to represent part of my experience of travelling around the world, di erent cultures, ingredients, and make it part of the fabric of NINE Mill Streetís food culture. We also wanted to provide a unique and distinctive dining and social experience in Cheshire.

Q When you say unique, could you elaborate?

A In a sense our kitchen culture is based on modern sophisticated street foodî. Things like prawn doughnuts, duck and lettuce taco parcels, chicken satay served with cucumber kimchi and gochujang peanut sauce, are all done with a twist and a unique perspective on traditional dishes.

Q Who are your influences and people you look to for inspiration?

A I look for inspiration from my culture, as I am of Portuguese and Asian descent. The European and Asian cultures have always been harmonised in the food in our family for generations. Influences in cooking would have to be French gastronomy as I was trained in that from a young age, and of course my mother, who cooked everyday while we were growing up. I suppose I was her sous chef so to speak, although she would probably say commis chef, I was very young!

Q How do you manage creativity in the kitchen whilst managing a busy restaurant?

A Organisation is key. Creativity is not an on/o! button. For my cuisine, creativity must be lived and experienced. I never stop creating, my team and I will construct a dish that might have had a year of testing before we place it on the menu. If a dish is not quite right, we shelve it and get back to work refining it another time.

There are always dishes that are being developed, so thereís a constant flow that challenges the team to find solutions. The sta! all benefit where this is concerned because they get to blind taste dishes and provide feedback before they make it to the final menu. It also makes the process part of the fabric of NINE, everyone is involved in the creative process.

Q What are the modern challenges of having a restaurant in todayís climate?

A Rising costs in the global market has significantly impacted the price of ingredients, amongst other things. This squeezes profit margins and forces owners into making di cult decisions about pricing. Balancing costs and quality are a delicate act to ensure competitive pricing, and customer retention who are also feeling the pinch. It is one of the reasons we decided to do small plate cuisine where the decision to have more variety at a smaller price per plate works for the consumer.

EFFECT

Absolutely discovers the story behind Congleton-based WILD & WILD and its wellness o erings

WILD & WILD is a fast≠growing collective rooted in wellness and dedicated to supporting women in business. Based in Congleton, it o ers events, wellness summits, subscriptions and more all created for women seeking meaningful connection in a calm, nurturing environment. Increasingly, theyíre seeing companies turn to WILD & WILD for sta retreats, as interest in this space continues to rise. It typifies how the public are taking much more interest in their wellbeing than ever before, and founder April Wild explains how they are leading the way.

Q When did you launch WILD & WILD and what did you initially o er?

A We launched WILD & WILD as a vegan cafe back in 2018 and it soon became an award≠winning brand after appearing on BBCís Homes Under the Hammer. Then in 2023, after the ups and downs of lockdown and a loss in the family, we decided to sell the cafe, and I relaunched as a women s empowerment and wellness brand. Initially, I started with small mummy brunch clubs, yoga classes, and local wellness walks just creating space for women to come together and feel seen. It quickly grew into something much bigger to now where we host monthly sold out events.

Q Was wellness always a key part of what you o ered?

A Wellness has always been part of who I am Iíve taught yoga for over a decade, but the way we now integrate holistic wellness into everything we do has definitely evolved. Itís not just about movement or nutrition, but also mental health, community, nervous system support, and personal development. We were in shock within our first year to win an EVAs award (Enterprise Vision Awards) in the Health and Wellness Category and this month I will be a judge for the EVAs.

Q You recently held one of your Wellness Summits. Who took part and what were some of the key messages from the event?

A Our latest Wellness Summit brought together over 350 people, artisan businesses, food stalls, wellness teachers and some incredible guest speakers from brain health specialists, doctors and nutritionists to founders and female leaders. The core message was this: you donít have to do it all alone. We all thrive in community. We also explored burnout prevention, the science of feminine cycles, ADHD support, and how we can lead more intuitively and sustainably in business and life.

Q Do you sense more people are keen to improve their own way of life?

A Absolutely. Thereís a real shift happening. People are craving more than hustle and overwhelm. They want to feel well, aligned, and connected to something bigger. I think women especially are realising they deserve to feel good. Not just survive, but thrive.

Q What kind of retreats do you help to organise?

A Our retreats are deeply restorative and transformational. We host one≠day retreats and full weekend immersions focused on yoga, sound healing, nature therapy, breathwork and seasonal rituals. We also host mama retreats, pregnancy circles, and now o er lots of team and corporate wellness retreats too.

Q What do you love about being based in Congleton?

A Itís home. Thereís something so grounding about the hills, the rivers, and the way the community supports each other. Itís also a perfect balance between rural peace and access to growing towns with amazing women doing amazing

things. I still o er some events in my hometown, but like to expand them across Cheshire to meet a range of women.

Q What are your plans for the future of WILD & WILD?

A Weíre just getting started. The dream is to build out our ambassador programme across the UK, so more women can host our events locally. Weíre also working on a new WILD & WILD digital membership, a podcast, and launching corporate wellness into more companies. But most of all, weíre building a movement of women who are ready to live fully, support each other, and grow wild and free.

Best foot FORWARD

Sarah Johnson is the owner of Forest Hill Practice, and here she explains what sets them apart from the rest

Q What is on o er at Forest Hill Practice?

