Is your horse slowing down, stiff, or just not himself?
Decoding the confusing world of joint supplements - it's every horse owner's worry.
It’s that moment when your once-eager companion seems a little slower coming out of the paddock, a little stiff after a ride, or just not quite himself.
Subtle changes in movement or behaviour often signal the early stages of joint discomfortsomething that can progress if left unaddressed.
With so many joint supplements on the market, it can be difficult to know what your horse truly needs.
Which ingredients really work, and how do you tell if you're choosing the right one?
Let's decode the confusion.
Understanding what's really going on
Horses are athletes by naturewhether competing, trail riding, or simply aging gracefully, their joints endure constant stress.
Cartilage cushions the bones within joints, but over time or through repetitive strain, that cushioning can thin. The result can be stiffness, reduced flexibility, or reluctance to move as freely.
The right combination of nutrients can help support comfortable movement and ongoing joint health.
What to look for in a quality joint supplement
When choosing a joint supplement, look for one that contains not just one or two of the follow-
ing ingredients - but most, or ideally all of them.
If you can find one that combines this complete blend, such as Health Within's Equine Joint Ultimate Support, you're onto a winner.
MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane): Provides bioavailable sulfur to support collagen formation and joint comfort.
Glucosamine: Supplies key building blocks for healthy cartilage.
Chondroitin: Helps maintain elasticity and cushioning within joints.
Rosehip: Naturally rich in antioxidants that support mobility and connective tissue health. Turmeric: Provides nutritional support for the body's normal inflammatory response.
Green-Lipped Mussel Powder: Asource of omega-3s to help maintain joint function and flexibility.
Choose quality, choose care Formulated through a collaboration between veterinarians, nutritionists, and herbalists who specialise in animal health, Health Within's Equine Joint Ultimate Support offers a balanced, evidence-based approach to maintaining equine joint wellbeing.

The Angel's Animals Holistic Seminars (Angel's Animals, LLC) were developed by Dr Angelique Barbara in 2009 and have been offered online since 2015. Their courses were the first online courses of their kind and paved the way for other online educational programs.
They have thousands of students and practitioners in over 30 countries.
The majority of their certified practitioners decide to enroll in additional courses with them for their continuing education because they are very satisfied with the course layout and support they receive along the way. Continuing Education (CE) credits are offered through The National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork, The International Veterinary Chiropractic Association, the International Association of Animal Massage and Bodywork/Association of Canine Water Therapy and other animal massage organizations.
These courses provide state-of-the-art learning techniques with quality, up-to-date information, making them one of the best quality online animal bodywork courses available. They offer online courses in Equine, Canine and Feline massage, acupressure, kinesiology taping, craniosacral therapy, Reiki, body alignment, cold laser therapy, aromatherapy, holistic nutrition and more.
Equine bodywork is an essential component
of whole-horse wellness, it offers a handson, therapeutic approach to help restore comfort, function and balance in the horse. It goes far beyond surface-level massage, targeting the deeper layers of fascia, musculature and connective tissue while also promoting systemic healing through circulation, lymph flow and nervous system regulation. Whether applied for general wellness, injury recovery, performance enhancement, or emotional support, equine bodywork creates space for the body to reset—naturally and non-invasively.
The benefits of equine bodywork are numerous. It enhances performance and athletic recovery, improves mobility and flexibility, relieves pain and discomfort, supports circu-
lation and detoxification, balances the nervous system, enhances behavioral and emotional wellbeing, identifies and addresses subtle imbalances early and deepens connection and trust between horse and owner.
Kinesiology taping is a modality that every animal bodywork practice can benefit from. This tape allows the practitioner to enhance their other therapies by leaving the animal with prolonged blood and lymph flow improvement, decreased pain sensation and support of joints and muscles that are suffering from instability.
Some conditions that can benefit from kinesiology tape are:
- ACLand other knee related injuries in dogs,
- Back pain in dogs and horses,
- Hind end weakness in dogs due to IVDD, -
- Spina bifida,
- Arthritis or DM,
- Suspensory ligament injuries in horses,
- Post surgical swelling in all animals and
- Stocking up in horses.
Arecent study in the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science showed a significant reduction in swelling after 24 hours of kinesiology taping in horses with arthroscopic tibio-patellofemoral surgery.
While kinesiology taping is a very safe and effective technique, there are specific ways to cut and apply the tape for the condition being treated and there are contraindications to utilizing this tape as well. Proper training is required to be able to adequately add kinesiology taping to your practice.
Kinesiology taping is safe and effective.

