ABSOLUTELY’S

Iremember Christmas gifts as indicators of where I was in my life at the time. The first one I truly remember was the Millennium Falcon toy from Star Wars – I don't think I have ever been so in awe since. Then around 11 I recall being gifted my first football shirt, swiftly followed a year later by some boots when I decided to try and emulate my sporting heroes. Into the teens and it was all computer games (I spent FAR too long holed up in my room on the ever-evolving consoles, from my beloved ZX Spectrum to an Amiga), and as I hit university it was money, which was swiftly spent down the pub.

As I have got older, yes, I have become that hard to buy for person. It's not deliberate, or due to any kind of fatigue around Christmas (I love this time of the year), but I genuinely don't ever know what I want when asked. One year I did actually receive pants and socks, although a few hours later my 'real' present came out and it was all a big laugh.

So when our gift guide special comes around, it's very much not just work for me. I am really intrigued to know what kind of goodies are hitting the market this year. I have certainly got my eye on the Fujifilm instant camera and maybe, finally, I can embrace that love for photography in 2026.

And if you need a little encouragement to get into the spirit, we also present a look at the area's top festive trails – it's a true gift.

This November, step back in time with the Buckinghamshire History Festival

The Buckinghamshire History Festival, returning throughout November 2025, is a month-long celebration of the county’s rich and varied heritage. Organised by Buckinghamshire Archives, the festival brings together a lively mix of talks, guided walks, demonstrations, quizzes and exhibitions designed to highlight the stories, landmarks and people that have shaped the region. What makes the festival distinctive is its use of venues across the county, opening up both familiar and rarely-seen spaces to the public. At the heart of the programme are the Buckinghamshire Archives in Aylesbury, where visitors will be invited behind the scenes to view centuries-old royal charters, rare photographs and documents usually kept under lock and key. The festival also embraces historic rural landmarks, such as Quainton Windmill, where demonstrations and tours bring to life the county’s agricultural past. In High Wycombe, history steps into social spaces, with the Library Bar on Temple Street hosting history-themed quizzes, while guided walks trace the town’s industrial and civic development. By scattering events across archives, town centres, rural landmarks and industrial relics, the festival ensures that history feels accessible to all.

UP

TO THE TASK

Buckinghamshire local Alex Horne has made us all laugh for over two decades now. Absolutely looks back at his comedy roots, Taskmaster and Chesham United

Back in my teens, when growing up in Surrey, I was an avid follower of grassroots football, particularly Carshalton Athletic (as I lived close by). One season – I must have been 15-years-old –Carshalton were locked in a title battle with Chesham United and my parents gave me permission to join the team bus to venture to Buckinghamshire for a key league game. I was rather taken with The Meadow, as Chesham’s ground is known by, not so much by being wallopped 4-0 on the day.

So my interest was piqued back in 2021 when Alex Horne was announced as the Director of Football Operations at Chesham United. Already a huge fan of Taskmaster, which he created, this was music to my ears as grassroots football needs all the help it can get. And talking about music, as his comedy group The Horne Section are

on a UK tour right now, including a date at Aylesbury Waterside Theatre on 5th November, I decided now was as good a time as any to delve into Alex’s life and times.

Early Career in Comedy

Born in Chichester, West Sussex, Alex grew up with a love for both comedy and performance. After studying classics at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, he gravitated towards comedy soon after university. Like many of his contemporaries, Alex cut his teeth at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, developing a reputation for inventive, concept-driven shows.

His earliest solo shows included Making Fish Laugh (2000) and How To Avoid Huge Ships (2003). These were not traditional stand-up sets. Instead, Alex used PowerPoint presentations, spreadsheets, and quirky rules to shape his shows, establishing him as an experimental comic interested in structure and games as much

as jokes. By 2004, he was nominated for the Perrier Award for Best Newcomer, an early sign of the recognition he would later enjoy. Alex’s ability to mix the everyday with the absurd became his calling card. His projects often revolved around challenges or unusual frameworks. For instance, in Birdwatching (2007), he tracked birds he had spotted across Britain, while Wordwatching (2010) explored attempts to invent new words and get them into the dictionary. These shows combined documentary impulses with comedy, showing Alex’s penchant for rules, systems, and playful bureaucracy – themes that would later crystallise in Taskmaster.

The Birth of Taskmaster

The idea for Taskmaster famously began as a live Edinburgh Fringe show in 2010. Alex devised a format in which comedians were given strange tasks to complete. He positioned himself as the “Taskmaster” issuing the challenges, while contestants had to use ingenuity and lateral thinking to succeed.

The Fringe shows proved popular, and Alex saw the potential for television. Alongside Avalon, the production company that represents him, he developed Taskmaster for Dave, the UK digital

channel. The key twist in the transition from stage to screen was the introduction of Greg Davies as the titular Taskmaster, with Alex himself taking on the role of assistant. This dynamic became central to the show’s appeal: Greg as the towering, bombastic authority figure, and Alex as the understated, rule-quoting sidekick who both enforces and subverts the framework.

The television version premiered in 2015 and was an instant hit. Combining surreal challenges with the unpredictability of top comedians improvising their way through them, Taskmaster quickly developed a

devoted following. Part of its charm lies in its celebration of silliness and creativity: contestants often fail in spectacular fashion, but failure is never fatal; it is, in fact, often funnier than success.

Taskmaster has run for 20 series in the UK, with celebrity specials and a dedicated Taskmaster Champion of Champions. The show won a BAFTA in 2020 for Best Comedy Entertainment Programme and has been exported to multiple countries. Through it, Alex has established himself not just as a performer, but as a format creator with international reach.

ALEX, THIRD FROM LEFT, WITH THE HORNE SECTION

THE HORNE SECTION BLENDS JAZZ, IMPROV AND COMEDY INTO A UNIQUE LIVE EXPERIENCE

The Horne Section

While Taskmaster has dominated his public profile, Alex has pursued another major creative project: The Horne Section. This comedy-music band, formed in 2010, blends jazz, improvisation, and comedy into a unique live experience. The group features professional musicians – Joe Auckland, Will Collier, Mark Brown, Ben Reynolds, and Ed Sheldrake – who play everything from trumpet and saxophone to keyboards and drums. Alex serves as frontman, often bumbling his way through musical numbers while the band provides virtuosic backing.