A We are a multidisciplinary clinic o ering podiatry and sports podiatry also available is physiotherapy, counselling and massage. For podiatry, we provide assessments, diagnosis, management, and treatment for various foot problems, which can be sport related injuries or those related to medical conditions like diabetes, arthritis,

Q Do you feel you do something di erently compared to other similar businesses?

A We believe we do things di erently from many other practices and what sets us apart is the long≠term relationships we build with our patients, many of whom have been with us for over 20 years. That kind of loyalty comes from doing more than just o ering appointments, it reflects the

consistent, personalized care and trust we provide, and the time we take to really get to know our patients and their needs. We can combine podiatry and physiotherapy to get the best care and outcome for patients. We also have a patient focused approach: we donít just treat symptoms, we educate, prevent and support overall foot health for the long term. We stay up to date with modern techniques and treatments (gait analysis, laser, shockwave), but we always deliver them with a personal touch. That balance of traditional values and current clinical practice sets us apart.

Q Looking at sports therapy, what kind of treatments do you o er?

A Both myself and Oliver Taylor, one of the

expert team here, provide in depth biomechanical assessments, MSK evaluations and advanced gait analysis. This allows us to diagnose underlying issues more accurately and create tailored treatment plans, whether itís for injury prevention, rehabilitation or performance improvement. Whether youíre a serious athlete or not, we tailor our approach to your specific needs, helping you move better, recover faster and prevent future problems.

Q How do you look to treat the cause?

A It starts with a comprehensive assessment not just looking at the foot in isolation, but an evaluation of how the entire body moves. This includes biomechanical analysis, gait assessments, muscle strength testing and lifestyle factors. We look at how you walk, run, stand and how your posture or activity level may be contributing to the problem. From there we address the root cause, not just the symptoms, and then prescribe treatments and a treatment plan such as rehabilitation exercises, orthotics, footwear advice and referral to other professionals if needed.

Q What do you love about Tarporley?

A Tarporley is a fantastic place to run a business, it has a strong sense of community. It is a beautiful place to work with a mix of rural charm and a vibrant high street. We see everyone from young families to active retirees, and we love being able to support their health and mobility in such a friendly familiar setting. There is a real pride in the village and being part of that as a trusted healthcare provider is something I am genuinely proud of.

FEELGOOD FACTOR

Helping cancer survivors love the skin theyíre in again

When I first opened SKIN Aesthetics in 2021, my mission wasnít just about helping people look good it was about helping them feel good. After more than a decade working as a registered nurse and subsequently a nurse prescriber with a background in anaesthetics, Iíve seen first≠hand how our skin can a ect our confidence and sense of self. For cancer survivors in particular, the emotional and physical impact of scarring can last long after treatment has finished. Thatís why my clinic, SKIN Aesthetics in Wrexham, North Wales, now proudly o ers free scar≠revision treatments to

anyone who has undergone cancer treatment no matter how long ago. Patients hear about us through word of mouth, charities and health professionals. Some come with scarring on the chest after surgery, others with facial scars or changes that remind them daily of what theyíve been through. These services are completely free of charge because I believe aesthetics should be about restoring confidence and dignity, not just appearances. Every personís story and every scar is di erent, so treatment plans are tailored individually. We might use a combination of advanced skin therapies such as medical microneedling, gentle chemical peels or polynucleotides. While the techniques sound technical, the aim is simple: to soften scar tissue, reduce discomfort and help people

feel like themselves again. The results can be life≠changing not just in the mirror but in how someone carries themselves, applies for a job, or even feels walking into a room. I trained in anaesthetics, have over ten years of aesthetic experience and Iím a proud member of the ACE Group, an international network that sets the gold standard for safe, ethical aesthetics. But what matters most is making sure anyone who has survived cancer feels welcome and supported without fear of cost or stigma.

As part of our ongoing commitment to community care, I want to grow this service so even more people across North Wales and Cheshire can benefit. If you or someone you love has scarring following cancer treatment and wants to explore whatís possible, you donít need a GP referral; simply contact the clinic to arrange a free, confidential consultation.

Helping people feel comfortable in their skin again is the most rewarding work I do. Itís proof that aesthetics, at its best, is about so much more than beauty, itís about healing, hope and moving forward.

Alongside our scar revision treatments, SKIN Aesthetics o ers a wide range of regenerative aesthetics and skin treatments, as well as teen skin educational workshops to debunk the myths that platforms like TikTok often spread. With over 1,500 patients, 600+ five≠star reviews, and full HIW registration, the clinic delivers safe, ethical, and results≠driven treatments, and my team and I are delighted that we have become firmly established within Wrexham and the surrounding community.

Personal support

Absolutely meets Lucy Deighton, Operations Manager for Live-in Care at Alcedo Care , on the bene fits of their service

Q Why is choosing a regulated care provider so important when it comes to live≠in care?

A Choosing a regulated care provider is important because they o!er a safety net and take on all administrative burdens. With unregulated care, families must act as employers, handling payroll, taxes, insurance, holidays and performance management. The most concerning risks include the limited services an unregulated carer can provide they cannot assist with personal or medical care. Thereís also a lack of oversight, with no legal recourse if something goes wrong, no regular inspections, and no safeguarding measures.

Q What are the key benefits of having a live≠in carer?

