When people think of Ibiza, they often picture wild parties and loud nightclubs, but there is a whole other side to this island that is equally enchanting. My love affair with Ibiza began fifteen years ago. The island has since become a cherished escape for my family and me, providing countless memories of sun-kissed beaches and vibrant nightlife. However, this year, I yearned to experience Ibiza from a different perspective—as a solo traveler. This time, it wasn’t about the family-friendly spots or bustling clubs, but rather about connecting with the island’s tranquil and rejuvenating side. I decided to explore Ibiza on my own, immersing myself in its natural beauty and indulging in the health and wellbeing experiences it has to offer.
Upon arrival in Santa Eulalia, I was greeted by the enchanting sight of the Buenavista Boutique Hotel, its facade illuminated by pretty pink lights. Nestled in the historical and artistic heritage old town, this cozy and romantic retreat with a bohemian vibe immediately felt like home. The Mediterranean garden and the colonial-style architecture added a touch of magic to my stay. This hotel, the first in Santa Eulalia, dates back to 1933 and has a rich history, offering a unique blend of modern comforts and historical charm.
Despite arriving late in the evening, I refused to stay in my room, opting instead to head straight down to the seafront. The

gentle sound of waves lapping the beach comforted me, reassuring me that my decision to travel solo was the right one. Santa Eulalia, Ibiza’s third-largest resort, is known for its relaxed atmosphere, beautiful palm-lined promenade, and gastronomic and cultural scene. The next morning, I woke up early, eager to explore this charming town.
My first day was spent wandering through Santa Eulalia, including a visit to Puig de Missa, a small white church perched on a hill overlooking the town. The peaceful ambiance and charming interior of the church provided a perfect start to my day. For dinner, I chose Iza, a restaurant with stunning sea views. The fresh fish and potatoes paired with a mojito made for a perfect meal. As a solo diner, I found the experience very relaxing, and I even met another solo traveler. We chatted about health and wellbeing, and she shared her plans to join a retreat at Six Senses in Portinax.
The next morning, I had arranged a dawn photoshoot with a local photographer at Cala Mastella, a hidden cove surrounded by cliffs. This tiny, unspoiled beach with its clear, calm waters and bohemian vibe was a true gem. I spent the morning enjoying the serene environment. For lunch, I visited the famous El Bigotes restaurant, known for its fresh fish caught daily. The experience of dining without a menu, enjoying whatever the fishermen had brought in, was unique and delightful.
In the afternoon, I returned to the hotel for some rest and relaxation by the pool. Later, I met my new friend for dinner at Atenea, a restaurant that had just reopened for the season. We enjoyed a

delicious meal and the conversation flowed easily, making for a wonderful evening.
On my third day, I started with a morning swim in the sea, followed by breakfast at Passion Cafe. Their Ayurvedic Latte and Salmon & Eggs Royal were the perfect fuel for the day ahead. After breakfast, I took a ferry to Ibiza Town. The journey offered spectacular views and a chance to see the island from a different perspective.
Ibiza Town is a vibrant place with boutique shops, narrow streets, and hidden restaurants and bars. I stumbled upon a tiny bar with just enough space for a few bar stools, where I enjoyed some strong mojitos. After exploring the town, I walked towards Talamanca and the yacht marinas. The sight of luxurious yachts and the lively atmosphere was a stark contrast to the peaceful beaches I had visited earlier.
For dinner, I chose Laylah, a restaurant that offers a unique culinary journey through Middle Eastern flavours. The welcoming ambiance made it a special experience for a solo traveler. The exotic dishes and enchanting atmosphere made for an unforgettable evening.
On my last morning, I headed to Nativo for a sunrise yoga session on their roof terrace overlooking the sea. Nativo Hotel, located in the tranquil residential area of Siesta, offers a barefoot luxury experience surrounded by gardens, terraces, and natural light. The yoga session was the perfect way to start the day, leaving me feeling refreshed and centred.
After yoga, I visited the Revival Spa at Aguas de Ibiza. This spa, inspired by nature, offers a calming environment for physical,

mental, and spiritual wellbeing. I indulged in various pools, including the Thalasso pool, and even took a dip in the ice-cold plunge pool. I finished the day with a Clarins facial, feeling rejuvenated and relaxed.
For my final evening, I treated myself to dinner at STK Ibiza. Arriving for the first sitting at 8 PM, the restaurant soon filled with groups of friends, all dressed to impress. The menu catered to various dietary preferences, and I enjoyed a selection of dishes recommended by my server, Victoria. The highlight of the evening was the cocktails and entertainment. The Green Forest, a tequila-based cocktail, and the Cleopatra, made with Bombay Sapphire Gin, were both entertaining.
In five days, I experienced the quiet beaches, enjoyed fabulous food, walked 20,000 steps a day, practiced morning yoga, and met lovely people. I never once felt lonely and felt very much at home on the island. While I love travelling to Ibiza with my family, this solo trip allowed me to connect with the island in a new and meaningful way.
Ibiza is not just a party destination; it is a place of healing and rejuvenation, perfect for solo travel. For those seeking a serene and luxurious escape, the off-season months of April to June or September to October provide a quieter, more peaceful experience. Whether you’re exploring hidden coves, indulging in delicious cuisine, or enjoying a spa day, Ibiza has something for everyone.
My next solo visit is already in the planning stages, and I look forward to discovering even more of the island’s hidden gems. Ibiza is not just a party destination; it is a place of healing and rejuvenation, waiting to be explored.

FAD OR FUTURE OF HEALTH AND WELLBEING?
WORDS: RACHEL BRANSON
The landscape of health and wellbeing is ever-evolving, and more recently, the concept of biohacking has emerged as the latest buzzword. But what exactly does biohacking mean, and what does it entail?
Back in the early days of health and wellbeing events, the attendance was predominantly female. In fact, during our first workplace event with a local employer, the majority of participants were women. We spent three years attempting to attract men to learn about preventative health measures. The breakthrough came in the third year, when we introduced technology, utilising biofeedback and a software program, and saw a notable increase in male attendance. That was back in 2010.
Fast forward to 2024, and health events are now brimming with tech and gadgets. While this surge in technology has certainly piqued the interest of men seeking ways to stay fit and healthy, there seems to be an underlying expectation that this new tech will help them live much longer, as well as staying fit and healthy.
Attending health events with a healthy dose of skepticism is second nature to me. Over the last 18 years, I’ve witnessed a plethora of weird and wonderful treatments. So, wandering the halls of a recent biohacking summit, I was eager to discover new ideas, products, and gadgets, and to uncover those backed by science and personal testimonials.
The summit was a spectacle: men and women jumping into ice baths, sweating it out in infrared saunas, chilling in hyperbaric chambers, and being hooked up to IV infusions. For any newcomer, events like these can be overwhelming, making it easy to believe that there’s a quick-fix solution to a longer life. However, what I love is that people from all walks of life are interested
in making improvements, and even taking the first step in trying something new can be the catalyst for a healthier lifestyle.
If you are looking to delve deeper into the tech world of health and wellbeing, here’s a quick starter guide to the latest gadgets:
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurised chamber. This therapy is designed to enhance the oxygen level in the blood, promoting faster healing of wounds, reducing inflammation, and improving overall bodily function. Conditions like chronic fatigue, brain injuries, and even strokes have been shown to benefit from HBOT.
Quantum energy devices aim to combat the adverse effects of electromagnetic fields (EMF) that we are exposed to through various electronic devices. These gadgets, such as quantum pendants or plates, are said to harmonise the body’s energy field, enhance vitality, and improve mental clarity. While the scientific backing is still evolving, personal testimonials often highlight increased energy levels and better sleep.
Clean water and air are fundamental to health. The latest trends in water and air filtration systems promise to remove a wide range of toxins, pollutants, and allergens from our environment. Advanced filters can now eliminate microscopic particles, heavy metals, and bacteria, ensuring that what we consume and breathe is as pure as possible. For example, the latest models from Ideal Living provide multi-stage filtration systems that are essential for maintaining optimal health in polluted urban settings.

Bikes that offer a revolutionary approach to high-intensity interval training (HIIT) are leading the way. An AI-personalised bike that provides Reduced Exertion HIIT (REHIT), which delivers significant health benefits with just two 20-second sprints. This method is designed to maximise cardiovascular health, improve insulin sensitivity, and burn fat efficiently. The bike’s AI adapts to the user’s fitness level, ensuring a personalised and effective workout every time.