How to feed a horse that won’t sweat
Provided by FEEDXL
Anhydrosis, or the inability to sweat, is a serious condition that affects horses in hot and humid climates.
Horses rely heavily on sweating to cool themselves down and keep their core body temperature within a normal range. Sweat wets the horse’s skin and then as it evaporates it takes heat with it, effectively creating an evaporative cooling system for the horse.
In some horses however, for reasons largely still unknown, a horse’s sweat glands either partially or fully quit producing sweat. These horses find it very difficult to stay cool and need to resort to offloading heat via their lungs by breathing harder and faster than you would expect them to, which is why horses with this condition are often said to ‘have the puffs’.
In many situations, puffing is not effective enough, so horses that can’t sweat are at serious risk of hyperthermia which wreaks all sorts of havoc in the body and if not dealt with will eventually result in death. The right feeding strategy may help. While we don’t understand what causes anhydrosis, it appears that for some horses, certain nutritional strategies can help. Tips for feeding horses with anhydrosis include:
1. Always meet electrolyte requirements in the diet. It is likely some horses stop sweating simply because they run out of electrolytes. The major electrolytes found in sweat are sodium, chloride and potassium.
The two most commonly deficient electrolytes in a horse’s diet are sodium and chloride and these are the components of ordinary old salt.
2. Always provide access to free choice rock salt. Ahorse will seek salt out when it knows it needs it. Allow them to meet their requirements.
3. Feed controlled amounts of protein. Diets that are too high in protein have a couple of negative effects on horses that can’t sweat. The first is that protein generates a lot of heat during digestion and metabolism which adds to the heat load a horse needs to get rid of to keep its body temperature normal. The second is that when protein is fed in excess the horse needs to get rid of the excess nitrogen contained in the protein. In a healthy horse, the kidneys perform this task without hassle but a lot of water and electrolyte are excreted with the nitrogen, which potentially can lead to dehydration
and electrolyte deficiency.
4. For horses in work, consider using a lower forage diet. When the fibre in forages is fermented in the hindgut a lot of heat is produced which then increases the amount of heat a horse needs to get rid of to keep its body temperature normal.
To maintain the horse’s required energy intake you can add oil and/or cooked grains to the diet. It is essential that you feed wellcooked grains, with extruded grains being the best option, as the starch contained within these grains will be digested in the small intestine.
Feeding uncooked or poorly cooked grains will lead to a lot of fermentation and heat production in the hindgut and should be avoided for all horses in hot climates. Please note: Never reduce forage intake below 1 kg/100 kg of bodyweight.
5. Make sure the diet you feed is balanced. There is some anecdotal evidence to suggest that some mineral and vitamin deficiencies may contribute to a horse’s inability to sweat.
The best way to counteract this is to make sure what you are feeding is meeting all of your horse’s requirements for macro and trace-minerals and vitamins.
Visit www.feedxl.com to get a personalised feeding guide to help make sure you can achieve this.
If you have a horse with anhydrosis, it is strongly recommended you seek veterinary advice. Aggressive environmental management of these horses to keep them cool is the best way to manage their condition.

The Horse Report Foaling what to expect and when to call the vet
By GOLD COAST EQUINE CLINIC
As Spring continues across Queensland, breeders and horse owners eagerly await the pitterpatter of tiny hooves.
Foaling is one of the most rewarding, yet unpredictable, parts of horse breeding.
Knowing what to expect and when to intervene is vital for both mare and foal welfare.
Amare's gestation averages 340 days, though anything between 320 and 360 is normal.
During the final month, her udder will enlarge and begin to secrete sticky "wax" on the teats. The muscles around her tail head and croup soften and the vulva relaxes.
Behavioural shifts such as restlessness, isolation or lying down more frequently signal that labour is near.
The foaling process
Foaling occurs in three stages.
Stage one involves uterine contractions ,pacing, sweating0 and flank-watching and lasts up to an hour.
Stage two begins when the water breaks; the foal should be delivered within 20 minutes.
If there's no progress within that time, or if a red, velvety membrane appears before the foal (a "red bag" delivery), it's a veterinary emergency.
Stage three involves the passing of the placenta which should occur within three hours.
Retained placentas can lead to severe infection and laminitis.
After the birth
The foal should stand within an hour, nurse within two and pass meconium (first manure) within three. Ensure the placenta is intact and the mare is bright and
comfortable.
The importance of the IgG test
Newborn foals rely entirely on colostrum, their mother's first milk, for immunity.
This milk contains antibodies that protect against infections during the first critical weeks of life.
To confirm that the foal has absorbed enough antibodies, your vet can perform a Blood IgG (Immunoglobulin G) test around 12-18 hours after birth.
Levels above 800 mg/dLindicate good immunity; lower readings mean the foal may need a plasma transfusion to avoid life-
threatening infections.
When to call the vet
Contact your vet immediately if:
o Labour lasts longer than 20 minutes or there are signs of distress in the mare
o The foal is weak or fails to nurse
o The mare retains her placenta
o The foal's IgG test shows inadequate antibody transfer or you require an IgG test to be performed.
Gold Coast Equine Clinic offers full breeding and foaling services, including on-call support, neonatal checks, and IgG testing.