A The benefits of live≠in care are numerous. One of the primary advantages is the

provision of personalised, one≠to≠one care, tailored to the individualís specific needs. Unlike care homes, where sta! must divide their attention among multiple residents, a live≠in carer focuses solely on the individual, or couple, ensuring consistent and dedicated support. Live≠in care enables independence and autonomy the client can keep their usual routines, hobbies, mealtimes and even pets! Alcedoís live≠in care is flexible and can adapt as the clientís needs change.

Q How does Alcedo Care ensure that its live≠in carers are matched to clients correctly?

A We take great care in matching carers to clients, based on skills, experience and personality. Compatibility is key to building trust and a positive relationship. We want our carers to form lasting bonds with

their clients, so we will make a selection of carers for each client, with a detailed profile and a photo. The client can meet with the carers before they start, a bit like an interview and they can choose the carer they feel is right for them.

Q For families in Cheshire, what makes live≠in care a particularly suitable option?

A Live≠in care is the perfect choice for anyone who needs ongoing support, but wants to avoid the disruption of moving into residential care. Itís ideal for people with dementia or Alzheimerís, those with complex clinical needs, learning disabilities, mobility issues, and itís also great for couples.

All our carers are directly employed by us, and we handle recruitment, training, and ongoing management. Alcedo Care is fully responsible for all aspects of care and service, giving clients peace of mind. Clients and their families also have access to our online electronic care planning system. This allows real≠time updates and seamless communication about the care being provided.

Alcedo Care o!ers fully regulated live≠in care throughout England and Wales so no matter where you are, you can access high≠quality, personalised care around the clock, in the place you love home.

Q What kind of training, support, and regulation do Alcedo Care live≠in carers receive?

A Alcedo Care live≠in carers receive thorough vetting and training, and the company has won a Princess Royal Training award for its complex training programs. They receive regular training and support, and care plans are reviewed regularly to adapt to changing needs. The company and its services are regulated by the CQC in England and the CIW in Wales, ensuring adherence to strict quality and safety standards.

BOLD & BEAUTIFUL

The Regional Shortlist for the BIID Interior Design Awards 2025 have been announced, including this stunning home in Manchester

Abold and curated transformation of a 3-bed terraced house in Manchester into an 8-bed HMO (house in multiple occupation) has caught the eye of the judges of the BIID Interior Design Awards. Created by Mardesignuk, it blends hotel-inspired design with long-term functionality to deliver high-performing, designled accommodation tailored to the lifestyle needs of todayís professional tenants. The design practice takes Absolutely a creative journey.

Q What was the clientís brief?

A The clientís key priorities included maximising space efficiency without compromising comfort, ensuring each bedroom had an ensuite or off-suite, providing ample storage, and inviting communal areas. The design requirements and vision centred on creating a bold, vibrant, hotel-inspired design with a Soho House vibe, sophisticated, artsy, and unique. Every detail, from space planning to styling, needed to support a high-end tenant experience that would attract professionals and secure premium rental income.

Q How does the design solution you came up with meet the needs of the users of the space?

A As an HMO, the space was designed to support multiple tenants with both individual and shared needs. Each of the eight bedrooms includes storage and either an en-suite or offsuite bathroom, offering privacy, comfort, and

a distinct identity. The curated mix of bold colours and calming neutrals creates a balanced, personal environment. Shared kitchen and communal areas were carefully planned to foster interaction while remaining highly functional and easy to maintain. Durable, low-maintenance finishes and layout ensure the property remains adaptable to tenant turnover, evolving needs, and long-term usability, creating a vibrant, welcoming ìhome outside of homeî.

Q What do you consider the most successful creative, innovative or problemsolving design solution you delivered on this project?

A The most successful design solution was creating seven en-suite rooms and one off-suite within the footprint of a 3-bed terraced house. Achieved through a loft conversion and strategic planning, the design maximised comfort, privacy, and usability without compromising flow or quality, all within a constrained budget. The layout maintains generous circulation, natural light, and well-defined zones. Paired with curated artwork, bold colours, and bespoke detailing, the scheme blends the challenge of spatial optimisation with creative expression. It reimagines HMO living as a boutique experience, setting a new standard for cost-effective, highimpact design in shared accommodation.

Q What was the biggest challenge you faced in the design or implementation of your design?

A The biggest challenge was working within the tight spatial constraints of a 3-bed terraced house.

ìThe mix of bold colours and calming neutrals creates a balanced, personal environmentî

Balancing space efficiency with tenant comfort required strategic planning and creative thinking, particularly to integrate a loft conversion without disrupting the property©s flow. Working within a modest budget meant every design decision had to be both cost-conscious and impactful. The success lay in delivering a striking, highly functional home that feels spacious and premium. A key lesson learned: constraints can drive better creativity when functionality, efficiency, and design are considered from the outset.

Q How is the project sustainable, beyond the specification of materials or furniture, fixtures and equipment (FF&E)?

A The project aimed to halve energy consumption and carbon emissions compared to mainstream developments. Heat loss was minimised through full insulation, upgraded double-glazed windows, and sealing drafts. Room-by-room heat loss calculations informed radiator sizing and the use of a modulating Intergas boiler with weather compensation and individual thermostats. A

ìConstraints can drive better creativity when design is considered from the outsetî

PDHW system enabled efficient heating and rapid hot water recovery at lower temperatures. A secondary hot water loop provided instant hot water to all outlets, reducing waste. Together, these strategies delivered a low-energy, highperformance property and established a new benchmark for sustainable, design-led HMO development.

Q In which way(s) did the project consider social sustainability and wellbeing?

