Health Science

Prepare for a rewarding career in healthcare through Valparaiso University’s accelerated, interdisciplinary health science program — a strong foundation for graduate study and meaningful service in the health professions.

Valparaiso University’s health science program prepares students to enter the healthcare field or pursue advanced professional degrees in just three years. The program blends coursework in anatomy, physiology, chemistry, psychology, and other topics in healthcare with a focus on service, compassion, and leadership. Students gain a comprehensive understanding of health systems and human well-being while developing the analytical and communication skills needed to thrive in both clinical and non-clinical roles.

Taught by dedicated faculty mentors, this versatile degree provides a clear pathway to Valpo’s master of science in the accredited physician assistant studies (MSPA) and the accredited entry-level occupational therapy doctorate (OTD) programs, while also preparing students for further study in physical therapy, athletic training, and other allied health fields. With strong academic support and individualized guidance, students graduate ready to make a meaningful impact in the healthcare profession.

EXPERT MENTORSHIP

Valpo’s health science faculty help students connect academic learning with real-world healthcare experience. Guided by professors who bring expertise across clinical practice, public health, and interprofessional healthcare education, students receive personal support throughout their three-year journey. Faculty assist students in identifying professional pathways, developing leadership skills, and preparing for graduate studies — including Valpo’s physician assistant (MSPA), public health (MPH), healthcare administration (MHCA), and occupational therapy (OTD and DrOT) programs — or successful careers in healthcare and beyond.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

Real-world exposure is woven throughout the health science curriculum. Through three required summer field experiences, students observe and participate in a range of healthcare environments — from hospitals and clinics to community health organizations. Courses provide direct exposure to patient care, population health, and ethical decision-making. These real-world experiences help students discover their professional interests, build practical skills, and graduate prepared to lead and serve in a rapidly changing healthcare landscape.

“Gaining an education at Valpo and specifically in the College of Nursing and Health Professions has shaped me in more ways than I could imagine. The professors are really passionate about their teaching and want to help students get through challenges and come out successful on the other side. Hands-on collaborations and simulations helped me learn real-life skills and gain experiences that better prepared me. It has been very rewarding to learn beside some amazing students and faculty and grow as an individual.”
