Winery & Vineyards
Steve Ledson comes from a long line of Sonoma County farmers and winemakers dating back to the 1860s. More than a winemaker or viticulturist, Steve is a true vigneron — the French term for one who does both, he walks the vineyards, tends each vine with sustainable, time-honored practices, and oversees every step of winemaking. His hands-on dedication yields expressive, place-driven wines that reflect the character of Sonoma. Designed and built by Steve, the iconic Castle winery is considered one of the world’s most impressive. Enjoy private and seated tastings. Reserve a table by the fireplace or in the West Oak Grove, and explore the Gourmet Marketplace’s selection of artisanal cheeses, meats, sandwiches, salads, and treats.
Perched at 2,500 feet in the Moon Mountain District, Mountain Terraces is Ledson’s dramatic Estate Vineyard known for world-class wines and sweeping views of Sonoma Valley and the Bay Area. Extreme elevation, distinctive soils, and meticulous sustainable farming create intensely expressive wines available exclusively through an annual allocation. Guests can also book guest houses with stunning vineyard and Bay Area views.
Located on the Historic Sonoma Plaza, this six-room boutique hotel was named one of the 100 Hottest New Hotals globally and one of the 9 Best Hotels in Sonoma County for Wine Tasting and Wellness Getaway by Condé Nast Traveler. Designed and built by Steve Ledson, it blends timeless luxury with personalized service. Rooms feature Whirlpool tubs, fireplaces, private balconies, and marble amenities. Wrap your day up at the Zina Lounge. Taste meticulously handcrafted and award-winning wines from Zina Hyde Cunningham, Mountain Terraces and Ledson wineries while watching the sunset from the sidewalk seating, or relaxing in the lounge by the fireplace.
Six Sigma Ranch and Winery Embraces Blue Zone Philosophy of Health and Nutrition
Six Sigma Ranch and Winery Embraces Blue Zone Philosophy of Health and Nutrition
BY BARBARA BARIELLE
For Six Sigma Ranch and Winery, embracing 2026 is not about concepts like dry January or abstention from the “good life” but about balance, diversity and living your best life. Their new year’s resolution is not about deprivation but a lifestyle that feels good, sustainable and joyful.
Six Sigma Ranch and Winery is Blue Zone® approved – an esteemed designation indicating areas where people live longer and healthier lives. Many of these precious areas are wine cultivation areas which significantly underscores the Six Sigma belief that balance and a healthy lifestyle can include wines and the nutrition of healthy, organically grown fruits and vegetables as well as organically raised meats.
Lake County’s Six Sigma Winery’s philosophy is harmony and that is exactly what you will find on this 4,300-acre property that was the family home for Russell Rustici, the grandson of an Italian immigrant who founded a major San Francisco produce market. Mr. Rustici was growing older but not quite ready to sell his magnificent ranch until Danish GE executive Kaj Ahlmann decided to look north after already investigating properties in Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino. When Kaj saw the pastures, hills and woodlands located just south of Lower Lake in Lake County, he was enthralled and the idea of building Six Sigma Ranch and Winery took root, an appropriate concept for a winemaking family that researched every acre of the ranch and how the existing ranch worked in unison with nature twenty years ago and how the vineyards thrive today.
In operation now for twenty-six years, Six Sigma now produces 3,000 cases of wine annually with the capacity to scale up to 10,000. Growing on about 40 acres, Kaj and his wife, Else, worked with UC Davis, placing sensors throughout the vineyards to plant the best varieties for each vineyard plot. Currently, Six Sigma grows Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Tempranillo, the latter reflecting the couple’s passion for Spanish wines. Although part of the winery’s grapes are sold to other vintners, enough is held back for a thriving wine program that supports Six Sigma’s 900 winery members, visitors from the Bay Area and around the world, and locals who take advantage of the ranch events, hikes and ranch-to-table dinners.
Six Sigma believes that balance and a healthy lifestyle can include wines and the nutrition of healthy organically grown fruits and vegetables as well as organically raised meats.
Daily Tastings and Fun at The Ranch Trails and Tours
The ranch’s miles of trails are there for the hiking , or mountain biking , from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Club members explore for free and others are free to roam for a small fee (kids and dogs are very welcome).
If a rugged open-air tour is more your speed, then hop on the Six Sigma Pinzgauer tours offered Saturdays throughout the day for $30 ($15 members) or daily for private tours. It’s an adventure like no other!
