Bills to boost blood and platelet supply win unanimous approval

The House of Representatives on Thursday unanimously approved two measures promoted by the Puerto Rico Blood Bank and introduced by House Speaker Carlos “Johnny” Méndez Nuñez that aim to increase the blood and platelet supply on the island.

The first of the bills, House Resolution (HR) 428, is intended to study all aspects of blood donation and transfusion in Puerto Rico, and the capacity of the healthcare system to ensure a stable blood supply. The second, HR 429, would study the parameters of Law 98-2013, primarily the compliance by government agencies, municipalities, public corporations and other government entities with the provision that these entities assist the Blood Bank in blood donation campaigns.

“This House of Representatives is committed to the Puerto Rico Blood Bank in its mission to save lives,” Méndez said. “Therefore, after discussing this with Blood Bank staff, we introduced these two measures aimed at evaluating real and feasible alternatives to improve the functionality of the Blood Bank, promoting more blood donation events in the government and private sectors.”

“Encouraging regular blood donation is a simple and effective way to contribute to saving lives and making a significant difference in the community,” the House speaker added. “Through this investigation, the Puerto Rico House of Representatives has the opportunity to lead a comprehensive effort to address the blood shortage through legislation, educational campaigns, strategic partnerships, and reliable data for decision-making.”

Each year in Puerto Rico, some 146,000 units of blood are

needed, and a single transfusion can require up to three units of blood. Blood cannot be manufactured artificially. The only way to obtain it is through voluntary donations from healthy individuals.

Furthermore, blood has a limited shelf life and, therefore, is needed constantly.

The Puerto Rico Blood Bank at Centro Médico plays a vital role in healthcare by serving as the primary collection center for essential blood components such as red blood cells, plasma, and platelets to meet the needs of inpatients and outpatients at the hospitals affiliated with Centro Médico, the main medical center on the island.

Among the hospitals that receive blood, platelets, and other blood components from the Centro Médico Blood Bank are the Children’s Hospital, the Industrial Hospital, the Trauma Center, the San Juan Municipal Hospital, the University Hospital for Adults, and the Centro Médico Emergency Room.

Governor says she won’t withdraw nomination of advocate for people with disabilities

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón said Thursday that she will not withdraw the nomination of David Figueroa as advocate for people with disabilities, despite objections raised by some senators.

“I saw a letter [sent by] the United Retailers Center, opposing the nomination of Dr. David Figueroa as advocate for people with disabilities. The letter doesn’t mention the advocate; it talks about lawyers and other people and other things that have nothing to do with him,” the governor said at a press conference. “The person I am nominating is the advocate, not the group of people mentioned there. And second, we spoke with the advocate; he denies any kind of accusation and says that he has always been defending the interests of people with disabilities, which is why many of these organizations supported his nomination, and he

will continue to do so.”

“And I will not withdraw that nomination,” González Colón said. “The Senate will review it. I believe that the best process is the public hearing process, and in this case, the advocate, who comes from humble beginnings and whose entire career has been dedicated to defending people with disabilities, can defend himself against any accusation. In fact, he has never been charged with anything, so when I read the letter, I thought, well, one thing is that there are people who make accusations, but this person has no charges against him, no pending cases.”

So far, Senate Alternate Majority Leader Juan Oscar Morales Rodríguez, has stated that he will not vote for Figueroa.

Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz, who chairs the Appointments Committee, was in Washington on Thursday and had not yet commented on the nominee.

Governor: PRFAA director is worth the cost of her position

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón on Thursday defended the salary and travel expenses of Gabriela Boffelli, the executive director of the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) office in Washington, D.C.

“I am privileged that someone who was offered positions at the White House and with lobbying firms in the United States was available to lead the Puerto Rico government office in Washington,” the governor said at a press conference. “Her academic background, her work experience on congressional issues -- she was my chief of staff in Congress -- and the fact that I was the resident commissioner who secured the most federal funding for Puerto Rico because I had the best staff.”

Regarding the controversy over Boffelli’s travel, the governor insisted that the official travels at her request.

“Regarding the travel that has been

criticized publicly, well, since I arrived here, I have been bringing federal government officials to Puerto Rico. Next week I have the FEMA Council here, the new committee the president appointed to evaluate the future of FEMA [Federal Emergency Management Agency],” González Colón continued. “I can’t be at every meeting, I can’t go to every power plant, I can’t be at every meeting with LUMA or Genera. So my director of federal affairs comes to Puerto Rico with them, accompanies them to meetings with industry, the private sector, and various organizations because they have been involved. The same thing happens when members of Congress come. When I bring members of Congress to Puerto Rico, committee chairmen, and I say, ‘I want to transition from PAN to SNAP,’ I need someone to take them around, meet with the secretary of the Family Department, meet with the secretary of agriculture, meet with industry, meet with the private sector, with supermarkets. Well, that’s my office director, so she will come to

Puerto Rico as many times as necessary. It’s much cheaper for me to have this staff than to hire lobbyists.”

Boffelli has made at least 20 official trips in eight months, at an estimated cost of $24,000 to the public treasury. The expenses include over $13,000 for airfare, over $8,000 for lodging, and some $2,500 for meals.

In comparison, her predecessor, Luis Dávila Pernas, made 13 trips during his first eight months in office, at a cost of $13,591.

After González Colón took office as governor, the PRFAA authorized an increase in the executive director’s salary. As a result, Boffelli now earns an annual salary of $200,000, which is $25,000 more than Dávila Pernas’ salary and $50,000 more than the salaries of previous directors, whose salaries were around $150,000.

The increased salary, however, is some $4,000 less than what Boffelli earned in 2024 as chief of staff in González Colón’s legislative office when she was resident commissioner.

PIP seeks to investigate consequences of dependence on federal funds

The Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) delegation in the House of Representatives announced Thursday the filing of a measure, House Resolution 436, that orders an investigation into the economic, social and fiscal implications of Puerto Rico’s dependence on federal funds.

“The NPP [New Progressive Party] and PDP [Popular Democratic Party] administrations have irresponsibly dismissed the possibility of creating a comprehensive plan to reduce dependence on federal funds, which

has fostered a mentality of dependency, as if we lacked the capacity to create, manage, and strengthen our own economic base,”

PIP House Minority Leader Denis Márquez Lebrón said. “The colonial economic model is unsustainable and that has been proven beyond doubt by hurricanes Irma and Maria, the 2020 earthquakes, and COVID-19. It is equally alarming that this model is being threatened by Trump’s restrictive and punitive policies, which have already resulted in significant cuts to vital programs in Puerto Rico.”

“The country must prepare for a scenario that does not foresee the long-term sustainability

of a dependent, colonial economy,” added PIP Alternate Minority Leader Adriana Gutiérrez Colón. “This situation must be investigated urgently, given the obvious socioeconomic and fiscal consequences it has for Puerto Rico.”

Rep. Nelie Lebrón Robles stated that “the government of Puerto Rico cannot continue perpetuating a culture of dependency.”

