SLACK NO MORE

Much has changed in Sun Valley, especially during what was once called “slack”—the few months after summer ends and before fall begins to fade— when we gear up for the snow to fly and slow down a bit on life. The downtime feels shorter each year, but with such a busy life in our small mountain town, there are still interesting happenings and events that keep us engaged for good reasons.

With new dates, the Sun Valley Film Festival will occur from December 3 to 7 and will feature a new film, Dead Man’s Wire, by renowned filmmaker Gus Van Sant, this year’s Vision Award honoree. Alongside Van Sant, several other notable filmmakers, actors, and groundbreaking talents will attend.

Read about honorees and Sun Valley residents Scott and Carol Glenn, who received the Harriman Award in September, with a sneak peek of his latest film, Eugene the Marine. Discover special events, including an AI panel, educational outreach for aspiring filmmakers, SVJr winners, film premieres, and details on how to attend in 2025 in our Festival section. This three-month edition also spotlights artists and writers who have participated in residencies at the Ernest and Mary Hemingway House operated by The Community Library, which includes the Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency and Ballet Sun Valley. Looking toward the community, this issue of SVPN offers insight and inspiration about Mountain Humane as more than just a shelter for adopting pets, as well as how Penny Weiss discovered a local business in Valley events. In addition, up in Stanley, get ready for some stargazing with a new observatory.

A deep dive into the Wood River Valley’s art scene highlights a vibrant Now Showing section with new works from Saddletree Gallery and local artist Bex Wilkinson. At the Sun Valley Museum of Art, numerous events run through December, and SVPN ’s Calendar of Events and Arts Etc. sections feature new ski films, what’s at The Argyros, and more entertainment throughout the Valley.

Jan Super is an expert bookkeeper with more than 12 years of experience. She has provided full bookkeeping services for many clients in the Wood River Valley and has spent many years volunteering for the Hailey and Ketchum/Sun Valley Chambers of Commerce. When not behind the camera, she is creating nourishing meals for her family.

AURORA WILKINSON is a current student at Montana State University, receiving a degree in creative writing. As a Sun Valley native, she has used her love for the Mountain West to generate writing that expresses its nuanced beauty. After graduation, she plans on working in a creative field to help bring awareness to the importance of community living.

ERIN ROBERTS started her career as a newspaper photojournalist, which she credits for her honest and straightforward approach to photography and her willingness to do anything to get the shot. She loves living in Sun Valley with her husband and three dogs.

LORI WILLIAMS is a freelance writer, copy editor, former home educator, and fourth-generation Idahoan who has lived in Ketchum since 1986. She is an Idaho Writers Guild award-winning poet and a self-published children’s book author. Besides writing, she loves climbing mountains, family road trips, green tea, and this incredible state.

Gosh, we seem to be on edge these days. Everywhere we look, people are on the go, tensely glancing at their cell phones, rushing off to who knows where.

Perhaps one of the greatest ironies of our time is that the very technology that was originally designed to bring us closer together has been so instrumental in driving us apart. Sadly, it feels like we are more connected to our intrusive devices than we are to each other.

Could the king of angst be our cell phone addiction? Do we ever leave home without it? Like the internet, it too is packed with information that yanks us from the present and catapults us somewhere into the fearful future. Just when we are beginning to feel relaxed, our phones goes beckon, begging for our attention, often interrupting what we are thinking or doing or not doing when we would rather just be.

Certainly, the instantaneous transmission of the latest “Breaking News” keeps us on edge. How long did it take us to learn of the horrors of 9/11, which destroyed our sense of invincibility? How long did it take us to learn of the explosive contagion of COVID and the lives lost in the months that followed? How many images have we seen of the death and destruction in both Gaza and Ukraine? Who wouldn’t feel angst when under the deluge of nonstop disasters?

How about the Democratic and Republican parties? It feels like both have been hijacked by the crazies, neither speaking to the vast majority of us who remain firmly anchored in the middle. Of course, this dysfunction creates a feeding frenzy for the media, addressing only the far right and the far left, leaving the rest of us downstream from an avalanche of nonstop bickering.

Perhaps most discomforting in all of this is our lack of trust. It is increasingly difficult for us as Americans to trust that our government is “by and for the people” and that the media is giving us just “the truth and nothing but the truth.” In the ensuing vacuum, we are left to decide for ourselves who to trust and who not to trust. While that may be a good thing, that too leaves us feeling disconnected and anxious.

