September!

Ilove this time of year. Cool nights… sweater weather…and let’s not forget about Nebraska football!

I became a Husker football fan when I was just 16 years old. My father, Big Al, was the one who led all six of us kids down this wild path. It was November 25th, 1971…Thanksgiving Day. Nebraska was ranked #1, and Oklahoma was ranked #2. The Huskers won 35 to 31. What a game! (Now known as the Game of the Century!)

I remember sitting and watching the Huskers with my whole family. I got so anxious! I remember getting up and going outside to walk around our house, simply to relieve the stress. Man, was that a game. Best I’ve ever seen. Yes, the Huskers had won National Championships before, but there will never be another game like that.

Sports are such an integral part of our lives. Whether you are a fan of football, baseball, basketball, soccer, or something else, sporting events bring us all together. I was talking with a doctor of psychology recently. She told me that when fans are in the stadium, they experience something called “shared emotional arousal.” This can actually lead to their heart rates matching one another’s rhythms. What this causes is a stronger feeling of connection and belonging as a group. I find that absolutely fascinating! It’s called “identity fusion.” My family was not in the stadium that day, but boy, were we ever connected. What an amazing touchstone memory.

Football was always my game. I know the language, the calls, the players, the penalties. Since I met my husband, Manny, I have expanded my sports knowledge to enjoy basketball and…yes…baseball! Years ago, in this column, I talked about how watching baseball was like “watching grass grow and paint dry.” No more! Manny has taught me all about the game. Frankly? I enjoy it as much as I enjoy football. It’s calmer. More complicated. It’s more like a chess game. I love it. Manny is from Los Angeles, so he has convinced me to join him in being a Dodgers fan. My brother, Tom, is a Cubs fan, so we have some good-natured teasing between us.

September is probably my favorite month. Back in the day, it was the summer months that I loved the most. Now, I enjoy sitting outside on a cool night, looking at the stars, sipping a glass of wine, and just chillin’. Life is great. We are so blessed.

I hope you have a great beginning to fall! We will catch up next month.

Back on Schedule—Let’s Eat!

Cowboy Grits

Prepare grits per box instructions (not advisable to use instant, but that is up to the cook). Pan fry the sausage of your choice (chorizo, pork, turkey, chicken), along with 1/4 cup each of chopped onion, green or jalapeño pepper, and diced tomato. Add spices you might like, such as cumin, salt and pepper, chili powder, or oregano. Add a bit of water or ketchup if the mix is too dry. Drain the sausage mixture. Add 1 cup of cooked grits to a bowl and top with 1/2 cup of the sausage mixture. Top with grated cheese, maybe a fried egg or cooked shrimp (your call). Serve with fluffy biscuits on the side.

The Big Omelet

Melt 4 Tablespoons of butter into a large skillet. Add the amounts and types of fillings that you want—ham, cooked bacon, diced onion, diced tomato. Sauté for 2–3 minutes. Whisk 4 eggs into a large bowl with 2 Tablespoons of water or milk. Pour over the sautéed veggies. Gently tilt the skillet around until the egg mixture is distributed. Sprinkle in 1/2 cup of grated cheese (your choice). Let the egg mix cook on medium for 4–5 minutes. Fold the omelet over and let it cook another minute or two, until the eggs are set. Divide into several pieces to serve. Sprinkle on more shredded cheese.

Slow Cooker Pork

Put the following ingredients into a zip-top bag: 1/4 cup of soy sauce, 1 cup of cola, 1/2 cup of brown sugar, 1 Tablespoon of Dijon, 2 Tablespoons of oil, 2 Tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce, 1/3 cup of ketchup or chili sauce, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder or 2 cloves of minced garlic, 1 Tablespoon of ginger, a small onion (sliced), and several dashes of thyme or rosemary or dill. Mix and then put a 3-pound pork butt or roast into the bag. Refrigerate overnight. Cook on low in

a slow cooker for 6 hours or until done. Thicken the sauce with a bit of flour and add some fresh dill. Serve with cooked cabbage or potatoes.

Labor Day BBQ Hammies

Cut 3 pounds of shaved deli ham into bite-sized pieces. Place the ham into a slow cooker. Pour in a 16-ounce bottle of your favorite brand of bottled BBQ sauce, 1/2 cup of brown sugar, a 12-ounce bottle of prepared chili sauce, 3 teaspoons of dry mustard (or 1 Tablespoon of bottled mustard), several dashes of black pepper, and a few onion slices. Mix together. Cook on low for 3 hours (stir several times). Serve on Brioche slider buns or Hawaiian rolls, with coleslaw on the side.

A Three-Bean Salad

Mix together 1/2 cup of olive oil, 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar, 1/4 cup of sugar, and salt and pepper as desired. Refrigerate while you are mixing the beans. In a large bowl, mix 1 can of drained kidney beans, 1 can of drained green beans (or 2 cups of fresh, trimmed and blanched), and 1 can of drained chickpeas or cannellini beans. Add 1/4 cup of chopped sweet or red onion. Pour the vinegar mixture over the

beans and mix well. Add salt and pepper to taste, along with any other herbs you like. Refrigerate for several hours before serving.

Fresh Chopped Veggie Salad

Mix together 1 and 1/2 cups of mayonnaise, 1/4 cup of sugar, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, and 1 Tablespoon of cider vinegar. Refrigerate the dressing while you’re combining the veggies. In a large bowl, mix together 3 cups of rinsed and finely chopped broccoli, 3 cups of finely chopped cauliflower, 1 cup of chopped celery, 1/2 of an onion (chopped), 2 cups of frozen peas (thawed), and 6 strips of crisped and chopped bacon. Pour the dressing on top of the veggies. Stir. Sprinkle in 2 Tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese and 3/4 cup of salted peanuts. Mix and refrigerate for several hours before serving.

Neeny’s

Big Party Meatballs

In a very large bowl, mix the following by hand: 3 pounds of ground chuck, a 12-ounce can of evaporated milk, 1 cup of oatmeal, 1 cup of cracker crumbs, 2 eggs, 1/2 cup of chopped onion, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1 teaspoon of salt, 2 teaspoons of chili powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper. Mix well and form into large meatballs. Place into a greased baking dish. In another bowl, mix 2 cups of ketchup, 1 cup of brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1/2 cup of sliced onion, and a dash of liquid smoke. Pour the mixture over the meatballs. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes, basting a few times.

Fresh Peach Pie

Put a premade or homemade pie crust into a pie pan. Mix 3 Tablespoons of soft butter with 1 cup of sugar and 1/2 cup of flour. Spread half of this mixture onto the crust. Peel and slice 6 fresh peaches and place the slices on top of the pie crust. Spread the rest of the sugar mixture over the peaches. Pour 1/2 cup of whipping cream on top of

the fruit. Place the second pie crust on top. Flute the edges, vent the center, and sprinkle a bit of sugar on top. Bake on a cookie sheet at 375 degrees for 1 hour.

Apple Bundt Cake

Peel and cut 5 apples into small pieces. Toss the pieces with 5 Tablespoons of sugar, 2 teaspoons of cinnamon, a dash of nutmeg, and 1 Tablespoon of lemon juice. Set aside. Combine 2 and 1/2 cups of sugar with 1 cup of vegetable oil, 4 eggs, 1/3 cup of orange juice, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. In another bowl, whisk together 3 cups of flour, 3 teaspoons of baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Mix the dry ingredients gradually into the wet ingredients. Pour into a greased and floured 12-cup Bundt cake pan (or tube pan). Bake at 350 degrees for 80–90 minutes, testing for doneness with a toothpick. Cool for 10–15 minutes and then invert and cool for another hour. Remove from pan and dust with powdered sugar.

Cherry Pie Bars

Mix 2 sticks of soft butter (unsalted or salted) with 1 and 1/4 cups of sugar—mix 3–4 minutes, until light and fluffy. Add 1 egg and combine. In another bowl, whisk together 2 and 1/2 cups of flour, 1/2 cup of old-fashioned oats, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the butter mixture. Remove 1/2 cup of the dough mixture and set aside.

Press the remaining dough into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Pour 2 and 1/2 cups of cherry pie filling on top of the dough. Crumble and drop the reserved dough mix over the top. Bake at 350 degrees for 30–35 minutes. Cool for an hour. Mix together 1 cup of powdered sugar, 2 Tablespoons of milk, and 1 teaspoon of almond extract. Drizzle over the cooled bars. Cut and serve with vanilla ice cream.

Brown is the New Black

Wearable Trends for Fall 2025

When it comes to fashion, “trend” can be a loaded word. We want to look fashionable, but some of the trendy pieces the fashion gurus are pushing—who can wear those, anyway? Today, let’s refresh our fall 2025 wardrobe with wearable trends for all of us, no matter what our shape, size, or budget. Finding your own personal style is really the key to fashion. Wear what makes you feel good. Then, for fun, you can incorporate bits and pieces of new trends.

Suede is on the top of the trend list this year, along with fabrications that look like suede but are washable. These suede-adjacent fabrics are so wearable, elegant, and affordable, especially in trendy brown tones from chocolate to cognac to sand.

Rich brown tones look amazing in a monochromatic head-to-toe finish. As slimming as black but richer and warmer, brown tones are easy to mix and match and work well with other popular fall color tones such as burgundy and blue.

Yearning to wear your favorite black this fall? Go right ahead—just pair it with a brown. It looks so elegant! Violet, red, and olive green will be popular color choices this fall, and they all work perfectly with brown tones. Brown will also be fun in patterns this fall, including leopard print, plaids, and polka dots.

Many of us consider color first when we’re building an outfit, but it’s just as important to consider texture. An interesting texture, like suede, velvet, or bouclé, immediately elevates your outfit by bringing flair to an otherwise standard style. A good rule of thumb is to treat texture like a pattern. Wear just one texture per outfit, keeping the other pieces smooth, simple, and luxurious.

presenting blazers with a nipped-in waist and dresses with a yoke detail or belted to define your shape. Layers are similarly slimmed-down. No more big bulky layers from past seasons. This year leans toward structured, simple lines in tailored shapes, which will be more flattering.

If you are new to layering, a good start would be to purchase a tailored wool vest. Layer it over a fitted top and it acts like a jacket while adding a third piece to your outfit. That third piece always makes for a finished and polished look.

Tailored pants will be an important part of this look! Look for a little heavier weight fabric with a loose but not sloppy fit. An elastic waist works for everyone, but a high-waisted pleated pant with a front zipper feels more modern and works well with this season’s tailored silhouettes. Remember to pair loose pants with a fitted top for a clean, fresh, put-together look.

One of my favorite trends this entire year has been matching sets. You can find matching tops and bottoms in sweater knits, workout attire, and elevated leisurewear. These sets are a godsend on a busy day—they’re so easy to throw on in a hurry! And when you need a break from the matching look, you can mix and match anything together.

Scarves trend in and out. They’re making a return this fall, but they are not what you’re used to! Forget the oversized wrap that you wound around your neck three times. Imagine a more sculptured look that is created with a small silk square. This brings drama, warmth, and a little Parisian flair to any outfit. It adds just enough interest without being too much. You can also accessorize your outfit with a belt to add that put-together polish we love. A brown belt is the most versatile. Add an interesting buckle to draw the eye to the center of the body. Try belting over your jacket or an untucked top. If you are not used to wearing belts and they feel too restrictive, try wearing the belt a little higher than your natural waist. This tiny adjustment makes a world of difference.

Gold is still the go-to metal for jewelry this fall but with a more sophisticated edge. Statement pieces are simple and structured— think of a wide cuff bracelet along with polished gold earrings. Simplicity is the key to wearing bold jewelry with a look of refinement.

Let’s go shopping! First in our own closets, to take stock of what we have, and then in our favorite boutiques, to bring some fresh air to our fall wardrobes. Our clothing should make us feel comfortable, powerful, and beautiful on these cool, pleasant days before the weather turns colder. Happy fall!

Tufly’s Shoe Center

A New Location for Happy, Healthy Feet

Remember running around as a kid in your $5 flip-flops? No more. If your “dogs” are barking, it is safe to say that the rest of you feels miserable, too. Feet are the foundation of our health—sore, aching, out-of-alignment feet can send that pain right up into your knees, hips, and back. If you are trying to stay active and keep a daily ritual of walking the recommended 5,000 to 10,000 steps, good shoes are one of the cornerstones of your fitness equipment. If those steps make you say “ouch,” it is time to visit Tufly’s Shoe Center in Omaha.

