The Grand Plan to Ban Petrol and Diesel—Sent in by John Foot (Reprinted with the kind permission of Advanced for Ford and Holden parts) April 2021 The government in the UK has announced plans to ban the sale of all petrol and diesel vehicles from 2040, with other countries like France having similar plans. The New Zealand government also wants to ban petrol and diesel vehicle sales by 2032 but have noted there may be some limitations to full-scale EV adoption. This would include car owners who only have access to on-street parking who therefore aren’t catered for by existing charging technology.

What’s the UK ban exactly?. The ban is to tackle nitrogen dioxide concentrations (Co2), therefore no new petrol or diesel cars or vans will be sold or registered on UK roads after 2040, the ban excludes hybrid vehicles. However, the banning of combustion vehicles from UK roads is not the only measure being taken. The move puts a heavy emphasis on local regional authorities to implement their own strategies for reducing Co2 levels and improving air quality in their areas. Ideas suggested are removing speed bumps to improve the efficiency of vehicles and retrofit buses for reduced emissions. An extra £255m has been promised to help see this vision put into action.

Why the UK ban?. These plans focus on just one thing, NO2 concentrations. Nitrogen Dioxide is a harmful gas released from the exhaust of diesel and petrol engines, which is linked to a wide range of health issues. Poor air quality is the biggest environmental risk to public health in the UK and Europe and the UK government is determined to take strong action in the shortest time possible.

What happens to cars after 2040?. Owning and driving a petrol or diesel car in the UK after the ban in 2040 will be ok. The restriction only affects new cars registered after that date. However, cars registered after 2040 will have to be a zero emissions vehicle. The aim of the ban is to give companies, councils, and people an official deadline for which to be prepared. By 2040, car manufacturers should be producing nothing but zero emissions vehicles for the UK and councils should have installed the necessary infrastructure to handle mass electric charging.

Magnificent Vintage Cars displayed at the Art Deco Rally 2021 Can it be done?. Since the announcement, debates and talks have flared with many questions such as. Does the national grid have the ability to handle the increased electrical load required to charge several million electric vehicles all at the same time? It’s estimated that the added peak load to the UK grid will be around 30 gigawatts of power; this is an increase of 50% over the current peak load (61GW). Suggestions are that the UK will become increasingly reliant on imported electricity, unless they scale production accordingly. In order for the UK to scale and meet the power requirements, the UK would need to build another 10,000 new wind turbines or 9.6 Nuclear Power stations or 400 Solar Farms.

What should you do?. The important thing to note in the short to medium term is that this doesn’t affect you yet. However, it could be something you make a plan for. The average car owner in New Zealand changes vehicles every 6 to 7 years, so you’ve got another 2 to3 vehicles before you need to make a decision. Up until then, pay attention to the EV or alternative fuels market. There may be subsidies coming for people purchasing EV’s. It’s not guaranteed that subsidies will be around for ever. Today, EVs only make sense in certain situations, they’re by no means a straight swap alternative for your current petrol or diesel vehicle unless you have incredibly deep pockets. An EV makes for a good commuter vehicle if you only travel a few miles to and from work. Not so good for farm vehicles, trade vehicles and high mileage travel.