Then again, we might ask ourselves: Do we read what we read or watch what we watch in order to be informed? Or have we gotten intellectually lazy in this regard and just keeping reading and watching the same ole, same ole? Maybe we just enjoy the soap opera aspect of it all?

Our world is beginning to feel more and more like a hot mess, both here at home and abroad. It is becoming ever more crucial that we stay connected to each other, to remind ourselves of the value of friends and family, and to be ever mindful that the only real control we have is over our own attitudes.

Only by affirming and nurturing our personal and trusting connections can we remove ourselves from the angst and edginess of the outside world raging on around us. Then and only then can we become masters of our own destinies. 

ABOUT BILL BISHOP

Propelled by my intense curiosity, I have wondered and wandered throughout my muddled life. After graduating from the University of Colorado, there was a stint in the Army, followed by spending well over a year driving around the world with an Aussie buddy in a VW bug. The experience was a prelude to becoming a lawyer, then a judge, then a mediator. An accomplished golfer, I have always had a passion for the great outdoors; my love of hunting and fishing led to the creation of Silver Creek Outfitters. Now, deep into the back nine of life, I relish being a keen observer of the world we all inhabit and particularly enjoy playing the conflicting roles of provocateur and peacemaker.

44th Annual Sun Valley Wine Auction

Supporting arts education is always a celebration in Sun Valley. This summer, the Sun Valley Museum of Art’s 44th Annual Sun Valley Wine Auction, Art & Wine, held June 24–26, included eleven events over three days and brought together art lovers, wine enthusiasts, vintners, chefs, and culinary connoisseurs in support of the Sun Valley Museum of Art (SVMoA). Guests enjoyed signature events including the River Ranch Wine Walk, intimate Vintner Dinners, and the lively Wine Auction Gala, all set against the stunning backdrop of the Wood River Valley. Since its founding in 1981, the Wine Auction has been a vital source of support for SVMoA, funding exhibitions and arts education programs that reach more than 4,000 students each year throughout Blaine County and central Idaho. Thanks to the generosity of participants and donors, the week’s events guarantee access to world-class contemporary art and inspiring arts education for the entire community. 

We are thrilled to welcome you to the 14th edition of the Sun Valley Film Festival—and to our exciting new chapter as we officially move to early December.

When we launched the Sun Valley Film Festival in 2012, we partnered with the Sun Valley Resort to create a spring celebration that would bring visitors to this magnificent valley during a traditionally quieter season. What we couldn’t have anticipated was how dramatically the landscape would change. Sun Valley’s profile has soared in recent years, culminating in the incredible honor of hosting the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup Finals earlier this year. The area’s popularity and awareness have reached unprecedented heights.

As we looked toward the future and examined our calendar with fresh eyes, early December emerged as the perfect, strategic opportunity. This timing allows us to position the Festival as a must-attend destination on the awards season circuit, providing a terrific platform to showcase the films that will define this year’s award conversations. The timing also creates unique opportunities to engage with Academy voters who call Sun Valley their second home or visit regularly, bringing together the industry’s most influential voices in an intimate, authentic setting.

From a tourism perspective, early December represents that sweet spot we’ve always sought—a time when we can drive meaningful visitation during a quieter period, while simultaneously kicking off the holiday season in spectacular fashion. There’s something truly magical about Sun Valley in early December, with its enchanting winter wonderland atmosphere providing the perfect backdrop for incredible films, unforgettable parties, and thought-provoking panels.

This move to December is more than just a scheduling change—it’s a strategic evolution that honors our original mission while embracing new possibilities. We’re positioning the Sun Valley Film Festival to become the premier awards season destination, where the year’s most compelling cinema meets the unmatched beauty and hospitality of Sun Valley.

INSIDE THE MIND OF GUS VAN SANT

If you’re familiar with a Gus Van Sant film, and many are, you connect with a storyteller whose talent for filmmaking runs deep with an uncanny perception of the world and the present moment. As a cinema artist, Gus Van Sant’s vision is a collaboration of elements that come together on screen in a way that sets him apart and places him in a realm of filmmaking excellence. If there ever was a true visionary, it is Gus Van Sant.

Van Sant is the creative force behind innovative and forward-thinking films that have launched careers and stories that last, whether they are true, fictional, or a mix of both. He makes his movies with a focus on how a story is executed through techniques, artistry, talent, and an understanding of delivery to captivate an audience.