A The project was grounded in the belief that everyone deserves a space they can proudly call home, an ethos that drove both the design and layout decisions. By creating a high-quality, design-led shared living environment, the project actively promotes social sustainability and tenant wellbeing.

Each of the eight bedrooms was designed to offer comfort, privacy, and a strong sense of personal space. Calming neutrals paired with energising accent colours support mental wellbeing, while curated artwork and styling contribute to a sense of identity and belonging.

Shared areas were intentionally planned to encourage social interaction while maintaining clear boundaries between communal and private zones. Natural light, strategic layouts, and quality materials contribute to a welcoming and uplifting atmosphere, encouraging tenants to feel valued and at home.

TOUCH luxurious

Cheshireís

Kunal Trehan has been behind some of the globeís most eye-catching designs. Here, he discusses inspirations, dreams and the next steps

Visiting Kunal Trehanís Cheshire home truly is like stepping into the designerís creative mind. ìMy home is a reflection of everything I love about design,î he says, inviting us in. ìI call it organic luxury. Here, youíll find marble, natural stone, natural fibres and rich walnut. Timeless, tactile materials that add warmth and sophistication. Each room tells its own story and has its own atmosphere, but thereís a strong sense of flow and cohesion throughout. I didnít want a home that felt like a showroom, I wanted something inviting, calm and considered. A place to slow down, recharge and just be.î

Itís little surprise that he needs that escape judging by how busy he is. For over 16 years, he has been behind some of the most awe-inspiring highend properties through his Touched Interiors design practice. ìMy style has naturally evolved as Iíve grown as a designer and what began as something far more glamorous has matured into what I now call organic quiet luxury,î he says on how he has changed over the years. ìIím drawn to natural materials

like marble, walnut, stone, and wool; elements that have an innate richness and authenticity. I love crafting spaces that feel both elevated and effortless. Thereís a refined calm to quiet luxury and it whispers rather than shouts. Itís timeless, soulful, and deeply personal.î

Discussing luxury in design, we are keen to find out how Kunal balances it with both individuality and functionality. ìIím a bespoke interior designer, meaning no two projects are ever the same,î he says on the former. ìEverything we create is custom-designed with the client in mind. Even if two different homes happen to feature the same piece of furniture, the materials, upholstery, finish, and context will always be tailored to the individual, so much so that the pieces are unique. Our clientsí lifestyles, personalities, and aspirations are embedded into every design decision.

ìLuxury must serve real life, otherwise, itís just for show,î he adds on functionality. ìI make sure our designs donít just look timeless, but live beautifully too. That means selecting finishes and fabrics that can withstand the realities of daily life, whether thatís pets, children, or entertaining. I know my materials inside out, and I rigorously

test everything before recommending it. For me, itís about beauty that endures, not just impresses. And even after all that, I still find myself gently reminding clients to use and enjoy their home, not to tiptoe around it. Itís there to be lived in, not preserved, and I have built it to last.î

Whatís very apparent is how key collaboration is to Kunal. ìI absolutely love it,î he says on working with clients. ìMy job is to make someone elseís vision not only look beautiful, but reach a level they didnít think was possible. Clients come to me with ideas and I see that as the starting point. Thankfully, they trust me, and they know Iím not a ëyes maní. I care deeply about the outcome. When clients respect that and weíre working in sync, the collaboration becomes truly special and every detail is elevated.î

Despite some of the stunning homes he has been involved with, is there still a dream client or project? ìI always say that everyone has a budget, even the billionaires, and Iíve worked with a few!î he laughs. ìBut my ultimate project? One with a truly limitless budget. Not for excess, but for creative freedom, to explore rare materials, pioneering techniques, and architectural storytelling without compromise.î

Despite the success of Touched Interiors, Kunal isnít resting on his laurels. ìThereís a lot in motion right now and itís all incredibly exciting,î he says of the future. ìIíve recently launched my first eponymous brand Kunal TrehanÆ Casa Maison Home

with the debut collection featuring a curated range of luxury canvas artworks handmade in Spain. The furniture line will follow later this year. While Touched Interiors has been a respected name in high-end interiors for over 16 years, it felt like the right time to create something entirely under my own name, a design brand that captures more of my personal aesthetic, creative journey, and, importantly, remains accessible. The brandís ethos is simple: ëDesignerís Finish. Editorial Touch. Surprisingly Attainableí.

ìNext year, Iíll also be releasing my first book, The Design Game, a mix of memoir and masterclass for aspiring

and established designers who want to elevate their craft and navigate the business of design,î he adds. ìBeyond that, Iíve got some truly extraordinary projects in the pipeline, homes that allow me to push boundaries and keep growing creatively. Iím just getting started.î

Itís a busy world for Kunal Trehan, but we end up coming full circle as Absolutely decides we have taken up too much of his time already. ìHonestly, my favourite place to unwind is my own home.î he says about switching o! as we say our farewells. ìWeíre lucky to have beautiful grounds, and I really cherish the time I spend there.î

FINISH

Looking for some inspiration to transform tired interiors?
A Master the Art course could be just what you need

Master the Art The Roger Newton & Daughter School of Decorative Finishes hosts an array of creative courses from their studio just over the border in Shropshire. Initially focusing on the art of traditional gilding or paint finishes, the school now offers a growing roster of workshops preserving heritage crafts, which people fly in from all over the world to enjoy.