Flight Lieutenant ‘Spud’Hayter—Reference to Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre James Chilton Francis Hayter was born in Timaru New Zealand on the 18th October 1917. Later moving North to attend Nelson College (1928 to 1934) He then spent a couple of years working on farms around Marlborough. In 1936 he took flying lessons at Omaka with the Marlborough Aero Club under Bill Willes and Noel Chandlers instruction. Hayter then joined the RNZAF in 1938 on a short service commission, earning his wing on the 19th April 1939. Hayter had a number of close calls, starting as an observer in a Vildebeeste Biplane. The first of these occurred when the aircraft was flying too low and struck the beach near Kaikoura, wiping off the undercarriage and damaging the propeller. A month later Hayter was on a swan-strafing run over Lake Ellesmere when the aircraft hit the water and sank. Hayter and the other two crew came close to drowning but all escaped with minor injuries. With war clouds gathering in Europe, Hayter answered the RAF’s call for pilots and sailed for England in July 1939. Posted to 98 Squadron at RAF Hucknall, flying the Fairey Battle, he once again became a victim of low flying but again escaped unscathed. His charmed life continued when posted to 103 Squadron in France to face the advancing German Army. This time his aircraft was shot down on approach to landing. Fairy Battles were suffering a severe mauling at this time. So the Squadron was withdrawn to England and Hayter was transferred to 615 Squadron and then 605 Squadron, equipped with Hurricanes. That month he was engaged in 14 combats and damaged a Ju88 and two Gf109s. Marlborough Pilot Jim Hayter immortalised at Omaka Aviation Heritage

Again in 1940 the young James Hayter escaped his burning Hurricane after he came off second best against a Bf109, high above the Kentish countryside during the Battle of Britain. He landed in the grounds of Great Swifts Estate, only to find himself challenged by a hay-fork wielding grounds man. Identified as RAF, he was immediately welcomed to the cocktail party back at the manor house, in bizarre contrast with the life and death struggle moments before, Hayter’s minor head wound was attended to by a female doctor who was one of the guests, the least one could do for an airman who was fighting for Britain's survival one would have thought. Hayter was no doubt nonplussed to receive a bill for the medical attention some time later. Hayter scored a Bf109 kill on the 1st December and was promoted to Flight Commander in February 1941 and posted to No 52 Operational Training Unit, Debden in May as an instructor. Two more crashes followed (same pupil, just two days apart). Posted back on operations in July 1941 with 611 Squadron and flying a Spitfire Mk Vbs he shot down another Bf109 but was forced to crash-land after suffering flak damage. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross DFC on 17th October 1941 after successes over three more Bf109s.

Flight Lieutenant ‘Spud’Hayter—Reference to Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre In March 1942 Hayter made a return to Hurricanes after being given command of 274 squadron in North Africa. Here he was shot down by an Italian Mc202, but amazingly returned the indignity when his attacker overshot. With his instructional skills once again required, he was posted to Turkey to train students on the Hurricane. Hayter took command of 74 Squadron in Iran and then Egypt in May 1943. Here the Squadron's Spitfires undertook sorties over Crete and in September a number of fighters operated from the Island of Kos. They were caught on the ground by Junkers Ju88s and a Spitfire MK.1X few days late the Germans over-ran the airfield forcing Hayter and four others to escape to the surrounding hills. Evading the Germans for several days, Hayter killed a sheep with his bare hands for food before they made their escape by boat, eventually returning to the Squadron. In April 1944 No. 74 Squadron returned to the UK and Hayter flew patrols over the D-Day beaches with the Spitfire MK.1X. Following some engagements with the V-1 Flying Bombs the Squadron was transferred to become part of the 2nd tactical Air Force and moved to the Continent in August. Hayter continued as C.O. until he was posted to Milfield for a course at the Fighter Leaders School. He received a Bar to his DFC in January 1945. In mid-August 1945 Hayter sailed back to New Zealand, having achieved an impressive record of service. He undertook 535 operational flights, was shot down four times and suffered 10 crashes (eight during the war). He is credited with five kills plus one unclaimed, one probable, three damaged and one unknown. He later remarked that he wasn’t much of a shot so he had to armourers set his guns to cone at 150 yards (137m) in effect, point bland range Jim Hayter returned to farming after his return from WW2. He passed away in October 2006 aged 89 at Takaka, near Nelson.

There will be a visit to a hotel for soup and buns during the event. Dinner and prize giving will be held at the end of the run in a licensed venue somewhere in Central Hawke’s Bay. You are advised to fuel up before the start. Please bring a torch.