Feeding for healthy hooves: The key to a strong, resilient hoof
By LARISSA BILSTON, BAgrSc (Hons 1), Nutritionist, Farmalogic
"Healthy hooves don't happen by luck-they grow from the inside out."
The foundation of every step
Horses' hooves are literally the foundation of their health and performance.
Whether your horse is galloping down a crosscountry track or ambling along a trail, strong, resilient hooves make all the difference.
Weak, brittle hooves can cause cracks, discomfort, and even lameness, while healthy hooves support free, balanced movement and longterm soundness.
While genetics and environment play their parts, nutrition is one of the most powerful influences on hoof quality.
Many owners instinctively reach for a hoof supplement when faced with brittle walls or slow growth-but in most cases, the real solution lies in a well-balanced, thoughtfully formulated diet.
When supplements help and when they don't
Farriers frequently recommend hoof supplements for horses with poor hoof quality.
Sometimes that's exactly what's needed-if the diet is lacking specific nutrients. But if your horse is already eating a balanced, complete diet, adding a hoof supplement can do more harm than good.
Too much of a good thing can throw the mineral balance out of whack, interfering with absorption and causing unintended deficiencies elsewhere.
Common causes of weak or crumbly hooves include:
* Mineral deficiencies or imbalances
* Lack of omega-3 fatty acids
* Extreme wet or dry conditions
* Genetic factors
* Inconsistent or poor-quality farrier care. If a dietary gap is the culprit, then supplementation makes sense-but the goal should always be to balance the entire diet, not just fix one nutrient in isolation.
Awell-designed vitamin and mineral supplement, tailored to your horse's base feed and forage, is far more effective than a stand-alone "hoof supplement."
Quick Tip: If your horse's hooves are brittle, first check the overall diet-not just the hoof supplement shelf.
Biotin: The star of the show or just one of the cast?
"Healthy hooves don't happen by luck-they grow from the inside out."
When hoof health comes up, biotin usually takes centre stage. This B-group vitamin is essential for cell growth and keratin formationthe building blocks of hair, skin, and hoof horn. It's naturally present in forage and grains, especially fresh pasture, and is also produced by the microbes in a healthy gut.
True biotin deficiencies are rare, but research shows that supplementing with 15 to 40 mg per day can improve hoof growth and quality, especially for horses recovering from stress, illness, antibiotic treatment, or laminitis-or those with limited access to fresh pasture.
However, before rushing to add a biotin supplement, take stock of what's already in your horse's feed. Many fortified feeds and multivitamin mixes already include adequate levels. Adding more "just in case" won't speed things up-it may simply waste your money.
Whole body nutrition for whole hoof health When you feed for hoof health, you're really feeding for whole-horse health. The same nutrients that strengthen hooves also support muscle development, immune function, and energy metabolism.
It's worth remembering that hooves grow slowly - from the coronary band to the ground surface takes around nine months. That means consistency is key.
You can't "fix" hooves overnight. What you feed
today shows up months down the track as new growth.
If you've ever noticed distinct rings on your horse's hooves, those growth lines tell a story. Each ridge marks a change in diet, stress, or health. Smooth, even rings reflect balance and stability on the inside.
What makes a healthy hoof?
The hoof wall, like hair and skin, is made of keratin, a tough protein formed from amino acids and strengthened by minerals and vitamins. To grow strong hoof horn, horses need:
* High-quality protein with essential amino acids (especially methionine and lysine)
* Balanced minerals (calcium, zinc, copper and selenium are key)
* B-vitamins (especially biotin and B6)
* Essential fatty acids for flexibility and moisture balance
* Consistent energy intake for cell growth.
Let's look at how to put those pieces together.
FEED FUNDAMENTALS
1. Forage first
Good-quality pasture or hay is the base of every equine diet. It keeps the digestive system healthy and provides much of the horse's energy and protein.
However, forage alone is typically low in trace minerals like copper, zinc, iodine, and selenium-all vital for strong, elastic hoof horn. That's where a mineral supplement balancer comes in.
2. The mineral balancing act
Minerals are where things get interesting-and sometimes tricky. It's not just about having enough of each mineral; it's about keeping the ratios in balance so they can all be absorbed properly.
Calcium provides structural strength to hoof tissue and plays a key role in keratinization-the process that hardens the hoof wall. Too little leads to weak, crumbly hooves, but too much can block the absorption of other minerals like zinc and magnesium.
Zinc is critical for enzyme function and cell metabolism. Low zinc levels are strongly linked to soft or shelly hooves.
Copper supports connective tissue formation and pigmentation (coat colour).
Selenium contributes to antioxidant defences and keratin synthesis.
Sulphur (from amino acids like methionine) is an essential part of keratin's molecular structure, giving hooves their strength and flexibility.

The Horse Report
Feed for the whole horse and the hooves will follow
From page 12
To maintain balance, aim for:
Azinc-to-copper ratio of about 3:1
Acopper-to-iron ratio of around 1:7
Don't look for a mineral supplement with these ratios - the job of the supplement is to balance the whole intake to achieve ideal ratios.
Because most forages are naturally high in iron, it's best to avoid supplements that add extra iron, which can interfere with copper and zinc uptake. Selenium requires particular care-it's essential but toxic in excess.
Always follow recommended levels.
The B Vitamins: Small but mighty
Of all the B vitamins, biotin (B7) and pyridoxine (B6) are the most important for hoof integrity. Most horses synthesize enough in their hindgut, but those under stress, in hard work, or recovering from illness may need extra support.
For a 500 kg horse, 15-20 mg of biotin per day can improve hoof hardness and resilience-but only if the rest of the diet is balanced. Biotin can't work miracles on its own; it's one piece of a larger puzzle involving zinc, calcium, and overall protein quality.
The power of omega-3s
Healthy hooves also rely on omega-3 fatty acids, which contribute to the elasticity and protective barrier of the hoof wall.
Fresh grass is naturally rich in omega-3s, but dried hay and most grains are not.
To mimic a natural pasture diet, look for ways to boost omega-3 intake-linseed oil, chia seeds, or specially formulated marine-sourced omega-
Good nutrition and regular maintenance will result in healthy hooves
3 supplements are excellent options.
3. Protein power
Protein supplies the amino acids that form keratin. Most adult horses on good pasture get enough, but those in hard work or on mature or poor-quality hay may not.
The amino acids lysine, methionine, and threonine are the most important.
Great sources include lucerne and full-fat soybean meal.
These boost protein quality and provide the nutrients hooves need to grow strong and
resilient. For targeted support, you can also use amino acid supplements where required.
What to expect over time
With consistent feeding, you'll start noticing changes:
1. First few weeks: Aglossier coat and deeper colour-signs that internal balance is improving.
2. After several months: Stronger, smoother hoof walls with fewer cracks and improved growth rate.
3. Long term: Ahorse that moves more comfortably and maintains healthier feet yearround.
Of course, nutrition works hand-in-hand with good management.
Regular trimming, correct shoeing, and controlling moisture levels underfoot are still essential.
Interestingly, many horses on balanced diets become more metabolically efficient, meaning you can often reduce hard feed without losing condition-a win for health and the feed bill.
Strong, resilient hooves aren't built from a single scoop of powder.
They grow from the inside out, through balanced nutrition and consistent care.
Before reaching for the latest hoof supplement, take a step back and look at your horse's overall diet:
* Is the forage quality high?
* Are trace minerals balanced?
* Is there enough high-quality protein?
* Are omega-3s and vitamins covered?
When these elements come together, the result isn't just better hooves-it's a healthier, happier horse from head to tail.
Feed for the whole horse, and the hooves will follow.