The Horne Section has performed extensively on the live circuit and became a fixture at the Edinburgh Fringe. Their shows are characterised by audience participation, musical parody, and tightly rehearsed chaos. Rather than simply singing comedic songs, they use music as a framework for games, stunts, and improvisation.

Their popularity led to a Radio 4 series, Alex Horne Presents The Horne Section, which ran from 2012 to 2014. On radio, the group showcased original songs, hosted guest comedians, and engaged in playful banter. Later, they moved to television with The Horne Section Television Programme, which aired on Dave in 2018. In 2022, Channel 4 launched The Horne Section TV Show, a sitcom-style series starring Alex

as a fictionalised version of himself. The programme blended scripted comedy with real musical performances, cementing the band’s reputation as one of the most innovative comedy ensembles in Britain.

The band has also produced a popular podcast, The Horne Section Podcast, where guest comedians and celebrities join the group for musical games and conversations. Its informal, playful style has built a dedicated audience, further enhancing Alex’s reputation for collaboration and invention.

Chesham United

Beyond comedy, Alex has an unusual parallel role in football. A lifelong fan of the game, he became involved with Chesham United, a semi-professional club not far from where he lives. In 2021, he was appointed as the club’s Director of Football Operations.

The appointment surprised many, but Alex has been open about his a ection for grassroots football and his desire to use his profile to support smaller clubs. His role at Chesham United has involved overseeing aspects of the club’s development, helping to attract sponsorship, and raising awareness of the team within the community.

In interviews, Alex has described the position as both serious and playful. He brings a professional interest in helping the club grow but cannot resist finding

humour in the incongruity of a comedian working in football administration. The overlap between sport and comedy has long interested him: football, like comedy, thrives on unpredictability, drama, and community. Chesham United, who play in the National League South, have benefited from his visibility. His involvement has helped generate press coverage and attracted new supporters. For Alex, it has been a way of channelling his passion for football into tangible support for a club that embodies the values of community sport.

A Distinctive Comic Voice

Looking across his career, a clear pattern emerges: Alex Horne thrives on rules, structures, and playful constraints.

Whether creating arbitrary challenges in Taskmaster, designing spreadsheet-driven Fringe shows, or conducting a band of jazz musicians, he uses frameworks as springboards for comedy. His persona is often that of the slightly awkward bureaucrat or conductor, directing chaos but never quite in control of it.

This approach has made him one of the most influential British comedians of his generation. Taskmaster has inspired copycat formats and has given rise to a new style of panel show that celebrates creativity and chaos rather than quickfire wit alone. The Horne Section has opened up space for music and comedy to mix in unexpected ways, and his football role demonstrates how comedy personalities can engage with local communities outside their industry.

The Good, The Bad & The Rugby is o on another tour, so how do the trio keep things feeling fresh?

The Good, The Bad & The Rugby is a weekly podcast starring England legends James Haskell and Mike Tindall, alongside noted broadcaster Alex Payne, that debuted at No. 1 in the Apple charts before releasing its first episode. Featuring some of the biggest names across rugby, as well as the wider sporting and pop-cultural realms, it has attracted a cult following due to its rare ability to draw in the core rugby fan while cutting through and engaging a wider audience too. Such success is due to the show’s USP: the special connection between Alex (Good), James (Bad) and Mike

(Rugby), as well as their guests. These relationships allow the guys to capture the personalities and characters of guests, inside and outside rugby, digging beneath the veneer to unearth real, raw stories. There is no defining an episode, no silly gimmicks; it’s an intoxicating cocktail of humour, sadness, anger. A rollercoaster of emotions slotted into an hour and a half. Absolutely was keen to find out more ahead of their latest tour, sitting down with Windsor-born James and his co-host Alex.

Q With repeat visitors in the crowd, what’s your approach to refreshing or remixing the stories you tell?

JAMES: Because I’ve spoken a lot, the one thing I don’t want is for people to turn up and hear the exact same set. That’s not

easy – it’s not like Ricky Gervais writing a brand-new tour. We’re not comedians, but we’re constantly battling with: “What’s this tour about? Do people want real rugby insight, or just to be entertained?” I’m definitely more of an entertainer. The funny thing is, when we do theatre tours, most of the people there haven’t even listened to the podcast. The audience is often a bloke whose wife bought him tickets, or someone who just saw two international rugby players on a poster. They turn up not knowing what to expect. So, unlike a comedian, we can’t guarantee what the audience wants. Sometimes it’s serious, sometimes it’s laughter. That’s where Alex is brilliant – he steers the ship and figures out what the crowd needs. He’ll

nudge me and say, “Tonight they want to laugh.” Then Mike or Alex will throw me a loaded question, and o we go.

I also try to sneak in two or three fresh stories each night. And I’ll often add new twists to old ones, just to keep Alex and Mike guessing. They’ll be mid-laugh, going, “Where the f**k did that come from?” And that energy feeds the whole show.

Q Alex, what’s your secret to balancing the mayhem between Mike and James on stage?

ALEX: I’m still working that out! Honestly, I often sit there thinking, “What the hell is going on?” But the secret of both the podcast and the live shows is our chemistry. We’re three very di erent people, but like three legs of a barstool – it only works if all three are there.

At the start of most shows, we’ll ask: “Who’s been before? Who listens to the podcast?” That gives us a sense of whether people already know our stories, or if it’s all brand new. Geography helps too. If we’re in Wales, James talks about playing under Warren Gatland and Shaun Edwards on the Lions tour, or Mike’s impact in the 2003 World Cup. In the north, we’ll talk about battles against Sale. The best nights are when the audience

already knows the big moments – then Mike and James come in with the obscene, hilarious anecdotes nobody’s ever heard. That’s the gold.

Take James at Pennyhill Park under Martin Johnson. Everyone knows Johnno as England’s World Cup-winning captain. What they don’t know is that he was nearly driven to a nervous breakdown in 2011 – thanks to James and his teammates! That blend of familiar heroes and ridiculous behind-the-scenes stories is what keeps people hooked. My role is just to poke and prod the guys until they let rip. Then I hang on for dear life.

Q James, how do you pick stories that spark the biggest laughs?