History of the MANGAKURI CHURCH in CHB The Church was built in 1887 by the Rev, Archdeacon Samuel Williams for the staff of the station when the property was 21,000 acres. His nephew, George C, lived in the nearby homestead, now Castle as manager. Employees donated the bell. Over the years the building deteriorated. With thanks to the Historic Places Trust for guidance, Massey students when they were working in the Napier office of the Ministry of Works and the Waipukurau Construction Company, the building was restored in 1979. The century old Totara piles were removed and replace with concrete. Some weather boards were replaced and new shingles were put on the roof. For the first time the church was wired for electricity. May 20th and 21st 2021—Trip to Makoura Lodge—Organised by Keith and Jean Hopping It was great to see a good show of hands of those that are interested in having a couple of days at the Lodge. Just to recap for those that have missed the build up or were not at the meeting. We are putting together a two day event on May 20/21. This will start with a mid morning gathering at a Cafe’ in Woodville on Thursday 20th. After a bit of morning tea we will drive on to Makoura lodge in the Rangitiki (about 3/4hr drive time). The venue consists of motel style accommodation and two very Makoura Lodge well presented cottages that have private bed rooms with shared amenities. All within close proximity to the lodge building that encompasses dining room lounge seating large open fire and bar. A large projected TV is at our disposal for viewing our old home movies or what ever. After checking in and sorting out our rooms a buffet lunch will be served in the dining room. From there on in its just kick back and enjoy what the venue has to offer. Bar, Clay bird shooting, Hole in one golf. Archery. Axe throwing. maybe just kick back and relax on one of the big sofas by the fire, or cheer on those that have opted to do the activities. The evening meal will be served as a buffet after which there will be a prize giving of sorts before getting into a bit of silly fun around the BAR and lounge with member participation activities. (still in the planning stage ). Then after a good nights sleep and freshen up breakfast will be served in the dining room, again this will be buffet. We then pack up and head for home mid morning with options open for cafe’ lunch stops enroute. Cost is $185 per person ($370 per couple) and includes the three meals and your accommodation (Optional $50 per head for the clay bird golf axe archery package) PAYMENT WILL BE YOUR Responsibility at check in. You can also run a bar tab or pay as you go for drinks. You are welcome to bring your own alcohol to your rooms and around the grounds but a corkage fee will apply to meal times in the dining room. However the bar is well stocked for your convenience. Complimentray Instant coffee and tea is available at all times in the dining room on self help basis while the real deal coffee is available during bar hours at a cost. To keep it simple I will pay the 25% booking deposit which Makoura Lodge will refund to me when you have all paid your bill. (or not if you don’t, just saying) With a bit of help from those coming along I’m sure we can make this a great couple of days of fun. The roads enroute are all sealed and quite picturesque. October 13th, 14th, 15th 16th 2021—Extended Mid-Week Run for CHB VCC Organised by Rod and Scarlet McKenzie

Scarlett and Rod are putting together another mid-week trip. This time into the bowels of the Central North Island area in mid-October. We will be away for three nights and four days of motoring with a few interesting visits and things to see and do. This run will obviously entail some fairly full days of motoring [possibly around 300km per day!], so it will be more suitable for P45, P60’s and P80’s vehicles, but that is not to say that you shouldn’t drive your Vintage or PV vehicle on the run.

