Chairman’s Report for August 2025

Greetings to you all.

The highlight of the month was, I believe, the display and fundraising at Central Ford on August 24 th . About 30 vehicles from our club were present along with an equal number from the Hot Rod club and Classic Drivers Club. While the day was a bit grey and rain threatened on occasions there was a steady flow of onlookers wandering around admiring the cars. The outcome was $788.20 raised for the Cancer Society, which I think was a really good outcome. We are also indebted to Central Ford for the work they put into the display, the coffee and barbeque provided and the prizes that were awarded at the end of the morning. I am also aware that some of our members volunteered their time on the last weekend of August to collect further donations to the Cancer Society on their Daffodil Day. ( A Thank You to those who volunteered.)

I must say I am quite puzzled as to why there are two separate Daffodil Days on successive weekends. Am I missing something here ? I intend taking the matter up with Kaaren Smylie who the driving force behind the VCC version of Daffodil Day. The delivery of daffodil flowers on the Monday after the VCC version of Daffodil Day also seems to have gone out the window ☹

Jumping back to the beginning of the month I attended the VCC A G M in Invercargill. I have reported separately on this event and you have all received a report from the Chairman on the A G M so I will not bother you with any further comment.

One concerning problem that arose during the month was the discovery of a couple of leaks in our building. The first problem arose when the light in the foyer died. I thought it was a

dead bulb, so I took the fitting down only to find it full of water. A few days later I was advised of a leak in the kitchen. A plumber looked at these two problems and later resecured the flashing above the entrance and took steps to secure the roofing material over the kitchen area. He advised me that many of the lead head nails could be pulled out by hand ! He strongly recommended that a roofer be engaged to remove all the nails and screw the corrugated iron down. Quotes will be obtained from professional roofers to undertake this work. I suspect it will not be cheap !

The hall is getting a little more use with a number of casual hirings and a regular hiring from a company that undertakes first aid training. Red, the lady that runs this training, has advised that if any of our members want first aid training it can be provided “without charge”. Just front up and tell her you are a member of VCC. We have advertised on local Facebook pages seeking bookings from community groups without success but will pursue this option. Advertising in the local paper is a waste of time. I tried to insert an ad for our Daffodil Day display and they never even bothered to print it. Nor have they responded to an email I sent expressing my “disappointment”. Very frustrating. An updated constitution for the branch is now complete and has been previewed by the committee. The September committee meeting will set a date for a Special General Meeting to, I hope, adopt this document. Once a date is set, we will send all members a copy of this document which I know you will read avidly. Take care out there.

Sulphur City Annual Rally 2025 - 30 August

Owen and I, along with Lorraine and Neil Chave participated in our neighbouring club’s annual rally. Both of us travelled over to Rotorua first thing in time for the briefing, and neither of us knew we had each entered. Funny. We had lovely weather even though a weather bomb was supposed to be going through. I think we only had a couple of minimal showers and predominantly blue skies.

From their clubrooms opposite the Redwoods we travelled around the Lakes and turned onto a country road travelling through Rendall Forest and some lovely bushy countryside to Matata on the coast. On leaving this area we travelled back towards Rotorua and ended up at Rangiruru School for a delicious and well earned three course lunch. An awesome effort from this rural community school. They did themselves proud.

After a couple of fun games, one testing our knowledge of New Zealand geography, the other testing darts skills on the school playground we travelled back to Rotorua via Pyes Pa Road and around the back of Lake Rotorua returning to the clubrooms for afternoon tea and prize giving. Unfortunately neither of us were in the winners pool, but it was a great day through the rural roads we wouldn’t normally take when going from A to B. Well done to their volunteers and route planners

All up we travelled 390 kilometres the round trip. Best to say we were pretty tired by the time we got home

Ladies Day

August’s ladies get together was held the same day as the parts shed opening, without prior planning. It was a coincidence on my part. We had a great turn out again with a variety of crafts, different faces, cuppas and happy chats. It was lovely to welcome two newish members - Alma and Linda. We hope to see you along next time as well.

Around midday the chaps came upstairs after shutting up the shed and joined us for a cuppa, muffin and/or scone. It’s great seeing everyone intermingling and getting to know each other

Talking about the next month Tony tells me the parts shed is opening again on 25 September, so if the clubrooms are free I will book that date from 9.30am to 2.30pm for anyone who wants to join us. Remember just come along for the company if you wish, there is no pressure to do anything crafty, I do because I’ve committed to being present for the entire time.

In Memorium.

The club was recently advised that Jerry Threlfall, a past member of our club passed away in 24 August. He had been unwell for quite some time.

MONTHLY CLUB NIGHT

No monthly club nights for August nor will there be one in September. Weather and track conditions mean not many people want to go out at night.

Bring on Summer

2026 Vero National Rally

A quick meeting was held for those wishing to attend and try and co-ordinate travel. Seems like most were doing there own thing with family catch ups along the way.

Entries have now closed for the rally.

NB. Those who still need to get a VIC for their car get in quick. National headquarters have advised that there are a lot being received and there is a backlog of around 8 weeks at present. Get them in quick and note when you send them if they are for the Vero National rally next year.

CLUB RADIATOR BADGES

The club (read Owen Duncan) has had a supply made of radiator plaques for members. These are full colour plaques with fixing bolts attached to the reverse. Cost to members is $25-00 for the plaque. Owen has also had made a mounting bracket which may make mounting it to your car a bit easier. These will cost $1500. If you would like a set give Owen a ring on 0274 482 484.

Daffodil Day

Thankyou to Central Ford for hosting the National VCC Daffodil Day. A great turn out of our VCC members as well as other local car club groups. A line up of cars from vintage to modern and we could have had more if our advertising had got through.

I think Neil (Central Ford) was a little over whelmed at the number of cars that turned up. Thanks also Central Ford for the free coffee or icecream and later in the day BBQ sausages.

Pam and I arriving in our Model A were also a little overwhelmed when Neil got us to back into the showroom and parking next door to a classic Mustang. Ray and Jillian were also asked to park their very nice MK 3 Ford Zephyr in the showroom and Brian's MK 2 Ford Zephyr parked outside. Many thanks to our Club Members that helped out with taking the Cancer collection bucket around again and again. Many thanks to the generosity of people that filled the bucket. Over $800.00.

Talking to Neil later in the week, they were also excited about hosting the Daffodil Day and are looking forward to the better and bigger things next year. Again thanks to Ford and let's hope they are onboard again for next year.

Parts Shed Update

I must say that opening our Parts Shed on a monthly basis has been well received, a small numbers of members calling for a chat. The Parts team are still working on putting up a few more shelves to accommodate more Parts coming in and to make a section for our collection of oil filters and distributor caps. Work is in progress to have these items catalogued. Some of the new items in the Parts Shed are two sets of brand new pistons, possibly for a small 4 cylinder engine, front steering rack for Mitsubishi Mirage. A large selection of Motor Sports (The original Racing Magazine).A vehicle detailing kit and Leather care kit

Our August Parts Shed Open Morning coincided with Heather's crafts day, so when we closed up at 12 oon we enjoyed coffee, muffins and scones together. Looking forward to next month.

Next Parts Shed Open Morning is on the 30th October 10.00am to 12 noon.