His many features include: Drugstore Cowboy, My Own Private Idaho, Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, To Die For, Gerry, Elephant, Paranoid Park, Milk, winning Best Screenplay and an Oscar for Sean Penn, Restless, and Good Will Hunting, winning Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay, and nominated for Best Picture and Best Director at the Academy Awards.

Dead Man’s Wire is Van Sant’s latest film, featuring Bill Skarsgård, Dacre Montgomery, Colman Domingo, and Al Pacino as they bring to life Gus Van Sant’s new retelling of the strange, captivating true story of the 1977 kidnapping that turned aspiring Indianapolis entrepreneur Tony Kiritsis into an eccentric outlaw folk hero.

In films like To Die For, Elephant, and Milk, Van Sant has used cinema to reflect American life in all its extremes and complexities. Featuring compelling performances from Bill Skarsgård, Oscar nominee Colman Domingo, and Oscar winner Al Pacino (also at the Festival in Easy’s Waltz), Dead Man’s Wire marks Van Sant’s return to the based-on-realevents approach, tapping into the culture’s craving for fringe idols who try to take power from the privileged elite.

“It is a main objective that many of my films feature simultaneously likable and unlikable characters,” says Van Sant. “I think people are used to having a character you like because you don’t like them. It is a genre of storytelling that has been around for a long time.” He adds, “When you are making a film, you have choices, but you may not be conscious of these decisions and their outcomes. I am trying to tell the story as directly as possible. It’s always essentially about storytelling, not about guessing the job of storytelling or projecting it into the next 20 years. I am trying to sum up the characters in the stories as icons of their types. These are types of characters you would find throughout history, with each character being iconographic, representing elements from the past as well as the future, so it keeps that freshness.”

Dead Man’s Wire is set in February 1977. After falling behind on his mortgage and losing the commercial property he dreamed of developing, aspiring Indianapolis entrepreneur Tony Kiritsis (Bill Skarsgård) arrives for a meeting with Meridian Mortgage Company president Richard Hall (Dacre Montgomery). Tony is expecting to meet Hall Sr. (Al Pacino), but instead, the Meridian founder is enjoying a luxury vacation in Florida, fueling Tony’s frustration even more.

As Austin Kolodney’s (Funny or Die) feature screenwriting debut, Dead Man’s Wire powerfully reflects current class resentments. It’s also darkly funny, highly entertaining, and filled with appealing supporting characters, especially Colman Domingo, who portrays Fred Temple, a beloved local disc jockey whom Tony manages to involve in the negotiations. Inspired by a progressive rock station based in New York City that Van Sant listened to growing up, the character exemplifies a DJ from that era, a mesmerizing character in stature and tone.

Van Sant says, “The music was hard to find because the sentiment of the film was difficult to represent with its suspense, comedy, action, and thriller parts. It didn’t have one genre of music, and at the same time, it was an embarrassment of riches because so many pieces of music worked really well, so it was hard to choose.”

Using found footage and recreated footage shot with the similar cameras from the 1970s, Van Sant evokes a sense of place and time. With a music score by Danny Elfman, with whom Van Sant has worked many times, the film further transports the viewer.

“Tony Kiritsis has fans toward the end, and in the original story, he connected with those people who were angry at their own mortgage companies,” says Van Sant. “How this story is set in 1977 is related to what is happening today with people’s frustrations, similar to someone like Luigi Mangione.

THE TALENTED SCOTT AND CAROL GLENN

Scott and Carol Glenn have supported the Sun Valley Film Festival (SVFF) since it started in 2012 , beginning with the premiere of Magic Valley, directed by Jaffe Zinn, produced by SVFF founding board member Heather Rae Priest, and filmed in the Twin Falls area. Over the years, Scott and Carol Glenn have continued to support the Festival with films starring Scott, including his latest film, Eugene the Marine, which had a special sneak peek screening at The Argyros on August 28 as part of the Sun Valley Film Festival’s Monthly Movies series. To celebrate their achievement, friends and family attended a sold-out screening that featured a Q&A with longtime friend Priest.

In recognition of their lasting influence on the Sun Valley community and the arts, SVFF awarded the Harriman Award to Scott and Carol Glenn. Always by her husband’s side, renowned ceramist Carol Glenn has supported Scott’s career since they first met.

