The 1934 Model 355D was completely restyled and mounted on an entirely new chassis but used the same engine as in 1933. The Model 355 was divided into three series, the Series 10, 20 and 30. Bodies on the Series 10 and 20 were built by Fisher and on the Series 30 by Fleetwood, the latter shared with the Cadillac V-12 and V-16
Styling emphasized streamlining, including concealment of all chassis features except the wheels. Body construction was improved for better insulation against engine heat and reduction of engine, road and wind noise. Bumpers were a stylish but ineffective biplane design, mounted against telescoping springs. The grille was V-shaped and sloping, set into a painted shell. Although restricted use of chrome was a feature of the overall ornamentation, a chrome plated radiator shell was available as an option. Horns and radiator filler cap were concealed under the hood. Teardrop Guide Multibeam headlights were mounted on streamlined supports attached to the fenders.
Parking lamps were mounted on the headlight supports. Air foil shaped fenders were brought low over the chassis. The hood sills were high with the entire fender shape moulded into the radiator shell. Hoods extending nearly to the windshield carried shutter-type louvers in the side panel. Windshields were fixed and steeply sloping; 18 degrees on Fisher bodies, 25 degrees flat or a 29.5 degree V on Fleetwood bodies. Cowl vents opened toward the windshield, one vent on flat windshield bodies, two vents projecting through openings in the hood on V-shaped windshield bodies.
Bodies were 2.0in (51mm) lower than on previous models. Added passenger space in the front compartment was achieved by moving the hand brake lever to the left of the driver under the instrument panel. Rear fenders were air foil shaped and carried rear lights that matched the headlights. The gas tank filler was on the left side at the rear of the body, on Fleetwood bodies in the left rear fender.
All bodies featured beaver tail deck that completely covered the chassis. On Fleetwood bodies the spare was concealed under the rear deck, unless optional fender mounts were specified. Independent front suspension was introduced, called "knee-action". Engine horsepower increased to 120.

1934 Cadillac Series 355D
1993 Cadillac Allanté
1934 Cadillac Series 355D
The Cadillac Allanté Roadster is a two-door, two-seater luxury roadster marketed by Cadillac from 1987 until 1993. It used a Cadillac chassis and running gear with a body built in Italy by coachbuilder Pininfarina. It was expensive to produce with the complete bodies flown to Detroit from Italy for final assembly. Over 21,000 were built during its seven-year production run. It would become the first modern-era two-passenger Cadillac Roadster, and the first to wear the Cadillac name since the Cadillac Series 355 Roadster of the 1930s.
The 1993 model Allanté was offered in a single model configuration as a soft-top convertible priced at $59,975 (not including a mandatory $1,700 gas guzzler tax for vehicles sold in the United States). Options included the removable 60.5lb (27.4kg) aluminium hardtop, LCD digital instrument cluster ($495) in place of the standard analogue instruments, pearl coat paint option ($700, in Flax or Canyon Yellow, with Hawaiian Orchid added mid-year) and chrome squeeze-cast aluminium wheels. 1993 models received the significantly more powerful 4.6L (280.7cu in) NorthStar DOHC V8 engine rated at 295hp (220kw) at 5600rpm and 290ft lb (393nm) of torque at 4400rpm. A new unequal-length control arm rear suspension, shared with the Seville and Eldorado, was introduced. To offset increased costs, the 200-watt Bose stereo was dropped in favour of GM's Delco "Premium Symphony Sound System", the intelligent lighting module was eliminated; and 1993 models featured less expensive Lear-designed eight-way dual power seats, replacing the previous Recaro seats. Interior changes included the addition of an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and a revised shifter grip. Other model year changes included Road Sensing Suspension, an active damper management system, revised disc brakes, revised variable-assist power steering rack, deeper front spoiler, and single-piece side windows, which eliminated the stationary forward vent window.
The 1993 Allanté was also chosen as the 1992 pace car for the 76th Indianapolis 500, the pace car was driven by Bobby Unser. Three modified 1993 Allanté Pace Cars had only seat belts, lighted roll bar, and air intake modified from a stock production Allanté. The three Allanté Pace cars were provided for the race, as well as 30 stock 1993 Allanté's used as Festival/Pace Cars, and 58 stock 1992 Allanté Festival/Pace cars that were used by drivers and crews at the opening parade and the closing of the race. Al Unser Jr's 1993 Allanté Festival/Pace car was featured at both the 2012, and 2013 Keel's & Wheel's Concours D’Elegance in Seabrook, Texas, Bobby Unser was Grand Marshal in 2012, and Al Unser Jr was Grand Marshal in 2013. Production reached 4,670 for model year 1993 with 115 for export. Production reached 4,670 for model year 1993 with 115 for export—France (1), Austria (2), Belgium (5), Germany (5), Switzerland (6), Japan (11), and Canada (85)