Wine and Organically Farmed Beef
Six Sigma is a true working cattle ranch spanning thousands of acres of rolling land. The property supports grazing cattle year-round, reflecting a deep commitment to stewardship, sustainability, and the rhythms of ranch life. One of the benefits of membership is a discount on farm-raised beef. How many wine clubs can say that?
Although the year is just beginning, it is not too soon to plan on Six Sigma’s monthly Paella Nights continuing Wednesday February 4th (and the first Wednesday of every month of the year) and another guided hike at 9 a.m. on Saturday, February 7th. The hike kicks off a weekend celebrating the Ranch Red Blend release. Members are complimentary for seatings at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. or 3 p.m. and non-members pay just $45 for tastings and food pairings.
Also inquire about Six Sigma’s Elevated Tasting Experiences which include a dedicated winery educator, a curated charcuterie plate and more. Harvest Host Members & Wine Club Members can also stay overnight in their RV!
While hiking the volcanic soils of Six Sigma, guests can keep an eye out for “Lake County diamonds” — the brilliant quartz crystals naturally scattered throughout the rugged landscape. It’s a simple, sparkling reminder that this working ranch holds unexpected treasures beyond the vine.
Spend the Night Under the Stars
One of the best ways to experience the stars and all of the bounty of the ranch (did I mention the 75 head of Angus Beef cattle that make up the ranch’s meats program, available in the tasting room or at ranch dinners) is to stay a night or two at Huttopia, a European glamping concept with only 7 camps in North America, the newest being Six Sigma’s Wine Country locale.
Huttopia glamping at Six Sigma has exploded in popularity and now consists of 100 glamping tents, 80 of which have their own private baths, a swimming pool, bistro, market and more. Escape to nature's embrace without leaving comfort behind. Open late April through early November, Huttopia at Six Sigma is the ultimate wine country experience. Book now on huttopia.com.
Drink and dine on the ranch where your wine and food is raised, hike miles of mountain trails or mountain bike the same and similar trails, sleep under stars so bright the sky's alight, dream well and wake to another day in paradise. A visit to Six Sigma is not just a stop to taste wine, although the wines are absolutely beautiful. Drink in the vast beauty of the ranch, breathe and spend some time getting back to enjoying the simple things, albeit with a bit of good wine and food.

About the Author
Q&A
:We had a chance to interview Adobe Road Winery’s head winemaker Garrett Martin and find out a little more about him, what he does, and how he does it.
■ S hare a bit about your background and how you got into winemaking. What got me into winemaking was a passion for fermentation in general. During college I began experimenting with fermentations of all sorts like making pickles, bread, cheese, beer, cider, and then eventually wine. I realized that I had a talent and a passion for it and dove head first working cellar jobs during the day, with school at night and weekends. I worked between Napa and Sonoma, increasing skill and responsibilities along the way to Adobe Road where I have been the winemaker for ten seasons.
■ What was the first wine you ever made, and how did it turn out?
My first fermented beverage is a better (funnier) story – it was hard cider! A friend and I went to Sebastopol and sourced some fresh pressed Gravenstein apple juice. We dumped it into a carboy and added wine yeast. After fermentation we bottled and refermented it to make it sparkling. I had visions of Champagne – I even riddled and hand-disgorged it in a friend’s bathroom shower! Messy, but effective. The taste was basic, but my mid-20s friends really appreciated it!
■ Can you describe your winemaking philosophy?
Full varietal expression while striving for perfect balance of flavors/textures.
■ How does your approach differ from other winemakers? Every winemaker is optimizing for what is important to them and their business. For some it’s all about power, for others its focused on restraint. For us, balance and varietal expression is key.
■ Adobe Road Winery wines have received more than 100 90+ point reviews from wine critics like Wine Spectator, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, James Suckling, and Jeb Dunnuck. Is there one specific thing you can point to that explains that high level of praise? There is not one specific thing to point to. Consistency and quality are key. What enables those are good partners and a talented team.
■ Since Adobe Road Winery doesn’t own any vineyards, you’re required to obtain your grapes from independent growers. How does that impact your job as winemaker?
We have fantastic long-term relationships with our growers and are so grateful to collaborate with all of them throughout each growing season. They are part of our team and we’re all aligned to help each other succeed.
■ Adobe Road produces both single varietals and blended wines. What is your approach to developing a new blended wine?
For a new blended wine, we start by imagining a flavor profile that we want to express. From there, long hours of complex blending trials take place while we fold together the right wines to showcase our vision. It’s a lot like painting or composing music to give just the right feeling and balance.