Many of the roads we will travel on have been traversed by us in the past in our Ford Model T, so most entrants could bring any vehicle they like, providing they know it is up to the journey. You will need to have a good road map or electronic GPS at hand when you start the run. And it will be cheaper if you pack a picnic lunch in the car for our first lunch stop before you leave home. The run will be in the form of a “Tour” and will be non-competitive. Visits will include shopping and sightseeing in Bulls, Marton, Hunterville, Wanganui, Jerusalem, Pipiriki, Raetihi, and Horopito, and a drive up to Turoa ski fields. VEHICLE IDENTITY CARDS (UPDATE) January 2021 There has been some more minor changes to the Vehicle Identity Card application forms. The forms that you have or are now using could you please make sure that the date in the top right hand corner (below the page number) is as follows: Pages 1-2-3 are dated 09/2019, page 4 dated 01/2021, Page 5 dated 09/2019 and pages 6 and 7 are dated 10/2020. The main change is that now we require photographs of all available identifying serial numbers i.e. Chassis/frame, engine, body, Vin and any o other identifying features and copies of any paper work that is relevant to your vehicle. There is only one photograph/copy of the above required but we still require 3 photographs of the finished vehicle. If a car or commercial Vehicle please take the photograph on ¾ view and a motorcycle taken side on. Chairman's Report—May 2021 It looks as if my notes in the last month's magazine have finally paid off as entries for the twilight/night rally started flying in and with 3 weeks before closing date 40 people had sent entries in and for that I thank you. It makes catering plans so much easier. At the writing of this report we have 50 people registered for the night and entries have closed. The soup and bun part of the rally we can take more but no more for dinner. Your response has been great. Another big thank you for those who have indicated to go on Keith and Jean Hoppings run to Makoura Lodge in May. A lot of effort has been put in by the organisers for this different type of run and overnight stay. As most of you will be aware a mag wheel on the Hillman was found to be cracked on a WOF check and at this stage another wheel has not been found, so a hunt for a couple of steel wheels has been started. Keith hopping found a wheel in Tirau but it was half an inch wider than the original wheel size. He has got onto a car in Masterton sitting in a paddock but the owner can not be contacted at the moment. I am grounded. On a more serious note our secretary Ken Lyons has indicated that he would like to stand down as secretary. When I took over from Lynn Cross as Chairman it was to be for a year, so the club is on the lookout for both positions plus other positions for the committee if needed. Our AGM is on June 15th TUESDAY not Wednesday at the Waipawa bowling club. Give this matter some serious thought, all the help is available to do the job. Planning is underway for the National Cancer run 22nd August 2021 with Kaye Carswell and Janet Weaver on the case. The previous run was a great success and a large number of prizes from local businesses were obtained. If you can help give Kaye or Jannet a ring, this will be very much appreciated. After last months long report this one is a little shorter and I still need to make time to travel back to Pongaroa with the repaired photo frame. Keep safe out there, safe travelling on the roads and we will see you on the 8th May at the Night Rally.

Rod’s Rattling's—May 2021 There isn’t a lot to report on this month as there has been very little going on for our members to exercise their vehicles with this past month or so. The CHB Model T Run that John Cleland arranged was well supported by local owners and numbers from out of the district. The most fun it seemed, was when the right front wheel fell off one of the cars away out on Blackhead Rd. The owner had not allowed for the fact that you don’t put a left hand thread stub axle on the right hand side of the car [it is for the left hand side]. The bearing tightened up until it could take no more, seized and broke the stub axle off turning the car into a three-wheeler, which wasn’t the best idea, so it was left on the side of the road to be picked up by the owner and “Tail-end Charlie” on the way back to town. Most of the other drivers stopped to help lift it onto the trailer. The lady navigators really enjoyed the sight and sounds of 10 or 12 gentlemen with 10 or 12 different ideas of how to get it on the trailer. “All chiefs and no Indians” one of them observed, to much laughter from the 10 or 12 ladies. However, it was recovered successfully and they all drove on to the next stop. Several local owners of Model A Fords attended a major Rally for these ubiquitous vehicles in Gisborne over Easter weekend which was very successful I believe with about 120 vehicles attending. Bruce Poole and Ken Lyons have the “Annual Twilight Rally” in hand with the route planned and the stops for our meals all set to go. You should have had your entry in well before now if you intend going! Keith and Jean Hopping have been putting a lot of effort in to the run they are planning to take the branch to “Makoura Lodge” later this month. Again, you should have advised them by now that you intend going. It should be quite a lot of fun and very social. Lynn and Sandra Cross are hoping to take us to Haumoana sometime in June for the day with the opportunity to inspect a rather tasty collection of motor vehicles. Things are still happening around the sheds of some vintage and veteran car owners in the district. Keith Hopping has been working on an MGB Roadster for a family member, as well as sorting out a steering box issue with his late 1950’s Humber 80. Mike Perry, one of our Hastings domiciled members, who we see out from time to time with their 1904 Napoleon is making good progress re-restoring his 1929 Plymouth Tourer. This is a car he exchanged for 2 bottles of whisky in the early 1970’s and has driven it all over the country since initially getting it on the road in the late 1970’s. Another veteran owner, Digby Young in Hastings, is making a fabulous job of restoring his 1908 [or thereabouts] Vulcan, a very rare car in New Zealand. A couple of weekends ago, I went with Gavin and Vivienne Harris to the “Coach House Museum” in Feilding where a crew of ancient mechanics were showing the public how to put a Model T Ford together and make it run. Once the job was done, it was disassembled for the next try. Gavin and Viv had loaned the “vehicle” to the guys down there to work with, and it garnered considerable attention from the public. If you are ever in the Feilding area, try and make time to visit the “Coach House” as it is well worth a visit. Kaye Carswell and Janet Weaver are making good progress on arranging the “VCC National Day Cancer Run” for the CHB Region being held on August 22nd. They will likely need some help on the day, and maybe beforehand too, so if you can help, contact them.