Tufly’s was located for many years at 169th and West Center Road in Omaha. The store recently moved east to 2525 South 133rd Plaza (that’s approximately at 133rd and Center). When you arrive at this conveniently located store, you will likely consult with Alan Tufly, though you may also see Alan’s wife Dorothy or his niece April. It’s a family business!

If you are a returning customer, you know that Alan keeps notes on your needs and previous purchases for reference. Yes, I mean actual old-school notes on your foot issues, your preferences, and what you have previously purchased. These notes allow him to quickly look at your history when you arrive so he can help you choose your next shoes.

As a repeat customer with foot challenges, I can personally attest to the attention that Alan will give you when you arrive at his store. Tufly’s Shoe Center has been in business in Omaha since 1993. “I’m pleased to know that I have now helped several generations of folks with foot pain…kids and grandkids of original customers,” says Alan.

I recently purchased several pairs of good walking shoes for an upcoming trip (which involved challenging routes on 16th-century cobblestone streets). The trip was a great success, thanks to my shoes. I appreciated the choices and solutions that Alan offered. Not everyone has specific needs when it comes to shoes, but if you suffer from any foot issues, Alan can help you find the best shoes for you. He can also guide you toward shoes that will help prevent injury, no matter what activities you have planned. He is a certified and accredited pedorthist, and he knows feet!

A pedorthist is trained in comprehensive foot care and knows how to use therapeutic footwear or orthotics to successfully treat foot pain. Dorothy Tufly describes them as “pharmacists for your feet.” Pedorthists have completed the necessary training to evaluate your foot needs and select proper footwear. They can evaluate your gait and your foot pain, and then figure out a treatment to alleviate that foot pain. Whether your pain is congenital, is caused by inflammation or injury, or results from a medical condition like plantar fasciitis (heel and mid-foot pain which may be accompanied by metatarsal pain) or diabetes, Tufly’s Shoe Center can help you.

Alan and Dorothy Tufly, Owners

The journey to healthy feet for life begins with a first step to Tufly’s.

A popular solution for balance or gait difficulties is custom-made orthotic inserts. At Tufly’s, your orthotics are molded to your own foot and are fit specifically for your needs. Orthotics can help customers who are suffering with pain in their hips, knees, back, as well as feet.

Tufly’s carries all styles of shoes, including athletic, casual, business, and special collections. Shoe manufacturers are listening to men and women alike who are asking for sturdy shoes that assist us daily in walking, and Tufly’s is current with styles and fashion. The office collections are especially popular. Customers like the great style, fit, and value for the money. Tufly’s carries a wide variety of styles to suit anyone who is serious about practicing good foot care.

Some of the brands available at Tufly’s include Saucony, Drew, Naot, Fidelio, and Dunham. If you are in the food industry, in education, or in health care, you are likely already familiar with Dansko, Brooks, and Finn. Finn Comfort’s Finnamic line of stability rocker sole shoes are particularly helpful to people who need relief from plantar fasciitis (pain in the metatarsal of the mid foot). No matter what the cause of your foot issues, the professionals at Tufly’s can help you find answers to the problem.

Feet change throughout our lifetime. If you have ongoing foot pain or you’d like to invest in some high-quality shoes, stop in and discuss your concerns with Alan Tufly. The journey to healthy feet for life begins with a first step to Tufly’s.

Tufly’s Shoe Center is located at 2525 South 133rd Plaza, in Omaha. The store is open on Mondays from noon to 4:30, Tuesday through Friday from 10:00-4:30, and on Saturdays from 10:00 to 3:00. For more information, find their website at tuflyshoecenter.com or call 402-614-2221.

“Dr Shnayder is amazing! I was sent to him originally for oral surgery and was pleasantly surprised to find that he does much more than dental. I had many questions and he took the time to answer every single one of them. He was so considerate as I was nervous for the procedure. He made sure I was comfortable and pain free. All the staff front and back office did the same. I felt very welcomed and well taken care of. I highly recommend!” — Angela D. Dental Implants • Tooth Extraction •

What’s in a Name?

Female Entertainers Who Changed Their Names

Something that has always intrigued me is celebrities who changed their names. In some cases, they change names for practical reasons—someone else in the Screen Actors Guild might already have the same name. In other cases, it’s personal. Sometimes, an actor goes by one name professionally and another one in her private life. Let’s take a look!

Marilyn Monroe, born Norma Jeane Mortenson

According to Time Magazine, the actress ditched her first husband’s surname (Dougherty) because a 20th Century Fox studio executive thought that there would be too many interpretations of its pronunciation. Norma Jeane suggested the last name “Monroe,” a name on her mother’s side of the family, while the studio exec handed her “Marilyn,” because Norma Jeane reminded him of 1920s Broadway starlet Marilyn Miller.

Alicia Keys, born Alicia Augello-Cook

The singer/songwriter told Newsweek that she wanted to change her last name to be better suited for the stage. She thought about taking on the title “Alicia Wild,” but her mom said no. “She said, ‘It sounds like you’re a stripper,”’ said Keys, so the singer considered a more musical moniker. “It’s like the piano keys. And it can open so many doors,” she explained.

Lady Gaga, born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta

Before she became an international pop star, Germanotta adopted her now-famous stage name, inspired by the 1984 Queen song “Radio Ga Ga.”

Miley Cyrus, born Destiny Hope Cyrus

Miley Cyrus’s stage title developed out of a childhood nickname. Apparently, as a child, Destiny Hope was always grinning, so her family called her Smiley, which evolved into Miley. She legally changed her name in 2008.

Natalie Portman, born Neta-Lee Hershlag

Born in Israel, Natalie Portman was given a traditional Hebrew name. Upon emigrating to the United States in 1984, her family changed the Hershlag surname to Portman, which was the actress’s maternal grandmother’s maiden name, and Neta-Lee became Natalie.

Diane Keaton, born Diane Hall

When you have a common first and last name, odds are there’s already someone in the Screen Actors Guild with that name. That’s what happened to the star of films like Annie Hall, The Godfather, and Something’s Gotta Give, so she traded Hall for Keaton.

Since working with Women’s Edition, my call volume has increased exponentially in just a matter of months. The customers reaching out to me fit my target market and are quick to share with me where they saw my ad. Women’s Edition took the time to get to know me and understand my needs in reaching out to, and connecting with, the right customer. Advertising in Women’s Edition is producing results even faster than expected!

Skadberg, 3 Day Kitchen & Bath Authorized Dealer

Whoopi Goldberg, born Caryn Elaine Johnson

While guest starring on a talk show, Whoopi Goldberg revealed that she got her stage name by, well, acting like a Whoopee cushion. “No one christened me that. I am Caryn, but I was a bit of a farter,” she joked. “The theaters I was performing in were very small, so if you were gassy you had to walk away farting. People would say I was like a Whoopee cushion. I was sometimes quite noisy, never offensive.”

Demi Moore, born Deme Gene Guynes

Most people don’t know that Demi Moore married rock musician Freddy Moore and took his last name when she was just 17 years old. The marriage lasted only a few years, but the actress decided to keep his surname as her stage name.

Helen Mirren, born Ilyena Lydia Mironoff

This British Dame was born to and English mother and a Russian father and was given a Russian name. Her father changed the family’s last name from Mironoff to Mirren in the 1950s. Ilynea then simplified her first name to Helen when she embarked on her acting career.

Julianne Moore, born Julie Anne Smith

Julie Anne Smith was told that she had to change her name because there was already a Julie Smith and a Julie Anne Smith in the Screen Actors Guild. “My dad’s name was Peter Moore Smith, and my mother’s name was Anne Smith, and I used both their names so I wouldn’t hurt anybody’s feelings.”

Mindy Kaling, born Vera Mindy Chokalingam

The actress’s parents chose Vera because it is a Hindu name. “Vera isn’t just an old Russian lady’s name; it’s an incarnation of a Hindu goddess,” Kaling reported. They never really called her Vera—Mindy has always preferred her middle name. When the actress was launching her career, she opted to shorten her last name from Chokalingam to Kaling.

Pink, born Alecia Beth Moore

The singer took her stage name from Steve Buscemi’s character Mr. Pink in the film Reservoir Dogs. She recalled to Q Magazine, “I actually ran into Steve Buscemi on the street in New York before my first album came out. I had Elton John glasses on, pink hair, and carried a Pink Panther toy. I went, ‘Steve! Mr. Pink! I’m Pink! Because of you! I’m going to have an album and you’re going to know who I am!’”

What do you think of these name changes? Would a Pink by any other name still be Pink?

Bolte Construction

Quality You Can Count On

You may think that deciding to embark upon a remodeling project is a big decision…and it is! But it is just the first in a long line of decisions, some of which may be new to you. What do you want to achieve with your remodel? Are you hoping to increase functionality, boost resale value, or just enjoy your space? Have you assessed the current space to identify what is already satisfactory and what needs improvement? Have you evaluated the existing structure to make sure the foundation and electrical work are adequate? Have you been able to determine a realistic budget that considers potential overruns? Have you factored in the financial and timeline costs of materials and labor permits?

Yep, the questions can really add up. To ensure success, you’ll need the guidance of an experienced construction company with a reputation for integrity and quality workmanship. You want to work with someone who can answer all your questions and bring your vision to life. You want Bolte Construction.

Bill Bolte, the owner and founder of Bolte Construction, has been in construction almost his entire life. Bill started Bolte Construction in 2003. He and his partner and co-owner, Geoff Amstutz, have made quite a name for themselves in Omaha. Whether you know what you want in a remodel or feel overwhelmed about the planning process, they can help.

Initially, Geoff will schedule a meeting with you to discuss your goals and your ideas. Geoff will provide as much or as little guidance as you need to fulfill your vision. When you are comfortable with his suggestions and your own ideas, he will give you a written budget. Once the budget is approved, he’ll set a start date.

Geoff understands that living in a home that is under renovation can be stressful. The team at Bolte Construction works with their clients’ schedules to minimize disruption. They promise open and consistent communication throughout the project, and they take pride in excellent clean-up every day they are on the job. Client comfort is a top priority!

Unlike Bill, Geoff did not start out in the construction industry. He began with a degree in biology. He planned to become a physical therapist but hesitated at the idea of more schooling and more school loans. Geoff met Bill’s daughter and started working with Bill, volunteering for Habitat for Humanity. As Bill took him under his wing, Geoff knew he wanted to join Bill eventually in his business.

Geoff has always loved learning new things, and he attests that Bill has been an outstanding teacher. It just so happens that Geoff married Bill’s daughter, and they now have two wonderful children. Geoff credits his father-in-law with being a major influence in his life. Geoff also credits his own father with teaching him the value of demonstrating integrity and honesty in everything that you do.

Geoff will provide as much or as little guidance as you need to fulfill your vision.

When asked what advice he would give someone interested in starting their own business, Geoff’s reply clearly reflects his own path. “Have an excellent mentor and do a ton of research in the field you are interested in,” he advises. Owning a business is no small task! “You have to stay motivated, organized, and on top of basically every task at hand. You will need to be trustworthy and have the ability to work as a team.”

Geoff wears many different hats, depending on the job site, but his main priority is always the quality of workmanship and the clarity of communication with clients. Your Lawn’s Last Hurrah!

The Fall Landscaping Checklist

Ah, fall, the time of year when the air feels crisp and smells like pumpkin spice lattes. While many people associate autumn with football and flannel, savvy homeowners know it’s also the perfect time for landscaping. Just when you think about winterizing the lawnmower, you might notice that your trees are shedding leaves faster than your dog sheds hair. It’s September! Now is the time to make a fall landscaping checklist.

Isn’t the growing season over? Actually, autumn is the beginning of next spring’s yard envy. September through November is the perfect time for planting new trees, shrubs, and perennials! In this article, we’ll dig into (pun intended) what to plant and not plant, the benefits of hiring a professional landscaper, and when to prune, protect, and then sit back to enjoy the rewards!

Fall isn’t just about apple pie and sweater weather. The temps are cooler, which means less sweat and fewer bugs outdoors. There’s more rainfall and less need for watering. When we’re winding down for winter, there’s less planting stress and better deals from landscape companies with off-peak pricing (along with more availability).

Hiring a landscaping company can be a great choice. They have the expertise and equipment to design, install, and maintain an outdoor space that will make you smile every time you pull into the driveway. When you’re choosing a company, consider their experience and signature style (and don’t even think about hiring someone who isn’t licensed and insured).

