Tyler Berl′s life’s work has been shaped by moments when seconds matter, and decisions carry weight. For more than 15 years in Jacksonville, Florida, he has provided direct clinical care as a steadying hand to patients when they’re most panicked He is trained and board-certified in emergency medicine, pediatrics, and tactical medicine, along with providing critical care transport as a nurse
Tyler first became a licensed paramedic in 2011, an occupation that requires technical proficiency and emotional equilibrium He immediately felt drawn to high-acuity settings, environments where sound judgment coupled with exact execution means the margin between life and fatality.
That instinct led him to Orange Park Medical Center, where he spent six years on the Emergency Department floor before qualifying for a position on the trauma team
Inside the Emergency Department
Tyler worked with doctors, nurses, and trauma surgeons at Orange Park Medical Center Trauma activations, cardiac arrests, severe infections, pediatric emergencies, strokes, and major cardiac events were part of daily life
It was during this time that Tyler gained a mastery of advanced cardiac life support, airway management, rapid sequence intubation, and ventilator management During his career serving in the emergency department, he saved countless lives and had the opportunity to help bring new life into this world on three occasions
But what really made him stand out was that he was not only competent but steady under fire. The worse things got, the calmer he became When others would panic or hesitate, Tyler would act. Residents relied on him in codes because they knew Tyler always did what needed be done to save a patient's life during a cardiac arrest.
Pediatric Care and Specialized Transport
After a stint in the emergency department, Tyler opted to expand his clinical experience, starting in pediatrics and progressing to inter-facility transport. Working with children often calls for an extra level of attention to detail, and the IML clinical provider must be knowledgeable about both children's physiological attributes and their emotional states, given the fear that often accompanies medical treatments. Tyler spent approximately 12 months consciously honing these skills that would later prove pivotal when COVID-19 arrived
In 2020, he transitioned to private inter-facility transport, which involved moving critically ill patients between hospitals Many of these transports consist of ventilated patients, multiple IV medications, and unstable vital signs, all within the back of an ambulance. Tyler became very proficient in using sedatives, vasopressors, and advanced respiratory support to maintain hemodynamic stability while titrating medications minute by minute to keep a patient alive
His experience assisted him greatly throughout COVID, as he was one of the few paramedics in Jacksonville cleared to transport pediatric patients on high-flow nasal cannulas, such as the AirVo. These machines require an extensive knowledge of respiratory physiology, equipment
limitations, and patient response, all while caring for very sick children when no other options are available.
Education and Clinical Growth
In 2020, Tyler earned a Bachelor's degree in Psychology with a minor specialization in Public Health from the University of North Florida. This educational experience provided insight into patient behavior, mental health concerns, and health issues amongst populations, which Tyler incorporated into his clinical practice
His long-term goal had always been to further his scope of practice In 2025, he graduated from nursing school at Florida State College at Jacksonville and became a Registered Nurse in July that year. This was one of the most significant achievements, as it took many years of grinding and actual work across multiple facets of care
Stepping Away for Family
Tyler committed to his family early on, after graduating from nursing school, which proved that there are more important things in life than work His family requested his assistance to help take care of his grandma, who was having serious health issues down in Marble Falls, Texas He left his employment and temporarily moved down to take care of her until she could be moved closer to family in Jacksonville
This period reinforced values that have guided my career from the beginning: responsibility, loyalty, and service Once his grandmother was safely relocated, Tyler returned to Florida and resumed his search for a role as either a paramedic or registered nurse, ready to bring his experience back into active practice
Physical Discipline and Personal Life
When he is not caring for patients in the hospital, Tyler's life revolves around discipline and movement. He has spent nearly two decades dedicating himself to consistent gym training, starting with mixed martial arts and later transitioning to bodybuilding and athletic conditioning
He also spends time at the beach, enjoys surfing, snowboarding, and biking, and watches professional sports (Philadelphia Eagles, Jacksonville Jaguars, and UFC) Tyler doesn’t just view fitness as an accessory to his life, but a foundation that supports both his work and personal well-being
In recent years, he has strengthened his spiritual practice through regular church attendance and has developed a faith that keeps him grounded Also, family remains a mainstay in Tyler's work-life balance, as he has established stability by owning a home in Jacksonville, where he now resides, and renting out rooms.
