A WEEKEND OF BIO ENERGY AND ACTIVE MEDITATION, SHAMANIC TRANCE DANCE AND MESSAGES FROM THE UNIVERSE

Driving to the heart of the Cotswolds, I made my journey to Whatley Manor. Walking through its archway and into the courtyard, I felt an immediate wave of calm wash over me. It wasn’t just the beauty of the manor’s architecture or its 12 acres of meticulously designed gardens that captivated me. It was something more—a palpable energy, a serene aura that enveloped me as I entered. The sprawling grounds and labyrinthine hallways took a couple of days to navigate fully, but that only added to the sense of being wonderfully lost in time.
This was the start of a weekend that would leave me feeling deeply connected, not just to the people I was with but to myself in ways I hadn’t imagined. The retreat was led by the extraordinary Parvati Devis, whose presence brought warmth, laughter, and deep wisdom to an intimate group of six participants. Though she modestly calls herself a YogaShaking practitioner, Parvati embodies a healer, a guide, and a sage.
Before meeting the group for our first meal together, I retreated to my room—an oasis in itself with a bed so large I felt like royalty. A quick refresh later, I found myself at the Aquarias Spa, a place of relaxation with its thermal suite, hydrotherapy pool, heated stone recliners, and salt scrub showers. The spa was the perfect way to clear my mind and reset my body, preparing me for the experiences that lay ahead.

Our retreat began early the next morning, at 7 a.m., with a practice that intrigued and surprised me—YogaShaking. To the uninitiated, the idea of shaking vigorously for an hour might seem odd, even unsettling. But this practice is deeply rooted in ancient wisdom. By shaking, we hydrate the fascia, the connective tissue in our bodies that links to the nervous system. Like animals that shake to release tension after a stressful event, humans can use shaking as a reset for the nervous system. The benefits extend beyond physical relaxation; shaking helps release trapped energy, reduce cortisol levels, and bring the body back into balance.
Parvati’s guidance blended ancient practices with modern understanding. The shaking and mantra chanting that followed were designed not just to release physical tension but also to connect us with a deeper part of ourselves. After the session, I felt lighter, grounded, and incredibly energised. Since returning home, I’ve made shaking a part of my daily routine, even if just for 15 minutes in the morning, and I feel the difference in my overall wellbeing.
The retreat’s theme revolved around active meditation techniques—a refreshing departure from the still, silent practices that many associate with meditation. We learned methods that combined movement, sound, and intention, engaging both the mind and body. For someone like me, who has always struggled with sitting in silence, active meditation was a revelation. Through movement, I found my mind quieting, and a sense of peace emerging that I had never before experienced.
Parvati taught us to channel our life force energy through these

practices, clearing blockages and restoring balance to our chakras. By the end of each session, I felt more centered, present, and alive. These active meditations—whether through shaking, sound baths, or chanting—helped reduce my stress and bring a sense of mental clarity that I carried with me after the weekend ended. During the retreat, we were introduced to Active Heart Meditation using Osho No Dimensions music—a deeply moving practice that resonated with many of us, and one that a few of us have continued to embrace long after the weekend ended.
Throughout the weekend, we were treated to the soothing and transformative experience of the gong played by Eloise, who also offers Yoga at the hotel. Using a combination of Tibetan bowls, a powerful primordial sounding conch shell, and the deep resonating vibrations of a gong, which took us into a state of deep relaxation on both days. Known for reducing stress, improving sleep, and promoting emotional healing, sound baths create a meditative state that allows the body to reset. It was a calming, rejuvenating practice that left me feeling centered and deeply refreshed. On one of the days the sound bath was the ideal accompaniment to Parvati’s hands-on healing session.
One of the most profound experiences of the weekend was my introduction to Shamanic Trance Dance. Evolved from the ancient traditions of Shamanism, this blindfolded dance was unlike anything I had ever done. With rhythmic, compelling music, we moved spontaneously, guided by our intuition rather than thought. Fire breath exercises and focused intention transported us into a trance-like

state where time seemed to dissolve, and we were free to explore our inner landscapes.
The dance felt like a sacred journey, an opportunity to break free from the limitations of ordinary life and tap into something extraordinary. In that space, I felt both liberated and deeply connected to something larger than myself. It was exhilarating, healing, and undeniably transformative.
One thing I’ve learned on retreats is to remain open to the unexpected signs and symbols that often appear. For me, this came in the form of a tiny beetle. As I sat at lunch, I felt a small tickle on my shoulder. A beetle had landed there and, after I gently brushed it away, it found its way back to me twice. It seemed so determined to stay near, and I felt an odd connection to this little creature.
Later, I looked up the shamanic meaning of beetles and discovered that they symbolise resilience, persistence, and transformation—qualities I had been reflecting on in my own life. The beetle’s message was clear: no matter the challenges, I had the strength to move forward, to transform and grow. It was a small yet profound moment that felt like a direct answer from the universe.
As dusk settled on my second evening, we gathered for a fire ceremony, a powerful practice for releasing the old and making space for the new. The flickering flames symbolised renewal, and as I stood before the fire, I knew exactly what I needed to let go of—my old stories, limiting beliefs, and self-doubt. In their place, I invited new possibilities, growth, and acceptance. The ceremony was a cathartic, cleansing experience, marking a key moment in my journey.

Throughout the weekend, the connections I made with the other participants grew deeper. Each of us brought our own stories, challenges, and energies, and by the end, we felt like a family. We laughed, cried, and shared experiences that will stay with me forever. There’s something about the intensity and openness of a retreat that fosters these soul-deep connections. I feel immense gratitude not just for the retreat itself, but for the people I met, each of whom contributed to the magic of the experience.
Whatley Manor, with its storied history and peaceful gardens, provided the perfect backdrop for this journey of healing and transformation. Its energy is palpable, a blend of past and present, where every corner seems to hold a story. From its Michelin-starred dining to the luxurious spa, Whatley Manor is more than just a hotel—it’s a sanctuary for the soul.
As I reflect on the weekend, I am filled with gratitude for the experience, for Parvati’s wisdom, for the beautiful souls I met, and for the profound healing that took place. Although the retreat has ended, the lessons and connections remain, continuing to ripple through my life in the most unexpected and wonderful ways.
Whatley Manor will forever hold a special place in my heart, and I know this retreat was just the beginning of a journey that will unfold in ways I can’t yet predict.

Whatley Manor officially opened its doors on July 1st, 2003, but its history dates back to the 18th century when it served as a farmhouse on the Twatley Farm estate. Since 2000, the Landolt family has lovingly cared for the property, overseeing a complete restoration and redesign of its gardens, returning them to their original ‘Arts & Crafts’ style. In addition to its beautifully restored grounds, a luxurious spa was introduced, along with the Stable Suite, which now serves as a venue for private events.

WORDS: RACHEL BRANSON
In the heart of South Kensington, London, lies SUHAKU, one of the first clinics in the UK to introduce a remarkable Japanese wellness innovation—hydrogen inhalation therapy. Known for its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, this littleknown therapy is gaining attention for its ability to rejuvenate both body and mind. Whether you’re looking to address the strains of modern life or simply indulge in cutting-edge wellness, SUHAKU offers a serene escape with a comprehensive menu of treatments designed to combat stress, inflammation, aging, and the harmful effects of overusing digital devices.
Hydrogen therapy is rooted in Japan, where it has been studied extensively for its benefits in treating various health conditions. The therapy involves inhaling molecular hydrogen (H₂) gas, a powerful antioxidant known to target and neutralise harmful free radicals in the body, particularly the hydroxyl radical. Free radicals can contribute to cellular damage, inflammation, and chronic disease. By inhaling hydrogen, the body is able to fight oxidative stress at a cellular level, promoting healing, reducing inflammation, and improving overall well-being. At SUHAKU, the team has tailored six different hydrogen therapy treatments to address specific needs, including Stress, AntiInflammation, Detox, Computer Overuse, Anti-Aging, and Peak Performance. Each treatment combines hydrogen inhalation with traditional techniques like acupressure for a holistic experience that not only rejuvenates the body but also brings deep relaxation and balance.
As someone who spends hours in front of a computer, I was particularly intrigued by the Computer Overuse treatment. SUHAKU has developed this 45-minute session to combat the fatigue, eye strain, and mental exhaustion that come from long periods of screen exposure. The therapy consisted of 30 minutes of acupressure massage on my hands, shoulders, neck, and head, followed by 15 minutes of hydrogen inhalation and hydrogen under goggles to target eye strain. From the moment the treatment began, I felt an immediate sense of calm. The
acupressure was deeply relaxing, and I could feel the tension in my neck and shoulders begin to melt away. As the soothing rhythm of the massage continued, I drifted into a peaceful state, even falling asleep briefly— something I didn’t expect! The gentle hum of the hydrogen inhalation device and the cooling sensation of hydrogen under the goggles created a sense of lightness around my eyes and face, relieving the strain caused by hours of screen use.
By the end of the session, I felt incredibly refreshed and calm. Not only did I leave SUHAKU with clearer, more relaxed eyes, but the overall sense of mental clarity and relaxation was remarkable. It was as if a weight had been lifted, both physically and mentally. The sluggishness and strain I had felt before the session were gone, and I could feel the effects lasting well into the evening.
An intriguing part of the treatment involved capillary function analysis before and after the session. Using a non-invasive method to observe the capillaries under my nail bed, I could see how the blood flow improved significantly after the therapy. Before treatment, the capillaries were well-defined but sluggish, meaning the blood flow was slow, likely due to oxidative stress and inflammation. After 45 minutes, the movement had greatly improved, showcasing how quickly hydrogen therapy can enhance microcirculation.
This improvement in capillary function is a key indicator of the therapy’s effectiveness. By enhancing microcirculation, hydrogen therapy boosts oxygen delivery and nutrient flow to tissues, while also helping the body remove waste products more efficiently. This not only improves overall energy and cellular health but also offers long-term benefits for cardiovascular health, immune function, and even anti-aging. By reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, hydrogen therapy supports healthy aging and protects against chronic diseases linked to poor circulation and inflammation, such as heart disease and neurodegenerative conditions. Remarkable Results: Beyond Relaxation While my experience was focused on
relieving the effects of computer overuse, SUHAKU has seen remarkable results from clients using hydrogen therapy for a wide range of health concerns. Many have found relief from chronic inflammation, stress-related conditions, and even serious illnesses like cancer. Inflammation is a key driver of many chronic diseases, and hydrogen’s ability to reduce inflammatory markers makes it a promising complementary therapy for those dealing with inflammatory disorders. Similarly, those suffering from stress or burnout have reported significant improvements in mental clarity, relaxation, and overall well-being after their sessions.
The clinic’s anti-aging and peak performance treatments are also popular, especially among those looking to maintain youthful vitality and support cognitive function. Regular treatments help reduce oxidative damage at the cellular level, slowing the aging process and improving skin, energy levels, and mental sharpness.
At SUHAKU, you’ll find more than just a treatment—you’ll experience a wellness journey rooted in the ancient wisdom of Japanese healing combined with the latest scientific innovations. Whether you’re seeking relief from the everyday stresses of modern life, looking to boost your performance, or hoping to improve your overall health and longevity, SUHAKU offers a haven of tranquility and expertise.
For anyone looking to invest in their wellbeing, this Japanese hydrogen therapy offers a gentle yet powerful solution to address both short-term discomfort and long-term health concerns. The improvements in microcirculation, reductions in inflammation, and deeply relaxing effects make it a standout option for those ready to explore cutting-edge wellness therapies in the heart of London.
With treatments designed for relaxation, rejuvenation, and healing, SUHAKU is leading the way in bringing the best of Japanese hydrogen therapy to the UK. If you’re ready to experience this remarkable therapy for yourself, book an appointment today and take the first step towards a healthier, more balanced you.