At 86 and a former Marine, Scott plays Eugene, who lives alone in his large old house with his wife’s ashes on the fireplace mantel. His confrontational son, Andrew (Jeremy Bobb), wants him to sell the house and even hires a shady real estate agent (Jim Gaffigan) to show his father an assisted-living facility. But proud Eugene refuses to consider it. Even when he hears strange noises inside the walls, he begins drilling holes to investigate.

Scott Glenn’s career includes notable roles in Nashville, Apocalypse Now, Urban Cowboy, The Right Stuff, Silverado, The Silence of the Lambs, The Hunt for Red October, and Training Day, among others. He has also appeared in shows like The Leftovers and, more recently, White Lotus, for which he received an Emmy nomination. 

Having its world premiere at the 2025 Sun Valley Film Festival, Go Forward is a 30-minute documentary short about the intersection of grief and sports, exemplified by Isaiah Thomas’s 2017 playoff run after his sister Chyna’s tragic death in a car accident. The film examines Isaiah’s personal journey through grief and his extraordinary performance during the first two rounds of the NBA playoffs.

With his work on Go Forward, Thomas aims to help people cope with grief and mental health issues. Through touching interviews with Isaiah, his father, coaches, and others, everyone shares their truth to guide the film.

Isaiah Thomas shares what is happening behind the scenes during the playoffs, when his sister Chyna was killed, offering an inside look at the grieving process for a professional athlete and the pressures that come with this level of performance.

“The guiding principle for this project is that everyone has their own truth when dealing with grief, and how each person responds to it is valid and different,” says Go Forward producer Sam Widdoes. “It’s very human, and Isaiah is heroic in the telling of this life moment as powerful as the night he performed in the playoffs.” He adds, “Isaiah wants to help people from his experience, which was important to him in making Go Forward.”

An SVFF 2025 spotlight on films to watch

For several years, Sun Valley Film Festival Program Director Ana Souza has taken time to highlight a few thought-provoking films that you might not have considered. This year’s selections showcase a wide range of highly diverse themes. These are filmmakers who tell their stories on their own terms, guiding us into worlds we don’t usually see, with careful access and precision.

“It’s exciting to cultivate a lively environment for independent film and filmmakers,” says Souza. “This year’s Sun Valley Film Festival showcases incredible works, and it’s a pleasure to share some films that truly connected with me.”

Each story is powerful in its own right and feels very auteur-driven— only these filmmakers could have connected with their subjects this way, which celebrates a core part of what the Sun Valley Film Festival is all about—marching to your own beat and sharing stories that resonate within you.

Hard Twist: Through the Lens of Barbara Van Cleve

This engaging observational portrait of renowned Western photographer Barbara Van Cleve offers insight into her personal and professional life, revealing how she forged her own path and pioneered her art in a maledominated field. Director Cynthia MattyHuber creates an intimate portrayal of this inspiring, self-reliant artist. The film highlights the iconic landscapes and subjects that have shaped her work.

“Barbara Van Cleve is a celebrated photographer in a male-dominated world,” tells Souza. “She’s such a firecracker of a figure, and Matty-Huber explores how her personal

life informed her work and her approach to photography. Barbara Van Cleve is an admirable figure, and Matty-Huber was able to establish that intimacy with her and highlight how transformative her own lens was for a woman in a contemporary American life setting, who is also queer. As a trailblazer in many ways, and at 90 years old, advocating for ranch women makes her a truly unique figure. Her photographs are incredibly beautiful. You can view the new American West through her lens.” Souza adds, “This is a great film for the Sun Valley audience!”

Directed by Charlie Pollinger, this phenomenal first feature premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. “Charlier Pollinger is a promising director,” says Souza. “It’s very impressive what he accomplished with his visual style. He takes you directly into the world of bullying and the dynamics among 13-year-old boys, illustrating the threatening danger in that. It starts so innocently and then escalates into something dangerous, capturing how blurry that line is at that age when you don’t fully understand the consequences of your actions.”

The Plague is a dark psychological thriller that examines the interactions within a teenage boy’s swim team when one of them falls ill, sparking a wave of bullying that becomes more and more dangerous. Pollinger is a talented filmmaker who knows how to create suspense and emotionally engage viewers. He effectively draws out memorable performances from his young cast and creates a tense world that keeps you holding your breath!

