Jennifer Delgado opens this issue by fully embracing the Christmas spirit

Ah, December – the month when our streets twinkle a little brighter, our mugs stay filled with something warm, and the countdown to Christmas becomes delightfully unavoidable. This year, I feel I have o cially embraced the festive spirit earlier than normal.

For me, this month is all about slowing down. Yes, I know the calendars are bursting and the to-do lists are longer than our arms, but it’s also about savouring those little moments that make the festive period so special. Whether it’s wrapping the perfect present (without accidentally taping your fingers together), stu ng yourself with mince pies, or drinking too much fizz at the o ce christmas party, these are the moments we remember (or don’t depending on how much you have).

As we look ahead to the new year, I hope this issue reminds you to embrace both the sparkle and the simple joys: a quiet evening by the fire, a frosty walk or the Stranger Things final series coming to a close. The holidays are a chance to hit pause, to connect, and to make memories that will warm us long after the decorations come down. And if you’re anything like my mum, those decorations don’t come down for a long time!

There’s plenty more on my Christmas wishlist. From indulgent cocktails to sharing a few small plates, a night out in Chester is the perfect way to mark the season with friends, laughter, and maybe a little sparkle. There’s also nothing quite like the thrill of live theatre in December – the energy, the talent, the way it sweeps you up in a story that feels both timeless and celebratory. It’s the perfect reminder to enjoy a little magic wherever you can find it.

And some traditions aren’t traditional at all (see the box out) – but they’re ours, and they make the season feel a little more magical. Enjoy your cosy Christmas, and we’ll see you in 2026!

This month

I will be...

WHAT I’M EATING: It wouldn’t be Christmas without a festive night out at Barlounge.

WHAT I’M SEEING: Matilda The Musical at Liverpool Empire.

WHERE I’M GOING: Nowhere other than my couch watching the Stranger Things final series if I can help it! Not typically festive, but if you’re a superfan like us, you’ll understand the temptation to curl up and binge-watch.

VILLAIN OF THE PIECE

Warrington’s Kym Marsh is soon to head out on tour in Single White Femaleand she tells Absolutely how much she is relishing playing an iconic baddie

“This is my villain era,” says Kym Marsh, with a laugh so warm it is hard to imagine the multi-talented actress with her friendly, likeable persona, being remotely villainous. Yet, in her latest role as Hedy, in the world premiere stage adaptation of the iconic 90s’ psychological thriller, Single White Female, audiences are in for a surprise.

The play is about to begin a six-month tour of the UK, taking in 21 venues across the country. It tells the story of recently divorced mum Allie, who is trying to juggle childcare with starting a new business. When she advertises for a lodger to help make ends meet, along comes the seemingly delightful Hedy – but quickly we see that all is not as it seems and their new friendship takes a sinister turn.

So, does portraying someone who appears lovely but might have a darker side come hard to Kym, who was one of the most popular characters, Michelle Connor, in Coronation Street for 13 years, has won a multitude of acting awards and, amongst other things, has starred to great acclaim in big TV hits Waterloo Road, Strictly Come Dancing and presented BBC One’s Morning Live? “Actually the

last few roles I have done have been pretty villainous and I love it,” she says.

“It’s so easy to play the typical moustache twiddler. But I want to make Hedy a little bit more layered and actually have people be a bit taken aback, unsure if she’s good or bad right up to the last minute and even feeling sorry for her, particularly near the end. So, it is a bit more complex and nuanced than you might imagine.”

How did she end up being asked to take on such an interesting and chilling role?

“After I played Alex Forrest in the stage version of Fatal Attraction, we started to have discussions about what potential other projects there might be and we came up with the idea of Single White Female because it had never been done before,” she explains. “It was also within that kind of genre of those epic, classic films that had a real impact on people at that time. So I have been attached to it from the start and it’s really exciting – the character of Hedy is so interesting and challenging to play. Without giving too much away to anyone who hasn’t seen the film, the character is very complex and, from an acting point of view, it gives me an opportunity to explore so many di erent places that you don’t necessarily really go to normally.”

The new stage version of Single White Female will appeal to a new generation who have never seen the movie, but it will also give a new perspective to fans of

the original film, as it has been updated by author, journalist and broadcaster, Rebecca Reid, with a focus on social media, playing on the themes of ambition, identity and isolation through that lens.

Kym says this has done more than just give it a contemporary spin, it actually makes the story feel even more relevant. “There obviously wasn’t social media back in the 90s,” she says. “But if you know the essence of the plot and what it’s about, it works very well because we see people trying to imitate people’s lives online all the time.

“We hear about these stories of people ‘catfishing’ and so on and I think there are elements of that within Single White Female that make it feel up to date and its themes are even more relevant today than they were then,” Kym adds. “I think the world of social media is a wonderful place, but it’s also to be handled with care, because there is always that element of danger about it. And when you have a character like Hedy, and then you put social media into her hands, it can be tricky to the point of dangerous.”

Will fans of the original still recognise the film they know and love – and will they be treated to the iconic stiletto moment? Kym laughs. “The essence is very much still the same. But the story is slightly changed – as well as being more up-to-date, it’s based in the UK rather than being in America. So there are di erences but the big, important, epic moments are still in there. And it’s

THE PLAY IS AN ADAPTATION OF THE 1992 FILM STARRING BRIDGET FONDA AND JENNIFER JASON LEIGH

very much still a thriller with a real shock factor – we want to have people on the edge of their seats. I think people will still very much love the story whether they’ve seen the film or not. As for the iconic stiletto moment… you’ll have to wait and see!”

Kym says that having been in several theatre productions recently, including Mike Leigh’s Abigail’s Party, it has given her a real love of the stage, while she continues to enjoy her television career. “I’m so lucky that I am able to enjoy both being in front of the camera and also being on stage,” she says. “Obviously on stage you get an instant kind of reaction which is very rewarding – you know immediately how much people are enjoying what you’re doing when you are on stage. Television can be very di erent from that. But there is a real buzz being on stage, you get that atmosphere straight away. And I really like travelling around, seeing di erent places and some beautiful theatres. It’s interesting that everywhere you go, the audience reacts di erently to di erent parts. Then again, in front of a camera you always get to go again!”

So even now, she gets nervous? “Of course I do,” she admits. “Theatre is way more nerve wracking, that’s for sure. My dad passed away last year and I have found myself standing in the wings before I go on stage saying, ‘Come on Dad, come

on Dad’. Because you want to feel that someone is helping you out when you are out there, you really hope that nothing’s going to go wrong, that you give a great performance and people enjoy it.”

Now aged 49, Kym has not stopped working since she auditioned for the TV show Popstars, 25 years ago, joining the band Hear’Say. She says she is grateful that she has such a warm reception from the British public. “I feel very fortunate and very lucky that I’ve been allowed to have the career that I’ve had and to have been received in the way that I have,” says the mother-of-three. “I think maybe it’s because I come across as a sincere individual.

I’ve never tried to hide anything. I make mistakes and hold my hands up and I think that gives me a girl next door feel – perhaps everyone knows someone a bit like me.

“I was brought up by a family who are very caring and open,” she adds. “My family means everything to me. I absolutely adore my kids and my grandchildren.

I think I try to only ever be caring and open, too, when I’m being interviewed or meeting new people, because, to be honest, I don’t know how to be anything else!”

There are many places on the Single White Female tour that Kym is excited to visit – particularly Brighton’s Theatre Royal, where the play opens in January and, as

she hails from the North West, Manchester, Liverpool and Blackpool venues will be special. But the very last night of the tour will be particularly memorable for her in more ways than one. “We will be in Malvern and it’s my 50th birthday,” she explains. “I am not sure exactly what we will be doing that night after the final show, but I do know Malvern won’t be quite as peaceful as it usually is!”