Garrett Martin, Head Winemaker Adobe Road Winery
WITH ALLAN CATES
■ How do you balance tradition and innovation in your winemaking?
The key question for me when looking at any new technology/innovation is if it helps make a better authentic expression of the wine. If it does, I’m happy to run trials with it. If the innovation ends up changing the soul of the wine, then it is a non-starter; no efficiency gain is worth that.
■ What advice would you give to someone who wants to become a winemaker?
Nothing is better than personal experience.
So I’d say get out there and ferment something. Make something and see if it lights you up. Pay attention to all the aromas and flavors around you. Learn the science, appreciate the art, and jump into a community of people who are doing the same.
■ Can you share your plans for the future?
Any new wines or projects in the pipeline?
Our most exciting project is the winery and entertainment venue we’re building on the downtown Petaluma riverfront. The venue will include tasting room space indoor and outdoor, banquet and conference rooms, a motorsports showroom with racecar simulators, winery production space, and a third story flat deck with expansive views of the river and the rolling Petaluma hills. It’s an incredible project!
■ What do you want people to experience when they taste your wine?
When folks taste our wines, I want them to experience vivid flavors and exceptional balance. Our wines also are best experienced with friends and laughter!
Discover Adobe Road wines in historic downtown Petaluma! Savor handcrafted, small-lot wines in a welcoming tasting room with flights, glass pours, charcuterie, and live music. Whether casual or elevated, each visit showcases expressive, highquality wines and local charm — a must-stop for enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

Can science — and even hypnosis — unlock the flavors we think we can’t taste?
If there is one common factor among those who are just wading into the experience of wine tasting, it is an early frustration and concern that they cannot (and perhaps never will be able to) differentiate the diversity of flavors and other characteristics apparent in only a sip or two of wine. Interestingly, this novice group is not alone. There are many with all levels of wine sophistication who question anyone’s ability to identify with confidence and accuracy the nuances of fruit and feel that even a little wine provides.
■ Predictive Coding
Two new scientific approaches are relevant to this exploration. One, advanced by Dr. Sam Lyons of the University of Pennsylvania, is called “predictive coding.” It holds that the brain is constantly predicting incoming sensory information, whether at the level of the millisecond, minute, hour, day, or year. In wine, predictive coding hypothesizes that flavor does not begin with your nose or tongue, but rather with predictions in your brain. The more confident the taster, the more every taste reinforces what they think will happen.
■ Hypnosis
The London Times recently published an article about Dita-Karine Madrid, who claims to have developed the second science referred to herein – the use of hypnology (the scientific study of sleep and hypnotic phenomena) to enhance the tasting of wine, chocolate and gastronomic meals. Apparently, hypnotized tasting is a small but growing trend in France as buffs seek to heighten their senses. Already, a handful of vineyards offer visitors such sessions under the
tutelage of a winemaker and hypnotist.
Ms. Madrid cites the tasting of a 2017 Château Grand-PuyLacoste with participating connoisseurs who were placed in a “light trance” with the promise of an “extraordinary experience.” She reports that the panel discovered new arrays of tastes and aromas as usual wine etiquette was swept away to leave naked emotions. For some there was an explosion of silk, for others an explosion of blackberry, or an explosion of camphor. However, whatever was experienced, all said there was, in fact, an explosion.
Explains Ms. Madrid, “When we taste something, it’s usually the conscious mind that takes precedence, with the subconscious mind having a secondary role. I inverse that. It’s the subconscious mind that takes power at that moment. I explain that this is the mind of our emotions [and] of our memory, and that when we are connected to them, it multiplies the senses.”
She continues. “I disconnect [those people tasting] from their conscience, and when I find that they are disconnected, I anchor them in the terroir and many feel that they are in the middle of the vines. Some even have the impression that they are munching the grapes, and one said he thought he had fallen into his glass. Some are so moved they even cry.”
Can America be far behind in facilitating these experiments?
■ MONTY PREISER
Mr. Preiser is a noted journalist and educator who has written wine-related articles in newspapers and magazines from coast to coast, as well as on the internet. He is a co-founder and chief judge of the American Fine Wine Invitational in Miami.
Pigs & Pinot Weekend, March 20–21
Celebrating Father-Son Chef Duos and Trailblazing Winemakers with its first-ever All-Female Gala Winemaker Lineup
Chef Charlie Palmer’s legendary Pigs & Pinot weekend — celebrated for uniting acclaimed chefs, winemakers, and sommeliers for a purposedriven celebration of heritage pork and Pinot Noir — returns for its 19th year, March 20-21, marking an exciting new chapter in the event’s history. For the first time, the weekend will be hosted at Appellation Healdsburg, Chef Palmer’s new flagship resort and dining destination in the heart of Sonoma County.