Natchez

Natchez is a new documentary from Suzzanah Herbet, who previously shared her project Break The Hold at the SVFF lab—it’s always exciting when an alum returns to the Festival.

“This is Suzannah Herbert’s second feature and it premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year,” says Souza. “She has worked on many films over the years, and she has been able to turn the lens inward on the world that she knows as a Southerner.”

Herbert’s new film thoughtfully and powerfully explores antebellum tourism in the Deep South through the perspectives of several memorable individuals. It encourages us to reexamine how we experience history and

feels more relevant than ever with its eye-opening look at the narratives we’ve been told.

“She examines recreational antebellum tourism, looking at different characters who are part of it,” explains Souza.

“It’s an examination of where we are, especially regarding racial dynamics, our history, and how we relate to it and how it’s represented now. It compares and contrasts, which is timely as it’s fascinating to connect to history in this way. She fearlessly tackles the idea of how we face our history, the way we discuss slavery, and how dangerous it can be to erase it. Natchez is seamless and thoughtful and a testament to the level of Herbert’s filmmaking.”

The Dating Game

Violet Du Feng directs with humor and lightness, especially in The Dating Game. This engaging documentary, which debuted at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, follows several shy young men in China as they navigate dating with the help of a professional coach. “Du Feng is a master at cinema verité, the observational documentary style of filmmaking,” says Souza. “She just blends in with her subjects. It’s an honest take, and very seamless how she approached her production.”

China’s One-Child policy has led to a significant disparity in the population between men and women, making dating even more challenging. Du Feng offers us a fresh perspective on this unique world, showing the relatable struggle of finding a partner through the eyes of three men simply seeking love. “She is a very thoughtful filmmaker in how she approached and constructed The Dating Game,” adds Souza. “The tone is light, with humor, but also includes many insightful moments as within the One-Child policy and other cultural policies that are in action, you can see the direct consequences of what is happening.” 

The discussion will explore AI’s role in democratizing production, boosting creativity, and navigating ethical challenges, giving filmmakers essential insights into cinema’s transformative future.

The discussion will feature Josh Wallace Kerrigan, also known as @Neural Viz, a filmmaker who has built a massive social media following by leveraging generative tools within traditional workflows to create immersive world-building narratives.

Originally from Wichita Falls, Texas, Kerrigan won the audience award at SXSW earlier this year with his horror-comedy short, Lurk, which is now being developed into a feature film. He created the digital brand Neural Viz, where he uses various generative tools to help produce videos that he writes, directs, performs in, and edits himself. These videos have generated tens of millions of views online, resulting in over a million followers across multiple channels.

Also participating in the AI discussion is Nick Confalone, an Emmy-nominated children’s TV showrunner, writer, and producer, as well as a founding partner at Asteria Film Co., a next-generation film and animation studio, where he currently oversees animation development. An animation industry veteran, Confalone is now spearheading artist-led generative films that are trained exclusively on ethically licensed libraries.

Together with their partner company Moon Valley, Asteria has created Marey, a commercial-safe video model trained entirely on licensed data—eschewing the scraping of artists’ work from the internet. Confalone’s focus is on pairing AI tools like Marey with a new business model in which lower production costs let filmmakers and artists retain ownership and share in the success of the projects they create.

Confalone’s TV credits include launching Disney’s SuperKitties, running the writer rooms on Hasbro’s My Little Pony: Equestria Girls and Apple TV’s Helpsters, and 15+ years of writing for Disney, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Netflix, Paramount, Sony, and PBS. Beyond television, Confalone has produced digital content for global brands including Amazon, AT&T, Disney, Gap Kids, and Unilever— at one point reaching over 250,000 followers on familyfriendly social channels. His feature screenplays, co-written with Neal Dusedau, have twice appeared on The Black List

SUN VALLEY FILM FESTIVAL EDUCATION AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS

The Sun Valley Film Festival (SVFF) engages students, emerging filmmakers, and the wider community through its Education and Outreach Programs. The Sun Valley Junior (SVJR) program empowers K–12 students with filmmaking competitions, workshops, and internships that offer mentorship and hands-on experience. SVJR provides opportunities for storytelling by helping students develop and showcase their cinematic skills. Through festival exposure, networking, mentorships, and skill-building workshops, SVJR encourages students to consider filmmaking as a future career and opens up potential opportunities in the industry.