Single White Female is on at the Manchester Opera House from 10-14 February. For full tour details, visit swfonstage.com

SEASON GREETINGS

Amy Morris, co-founder of The Grotto in Manchester, writes about bringing festive joy to families, plus we round up ten more Christmas events in Cheshire spreading cheer

The original idea for The Grotto came about because I’d been running Pop Up Global, which focused on large scale luxury entertainment productions and programming around the world for retail, cruise and leisure venues. At the same time, The Grotto’s co-founder Robyn Isherwood, specialised in multi-million-pound parties, weddings, and brand activations. We’d both been producing high-end experiences around the world, but from slightly di erent angles. Before all of that, though, my journey looked very di erent. I actually started my business with

nothing more than a single Disney costume, no formal training, and no background in business. As a former performer, I had an instinct for storytelling and creating emotion, but the business side was something I learned completely from scratch. What began as small-scale performances slowly grew into Pop Up Global, a company that went on to deliver luxury entertainment productions across the world. It was proof that passion, creativity, and a willingness to take risks could open doors I never imagined. Back in 2020, the world as we knew it stopped. The pandemic brought the events and entertainment industries to a complete standstill, and for people like us whose work revolves around

bringing joy, energy, and connection to others, it was a strange and challenging time. But it was also the spark that led to something truly special.

Robyn and I joined forces to create the very first socially distanced Santa’s Grotto at Gisburne Park during COVID. The idea was simple: to reunite people, to create a sense of magic and normality at a time when the world desperately needed both. We had no grand plan or longterm vision back then; it was born out of circumstance, but it turned into something far bigger than either of us expected.

Post-pandemic, there was still a huge gap in the market for that kind of experience. On one end, you have visiting the real Lapland, which is incredible but not accessible to everyone. On the other hand, your local garden centre Santa. There was nowhere o ering that accessible, but elevated festive experience that still felt truly magical.

That’s how The Grotto was born: from a shared belief that festive experiences could be luxurious and immersive, yet welcoming and inclusive at the same time. We wanted to create something that didn’t just look beautiful but felt special, an experience that stayed with families long after they left.

From there, my business, Pop Up Global, took me to Dubai. While I was there, I told Robyn that there was literally nothing like The Grotto and that Western expats were craving something nostalgic. Dubai is a melting pot of cultures and celebrations. What surprised us most was how much local families loved it too. Here, everyone celebrates everything: Christmas, Diwali, Ramadan, Eid, and yet there was nothing of premium quality for the festive season. So we brought that touch of British festive magic to the UAE.

GOLDILOCKS & THE THREE BEARS

5 December-4 January, Altrincham Garrick Playhouse

Roll up! Roll up! The Circus is in town! Dame Gertie Dollop runs a Circus show with her son, Silly Billy, but they have fallen on hard times particularly with the dastardly Ringmaster Heinkel, owner of the rival 'Circus of Horrors' up to his devious old tricks. Goldilocks dreams of running away with the circus, but her father the debt-collecting Baron Wasteland won't allow it and demands the overdue pitch fees from Gertie and Billy. They need a miracle, however, after their honeypot full of money is taken in the middle of the night by three porridge hungry, talking bears. Could the bears be the new star attraction Dame Gertie has been searching for? And can Mystic Sharon with her crystal ball see a future for the Circus and save the day?

The response was incredible. Our first season welcomed thousands of families to experience something truly special, from writing letters to Santa and enjoying face painting, to browsing market stalls serving hot chocolate in branded cups, and, of course, meeting the big man himself. We watched children’s faces light up, parents reconnect, and people rediscover that sense of childlike wonder that only the festive season can bring. It reminded us why we do what we do.

We want people to step inside and feel like they’ve entered a world where magic still exists. This year with The Grotto Dubai we’re taking things to the next level with our partnership with Pineapple Studios as our venue of choice. They’re iconic in London, and because our concept is so distinctly British, it makes perfect sense. As an ex-performer myself, to have Pineapple Studios involved feels incredibly full circle.

What I love most about this journey is that it’s proof of what can happen when creativity meets purpose. The Grotto started as a temporary idea in a time of uncertainty and has since become a global brand built on community, joy, and experience. It’s a reminder that magic doesn’t just belong in childhood; it’s something we can create, share, and keep alive together.

With locations in Manchester, London and Dubai at its heart, The Grotto will always be about connection: families, friends, and communities coming together to experience something that makes them believe in magic again, and we can't wait to keep pushing our global expansion plans.

SOMETHING UNIQUE

Want Christmas cards with a di erence and help a good cause? Then you will want to read about the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists

Here at Absolutely we are always on the lookout for art with a di erence – so stumbling upon a powerful photo series by Ian Treherne was certainly a gift. The series captured the UK’s Mouth and Foot Painting Artists (MFPA), celebrating their extraordinary talent with a stunning image gallery shot by the acclaimed disabled photographer, also known asThe Blind Photographer.

This unique collaboration places a spotlight on these exceptional artists and their artistic process demonstrating that disability has not been a barrier to their creative outputs. One in seven people globally identify as disabled, yet the disabled community remains facing many barriers in society, in the workplace and often with less visibility in mainstream arts and culture spaces.

MFPA artist Tom Yendell says: “Being part of the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists has not only allowed me to express my creativity, but has also given me a platform to advocate for greater recognition of disabled artists in the cultural sector. It’s time for the arts community to embrace our talents and ensure that we are represented in all areas – from decisionmaking to programming. This gallery, captured through Ian’s distinctive lens, is a step towards breaking down barriers and fostering a more inclusive environment for all artists, regardless of their abilities.”

Despite the excitement of a new political landscape, there has been little in terms of clear commitments to disabled people, particularly disabled creatives. This project maintains the positive momentum created by the Paris Paralympics last year, where athletes once again broke stereotypes and raised the profile of disabled talent on a global scale.

The MFPA is proud to unveil this new image series that places disabled artists front and centre. This series captures these talented individuals and has transformed their personal challenges into artistic strength, producing work that is both beautiful and impactful.

By being members of MFPA, these artists’ work is turned into a broad range of Christmas products – cards, wrapping paper, calendars, and more – with proceeds directly supporting their ability to maintain sustainable, independent livelihoods.

Ian Treherne, born with RP Type 2 Usher Syndrome, which causes both blindness and deafness, has made it his mission to document the world through photography. His imagery, known for capturing light, texture, and atmosphere, brings out the depth of each MFPA artist’s story. Ian, whose collaborations with brands like Apple and Channel 4 Paralympics have earned him national acclaim, uses his work to break boundaries and challenge societal perceptions of disability. In this series, he highlights the beauty and strength of the artists, reinforcing the message that disabled people deserve equal representation and credit for their achievements in the arts.

“As a photographer with my own experiences of disability, I am deeply passionate about using my lens to highlight the extraordinary talent and stories of disabled artists,” Ian says. “This gallery is not just about showcasing great art; it’s about challenging perceptions and proving that creativity knows no bounds. My hope is that these powerful images inspire others to see the potential within every disabled individual, and to understand that their voices and talents deserve to be celebrated and heard.”

Now led by the next generation, Paul and Sonia, the business continues to embody Peter’s philosophy of quality, detail and personal service – values that have shaped its enduring reputation over the years. Guests were treated to beautifully presented canapés and drinks curated by Kingdom Thenga of KR Events, whose team also provided impeccable service throughout the evening. The showroom itself was transformed into a space of collaboration and creativity, reflecting Chattels’ long-standing ties to the local business community with several businesses lending their creativity to the event.

Porsche Chester added a touch of luxury with two exquisite cars displayed within the showroom, while E2 Art, curated by Liz and Emma, transformed part of the space into a stylish pop-up gallery,

and paired contemporary artworks with Chattels’ furniture collections to highlight texture, colour, and form. Entertainment came courtesy of Chris Williams from The Magic Bar, Llandudno, who captivated guests with his close-up magic and live music, which added an element of surprise and delight to the evening. Adding another sensory dimension, Felicia Maye Home Fragrances showcased a beautiful range of scented products that complemented the evening’s atmosphere perfectly. LIFE A DOG’S

Remember that dogs are for life, not just for Christmas, write the team at Willows Veterinary Group

Oering a dog a lifetime home is a huge commitment that could span 10 to 15 years. Whether you’ve owned dogs previously or are thinking of becoming a first-time dog owner, it is always best to do your research before committing, and to ensure that you use a responsible breeder or rescue centre.

