Why Winter Might Be Wine Country’s Best Season Winter in Wine Country has a magic all its own. As the vines rest and the crowds thin, Napa, Sonoma, and Lake counties reveal a quieter, more intimate side of themselves — one I cherish deeply and hope you’ll experience for yourself. From January through early spring, the hillsides come alive with brilliant yellow mustard flowers, transforming vineyard rows into a painterly landscape that feels both fleeting and unforgettable. Crisp mornings give way to sun-splashed afternoons, fireplaces glow in tasting rooms, and winemakers have a little more time to linger in conversation. In this issue, we set out to demystify one of wine’s most oftenmentioned (and misunderstood) topics: Pinot Noir clones. From the silky, berry-driven 777 to the spicy, structured 115 and the heritage Swan and Pommard selections, clones are not about superiority but about personality. Think of them as individual voices in a choir — each with its own tone, character, and flourish. When blended, they create the harmony that defines a winemaker’s style. Pinot Noir Clones

The Hidden Genetics Behind its Many Personalities BY MONTY PREISER There are those who profess to hate baseball, believing that much of it is a waste of time. Realistically, these people never realized how many options are in play on almost every pitch, but if they did, they may well have garnered a finer appreciation for the game. Life, including the enjoyment of wine, is much the same, where the more one knows, the better the experience. Sometimes even important lessons can be quite esoteric, as with our subject here regarding Pinot Noir clones. At the outset, I would opine that a mere wine writer/vintner like myself cannot accurately set out the nuances of clones and their modern usage. Thus, I asked questions of the noted overseer of the Pinot Noir program at Domaine Carneros, TJ Evans, who proved invaluable. Thanks, TJ. A clone is essentially a genetic copy of a specific vine that has been selected for its exceptional characteristics. The differentiation occurs in two ways - through breeding and through genetic mutation in the field. Pinot Noir, a very old variety of vine, is very prone to genetic mutation. When you combine the two above factors together, you get the tremendous diversity of grape material within the Pinot Noir family. There are reportedly over 1000 types of Pinot Noir in the world, 300 that are commercially important, and over 50 in California. While all Pinot Noir clones share the same basic DNA, subtle genetic variations create distinct differences in everything from berry size (affecting juice concentration), fertility (the number of seeds, which effect the strength of tannins), vigor (which has a profound impact on crop load), and skin thickness (impacting tannins, color, and flavor). Generally speaking, most winemakers blend a range of clones (sometimes only one) together, using them much like a chef would use a spice rack. Herein we examine the types primarily found in Sonoma, Napa, and Lake counties.

Domaine Carneros

Dijon Clones ::D ijon 115 is widely used. It shows red and black fruits and boasts silky tannins with a medium body. It is complex and ages well. ::D ijon 667 is arguably the most successful in the Dijon family. Hallmarks are firm tannins, good acidity, and dark color. Provides structure, foundation, depth, and concentration. It also comprises a stand-alone wine. ::D ijon 777 (commonly referred to as “trip 7”) is extremely popular and often used alone. It exhibits a perfumy nose followed by black fruits, violets, and exotic spices woven inside tannins of velvet and plush layered textures; adds complexity to the wine amd in demand most everywhere. Pommard Clone ::P ommard. Earthy with mushrooms is a common characteristic. It is rather thin-skinned, yet produces charming wines of noticeable fruit and spice. Due to its versatility, it is used in both still and sparkling wine (where too much color and intensity can be a liability).

California Heritage Clones: : : Martini is a full-bodied clone offering red cherries, firm tannins, and minerality. Great for aging. Its origin is a mystery, but ultimately the vine material was taken to the Louis Martini Winery in Napa where it was certified and earned its name. : : Swan was born in noted winemaker/vintner Joseph Swan’s vineyards. Though not widely planted, it is often favored by winemakers for its delicate nature and spicy/savory fruit profile. : : Mt. Eden (aka Clone 37) was identified with the help of the iconic Merry Edwards. It is prized for its aromatic intensity, refined tannins, and ageability. : : Calera selections were first planted in San Benito County They are quite in vogue and help bridge the gap between the older Heritage selections and newer ones from Dijon. Characterized by small berries and generally low yields, which result in intense color and good tannin structure suitable for aging.

As one might imagine, clonal selection is both an art and a science, and profoundly shapes what ends up in your glass. The finest of Pinot Noirs represent careful clonal selection, sitespecific adaptation, and dedicated winemaking. Understanding which clones are in a wine, why clones matter, and specifically what each clone brings to the table, enriches appreciation for the complexity and craftsmanship behind every bottle. Yet in the long run, clones are only one part of a vast matrix of elements that find their way into your glass. While the site determines a wine’s ultimate quality, the selected clones define the wine’s personality and style. Understanding them adds to the allure.

