Q: Can you help clarify the differences between boys and girls in the ways that they bully? Is it still bullying if there is no physical violence?
A: As you might notice, often there are difference between boys’ and girls’ bullying.
When interviewed about the subject, Carrie
Goldman, the author of the book, Bullied: What Every Parent, Teacher and Kid Needs to Know About Ending the Cycle of Fear, explains that bullying comes about pretty equally between the genders, but it happens in different ways. Girls tend to do more of the “mean girl” syndrome. The bullying is more underhanded and veiled. There is taunting and verbal abuse. There are more rumors and exclusion. On the other hand, with boys, you see more of the physical bullying: hitting and using physical aggression to intimidate.
According to bullying
Directorresearcher Dan Olweus, bullying is characterized by three factors whether the bully and victim are male or female:
• It is repetitive (not a onetime event in the hall, but a regular ongoing problem).
• It is unwanted (not twoway teasing where both parties are having fun, but instead a situation where someone is on the receiving end of taunts and aggression).
• It takes place in the context of a power imbalance (a bigger kid against a smaller kid, or multiple kids against a single kid, or a kid with more social capital against a kid with less social capital).

Recap of Chapter 71
Martin receives instructions from Skulholt to fly from Newark to Charleston, South Carolina. The security officer at Newark warns Martin about the dangers of Skulholt’s medical center. Rob picks up Martin-Yosef from the airport and drives him to the medical center. Martin does his best to impersonate Yosef all the while.
Mali tells Hinda she’ll come for Shabbos if Yosef is away.
CHAPTER SEVENTY TWO
“So,” Mali said, “until when can I let you know if I’m coming, Ima?”
“I think we’d like to know by Thursday, so we can get organized early enough on Friday to come and get you from Tzefas.”
“Fine,” her daughter said. “I’ll try to let you know as soon as I can.”
“Great, sweetie,” Hinda said, and when the conversation ended, she tried to remember when the two of them had last ended a conversation on such a positive note. And when their last phone conversation had been, in the first place. They had certainly spoken to each other around Yom Tov time, but what about since then?
She hadn’t spoken to Mali for a long time. And when had she last spoken to Baruch?
And Avigdor?
It wasn’t nice to admit it, but she seemed to call Avigdor only when she needed his help with Yosef, though of course they also spoke weekly when he called her. But why was it only once a week? He was probably taking pains not to disturb the new couple. And Baruch…she spoke to Baruch only when he called from a public phone, because trying to reach him in yeshivah was always complicated. Their conversations were usually fine, just few and far in between. She spoke to Chani more often, but with Avigdor’s wife Esty, for example… True, last week she’d
asked to speak to Esty, to see how she was doing, but Avigdor’s wife was always a bit quiet, distant and always very busy. And she, Hinda, was also busy, and also didn’t have time—and the children had long known that.
Hinda kicked at the little mound of earth on the ground. The swing moved gently forward and backward, and she leaned against the back of it and closed her eyes. There was quiet in and around the bungalow, as Dov and Yosef slept deeply, and the night air was still and silent.
Her children were also busy with themselves and their lives, and it was all fine. But she was the mother.
Had she neglected them in an attempt to keep up with the pace of her new life?
Not that she was blaming herself; she didn’t have any spare energy for that now, and that was even before the fact that a court martial for mothers’ guilt was usually not a fair trial. But that didn’t mean she couldn’t rethink things a bit.
She had been rather self-absorbed lately, and that was only natural. Just like it was natural for her to have withdrawn into herself after Shmuel’s passing. But then, she’d been young and really selfish, and with all of the hurt and petty anger she’d built up against Michoel for speaking to her as he did—he was the one who had pulled her out of that place.
Now it was happening again, when she was older and more mature, when she already knew how to give of herself to others. True, Dov was now in first place, and his children also took up a significant part of her, not to mention Yosef, who also knew how to take up a large share of his mother. But to be honest, there was enough of her left to give to her other children.
Hinda didn’t suddenly call Esty and Avigdor, Baruch, or Chani. No, she wasn’t impulsive. She also wouldn’t hurry to organize a big family Shabbos this week, and not only due to the fact that this bungalow didn’t have enough room for them all. Perhaps she wouldn’t even organize such a Shabbos next week in her own house, in Haifa. After all, her children were adults, and they
were settled and managing beautifully, baruch Hashem. They knew they had a loving mother even when she was busy, and it wasn’t like she’d thrown them into the desert, hungry and in rags, just okay enough to survive.
Her swinging became a bit more vigorous, and her feet lifted from the floor as she gazed at the small patches of grass around her. She’d always been that type of mother—she didn’t hover around her children or chase after them—but she was a very good mother. She listened, empathized, and did all the things she was supposed to, and she thought her children always felt loved and safe in her company. They knew she had their backs, and that if they ever wanted her advice, she was more than happy to give it to them. Mali had never wanted her advice, even when she was little. Mali had always been a little different than the others; perhaps she was the first one who looked for something different, or who wanted her mother to look for something different for her.