While having a dog can be rewarding and enriching, it is unfortunately not cheap! They will need regular veterinary appointments, preventative parasite treatments, food, grooming, toys, a bed, a crate and more. Having pet insurance allows you to budget monthly for any unplanned veterinary costs, which can be a huge help if you need to pay for unexpected bills or ongoing treatment and most vets have pet health plans that can help spread the cost of some of your routine care too. You should consider the best size of dog for you and your lifestyle. While small dogs arguably need less space than big dogs, many small or medium dogs can still be energetic and need lots of

exercise, such as Terrier types. Larger or giant breeds, such as St Bernards, can sometimes be more sedentary and have more moderate exercise requirements, but often have shorter life spans. Remember, too, that pedigree dogs can be more prone to health problems.

All dogs need plenty of attention and will not cope with being left alone for long periods of time. This is something to consider if you or your family are often away from your home. If you are a new dog owner, it might also be sensible to select a breed type which is relatively easy to train and can be more obedient, for example a Retriever breed. Or, visit your local rescue centre where you might find a gorgeous pre-trained pet that would love a new home with you.

If you can’t commit to frequent grooming and taking a dog to a professional groomer regularly (which is both a time and financial commitment), then choosing a dog with a short coat length can be a more sensible option.

KNOOPS has certainly been spoiling Chester locals since 2023, but the founder

Jens Knoop explains why they are going even bigger this

festive season

Q What first sparked your passion for chocolate and led to the creation of KNOOPS back in 2013?

A Chocolate has been part of my life since childhood. I grew up in rural Germany, and my grandmother would often o er me chocolate as a treat. Those moments created a lasting connection to the warmth, comfort and joy that chocolate brings and sparked an interest that never left me. When I moved to the UK and eventually settled in East Sussex, I realised that while cafés were full of co ee and tea, there was very little focus on truly high-quality drinking chocolate. I saw an opportunity to create something new to bring people those same feelings of comfort and indulgence through an elevated chocolate experience.

Q How has the KNOOPS concept evolved since you opened your very first shop in Rye, East Sussex?

A When we opened in Rye, the idea was simple: a space dedicated to drinking chocolate, with a curated list

of chocolate %s and a choice of milks and flavours. Since then, the concept has grown in depth and reach.

We now o er a chocolate library of more than 20 chocolates from single origins to blends alongside vegan and

JENS
KNOOP

plant-based options, iced and blended drinks, and an extensive gifting range, allowing customers to recreate their favourite KNOOPS drinks at home. Operationally, we’ve grown from one shop to an international brand!

Q Was there a particular “lightbulb moment” when you realised there was a real appetite for a chocolatefocused drinks business?

A Yes, there was. When we first opened in Rye and the local community came in to try what we o ered, it wasn’t just children or families, it was people of all ages. Everyone was curious about choosing a chocolate %, experimenting with flavours, and discovering their favourite combination. That universal appeal made me realise this concept could go far beyond one small shop.

Q How do you balance staying true to your original vision while adapting to new markets and customer tastes?

A The vision has always been the same: to serve exceptional chocolate drinks made with quality ingredients, choice, and care. What changes is how we keep it

exciting for customers. We introduce new flavours, seasonal specials, and collaborate with brands we admire, like our recent Smartest Hot Chocolate with DIRTEA, that let us innovate while staying true to the craft that started it all. The foundation remains choice, quality, and great service.

Q What inspired you to open a KNOOPS shop in Chester, and how has the city embraced it so far?

A Chester has such a strong café culture and a community that really values quality food and drink. It felt like a natural home for KNOOPS, a place where people appreciate something a little indulgent and a little di erent. The response has been wonderful. Locals have really embraced the customisable experience, and it’s been exciting to see how quickly it’s become part of the city’s daily rhythm.

Q As you say, Chester has such a strong café and food culture – what makes KNOOPS stand out in this market?

A At KNOOPS, chocolate is always the hero, never an afterthought. While many cafés serve hot chocolate as a side option, our entire concept is built around it. We

give customers the freedom to explore, choosing their preferred cocoa percentage, milk, and flavour additions. That level of personalisation, paired with our range of chocolate origins, is what sets us apart.

Q How do you choose locations for new KNOOPS shops, and what drew you specifically to Chester?

A We look for communities that value quality and have a welcoming, vibrant energy. We tend to choose busy city centres with a mix of locals and visitors, places where KNOOPS can become part of people’s everyday rituals. Chester ticked every box. It has great energy, and the perfect setting for our kind of experience.

Q How do you train your teams to guide customers through the “Knoopology” process of creating their perfect drink?

A Training is at the heart of everything we do. Knoopology is our method –understanding the taste profiles of each chocolate and helping customers build their perfect drink. Our Knoopologists learn how to ask the right questions and explain the small details – like how a touch of sea salt can bring out the caramel in

CLASSIC HOT CHOCOLATE SET

a 34% milk chocolate, or why chocolates above 54% are vegan-friendly. It’s about knowledge, passion, and great service.

Q What will KNOOPS be o ering over the Christmas period?

A This year at KNOOPS, we’re celebrating Knoopsmas – our way of going all in on Christmas. We’re giving it the full works. Big, bright, and a little over the top – that’s Knoopsmas. It’s how we connect our products and our stores to the season, bringing people together over great chocolate drinks. From festive drinks to indulgent gifts, we want KNOOPS to feel like part of everyone’s Christmas ritual,

comforting, joyful, and a little bit magical.

Q Do you love this time of year?

A Absolutely! It brings back so many childhood memories, and I find myself reliving them every year. It’s a time that encourages slowing down, appreciating the moment, and reconnecting with friends and family. There’s something very special about that sense of warmth and togetherness – it’s what KNOOPS is all about.

Q What are your own Christmas plans this year?

A Spending time with friends and family, watching a few silly seasonal movies, and cooking great food. We always unwrap presents on the 24th at 6pm, a German

tradition I’ve kept since childhood. I could never wait until Christmas Day! And of course, there’ll be plenty of hot chocolates by the fire after long winter walks – the perfect way to round o the festive season.

Q What does the future of KNOOPS look like?

A The future of KNOOPS is incredibly exciting. We’re continuing to grow across the UK and internationally, with plans for new stores in the United States and China. Our goal is to expand while keeping the quality, care, and personality that define KNOOPS. Growth is important, but never at the expense of the experience – that’s what matters most to me.

DESIGN OF tomorrow

Want to know what’s hot in interiors in 2026? Graham & Brown may just have the answer

Each autumn, celebrated interiors brand Graham & Brown announces its Design of the Year and Colour of the Year. For 2026, they are celebrating the beauty of craftsmanship and drawing inspiration from ethereal elements and natural beauty. They have revealed the 2026 Design of the Year to be Eternal Weave, Mural of the Year as Eternal City and Colour of the Year the glorious sounding Divine Damson.

DESIGN OF THE YEAR:

ETERNAL WEAVE

This magical and whimsical design is heavily influenced by nature, mythology and the craftsmanship of the designs that come to life through texture, colour and storytelling. This detailed and intricate work of art features tropical flowers, plants, birds and reptiles in jewel colours to bring this exotic and captivating design to life.

The Graham & Brown in-house design studio drew inspiration from ancient textiles, weaving a continuous thread of creativity that has been passed down through generations. The hand-painted tapestry pays homage to the artisans who came before, with a fantastical design that celebrates storytelling through the ages. The mystical element to the design taps into the allure of an enchanted garden, helping to turn homes into a whimsical space that evokes a sense of magic.

This year’s wallpaper design features a hand painted look, inspired by a piece of

artwork from Graham & Brown’s archive of over 50,000 pieces. The archival piece had a hand-stitched appearance and rich texture, which the design team sought to recreate for the Design of the Year 2026. The final creation is brought to life with a vibrant palette, intricate detailing, and expressive sketches that together evoke an extraordinary, mythical vision. Eternal Weave is available in six colourways and this design is produced as a double-width set, necessitating the use of two coordinated rolls (A and B) to achieve the complete horizontal repeat.

The inspiration for the mural of the year, Eternal City, was taken from the architecture and textiles of the Pink City of Jaipur; this beautiful ancient city has a rich heritage and a unique charm that is highly regarded by artisans around the world. Graham & Brown designer Victoria Davison undertook the task of meticulously hand-drawing and painting this intricate mural, a process that took several months

in the studio. Her technique was inspired by traditional Indian miniaturist painting, known for its exquisite detail achieved using fine brushes and mineral pigments. Her intricate detailing brings the design’s vibrant cityscape to life through jeweltoned colours, botanical motifs, and delicate linework – resulting in a piece that truly delights the senses.