It was a really cool time in Waipukurau in more ways than one. Our Friday night get together which is a BYO dinner and drinks was held at Gavin and Vivienne Harris’s lovely home. They had gone to a lot of trouble and by putting up a gazebos and setting out tables and chairs for thirty or so entrants. After dining royally on various things from, Pizza to Chinese takeaways the men headed over to the open shed like bees heading back to their hives. A few of us had a lovely wander around Gavin and Vivienne’s new garden, admiring their landscaping. I came away with a succulent for my little hoard at home.

A problem came as the evening temperature cooled considerably with Vivienne pulling out blankets for some of us, “Excuse me” we are in the Hawkes Bay and it was meant to be warm. All week I had watched the weather and the temperatures were in the 20’s. Some of us just didn’t have enough warm clothes on! The men were dragged from that fabulous shed and we all headed back to our accommodation. Saturday morning was clearish, possibly rain later, but it was again quite cool and in our Model T that means thermals. We always have our wet weather bag with us in the T and it was plundered for all sorts of gear, beanies, scarves and gloves which were missing, found them later, I had had a ‘boys look’!!. From start to finish it was a fabulous journey, lots of metal roads, but if you take it carefully Lizzie loves them. We only did the Model T waltz a couple of times. “You know, when she bounces over the ruts sideways”. One thing I did find out on discussing this phenomenon with Fiona Miller is that there is a tune called “The Naughty Tin Lizzie Waltz” which was written by a Kiwi, I have warned her to get the music out John and Margaret Cleland and start practising as I would really love to hear it. Writing a tune for it instead of swearing at the driver was much more seemly one would say!. Just before lunch they stopped us at the foreshore of Porangahau Beach. What a fabulous place and amazingly under developed. Beautiful pristine sand for as far as the eye could see. We loved it. From there we retraced our steps back to the Porangahau Country Club (golf course) for a delicious lunch provided by locals as a fund raiser for the club. While at lunch we discovered that two cars had got misplaced and that one of our number had lost a front wheel. Luckily no injuries, just a good bit of a shock I think. The misplaced members did catch up and a plan was hatched for us all to go and retrieve the car with the missing wheel and get it onto Tail end Charlie’s trailer as it was just off the return rally route.