Ask to review their past projects and study online reviews. If you don’t know where to begin your search, ask friends and neighbors with gorgeous yards who they would recommend.

A good landscaper will create a personal plan, a sort of blueprint for your outdoor space. Get a detailed quote because budget transparency is vital. Plan how much you want to spend and what your vision is, then ask for a landscape plan before any dirt flies.

By now you know that the beautiful fall season isn’t just about hunting for pumpkins and going on haunted hayrides. It’s also about planning, planting, and pruning. The best fall projects include planting trees and shrubs. Autumn is often considered “tree time” because the cooler weather gives roots time to establish themselves before next summer’s heat kicks in.

September through November is the perfect time for planting new trees, shrubs, and perennials!

What kinds of trees to plant depends on where you live. In the Midwest, many homeowners have great success with maple trees, oaks, birches, magnolias, dogwoods, and evergreens. The cooler weather is also a happier time for your landscaper to build hardscapes such as patios, retaining walls, walkways, and even fire pits.

Trees aren’t all you’ll want to plant. Try cool-season veggies like kale, spinach, lettuce, or maybe a little garlic to scare away the vampires this Halloween. Other fall favorites include shrubs like boxwood, azaleas, and rhododendrons. Hydrangeas are a bit picky— they’ll need well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Your landscaper can help you choose the best spot in your yard and can tell you what needs to be added to your soil to help your shrubs thrive.

Consider perennials like peonies, daylilies, hostas, and coneflowers. You’ll enjoy them now and see them again when warmer weather returns! Don’t forget about spring bulbs. Plant your tulips, daffodils, crocuses, and hyacinths now. In the spring, you’ll look like a landscape genius!

If you tend toward the culinary, plant pots of parsley, cilantro, dill, chives, sage, thyme, and rosemary right outside the kitchen or wherever there’s easy access. Imagine the aroma of savory herbs over slow-cooked meals on a cozy fall evening. Just a pinch of sage for roast chicken, or rosemary sprinkled onto a pan of golden potatoes, will make the night enticing and vibrant for meals with friends and family. You can even move those herb pots inside once the frost hits. Imagine garden-fresh herbs on your counter at Thanksgiving!

Autumn landscaping needs to be navigated carefully. Not all plants like fall. Some plants thrive in warm soil and long growing seasons. Planting them in the fall would be like starting a diet during the holidays! It’s not the best timing, and it doesn’t set you up for success.

Stay away from planting annuals like marigolds, impatiens, and petunias. Save those tender morning glories for spring. Frost-tender plants are best for summer flings, not fall friends. Fall is too late in the growing season to plant warm-season veggies like tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers—they need sun and warmth. If in doubt, ask your landscaping pros for advice (or to do the planting for you)!

Now, if you really want to let your neighbors know that you have your life together, add fresh mulch to your fall checklist. Maybe you can skip spring mulching by mulching in the fall! Mulch keeps moisture in and temperatures steady, much like the down in a winter coat. And your beds will look so clean and polished!

Organic mulches like shredded leaves are popular, and shredded

bark, straw, and pine needles are all good choices. Your landscaper will know which types of mulch are best for which types of plants. For example, shredded bark adds curb appeal to front-yard beds, while pine straw adds support for plants that love acidic soil (azaleas, hydrangea, rhododendron).

A bonus idea for your fall planning? If you notice puddles forming every time it rains, you might have a drainage issue. You need to address that before the first freeze turns your yard into a dangerous skating rink. Your landscaper can recommend permanent solutions like re-grading or in-ground drains.

What about pruning? Timing is everything. If you trim at the wrong time, they might sulk all season. Ask for advice or let your nursery pros do the work.

Always cut back dead growth on hostas, peonies, daylilies, and phlox. Dead or diseased branches should be removed. Basically, anything that looks like a scary movie plotting against you needs to go. Some flowering shrubs like butterfly bushes and roses should be pruned as well. Ornamental grasses should be trimmed now unless you want to leave them for winter interest.

Don’t trim spring-flowering shrubs like lilacs, forsythia, or azaleas. Leave alone anything that has already set their buds. Trimming buds now is like canceling spring before it begins! Cold-climate roses can be lightly deadheaded if needed, but major pruning should wait until spring. Pruning evergreens now encourages new growth, which can be killed off by frost. Leave them alone or end up with crispy tips!

Once the planting and pruning is done, plants need to be tucked in for the winter. Remember, they’re not just decorations—they’re living, breathing creatures! Mulch will keep the soil cozy and

frost-resistant. Don’t bury the trunks, though—it’s a mulch bed, not a mulch coffin. Tree wrap or burlap can protect young tree trunks from frost and hungry deer. One last generous watering before the ground freezes helps to store moisture for the winter.

If plants are fragile, tall, and floppy, stake them for support. Don’t forget to move potted plants into the garage or under cover. When it’s cold outside, your favorite ceramic pots can crack faster than your phone after a drop and tumble.

The lawn needs preparation for winter, too. That means aeration. This loosens compacted soil, improves drainage, and makes room for better root growth.

Early fall is best for cool-season grasses, usually before the first frost. Overseeding is a good idea to fill in bare spots on the lawn, helping to prevent weeds. A thick layer of fallen leaves can suffocate the grass, so it’s important to rake or mulch them until they’re done coming down. Continue to water until the ground freezes. Fall is also a good time for weed control, but herbicides need to be applied with great care to avoid damaging other plants. Ask your landscaper about organic herbicides made from sources like vinegar, clove oil, or cornmeal.

Rake in the benefits of fall landscaping now! Fall is your yard’s last hurrah before the winter deep freeze. Take time to plan, plant, and prep for a landscape that will surprise and wow you in the spring. Book a spot on your landscaper’s schedule now to give your yard the autumn upgrade it deserves. Your future self will thank you in March!

Jay Moore Landscaping

Enhancing Your Outdoor Space

For Jay Moore, owner and president of Jay Moore Landscaping, custom landscaping is a beautiful way to add value to a property. He calls landscaping an “appreciating asset” for your home, and his goal is to make your outdoor living space a reflection of how you live, entertain, and relax.

The Omaha native learned the trade at the hands of his mother and father. “As a young boy, I would help around the business and learned about the work,” he recalls. “Mom and Dad taught me everything, and I loved every aspect of it.” As part of his formal education, Jay took business courses at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and attended Metro Tech for design and nursery classes. For 15 years, he helped run Moore’s Landscaping, the family business, until he established his own firm in 2005. His management responsibilities include staffing, bidding jobs, purchasing, equipment needs, and more.

The team at Jay Moore Landscaping prides itself on creating custom outdoor living spaces that combine beauty and best practices, color and texture, seasonal green spaces and feature-rich hardscapes— always with an emphasis on aesthetics, livability, and appeal. The workforce includes certified landscape designers, nurserymen, and arborists with a multi-year portfolio of experience. They are known for designing creative and distinct environments. Their next project could be yours!

“I work hard to meet each client’s unique needs,” Jay shares. “Here in the Midwest, we are lucky to enjoy our outdoor space for about eight months out of the year. I see outdoor space as an extension of the home and strive to give my clients that experience. Most outdoor areas are larger than your living rooms and should be enjoyed.”

The company’s services include exterior design, landscape installation, landscape management, dealing with water issues, renovations and updates, installing water features and fire pits, building patios and retaining walls, and much more.

Every Jay Moore Landscaping project is a custom project, created after collaboration between the designer and the client. “After a client contacts me, I meet with them at their home and we have a conversation about the outdoor space,” Jay says. “I ask questions that let me know how the homeowner likes to live and entertain.”

“Within about two days,” Jay continues, “I come back with a full-color design plan, complete with plant selection and material costs for the client to review.” The collaboration doesn’t stop there! “We go through everything. Our conversations are very interactive, and adjustments can be made. Once I have the go-ahead, there is about a 30-day lead time to start.”

The satisfaction that Jay feels at the completion of a job makes any challenges well worthwhile. He especially enjoys the moment when he sees the landscaping done—when it not only looks good but improves the home’s value. When it’s “everything the family wants,” Jay considers the job well done.

“If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day of your life.”

Jay’s clients are quick to praise his problem-solving skills. “Our backyard used to flood with rainwater due to bad grading,” recalls Holly Henning. “Jay suggested in-ground drains and other terrain and landscaping changes, which remedied our flooding issue. He also personally followed up throughout the job to ensure the work was completed properly and to his high standards. Now we can enjoy the rain without worrying about it flooding our yard or basement! I would recommend Jay Moore Landscaping without hesitation.”

For client Ann Kelly, the transformation of her outdoor space was truly appreciated, especially the water feature. “The group did beautiful work, and it was done according to the plan,” she says. “They were reliable and met all the deadlines. I highly recommend Jay Moore for both landscaping and hardscape.”

Jay has spent the last 35 years running a landscaping business, and he knows that his love for his work is a vital element of his success. “I tell new business owners that you must live your business and love what you do. I live and work my job 24/7. But my dad taught me a valuable lesson when I decided to embark on this adventure. He said, ‘If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day of your life.’ I feel that way every day.”

If you want to work with someone who is happy to show up for your project, reach out to Jay and his team at Jay Moore Landscaping. They will provide everything your outdoor space needs, from design to installation to maintenance. Let them make your yard a place to love!

The offices of Jay Moore Landscaping are located at 7607 D Street, in Omaha. You can reach them by phone at 402-981-7800. For more information and inspiring project photos, visit jaymoorelandscaping.com.

The Eyes Have It

Cosmetic Eye Enhancements

It’s said that the eyes are the window to the soul. Eyes reveal our emotions, our age, and, sometimes, even our health. Our eyes and our smile are the first things that people notice about us, and we want them to look their best! Most of us spend precious time applying makeup to the eye area on a daily basis. What would you do with that time if your eyes looked the way you wanted them to right when you woke up?

Eye enhancement procedures offer us that freedom. Permanent eye enhancements such as eyeliner and brow treatments are maintenance-free alternatives to conventional makeup and can last for years with proper care and occasional touch-ups. Other techniques, like microblading, threading, waxing, lash lifts, and last extensions require more frequent touch-ups but are also time-saving conveniences. Surgical eyelid lifts address drooping and puffiness. All of these techniques help define the eye area, creating the illusion of larger, brighter, and more youthful eyes.

Permanent makeup tattooing involves tiny needles and rotary penlike devices used to insert pigment into the skin. The pigment is tapped into the skin with a small instrument wielded by a licensed aesthetician or other trained professional. You can opt for soft or bold colors to line your eyes, define your brow, or add shading to your eyelid.

Eyeliner is a popular permanent makeup choice. We all know how difficult it can be to get that perfect outline with a liquid or pencil liner.

With permanent eyeliner, we can choose a bold or natural look. A procedure known as “tightlining” adds pigment between the layers of lashes to darken the lash line. It looks very natural. The procedure takes between one and two hours, and you should avoid applying eye makeup for a week afterwards.

Many people who are happy with their permanent eyeliner opt for eyelash extensions to match. Lash extensions can be natural or synthetic. Natural fibers such as mink, sable, or silk look very realistic, but synthetic lashes may be a better choice for allergy sufferers. Eyelash extensions are offered in a wide variety of lengths, curls, and fans.

It’s important to make sure that your technician uses a medical grade glue with no formaldehyde. The initial application takes about two hours, and touch-ups are required every couple of weeks, depending on how quickly your natural lashes shed. To extend the life of your lashes, avoid using oil-based eye products, cream-based eyeliners, and waterproof mascaras.

It’s a necessity, to keep young skin looking fresh and glowing and mature skin more vibrant and healthy. Our experienced estheticians can customize a facial treatment designed for your specific needs and skin type. Whether you want to minimize fine lines, diminish dark pigmentation, reduce breakouts, or just want to rejuvenate your skin, Faces Spa is the destination for facials. Call to schedule

If you don’t want the extra weight of extensions, consider a lash lift. For this treatment, a technician curls your lashes with a curling rod, then sets the curl with a chemical solution. No extra lashes are added on—the effect comes from lifting your lashes from the root. The lift lasts about six weeks, and you should wait 24 hours to apply mascara.

People who don’t like mascara at all can opt for eyelash tinting. Tinting provides a more defined and intensified look. No more mascara smudges or clumpy lashes! It’s perfect for enhancing light-colored lashes, and you can customize your color. Your aesthetician first separates the top and lower lashes, then applies a safe and natural dye upward from the root. The entire process takes less than 30 minutes. Afterwards, your lashes will be cleaned and brushed, and you’ll be on your way. Your color will last about four weeks.