JAMES: You honestly never know which ones will land. Some are guaranteed crowd-pleasers, others catch you by surprise. A lot of it comes from my early days speaking at dinners, or when I tried stand-up. You’d tell a story and think, “This is brilliant,” only for it to flop. Then a throwaway line has everyone in stitches.

That’s why I refine stories over time. I’ll add a new twist or extend the ending to keep it fresh. There’s one about Mike’s wedding – I’ve told it for four years now, but it’s completely di erent today compared to the first time.

Sometimes I even sit with a comedy writer to shape things. It’s not about turning into a stand-up act, but polishing the rhythm so the story flows and lands well. And honestly, the intelligence of the audience matters. Some crowds want sharp punchlines, others prefer broader laughs. You have to read the room.

Q How does touring fuel your wildest rugby “what if” scenarios?

ALEX: I think that’s giving us too much credit. We’re basically just three idiots in a cupboard, laughing at each other’s expense. Touring is chaos, but we love it. This is our third or fourth tour now, and it’s exactly what you’d imagine: motorway service sandwiches, dodgy hotels, too much to drink, and plenty of bickering. Mike’s usually racking up

HERO

Uncovering a surprising fact about James Haskell's time at Papplewick

Papplewick, Ascot, is a boys' only preparatory school for around 200 boys situated opposite Royal Ascot racecourse. Their philosophy is that boys of prep school age have a natural spark and individuality about them and that these qualities should be celebrated, recognising that not only do boys thrive on high expectations and challenge whether it be in the classroom, on the sports field, or in the arts, but by setting the bar high: the boys gain entry to the UK's top senior schools such as Eton, Harrow, Winchester, Wellington, Charterhouse, Tonbridge, Rugby, Bradfield, and Stowe to name but a few. Yet for all these high standards the belief is firmly that the happiness of the boys should come first, and the most coveted prize on Speech Day goes to the boy who has shown the greatest enthusiasm for life, contribution to the community, and above everything else, kindness to others. Boys regularly gain scholarships to top public schools including King's Scholarships to Eton. Tom Bunbury, Headmaster, said: "James Haskell, one of our old boys, has always been amazingly generous with his time, visiting the school regularly, opening buildings, speaking to the boys about his rugby and MMA career, coaching the U9 team, and reminiscing very wittily about his days at Papplewick – having been Head Librarian, he once joked that he might enquire if there was still a job going as a librarian! James is always welcome here – we are immensely proud of his achievements." papplewick.org.uk

JAMES ON A RECENT VISIT TO PAPPLEWICK

speeding points, James never gets out of second gear. It’s disposable fun for us, and hopefully for the audience too.

JAMES: Touring definitely gives us energy. Mike, for example, becomes a completely di erent person on stage – he comes alive. Alex pretends he’s the quiet facilitator, but we’ve realised how many fans he has, and he’s brilliant in front of a crowd.

For me, it’s a chance to show o . People have to listen, and I love making them laugh. Plus, every tour creates more material. Something always goes wrong – or brilliantly right – and that becomes a story for next time.

Like the time in Ireland with Rory Best. There’d been some drama in the UK –I’d upset people (not for the first time). Our producer was nervous about how the show would go. Naturally, Rory and I went out for a few pints beforehand.

We ended up rolling into the VIP meet-and-greet 20 minutes late. Our tour manager at the time – who looked and sounded like Nigel from The Wild Thornberrys – asked politely, “Would you like some waters before going on stage?” I laughed in his face and said, “No. Nine pints of Guinness.” He hesitated, and I told him, “Would you like a job tomorrow?” He returned with the pints. By the time we walked o stage, we’d finished them all and carried on into the night. Our poor producer was nearly in tears, but the vibe was electric. That’s touring in a nutshell: messy, hilarious, and unforgettable.

FROM

THE HORROR OF THE TRENCHES, THERE ARE POEMS DASHED OFF IN THE FULL AWFULNESS OF THE BATTLEFIELD

Some of the most beautiful poetry ever written has come from the horror of the trenches. Edited by Fiona Waters, A Corner of a Foreign Field is a beautifully illustrated WWI poetry anthology featuring the poems of Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon, Wilfred Gibson, A.E. Housman, Robert Graves, Ivor Gurney, Isaac Rosenberg, John McCrae, Stephen Spender, Rudyard Kipling, Edward Thomas, Robert Frost and many more.

The poems of the great war are brought to life by over 180 painstakingly restored black and white photographic images which show relentlessly cheerful faces, smiling in the face of darkest adversity alongside small moments of everyday life back in ‘blighty’ during the catastrophe that was branded ‘the war to end all wars’.

From the horror of the trenches, there are poems dashed o in the full awfulness of the battlefield, as well as those honed with the terrible benefit of hindsight, and others are poems from an earlier age now inextricably linked to the First World War due to their aching beauty, which exactly matched the mood of the nation as an entire generation was lost to the brutality of war.

With war poems usually associated with men, this edition also takes a look at those left behind – the women, the countless mothers, wives, sweethearts,

sisters and daughters whose daily lives were also turned upside down. The collection o ers a unique perspective from the women of the great war, featuring poems written by women like ‘Sing A Song of War-time’ by Nina Macdonald, ‘Christmas 1916: Thoughts in a V.A.D Hospital Kitchen’ and ‘The V.A.D Scullery-Maid’s Song’ by M. Winfred Wedgwood, ‘Women at Munition Making’ by Mary Gabrielle Collins, ‘War Girls’ by Jessie Pope and ‘The Admonition: To Betsey’ by Helen Parry Eden.

A Corner of a Foreign Field captures the appalling carnage of the years 1914 to 1919 through poems including ‘On Your Midnight Pallet Lying’ and ‘Is My Team Ploughing?’ from the series of 63 poems known as ‘A Shropshire Lad’ by A. E. Housman, first published privately by the poet in 1896, alongside classic poems such as ‘Easter 1916’ by W. B. Yeats, ‘In Flanders Fields’ by John McCrae, ‘Dulce Et Decorum Est’ and ‘Anthem for Doomed Youth’ by Wilfred Owen, ‘The Soldier’ by Rupert Brooke and ‘For The Fallen’ by Laurence Binyon.