The Horse Report
Dedicated to providing a high level of on farm veterinary care to horses in the Gold Coast and the Northern Rivers
It can be a real challenge to workout precisely what your horse requires to support him or her nutritionally without breaking the bank.
As an equine nutritionist, I often hear from clients who are overwhelmed by the myriad of products available, and the costs that can quickly add up to more than $7.50 a day. For many horse owners, this simply isn't feasible. So, how do we navigate this tight budget while ensuring our horses receive the nutrition they need to perform at their best?
Let's start with the foundation of your horse's diet: fibre.
Quality fibre is your best investment. It's not just about filling a bucket; it's about honouring your horse's natural digestive system.
The more we can feed our horses like horses, the less likely we are to face costly veterinary bills down the line.
Think about it: a diet rich in clean, dust-free fibre can help prevent conditions like gastric ulcers and colic, literally eliminate the cost and reliance on expensive prepared feeds that simply do not suit every horse, because the old saying 'one size does not fit all' is absolutely 100% correct.
But let's be real-while fibre is essential, it can't do it all. As the seasons change, the quality and availability of pasture and hay can fluctuate.
Now there is a massive shortage of hay all around Australia not to mention the price increases per bale.
This is where a good a feed like EquiCube and a balancing supplement comes into play. When selecting a feed, it's crucial to follow the manufacturer's directions.
Don't be lured in by the lower price of performance or senior feeds if you're only feeding around 500g. These feeds often require larger amounts to meet your horse's nutritional needs.
The risk here is these feeds have a recommended feed rate and they contain vitamins and minerals per kilo.
If you are not feeding the recommended feed rates, then your horse is not receiving the correct nutrient intake.
In most cases the feed rates on these bags of feed are too high and the average horse does not require that level of feed. If you underfeed or overfeed you are creating a nutritional imbalance.
Investing in a feed such as a EquiCube may just be the answer you're looking for. Not only saving money but also being in complete control of the nutritional component. Yes, it may cost more per bag but feeding it as directed can save you money in the long run by preventing deficiencies that could lead to additional health issues.
EquiCube feeds are also nutritionally dense so therefore the feed rate is naturally a lot lower than all other feeds on the market. It is very likely in these tough economic times that you will literally have your feed bill or even less this is general feedback we are receiving with this beautiful feed. What makes this feed so unique?
These feeds are all hay based and contain no byproducts or ingredients that are not suited to the species naturally.
Long stem fibre is not only the healthiest way to feed your horse, but it also supports your horses gut microbiome long term.
EquiCube is a complete feed and there is no requirement for extra chaffs only hay and pasture.
There are three feeds in the range, because why would you need more than three?
Each feed contains one of our daily supplements so you can be comfortable knowing that your horse is receiving everything that he or she needs.
The great part of this nutrition system is that you can increase and decrease the feed and increase and decrease your daily supplement to achieve the perfect nutritional support for your horse's needs individually. You will be guaranteed to not only improve your horse's health but also your pocket.
Now, let's not forget the essentials.
Every horse needs:
1. Fresh, clean water-always.
2. Omega-3 fatty acids, especially for those not grazing on pasture for long hours
AlphFlax oil is a great option.
3. And a good daily formula.
When it comes to supplements, remember that each horse is unique.
Does your horse have specific health conditions that require additional support? Are you left with a budget for a joint supplement? Be intentional about what you add to your horse's diet.
Don't simply follow the trends online; what works for one horse may not be suitable for another. And if your budget doesn't allow for extras, that's okay, focus on a solid base diet first.
We recommend our ProflamAid Plus for arthritis and joint support, 35 years of use does not lie, safe reliable and cost effective. We offer free nutritional consultations, and we have a range of specialist practitioners that can assist you.
We can help you tailor a diet that meets both your horse's needs and your budget. Peace of mind that comes from knowing you're doing right by your horse is invaluable. In conclusion, feeding horses on a budget is not only possible but can also be done effectively with a little knowledge and planning. By prioritizing quality fibre, selecting the right feeds, and being mindful of your horse's individual needs, you can ensure your equine partner thrives without straining your finances.

HERBAL TUNE UP WHY YOUR HORSE NEEDS A SEASONAL DETOX
By Karyn Campbell Naturopath & Equine Herbalist
Detoxifying your horse at the start of every season with high-quality herbs can offer several benefits, promoting overall health and well-being. Here are some reasons why this practice might be beneficial:
Remove Toxins: Over time, horses can accumulate toxins from various sources such as environmental pollutants, feed additives, and chemicals. Herbal detoxification can help remove these toxins from their bodies.
Boost Immune System: Certain herbs can strengthen the immune system, making horses more resilient to seasonal illnesses and infections.
Support Liver and Kidney Function:: The liver and kidneys are crucial for filtering out toxins. Herbs like milk thistle and dandelion can support these organs, enhancing their function.
Improve Digestion: Seasonal changes can affect a horse’s digestive system. Herbs like peppermint and fennel can aid in digestion and prevent gastrointestinal issues.
Enhance Coat and Skin Health: Detoxifying can result in a shinier coat and healthier skin, as toxins can often manifest as skin problems.
Increase Energy Levels: Removing toxins and improving organ function can lead to higher energy levels and better overall vitality.
Reduce Inflammation: Some herbs have anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce inflammation and associated pain, particularly beneficial for older horses or those with joint issues.
Adapt to Seasonal Changes: As seasons change, so do the demands on a horse’s body. Detoxifying can help them adjust more smoothly to changes in weather, diet, and activity levels.
It's essential to use high-quality herbs to ensure the best results and avoid potential contaminants. Consulting with a Equine Herbalist before starting a detox regimen is also recommended to tailor the approach to your horse's specific needs and health conditions.