Paula Taylor, Stylist and Trend Specialist at Graham & Brown, says: “The Designs of the Year draw inspiration from the makers who came before, reflecting a timeless human desire to explore texture, colour, and narrative. This storytelling was often rich in vibrant hues and intricate scenes of mythic tales and royal life; they portray gods, demons, fantastical beings, and sacred symbols. These designs not only preserve artistic skills and inspire innovation, but also embody cultural continuity. In many traditions, they are cherished as sacred heirlooms, offering a tangible link to the divine.”

COLOUR OF THE YEAR:

DIVINE DAMSON

A perfect deep damson shade, the Colour of the Year 2026 is a timeless and versatile colour that suits a variety of styles and environments. The dark damson colour evokes a sense of elegance, luxury and sophistication. Versatile and timeless, it suits a wide range of settings from casual to formal, a classic colour that transcends fleeting trends that will never go out of style. As a colour Divine Damson can come across as playful or sophisticated. Its versatility makes it suitable year-round offering a cocooning, comforting feel in the colder months, while in summer, natural sunlight brings out its vibrant depth allowing it to transition seamlessly across the seasons.

Paula Taylor says about the Colour of the Year: “Divine Damson brings a dramatic flair to any space, its subtle violet undertone adding a touch of refined elegance. The dark cherry red colour feels bold and polished, making a strong visual statement. Divine Damson works well as a standalone colour as it’s such a vivid and rich colour. You can also soften its intensity with grounding neutrals like Chesterfield or Glimmerous. When combined with muted shades like pastels or warm neutrals, it levels out the bold colour by adding warmth and balance. Soft greys will balance the intensity and keep a modern look, whereas earthy neutral tones will complement the richness beautifully.”

Like all Graham & Brown paint, Divine Damson is an eco-paint, is water-based, odourless and ultra-low VOC, resulting in a more environmentally friendly product. The paint cans are fully recyclable and

there is no animal testing involved in any Graham & Brown products. The Colour of the Year is also available as made to measure curtains and Roman blinds.

Iona Graham, of Graham & Brown, says: “We’re incredibly proud to unveil our Colour and Design of the Year for 2026. This collection is the result of months of dedication and creativity from our talented team, who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that emerging trends are not only reflected, but also lead the way in our designs. At Graham & Brown, we bring nearly 80 years of craftsmanship, innovation, and design heritage to everything we do. As a fourth-generation family-run business, it’s a privilege to take this legacy from our home in Blackburn, which has been our home from the beginning, and share it with the world.”

building UP

Absolutely chats to Cheshirebased Annie Moore, founder of Hampton House Interiors, about local inspiration, design approach and a big 2026 ahead

Q What first inspired you to pursue a career in interior design?

A From a very early age, I remember being intrigued by people’s homes and spaces that I would visit. As a child, I was forever rearranging my bedroom or trying to input on what furniture my family should be putting where. As I grew up, I naturally explored different avenues and ended up studying Fashion Buying & Merchandising at university. Before the end of my first year, I was regretting not following my heart and studying interior design. There were parts of the course that interested me, particularly the business and textiles modules, so I decided to finish the degree and do everything in my power to ensure I had a job in interior design by the time I left university. I took any work experience I could get and spoke to as many people as possible, making it my mission to have a job lined up before I finished my exams. Luckily, it paid off, and I left university on the Friday, walked into my interior design assistant role on the Monday – and I’ve never looked back!

Q What inspired you to create Hampton House Interiors, and how did the brand come to life?

A Hampton House Interiors was born out of a genuine passion not just for interiors, but for creating a working environment that I could be proud of. I am surrounded by people who run businesses, it really is all I have ever known, and for as long as I can remember, I have wanted that for myself. I dreamt of Hampton House Interiors

for a long time before it became a reality and when the time finally felt right, I took the leap. It started quite simply, with a few lovely projects and a lot of hard work, and it’s grown so naturally from there. I wanted to build a brand that reflects my love of timeless design and a really personal approach to each home we work on.

Q How would you describe the signature aesthetic behind Hampton House?

A I would say we take a very British approach to our interiors. Our style is country classic with the odd eclectic twist.

Q What types of clients do you enjoy working with?

A I love to work with clients who really know what they like. Working collaboratively alongside people who have a really strong sense of their personal style, especially when it aligns well with ours as a studio, is so exciting. This is where truly incredible designs are born and the boundaries can be pushed a little, creating the most magical spaces.

Q Can you share a particularly memorable design project and what made it stand out?

A I won’t share too much yet as the project is not

quite finished, but we are currently wrapping up our largest and most exciting project to date. A true Cheshire country home, perfect for entertaining, which we are so excited to share.

Q How do you balance creativity with the practical needs of clients’ everyday lives?

A For me, it’s all about understanding how people actually live in their homes. I love being creative and thinking about how a space will look, but it always has to work in real life. We spend a lot of time getting to know our clients – how they move around their space, what they need day-to-day, and what makes them feel comfortable. From there, we can blend style and practicality, so the home feels both beautiful and truly liveable. It’s that mix of imagination and function that makes a space really work.

Q How has being based in Cheshire influenced your business and design approach?

A Being based in Cheshire has had a huge influence on the way we approach design at Hampton House Interiors. The rolling countryside and the mix of historic country homes and estates have always really inspired the aesthetic we love to create. We aim to capture that quintessential Cheshire country home feel: elegant yet relaxed, layered with textures, natural materials, and subtle, timeless details that make a house feel like a home. It’s about combining sophistication with warmth, so the spaces we design feel effortlessly stylish, but also comfortable and inviting, reflecting the lifestyle and character of the area.

Q Are there particular elements of Cheshire style or architecture that inspire your work?

A Absolutely – there’s so much about Cheshire’s architecture and style that inspires me. I love the traditional Cheshire brick and timber, the elegant Georgian and Victorian details, and the way these homes often have a real sense of history and character. The large sash windows, exposed beams, and classic fireplaces all provide beautiful starting points when designing interiors.

Q How do you source or collaborate with local craftspeople, suppliers, or makers in the region?

A Working with local craftspeople and suppliers is something we really value. We have spent many, many years compiling our list of trusted trades and craftspeople and it’s one of the things we’re most proud of. Cheshire and the surrounding areas are full of talented makers, from furniture makers and upholsterers to artists and bespoke joiners. We love building those relationships because it means we can create truly bespoke pieces that feel personal to each home and also allows us to support local talent where possible.

Q Will you have any time off over Christmas?

A The run up to Christmas is our busiest period. We start our ‘countdown’ from about September and whilst it will always feel a bit mad to be using the ‘C’ word that early in the year, it’s also such an exciting time. We’re busy finishing projects, planning for the year ahead, and making sure we’re ready for those all-important Christmas installations.

Q Finally, what does 2026 hold in store for you?

A It is going to be an incredible year for Hampton House Interiors. Demi, our amazing Head of Design, joined us at the start of this year and has had an immense impact on our small studio, allowing us to take on more projects. We have some truly exciting projects in the pipeline, both with lovely clients that we have worked with in the past and some new ones too. We are currently in the process of moving to a bigger office and studio and growing our team, so it really is all go. I would like to say that we are due a little down time and a slightly quieter couple of months in the New Year, but we are having our first baby in January, so I think that may be wishful thinking! If previous years are anything to go by, they get better and better as each one passes, and I can’t wait to see what 2026 has in store for Hampton House Interiors

Earthy, elegant and effortlessly modern: Sarah Bianchi explains why she is championing South African design

When you think of South African style, what springs to mind?

You might picture safari-inspired touches, like zebra stripes, sun-washed khaki tones, perhaps a beautifully carved wooden mask. They’re all part of the picture, but they’re just the starting point. Beyond these iconic motifs lies a vibrant, innovative design scene that’s blending heritage with modern elegance – and quietly shaping the global interiors conversation.

That’s exactly what drew Sarah Bianchi, CEO of Cheshire’s legendary interiors store Arighi Bianchi, to make South Africa a recent stop in their Postcards from… collection. “South Africa is climbing the influence charts within interior design circles,” says Sarah. “And now’s the time to take a fresh look at this design-forward destination.”