The poems are counterpointed with images that show death, despair, hope and resilience, ranging from life in the trenches and the bleakness of the battlefield, to women’s war work and the relentlessly cheerful faces, smiling in the face of darkest adversity.

MARY BERRY’S BOOK LAUNCH

On 13th October, The Castle Hotel Windsor welcomed Britain’s beloved culinary icon, Mary Berry, in celebration of her latest book, Mary 90. The sold-out event drew in over 300 fans, food lovers, and local dignitaries for an intimate book signing and Q&A session in the elegant surroundings of the hotel’s grand ballroom. The evening marked a highlight in the town’s cultural calendar, as guests gathered to honour the legendary cook and television personality on the occasion of her 90th year. Mary Berry shared heartfelt stories from her remarkable nine-decade journey, both in and out of the kitchen. Audience members were treated to anecdotes from her career, reflections on family and food, and insights into the making of Mary 90 – a deeply personal book and celebration of a life lived with passion and purpose, published by BBC Books. Guests were welcomed with a complimentary glass of prosecco and a selection of delectable canapés before Mary took to the stage for the interactive Q&A session with Andrew Try, Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire. Each guest

received their own copy of Mary 90, signed by Mary on the night of the event.

“We were truly honoured to welcome Mary Berry to the Castle Hotel Windsor,” said Cluster General Manager, Shaun Bowles. “Her warmth, wit, and wisdom created a magical evening for everyone in attendance. It was a privilege to celebrate such an extraordinary milestone with her.”

Established as one of Windsor’s finest boutique properties, steeped in history dating back to 1528, the storied surroundings of The Castle Hotel made the perfect setting for this exclusive event following Mary Berry being made a Dame Commander by the Prince of Wales for a lifetime of cooking, writing, and baking at Windsor Castle in 2021.

Mary 90 is now available in bookstores nationwide and online. The event was part of Mary Berry’s o cial promotional tour for the book.

SEPARATION ANXIETY

Considering a divorce?
The experts at B P Collins explain what assets you may be entitled to

Divorce is not just an emotional process, it’s also a financial one. Many people facing the end of a marriage understandably want to know what they may be entitled to. B P Collins’ family team provides the answers.

THE STARTING POINT: 50/50 SPLIT

The courts will initially look to split equally all assets built up during the marriage, such as the family home, bank accounts and investments including pensions. However, the courts will then cross check whether this would meet the needs of each spouse and their children. Ultimately meeting needs often leads to an unequal split of the assets.

MATRIMONIAL VS NON-MATRIMONIAL ASSETS

Matrimonial assets are those generated during the marriage, regardless of who generated them, or took on other tasks such as caring for children. Nonmatrimonial assets, such as inheritance, pre-marital property, or gifts are usually excluded. However, if they have been

mingled with family finances, such as buying the family home, they may be ‘matrimonialised’ and therefore shareable. Non-matrimonial assets can also be applied to meet the needs of the parties if there are not enough matrimonial assets.

FACTORS CONSIDERED

The court does not take into account who caused the breakdown of the marriage. It focuses instead on more practical matters including:

•Your children’s needs including their housing (albeit downsizing in most cases) and financial stability

•Each spouse’s income and earning capacity including earning potential

•Financial resources such as trusts that one party is a beneficiary of •Duration of the marriage

•Standard of living during the marriage

•Physical or mental disabilities

PENSIONS

Pensions are often overlooked, but can be the most valuable asset. Pensions can be shared to create a new pension for the receiving spouse or o set against other assets. The court will divide them based on need and can include pre-marital pensions.

BEFORE YOUR DIVORCE IS FINALISED

If you’re financially dependent on your spouse, a family solicitor can help negotiate appropriate interim financial arrangements. If your spouse refuses to make adequate provision, you can apply to the court for an interim financial order, requiring your spouse to pay until a final settlement is reached.

PRACTICAL STEPS

While it can feel overwhelming, being organised helps. Gathering financial information about all the assets will help your solicitor give you more accurate advice and aid discussions with your spouse. Dividing assets is rarely straightforward and outcomes depend heavily on your personal circumstances. If you are going through, or considering divorce, speaking to a specialist family solicitor at an early stage can help you prepare the best way forward, and help you to feel more in control.

Inside the house, key rooms are decorated, and visitors follow the “Grand Festive Tour” through winter traditions from across Europe.

A Christmas Fair (until mid-December) and Food Village add to the experience, o ering artisan gifts and seasonal eats.

A MENU MADE FOR CELEBRATION

This year’s Christmas Fayre menu, available for lunch or dinner at just £59.95 per person, showcases the very best of Italian dining with a festive flourish. It’s a feast of flavour and craftsmanship – where every course feels like a small celebration in itself. Begin with an array of antipasti designed to delight. There’s Gamberoni Luciana –king prawns sautéed in garlic, chilli, and tomato, finished with a touch of cream – or Mozzarella in Carrozza, golden-fried and perfectly crisp, served with a fragrant basil and tomato sauce. Those who love something earthy and indulgent will find Crostone Funghi e Tartufo irresistible, with tru ed mushrooms and Grana Padano atop toasted Altamura bread.

For your main course, the choice is as varied as it is luxurious. Enjoy Branzino – pan-fried sea bass in lime sauce – or Tacchino con Ripieno di Castagne, tender turkey breast with chestnut stu ng and pancetta-wrapped chipolatas, capturing the essence of a classic Christmas roast with Italian flair. There’s also Suprema di Pollo Principessa with mushrooms and asparagus, Salmone Prosecco e Gamberetti served in a Prosecco and prawn sauce, or rich Tagliatelle Porcini with chestnut pasta, porcini mushrooms, and black tru e.

And for those who prefer a little indulgence, Medaglioni al Pepe – fillet steak medallions in green peppercorn sauce – o ers an elegant touch of decadence, the perfect centrepiece for a festive feast. Every dish is served with seasonal vegetables and rosemary potatoes, bringing warmth, colour, and balance to the table.