“We have the capacity to create a comprehensive, all-encompassing, and long-term plan that lays the foundation for breaking the cycle of dependency in its various forms, not one that could collapse at any moment and leave Puerto Rico without essential services,” she said.

Lawmaker says 24 island hospitals may file for bankruptcy

In an overview of Puerto Rico’s 42 hospitals, Rep. Gabriel Rodríguez Aguiló stated this week that some 24 of them could file for bankruptcy, and 17 might close within the next two years.

Rodríguez Aguiló highlighted several factors contributing to the rising costs of

the healthcare system, including migration, delayed payments from insurance companies and weekly bonuses for physicians.

“The hospital must provide, in addition to its contract with the insurance company, a weekly bonus to the doctor so they can see the patients they have referred,” Rodríguez Aguiló noted. “These are the factors that increase the hospital’s operational costs because

no one reimburses that extra expense for the doctor. No insurance company covers that.”

“It is assumed that if the doctor is contracted by the insurance company, they will see the insurance company’s patients and, if necessary, go to the hospital to attend to those patients,” the legislator added.

Rodríguez Aguiló said he will seek solutions for the aforementioned issues, es-

pecially considering that the population aged 65 and older in Puerto Rico is projected to increase by 30%.

“That is why we are currently working in the House of Representatives to develop both short- and long-term plans,” he said. The lawmaker added that the issues and potential solutions will be discussed in the House of Representatives next week.

PREB approves amendments to Energiza gas-fired plant contract

The Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (PREB) of the Public Service Regulatory Board has announced the approval of an amendment to the power purchase and operating agreement between the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) and Energiza LLC for the development of a natural gas-fired generation plant.

ThE amendment includes an increase in contracted capacity from 478 megawatts to 560 megawatts, a decrease in the capacity payment from $21.05 per kilowatt-month to $19.55 per kilowatt-month, and additional provisions ensuring that any savings from refinancing are passed on to customers. Projections indicate that the changes could lead to some $302 million in savings over the contract’s duration.

The PREB emphasized that the amendments align with the approved Integrated Resource Plan and the need to add 3,000

megawatts of generating capacity to stabilize the island’s electrical system.

In its statement, the PREB confirmed that the capacity increase to 560 megawatts is both reasonable and beneficial for the electrical system and customers alike.

“The reduction in the capacity payment to $19.55 per kilowatt-month is a significant measure that translates into direct savings for customers, even amid inflation and market factors that, in principle, would not suggest lower prices than those previously approved,” the PREB said in its decision.

“The additional provisions in this amendment ensure that if PREPA successfully emerges from bankruptcy and Energiza refinances its debt, the resulting economic benefits will be directed to the public corporation and its customers,” the regulator noted.

The decision received unanimous support from all commissioners.

Vega Baja municipality launches electronic equipment recycling initiative

The Autonomous Municipality of Vega Baja announced Thursday the launch of a new electronic equipment recycling initiative as part of its commitment to protecting the environment and the health of its citizens.

The campaign, administered through the town’s Office of Environmental Health, Transportation and General Services, in partnership with ReciclaTuCel, seeks to raise awareness about the importance of properly disposing of electronic devices such as cell phones, laptops, tablets and video game consoles, which contain highly polluting toxic materials such as lead, cadmium and mercury. When disposed of improperly, the materials can enter the soil, water and ecosystems, causing serious consequences for public health and the environment.

“In Vega Baja, we continue taking firm steps toward a more sustainable future,” Mayor Marcos Cruz Molina said. “With this initiative, we not only promote environmental

education, but we also offer our citizens a safe and responsible alternative for managing electronic equipment they no longer use.”

The collection center will be located at the town’s Recycling Office, on the premises of the aforementioned office, on Highway 687 at the Tortuguero Recreational Area (behind the soldier monument).

For more information, citizens can contact (787) 8552500 ext. 3312 or send an email to reciclario@vegabaja.gov.pr.

Bancredito sues 3 law firms after dismissal of criminal charges against Velutini

Bancrédito Holding Corp. (BHC), the sole shareholder of Bancrédito International Bank & Trust Corp., has filed a lawsuit against three international law firms: McConnell Valdés LLC, Holland & Knight LLP and McDermott Will & Schulte LLP. The lawsuit seeks a jury trial and compensation for legal representation that led to a $15 million fine.

ThE action follows the recent dismissal of most criminal charges against Julio Herrera Velutini, the founder of Bancrédito, who faced charges of corruption alongside former governor Wanda Vázquez Garced and a former FBI agent.

“Those who, instead of protecting the interests of the bank and its shareholders, acted negligently, causing reputational and economic damage, must be held accountable under the law, just as Bancrédito has always done,” BHC CEO Luis Zapata said. He emphasized the need to establish responsibility for

those who compromised the institution’s name and prestige, as well as its assets and those of its trust beneficiaries.

The complaint, filed in the Eleventh Judicial Circuit in Miami-Dade County, alleges that the law firms exhibited gross professional negligence during negotiations with the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). According to Section 33 of the complaint, the lawyers’ advice led the bank to abandon valid defenses and accept a consent order, admitting to facts that the lawyers knew to be false based on their involvement in prior evaluations.

Section 17 of the document notes that in 2020, McConnell Valdés and Holland & Knight provided a joint opinion letter to Puerto Rico regulators, claiming the bank’s anti-money laundering and Bank Secrecy Act compliance programs were adequate and stating that certain reports were unnecessary. However, when FinCEN began its investigation, those firms allegedly disregarded their previous positions, omitted available

arguments, and advised the bank to accept inaccurate facts.

“Any reasonable attorney would not have advised the bank to accept a Consent Order that alleges the bank’s compliance programs deteriorated over time,” the complaint argues. “However, the attorneys themselves had concluded in their analysis that the programs were sufficient and had even improved.”

In 2023, BHC filed a lawsuit against Driven Administrative Services, which was appointed as a trustee to act as the bank’s board of directors during the liquidation process. The lawsuit, currently under appeal in Puerto Rico, accuses Driven of breaching its fiduciary duty by entering into the consent order with FinCEN based on the negligent advice of the bank’s attorneys. The complaint further contends that once all depositors were repaid in early 2023, the remaining assets should revert to the bank and its shareholders. Instead, Driven allegedly retained or sold artwork valued at over $22 million, despite no longer having obligations to the depositors.

A note, a gun and a mother’s conscience led to an arrest in Kirk’s killing

In the chaotic hours after an assassin’s gunshot rang out at Utah Valley University last Wednesday, Tyler Robinson texted his roommate and romantic partner back home 250 miles away and said, “Drop what you’re doing, look under my keyboard.”

There in their nondescript apartment in the fast-growing conservative Utah city of St. George lay a note from Robinson saying, “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I’m going to take it.”

It would take 33 hours and a frantic search that roped in top-ranking Trump administration officials before Robinson, 22, was finally apprehended. In the end, it was Robinson’s own mother who recognized her eldest son’s image on the news and began a painstaking series of phone calls that ended with him in custody.