Club Captains Report—Laurie's Lot—May—2023
Before our last meeting we held a bingo evening. It was a first for me to do this and from the feedback after the meeting and at our current meeting, we shall probably do it again. Any new ideas for holding this type of thing will be gratefully received.
On Saturday 1st April Bruce and Ken staged their twilight rally. Nineteen cars (I think) including one from Wairarapa driven by Mike and Jane.
We all assembled at Russell Park to receive our instructions before being sent off on our way. The route was through the back roads of CHB, South towards Dannevirke. The biggest memories for me as we drove through the course, was the damage done by Cyclone Gabrielle, some of the slips being massive. The course had to be altered a bit because of this.
Our first stop was at the Takapau RSA, where we had soup and buns, many commented later that it was the best soup and buns we have had.
Then it was on the road again to the Waipukurau Club for dinner and prize giving. Thank you to Bruce and Ken for another great run.
On Sunday 16th April, the HB Branch had a run organised to go to Dannevirke. Gloria and I met up with them in Waipukarau and travelled back down to Dannevirke to have lunch in the Domain with about fifty five others on the run. After lunch we visited Nick Boblea’s shed, a much improved set up. Then onto another shed, full of a variety of stationary engines.
The CHB Branch were invited to join the HB Branch on their April run. Gloria and I joined the HB Branch on there very enjoyable and interesting run.
It is still very early days and very difficult for a lot of people seriously effected by Cyclone Gabrielle, and for family and friends helping them with their recovery.
Have a good month

Sunday 1st April 2023—Twilight Run
Written by Jenny Halford
Organised by Bruce Poole and Ken Lyons, No pranks !!! thank goodness) this being the 1st April, the day CHB VCC had their twilight run. There was a good turnout of 23 cars and 43 people. Written instructions of the route were handed out, and we all set off at intermittent intervals from the sports complex in Waipukurau.
Our journey took us out on Farm Road and along Porangahau Road past the rustic old Wanstead church and now closed Wanstead Pub. Several more twists and turns and we headed out Flemington way.
Here the damage form Cyclone Gabrielle was starting to become evident, with high water marks around the creeks still visible and baleage high and dry on the banks. The cars had to negotiate between concrete blocks at the entrances to some of the bridges and quite large dropouts and slips on the Tourere Road. The only observer here to watch all these classics go by was a lonely old goat tethered on the side of the road.
Then it was up the very steep Mangahei Road with amazing views over the surrounding countryside. A bit further on we saw a pump shed hanging in mid air, showing us how high and swift the water had been. Into Dannevirke along Tipapakuku Road and on out through Makotuku/ Ormondville to the next destination, which was soup and buns at the RSA in Takapau. Nice to get out and stretch our legs as we headed in for a refreshing drink from the bar and then a choice of several soups, including tomato, chicken, minestrone and pumpkin, with lovely fresh buns – Delicious !!!
On to the second stage of the run and this took us out towards Onga Onga. Here we had a view of the most beautiful golden sunset over the ranges and there was also a large rainbow on display as well. This says it all about the strange weather patterns we have had lately.
It was now the end of our journey as we headed to the Waipukurau Club for our dinner. A lovely 2 course meal was served up before a draw for a gift from the table. A great selection of gifts kindly donated by Mitre 10 Waipukarau and others. Many thanks to Ken and Bruce for organising another great run.

2023 Twilight Rally— (Changes)?
NIGHT RALLY?—AFTERNOON?—TWILIGHT RALLY?
Bruce and Ken hope all those who attended the recent Afternoon /Twilight Rally enjoyed the event, and the hospitality, food and refreshments of our hosts at the Takapau RSA and Waipukurau Club. We would appreciate some feed-back from members regarding this event around its timing and format.
2023 Twilight event was earlier in the year than previous “Night Rally” events, with daylight saving ending on the Saturday night of our rally. With a starting time of 3.00pm we all arrived at our final destination around “Twilight”.
Distance travelled approx. 100 miles (165ks). Is this too short or too long?
Final destination dinner venue closer to home for most in Waipukurau. Does this suit most participants?
Rod McKenzie with his 1913 Ford Model T Roadster
The Soup and Buns stop was at the completion of the longer first stage at Takapau RSA and was as we understand, very well received by all. The soup and buns stop has always been a component of the “Night rally” during winter and often already dark for that stop.
Do you want a soup and buns stop regardless of time of year?
The last car away at the start was approx. 3.00pm.
Should we have an earlier or later start?
We have always been to a dinner venue at the conclusion of the Night rally. The caterers time frame for preparing and serving the meal often dictates the following:
START TIME—RALLY DISTANCE—ARRIVAL TIME AT FINAL DESTINATION
We have tried to keep the driving part straight forward with no stops checks etc to complicate your journey. A playing card has been issued at the start and spot prizes are drawn at random from a second pack.
Would you like more competitive component as part of the run?
Please let Bruce Poole or Ken Lyons know if you have any suggestions regarding the above points.

