They support immunity, reduce inflammation, aid digestion, and protect the body from damage caused by stress, pollution, and aging.

The best part? They’re inexpensive, easy to use, and incredibly effective when used consistently. You don’t need to be a gourmet chef to take advantage of their benefits, which is a good thing for me. Whether your goal is muscle growth, faster recovery, or general wellness, incorporating these spices into your daily meals can give you a natural edge.

CINNAMON

Cinnamon is a familiar favorite for many people. Whether it’s added to baked goods or stirred into coffee, cinnamon adds a cozy flavor that feels like a warm hug. But beyond its taste, cinnamon also offers several important health benefits.

One of the most notable is its ability to help regulate blood sugar levels. This is especially useful for people who experience energy crashes, sugar cravings, or mood swings throughout the day. Cinnamon contains natural compounds that help the body use insulin more effectively, which can lead to more balanced energy levels and less strain on the body over time.

As a professional bodybuilder, blood sugar control is key when aiming to build lean muscle and reduce fat. Stable insulin levels can help limit fat storage and encourage better nutrient partitioning, meaning your body directs nutrients toward muscle growth rather than fat accumulation. This is why I add cinnamon to my oatmeal, yogurt, protein shakes, and sweet potatoes.

Cinnamon is also rich in antioxidants, which help fight damage from free radicals—unstable molecules that contribute to aging and many chronic illnesses. Some research even suggests that cinnamon may support heart health by lowering cholesterol and blood pressure.

TURMERIC

If you’ve ever had curry or golden milk, you’ve tasted turmeric. It’s known for its bright golden yellow color and has long been used in Indian and Middle Eastern cuisines. This spice is just as valuable in your wellness routine as it is in your spice blend.

The secret behind turmeric’s health power is curcumin, a compound known for its strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Inflammation is your body’s way of dealing with injury or stress. However, when it becomes chronic (meaning it sticks around too long), it can contribute to joint pain, fatigue, and chronic diseases like arthritis or heart issues.

Curcumin helps calm this inflammation and protect your cells from damage. Why does this matter to me as a bodybuilder? Intense workouts cause tiny tears in muscle fibers, leading to inflammation during the repair process. While this is a natural part of muscle growth, too much inflammation can slow down recovery and contribute to chronic joint pain or overtraining symptoms. Curcumin helps reduce excessive inflammation, allowing for faster recovery, less soreness, and improved joint function.

One thing to know is that the body doesn’t easily absorb turmeric on its own. That’s why it’s often paired with black pepper. Not sure how to incorporate turmeric into your diet? I like to add turmeric to my eggs, rice, vegetables, and detox smoothies. You can also make golden milk with turmeric, milk (or a plant-based alternative), cinnamon, ginger, and honey.

GINGER

Ginger is one of the most versatile and widely used spices in the world. Its bold, slightly spicy flavor can brighten up both sweet and savory dishes. But its benefits go far beyond flavor.

Ginger is best known for its ability to ease nausea and support digestion. Whether you’re dealing with motion sickness, morning sickness, or an upset stomach, ginger can help calm things down. It promotes the production of digestive enzymes and helps food move through the digestive tract more smoothly.

Ginger also supports the digestive process, which is often overlooked in bodybuilding nutrition. Proper digestion is essential to absorbing the nutrients from high-protein and high-calorie meals. If your digestive system isn’t functioning optimally, you may not be getting the full benefit of your nutrition plan. Ginger stimulates digestive enzymes, reduces bloating, and helps your body better process large meals.

But ginger’s value goes well beyond digestive aid. For athletes, it offers several key advantages: reduced inflammation, lower muscle pain, and enhanced digestion and nutrient absorption. Like turmeric, ginger contains bioactive compounds (such as gingerol) that reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the body. This makes it incredibly effective for reducing joint pain, easing postworkout soreness, and promoting faster muscle repair. All music to my ears, especially when training legs.

I use ginger the same way I use turmeric; both go into my detox smoothies. Looking for more ideas? Try adding fresh grated ginger to stir-fries and marinades. You can also make ginger tea by steeping fresh slices in hot water with lemon and honey, or sprinkle powdered ginger into oatmeal and baked goods.

GARLIC: NATURE’S IMMUNE BOOSTER

Garlic is one of the oldest natural remedies on record, and it still holds up today. While it’s a flavor favorite in cuisines all over the world, garlic’s real strength lies in its powerful immune-boosting and heart-supporting properties.

The key compound in garlic is allicin, which is released when garlic is chopped, crushed, or chewed. Allicin has strong antimicrobial properties, helping the body fight off bacteria, viruses, and even fungi. That’s why garlic is often recommended as a natural remedy for colds, coughs, and minor infections.

From a cardiovascular perspective, garlic has been shown to reduce blood pressure and improve cholesterol profiles. For athletes and bodybuilders such as myself, healthy circulation means better oxygen delivery to muscles, improved endurance, and faster recovery. Some studies even suggest that garlic supplementation can increase peak exercise capacity and reduce fatigue.