Criminal charges filed on Tuesday portray Robinson as a left-leaning assassin with proLGBTQ+ views who spent a week planning a murder that has inflamed America’s political hatreds and led to vows of retribution from the highest echelons of government and even talk of civil war.

But court papers and interviews reveal the wrenching realizations that unfolded in private, as Robinson’s partner and parents in the red-rock deserts of southern Utah realized that the onetime straight-A student and scholarship winner appeared to be the black-clad figure being hunted by law enforcement.

“You weren’t the one who did it right????” Robinson’s partner wrote to him last Wednesday.

“I am,” Robinson replied. “I’m sorry.”

Utah prosecutors said that Kirk was targeted “based on his political expression,” but they did not offer a more detailed motive on Tuesday as they charged Robinson with aggravated murder and announced they would seek the death penalty.

Robinson was raised in a Republican family — the accused described his father as “a pretty diehard maga” — but his political views had intensified and moved to the left over the past year, particularly when it came to gay and transgender rights, officials have said.

Robinson’s roommate and romantic partner was transitioning from male to female gender, and Robinson told his family he believed Kirk had been spreading hate.

“I had enough of his hatred,” Robinson wrote to his partner in a text message after the shooting, according to court papers.

Utah officials said that Robinson’s romantic partner had known nothing about any plans to kill Kirk and had been cooperating with investigators. Investigators have not said whether the relationship was a motive in targeting Kirk, an outspoken critic of LGBTQ+ rights.

Beau Mason, Utah’s public safety commissioner, said

investigators were still working to unravel Robinson’s personal relationships and excavate his extensive online life to fully understand what might have driven him.

“Who did he speak to, who did he talk to?” Mason said in an interview. “It’s the same thing for digital: What interactions did he have online, what websites did he visit, what may have influenced him in any way? You don’t know what’s out there until you search for it.”

The search ultimately led investigators to St. George, where Robinson had returned after dropping out after one semester at Utah State University, nearly 400 miles north, near the Idaho border. He had been in his third year of an electrician-apprentice program at Dixie Technical College.

The couple spent much of their time cloistered inside playing video games, neighbors said. They had a small friend group and often used the Discord messaging platform to arrange times when they could meet online to play video games, according to a friend who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of retribution.

Robinson never indicated in those Discord chats he wanted to harm anyone, including Kirk, the friend said. After the shooting, however, he alternately joked about being misidentified as the killer and confessed to Kirk’s shooting in different areas of the platform.

In texts to his partner after the shooting, Robinson was by turns apologetic, defiant and affectionate as he mulled whether he could retrieve the rifle used to kill Kirk and make the 250-mile drive back home to St. George. He seemed convinced he could get away with it.

“I am still ok my love, but am stuck in orem for a little while longer yet,” he said, referring to the city near Provo that is home to Utah Valley University.

“Shouldn’t be long until I can come home, but I gotta

grab my rifle still. To be honest I had hoped to keep this secret till I died of old age. I am sorry to involve you.”

The partner appeared stunned.

“Why?”

“Why did I do it?” Robinson replied. “Yeah.”

He responded, “Some hate can’t be negotiated out.”

Robinson kept texting, worrying about how he would tell his parents about the missing rifle and telling his partner that the cryptic messages he engraved on bullet casings were “mostly a big meme.”

There were no further responses from his partner included in the court records filed on Tuesday.

“Delete this exchange,” Robinson wrote. Like millions of other Americans, Robinson’s mother in southern Utah had been following Kirk’s shooting. On Thursday, she noticed that the images of the gunman that were released to aid the search looked disturbingly familiar. She called Robinson, the eldest of her three sons, to ask where he was. He told her he was home sick and had been there since the day of the shooting, according to court records.

Robinson’s mother then showed the photo to her husband, who agreed that the gunman looked like their son.

Robinson’s father also believed that the rifle, which investigators found in a wooded area near the campus, resembled a gun given to their son as a gift. They messaged their son on Thursday and asked him to send a photo of the rifle. The son did not respond.

His parents convinced Robinson to come to their family home on a quiet suburban street in Washington, Utah, just outside St. George. He was the gunman, Robinson implied, according to court documents. But he could not go to jail. Instead he wanted to kill himself.

His parents reached out to a family friend they knew through the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who is also a retired deputy sheriff, and began trying to negotiate Robinson’s surrender.

The retired deputy quickly called Sheriff Nate Brooksby of Washington County and, his voice shaking, reported that he believed he knew who had killed Kirk.

“I never could have fathomed what came out of his mouth,” Brooksby said in an interview on Tuesday, recalling the phone call.

Brooksby then called Sheriff Mike Smith of Utah County, where the shooting occurred, to break the news.

Brooksby said Robinson had seemed “quiet and somber” and asked for a lawyer.

“The intense law enforcement pressure backed him into a corner,” Brooksby said. “He knew it was inevitable that he was going to get caught.”

FBI officials outside of Tyler Robinson’s parents’ home on Friday, Sept.12, 2025 in Washington, UT. The man accused of shooting Charlie Kirk left a trail of evidence and had no way to outrun his parents’ recognition, court documents showed. (Kim Raff/The New York Times)

This is peak hurricane season. Or is it?

When Tropical Storm Gabrielle formed on Wednesday, it ended a nearly monthlong period of quiet in the Atlantic hurricane season during what is usually its most active time.

It was the second year in a row that what is known as peak hurricane season — when most hurricanes and the most destructive hurricanes typically form — began quietly, and like last year, some forecasters who had predicted this year would have an above-average number of named storms have been on edge.

Were their predictions wrong? Or would the Atlantic suddenly spin into action as it did last year, when Hurricane Helene and then Hurricane Milton, two of the most devastating storms in recent memory, formed within weeks of each other?

Here’s a look at what’s been keeping this year’s season quiet, and why that may be about to change.

Forecasters expected more storms than usual.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from

June 1 to Nov. 30, and there have been seven named storms this year. Only one storm, Erin, reached the threshold to become a hurricane, but its center remained far offshore.

Meteorologists have a name for hurricanes that stay away from land: fish storms, because they do nothing except disrupt the fish. Still, as with Erin, a distant hurricane can bring damaging rip currents and surf to the East Coast, so forecasters, state officials and residents need to track them closely.

In late May, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said in its annual prediction that its experts expected an above-average hurricane season, with between 13 and 19 named storms. An average Atlantic hurricane season has 14 named storms, including seven hurricanes.

What followed instead was one of the slowest starts to hurricane season in 20 years, with the first named storm, Tropical Storm Andrea, not forming until June 23.

At the season’s midpoint in early August, NOAA issued an updated forecast that only slightly reduced the number of storms expected. The ingredients were there for an above-average

season, the agency said, and it expected between five and nine hurricanes to be packed in before the season ends Nov. 30.

On Tuesday, Phil Klotzbach, a hurricane researcher at Colorado State University, said the year could still be above average, which would mean more than half a dozen named storms between now and the end of November.

“Of course, my forecast confidence isn’t high at the moment,” he said. “If you had sent me an email last year on this date and asked how busy we thought October would be, I would probwwwwwably have been tentative there, too.”