The resurgence of ice baths and cold water therapy is hard to miss. This method, often seen in elite athlete recovery routines, involves immersing the body in cold water to reduce inflammation, enhance mood, and boost immune function. Regular exposure to cold is said to increase resilience and improve circulation. Companies like Brass Monkey and Discover Monk offer stateof-the-art equipment and guidance for integrating cold therapy into your routine.
Infrared saunas use light to create heat, providing a range of health benefits, including detoxification, relaxation, pain relief, and improved circulation. Unlike traditional saunas, which heat the air around you, infrared saunas directly warm your body, making them more comfortable and effective. The therapeutic effects of infrared light can also aid in muscle recovery and enhance skin health.
LED light therapy has gained popularity for its non-invasive benefits in skin rejuvenation and wound healing. This therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to penetrate the skin, promoting collagen production and reducing inflammation. It’s an effective treatment for acne, aging skin, and minor injuries. LED masks and gadgets are now available for home use, making this technology accessible for everyday skincare routines.
Sleep is a critical component of health, and new technologies are emerging to help optimise our rest. From smart mattresses that adjust firmness based on your sleep position to devices that monitor sleep patterns and provide feedback, sleep tech aims to enhance the quality of your sleep. Companies like Eight Sleep offer mattresses that can track and improve your sleep through temperature regulation and data analysis.
Wearables have revolutionised how we approach fitness and health monitoring. Devices like the Apple Watch, Fitbit, and WHOOP Strap track everything from heart rate and activity levels to sleep patterns and
stress responses. These gadgets provide realtime feedback, helping users make informed decisions about their health and fitness routines. Advanced features, such as ECG monitoring and blood oxygen level tracking, are now standard in many wearables, offering a comprehensive health snapshot.
Nutrigenomics is the study of how our genes interact with the foods we eat. Personalised nutrition plans based on DNA testing are becoming more popular, aiming to optimise health and prevent diseases by tailoring diets to individual genetic profiles. Companies like 23andMe and Nutrigenomix provide insights into how you can adjust your diet to better suit your genetic makeup.
As we navigate this high-tech landscape of health and wellbeing, a question arises: Is biohacking merely a fleeting trend, or is it here to stay? While the allure of quick fixes and high-tech solutions is undeniable, we must also consider the timeless benefits of natural, holistic approaches.
Is it better to immerse ourselves in nature’s remedies, or should we embrace the advancements of modern technology? Perhaps the true path to optimal health lies in finding a balance between the two, integrating the best of both worlds to create a sustainable, holistic approach to wellbeing. The choice, ultimately, is yours. What will you choose?
Let this article inspire you to explore, question, and embark on your unique journey toward health and wellbeing, whether through cutting-edge technology, natural remedies, or a harmonious blend of both.

As someone who has spent 18 years reading, researching, and writing about wellbeing, I have often pondered whether our journey to optimal health is more about returning to nature rather than chasing complex solutions. Our bodies crave a natural environment—eating freshly produced food, moving in diverse ways, and syncing with the rhythm of the seasons. Yet, society’s demands have overcomplicated these simple truths, leaving our circadian rhythms out of balance.
“PEOPLE SPEND 90% OF THEIR TIME INDOORS, SURROUNDED BY ARTIFICAL LIGHTING THAT DISRUPTS OUR NATURAL RHYTHMS”
In a recent interview with Deepak Savadatti, CEO of BIOS, and Robert Soler, Chief Scientist, I discovered how their team is tackling this problem head-on. They have been working on ground-breaking circadian technology, developed by Robert as a NASA scientist, that promises to revolutionise our experience with light and restore harmony to our biological clocks. Their innovative approach aims to bring the natural lighting cycle indoors, helping us align with the rhythms that are essential for our health and wellbeing.
Lighting is one of the most overlooked aspects of our environment. We often take it for granted, assuming that as long as we can see and it’s energy efficient, it will suffice. However, lighting profoundly impacts our mood, productivity, and even our health. Imagine waking up naturally with the sunrise, experiencing a clear blue sky during the day, and unwinding under soft evening light. For most, this is a vacation fantasy. But what if you could replicate this experience every day, regardless of your environment or the weather outside?
Circadian rhythms are the body’s internal clocks, guiding our sleep-wake cycles, energy levels, and overall wellbeing. Misalignment
with the natural 24-hour day-night cycle can lead to numerous issues, including sleep disorders, fatigue, and even chronic health problems. Disrupted circadian rhythms contribute to insomnia, reduced focus, and mood disorders, impacting both personal and professional lives.
Understanding light’s role in this equation is crucial. Light temperatures, measured in Kelvin (K), range from warm colours like the glow of a campfire (2,000K) to the cool whites of a sunny day (5,000K). Cooler lighting, similar to natural sunlight, has been shown to improve alertness, energy, and mood, making it ideal for workplaces where productivity is key.

SKYVIEW™ offers a revolutionary approach to lighting by mimicking the natural cycle of light throughout the day. Robert Soler, one of the brains behind this technology, explained that the concept originated with his time at NASA, where astronauts needed a solution to mimic Earth’s day-night cycle while orbiting the planet every 90 minutes. The technology was so effective that it became clear its benefits could extend far beyond the confines of space. Their technology focuses on the “sky blue” wavelength, sending critical signals to our brain via melanopsin, a special photopigment in our eyes. Traditional indoor lights fail to target melanopsin effectively, leaving our circadian rhythms confused and misaligned. In contrast, SKYVIEW’s circadian lighting replicates the spectrum of natural light, helping regulate the body’s internal clock and improve wellbeing.
The real-world impact is impressive. Research conducted by Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital found significant benefits for its users, including a 12% boost in productivity, a 78% increase in motivation, and a 90% rise in attention within days of use. Users reported feeling a 190% increase in mental sharpness, akin to the alertness provided by an extra cup of coffee—without the caffeine crash.
SKYVIEW is not just a lamp; it’s a lifestyle transformation. Anecdotal evidence shows households using the technology experience improved energy levels, better sleep, and enhanced mood. Children wake up refreshed and ready for school, and families report fewer conflicts, feeling more balanced and in sync with nature.
The benefits are not limited to the home. Imagine workplaces where lighting supports natural circadian rhythms, boosting productivity and reducing stress. A major airline is exploring this technology to help aircrews cope with time zone shifts and unnatural lighting environments. They have already developed lighting panels for office ceilings, and their potential applications are vast.
Is your circadian rhythm out of balance? Look for signs such as sleep problems, performance issues, emotional difficulties, and health problems like obesity and heart disease. Misaligned rhythms can also increase accident risks and impair social interactions. SKYVIEW offers a simple yet powerful solution to realign our biological clocks and enhance our quality of life.
The BIOS mission is to redefine our relationship with light, transforming it from a mere necessity into a tool for enhancing wellbeing. Their vision is a world where restful nights and dynamic days are the norm, not luxuries. By embracing this technology, we have the opportunity to return to the natural rhythms our bodies crave and shine our brightest in all aspects of life. As we look to the future, SKYVIEW stands at the forefront of innovation, paving the way for a healthier, more balanced world.