As chronic disease rates reach unprecedented levels and health solutions are increasingly reduced to prescriptions, the documentary First Do No Pharm dares to ask a critical question: Is our healthcare system truly serving the people, or has it been hijacked by profit-driven corporations? I had the privilege of sitting down with Dr. Aseem Malhotra, the driving force behind this powerful documentary, following its premiere at The Odeon, Leicester Square, London. His unflinching dedication to uncovering the truth behind Big Pharma’s influence on modern medicine could shake the very foundations of the medical community.
For those who have yet to see it, First Do No Pharm is an urgent call to action. It exposes the commodification of our health, revealing how pharmaceutical giants have exploited the medical system for decades, prioritising profits over patient wellbeing. Once you’ve watched the film, you can’t unlearn what you’ve seen. It’s an awakening for anyone who cares about their health and the future of healthcare.
Despite the glamour that often surrounds the world of pharmaceuticals, the reality is far less polished. Between 2003 and 2016, the top ten drug companies paid a staggering $33 billion in fines for illegal marketing, hiding harmful data, and manipulating clinical trial results. Yet, even these penalties barely scratch the surface of their profits. These companies make more money from the sale of their drugs than they lose from legal fines. Dr. Malhotra points out that this relentless pursuit of profit meets the clinical definition of psychopathy: a callous disregard for others, deceitfulness, and an incapacity for guilt.
In the film, viewers learn that
pharmaceutical companies often conduct their own clinical trials and are not required to have their findings independently verified. This shocking lack of oversight means that much of the research that informs medical practices is potentially biased or incomplete. Journals that doctors rely on for cuttingedge information are heavily funded by the very industries they should be scrutinising. In the U.S., where drug companies can advertise directly to consumers, public trust is manipulated, encouraging unnecessary medications and treatments.
In the UK, while direct-to-consumer pharmaceutical advertising is not permitted, drug companies have found other ways to influence both doctors and patients. Pharmaceutical representatives, or “drug reps,” frequently visit GP surgeries armed with glossy promotional materials and industry-funded studies that highlight the supposed benefits of their products. These reps are often incentivised to push specific medications, creating an environment where GPs are encouraged to prescribe the latest drugs, even when non-pharmaceutical interventions may be more appropriate. Furthermore, many illnesses are subtly promoted in health articles found in popular magazines and online platforms, often funded or influenced by pharmaceutical companies. These articles can prompt readers to self-diagnose based on vague symptoms, urging them to request specific medications from their GPs. This cycle not only perpetuates overmedication but also shifts the focus away from addressing root causes of health issues, with lifestyle changes taking a back seat to the convenience of a prescription.
Dr. Malhotra, who has spent over 15 years advocating for evidence-based medicine, believes this gross injustice needs immediate attention. “We won’t fix the root cause without addressing the commercial distortions of scientific evidence,” he told me. His hope is that First Do No Pharm will be the wake-up call we desperately need.
Dr. Malhotra is no stranger to controversy. His work on statins—drugs prescribed to lower cholesterol—has challenged the mainstream medical consensus. While statins are widely believed to be the cornerstone of heart disease prevention, Malhotra’s research suggests otherwise. “The current approach to
prescribing statins is overly simplistic,” he explains. “Cholesterol is not the enemy; lifestyle factors like diet, stress, and inflammation play a far greater role in heart disease.” His studies reveal that for many patients, statins offer minimal benefits and come with risks, including muscle pain, fatigue, and a higher likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes. Instead of leaning so heavily on pharmaceuticals, Malhotra advocates for a more holistic approach. “Doctors aren’t trained to look for the root cause of disease,” he explains. “We treat the body like a machine made up of parts, prescribing pills for each malfunction. But this approach is flawed, especially when lifestyle changes could do more than medication ever could.” For Malhotra, the Mediterranean diet—rich in healthy fats, vegetables, and lean protein—is a far more effective tool in the battle against heart disease.
From a young age, Dr. Malhotra’s passion for food and cooking, which began at 16, played a pivotal role in shaping his understanding of health, with his famous chicken curry at the University of Edinburgh becoming a symbol of his belief that nutrition is fundamental to wellbeing—a belief that later fuelled his questioning of traditional medical practices as a junior doctor.
Dr. Malhotra’s passion for reform goes far beyond statins and heart disease. He highlights three major flaws in modern healthcare: a lack of focus on root causes, poor emphasis on lifestyle and nutrition, and inadequate patient consent. “Doctors are excellent at diagnosing illnesses, but they’re not trained to treat the underlying cause,” he notes. This, combined with an overwhelming reliance on pharmaceuticals, means that many chronic conditions are merely managed, not cured.
The solution, he argues, is simple but not easy: “We could fix the NHS in a year by prioritising lifestyle over prescriptions, holding pharmaceutical companies accountable, and empowering doctors to have honest, informed conversations with their patients.”
Yet, this change is hindered by a deeply ingrained system of greed and corruption. “The pharmaceutical industry controls what information reaches doctors,” Malhotra says, his frustration palpable. “And the truth is, they’re not interested in preventing disease. Prevention doesn’t sell drugs.”
Throughout his career, Dr. Malhotra has faced numerous challenges. He has been vilified by colleagues, faced legal action, and endured threats. Yet, his resolve remains unwavering. “It’s not just about my work,” he tells me. “This is about giving people the tools to take back control of their health and demanding a better healthcare system.” His bravery is not without personal sacrifice, but he firmly believes that First Do No Pharm can ignite a movement for change.
His passion for this cause is contagious, and his willingness to speak truth to power has garnered him both admiration and scorn. As he prepares to present the film at the U.S. Senate on Capitol Hill, one can’t help but wonder: Could this be the tipping point that finally forces the medical establishment to rethink its relationship with Big Pharma?
Dr. Malhotra’s final words to me were a call to action: “If we have something to say, then silence is a lie. Knowledge without action is vanity. And action without knowledge is insanity.” The truth is now in our hands, and it’s up to us to act on it.
First Do No Pharm isn’t just a film; it’s a movement. It challenges us to question the status quo, to seek the truth, and to fight for a healthcare system that puts people before profits. Dr. Malhotra’s work reminds us that the battle for health is not just one fought in hospitals and clinics—it’s a fight against a system that has lost its way.
I urge you to watch First Do No Pharm and, more importantly, share it. Discuss it with your family, your friends, and your doctors. Make your voice heard and demand a healthcare system that serves us all. We are at the beginning of what could be the most significant healthcare revolution of our time.
In Dr. Malhotra’s words, “Wisdom without courage is fruitless.” Let this film be the courage we need to take back control of our health and create a future where truth, not profits, guides medical care.

When Jacob Dolley stood on the edge of a railway bridge one fateful evening, he faced a decision that would alter the course of his life. In that moment, he could either succumb to the overwhelming despair or seek a path to healing. By some miracle, Jacob chose the latter. Today, I sit across from him in a cosy local café, discussing the release of his new book, Calm After the Storm—a work that he holds with immense pride and gratitude.
As a parent of a teenager, I can only begin to fathom the anguish his parents must have felt when they learned the depths of his despair. For Jacob, opening up about his darkest thoughts and fears was an act of immense courage. As we chat about those days, I’m reminded of my own struggles during adolescence—dark thoughts I thought I was alone in facing. Perhaps, like me, many of us grapple with these challenges growing up, navigating the turbulent waters of puberty, hormones, academic pressures, and the quest to find ourselves.
For Jacob, support came in the form of a loving family and a therapist who encouraged him to express his emotions on paper. What began as a therapeutic exercise soon transformed into a lifeline—song lyrics that evolved into poetry. In school, poetry had seemed irrelevant, uninspiring. But in his darkest moments, it became a life line, guiding him out of despair.
Seeing Jacob’s enthusiasm as he talks about his poetry and the journey of creating his book, it’s hard to imagine that only a few years ago he was in such a dark place. The simple act of transferring his thoughts onto paper not only had a profound impact
on his own life but has now become a tool through which he hopes to touch the lives of others. Calm After the Storm is more than just a collection of his thoughts, feelings, and experiences - it’s a movement—a powerful reflection of the impact of words, vulnerability, and hope.”
In addition to his writing, Jacob discovered a local event called ‘WordUp,’ an open mic night that welcomes songwriters, poets, and comedians to share their creative talents. He encourages everyone to find their own “thing,” emphasising that while poetry might not resonate with everyone, the act of putting feelings into words can be a powerful starting point. Poetry saved Jacob’s life, and now he hopes his poetry can inspire others, showing them that they are not alone, that there is always hope, and that they are deeply loved.
Before our meeting, I had the chance to listen to Jacob’s spoken word poem, Don’t Die Today; Die Tomorrow. It portrays a typical conversation between two friends but with a profound message on how to potentially save a life. Dedicated to Men’s Mental Health Month, the poem is featured in Calm After the Storm. Jacob highlights a harrowing statistic: by the time he finishes reading the poem, seven men will have taken their own lives—one every 40 seconds. This is a statistic that he is determined to change.
The poem is a poignant call to action, and I urge you to watch and share it. It may just save someone’s life. Jacob’s poetry has already made a significant impact, with individuals reaching out to thank him for sharing his journey and giving them the permission to be vulnerable. In a society where men are often taught to suppress their emotions and “tough it out,” Jacob’s work is a powerful reminder that opening up can be a lifesaving act.
Men’s mental health is an area that has been shrouded in silence for far too long. According to the World Health Organisation, men are three to four times more likely to die by suicide than women. This alarming statistic underscores the urgent need for more open conversations about mental health, particularly among men. Jacob’s story illustrates how vulnerability can lead to healing, offering a blueprint for others to follow. Generations before us rarely spoke about mental health. The stigma attached to it was suffocating—admitting to struggling with mental health was often seen as a sign of weakness. But talking with Jacob gives me hope for the future. The younger generation is not afraid to confront their demons, to share their darkest thoughts, and in doing so, they are creating a ripple effect of hope. They are proving that no matter how deep the darkness, there is always light around the corner, a new adventure waiting to unfold.
As Jacob prepares to head off to university to further his studies in creative writing, he does so with a sense of purpose and excitement for the future. His writing has already touched many lives, and there’s no doubt it will continue to do so. By sharing his story, Jacob is not only helping to break the stigma surrounding men’s mental health, but he is also providing a lifeline to those who may feel lost and alone.
Jacob’s journey reminds us all that even in our darkest moments, there is a way forward, a path to healing, and a world of possibilities waiting just around the corner.