What’s keeping the storms at bay?

Weather conditions in the Atlantic have thwarted the development of storms for much of the summer.

Last year, the temperature of the Atlantic Ocean was abnormally high, which helped fuel an unusually intense hurricane season. This year’s temperatures aren’t as high, but they are still above average, and the water is certainly hot enough for hurricane development.

In recent weeks, though, wind shear, or the changing of wind speed and direction with height, has kept storms from forming. Think of it like trying to build a tissue tower in the middle of a circle of 20 industrial fans at different speeds and heights.

That shear is forecast to weaken, Klotzbach

said, adding that he expected activity in the Caribbean to be above normal late in the season.

“We would anticipate October being fairly busy,” he said.

La Niña could play a role here, too.

Matt Rosencrans, the lead hurricane season forecaster with NOAA, said this week that after Gabrielle there would most likely be another storm soon on the horizon, and at least one more after that. “To have three more hurricanes before the end of September is not out of the question,” he said.

“Sixty percent of the hurricane season happens after that Sept. 10 peak,” Rosencrans said, analyzing data dating back to the 1850s. “It’s backloaded.”

As in previous years, the autumn half of hurricane season could be much busier than the summer months. Climatologically, Rosencrans said, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean tend to “heat up with activity” from October into early November, while activity in the rest of the Atlantic begins to decline.

Another concern is that the weather pattern known as El Niño Southern Oscillation — known in the weather world as ENSO — is favored to turn toward La Niña. If this were to occur in the next month, it would help to reduce the wind shear across parts of the Atlantic and allow for more storms to form.

Our vanishing culture of argument

Aguy I knew in college once told me, as I struggled to make a point in a dorm lounge argument, that I had “the verbal acuity of shampoo.” The put-down was so devastating that it immediately ended discussion. I think of the line nearly every time I fumble for a word or write a bad sentence.

This was at the University of Chicago, which has a culture of argument. Some of the arguments are dead serious: In its commitment to free expression, the university has repeatedly stood up to inveigling plutocrats, investigating politicians, cancel culture commissars and encampment bullies. Some of them are not so serious. Every year since 1946, the university’s greatest scholars have debated the universe’s dumbest subject: whether latkes or hamantaschen are the better Jewish food. (Latkes, obviously.)

As undergraduates, we were conscripts in this culture. This wasn’t particularly political. I can remember witnessing only one tiny protest — against Douglas H. Ginsburg, the circuit court judge, of all people — in my four years at the college. But nearly every undergraduate could not avoid reading the classics of Western thought. Far from being a form of ideological indoctrination, it was an antidote to it.

What is the soul of the Western tradition? Argument. Socrates goes around Athens investigating the claims of the supposedly wise and finds that the people who claim to

know things don’t. The Lord threatens to destroy Sodom for its alleged wickedness, but Abraham reproaches and bargains with him — that for the sake of 10 righteous people he must not destroy the city.

In both traditions, Athens’ and Jerusalem’s, the lone dissenting voice is often the heroic one.

To read Western philosophy and literature was our chance to understand these dissents. Where did the anti-federalists differ from the federalists, or John Locke from Thomas Hobbes, or Jean-Jacques Rousseau from them both? The curriculum made us appreciate that the best way to contend with an argument was to engage with it rather than denounce it, and that the prerequisite to engagement was close and sympathetic reading. Reading Marx didn’t turn me into a Marxist. But it did give me an appreciation of the power of his prose.

I came to Chicago when Western civilization courses were falling out of fashion at other universities, as was the idea of a core curriculum, as was the idea that underlay the core: that there was a coherent philosophical tradition based in reasoned argument and critical engagement that explained not only how we had arrived at our governing principles but also gave us the tools to debate, preserve or change them.

In place of that idea, higher education in the United States has generally opted for a kind of consumer-driven relativism. Students are no longer treated as promising minds in need of becoming acquainted with a great tradition. Instead, they are viewed as credential-seeking customers, entitled to an a la carte education. If there is one overriding belief, it is that identity — racial, sexual, religious and so on — is an inviolable aspect of self that can negate any argument that seeks to question or discomfit it.

All this has happened in tandem with the digital transformations of this century, which have further pushed us into personalized bubbles of ideology and information. The effect of the new technologies has generally been terrible for our health, psychological as well as political. But I don’t think it would have been as bad if we hadn’t first given up on the idea of a culture of argument rooted in a common set of ideas.

Which brings me to Charlie Kirk.

Kirk, to my way of thinking, was not a real conservative, at least in the American sense. The point of our conservatism is to conserve a liberal political order — open, tolerant, limited and law-abiding. It’s not about creating a God-drenched regime centered on a cult of personality leader waging zerosum political battles against other Americans viewed as immoral enemies.

As for Kirk’s style of argument, owning inarticulate liberal kids in mass audience settings for the sake of producing viral videos isn’t real engagement, much less education. Did Kirk ever lose an argument, at least in his own mind?

Still, Kirk was out there, making arguments, inviting discussion and taking brave risks. Like few others in his generation, he offered a sharp and defiant voice against the tut-tutting illiberalism of today’s campus progressives. Young men thrilled to his message, in part because they were tired of

being told that their masculinity was toxic or that their race was guilty or that their civilization was evil. Without the excesses of the left, Kirk would never have become the phenomenon he was.

It’s too bad that Kirk, raised in a Chicago suburb, didn’t attend the University of Chicago. It wouldn’t have hurt getting thrashed in a political debate by smarter peers. Or learning to appreciate the power and moral weight of views he didn’t share. Or recognizing that the true Western tradition lies more in its skepticism than in its certitude.

But the larger tragedy by far is that it’s America itself that’s losing sight of all that. In the vacuum that follows, the gunshots ring out.

Bad Bunny leads in nominations for the Latin Grammys

Bad Bunny, Argentine duo Ca7riel & Paco Amoroso, and producer and songwriter Edgar Barrera are the top nominees for the 26th annual Latin Grammy Awards, reflecting a diverse quadrant of the music industry that has exploded with the rise of streaming.

Bad Bunny leads the pack with 12 nods, which were announced Wednesday by the Latin Recording Academy. Among the superstar’s citations are album of the year for “Debí Tirar Más Fotos” (“I Should Have Taken More Photos”), on which he embraces older Puerto Rican styles like plena and urbano in addition to continued experiments with reggaeton and trap. He also received nominations in both the record and song of the year categories for two of that album’s tracks: “Baile Inolvidable” and “DtMF.”

Ca7riel & Paco Amoroso, who make a playful and subversive mix of hip-hop, Latin pop and raucous funk, have 10 nominations, including album of the year for “Papota,” and for two tracks that are also up for both record and song: “El Día del Amigo” and “#Tetas.” Stars in Latin America, Ca7riel & Paco Amoroso had a breakout moment last fall with a viral video appearance on NPR’s “Tiny Desk Concerts.”