When the mirror no longer reflects the person you once were, where do you find the strength to see beauty again?
Beyond the medical journey of battling cancer lies an equally profound challenge—reclaiming one’s identity, confidence, and self-love. The battle against breast cancer extends far beyond the medical sphere, affecting every facet of a woman’s life, including her self-image and mental wellbeing. For those who have endured the ravages of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgeries, the path to healing is not just physical but emotional. In this article, we look into the inspiring work of the Pink Ribbon Foundation, a charity dedicated to supporting women on this journey of rediscovery. We speak with Lisa Allen, the Head of Corporate Partnerships and Campaigns at the Foundation, about how they are helping women see beauty in themselves once again.
The Pink Ribbon Foundation’s story is one of resilience and dedication. Founded in 2000, the charity emerged from the ashes of a publishing company that initially supported breast cancer awareness through a special magazine. Lisa Allen, who was part of the original team producing the magazine, recalls the early days with a mix of nostalgia and pride. “We started as a small initiative during October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The magazine was very much like Cosmo or Marie Claire, but with a crucial difference—it wove breast cancer information seamlessly into its pages. From the
latest fashion trends to October shopping guides, it also included vital information about breast cancer, raising awareness in a unique and engaging way.”
However, working with three major breast cancer charities proved challenging, leading to the creation of the Pink Ribbon Foundation as a standalone charity. “At the end of the 90s, the decision was made to establish the Foundation as a charity because it was clear that a single entity could better manage the fundraising and distribution of funds,” Lisa explains. When the publishing company succumbed to a recession, Lisa found herself at a crossroads. “I lost my job, but the charity had become its own entity with trustees and independence. I just followed the charity and have been with it ever since, for 24 incredible years.”
As the Foundation approaches its 25th anniversary, Lisa reflects on its journey. “For 25 years, the Pink Ribbon Foundation has been more than just a charity; it has been a lifeline for countless women. We are a small team, just myself and three volunteer trustees, yet we’ve managed to create a profound impact. Our focus has always been on supporting smaller charities that make a big difference in the lives of those affected by breast cancer.”
One of the most powerful initiatives the Pink Ribbon Foundation has supported is the BOLD campaign, a collaboration with photographer Caroline Sikkenk. This campaign is not just about capturing images; it’s about redefining beauty in the face of adversity. Caroline’s BOLD project was born out of a conversation with her sister, Annemiek, who owns a shop that sells wigs and hairpieces to people who have lost their hair. Annemiek
shared a poignant story about a woman who burst into tears upon seeing herself in the mirror after chemotherapy. “She looked at herself and said, ‘I am so ugly,’” Lisa recounts. “But Annemiek saw something different. She saw the beauty in her face, in her strength, and wished that the woman could see herself through her eyes, even just for a moment.”
This moment of empathy sparked the idea for BOLD—a photography project that celebrates the beauty of women who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment or other health conditions like alopecia. Caroline quickly discovered that once the hair is gone, a different kind of beauty emerges. “Without hair, other features take the spotlight—cheekbones, freckles, the shape of the lips, the sparkle in the eyes. These women, without the framework normally provided by hair, radiate a pure, unfiltered beauty,” Lisa explains.
The BOLD campaign has become a global phenomenon, with Caroline photographing women from all over the world. In the UK alone, 13 women participated in the project, each bringing their unique story and strength to the lens. The campaign’s impact reached new heights when a video featuring these powerful images was displayed on the iconic Piccadilly Lights in London and in Times Square, New York. “Seeing those images up there was a surreal moment,” Lisa says. “It was a bold statement, showing the world that beauty is not defined by hair or conventional standards. These women are not just bald; they are BOLD—strong, courageous, and unapologetically themselves.”
The BOLD campaign doesn’t stop at photographs. Caroline has compiled these powerful images into a stunning A4 coffee table book, featuring 192 pages of women from all corners of the globe. “Our 13 UK ladies are in this book, which is set to be released for October’s Breast Cancer Awareness month,” Lisa shares. “It’s more than just a book; it’s a celebration of life, strength, and the unbreakable spirit of women.”

The Pink Ribbon Foundation’s mission extends beyond awareness; it’s about providing tangible support and empowerment to women who have faced breast cancer and other life-altering challenges. One of the most transformative collaborations is the “Love Thy Body” initiative devised by Serena Novelli, a six-month journey designed to uplift and empower women who have not only battled breast cancer but also endured other significant hardships, such as domestic abuse or recovery from comas.
“Love Thy Body is about reclaiming one’s self-worth and confidence,” Lisa explains. “The project, led by counsellor Serena, takes 20 women through personalised one-on-one counselling sessions, helping them navigate the emotional aftermath of their experiences.” But this journey is not just about talking—it’s about action. The program includes a strut master class with a dominatrix in London, aimed at helping these women rediscover their confidence. “It’s about finding that inner strength, that power within, and bringing it to the surface,” Lisa says with a smile.
The program culminates in a photoshoot set in the serene backdrop of the woods, followed by a grand gala in December, where these women will walk the catwalk in a fashion show. “Four of these women are also part of the BOLD campaign, which creates a beautiful link between these projects,” Lisa notes. “It’s all about connecting people, building a community, and showing these women that they are not alone in their journey.”
The Pink Ribbon Foundation’s impact is not limited to high-profile campaigns. Each year, the Foundation raises money through corporate partnerships and fundraisers—everything from marathons to bake sales. This money is pooled into a fund from which the Foundation awards grants to charities across the UK that support those affected by breast cancer. “This year alone, we’ve given away almost half a million pounds to 60 different charities. These funds go towards a wide range of services, from wig advice and counselling to alternative therapies and free holidays for families affected by breast cancer.”
One particularly story is that of a caravan purchased using a wonderfully generous donation from the Morrison family to the Pink Ribbon Foundation and a top up grant donated to the charity “Something to Look Forward To.” Located by the seaside in Norfolk, this caravan offers 48 free, weeklong holidays each year to families dealing with the terminal stages of breast cancer. “It’s more than just a holiday,” Lisa explains. “It’s a chance for families to create precious memories, to spend time together away from the hospital and treatment rooms. It’s about finding joy in the midst of sorrow.”
The Foundation’s emphasis on supporting small charities allows them to make a significant impact where it’s needed most.
“Because we’re a small team, we can operate efficiently and ensure that every penny goes where it’s needed,” Lisa says proudly. “We may not be the biggest charity out there, but we punch well above our weight when it comes to our profile and impact.”
At the heart of the Pink Ribbon Foundation’s success is its small but mighty team. “There’s just the four of us—myself and three volunteer trustees, including our chair, Jonathan, who has been with the Foundation almost as long as I have,” Lisa shares. “We all work from home, which keeps our overheads low and allows us to focus our resources on the people who need them most.”
Lisa’s personal journey with the Foundation is a testament to her passion and dedication. “I started out in publishing, but I fell in love with the charity and the work we were doing,” she says. “For the last 15 years, I’ve been working on a self-employed basis, which allows me to be more flexible and creative in my approach to fundraising and corporate partnerships. I’ve put myself out there, networking and organising events, all while trying to be synonymous with my pink hair and pink ribbon.”
This grassroots approach has allowed the Foundation to grow year on year. “We had our best year in 2019, and despite the challenges of COVID-19, we’ve continued to thrive,” Lisa says. “It’s been about getting creative with fundraising and finding new ways to engage with our supporters. The fact that we’ve managed to grow during such a difficult time is a testament to the strength of our community and the power of our mission.”
As the Pink Ribbon Foundation continues its work, it serves as a powerful reminder that beauty is not merely skin deep; it is found in the strength, courage, and resilience of every woman who refuses to
be defined by her struggles. Through campaigns like BOLD and initiatives like Love Thy Body, the Foundation helps women everywhere see that, no matter the scars, they are—and always will be—beautiful.
Where the focus often lies on external appearances, the Pink Ribbon Foundation challenges us to look deeper. “Our work is about more than just raising awareness; it’s about changing lives,” Lisa says. “It’s about showing women that they are not alone, that they are strong, and that they are beautiful just as they are.”
As they get ready to celebrate the Foundation’s 25th anniversary, we are reminded that its mission is as crucial today as it was at its inception. The Pink Ribbon Foundation continues to shine a light on the strength and beauty within us all, providing hope, support, and empowerment to those who need it most.

Finding quality time to bond with your teenage daughter can be challenging. Amidst school runs, packed schedules, and late nights, the essence of meaningful connection often gets lost. This realisation led me to plan a mini-escape with my teenage daughter to Congham Hall Hotel & Spa in King’s Lynn, Norfolk. Our mini spa break turned out to be more than just a relaxing break; it was a transformative experience that strengthened our relationship and highlighted the health and wellbeing benefits of taking such trips together. While spa breaks are traditionally seen as adult-only escapes, they offer a unique opportunity for mothers and daughters to bond.

Here’s how our spa retreat at Congham Hall Hotel & Spa enriched our relationship and provided invaluable life lessons:
The serene and tranquil environment of a spa is conducive to open and meaningful conversations. Away from the usual distractions of screens and daily chores, we found ourselves talking more freely and deeply.
Relaxing in the pool, sauna, and hot tub created the perfect setting for us to connect. We discussed everything from school stress to future dreams, uninterrupted by the usual noise of everyday life. This relaxed environment allowed us to share thoughts and experiences, strengthening our bond and understanding of each other.
One of the most significant lessons I learned was the importance of respecting each other’s personal rhythms. Initially, I was stressed when my daughter didn’t wake up early for breakfast. However, I soon realised that this break was as much for her as it was for me. Letting her sleep in allowed her to recharge, while I enjoyed my early morning walk alone. By embracing our individual preferences, our days started much better, and we both felt more relaxed and content.
Despite being taller than me now, my daughter is still young at heart and loves to play. The beautiful gardens and outdoor swing reminded us of the joy of simple pleasures. Watching her have fun in the water and on the garden swing highlighted the importance of balancing relaxation with playful activities. This balance helped her unwind and brought out her playful side, reinforcing the importance of maintaining a sense of fun and adventure in life.
A spa environment offers numerous health benefits, including physical relaxation and stress relief. We enjoyed the indoor pool, thermal suite, and luxurious treatments, which provided us with much-needed relaxation. My daughter, a former avid swimmer whose routine was disrupted by the pandemic, rediscovered her love for the water, which was both therapeutic and enjoyable.
Spending uninterrupted time together away from the stresses of everyday life had significant mental health benefits. We both felt more relaxed, happier, and more connected. The serene environment allowed us to disconnect from our daily routines and reconnect with each other, fostering a sense of peace and mental clarity.
Our retreat provided the perfect setting to strengthen our motherdaughter bond. Shared experiences, such as exploring the beautiful gardens and enjoying gourmet meals together, created lasting memories and deepened our connection. Dining together was a treat as our usual routine has us eating at different times. These shared meals were not just about the food but about enjoying each other’s company in a relaxed and elegant setting.