Tips & tricks for keeping horses cool
By THE HORSE HERBALIST
To keep you horse cool during the day, ensure there is good shade and airflow available throughout the day, whether natural or manufactured.
Tarps and shade sails can offer respitewhether strung up or draped. If the horses are in stables or barns, use misters or fans. Work as early in the day as possible or later in the evening if the temperature has dropped.
After work, or if the horse is hot in the paddock, hose down with cool water paying particular attention to the jugular veins in the neck and the saphenous veins on the inside of the hindlegs.
Always scrape your horse down after hosing as even a light coating of water acts as an insulator to retain body heat. Repeat this if necessary.
Shade, hosing then scraping, with a breeze or a fan reduces core temperature quickly. Offer fresh cool water and water containing electrolytes. Let them choose which they prefer.
Days when humidity is high are even worse as humidity keeps the sweat from evaporating so the horse's natural cooling system can't be effective.
Overweight horses have a harder time dealing with high temperatures and humidity as added body fat acts as insulation. If you can't avoid working or competing in high temperatures do all of the above. Give homeopathic Glonoine to clear any head congestion bought on by heat and exertion. Hand walk for 15 minutes to stop muscle cramping.
WHAT NOT TO DO:
Rugs have their place but it is not on a horse on hot or humid days. The rug as acts as an insulator, trapping the heat and exacerbating the situation.
The horse's core temperature increases and the heat cannot escape or sweat evaporate (horses prefer to be naked).
Do not leave the horse sweating under a rug. Sweat serves an important purpose for both horses and humans - as the moisture of the sweat evaporates, and the skin cools.
After work, or if the horse is hot in the paddock, hose down with cool water
WHAT
IS HEAT STRESS?
Know the signs:
* Rapid shallow respiration, flared nostrils
* Look of anxiety
* Confusion
* High temperature
* High Heart Rate
* Excess sweating or no sweating
* Dehydration - do pinch test*
* Lack of coordination
* Trembling
* Pinch the skin (normally on the neck although shoulder is also recommended), if it springs back to flat rapidly, there is no problem.
But if it is slow to restore (more than 3 seconds), your horse may be dehydrated.
In extreme cases call the vet.
For homeopathic treatment give homeopathic Aconite 6c. and Glonoine 6c. to reduce above symptoms - repeat dose every 15 minutes. The homeopathics will not interact with any veterinary treatments which may be given. Stop dosing immediately when the horse shows improvement.
While waiting, use iced water, paying particular attention to the jugular vein in neck, the saphenous veins on the inside of the hind legs, behind the ears and face.
Hose - scrape down - fan, repeat these steps every 15 minutes until vital signs are normal and he's cool to touch between the front legs. Hand walk for 15 minutes to minimise muscle cramping then put in the shade with a breeze, mister or fan.
Check frequently.
Severe heat stress can lead to:
Muscle cramping, Colic, Diarrhoea, Collapse - shock and death

What makes Rose-Hip Vital Equine stand
There are in fact many reasons. It all starts with the humble Rosehip, the berry-like fruit of the wild rose bush species Rosa Canina. A wholefood known to be one of nature’s richest sources of natural vitamin C. A superfood containing 8 naturally occurring vitamins (including C, E, B1 and B6) and 23 minerals (including iron, copper, zinc and magnesium), essential fatty acids (omegas 3, 6 and 9),
You may already know rosehips are often fed to horses for immune system support and a
improved circulation and improved digestive function. So you’re probably wondering what makes Rose-Hip Vital® so special?
Rose-Hip Vital® is made from Rosehips manufactured with patented extraction and drying processes which isolate and activate a galactolipid (fatty acid) called GOPO®. GOPO® has clinically proven anti-
The patented processes also concentrate and preserve the naturally occurring vitamins and minerals, transforming Rose-Hip Vital® into a product that is both in a category all on its own, and across many; It’s a joint
antioxidant and a nutritional supplement. It delivers noticeable improvements to mobility, mood, condition, willingness to move forward, performance and recovery while reducing
improving general health and wellbeing, and boosting immunity.
Rose-Hip Vital® is a clinically proven plantand rich source of natural vitamin C. There is no product like it. Unlike other joint supplements, Rose-Hip Vital® is 100% plant-
Rose-Hip Vital® is safe for long term use and it does not swab. It can be used alongside conventional treatments and supplements as well as potentially replacing or reducing the medication.
Horses like it so much, even the fussiest of eaters become more enthusiastic about their feed once Rose-Hip Vital is added. So while Rose-Hip Vital Equine has become a highly use, it also has become highly recommended for improving general health and wellbeing, improving performance and maintaining healthy joints.
How does Rose-Hip Vital® Equine lengthen the lifetime of a working horse?
Vital is comprehensive. There are in excess of placebo controlled clinical trials on people, dogs and horses mainly focusing on antithe unique compound GOPO.
To many people, antioxidants and anti-aging go hand-in-hand. Antioxidants are talked about as the antidote to cell-damaging free radicals. Exercise and the associated stress and increase in oxygen consumption are linked to an increased production of free radicals. When the production of free radicals overwhelms the body’s antioxidant defences, oxidative stress can occur with subsequent
research shows horses need natural vitamin C to help block toxic free radical activity, which causes damage throughout the body including joints and cartilage.
Some white blood cells in the body contain granulocytes which enable them to ‘clean’
bacteria in it. Too many of these white blood cells wear down tissue cartilage. In large numbers they can also produce chemical enzymes and toxic freeradicals which cause even more tissue damage. Excess accumulation of white blood cells combined with the release of chemical substances cause’s joint pain
The more becomes, the more the white blood cells are attracted to it –a painful cycle.
protects cartilage. This means it helps to delay the onset of arthritic changes or slow down further cartilage degeneration if it already exists.
In short, if you want to extend the lifetime of your working horse, feed it a natural antirich source of natural vitamin C. Rose-Hip Vital® Equine is your only option, and the results speak for themselves.
As the demand for horse agistment across Australia surges, a new Australian platform is working hard to help horse owners find agistment quicker and easier than ever.
For a long time, finding safe and affordable agistment has proven to be difficult for hundreds of horse owners across the nation, as rising land and lifestyle costs push more people to turn towards shared paddocks and spelling arrangements.
Until now, many owners relied on word of mouth, Facebook posts or local community noticeboards.
Anew Australian website has been launched that helps connect property owners with spare paddocks to horse owners looking for agistment.
Farmshare Agistment is a new free community platform created by Queensland couple Georgia and David from Warwick.
The idea for the platform came about after a bushfire tore through the region, and people were desperately searching for safe agistment options for their livestock and horses.
Eager to help out the local community, David and Georgia created the free platform to help connect people with spare paddocks for agistment with those who needed it.
However, what started out as a local project, has quickly gained traction across the Australian equine industry.
"We have been blown away with the response from the horse community," David said.
"We started the website to help people out who were having a rough time with the bushfires.
But the website has really taken off across Australia."
Since creating the website, the couple posted to a few local Facebook groups, and now thousands of people are using the platform every week to find agistment, with over 160 properties that have now listed on the website.
Property owners, from small acreages to farms, are also seeing the benefit, as they're able to earn additional income from spare and underutilised land, with no listing or platform fees.
"We're seeing a whole range of properties being listed on the website," Georgia said.
"From single paddocks with spots for one horse to established agistment businesses."
Farmshare gives property owners the ability to list their own agistment, where they can set their price, set a general location and detail the facilities and care available, in just a couple of minutes at no listing cost.
Property owners can also choose whether they support long term or short term agistment, or overnight stays.
Horse owners can then search the platform by location to quickly find suitable paddocks with the care and facilities that match their needs.
"It's important to us that we keep the platform with no listing fees," David said.
"We started the website out to help our neighbours and we want to continue providing that service."
The next step for Farmshare Agistment is to continue growing in the agricultural community so that listing and finding agistment is made easier for everybody.
"We have agistment listings from all over Australia except the Northern Territory. So we would
love expand into the NT and get some listings," said Georgia. You can explore the Farmshare Agistment platform at www.thefarmshare.com.
It's a great way to find agistment, or offer a spare paddock. It's quick and easy and completely free!