Hinda closed her eyes. It was good, to come to a point in life where you can look into yourself and find your weak points. The question was what to do with the weakness she had found. She couldn’t change her personality, and she wasn’t sure she wanted to, but she could always improve.
One of the sprinklers in the small garden suddenly switched on, and cold drops of water spattered onto Hinda’s forehead. She didn’t bother to wipe them away; the cool wetness was pleasant. So, she wasn’t supposed to start chasing after her daughter-in-law, but a phone call to her once a week, to compliment Esty on some of the grandchildren’s cute remarks that Avigdor had shared with her, could be a great thing. She had to ask Baruch to call more often, and Avigdor also had to realize that he interested his mother, not only when she needed his help with Yosef. It made no difference that she was busy and preoccupied and didn’t always have the headspace to deal with regular, mundane matters.
Hinda moved a bit to the right as the spray from the sprinkler grew stronger. Mali… Hinda had stopped calling her when Mali had stopped, almost consistently, picking up the phone. But recently, their relationship was thawing a bit, and she could try again to generate some friendly mother-daughter conversations. She’d been able to break the ice with Dov’s daughter Penina pretty fast, even though the beginning hadn’t been easy. There was no reason why her own daughter should remain so distant. Hinda stopped the swing and stood up. The sprinkler stopped together with the swing, as if they were synchronized. It was time to go to sleep, especially since the thoughts about change were beginning to slowly take on the voice of her conscience. It was good, that thing called conscience, but caring people needed to remember to limit it sometimes.
Dr. Jerry Skulholt had soft green eyes and pronounced cheekbones. The contrast was interesting, and Martin spent a long moment studying him before returning a limp handshake.
“Pleasure to meet you…” he murmured, as his eyes darted every which way.
“You’re probably tired from all that traveling,” the psychiatrist said, smiling amiably. “And I imagine that you would also
like to see your uncle, Mr. Perl, already. So we won’t let this introductory meeting last too long, alright?” He asked for Yosef’s passport and the translated documents, and studied them in silence for a few moments before setting the whole batch down on the table.
“Can I see your pills, Josef?”
Martin opened his suitcase slowly and took out three different pill bottles. Hinda and Dov had promised that they would get Yosef other pills, because he, Martin, needed to take these with him; otherwise, his whole show would have too many holes. The psychiatrist took the containers, turned them from side to side, peeked inside, and counted how many pills there were of each type.
“Okay, so for the first two days, you’ll continue taking everything as usual,” he said, pushing the bottles back to the youth. “Then we’ll talk. Are you happy to have come here, Josef?”
Martin-Josef nodded vigorously.
“Why?”
“Because I want to be well.”
“Who told you about this place?”
“My mother. Michoel told her.”
“And what did he say? That he is healthy?”
“Not completely, but mostly.” Martin looked only at the table and not at the face of the doctor.
“You need to cooperate with us in order to get well.” The psychiatrist’s eyes lost some of their softness for a moment.
“You need to trust us, Josef, and to obey our instructions, in order to be well. Okay?”
“Okay. Sure. Which instructions?”
“Slowly you’ll learn everything. But let’s start with the basics. You came with a phone, right?”
“Yes.” Martin took the device out of his pocket.
“Excellent. Call your mother and tell her you arrived safely, and that next time, you’re going to call from the office, because we don’t use personal phones here.”
“Oh.” He nodded.
“Aside for that, do you have a mirror among your belongings?”
“No.”
“Not even something small, in a toiletries bag or something? Behind a hairbrush? Next to the toothpaste?”
“No.”
“Photo albums of any kind?”
“No.”
“Good. We don’t allow those things here. Those are the basic instructions. Tomorrow at ten, you’ll come here again, for your first private session. Then we’ll have a two-hour group session.”
“What do you do there?”
The man smiled, making his cheekbones stand out even more. “Interesting things. For now, though, call home, to your mother. Then give me your phone for safekeeping, and you can finally go visit your uncle.” TO
“Hi Mommy, I just called to say good night before it gets too late,” my daughter Tilly said over the phone line. I could hear the lilt in her voice that told me everything I needed to know about her day.
My stomach twisted.
“Thanks for remembering to call, sweetie,” I said cautiously. “How was your day today?”
“Awesome!” Tilly declared. “Uncle Shlomo has off on Sunday, you know, so he drove us into town and we ate lunch there, plus we took the kids down to the lake to feed the ducks. It was so much fun!”
“That’s great,” I said in as enthusiastic a tone I could muster, while the churning of my stomach turned to very real nausea. I wanted to be happy that my daughter was enjoying herself. She really deserved it. But I was too worried about what that enjoyment was doing to her.