Garlic is also rich in antioxidants, protecting cells from damage and supporting the detoxification processes that help your body bounce back from intense training. It may even support detoxification by helping the liver process and eliminate toxins more effectively.

My favorite way to enjoy my vegetables is to sauté them in garlic and olive oil. The aroma of the garlic roasting in the olive oil – delightful. For maximum benefit, let chopped garlic sit for 5–10 minutes before cooking—it allows the allicin to activate fully.

OREGANO

Oregano is more than just a topping for pizza or a garnish on pasta. It’s a potent antioxidant and antimicrobial herb that can help the body fight off infections, support gut health, and enhance recovery. It contains carvacrol and thymol, two natural substances with strong antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral effects.

These compounds make oregano an excellent supporter of immune health. During cold and flu season, oregano can help your body defend itself naturally. It may also support gut health by fighting off harmful bacteria and promoting a healthy balance of microbes in your digestive system. Oregano is also high in antioxidants, which help protect your body from cell damage and inflammation. While fresh oregano is great, dried oregano is even more concentrated and easier to keep on hand.

For athletes, especially those in heavy training phases or during travel and competition seasons, oregano can act as a natural defense system. It may also help balance the gut microbiome—a critical factor in overall health, nutrient absorption, and even mood regulation.

A healthy gut means better digestion, less inflammation, and a stronger immune response. Considering the physical demands placed on the body by intense training, maintaining immune health is non-negotiable. The less time you spend sick or rundown, the more consistent and productive your training will be.

Oregano also acts as a natural preservative in foods, which is why it’s often used in meal prep and storage-friendly recipes. Sprinkle dried oregano on roasted vegetables, pasta, chicken, or soups. Fresh oregano can be chopped and added to salads or infused into oils for dressings.

HOW THESE SPICES SUPPORT WHOLE-BODY WELLNESS

One of the best things about these spices is how they complement one another—both in flavor and function. They each support different parts of the body, but many of their benefits overlap, creating a stronger effect when used together. For example:

• Cinnamon and ginger can balance blood sugar and improve digestion, making them perfect for stabilizing energy throughout the day.

Now you understand why, as an athlete, these are my favorite spices. And you don’t need to use large amounts. Plus, they are perfect to mix together. Even small, consistent doses added to daily meals can gradually support your health and help prevent many common ailments.

SIMPLE WAYS TO USE THESE SPICES EVERY DAY

Incorporating these spices into your routine doesn’t require a complete kitchen makeover. It’s easy to start with what you’re already eating and find creative ways to add extra flavor and nutrition. I’ve shared with you some of the ways I incorporate these spices into my daily diet. Here are a few more ideas:

• Breakfast: Add cinnamon and/or ginger to oatmeal, pancakes, smoothies, or tea.

• Lunch: Use turmeric and black pepper in soups, rice bowls, or roasted vegetables.

• Dinner: Cook with garlic and oregano in pasta dishes, grilled chicken, or stir-fries.

• Snacks: Sip ginger tea or turmeric golden milk in the afternoon or evening.

Interview with Dr. Julian Gershon

Dr. Julian Gershon, a physician with more than four decades of experience, is a pioneer in the fields of sports medicine, anti-aging, and regenerative medicine. From following in his father’s footsteps to becoming a published author and leader in his field, his journey is a testament to his passion for helping others achieve a vibrant, long-lasting, healthy life. With a practice that has been cash-only since 2014, Dr. Gershon has built a loyal following of patients who trust him to optimize their health and well-being.

A Family Tradition and a Professional Evolution

Deeply rooted in family history, Dr. Gershon’s path to medicine was a personal one. He pursued his studies at the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Missouri, the nation’s first D.O. school and the alma mater of his father.

"I only applied to that one medical school, having fallen in love with it as a boy through my family roots there," he reminisced.

After graduating, he started practicing in 1980, working alongside his father and developing a deep understanding of osteopathic principles.

His commitment to learning and expanding his expertise led him to achieve a remarkable three board certifications: family medicine, sports medicine, and anti-aging regenerative medicine. Dr. Gershon spent two decades as a Division I team physician at the University of North Texas, a role he cherished.

"I loved it, and I worked as the team physician there for a long time. It was a great experience," he said of his time working with the university's athletes.

He then moved to Aspen, Colorado, in 2010, fulfilling a lifelong dream he'd had since he was a teenager growing up and ski racing in northern Michigan.

A Vision for the Future of Medicine

Dr. Gershon’s career took a significant turn around the year 2000 when his colleague, Bob Goldman, founded the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M). Dr. Gershon remembers attending an A4M conference and being blown away by it, recognizing that anti-aging was the future of medicine. He recalled a conversation from 1989 where he dismissed the concept of anti-aging medicine, saying his colleague who was exploring it had “lost his mind."

However, after attending the A4M conference, he recalled, "The light switched on for me. I knew I was seeing where the future of medicine was heading, and I was going to do everything I could to be a leader in the field."

He began studying anti-aging and regenerative medicine, a field that resonated with his personal health journey as an aging athlete. He began testosterone therapy 22 years ago, a decision he credits for helping him feel great and keep up with his five children and nine grandchildren.