January through March means Mustard Season here in wine country, and visitors from all over arrive to marvel at the region’s transformation into a brilliant display of color and artistry. It is as though the world has quietly, magically reset itself: winter becomes a distant memory, and everywhere you look, the valley teems with sunshine-yellow life. Long before it became one of Wine Country’s most beloved seasonal sights, Jesuit priests planted mustard between vineyard rows out of simple necessity. Early growers sowed it as a cover crop, valuing its ability to enrich the soil, prevent erosion, and attract beneficial insects during the dormant winter months. Over time, what began as practical farming wisdom evolved into a defining visual signature of the region. Each winter and early spring, the bright yellow blooms return, threading their way between bare vines and signaling both renewal and continuity — a living reminder that Wine Country’s beauty is deeply rooted in thoughtful stewardship of the land. All throughout the valley, festivities celebrating this spectacular season will cater to every sense, and incredible food, wine and art are here to pair perfectly with the vibrant backdrop. Indulge in expressive wines at lively celebrations, enjoy unforgettable culinary experiences brought to you by some of the best chefs in the world, and, thanks to Napa Valley Mustard Celebration founder Jessel Miller, some wonderful works of local art. Miller, an artist herself and owner of the longest-running art gallery in Napa (Jessel Gallery), has long been dedicated to uplifting and preserving Napa Valley’s local art scene, so you can expect quite a few inspiring pieces to take center stage.

Each year, the celebration includes a featured artist, responsible for designing the official Napa Valley Mustard Celebration poster. This year’s featured artist is Paul Youngman, a Wisconsin-born Napa local who has been painting vivid oil renditions of wine country’s stunning landscapes since 1976. He has a knack for capturing the true essence of the valley in rich, extraordinary bursts of color, and his work for this year’s mustard season is no exception. Prints of the poster featuring Youngman’s painting, Winter into Spring, are available for purchase both online and at a number of Mustard Celebration events.

Mustard Season Celebrations & Events The celebration begins on January 17th with the Napa Valley Mustard Celebration Kick-Off Event at Silverado Resort in Napa, where, for $40, guests are invited to enjoy a variety of local wines alongside meticulously prepared pairings, all with the spirit of mustard season in mind. You’ll also be able to browse a wide variety of local vendors, each of which offer unique, exclusive goods, perfect for commemorating your mustard season visit. Each ticket holder will also receive a custom wine glass to mark the occasion. Then, head up-valley on January 22nd for the Yountville Art & Mustard Celebration, hosted at the Steve Rogers Gallery and Community Hall. Tickets are $25, and the evening will be all about the incredible art that this colorful season inspires. Browse works by local artists as you enjoy splashes of unique wines and bites as artfully prepared as the art itself! This curated exhibit that captures the breathtaking beauty of Napa Valley’s Wild Winter Mustard Season through the lens of talented photographers will continue through March 26 with The Photo Finale Closing Reception & People’s Choice Award presentation. February 7th-8th, Jessel Miller welcomes you to Jessel Gallery’s NVMV Celebration, which will feature art by a wide variety of talented Napa Valley artists. This year’s featured artist, Paul Youngman, will be there as well, so you’ll have the opportunity to chat with him about his work and even take a signed print home. Miller will also be hosting a similar artist demonstration event on the weekend of March 7th-8th, so you’ll have multiple chances to experience the artistry. Of course, in February, the smell of mustard blossoms isn’t

the only thing in the air — love is, too. Celebrate Valentine’s Day and Mustard Season at the Collings & Légère Art Gallery, where mustard-inspired beauty makes everything feel rosy. Enjoy complimentary hot chocolate with your sweetheart and discover the exquisite paintings of local impressionist artists Marta Collings and Thérèse Légère. St. Helena is getting in on the mustard season excitement, too, with a special Mustard Celebration Day at the St. Helena Welcome Center on Friday, February 27th. Savor seasonally inspired food and wine as you browse local photographer Rob Watermeyer’s works and soak in the lively atmosphere of this charming town coming to life. March brings mustard season to a close, and will be ending on a high note. RD Winery is hosting its own American Canyon Mustard Celebration Event on March 21st, featuring a variety of vendors as well as special musical performances by local youth programs. Then, as the final mustard season hurrah, the Culinary Institute of America at Copia in Downtown Napa is throwing a two-day Mustard Celebration Finale: A Festival of Wine, Food & Art on March 27th and 28th, where you will have the chance to try food, sip wines, and browse goodies from over 75 different artisans.