Other programs include the 1 Potato Short Film Production Grant, which supports filmmaking in Idaho; the High Scribe Screenwriters Competition and Residency; and Shoptalks and Behind the Scenes panels, which connect audiences with filmmakers and industry leaders. Together, these initiatives strengthen SVFF’s mission to celebrate storytelling and foster creativity year-round.

SVJR FILM COMPETITION

The Sun Valley Junior (SVJR) Film Competition at the Sun Valley Film Festival promotes the discovery and support of young filmmakers by showcasing their work and fosters opportunities for participants to connect with peers and learn directly from Festival filmmakers.

Open to K–12 students, the competition invites original short films to be judged by a panel of Academy Award, Emmy, and Golden Globe winners and nominees. Finalists gain invaluable exposure to industry professionals and fellow student filmmakers, and the top film will be screened during the Festival before a feature at the world-class Argyros Performing Arts Center in Ketchum, Idaho.

“We are excited about the new December SVFF dates and cannot wait to see what the super-talented teen filmmakers submit for this year’s screening,” says SVJR Director John Nordstrom. “Last year we loved it that the best film was also a local Idaho filmmaker, Ashley Jae Uhrig, from Moscow, Idaho. She was able to network with the award-winning filmmakers, actors, and producers, including Demi Moore, Gia Coppola, and Pamela Anderson. We always want to promote young local filmmakers.”

All high school students are welcome to enter with an original short film. Entries are submitted through the official Festival submission portal, where students can upload their film files and provide basic information about themselves and their project. Once submitted, films will be reviewed by our team and passed along to a panel of acclaimed judges with experience from the Academy Awards, Emmys, and Golden Globes.

Submissions are open until October 25, and finalists will be announced on November 1. The winning film will screen at the Sun Valley Film Festival, December 3-7, 2025.

THE 1 POTATO SHORT FILM PRODUCTION GRANT

Supporting emerging filmmakers and incentivizing filmmaking in the state of Idaho, this year’s competition has expanded from narrative scripts to include documentary pitches. The script must be eight pages or less, and the finished film must be ten minutes or less. The judges include actors, writers, and filmmakers from all over the country. The top five projects will be announced in October, and the winning project will be announced at the Idaho Film Block during the 2025 SVFF.

The winning script or documentary pitch will be awarded $5,000 to support filming their project on location in Idaho. The winner will receive SVFF assistance from development through to the finished product. All narrative and documentary projects must be filmed in Idaho and be ready to premiere at the 2026 SVFF. As a partner on the film, SVFF will connect the winner with seasoned filmmaker participants and help build a presence for the film as it begins its festival journey.

The 2019 1 Potato winner, Scott Burkhardt, whose short film Girls Are Strong Here, went on to play at a dozen festivals and won the Grand Jury Prize at IFF Boston and the 2022 Humanitas Prize for Best Short Film. For 2025, Burkhardt’s short film We Buy Houses, about a house flipper who encounters something unexpected at one of his properties, which forces him to reconsider the role he plays in his community, will screen at the Festival. In addition, he also directed the short film Exuvia , which screened at SVFF 2024.

Elizabeth Giamatti, who directed When We Were Old , which screened at the 2024 Festival, returns to SVFF for 2025 with the prequel to that film, Wrecking Party. Wrecking Party follows friends Kate and Lily over the course of one night. Subtle shifts in their friendship come about as a result of their differing trajectories at a house party in Brooklyn.

NOVEMBER 7-8, 2025 SVJR Student Workshop

Presented by the Sun Valley Film Festival in partnership with Dark to Light Productions, the Sun Valley Film Festival (SVFF) is hosting the Sun Valley Junior (SVJR) Student Workshop. This immersive twoday program creates a real film set environment where students rotate through all major behind-the-camera roles and work directly with professional actors from the Liberty Theatre Company, guided by experienced filmmakers from SVFF and Dark to Light Productions.

The workshop is designed to give aspiring filmmakers authentic, hands-on experience. Over two days, students will rotate through directing, cinematography, lighting, sound, wardrobe, and props as well as production assistant roles. With professional equipment, expert instruction, and real actors on set, participants will learn the entire process of bringing a story to life in a simulated professional environment.

Alongside this professional training, students will also explore DIY filmmaking techniques, learning how to use simple, accessible tools in creative ways. By combining professional instruction with resourceful, low-budget approaches, the workshop shows that powerful stories can be told at any scale.