"I'm not going down without a fight," he said, reflecting on his decision to pursue this new path.

He has since been a fixture at A4M conferences, not having missed one in 20 years.

Dr. Gershon believes that the principles of anti-aging medicine are finally gaining mainstream acceptance.

"The pendulum is swinging in the other direction now, where people are learning more, and this is becoming a mainstream way of approaching medicine, as it should," he said.

He sees this as a positive change, pointing out that many conventional doctors are still largely unaware of the benefits of longevity. He is optimistic about the future, citing the growing availability of information to the public and the increasing number of physicians who are incorporating these principles into their practices.

Harnessing the Power of Regenerative Therapy

A core part of Dr. Gershon's practice is regenerative medicine, particularly the use of stem cells and exosomes. He has performed over 1,200 procedures since 2012, utilizing a range of products, including autologous fat-derived stem cells and exosome products. He noted he has seen dramatic turnaround from days to weeks in patients with significant autoimmune issues, including those with long-haul COVID and vaccine injuries.

His therapies have had a significant impact on his patients' lives, with Dr. Gershon reporting an 80 to 90% reduction in pain in patients with joint pain, often after just one procedure. He recounted a story of a patient whose shoulder he treated six years ago.

"He continues to have no pain with treatment," Dr. Gershon said, adding that he treated the patient's right shoulder that very day. "It's pretty rewarding to be able to make that kind of impact in people's lives."

He has countless patient stories, with many who have been told they would need a joint replacement finding complete pain relief instead through such therapies.

Dr. Gershon also uses regenerative therapies to treat a range of other conditions, including autoimmune disorders such as Lyme disease, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis.

"The exosomes and stem cells, first and foremost, modulate the immune system," he said, which leads to significant improvements. He also sees the potential for these therapies in treating hormonal imbalances, which he considers to be of epidemic proportions.

He now sees men in their 30s and women decades before menopause, suffering from low testosterone, something he never saw earlier in his career. He helps these patients with a range of hormone replacement therapies, including pellets, injections, and creams.

"I treat a lot of couples," he explained. "It's great to see them with vitality back in their life."

Beyond the Fatigue: A Bestselling Author

Dr. Gershon’s commitment to sharing his knowledge led him to write a book titled Beyond The Fountain of Youth: How To Live Better Longer With The Power Of Regenerative Medicine. The book recently became an Amazon bestseller and won the Summer Reading Awards for non-fiction health and fitness.

“I wrote it to share what I’ve learned over 22 years in regenerative medicine. There is a better way, and you don’t have a fighting chance if you don’t balance your hormones,” he emphasized.

How Bill Wiedemann's VISO Mask is Revolutionizing Red Light Therapy and Exposing an Industry Built on Ineffective Devices

WHEN AN ENGINEER with precision measurement equipment tested the top-selling LED face masks in a billion-dollar market, he discovered something disturbing: they barely worked. Bill Wiedemann, President and CTO of Lumara Systems, found that the devices generating hundreds of millions in annual revenue were delivering what he calls "spotty coverage at best"—treating only 5% to 15% of facial skin.

This discovery came at a pivotal moment. In 2022, clinical customers using Wiedemann's full-sized red light therapy panels—which deliver 25 mw/cm² average power—began asking for LED face masks they could recommend to patients. But these medical professionals had seen firsthand what real red light therapy could accomplish with proper power and coverage, and they refused to sell what they considered inadequate consumer devices.

"I am upset that 95% of the red light products shipped do nothing," says Wiedemann, speaking from his San Jose, California headquarters. "When I discovered that the vast majority of LED mask companies were delivering products that were less than effective, I set out to make a red light face mask that was truly effective." This request from his clinical customers became the catalyst for what would become the VISO mask—a second-generation device designed to deliver professional-grade results at home.

THE ACCIDENTAL REVOLUTIONARY

Wiedemann's journey into red light therapy began not in a laboratory, but through personal experience. In 2016, two friends introduced him to red light therapy's benefits. With 36 years in venture capital-backed companies, leading sales, marketing, business development and engineering since graduting from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 1980 with a degree in Electrical Engineering and Technology.

Armed with precision measurement equipment, he began testing the full-sized red light therapy panels generating millions in revenue annually. What he found shocked him.

"When I measured the optical power of one of the top three companies and compared our optical power to theirs, my first product provided more than ten times the optical power. Higher optical power enables shorter treatment times," Wiedemann explains. The competitor's device delivered a mere 2 milliwatts per square centimeter, while his engineering approach achieved 20 mw/cm²—providing ten times the therapeutic power.

This discovery led to the founding of Lumara Systems on July 1, 2016, with a clear mission: create red light therapy devices that actually work. Wiedemann developed an effective full-sized panel solution at the $2,000 price point delivering 25 mw/cm² uniform energy that redefined what effective red light therapy could accomplish.

THE BILLION-DOLLAR PROBLEM

By 2022, the LED face mask market was gaining momentum, and has since grown to $1 billion in total sales.