Looking for your next unforgettable wellness vacation? California’s Central Valley is a hidden gem, offering an unbeatable mix of outdoor adventure, fresh farm-to-table cuisine, and rich cultural heritage. Linked by the historic Route 99, this fertile region not only supplies more than 40% of the nation’s produce but also serves up some of the most unique and luxurious travel experiences you’ll find in the United States. Whether you’re a foodie, an outdoor enthusiast, or simply looking to recharge, Central Valley has it all.
California’s Central Valley is often called the agricultural heartland of the U.S., and for good reason. This region is responsible for an astounding 60% of the nation’s fruits and nuts, and a whopping 25% of America’s total food supply. Yolo County and surrounding areas are where the land yields everything from almonds and walnuts to fresh peaches, grapes, and leafy greens. If you’ve ever enjoyed fresh produce, there’s a good chance it came from here. That alone makes this region a must-visit for food lovers and wellness seekers looking for the freshest farm-to-table experiences.
Route 99, which runs through the heart of Central Valley, serves as the perfect scenic route for exploring everything this region has to offer. As you travel through towns like Lodi, Modesto, Fresno, and

Bakersfield, you’ll be greeted by miles of vineyards, orchards, and fields. The community spirit in these towns is palpable, with residents celebrating their agricultural heritage through local festivals, farm tours, and farmer’s markets.
Each stop along Route 99 offers something unique. Lodi is known for its award-winning wineries, while Modesto is home to Sciabica’s— the oldest olive oil producer in the U.S. Further south, Fresno and Bakersfield provide access to California’s famous national parks.
For outdoor enthusiasts, Central Valley offers easy access to some of the most iconic national parks in the world. Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon boast more than 350 miles of trails, rivers, lakes, and forests. Whether you’re hiking, fishing, or simply enjoying the beauty of the great outdoors, these parks are perfect for adventurers looking to escape and reconnect with nature. You can explore Yosemite’s stunning granite cliffs and waterfalls, trek through Sequoia’s towering trees, or enjoy Kings Canyon’s dramatic landscapes. Each park offers a unique experience and a chance to recharge your mind, body, and soul.
The farm-to-table movement thrives here, making Central Valley a foodie’s dream come true. The region’s restaurants pride themselves on using only the freshest ingredients, straight from the local farms. From gourmet dining to casual eateries, every meal in Central Valley showcases the best of California’s produce.
A standout experience is the opportunity to taste locally crafted olive oil. I recently attended a tasting of artisan olive oils from Sciabica’s in Modesto, and it was a revelation. Sciabica’s has been cold-pressing olive oil in California since 1936, making them the oldest olive oil producer in the United States. Their oils are made in small batches with no additives or artificial flavourings, ensuring the highest quality and flavour. Sciabica’s extra virgin olive oils are sustainably farmed, GMO-free, and offer a taste like no other. The difference between this and what you’ll find on most supermarket shelves is clear: while many commercial olive oils are refined using heat and chemicals, extra virgin olive oil is produced without heat, preserving the rich flavour and nutritional benefits of the olives.
This dedication to quality and craftsmanship is what makes Central Valley’s food scene so special. From olive oil to almonds and seasonal vegetables, the region’s bounty provides the freshest ingredients for both home cooks and top chefs alike.
Beyond its agricultural riches, Central Valley is also a haven for craft beverage enthusiasts. With a vibrant wine scene in Lodi, flourishing breweries in Modesto and Fresno, and distilleries crafting unique spirits, there’s no shortage of delicious drinks to sample. Wineries here offer everything from bold Zinfandels to crisp Chardonnays, while local breweries experiment with fresh hops and seasonal flavors. Whether you prefer a glass of local wine, a handcrafted beer, or a creative cocktail, you’ll find something to please your palate.
Central Valley’s community spirit shines through its rich cultural offerings. Local festivals celebrate everything from the almond blossom season (a breathtaking sight that lasts about four weeks each spring) to the region’s deep agricultural roots. The arts are also alive and well here, with studio art, live performances, and music festivals adding to the vibrant local culture. Be sure to visit the Fossil Discovery Center to explore the region’s ancient history, or dive into its Wild West past in towns like Oakdale, once famous as the “Cowboy Capital of the World.”

INTERVIEW WITH ROB AND JOSIE DA BANK ON SLOMO AND THE POWER OF CONTRAST THERAPY
When you think of Rob and Josie da Bank, wellness may not be the first thing that comes to mind. Known for organising eclectic music festivals and Rob’s time as a BBC Radio DJ, their background is steeped in the world of creativity, music, and cultural experiences. However, over the past few years, the couple has ventured into a different space—one that is centred on wellbeing, mindfulness, and connection. Their wellness project, Slomo, brings together sauna, cold-water immersion, and mindfulness practices to create an experience that rejuvenates both body and mind.
In this interview, we explore their journey from the festival scene to wellness entrepreneurship, and how their personal practices evolved into Slomo, a thriving contrast therapy venture that’s making waves across the UK.
A Journey into Wellness
“Our wellness journey began in India,” Rob shares. “We started practicing transcendental meditation and yoga in our early 20s, and it’s something that’s been with us ever since.” Meditation has been central to their lives for years, and it was this foundation that led them down the path of wellness.
“We’ve been meditating together since our early 20s,” Josie adds. “It’s been a consistent practice in our lives, and we’ve tried so many different methods over the years—everything from breathwork to sound healing.”
Their shared interest in wellness isn’t just about individual practice; it’s woven into the fabric of their lives. Rob and Josie have been on a spiritual and wellness journey together since they met at university. Whether through yoga, meditation, or their eclectic creative pursuits, they’ve sought balance.
Over the years, they’ve both trained in different areas of mindfulness and healing. Rob is currently working toward completing a sound healing course, while Josie is engaged in a Shamanic Kundalini teacher training program. It’s clear that their personal evolution has inspired Slomo, the wellness business that combines their passion for mental and physical well-being.
From Cold Water Rituals to Slomo Slomo may have started at a festival in 2018, but its origins run much deeper. The duo’s fascination with cold-water therapy began as a family tradition.
“Robbie’s grandfather, Chappie, swam in cold water every single day of his life. When he passed away, Rob took up the ritual, and it just became a part of our lives,” Josie recalls. “It’s now a daily routine for Rob, and something that’s become second nature—like meditation.”
Living close to the sea allows them to indulge in regular cold water swims, but with Slomo, they wanted to make this experience accessible to everyone, not just those with easy access to natural bodies of water. The concept behind Slomo is simple: to provide an accessible and community-centred space for contrast therapy, combining the soothing heat of saunas with the invigorating chill of ice baths.
Rob explains, “Contrast therapy—alternating between hot and cold—has so many benefits. Whether you’re stepping into a sauna to relax or braving an ice bath to reset, it’s all about taking a moment to slow down and recharge.”
The growing popularity of contrast therapy in the UK is no accident. Science has shown that alternating between heat and cold can have profound effects on both physical and mental health.
Saunas have long been used in many cultures, from the Finnish tradition of sauna bathing to Japanese onsen and Turkish hammams. These heat therapies promote circulation, relieve muscle tension, and support detoxification. But when combined with cold exposure, such as plunging into an ice bath or swimming in cold water, the benefits are amplified.
Research has shown that contrast therapy improves circulation, enhances immune function, and reduces inflammation. Heat causes blood vessels to dilate, increasing circulation and helping to relax the muscles. When followed by cold immersion, the sudden constriction of blood vessels forces blood back to the core, boosting heart rate and stimulating circulation. Over time, this alternation helps lower blood pressure, reduce joint pain, and even improve skin health.
Beyond the physical benefits, cold exposure has been linked to mental health improvements, such as reduced stress, anxiety, and symptoms of depression. Cold-water swimming, for example, triggers the release of endorphins—the body’s natural “feel-good” chemicals— resulting in mood elevation and a sense of euphoria. For Rob, this is one of the reasons he’s so passionate about his cold-water swims.
“If I’m in a good mood, a cold dip just makes it better. And if