To achieve a perfect brow, some of us turn to tweezers, pencils, or both. Microblading can give you an impeccably shaped brow. A trained technician uses a tiny blade that creates slices in the skin and deposits pigment. Microblading is popular with individuals who have suffered hair loss from medical treatments. Touch-ups are recommended every year or two years to maintain shape, color, and detail.

Eyebrow threading is an ancient procedure that originated in the Middle East centuries ago and is still used today. Threading is performed by an aesthetician using a double-stranded cotton thread. The thread is twisted around a single hair or an entire row; then the hair is pulled out from the root. This is less painful than tweezing and requires only monthly touch-ups.

Waxing is the fastest way to remove eyebrow hair. A warm or cold wax is spread over the hairs that need removing. A paper-like or cloth-like strip is then pressed onto the waxed area and ripped off, taking the unwanted hairs with it. Only the hairs that have been covered by the wax are removed, allowing your stylist to help you achieve the perfect brow shape. The procedure is usually repeated every six to eight weeks.

To keep your bright-eyed look, visit your favorite spa or salon. Consult a specialist today!

Steve Sheridan, Owner

The Stay-Home Spa Experience

Your Personal “Spathroom”

As homeowners increasingly seek to replicate the luxury hotel and resort spa experience in the comfort of their own homes, the demand to transform bathrooms into personal sanctuaries has taken the design world by storm. Merging a spa and a bathroom is its own new design concept with its own new name: the “spathroom.” The spathroom is where the ambience and comfort of a luxe spa meet the practicality of the traditional bathroom. Designed to elevate your athome luxury, a spathroom is more than just a functional space—it’s a lifestyle upgrade!

Transforming a bathroom into a therapeutic wellness retreat begins with incorporating spa-inspired amenities designed to elevate your daily wellness routine. A spa-like bathroom is a personal oasis, a place to bask in ultimate relaxation and re-charge after a long day. The delicate combination of water, steam, music, and ambient lighting is where the magic happens, bathing the senses in a luxurious multi-sensory experience. Luxe features such as rainfall showerheads enhance the experience as you surround yourself with water’s soothing effects.

The addition of a steam shower or a sauna (or both!) significantly enhances the relaxation factor! These two wellness practices complement each other to create a harmonious environment that promotes both mental and physical rejuvenation. Immersing yourself in the health and wellness benefits of sauna and steam bathing releases stress, offers escape from daily pressures, and rejuvenates the mind. It will improve circulation and stimulate blood flow while boosting

Interior Design | Furniture | Cabinets | Art | Accessories

energy levels. It will help muscle recovery, ease tension and soreness following workouts, and support the body’s natural detoxification process.

Elevate the bliss factor in your spathroom by tapping into chromotherapy, the practice of using color to heal and promote well-being. Chromotherapy suggests that color influences the body’s energy systems. Each color has a unique vibrational frequency that interacts with the body’s energy centers, helping to relieve stress and anxiety, improve sleep, and reduce pain and inflammation. Hues of blue and green (colors found so ubiquitously in nature) are believed to foster a sense of calm and serenity.

Further enhance your relaxation with aromatherapy. This is the practice of using the aromatic essence of plants, in the form of essential oils, to improve physical and emotional health. These oils can be applied to the skin through massage or lotions or added to steam showers and bath water.

Helping Children in Need Sleep Better.

All children deserve a safe, comfortable place to lay their heads. Across the US, too many boys and girls go without a bed—or even a pillow—to sleep on. These children end up sleeping on couches, blankets, and even floors. This can affect their happiness and health. That’s where Sleep in Heavenly Peace comes in. We’re a group of volunteers dedicated to building, assembling, and delivering handbuilt bunk beds to children and families in need.

In terms of layout and design, there’s a shift toward balancing the aesthetic benefits of large open showers to the more practical considerations of privacy and accessibility. Wet-room bathrooms have surged in popularity, especially in smaller spaces. Wet rooms include a shower and a free-standing tub inside the same glass enclosure.

Like an open-plan kitchen, with the walls removed to create one expansive sight line, a wet-room bath channels light and air for a luxurious feeling of space. This design makes the space appear larger and more inviting. These self-contained wet spaces ensure that any splashes stay in water-tight areas, making them ideal for small spaces while reducing the risk of slips and falls. Curbless wet areas transition seamlessly from the rest of the bath, creating a sleek open space that can be fully accessible for homeowners who wish to age in place and may someday be unable to step safely in and out of a deep tub.

Artistically Designed and Skillfully Crafted Custom Frames

If your ultimate dream spa includes indulging in a blissful bath, consider adding a free-standing tub. Wash away the day’s stress in style by soaking in the elegance of a sleek slipper tub or clawfoot classic. Aesthetically appealing, free-standing tubs add a sophisticated appeal to any bathroom, providing a wow factor that commands attention as the focal point of a room.

Keep in mind that installing a tub may require relocating plumbing or reinforcing the floor due to weight. Pro tip: A free-standing tub can also be difficult to get in and out of, as there is nowhere to place grab bars. Make sure the tub edge is wide enough to sit on and swing a leg over.

Once you’ve selected your spa features, adding natural elements such as vibrant greenery and natural stone and wood further enhances the spa-like feel. Incorporating smart technology ensures that each element is fully customizable, enabling you to conveniently tailor your experience to your exact specifications using an intuitive touchscreen control panel.

Whether you’re building a new home or planning a renovation, a spathroom can deliver the soothing and transformative experience you deserve. Start your journey to ultimate well-being today. Oh, and here’s the spoiler alert: You may never want to leave your new spathroom!

Welcome to Headache Season

Your

Guide to Fall Headaches

Most of us look forward to September. It is the beginning of sweater weather, football season, and pumpkin-flavored everything. For many people, however, this month also marks the start of headache season.

Why is September considered headache season? As summer turns into fall, changes in barometric pressure, the amount of daylight, and temperatures can disrupt your body’s natural rhythms, triggering headaches. Ragweed pollen and fall allergies can lead to sinus pressure, which often includes headache pain.

Additionally, back-to-school stress and changes in your sleep routine can also contribute to headaches. In some cases, reduced sun exposure can lead to lower vitamin D levels, and low vitamin D levels have been linked to a higher frequency of headaches and migraines.

Not all headaches are the same! There are four common types of headaches: tension headaches, migraine headaches, hypnic headaches, and cluster headaches.

Tension headaches are the most common type of headache. They typically feel like a tight band around your forehead or a dull ache on both sides of your head. They are often triggered by stress, muscle tension from poor posture, or eye strain.

Migraine headaches can cause throbbing pain on one side of the head and may also include nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and visual disturbances known as auras. They can be triggered by hormonal changes, stress, certain foods, or environmental factors

(including weather changes).

Hypnic headaches, sometimes called “alarm clock headaches,” wake you up in the middle of the night, often around the same time. They are considered rare and mainly affect people over age 50 years. They greatly disrupt sleep but do not typically indicate a serious condition.

Cluster headaches are excruciating, one-sided headaches around the eye that can occur in “clusters” over weeks, often at the same time each day or during seasonal changes. They may also cause eye redness or tearing.

Most headaches are primary headaches, meaning that another medical condition does not cause them. However, it is essential to know the type of headache you are experiencing so you can obtain proper treatment and avoid triggers. Migraine, tension, and cluster headaches fall into this primary category.

Secondary headaches happen because of an underlying issue, such as a sinus infection, medication overuse, dehydration, or, in rare cases, severe conditions like brain tumors or aneurysms. If your headache is sudden and severe, or if you experience weakness, confusion, changes in vision, or fever with it, seek medical attention immediately.

If headaches are significantly impacting your daily life, it is time to

see your doctor. Keeping a headache diary can help you and your healthcare provider identify patterns and triggers by tracking when your headaches occur, as well as what you ate, your stress levels, sleep patterns, and the weather on those days.

Depending on your symptoms, your doctor may schedule a neurological examination or order imaging tests, such as an MRI or CT scan, to rule out secondary causes. You may also be referred to a neurologist or headache specialist if your headaches are severe or frequent.

Treatments for headaches can include both conventional and holistic approaches. Overthe-counter medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help with tension headaches, while prescription medications may be used for migraines. For cluster headaches, oxygen therapy or preventive medications may be prescribed. For hypnic headaches, treatment might include caffeine or other specific medications.

Some people find relief with holistic approaches, such as taking magnesium and riboflavin supplements; trying acupuncture, biofeedback, or cognitive behavioral therapy; or practicing mindfulness meditation and relaxation techniques to help lower stress. Check with your doctor before adding supplements to your routine.

Lifestyle changes can also help. Regular exercise (about 30 minutes on most days) helps reduce stress and releases endorphins, which may help prevent headaches. Staying hydrated is essential, as dehydration is a common trigger.

Eating a balanced diet with regular meals and limiting foods that may trigger migraines, such as aged cheese, processed meats, alcohol, and artificial sweeteners, can help reduce headache frequency. Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule and managing stress through activities like yoga, journaling, or meditation can also help prevent headaches.

If you experience persistent or severe headaches, start with your primary care provider. If your headaches are frequent, severe, or evolving, you may be referred to a neurologist. If allergies or sinus issues are suspected, consulting an allergist or an ENT specialist is the best course of action. For chronic headaches that affect your quality of life, pain specialists or behavioral health providers can assist with lifestyle modifications and pain management techniques.

Stop “just living” with headache pain. Discover and treat the type of headaches you have and start enjoying everything fall has to offer!

Dan’s grandparents owned a flower shop for over 40 years, and he had many opportunities to witness how hard work and ethics grow into a successful business. It is obvious when speaking with Dan that he carries that work ethic with him continually. Dan strives to be the best in every project and in every aspect of his business.

When asked about the biggest influences in his life, Dan smiles. In addition to his parents and grandparents, he credits his wife, Peggy, as a major influence on how he conducts his life and his business. Peggy always stands by his side and encourages Dan. She has always believed in his vision of what Claxton Fireplace Center could be.

The way that Dan approaches the inevitable challenges of running a business is inspiring. “I have always seen problems or challenges as opportunities. It is not realistic to expect things to always run smoothly,” he notes. That said, he acknowledges that working outdoors can certainly be challenging when it comes to the weather. “Sometimes we have to reschedule our project due to rain or snow, but I have a terrific team, and we always find a way to make things work for our clients. There is always a solution to every challenge—you just have to be creative and make good decisions.”

One thing that hasn’t changed over the years is how much Dan loves hearing from satisfied customers. “When they thank us for the work we did and say how the process was so smooth and efficient, that is very gratifying,” he says. He also loves being a part of his team’s professional growth. “I also love seeing my employees grow from not knowing really anything about fireplaces into seasoned professionals. It is very rewarding to see that transformation. Essentially, transformation is rewarding in all of its many forms.”

For business owners just starting out, he advises to “be passionate about what you do and do it to the best of your ability. Realize that you are not the big deal, and put the needs of others ahead of your own. Love God, love your family, love your work, and love others by serving them. This is the recipe for purpose, meaning, and satisfaction in life.” Pretty good words to live by, I would say.

If you want a new fireplace or to upgrade an existing fireplace, you simply must check out what Claxton Fireplace Center can do for you. They can do fireplace makeovers to upgrade an existing fireplace into the fireplace of your dreams. (They can also inspect your chimney.)

They can do new construction to add a custom fireplace to your home. They offer awnings and solar shades to bring shade and comfort to your outdoor living spaces. They can extend your entertaining space outdoors by adding everything from a simple fire pit to a full outdoor kitchen.

To see their designs in person, visit their showroom at 3125 Oak View Drive, Suite 103, in Omaha. You can make an appointment to discuss your project with Dan by calling 402-491-0800 or visiting online at claxtonfireplace.com. As they say at Claxton Fireplace Center, you’ll find “Answers For All Of Your Burning Questions.”

Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

Early

Screening Saves Lives

Prostate cancer is the second most prevalent cancer in men (after skin cancer). If you have men in your life, it is wise to be aware of preventive measures, early detection, and latest treatments for prostate cancer. Though one of the most prevalent cancers in men, it is highly treatable, especially in its early stages.

Many of us are only dimly aware of the prostate’s main function. It is a walnut-sized gland that is part of the male reproductive system. It is located below the bladder and surrounds the urethra, which carries urine and semen out of the body. As such, the prostate can cause urinary symptoms if it becomes enlarged.