It’s a bold move, but it’s not one taken on a whim. Arighi Bianchi’s Postcards from… series is all about transporting customers into the design spirit of a place – whether that’s the relaxed elegance of the Mediterranean or the cosy textures of Alpine interiors. South Africa, Sarah explains, was irresistible for its modern, multi-layered aesthetic.

Too often, South African style gets reduced to the kids’ safari bedroom –cartoon elephants, palm leaf prints – or a vague nod to ‘tribal’ patterns that flatten a rich and diverse cultural heritage into one overused motif. But the reality is far more sophisticated, and far more in tune with where British interiors are heading.

“South African style today is rooted in sustainability, earthy palettes and storytelling with modern elegance,” Sarah says. “It’s about authenticity, not pastiche. It’s a design movement that has grown from a real place – the textures, the colours, the way things are made – but it translates beautifully to any home.”

The country’s design scene has been

gaining momentum for years, with Cape Town Design Week at the heart of it. Far from being a niche trade event, it’s a citywide celebration of creativity – a mash-up of art, fashion, furniture, and ideas, all rooted in cultural authenticity and social impact. It’s here that Sarah first felt the pulse of modern South African style.

“It’s jaw-dropping,” she says. “You see the best of what’s being made today –furniture with clean architectural lines in raw timbers, textiles that tell a story through colour and weave, ceramics that are as much sculpture as tableware. It’s all being created by designers who care deeply about craft, heritage and sustainability.”

Out of this creative energy come brands like Dokter and Misses, known for their playful, geometric forms; Wiid Design, whose work in cork and timber feels organic yet refined; and Weylandts, a master of

blending contemporary shapes with raw, tactile fi nishes. Local artisans work in rattan, ceramic, leather – materials that respond to the light, climate and history of the region.

The palette is equally distinctive: bold yet muted, sun-bleached rather than primarybright. It celebrates clay reds, sage greens, and the soft sand tones of the Namib desert. And these aren’t seasonal colour pops – they’re the tones of the land itself.

If there’s a word that sums up the UK’s current interiors mood, it’s slow-living. Homeowners are looking for pieces that last, not fast-fashion décor that’s outdated in a year. We want warmth, tactility, and spaces that feel grounded in something real.

“Today’s South African design speaks to that perfectly,” Sarah says. “It values storytelling over trend cycles, and texture over mass production. From hand-carved furniture to sun-faded tones, it’s a design language that’s grounded in place but fluent in global luxury.”

And it’s not just about looks. There’s an emotional pull to these interiors – the way a woven chair feels under your hands, or how a ceramic vase holds the light. “There’s a quiet power to South African style,” Sarah adds. “A softness to the palette, a rawness in the materials, and

a sincerity in how things are made. That balance of earth and artistry is exactly how we want our homes to feel today.”

For Arighi Bianchi’s Cheshire customers, the collection brings these qualities

home – literally. Drawing on influences from Cape Town’s artisan studios to the wide skies of the bushveld, Postcards from South Africa is built around four key ideas: Afro-minimalism – a less-butbetter philosophy where form meets function, rooted in heritage craftsmanship. Natural materials – sun-drenched woods, woven grass, stone, linen, and clay. Sustainability by design – ethically sourced, low-impact, and made to last. Emotive palettes – warm neutrals, clay reds, sage greens, and sand tones that echo the South African landscape.

It’s a collection that’s as much about feeling as it is about form. And for Sarah, it’s thrilling to bring that energy to Cheshire. “We’re sharing a way of thinking about design,” she says. “It’s about connection: between materials and makers, between past and present, between a place and the people who live there.”

You don’t need a house on the Cape to embrace South African style. A few key pieces can instantly add warmth and depth to a space – a woven basket here, a raw timber coffee table there – especially when paired with natural linens, organic textures, and a palette inspired by earth and sky.

And perhaps that’s the biggest surprise: for all its sun-baked origins, South African style feels completely at home in a British setting. It brings the outdoors in, celebrates craftsmanship, and invites you to slow down – all things we’re craving in our living spaces. As Sarah puts it: “Good design tells a story. And South Africa’s story is one of creativity, resilience, and beauty. We’re proud to share it.”

YEAR-ROUND LIVING

Make the most of your outdoor space with Crown Pavilions’ garden rooms, gazebos and equestrian spaces

As December’s early dusk falls and the garden takes on its winter silhouette, luxury outdoor living often seems to retreat. But for homeowners who demand the best, the garden shouldn’t hibernate; it should perform. That’s where Crown Pavilions steps in, with its bespoke garden rooms, handcrafted wooden gazebos, and premium equestrian buildings. Each is engineered to deliver elegance, comfort, and style throughout the year, not just when the sun shines.

Winter is a pivotal moment for the garden, a time when many spaces become purely decorative or unused. Yet it’s precisely during these colder months that the right structure, if well insulated, thoughtfully designed, and weatherproofed, can transform your garden into a true year-round extension of your home. Crown Pavilions emphasises that its buildings are created for all-year-round use. Their gazebos incorporate marinegrade blinds that zip together to create a weatherproof seal, infrared ceiling heaters, and solid infill panels. These features ensure that no matter the weather, the space remains cosy, comfortable, and inviting throughout winter.

Garden Rooms For All Seasons

While the term garden room might evoke the long days of spring or summer, discerning buyers recognise that it should be just as usable in December as it is in June. Crown Pavilions’ bespoke garden rooms are fully insulated, doubleglazed, and built to residential-grade standards. Each is designed to withstand the cold and deliver everyday comfort. Picture this: a garden room serving as your home office or gym on a crisp December morning. Fog drifts over bare trees outside, yet inside you’re warm, focused, and inspired. The pitched-roof Heritage Collection, for instance, offers exceptional ceiling height, skylights,

and slimline electric heaters with thermostats. Every detail is designed to help you enjoy the space far beyond the summer-only mindset.

Gazebos: Al Fresco Living Without Compromise

Then there are the gazebos, often thought of as summer “party huts” or open-air lounges. Crown Pavilions challenges that assumption. Their luxury wooden gazebos feature design innovations that are ideal for winter, including full-height marinegrade blinds that zip shut, robust timber posts, cedar-shingle roofs, and integrated heating options.

Imagine hosting an early-evening December cocktail party beneath your gazebo’s roof. Lights shimmer across the frost-touched lawn while a gentle heater hums above. The structure keeps out the chill, becoming a true living room for the outdoors. As the brochure puts it, “You want to be certain that your gazebo won’t simply look stunning in the spring, summer and autumn, but that it will also cope with British winters.”

Crown Equestrian

Beyond the garden, Crown Equestrian brings the same uncompromising quality to stables, barns, tack rooms, and riding arenas. Built for performance, safety, and visual harmony, these structures complement their rural surroundings while providing outstanding durability and functionality.

From private estates to professional equestrian facilities, Crown’s bespoke approach ensures every design meets the needs of both horse and rider. Each structure is created with architectural detailing, superior materials, and true all-weather practicality.

Why Choose Crown Pavilions?

What sets Crown Pavilions apart is not only the product, but the service and craftsmanship behind it. The company carries the prestigious Marque of Excellence and is TRADA-certified, meaning every timber joint, panel, and finish is engineered to last.

With over 20 years of British craftsmanship and thousands of installations across the UK and Europe, including many for high-profile clients, Crown Pavilions has earned its reputation as ‘The World’s Finest Garden Rooms and Gazebos’.

For those who expect true luxury, the extras matter. From bespoke finishes and engineered oak flooring to fully customised layouts, integrated lighting and heating, every detail is considered to make your garden building feel like part of the home, not an add-on.

Introducing 16A: contemporary luxury residential architecture rooted in context

Founded five years ago, 16A is an RIBA Chartered Architecture Practice based in the North West of England, with studios in both Liverpool and London. Since its establishment, the practice has become recognised for its refined approach to high-end residential renovations and bespoke new homes, offering a complete architectural service that spans from early concept design

through to planning, technical delivery, and construction oversight.