I’m having a bad day, it completely shifts my energy,” he says. “It’s such a simple but effective way to reset.”
Creating a Community Around Wellness
Slomo has evolved into more than just a wellness pop-up at festivals. It’s now a thriving business with locations across the UK, including at scenic spots like Compton Bay on the Isle of Wight, Christchurch, and Tapnell Farm. These locations are designed to offer guests an immersive wellness experience in nature, with wood-fired Nordic saunas, ice baths, fire pits, and lounging areas where guests can fully unplug from their busy lives.
“At Slomo, we wanted to create a space where people can truly relax and reconnect with themselves,” Josie explains. “It’s not just about the saunas or the ice baths; it’s about creating an environment where people can slow down, have meaningful conversations, and enjoy a digital detox.”
Their festivals have always had a wellness hub, but with Slomo, the da Banks wanted to offer a year-round experience. With plans to bring the concept to more urban locations, including the possibility of a London pop-up next year, Slomo is poised to make contrast therapy more accessible to city dwellers.
“The idea is that you don’t need to belong to an exclusive club or have a gym membership to enjoy the benefits of saunas and coldwater therapy,” Rob adds. “We want to create an alternative night
out, where you can leave your phone behind, have a great conversation with a friend, and wake up the next day feeling refreshed, without a hangover.”
With sauna and ice-bath locations and exciting plans for more, Rob and Josie are just getting started. The communal aspect of their wellness hubs is key. “People need spaces where they can come together, without the distractions of modern life,” Josie says. “Whether you’re coming as an individual or with a group, there’s something so powerful about sharing this experience.”
The da Banks also emphasise that Slomo is a family-friendly venture. Their children often join in the sauna and ice bath sessions, and they hope to inspire younger generations to embrace wellness as part of their daily lives.
As for what’s next? Rob and Josie hinted at exciting plans for future expansions, with a focus on creating more accessible wellness hubs across the UK. Whether it’s an intimate setting by the sea or an urban oasis in the heart of the city, Slomo is redefining the wellness experience.
They will also be opening the UK’s first mobile public floating sauna on the Isle of Wight as part of their Slomo Winter Warmer offering at Tapnell Farm.
Bringing a Scandinavian-inspired wellness experience to the

island, the Slomo Winter Warmer contrast therapy hub opening on the 7 November, will also feature two wood-fired Nordic saunas with views over the lake, a 7ft diameter ice-cold plunge tank for six people and a hygge inspired lounging area complete with fire pit. Guests can also enjoy optional extras like the Himalayan salt and rose body scrubs or indulge in thermal massages. The wild spa is fully equipped with showers, changing areas and offers free parking.
In celebration of the opening, Root2Rise will be hosting a oneoff Wim Hof Method Fundamentals Workshop at Tapnell on Saturday 9 November. The five-hour workshop will focus on the three pillars of the Wim Hof Method: Breathing Technique, Cold Exposure and Commitment, teaching participants how to utilise oxygen and cold exposure to optimise body and mind to help you rise and thrive.
Rob shared his excitement, saying: “Josie and I and our crack team of sauna aficionados have been beavering away on this project for over a year now and we’re in the final stages of finishing our floating sauna. We cannot wait for a winter of floating whilst steaming, dipping in the lake and our awesome six-person ice bath. Contrast therapy at its finest!”

If you’re looking for an alternative way to unwind, Slomo’s contrast therapy offerings might just be the perfect escape. From the soothing heat of Nordic saunas to the invigorating chill of ice baths, this unique blend of ancient practices and modern wellness is transforming the way we approach health and relaxation.
For those ready to dive into the world of contrast therapy, Slomo’s locations are as serene as they are invigorating. Whether you visit Tapnell Farm with its lakeside views, Christchurch with its tranquil riverside setting, or Compton Bay with its stunning seaside vistas, each site offers a communal experience that feels like a much-needed retreat from the chaos of daily life.
As Josie puts it, “At the heart of it all, we just love making people happy—creating moments that help shift negative energy and leave you feeling lighter and brighter.” And with Slomo, that’s exactly what they’re doing.

The Michelin star has long been a symbol of excellence in the culinary world, signifying restaurants that deliver not just exceptional food but an unforgettable dining experience. Traditionally, these stars have been awarded for culinary mastery alone, rewarding chefs and restaurants that push the boundaries of flavour and technique. However, in today’s evolving world, the conversation has shifted. As sustainability becomes increasingly important, the Michelin Guide has recognised the need for change. Enter the Michelin Green Star.
Launched in 2020, the Michelin Green Star is a relatively new accolade, created to highlight restaurants making a meaningful difference in the field of sustainable gastronomy. It recognises those establishments that go beyond the kitchen, showing an extraordinary commitment to eco-friendly practices, reducing carbon footprints, and respecting the natural world. While traditional Michelin stars focus on culinary artistry, the Green Star adds another dimension: how these restaurants impact the planet.
Restaurants vying for the Green Star must implement a wide range of sustainable initiatives. These include sourcing ingredients locally and seasonally, reducing waste, conserving energy, and using organic, ethically produced ingredients. They are also expected to educate their staff and customers on the importance of sustainability, creating a ripple effect that spreads beyond their walls.
The Green Star isn’t simply about serving good food. It’s about serving food that’s good for the planet. It celebrates those who are crafting a future where dining is in harmony with nature.
Two stand out examples of Green Star-awarded restaurants in the UK are Whatley Manor and Apricity, each leading the way with their sustainable practices.
Whatley Manor, located in the heart of the Cotswolds, offers more than just a refined dining experience. Its sustainable ethos

permeates every aspect of the establishment. The chefs work closely with local farmers and suppliers to ensure that ingredients are sourced from nearby, significantly reducing food miles. The restaurant has also embraced a comprehensive food waste strategy, turning what could be waste into compost to enrich their gardens. Their journey to a Green Star isn’t just about serving local, fresh ingredients—it’s about giving back to the environment at every turn.
Over in London, Apricity shines just as brightly. At the core of their approach is the philosophy of “conscious cooking,” which prioritises zero-waste initiatives and ethical sourcing. Apricity’s team takes pride in using foraged, seasonal ingredients while cultivating strong relationships with sustainable farmers. Beyond the food, the restaurant embraces energy-efficient practices and eco-friendly design elements, further reducing its environmental impact. By focusing on educating both diners and staff, Apricity is ensuring that sustainability is a shared goal and a lived experience.
Both Whatley Manor and Apricity are setting the standard for what it means to marry fine dining with environmental consciousness, inspiring other restaurants to follow their lead.
The Michelin Green Star has sparked a revolution in the culinary world, redefining the standards by which restaurants are evaluated. More than ever, diners are considering the environmental impact of their meal choices. Restaurants that embrace sustainability not only cater to this growing demand but also contribute to a more
responsible and mindful future. The Green Star has established a new benchmark—one where exquisite cuisine and eco-friendly practices must work hand in hand.
As this movement grows, the Green Star is shaping the way we think about food. It is encouraging restaurants to rethink their processes, pushing them to find innovative ways to minimise their impact on the environment while still creating world-class meals.
The Michelin Guide’s commitment to sustainability doesn’t stop at restaurants. The Michelin Key is an accolade reserved for the most exceptional hotels that demonstrate unparalleled excellence and a dedication to sustainable hospitality. This prestigious honour highlights hotels that offer luxury while ensuring that environmental consciousness is embedded in every guest experience.
Edgewood Tahoe Resort, nestled in the Sierra Mountains on the shores of Lake Tahoe is a luxury resort that has recently earned its place among Michelin Key hotels. Recognised for its commitment to sustainability, Edgewood Tahoe offers a world-class experience, with its spa, gourmet dining, and seasonal activities designed to blend luxury with ecological mindfulness. The resort has embraced sustainable practices, from energy-efficient operations to offering eco-friendly guest experiences, making it a haven for the conscious traveler.
Whether you’re lounging by the lakeside pool or enjoying a wine dinner experience, Edgewood Tahoe combines the natural beauty of its surroundings with a thoughtful approach to sustainability, solidifying its reputation as a leader in eco-luxury.
The Michelin Green Star and Michelin Key represent more than just awards—they are a call to action. They challenge the culinary and hospitality industries to prioritise sustainability, inspiring both restaurants and hotels to tread lightly on the earth while delivering extraordinary experiences.
As a traveler, seeking out Michelin Green Star restaurants and Michelin Key hotels is a meaningful way to support businesses that are shaping a greener future. Whether you’re dining at an eco-conscious restaurant like Whatley Manor or Apricity, or staying at a luxury, sustainable resort like Edgewood Tahoe, you can enjoy your experience knowing you’re making choices that reflect care for the planet.
By choosing to explore these sustainably minded destinations, you’re not only treating yourself to memorable meals and stays, but also contributing to a movement that seeks to preserve and protect our planet for future generations.

WORDS: RACHEL BRANSON
At each stage of our lives, there are milestones, and with every milestone, clarity begins to unfold. As women, we often move through life ticking the boxes—building careers, nurturing families, and meeting societal expectations—but beneath the surface, many of us quietly wonder, who am I really? What if the life we’ve curated so carefully doesn’t fully represent who we are or who we want to become?
This very question—“Who am I?”—is one that many women are asking as they navigate new chapters in their lives, fuelled by self-discovery, reinvention, and bold choices. Over the past few months, I’ve met some extraordinary women, each with their own story of transformation, and one in particular—author Preethi Nair—stands out as someone who has consistently redefined herself, unapologetically stepping outside her comfort zone to embrace new possibilities. As Nair prepares to release her fourth novel, Unravelling, I had the pleasure of sitting down with her to explore the personal journey that inspired her latest work. Her personal story is one of resilience, creativity, and the audacity to ask the “what if” questions that so many of us shy away from.
Born into an immigrant family with rigid ideas about career and success, Nair’s path was anything but traditional. She began her career as a management consultant, navigating the corporate world while secretly harbouring a desire to write. Like many women, she felt the weight of family expectations, the belief that success was defined by stability and conventional achievement. “Writing was never in the list of things I was supposed to do,” she recalls. So, she lived a double life—pursuing her passion in secret while maintaining a corporate facade.
Her first novel was met with rejection by every publisher, and as fate would have it, she was also made redundant from her job. Unable to admit this failure to her family, she pretended to go to work each day while secretly plotting a bold new chapter. Armed with an unshakeable belief in her dream, Nair made the decision to self-publish her first book and promote it herself—going so far as to create an alter ego, a fictional publicist who helped her break into the literary world. Eventually, her determination paid off, leading to a three-book deal with HarperCollins.
Yet even after achieving this dream, Nair found herself back in familiar territory—feeling safe, successful, but disconnected from her true self. “I had a great career, I got married, we bought a house—all in the same year. But I felt like I’d left my wild side behind,” she explains. She was thriving by external standards, but something inside her was missing: that willingness to take risks, to dive into the unknown.
Nair’s next breakthrough came through a series of conversations with women in their 50s—women who, by all appearances, had “perfect” lives. They had curated everything to appear successful: families, careers, homes. But as Nair delved deeper, she realised that if you pulled at the thread of these perfect lives, their stories began to unravel. Inspired by these encounters, Nair wrote a one-woman play about women in their 50s confronting their deepest desires and untold regrets. But in a world that often devalues women as they age, she was met with resistance. There was no appetite for a play about a middle-aged woman, she was told.
So, in true Nair fashion, she decided to produce the show herself. Having never acted before, she booked a West End theatre 18

