Introducing InSight
Peter Giannetti Editor-In-Chief

The fluid life cycle of trend is at the core of the HomePageNewsInSight TrendIndex , now in its third season of illuminating key lifestyle trends that will feed home and housewares demand in the coming year and beyond.
What separates InSightfrom other trend reporting and forecasting platforms is the depth to which it digs to harvest meaningful, actionable trend guidance. It is not merely conceptual. It is organic, rooted in fresh innovation scouted at trade shows across the world—real products that, when viewed as a collective, reflect and respond to relevant, compelling market and lifestyle cues influencing home and housewares consumers every day.
The chief InSightcurator, trend analyst Tom Mirabile, along with his team at Springboard Futures and creative director, Dawn Evans, cultivate trend guidance from factors encompassing the consumer marketplace. But it is their direct experience within the home and housewares business that makes the product discoveries and trend direction presented by InSight all the more salient and strategically sharpened by an intuition to adapt the presentation and analysis based on ongoing shifts in environment and consumption.
Just like the trends covered, the HomePageNewsInSightTrendIndexhas ripened and adapted since its first season.
InSight now will be released on a quarterly basis, showcasing multiple trends in each edition. The result is a more functional and comprehensive tool for building and managing strategy year-round.
Served up in a vibrant new design, each InSight edition will brim with a more consumer-focused, story-based approach to presenting new products across many categories and functions that embody key trends.
The new InSight also features a holistic approach to trend-affirming market data, integrating exclusive data from HomePageNews and its parent, the International Housewares Association, with renowned third-party data.
And readers can expect insights from an expanded lineup of home and housewares industry experts for a wider perspective on how trends are evolving and influencing the business.
The seeds of emergent lifestyle trends are already planted. The transformed HomePageNewsInsightTrendIndex can help cultivate the next harvest of home and housewares opportunity.

Future Focus : Entertaining Revival
Driver Direction
Economic Pressures
Inflation and cost-consciousness are pressuring consumers to socialize and entertain more frequently at home instead of going out.
Emotional Connections
With increasing screen time and a sense of social media fatigue, more people want genuine, slower, more present gatherings at home to reinforce personal relationships.
New Traditions
Consumers are reimagining how they celebrate, embracing reinventions such as mocktails, curated dinner parties and themed gatherings.
Control & Confidence
Consumers are seeking control and confidence in their routines and home cooking offers both. A return to slow living and skill building, where cooking, hosting and gathering are acts of care.

“Stay-in Culture” and entertaining at home are part of a broader trend set embracing rituals, multitasking and emotional connection.
Consumer awareness of leisure time value and scarcity are supporting more realistic and imperfect gatherings rather than idealized ones.
Consumers are craving hot meals, simple prep and familiar flavors, all delivering maximum effect with minimal effort.
In food preparation and presentation, consumers are seeking authenticity and experience. Home hosting is seen as both a creative outlet and artistic expression.

Expert Perspective
Leatrice Eiseman Director, Eiseman Center for Color Information and Training, Executive Director, Pantone Color Institute
Q: What role does color play in helping consumers thrive amid current socioeconomic unrest?

A: When there is a concern about the economy, neutrals generally sell best, especially in big-ticket items like furniture or floor covering. Many items in home and housewares offer them the opportunity to use color less expensively and more adventurously, allowing them to bring more joy and creativity into their surroundings.
Trend Tracker : Neo-Surrealism
Dreams, Distortion and Delight
Neo-Surrealism reinterprets the dreamlike spirit of 1920s Surrealism with a modern twist. While both revel in symbolism and odd juxtapositions, today’s movement leans into distortion, fantasy and illusion. It’s more whimsical and emotionally expressive—less about hidden meaning, more about visual delight.
Emerging as an antidote to minimalism’s calm restraint, Neo-Surrealism thrives as a bold accent rather than a full-room statement. It integrates with classic, modern or eclectic interiors—and its vibrant momentum shows no sign of slowing through 2026.