If you’re contemplating a retreat with your teenage daughter, I encourage you to take the leap. Here are some reasons why a spa break could be the perfect choice:
A spa retreat provides the perfect setting for spending quality time together. The peaceful environment allows for meaningful conversations and shared experiences that strengthen your bond.
The physical relaxation and mental health benefits of a spa break are significant. Both you and your daughter will return home feeling rejuvenated, relaxed, and happier.
Shared experiences, such as enjoying spa treatments, dining together, and exploring beautiful surroundings, create lasting memories. These memories will be cherished and provide a foundation for a strong and healthy relationship.
By taking a spa break together, you’re teaching your daughter the importance of self-care and relaxation. This is a valuable lesson that she can carry with her throughout her life.
Our weekend at Congham Hall Hotel & Spa left us both relaxed and ready to tackle the final weeks of school before the summer holidays. My daughter loved the experience, and so did I. This trip has inspired me to plan more mother-daughter getaways in the future.
By sharing this special time with my daughter, I not only reconnected with her but also reinforced the importance of self-care and relaxation. As Wellbeing Magazine returns to print, Kate Arnold takes a moment to reflect on the profound changes in the world of Lifestyle Medicine over the past 18 years. Since becoming the Resident Nutrition Consultant, she’s witnessed a dramatic evolution in our approach to health, shaped by societal shifts, technological advances, and even global challenges like COVID-19. In this special edition, she’ll explore how far we’ve come, the obstacles we’ve faced, and what lies ahead in our ongoing quest for better health and wellbeing.
To celebrate the launch of Wellbeing Magazine eighteen years ago, I thought I’d reflect on what has happened in the realm of Lifestyle Medicine. I was so honoured to be the Resident Nutrition Consultant for almost all of that time covering the most up to date health topics and still have every single copy of the magazine in date order sitting on my office bookshelves. Since the start of the magazine, there has been so much change for good and bad. So much in fact that it can leave your head spinning, and of course we’ve all been through a little thing called Covid. So I thought for this special edition I’d have a nostalgic look at what has happened since then and try to conclude whether we are in fact better off or worse in terms of our attitudes to our health.
When the magazine started in 2006 we had not reached the dizzying heights of the impact of social media, wouldn’t have known an influencer if we’d bumped into them and had only just started to really talk about the gut microbiome. Gnarls Barcley was No 1 with Crazy and we were still living out the Bush/Blair years. In many ways it feels a simpler time, that might of course be my age plus a good old dollop of nostalgia talking! But to be fair our country and the world in general has taken a bit of a battering since then; we have

gone through Brexit, the death of our monarch and the awful realisation that Britain might actually be broken. These issues compiled together have fractured our society and in many ways I think we are suffering more. Social media has dramatically influenced various aspects of life, including nutrition. Platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube have given rise to a new form of democratised information dissemination, where anyone with an internet connection can share their thoughts, opinions, and experiences related to food and nutrition. This has resulted in both positive and negative effects on public health and nutritional behaviours. But Lifestyle Medicine itself has undergone significant transformation over the last two decades, becoming more mainstream and widely recognized within the broader healthcare system. For this I am grateful as it was much needed.
And then of course on top of this Covid hit. From 2021 to 2023 I saw a huge surge in mental health issues, post covid and long covid patients, which brought a different challenge to my day to day clinic. Although most people got the message, we must look after our health, how we coped was very different from one person to another. With lockdowns came day time drinking and an increase in junk food consumption. It seems you either went one way, Joe Wicks, and walked 10,000 steps a day or gave up entirely through stress and fear as a way of coping. The pandemic certainly led to increased consumption of comfort foods, which are often high in calories, sugar, and fat.
Although social media brought us together in lockdown we now know it has devastated an entire nation of teenagers (do read Jonathan Haidt’s The Anxious Generation). Perhaps we have reached the tipping point and are wiser and more cautious now with allowing
children to see the world in their hands. Certainly the law is changing in terms of how often children can be exposed to their screens. On top of this a whole generation of students missed out on a true college/university experience and the consequences of that will run on and on. We won’t know how severely they were impacted for many years to come.
On a more upbeat note, the rise and acceptance of Lifestyle Medicine as a way to prevent modern day disease is having its moment and it rode on the zeitgeist of self care which in many ways was useful. Twenty years ago, Lifestyle Medicine was relatively niche, often seen as complementary or alternative. Today, it is widely accepted as a core component of preventive and therapeutic care. Public awareness about the role of lifestyle factors—such as diet, exercise, stress management, sleep, and social connections—in disease prevention has grown significantly.
I have seen such forces of good on Instagram where people can access those in need of nutritional information quickly and easily and more importantly it’s free. Another positive with the passing of time is using the term root cause. Eighteen years ago the phrase would have put you firmly in the Quack box. In addition to this, mainstream orthodox medicine are accepting of early childhood trauma as a route to disease. This would never have happened before so in many ways we have come a long way.
Working with GP’s and Consultants has never been easier. There is understanding that they don’t have all the answers, and people need a multidisciplinary approach. But there is further to go, patients have become increasingly frustrated at what they see as being “fobbed off” with more and more medications, especially so in chronic health conditions. We also need to eradicate the medical gaslighting and it’s all in your head narrative which is still hanging on from the Victorian era. I’m still surprised to see many female patients telling me this is still happening. This is not ok, we have to do better for our patients, and believing them is not a bad place to start. Begin with the assumption that they are telling the truth, make sure they are heard and go from there.
Looking forward for a moment, we don’t know what’s coming down the line; the NHS is where it is, waiting lists are long so it’s even more important to take control of as much as you can in your environment and through lifestyle changes. Looking even further ahead, AI brings its own levels of division, whilst we can look forward to groundbreaking life saving technology we are also missing “the good old days”, the human link, the face to face appointments with GPs that are now rare. I’m hoping we have reached the tipping point with this, but I fear it might get worse. Certainly this year 2024, more of my patients are seeking private health and paying out of their pocket.
So in conclusion I think in many ways we haven’t come as far as I’d hoped. The sheer volume of information that can be accessed is making for more and more confusion. So I still suggest one on one personalised advice as everyone has different needs and requirements. But like fashion, there will be another latest and greatest thing around the corner soon, so in the meantime, eat wholefoods, avoid social media/phones where you can, get into nature, stay local and just breathe!

Imagine lying down in a serene environment, lulled to sleep by the gentle hum of bees. This isn’t a scene from a fantasy novel; it’s a wellness trend that promises a host of health benefits. But what exactly are bee beds, and how can they enhance our wellbeing?
Bee beds, also known as apiary therapy or bee therapy, involve sleeping on specially designed beds placed above active beehives. These beds are constructed to allow the vibrations and sounds from the bees below to permeate the sleeping surface without direct contact with the insects. The concept is rooted in apitherapy, an ancient practice that uses products from bees—including honey, propolis, and royal jelly—for healing purposes.
The gentle vibrations and rhythmic buzzing produced by bees have been found to induce a state of deep relaxation, similar to the effects of meditation or sound therapy. Here are some of the key health benefits:
Enhanced Relaxation and Stress Relief: The calming hum of bees can help reduce stress and anxiety, promoting a sense of peace and tranquility. The vibrations act as a natural form of sound therapy, which can lower cortisol levels and help combat chronic stress.
Improved Sleep Quality: Many people report better sleep quality after spending time on a bee bed. The soothing environment can help those suffering from insomnia or disrupted sleep patterns achieve more restful and restorative sleep.
Pain Relief: Vibrations from the beehive can stimulate the body’s natural pain-relief mechanisms. Some users have found relief from chronic pain conditions, including arthritis and fibromyalgia, after regular sessions on a bee bed.
Boosted Immune System: Proponents of apiary therapy suggest that the proximity to the bees and their environment can enhance the immune system, potentially reducing the frequency and severity of illnesses.
While bee beds are not yet widespread, several wellness retreats and apiaries around the world offer this unique therapy. In Eastern Europe, particularly in countries like Slovenia and Ukraine, bee bed therapy is more established and integrated into holistic health practices. Some apiaries in the United States and other parts of Europe are also beginning to offer bee bed experiences.
Bee bed therapy is ideal for anyone seeking a natural way to reduce stress, improve sleep, and enhance overall wellbeing. It can be particularly beneficial for individuals with high-stress lifestyles, those struggling with chronic pain, and anyone looking to improve their mental health through relaxation and nature-based therapies. However, it’s important for potential users to ensure they are not allergic to bee stings, even though direct contact with the bees is avoided.
Bee bed therapy embodies the essence of reconnecting with nature to heal and rejuvenate. It offers a unique and inspiring way to tap into the natural world’s healing powers, promoting a holistic approach to health that is both ancient and innovative. As more people seek out alternative and complementary therapies, the gentle buzz of bee beds could become a soothing solution for modern-day ailments. Whether you’re a wellness enthusiast or someone seeking new ways to enhance your health, sleeping with bees might just be the sweet retreat you need.