months in advance and trained intensely to prepare. “I didn’t have a goal beyond stepping outside my comfort zone and overcoming my own self-limiting beliefs,” she recalls. It was terrifying, exhilarating, and ultimately life-changing, and proving once again that if you push beyond your limits, anything is possible.
What’s striking about Nair’s journey is how deeply it resonates with the broader experience of so many women. At some point, we all reach a crossroads, where safety and stability collide with a desire to reclaim the wild, creative spirit that fuels our joy. For Nair, creativity is her way of staying alive, of reconnecting with that essential part of herself. For others, it might be something entirely different—whether that’s traveling, starting a business, or simply trying something new. But the message is the same: “We must all find our thing that makes us feel alive.”
It’s easy to stay in the comfort zone, especially as we get older. We have responsibilities, families, and the pressure to maintain the lives we’ve built. But Nair’s story challenges us to ask: What are we sacrificing in exchange for that comfort? What might happen if we took a chance on ourselves again?
Nair’s latest novel, Unravelling, builds on these very themes. The protagonist, Bhanu, appears to have it all: a loving family, a beautiful home, and a life that is, on the surface, perfect. But on the eve of her 40th wedding anniversary, her first love re-enters her life, offering her the chance to leave everything behind and start over.
It’s a powerful exploration of identity, the choices we make, and the haunting question of “what if?”—a question that lingers at the edge of every life, no matter how curated or seemingly perfect it may be. “I wanted to explore the gap between what we present to the world and what’s really going on inside,” Nair says. “Bhanu’s story is universal—it’s about love, regret, and the search for happiness. I wanted to give a voice to an older woman and show that it’s never too late to begin again.”
Nair turned down a book deal from HarperCollins to maintain creative control over Unravelling, choosing once again to self-publish. It was a bold decision, one rooted in the same independence and fearlessness that have defined her career from the start.
As we conclude our conversation, I find myself deeply inspired by Nair’s story—a reminder that, whatever our age, we have the power to redefine our lives, to take risks, and to rediscover who we truly are. Nair’s journey isn’t just about writing or career success; it’s about embracing life’s uncertainties and finding joy in the unknown. As women, we are constantly evolving, and with each milestone comes new clarity. Nair encourages us to be brave enough to ask the hard questions, to pull at the threads of our own carefully curated lives, and to dare to imagine something different. Because the truth is, it’s never too late to unravel the life you have and weave something new.

WORDS: DR. SHUMAILA HEMANI
Leaving Harvard’s rigorous environment, I found myself grappling with more than just academic challenges. Chronic pain and burnout became my constant companions. For over a decade, since departing Harvard’s Ph.D. program in Music (2010-11), I have wrestled with post-traumatic stress, worsened by undiagnosed burnout that exacerbated my chronic back pain and digestive issues, which began in 2009.
My daily life became a struggle with muscle spasms, knee pain, and even problems with walking. Meeting an exceptional chiropractor in Edmonton in 2015 was a turning point. I was advised to stop playing my beloved musical instrument, the harmonium, a recommendation that felt like losing a part of myself. The harmonium, a source of deep learning and connection with my Ustad, had inadvertently contributed to my shoulder blade issues. Despite the emotional toll, I had to reframe my relationship with music and find new ways to continue my learning and practice.
By 2017, my walking issues led to advice against sitting on the floor—a traditional posture for performing music. This forced me to adapt my performance methods to accommodate my physical limitations, significantly impacting my confidence and delaying the release of my debut album: Mannat which was supported by the Cultural Diversity Award (2015). I even performed while sitting on the floor in various settings, including recording my album at Edmontone Studios (2018-2019)
and Canadian Music Week (2021) but it had significant post-performance consequences.
The realization that I couldn’t push through as I had in the past was slow and painful. My education at the University of Alberta, which opened many doors, now faced new constraints imposed by my body. Like Christine Miserandino’s Spoon Theory, which uses spoons to symbolize the finite energy of those with chronic illness, I needed a new framework to manage my chronic pain and burnout. This led me to a place of acceptance, discovering new pathways for living with my body and confronting the unpredictability of my health.
On days when I ignored my body’s signals, migraines would often result, forcing me to adapt my plans. Yet, amid these challenges, I found solace in creative expression. Songs like ‘Anticipating’ and ‘Baydaari,’ which featured in my Cross-Canada tour for suicide prevention awareness (2020), and performances for Alberta Musical Theatre (2020) and International Women’s Day (2021), became crucial to my recovery from burnout.
These creative outlets helped me reclaim aspects of myself that had been sidelined. Inspired by this journey, I developed the Color Your Energy approach—a method that complements the Spoon Theory and provides a creative way to manage fluctuating energy levels, particularly beneficial for those with chronic health challenges, anxiety, and burnout.
It was only through acceptance that I discovered new pathways for living with my body and new avenues for success that involved confronting the uncertainty of life, unpredictability of my body, and
undependability of the slowly dissipating world of support. I experienced suicidal thoughts that have intensified since 2015, but enduring these dark periods also taught me that the art of living lies in nurturing trust in life and learning to move forward with faith.
At times, I had no choice but to allow myself space for creative expression. Amid chronic pain, migraines, and burnout, I wrote songs like Anticipating, Baydaari, and Primordial Covenant which were later featured in the Cross-Canada tour for suicide prevention awareness and hope (2020) and in my performances for the Alberta Musical Theatre (2020), International Women’s Day in Alberta (2021), and Map the Systems Canada Finals (2024).
These creative meanderings not only led me to reclaim aspects of myself that I had sidelined to meet the expectations of those who saw me merely as an academic rather than a creative, but they also helped me recover from deep burnout caused by chronic stress and pain as a result of systemic pressures to outperform myself. This journey inspired me to develop Color Your Energy—an approach, that complements the famous Spoon Theory and offers a creative method for managing your day, particularly on foggy days when you can not even visualize what your energy might be like an hour from now. This method is especially beneficial for those dealing with chronic health challenges, anxiety, and burnout, where counting spoons of energy for the day is no longer feasible.

INTERVIEW WITH LISA AZARMI
Lisa Azarmi’s work has touched countless lives through her renowned blog, Ravenous Butterflies, a thriving art and literature platform with over 1.25 million followers across social media. By sharing her passion for creativity, Lisa has created a space where inspiration, healing, and connection flourish. Her latest venture, an uplifting book titled Calm Your Mind, has recently been published by Batsford. In it, Lisa offers readers 18 thoughtfully curated journeys aimed at helping them find moments of peace and serenity amidst the busyness of everyday life. But Lisa’s path to success has been anything but easy. She has faced an incredible array of life challenges, from life-threatening health issues and the loss of loved ones to divorce and severe financial pressures. Yet, Lisa has never given up. Instead, she has leaned on her lifelong love of art and literature—disciplines she studied at Goldsmiths, University of London—to guide her through difficult times. These creative outlets have given her not only solace but a profound sense of resilience.
In our interview, Lisa opens up about her personal journey, her commitment to wellness, and how she’s managed to inspire millions through the beauty of art.
Lisa’s relationship with the arts runs deep. “Whenever the world became too cruel for me,” she recalls, “I’d take myself off to a gallery or curl up and read or write.” Painting, in particular, is her “happy place,” a sanctuary where she could lose herself and find calm amidst life’s turbulence. It’s a passion she passed on to her three children, now adults, who grew up surrounded by art, music, and creativity. “When they were young, we’d sit around the kitchen table, and I’d draw whatever they wanted, which usually meant princesses, fairies, and mermaids,” she laughs.
This love for the arts eventually evolved into Ravenous Butterflies, a blog Lisa started in 2013 as a personal outlet. What began as a small endeavour, curated entirely from an iPad, soon blossomed into a global phenomenon. Despite the challenges of managing a growing community, especially during her divorce in 2020, Lisa remained dedicated. Her posts remained true to her artistic sensibilities, touching on everything from classic literature to fine art, and resonated deeply with her followers.
“Art has always been my sanctuary, my healing,” she explains. “Ravenous Butterflies grew into something much larger than I could have imagined, especially during lockdown. It became a space for collective healing, where people could come to find beauty and inspiration.”
Lisa’s entrepreneurial journey has been intertwined with her own health challenges. Diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in 2014, she had to prioritise her emotional and physical wellbeing to manage the condition. “My health forces me to slow down,” she admits. “I’ve learned that managing stress is key, so I try to eat healthily, avoid alcohol during the week, and get plenty of rest. Recently, I’ve also started walking more, especially now that I’ve got a puppy to keep me company!”
Her commitment to wellness doesn’t stop there. During her personal transformation, Lisa also became a qualified Reiki Master, which added a new dimension of healing to her life. “Ravenous Butterflies has been about much more than physical change; it’s been about embracing who I am and connecting with others through art,” she shares.
Lisa’s upcoming book, Calm Your Mind, is a natural extension of the work she’s been doing through Ravenous Butterflies. The book offers readers a curated journey through art and mindfulness, providing calming strategies to help them cope with life’s emotional

challenges. “The idea behind the book is simple,” Lisa says. “I wanted to create something that would help people find moments of serenity, just as art has helped me find peace throughout my life.”
Her first book, An Apothecary of Art: To Soothe Your Soul, was a bestseller in both the UK and US and has been translated into Korean, with a Mandarin edition soon to be released. Like Calm Your Mind, it draws on her deep appreciation for art as a tool for healing and reflection.
Running a business as successful as Ravenous Butterflies comes with its own set of challenges. With over 20 million people engaging with her content monthly, Lisa has had to find ways to balance her work life with personal wellness. “It’s hard work,” she admits. “I try to be strict about taking weekends off, but it’s not always possible. I can’t remember the last time I switched off completely.”
But for Lisa, the key to staying grounded is staying true to herself. “I’ve learned to practice what I preach,” she says. “I built my community by being positive and caring deeply for my followers, but I’m also honest when things aren’t going well. It’s important for people to know that it’s okay not to be okay all the time.”
When asked about the legacy she hopes to leave behind, Lisa’s answer is clear. “I want people to find peace, healing, and joy through my work,” she says. “Whether it’s through my social media platforms or my books, I hope to inspire others to embrace their creativity and find beauty in their lives. My dream is for future generations to discover the transformative power of art and literature, and to live their lives without fear or judgment.”
With Calm Your Mind and a passionate community that continues to grow, Lisa Azarmi’s journey is far from over. Through her resilience, creativity, and commitment to wellness, she has not only transformed her own life but touched the hearts and minds of millions around the world.
As Lisa says, “By sharing my love for the arts, I believe we can build a more joyful and kinder world together.” Indeed, her work is a testament to the power of beauty, healing, and the boundless potential of the human spirit.
Calm Your Mind by Lisa Azarmi is published by Batsford and will be available in hardback for £16.99 from October 24, 2024.