The studio’s ethos is rooted in the belief that exceptional architecture grows from a deep understanding of place. Each project begins with an exploration of site, context, and client vision, resulting in designs that are imaginative, practical, and responsive to their surroundings. The team combines creative design thinking with rigorous technical expertise, delivering buildings that are both beautiful and enduring.

Over the past half-decade, 16A has developed a portfolio of distinctive private homes across Cheshire, Merseyside, and beyond. Many commissions involve transforming existing buildings – unlocking spatial potential within restrictive planning contexts such as conservation areas and the green belt. By carefully analysing local policy and environmental constraints, 16A consistently identifies opportunities for design innovation that others might overlook. Clients value the studio’s personal approach, with every project tailored to individual lifestyles, materials, and landscapes.

THE BLACK HOUSE, CHESHIRE

A recent commission that exemplifies the practice’s ethos is The Black House, a transformative renovation located within the green belt near the Dee Estuary in Cheshire. 16A were appointed to assess an existing 1.5-storey family home situated on a semi-wooded plot just a stone’s throw from the estuary’s edge. The site presented both extraordinary opportunities and strict planning constraints due to its rural designation and environmental sensitivity.

PHOTOS ON THESE PAGES, THE BLACK HOUSE

The brief was to maximise floorspace and create a contemporary family home that could respond sensitively to its landscape. Working within the limitations of green belt policy, 16A skilfully reconfigured and extended the existing structure, devising a solution that increased the home’s volume and light without exceeding policy thresholds. The result is a design that demonstrates the power of thoughtful architecture to achieve significant transformation within tight planning controls.

At the heart of the new design is a doubleheight glazed entrance link, conceived as an exhilarating focal point that connects the original house with a newly proposed side wing. This transparent link forms a luminous threshold and anchors a sun-lit front courtyard, offering the family an outdoor space ideal for entertaining on summer evenings. The courtyard, framed by glass and blackened timber, becomes a calm, sheltered heart to the composition – where reflections, planting, and light interact beautifully throughout the day.

From the front courtyard, movement through the house is fluid, leading naturally to the rear garden and wider landscape beyond. The transition between these spaces is seamless, and the outdoor areas have been purposefully arranged to create distinct zones for dining, relaxation, and play. The conceptual layout of the first

floor maximises the connection between the surrounding woodland to the east and the expansive views across the Dee Estuary to the west, ensuring every room engages with the natural setting.

Externally, the home is unified by a striking skin of black-stained larch cladding. This bold yet understated material choice allows the architecture to sit quietly within its wooded surroundings while expressing

a clear contemporary identity. In different lights, the timber shifts from deep charcoal to warm brown, giving the building a tactile, ever-changing quality. It is this distinctive aesthetic that gives the home its name: The Black House.

A DISTINCTIVE VISION FOR CONTEMPORARY RURAL LIVING

Through projects like The Black House, 16A continues to define a distinctive architectural voice in the North West and beyond – modern, contextually grounded, and deeply human. The practice demonstrates that good design can enhance not only the beauty and efficiency of a home, but also its relationship with the wider landscape.

After five years of steady growth, 16A stands as a creative, collaborative practice with a clear vision: to deliver architecture that enriches everyday life and celebrates the character of place. From concept sketches to final detailing, every stage is guided by precision, craftsmanship, and a passion for quality. Whether your project is rural, coastal, or urban, 16A brings creativity, experience, and technical expertise to deliver exceptional spaces.

If you’re planning a high-end renovation, new build, or sensitive green belt project, the team at 16A would love to hear from you.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

The Director of The Main Company on how to illuminate the hub of the home over the festive season

The kitchen has evolved into the heart of the home, where cooking, entertaining and family life all come together. While cabinetry, worktops and flooring often take centre stage, lighting plays an equal role in shaping the look, feel and functionality of the space. Here’s how to plan kitchen lighting effectively, from illuminating cooking zones to creating ambience around an island.

START WITH A DETAILED LIGHTING PLAN

Once you have figured out the position of your kitchen units, you can start to think about a loose lighting plan. It’s essential to consider the different zones within your

kitchen and how you will use them to ensure the right level of lighting is chosen. For example, allow provision for lighting internal cupboard areas, avoid standing in your shadow when at the sink, choose brighter task lighting for prep areas and ensure softer lighting for atmosphere. A key tip is to ensure you have the choice to switch lights independently from each other as this will make a huge difference with the ambience at different times of day. To help aid this, dimmer switches are ideal. Do not rush your lighting plan – take time and be considered in your choices.

LAYERING IS KEY

A well-designed kitchen lighting scheme blends practical task lighting with ambient and accent solutions to create balance throughout. Ceiling spotlights or track

systems provide general illumination, ensuring the entire room feels bright and welcoming. These then need to be paired with targeted lighting in specific zones, such as above the hob or sink, to guarantee safe and comfortable cooking and preparation spaces.

CREATE A STATEMENT WITH AN ISLAND

As a multifunctional hub, the kitchen island serves an array of purposes from cooking and food preparation to entertaining and dining. Therefore, it is only right to introduce impactful, statement overhead lighting to highlight this zone. Eye-catching pendant lighting not only provides practical task lighting, but it also allows an opportunity for you to be bold with your design choices. Whether indus-

trial metal shades or an Art Deco-inspired chandelier, island lighting helps to define the area, anchoring it visually – especially within an open-plan space.

ADD CHARM TO WALLS

Wall lights have been increasingly popular with homeowners as they add definition and warmth, helping a kitchen to feel cosy and lived in. Their versatility means they serve a multitude of purposes and can be installed in an array of places within a kitchen. A favourable position is above or either side of the sink or hob, especially if the kitchen design focuses on lower cabinets rather than wall cabinets. Not only do they provide soft task lighting, but they add personality to walls. Make sure you choose lighting with the correct rating, so they are suitable for wet areas. Another

great option for wall lighting is highlighting personal possessions, artwork and cookware on shelves for example.

LIGHT UP A LARDER

A pantry or larder can be seen as a second kitchen in many homes and therefore deserve just as much attention when it comes to lighting design. Whether a larger walk-in space or a cosy breakfast nook with a coffee machine, integrated LED strips fitted under shelves ensure good visibility, while motion sensor lighting is also a popular option. For walk-in pantries, spotlights or a small pendant provides a stylish yet functional touch, making the space feel like a seamless extension of the kitchen. See

FUTURE READY

What’s cooking in kitchens as we approach 2026?
Chris Prater, of NG Bespoke , rounds up the hottest trends

Over the past year, I’ve noticed a real shift in kitchen design. What used to be a purely functional room is now one of the most expressive and multi-purpose spaces in the home. People are designing kitchens that not only look beautiful but also reflect a slower, more mindful way of living. Personally, I love how the latest trends are blending warmth, texture, and technology in a really balanced way. One of the biggest changes is the move away from stark white kitchens. Instead, warmer, nature-inspired tones are everywhere. I’m seeing a lot of earthy neutrals – think olive green, taupe, terracotta, and soft browns – paired with natural materials like wood and

stone. These colours create a calmer, more grounded atmosphere. I think this shift says a lot about what people want right now: comfort, authenticity, and a connection to the natural world. Light oak and walnut cabinetry are especially popular, bringing an organic softness that feels timeless.

Another trend that stands out to me is the mix of materials and textures. Instead of everything matching perfectly, kitchens are now all about contrast – fluted wood panels against smooth stone, matte finishes paired with touches of gloss, and statement splashbacks made from marble or textured tiles. This layered look makes the space feel bespoke and personal. Functionality has also become more streamlined. Hidden storage and integrated appliances help maintain a clean, uncluttered look, especially in open-plan homes. Handleless drawers, concealed pantries, and clever organisation systems keep everything tidy without sacrificing practicality. I love how minimalist design has evolved – it’s less about being cold and more about making everyday living effortless. Kitchen islands continue to dominate, but they’ve evolved beyond just extra counter space. They now serve multiple roles – a prep area, a dining spot, even a casual workspace. Some people are adding built-in wine coolers or charging stations, turning the island into a true hub of the home.

Finally, sustainability and technology are quietly shaping the kitchen of the future with energy-efficient appliances, recycled materials, and intelligent lighting becoming the norm. Even small details – like instant boiling water and filtered taps – show how consumers are embracing smarter, more sustainable ways to cook and live.