Future Focus : Postminimal
Two style directions will dominate the trend landscape for the coming two to three years. The first is Postminimal , which will resonate with consumers prioritizing wellness, calm and sensory comfort. The second, Neo-Traditional , will appeal to those seeking timelessness, familiarity and authenticity.
Importantly, we can expect a mixture of these two very singular styles to have the broadest adoption. That hybrid sweet spot combines the serenity of Postminimal with the authenticity of Neo-Traditional, creating interiors that are both restorative and expressive.
First, let’s identify the hallmarks of Postminimal , followed by some products that speak to the trend.

Q: How is contemporary style evolving to deal with the expanding needs and demands of modern lifestyles?

A: Today’s dominant styles are expanding in multiple and sometimes contradictory ways. For example, products are increasingly rounder, thicker and often organic. Neutrals and solid colors (often sunset hues) favor texture. Natural materials show grains, veins and striation. At the same time, an emerging interest in geometry, especially grids and blocks, can be seen in new shapes and patterns. Sharp edges appear on items made of earth materials, challenging the notion that creased forms feel inherently harsh. While comfortable in a neutral or complex palette, this style also works in brighter hues.
This more architectural take on contemporary style is directional. We expect it to build over the coming two years.

Q: What are some important ways in which entertaining at home is being influenced by social media?

A: Social media has turned home entertaining into both an experience and an aesthetic. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok blur the line between hosting and storytelling. People host to connect, but also to showcase their taste, creativity and favorite products in ways that feel genuine and impactful. The influence runs both ways: social media doesn’t just inspire, it drives discovery and purchase, raising the bar for how moments and the housewares that shape them are shared, remembered and elevated.

Q: Do you find that color trends frequently cross generational divides?

A: Rather than generational divides and no matter the age level, consumer color choices are based primarily on lifestyles and locations. Trends do play into color choices as they inform prospective customers about what looks new and fresh and will provide a personal comfort level within a given space.

Trend Tracker : Postmodern Revival
Form, Fun and Fantasy
Resurgent Postmodern décor celebrates bold expression and visual play, often prioritizing form over function to create sculptural, attention-grabbing pieces. Its aesthetic thrives on vibrant palettes and daring color contrasts. Gold is a new addition here. Objects are unapologetically eclectic, mixing materials like wood, plastic, metal, marble and glass. Playful, irregular shapes dominate—filled with asymmetry and geometric mashups that blur the line between art and utility. Irony, parody and humor remain central.

Future Focus : Experience-First Hosting
Hostingcore refers to an aesthetic and mindset of being always ready to host—making your home feel welcoming, spontaneous and hospitable even for casual get-togethers. Here’s how key aspects translate in merchandising.
Element Execution
Entertaining Station
Welcoming, Relaxing & Layered Lighting
Flexible, Conversational Seating Clusters
Accessible Serving Pieces & Tools
Always-ready bar or drinks area. Consider mobile bar carts, freestanding bar cabinets, even built-ins and portable hideaway bar sets. Don’t forget all the accessories needed to fill these areas.
Moveable, dimmable smaller accent lighting. Consider rechargeable electric lamps and lanterns, realistic flame LED candle lighting, string lighting, etc.
Modular, movable and multi-functional furniture and seating. Consider floor cushions, nesting and tray tables, coffee tables with hidden seating, etc.
Assortments of interesting decorative and multifunctional serving accessories. Consider boards, trays, small bowls, napkins, coasters, etc.
The way consumers host, gather and connect is evolving—driven by four key aspirations that span generations.
Quality Over Quantity
Hosts focus on creating a personal and meaningful experience for a smaller, carefully chosen group of close friends and family.
Shared Experiences
Guests are invited to participate in activities and conversations that build connection, like collaborative cooking, creative projects or simply engaging in heartfelt dialogue.
Authenticity & Intention
The emphasis is on sincere engagement and sharing, rather than on material displays. The atmosphere is relaxed, not performative.
Genuine Presence
With less pressure to create a perfect event, the host is free to be present and enjoy the company of their guests, fostering deeper interactions.

Q: Looking ahead, what will define a great party?