Health and wellness have become a multi-billion-dollar industry, so it’s often difficult to find simple, accessible, and truly transformative solutions. Yet, sometimes, a new approach emerges that challenges everything we think we know about wellbeing. One such revelation is the work of Garry Lineham and his team at Human Garage. Their groundbreaking practice, “Fascial Maneuvers,” has taken the wellness community by storm—encouraging people worldwide to unlock their body’s natural ability to heal.
Intrigued by the astonishing success stories shared on Human Garage’s social media channels, I decided to explore their methods firsthand. The videos showed people making simple movements that led to dramatic improvements in health—from alleviating chronic pain to emotional releases and even reversing diseases. Like many, I approached this with scepticism, but as I dug deeper, I realised that there was something profoundly different about what Garry and his team were doing. To learn more, I reached out to Garry for an interview, but first, I decided to experience it for myself.
A Personal Introduction to Fascial Maneuvers
Before speaking with Garry, I downloaded the Human Garage app and began their free 28-day reset program. Yes, free. Unlike many wellness companies offering high-priced solutions, Human Garage provides its core content without charge. Their philosophy is simple yet radical: “To inspire you to heal yourself and take back control of your health.” I began the daily practice of fascial Maneuvers—simple stretches and movements that target the fascia, the connective tissue that encases muscles, nerves, and organs.
By the eighth day, I already felt a transformation in my body. I was moving more freely, my shoulder tension had eased, and I even noticed an emotional change. My interest in this modality had been piqued, and I couldn’t wait to hear more about Garry’s journey, his thoughts on the current state of the healthcare system, and why he believes fascial Maneuvers are the key to true health and vitality. Garry Lineham: From Chronic Pain to a Global Wellness Movement
Garry’s story begins with a long personal struggle. After spending millions on various treatments over 20 years, he found himself stuck in a cycle of dependency on therapy to function. “I couldn’t maintain doing therapy and also maintain my professional career. I had to figure out a way to fix my body,” Garry told me. This realisation marked the beginning of his journey into fascial Maneuvers.
Initially, Human Garage was a physical clinic where they treated elite athletes and celebrities with their revolutionary techniques. But, as Garry explained, the results were still not long-lasting enough for him. “I went on my first vacation in a decade, and I realised that all the work I’d done wasn’t solving my issues—it was just a Band-Aid,” he said. This was the turning point. Garry became determined to find self-healing techniques that didn’t require constant external intervention.
It was during the pandemic that the concept of fascial Maneuvers truly began to take shape. With his partners, Jason and Cynthia, Garry began developing simple movements that people could do themselves to alleviate pain and improve health. What started as a necessity during lockdown soon turned into a global movement. “Within three months of doing these Maneuvers, we knew this had to be free,” Garry recalled. And thus, the Human Garage model was born—offering all their learning tools at no cost to the public, funded instead by supplements and in-person events.
The Science of Fascia: Uncovering the Body’s Hidden Healing Mechanism
To understand the power of fascial Maneuvers, it’s important to explore the science behind fascia. Fascia is a three-dimensional web of connective tissue that runs throughout the body. For years, it was largely overlooked in medicine, but more recently, research has shown that fascia plays a critical role in overall health, including movement, flexibility, and even emotional wellbeing.
One study published in Frontiers in Psychology suggests that fascial tissue not only supports the structural integrity of the body but is also highly innervated and involved in sensory processing. Tension in the fascia can restrict movement and contribute to chronic pain, while releasing this tension through targeted movements can restore physical and emotional balance .
One 2015 study published in The Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies highlighted the effectiveness of myofascial release in treating pain and improving quality of life in individuals with fibromyalgia. Another 2020 study in BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders suggested that fascial therapy improved functional outcomes and reduced pain in patients with chronic neck pain.
Garry’s approach to healing through fascial Maneuvers is based on this very principle: that freeing the fascia can unlock the body’s inherent ability to heal. What makes his method stand out is its
accessibility—no gym memberships, expensive equipment, or specialist treatments are needed. The Maneuvers are simple enough to do at home, yet effective enough to make a profound difference.
Garry’s ideas challenge many of the norms we’ve come to accept in the wellness industry. He questions the need for intense musclebuilding workouts, citing the fact that many bodybuilders from the 70s and 80s are now facing serious health issues, including dysfunction, illness, or even early death. “We have a world that believes building muscles is good, but my research shows that it’s actually keeping us sick because muscles require constant maintenance,” he explained. Instead, he advocates for movements that focus on overall body alignment and hydration rather than muscle hypertrophy. His critiques don’t stop there. He points out that modern gym culture and even practices like yoga and stretching may not be as beneficial as we think. For instance, stretching has become a staple in professional sports, yet injury rates have skyrocketed. According to Garry, this is a clear indication that something isn’t working. “We have this belief system that we’re getting better, but in reality, we are sicker than ever. We have more diseases, more people on the spectrum, and skyrocketing autoimmune conditions,” he said.
One of the most fascinating aspects of Garry’s philosophy is his emphasis on simplicity. He has radically minimised his life—owning only what fits in a single suitcase, including a NanoVi® water device, his essential oils, a few crystals and some clothes. He believes material excess weighs heavily on both body and mind.
“The more things we own, the more stress we accumulate,” he says. “I’ve found that by reducing my possessions, I’ve created more space for peace and wellbeing.”
Reframing Health: Hydration, Movement, and Emotional Healing
What Garry proposes is deceptively simple: restore the body’s hydration, move naturally, and release emotional stress. These elements form the foundation of Human Garage’s philosophy. He emphasises the importance of not just drinking water, but also ensuring the body has the proper minerals to absorb and retain that hydration. “Today, the average human body is 60% water, compared to 80% 75 years ago. This dehydration is happening at the same rate as the increase in disease,” he shared. This insight aligns with recent research in hydration science, which links proper hydration to improved cell function and longevity .
However, hydration alone isn’t enough. Movement is equally critical, but not just any kind of movement. Garry argues that much of the modern exercise paradigm is misguided. Instead of repetitive, isolated exercises like those found in the gym, he advocates for functional movements—those that mirror natural activities like climbing, lifting, and stretching. This approach helps the fascia move fluidly, allowing the body to function more efficiently and heal itself.
A crucial aspect of fascial health, according to Garry, is emotional release. The body stores trauma and unresolved emotions within the fascia, which can manifest as physical pain or illness. By performing fascial Maneuvers, the body becomes safe enough to release these stored emotions. “Over the last few years, I’ve uncovered traumas I didn’t even know I had. Releasing them has been one of the most liberating experiences,” Garry explained. This idea resonates with the growing body of research on somatic therapy, which shows that the body and mind are intricately connected, and physical release can lead to emotional healing.
One of the most striking ideas Garry shared was his perspective on ageing. He questions widely accepted beliefs about menopause, weight gain, and other aspects of ageing. “Where did menopause come in? It’s not age-related—it’s stress-related. If we move and hydrate the body properly, many symptoms we associate with ageing disappear,” he said.
Garry’s observations are backed by a large community of followers who have experienced similar transformations. Thousands of people have reported reversing diseases, healing chronic conditions, and improving their overall wellbeing through fascial Maneuvers. The stories are particularly remarkable in cases of women reversing menopause, restoring fertility, and parents reporting dramatic improvements in children with conditions like autism.
My experience with fascial Maneuvers over the past few weeks has been nothing short of transformative. What began as a sceptical experiment has turned into an essential part of my daily routine. Struggling with stubborn weight around my midsection, I was surprised to see significant changes in just a few days. The simple act of moving my body in ways it was designed to move—combined with hydration and emotional release—has made a profound difference in my physical and emotional wellbeing.
Garry’s message is one of empowerment. He wants everyone to understand that the body has the ability to heal itself, and all we need to do is give it the right tools. “Every disease in the body is caused by emotional dysregulation, dehydration, and lack of movement,” he said. This holistic approach to health is not only refreshing but also accessible to anyone willing to invest a few minutes each day in their wellbeing.
With a rapidly growing global following, Garry’s vision is to reach a billion people. Their online content is designed to be accessible, informative, and inspiring, all while being free. The team is also expanding into new media, with plans to launch longer documentary style content on Apple TV, YouTube, and streaming platforms. This, combined with a documentary in the works, aims to tell the full story behind Human Garage’s mission and their profound impact on the world.
What makes Human Garage so inspiring is its accessibility. You don’t need fancy equipment, a gym membership, or expensive treatments to heal. By dedicating just 20 minutes a day to fascial Maneuvers, anyone can begin to unlock their body’s potential for self-healing. As Garry simply puts it, “The body was meant to function without restriction.”
If you’re ready to explore this revolutionary approach to wellness, I encourage you to start with Human Garage’s free 28-day reset program. Mary Lou Falcone, a trailblazing author and advocate for Lewy body dementia (LBD) awareness, shares her experience after her husband, the acclaimed artist Nicky Zann, was diagnosed with LBD in 2019. Her profound journey through love, loss, and caregiving led to her writing the poignant memoir ‘I Didn’t See It Coming: Scenes of Love, Loss, and Lewy Body Dementia’. Join us as she opens up about the complexities of this often misunderstood disease, her personal crusade for LBD awareness, and her mission to support others walking a similar path.
What is Lewy body dementia (LBD) and what are the symptoms?
While symptoms vary making LBD a very hard disease to accurately diagnosis, early symptoms include:
• hallucinations and/or delusions,
• cognitive fluctuations
• changes in movement
• behavioral shifts
• REM sleep disorder.
WORDS: MARY LOU FALCONE
What made you a crusader for LBD awareness?
When my beloved husband, artist Nicky Zann, was diagnosed with LBD in 2019, it was very difficult for me to get my questions answered, much less to find help. The neurologist, while brilliant at diagnosis, was of zero help when it came to answering my questions. Through our friend, the actor David Hyde Pierce, I found CaringKind, a wonderful organization with a myriad of helpful free services for caregivers dealing primarily with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia, who in turn introduced me to Norma Loeb, Founder and Executive Director of the Lewy Body Dementia Resource Center. Norma and the support groups of the LBDRC became my lifeline. I vowed that at the end of my LBD journey with Nicky, I would give back and help other caregivers know that they are not alone. This I have done by writing a book, I DIDN’T SEE IT COMING: Scenes of Love, Loss, and Lewy Body Dementia, and becoming an executive producer on a documentary film about LBD, FACING the WIND, following real people in real time who are affected by the disease.
How is it that LBD, while the second most progressive form of dementia after Alzheimer’s, is so little known by the general population?
Awareness, awareness, awareness…we clearly need to keep working on this. The most famous name connected with LBD is Robin Williams, and yet even he didn’t know what he had. He was misdiagnosed. It was in autopsy that they found his brain riddled with rouge proteins, alpha synucleins, known as Lewy bodies.
It’s also fair to say that when you have seen one case of LBD, you have seen ONE case of LBD, meaning that it’s not a one size fits all disease making it very hard to accurately diagnose.
With all that said, we need to constantly work to bring awareness to this form of dementia. The numbers are large: over 1.4 million people in the US and 11 million people worldwide have this disease…and these numbers are old and under reported! Once again, it’s awareness that will bring LBD to the forefront so that the dollars for research can grow until there is a cure!
Can you have more than one type of dementia at the same time?
Yes, unfortunately you can. It’s called co-morbidity. Currently published stats from autopsy reports state that in 40% of Alzheimer’s brains autopsied, LBD was found along with Alzheimer’s disease. A few top researchers in the medical field claim that the number far exceeds that percentage and could be as high as 60 – 80%.
It’s my opinion that the burden for caregivers dealing with LBD is made more difficult because of the fluctuations, along with the presence of Parkinsonism in approximately 80% of those diagnosed with LBD. In our case, my husband Nicky was diagnosed right out of the gate with Lewy body dementia with Parkinsonian aspects. The neurologist determined this via a general cognitive test, watching Nicky walk (definitely a right leg drag), and then following up with a DaTscan and a REM sleep test. All of this supported the diagnosis.
The most heartbreaking and alternately falsely hopeful factor is that you see your loved one perfectly himself one minute, and then the next minute, or hour or day, he is whisked away, not even recognizing who you are. Then, he reappears, totally intact. These are the cognitive fluctuations to which I referred earlier. I call it the roller coaster ride and it’s heartbreaking.
To all of this, you add not only the cognitive decline with fluctuations, but the physical decline as well. In our case it included elements like no strength in his hands, making it impossible to open things or cut meat or button a shirt; to eventually not being able to walk, with incontinence issues thrown in for good measure. And this is just a snapshot.
With calm, grace, dignity…much easier said than done, and truth be known, sometimes impossible!
It’s my belief that kindness and maintaining dignity are paramount. People with dementia in general need to know that they are loved, protected, and safe!...with the greatest of these being love. It takes a monument of patience, which is very hard to maintain day in and day out. I guarantee that you, as the caregiver, are going to lose it from time to time, no matter how loving and patient you are. When that happens, take yourself into a quiet place where you have a pillow ready, and SCREAM the f… word into it. It works wonders to release the tension. Then take a lavender sachet or bar of lavender soap and inhale. It really works to calm. You are then ready to face the next challenge. But please make sure your loved one cannot hear you. While people with dementia cannot always express themselves, they feel deeply and pick up on your energy, anger, tension or sadness…so it’s important to release your own toxins so that you don’t share them with your loved one.
No one likes to be told what to do 24/7, and people with LBD are no exception. And so, I recommend that you allow a person with LBD to have his way as long as it’s not dangerous. Try not to always correct or argue…what does it matter if the table cloth is
purple and the person with LBD says it’s red! This can be annoying and sometimes inconvenient for you, the caregiver, but try to put yourself in his shoes for just one minute…I think you get my point.
How can family and friends support a caregiver? Do you have any top tips?
Early on, it’s important to have the discussion with your loved one about letting people know what’s going on. NO ONE would ever ask for this, so there is no shame in having the disease. Nicky and I, together, determined that we would let our friends and family know. When I knew we were going to see friends (and please, be sure it is in very small groups – no more than two other people at a time if possible), I would call in advance to tell them about what was happening, what to expect, and then give a brief tutorial in how best to handle the situations which might arise. Our friends and family were grateful to have the information and the road map to follow. And be sure that the gatherings do not go on too long.
Also, the caregiver needs moments of respite. Don’t be afraid to ask a friend or family member if they might come over for an hour or two, perhaps take the person with LBD to lunch or for a walk or just stay for a chat. Most people will be happy to help, but every once in a while, there will be someone who stays away. When that happens, it can be difficult to accept, and I had to learn it’s because that person cannot cope.
There is one last note that I want to add to all caregivers: YOU ARE NOT ALONE! It can often feel very lonely and isolated, but there are people ready and happy to help, and there are support groups that are invaluable. Don’t be afraid to ask for help…everyone needs it!

