ESTHER RAPAPORT

NINE A.M. IS A COMPLETELY FICTIONAL STORY WHICH TAKES PLACE FIFTY YEARS AFTER THE HOLOCAUST.

RECAP OF CHAPTER 84: At Leo’s funeral, his nephew Sol pompously acts as if he will be taking over Leo’s position, to David Elkovitz’s chagrin. None of the Wangels show up at this funeral.

Bentzy Hanter continues to make discreet inquiries into the whereabouts of the Wangels’ factory.

CHAPTER EIGHTY FIVE

Condolences on the passing of your loved one.

Hauptmann Katarina Wangel

Hauptmann Josef Wangel

Gefreiter Teresa Wangel

Gefreiter Helena Wangel

The note was accompanied by a red artificial flower that was passed from hand to hand among the people who had come to console the mourners.

“Who brought it here?” Yosef Posen asked. “They came themselves?”

“No,” Irwin, Leo’s son-in-law, replied. “Sol went to them after the funeral.”

“What for?” someone asked.

“Technical matters,” Irwin answered.

The widow and her three daughters were quiet, as they had been since they returned from the funeral.

“It’s interesting that Bernard is not signed on this,” the man continued, “and it’s also interesting that they signed with their military titles. When my mother passed away, they just signed their names.”

“Bernard should sign a condolence letter? Come on, really now,” David Elkovitz, who had been standing quietly until now, interjected. “And they probably want to remind us where we are… The situation is not simple.”

“Not simple at all.” Sol came into the room that same minute. “And I’m asking that this conversation end right now. My friends, I was at the manor house before, and I spoke to Wangel at length. They are very angry, and rightfully so. I want to make it clear that there are no more conversations behind their backs, because they and we are now focused on one thing only: continuing to maintain the secrecy of this place. Do I make myself clear?”

The people all nodded wordlessly. Most of them didn’t like his tone, but no one spoke up in protest.

Answered Weekly

“And another question: Does anyone know where Binyamin Schvirtz is right now?” He quickly scanned the faces of the people sitting there.

“Leo said—I mean, Leo alav hashalom, said yesterday that he turned himself in, didn’t he?”

“He did come to the manor house and turned himself in, but then he disappeared right away. Right now, they have no idea where he is, and it’s important to them to ask him a few crucial questions, to know who he contacted.”

“Enough with that already!” Elkovitz raised his voice a notch. “I’m sure that the rumors circulating in the camp got to you too, and you also realize that it was me, right? Schivrtz was playing around with an old communications device that he found, and it beeped to us in the office. I answered the call, I didn’t really understand who it was or what he wanted, and then the call got cut off. That’s all that happened!”

“Are you trying to say that you didn’t participate in Bilhah’s funeral?”

“Not the whole thing,” Elkovitz replied. “And you can tell them that, if you want.” There was a confrontational flash in his eyes. He knew: Sol Sherer would stop at nothing to ingratiate himself to the Wangels, but he would still be very careful about the dignity of the grieving family.

In any case, if it would do anything to calm the situation, he didn’t mind appearing before Wangel and lying for the sake of the safety and lives of everyone else. True, it was a risk, but the risk was very big as it was. And if he could save Binyamin’s life by doing so—then it was certainly worth taking the risk.

“Hey!” Iszak Zuretzky said suddenly; until then he’d been sitting quietly. “It was such a tumult here, we forgot about Bilhah! It’s hard to believe that her levayah was just a few days ago, and her family is sitting shivah now, too! Two funerals in half a week…wow! I just hope this is not a prelude to more funerals!”

People exchanged glances. Iszak never thought before he spoke, and there were not many people who were able to silence him.

Sol was one of the few who could. “Quiet, Iszak,” he cut him off sharply. “Please don’t cause alarm for no reason. There won’t be any more funerals here, if we act in a smart and careful manner, like we have all the years.”