Its purpose is to help provide some of the fluid that carries sperm from the testicles, and so it is crucial for reproduction. An enlarged prostate is common in males as they age. It is not cancer and does not increase the risk of cancer, but it is serious if it causes blockage of the urethra.

Prostate cancer becomes more prevalent with age, usually affecting men 55 years and older; 66 years is the average age for diagnosis. Race is also a risk factor for prostate cancer. Black men have the highest incidence of prostate cancer in the United States; Asian American men have the lowest.

Because the primary risk factors (age, family history, and race)

are out of a person’s control, it’s difficult to prevent prostate cancer. Though obesity has also been identified as a potential risk factor, the exact cause of prostate cancer is often not known.

Most of these cancers grow slowly, but a small percentage can grow quickly and spread to other organs. The best bet right now is to undergo regular screening before symptoms appear.

Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is a protein made by the prostate that is typically present in small amounts in the blood. The level of PSA in the blood can be identified with a simple blood test. In general, the probability of having prostate cancer increases as the level of PSA goes up.

A biopsy may be ordered based on an elevated PSA level. A rectal exam can sometimes find cancer even when PSA levels are normal, so it is often included along with PSA testing. Imaging is another tool in detecting prostate cancer. One may be referred to a urologist to discuss options or for additional testing.

Health professionals recommend screening at age 40 if one is at high risk for developing prostate cancer. Age 45 is recommended for those at average risk. If prostate cancer is discovered at an early stage, more treatment options are available. Screening is especially important for those with a close blood relative who has had prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is categorized in a couple of different ways, based on how aggressively it grows or where it has spread. Staging is vital in selecting the best treatment and in estimating one’s survival rate.

In general, with stage 1 and 2, cancer has not spread outside the prostate. In stage 3, it has spread only to nearby tissue. Stage 4 indicates cancer that has spread to lymph nodes or to distant parts of the body.

The good news is that prostate cancer has a high survival rate. Because screening leads to early detection and testing can determine aggressiveness, treatment can be remarkably successful.

An older man with a low-risk cancer may choose no treatment initially, instead opting for regular monitoring. For intermediate to high-risk cases, surgery or radiation may the best options. Hormone therapy can reduce the size and slow the growth of prostate cancer, but it is not a cure.

Chemotherapy is used more often for advanced risk or when cancer has recurred. Immunotherapy is one of the newer treatments. Ultrasound is sometimes used to destroy cancer in low to intermediate risk cases that meet certain criteria.

With localized prostate cancer, the fiveyear survival rate is 99 percent. However, some warning signs must not be ignored, even if your guy is younger than 40 or his PSA screening was negative. Blood in the urine or semen should never be overlooked. Other concerning symptoms are difficulty urinating, pelvic pain, frequent urination, or a weak urine stream.

For prostate health and overall health, it’s always best to maintain a healthy weight by eating a good diet and getting regular exercise. One of the reasons that prostate cancer can often be successfully treated is that it is so often identified in its early stages, when treatment options abound. This September, encourage the men in your life to be screened for prostate cancer.

The One Big, Beautiful Bill

What Does It Mean for Your 401(k)?

The stock market loves good news and hates bad news. Not too surprising, right? The problem is that it has trouble deciding which is which. It is not uncommon for the investing public to view a data point as favorable and the market to see it as catastrophic. The reverse is also common. The market also reserves the right to pause midstream and change its mind, without prior notice to the investing public.

Recently, the United States Congress passed what is commonly referred to as “The One Big, Beautiful Bill.” It covers a sweeping number of topics that will affect the trajectory of our society and economy for years to come. Among its provisions are the government’s tax and spending guidelines for fiscal year 2026. It makes permanent the tax cuts enacted during the first Trump administration in 2017, raises the debt ceiling, and reduces staffing levels for a significant number of federal agencies.

As with all things political, the public and media appear to be sharply divided over it. Many of the issues addressed in this bill are social and political in nature and are of minor concern to the market. However, there are two areas covered in the bill that have significant implications for the market’s future: energy and interest rates.

The bill does not directly address interest rates, but the consequences of its projected addition of $3.7 trillion to the national debt cannot be ignored. The additional debt service will force the Treasury to go into the bond market to borrow the dollars necessary to pay for items that exceed those covered by tax revenue.

This increased demand for borrowing has the potential to increase interest rates. This would require the private sector to pay more for capital to grow their businesses and would increase the headwinds to national economic growth. This means lower economic growth, lower corporate profits, slower stock market increases.

The flip side is that increased government borrowing could trigger the Fed to lower rates to decrease the cost of government debt service—a plus for both economic and stock market growth. The jury is still out on how the market will respond to the pending interest rates swings.

The bill also contains two energy-related items with significant stock market implications. The most immediate and impactful are provisions that reverse the previous administration’s restrictions on gas, oil, and coal production on federal land. It also completely eliminates the royalties imposed on the limited number of producers who were allowed to operate on federal land. The stated objective of these provisions is to return the United States to energy independence. The precise impact this will have on energy prices remain to be seen. For the present, the consensus is that they will decline significantly.

The stock market’s initial response to this legislation has been favorable. Since the bill’s passage, the prices of oil- and energy-related stocks have risen by double digits. It appears that the market also believes that a reduction of energy costs will be reflected in the earnings reports of companies across the board. (An important caveat to

this observation is the potential negative impact of the Administration’s ongoing tariff policies.)

The bill phases out investment and production credits for wind and solar energy programs that have allowed the renewable energy industry to grow in size and revenue. In spite of their activity expansion, all these programs have proven to be commercial failures and a constant drain on government resources and revenue.

The bill also eliminates the tax incentives to buy electric vehicles and reduces the rollout of federally mandated emission standards on all gas-powered vehicle sold in the United States. This provides a major reprieve to the big three US auto manufacturers who have suffered significant losses in their electrical vehicle divisions. Couple this with the bill’s incentives to the auto industry to return production to American soil, and you end up with a smaller trade deficit, which adds positive numbers to the GDP.

The response of the 90 million Americans with 401(k) plans to this hazy forecast could be one of confusion and despair. But history tells us that the American economy has faced many uncertain times. And each and every time, it has emerged bigger and stronger.

If the stock market’s initial response to the One Big, Beautiful Bill is negative, those 401(k) participants who are index fund investors will be able to buy additional shares at reduced prices and lower their average cost. If the market’s response is positive, the total value of 401(k) index fund portfolios will increase, and investors will have the option to buy at the higher prices or remain on the sidelines.

Summer’s End September in Nebraska

In Nebraska, September is the beginning of summer’s end. The flowers fade. In exchange, we are rewarded with the breathtaking beauty of later sunrises and earlier sunsets. The deciduous trees put on their displays of orange, gold, and rust-colored leaves. Squirrels are seen scampering about, picking up the fallen acorns, preparing for the colder months ahead. It’s our signal of summer’s farewell.

The hum of combines and tractors bringing in the harvest fills the air. The last of the garden produce is being harvested and stored by freezing or canning. For some families, this is a community affair. What fun it is to talk, laugh, and work together. In the right company, what might otherwise be a chore seems more like a party.

As summer bids us farewell, so do our youth as they head back to the classroom. Kindergarteners nervously let go of a parent’s hand as they enter their new environment. Young adults head off to college as they begin to chase their dreams. The possibilities are endless as knowledge is gained, new arts are found, new friends are made. How fortunate the student who seeks knowledge and finds encouragement from both home and school.

What plans are in store for your family this September? Will there be a family celebration, a wedding, a trip just for the fun of it, a new baby? Our Septembers are filled with our grandchildren’s birthdays. At one point, my husband said, “No more births in September—I can only eat so much birthday cake!” The next year, two more joined the September team.

September on the farm has a different atmosphere than in urban neighborhoods. The corn and beans are being harvested. We see what the yields are as the crops are put in the bins. The last cuttings of alfalfa are being baled before the crop goes into dormancy for the winter months.

The activity is endless! The farmstead is filled with the sound of the equipment leaving in the early hours of the morning and returning late after the sun sets. You can always hear the whir of the dryer fans on the bins, pulling the moisture out of the grain so it will store without damage. The farmstead is filled with the sweet smell of the harvested grains.

There is a mournful cry from the calf pens. Calves born in the spring months spent the summer frolicking in the pastures under the care of their mothers. Now, it’s time for the mothers to rest and prepare for the next calving season. For the calves that have matured, it is an unhappy adjustment. The pens are a strange environment. Soon, their curiosity draws them to the grain in the feed bunks and the hay in the feeders. They settle in and are content. Their calls for their mothers no longer ring across the pens.

We prepare for a slower pace of work, getting settled for the winter months ahead. As the cold approaches, we put away the outdoor furniture that we so enjoyed sitting on, watching the falling rain or the sparkling fireflies. The lawn and garden tools need to be cleaned and repaired so they will be ready when spring comes.

Once the last field is harvested, the farm equipment will also be stored away. A jolt of happiness becomes a part of the farmer and his family as the doors to the shed close on another successful year.

Summer is over, and it’s time to rest. The bare branches show their strength as they stretch skyward. As the morning fog lifts, we feel a sense of peaceful, sheltering comfort.

What an exciting and rewarding state Nebraska is, with its beautiful changing seasons. The fresh blooms in the spring give way to the green fields of summer and the golden waves of grain and tall corn in the fields. The hues of green, gold, and rust of autumn then lead us to the snowy blanket of winter. In every season, Nebraska surrounds us with a living canvas, a landscape that unfolds like a vibrant masterpiece, reflecting the abundant life that resides in this state.

To the casual traveler, Nebraska may seem lacking in scenery. After all, there are no mountains or oceans. No, Nebraska’s beauty is quieter, more subtle. It’s one you notice when you slow down and really view the land. The rolling hills of grass in the western sandhills, the waving ocean of yellow wheat fields, and the corn plants, standing in neat rows that stretch as far as the eye can see.

Nebraska, thank you for your beauty. September, thank you for the harvest and the colorful goodbye to summer.

Pet Pain Awareness Month

Pay Close Attention!

Pet pain can be frightening for pets and their owners alike. Pets cannot self-report their pain, so it’s up to you to notice when your beloved dog or cat starts behaving in an unusual way. Of course, if your pet seems to be experiencing an emergency, head straight to the vet or animal hospital. But if something just seems a little “off” about their demeanor, it’s time to pay close attention.

Your pet has many ways of signaling you when they are in distress. One sign of a problem is a sudden distaste for food that they previously enjoyed. Another is not wanting to play a favorite game.

It’s all about whether the behavior you’re seeing is abnormal for your pet. Pain can appear as restlessness in a pet who is usually calm, cool, and collected. Conversely, if your pet is usually eager for a walk or a play session but now refuses these favorites activities, you know something is wrong.

Some pets lose control of bladder or bowels. They may be continually licking or chewing at a paw or any body part. A limp is a sure sign that something hurts. Other signs of pain include whimpering or crying, even when asleep.

Pain behaviors are similar for dogs and cats. One that is more particular to cats is matted or tangled fur. Since cats do a lot of their own grooming, any signs that they can’t reach the places they normally reach can indicate that they’re in pain.

Sometimes, such changes in your pet’s behavior may seem like signs of aging…and maybe they are! But your vet needs to know what’s been

happening and how long it’s been going on to determine if the changes signal a problem. Make written notes of any change in habit, behavior, or disposition. Send your vet your notes or even a short video that highlights the issue. This gives your vet a head start on the situation before you arrive.

It is imperative to remember: Do not give your dog or cat any medicine or pills designed for human consumption. Human medications are harmful for pets. They will make any problem worse or even unsolvable.

Veterinarians, on the other hand, have pharmaceutical options for treating pets who are in pain. For acute pain, vets might prescribe NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), laser treatment, opioids, or gabapentin. Gabapentin is not a narcotic or an opioid. Some states have reclassified it as a Schedule V controlled substance. It is a fairly new tool for veterinarians.

Also designed for dogs’ and cats’ immediate pain relief:

Women’s Edition has been a great tool for our business. With their guidance on graphics and wording, we are getting calls and emails from great fitting customers, so the message is clear in regard to the problem we solve. We have been able to reach new customers on an individual basis. We are so happy to have formed this relationship. It helps us help our customers transition into senior living with a lot less stress!

corticosteroids and alpha-2 agonists. CBD is used in some cases but is still being researched. Since many of these medications can have side effects, both you and your vet need to continue to monitor your pet’s behavior. It is important to keep the channels of communication with your vet open.