BONE Gold nutritional bone joint and collagen supplement was formulated to provide some of the essential amino acid requirements of collagen type I, II and III (found in bone and connective tissue) in addition to supporting the nitric oxide pathway which has been found to assist in the formation of bone callus postinjury.
Veterinary surgeons have recommended that Bone Gold may assist with sore shins, tendon injuries, ligament injuries, osteoarthritis and post-surgery in horses and polyarthritis, geriatric osteoarthritis, and post-surgery in dogs.
Here is a veterinary radiographic report on a horse with a fracture evident on the medial toe and after treatment and feeding Bone Gold during this period. More information on these products can be found at www.vetgold.com.au
VETERINARY RADIOGRAPHIC REPORT
HORSE: "XXXXXXXX"
DATES OF EXAMINATION: 26TH AUG, 21ST OCT 21 & 17TH NOV '21

XXXXXXX's left and right front feet were radiographed on 26th Aug, 21st Oct (8 weeks) and again on the 17th Nov '21(12 weeks).
RADIOGRAPHS:
26.08.21: Right Front: Large P3 solar margin fracture evident on medial toe 32.6mm x 4.1mm with approximately 1.4mm separation from parent bone as below left image.
21.10.21: Right Front: Fine residual 4.2mm fracture still evident, approximately 90% resolution
17.11.21: Right Front: Fracture fully resolved
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Radiographic results as of the 17th Nov '21 show total resolution of the original fracture.
XXXXXXX was reshod today utilising off an alloy shoe with a toe clip - inner circumference seated out to avoid any sole pressure.
The horse can return to training. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further queries
COMMENTS:
Solar margin Type IV fractures of this magnitude have well-documented internationally published healing rates of 7 - 12 months. Full resolution of these fractures is rare as most often the fracture fragments are resorbed.
Full resolution in a 3 month period was not anticipated.
The horse was on Bone Gold 3 x scoops fed once per day for this period.

“BYE BYE FLY”
QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.
The usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).
While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin.
Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).
Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.
The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.
KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways:
Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin.
It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and Camphor oil” which naturally relieves itchy skin.
Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies.
Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites.
Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.
These significant benefits are also enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can also be applied to surface wounds, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help prevent irritation and possible infection by nuisance insects.
Registered by the APVMA in Australia for over 40 years, extensive field experience has proven KURITCH to be a most effective solution for both preventing and healing distressing skin conditions caused by biting insects.
As well as KURITCH as a repellent, environmental management will also assist in protecting your horse.
Midges breed near stagnant water. As they don’t fly more than a few hundred metres from their breeding area, housing or paddocking your horses more than 500 metres from those areas will reduce their exposure to the flies.