Bruce Poole's—”proposed Daffodil Rally”
(This is NOT the Cancer Society National Daffodil Day)
In September when the daffodils are blooming, I will be organising a Vintage only rally.
Hawkes Bay branch have returned to me a Trophy that I presented to them twelve years ago and it will be used for this event as the main trophy.
The proposed format would be a short non competitive run to a lunch venue for a lemonade and wine biscuits, followed by a BBQ lunch. The event would be open to all members (any car ) but only Vintage would be eligible for the major prize.
I would need approximate numbers interested by June to know if it is viable to organise.
Manawatu Branch held one last year with seventeen Vintage Cars and ten others participating. Please contact me if you would be interested in participating in this proposed event.

CHB Branch visited the property of Stuart and Janice Jones near Ong Onga.
Stuart opened up his very large shed and talked about his collection of David Brown and Fordson Tractors.
Janice entertained the ladies by showing them around her garden.
A very nice day, thank you to Stuart and Janice Jones for having us.

The David Brown tow tractors were used during World War 2. The David Brown Aircraft Tractor was a common sight on UK airfields throughout World War II and until the mid-1950’s, where they were used extensively for towing aircraft and bomb trolleys. It weighs nearly 4 tons and is powered by a David Brown 4cylinder, 2523cc, overhead-valve petrol engine delivering 37 bhp. They were painted Airforce Blue.

A past member of the CHB Branch of the VCC, Norman Charles Newport sadly passed away on Sunday 16th April 2023. Charlie has always been involved in the motor vehicle industry in one way or another, all of his life. He serviced a number of elderly vintage vehicles belonging to Central Hawkes Bay Vintage Car Club members from his garage in Peel Street Waipukarau. A business he sold when it came time to retire. He joined the CHB VCC Branch soon after he retired purchasing an Alfa Romeo Sport Car which he and his wife Jan, enjoyed taking part in events. He also enjoyed driving it and working on it with its challenging twin over-head camshaft engine. Charlie was a keen motor cyclist for many years with his several AJS and Matchless machines. Charlie was also a very successful speed boat racer, many great stories were told about those days.
Charlie was very proud of his military service and spoke fondly of a Mk3 Ford Zephyr he drove for the hierarchy whilst he was stationed in Malaya/Singapore.
Charlie loved his Model A Ford cars when he was young and living in Motueka. About four years ago Rod McKenzie spotted a Ford Model A Roadster for sale on Trademe, he took a print of the car up to show Charlie. It was the one Charlie had owned as a young man and he was able to print a copy of the ownership papers which showed in the early 1960,s Norman Charles Newport of Motueka was the owner. Charlie could hardly believe his eyes. It gave him quite a thrill. This was added to his many albums. We will all miss you Charlie.

MID WEEK RUN 10th 11th 12th OCTOBER 2023
Once again, Rod and Scarlett McKenzie are arranging a mid-week tour/run for mid-October. If you are coming along, you will need to arrange to stay two nights at the “Raceway Court Motel” which is at 20 Awahuri Road, on the outskirts of Feilding, being the nights of Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th October.
As this motel is very popular with truckies to stay, you are strongly advised to make your booking as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. We have spoken to the manager [Paul} who is aware we are coming as a group.
There is a restaurant on site which we will quite probably utilise one night. Scarlett and Rod will be heading across to the Manawatu to do some reconnaissance work in the next couple of months to check out some places of interest.
At this early stage, entrants will likely meet up in Woodville for morning tea/coffee on the morning of 10th October before heading across the “Saddle Road” to Ashurst. On Thursday 12th, the final day, we will have a picnic lunch [BYO] at a pretty garden where you can wander about and admire the plants, the homestead and other interesting things before heading back to CHB. There will probably be some costs involved at places we stop at, so expect to pay some fees so bring cash for that.
It would assist in the planning if you would advise us that you will be coming along as some places need numbers of people arriving on their doorstep. Email:
