CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

The main event for October has been and gone for another year, once again thanks to the efforts of Colin Hey as the Swap Meet committee chairman making sure everything was in place and there was somebody doing everything that needed to be done.

Of course there are a huge number of people involved in the running of the Swap Meet, so to the members of the organising committee, the team setting up before and cleaning up afterwards, or those finding a few hours to help out with one of the many jobs that need doing over the weekend, thanks to you all on behalf of the branch for your contribution to the most significant fundraising event for the year. Without the income from the swap meet there would be considerably less funds available for ongoing maintenance and improvement work, so it really is the members who volunteer their time that keep the branch and its facilities going.

Particularly of note this year was the extra effort needed from the grounds maintenance team, and all of the members who answered the call for help with rakes in hand, to get the grounds back into shape after the tree removal work and ready to go in a very short time.

Meanwhile the ongoing business of the club continues, it was very pleasing to receive some feedback on the proposed new club by-laws, quite often we received nothing which makes it very difficult to represent the views of branch members at national meetings when we don’t know what their thoughts are.

Looking forward there’s plenty coming up during the warmer months, so time to get your vehicles sorted and your entries in, and we’ll see you out and about.

SECRETARY’S REPORT

Well what a busy Month, Swap meet another huge success, what a team and huge thanks to all that helped me over the weekend, I couldn’t have done it with out you. Also, a huge thanks to John Forster for stepping into my shoes for arranging our visits to rest homes on a regular basis.

Sadly, my time as secretary has had to come to an end owing to poor health. I will be around helping in any small way that I can. I hope my replacement will enjoy the roll as much as I have over the last nearly eight years and I wish the Branch all the very best for the future.

Well, we are now looking forward to a nice warm summer (soon I hope).

On another subject it has been mentioned to me that the 50yr history of the branch book that is given out to all our new members over the last number of years are starting to run low and the idea came up that some members may like to donate their copy back to the branch so they can redistributed to our new members. These could be dropped of at the Bar and we can put them into storage.

Well, that’s all for now I hope I can hand over the reins to my replacement in the near future, and I can quietly slip into the back ground.

Just for interest! The worlds best selling Automobiles

Three cars have been widely acknowledged as the "best selling automobile in the world" since Ford built its millionth Model T on December 10, 1915. The Model T itself remained the highest seller until forty five years after production ceased in 1927.

On February 17, 1972 Volkswagen claimed that the Ford had been surpassed by the Beetle, when the 15,007,034th was manufactured.Although the Model T has subsequently been credited with 16.5 million units sold, the error is inconsequential in light of the Beetle reaching 21 million. The Model T was eventually surpassed within Ford by the Ford F-Series, a pickup truck that is directly descended from the Model T roadster pickup.

The Beetle remained the bestselling vehicle in the car industry until the late 1990s, when it was overtaken by the more modern and efficient Toyota Corolla. However, this was an example of the modern practice of applying a brand name across a wide range of

vehicles, and retaining it for marketing purposes even as the car changes drastically. While the first Corolla in 1966 was rear-wheel drive and rode on a 2286 mm wheelbase, the current hybrid and all-wheel drive models share a 2640 mm wheelbase and use a mechanically unrelated platform. Sales of the Beetle were also surpassed by its successor nameplate, the Volkswagen Golf.

I would really like to thank the team that worked in Headquarters over Swap Meet Weekend. You each added a different dimension to make it a fun weekend. I was also able to get out and about to enjoy the shopping and catching up with people.

Enjoy some spring weather and have a fabulous month of motoring.

We have a new Hub email, if you haven't yet done so please save thehub@vcccanterbury.org.nz into your contacts. This address will allow you to contact me for Hub related Inquiries.

From The Editors Desk

The Swap Meet has been and it was a good weekend with abit of sunburnt. The Christmas trees are starting to come down from the storage space above the library as we look to a busy last few month of the year.

Speaking of Christmas, our Christmas Social will be on 6th December, and the Children’s Picnic is coming up on 14th December.

As we coming in to the Christmas season a reminder that December and January hub is one so if you have stuff for January get it in early or miss out as there is no hub for January.

Work is getting busy so I am not answering emails as quick as I normally would please be in mind I volunteer my time to do this newsletter so I do edit the hub and the website the last weekend of the month when I know everything is in.

