Dragonhawks honor Greece Post 468 with Certificate of Appreciation
Delta Company, 2-10th As sault Helicopter Battalion, 10th Combat Aviation Brigade—nick named the “Dragonhawks”— presented the American Legion Greece Post 468 with a Certifi cate of Appreciation in recogni tion of the post’s steadfast sup port during their nine-month deployment to Kuwait.
Folklore from the under world of Warcraft describes Dragonhawks as fierce warrior riders who mount fire-breathing dragons, break enemy lines first, and patiently wait for the cav alry’s advance. In reality, Delta Company embodies that same tenacity and intensity, execut ing Operation Inherent Resolve missions far from home. Their battlefield is not a fantasy realm but the deserts of the Middle East, where their mission to “break the enemy’s armor” is literal and urgent.
Greece Post 468 demonstrated its commitment to the American Legion’s four pillars—Veterans Affairs, National Security, American ism, and Children & Youth—by adopting the Dragonhawks’ platoon. Contributions for the platoon program came from the American Legion’s four families– American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, Sons of The American Legion, and American Legion Riders as well as the Veterans of Foreign Wars and VFW Auxiliary chapters.

Artists Unlimited moves to new Greece location
by Tami Raco
Since 2002, Artists Unlimited has been providing individuals with developmental, physical, and intellectual disabilities with the opportunity to participate in the performing arts. This fall, the organization will move into its brand-new home at Studio 44, located at 4434 Dewey Avenue, on the corner of Latta Road in Greece.
The story of Artists Unlimited began nearly 25 years ago, sparked by a powerful moment of inspiration. Founder Ed Schram was attending an event at Holy Childhood when he heard a young boy singing in the audience. Moved by the child’s voice, he turned to the boy’s mother and said, “Your child should really be on stage.” Her emotional response—“Nobody wants my child”—was a turning point. Ed realized there were few, if any, inclusive spaces in theater for individuals with special needs.
Determined to change that, Ed began building what would become a one-of-a-kind theater program—one that offered a creative, expressive, and safe space for individuals who typically wouldn’t have access to the performing arts. Initially, the vision
had no financial backing. After being turned away by several potential sponsors, Ed and his wife took a bold step—they refinanced their home to make his dream a reality.
In 2002, Artists Unlimited launched its very first production at The German House in Rochester. The show was a resounding success, laying the foundation for what would become a beloved and growing program, supported by both local businesses and the special needs community.
After nine years, the group outgrew The German House and relocated to Kodak’s Theatre on the Ridge. Due to rising costs, they eventually moved again—this time to the Greece Performing Arts Center (GPAC) at Greece Athena High School. Now, with continued growth and success, the organization is thrilled to finally have a space of its own for rehearsals, meetings, and continued expansion.
“We needed our very own space,” said Mark DuPré, a member of the Artists Unlimited Board of Directors and longtime musical assistant. DuPré, a Columbia University graduate, former pastor, and current RIT adjunct professor, began volunteering with the organization after seeing their production of Beauty and the Beast. “It brought me to tears,” he shared. Inspired by the performers’ talent and heart, DuPré started helping with vocal coaching and eventually became Assistant Director and a board member.
The program now stages full-scale Broadway-style productions with colorful sets, professional costumes, an orchestra, and a dedicated stage crew. Past family-friendly shows include The Wizard of Oz, Cinderella, Mary Poppins, Peter Pan, Annie, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, and Shrek The Musical. Each production involves more than 250 behind-the-scenes volunteers and over 70 cast members. Productions are funded by corporate sponsors, individual donations, and ticket sales.
This November, Artists Unlimited will present its newest production—Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat—at the

“Strait Undercover”. He is the first and only disabled actor to play a lead role that did not call attention to his disability. Audiences who watch productions by Artists Unlimited, come to enjoy a show and leave deeply moved, often forgetting they’re watching performers with disabilities. “It’s the best community experience you will find—it’s life-changing,” he added.
To celebrate their new home, Artists Unlimited invites the community to an Open House on Wednesday, September 24 at 11 a.m. The event will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, tours of the new studio, and refreshments.

Greenlight Networks advances fiber rollout on Rochester’s west side
Fiber provider investing millions into infrastructure to reach new communities
Greenlight Networks, New York’s fastest growing fiber-to-thehome internet provider, is accelerating its fiber internet expansion plans across Rochester in 2025, including announcing several new buildouts in towns on the west side. Representing a $30 million investment, Greenlight is rapidly expanding its network footprint into new neighborhoods located throughout Greece, Gates, Chili and Hilton.
“Our hometown, Rochester, remains a critical part of our expansion strategy especially in communities that have historically lacked access to high-speed internet like those along the west side,” said Mark Murphy, Greenlight Network CEO. “We can all agree that connectivity is no longer a luxury. It’s the foundation for education, work, healthcare and opportunity. Having access to fiber infrastructure and reliable, fast – affordable – internet service will be a true gamechanger for these residents and businesses.”
From day one, the Rochester community has rallied behind Greenlight and championed its expansion plans throughout the area. Currently more than 135,000 homes are connected to the network, 40,000 households of which are across Rochester’s west side, including the towns of Greece, Gates, Chili, as well as the villages of Spencerport and Hilton.
West side expansion highlights include:
•Hilton: Greenlight first brought fiber internet to the village of Hilton in November 2024. Today, thousands of residents there have access to reliable, high-speed internet.
•Greece, Gates, and Chili: Expansion continues across these towns, with plans to connect an additional 12,000 homes by the end of this year.
•Spencerport: In June, construction began in the village of Spencerport. Once completed, the project will deliver high-speed fiber internet to thousands more homes.
The company’s recent movement into Hilton and Spencerport marked a major milestone for local residents, bringing fiber internet to these communities for the very first time. Greenlight has no plans of slowing down either, continuing its mission to deliver fast, reliable services across the region.
“Congratulations to Greenlight Networks on this exciting milestone. We appreciate their $30 million investment into our community, expanding their service area to be able to support new customers across Rochester’s west side. Access to reliable, affordable, high-speed internet is more important than ever to advance our region’s economic and community priorities, supporting business, education, community health, and many more needs. We are proud to have Greenlight Networks as a Greater Rochester Chamber member and look forward to supporting continued growth,” said Bob Duffy, President & CEO, Greater Rochester Chamber.
Founded in Henrietta, New York, Greenlight Networks has become one of the Northeast’s fastest growing fiber internet providers, earning record-high customer satisfaction rates along the way thanks to its radically different approach to service, price transparency and community investment. With speeds that are faster and more reliable than traditional providers, Greenlight’s customers experience seamless connectivity, ideal for streaming, remote work, gaming and video calls.
In addition to the west side, Greenlight announced earlier this year that the company has new expansions plans for Fairport and the town of Perinton, connecting more than 2,400 local homes by the end of 2025. In April, Greenlight also announced several out-of-state expansions in northeast and central Pennsylvania, as well as Baltimore, Maryland. The company is set to acquire NEPA’s Loop Internet company as well, which will further fuel expansion efforts along the Northeast.

Lakeview Community Church holding annual August Challenge
Lakeview Community Church, 30 Long Pond Road, (near Edgemere Drive), supports the Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf (GEFS) every month. However, August is a special month because they have their August Challenge. The goal this year is to collect 1,200 cans of baked beans or pork and beans.
There are many ways to participate. Those who are local may bring donations to Lakeview Church each Sunday morning or come to the church on Saturday, August 30, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. for a “drive up and drop off.” For those who find shopping difficult, organizers will do the shopping to turn cash or check donations into beans. Checks should be made out to “Lakeview Community Church” and put “August Challenge” on the memo
line. Those out of the area who would like to help may mail a check to 30 Long Pond Road, Rochester, NY 14612. Another option is to have Amazon ship donations of baked beans directly to the church (shipping should be free for Prime members). Those who are interested can also check the websites of local stores (Wegmans, Tops, Aldi’s, and Walmart) for their delivery policies and have beans delivered.
For information, call 317-3733 and leave a message. Check Westside News in September to find out how much was collected.
Lakeview is a small church that is determined to do big things in its community to help neighbors in need. All are invited to join in helping the church reach its goal of 1,200 cans.