He approached the front door to the house, and from there, he scanned the others. “I need a group of courageous people, who are not afraid to do the right thing,” he said suddenly, as if it had nothing to do with anything. “It’s for an important mission that will take place right after their lunch break. They will receive a two-hour work exemption, and the payment will be in cash, this evening. Anyone who thinks he’s the right man for the job is invited to the office right after the break to hear more details.” He studied everyone for another fraction of a second, nodded almost imperceptibly toward the low chairs in the corner of the room, and left.

“A mission,” Elkovitz muttered. “Rabbosai, think very well before you volunteer—”

The door, which had not yet closed behind Sol’s back, opened again. “David, I’m asking you,” he said, in a tone that didn’t sound like a request at all, “don’t be a snake, okay? It’s better for both of us not to get into a conflict.”

“Of course,” David said placidly. “I wouldn’t choose that either. I’m just wondering, Sol, what you’re thinking: that now you are going to be managing this place?”

“Who else should do it? You? The Orthodox will not manage all of our lives here. And the minute you placed yourself on that side—you don’t come into question anymore. Besides, your father was not a furrier, and my father—Leo’s older brother, Max, of blessed memory— certainly was. The fact that Leo became the work manager here even though my father was older is a question that disturbed a lot of people for many years. But maybe the time has come to rectify that wrong a bit, especially as Leo did not leave behind any sons.”

“Leo became the work manager because he was the more talented of the two, prominently so,” someone blurted. “And that’s who the elder Heidrich and Wangel turned to when they came to the Matthausen camp to take Jews. In any case, please don’t start opening your personal family tensions right now. It’s not the place, nor the time, and both Max and Leo are no longer here anyway.”

Sol glared at him sharply and put his hand on the doorknob. “I’m just reminding everyone of what I said before, okay? Courageous men who are not afraid of public opinion are invited to my office in a few minutes, right after the break.”

Rechel leafed through the pages of the sewing journal, looking for page twenty, which Katarina had pointed to the week before. She could hardly see the clothes, let alone the page numbers.

She heard footsteps on the short flight of stairs leading to the sewing room. Sol Sherer was standing at the door, with two men behind

“What were they looking for? An apple,” Katy answered every child who asked.

“Maybe they lost something,” Rivku answered impatiently.

Only Naomi didn’t answer a thing.

“Are they looking for your brother, Naomi?” Katy whispered loudly. “Is that true?”

Naomi didn’t answer her either.

She gathered the children again, finished the story, and then they all went out to the sandbox to draw pictures in the sand. She sat on a small chair, staring into space, and that’s when she saw the little posse going from house to house.

“They’re totally overdoing it,” Rivku said, following Naomi’s gaze. “What is this violation of privacy? Entering people’s homes when people aren’t there? It’s not right.”

“I’m sure they won’t rummage around on small shelves or anything,” Katy reassured her. “Just in big places, where a person can hide, because they are looking for Naomi’s brother.”

“Naomi’s brother?” Dror, who had sat down on the ground next to Naomi’s chair, and until now had just been picking up fistfuls of sand and dropping them, looked up with large red eyes. “What does that have to do with my grand…my grandfather?”

“Who said it has anything to do with your grandfather?” Rivku asked.

“Because when they came, you told Naomi quietly that this man might be in place of my grandfather who passed away. And that can’t be!” The boy burst into tears again. “I don’t agree! I don’t like him at all! And why is he looking for your brother anyway, Naomi?”

Naomi stroked his cheek but didn’t answer. Squinting, she studied the people who were walking down the path to the next hut. Would they go into her house, too? She took a deep breath. It was a miracle Binyamin wasn’t there. But who knew where he was and what would happen if he’d be caught at the end of this manhunt, chalilah? These people were not making this effort for no good reason. They surely wanted to turn him in.

Her eyes filled with tears, and now she couldn’t see the sand pictures, nor the children, and not even Dror standing beside her and looking at her anxiously. Aryeh would tell her to try to think of the good, see the good. And so, there was one small thing she could think of: that the phone was no longer in her house.