Overall, the 2025 kitchen feels warmer, more personal, and more thoughtful than ever. It’s about creating a space that works hard, looks beautiful, and genuinely feels good to live in – and I can see this continuing throughout 2026.

KITCHEN

OF THE

This beautifully composed kitchen blends contemporary detailing with timeless craftsmanship, resulting in a space that feels both elevated and inviting. At the heart of the design is the in-frame slab cabinetry, a modern interpretation of a classic door style. By combining the traditional framed construction with clean, minimalist slab fronts, the kitchen achieves a refined balance: it honours heritage design while embracing present-day simplicity. The soft beige and stone-coloured fronts provide warmth without overwhelming the room, acting as a subtle backdrop to the more expressive architectural elements.

One of the standout features is the integration of Samsung satin beige ovens, which sit flush within the tall run of cabinetry. Their sleek, understated tone complements the surrounding furniture, ensuring the appliances enhance rather than interrupt the aesthetic flow. This choice reinforces the kitchen’s overall theme of

MONTH

harmony, each component contributing to a unified, elegant whole.

The expansive work surfaces are finished with a bell profile quartz worktop, adding delicate yet noticeable detail to the island and surrounding counters. The subtle veining and soft sheen of the quartz elevate the space, creating a sense of luxury while remaining entirely practical for daily use. Its sweeping curves and polished edges soften the kitchen’s strong architectural lines, introducing an element of approachable sophistication.

Functionality has been carefully considered, particularly in the division of the kitchen into two purposeful zones. The island hosts a dedicated cooking sink area, complete with a Quooker tap for instant boiling water. This placement ensures efficiency during food preparation, enabling seamless workflow between the vented induction hob, the sink, and the generous countertop space. Behind the island is where the single oven, combi oven, warming drawer and integrated fridge freezer can be found. Opposite this, the secondary run of cabinetry houses a cleaning area, outfitted with a pull-out tap and integrated dishwasher. By separating cooking and cleaning tasks, the layout improves usability while maintaining a tidy, uncluttered appearance.

The material palette contributes significantly to the room’s warmth and distinct character. The exposed timber trusses overhead introduce natural texture and architectural drama, drawing the eye upward and celebrating the height of the vaulted ceiling. Their honey-toned finish contrasts beautifully with the paler cabinets and walls, grounding the space with rustic charm. Below, the stone floor ties the design together, its neutral shade complementing both the cabinetry and the timber elements. The flooring’s durable finish is ideal for a high-traffic kitchen, offering longevity without sacrificing style.

Lighting has also been thoughtfully incorporated to enhance both ambiance and practicality. The striking pendant fixture above the island provides sculptural interest while delivering useful illumination for the workspace. Under-cabinet lighting along the perimeter adds warmth and accentuates the quartz surfaces, subtly highlighting the craftsmanship of the cabinetry. Taken together, these elements create a kitchen that is both luxurious and deeply functional – a space designed not just to look impressive, but to support everyday living with ease. The blend of traditional framing, modern slab styling, premium appliances, and natural materials results in an environment that feels cohesive, contemporary, and effortlessly welcoming.

Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the festive mood

That’s

entertainment

The founder of Industville writes about how to create warm, inviting spaces for all comers this festive season

As we approach the festive season, attention turns to designing spaces that act as the perfect backdrop for convivial celebrations. In these zones, sculpture, materiality and storytelling collide, with each element carefully curated to work together in harmony and evoke moments of joy – from the first welcome to the final toast.

Whether it is a cosy corner for cocktails or an open dining area for a feast with friends and family, lighting plays a crucial role in setting the festive mood. Everything from fairy lights and candles, to ceiling pendants and wall lights, play a role in illuminating social spaces and enhancing the relaxed, joyful spirit of the season.

When it comes to choosing light fittings for the festive season and beyond, designs that celebrate a sense of playful artistry, from layered coloured glass lighting that recalls the appeal of a flower in bud, to the soft glow of an alabaster globe, are effortlessly elegant. These pieces are more than just functional lighting for mixing drinks and serving canapes; they double as sculptural statements and add visual interest

to the room. These shapes, echoed in the gentle curve of a bar stool or the delicacy of a rounded, marble topped counter, perfectly set the scene for celebration.

Sculptural pendants are trending this season and work particularly well above bars, bringing an artisanal touch of luxury to areas where we socialise. These unique designs draw the eye upward, creating height and drama in the room and providing a talking point that reflects the host's personality and curatorial eye. When chosen with care, a pendant light becomes a centrepiece, a conversation starter and a reflection of thoughtful design.

When it comes to choosing sculptural pendant lighting, opt for unexpected material or colour to make a statement. Unique glass hues such as mocha smoke help to cast an elegant and warm diffusion that is perfect for cocktail hour. This unique hue casts a more golden glow than traditional smoked or clear glass and perfectly sets the celebratory ambience for guests, inviting them to stay for longer.

These fixtures are especially powerful when used in multiples, either clustered pendants or complemented with matching wall lights in creative compositions. Consider clustering pendants at varying heights to elevate the design and introduce

a more relaxed, contemporary feel, with matching wall lights to create a sense of cohesion across the room.

Beyond the aesthetics of festive illumination, it’s important to pay attention to the functionality of the space. Always layer different light sources to ensure the mood of the room is dynamic and can be adjusted to suit the needs and desired ambience of every occasion. Every well designed lighting scheme should feature three layers; ambient, task and accent. Ambient lighting provides the room’s overall illumination, setting the tone and

ensuring the space feels warm and inviting for your guests. Ceiling fixtures such as chandeliers and pendants are best used to achieve this balanced, shadowfree glow. Task lighting such as lighting over countertops in kitchens or table lamps focuses on specific areas where activities like cooking and cocktail mixing take place. These lights should be bright enough to reduce eye strain, yet targeted to avoid unnecessary glare. Finally, accent lighting adds depth and visual interest by highlighting architectural details, artworks or other focal points. Wall sconces, spotlights and LED strips are perfect to add this finishing touch.

As well as supporting livability and ensuring the lighting feels balanced, this layered approach creates atmosphere, allowing the mood to shift seamlessly from daytime gatherings to intimate evening soirees.

Integrating technical elements such as dimmer switches and smart lighting systems also allows vital flexibility to tailor light levels for any festive occasion – and longevity to the design for the rest of the year. As the evening evolves you want the lighting to evolve with it. Lighting should be

slightly brighter during the early evening whilst guests are catching up and gradually dimmed as the night continues until everyone is finishing their last sips.

Selecting the right bulb temperature is also vital, with a warmer colour temperature, around 2700K to 3000K, perfect for spaces where guests might gather in the evening such as bars, dining or living rooms. Cooler white toned light can sometimes feel clinical, but warmer tones echo the natural glow of firelight and sunset, effortlessly creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

When it comes to festive entertaining, it’s all about the balance of beauty and function that can elevate a space from basic to spirited. The art is in the detail, from the soft shapes of the furniture that echo throughout the room and to the colour of a light bulb, it all plays a part in creating a setting that brings people together. These layered, thoughtfully lit spaces serve as the backdrop for celebration where meaningful moments are shared.

“What seem like a million twinkling lights bring the festive season to life while a gospel choir takes things to a higher plane”

Lake Como's Villa d'Este is a showstopper at any time of year, but at Christmas time it is magic

it’s an irresistible combination of serene landscapes and refined Italian style, making Lake Como one of Europe’s most enchanting and glamorous destinations. And nowhere is this more apparent than at the legendary hotel Villa d’Este on the shores of the lake in the village of Cernobbio. Since 1893, this five-star resort has been one of the most celebrated worldwide. And now the hotel is pulling out all the stops to create a Christmas wonderland with a dazzling light display – an extravaganza that we’re going to be part of.

Perfectly positioned in the foothills of the Italian Alps, Lake Como is a shimmering jewel of northern Italy, renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty and timeless glamour. The lake’s deep blue waters

reflect the surrounding peaks and lush, cypress-lined hillsides, while elegant villas and terraced gardens cascade down to the water’s edge. Long a retreat and inspiration for artists, aristocrats, and Hollywood stars, including George and Amal Clooney, the Versace family, and Richard Branson,

Villa d’Este is a short drive from Milan (just 30 minutes), and the first glimpse of Lake Como, shimmering and serene, elicits a quiet gasp of wonder. The first of many. As the grand wrought-iron gates to our hotel swing open, they reveal a tree-lined drive that winds gracefully toward the arrival court, where a stately fountain welcomes us.