GLS and The Flooring Department offer a one stop shop for construction needs
As a young teenager, Garett Schalge spent weekends working alongside his father, who was a contractor. He helped by picking up scraps and doing whatever labor was needed, never imagining that he was laying the foundation for his future career.
Garett spent a year in college studying architecture, but soon realized it wasn’t the right path for him. He left school and went to work full-time for his father to learn the trade. He spent the next decade refining his skills in the construction industry while at the same time building his own family.
Schalge said, “By the time I was 30, I had built a solid understanding of the trade, and I was offered a position as a foreman at a local roofing and siding company. During my five years there, I developed dreams of starting my own construction company.”
In 2013, that vision became a reality when Schalge founded GLS Construction Inc. “Over the past 12 years, I’ve built a loyal customer base and surrounded myself with a dedicated team that has been integral to the company’s growth,” he said.
The company has grown so much that, in 2024, GLS bought and completely remodeled the property at 9329 West Ridge Road to be their new headquarters and expanded further by launching a sister company, The Flooring Department, creating a local one-stop shop for all their clients’ construction needs.
The building has been home to several businesses over the years, from Holland Services which sold snowmobiles, to Clarkson Auto Electric, CMJ Customs auto repair shop, and Elmford Auto & Truck Center. It required quite a transformation to turn the property from an auto repair center to a construction headquarters and flooring showroom. The company celebrated with a showroom grand opening on September 28, 2024.
Together, GLS and its sister company handle new builds, all aspects of remodeling, and all phases of roofing, siding, windows, doors, hardwood flooring, carpet, laminate flooring, and vinyl for both residential and commercial clients. They are dedicated to providing professional, quality materials and work that offers a lifetime craftsmanship warranty on all services they provide.
Schalge said, “I am confident that with the hard work and determination that defines GLS Construction, we will continue to excel in the construction industry.”

From the office of Supervisor Bill Reilich
It has been a very active summer here in the Town of Greece. From food truck rodeos and summer concerts to the Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration, we have been happy to watch our community participate in and enjoy these beloved events.
The Town of Greece celebrated Arbor Day on August 12 with a Tree Planting Ceremony honoring the late Father Eugene Weis. Father Weis was born on February 1, 1936 and was ordained as a priest on June 2, 1962. Throughout his years of service, he was the beloved pastor of five parishes, including Our Mother of Sorrows and St. John the Evangelist churches in Greece. During his years of ministry, he served as Chaplain, fully trained volunteer fireman, certified driver of 24 different fire engines, and answered more than 1,000 fire calls. He was also a Charter Member of the NYS Association of Fire Chaplains and was awarded “Honorary Life Chaplain” of the North Greece Fire Department. The tree planted in his honor is the Autunm Blaze Maple and can be seen along the outdoor walking path on the Greece Town Campus.
This month on our Town Hall Campus we held another Food Truck Rodeo in conjunction with a Summer Concert featuring The Skycoasters. Hundreds joined us for a tasty treat from one of the many local food vendors and were entertained by the energetic band! Next month, we will host our final Food Truck and Summer Concert. This will be held on Friday, September 19, and will feature Carl Dixon’s Wild North Rock Show.
As always, I enjoy hearing feedback from residents about programming and other Town-related matters. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the town at 225-2000 or visit our website: www.greeceny.gov.

Lemonade stand helps neighborhood heal after fire
by Joanne Michielsen
Last year, Greece News shared the story
they begin the long journey of rebuilding and healing.
“As parents, my husband and I felt it was important for the kids on the street have a positive fire truck experience,” Lea said. “We went in person to invite the firemen to Stella’s lemonade stand. Lo and behold, they remembered her from last year, and they happily stopped by!”
The Ridge Road Fire District Chief brought along two trucks and his team, too. The firemen met with all the kids, gifted them with fire hats and stickers, and let them all take turns sitting in the driver seat of the truck.
Lea said that it was an amazing experience for the kids. “The fire chief was honking down the street and exclaiming, ‘Stella has the best lemonade stand in town!’ The kids all pitched in to help with lemonade stand, and they all had pompoms and were waving the chief down!”
Lea said, “They all left with smiles on their faces, and we hope the experience brought each child comfort amidst any of the worry and/or sadness they may have felt.”