“So are you headed to bed now?” I asked, looking at the clock. It was after eleven, and I knew Tilly usually turned in early, so I figured that was a safe assumption. But not in Shlomo and Nechy’s home, apparently.
“Nah,” Tilly laughed. “Night is the time to be up! All day the twins are up, but by seven thirty they’re sleeping, and that’s when our time starts. There’s a really nice crowd here, and everyone schmoozes outside till really late. Nechy just takes along a monitor, and we’re good to go.”
“Sounds like so much fun,” I said.
“Yeah, Nechy’s the best. Sometimes, if any of us don’t have patience to be with the whole crowd, we stay inside and do an exercise video or something like that. And the ladies here have night activity, like they bring down speakers or stuff. A lot of times it’s about parenting and stuff like that, but I find it interesting anyway.”
At this point, I ran out of platitudes and I just made a noncommittal sound.
“Anyway, good night, Mommy. I’m going to go see what Nechy’s plans are for tonight, kay?”
“Okay, darling. Enjoy yourself,” I bit back the other words that were trying to get through my teeth, words like “don’t forget to be responsible,” and “make your mother proud.” I couldn’t say any of that.
“Have a great night, Tilly. Love you.”
“Love you too Mommy. Thanks for sending me here. It was the best idea ever.”
Her last words nearly got lost in a disconnecting beep, but I managed to catch them.
No, Tilly, this was not the best idea ever. How can I make you see why?
I hung up the phone, but I was too restless to go to sleep as I’d planned. Instead, I reached for a cookbook and started sifting ingredients together. When I need to think, I bake. ***
I had also thought that it would be the best idea ever to send Tilly to my sister Nechy for one half of the summer. In fact, I’d jumped at the idea when Nechy offered.
Tilly was fifteen, but she had no interest in going to camp. She’d tried it the first year and was so terribly homesick that she didn’t last through the season. Since then, camp was a taboo subject for her. All her friends might love it, but it wasn’t even in Toby’s dictionary. Secretly, I didn’t mind as much as I sometimes thought I should, because saving the money on the camp expense was definitely appreciated. So while I tried to convince Tilly to try again, I might not have been quite as persuasive as possible.
I was fine with Tilly staying home and working in a local day camp with her friends. Actually, I thought that being a counselor was great work experience, and Tilly got together with her friends every day after day camp. Who said you needed to go to camp anyway?
But then this year there was a snag in Tilly’s
summer plans. Somehow, all her friends were going to camp first half, leaving Tilly without anyone to work with back home. One friend who’d stayed home first half other years was going to Eretz Yisrael with her family this year, and as hard as Tilly tried, she couldn’t think of anyone else she might want to work with who was staying home.
“Tilly, maybe you should just go to camp with all your friends, then,” I suggested tentatively at yet another late-night session of angst where Tilly tried to figure out her summer plans. “It’s been a while since seventh grade.”
“No, absolutely not,” Tilly shook her head resolutely, and her anguished expression made me feel sorry for having mentioned it. Tilly wouldn’t be budged on that point anyway.
We briefly considered sending Tilly to Eretz Yisrael, but she didn’t feel close enough to my sister who lived there to actually stay there for a month. She’d be just as homesick as she was in camp, she said. Then Tilly came up with the idea to open her own playgroup aged day camp, but she had no one to do it with. I didn’t want her to take on the responsibility all on her own.
That’s why Nechy’s phone call had seemed like a no-brainer.
“Hi, Sarale,” Nechy had said in her breezy way. Nechy’s my youngest sister and we’re fifteen years apart, but we’re still as close as sisters get.
“You up for an idea I just had? You know what a handful my twins can be,” she said, and I did know. She had twin girls, a little over a year old. Nechy no longer had a nurse helping her out, and taking care of two babies on her own kept her very busy.
“And they’re begging Shlomo to come back to River View to run the day camp again. He’s an amazing head counselor, you know, and they just couldn’t find anyone to replace him. That’s what they claim. Anyway, I really wasn’t planning to go back with the twins, after missing it last year. I can’t imagine being in the mountains with them and all the rest of the crew, it’s such a schlep. But Shlomo wants to take the job back, even though it means he’ll be in River View all week and only come back to Green Point to be with us on Shabbos.”
Nechy was rambling, but I didn’t stop her. I knew she’d eventually get to the point.
“So I was wondering, I know this is like totally a random idea, but I know Tilly loves my girls

and my girls love Tilly so much – she isn’t by any chance planning to go to camp this year, is she?”
“No, she isn’t,” I said, and I instantly realized what Nechy’s idea was. I laughed.
“What?” Nechy said.
“You wanted to ask me if Tilly could come up with you and be your mother’s helper?” I clarified to make sure.
“Yes, exactly!” Nechy said with delight. “That’s exactly what I wanted to ask! Would you let her? Do you think she would be interested? I’m really going to need the company when Shlomo’s away.”
