Oki, and welcome to the University of Lethbridge
Our University’s Blackfoot name is Iniskim, meaning Sacred Buffalo Stone. The University of Lethbridge acknowledges and deeply appreciates the Siksikaitsitapii peoples’ connection to their traditional territory.

We, as people living and benefiting from Blackfoot Confederacy traditional territory, honour the traditions of people who have cared for this land since time immemorial. The Blackfoot Confederacy comprises the Kainai, Piikani, Amskapiipikani, and Siksika First Nations. The city of Lethbridge is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region III.
Awahsinii [awah-ksinee] is Blackfoot for territory Siksikaitsitapii [sik-si-kay-tsida-be] is Blackfoot for Blackfoot Confederacy
We recognize the diverse population of Indigenous Peoples who attend the University of Lethbridge and the contributions these Indigenous Peoples have made in shaping and strengthening the University community in the past, present, and in the future.

For the Blackfoot People, niitoyis (the tipi) is the heart of a community. Like a tipi where teaching and ceremonies happen, the University of Lethbridge is where knowledge transfer takes place. We invite you into our tipi which is home to our family of students, alumni, employees and friends.
Think of the tipi door which opens to the east to meet the rising sun on the start of a new day. Starting university is a new beginning. As the four keystone poles combine and intersect in this place that connects the living world with the spirit world, we want you to reach for the stars and skies during your time here.
At Iniskim, we all share stories, teachings and wisdom to broaden our perspectives. We connect deeply and see clearly. I’ve been with this institution for many years as a student, faculty, advisor and now as vice-provost. Here, we value relationships, belonging, access and respect differences in culture and languages. Everyone is welcome.
You’ll find many people on campus who are here to support you along the way, whether you need financial and academic support, Elders guidance or cultural programs and initiatives.
I hope that your path to higher learning allows you to leave as graduates where you can bring your knowledge back to your communities. We want you to move forward in a good way. Honour your past, embrace your present and let’s see what a brave future informed by deep perspectives looks like.
Iikaisskini (Low Horn), Dr. Leroy Little Bear (BASc ’74, DASc ’04) Vice-Provost, Iniskim Indigenous Relations
In 2002, Elder Bruce Wolf Child gifted the name Iniskim to ULethbridge.
“Every place has a name. Every person has a name. Everything has a name…I gave this place the Blackfoot name — Iniskim.
Long time ago, there were warriors travelling across the river. They sat down to rest. There was a young boy with the group. He saw a vision. Something on a rock. It was an old man with a headdress with ochre paint on his face. He asked the other warriors if they could see it, but only he could. The older warriors explained that it was his vision, his dream and told to make an offering. He did and continued to make an offering every time he visited the rock.
In Blackfoot, we have Buffalo rock. It’s a legend way back in our buffalo days. One day, one year, our people lost our buffalo and were struggling. Nothing to eat. Two boys were out hunting, and they were walking along the river. They heard a lady singing. They went up to the cliffs and found this rock and they knew there was a meaning behind it so they brought it home. That night, when they went to sleep, a woman appeared and told the boy ‘I know what you are after, I will show you where your buffalo are, but you have to do something for me. Take me, take care of this rock, feed me, and sing me this song.’ They did and she took the boys and pointed down a valley and said, ‘there’s your buffalo.’ We call this fortune rock.
That’s how I gave the name — by putting these two stories together. Our children come to school here and they get their fortune, their life. They feed the rock, they do the work, they accomplish — they succeed.
If you look at the university at the side of the coulees, it has the same shape of the buffalo rock. The Blackfoot word Iniskim means sacred buffalo stone or holy rock.”

Our commitment:
We have woven Indigenous culture into the fabric of our University since we opened our doors in 1967. Here, you’ll find community, support and success along with enriching programming, teaching and research.

safe and welcoming home away from home.
We’re focused on providing you with the support, guidance and cultural connection you need to succeed at ULethbridge.
We hold several events throughout the year in the Gathering Centre to bring students together — from Halloween and Valentine’s Day activities to feasts and various activities for Indigenous Awareness Week and Truth and Reconciliation Week.

