Chairman’s Report for September 2025

Greetings to you all. I am pleased to see that spring is definitely with us. Trees are starting to flower and spring blooms are evident all over town. The weather is warmer and highly variable spring weather is with us.

Overall, it has been a relatively quiet month for the club. The club breakfast, the Petrolheads coffee morning and the ladies gathering have ticked along nicely. The ladies gathering, led by Heather Duncan is steadily increasing in numbers. The Parts Shed, led by Tony Mannington has also attracted some support. I have noticed a small collection of chairs in the part shed so I gather there is a bit of chatter going on The parts shed group gathers with the ladies group later in the morning for a cuppa, a snack and some discussion.

This months regular monthly meeting was not held because of the cold weather, but with spring now here our monthly meetings will resume. The regular club run went to Mangakino to the Lake Hop. A small group of members went out to this huge event which involved a lot of walking and some lengthy queues. All this to view a wonderful collection of motor cars from throughout the North Island. Planning is underway for our October run which will be via some country roads to a rural café that we have not visited for quite some time. More information on this event will be provided in due course.

Tenancies in the hall are very slowly increasing with the recent addition of a lady who runs first aid courses. I have also received an enquiry from an electrical inspector from Whakatane who intends to run courses here. I offered to provide a royal tour of our hall initially, not realizing that he was from out of town, but we settled on me providing photographs of the hall. I have yet to learn the outcome.

You may recall that last month I mentioned that we had had a problem with leaks in the hall. I am pleased to advise that one of our newer members, Paul Hooper, who is skilled in roof repairs offered to undertake the necessary work to ensure the hall is watertight at no charge. His offer was gratefully accepted and this work was undertaken. Paul subsequently advised that the problem was not as severe as we had been led to believe. A big “Thank You” for this work. Also, the light at the front door has been replaced because the fitting was found to be full of water, so there is another problem solved. Members and guests can now safely depart at night in a well-lit environment.

I’ll finish by providing you all with some useless information. I’m sure you have all heard the expression “on tenter hooks” . I now know that it comes from the tartan weaving industry. The final process following the weaving of the fabric is washing and drying. Once washed the initial drying process in completed in a machine called a “tenter” where the cloth is stretched out under tension and the selvedges are held on a series of metal prongs known as “tenter hooks”. The things you learn

Ladies Day

Held on September 25th this time to coincide with the parts shed opening. A nice turn out of crafty ladies with some beautiful creations being made. Scones from Heather and Sausage rolls from Maureen keep them going at lunch along with what the ladies themselves bought.

The contingent from the parts shed arrived at midday and enjoyed a cuppa and food generously provided.

This is turning into a great initiative by Heather and deserves to be well supported.

One thing I will say is that the ladies do not do this to feed the men once the parts shed is closed. To those men maybe the contribution of a nibble could be provided by you. Just a thought.

PARTS SHED UPDATE

A good gathering of gentlemen turned out for this. A few sales and a few donations on the day were both well received. Thanks for those. The shed is still in transition so eventually we will fulfil Bruces desire to have everything catalogued and in its place.

For those that need parts we do have a good supply of NEW electrical parts, a huge range of new oil filters, distributor caps and points. Check us out before you go spending your hard earned pension on new parts elsewhere. You will know what you need so check with Tony or Graeme to see if we have it. Still need some expert identifiers for some donated parts.

There is also a large quantity of good used parts so come down on open day or if necessary give us a ring and we can meet you at a mutually convenient time.

Was great to catch up with Marty and Lynne when Lynette and I were in Melbourne last month. They are a busy couple with lots to do with their car. They have joined both the British Car Club and the Rootes Group Car Club. He has sent me some of there newsletters and both are very active clubs.

From the July magazine; of the ABCCC

NEW MEMBERS A hearty welcome to the well-oiled machine that is the All British Classics Car Club. We hope to be able to welcome you and, in actual fact, your British classic motor cars, at one of events soon. Our club aims to have two motoring events each month, so there are plenty of fabulous events for you to select from.

Welcome! Name Year Car Model Marty & Lynne Sutherland 1966 Hillman Super Minx

A QUICK REPORT FROM ME & LYNETTE

Lynette and I recently spent 5 weeks in Australia looking after our daughters house and animals while she went away.

As mentioned before we met up with Marty & Lynne Sutherland for lunch and had a good old chin wag.

On one of our days, and having the use of our daughters car we went to visit “The Spanner Man"

The Spanner Man was John Piccoli, an Australian farmer from Boort, Victoria, who became a celebrated artist after contracting polio and being confined to a wheelchair He used his time after retiring from farming to create over 100 sculptures from thousands of antique spanners, welding them into impressive figures in his garden. His unique creations, displayed on his farm, became a major tourist attraction, and his story of resilience and artistic talent continues to inspire, with his wife and son still maintaining the sculpture garden and its legacy. .

Here’s a few photos we took.

Some of the remaining spanners from the over 160,000 that he purchased from swap meets all around Victoria.

These are larger than life sculptures as can be seen with this Marlin. That’s Lynette in the red coat on the right taking another photo. There’s a small boat just to the left of her with a fishing pole in it attached to a wire going up to the fish with a lure just by the dorsal fin.

Every thing is made from old spanners welded together. His son told us he never did any drawings or measurements. He just had an idea of what he wanted to make, grabed his Mig welder, some spanners and started.

If you ever get anywhere near this it’s well worth a look. A$15 to enter.

He also has a collection of classic cars although most in need of some TLC A beautiful 1928 Chev truck, fully restored and operational and some very early John Deere tractors that the son has restored.

The club is indebted to the continued support from the following sponsors. Members are encouraged to use their services if you can.