“Yes, and yes, I think,” I responded. “Nechy, I think you’ve got the perfect magic solution! Obviously, I still have to discuss it with Yehoshua and with Tilly, but it sounds like a dream. You get help, Tilly’s entertained, and I doubt she’ll get homesick with her favorite aunt for company.”
“Ooh, yay!” Nechy said. “I’m so excited you like my idea! I’ll make sure to make it fun for her, don’t worry.”
“I wasn’t worried about it,” I said, because I knew what Nechy was like. Tilly loved going to help her out with the twins, so much so that I sometimes complained that she liked Nechy’s house better than our house. “And anyway, the amazing thing is that she can always come home for a Shabbos or a few days if she’s homesick. That’s besides the fact that she can call home as often as she wants.”
“So will you tell her?” Nechy asked eagerly. I promised that I would, as soon as possible. Tilly got just as fired up about the idea as Nechy was, so I hardly noticed that Yehoshua didn’t join us all in being thrilled.
“Well, I think we would need to make sure that they’re going to supervise her very carefully,” Yehoshua said in his deliberate way. “In camp, we know that she’s under supervision, but here, they might just let her do what she wants, because she’ll seem like an adult to them. But she isn’t an adult, she’s a teenager, and we need to remember that.”
“What type of supervision do you have in mind? Like a sleep curfew?” I asked naively.
“Yes, and I would think what other rules to have in mind.”
“I think we can trust Nechy to enforce our rules,” I said confidently. “Tilly’s so excited to go, I really
think it’s not an opportunity to pass up.”
“Okay,” Yehoshua acquiesced. “Like I said, as long as the rules are enforced.” ***
That’s how I rushed blindly, headlong into the situation we were now dealing with.
I’d never stopped to think that my home and Nechy’s were pretty different. Sure, I knew that our personalities were as different as the opposite ends of the rainbow, but that didn’t stop us from hainvg a close relationship. Nechy was adventurous while I was staid, but we shared a similar outlook on life. I knew I could trust Nechy’s standards of Yiddishkeit. But I hadn’t taken into account the people that she was friendly with.
Both Nechy and her husband Shlomo had a lot of friends of all different types. But it so happened to be that she spent her summers with the young working guys crowd. They were adventurous and looking to have the time of their lives, and they had the means to make it happen.
Tilly had grown up with a father in chinuch. My husband Yehoshua held himself to a certain higher standard, just because of his standing in the community. It influenced our lifestyle very much, both because of these standards as well as because of finances.
Now, I discovered almost immediately after sending Tilly up to the mountains with my sister, she was being exposed to a very different lifestyle.
“You should have seen the barbecue they made last night!” Tilly reported to me breathlessly after her first Motzaei Shabbos in the mountains. “They brought down a singer, and there was a whole concert. They served steak and fancy meats for a Melava Malka! I always thought Melava Malka is milchig, but Nechy claims these guys never do milchig.” Tilly laughed.
That was my first inkling that there was more under the surface than I’d thought about.
The crowd Nechy was with sent to the same or similar schools as me, attended the same shuls and even had many of the same standards in dress and other parts of Yiddishkeit. But they thought nothing of enjoying an all-out fress fest barbecue and concert. In our home, Tilly had never seen anything like it.
The innuendos kept coming. Tilly was learning
about all the different brand names it was important to keep up with. Tilly now knew all about car models and their prices. Tilly was being wined and dined in various restaurants every time my sister and her husband drove to town. Nechy’s carefree attitude to life seemed refreshing and tantalizing to my daughter, as I heard from the comments she made. I cringed thinking about how drab and boring my home must seem to Tilly now.
There was a certain higher standard that Yehoshua kept because he was in chinuch. It didn’t mean he felt that everyone had to keep to it, but he definitely wanted his own daughter to keep to his ideals.
And that’s why he was pressuring me to bring Tilly home.
“Tilly’s in head over heels,” Yehoshua said, shaking his head. “She’s enjoying every minute of it. At least she still remembers to ask my permission sometimes.”
“What was it this time?” I asked warily, squirming inside.
It wasn’t anything wrong, because these were fine people. But it wasn’t anything I was so excited about either.
“Maybe we can come up with an excuse for why you need her home,” Yehoshua said. “You really could use her help, no? You’re still working fulltime.”
“Yes, but I knew that before I sent her,” I said. “Nechy will know right away why I’m calling her home. I told her I can manage without her, and I really am managing. She’s going to feel hurt.” Yehoshua looked at me. I shrugged, feeling helpless. “I can’t tell Nechy to tone it down. This is her. She doesn’t think there’s anything wrong with it.”
“So make it clear that you also don’t think there’s anything wrong, but you just don’t want Tilly exposed to all this,” Yehoshua said.
I didn’t know what to say.
“I can’t do it to my sister,” I finally repeated.
“She’ll feel so bad.”