Bad Bunny and Ca7riel & Paco Amoroso will contend with three songs that are also up for both record and song: Lafourcade’s “Cancionera,” Sanz’s “Palmeras en el Jardín” and Karol G’s “Si Antes No Te Hubiera Conocido.” (Record of the year goes to the performer and producers of a single recording; song of the year recognizes songwriters.)

Others up for record of the year include Liniker (“Ao Teu Lado”), Zoe Gotusso (“Lara”) and Jorge Drexler & Conociendo Rusia (“Desastres Fabulosos”). The song of the year ballot adds Andrés Cepeda’s “Bogotá,” Mon Laferte’s “Otra Noche de Llorar” and Liniker’s “Veludo Marrom.”

The best new artist field includes Alleh, Annasofia, Yerai Cortés, Juliane Gamboa, Camila Guevara, Isadora, Alex Luna, Paloma Morphy, Sued Nunes and Ruzzi.

The other top artist nominees are Natalia Lafourcade, a singer-songwriter from Mexico, with eight nominations, and Liniker, from Brazil, with six.

For album of the year, Bad Bunny and Ca7riel & Paco Amoroso will compete against Rauw Alejandro’s “Cosa Nuestra,” Lafourcade’s “Cancionera,” Alejandro Sanz’s “¿Y Ahora

Barrera, a Mexican American who is one of the most indemand figures behind the scenes of contemporary Latin pop, also has 10 nods, including as a writer and producer of Karol G’s hit “Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido.”

Youth art contest to spotlight mental health

Ayouth art contest on mental health has been launched as part of the partnership between San Juan Capestrano Hospital and the Puerto Rico Museum of Art.

The event, announced earlier this week, is part of the initiative leading up to World Suicide Prevention Day, for which the San Juan Capestrano Hospital System (SJCHS) announced the third edition of the “Colors of a Healthy Mind” art contest, a project that seeks to inspire adolescents throughout Puerto Rico to express, through art, messages of hope, well-being and mental health care.

In the contest, for young people from ages 12 to 17, participants are invited “to capture in their works the importance of talking about emotions, resilience and unity in times when mental health has become an urgent challenge,” SJCHS CEO Marta Rivera Plaza said. “Our institution has a serious commitment to creating spaces for dialogue and creative expression. This contest is not just an artistic call, it is a call to recognize that every young person has a voice and a story that deserves to be heard.“

Driven by streaming and international touring, and by the celebrity wattage of figures like Bad Bunny, Karol G, Alejandro and Peso Pluma, Latin music has long been a booming sector for the global music industry. It is also the fastest-growing genre in the United States.

“The impact of Latin music continues to grow on a global level,” Manuel Abud, CEO of the Latin Recording Academy, which bestows the awards, said in a statement. “And all of the nominated artists encompass its diversity and richness while continuing to preserve the iconic sounds that make our music unique.”

This year’s ceremony will be held in Las Vegas on Nov. 13 and broadcast by TelevisaUnivision. Awards are voted on by music professionals who are part of the Latin Recording Academy. To be eligible, music must have been released from June 1, 2024, to May 31, 2025, and have at least 60% of its lyrical content in Spanish, Portuguese or “any native regional language,” according to the academy.

The 60 categories in this year’s ceremony include two new awards: best music for visual media and best roots song. For the latter, one of the competitors is Bad Bunny.

Wall Street indexes notch record-high closes as Intel soars on Nvidia stake

WallStreet’s main indexes posted record-high closes on Thursday, a day after the U.S. Federal Reserve delivered a quarter-point interest rate cut, while chipmaker Intel rose after Nvidia decided to build a stake in the company.

Intel clinched its biggest daily gain since October 1987, jumping 22.8% after Nvidia said it would invest $5 billion in the struggling U.S. chipmaker. Peer Advanced Micro Devices slipped 0.8%.

Nvidia rose 3.5%, recovering losses from Wednesday when a report said Chinese tech firms might stop buying its chips.

The moves boosted a broader semiconductor index up 3.6%, and also lifted the tech-heavy Nasdaq and the S&P 500 technology sector up 1.36%. Seven of the 11 S&P 500 sectors gained.

Meanwhile, the small-cap Russell 2000 index notched its first record high close since November, at 2,466 points. Smallcap companies are likely to perform better in a low interestrate environment.

On Wednesday, Fed Chair Jerome Powell emphasized that the softening jobs market was a priority and indicated more reductions could follow at upcoming policy meetings.

“We are looking for support for economic growth and justification of stretched valuations and the prospect of lower interest rates helps that,” said Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA Research.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 124.10 points, or 0.27%, to 46,142.42, the S&P 500 gained 31.61 points, or 0.48%, to 6,631.96 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 209.40 points, or 0.94%, to 22,470.73.

The biggest S&P sector decliners were consumer staples and consumer discretionary stocks.

New data showed that the number of Americans filing new applications for unemployment benefits fell last week, but the labor market has softened as both demand for and supply of workers have diminished.

The rate cut is expected to add to Wall Street’s recent rally, boosted by monetary policy easing hopes and a revival of AI-linked stock trading. Investors are pricing in about 44.2 basis points in cuts by end-2025, data compiled by LSEG showed.

Among stocks, CrowdStrike gained 12.8% after at least nine brokerages raised their price target on the stock.

Shares of Darden Restaurants fell 7.7% after the Olive Garden parent reported weak quarterly results.

Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 1.87-to-1 ratio on the NYSE, and by a 2.5-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq.

The S&P 500 posted 31 new 52-week highs and eight new lows while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 156 new highs and 42 new lows.

Volume on U.S. exchanges was 19.30 billion shares, compared with the 16.67 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.

“The Fed also raised its inflation forecast, highlighting the delicate balance between setting monetary policy to offset a weaker labor market versus bringing inflation lower,” he said.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 260.42 points, or 0.57%, to 46,018.32, the S&P 500 lost 6.41 points, or 0.10%, to 6,600.35 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 72.63 points, or

Financial stocks like American Express helped boost the Dow.

The Fed’s decision and outlook will test Wall Street’s recent rally, which has been supported by rate-cut expectations and revived enthusiasm around AI-stock-linked trading.

Trump and Starmer acknowledge divide over Palestinian statehood

President Donald Trump wrapped up his state visit to Britain on Thursday with a joint news conference with Prime Minister Keir Starmer of Britain, in which both men warmly praised the other while acknowledging a disagreement over Palestinian statehood.

The two leaders have formed an unlikely friendship, given their starkly different political backgrounds. Starmer, a former human rights lawyer, leads the center-left Labour Party, and his main political rival, right-wing populist Nigel Farage, is a longtime ally of Trump. Yet during the news conference, the rapport between Trump and Starmer was apparent, with the president sometimes turning to the prime minister to pat his shoulder, and Starmer carefully avoided answering questions in a way that could highlight their deep underlying political differences.

The prime minister had hoped to cajole Trump into a more aggressive approach toward President Vladimir Putin of Russia on the war in Ukraine, and he said that the two leaders had spent “the best part of an hour” speaking in private about world affairs on Thursday.

For Britain, this one-on-one time bending the president’s ear on the war in Ukraine and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza was a key priority for the state visit. But it was unclear whether the immense cost and ceremony of the visit would pay off on either front.