Whether for competition, sale, breeding, or veterinary care, horse transport by float is a necessity in modern equestrian life.
Yet beyond our desire for a calm travel experience, lies a body of evidence showing that even short trips can carry significant risks to equine health and welfare.
Studies suggest that transport-related illness affects a significant proportion of horses at some point in their lives.
Even brief trips can elicit a higher frequency of balance and stress related behaviors when compared to stable and rest stop behavior. Increases in travel duration, rough roads and the length of confinement, further contribute to the stress and anxiety experienced, which can be a significant contributor to negative health outcomes.
Horses can develop travel anxiety and may become difficult to load and unload further increasing the stress responses of fight-orflight reactions.
Musculoskeletal Fatigue can be another damaging result. Data from veterinary reports show that over 25% of transportrelated injuries occur in the hind limbs of the animal, with a disproportionate number linked to poor road surfaces, inadequate float suspension, or even when the vehicle is turning a corner.
ANew Zealand study found that 15-20% of horses sustained visible injuries per trip,

Achieving a smoother ride for horses and handlers
Transport-related illness affects a large proportion of horses at some point in their lives.
while a much higher number suffered from temporary gait stiffness, muscle soreness, anxiety, and unfortunately most of these symptoms are considered an unfortunate and unavoidable result of necessary horse transport.
Constant balancing during transport: Horses use their muscles like surfers do to stay upright when being transported, which can cause fatigue, muscle stiffness, and soreness.
* Joint strain: Especially if the journey is long and the horse can't shift weight easily. The dynamic shockwave created between the tow vehicle and float at the tow bar point
while traveling, is consistently transferred through the horses' legs.
* Debilitating pain: While the exact percentage of horses experiencing pain during transport varies, studies indicate that a high proportion certainly experience significant pain and discomfort which understandably can led to a range of negative outcomes for the animal.
The data speaks plainly: transporting a horse in a float is not a neutral act. It is an intervention with a calculable risk profile - one that owners, trainers, and event organisers must respect.
Safer suspension systems, improved ventilation, enforced rest breaks, and better driver training are not luxuries; they are the statistical antidotes to an avoidable welfare cost. Within the industry of equine transport, comfort and safety are key points highlighted in sales brochures, however not all floats are alike.
Many offer superior suspension systems claiming to provide the animal with a smoother ride, however all horse floats come with a static tow connection.
Very little has been done to reduce the severe forces being applied at the tow point between the float and the tow vehicle.
Enter Oz Glide, an Australian-made dampening innovation that's quietly transforming the horse float industry.

Horsemanship and self-development
By TANJA KRAUS
I’ve always been a huge advocate and student of self-development.
I have had horseriding lessons since I was 12, I’ve attended countless clinics and seminars both to do with equestrian pursuits and not.
I think one of the simplest things to help with our horsemanship is to have a good understanding of how we want to exist with our horse, how horses think and learn and finding the unity between those two worlds.
If you are a soft-spoken, quiet and gentle person, then to pursue a training method that requires you to be aggressive and dominant is not going to work, and hey it will work for a short time, but eventually the hard work and mental load that it takes for you to be someone you are not will take its toll, and your relationship with your horse will be compromised.
On the flip side if you are brash, loud and forceful, to try and embrace a style that is rooted in softness is not going to work for you either.
The first key is to sit on what you actually want.
How you actually want to be with your horse.
Years of training may have made you
aggressive, and maybe that’s not how you want to be, or maybe years of training has made you passive and that is not how you want to be.
The second step is to learn more about how your horse thinks, learns and operates. And when I say your horse, I mean
horses in general. Each horse has their individual personality traits, but fundamentally they are all horses, all prey animals and all driven by the same needs, Once you know these two things, you can begin to work on finding a way to be with your horse that works for both of you.
The simplest thing to help our horsemanship is to understand how we want to exist with our horse.

The Horse Report
A smoother ride by addressing float motion impact
From page 32
While the focus in horse transport has traditionally been on size, ventilation, and loading ease, Oz Glide addresses a long-overlooked but critical component: "motion impact".
Horse floats, by nature, are subjected to a constant barrage of vibration, jarring road bumps and instability which are transferred between the tow vehicle and float when a static coupling is used.
These continuous dynamic impacts are incredibly stressful for horses, regardless of distances travelled, and can lead to fatigue, anxiety, injury, or a reluctance to load.
Oz Glide tackles this challenge head-on by incorporating a sophisticated dampening system designed to absorb and reduce kinetic forces during transit.
The result is a smoother, quieter, and stable ride-something that both horses and handlers will immediately feel the difference.
Oz Glide is a Queensland-based, family business, developed by Barry Blumke and his family.
Oz Glide has already established itself in the caravan and trailer industry as a safety necessity rather than an optional accessory, and when applied to a horse float, it adds an unequalled humane capacity when transporting horses.
Oz Glide offers safer towing for everyone, whilst ensuring the highest possible quality and performance remain their focus
Reducing these dynamic vibrations and
shocks means:
* less strain on the structure of the tow vehicle and float chassis,
* greater stability in steering and ride comfort in the tow vehicle;
* extending the life of float suspension systems, interior fittings, and flooring
* reduced vibrations, shocks and bumps for horses during floating; and
* reducing travel anxiety, injury, stress and fatigue for your horse;
Oz Glide is as much a safety feature, as it is a performance upgrade. For trainers, breeders, and competitive riders who travel frequently and value the health of their horses, this advancement could mean the difference
between a fresh, focused animal and one that is stressed, stiff and less able to perform upon arrival.
Importantly, Oz Glide's innovation is grounded in its Australian design and manufacturing. It's a system crafted with care for Australian horse owners and the unique terrain they navigate
Oz Glide is a breath of fresh air -a technical upgrade that doesn't just modernize horse floats but redefines what humane, safe, and efficient equine transport should feel like. It may well become the new gold standard for those who truly care about what happens between the paddock and the destination.
The Tweed Heads Pony started out in 1964 on grounds at Endless Summer estate then moved into Tweed Heads where the Tweed Holiday park now operates. Then in 1975 moved to the the grounds they now operate out of in Sussyer Ave Tweed Heads just down the road from PFD Foods the site of the Old Twin Towns Drive in Theatre. So this year marks 50 years operating on these grounds, while in the past few year the club has been low on numbers and not held events it is now making a comeback. Recently a new committee took over, secured the lease from the Airport rectified the bank
accounts and commenced a huge clean up and fundraising campaign to get he club back up and running ready to take on new members, run rally days and events and again offer agistment to its members in 2026.
This club and its grounds are a unique facility close to the border with acres of prime flat fertile grazing paddocks, a great club house, toilet and showers, dressage arena, trotting track, stables and yards a round yard and wash bays and all the gear needed to run a gymkhana.
They are holding an open day on Saturday 15th November, so come pop in and say hi.