That was the end of the discussion then, but I knew there would be more discussions on the topic.
Each time, though, it ended the same way, with me insisting that I couldn’t do it to my sister. Would the impressions from this summer really shape Tilly’s outlook on life?
Was I sacrificing my daughter’s upbringing for my sister’s feelings? ***
If you’re wondering, I did manage to bring Tilly home, just a few days early, to make Yehoshua happy. The excuse I came up with left Nechy mystified, though it was short enough that she didn’t feel hurt, especially when Tilly thanked her over and over again for giving her the summer of her life.
Tilly came home glowing, and really, I was happy that my daughter had enjoyed such a wonderful vacation. Meanwhile, I wracked my brain trying to think how I could discuss the disparity of the two lifestyles with Tilly.
But she beat me to it.
It was after the seudah on the first Friday night she was home, and the two of us had finished cleaning up and were now curled up on the couch.
“Tatty sings really nice zemiros,” Tilly remarked idly as she flipped the pages of a book. “Shlomo was usually sleeping by the time the soup came.”
My heart lurched. Here it came, the comparisons between the two households she’d lived in.
“Did you enjoy being back home?”
Tilly nodded emphatically. “I love Tatty’s seudos,” she said thoughtfully. “It was nice and all by Nechy, but there’s something special about being home.”
I held my breath, hoping she would go on.
“Nechy and everyone there are a lot of fun,” Tilly said. “That’s why it was such a nice vacation for me. But I don’t know…Nechy needs the fun. It’s part of her. I don’t think that that type of fun is part of me. I think that Tatty’s seudos and zemiros are much more part of me.” She shrugged and smiled. “I can’t imagine being part of that kind of group when I’m married.”
I wanted to let out my breath in a whoosh, but instead I exhaled quietly in relief.
I definitely wouldn’t have taken the gamble had I known this is what Tilly’s summer would look like. But I was gratified to know that she had internalized my values enough to withstand the allure of another type of life. •

With summer vacation winding down, here are 2 simple ways of enjoying a gourmet meal while you’re away, both with minimal prep and conveniently cooked on a Betty Crocker.
Yield: 2 servings
4 chicken cutlets (1 lb), not thin
1 ½ lb medium red potatoes, halved (5-6 potatoes)
Fresh string beans, ends trimmed
Marinade:
½ cup oil
2 Tbsp dijon mustard
2 Tbsp lemon juice
2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
4 tsp parsley flakes
4 tsp garlic powder
2 tsp onion powder
1 tsp table salt
½ tsp freshly ground black pepper
1. Combine all marinade ingredients in a small bowl.
2. Place chicken in a Ziploc bag along with half the marinade and let it sit for at least ½ hour, preferably longer.
3. Toss the potatoes with the remaining marinade.
4. Place the potatoes, cut side down, on one side of the Betty Crocker (leaving space for the chicken and string beans). Cover and cook for 20 minutes, flipping halfway through.
5. Add chicken and string beans to the Betty Crocker. Cook for 6-8 minutes, flipping halfway through.
6. Uncover the Betty and cook for another 2 minutes.
Yield: 2 servings
2 Tbsp oil
½ tsp salt
½ tsp onion powder
½ tsp paprika
2 lg potatoes, scrubbed and cut into fries
2 rib steaks, 1” thick
Coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper
Frozen broccoli
1. Place oil and spices in the (unlined) Betty Crocker. Add the fries and toss to coat. Cover and cook 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through.
2. While fries cook, season both sides of the steaks with a generous amount of coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper.
3. Remove fries from the Betty Crocker and add the rib steaks and broccoli. (There is no need to wash the Betty in between.)
3. Cover and cook for 5 minutes, flipping the steaks halfway through.
4. Unplug the Betty Crocker and remove the steaks. If the broccoli is not easily pierced with a fork at this point, close the cover and let it steam for another 5 minutes while unplugged.
This week's planned recipe was light, fresh, and summery. Sitting in a sweatshirt and blanket, I checked the weather for the week, and while I want to hold on to summer (forever), I figured that a hot and cold salad would be a great match to the temperatures.
Clip it for later, because a salad with warm, cooked ingredients always makes for a more satisfying dish (Due to heightened taste receptor capabilities and more complex digestive properties.)
INGREDIENTS:
◆ 1 quart cooked (al dente) pasta of your choice
◆ 1 quart checked kale, spinach, or arugula
◆ 3 cups cherry tomatoes on the vine (or catch the last of the tiny heirloom tomato season!)
◆ 1/3 of a lemon, the peels scrubbed, not removed
◆ 8 ounces (1 package) goat cheese (or feta, ifyou prefer)
◆ 3/4 cup parmesan cheese
◆ 4 tablespoons olive oil
◆ Salt and pepper
◆ FORK + BOWL GARDEN FRESH HERB DRESSING
DIRECTIONS:
1 Measurements are for the pasta once it's cooked. Don't rinse it with cold water;just let it drain, pouring 2 tablespoons of olive oil into the colander and mixing it, so that the pasta doesn't stick together.