2021 Model T Rally held in Central Hawkes Bay—written by Faye Douglas—Hamilton member After finishing our lovely lunch, we were all back on the road back through Porangahau Village to visit ‘The Iron Museum’, no people this wasn’t a heap of rusty bits of cars, it was actually a museum full of ‘Irons’, you know the getting creases out of clothes type irons. What an absolute eye opener, there are over 700 items in the collection. The owners of this amazing place Hans and Jude welcomed us and Hans gave us a quick talk about what we were seeing and then answered dozens of questions. On leaving there we were given two options Gavin and Vivienne Harris to get back to Waipukurau, one challenging and the other not, No-one took the challenge as we needed everyone’s help to get the broken Lizzie back on the trailer anyway. This mission was accomplished with great camaraderie and I don’t think I actually heard one swear word. There might have been a few muttered but just quietly. Deidre videoed it on her phone and there were heaps of photos taken. Wonderful teamwork from those involved. Congratulations all. On the rally back we were diverted to the lovely Homestead and garden of Waikareao Station. The home of Steve and Trish Anstis, who are undertaking renovation and restoration of both the homestead and it’s gardens. What a lovely place, many thanks to them for their time and good luck with the task ahead. The rest of the journey back was without incident just the usual amazing Hawkes Bay scenery and a damned annoying wind. We all made it home in time to go to dinner at the Waipukurau Club. Our promised after dinner entertainment (which was its usual high standard) was “Us “. The whole shebang. Each table of six were presented with a tray of odds and sods including vivid markers, electrical tape, kebab sticks , craft knives and a pile of Peter and Suzanne McCool vegetables. We were then given half an hour to produce a car capable of going down a prebuilt slide type racetrack and the winner was the one that went the greatest distance. It was hilarious and unbelievable that we produced six totally different looking cars. The only thing any of them had in common was carrot wheels, enormous fun. Sunday morning found us back at the start ready to travel to brunch. We were informed that we were retracing our steps from a previous rally that had been in thick fog. This time we got to see the amazingly awesome scenery. It was clear but quite a dull day so we could see for miles. A photo just could not do it justice. Our journey took us in a large loop back into Waipukurau township for brunch at the home of Eva and Ian Gollan which was a fundraiser for Red Cross. What a delicious spread. Many thanks to all involved. After brunch it was back to the motel to put Lizzie on the trailer and the journey homeward. Our grateful thanks to John and Margaret, Rod and Scarlet, Gavin and Vivienne and all their helpers. We had a really enjoyable time as always. 14 Rod and Carol Naylor

Moved: Kaye Carswell Sec: Iain Gollan MATTERS ARISING: Nil REPORTS: The following reports were read and the reports are as follows. CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Annual General Meeting 2020. This is my third and final report as Chairman. I must say it has been a pleasure and a delight holding this position. The Branch runs like a well-oiled machine and we are almost embarrassed by our riches, both financial and personnel. Membership is good and participation is high both in meetings and runs. This year has been testing but I believe the right decisions have been made over the Covid 19 matters and here we are again, happy as can be. The Committee as a whole has worked nicely and as a unit. The key positions on committee are the secretary, the treasurer and club captain/delegate. In these posts we have near perfection with Ken Lyons, Kaye Carswell and Rod McKenzie. Off committee we have more important people – in Bulletin Editor Joyce Calder, who does such a wonderful job on the “Bleat” at next to no cost, thanks to the wonders of e-mail and a few hand deliveries. Thank you, Joyce. Eva Gollan, who this last year, has organised meals and venues – well done and thank you, Eva. My wife Sandra has sent out a surprising number of get well cards. She co-ordinated our very successful 2019 Cancer Rally and has acted as Publicity Officer. John Foot, with the help of Charlie Newport, has continued doing VIC applications and valuations, and Scarlett McKenzie has organised raffles many and varied. Thank you all. This year only one is standing down from Committee, Ruth Parker who has done two years and was good value with the Cancer Rally. Thank you Ruth. We have a nominee for that vacancy. We are in a bit of a bind regarding a new chairman, but that was foreseen last year, so we have a nominee to recycle and a commitment from a member to take over at the next AGM. Further thanks go to Club members who have organised runs, rallies and functions all have been enjoyable. In conclusion, I thank all members for their participation, support and camaraderie. This 2019 to 2020 period is my second year serving our CHB VCC as your secretary. It was also my third year as a member of the CHB VCC so I still consider myself new to Vintage car Club activities. The CHB VCC currently has 116 financial members. We have among our membership many long serving and knowledgeable people that I have been able to ask for advice when required. I hope I have been able, with their help,to do a satisfactory job for our membership. Recording and writing the minutes of our Committee meetings and our Club nights has been possible and made easier for me with gadgets such as the tablet to record and playback dialogue from the meetings so I can write a true and accurate record. However I am not able to write shorthand notes as I have seen Sandra Cross do during meetings of the Committee for the Daffodil rally for Cancer. I do appreciate that members use our sound system when they speak at our club night meetings. I know 18 that is the only way that the recording device will pick up dialogue from the back of the room, unless it is Rod McKenzie or Bruce Poole speaking. continued