The 2026 edition embraces a meaningful father-and-son theme, honoring the evolution of culinary craftsmanship through mentorship, legacy, and innovation. Revered culinary icons will cook alongside the next generation of chefs shaping the future of American dining. Joining Chef Palmer and his son, Reed Palmer, chef de cuisine at Folia Bar & Kitchen at Appellation Healdsburg, are an extraordinary lineup of father-and-son duos: Wolfgang Puck and Byron Lazaroff-Puck; Emeril Lagasse and E.J. Lagasse; Jean-Georges Vongerichten and Cédric Vongerichten; and Dr. L Tim Ryan and Jackson Ryan. Together, they form a one-of-a-kind gathering rooted in tradition and forward-thinking creativity.
“For nearly two decades, Pigs & Pinot has brought people together through incredible food, wine, and a shared sense of purpose,” says Chef Palmer. “Bringing the event to Appellation Healdsburg feels like a full-circle moment—honoring our roots while celebrating the next generation of hospitality leaders.”
Complementing the culinary talent is an inspiring roster of trailblazing winemakers, highlighted by the event’s first-ever all-female Gala lineup. Featured winemakers include Eva Dehlinger (Dehlinger Winery), Perri Haughwout (Perri Jaye Vineyards), Ashley Herzberg (Innumero Wines), Anne Moller-Racke (Blue Farm Wines), and Heidi von der Mehden (Merry Edwards). 20th Annual California Artisan Cheese Festival
California’s premier cheese festival, the California Artisan Cheese Festival, returns for the 20th year with a three-day celebration, March 20-22, that showcases the people, stories, and flavors that make California cheese so special.
Produced by cheesemakers, experts and educators from the world of artisan cheese, the Festival offers a program of activities designed to connect people with the cheesemaking community and inspire deeper appreciation and enjoyment of cheese.
The Festival, which began in March 2007, has grown into three days of cheese tasting, education, and celebration that brings the public together with California's leading cheesemakers, experts and producers. Last year, over 2000 food lovers from 28 states (including California) and four countries attended at least one event.
This year the festival kicks off Friday, March 20th with fan-favorite farm and producer tours that offer a rare opportunity to go deep into local food culture and see firsthand where and how cheese gets its start. Meet the farmers, animals, cheesemakers and local producers and taste the fruits of their labor.
Cheese lovers can expand their knowledge and palates at Saturday’s seminars and workshops taught by some of the cheese world’s most knowledgeable experts. New this year will be a cheese and caviar pairing seminar and a raclette demo.
Also on Saturday is The Cheese Crawl at The Barlow in Sebastopol, an evening of grazing and discovery. Participants receive a map directing them to various businesses where artisan cheesemakers will serve samples of their finest cheeses accompanied by a featured food or beverage pairing. This experience is exclusively for guests 21 and over and sells out early.
Sunday morning sees the return of Bubbles & Bites, a thoughtfully curated tasting experience featuring California artisan cheeses paired with sparkling wine and delicious small bites, perfect for warming up one’s palate before the Marketplace opens. From there, enjoy VIP early entry to the Marketplace where attendees get to shop, taste and connect with the cheesemakers before the crowds arrive. Discover new favorites, stock up on specialty goods, and enjoy a more relaxed and spacious Marketplace experience.
The Festival culminates in the signature Sunday Marketplace in Grace Pavilion at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds. It brings together more than 100 artisan cheese and specialty food producers as well as winemakers, craft brewers, distillers, cider makers, and chefs in one place. Enjoy live music, a beer and wine garden all while sampling cheese and locally made accompaniments. Each guest will receive a wineglass and insulated tote with ice pack to fill with all their Marketplace finds. It’s a delicious finish to the festival weekend.
Produced by the California Artisan Cheese Guild, the California Artisan Cheese Festival aims to increase cheese appreciation and educate consumers about artisan cheese by celebrating California’s cheesemakers and farmers.

First Annual Russian River Fungi Fest
Celebrating West Sonoma County’s World-Class Mushroom Biodiversity
Educational talks, foraging adventures, and mushroom marketplace come to Guerneville February 21-22
Festival Highlights Include:
Solar Punk Farms and the Russian River Chamber of Commerce are excited to announce the inaugural Russian River Fungi Fest, a two-day celebration of West Sonoma County’s exceptional fungal ecosystem. Taking place February 21-22, across multiple venues in Guerneville and West County, the festival will feature expert-led educational talks, hands-on foraging expeditions, a bustling Mushroom Marketplace, and mushroom-themed food and drink from local restaurants and breweries.