Dessert is where San Carlo truly shines. The Panettone Bread & Butter Pudding with limoncello and vanilla ice cream o ers comfort with a citrus twist. For chocolate lovers, the Ferrero Rocher Cake – layers of chocolate and hazelnut mousse wrapped in praline – is pure indulgence. Or perhaps the Tiramisu and Panna Cotta ai Frutti di Bosco, with their classic Italian flavours, are the perfect finale. Vegan desserts are also available, ensuring everyone can end their meal on a sweet note.

WHY SAN CARLO IS THE PLACE TO CELEBRATE

San Carlo has always been about more than food. It’s about experience – the kind of experience that makes an ordinary evening feel like an event. During the festive season, that magic multiplies.

The atmosphere is unmistakably Italian – vibrant, stylish, yet welcoming. It’s where you can enjoy a glass of fizz before dinner, linger over espresso after dessert, and feel part of something joyful from the moment you arrive. Service is as polished as it is personal, delivered with that signature San Carlo flair: attentive, generous, and always a little bit theatrical.

Whether it’s an intimate dinner for two, a lively lunch with friends, or a company celebration, San Carlo’s team knows how to make each occasion feel e ortless. Every detail is considered, every guest is made to feel special, and every visit feels like a celebration.

And for those who appreciate great value as much as great taste, the Christmas Fayre menu strikes a perfect balance. At £59.95 per person, it o ers refined, multi-course dining crafted from premium ingredients – an indulgent experience that still feels accessible, with something for every palate and every pocket.

THE SPIRIT OF ITALIAN HOSPITALITY

What makes San Carlo unique at Christmas isn’t just the food or the festive décor – it’s the spirit. This is a family-led collection of

restaurants, founded by Chairman Carlo Distefano and led by his son, CEO Marcello Distefano. Together, they’ve built a legacy of Italian hospitality that blends authenticity with sophistication. Each restaurant reflects that ethos: a place where quality, care, and conviviality come together beautifully.

It’s that mix of energy and elegance – of polished service and heartfelt warmth – that transforms a San Carlo meal into a true celebration.

Effortless PERFECTION

The easiest Christmas turkey you’ll ever cook

Christmas is a time for celebration, not stress, and this year, hosts across the South East can look forward to a festive feast that’s as e ortless as it is exquisite. Imagine a beautifully reared, flavour-packed turkey that requires no brining, no basting, and no fuss. Simply season, pop it in the oven, and let it do the rest.

This Christmas, discerning households can enjoy the luxury of ease with premium, fully mature turkeys available for home delivery on December 22nd or collection from select South East locations on December 22nd, 23rd, and 24th.

NATURALLY PERFECT, NO EFFORT REQUIRED

These aren’t ordinary birds. Each turkey is traditionally reared on the Copas

turkey farm in Cookham, where quality, welfare, and flavour come first. Allowed to mature fully, the turkeys naturally develop a thin layer of fat beneath the skin, nature’s own basting system. The result? Tender, juicy meat and beautifully crisp golden skin, every single time. There’s no need to soak in brine or continually open the oven door to baste. All the hard work has been done for you. Simply season with salt, pepper, and a sprig of herbs, then roast to perfection. It’s the simplest way to achieve restaurant-quality results at home, ideal for those who want their Christmas Day to be indulgent, not intense.

EFFORTLESS ELEGANCE FOR THE MODERN HOST

For households where the tree twinkles just so, the champagne is perfectly chilled, and the table is set with timeless style, this turkey is the ultimate centrepiece.

It’s the perfect combination of artisan craftsmanship and modern convenience, no shortcuts on quality, just fewer steps to perfection. With one simple preparation, you can enjoy the rich flavour and succulence of a hand-reared bird that tastes as though you’ve spent hours tending to it. Your guests will think you have. Each bird arrives oven-ready, beautifully presented, and ready to take centre stage in your Christmas celebrations.

THE STRESS-FREE SECRET TO A PERFECT CHRISTMAS DINNER

This year, let the hardest-working part of your Christmas meal be the oven. Enjoy a turkey that’s been raised with care, perfected by nature, and prepared for your convenience, ensuring that your Christmas Day is as deliciously e ortless as it should be.

At PRESS, dining is relaxed, seasonal and quietly indulgent

NHot of the PRESS

Donnington & Co. has had a stunning revamp – and its restaurant is the tasty centrepiece

estled in the rolling Berkshire countryside, PRESS at Donnington & Co. stands as a quietly confident beacon of contemporary dining.

Following an elegant summer refurbishment, the restaurant now marries sleek modern style with inviting warmth and a menu rooted in British celebration.

The former Donnington Valley Hotel & Spa has emerged as Donnington & Co., familiar in name but refreshed in spirit. Long celebrated for its spa, golf, and serene surroundings, the privately-owned estate has undergone a thoughtful transformation.

At the heart of this reinvention is their signature restaurant, PRESS. Redesigned with warm copper, gold, and orange tones and anchored by a striking central banquet table, the space strikes a balance between elegance and approachability. Here, dining is relaxed, seasonal, and quietly indulgent. British ingredients take centre stage, whether in comforting classics or celebratory dinners, each dish crafted with care and accompanied by a thoughtfully curated wine list.

The menu o ers a glimpse of the kitchen’s careful balance between elegance and comfort. Starters such as burrata with tomato granita set the tone for a dining experience that is both refined and approachable. Main courses like roasted lamb rump, served with confit garlic pommes anna and crushed minted peas, showcase the restaurant’s celebration of seasonal British produce, while desserts provide a decadent finale – from a sticky to ee pudding that is irresistibly indulgent to a chocolate brownie mille-feuille that layers texture and richness with playful finesse. Each dish reflects PRESS’ commitment to simple pleasures, executed exceptionally well.

Afternoon tea remains a highlight; delicate sandwiches, warm scones with clotted cream, and homemade cakes, served alongside tea

or sparkling wine, o ering a quintessentially British pause in the day. Sundays bring their own special rhythm to PRESS with seasonal roasts, freshly carved and served alongside generous accompaniments, showcasing the very best of British produce. The refurbishment extends throughout the estate. Suites have been refreshed while communal areas feel modern yet comfortably familiar with the reception and lobby setting the tone, o ering an inviting welcome that hints at the experience to come. Donnington & Co. has written its next chapter with a quiet confidence. The estate invites guests to slow down, savour the season, and enjoy an experience that is both contemporary and comfortably familiar. At PRESS, that philosophy is served on every plate; simple pleasures, delivered exceptionally well.