Trump said of Putin: “He has let me down” but did not directly address questions from reporters about what actions he might take to pressure the Russian president further, or to

support Ukraine.

The prime minister insisted they were united on trying to find a resolution to Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip.

“We are working together to end the humanitarian catastrophe in the Middle East,” Starmer said.

When Trump was asked about recognition of Palestinian statehood by Britain and other allies, however, the president said, “I have a disagreement with the prime minister on that score.”

One specific outcome from the trip came

in the form of a technology partnership agreement signed by Trump and Starmer on Thursday, which they said would help the United States and Britain lead the world on artificial intelligence and other high-tech innovations. Here’s what else to know:

— Investments: In announcements tied to Trump’s visit, companies including Microsoft, OpenAI and Blackstone have pledged more than $200 billion in investment in Britain over the next decade, and British companies including the pharmaceuticals giant GSK have said they would invest in the United States. Anti-austerity strikes and protests grip France

Big anti-austerity street marches and labor strikes gripped France on Thursday, raising the pressure faced by Sébastien Lecornu, the country’s new prime minister, as he tries to pass a debt-reducing budget by the end of the year.

Railway workers, students, civil servants and others joined protests organized by labor unions to oppose the plans of François Bayrou, Lecornu’s predecessor, to cut 44 billion euros, nearly $52 billion, from next year’s state budget. France’s Interior Ministry said over 500,000 people had attended the protests; one of the leading labor unions put the figure at over 1 million.

Bayrou was ousted by lawmakers last week, and President Emmanuel Macron replaced him with Lecornu, a centrist and an ally.

But it was not immediately clear whether Lecornu, who had promised a “break” with the past, would scrap his predecessor’s plans or use them as a basis for lawmakers to amend, and the concern over looming budget cuts has persisted.

“The budget that was imposed on us by the last prime minister — and the new one will be the same — was one of austerity,” said Cécilia Rapine, an archaeologist from Normandy who was hoisting an orange union flag at the march in Paris as protesters waved smoke bombs and danced to music blaring from trucks.

Rapine said she understood that France’s precarious finances needed fixing. But she worried that schools and hospitals would bear the brunt after years of business-friendly tax breaks that she said had deprived the state of funding.

“Austerity gives no hope,” Rapine said, as orange smoke wafted over her head. “It creates more cracks in society.”

such pledges are common during high-profile visits, the British government will surely see them as a win at a time when it is struggling to show that it can increase economic growth.

— Jeffrey Epstein: Trump could not entirely avoid a topic he wishes would go away: His former association with the sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who died in 2019. Starmer recently fired Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the United States, based on revelations about his relationship with Epstein. Asked if he felt any sympathy for Mandelson’s position, Trump said, “I don’t know him, actually,” though they met several times, including in the Oval Office.

— Nuclear energy: Though Trump and Starmer are far apart on most climate and energy policies, they seem to agree on nuclear energy, having struck a deal to build more nuclear plants in Britain. Starmer’s administration has promised to fast-track reviews of proposed new plants, while Trump has issued executive orders to speed up the approvals of nuclear reactors in the United States.

— Protests: Thousands of protesters poured into central London on Wednesday to demonstrate against Trump’s visit, a contrast to his red-carpet reception from royalty and political leaders during his carefully choreographed visit to Britain.

— First lady: Queen Camilla gave Melania Trump a tour on Thursday of Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House, a miniature palace that was given as a gift in 1924 to Queen Mary, the wife of King George V, as an example of fine British craftsmanship. Later, Melania Trump joined Catherine, Princess of Wales, at Frogmore Gardens for an event with Britain’s Scouts Association.

Labor unions say that anything resembling Bayrou’s budget — which, among other measures, proposed to freeze welfare payments at their current level — would place an unacceptable burden on lower- and middle-class workers. The unions want higher taxes on wealthy individuals and big business, more funding of public services and a reversal of Macron’s increase in the legal retirement age.

“Today we are sending the government a very clear warning,” Marylise Léon, leader of the French Democratic Confederation of Labor, the country’s largest union, told reporters at the march in Paris. “The budget cannot be built solely on the back of workers.”

In Paris, many metro lines were running only during rush hour. Traffic was disrupted on regional train lines but mostly normal on the country’s high-speed rail route. Unions estimated that about a third of elementary-school teachers and 45% of middle and high school teachers were striking, though the Education Ministry cited lower figures.

Parts of the Louvre Museum were closed, and the Eiffel Tower shut down.

She held her baby for an hour. Then the state took her away.

An hour after her daughter was born in a small town in Denmark, the government took her baby.

She continues to pump milk that someone picks up and carries to the infant. She stares out the large, square windows of her apartment building and constantly imagines holding her again.

“I just wish I’d been given the chance to prove that I can be a mother,” she said.

Bronlund is 18 years old and came from a home with a history of abuse. So Danish authorities subjected her to an extensive parental competency test that is intended to protect children but has been criticized as a harsh overreach into family life.

She is also Greenlandic, and Greenlanders have long complained that these tests are unfair. A recent study found that Greenlandic children born in Denmark are five times more likely to be taken away from their parents compared with other children in Denmark.

Denmark, which controls Greenland as an overseas territory, has tried to address this. Earlier this year, while Bronlund was pregnant, the Danish parliament voted to modify how the parenting tests were applied to Greenlandic families.

But for reasons that still remain unclear, Bronlund wasn’t treated as the new law requires, which local officials have described as an “error.” An appeals hearing was held Tuesday, though no decision was made.

Bronlund’s efforts to get her baby back have rallied supporters and sparked protests, becoming another sore spot in Denmark’s long and complicated relationship with Greenland.

The case has unfolded at a busy time for Greenland, a gigantic island straddling the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans that President Donald Trump has vowed to get “one way or the other.” Taking it over, Trump says, is crucial

for American security.

Denmark, in turn, has been scrambling to keep Greenlanders on its side. It is suddenly doing all sorts of things that Greenlanders had been demanding for years. One of them was changing the parental competency test, which is referred to by one long word in Danish: the Forældrekompetenceundersøgelse. Another has been to address historical misdeeds.

Just this past week, Danish and Greenlandic researchers released a scathing 347-page report that detailed the Danish government’s past campaign of forcing contraception on a whole generation of Greenlandic women and girls, some as young as 12 and many kept in the dark about what was being done to them. The Danish prime minister even offered a long-awaited official apology for this and other wrongs done to Greenland.

Bronlund’s ordeal started in December, when she was 17 and found out that she was pregnant. She went for a scan and saw “a tiny heart beating — that was incredible,” she said.

She wondered whether having an abortion would damage something in her body that might prevent her from having children down the road.

“All of that was running through my mind,” she said. “But most of all, I just couldn’t bear the thought of killing the fetus. So I decided to keep it.”

According to documents she shared with The New York Times, the Children and Youth Committee in her municipality, west of Copenhagen, started a welfare investigation in January.