WORDS: RACHEL BRANSON
Travel has always been a way for me to reconnect with myself, even from an early age. My journey began at 16 with an exchange trip to the Netherlands, travelling independently to stay with a host family. Since then, the allure of exploring new destinations, meeting kindred spirits, and savouring life’s luxuries has never faded. Those early trips taught me the art of navigating the unknown and the thrill of self-discovery, a theme that continues to resonate in my travels today.
Recently, as I joined a women’s solo travel group on Facebook, I discovered a community of adventurous spirits offering invaluable travel wisdom. Their stories inspired me to rekindle my own wanderlust, reminding me that I am more than just a mother and wife but the same adventurous girl I was in my teens.
Although I was travelling solo, this pilates trip was organised through Flavours Holidays. Puglia Italy, welcomed me with its sundrenched landscapes and the villa, nestled amidst ancient olive groves, was a testament to rustic elegance. The exclusivity of the accommodation set the tone for an indulgent escape. I was delighted to stay in a Trullo, a charming circular dwelling unique to Puglia, with its stone walls and cosy interiors offering a serene retreat from the heat of the sun.
Each day began with a refreshing 7:45 am Pilates session under the rising sun, which helped us beat the severe heat with a fabulous ocean breeze to keep us cool. Our instructor, Kathy, guided us through invigorating sessions that rejuvenated both body and mind. These daily rituals were complemented by gourmet meals crafted by Mina, featuring organic produce harvested from the villa’s gardens. Our culinary journey was a highlight, with simple ingredients transformed into delicious dishes that celebrated the flavours of

the region. The evenings were spent savouring the taste of freshly prepared meals accompanied by a glass of Prosecco, local wine and fostering camaraderie among our group.
Exploring the Richness of Puglia
The retreat was not just about Pilates but also about immersing ourselves in the cultural richness of Puglia. We embarked on excursions that revealed the area’s beauty and history. A boat ride around the ‘heel of Italy’ at Santa Maria di Leuca offered breath-taking views and a chance to swim in the turquoise Ionian Sea. Exploring Lecce, often dubbed the ‘Florence of the South,’ was a cultural feast, with its baroque architecture and hidden culinary gems.
There was a cooking lesson where we learned to make Parmigiana, connecting us to Puglia’s culinary heritage. We strolled through local markets in Patu and shopped in Tricase, each outing enriching our understanding of this vibrant region.
The Health Benefits of Pilates and Wellness
The retreat was a holistic journey toward revitalising both body and mind. Daily Pilates sessions restored my physical vitality, while the Mediterranean diet nourished my soul, leaving me refreshed and rejuvenated. Despite indulging in more Prosecco and wine than usual, I returned home with a noticeably flatter tummy, a testament to the benefits of a balanced lifestyle.
This experience emphasised the empowerment that comes from stepping beyond one’s comfort zone. Travelling with women who share a passion for adventure broadened my horizons and reinforced the sense of community that comes from exploring the world together.
A Perfect Escape for Solo Travelers
This retreat was the perfect holiday for women who want to travel solo but are perhaps a bit nervous about being completely on their own. It offered the benefits of meeting like-minded people while allowing for personal independence. I was incredibly fortunate to have travelled with these remarkable women, forming connections that felt as if they had been forged over years rather than just a week. As I returned to the UK, I carried with me not just the warmth of the Italian sun but a renewed sense of self. This journey reinforced that travel, at its best, is a catalyst for transformation—a reminder that even as we age, the world remains a canvas for our dreams.
Looking Ahead:
For those seeking a perfect blend of adventure and luxury, solo travel offers an unparalleled opportunity for self-discovery and growth. Whether it’s a Pilates retreat in Puglia or a painting holiday in Tuscany, embrace the journey and uncover the magic that awaits. With so many destinations to explore, I am already looking forward to discovering more, perhaps a photography holiday in Tuscany or Pilates in Andalusia, which also comes highly recommended.
Flavours Holidays has been going strong since 1998, when they were founded by Lorne Blyth. Initially, Flavours offered just week-long holidays in Lazio, Italy, but that soon changed. Today, their specialist holidays have expanded their reach to include Tuscany, Sicily, Puglia, Umbria, Bologna, and Venice. They also offer retreats in Andalusia and Seville in Spain and have recently added Marrakech to their offerings. Their activities range from cooking and painting to Pilates, photography, and language-learning, providing a wealth of opportunities for travellers seeking unique experiences.

For Mark Gomes, the search for the soul has been a lifelong journey, shaped by his early experiences with faith, his struggle with doubt, and his eventual return to spirituality. Raised in a devout Catholic household, Gomes’ early years were steeped in religious teachings. Yet, as he grew older, he found himself questioning the very beliefs that had once provided him with a sense of certainty. The resulting loss of faith left him adrift, searching for meaning in a world that suddenly seemed devoid of it. But it was this very search that eventually led him back to the idea of the soul—a concept he now explores in his debut novel, The Heavy Butterfly.
The Heavy Butterfly is more than just a work of fiction; it is a reflection of Gomes’ inner journey and an invitation for readers to embark on their own explorations of life’s most profound questions. At its heart, the novel grapples with the existence of the soul, the purpose of life, and what happens after we die. It is a story that flutters between the realms of science, spirituality, and philosophy, offering insights into what our existence might mean and how a soul might exist in us, in this world, and somewhere beyond.
“I don’t like the idea of death being the end,” Gomes confesses. “Growing up Catholic, I was taught to believe in the afterlife, but as I got older, I struggled to hold onto that belief. I became more hopeful, wanting to believe in something more—something like the soul. But if the soul exists, then what happens to it after we die? Where does it go?” These questions became the impetus for Gomes to write The Heavy Butterfly. “I wanted to see if I could find a logical answer, not just for myself, but for anyone willing to ponder these difficult questions.”
The metaphor of the butterfly is central to Gomes’ exploration of the soul. Butterflies are often seen as symbols of transformation, representing the journey from one state of being to another. Gomes takes this metaphor further, introducing the concept of the “heavy butterfly”—a symbol for the soul’s journey beyond the physical realm. “People are beautiful and fragile, just like butterflies,” he explains. “But in the afterlife, we undergo a transformation. The soul becomes something more substantial, something heavy with the weight of our emotions and experiences. The ‘heavy butterfly’ is the soul that has taken on this new form.”
For Gomes, writing The Heavy Butterfly was a therapeutic process, a way to confront his own fears and uncertainties about death and the afterlife. But it was also a way to stimulate broader conversations about these topics, which are often avoided in everyday life. “I hoped that the book would be interesting enough to make people think,” he says. “Not to give definitive answers, but to encourage open discussions. Death, grief, and the afterlife are subjects that impact our wellbeing on a deep level, yet we rarely talk about them.”
Gomes knows firsthand the emotional toll that grief can take. The novel is deeply influenced by his own experiences, particularly the loss of his father seven years ago. “Melancholy set in after he

passed away, and that sense of loss never fully goes away,” he reflects. “Grief is a part of life, and it affects our wellbeing in ways we don’t always acknowledge. I wanted to write something that would provide comfort to those who are grieving, something that would help them feel less alone in their sorrow.”
The Heavy Butterfly also touches on themes of diversity and identity, topics that are particularly relevant in today’s society. The story’s protagonist, Amber, is a young girl who challenges traditional notions of gender and orientation. Through her journey, Gomes explores the complexities of identity and the labels we give ourselves, encouraging readers to embrace their true selves. “There are a lot of parents and children struggling with identity issues today,” Gomes notes. “I wanted to write a story that would resonate with them, that would help them see that they’re not alone in their struggles.”
“The book is about a father’s love for his daughter and his quest to understand her, even after she’s gone,” he explains. “If my book can give people some thoughts in this direction, if it can help them navigate the complexities of love, loss, and identity, then that would be wonderful.”
Gomes doesn’t see The Heavy Butterfly as the end of his journey as a writer. He is already contemplating a sequel, as well as other projects that explore philosophical themes. “I’m fascinated by the intersection of philosophy and modern technology, particularly AI,” he says. “There’s a lot of excitement around AI right now, but I think we need to approach it thoughtfully, from a philosophical perspective. I’m interested in exploring these ideas in my future work.”
Ultimately, The Heavy Butterfly is a book for anyone who is grappling with the big questions of life—the meaning of existence, the nature of the soul, and what happens after we die. It is a book that offers comfort in times of grief, encourages self-reflection, and fosters open discussions about topics that are often shrouded in silence.
As The Heavy Butterfly takes flight, Mark Gomes hopes it will find its way into the hands of readers who, like him, are searching for answers. “If my book can help even one person to feel more at peace with these existential questions,” he says, “then it will have served its purpose.”
The Heavy Butterfly is available in paperback and ebook formats at all good bookshops and online booksellers. For those interested in metaphysical fiction like The Alchemist or The Five People You Meet in Heaven, Gomes’ debut offers a compelling and thought-provoking read.