The phone!

Naomi swallowed and, with a supreme effort, smiled at Dror. Then she went with the children back into the preschool, trying to talk to the kids, to give them compliments. But her thoughts were only one big babble of a few words: Telephone. Woods. Night. Hanter.

HELP SAVE KEREN ALMONES V’YESOMIM

& THE 3,150 VULNERABLE FAMILIES RELIANT ON IT

Dear Supporters, Friends and Members of Klal Yisroel:

Nine years ago, I had the zechus to establish Keren Almones V’Yesomim, an organization that transformed the lives of orphaned and single-parent homes. Thanks to the Keren, these families have since never had to go hungry, and were provided with fish and meat every weeknight, Shabbos and Yom Tov.

Through our efforts, we were B”H able to fill their homes with dignity and joy, as evidenced in the many hundreds of letters we regularly receive from grateful almonos.

Over these years, the Keren has provided a staggering $100 million dollar + in critical support. Of course, this has only been possible due to the remarkable generosity of Klal Yisroel, both through major donations as well as steady, ongoing commitments from members in the community.

BUT RECENTLY, THE NEED HAS GROWN BEYOND ANYTHING WE’VE FACED BEFORE.

In 2020, the Keren supported around 900 families with an annual budget of $7 million. The pandemic significantly increased the number of recipients and with more growth since, this past year saw us support more than three times that number, - an incredible 3,150 families - with total costs reaching $24,105,543.00

Baruch Hashem, the giving has risen as well. Over the past 12 months alone, we raised $22,247,141.00. Yet despite this extraordinary support, the Keren has been operating with a $2 million annual deficit for the past three years.

CURRENTLY, WE OWE PAYMENT TO BUTCHER AND FISH STORES FOR THE PAST FIVE MONTHS OF PURCHASES. SEVERAL STORES HAVE ALREADY WARNED THAT UNLESS THE BALANCES ARE CLEARED, THEY WILL BE FORCED TO PUT THE ALMANOS’ ACCOUNTS ON HOLD - SOMETHING THAT, UNFORTUNATELY, HAS ALREADY STARTED TO HAPPEN IN A FEW LOCATIONS, AND THEN WE RECEIVED MANY OF PHONE CALLS WITH TEARS FROM THE AFFECTED FAMILIES ASKING “WHAT WILL WE SERVE THE KIDS”, AND MANY OF THEM EXPRESSED THAT COMING HOME FROM THE STORE WITH EMPTY HANDS IT WAS LIKE “TISHAH B’UV” IN THE HOUSE. If the troubling trend continues and these balances are not paid off immediately, the Keren is at risk of shutting down, chas v’shalom! TODAY, I AM FORCED TO APPEAL TO KLAL YISROEL WITH URGENCY: IN ORDER TO ENABLE THE KEREN TO CONTINUE WE MUST URGENTLY RAISE THE FULL AMOUNT OF THE CURRENT DEFICIT OF 6.5 MILLION DOLLARS AND THAT IS BESIDES THE BUDGET OF THE UPCOMING 3 MONTHS WITH THE YUMIM TOVIM WHAT WILL BE AROUND 6 MILLION DOLLAR.

WE WILL LAUNCH A MAJOR

EMERGENCY CAMPAIGN

TUESDAY – THURDSDAY SEP. 2 / 4

TO SAVE KEREN ALMONES V’YESOMIM AND TO ENSURE THAT THE MOST VULNERABLE AMONG US CAN CONTINUE TO RECEIVE THIS TRULY-ESSENTIAL SUPPORT.

Please help me because I can’t do this alone. Each and every one of us has an achrayus to step up now; to give generously, to help raise funds from others, and to partner in securing this incredible Keren’s future.

Together, we will BEZ”H build a solid foundation so that the Keren’s sacred work can continue until the day these families no longer need our support.