Toni Trucks, the dynamic actress best known for her role as Lisa Davis in the hit CBS/Paramount+ series SEAL Team, has made a lasting impact both on-screen and off. Starring as the only female lead in the show, Trucks holds her own alongside co-stars like David Boreanaz, bringing grit, intelligence, and depth to a male-dominated setting. But beyond her captivating performances, Toni is using her platform to raise awareness about a deeply personal issue—hearing loss. As a passionate advocate for early detection, she hopes to destigmatize hearing aids and promote the importance of hearing health, which has been linked to cognitive well-being.
In this interview, Toni opens up about her journey with hearing loss, her mission to empower others, and how her portrayal of Lisa Davis has influenced her both personally and professionally.
Toni’s path to understanding her hearing loss began early, though it was ignored for much of her life. “My hearing loss was largely ignored for most of my life,” Toni admits. “Even when acknowledged, treatment was discouraged. I followed suit and disregarded it from the age of five onward.” Despite the early signs, her hearing difficulties didn’t seem to disrupt her daily life until she began studying music in university.
It wasn’t until a year ago, when helping her father with his own hearing challenges, that a specialist noticed Toni subtly reading lips—a behavior she hadn’t realized she was doing. This prompted another hearing test, but this time, the diagnosis was different. She was fitted with prescription hearing aids, a moment she describes as “incredibly moving.” “The world was a lot louder and busier than I thought,” she recalls. This experience has had a profound impact on her health perspective, making her an outspoken advocate for hearing health.
Awareness is at the core of Toni’s message. “Understanding that hearing loss is a normal part of life is a good first step,” she says. Yet hearing health often takes a backseat compared to regular eye and dental checkups. Toni hopes to change this mindset, particularly as untreated hearing loss has been linked to dementia and other cognitive issues. “Most people experience some level of loss by age 40, sometimes earlier,” she explains. She advises people of all ages to get regular hearing screenings and to protect their ears from daily noise exposure, whether it’s at concerts or from something as simple as using a hairdryer.
October is Audiology Awareness Month, and Toni is leveraging her voice to break down the stigma surrounding hearing aids and encourage people to prioritize their auditory health. “For me, learning that hearing health is firmly attached to brain health was truly life-altering,” she shares. Studies have shown that untreated mild hearing loss can double the risk of dementia, while severe untreated hearing loss can increase it fivefold. “Hearing health equals brain health,” Toni asserts. She hopes to help shift public perception so that hearing tests become as routine as eye exams, especially for younger generations.
Hearing loss can often go unnoticed, as was the case with Toni. “You don’t even know what you’re missing until you are shown,” she notes. She encourages people to be mindful of subtle signs, such as needing the TV volume turned up or frequently asking people to repeat themselves. Even if you aren’t experiencing noticeable symptoms, Toni advocates for everyone to get tested as a preventive measure.

As Lisa Davis in SEAL Team, Toni Trucks portrays a strong, intelligent woman thriving in a male-dominated environment. This role has left a lasting impression on her, giving her a new level of respect for reallife women who work in similar spaces. “Lisa Davis was written to have grit, guts, and wit. She was relentless in her pursuit of success,” Toni explains. The role has influenced her personal life as well, inspiring her to carry some of Lisa’s fearlessness into her own endeavors.
Reflecting on SEAL Team, which recently wrapped up after seven seasons, Toni appreciates the journey her character has taken, rising through the ranks from a petty officer to a lieutenant. “I can only hope this character has added a positive note to the greater conversation about women in leadership positions, especially in maledominated fields.”
As a woman of color leading in a popular action series, Toni feels a deep responsibility in her role. “I am the proudest when I reach someone that feels personally represented by ‘Lisa,’” she shares. For her, meeting women, particularly women of color, who see themselves reflected in her character is one of the most rewarding aspects of her work.
Toni is particularly passionate about raising awareness of the connection between untreated hearing loss and cognitive health. “Hearing
loss is considered the #1 most modifiable risk factor for preventing dementia,” she notes. By sharing this information, she hopes to inspire others to take action to protect both their hearing and their brain health. “We don’t hear with our ears; we hear with our brains,” she emphasizes.
As she steps away from SEAL Team, Toni Trucks is excited about the next chapter in her career. While she hasn’t yet settled on her next project, she is intrigued by the possibility of working in the sci-fi genre. “Something that pokes at the imagination a bit,” she says with a smile.
For Toni, health and wellness extend beyond the physical. With the demands of a high-profile career, she places great importance on mental and emotional wellbeing. “I have taken great steps to ensure my personal life looks and feels quite different than my professional life,” she reveals. Time alone is essential for her to recharge, whether it’s through a peaceful walk or journaling. One of her favorite selfcare rituals? “Sitting in a rocking chair. The rocking chair doesn’t get nearly enough credit for all its healing properties.”
In the end, Toni Trucks is not only a force on screen but a powerful advocate for health, wellbeing, and representation. Through her personal journey with hearing loss and her impactful portrayal of women in leadership, she continues to inspire and uplift others, both in Hollywood and beyond.