A lot has happened in my life, both marvellous and extremely challenging and I am ever more positive about embracing midlife and whatever fate next decides to throw at me. At 55 I am firmly in my middle age and I have never felt better, physically and emotionally. I believe there is something wonderful that happens to women as they mature, we get better at understanding ourselves and the world around us. Lucy Worsley described it wonderfully when talking about the success Agatha Christie found in mid life, negotiating her own contracts and buying a house in her own name, unimaginable in that era, that she was ‘coming into her power’. This is a phrase which keeps coming back to me as I face the usual daily challenges whilst feeling so much less stressed and anxious about them than a younger me would have.
As a younger adult I worked incredibly hard to progress up the career ladder of the London commercial interiors scene, very nearly burning myself out with ridiculously long hours and feeling an immense burden of personal responsibility for the projects I was running. I had always hoped to become a mother and after I became pregnant I thought that starting a family might also free me from this near constant anxiety.
My then boss offered to demote me in exchange for working ‘normal’ hours. I was struggling with undiagnosed post natal depression and I was overwhelmed by the idea of trying to carry on working as I had before and the much more significant responsibility of looking after my beautiful baby. My then husband and I made a big decision, we decided to move back to Scotland where his employer had an office, and we would be able to afford for me to focus on bringing up our children.
Even though I love Glasgow and had studied at GSA, I was not prepared for the shock of leaving my hometown, my friends, my family and my high flying career. I felt cast adrift, lonely and unsupported and I did not seek help for my state of mind, instead
starting to work at GSA part time and starting my residential interiors business, both in such a way that I could still focus primarily on parenting. I had another baby two years later and I just carried on, distracting myself by being busy. I made some amazing friends through the children and they were a lifeline. We were able to talk frankly to each other as pre-professional women who had variously adjusted our career expectations and at the same time absolutely adored being parents. I eventually found the courage to admit that I needed help, the GP put me on antidepressants which were a useful sticking plaster, feeling I didn’t have time to indulge myself with the time and expense of talking therapy, until I gradually re-found my sense of self.
I carried on dashing about for the kids, working two jobs, trying remotely to support my mum in her struggles looking after my ailing father whilst slipping into the traditional role of keeping house, what would my firebrand feminist younger self have thought?!
Then my 40s hit: my marriage unexpectedly ended, my business partner and I parted ways, I had financial struggles, a new 5 year relationship stopped for no reason I could understand, both of my parents died in quick succession and my boys became adults. I had a breakdown in the immediate aftermath of my divorce but I chose to survive, as the saying goes, I made lemonade from all those lemons!
This time I took a different approach, failed attempts at marriage guidance counselling had actually shown me the value of talking things through with a professional. I started seeing a therapist regularly, she helped me to reframe how I looked at all aspects of my life, she taught me that looking after myself was truly the best way of making sure you can look after those around you. I don’t currently see her but I take great comfort knowing that I can dip in and out when I need a mental health MOT.
With her help I have learned to relish the positive things in life, however small they are, and I no longer cope with problems by barging belligerently through them. I give myself time to think, I journal from time to time to keep myself honest with myself, I do a LOT of pilates, I read voraciously, I do needlepoint, I dance, I eat mostly plant based home prepared food and I only drink occasionally. I have a group of female friends that I love and cherish, we are all so different but we are all discovering this incredible power that can come in later life. I am happily single and have healthy mutually nurturing relationships with my family and friends who accept me for all my eccentricities. I have learned to say yes or no to things for considered reasons. I try not to think too far into the future as I have learned that you can never predict what curve balls are coming, I aim to be authentic in all aspects of my life and I believe this is the best safety net in times of trouble and the best strategy when trying something new that might have previously felt scary - like going on TV or starting my own brand!
It may have taken me a long time to get to this point, my current contentedness is hard won and still requires work. I have no regrets because I have learned that whatever you experience makes you you. Heartbreak and loss have only sharpened my appetite for happiness. I care about people and the world very much but my 50s is the decade of not giving a damn what people think, I intend to get the most possible out of the rest of my life, to keep learning, loving and most importantly having fun.

GAIL LYNN EXPLORES THE SCIENCE BEHIND SOUND & LIGHT THERAPIES
What is the science behind energy medicine and the emerging therapies of sound and light? It’s a question I have found myself having to answer on many occasions these days. The term is not well defined and linked with pseudo-scientific ideas about healing, not helped by the increasing number of unqualified “quacks” calling themselves energy healers. Despite this, “energy medicine” has recently gone mainstream, its roots are ancient, and there is plenty of evidence backed by scientific research for its value and efficacy.
Let’s start with a credible definition. The US government’s lead agency for research on non-conventional medicine, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), describes energy medicine as the “act of channeling and manipulating the energy that courses through your body to heal it.” And the truth is that many well-renowned institutions across the US now have departments practicing and researching “energy” in the body, including UCLA, The Cleveland Clinic, and John Hopkins.
At the same time, growing numbers of people are experiencing for themselves the potential healing benefits of sound, light, and color as medicine, an adjunct to other “energetic” healing methods, and I only see those numbers growing in importance and usage. We can all agree that Western medicine has made tremendous scientific breakthroughs, but it is not a panacea. Some of us, sick and tired of not living to our full potential, are open to other healing modalities that complement and sometimes replace the western medical paradigm. My team of scientists and engineers have leaned into the ancient and current cutting-edge science of sound, light, and frequencies to develop a pod that promotes healing by harnessing their effects on our emotional, mental, and physical states. The thousands of people who have tried it attest to its benefits.
For centuries, mystics argued that sound creates matter and that all things, from the biggest planet to the smallest seed, are coagulations of sound waves; in effect, the world reflects infinite combinations of sound patterns. Scientists who examined these ancient teachings agree that the galaxies are not randomly arranged but are gravitationally bound patterns of clusters. And now, new research suggests that primordial sounds from the moment immediately following the big bang created this cluster pattern. Just as the human body is a cluster pattern of matter, certain instruments affect the body in specific ways. For example, the sound wave of the flute is the most primordial sound wave used by the ancients for healing. The Bible tells us that young David’s harp music was the only thing that soothed the tormented soul of King Saul.
In our research, we see the different waveforms of instruments affecting the matter of the body, bringing harmony and balance to the organs and systems of those who try our sound and light therapy pod. By bringing balance to the organs and systems, we create an environment for the body to self-heal.
According to the Greek philosopher Pythagoras, who lived around 2,500 years ago, music contributes significantly to health. The earliest known culture to use sound healing for health was the Aboriginal people of Australia. Playing the didgeridoo was believed to help heal broken bones, muscle tears, and other illnesses. Sound healing has gained traction in the modern world thanks to the pioneering research of sound healers like Jonathan Goldman, Dr. John Beaulieu, and Kay Gardner.
Dr. Beaulieu was involved in a study titled, Sound Therapy Induced Relaxation: Down Regulating Stress Processes and Pathologies. The study showed that music induced positive emotions and subsequent relaxation in patients centering on music’s ability to reduce feelings of anxiety, stress, and numerous other pathologies. The study also proposes that nitric oxide (NO) is the molecule chiefly responsible
for these physiological and psychological relaxing effects. Furthermore, the importance of this molecule extends beyond the mechanistic; it is integral to the development of the process that it mediates. Nitric oxide aids the development of the auditory system participating in cochlear blood flow and the induced exhibited physiological effects.
Interestingly, various tissues from vertebrates and invertebrates respond to external signal molecules by rapidly releasing nitric oxide (NO) when exposed to music. Not all music produces these results, though, so when creating music for our sound and light therapy pod, I consult with musicians with high heart energy to produce music tracks imbued with love.
Further proof of music’s health benefits was revealed in 2015 by Dr. Dominique Surel, the Dean of Faculty, and a professor at Energy Medicine University (EMU, California). As a Council Member of the Society for Scientific Exploration (SSE) and Co-Founder of the World Institute for Scientific Exploration (WISE), she gave a lecture on the Power of Sound and Music at a conference in Helsinki, in which she shared evidence from a slew of scientific studies. For example, she described how music listening impacted the psychobiological stress system, releasing endorphins and increasing the body’s pain tolerance. When music is listened to before a stress-filled situation, the autonomic nervous system, the unconscious part of us that controls our physiological reactions to stress, is impacted to a lesser degree.
In 2013, the Journal of Pediatrics published a study demonstrating that mothers who sing lullabies to premature babies reduce stress levels in the child. The babies’ heartbeats slowed, the babies became calmer, and the blood oxygen saturation increased. Another study commissioned by Baltimore Hospital Coronary Care Unit, revealed that 30 minutes of classical music produces the same effect on the body as 10 mg of the pain killer Valium. In contrast, a Johns Hopkins University study showed Rock music causes people to eat more food and eat it faster.
In her Helsinki lecture, Dr. Surel spoke about the work of French musician, composer, acupuncturist, and researcher, Fabien Maman, who was the first to link music with acupuncture. He created a system that uses tuning forks instead of needles on acupuncture command points. Maman described Sound Therapy as a “treatment based on the finding that human blood cells respond to sound frequencies by changing color and shape.” Maman hypothesized that sick or rogue cells could be healed or harmonized by sound.
Light and color are essential to our health and well-being. Light nourishes the body and stimulates and supports our important endocrine system, organs, and immune system. We are, in essence, beings of light and vibration from source. We require color and light to support our innate ability to self-heal. Dr. Jacob Liberman trained as an optometrist and vision scientist and is a pioneer in studying light, vision, and consciousness. Dr. Liberman writes about treating cancer, AIDS, and other illnesses using color and light, which he calls “an essential nutrient.”
In The Ancient Art of Color Therapy, Linda Clark outlines the possibility