A: Designing for mood, storytelling and experience is increasingly what sets parties apart. That means shifting the focus from impressive accomplishment to heartfelt interaction. This perspective sees hosting as an opportunity to genuinely share our space, time and attention. It’s about presence, not perfection. In this mindset, hospitality is not about wowing guests with a flawless presentation but creating an environment for sharing and interaction. I say "sharing" because an important aspect of this new ethos is the participation of the host, who too often gets disconnected from the heart of the gathering by practical concerns.

Q: How are home product consumers responding to the uncertainties and instabilities of the current economic climate?

A: Consumers are showing modest resilience, prioritizing essentials over discretionary spending. While food continues to take a larger share of household budgets, general merchandise has seen a recent decline. Year-to-date through September 27, small appliances are up 1%, housewares are down 2%. The year began strong for the home industry, but momentum has slowed since August. Recent growth is concentrated in categories tied to essential replacements, reflecting a more cautious and needs-based consumer mindset.
Data from Circana* points to strong category-level growth tied to host-oriented purchases:
“Consumers are seeking novelty, experiential touches and elevated host tools alongside functional basics.”
* Cited on behalf of the International Housewares Association

Q: What trends are driving consumer choice of functional and decorative home products today?

A: The consumer choice for home products is split into two groups of considerations when they perform a purchase, as I see it: (1) is function, (2) is feel-good. The function comes into place when a need must be fulfilled—which product will do best for me and what are the reviews on the specific product saying? The feel-good product can be spotted in both joyful feelings towards yourself as a consumer or for someone you want to treat or support.

Q: What emotional and experiential elements are influencing consumers' home and housewares purchases?

A: I'll use my favorite new buzz phrase: emotional ergonomics. In essence, it means considering the psychological impact while designing products and environments. In this, it speaks to the feel-good dynamic that play an expanding role in many home and housewares purchases. Organic shapes are more inviting. Calm, earthy tones connected to nature are soothing. Meanwhile, vivid color and pattern satisfy the need to express boldness and whimsy. Textured or ultra sensual textiles create a feeling of coziness and handmade, artisanal products fulfill a need for personal expression as important as comfort.

Q: In the face of today's lackluster economy, are style trends still important?

A: In both self-purchase and gifting, trend relevance is still incredibly important. Social media influence and a very trend-aware consumer make that a certainty. It's important to keep in mind that trend reaches beyond style elements and also relates to functionality. In tight eonomic times, consumers need more reasons to spend, so there is a need to stay aware of both the want and the need sides of that purchase decision when creating product assortments.

Q: What factors are driving purchasing decisions in the current economic environment?

A: Purchasing decisions today are increasingly driven by values. Specifically, consumers are shopping—and not shopping—their values.
Leading the conversation is an item’s impact on the planet. Bringing this to the forefront signals an era of conscious consumption, with stricter criteria for purchasing. Each product must bring joy, be decorative as well as functional and have traits like multifunctionality or an ability to work in a range of rooms or for multiple purposes.
Buying will always be there. Age and stage considerations, evolving preferences and necessity are not going away. Nonetheless, we see hyperconsumption being pushed into the background as intentional shopping takes its place.

Pantone ® ColorWatch : Palette Perspective
In 2026, color finds its calm. New neutral hues with quiet personality will continue to anchor home and housewares and deliver versatility and depth without overwhelming a space.
This palette signals an evolution toward expressive balance rather than stark minimalism. Saturation is refined. Brightness is intentional. And color serves as an emotional connector. Pantone’s Home + Interiors 2026 theme, “Welcome Home, ” captures this return to comfort and natural grounding.
Neutrals now act as character, not background— rich, restorative tones create harmony through moody contrasts and subtle accents. The result is a sense of quiet confidence that reflects our collective desire for warmth, depth and belonging.

“The Pantone View Home color/design forecast, titled “Welcome Home,” reflects the universal appeal of home as both a refuge and a place for relaxation, entertainment and work. Today, homes serve not only as living spaces but also as workplaces for many.”
Leatrice Eiseman Director, Eiseman Center for Color Information and Training, Executive Director, Pantone Color Institute
In this segment, Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute and the color/design forecaster for The Inspired Home Show, shares four of the major trend directions that will resonate for consumers in 2026 and beyond.