Once pain is eased, remember that your pet is most comfortable at home. You can treat chronic pain with less stress there. Osteoarthritis is a fairly common cause of chronic pain, especially in older pets. For chronic pain that stems from osteoarthritis, your vet might suggest a thicker bed pad, controlled walks rather than runs, physical therapy, gentle massages, and low level laser therapy. A bit of gentle cuddling or brushing is also beneficial.

Another approach that some licensed vets offer is holistic medicine. Holistic medicine views the body as an interconnected whole, treating the underlying causes as opposed to symptoms. It has practices designed for cats and dogs.

Holistic practices include acupuncture and herbal medicines, either in addition to pharmaceuticals or as standalone treatments. Some vets have studied holistic approaches and include them in their veterinary practices. Regular massage, also a part of holistic medicine, is similar to the petting that our dogs and cats already enjoy. It can include manipulating appendages. Special care is needed around any injuries.

Herbal medicine, a more familiar holistic approach, has licensed practitioners. Many culinary herbs are safe for dogs and cats, including basil, catnip, cilantro, parsley, rosemary, sage, turmeric, and valerian. However, many herbs are toxic for our pets, including mint, alliums, lavender, marijuana, marjoram, and oregano. Don’t dose your pet yourself; check with your vet for guidance.

If your pet is in pain, it’s worth investigating a holistic approach, especially if pharmaceuticals have resulted in adverse effects. Talk to your vet before you offer any treatments to your pained pet. If you choose holistic treatments, working with experienced practitioners is the safe way.

No matter which system or combination of systems you choose to relieve your pet’s suffering, please rely on your vet’s knowledge and experience to bring about a successful outcome.

The Green Thumb

The Mysterious Black Dahlia

The Rarest of Beauties

If you have ever seen a black dahlia in a floral arrangement, I bet you were enchanted by its beauty. The black dahlia is unique among all the thousands of dahlia varieties and is just something profoundly stunning. This gorgeous and breathtaking bloom has a deep and dark maroon color that can actually be mistaken for the color black.

Obviously, the black dahlias belong to the family of dahlias (there are roughly 20,000 different varieties of dahlia flowers), but only 10 to 20 of these varieties are close to black in color. Over the years, flower breeders have selectively chosen different colors of the dahlia flower for breeding. They create the deepest and darkest hue to make “black” dahlias appear truly black.

The Veronne’s Obsidian dahlia is closest to the color black. It has windmill-like petals and a sunny yellow center that contrasts the deep hue of the petals. The Black Jack dahlia is a classic variety with velvety blackberry-colored petals in a full, round form. Because of their deep, dark color, these flowers are a popular choice for gothic parties or gardens with dark themes. Now, I love black dahlias and I love to include them in my garden, but I have never thought of them as sinister…to each his own, I guess.

The Black Wizard dahlia is characterized by its dark, purplish-black center. The large double bloom is very much a statement piece and can add some real pizzazz to a floral arrangement. Fidalgo black dahlias are deep burgundy-red blooms that resemble the color black with their beautiful, finely cut petals. There is also the Black Embers dahlia, which has an iridescent quality, and the Gideon dahlia, which has large, ruffled petals that have a deep maroon hue. You get the picture—they’re very, very dark!

We know that flower breeders are selecting blooms for their dark color on purpose, but how do they get so dark in the first place? The flower color in dahlias is determined by a mixture of plant metabolites called flavonoids. These flavonoids, known as anthocyanins, are also responsible for the rich color of blueberries, blue corn, and blackberries. Compared to most dahlia varieties, black dahlias have huge amounts of anthocyanins, which gives them their deep, dark hues.

The name Black Dahlia also has some sinister connotations which you may or may not know. In 1947, a woman was found murdered in a Los Angeles neighborhood. The young woman turned out to be a 22-year-old Hollywood hopeful named Elizabeth Short, later dubbed the “Black Dahlia.” The press called her that because of her rumored penchant for sheer black clothing and the Blue Dahlia movie that was out at the time.

In support of the LA police, the FBI ran records checks on

potential suspects and conducted interviews across the nation. The murderer has never been found, but the legend of the Black Dahlia continues. Her life and death have been the basis of numerous books and films, and her murder is sometimes cited as one of the oldest unsolved cases in Los Angeles.

I mention this crime because the black dahlia has carried a strangely unique and somber message through the years. Their blooms are sometimes associated with sadness and mourning, or even darkness and betrayal. However, I refuse to see them that way.

Other people feel that the black dahlia is associated with passion, power, and ambition. I think that is the more optimistic way to look at these outstanding blooms and that is how I will continue to see them! I guess it is all about your perspective, but I have a very hard time seeing any flower as a symbol of darkness. Flowers are one of the most joyous gifts we have on this planet, and that is how I will continue to see this one-of-a-kind beauty.

I am instantly attracted to unusual flowers, so of course I would love these black beauties, but to be perfectly honest, I love any kind of dahlia! There are almost 20,000 varieties of dahlias, and you cannot go wrong with any of them. They are hardy and showy and they bloom over and over if you deadhead them.

If you prefer a lighter-colored variety, consider the Café Au Lait dahlia, which is often referred to as the queen of all dahlias. It has a soft peach color that is absolutely breathtaking. A classic ruffled variety is the Labyrinth Dahlia. It is peachy pink and stunning. I cannot help but imagine how these dahlias in the peach-colored family would look with some stunning black dahlias mixed in. Perhaps I’ll find out in my garden next year!

West-Coast Whale Watching

Make It an Adventure!

If you have ever had the experience of seeing a whale breaching or swimming up close, you know that the excitement is contagious! Being out on the water and seeing whales, dolphins, sea mammals, and pelagic birds can be so exhilarating and memorable. There are plenty of opportunities for some great whale watching when traveling along the West Coast of North America, from Alaska to Mexico and beyond. Let me break it down so you can decide on your next whale watching adventure destination.

Whales that migrate along the Pacific coast include grays, blues, humpbacks, orcas (killer whales), minke, and fin whales. Are you already booked on an Alaskan cruise or Hawaiian vacation? If you have summer Alaskan cruise plans, you are golden. Summer is peak season for whale watching there.

Spotting humpback whales can be the highlight of a Hawaiian island trip taken between December through April. If you know what to listen for, you can even hear them singing underwater.

During the winter breeding season, humpback whales migrate to the warm waters of Hawaii from Alaska, with a swim of about 6,000 miles one way. Humpbacks have one of the longest migrations of any mammal! They go to all the islands in Hawaii, but a tour company will take you to the best viewing spots.

Actually, many cruise port locations can be an excellent option for spotting these majestic marine mammals. I recently went whale watching in Vancouver, British Columbia. A short distance from the port over to Granville Island brought me to Prince of Whales Adventures.

This whale watching tour company has a year-round whale sighting guarantee…not to mention very comfortable catamaran boats with indoor and outdoor space, free coffee and cocoa, and professional photos taken for you so you don’t miss a thing. They tour from Vancouver, Victoria, and Telegraph Cove.

Cruising the Salish Sea searching for whales brings gorgeous views all around. We also saw sea lions, bald eagles, and seals. Their onboard marine expert shared fun facts, explained points of interest along the ride, and spotted the whales for us. Knowing that their photos were going to be a lot better than I could ever take helped me to enjoy myself and just focus on being in the moment, not on my smartphone.

The San Juan Islands have been on my wish list for whale watching for quite a while. This brought me to my next whale watching outfitter, Blue Kingdom Tours, located in Anacortes, Washington. I booked the “Whale and Wildlife Adventure” tour on the Sounder. This was a zodiac-style boat that held 17 passengers. It was fun and fast! Blue Kingdom did a great job ensuring that everyone was completely comfortable before we even got on the boat. All the passengers were fitted with cruiser suits, hats, and gloves. They even had goggles and binoculars to borrow.

We had what we needed to keep us warm and dry, so everyone had a great time. The highlight, of course, was when we spotted and got to follow alongside several pods of orcas! It is impossible not to have a big smile on your face once you spot the whales.

Will you be making your way south to Los Angeles anytime soon? Long Beach is a great destination for a whale-watching trip any time of year. I took the “Dolphin & Whale Adventure” with SoCal Whale Watching and embarked on a 6-passenger zodiac-style boat. I was surprised at how smooth the ride was—it felt like a VIP private tour. Captain Steve and Naturalist Jessamy shared local information and whale spotting experiences. Although whales are the main attraction, the hundreds of dolphins swimming right under, in front, and beside the boat really steal the show! You cannot beat their convenient location, right near the Aquarium of the Pacific (which I also highly recommend—don’t miss the shark lagoon!).

And now we’ve made it south to Mexico. Get to Magdalena Bay for amazing whale watching tours that take you so close you can touch the gray whales. Or take a once-ina-lifetime tour to swim with whale sharks in the Sea of Cortez.

If whale watching has always been on your list, consider one of the trips I’ve described to get up close and personal with these beautiful creatures. If you already have a vacation planned somewhere on the West Coast, have your travel agent book a whale watching tour for you and your group. They can choose whatever type of vessel is the most comfortable for you. Extend your trip to add this adventure! I guarantee that you won’t regret it!

No More Wishin’

Set Your Boundaries—and Keep Them

“Daring to set boundaries is about having the courage to love ourselves even when we risk disappointing others.” — Bréne

How good are you at setting boundaries? It’s intriguing to me how challenging this seems for so many women in my generation. Most of us were brought up to keep quiet and make sure everyone else was happy. Making the decision to respect ourselves enough to set limits on how we are treated can feel very scary. How will my friends react? My coworkers, my family, my children, my husband? Isn’t this going to rock the boat? You’d better believe it will.

“Don’t be afraid to rock the boat. If someone falls out, then they weren’t meant to be in your boat.” — Anonymous

Learning how to set boundaries…and then following through with them…will definitely change your life. So, how do we do it? It’s important to understand that our boundaries are about what WE will do, how WE will react. We cannot control anyone else in our lives. We can only control how WE react.

When we set boundaries, it is important to be very clear and concise in our communication. We have to speak from our heart and let the other person know that this is about us, and the boundaries that we are setting. We are not trying to change them. We are not asking for permission. We simply are drawing a clear line in the sand.

“Stop asking why they keep doing it and start asking why you keep allowing it.” — Anonymous

Next, it has to be very specific…not broad. We cannot include multiple scenarios in one boundary. We have to follow through and be consistent with the boundaries that we have set. As a very wise woman recently told me, “It’s easy to set boundaries, but it is very challenging to follow through on them.”

“No is a complete sentence.” — Anne Lamott

What I have learned is that, in the beginning, you are going to fail. You will revert to the old patterns of caving in. You’ll hope that the other person changes. You’ll put it off, waiting for a “better time.” You’ll hope it will all go away.

Guess what? It won’t. Remember: You cannot change them; you can only change yourself. With time and experience, you will learn how to overcome your challenges and get your message across. All the wishin’ and hopin’ and prayin’ won’t work. Eventually, you’ll realize that it is up to you. Go for it!

Understanding Hearing Loss

Understanding Your Options

The chirp of a bird, the laugh of a baby, the soothing strains of music—imagine not being able to hear those things clearly. This is, sadly, the case for many millions of people. In the United States alone, more than 50 million people have some degree of hearing loss, making it the third most common chronic physical condition. About one in three people between 65 and 74 years have diminished hearing. Nearly half of those over 75 have difficulty hearing.

To understand how hearing loss happens, it can be helpful to understand how hearing works. Sound waves pass through the outer ear and cause the eardrum to vibrate. The eardrum and three small bones of the middle ear make the vibrations bigger as they travel to the inner ear. There, the vibrations pass through fluid in a snail-shaped part of the inner ear known as the cochlea. Attached to nerve cells in the cochlea are thousands of tiny hairs that help turn sound vibrations into electrical signals. The electrical signals are transmitted to the brain. The brain turns these signals into sound.

The type of hearing loss depends on the specific cause and affected area of the ear. Hearing loss can stem from various factors, including exposure to loud noise, infection, head trauma, and certain medical conditions or medications. Even the normal wear and tear of aging can result in hearing loss. Age-related hearing loss happens little by little, so you may not notice it at first. That’s why regular hearing tests are so important!

How often to have your hearing tested depends on your age. Newborn hearing screenings are essential, and regular checkups throughout childhood are commonplace. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) guidelines state that healthy adults aged 18–40 years old who are not experiencing any noticeable hearing loss should have their hearing tested every three to five years.