From that very first moment, there’s an undeniable sense that we’ve arrived somewhere exceptional. Stepping through the entrance into the majestic reception hall, our gaze is immediately drawn outward, where the lake reveals itself once again. Lake Como is not merely a backdrop here, it is a constant, breathtaking presence – as much a part of the experience as the hotel itself.

Before long we’re seated in the Green House restaurant enjoying a mouthwatering plate of homemade pasta with tru es (it’s tru e season after all) and a glass of crisp white wine while we soak up those views. Everything faces lakeward, including our large and rather grand junior suite. The tall

windows (with balconies) let in the light and lake vistas, the carpets are plush underfoot, and the exquisite antique furniture adds a timeless grandeur. Our suite’s centrepiece is an oversized bed, and there’s a gleaming marble bathroom to marvel at. Everything you’d expect from Italian luxury, but we can’t linger too long as we’re here for the hottest ticket around – the exclusive lighting ceremony and cocktail party.

“At Villa D'Este there's even a chocolate room where we can indulge in the stu to the sound of live harp music”

Nothing is done in small measure at Villa d’Este. Their Christmas light extravaganza has been on everyone’s lips for months. It is not easy to get an invitation, and the planning has been extensive. We’re in glamorous company as we gather in anticipation below the curve of the spiral staircase, champagne in hand. With the flick of a switch, the lights burst to life, and Villa d’Este is turned into a magical, sparkling fairyland. What seem like a million twinkling lights bring the festive season to life and happiness to everyone’s hearts while a gospel choir takes things to a higher plane. Truly something special. Aside from the lighting ceremony, undoubtedly the star of our November Villa d’Este show, we also enjoy exceptional food. Along with tru es on demand, we enjoy the best of Italian wine (the list is like a connoisseur’s encyclopaedia). We indulge in a relaxing facial in one of the nearby villas that belong to the hotel and try out tasty Italian small plates in the jazz club

listening to a charming and talented local singer. There’s even an elegant chocolate room where we can indulge in the stu , along with pastries and afternoon tea, to the sound of live harp music. It is quite magical. We take to the lake one sunny afternoon for a boat tour with Vaporina. That legendary gleaming woodwork and cream leather seats make anyone feel like Hollywood royalty. There’s also a discreet opportunity to villa-spot some of the area’s most exclusive enclaves. Everything seems even more spectacular from the water as we whizz across its sparkling surface with the wind in our hair, taking in mountain views and gorgeous homes. Best view of all is when we pass the place we’ve very quickly come to call home. Sitting majestically on the shore, Villa d’Este doesn’t just live up to the hype, it exceeds it, and go during the festive season and you’ll be well on your way to your best Christmas yet.

We head to Time and Space’s surreal columns, doorways and stone spirals for a beautiful sunset. Making time and creating space. Nine perfect strangers and the perfect group of women. Reconnect, recharge and raise your vibration.

Today we manifest, then relax by the pool. A day trip to relax on the beach by the azure sea, then we check out a ‘secret’ cave. Mandala yoga is repetitive enough for me to follow, and we learn emotional tapping. Abdominal massage with Dede Nazareth @thefunctionalosteopath is incredible.

EDUCATION

Across the north, a quiet revolution is reshaping education. The rise of the allgirls’ school is redefining what confidence, courage and character look like today. Queen Mary’s in North Yorkshire leads the charge – where every girl is encouraged to lead, to question, to shine. A sisterhood of strength. Unapologetically bold. queenmarys.org

QUEEN MARY’S

Early Christmas PRESENT

Bright futures ahead as Queen’s Pre-School launches at the start of 2026

The Queen’s School, Chester, is set to welcome its youngest ever pupils with the launch of its first PreSchool in January 2026. The new o ering will allow girls to join the school from age three, giving them the best possible start to their education. It comes in response to growing demand from parents eager for their daughters to begin their Queen’s School experience earlier.

Building on the school’s proud tradition of academic excellence and strong community spirit, the new Pre-School will be fully integrated into the existing Lower School. Pupils will benefit from small class sizes, specialist teaching and a nurturing environment designed to inspire curiosity, confidence and a love of learning from the very beginning.

The announcement follows the school’s recent Independent School Inspectorate (ISI) report, which praised pupils’ personal development, noting that in early years “children develop confidence and independence which contributes positively to their good progress”.

As part of the Lower School, the Pre-School curriculum will weave together literacy, numeracy, STEM discovery, expressive arts and outdoor exploration through stories, music, drama, languages, play and Forest School specialist. By introducing children to these areas from an earlier age, the school ensures a seamless transition as they progress, while also broadening their experiences and helping them to develop skills and confidence more quickly.

Benefiting from a true ‘whole school’ approach, the new Pre-School class will be fully integrated into life at The Queen’s School. From the very beginning, the youngest pupils will have the opportunity to mix with older girls, who will take on mentorship roles, fostering friendships across year groups and creating a sense of belonging within the wider school community. This supportive environment not only helps the preschool pupils to thrive, but also gives older students the chance to develop leadership and nurturing skills.

Headmistress, Joanne Keville, says: “This launch marks the next exciting

chapter in Queen’s growth, and we are delighted to be welcoming girls from the age of three. From their very first days, they will benefit from the care of our dedicated teachers, while enjoying access to the same exceptional facilities and inspiring environment that support our pupils right through to 18.”

Located within Chester’s historic Roman walls, The Queen’s School is Cheshire’s leading independent school for girls aged 3 to 18. The school consistently achieves outstanding GCSE and A-level results, placing it among the top performers

nationally. Alongside academic excellence, The Queen’s School is dedicated to developing confident, compassionate and well-rounded individuals through a rich co-curricular o ering that spans sport, the arts and leadership opportunities.

The school has a strong sporting heritage, particularly in hockey and netball, with students regularly competing at club, county and national level and securing places in national finals.

WHEN CHILDREN BELONG, THEY BELIEVE

WHERE THE MAGIC

BEGINS

And believing turns to becoming. Exploring what makes Clayesmore so special

Wouldn’t every child love to go to Hogwarts?

Clayesmore is about as close as you can get, not just because of its iconic turret or incredible food, but because it’s a place where every child discovers their own special strengths. Whether you’re curious and creative, bold and adventurous, thoughtful and kind, or driven and determined, Clayesmore is where you discover who you are – and all you can become.

Tucked away in the rolling Dorset countryside, Clayesmore has spent over 130 years weaving this quiet kind of magic – the kind that doesn’t rely on spells, but on connection, care, and curiosity. Success here isn’t defined by a single path; it’s a journey that unfolds uniquely for each individual.

Clayesmore is a school where every child is known – not just by name, but by nature. Teachers recognise each child’s spark, strengths, and story, and

in that recognition, children experience something transformative: belonging. When a young person feels seen, understood, and valued, something extraordinary happens – they begin to believe, and from that belief comes possibility.

The journey begins in the Prep School, where specialist teaching in art, design, music, languages, and sport helps children explore their gifts and build a foundation not just for learning, but for life.

As students move into the Senior School, the world opens wider. The curriculum challenges and inspires, encouraging each child to shine – whether through science or sculpture, coding or climbing, drama or debate – while building resilience, leadership, and independence.

Boarding is the heart of Clayesmore, a close-knit community where trust, support, and respect guide every moment. It’s a home where friendships flourish, individual strengths are celebrated, and pupils learn the enchantment of caring for others.

Sixth Form, students stand tall in their own stories. Small class sizes, expert guidance, and a wide choice of A-levels and BTECs give each individual the freedom and support to carve their own path. As one grandparent reflected: “Clayesmore has given our grandchildren an exceptional education, strong values, and the confidence to take on the next stage of their lives.”

When children belong, they believe; and when they believe, they become – scholars, artists, visionaries, leaders – whatever their story is meant to be. If you’re searching for a school that o ers more than results, Clayesmore is ready to welcome you.