See you on the road, Brodie Williams

VETERAN REPORT

I hope I can be excused for not offering much in the way of a report this month, but not a lot has happened in the way of veteran motoring or events, given that my focus has been pretty much on Swap Meet this last month. It’s certainly taken up a lot of my time! The weather too hasn’t been particularly conducive to being out much, with a real mixed bag including many wet days and even a late dusting of snow for some, and of course very strong winds. Our normal coffee morning went ahead on Tuesday 14th, something I had been looking forward to, as it also meant that Swap Meet was over and I could start to relax a bit. One thing that didn’t happen though was our monthly Random Run – it just got too hard to make it work unfortunately. But hey, that’s why it’s called a Random Run! After Swap Meet I managed to spend a long weekend in Adelaide at a Wolseley national rally event over there, which was run in conjunction with the annual Bay to Birdwood event. This is a run for any veteran, vintage or classic vehicle, starting at West Beach on the south side of Adelaide city, and finishing 67km later at the Birdwood National Motor Museum in the Barossa region north-east of the city. At least a dozen veteran cars took part in the run, and it was great seeing them out and being enjoyed by the families that owned them. As it happened, one of the Wolseley Club members over there was also a keen veteran enthusiast, owning an early De Dion, Peugeot and Talbot. We had some very long conversations, particularly about different events, spare parts and cars. Another surprise was looking around all the cars and suddenly running into Chris Dyer, who was over there with Rose on a Model T event. Small world!

Entries for the Hororata Highland Games run and display on 8th November have now closed, and we ended up with 19 cars, many of them veterans. A good day is planned, and hopefully we’ll get good weather. It will be reported on next month. Two days after that we’ll be at Thirsty Acres in Kirwee for our monthly coffee morning.

BARN HIRE & CAMPING

This year’s Swap Meet would have to go down as being one of the better I can remember, and for two reasons. We were better prepared for it beforehand, and (mostly) because of the great weather we had over the weekend. I reckoned that this year we were about 2 weeks ahead of where things normally are at in the month leading up to it, so there was certainly a lot less stress and worrying about what still had to be done. The biggest unknown however is always the weather. This year we got 3 really good days – just like the swap meets of 10 years ago with NW winds and very warm temperatures. There was quite a bit of rain in the few weeks before the event meaning the grounds stayed quite green, but by the end of the weekend and with thousands of punters tramping up and down the walkways between the stalls, the wind was starting to pick up a bit of dust – something I haven’t seen for at least the last 5 years. Probably a nice problem to have!

Friday and Saturday went particularly well with very good numbers through the gates. There were very few problems to deal with, and the site holders were telling us that trading was brisk –especially on the Friday when the serious buyers were out in force. Saturday turned out to be the family day we had hoped for, with lots of children out with their parents for a good day out. It was great to see families picnicking in the grounds, the playground being used constantly, and children’s entertainment being well supported. The Saturday night function was really well attended, and although I couldn’t be there myself, I was told the band was excellent and the supper was good, and it seemed eve-

ryone had a good time.

Sunday is always a bit of challenge given that quite a few of the site holders pack up last thing on Saturday and head for home. A decision was made on Saturday evening to lower the entry price to $5.00 for Sunday, and this was appreciated by those that did come out that day. Sunday is getting to be known to be ‘Bargain Day’, given that many site holders often don’t want to take their treasures and ‘other stuff’ home again and are usually keen to do a good deal to anyone showing any interest. And then at 2.00pm we were confident enough that everyone had done their dash and we started to pack up. By that evening most of the grounds were clear of site holders, the rubbish bins had been cleared away, and things were looking pretty tidy.

By midday Monday everything had been cleaned up perfectly by our amazing post-Swap Meet working team, and looking around the grounds you’d hardly know that anything had happened. All the signs were packed up and put away, the litter collected from the eastern end of the grounds where the nor-west winds had deposited a lot of it, and hardly a tent or caravan was left on the grounds anywhere. Another one done and dusted! At the moment we are still paying the bills, but I’m confident enough to say that the financial outcome is about the same as last year, which also was a very good year.