Carrie Scharf, a skincare maker, self-care advocate, and a passionate writer shares her thoughts on taking a bath for self-care.
When was the last time you soaked in a warm tub using aromatic ingredients, tea, and music or a good book? Do you take out time to unwind, de-stress and pamper yourself? I cherish my (mostly) kid-free quiet bath time and try to make the most of it.
The goal of a self-care bath is to take care of your body and mind and enjoy some calm and/or rejuvenation and relaxation. Have a tummy ache? Take a bath. Stuffy nose? Take a bath. Feeling anxious, grumpy or tired? Take a bath. I think this quote from Sylvia Plath says it all.
“There must be quite a few things a hot bath won’t cure, but I don’t know many of them. Whenever I’m sad I’m going to die, or so nervous I can’t sleep, or in love with somebody I won’t be seeing for a week, I slump down just so far and then I say: ‘I’ll go take a hot bath.’ I meditate in the bath. The water needs to be very hot, so hot you can barely stand putting your foot in it. Then you lower yourself, inch by inch, till the water’s up to your neck. I never feel so much myself as when I’m in a hot bath.”
Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar
Why should I take a bath?
I know that a lot of people are devoted shower people. But there are many reasons you should give a nice warm bath a try. A bath can be the most glorious form of self-care when you put some thought and energy into it. According to the Cleveland Clinic, taking a bath has many benefits both mental and physical.
A warm bath can help relax muscles and relieve tension which contributes to a feeling of relaxation. Bathing engages your senses: the warmth of the water on your skin, the scent of oils or flowers, the sound of the water or your music, the taste of your tea, coffee or wine, and the plants in your bathroom all help to create a soothing atmosphere.

Your bath time can be a quiet time for calm relaxation and self-care. It can be your stress-free break from the demands of the day where you can focus on yourself for a little while.
“Happiness is a hot bath on a Sunday afternoon.” Adrienne Posey
Warm baths create a calm and restful physical environment. Taking a bath helps reduce cortisol, the “stress hormone.” Being immersed in a warm bath is calming which helps you relax and reduce stress levels. It helps improve circulation, calm your nervous system, and releases endorphins which make you feel good.
“I love the magic of a hot bath, how time pauses, and every grievance melts away.”
Richelle E. Goodrich, Smile Anyway: Quotes, Verse, and Grumblings
As someone with dry skin, especially in the winter, I love to take baths. As you soak, your skin softens which makes it easier to get rid of dead skin cells. This will help make your skin silky smooth and help you get a better shave. It also makes it easier to shave while you’re sitting. Warm water helps to open up your pores to get a better clean. This can help in times of stress as stress can stimulate the production of sebum (the skin’s natural oil) which can clog pores and cause acne.
Everyone knows that applying heat to sore muscles helps them relax. So why not apply it to all your muscles at the same time? And it’s even better when you add Epsom salts. Soaking in a warm bath with Epsom salts can help improve blood circulation. Epsom salts, or magnesium sulfate is absorbed through the skin in a bath. They are made of magnesium, sulfur, and oxygen. Magnesium is significant in muscle function and relaxation and a deficiency can mean cramps, twitches, and tremors. Soaking in Epsom salts in a warm bath can help. Epsom salts also have anti-inflammatory properties to help with the swelling and inflammation.
To use Epsom salts for sore muscles, simply add them to a warm bath and soak for at least 15-20 minutes. You can also enhance the relaxation and pain-relieving effects by adding essential oils or other soothing ingredients to your bath.
Cortisol is a contributor to accelerated aging of the skin. Excessive stress can adversely affect the skin. It can affect the production of collagen which helps with the elasticity and firmness of the skin which results in sagging and wrinkles.
Cortisol can cause inflammation which causes skin issues like redness, swelling, and irritation. In the long term, this chronic inflammation can contribute to conditions like acne, eczema and psoriasis. Too much cortisol can also impede wound healing and thus slow down the healing of cuts and bruises. It can also weaken the skin’s barrier function. This makes the skin more susceptible to environmental damage.
SELF-CARE [ SELF–KAIR ] NOUN
THE ACT OF ATTENDING TO ONE’S PHYSICAL OR MENTAL HEALTH, GENERALLY WITHOUT MEDICAL OR OTHER PROFESSIONAL CONSULTATION (OFTEN USED ATTRIBUTIVELY):IT’S BEEN A ROUGH WEEK, SO THIS WEEKEND IS ALL ABOUT SELF-CARE THROUGH EXERCISE.
Stress management is a good way to minimize the effects of cortisol. Some good ways to do this are taking a bath, regular exercise, mindfulness meditation, adequate sleep, and doing things that you enjoy.
Incorporating a bath into your bedtime routine can be a relaxing and effective way to promote better sleep and improve your overall sleep quality. Taking a bath in warm water is relaxing and helps you wash the day away. Do you remember the old commercials that said “Calgon, take me away?”
A warm bath will raise your temperature. When you get out of the bath, your body temperature drops. This drop in temperature can signal to your body that it’s time to sleep, as it mimics the natural drop in body temperature that occurs during the evening.
Reducing the stress hormone cortisol can help you sleep as cortisol can tell the body that it needs to stay alert and awake. Try reducing stress with activities like taking a bath, relaxation techniques, mindfulness practices, and regular exercise. Creating a calming bedtime routine and having a comfy place to sleep can also help.

Picture this: your morning coffee, that sacred elixir which fuels the start of your day, now infused with a substance that looks like tar, tastes like ancient earth, and promises to bring a cascade of health benefits. Intrigued? I certainly was. This new addition to my daily routine is Mountain Blood, a 100% pure Shilajit resin sourced from the breathtaking heights of the Siberian mountains. It’s not just another supplement—it’s a centuries-old remedy straight from the depths of nature itself, rooted in the 5,000-year-old Ayurvedic tradition.
Yes, I tried it. And while it undeniably resembled something scraped from a road, the taste—although strange—was oddly comforting. It felt like consuming a piece of the earth itself, deeply grounding and unique. But beyond its flavour, it stirred a deep sense of curiosity: Could this ancient “black tar” truly be a miracle product for modern wellbeing?

Mountain Blood, also known as Shilajit, is a humic substance formed over centuries by the decomposition of plant matter and microorganisms, pressed between layers of rock deep within the mountains. This resinous material oozes out of rocks at elevations as high as 14,000 feet, like nature’s own medicinal nectar.
Ayurvedic practitioners have long revered Shilajit for its potent healing properties. It is no coincidence that, in this era of rediscovery of ancient wisdom, it’s being touted as the “Rolls Royce” of supplements. Nature Provides, a British brand committed to offering highquality, scientifically validated products, is spearheading this revival. Their Mountain Blood product is 100% pure Shilajit, carefully harvested, tested for purity, and devoid of fillers or synthetic additives.
The Power Within: What Science Says About Shilajit
So, what makes Mountain Blood special, and how does it support your health? According to scientific research, Shilajit is an extraordinary source of fulvic and humic acids, which carry a rich profile of essential minerals, vitamins, and micronutrients. These compounds are crucial for cellular health and vitality, particularly in today’s world where nutrient depletion in our soils is a growing concern. Our bodies recognise and absorb these ionic nutrients far more efficiently than synthetic vitamins, making Shilajit a true “natural multivitamin.”
A plethora of studies have linked Shilajit to an array of health benefits. One study, published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, found that Shilajit can support energy levels and combat fatigue by increasing mitochondrial function, the powerhouse of our cells. Another study in Phytotherapy Research highlighted its potential in managing chronic conditions like Alzheimer’s due to its antioxidant properties.
Furthermore, Shilajit is believed to support testosterone levels and male reproductive health. A study published in Andrologia demonstrated that men who took Shilajit over a 90-day period experienced a significant increase in total testosterone levels. This makes it an exciting option for those looking to naturally support hormonal balance.
For those of us dealing with the constant pressures of modern life, mental health is paramount. Shilajit’s capacity to reduce stress and anxiety is another compelling reason to give it a try. With rising anxiety rates—37.1% of women and 29.9% of men in the UK reporting high levels of anxiety in 2022/23—it’s worth considering supplements like Shilajit to support mental wellbeing. While we must
always consult with healthcare professionals before making new health choices, many of Shilajit’s components have shown promise in reducing stress and supporting overall mental health.
Now, back to that coffee of mine. Adding Mountain Blood to your morning routine is simple. Just a pea-sized amount stirred into your coffee or tea will do the trick. While the taste is undeniably earthy, I found it strangely satisfying, as though I was starting my day with something primal and deeply nutritious. It’s hard to describe, but imagine tasting the essence of ancient soil—not unpleasant but grounding, almost spiritual. And while I’m still waiting to fully experience all its potential health benefits, I can already feel a subtle yet significant difference in my energy and focus.
Of course, Shilajit isn’t an instant fix for every health issue. The full spectrum of its benefits can take time to manifest, and not everyone may experience the same results. That said, I’m excited to continue exploring this ancient remedy, knowing that I’m nourishing my body with something profoundly elemental.
How to Spot the Real Deal: Five Simple Tests
As with any supplement that garners hype, the market becomes flooded with imitations. Rachel Aceso, certified nutritionist and founder of Nature Provides, warns of counterfeit products that claim to be Shilajit but lack authenticity. To ensure you’re consuming the real deal, here are five simple tests you can conduct:
Texture: Authentic Shilajit is solid at room temperature and softens when warmed. If it remains gooey or overly liquid, be suspicious. Smell: The real stuff has a distinct, pungent, earthy odour, sometimes described as “ancient.” If your Shilajit smells sweet, it’s likely a fake. Burn Test: Genuine Shilajit doesn’t burn. If you expose it to a flame, it should bubble and turn to ash but never catch fire.
Solubility: Real Shilajit dissolves in water or milk, creating a reddishbrown liquid. It won’t dissolve in alcohol—so if it does, it’s fake. Seller Verification: Always buy from reputable sellers who offer labtested products, and don’t hesitate to ask for testing certificates.
Is Mountain Blood Worth the Hype?
Our health is constantly under assault from environmental stressors, nutrient deficiencies, and the daily stresses of modern life, it’s tempting to turn to ancient remedies for answers. Mountain Blood is not just another wellness trend—it’s a time-tested product with real potential. Whether it’s supporting energy levels, helping with hormone balance, or simply grounding you in your daily routine, this ancient Ayurvedic supplement offers a new way to reconnect with nature’s power.
So, is Mountain Blood for you? If you’re open to exploring the rich world of Ayurvedic medicine and curious about the potential benefits of an ancient, nutrient-dense resin, then perhaps it’s time to take a leap into the unknown. Your coffee may never be the same, but in a strangely comforting way.
Could this earthy elixir be the secret to unlocking better health? There’s only one way to find out—can you brave this ancient remedy?