Chazal teach us about the incredible zechus of supporting almanos and yesomim, those who are called HKB”H’s children. There is no doubt that all who partner in this holy mission will be zoche to bracha, health and nachas in their own homes.

With gratitude for the past and heartfelt tefillos for the future, RABBI AVRAHAM LAUFER

COOKIE RECIPE:

2 sticks margarine

1 ½ cups sugar

1 tbs vanilla sugar

2 eggs

3 ½ cups good quality flour

¾ tsp baking powder

½ tsp salt

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Cream marg, sugar and vanilla sugar on high speed. Add eggs. Reduce speed. Add baking powder, salt and slowly add the flour.

Roll out dough and use cookie cutters to create your shapes.

Bake for 9-11 minutes.

Cookies should be a light yellow color, not brown.

ROYAL ICING RECIPE:

3 egg whites

1 lb confection sugar

Few drops of water

Beat egg whites with electric beaters until stiff. Reduce Speed. Slowly add confection sugar while mixing on low speed. Add a few drops of water. Combine.

You now have icing which is a thick consistency. This is good for outlining, writing, or adding any details on top of your cookie. For the cookie backgrounds or areas that need to be smooth, you need flood consistency. You do this by adding a few drops of water until you reach a smooth consistency.

Divide icing into separate bowls and add food coloring or gel as needed.

You are now ready to fill piping bags!

Revel in the cozy warm walls of your Succah this year, enjoying your custom Succos Cookie creations. Or make someone’s Simchas Yom Tov by sending them a complete set of Ushpizen cookies. Start now to get a head start, whilst providing valuable culinary skills for your kids!

COLORS NEEDED

• Outline: Gold (yellow and brown mixed), a few shades of brown and beige, blue, green, red, yellow, orange, white.

• Flood: blue

• Silver glitter, optional.

• You also need a Toothpick

1. Start by making an outline with the gold. You can make it more intricate looking by making a pattern design, a tiny dot and line, continuously.

2. Make the Mizbiach, by piping squares any shape in different shades of brown and beige.

3. Flood the remaining area with blue. Leave to dry overnight or minimum an hour.

4. Pipe the outline of a fire shape with red.

5. Fill with orange and yellow and take a toothpick to swipe the red into the yellow, and on another place, the yellow into the red.

6. Add a banner in the gold.

7. Pipe grass at either side of the Mizbiach. When it dries you can pipe another layer on top.

8. Pipe the words Yizchok on the banner.

9. Optional, pipe clouds in blue and white.

Bridging the Gap Between Parents and Teens.

Why Doesn’t She Understand ME?

Teens feel misunderstood. And the truth is, sometimes they are misunderstood. Mothers may mean well, but they don’t always get what’s going on in their kids’ world. Of course, teens don’t make it easy for their parents to understand either. Below are three common reasons why moms don’t always “get it,” and how understanding their teens’ world can help bridge the gap, reduce tension, and lead to better solutions.

1. Social Pressure

Being a teenager means spending most of your day in a social setting, whether it’s at school or with friends. For most teens, life is about navigating friendships, figuring out where they fit in, and dealing with the pressure to be liked. It’s easy for mothers to forget how overwhelming this can feel because it’s not something they face on a daily basis anymore.

Malky’s daughter, Kaila has always been on the quieter side, and making friends has always been difficult. Every day at school is a challenge for Kaila and it is starting to affect her self-esteem. She comes home feeling like a loser, but when she tries to share her struggles, Malkie tells her, “What’s the problem? You’re such a nice girl! Don’t worry, it’ll all work out.” Kaila feels like her mother doesn’t get it. For Kaila, school is her whole world, and having friends, or not having them, is everything.

What mothers might not realize is that teenagers live in a world that’s constantly evaluating them: How they look, what they say, how they act, and who they hang out with. Social pressure is something they deal with every single day. When mothers brush it off, teens feel even more isolated, convinced that no one gets what they’re going through.