Founded in 2021 by Roger Newton, one of the few remaining master guilders in the country, and his daughter Kate Elwell, the studio started out concentrating on intensive three-day courses teaching the art of traditional water gilding, where students learn how to prepare gesso and lay and burnish gold leaf as well as decorative oil gilding. They also specialise in three-day paint finish courses, guiding students through the incredible process of replicating marble, malachite, tortoiseshell, wood graining and porphyry by using oil paints on any wooden surface.

Absolutely visited to sit down Kate and find out about the unique family business and how their expertise can help you transform your home.

Q Was yours a creative upbringing?

A I started early, helping my father with paint effects as soon as I could hold a paintbrush. I used to spend hours in his studio practising painting freehand

KATEOVERSEEINGAWORKSHOP

straight lines on furniture. At university, I would buy IKEA furniture and then spend hours painting it for my room.

Q Were you aware of what your father did from an early age?

A Yes, I always loved watching him work in his studio, from as long ago as I can remember. He always had tiny speckles of paint on his hands, which still makes me smile. Once he gilded my finger nails and then told me they took two hours to dry. They actually dry immediately, but he needed me to sit still while he worked!

Q Before Master The Art became a solid idea, what was your working background?

A After graduating from the university of Edinburgh (where I did a masterís in history) my career took me to the City where I practised financial PR for some of the top FTSE 100. I then worked in the Private O!ce of the Sultan of Oman for 11 years, which was fascinating. However, in my downtime, I always retreated to my fatherís studio to unwind.

Q Where did the original idea for Master The Art come from? What imspired it?

A It had always been a dream of my father and I, which wasnít possible until my husband, two children and I left London. I was so lucky that my parents moved with us to Shropshire, and finally my father and I had the space and time to make this dream a reality.

Q It launched in 2021, so did Covid play a role?

A In 2020, just before Covid, my family and I gave up London life to move to a beautiful Georgian house in Shropshire, where we then put lockdown to good use converting an outbuilding into a studio. Luckily my husband is a plumber, which came in extremely useful! My job working for the Sultan also came to a natural conclusion at this time so the stars aligned. So yes, Covid did play a role as it gave us time to be together, creating the studio and building a website/brand which would have been harder to find the time to do otherwise.

Q What did you offer early on?

A The studio started out concentrating on intensive three-day courses teaching the art of traditional water gilding by my father, where students learn how to prepare gesso and lay and burnish gold leaf as well as decorative oil gilding. Then I taught three-day paint finish courses, guiding students through the process of replicating marble, malachite, tortoiseshell, wood graining and porphyry by using oil paints on any wooden surface.

Q What was the response like?

A We were so lucky with the support we received right from the beginning. There arenít many master gilders who teach, so my father has always been sought after.

Q How have you evolved since then?

A We soon realised we couldnít really do more than one of our courses a month, so I investigated crafts I wanted to learn.

we host now leaves a washbag and a bottle of Baileys here! I really mean it when I say that lots of our ëstudentsí are now true friends, something I donít take lightly and feel so lucky. I treasure the thank you notes I get afterwards.

Q Would you say you offer plenty of inspiration and advice for people looking to update their own homes?

A Without question. What we o!er, as well as a creative escape, is a wonderful chance to upcycle, whatever your budget. If you find something, such as a boring wooden lamp, in a charity shop you can elevate it to the amazing with simple brush strokes learned on our paint finishes workshop or a tired lampshade revamped after our painted lampshade workshop. The possibilities are endless!

Q How would you describe your own design style at home?

A I have to confess to being a maximalist and lover of colour and pattern. I love mixing old with new and updating tired objects elevating the mundane to the magnificent. Luckily, my youngest son now loves hanging out in the studio with me too. Consequently, his bedroom is full of painted furniture as well!

We have teachers coming from all over the country to join the Master The Art family. I feel so honoured that the best in their field come and join us. We now have a packed schedule of experts teaching one-day or two-day workshops. We have so far hosted workshops teaching modern decoupage, oil painting flowers, marbled paper, paper flowers dipped in wax, block printing, lampshade making, botanical art with metal, willow weaving, hand painting lampshades, chair caning, Christmas wreath making, planting a bulb lasagne and lino printing. The range is ever evolving and expanding.

Q Have you built up a little community?

A Yes, itís really lovely, we have a number of students who keep coming back to learn new crafts, and a very supportive community around us, as well as others coming from far afield. One lady who comes from Devon for every workshop

Q What are your ambitions for Master The Art?

A I would adore taking my fatherís workshops online in the near future. He is 87 now and may want to retire at some stage, so that would be a wonderful way of making sure his knowledge is still passed on. I am also expanding the homewares I paint and sell, constantly coming up with new designs and ideas. All our ëblanksí are made by a fabulous Princes Trust mental health charity, each one is painstakingly painted by hand by me for something you can really treasure. I am definitely going to expand on this, some pieces are already on our website, and I am doing lots of Christmas fairs this year to showcase the beautiful wall sconces, waste paper bins and tissue boxes I am already designing and painting. Watch this space!

CHATTELS Designer

Furniture in Chester is celebrating 30 years working with some of the worldís most iconic furniture designs

Walking into CHATTELS you wouldnít realise that they are 30 years old: with their ever-evolving showroom in City Road in Chester, thereís always something new to behold.