GAIL LYNN, INVENTOR, AUTHOR, FILMMAKER
that colors link to replenishing vitamins for the body. For example, she suggests reds and oranges can replenish B vitamins, and yellow can replenish vitamin A.
While I have been able to outline only a handful of the most significant evidence demonstrating the significance of energy medicine and sound and light therapies, research continues with many scientists exploring the efficacy of sound, light, and frequencies as powerful healing tools. The ancients’ intuitive understanding of sound and light on human physical and emotional states is finally receiving attention and study. We are at the beginning of our knowledge of energy medicine as a complement to healing techniques. I hope this information sparks your mind to explore energy medicine for yourself, be discerning, and ask questions about how your body will best benefit from the many available options.

WE’RE THREADS IN ONE VAST, WOVEN NET, PEOPLE, CREATURES, EARTH—ONE SET, YET STILL WE TEAR, WE BRUISE, WE BREAK, HOW CAN WE HARM FOR HARM’S OWN SAKE?
IF ALL THINGS TOUCH, WHERE IS THE PAIN? WHEN RIVERS WEEP, SHOULD NOT WE STRAIN TO HEAR THEIR CRIES, TO FEEL THEIR FEAR? DO WE BLIND OURSELVES, REFUSE TO HEAR?
IS PEACE TOO DISTANT, TOO FAR TO HOLD, AS WE CHASE WHAT’S SHINY, WHAT GLITTERS GOLD? DO WE NUMB OUR HEARTS, CLOSE OUR EYES, SO WE CAN’T SEE THE TEARS, THE SILENT CRIES?
AWAKEN, HEARTS, TO WHAT IS REAL, LET CONNECTIONS SPARK, LET US FEEL. HEAL THE EARTH, OURSELVES, EACH OTHER, FOR IN THIS WEB, WE’RE ALL ONE—SISTERS, BROTHERS.

Over the last 18 years, I have had the privilege of interviewing countless individuals who radiate a profound inner light. These are the people whose presence alone can inspire and uplift you, urging you to be the best version of yourself. Sitting across from Liana Cornell was like being in the presence of an ethereal being. Her softspoken nature, the warmth in her eyes, and the love that seemed to emanate from her every word made this interview one of the most memorable. As we discussed her new album, Rising, and the personal healing journey that shaped it, I was reminded of the incredible power of resilience and the beauty of turning pain into art. Liana Cornell is a multi-faceted artist whose highly anticipated album, Rising, is set to release on October 31st, coinciding with the Celtic New Year. I was fortunate enough to hear the first track, “Anam Cara” (Soul Friend), ahead of our interview. The song, released in August, left me captivated by its depth and beauty. Inspired by healing frequencies that align with the chakras, Liana’s music is a reflection of her own journey through illness and grief, particularly the loss of her father, who has continued to guide her through this transformative process.
Sitting across from Liana, it was hard to reconcile the vibrant, healthy woman before me with the story of her diagnosis with a condition—a condition she was told she would live with for the rest of her life. Yet, Liana’s belief and determination have proven that when you put your mind to something, anything is possible. She is well on her way to full recovery, a journey she attributes to her upbringing in Byron Bay, surrounded by healers and mystics who gave her the confidence and knowledge to overcome her diagnosis.
“I come from a line of women who are very into herbalism and homeopathy,” Liana began, reflecting on her childhood. “I also grew up with a lot of nature-based practices around, like Wicca and Celtic lineage, and things like that. I am from Byron Bay, which, when I was growing up, was like a hotspot of all different wellbeing modalities. I started meditating and practicing yoga when I was really young.”
Byron Bay, known for its strong spiritual and healing energy, played a significant role in shaping Liana’s approach to health and wellness. “It’s a very feminine, healing energy,” she explained. “It’s where the rainforest meets the ocean, and it’s really special. Growing up in that environment, you experience things that others may not. I would see people meditating in the middle of the street, and there was a lot of gratitude practice and things like that.”
Her wellness journey, deeply intertwined with her spiritual journey, took on new urgency when she was diagnosed with a disease in her 20s. “I brought into practice all the things I had learned growing up—through food, meditation,” Liana said. “I became a Reiki healer, then a Reiki master, which, along with other holistic practices, and within three months, helped me manage my condition in ways I hadn’t expected, as told I would have for the rest of my life. I think it was very stress-related too.”
Liana’s story is a testament to the power of holistic healing. “My experience with the condition has been unique, and I’ve been fortunate to find ways that significantly improved my quality of life.” she continued. “I think that not only having a really good relationship with food, growing my own food, and all the things I had learned, like the work of Louise Hay, it helped me to see the patterns in my illness and how they were all connected emotionally, and helping me finding the root cause.”
As Liana continued her journey of self-healing, she began to explore the healing frequencies of music. This exploration eventually led to the creation of her album Rising, which transports listeners on a journey through the seven chakras. Each track created to enhance relaxation and mental wellbeing, utilising scientifically proven frequencies such as 396 Hz, 417 Hz, and 528 Hz to promote mindfulness and healing.
“I started working on this album, and as I had finished recording the first song, which is the first single, I received the news that my father was dying,” Liana shared. “I spent the next four hours singing to him and telling him stories, kind of guiding him into the next realm. The rest of the album really took on a deeply healing journey.”

I STARTED WORKING ON THIS ALBUM, AND AS I HAD FINISHED RECORDING THE FIRST SONG, WHICH IS THE FIRST SINGLE, I RECEIVED THE NEWS THAT MY FATHER WAS DYING