2. Peer Pressure

Peer pressure and the need to fit in has always existed, but today’s teens deal with it on a level far beyond what their parents ever faced. The standard peer pressure, for example, around clothes and material acquisitions has been around for a long time but the level of spending by the average teenager today is way beyond what the average teenager spent 20 years ago.

The internet, cell phones, and the latest technology bring challenges and pressures that most mothers never experienced as teens. On an even more serious note, smoking, vaping, alcohol and drug use have infiltrated our community (even in the ‘best’ schools) and sometimes teens will feel pressure to conform. It can be a difficult struggle for the teen and if a mother doesn’t acknowledge this reality, the problem will only worsen. Even on a lighter note, peer pressure can show up in everyday situations, like a teen wanting to get his license because “all” his friends have theirs.

Leah’s son Binyamin is constantly complaining that he’s the only one of his friends without a driver’s license. They live in a city with excellent public transportation and intense traffic. Leah feels that 16 is too young to

be driving. But to Binyamin, it’s not about safety, it’s about feeling socially off. Every time his friends talk about driving, he feels embarrassed that he’s the only one without his license.

While Leah does not necessarily have to give in to Binyamin’s wishes, it is imperative that she shows empathy for what he’s going through.

3. Frazzled Parents

Parents today are juggling a lot. Many mothers work full-time, manage their homes, and are taking care of a crew of kids. When life feels like a constant rush, it’s hard to slow down to see what’s going on with your teen. Kids pick up on this, and sometimes they interpret a parent’s exhaustion or distraction as disinterest.

Dovid and Sari Cohen are hardworking parents who try their best to provide for their family. Sari comes home at 4:30 p.m. after a long day at her accounting office, exhausted and needing space. Dovid doesn’t get home until 8, so he’s not around to help. By 5:00, their 15-yearold daughter, Shiffy, storms in, upset that supper isn’t on the table. Shiffy feels like her mother is always too frazzled to be there for her. Sari, on the other hand, wonders why a big girl like her daughter can’t help out. The truth is, both sides are feeling overwhelmed. Teens like Shiffy often don’t realize how much their parents are juggling, and parents like Sari don’t realize how much their kids crave a calm, present parent to lean on. Without clear communication, both sides end up feeling misunderstood.

So, What’s the Solution?

Addressing the gap begins with understanding and empathy. It’s vital that mothers realize the genuine challenges their teens experience daily. Teens live in a world that feels all-consuming—social pressures, peer influences, and their own insecurities.

Mothers need to step back and remember what it was like to be a teenager. It’s not always about solving their children’s problems, often it’s about listening, validating their feelings, and letting them know you’re there for them. A simple “That sounds hard” or “I can see why that’s upsetting” can go a long way in helping your teen feel understood.

Of course, it would be nice if teens would also remember that their parents are human. Mothers aren’t perfect, and they’re just trying their best. But that might be hoping for miracles and we’ll probably just have to wait until they have teens of their own to truly get it!

Kumzitz Around the campfire

Stories that make the song play in your head and morph into something greater than the sum of lyrics and melody; an impetus for introspection and growth.

THANK YOU REBBI

I had a teacher

A Rebbi in my life

Who made me what I am today, I was too young then to know that I’d owe

A debt I could never repay.

Now, we were no angels

But Rebbi stayed on

He saw something we couldn’t see, Year after year, at the front of the class

Building the world that would be.

He could’ve been a doctor

accountant, a lawyer

Had wealth and a fancy degree, He could’ve chosen to go for the gold

But instead my Rebbi chose me.

CHORUS:

How I wish you could see that the message you taught

Remains with us all of our lives.

Rebbi, just know that you’re changing the world

You do it one child at a time.

Countless talmidim who stand up and say

Thank you, dear Rebbi.

How I wish you could see that the lessons we’ve learned

Remains with us all of our lives.

I realize that teacher and Rebbi of mine

Had a family and life of his own. And I’d like to tell them

You all have a zechus

Because you were there to support, Like Rabbi Akiva who said of his wife, All that is mine’s really yours.