Laithwaites' autumn wine selection is here, and it shines a spotlight on independent producers facing real challenges, from wildfires to fragile economies. One standout is Charles Cros Grande Réserve 2023 from Corbières – a pure Syrah made by carbonic maceration for maximum silky fruit. laithwaites.co.uk

Rosaluna has o cially landed in the UK, o ering a lighter take on traditional mezcal. Crafted in Oaxaca from 100% espadín agave and nothing else, it’s clean, herbal, and subtly smoky – ideal for both mezcal newcomers and seasoned sippers alike. mezcalrosaluna.com

Waves of Change

Here’s a wine that gives back. French co-operative Tutiac has launched Help Protect the Ocean, a new range where every detail counts. Crisp, characterful and consciously made, they’re proof you can sip sustainably without skimping on flavour. help-protect-the-ocean.com

Abingworth Vineyard

A star is born SPOTLIGHT

West Sussex has a new player on the wine map. Abingworth Vineyard has just dropped its debut vintage: a bright, zesty Sauvignon Blanc and a pale, juicy Pinot Noir Rosé – both full of promise, personality, and year-round appeal.

The idea was born during lockdown, when Chris and Caroline Stedman decided to swap city life for a vineyard dream. In 2022, they planted over nine hectares of vines on the gently sloping fields of Champions Farm. What began as a mid-pandemic experiment has since grown into a full-blown family a air, with their four daughters pitching in on everything from design to marketing to weeding. Everyone’s involved, everyone’s muddy, everyone’s got an opinion on pruning.

And just like the family behind them, the wines are brimming with character. They’re made to celebrate joy, creativity, and life’s small pleasures – whether that’s raising a glass with friends or stealing five precious minutes of peace and quiet. Use code ABSOLUTELY10 for 10% o your order.

BERKSHIRE AESTHETICS

Wedding photos last a lifetime, so plan your skin and body prep like you plan the venue.

At Berkshire Aesthetics, they recommend starting 9-12 months out for a calm, predictable timeline. Begin with a clinical skin assessment and medicalgrade skincare; add gentle treatments such as SkinPen microneedling, light peels and LED to build glow without downtime. For contouring, schedule CoolSculpting or Emsculpt Neo at least 3-6 months before the day to allow full results. Two to three months out, consider subtle tweakments – Profhilo for hydration, anti-wrinkle injections for frown lines, and carefully placed dermal filler for facial balance – always conservative and never last-minute. Lock your skincare, SPF and maintenance eight weeks before. In the final fortnight, avoid new products or high-intensity procedures. Stay hydrated, sleep well, and ease o salt and alcohol the week before. Aim to look like you –rested, confident and naturally polished.

o pain, no gain, they say. Well they’re wrong about microblading, unless you count the two weekends a year where you might look like you’ve overdone it slightly on the brows. Because there’s certainly no physical pain – and the gains are significant. Before I took the plunge, my brows were terrible. Sparse, wonky, messy, asymmetrical. Still, I was afraid of permanently transforming them into dark, angular, fierce-looking arches – but Karen Betts is not about that at all. Her approach to treatment is to replicate a natural look, and she’ll tell you that directly. In fact, she’ll refuse to give you what she deems the wrong brows. So what is microblading? Essentially, it’s a tattoo. But microblading uses a blade-shaped tool with a row of tiny, barely visible needles to create hair-like strokes along your brows while depositing pigment into your skin. Traditional tattoos use ink, while microblading is done with safer pigment. These fade over time without changing colour. After an initial session my brows look quite intense (the awkward weekend) but tone down quickly, and a follow up appointment two months later ensures that results will last for about a year. “I’ll just book you in for this time next year then shall I?” asks Karen’s assistant. The answer’s a firm yes. I’m never going back to terrible brows.

MAGIC JUST A KIND

Absolutely explores a unique farmhouse in Marlow linked to a Greek shipping magnate, The Spectator and Freddie Mercury

Blueys Farmhouse was built in 1657 and originally known as Finnamore Manor. It takes its current name from former owner, Bluey Mavroleon, a Greek shipping owner who ran the estate as a stud farm alongside Spectator columnist Taki Theodoracopulos, frequently holding game shoots on the grounds.

Blueys Farmhouse consists of a very fine Grade II listed brick period farmhouse with seven bedrooms, in addition to which there is a two bedroom cottage. The farmhouse o ers wonderful accommodation with a number of good-sized reception rooms, including the recently built wing which comprises a large reception area with a spiral cellar, study and bedrooms above. All reception rooms on the ground floor have access via French doors to the York stone terrace outside and the formal gardens.

The accommodation is arranged over two floors and provides a charming and

practical combination of bedrooms and bathrooms and additional reception rooms, and with three sets of stairs it provides a wonderful flow throughout the property.

The brick and timber cottage is a fine dwelling comprising a sitting room, kitchen and two bedrooms and shower room on the first floor. It enjoys its own area of private garden. Attached to the cottage is a timber cladded building housing the laundry room, WC and rooms for the boilers.

At the rear of the house, there are magnificent easterly views across the valley. The majority of the formal gardens are positioned at the back of the property with lawns running to the parkland fencing beyond. The swimming pool is located nearby and easily accessible from both the games room and the drawing room. A water feature runs through the middle of the formal gardens, fed by two ornamental ponds above. The formal gardens climb up a gentle slope, a brick path meanders through trellising up to the sunken hard

tennis court with a viewing gallery. Steps lead up to the timber stable block above: the building comprises a workshop, tack room, four stables and tractor shed.

The ménage is further up the slope with separate access from the lane and has parking opposite for equine vehicles. The land beyond the formal gardens is beautifully undulated countryside, currently used for grazing land, arable land and the remainder is mixed deciduous woodland. The grazing land is situated close to the main house with field shelters and a water supply. Part of the land is let out to a farmer and there is a formal grazing license in place. The land extends in all to about 116 acres.

Absolutely visited the property in Marlow that is currently available for sale, and chatted to Hugh Maconochie, Director – Savills Country House Department, to find out some wonderful nuggets of information about it.

Q What makes Blueys Farmhouse historically significant, and how does its Grade II listing a ect the property?