2 Slice your lemon paper thin. A mandoline is a great idea here.
3 On a baking sheet, spread the lemon slices and whole tomatoes. Pour olive oil, salt and pepper, and roast at 375 for 15 minutes. The tomatoes should soften, and start turning brown. The lemons should caramelize.
4 Flip the lemons, and bake for another 10 minutes, leaving the tomatoes exactly as they were.
5 Once removed, chop the lemon slices into 1/4 inch pieces.
6 Keeping the pasta, tomatoes, and lemons warm, the salad greens and parmesan cheese cold, toss it all together with the FORK + BOWL - GARDEN FRESH HERB DRESSING
7 Break the goat cheese into small pieces and place them on each serving individually.
BTW: ◆ I prefer spaghetti for mouth feel. ◆ This recipe is great when food is requested around the clock, between camp and school. The younger ones will enjoy"lokshon" in whatever form, while the teens and adults get a round meal. ◆ For ease, cook a big pot of pasta, and just microwave with a bit of oil before mixing with the rest of the salad components. ◆ This salad is delicious without the cheese as well, if you prefer to keep it parve.
◆ The Garden Fresh Herb Dressing is made with fresh, checked herbs, squeezed and zested (by hand!) lemons, and as such,WILL settle. As much as it ruins the aesthetic, the ingredients coming apart is a sign of no preservatives. Just shake well toget the full effect of all flavors.
Full line of dressings, made from scratch, kept as close to nature as possible, no sugar added, ever. Available in kosher supermarkets all over the "Jewish metro New York" area.

AWhen one is diabetic, he needs to follow a diet specifically for diabetics and be careful with his sugar intake. However, you asked about gut-friendly foods. So here goes!
Known as the microbiome, your gut is home to millions of bacteria and other microbes—both good and bad—and can influence your health in many ways. The key is to balance the ratio of good to bad bacteria within the gut microbiome. According to a 2019 review published in a medical journal, the "right balance" is different for everyone, as each person has their own personal microbiome profile that is initially influenced by several factors such as your birth story, and if you were fed formula as a newborn. What you eat, directly influences the makeup of bacteria in your gut. A healthy gut helps keep chronic diseases like heart disease and illness at bay, reduces inflammation, keeps your brain healthy and helps you maintain a healthy weight.
It's never too late to change your diet to support better gut bacteria. So how do you improve your own microbiome?
In a nutshell: Eat more: Probiotics, prebiotics, fiber, polyphenols and fermented foods and eat less artificial sweeteners, red meat, processed foods and alcohol.
Probiotics are the beneficial bacteria that live in your gut and can be found in fermented foods like sauerkraut, and yogurt. Eating foods that are naturally rich in probiotics adds good bacteria to your gut. The most common types of good bacteria are Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, with each having its own specific strains. In addition to helping balance your gut bacteria and prevent chronic disease, probiotics can help if you have diarrhea, boost your immunity and keep your heart and skin healthy. Here are some examples of foods that have probiotics in them. Try to incorporate some of them.
Yogurt- Yogurt is probably the most popular probiotic and for good reason. It's made when good bacteria are added to milk, where they metabolize lactose to form lactic acid and other beneficial microbes. Look for yogurt labeled with the "Live & Active Cultures" seal, which guarantees 100 million
probiotic cultures per gram at the time it was manufactured. A quick look at the ingredients list will also show you if there are bacteria in the yogurt. Be careful though. Some yogurts contain loads of sugar that may in turn do more harm than good here.
Kefir- Kefir is like drinkable yogurt. It's made when kefir grains, which are colonies of yeast and lactic acid bacteria, ferment the sugars in milk, giving it a slightly thicker consistency and tart flavor. Similar to yogurt, kefir is packed with probiotics, as long as the store-bought brand you buy uses milk that is pasteurized prior to the fermentation process. Pasteurization before fermentation ensures kefir contains live and active probiotics when you consume it. Buy plain kefir (instead of flavored) to skip added sugars or make your own kefir.
Sauerkraut- Sauerkraut is made from cabbage and salt. During the fermentation process, microorganisms eat the sugar present in cabbage and produce carbon dioxide and acids. The probiotics created during fermentation assist with digestion and add good bacteria to your gut. Try to make your own sauerkraut. Most store-bought sauerkraut is pasteurized, which kills bad bacteria as well as the beneficial bacteria created through fermentation. One cup of sauerkraut has 4 grams of fiber, per the USDA. Probiotics in the gut use fiber as fuel. Enjoy sauerkraut with grilled chicken, substitute it for pickles on a sandwich, add it to potato salad.