Many healthcare providers can perform audio screenings, but advanced hearing tests and evaluation should be done by an audiologist. These healthcare professionals are trained to diagnose and treat hearing and balance issues.

They can determine whether connections between the inner ear and brain are normal and can check the condition of the ear drum. They can determine the type and degree of hearing loss. They can recommend protective devices to prevent further hearing loss from excessive noise, and they can provide and fit hearing devices.

Some types of hearing loss can be stopped or slowed down with proactive measures. Noise-induced hearing loss, caused by exposure to loud sounds, is largely preventable by taking precautions to protect your ears. Other types of hearing loss, like that caused by aging or certain medical conditions, may not be reversible but can be managed with treatments like hearing aids. Hearing aids don’t slow down the actual physical

progression of hearing loss, but they can improve hearing and prevent further cognitive decline by improving communication. There have been significant advances in hearing devices. From Bluetooth connectivity to noise-canceling features to health tracking capabilities, modern hearing aids offer more than just improved hearing—they enhance overall quality of life.

You’ll want to think about many factors when choosing the best hearing aid for you. Your degree of hearing loss, style preferences, and budget will help to narrow your choices. The cost of testing and treatment may be covered by insurance but varies greatly. It’s best to check with your provider. Your hearing specialist may also be able to determine your coverage. They can help you compare differences between models as you make a final decision.

Hearing aids make sounds louder but rely on the ear’s natural hearing ability. Cochlear implants work in a different way. When people with severe to profound hearing loss do not benefit from conventional hearing aids, they may be eligible for a cochlear implant.

Cochlear implants directly stimulate the part of the ear that doesn’t work by using a mild electrical current applied to the structures in the cochlea. Popular devices consist of an external processor and an implant placed under the skin with electrodes that go into the inner ear.

This device requires outpatient surgery that takes a few hours under general anesthesia. Testing determines if one is a candidate for the surgery, and insurance approval is necessary for the cost to be covered. It takes time and training to learn to hear the signals from a cochlear implant as words. Within three to six months of use, most people with cochlear implants make big gains.

Your hearing is too valuable to neglect! Ask your primary doctor if it’s time for you to have your hearing screened.

Manners and Etiquette

Who Should Teach the Kids?

A group of us were chatting the other day on a variety of topics, mostly related to the changes we’ve seen in the behavior of kids of all ages. We’re all close to the same age and remember when kids were taught manners (that is, saying “please” and “thank you” and not interrupting adults when they were talking). We recalled showing respect for others by holding a door open for those who were older, were carrying a burden, or were herding a group of youngsters.

Comments were made on the rough language we hear today. “In the old days, we wouldn’t dream of using that kind of language in public or around adults!” We also remarked on attitudes implicitly expressed by some workers in service industries. “I’ve been ignored or treated with an attitude bordering on rudeness!”

This all raised the question of who has the responsibility for teaching manners and respect. Government? Schools? Parents? All of those? None of those? At one time, there were books on all areas of etiquette. Miss Manners made it easy to figure out how to behave or dress in certain circumstances. Unless there are copies still gathering dust on our bookshelves, these books have basically disappeared. We agreed that the government should NOT be responsible for teaching etiquette and manners because international protocols take into consideration that different countries have different customs. Therefore, the responsibility for teaching manners and

etiquette (the proper way to act, speak, or dress) should fall on the adults of the local population. Parents should be the ones most responsible for their kids!

Times have changed, but manners and respect have not. It’s still proper to say “please” and “thank you.” Thanking someone in the moment for something received is always proper. It’s also appreciated by the giver to receive a card or email expressing thanks after the fact. A major complaint heard from grandparents is receiving no expression of thanks or appreciation for gifts…or even notice of receipt!

Mom taught me not to take take my bad mood out on those around me…a practice I try to follow today. “It’s easier to smile than to frown,” she’d say. Dad’s motto, expressed as, “honey works better than vinegar,” meant that it was better to make a request for something than to make demands or give an order…especially if you’re hoping for someone else’s cooperation. In preparation for occasions when safety is in question and an order MUST be given, practice playing “freeze tag” with the kids: “When I say FREEZE, it means STOP RIGHT NOW!”

Twenty-five years ago, when I was assigned this column, my directive was: “Write with a light pen,” meaning, “DON’T PREACH!” I keep that thought in mind when I’m writing and in my everyday activities. So far, so good!

Your Brakes

Don’t Leave the Driveway Without Them!

It’s time to give some credit where credit is due. Brakes are something we don’t spend a lot of time pondering, but just try and drive a vehicle when they’re not in good repair! Actually…please don’t.

Faulty brakes significantly increase stopping distances, which makes it harder to avoid collisions and accidents. (When it takes longer to stop, you’re more likely to hit whatever you’re trying to avoid.) And even if you manage to get home safely, driving with worn-out brakes can cause damage to other brake components, which will lead to more expensive repairs.

There are two main types of braking systems: disc brake systems and anti-lock brake systems. Think of using hand brakes on a bicycle and you will understand how disc brakes work on a car. The wheels of a car are bolted to rotors, which are steel discs. A caliper encloses each rotor, holding two very hard ceramic brake pads. When depressed, the brake pedal initiates hydraulic pressure from the brake master cylinder. This sends brake fluid through brake lines to activate a piston in the calipers, which closes the brake pads against the rotor.

Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) are designed to prevent brakes from totally locking up, which prevents skidding. This type of braking system is common in cars built in the last few decades. Sensors in ABS systems send pulses to a processor, which monitors each wheel’s speed. If one wheel slows down more than the rest do, the ABS system, using the processor and a system of pumps and valves, meters the braking force differently to any wheels that are slowing more quickly than others.

How will you know if your vehicle’s brakes need repair? Well, you can rely somewhat on your ears to know that something is not right. If you hear a high-pitched squeaking or squealing sound, what you’re hearing is called an indicator—a small piece of metal designed to make that high-pitched sound to alert you. If the sound is inconsistent, it might not be a problem; sometimes, brakes can squeal just because the car was parked in the rain. If the sound does not go away, it’s time to visit your mechanic or brake repair shop.

While we’re on the topic of sounds: If the sound you hear coming from the wheels is not a squeal but rather a grinding sound, your brakes are already in bad shape. Your pads are shot, and the rotor and the caliper are in direct contact. Get to the shop ASAP to have your brake pads replaced. You’ll probably need your rotors turned or replaced, too.

If you see a small puddle of brake fluid where your car was parked, that is another indication that you should get to a brake repair shop. Another way to monitor your brakes is to look between the spaces in your wheels. You will be able to see the brake pads. If the pad is less than a quarter inch thick, you should have your brakes checked. It is recommended to visually inspect your brake pads every six months or 15,000 miles.

That brings us to the life of your braking system. How long should brakes last? Brake pads typically last between 25,000 and 70,000 miles. Factors like aggressive braking can shorten the life of a brake pad. City driving with frequent stops and starts puts more stress on your brakes. Conversely, highway driving can actually extend the life of your brakes. After all, you almost never brake suddenly on the highway.

Those of us who are not new to car ownership may feel like brake pads don’t last as long as they used to. This is not our imagination! Of course, different brake pad materials have varying life spans, but changes in driving habits and road conditions have, in fact, led to more frequent brake pad replacement. The frequent stops and starts of aggressive city driving, in increased traffic, ask more of our braking systems than the streets of yesteryear, which perhaps were not quite so busy.

To make your brakes last longer, drive conservatively. Maintain a safe following distance so you can react to traffic conditions without needing to brake suddenly. Also, you can reduce unnecessary weight in your vehicle, as a heavier vehicle requires more braking force.

It’s also important to maintain your braking system regularly. A brake fluid flush and replace should be done around every 25,000 miles. Regularly cleaning your brake rotors can help prevent excessive wear.

You know you can’t use your car without its brakes. Give your braking system (and the drivers around you) a break! Be mindful of your driving style to extend the life of your brakes.

Specialty Dental Care, P.C.

Helping Patients Smile with Confidence

Do you suffer from red, swollen, or bleeding gums? Do you have loose teeth, receding gums, or mouth sores? If so, you may have periodontal disease, also known as gum disease. According to the CDC, about 42 percent of adults (aged 30 and older) have periodontitis. This is not a club you want to join! Dr. Timothy McVaney and his team at Specialty Dental Care can help. They spend every day diagnosing and treating periodontal disease to improve their patients’ lives.

Dr. McVaney is a second-generation dentist who founded Specialty Dental Care in 1990. An Omaha native, Dr. McVaney earned his DDS and MS in periodontics from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s College of Dentistry. He is a Fellow in the American and International College of Dentistry, Past President and Fellow in the American Society of Geriatric Dentistry, and a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.

A periodontist specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease. Gingivitis is a mild form of the disease, characterized by irritation, swelling, and bleeding of the gums. When treated early,

gum disease is reversible. However, if left untreated, it can lead to damaged gums, erosion of soft tissues, bone loss, and tooth loss.

Specialty Dental Care offers a comprehensive range of services to treat gum disease and promote long-term oral health. For sore, swollen, or bleeding gums, a deep root cleaning called scaling and root planing may be performed. This

procedure removes tartar and bacteria above and below the gumline and cleans diseased roots. Teeth that are damaged due to decay, trauma, or gum disease may require extraction. Gum/bone grafts repair receding gums and spurs new growth and tissue regeneration.

When teeth cannot be saved, dental implants can serve as replacements. Dental implants are titanium posts that are surgically placed in the jawbone to serve as artificial tooth roots. If the jawbone is weak or partially missing, a bone graft may be necessary to provide additional support for the implant. A connector post, known as an abutment, is screwed into the titanium post and serves as the foundation for an artificial tooth. A crown is placed on the abutment, resulting in a natural-looking tooth.

Like natural teeth, dental implants require regular brushing, flossing, and check-ups. If dental implants are not cared for, complications may develop. Peri-implantitis involves inflammation of the gums surrounding a dental implant, accompanied by bone loss in the surrounding area. Symptoms of peri-implantitis include redness or swelling around the implant, pain or tenderness in the gums, pus around the implant, or a loose implant. If caught early, peri-implantitis can often be treated with non-surgical methods. If peri-implantitis is left untreated, the implant may fail, and surgical treatment may be necessary.

Dr. McVaney has integrated advanced technology into his practice to better serve his patients. 3D imaging, for example, provides a clearer view of bone structure, nerve location, and other important information. “We work closely with our patients and their primary

dentist to ensure continuity and long-term success,” Dr. McVaney emphasizes. “We focus on comprehensive treatment planning, not just a quick fix.”

Dr. McVaney believes that relationships are an essential part of a patient’s experience, and he spends a great deal of time listening to his patients. “We aim to provide them with the best care through a conservative and minimally invasive approach,” he says. “My goals are to help patients keep their teeth, whenever possible, and to keep periodontitis from redeveloping.” Several staff members have been with the practice for over 20 years, a testament to the team’s dedication and the value placed on relationships.

For patients struggling with dental issues, Dr. McVaney offers insight on when it might be time to consult a periodontist. “If a patient is experiencing progression of a problem without finding an answer, we may be able to help.” Such problems might include tooth pain, grinding, persistent gum bleeding, or swollen gums. “I will get the job done,” he asserts. “I do not stop until I find a solution for my patients.”

Dr. McVaney finds it rewarding to work with patients throughout a treatment plan. “It means a lot to see the comfort and confidence of a patient’s smile and chewing when the treatment plan is complete,” he says. “They can get back to living the life they want to live.”

Specialty Dental Care is located at 12242 K Plaza in Omaha. They are open Monday for professional case designing, Tuesday and Wednesday from 7:00 to 4:00, Thursday from 9:00 to 5:00, and Friday from 7:00 to noon. You can reach them at 402- 334-8083 or visit them online at omahaspecialtydental.com.

Good Life

Selecting Quality Furniture

Choose Furniture with Lasting Value

Furnishing a home is more than just filling space. The right furniture can create a comfortable and beautiful environment. And well-made pieces maintain their quality over time. Thoughtful choices elevate your space, and knowing what to look for can help you select the right quality pieces for your home.

How do you know whether you are buying high-quality furniture? Several factors should be considered, including strength, materials, construction, cushion quality, and fabric quality. Learning more before you buy helps you spot the differences between well-made pieces and those that will not last.

The strength of furniture affects how well the piece holds up over time and maintains its appearance. Well-built pieces handle everyday use without sagging, wobbling, or breaking down. Sturdy construction extends the lifespan of furniture and ensures safety, especially for children and older adults.

