CALGARY LETHBRIDGE

The University of Lethbridge’s Blackfoot name is Iniskim, meaning Sacred Buffalo Stone. The University is located in traditional Blackfoot Confederacy territory. We honour the Blackfoot People and their traditional ways of knowing in caring for this land, as well as all Indigenous Peoples who have helped shape and continue to strengthen our University community.

The Medicine Wheel

Growth in Every Dimension

We support your growth as a whole person, beyond academics.

Guided by the wisdom of the Indigenous Medicine Wheel, your graduate journey balances four interconnected dimensions:

• Physical (Knowledge)

• Mental (Wisdom)

• Emotional (Awareness)

• Spiritual (Understanding)

With you at the centre, these dimensions align with the four stages of graduate studies: orientation, coursework, project or thesis, and defence or capstone completion.

Through this model, we honour Indigenous Ways of Knowing, build community and encourage daily reflection as you study, work and go forward in life.

Creation of the SGS Graduate Student Medicine Wheel

The Graduate Studies Medicine Wheel was created through a deeply collaborative and culturally rooted journey, inspired by Indigenous teachings that emphasize balance and growth throughout life. Honouring Anishinaabe, Cree, and Blackfoot traditions, the process involved meaningful engagement with

Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and sacred sites to ensure the wheel reflects and supports the diverse experiences of graduate students. Thank you to co-op graduate student Nîpisîwâsaskwêtow Iskwew (Willow Fungus Woman) Natasha Randell-Tremblett for the development of this Medicine Wheel graphic.

“It’s my hope that this collaborative and culturally grounded representation will serve as a source of balance and inspiration for all graduate students as they navigate their own unique paths at the University of Lethbridge and beyond.”

Nîpisîwâsaskwêtow Iskwew (Willow Fungus Woman) Natasha Randell-Tremblett

Rooted in Purpose & Place

“As a graduate student, I love being part of the research team that collaborates on the Blackfoot Digital Arts Project and the Grasslands Project with Dr. Josephine Mills, Blackfoot Elders, faculty and students. It was important for me to complete my studies on Blackfoot territory, where ULethbridge is located. Having that physical connection to the places my ancestors have walked through before has made it very meaningful for me.”

Turning curiosity into contribution

Driven by curiosity? Some questions won’t let go. Our thesis-based graduate programs give you the space, flexibility and mentorship to pursue them fully.

You’ll work side-by-side with faculty mentors to design and complete a project shaped by your interests, building skills in critical thinking and academic writing, while contributing to advancements your field.

It’s a path for those who are ready to tackle complex problems, uncover new insights and prepare thoroughly for the next step in their academic careers.

“Engaging in research activities, specifically collaborative research with other institutions and researchers, was overwhelmingly beneficial to me. Exposure to collaborations taught me the value of adapting my scientific skillset to provide answers and evidence to different research questions, in ways that were new, exciting and challenging. Collaborating academically gave me an opportunity to continue my research career after graduation.”

Tyler Mrozowich is currently a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Dr. Jeannie Lee’s research lab in the Department of Molecular Biology at Massachusetts General Hospital & Harvard Medical School. His work focuses on investigating X-chromosome reactivation as a potential treatment for Rett Syndrome.

Research In Action

Where minds meet

The graduate experience at ULethbridge is personal, not perfunctory. It’s something you live each day and share with a vibrant community.

You’ll collaborate with leading scholars, contribute to research projects that are recognized around the world and have mentors close at hand to help you do more than you imagined.

“I first visited the University of Lethbridge in 2012 to attend a conference. What left a lasting impression on me was the welcoming atmosphere I experienced over just three days — among both faculty and students. Another major draw was the Alberta RNA Research and Training Institute (ARRTI). Even then, it was evident to many in the field that RNA research would play a central role in the future of biomedical science.”

Dr. Trushar Patel, PhD, FRSC (UK), FRSB (UK), Professor (Chemistry & Biochemistry), Associate Dean, Faculty of Arts & Science, and Canada Research Chair in RNA and Protein Biophysics

Welcome to a place where your voice matters, your questions are encouraged and your work has the power to reach far beyond campus.

From Conference to Calling

Dr. Trushar Patel’s research focuses on uncovering how viral RNA and DNA molecules interact with human host proteins. Understanding these molecular “conversations” is essential for developing targeted therapies against viral infections.

Where Research Meets Reality Resilience Through Sport

Pursuing research that he truly cared about brought Chase Petruska to ULethbridge. In Dr. Gerlinde Metz’s lab at the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience (CCBN), his work led to the creation of a powerchair soccer program for people with physical disabilities.

Chase’s research was inspired by his close bond with his brother, who has cerebral palsy. His findings showed that individuals with physical disabilities often face higher risks of stress, social isolation and reduced physical activity, particularly when supported by nonfamily caregivers.

“When I came to Lethbridge and saw no specific activity for people in powerchairs, I thought it would be a good idea to look at a powerchair soccer intervention and research the impact it had on their resilience and mental health. We are very grateful the University makes research possible and enables the powerchair soccer program. It helps community members in dire need of an intervention and social support.”

Chase Petruska, (BSc ’23, MSc ’24) PhD student, Neuroscience