Leeks- According to the USDA, 1 cup of leeks has 1.6 grams of fiber and just 54 calories. Leeks can be added to almost any dish—try adding them to an omelet or sautéing them to mix with roasted potatoes. Alternatively, rub whole leeks with oil and grill briefly; then toss with your favorite vinaigrette.
Onions are chock-full of prebiotics! Onions are highly versatile: Add to soup or salad or to any food.
Jerusalem Artichokes- One cup of Jerusalem artichokes delivers 2.4g of fiber. Try sunchokes roasted with olive oil and garlic or raw in salads (they have a texture similar to water chestnuts).
Beans and legumes- Many steer clear of beans for fear of having gas pain, but this is actually a good sign that your gut bacteria are hard at work. When the fiber in beans and legumes, such as black beans, chickpeas, peas, lentils and white beans, reaches the large intestine (colon), it's still intact. It's there that gut bacteria feed on them. This process is called fermentation. And the byproduct may be some gas pain.
Pears- Pears are a prebiotic food for the gut and also contain pectin, a compound that helps lower cholesterol. One medium pear is just 100 calories but has 5.5 g of fiber, according to the USDA.
Green bananas-the unripe ones are best for the gut because they contain resistant starch, a type of indigestible fiber that produces more beneficial bacteria when your microbes feed on it. Bonus: Ripe bananas are full of fiber too, which helps keep you fuller longer. There are certain foods that are to be eliminated if you are trying to improve your gut health. Here are a few:
1. Processed and Refined FoodsProcessed and refined foods lack diversity and fiber and are often filled with added sugars, salt, artificial sweeteners and/or additives and preservatives. Your microbiome thrives on the diverse fibers and polyphenols that come from eating a variety of colorful fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
2. Artificial Sweeteners- Artificial sweeteners, such as aspartame, saccharin and sucralose, have zero calories and no sugar. They pass through the body without being digested, yet they come into contact with the microflora in the gut, negatively changing the composition. These sweeteners can be found in diet soda and other zero-calorie drinks, as well as in yogurts and “healthy” protein and granola bars.
3. Red Meat- Red meat has a compound that negatively interacts with gut bacteria. Eat red meat in moderation, and choose fatty fish, white fish, chicken or plant-based proteins.
I hope this will help you out!

Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan 5784/October 15, 2023, will be a date that will go down in history as a day that transformed Klal Yisroel. It is the day when the new Amud HaYomi will begin Masechta Brachos. One hundred years ago, this month, Daf HaYomi was established and changed Klal Yisroel. The new Amud HaYomi will almost certainly have a similar impact.
When the senior members of Dirshu’s hanhalla led by its Nasi, Rav Dovid Hofstedter, shlita, told HaGaon HaRav Berel Povarsky, shlita, senior Rosh Yeshiva of the Ponovezh Yeshiva, about the idea at his home in Bnei Brak, the smile that wreathed his face from ear to ear said it more than anything else. “Moredig, gevaldig, gevaldig!” he exclaimed. “An excellent idea! Amud HaYomi is something that each person can learn in accordance with his own level of learning.”
HaGaon HaRav Yitzchok Sorotzkin, shlita, Rosh Yeshiva of the Mesivta of Lakewood, greeted the news with great simcha. He said, “HaGaon HaRav Moshe Shmuel Shapiro, zt”l, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Be’er Yaakov, would often bemoan the fact that avreichim do not have a wide ranging bekius in Shas. He would advise avreichim to take time during bein hasedarim or night seder to learn an amud yomi. My father, Rav Boruch Sorotzkin, zt”l, also had an amud yomi seder every afternoon. I think it is a wonderful idea and will meet a need for those who find that an amud yomi works better for them. It is a wonderful idea whose time has come!”
HaGaon HaRav Shlomo Feivel Schustal, shlita, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Tiferes Yerachmiel in Lakewood, displayed great simcha when he heard about the new Amud HaYomi program. His primary joy was aroused by the realization that this program would increase limud haTorah and the numbers of lomdei Torah.
“The Torah needs yodei Torah, people who don’t just learn Torah but understand and know what they learned.’ I think therefore that the Torah is makir tov to you. The Torah wants people to be busy with learning Torah, to encourage limud haTorah. I think that, without a doubt, you Rav Hofstedter and Dirshu are shelucha d’rachmana, emissaries of Hashem to ensure that the Torah always has customers…”
Why Amud HaYomi?
Why Amud HaYomi? Isn’t there already Daf HaYomi? The answer is twofold. Firstly, Amud
HaYomi and Daf HaYomi are not mutually exclusive. On the contrary, in many ways Amud HaYomi complements the Daf HaYomi. The Daf HaYomi is now approaching the milestone of completing half of Shas. Many lomdei Daf HaYomi would benefit from a daily chazarah of what they have learned thus far. Amud HaYomi will enable Daf HaYomi leaners to incorporate an amud of chazarah into their daily schedules thereby affording them a better retention of Shas, locking it in, in a much more comprehensive way. Thus, as they continue learning the Daf HaYomi they will not neglect chazarah on what they learned previously.