“West Sonoma County is known for redwoods, river recreation and amazing food and wine,” said Nick Schwanz, the co-founder of Solar Punk Farms and President of the Chamber. “But so much of that is constrained to the summer season. The winter is actually one of Sonoma County’s best kept secrets because it’s mushroom season – and our unique ecosystem has a rich mycological scene and culture. This festival is our way of celebrating both our world renowned fungi and our world renowned fungi people.”
There is a suggested donation of $15 to help cover the cost of the event, but no one will be turned away at the door! (The goal is to be accessible to any and everyone!)
The festival aims to foster knowledge and appreciation for the region’s unique fungal biodiversity, promote local chefs, foragers, mycologists, and knowledge keepers, and further cement the region's role as a hot-spot for ecologically conscious tourism.
• The Mushroom Marketplace: A vibrant bazaar featuring local makers, foragers, artists, and food producers selling mushroom-related products, art, and goods.
• The Fungi Forum: Educational talks and panel discussions about fungal ecology, foraging ethics, mushroom cultivation, and the vital role fungi play in forest health, featuring experts from across Northern California.
• Mycological Adventures: Guided foraging expeditions and educational nature hikes through West County's stunning redwood forests, led by experienced mycologists and naturalists.
• Community Events: Mushroom themed menus, hands-on workshops, kids-programming, musical performances, movie screenings and more hosted by dozens of different Russian River businesses and organizations

Butterfly Topiary at Etude Wines
The beauty of nature and the artistry of winemaking combine in stunning fashion at Etude Wines. Etude has partnered with topiary artist Joe Kyte to create three butterfly topiary art installations that will live at Etude’s Napa Valley property, celebrating Etude’s leadership in wines that are grown, not made – meaning minimal intervention in the vineyards themselves – reduced emissions, and biodiversity, fostering species like the monarch butterflies that inspired these designs. Not only do these installations pay homage to Etude’s commitment to sustainable winemaking practices, but it’s also a beautiful family-friendly destination.
Etude Wines, located in the Los Carneros region between Napa and Sonoma, is world renown for its outstanding Pinot Noir. In 1982, Etude was established in the cool-climate Carneros region with the aim of producing world-class Pinot Noir.
Pinot Noir is the most appropriate vehicle with which to study wine growing, precisely because of its demanding nature but also because of its delicacy and transparency. When it’s right, Pinot Noir is a glorious and moving thing. It is in the pursuit of that experience that the winemakers of Etude work.

Napa Valley MUSTARD CELEBRATION
Watch Napa Valley bloom to life with the brilliance of our most anticipated season.
While the rest of the world is gloomily saying farewell to the last echoes of the holiday season, Napa Valley is already moving on to a time where the Valley is lush with new life. January through March means Mustard Season here in wine country, and visitors from all over arrive to marvel at the region’s transformation into a brilliant display of color and artistry. It is as though the world has quietly, magically reset itself: winter becomes a distant memory, and everywhere you look, the valley teems with sunshine-yellow life.
Long before it became one of Wine Country’s most beloved seasonal sights, Jesuit priests planted mustard between vineyard rows out of simple necessity. Early growers sowed it as a cover crop, valuing its ability to enrich the soil, prevent erosion, and attract beneficial insects during the dormant winter months. Over time, what began as practical farming wisdom evolved into a defining visual signature of the region. Each winter and early spring, the bright yellow blooms return, threading their way between bare vines and signaling both renewal and continuity — a living reminder that Wine Country’s beauty is deeply rooted in thoughtful stewardship of the land.
All throughout the valley, festivities celebrating this spectacular season will cater to every sense, and incredible food, wine and art are here to pair perfectly with the vibrant backdrop. Indulge in expressive wines at lively celebrations, enjoy unforgettable culinary experiences brought to you by some of the best chefs in the world, and, thanks to Napa Valley Mustard Celebration founder Jessel Miller, some wonderful works of local art. Miller, an artist herself and owner of the longest-running art gallery in Napa (Jessel Gallery), has long been dedicated to uplifting and preserving Napa Valley’s local art scene, so you can expect quite a few inspiring pieces to take center stage.