My other function of receiving information from National Office and other VCC Clubs and forwarding on what is relevant to our membership, or individuals when it pertains to their role within the club seems to be working ok. I hope as recipients of these communications it is working for you also. Please don’t hesitate to contact me directly if there is something I can do for you to assist with communication to our membership of any Club activities such as runs etc. Again technology such as the email programme with all members email details logged in make it possible to quickly and efficiently forward on to individuals or the wider membership. Very little of the Clubs communications arrive, or are sent by ordinary post. All VCC of NZ activities , and all other Club newsletters can be accessed by any member by just logging into the VCC of NZ website. There is also a Facebook page for those familiar with using that Social media platform. For this reason I do not bombard our membership with every communication or newsletter I receive from other clubs. If I did, I think you might consider putting me on your blocked sender list. I have enjoyed the opportunity to work with Lynn during his term as your Chairman and I thank him for all his support and guidance with my role as Secretary. I hope, as no doubt you all do that the Covid 19 lockdowns and restrictions do not have to be implemented again. I am sure we will all be looking forward to being able to participate in our Club activities that are beginning to fill our calendar for the remainder of this year. Check your Bleat. CHB VCC Club Captain’s Report for 2020 AGM The early months of the Branch year were a lot of fun for our participating members, however, since the 15 th March there have been few events for our members to be involved with due to the COVID pandemic. No matter, there have been two or three local runs more lately for us to air our vehicles on the roads of CHB, and it is rather nice to be getting “back into it”. And some have used the quiet times to work on their vehicles. All the events throughout the year[until mid-March] have been well supported and have been well documented with reports in the “Bleat” from one of the various participants from the run, and it gives us all an interesting perspective of something those people have enjoyed about the run. It also gives our “Bleat” editor Joyce something to fill the pages with. I have had several very favourable comments from members from other branches about our magazine and what we have done in the branch, so do keep sending Joyce your articles and photographs as the magazine is seen and read nationwide. Some of the highlights of the year have been the car-show and the run out to Chapelwick at Poranghau for the “Cancer Daffodil Day”, the tour to Te Kuiti and beyond, and the summer run out to Herbertville. We all “dodged a bullet” with Joyce and Gary’s run the “Silky Oak Chocolate Factory” in March when a couple of bus-loads of tourists from the “Ruby Princess” cruise ship arrived and mingled with us as we were leaving. Thankfully, we all missed getting a dose of COVID from them! Now we are getting back into the swing of things we could do with some more volunteers to co-ordinate runs for the coming next twelve months. Make it complicated or simple, it is up to you. But each of you must have an idea or two that can be built on for something to entertain us all for a few hours. Thank you to each of the members who have put together some entertainment for us this past year, and we look forward to whatever the next 12 months hold for our branch of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand. Another thing that would be useful for the branch would be to have somebody dedicated to making reports, and downloading photographs, etc to the Vintage Car Club group page on “Facebook”. If you haven’t seen this initiative, then you ought to go in for a look as it is very interesting and worthwhile I believe. Once again, my sincere thanks to my very supportive P.A., Scarlett, who guides me, and has organised the raffle prizes each month for our monthly meetings. Look out for some new ideas she is cooking up. It is a very costly exercise to send your branch delegate, me, to the Executive and National AGM meetings for all branches throughout the year, so I hope you read and get something out of the reports I have written for you, the members of the branch. OK, what does it cost, I hear you ask? It cost the club over $1200 to get me to Greymouth and back to attend the National AGM last year, and a lot of time and work on my part, so I sincerely hope you, as members of the branch, are able to get something of value out of what I report back. Joyce was able to address the meeting and present her report verbally. 