In addition, there are many people who cannot learn the Daf HaYomi. For some the pace is too quick, for others it is too much information to absorb at once. Yet others like to have a bit more time to look at meforshim.
For this reason, the Amud HaYomi can become a true gamechanger both for those that are already learning the Daf HaYomi, and for those whom Daf HaYomi does not work.
The official launch of the Amud HaYomi will take place motzoei Shabbos Bereishis, at the historic Sofiensäle Hall in Vienna, the same concert hall where, during the month of Elul one-hundred years ago the groundbreaking, world-changing concept of the Daf HaYomi was proposed at the first Knessiah Gedolah. The launch will be held in conjunction with a siyum on seder Nashim and half of Shas in the Daf HaYomi machzor and will be graced by leading Gedolei Yisrael from America, Eretz Yisrael and Europe.
HaGaon HaRav Hillel David, shlita, Yoshev Rosh of the Vaad Roshei Yeshiva of Torah Umesorah, a member of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah, and Rav of Kehillas Yeshiva Shaarei Torah, will lead the delegation of Rabbanim coming from America. The very distinguished delegation of Gedolei Yisrael from Eretz Yisrael who will be participating in the historic launch will include HaGaon HaRav Dovid Cohen, shlita, Rosh Yeshivas Chevron; HaGaon HaRav Yaakov Meir Stern, shlita, talmid muvhak of Hagaon HaRav Shmuel Wosner and one of Eretz Yisrael’s leading poskim and dayanim; HaGaon HaRav Shimon Galei, shlita and HaGaon HaRav Chaim Peretz Berman, shlita, a Rosh Yeshiva at the Ponevezh Yeshiva. The European delegation will be led by HaGaon HaRav Gavriel Knopfler, shlita, Rosh
Yeshiva of Yeshiva Shaarei Torah of Manchester. The group of Roshei Yeshiva and Rabbanim is still in formation and numerous others will be joining. One hundred years ago, the Daf HaYomi completely changed Klal Yisrael. It was instrumental in making limud haTorah a central part of the day for hundreds of thousands of Yidden the world over. Now, one hundred years later, the new Amud HaYomi, with the same relentless, seven day a week schedule, 354 days a year, promises to have a transformative impact on the limud haTorah of Klal Yisrael.
The new Amud HaYomi machzor will begin daf beis amud aleph in Masechta Brachos on the first day of Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan, October 15, 2023.
There will be four tracks. A track of Gemara with Rashi, another with Gemara, Rashi and Tosafos and within those two tracks there will be two separate tracks.
Dirshu will also be publishing a remarkable kuntress called Iyun Ha’Amud compiled by phenomenal talmidei chachomim. The kuntress will be distributed among the lomdim of the Amud Hayomi throughout the world. The kuntress is intended to assist the lomdim of Amud HaYomi with their learning and it includes the pages of the Gemara, explanations and supplements, marei mekomos and practical applications of the halachah.
Lomdei Amud HaYomi will be able to take monthly tests on one of any of the four tracks and be rewarded handsome stipends for excellent results.
Track 1 of the Gemara with Rashi will consist of tests on just Gemara and Rashi. In Track 3 of the Gemara with Rashi, the lomdim will learn and be tested on Gemara, Rashi and the kuntress Iyun Ha’Amud.
The Gemara with Rashi and Tosafos, Track 2, will feature learning and testing of just Gemara, Rashi and Tosafos while Track 4 will feature testing on Gemara, Rashi, Tosafos and kuntress Iyun Ha’amud. Every test in Tracks 2 and 4 will feature 23 questions on the Gemara, Rashi/Tosafos and seven questions on Iyun Ha’amud.
Since last week’s unveiling of the new program, an avid interest has been aroused among lomdei Torah. There is no location more appropriate to launch the new program as the same venue where the original Daf HaYomi was launched 100 years ago! Indeed, Amud HaYomi, promises to be a program that will, bez”H, enrich the limud haTorah of untold numbers of Yidden in the next 100 years and beyond.
If you want to learn Shas methodically and clearly, with a plan, in a way that you can truly acquire what you learn; if you want to join with klal Yisrael in an exciting new venture through Shas; if you have already learned with Daf HaYomi and are seeking a structured daily chazarah of an amud per day… then this program is tailormade for you!

The life of R 'Zusha M'Anepoli was very challenging. He was very ill and poor, and he had a lot of Tzaros each day. One of his Talmidim once questioned him about how he manages to express daily gratitude to Hashem and Daven in the face of such difficulty.
Hashem only considers the best interests of every individual, R 'Zusha answered. If Hashem is causing him these problems, then all of these Tzaros are actually good, and he should be appreciative of that.