Bronlund said she was subjected to interviews with psychologists, meetings with social workers, standardized psychological evaluations and IQ tests that measured her ability to manipulate shapes and do math problems, which she says she was never good at. Traditionally, the parenting investigations involved a series of interviews and standardized tests.

Municipal authorities declined to discuss details of Bronlund’s case, citing privacy concerns.

Bronlund never fit into a neat category, she says. She was born in Greenland, adopted by a couple who moved to mainland Denmark and dropped out of school in the seventh grade. She was working as a babysitter and played on Greenland’s national youth handball team. When she was growing up, she was sexually abused by her father. He was eventually convicted and sent to prison, where he remains.

The paperwork said that she was treated as any other Dane and not as a Greenlander

plete with megaphones, posters and a carton of iced tea as a refreshment.

Bronlund is “a very sweet girl. She doesn’t drink. She doesn’t smoke. Nothing,” Nicolajsen said. “And she’s fighting for her baby. Isn’t that what you want a good mother to do?”

Bronlund continues to pump milk. She gets up in the middle of the night to do it. Every other week, she is allowed a two-hour visit with her baby, whom she has named AviajaLuuna.

She has appealed her case, and Tuesday, a national board will review the findings. Denmark’s minister for social affairs and housing, Sophie Hæstorp Andersen, has already stated that “a severe mistake has been made,” saying that local authorities failed to follow the new law.

because she was “raised in Danish culture and with Danish language.”

Authorities across Denmark use parenting tests, but they are not applied to the entire population — only to families in which there are already welfare concerns. Denmark has recently strengthened child protection laws and as a result made it easier for the state to override a parent and even remove their child from their home.

The new rules about how these assessments should be applied to the Greenlandic community in Denmark took effect in May, when Bronlund was six months pregnant. Under the new rules, standardized psychological tests should no longer be used; instead, Greenlandic families are supposed to undergo specialized screenings that are more culturally sensitive.

According to the documents, the evaluation team concluded that she was “not able to ensure her child’s well-being and development” and that she had “a great need for extensive psychiatric and social support,” which her family believes is an unfair conclusion based on the sexual abuse she suffered as a child.

She and the activists who have amassed around her believe that the judgment is wrong on many levels.

“Her father did something to her years ago, and now she has to pay?” said Maria Rubin Nicolajsen, a volunteer in Bronlund’s community who helps families navigate the bureaucracy.

Nicolajsen shared these thoughts at a small protest earlier this month outside the municipal government’s headquarters, com-

Local authorities said, in the paperwork that the family shared with the Times, that they applied a standardized psychological test to Bronlund “which was not in line” with the new policy.

“Such tests should not be used in cases involving Greenlandic families,” the local officials wrote, and “the municipality regrets this error.”

But the municipal officials said, in the documents, that they didn’t rely purely on the tests and even without them, they would have still have had a “sufficient basis” to put the baby in foster care. Local authorities said they relied on many inputs to reach their conclusion, including interviews with Bronlund and a referral from the police.

If she loses her appeal, Bronlund has no feasible way to keep the baby in her family. If her mother took the baby, she said she was told, she would have to move out. She declined to comment on the baby’s father, and in the documents shared with the Times, there is no mention of him.

Bronlund said the hardest part of the whole experience was the moment she said goodbye to her daughter.

Two people from the municipality walked into the delivery room.

They were dressed in white.

They said she had one hour left with her baby and then she would have to give her over to a foster couple.

“It was the best hour of my life,” Bronlund said. “I held her and felt her against me.”

She whispered to her child that she loved her more than anything on Earth and that she would fight for her every day, day and night.

And then she wrapped her in a blanket, handed Aviaja-Luuna to her mother and watched her baby be carried away.

ABC pulls Jimmy Kimmel off air for Charlie Kirk comments after FCC pressure

ABC announced Wednesday evening that it was pulling Jimmy Kimmel’s late night show “indefinitely” after conservatives accused the longtime host of inaccurately describing the politics of the man who is accused of fatally shooting the right-wing activist Charlie Kirk.

The abrupt decision by the network, which is owned by the Walt Disney Co., came hours after the chair of the Federal Communications Commission, Brendan Carr, assailed Kimmel and suggested that his regulatory agency might take action against ABC because of remarks the host made on his Monday telecast.

The network did not explain its decision, but the sequence of events Wednesday amounted to an extraordinary exertion of political pressure on a major broadcast network by the Trump administration.

Many Democrats immediately criticized the move, with Sen. Chuck Schumer, the Senate minority leader, calling it “outrageous.” But President Donald Trump, in a social media post from Windsor Castle in Britain, where he is traveling, described it as “Great News for America.”

The decision to suspend “Jimmy Kimmel Live” was made by Bob Iger, Disney’s CEO, and Dana Walden, the company’s television chief, according to two people with knowledge of the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a private process.

The comments at the center of this week’s firestorm came during Kimmel’s open-

ing monologue on Monday night. “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them, and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” the host said.

Conservative activists castigated those comments, saying they mischaracterized the political beliefs of Tyler Robinson, the accused shooter. Prosecutors said Robinson had written in private messages about Kirk’s “hatred,” but authorities have not identified which of Kirk’s views the suspect found hateful; his mother told prosecutors that her son had recently shifted toward the political left and had become “more pro-gay and transrights oriented.”

Carr, in a an interview on a right-wing podcast Wednesday, said that Kimmel’s remarks were part of a “concerted effort to lie to the American people,” and that the FCC was “going to have remedies that we can look at.”

“Frankly, when you see stuff like this — I mean, we can do this the easy way or the hard way,” Carr told the podcast’s host, Benny Johnson. “These companies can find ways to change conduct and take action, frankly, on Kimmel, or there’s going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.”

Carr’s criticism of Kimmel was the latest attack against the media by the president and his administration. Trump himself sued ABC last year in a case that the network paid $16 million to settle. On Monday, the president filed a defamation lawsuit against The New York Times and four of its reporters.

This summer, Carr’s FCC approved a major merger involving CBS’s owner, Para-

mount, days after CBS agreed to pay $16 million to settle a separate lawsuit filed by the president.

CBS also canceled “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” ending a network franchise for more than three decades after next May. CBS said the cancellation was for financial reasons, but many in the media industry have speculated that it was done to curry favor with the Trump administration while Paramount’s merger was pending. Colbert, like Kimmel, is frequently critical of Trump and his policies.

Kimmel had planned to address the backlash to his comments during his Wednesday telecast, according to two people familiar with the program. But Disney’s executives made the decision to suspend the show before taping began. The company’s board was not involved, according to one of the people with knowledge of the discussions inside Disney.

As FCC chair, Carr wields power over the broadcast licenses that are granted to local TV stations by the federal government. In the podcast interview Wednesday, Carr encouraged local ABC stations to “push back” and preempt coverage that does not serve “their local communities.”

“Frankly, I think that it’s really sort of past time that a lot of these licensed broadcasters themselves push back on Comcast and Disney and say, ‘Listen, we are going to preempt, we are not going to run Kimmel anymore until you straighten this out,’ ” Carr said. (Comcast is the parent company of NBC.)