May you all have brachos And share joy and nachas And blessings for eternity, You could have chosen to go for the gold

But with you, my Rebbi chose me.

CHORUS:

How I wish you could see that the message you taught Remains with us all of our lives.

Rebbi, just know that you’re changing the world

You do it one child at a time.

Countless talmidim who stand up and say Thank you, dear Rebbi.

How I wish you could see that the lessons we’ve learned Remains with us all of our lives.

Rebbi, just know that you’re changing the world

You do it one child at a time.

Countless talmidim who stand up and say Thank you, dear Rebbi Every day.

Rebbi, just know that you’re changing the world

You do it one child at a time.

Countless talmidim who stand up and say

Thank you, dear Rebbi

Every day.

I had a teacher

A Rebbi in my life

But it’s only now when I’m grown,

How I wish you could see that the message you taught Remains with us all of our lives.

Rebbi, just know that you’re changing the world

You do it one child at a time.

Countless talmidim who stand up and say Thank you, Rebbi

Every day

This song, composed by Yitzy Waldner, with lyrics by Miriam Israeli was sung by Benny Friedman in 2021 (produced for Chasdei Lev)

A TRUE ACCOUNT AS TOLD TO C.L.BEER

Officially, she should have called on June 20th, but who could remember that 9:25 phone appointment in the hullabaloo?

Two weeks of sprinklers and freeze pops, and neverending shopping had thankfully passed. Finally, the house was quiet. It was time for Simi to make the call she’d been pushing off for too long.

But Mrs. Lowy deserved a phone call. Simi owed it

to her. Leah’le Perlmutter, the beaming first-grade graduate of June, bore little resemblance to the timid Leah’le of September. Mrs. Lowy was a huge factor in this metamorphosis.

At the kitchen table, on the couch, under her cozy blanket, Leah’le was filled with the presence of her beloved teacher, Mrs. Lowy. It was obvious that Leah’le adored her teacher, the larger-thanlife presence in the classroom who accompanied her home. The anecdotes she repeated clearly reflected her sentiments.

“Mommy, you know what Mrs. Lowy said? She’s giving us chocolate chips because she loves us.”

“Mrs. Lowy said that we know math so well and that we learned something that second graders usually learn.”

To be honest, Simi had worried about Leah’le before the school year. The preschool teachers had called her socially awkward, spaced out, not “with the program.” Would she manage to follow along in elementary school, stuck behind a desk with so many rules to remember and so many new skills to master?

Ever the conscientious mother, Simi did all she could to promote Leah’le’s progress. Physical exercise, constant encouragement and consistent homework became a number one priority. But much of the learning took place in the classroom. Was Leah’le keeping up? Did she speak to other girls during recess? How was she when it came to reading, following instructions, and general appropriateness?

Simi’s worries were soon allayed as she quickly realized that Hashem had blessed Leah’le with phenomenal teachers. Baruch Hashem, Leah’le had made tremendous strides and Simi was supremely grateful, mostly to Hashem for His siyata dishmaya. But His devoted messengers surely deserved recognition.

He could’ve been a lawyer, a doctor, an accountant… but instead, my Rebbe chose me.

“Thanks to your warmth and hard work. I’m telling you, Mrs. Lowy - she loved you. You believed in her and treated her with so much respect and care…I don’t have the words -”

“Baruch Hashem. I’m sure it has a lot to do with your work as a mother, too.”

“Possibly. But I know it wasn’t easy, especially at the beginning…So please accept my thanks.”

“I will.”

“I know how much work goes into teaching and how little feedback teachers get, in proportion to the hours of work and sweat that it involves. My husband teaches.”

“Really? Where?”

“In Yeshiva Bais Mordechai.”

“Hold on. It’s good I’m sitting now. Yeshivas Bais Mordechai. So he’s that Rabbi Perlmutter, Kittah Hey, right?”