2019 was extremely busy with the arrival of twin granddaughters Bella and Isla in January 2019. I spent the first six weeks of their lives with them in the North Shore Hospital Auckland; this meant travelling 80ks a day to do this. It was all very trying at times however we are please to say they are both doing very well. They are now 16 months old and going to day care. Who would have thought 2020 would have unfolded the way it did. We are very lucky the Covid 19 epidemic was managed as well as it was in NZ. For most of us the lockdown period was a very positive time with family. For me it was a catch up on some home maintenance. The Bleat is still ticking along, haven’t heard any complaints yet! Just keep the articles coming in as most of the Bleat content is very dependent on someone participating in club runs and activities to take some photo’s and write a short report. A very big thank you to those members who are regularly contributing articles. Our club has great members who have organised some great car runs to places we would not normally get to if not organised through our car club. Thank you all. An electronic copy of the Bleat is sent to all club members, sponsors and head Office in Christchurch to put on the Web-site, although they are not happy with anything over 5MB at the moment. She said John joined the Auckland branch in 1985, serving on committee and as Club Captain. When John retired in 2001 and moved to Cambridge he transferred to Waikato branch also serving on committee and as Club Captain. During his time with Waikato John and Shirley together organised many rallys and club runs. In 2008 John was elected onto the Management Committee of VCC of NZ and also served as Nth Island Club captain until 2012. Since joining CHB VCC John has served on committee and is currently providing his expertise as VIC/VID co-coordinator. Diane said both John and Shirley have provided a huge contribution to organising and participating in VCC events including at least six Vero International rallies and many Nth Island Club Capt events. Diane then thanked John and Shirley for their huge contribution and presented John his 35year badge. John then spoke of Diane's involvement with VCC of NZ , having joined Waikato Branch on 1 st March 1984. She was elected Branch secretary at 1985 AGM. In 1986 Diane transferred to Hawkes Bay Branch serving as Branch Chairperson for 5 years and also becoming involved in organisation of ART DECO week. At 2006 National AGM Diane was elected to the Management Committee a position she held for 9 years. In 2011 she was presented with Presidential Award. Diane transferred to CHB VCC in 2011. She chaired the organising committee for the 2012 Vero International rally. Diane was elected National President at the 2015 AGM. John concluded by congratulating Diane on her huge contribution to VCC activities while also having a full time job. John then presented Diane her 35yr membership badge. Diane then acknowledged all the support and assistance she has had from her husband Geoff. She said that she could not have achieved so much without him, and thanked him with great sincerity. John then asked if he should carry on with his contribution for CHB VCC with the article in Idle Torque pages of the Beaded Wheels magazine. The members were happy for John to continue with this and Lynn thanked John for his ongoing contribution on behalf of the CHB VCC. GENERAL BUSINESS: Branch Levy The branch levy was discussed briefly and it was agreed that the levy would remain unchanged for 2020-2021 at $20.00 for single and $23.00 for joint membership. Moved: Keith Hopping Sec: Chris Murphy Scarlett McKenzie then spoke about the Club night raffles. She suggested that the members could consider a new format for the raffles where a ticket would be chosen by each member present at no cost and the winning number drawn would be paid a cash reimbursement for the meal charge for one person. This would be funded by the CHB VCC. Lynn then asked the members for comment it appeared that no one objected to 22 the proposal.