Shortly after Carr’s remarks, Nexstar, an owner of ABC affiliate stations around the country, said that it would preempt Kimmel’s program “for the foreseeable future” because

of the host’s remarks. Nexstar recently announced that it planned to acquire a rival company in a $6.2 billion deal, which will be scrutinized by the FCC.

In a social media post Wednesday, Carr expressed approval for Nexstar’s decision to preempt Kimmel, thanking the company “for doing the right thing.” He added: “I hope that other broadcasters follow Nexstar’s lead.”

Late Wednesday, Sinclair, another owner of many local TV stations, said that it would also suspend Kimmel’s program, and called on Kimmel to apologize and “make a meaningful personal donation” to Kirk’s family and the activist’s political group, Turning Point USA.

Schumer denounced the pressure on ABC from the Trump administration as “despicable, disgusting, and against democratic values,” and compared it to the playbook of autocratic Chinese and Russian leaders.

“Trump and his allies seem to want to shut down speech that they don’t like to hear,” Schumer said on CNN. “That is not what democracies do. That is what autocracies do. And it doesn’t matter whether you agree with Kimmel or not, he has the right to free speech.”

Late on Wednesday, after ABC pulled Kimmel, Carr went on Sean Hannity’s Fox News program and described the actions by Nexstar and Sinclair as “unprecedented.”

“I’m very glad to see that America’s broadcasters are standing up to serve the interests of their community,” Carr said. “We don’t just have this progressive foie gras coming out from New York and Hollywood.”

He added: “This is an important turning point.”

Puerto Rico on the rise at NORCECA Women’s Final Six with sweep of Canada

The Puerto Rico Women’s National Volleyball Team secured its second win in a row at the 2025 NORCECA

Final Six on Wednesday night, sweeping Canada 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-19) in a commanding performance that reinforced its competitive momentum in the continental tournament in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.

Star opposite spiker Decelise Champion, who led Puerto Rico’s offense with 12 points, emphasized the team’s focus and resilience.

“We were dominant in the first two sets and had great rhythm,” she said. “I think in the third our pace dropped a bit because we got too confident, but we managed to come back and secure the win. Our defense was strong today, we scored with solid attacks and our blocking worked well.”

With the win, Puerto Rico improved to 2-1, while Canada remained winless at 0-3. The United States and Mexico sat atop the standings after Wednesday’s play, both at 3-0. The top four teams will advance out of the round-robin

With a snub on a

It is one of the fiercest rivalries in sports. It cranks up nationalistic fervor in two nuclear-armed neighbors. It draws viewership across the world, given the vast diasporas of the two competitors: India and Pakistan.

And yet somehow the game of cricket has, at times, offered a fragile semblance of civility even during the most strained moments between the two countries. Tensions away from the sport, it was said and hoped, could be cooled on the field with a simple handshake between the two teams.

But none of that was in evidence last Sunday night.

India and Pakistan were facing off in the United Arab Emirates in a group stage game of the Asia Cup tournament. Batting second,

phase to the semifinals in a crossover format.

Thursday’s matchups were to include Puerto Rico vs. Cuba (0-3), Canada vs. the Dominican Republic (1-2), and Mexico vs. the United States.

Puerto Rico took the upper hand against Canada at the

outset. In the first set, they surged ahead 18-9 with timely blocks from Alba Hernández, while Champion, Valeria Vázquez and Paola Santiago powered the offense. The second set saw continued momentum, with Diana Reyes and Dariana Hollingsworth joining the offensive charge. Canada’s Emma Boyd responded with a pair of strong spikes. The third set was the most competitive. Canada took an early lead at 11-9, with Gabrielle Attieh and Grace Calnan joining Boyd to challenge Puerto Rico’s attack. But with key blocks from Willmarie Rivera and Champion against Maryn Boldon, Puerto Rico tied the score at 12-12. Canada regained the lead at 17-15 with Raya Surinx on the attack, but Puerto Rico rallied once more. Adriana Rodríguez blocked Boyd, Hollingsworth scored with a powerful spike, and Rodríguez sealed the win with a final attack.

Key stats from the match:

* Blocks: Puerto Rico 13, Canada 3

* Attacks: Puerto Rico 34, Canada 30

* Service points: Puerto Rico 4, Canada 3

* Errors: Puerto Rico 9, Canada 24

cricket field, India-Pakistan tensions hit new pitch

India cruised to victory. Then, with barely a glance backward, the Indian players walked off the field. No handshakes. No exchange of pleasantries.

“We were ready to shake hands,” said Pakistan’s coach, Mike Hesson, a New Zealander. “But they had already gone in.”

In a postmatch news conference, Suryakumar Yadav, the Indian captain and the player who scored the winning runs, said that the snub had been planned.

He dedicated the win to India’s armed forces and to the victims of a massacre in which 26 people were killed on the Indian side of Kashmir in April that his country’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, described as a “terror attack.” India accused Pakistan of being involved in the assault, a claim that Pakistan denied. The episode led to some of the worst fighting in decades between the two countries before a ceasefire was declared.

Going into the cricket match, the first since the conflict, India’s government and its cricket establishment were “aligned,” Yadav said, appearing to acknowledge a new level of nationalistic fervor being attached to the game in India. He added, “We gave the proper reply.”

India and Pakistan faced off in the United Arab Emirates in a group stage game of the Asia Cup tournament last Sunday. India won the match, then politics ensued. (Reddit via r/IndiaCricket)

Sharda Ugra, a sports journalist in India, said that there was a more forceful way for India to have lodged a protest against Pakistan. The team could have forfeited Sunday’s game.

“It would mean 2 points less, which would in turn mean they had to fight harder” to advance in the tournament, she said. “That would have made a bigger statement because it would show this is what you’re willing to put on the line.”

On the Pakistani side, the reaction to the snub was sharp and angry.

Salman Agha, the captain of the Pakistani team, skipped the postmatch ceremony, and the team filed a complaint

with the match referee.

The chair of the Pakistan Cricket Board, Mohsin Naqvi, who also leads the Asian Cricket Council, issued a terse public statement, saying: “Utterly disappointing to witness the lack of sportsmanship today. Dragging politics into the game goes against the very spirit of sports.”

But in India, many celebrated the move, and there was little criticism of Yadav and his team. Online, some users called the gesture long overdue.

In a way, it was the heavyweight of the sport throwing its weight around. India is the economic engine of cricket and is home to one of the richest leagues in all of sports, the Indian Premier League. India’s cricket authorities also have links to the government — Jay Shah, chair of the sport’s worldwide governing body, the International Cricket Council, is the son of Amit Shah, a powerful lieutenant of Modi.

Ammar Ali Jan, a historian in the Pakistani city of Lahore, said that members of the Indian cricket team’s decision not to acknowledge their opponents at the end of the game was another sign of the influence of Modi and Hindu nationalism.

“It is now shaping every sphere India participates in, including international sport,” he said. “It’s damaging the spirit of sportsmanship. It’s damaging cricket itself.”

Puerto Rico outblocked Canada 13-3 in the match.