Thirty years ago, Peter Gri!th, who had been working as a commercial agent specialising in European contemporary furniture, saw a gap in the market and decided to step away from a life on the road and open Chesterís only contemporary design furniture showroom in Steam Mill Street. Itís a decision he never regretted and what a legacy he has left!

In 1999 his son, Paul, joined the business with a lighting shop on Boughton High Street, and six years later they combined and moved to a much larger showroom at their current location on City Road. To this day it remains a true family business with Peterís daughter, and Paulís twin sister, Sonia joining the team nine years ago.

CHATTELS was built on strong foundations with an emphasis on quality, design and old school customer service which remains their priority today. ìMy fatherís timing was excellent,î says Paul, ìand with his vast knowledge of the history behind many of the iconic pieces, he could lament for hours about the skill and craftsmanship behind each piece. He had an eye for detail, and would happily share his knowledge with all who would listen.î

CHATTELS source beautiful pieces from Europeís most sought-after brand names. ìFor designer furniture to succeed it needs to have a timelessness about it that enables it to work in any setting,î Paul says. ìMany of the brands we work with have been manufacturing the same designs, by customer demand, for decades and many of the new designs introduced have to have the same

SONIA

balance of contemporary, classic and futuristic qualities. Take French brand Ligne Rosetís Togo, for example. It was designed in 1973, but itís still so relevant today, iconic in its own right.î

Itís the timelessness of these pieces that have assured their longevity, and that of CHATTELS. ìInvesting in iconic design also means you are investing in quality pieces that will last a lifetime or longer. We are descending into a throw away culture, from fast fashion to fast furniture. You may have just finished paying for it when you need to replace it. This is never the case with our brands,î says Sonia.

Paul and Sonia run a business that has far more complexity than simply the sale of beautiful furniture. ìWe have survived, indeed thrived, for 30 years because we have never stood still,î says Paul. ìAs well as retailing beautiful furniture, we also offer a full interior design service for domestic and commercial properties. This grew really from customer demand. We have clients who have worked with us for decades, have moved house or are updating their existing home and know that we will offer them the support and quality advice to

make the right decisions for them. Our design service ranges from helping to plan and install bespoke wardrobe systems from brands such as Pianca or Lema to furnishing entire homes. We work with architects and designers as well as direct with homeowners, and are able to bring together real experts for aspects such as lighting and soft furnishings to ensure that we can offer a full turn-key solution. Last November we added a further 350 square metres to our showroom space, making us one of the largest contemporary furniture showrooms in the north.î

As CHATTELS celebrates this 30year milestone, the team remains as passionate as ever still evolving, still curious, and still championing quality design with the same family-run values that started it all.

Whether youíre after a single statement piece or full interior support, their mission is simple: to help every client create a home thatís not just beautiful, but truly their own.

Time to recharge

The experts at Pooky on a key trend in lighting that will help illuminate your home this autumn

ìWe all want that extra sense of warmth and atmosphere at home

Rechargeable lighting has soared in popularity over the last couple of years, and itís easy to see why.

For too long, lighting was something that sat politely around the edges of a room or dangled from a fixed ceiling point. Rechargeable lighting breaks that mould. It gives you the freedom to place light exactly where you want it, without sockets, wiring, or calling in an electrician.

For us, it all started with the Phileas, designed by Matthew Williamson the lamp that launched the cordless movement. It proved that beautiful, wireless lighting doesnít have to be clunky or costly; it just needs to be well-designed and sensibly priced.

And the joy of rechargeable lighting is in the possibilities. Imagine a lamp casting a warm glow across the centre of your dining table, a little sparkle tucked between books on a shelf, a cosy reading corner lifted out of the shadows, or even a candlelike glow keeping you company in the bath. Our collection is designed to do exactly that delivering atmosphere wherever you need it. And itís not just lamps anymore. From pendants and picture lights to wall lamps, you can now enjoy truly beautiful lighting without the upheaval or cost of retrofitting traditional wired fittings.

The designs themselves have come a long way too. Gone are the bulky bases and awkward battery packs youíd rather hide. With no cords or clutter, we can now celebrate the joy of the materials themselves: colourful resins, translucent glass, delicate metals. The result is lighting that feels every bit as sophisticated as its hardwired cousins. Even the simplest

reading nook is transformed by the magic of ìno wires, no messî!

Today, our collection includes more than 160 rechargeable designs, each one created to be just as beautiful as our corded range. Powered either by integrated LED or our clever Genesis rechargeable cell, a single charge gives you up to 15 hours of light. Thatís enough to see you through countless chapters, a couple of dinners, and even an autumn evening or two outdoors.

Rechargeables are also a dream for renters or anyone living in period properties, where drilling holes or rewiring isnít always an option. And the flexibility is unbeatable: you can move them from room to room as the mood takes you, or carry them out into the garden to extend summer evenings. Itís stylish, practical lighting that moves with you.

And with autumn upon us, they feel especially timely. As the nights draw in, we all want that extra sense of warmth and atmosphere at home. A soft pool of light on a side table makes evenings instantly more inviting, while a glow across a man-

telpiece or bookshelf brings depth and drama to darker corners. For entertaining, rechargeable table lamps make a chic alternative to candles, casting flattering light across the table, without the smoke or wax. And when Halloween parties or early festive gatherings roll around, these portable beauties transition seamlessly outdoors, lighting patios, paths, and porches with a welcoming glow.