A Originally known as Finnamore Manor, ‘Blueys’ dates back to 1657 and is a classic example of a Chiltern farmhouse. A combination of original oak, exposed timber beams and Jacobean-style panelled reception halls reflect the property’s history – complemented by all the modern comforts you would expect in a prime country house. The Grade II listing means the property is considered a building of special architectural or historic interest that warrants preservation. While still subject to certain control over changes, these are less stringent than for Grade I or II* properties, but owners must obtain Listed Building Consent from the local authority for

significant internal or external alterations. General maintenance and repairs can often be carried out without formal permission, provided they are done carefully and in keeping with the original materials –however it’s always best to seek advice.

Q How is the accommodation arranged between the main farmhouse and the two-bedroom cottage?

A The main farmhouse has five reception rooms, an open plan kitchen/breakfast room and five bedrooms. It includes a fabulous recently built wing that comprises a large reception area along with a spiral cellar, study and bedrooms above. The cottage, meanwhile, is a fine dwelling in its own right, enjoying its own private garden and comprising a sitting room, kitchen and two bedrooms and shower room on the first floor.

Q Can you describe the layout and flow of the main farmhouse?

A With accommodation arranged over two floors the house has great flow. All the reception rooms are within easy reach as you walk through the property. The main stairs are located in the drawing room but there are additional stairs found in the downstairs corridor, easily accessible from the kitchen/breakfast room. All of the reception rooms also have large French doors that provide access to a York stone terrace and the formal gardens.

Q Do you have a favourite part of the property – and if so, why?

A There are many wonderful attributes to the property, but I particularly like the blend between the original farmhouse and the modern extension that comprises two

large bedrooms, a vast reception/games room and an impressive spiral wine cellar.

Q What features of the gardens and outdoor spaces make them distinctive?

A With uninterrupted views across the surrounding countryside, the outside space is nothing short of breathtaking. For me the most distinctive element is the water features which run through the formal gardens and are fed by two ornamental ponds. They provide a lovely focal point.

Q How is leisure accommodated?

A The leisure facilities are exceptional. The swimming pool is perfectly placed to benefit from the neighbouring games room, while it also enjoys wonderful views across the valley. The tennis court is in excellent condition and has a viewing gallery on one side, where friends and guests can enjoy a drink and watch the sporting action unfold.

Q What equestrian facilities are available, and how are they integrated into the estate?

A The equestrian facilities are in great order and include a timber stable block, workshop, tack room, tractor shed and paddocks. A ménage is located a little further up the garden beyond the tennis court, with separate access and parking from a nearby lane. There’s also plenty of bridle paths to further explore the Chilterns on horseback.

Q How might the cottage and surrounding facilities be suitable for extended family living or guest accommodation?

A Being close to the main residence and with its own private garden, the cottage would be ideal as separate accommodation for older parents or teenage

children who want more independence. Alternatively it could be used as selfcontained guest accommodation for when friends and family visit or for sta . There are lots of possibilities.

Q And, finally, what is the connection to Freddie Mercury?

A Legend has it that some Koi carp that once belonged to the Queen frontman –believed to have been won in a charity ra e by a previous owner – can be found swimming in one of the property’s ponds.

Blueys Farmhouse is on the market with a guide price £8,500,000. For more information, contact Savills Marlow on 1628 499 906 or visit savills.co.uk

FRONT WARM

Absolutely visits The Radiator Centre for some top tips on how to heat the home

When you’re choosing new radiators for your home, there are a number of things you need to take into consideration, including style, size, shape and what you need to use them for.

To work out what size you need for your home, start by calculating the heat output required for your room, which can be done by using an online heat calculator. The results will show an amount in either watts or BTUs (BTU stands for British Thermal Unit, which is the standard heat measurement used in the UK).

All radiators will state an output in either watts, BTUs or both. By knowing how much heat each radiator will emit, you can now find the best one to e ciently heat each room based on your earlier heat calculation.

Q Which radiator is best for which room?

A Some radiators are better suited to one room over another. In the bathroom, for instance, heated towel rails are an obvious choice. Many have dual-fuel options, meaning that when the central heating is turned o in the summer, you can continue to ensure your towels are warm and dry. In the lounge, you might want to have a radiator that’s attractive enough to be the centre of attention in its own right. If you have an awkwardly shaped hallway, consider a vertical radiator, which will make the most of the space whilst still providing a warm welcome.

Q What are the design options for your home’s radiators?

A Whether you favour traditional styles or more cutting-edge designs, you will find some beautiful options available which will make a stylish addition to

the home. Radiators are no longer just functional white boxes, many of today’s designs come in a variety of shapes and sizes, not to mention every colour of the rainbow. Indeed, with some of the latest art radiators, you’d be forgiven for not realising it was a radiator at all.

Q Electric or central heating?

A Choosing between plumbed and electric radiators depends on your specific needs, existing infrastructure and preferences for control and energy e ciency.

Sometimes it is not possible to plumb in a radiator due to the cost of laying new pipe work or getting gas to a new boiler. Having electric radiators might prove to be a sensible alternative.

The key consideration when choosing an electric radiator should be its controllability, as this will ultimately be the thing that determines how e cient you can make it run. Having 24/7 timers allows you to set precise on/o times so you have the heat just when you need it. Most electric radiators will come with an override button if you should then need to turn them on outside the usual schedule. Many will also come with apps that allow you to see what is working in real time.

Plumbed radiators, on the other hand, can be more energy-e cient, especially when connected to a modern, energye cient boiler or heat pump. They spread heat evenly and are well-suited to larger homes. Typically controlled via a central thermostat, this allows for the regulation of temperature across multiple radiators in the home, which may also be done via an app with the correct set up. Although the initial installation may be higher, running costs can be lower, especially with a wellmaintained boiler or heat pump, leading to savings over time. Many homeowners also prefer the look of plumbed radiators, especially in older homes where they match the traditional style.

5 of the best...

New looks for radiators

A Rainbow of Colour

Radiators are no longer limited to plain white, as homeowners increasingly opt for colours that perfectly complement their interiors. This thoughtful choice of hues also aligns seamlessly with the current trend of colour-drenching.