Madge is a rare find — a small TB mare with a lovely temperament, correct conformation, and genuine show-ring potential. She is soft, sweet-natured, and very straightforward to handle both on the ground and under saddle.
Aconsistent and reliable ride, Madge is at the very beginning of her showing career but already boasts impressive results — including winning at her first Royal Show under extremely challenging conditions without putting a foot wrong. Her most recent results include winning her novice and open hack 15-15.2hh class at Brisbane Royal 2025.
She would suit a capable teen rider or an adult looking for an uncomplicated and honest mare to enjoy and produce. However is not a beginners horse and does require a confident rider still. With limited outings due to work commitments, she’s only been lightly shown and would thrive in a home with time to bring out her full potential. Easy to handle in every way

Prince is well educated and competitive, consistently placing in the top of the line up. He is qualified for GN 2026 and all Royals.
Prince requires little work down even at the biggest shows, is unfazed by rides and show jumpers, but does require a confident and capable rider to get the best out of him.
He has been competed by my 13 and 15 year old daughters who are capable child riders.
Prince is fine to be taken to shows on his own or in company. Easy to prep, shoe, float etc.

Frankie is a beautiful modern type of show pony with an absolutely amazing temperament, nothing seems to faze her – side shows, fireworks, chainsaws etc. She is a great sand and mud runner and is excellent to ride bareback and on trail rides. It’s time for our little Flynn to move on to new beginnings with another lucky person.
We have owned Flynn since 3 years old and he has been a pleasure to do anything with. He’s easy to wash, trim, load and float, happily stands at the float all day when out.
He’s been shown in hand and under saddle at many shows and always comes home in the ribbons.
Flynn will make a great child’s show and rider mount, he happily sits in a natural frame and moves over the ground beautifully, he is also suited to a small adult to enjoy as well.
Flynn is a much loved family member and will be very missed, because of this home is most important and price can be negotiated if the home is right.

Susie is a delightful mare, easy to do anything with, catch, float, farrier and clip. She has attended riding Clinics, Pony Club (loves to jump) and done trail rides. She has been ridden by a young teenager but would be best suited to an adult to take her further in her career.
Susie has the most expressive floating trot couple with her pretty pony head she catches the judges eye She has attended many Shows (easily qualifies for Royals) Excels in led classes and has had many champions in both open Galloway and breed classes, however Susie does get tense under saddle in the busy ring environment and requires a more assertive rider to guide her through. She is a young mare and will have a huge future in the right home. She would also excel at Dressage which may best suit her.
She also would prove to be a great broodmare with her outstanding bloodlines She comes as a package with her made to measure Black Country 16 in Saddle and David Quayle made to measure bridle. Please no time wasters

With beauty, movement, and an enviable show record, ‘Tucker’is a superb coloured Galloway who will shine in a competitive show home. Triple registered, he is 4yo and has recently measured just under 14.2hh. Lightly shown with enormous success as a halter horse, Tucker’s accolades include Australian National Champion, Supreme at the Melbourne Summer Horse Show, and Supreme at Barastoc HOTY, with numerous other Champion and Supreme titles to his credit. These already impressive achievements offer only a taste of what is ahead.

An exceptional opportunity awaits to purchase a beautiful big moving small show galloway. Ned was bred by Lily's stud, educated and campaigned by Margot Haynes for his first season.
Great to trim, worm, float and handle in general. Ned is young and forward moving and would be most suited to an experienced rider due to this.

Introducing Farley, a Shetland that proves unicorns really do exist. We purchased Farley three years ago for my then three year old daughter as a first pony. Over the last three years he has taught Ruby how to ride progressing from leadline to off lead independent riding. Farley epitomises the characteristics of a first pony. Absolutely no bite, buck, kick or nasties. Happy to be brushed, washed and loved for hours by the tiniest humans and stands very still and patiently. He’s not a kick along pony but you would describe him as more woah than go. Always happy to move forward but will never do more than asked. Always handled by children and can be left unsupervised with your little ones. Easy to catch, wash, clip, float. Farley is no stranger to the show ring. Easily qualifies for all royals and is already qualified for 2026 royals in both led and ridden classes. Farley is being sold as my daughter is now ready to progress onto a larger pony. If we had more space we would keep him but our 2.5 acres doesn’t allow us the space to keep him unfortunately. Farley will only be sold to the very best of homes who will love him as much as we do.

Tony is a top show hunter pony that will make a huge star in the future. He has outstanding movement, and is very comfy and easy to ride. Tony has been shown by both an adult and a 10yo, and competed in leading rein, qualifying for EAnationals in his first season.
Tony has competed successfully in dressage, loves to jump and go on trail rides. My 2yo son rides Tony on the lead and he is very sensible. He has huge potential to be an amazing child’s/first ridden/leading rein pony with more education and exposure.
Although Tony has a lovely nature and easy to do everything with, we feel Tony would be best suited to a family who has a small adult, older child or rider that is able to further his education and make him into an amazing child’s pony he is already becoming. Because of this, he will not be sold to any beginners or inexperienced homes.
This is a heartbreaking sale and Tony is only for sale as my son isn’t overly interested, therefore we feel Tony is being wasted, when he should be loved by another family.