The construction and type of wood in furniture impacts its durability and appearance. Hardwoods are generally more durable than softwoods, better at resisting dents, scratches, and divots. Popular hardwoods, such as oak, maple, walnut, mahogany, and cherry, create strong, attractive pieces that age beautifully. Look for strong joints, such as dovetail, which are both durable and long-lasting.

Different types of hardwood influence a room’s overall style. The smooth grains and color variations of maple and walnut make them good choices for modern designs. The grains and imperfections found in hickory and oak work well for rustic styles. Dark woods, like mahogany and cherry, work well in traditional and Victorian-style homes.

When selecting upholstery, think about your lifestyle and how you will use the furniture. Upholstery includes the fabric, springs, webbing, and padding. While the internal frame and support system remain hidden, they affect how your furniture feels and how well it holds up.

Fabrics vary in durability, comfort, and style. Pieces in high-traffic areas require durable, stain-resistant, tightly woven fabrics that can handle daily wear. Leather, microfiber, and certain types of cotton are better at resisting spills and damage than fabrics like silk or linen. Fabrics with a higher thread count typically indicate a tighter weave, which provides better durability and longevity.

A high-quality piece often features a kiln-dried hardwood frame with eightway hand-tied springs because of their support, durability, and flexibility. Although less expensive webbing supports may be comfortable, they can become less supportive over time. If you’re wondering about a part of the furniture that you can’t see, ask a member of the sales staff. If they don’t know or don’t care to find out, you may be in the wrong store.

Several cushion fill options are available. Feather-filled cushions offer a lot of comfort but require regular fluffing. Foam or fiber fillings provide structure but can flatten and lose their shape over time. A combination of feathers and foam works well because the feathers provide softness while the foam maintains the cushion’s form and support.

When shopping for a piece of furniture, read the tag, which provides valuable information about materials, construction quality, and care requirements. The tag also often contains information about where the piece was made, which

may be of interest to you if you want to support domestically made products or sustainable manufacturing practices. Review warranty information to understand the piece’s expected lifespan and what the manufacturer covers in the event of problems.

If you would like to elevate your look with custom or artisan-made furniture, you are not alone. Although custom pieces may cost more up front, they often save you money in the long run because of their superior craftsmanship and durability. And because the furniture is made according to your taste and specifications, you are less likely to grow tired of it over time.

Some people are drawn to artisan-made furniture because it is crafted by skilled artisans rather than produced by machines. When you purchase artisan-made pieces, you provide input on materials, finishes, colors, dimensions, and design details. This type of personalization creates a one-of-a-kind piece that can become a treasured heirloom.

When purchasing furniture, price alone does not ensure quality. An high price does not mean a well-made piece, and a lower cost does not necessarily mean poor craftsmanship; you need to look beyond the sticker price. Craftsmanship, materials, and construction are all key components to consider. Look for quality materials, solid joinery, and well-finished details for indications that the piece will last.

An investment in quality furniture is an investment in your home. By paying attention to how the furniture is made, you can choose pieces that provide comfort, are durable, and maintain their style over time.

Heating Systems

Which System Is Best for Your Home?

During a summer like this one has been, we all probably put our air conditioners through the wringer. The air conditioning puts the AC in HVAC. If it took a beating this summer, it might be time to take a look at the HV in HVAC (that is, the heating and ventilation). You might need an upgrade before the cold winter months tax your current system beyond repair.

There are several different types of heating systems currently on the market. Forced air, ductless, heat pumps, hybrid heating, radiant heat, and hydronic heating systems are some of the more common systems to choose from.

Forced air heating systems are probably the most common types of HVAC in North America, with more than 60 percent of single-family homes equipped with them at present. Forced heating, which is usually paired with central air cooling, uses a series of ducts to carry hot (or cold) air throughout your home. The heat is typically generated from a furnace or heat pump, and the temperature is controlled using a thermostat.

Forced air heating has the benefits of being reliable and quick to heat. On the flip side, they tend to be noisier than other heating alternatives, can contribute to poor air quality when not maintained properly, and do not have an option for zoned temperature control.

As their name implies, ductless heating systems (also known as ductless mini-splits) operate without the use of ducts. They use individual indoor wall or ceiling-mounted fans or blowers connected to

an exterior condensing unit via a refrigerant line. Because they are so compact, they are typically only able to heat one or two rooms at a time, with the exception of multi-zone units that can heat or cool multiple rooms or zones. (Such a system consists of multiple indoor units that connect to a single outdoor unit.)

Ductless systems are best used in homes that don’t have existing ductwork or where you don’t want to install ductwork, older homes with boilers or baseboard heaters (but no existing cooling), sunrooms or enclosed patios, attics, garages, or lake cabins. They have the benefits of being quieter than duct-based systems, require minimal space, and are energy-efficient.

Heat pump systems come in a variety of options, both ducted and ductless. They function by electrically transferring heat and cool in and around your house, rather than by generating new heat, which makes them very energy-efficient. They can come in airsource, geothermal, or air-to-water types of units.

Geothermal heat pumps are the most expensive type of heating system to install, but they are rated to last 24 (for indoor

A Few Words From One Of Our Advertisers:

“I began advertising with Women’s Edition starting with the November 2019 issue and I have been thrilled with the results! I’ve had numerous new clients come to the gallery because they saw my ads in Women’s Edition, even as I’ve been working by appointment in recent months due to the pandemic. Most had never been to downtown Ralston, where I’m located, so introducing them to our town and what we have to offer has been another benefit!

The advertising has resulted not only in sales, but also in new followers on my social media platforms and new newsletter subscribers. Together with their outstanding customer service and sales results, advertising with Women’s Edition has been one of the best investments I’ve ever made for my business. Thank you, Women’s Edition!”

components) to 50 years (for underground components). They are most effective in homes located in more mild climates, through cold climate specialty heat pumps do exist (and are rated to perform in temperatures as low as five degrees Fahrenheit).

Hybrid heat systems (or dual fuel heat pumps) take the best of multiple systems and combine them! They typically consist of an electrical heat pump and a gas furnace (commonly found in forced air systems). The heat pump works as the A/C, mainly functioning in the summer and fall months, while saving the fossil-fueled furnace for when the weather gets really cold. This has the benefit of being more eco-friendly than many older forced-air systems without sacrificing the furnace-generated heat needed in colder climates. Hybrid systems work best in climates that experience all four seasons at their best (and their worst).

Radiant and hydronic heating are often conflated. While they have similarities, they are not the same. Radiant heating is used to refer to systems that rely on one central heating unit, like floor heating coils or a radiator, but rather than forcing that heat throughout your house using ductwork, it just radiates from its source. Radiant heating doesn’t come with a counterpart A/C system and can be a boon to anyone with severe allergies, since it doesn’t rely on blowing air.

Hydronic systems can be radiant, but they aren’t always. They use water as a medium to distribute heat, typically through use of a boiler and a series of pipes. Hydronic heating can be an incredibly effective and efficient heating system, as well as being able to function as a heater or a cooler.

In the Midwest, the most recommended heating system is one that can function with a gas or electric furnace, such as forced air, hybrid, or ductless systems (for smaller or older homes). Experimenting with a completely new heating system may be tempting! Sometimes, getting a more efficient model of what’s tried and true in your climate zone is just what the HVAC expert ordered.

JIG Fine Concrete

A Great Reputation, One Job at a Time

Prominent business coach Brian Koslow says, “There is no advertisement as powerful as a positive reputation traveling fast.” Jose Garcia, the owner of JIG Fine Concrete, concurs—he is fully committed to earning a great reputation by doing great work for every one of his customers. When they spread the word about him, he wants the word to be good!

Jose Garcia graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs and went on to earn a degree at Iowa Western Community College in 2003. His major was Mechanical Drafting and Design Technology. “I started in construction in 2002 and was a helper in three trades—concrete, carpentry, and rod busting.” (Rod busting, for those outside the industry, is the process of replacing rebar for concrete foundations.) He spent some time in sales, selling concrete products and the tools used in the trade.

He learned that residential customers with concrete needs wanted to work with a conscientious, customer service–oriented company, and he decided to start one himself. “I established my own firm about five years ago,” Jose says. “JIG stands for my full name— Jose Ines Garcia. It demonstrates the pride and commitment I have in my services and products.”

The firm’s services go far beyond basic driveway installation. In addition to being driveway replacement and repair experts, the group also creates and repairs walkways, sidewalks, retaining walls, patios, concrete stairs, stonework, decorative concrete, and more.

“I believe I have created a formula that works for our customers,” Jose shares. “We meet with you to discuss what you want, and we give you a free detailed estimate so that you can approve costs before a job begins. We are licensed and insured throughout the Omaha area and surrounding cities.”

Have you been turned down by a concrete company that said your job wasn’t the right size for their team? No job is too big or too small for the team of pros at JIG Fine Concrete. The firm is dedicated to service excellence and customer satisfaction. “We put the customer first, and their satisfaction speaks volumes. We get most of our work through word-of-mouth marketing or referrals. Reputation is king for us, and we are happy when clients talk about our projects and give us positive reviews.”

Customers are quick to sing JIG Fine Concrete’s praises. “I was extremely satisfied with the work,” says Susan. “Jose is meticulous, detailed-oriented, and honest. My driveway sloped, and when he fixed it, he figured out how to slope it correctly.” JIG Fine Concrete also helped Susan with a stair project that other companies deemed a tear-out job. “The stairs were built in the 1800s, so I really wanted

Every day, they strive to meet both their customers’ expectations and their own.

to keep them,” Susan recalls. “Jose found a way! When rain delayed the work, one of his team showed up on a Sunday to power wash the dirt off the concrete. He just goes that extra mile to make sure you are happy with his work.”

Satisfied client Judd feels the same way. “Last fall, I had a 3,000–square foot project that included sidewalks, a driveway, and a retaining wall,” Judd shares. “Jose was punctual and did great work. There were no surprises. He even put a cement slab in my backyard for a shed. I would highly recommend his company.”

This kind of review is Jose’s biggest reward. “Laying concrete is not an easy job,” he acknowledges. “It takes a lot of time to strip out old foundations, lay groundwork, and do the cement. Weather can sometimes plague execution. But it’s all worth it when the customer is happy.”

Aside from the challenges of the weather, which are unavoidable, Jose points out that it can be a challenge to stay competitive. “Some firms will outbid you to get the work and then do a shoddy job,” he says. “I remind customers that you get what you pay for. It pays to get it done right the first time!” Jose is proud to stand behind his work and his team. Every day, they strive to meet both their customers’ expectations and their own.

Do You Really Know It All?

Be a Learn-It-All Instead

“I know, I know, I know!” — Unknown

One of my favorite things to do when I am in a group of people is to become a fly on the wall and eavesdrop on conversations. A pattern that I have noticed over the years is the number of know-it-alls who have appeared on the planet. It’s as if some of the people I meet are experts on EVERYTHING.

I am sure you know someone like that. You begin a conversation, they interrupt you, finish your sentence, educate you, and are giving you the inside scoop on the topic at hand.

“If you think you know it all, you are not listening.”

I hate to admit it, but this is how I used to be. I loved to be the person “in the know.” I wanted to come across as an expert in just about everything. I got very good at spreading baloney far and wide. I am not sure where this bad habit stemmed from. I know now how destructive it was…and I also know how absolutely annoying it was to others.

“People who think they know everything really annoy those of us who know we don’t.” — Bjarne Stroustrup

When I faced the fact that I was one of these know-it-alls, I began to check my own words. Before, if someone asked me about something I didn’t know about, I could talk for several minutes on the subject without knowing whether it was true or not. Now? If I don’t know, I simply say, “I don’t know.”

“Unless your name is Google, stop acting like you know everything.” — Anonymous

A side benefit of this switch was the load that came off my shoulders when I realized that I didn’t NEED to be the expert in the room. I cut myself some slack by not feeling it was my duty to know everything and be Google to friends and family. It enabled me to breathe, be calm, and be at peace. It made me a better person.

“I took his suggestion to heart and went from a ‘know-it-all’ to a ‘learn-it-all.’” — T. Harv Eker

And right there is another benefit I received. I now have time for myself to dive in and learn more about my interests. Not to be an expert, but simply to learn about topics that call to me, that help me become a better person. And that, friends, makes me happy to be me.

“What is really important is what you learn after thinking you know it all.” — Waite Phillips