Each year, the celebration includes a featured artist, responsible for designing the official Napa Valley Mustard Celebration poster. This year’s featured artist is Paul Youngman, a Wisconsin-born Napa local who has been painting vivid oil renditions of wine country’s stunning landscapes since 1976. He has a knack for capturing the true essence of the valley in rich, extraordinary bursts of color, and his work for this year’s mustard season is no exception. Prints of the poster featuring Youngman’s painting, Winter into Spring, are available for purchase both online and at a number of Mustard Celebration events.
Mustard Season Celebrations & Events
Browse works by local artists at a curated exhibit that captures the breathtaking beauty of Napa Valley’s Wild Winter Mustard Season through the lens of talented photographers – through March 26 – with The Photo Finale Closing Reception & People’s Choice Award presentation
February 7th-8th, Jessel Miller welcomes you to Jessel Gallery’s NVMV Celebration, which will feature art by a wide variety of talented Napa Valley artists. This year’s featured artist, Paul Youngman, will be there as well, so you’ll have the opportunity to chat with him about his work and even take a signed print home. Miller will also be hosting a similar artist demonstration event on the weekend of March 7th-8th, so you’ll have multiple chances to experience the artistry.
Of course, in February, the smell of mustard blossoms isn’t the only thing in the air — love is, too. Celebrate Valentine’s Day and Mustard Season at the Collings & Légère Art Gallery, where mustard-inspired beauty makes everything feel rosy. Enjoy complimentary hot chocolate with your sweetheart and discover the exquisite paintings of local impressionist artists Marta Collings and Thérèse Légère.
St. Helena is getting in on the mustard season excitement, too, with a special Mustard Celebration Day at the St. Helena
Welcome Center on Friday, February 27th. Savor seasonally inspired food and wine as you browse local photographer Rob Watermeyer’s works and soak in the lively atmosphere of this charming town coming to life.
March brings mustard season to a close, and will be ending on a high note with the American Canyon Mustard Celebration Event hosted by American Canyon Chamber of Commerce on March 21 at RD Winery, featuring a variety of vendors as well as special musical performances by local youth programs.
Then, as the final mustard season hurrah, DoNapa Downtown Association is throwing a two-day Mustard Celebration Finale: A Festival of Wine, Food & Art on March 27th and 28th at the Culinary Institute of America at Copia in downtown Napa, where you will have the chance to try food, sip wines, and browse goodies from over 75 different artisans. Get your tickets now — this event is a must-attend, and space fills up fast! As one of Napa Valley’s most anticipated seasons, this is the perfect time to book a wine country getaway, so what are you waiting for? Watch the valley burst to life as we welcome these brilliant blooms with open arms.

DESTINATION: LAKE COUNTY
Barrels & Verticals Returns February 28
Held at the height of winter wine country, Lake County Barrels & Verticals returns on February 28, inviting wine lovers to experience the region in a way that goes far beyond a typical tasting. Organized by the Lake County Winery Association, this much-anticipated annual event offers an inside look at how Lake County wines are made, how they evolve over time, and what makes this high-elevation region so distinctive.
Rather than taking place at a single venue, Barrels & Verticals unfolds across participating wineries throughout Lake County, encouraging guests to explore the area’s scenic backroads, vineyard views, and welcoming tasting rooms. Each stop delivers something a little different, but all share a common focus on education, access, and meaningful interaction with the people behind the wines.
Barrel tastings allow guests to sample wines still in the aging process, drawn straight from the barrel before bottling. These unfinished wines offer a fascinating glimpse into how oak, time, and
winemaking choices shape the final product. It’s a rare opportunity to taste what’s ahead and to better understand the craftsmanship that happens long before a label is applied.
In addition to barrel tastings, wineries will also be pouring multiple vintages of the same wine side by side. Sampling wines across different years highlights how vintage conditions, aging, and cellar decisions influence flavor, texture, and structure. For both casual drinkers and seasoned enthusiasts, verticals provide an eye-opening lesson in how wines mature and develop character over time.
Because Barrels & Verticals takes place in late February, it also showcases Lake County during a quieter, more relaxed season. With fewer crowds and a slower pace, guests can linger, ask questions, and enjoy more personal conversations with winemakers and tasting room staff. The atmosphere is friendly and informal, making the event as approachable as it is informative.
Each participating winery brings its own style, varietals, and
perspective, collectively highlighting the diversity of Lake County’s terroir. From bold reds to elegant whites, the event underscores why the region continues to gain attention among California wine lovers.

• Gregory Graham Winery