“Yes.”

“You’re not going to believe this but I must tell you about the impact your husband had on me.”

Simi sat up straighter in her chair and listened intently to Mrs. Lowy’s dramatic account.

That’s why she took the phone in hand even though the drier was beeping and she really needed to wash some dishes.

“Mrs. Lowy?”

“Speaking.”

“Hi, it’s Simi Perlmutter, Leah’le’s mother. I’m just calling you to thank you for giving her such a super year in first grade.”

“Thank you, Mrs. Perlmutter. It really was a pleasure teaching Leah’le. I’m amazed at how she blossomed -”

“When I moved to Monsey two years ago, there were so many adjustments to make. My kids needed to get used to their new schools, my husband had to get used to his Kollel and of course, I needed a job. A friend of mine told me there were some resource room positions available at Bais Mordechai. This sounded like a fit for me, since I had lots of teaching experience and this was less involved and much easier… So for that first year, I spent lots of time at Bais Mordechai, pulling kids out of class and helping them build their social skills, emotional resilience, whatever…

I would watch the Rebbeim from the corner of my eye, walking with such purpose, speaking to the talmidim…especially your husband. In

particular, I remember how one student who was usually so withdrawn and had such a hard time expressing himself literally lit up when describing his experience of Haschalas Gemara. We visited Yeshivas Bais Binyomin; it’s a huge yeshiva. We walked between the aisles, back and forth and everyone was doing the same thing - learning Gemara!’ Rabbi Perlmutter taught us a song where we ask Hashem to help us enjoy learning and we sang it to the Rosh Yeshiva!’”

“Oh - I heard all about that,” Simi interjected. “My husband puts so much effort into that oncein-a-lifetime Haschalas Gemarah experience but comes home wondering where the boys really appreciated it…”

“In general, the boys loved being in Rabbi Perlmutter’s class. He made the boys feel so good, so proud, so loved.”

“Thank you for sharing this, Mrs. Lowy.”

“In my hometown, I had taught First Grade for many years and thought it was time for a change. Doing something more low key was probably right for that year, but after watching your husband in action and seeing his impact before my eyes, I decided that I would dive right back into classroom teaching. Ah - there’s nothing like it. I’m so glad I got back into it!”

“So am I. And so is Leah’le!”

“I can’t believe I didn’t put two-and-two together. Had I known Leah’le Perlmutter is the daughter of Rebbe Perlmutter, she would’ve received royal treatment!”

“Come on - you did give her the royal treatment. Leah’le really felt how much you cared about her.”

What goes around comes around, thought Simi as she tied up the conversation. Now it was time for her to pass the message on to Yossi, also known as Rabbi Perlmutter.

Her mind fluttered back to the recent conversation they’d had last week and probably several weeks prior and maybe several weeks prior.

“I don’t know why I’m teaching. We need to pay for Chanie’s camp. And Dovid’s therapy. I got a call from the cheder telling me about the daycamp balance. And I could really use a new pair of glasses…”

Simi knew better than to convince him otherwise; he just needed a listening ear.

“I mamesh couldn’t learn this afternoon; it was so hard to concentrate. I wish I had a job that just covered the bills, and you wouldn’t have to work either.”

“I wish the same.”

She paused, looking at the stress lines on his forehead. Softly, she plowed ahead, even though she promised she wouldn’t.

“But remember what Mrs. Loeffler told you? How Naftali is doing so well this year, thanks to the extra attention you give him, along with some nosh? And Chaim, the boy who comes from a difficult family situation. You’re literally his lifeline.”

“True. But still.”

The conversation was one big piece of deja vu. So what should I do? Should I go into accounting? Social work? Maybe an administrative job?

Yossi was brilliant. He was motivated, organized and disciplined. He had a way with people and was tech-savvy too.

The words of the poignant Rebbi song rang in her ears:

He could’ve been a doctor accountant, a lawyer Had wealth and a fancy degree, He could’ve chosen to go for the gold But instead my Rebbi chose me.