Curved

A fresh wave of radiator design is embracing softer shapes, with curves and circular styles adding a modern, sculptural touch that turns a practical piece into a statement feature.

Is it Art?

Q What are the sustainability considerations?

A Sustainability is a huge factor for everyone and in the heating sector there are some great energy-e cient designs that are now on the market, with more being introduced all the time. One of the recent models, the Soho, features a remarkable water saving of approximately 80% less than a traditional tubular multi-column radiator. When you have less water in the system it means less energy is required to heat it up, saving on cost as well as energy consumption.

Few choices feel as personal –or as daunting – as choosing the right school for your child. With so many options – from state to independent, single-sex to co-educational, or even homeschooling –it’s important to consider which environment will best support your child’s development and happiness.

With the 15th January deadline rapidly approaching for state primary applications, this time of year is peak season for school visits and the creation of the customary ‘school choices spreadsheet’! But what should you look out for when evaluating the options?

Academic standards clearly matter, but a truly enriching education goes well beyond the classroom. Look for schools that nurture curiosity, independence, and emotional wellbeing. Ask how they help students develop the skills and confidence to navigate an ever-changing world.

CHOOSING A SCHOOL

St George’s School Windsor Castle shares its top tips

Consider your child’s personality, strengths and sensitivities – do they thrive in a structured environment, or one that encourages free exploration? Are they confident in large groups, or would they benefit from smaller classes with close teacher relationships?

It can also help to look at how a school supports children through key transition points, such as moving from nursery to primary or primary to secondary. A nurturing environment that recognises individual progress, rather than just academic performance, can make a world of di erence to confidence and wellbeing. The range of co-curricular activities is also key. Programmes in sport, music, drama and outdoor learning can help build resilience, teamwork and selfbelief – qualities just as important as exam results. A strong pastoral system and a values-led culture should be central to school life.

Visiting schools, talking to sta and hearing from current students can make all the di erence. How do the teachers and students interact? Are children engaged and happy to participate in lessons? Are student tour guides modelling behaviour you wish to see in your own child?

As you tour, evaluating school facilities, remember to do so firmly through the lens of your child. The state-of-the-art 5G astro pitch may look impressive, but it is only relevant if your child will actually use it. Independent reviews such as The Good Schools Guide, Tatler Schools Guide, Muddy Stilettos and Berkshire Mummies can also provide useful inside information. Ultimately, the right school is one where your child will feel known, encouraged, and inspired to thrive.

“Pangbourne opened doors I could never have imagined”

Legacy in THE

MAKING

From Pangbourne College to game changing bio-chemist

For Pangbourne College alumnus Tomas Tokovyi, education has been more than a path to academic success; it has been a life-changing journey of opportunity, discovery, and purpose. From arriving at the College as a bursary student in 2017 to becoming one of the few scholars in the world to receive both Oxford’s Clarendon and Cambridge’s Gates Scholarships, his story embodies the transformative power of education and the enduring values that define the Pangbournian spirit.

“The moment I received my bursary o er from Pangbourne, I knew my life was never going to be the same,” Tomas recalls. “It opened doors I could never have imagined and gave me the confidence to set ambitious goals – to tackle some of the biggest problems in healthcare.”

At Pangbourne, Tomas discovered not only his academic strengths, but also the power of teamwork and perseverance. He

found his stride on the water, joining the rowing team as a novice and progressing to the First Boat by Upper Sixth. “It taught me discipline, teamwork, and endurance,” he reflects. “Those lessons have stayed with me ever since.”

After excelling at A-levels in Biology, Chemistry, Maths, and Further Maths, Tomas pursued Biochemistry at the University of Bristol, graduating top of his year with First Class Honours. A scholarship to Oxford followed, where he completed an MSc in Genomic Medicine under the prestigious Clarendon Scholarship, before earning a Gates Cambridge Scholarship to study Bioscience Enterprise, a unique programme bridging science and business innovation.

Today, Tomas is part of a pioneering biotech start-up, helping to shape new approaches in drug discovery and healthcare technology. Even amid the challenges of the war in Ukraine, his home country, he has channelled his energy into supporting charitable initiatives while maintaining

his work in advancing genetic science.

As his career advances, he remains deeply connected to Pangbourne, returning to mentor current pupils and share his journey.

“Pangbourne taught me that success isn’t just about learning, it’s about applying knowledge meaningfully,” he says. “Legacy isn’t about status; it’s about contribution.”

His journey from bursary recipient to global scholar is a powerful reflection of how education can transform not just a life, but a community.

Now, the College is building on that same spirit of opportunity with ‘Transforming Futures’, a bold new campaign to change lives through the gift of a Pangbournian education. This initiative will provide life-changing Sixth Form boarding bursaries for young people from underserved communities and those with experience of the care system in West Berkshire, ensuring that many more stories like Tomas’s can begin.

Poetic licence

Earlier this year, Windsor Writers’ Group invited students from across the Royal Borough to take part in their annual Young Writers Competition. Open to children in Year 6 and above, budding writers were requested to submit a short story or poem demonstrating their masterful use of language, grammar and spelling. Last month, shortlisted writers were invited to attend an Award Ceremony at The Old Court in Windsor where the winners were announced and also given the opportunity to read their work aloud to the audience. Among the winners was Year 8 student, Julia (pictured below), from St George’s School Windsor Castle, whose poem “My Bonnie and Me” –a heartwarming tale depicting a day at the seaside with her dog – won first place in her age category.

“I am thrilled to see Julia justly recognised for her exceptional writing,” commented Kevin Wills, Head of Senior Prep at St George’s School Windsor Castle. “I look forward to reading more of her work in the future!” stgwindsor.org

Give it a try

On 1st October, Year 6 at Berkhamsted Prep had the exciting opportunity to play in a touch rugby tournament at the Saracens’ StoneX stadium. Playing in mixed ability teams, every pupil gave touch rugby a try at this exciting venue. Year 6 enjoyed a round robin tournament that tested their teamwork, adaptability and technical rugby knowhow. Newer players were supported by their teammates to learn the sport and win together.

Berkhamsted Prep was joined at this event by the Milton Keynes Preparatory School, whose teams challenged pupils to showcase their teamwork and adapt to new opponents. Pupils from Senior