Congratulations as well to the winning One-Make Car Clubs who won prizes for their club displays – in First place was the Vintage Austin Register, 2nd went to the Rover Car Club, and 3rd to the Model A Ford Club. The prize for the best veteran or vintage car on display went to Paul Cameron with a beautifully presented Austin 7 Ulster. The prizes will be presented at November’s Noggin.

Before finishing, I just want to say a huge thanks to the very large team that makes this event work. We are fortunate to have an amazing Swap Meet committee, who all know what to do and just get on with it. Thank you each and every one of you. Also to the

dozens of helpers who make sure that the multitude of tasks that need to be done before, during and after the event are taken care of. Whether it be grounds preparation, putting up signs, working in the parts shed, cleaning toilets, picking up rubbish, helping with security or on the gates – thank you all very much for your time. It’s really appreciated.

Colin Hey, Swap Meet Chairman.

I was away in Australia for last month’s OCBC, but I’m told it was a good day with the usual good turnout. Thanks everyone for coming, especially on the back of Swap Meet the weekend before.

November’s OCBC is on Sunday 16th November. The theme for November is “The Sixties”. So, if you have something from that decade lurking in your garage, time to dust it off and bring it out. Or, if you don’t, please come out anyway in or on your favourite vehicle. Please remember that you don’t even have to come in a club eligible vehicle – if you have something that you just enjoy driving or want to show off, just head on out and enjoy a coffee with fellow enthusists.

VOG LOG

After a doubtful forecast and a dampish Monday afternoon on the 13th October we awoke to a cool dry Tuesday morning on the 14th so it was all systems go for the lads to get out on the roads again and blow the cobwebs out of the system.

Colin Hider organised a run for us this time at his hometown of Kaiapoi. He was fortunate enough to have the lone of one of Dave Backhouse’s trusty bikes this time as Colin seems to have bad luck with his Black’n’Roll Solex it doesn’t seem to last the distance so he was over the moon to have a bike that got him from the “start line” to the “finish line” without any hiccups and to cover the distance at a reasonable pace. John McIntyre appeared at the start this time on his E-bike known as “The Beast” John had tried his Solex before leaving home to make sure all was in order and just short of reaching his home there was a loud BANG – darn a puncture! Too late to do repairs at this point so “The Beast” was the next best thing to keep up with the speed of the “Gang”.

A short ride covered a trip along the bike track on the banks of the northern side of the Kaiapoi River out to the mouth of the Waimak’. Crikey there sure was a flow of water out there after the nor’westers of the weekend and the torrents of rain on the West Coast. The Yacht Club out at Kairaki was marooned. This bike track eventually brings you out onto Beach Road at Pines Beach. So it was then a bumpy ride on a rough gravel track back into Kaiapoi I commented at our lunch break that it reminded me of a guitar tune played by Duane Eddy back in the 60’s “40 miles of Bad Road”.

Ending up at the Kaiapoi Club for our lunch break was a great way to end the occasion. Another enjoyable ride was had by all. Apart from your’s truly losing a bolt out of the Solex’s throttle control at the start there were no other casualties along the way and hence no

On a cloudy morning with a cool wind 26 car loads of keen 9-90ser’s gathered at the Rolleston Community centre carpark where we tried out the speaker Jack P has donated for our use for the first time. It worked well and we set off on a roundabout route through our beautiful Canterbury countryside taking us past Burnham School, a short section of state highway 1 and onto Selwyn Lake Rd. Along some less travelled roads including a short section of smooth well graded shingle past Taumutu Marae and into a farm yard with a number of large sheds which turned out to house a collection of around fifty vintage tractors, Olivers and Allis Chalmers in the main. Started by Peter Donald’s Father and added to by Peter. Many with sentimental connections to the family, along with a nice collection of model tractors. After a good wander among the collection and an interesting talk from Peter we carried on to a lovely sheltered picnic spot by the lake for our lunch and the raffle followed by a short drive across the paddock to view Peter’s beautiful collection of Ford Falcons and a couple of other nice Ford models.

Another great outing with good company well organised by Les Sloan. Thanks Les.

Next month’s on 12th November run is organised by George Nimo. His pre run instructions are below.

Meeting at the peg Hotel carpark in Belfast at 10am. For a drive in the North Canterbury countryside to a large vehicle collection and country Garden. Our hosts have asked for a donation of $10.00 per car which will be donated to Cancer research. This will be collected when the instructions are handed out. Please bring a $10.00 dollar note. Thanks. George.

