In July, I was in the Middle East, spending time with refugees and listening to their stories.
One evening, I was invited into the home of a Syrian family who fled Aleppo when ISIS came. The father, once a gifted wedding dressmaker who sold custom gowns to designers in Italy and France, now lives with his family in a small apartment far from the city he once called home. Their lives have been marked by loss, displacement and extraordinary resilience.
They welcomed me not with extravagance, but with joy. With laughter. With food lovingly prepared and stories bravely shared. We didn’t sit at a table, just a blanket on the floor. No silverware, no ceremony. Just presence, just grace, just enough.
I talk often about “table theology” — how the table makes us equals, how everyone brings something and everyone receives something. That evening reminded me again: The kingdom of God is found not in furniture or formality, but in fellowship.
I brought little. But I left with a full heart.
Love. Hospitality. Kindness. Dignity.
This is the kingdom. This is the table. Even when it’s on the floor.
Thank you for being a church that makes room at the table through your prayers, your giving, your serving, your witness. Let us never forget: The gospel travels best at eye level, on the ground, in community.
THE REAL SUPERHEROES
by Rev. Chris McLain, Pastor of Caring and Adults 55+ Ministry
It’s October. Between now and the end of the month, there are going to be plenty of debates and opinions surrounding “if” and “how much” Christians will or will not be participating in the month’s festivities. So, instead of jumping on that wagon, I’d love to challenge your mind in a different way!
Superman vs. Batman — One is a superhero, and one is a vigilante. Both have an alter ego, but it’s not what you think. Clark Kent is Superman’s alter ego, but Batman is the alter ego of Bruce Wayne. Superman is Krytonian and, by extension, so is Clark Kent. Batman is human, so his DNA is that of Bruce Wayne.
2 Corinthians 5:17-21 says we are new creations in Christ. When we come to know Christ, we do not remain our old selves. Instead, we are made new. Verse 21 says: “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” As a follower of Jesus, you have become the “righteousness of God” and are called to be like Him every day. God doesn’t say that you have become a god, but He does say that your spiritual makeup is no longer based on human nature, but instead on the nature of the One who is raised from the dead, Jesus Christ!
While you may have to work harder at remaining a new creation than Superman does leaping a tall building, at least you don’t have to throw on that gaudy, yellow, utility belt!