Every one of our rechargeables comes with a remote control, giving you dimmable settings and timer options at the touch of a button. So whether you want to soften the atmosphere for an intimate dinner or wind the lights down gently at bedtime, youíre in complete control. And if, like us, you never want to be without your favourite glow, weíd suggest keeping an extra Genesis cell to hand. Having a spare fully charged and ready to swap in means your light is always there when you need it. Itís the easiest way to guarantee uninterrupted style, comfort, and atmosphere.

ìAllow for happy accidents and diversions. Pockets of creative flair can be found following your gut feelingî

MEET THE EXPERT

Absolutely chats to Cheshire-based interior designer, Hannah Barnes

Q How would you describe your own personal design style at home?

A I like to fuse together timeless design with more eclectic styling to achieve a lived-in, relaxed and personal home for my family. I©m currently renovating my own home and I©m trying to retain the essence of its era, whilst putting my own stamp on it and making it work for everyday family life.

There is both freedom and pressure when designing just for your own taste, ensuring the design choices I make are both practical and personal. I think we all have the same desperate desire to hide the messy shoes and endless chargers in a stylish way.

Q How do you look to incorporate your own design ideas with a client's idea about how their home should look?

A It often depends on the client. Some really don©t know where to start, but they know something about their space that just isn©t working for them. Then there are clients who are actually pretty clear about what they want or don©t want, but lack the confidence or experience to bring it to life.

My role is to get to know their lifestyle and predict what they need, building on what they already have. Then, show them the potential of how their space can look and function, whilst fusing their own taste and personal style so the finished interior is a reflection of the client, not necessarily of me.

Q What advice would you give anyone looking to revamp their home design?

A Ideally, start with honing down on the look and feel you like. This may be

things like gathering inspiration from magazines, TV, social media or the internet, but then editing the initial ideas into something more specific. It takes time, but having a clear focus will help keep a design project heading in the right direction. Having said all that, allow for happy accidents and diversions too often pockets of creative flair can be found in last minute decisions made with your gut feeling.

Q Do you have a dream project you'd like to undertake?

A I love period buildings and a dream would be to redesign a hotel which fuses my love of historic architecture with new design ideas to create something really unique. There is something really special about designing a space which has to wow people from many walks of life, but then needs to feel homely and welcoming too. I think that would be a really interesting challenge, which would be a natural evolution from all my years of designing residential homes.

HIGH CLIMBING

Sam Lomax, Director of The Stair Shop, on how the business has stayed ahead of the rest

Q What originally inspired Paul and Mike to start The Stair Shop in 2000?

A It was a love of staircases and the only real big joinery item that hasnít converted to other materials, ie plastics.

Q How has the company evolved?

A Starting back in 2000 we only had 3 employees now we have just over 20.

Q What principles have guided The Stair Shopís success over the years?

A Customer satisfaction is our number one aim and I think this is where we stand out in the industry

Q Can you tell us more about the team at The Stair Shop?

A We have a good mixture of staff both young and old, each having a specific role where they excel in their field.

Q What makes The Stair Shop stand out in the bespoke staircase industry?

A Our extensive knowledge and years of experience concentrating on just staircase manufacturing has made us what we are today.

Q How does upgrading equipment help maintain your competitive edge?

A Although we do upgrade our equipment regularly, we still look after and treasure some of our old equipment. There is a saw in our workshop that Paul bought back in 1974 that runs better than some of our newer additions!

Q What types of bespoke staircase projects are most popular with your customers?

A Iíd say our Spine Staircase with the glass balustrade is our most popular.

Q How important is the spraying and prefinishing facility to the quality of your staircases?

A Having this as an in house facility not only guarantees the best finishes, it also allows our customers to custom pick colours and finishes.

Q What challenges has the business overcome during its 25-year journey?

A We havenít really faced any major challenges, the biggest burden like a lot of other companies was COVID. We had to shut the workshop down and run the o!ce side of things from home. For Mike especially this was a frustrating and boring time as he is a very hands on person.

Q Looking ahead, what are your goals and vision for the future of The Stair Shop?

A To carry on doing what we do best and keep our customers old and new happy and satisfied.

Why Year 3 is the perfect time to join a Prep School: The Grange School example

For many families, the decision of when to move their child to a prep school is as important as the choice of school itself. While some wait until the later junior years, Year 3 is widely recognised as the ideal entry point. At this age, children are eager for new challenges, socially adaptable, and ready to build strong academic foundations.

The Grange School in Hartford shows this to great efect. Known for its nurturing ethos and ambition, it demonstrates why starting in Year 3 gives children the best chance to thrive.

SETTLINGINEARLY

Children who join in Year 3 settle very quickly, sometimes more so than those who wait until Years 5 or 6. At this stage, pupils are open, adaptable, and eager to make new friends. Pastoral care can focus on building confi dence and resilience early on. At The Grange, smaller class sizes and dedicated staf ensure every child feels seen and supported. Families often remark how quickly their children ìfi nd their feetî.

Year 3 is a golden window. Children are old enough to embrace specialist teaching and the wide opportunities available, but young enough to benefi t from strong pastoral foundations.

By the time they reach the top of the Junior School, they are thriving academically, socially, and personally.

AVOIDINGTHE RUSH

By the later years of prep, many schools have full classes, making entry highly competitive. Families who wait can face disappointment if places simply arenít there.