The conversation somehow changed its course, with Yossi’s doubts gnawing at him…until the next pick-me-up in the form of a random tip, a sincere thank you or positive regards to keep him going for another little while.

Yossi’s students licked his words, saturated with wisdom, sincerity and warmth like one would an ice cream on a hot day. They reveled in his positive energy and the crystal clear explanation on Gemara, Halacha and Hashkafa. That was no news to Simi. But to think he had influenced a woman to pick up her teaching career…and bring sunshine into the lives of so many impressionable six-yearolds, including their own precious Leah’le? Simi couldn’t wait to share this rather wild story with Yossi.

BE FIT WITH BENEFIT

QI really want to lose weight but I don't like food, food. I am more like a nosher nibbler kind of woman and don't appreciate solid foods like salmon, avocado and the like. Is there a problem losing weight from low-calorie foods that are not necessarily nutritious? For example, I love having wraps with cheese. The wraps are 80 calories but they are quite processed and junkie. Or, I prefer rice cakes over whole wheat bread. I also like sugar free, fat free ice cream as a lunch. Calorie wise they are lower, so is this an issue for long term weight loss?

AIf you find yourself gravitating toward rice cakes, processed wraps, and cheese sticks over full meals like salmon, quinoa, or hearty vegetables, you're not alone. You’re what you might call a “nibbler” or a “nosher”—someone who prefers light, snacky foods over full, nutrient-rich meals. And yes, it is very possible to lose weight by staying in a calorie deficit with these kinds of foods. But the real question is: At what cost?

Technically, weight loss comes down to a simple equation: calories in vs. calories out. So, if you’re eating mostly low-calorie foods—even if they’re not the most nutritious—you may see the number on the scale go down. But picture this: A car can run on low-grade diesel or watered-down gas. You might even get it to drive for a few miles or weeks. But eventually, that engine will pay the price. It may sputter, slow down, or even break down completely. Your body is no different. You may be saving on calories, but you're also skimping on the nutrients your body needs to function, heal, and thrive. Here’s what might happen when your diet is mostly made up of processed snack foods, even if they’re low in calories:

• Low energy: You may feel drained or foggy because you're not getting enough protein, healthy fats, or fiber to fuel your brain and body.

• Weak metabolism: Without adequate protein and whole foods, your muscle mass may decline, slowing your metabolism over time.

• Poor skin, hair, and nails: These are often the first areas to show signs of nutrient deficiencies.

• Cravings and overeating later: Processed foods lack the staying power of real meals, so you

might find yourself feeling hungry more often or bingeing later in the day.

• Mood swings and anxiety: Believe it or not, the nutrients you eat play a massive role in brain health and emotional regulation.

If your long-term goal isn’t just to be “thin,” but to be healthy, strong, emotionally stable, radiant, and energized, then your food has to reflect that.

You want to feel like a woman who glows from within, who has clarity in her thoughts, patience with her kids, and stamina to do what her life demands of her. That doesn’t come from rice cakes and cheese sticks alone. You don’t need to force yourself to sit down to a heavy plate of salmon and kale if that turns you off. But you can start weaving in better options, little by little:

• Boost your wrap: Add a slice of turkey or chicken breast, some shredded lettuce, or even a swipe of hummus for fiber and protein.

• Upgrade rice cakes: Top them with cottage cheese and cherry tomatoes.

• Smoothies: A great in-between option. Blend Greek yogurt with frozen berries and a handful of spinach—you won’t even taste the greens.

• Egg muffins or protein bites: Make snacky foods that feel like nibbles but are packed with nutrients.

• Soups or purees: If textures bother you, try smooth soups made from lentils, carrots, or butternut squash.

Just like a car thrives on high-quality fuel, your body will glow with the right nutrition—not just shrink. You deserve more than just weight loss. You deserve to feel amazing from the inside out. Start small. Nibble better. Nourish wisely!