What struck me most about Liana’s music is its accessibility. “What people hear when they listen to it doesn’t necessarily sound like healing music,” she explained. “I wanted it to be multi-genre to reach different people who wouldn’t necessarily listen to healing music.”
Indeed, when I first listened to “Anam Cara,” I expected it to sound like New Age music. Instead, it was the type of music I could easily imagine playing on the radio alongside mainstream artists. Liana’s goal was to make healing music available and accessible to people who may not have considered listening to it before.
“The album was really allowing me to hold on to something through the healing process,” she said. “Music is one of the most powerful tools that we have. The frequencies are based off Gregorian chants from the 1500s, and in modern day, they’ve been linked to chakra points.”
Liana believes that the world is ready for this type of music. “Previously, it’s been seen as a bit ‘woo-woo,’ but now there are more and more studies coming out showing the benefits of certain types of music and sound frequencies to heal ourselves on a cellular level,” she said.
Liana’s music is a reflection of her personal journey, and it’s clear that she has poured her heart and soul into this album. “Anam Cara” is aligned with the heart chakra and is a track very close to her own heart. “The whole song is about that longing for love outside but then also finding love within, which I think is kind of the key to give ourselves self-love,” she said. “I love self-love, I’m really into it.”
Another single on the album is inspired by Taoist philosophy, which Liana studied during the lockdown.“I studied beneath a Zen Buddhist called Hung Tran, and an Ordained Taoist Monk called David from Wu Wei Wisdom. It really helped me with the immense grief I was carrying,” she said. “like many people during that time, I faced numerous challenges, which helped me connect more deeply with my own healing journey and with others going through similar experiences.
Inspired by Zen Buddhism, one of the album’s tracks is about recognising that you’re not the weather, but the actual thing experiencing the weather. “So you’re not the clouds, but you’re the sky; you’re not the waves, but you’re the ocean. Anytime I felt these big

emotions coming through, I was able to kind of observe myself, still experience it, but observe myself rather than get lost in it.”
This philosophy helped Liana navigate some of the most challenging experiences of her life. “It was just one thing after another— and then realising that for me and my own belief system, I’d signed up for these things and was able to experience them because I was strong enough and capable. Then, to be able to take the things that I’ve learned and offer them to people who are also going through those experiences, for me, is like the gold out of it.”
Liana’s journey has taken her far from her roots in Byron Bay, and she is currently in Cornwall. I was curious about how her mystical, Wiccan lifestyle might fit in with her new neighbours. “Being in Cornwall amongst different faiths and religions as introduced me to diverse perspectives, and I cherish the opportunity to learn from and connect with my new community,” she said.
What Liana has discovered is that, despite our differences, we all have the same fundamental desires: “We all want access to healthcare, education, food, community and to feel safe, with a roof over our heads. I feel like this is the thing to focus on and looking at how we can provide those solutions. And so I think that doing this, so much can be gained.”
She is a big believer in focusing on the good. “I think it’s really important to recognise the inequalities and the things that need to be solved, but I also think it’s good to focus on all the good stuff and believe in making what we deem impossible, possible”
Liana’s journey from actress to musician has been one of courage and determination. “People thought I was nuts when I wanted to record an album because I was an actor,” she admitted. “But just to be able to go and do it because you never know—there might only be one person who connects to it, but if it helps them blossom in their own way, that would be wonderful.”
Her message to others is clear: “I believe that many people have beautiful ideas waiting to be realised. I encourage you to pursue them, as the journey can be incredibly nourishing and rewarding. Take the leap because it just is the most nourishing process for me and for other people. So I think that’s probably the kind of thing that I feel most passionately about from this experience.”
As I wrapped up my interview with Liana, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of admiration for her journey. She has taken the pain and challenges of her life and transformed them into something beautiful—a gift of healing and connection through music. Rising is not just an album; it’s a testament to the power of self-love, resilience, and the healing power of art.
For those who listen to Liana Cornell’s music, it will undoubtedly be a journey—a journey through the chakras, through the frequencies that heal, and through the experiences that shape us. And in doing so, it may just inspire others to embark on their own journeys of healing and self-discovery.

Walking is a simple yet powerful exercise that offers numerous health benefits, from improving posture to boosting mental wellbeing. However, many of us may not realise that how we walk can significantly impact our overall health. Last year, a slip in a rainy car park made me rethink my own walking habits. This fall led me to discover the Alexander Technique, which highlighted the importance of posture and technique in walking.
Enter Joanna Hall, a renowned fitness coach and walking expert whose innovative WalkActive program is changing how we think about walking. With her guidance, I’ve learned some tips on how to improve my walking technique and discovered its profound impact on mental health and fitness. Whether you’re aiming to reach a daily step count or want to walk with better posture, Joanna’s insights offer a path to greater wellbeing.
Posture affects not only our physical health but also how we perceive the world. Poor walking habits, such as leaning forward and looking down, can lead to trips, slips, and even affect our mental wellbeing. When we walk with our heads down, we narrow our focus, which can increase anxiety and stress.
Joanna Hall’s WalkActive program
emphasises correct walking posture, which involves more than just putting one foot in front of the other. It’s about aligning the body properly to prevent injuries and enhance physical and mental health. Joanna advises walking with your head up, eyes forward, and utilising the full range of motion in your feet to improve circulation and reduce inflammation.
While the traditional advice of taking 10,000 steps a day has been widely promoted, recent research suggests that this target may be outdated. For most people, including those under 60 and over 60, aiming for 6,000 to 8,000 steps per day is a more achievable and beneficial goal. However, consistency, pace, and technique are key to reaping the full benefits of walking. Walking with good posture and a steady rhythm ensures that each step contributes positively to your overall health.
Walking with an elevated eye line not only improves your posture but also stimulates the brain’s active centre, enhancing mental clarity and reducing anxiety. Scientific studies have shown that moving through space creates “optic flow,” a phenomenon that lowers amygdala activity, which in turn reduces stress levels.
Using peripheral vision allows the brain to become more settled, helping you reclaim your sense of self and boost self-esteem. Joanna explains that when we lean forward and look down, it compresses the diaphragm, limiting its movement from the ideal 10cm to just 4-6cm. This restricted breathing can impact our mental wellbeing and how we perceive the world. By looking up and around, you improve both your physical and mental health.

The WalkActive method focuses on walking efficiency and proper posture. By engaging the posterior chain of muscles, including the glutes and hamstrings, you can improve your walking technique. This approach helps you “propel” rather than “pull” yourself forward, reducing strain on your knees and ankles.
The method also encourages active foot movement. Rather than letting your foot fall passively, imagine peeling it off the ground from heel to toe, which activates your glutes and sets up better alignment through your feet, knees, and hips.
1. Visualise Stability: “See Cups of Water”
Imagine balancing a cup of water on each hip as you walk. This visualisation helps stabilise your pelvis, ensuring your abdominals are engaged and your leg muscles are propelling you forward efficiently.
2. Focus on Arm Movement:
Increase your walking pace by swinging your arms faster, rather than speeding up your legs. This helps maintain rhythm and prevents misalignment. Not using your arms can lead to a stiff back, so keep them moving naturally.
3. Create Space in Your Stride:
Visualise a balloon between your hip socket and thigh bone. As you walk, pull your abdominals up and in to extend your leg fully before bending the knee. This lengthens your stride and reduces joint pressure.
Scientific research at South Bank University in London, led by Dr. Darren James, tested the WalkActive method’s effectiveness. The results were impressive, showing a 23% increase in walking speed and significant improvements in participants’ wellbeing.
• Improved Physical Activity: 100% of WalkActive participants increased their activity levels, compared to none in the control group.
• Enhanced Well-being: 96% reported better general wellbeing, with continued exercise beyond the study period.
• Weight and Body Composition: Participants experienced reductions in body mass (2%), estimated body fat (3%), and skinfold measurements (15%).
• Better Posture and Alignment: Participants walked taller, with improved skeletal alignment and reduced joint forces.
Pace Matters: Walking pace is a crucial factor that influences the effectiveness of your walking routine. Studies suggest that a walking pace starting at 100 beats per minute (bpm) is the minimum cadence needed to begin incurring physiological benefits. This pace helps elevate your heart rate, improving cardiovascular health, boosting metabolism, and enhancing calorie burn. Increasing your pace to 123 bpm constitutes a brisk walk, which further amplifies these benefits by strengthening the heart, improving circulation, and increasing endurance.
Why Pace Matters: A faster walking pace not only provides physical benefits but also has a positive impact on mental wellbeing. Walking briskly encourages deeper breathing, which increases oxygen flow to the brain and enhances cognitive function. Additionally, maintaining a steady, rhythmic pace helps reduce stress and improve
mood by releasing endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. Tools to Maintain Pace: The WalkActive app offers audio coaching to help you maintain an effective walking pace. This tool provides guidance on rhythm and technique, helping you keep your pace consistent and ensuring that you achieve the maximum health benefits from your walking routine. Whether you’re just starting or looking to improve your walking speed, the app can be a valuable resource for tracking progress and staying motivated.
While long nature walks can be rejuvenating, they may not always be feasible. Joanna Hall encourages starting closer to home with these simple steps:
1.Identify Key Locations:
Choose three places you frequent daily, such as your desk, office, or local store.
2. Plan Varied Routes:
Develop walking routes from these locations with different durations—5, 10, and 30 minutes. Having these options ready allows you to fit walking into your schedule easily.
Walking is more than just a physical activity; it’s a way to enhance your mental health and overall wellbeing. By adopting the WalkActive method and focusing on posture and technique, you can transform your walks into a powerful tool for health and happiness. Start your journey today by applying these tips and noticing the difference in how you feel and move.
Joanna Hall’s scientifically backed WalkActive program offers an accessible way to improve your walking efficiency, posture, and mental clarity. By making small changes, you can reap significant benefits for your body and mind.