In the Blackfoot language, Iikaisskini [ee-gus-gah-knee] means “low horn”, representing the charging buffalo. The Gathering Centre is named after Dr. Leroy Little Bear, one of Canada’s most respected Indigenous academic leaders.
The Gathering Centre is where we share stories, teachings and wisdom. It's a place for ceremony, smudging and celebration to set your path forward in a good way.
Together, we ignite pride and inspire leadership.

The Indigenous Wellness Initiative, Ayaahkimina (encouraging you to try hard), provides support and resources to foster your well-being.
We can help connect you to Elders and Knowledge Keepers, provide counselling and mental health referrals, share resources and offer support.
Elders from local Indigenous communities are on campus regularly to share knowledge and traditional practices, offer guidance and support, and for storytelling, cultural teaching and spiritual mentoring.
Faculties and departments on campus may host special Elder sessions throughout the academic year. Indigenous Elder support is available to any ULethbridge student, staff or faculty from any culture.

Come for a visit — stay for a degree. Experience your future at ULethbridge.
Iniskim Future Students Day (IFSD) is your all-in-one introduction to life at ULethbridge.
Take a guided campus tour, meet professors, and hear directly from current Indigenous students about their time at ULethbridge.
The best part? You can apply for admission on the spot!

Whether you’re just starting to think about post-secondary or ready to take the next step, IFSD is here to help you move forward with confidence.

“I have professors who have changed how I view the world and think of my learning. They inspired me and encouraged me to dream big and strive for the things I want because I am capable of that, and I am not limited to just following a path to get a job and work as soon as I’m out of school.”

“I did not grow up surrounded by my Blackfoot culture. Since starting at ULethbridge, I have slowly gotten in touch with myself through cultural experiences. I’ve been able to study both traditional plant knowledge and Western science botanical identification and collection techniques. I feel that attending ULethbridge, and first participating in the Indigenous Student Success Certificate (ISSC) was one of the best decisions of my life.”
Jesse Clarke

As part of our commitment to reconciliation and removing barriers to post-secondary education, we waive the application fee for all self-identifying Indigenous students (First Nations, Métis or Inuit).
If you’re a Canadian Indigenous student applying to undergraduate programs, your application fee will automatically be waived when you self-identify on your application.
Beginning January 2026, applicants who complete an Attestation of Indigenous Identity Form – Students will make the applicant eligible for consideration for any dedicated seats for Indigenous students in the program they have applied for (if applicable). If the form is not received, then the applicant will be considered for traditional admission to the program they have applied to.
Any student who has not self-declared Indigenous ancestry at time of application or who has self-declared Indigenous ancestry but not submitted the Attestation of Indigenous Identity Form –Students, will be encouraged to do so at any point along their student journey where they wish to access opportunities available to Indigenous Canadian students where attestation is required: for example, scholarships, bursaries and awards or work-integrated learning opportunities.
Submission of the form after the start of classes, does not make available retroactive opportunities: for example, admission in a program or previous awards.

ULethbridge tuition and fees are the lowest of the major universities in Alberta. Domestic undergraduate tuition and fees are $8,386, based on a full-time course load in a Bachelor of Arts program.
Honouring connections. Supporting success.
In recognition of the traditional territory of the Siksikaitsitapii, which spans the Canada–US border, we offer special tuition support for students from Aamskapi Pikuni (Blackfeet Nation, Montana).
Eligible students will pay the same tuition rate as Canadian residents. The difference between international and domestic tuition is covered through a scholarship, making post-secondary education more accessible for Blackfeet students.

If you are a Band member of a First Nation, you may have access to federal funding for your education through your local Band office.
Each First Nation is responsible for their selection criteria and funding allocations. Contact your local Band office for information about eligible expenses, selection criteria and application process.
The Blackfoot Confederacy Band funding covers tuition, student fees and living expenses for full-time studies (three or more threecredit courses), but doesn’t include living expenses for students learning part-time (two or fewer three-credit courses).
A variety of financial supports are available for Indigenous learners.
When you apply for Alberta student loans, you’re automatically considered for provincial and federal grants. You’re only able to access these grants if you apply for Alberta student aid.*

You can apply online, in person, or by email using the Indigenous Student Application for Admission.