I unfortunately wont be able to be there as I have a hospital appointment that day so will leave you in George’s capable hands. At a recent gathering of people who contribute their time and skills to our favourite outings it was voted to have a change to our 9-90s

Christmas gathering and this year we will be having a Kiwi Christmas BBQ at the Barn, Cutler park with sausages, meat patties and sliced Ham along with Onions, Bread and sauces provided. Please feel free to bring salads and other refreshments for yourselves or to share.

This is because restaurant meals are getting more and more expensive, harder to organise and it seems a waste to be sitting in a crowded noisy restaurant at that time of year. Happy motoring. Ken.

Vintage Report

It’s been eventful to say the least, since October’s issue of The Hub!

The Swap Meet is a great event for many reasons, not least for the opportunity of a good find but also to catch up with acquaintances and likeminded folk from not only the local branch but also from around the country.

This year the Canterbury Branch Swap Meet was held across the weekend of the 10th, 11th and 12th October. Friday was almost ideal as the weather was warm and dry with light cloud which made it almost perfect for hunting for those much wanted parts and items. There was an abundance of stalls which, to my eye appeared well stocked, with a flow of potential buyers steady across the day.

Saturday seemed much the same with a good number of people turning up early. The weather started as Friday although it turned hotter and with that good old Norwest wind hitting late morning. The public display parking was full to overflowing by 10.30am, this was further adding to a really good event.

As a buyer I certainly made a number of trips back to my car boot across both days and on Saturday I also assisted in security duties. With my time fully occupied on both days I still hadn’t managed to view any of the single make displays and complete viewing of the vehicles for sale.

I’m beginning to understand why people stay over for the weekend.

Old Cars, Bikes and Coffee was on Sunday 19th October and I finally got the Cadillac out from what appears to be winter hibernation. It was never meant to be like that but just turned out that way. Given it was its first time out since a WoF in May, it ran just as it usually does, smoothly. There appeared to be a few less vehicles turn up, that I noticed in the past events but that didn’t stop the enthusiasm and enjoyment for those attending.

I can’t sign off without mentioning the appalling weather from Wednesday 22nd through Friday 24th October. I was in South Canterbury on Wednesday and half of Thursday before travelling up to Christchurch. I can only hope that you have not suffered too much damage and that the clean up has been minimal. It certainly is a chilling reminder just how powerful mother nature can be.

See you motoring out and about.

Commercial Report

Greetings all,

What interesting spring weather we’ve been having. I hope no-one has suffered from these severe winds. I’ve had worse that were not predicted no damage around our place. I just get frustrated when visually it appears to be a nice sunny day but when you step outdoors you get whipped in the face with your hoodie cord! Not pleasant!

My daughter has finished her degree and had her final exams at Waikato University – so I am booked on the ferry in November to drive up and move her out of her flat and bring all her collected possessions home. Will be a quick trip and I’m hoping all these weather events will be over by then – fingers crossed for no road closures and smooth ferry crossings!

The Vintage Rally in September was a great success. Well done to Jeremy and his team of helpers that made it all happen. The Rally was around 110km long and I was very pleased with the performance of the Lagonda. I kept up with the others, even heading into some gusty nor’ west winds on the slight incline of the Old West Coast Road. Coming home with a tail wind and slightly downhill made for easy motoring. It was very economical also which was a big bonus. My co-pilot clocked me at a cruising speed of 68pmph which I was very pleased with. It was a reasonable turnout but I’m thinking our members favours their PV and PWV more now than the older Vintage models that I assume are just getting harder to drive. There must be a few sitting in sheds that don’t get out much these days.

The swap meet was also a great weekend. Thanks to all those who volunteer their time into making this weekend a great success. While a bit windy – it was warm and sunny when I was there on Saturday. I couldn’t help but notice how much different it looked

with the trees down.

The October Commercial noggin was a casual catchup at the Richmond Working Men’s club. 8 members turned up. I bought them a couple of bowls of fries to satisfy the hunger and they nursed their pints to keep them hydrated.

The November Commercial Noggin is to be at Brian Newbery’s workshop at 11 Desi Place in Hillsborough. Wednesday the 19th of October. Brian has a lovely collection of Early Chevrolet’s and other exotics. He’s a big fan of Veterans – so lots to see!