The Grange provides a clear example: by Years 5 and 6, demand for places is high and spaces are frequently full. By joining at Year 3, children not only secure their place but are also expected to progress seamlessly through to the Senior School without the need for an entrance assessment.

ìWe knew we wanted our daughter at The Grange Senior School, but places are competitive,î says one parent.

ìJoining the Junior School in Year 3 gave us peace of mind sheís settled, happy, and we donít have to worry about exams or limited availability later.î

SPECIALISTTEACHING ANDFACILITIES

Year 3 is when children are ready to benefi t from specialist teaching in subjects such as science, music, drama, and sport. Purpose≠built facilities bring lessons to

life, encouraging curiosity and creativity.

At The Grange, pupils in Year 3 can step into fully equipped laboratories, art studios, design and technology labs, immersive classrooms and performance spaces.

As one Junior School teacher notes: ìChildren who join us at Year 3 light up when they step into the science labs or the music rooms for the rst time. They realise learning is about discovery, not just textbooks and that excitement stays with them.î

TAILOREDTEACHING

Individual attention makes a huge diference at this stage of learning. Smaller classes allow teachers to stretch more able pupils and support those who need extra help.

The Grange demonstrates this well: teachers really get to know each child.

Pupils feel confi dent putting up their hands, asking questions, and exploring ideas vital habits that carry them forward into senior education.

ENRICHMENTAND EXPLORATION

Joining earlier also gives children more time to take advantage of enrichment opportunities. Whether sport, music, debating, coding, or outdoor pursuits, the breadth of activities at prep schools helps children discover passions they may never have known otherwise.

At The Grange, over 40 enrichment clubs are on ofer. Parents frequently say how surprised they are at the skills their children develop from learning a new instrument to acting on stage.

ìOur son discovered a love for drama through an after≠school club at The Grange,î says another proud parent. ìItís given him so much confi dence, and itís something we may never have seen if he hadnít joined in Year 3.î

A SEAMLESSJOURNEY

Children who join in Year 3 enjoy a smoother progression into senior education, without the disruption of entrance exams or last≠minute applications.

The Grange illustrates this point clearly. Pupils progress naturally into its Senior School without additional assessments, already confi dent in their surroundings and supported by teachers who know them well.

Beyond academics, prep schools place strong emphasis on character development. Year 3 is the perfect moment to instil independence, resilience, and respect qualities that shape children far beyond the classroom.

At The Grange, these values are embedded in daily life. Pupils are encouraged to try, fail, and try again learning that confi dence comes from perseverance.

DON'TLEAVEIT TOO LATE

The message for families is clear: waiting until the later years can mean missed opportunities and increased competition for places. By joining at Year 3, children benefi t from a nurturing start, specialist teaching and a seamless journey into Senior School.

Admissions Manager, Laura Hough, sums it up: ìEvery year we see families waiting until Year 5 or 6 to apply, only to nd those places are full. By joining at Year 3, parents secure their childís future at The Grange, giving them the time and space to thrive.î

As The Grange School shows, securing a place early ensures children have the time, space, and support to ourish. For parents weighing up their options, Year 3 isnít just a good entry point itís the best one. Youíre welcome to visit the Grange School any time and nd out what sets independent education apart.

Hilbre Island

A world-first cultural and ecological centre, hidden in plain sight

In an era of heightened environmental and cultural awareness, a new beacon of possibility is quietly emerging o the Wirral coast. Introducing The CASS Centre for Art, Science & Sustainability, an ambitious and visionary initiative by the British Art and Design Association (BADA), rooted on the remote and windswept Hilbre Island. Once a monastic retreat and later an invaluable cog in Britainís maritime and military history, Hilbre has long been a place of solitude, resilience, and quiet mystique. For centuries, it served many roles: from a key link in one of the worldís earliest telegraph networks relaying messages from Holyhead to Liverpool, to a wartime decoy site lit to mislead German bombers. Prince Philip, a keen birdwatcher, once photographed the islandís migrating species. The Seagull pub, long vanished, once poured pints for sailors sheltering from gales. And until the early 2000s, the islandís last warden lived modestly with his family, raising goats and chickens in near self≠su ciency.

But for nearly two decades Hilbre remained in quiet stasis, its heritage structures weathering the wind under a policy of ìmanaged declineî. Until 2020. That year, during the solitude of the first national lockdown, internationally recognised artist Terry Du y also Chair of BADA walked out to Hilbre with sketchbook in hand and his dog, Reggie, in tow. A playful trespass beyond the ìKeep Outî signs revealed a hidden world: semi≠derelict 19th≠century buildings with intact roofs and historic character untouched. For someone who had helped shape artist studio developments in Liverpool, London, and Newcastle, the vision was immediate and clear.

In collaboration with architect Dominic Wilkinson, Creative Director of BADA, the two gradually developed the idea for the project and the possibility of making the centre accessible for academics and students from local universities. The concept of a sustainable future for the island also evolved and developed into a vision in which such research could be funded and encouraged and contribute to our greater understanding and knowledge of climate change.

Working with other local charities, The Friends of Hilbre and Hilbre Bird Observatory a Community Land Trust was established to oversee the sensitive restoration and careful reuse of the seven heritage structures, including the grade II≠ listed Telegarph Station and Buoy Masters house, workshop and store three of which will become the beating heart of The CASS. The result will be a centre as sensitive as it is radical: creating a place that is both rooted in its heritage and built for the future.