The Homestead run is on the 9th of November – it’s always a fun and popular run which I look forward to every year. Not that I see many commercials on that ruin – but you can bring them along!

I have a few options for other places coming up when it’s lighter in the evening, but Winter proves to be a struggle for options. If any club member has a venue or suggestion, please let me know.

Someone in the group will need to take ownership to co-ordinate the Commercial group Christmas get together please as I’ll be out of the country and unable to attend. Please contact me ASAP to let me know who will look after it – otherwise it won’t be happening.

See you out on the road,

Michael

MOTORCYCLE REPORT

Spring is almost finished, next month is SUMMER!!! Enjoy the great bike riding weather!! This month heralds the mad rush of events pre the silly season!

Past Events.

27th September – Fish & Chip Run. Great event, very passionate owner, excellent event. Pity that only 16 people took the opportunity to view this unique collection. Many thanks to Gerard of ProTranz for letting us be there!

4th - 5th October – Dunvegan Rally, Otago. I think about 11 or 12 made the ride south. Not a great weekend from the weather viewpoint, plenty of rain the whole weekend. The overnight stop on the rally was theAlexandra Camping Ground… Apparently those who went did enjoy the run.

8th October – Noggin Night. Talk about low key!! Less than a dozen were there…

10-12th October – Swap Meet. The motorcycle display of girder forked bikes was nothing short of outstanding! Many very complimentary comments from the public – interesting to note that some people were on the lookout for the display as a direct result of efforts the last 2 years. Thanks go to Joseph McClintock who organised the whole display, and Graham Barnett for his work on the display plaques. Also, many thanks to those who lent their bikes for the display, and those rostered people who helped on the days.

18th – 19th October – Girder Fork Rally. About 29 riders and two back-up teams left Auto Restorations bound for lunch at

Duvauchelle Pub for lunch, then onto the accommodation at Wainui Camp for the over night stayers. Two routes, short and long. See December Hub for a full report.

22nd October – Old Codger’s Run. Was delayed a week due to “too much traffic so close to the swap meet and the Girder Fork run the next weekend.” Unfortunately, the strong gale force winds that plagued the country 21st – 23rd played havoc with the run. Instead of the “Round the Gorges” run with lunch at the West Oxford Pub as was planned, the group of 16 bikes met at the Fools of Desire café in Rangiora, then drifted off to the Leithfield Pub for lunch. From all accounts everyone was happy with the run in spite of the high winds.

Future Events.

25th October – Fish & Chip Run. Labour Day weekend. Meet at PMH at 10.15 am for a 10.30 am departure. Rider’s choice on destination.

12th November – Noggin Night. We have an interesting garage raid on a prominent Canterbury Branch member organised, look out for the “Event Reminder” email.

19th November – Old Codger’s Run Keep an eye out for the email that will tell all…

29th November – MotorcycleAnnual Rally. (Note, no Fish & Chip Run this month.)Agood lunch time destination has been organised; Terrace Station, Hororata. As there is a charitable trust running the place there will be an entry fee to see the grounds etc – NOT the house! This place is the type that some non-entrants might like to visit and experience. There will be an evening meal and prize giving at Motorcycle Corner, taking the shape of a BYO meat and salad etc. to share. This is

an official M/C event, so there will be a back-up provided to collect stragglers… See last month’s Hub for more details and entry forms etc.

10th December – Noggin Night; Xmas Noggin. This will be a Christmas Dinner and social in The Barn, with a catered meal or something. The ham has been booked, and the committee will supply a range of saleds. Royce will ensure there are no duplications so there should be a good variety…

13th December – Fish & Chip Run – Last for the Year. Meet at The Peg Hotel, Belfast, for a North Canterbury run. The usual, meet at 10.15 am for a 10.30 am departure. If applicable, more info next month.

2nd January 2026 – Motorcycle New Years Run. More details next month.

10 – 12th April 2026, Jim Toohey Run. Just a heads up, this run will be over the Lewis Pass to Muchison then onto Ross on the West Coast. Bookings have been made for accommodation; look out for the details etc. in the New Year.

That’s it for now, Cheers,

Rally Holders are now available through Henry Little.