This two-day workshop immerses students in both professional and DIY filmmaking.

Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency nurtures new plays

Three new plays premiering on New York stages this fall—on Broadway, Off Broadway, and Off Off Broadway—share an unlikely origin: a new play development organization rooted in Idaho’s bucolic Wood River Valley. Founded to give playwrights time, space, and community to create bold new work, Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency (SVPR) is quickly emerging as a national force in the creation of new American theater.

The premieres include Obie Award winner David Cale’s Blue Cowboy, SVPR’s first commissioned play, which opens Off Off Broadway at The Bushwick Starr. The play is directed by Tony nominee Les Waters, who first collaborated with Cale during a 2022 workshop of the solo play in Ketchum. Pulitzer Prize winner Martyna Majok’s Queens, developed when she was SVPR’s 2022-2023 Resident Playwright, will be mounted Off Broadway by Manhattan Theatre Club, directed by Trip Cullman and featuring Anna Chlumsky of Veep fame and Tony nominee Marin Ireland. At The Booth Theatre, MacArthur “Genius” and Idaho native Samuel D. Hunter makes his Broadway debut with Little Bear Ridge Road, a play developed through SVPR’s NYCbased playwrights group. Directed by Tony winner Joe Mantello, the production stars Tony winner Laurie Metcalf and Tony nominee Micah Stock.

“Many opportunities for the development of new work have vanished in recent years,” says Hunter. “It was wonderful to create the first draft of Little Bear Ridge Road through SVPR’s NYC playwrights group, and as an Idaho native, being part of this bridge between Idaho and NYC was especially meaningful.”

For a relatively young nonprofit based in the Wood River Valley, this trifecta of productions is no small feat. Founded by NYC-based John Baker and Idaho-based Jonathan Kane, SVPR has grown into a vital creative engine by centering playwrights and prioritizing creative support. “We’re entering a new chapter, one that affirms the national reach and caliber of the work we develop,” says Baker. “We remain deeply committed to supporting artists creatively, expanding our statewide collaborations, and offering free, community-driven programming that begins locally and resonates nationally.”

SVPR’s signature residency program begins with a month-long stay in October for a playwright at the historic Ernest and Mary Hemingway House, which is owned and operated by The Community Library. SVPR then offers the playwright continued creative support on their new play for the year before they return to Idaho the subsequent fall for a workshop and public reading.

SVPR continues to nurture new work through residencies, readings, workshops, and public events across the Wood River Valley.

David Cale’s Blue Cowboy originated through this program. “This play could have come about from being inspired by this extraordinary part of the world,” says Cale. Similarly, Majok, who struggled with her play Queens for years, credits SVPR with giving her the space and support she needed to finish it. “When so many new play development centers shut down during the pandemic, playwrights lost not only space to create in safe, nurturing environments but also community and, for some of us, the motivation to write. I had been haunted by my play Queens for years.” She adds, “It became a life’s mission to finish Queens, and the Playwright’s Residency helped me reach that goal.”

While SVPR’s reach is growing nationally, its roots remain firmly planted in Idaho. Its programming continues to engage local students, artists, and audiences. Earlier this year, Pulitzer Prize finalist Rajiv Joseph premiered Horoscope at Fordham University in New York City—a play he began writing during his time at the Hemingway House. The play was a co-commission between SVPR and Fordham University and was first developed with theatre students at Boise State University.

This fall, SVPR continues to nurture new work through residencies, readings, workshops, and public events across the Wood River Valley. While SVPR’s reach is growing nationally, its roots remain firmly planted in Idaho.

“Hosting a playwright each fall in partnership with SVPR at the Hemingway House has been a pleasure. It’s so exciting to hear about the beginnings of a project, to follow how it takes shape over the course of the year, and then for the playwright to return to our valley to share their work. And to have these new plays taking root here, in our residency space, is thrilling,” says The Community Library Programs and Education Director Martha Williams.

Looking ahead, SVPR has named Tony Award winner and two-time Pulitzer finalist Stephen Karam as its 2025–2026 Resident Playwright. Best known for Sons of the Prophet and The Humans, Karam will write a new play with SVPR’s creative support. “At a time when opportunities for new play development are disappearing,” he says, “it feels vital to be part of SVPR’s mission to foster original work.”

That mission continues to grow in both scope and significance. And as new plays developed through SVPR take the national stage, they carry with them the imprint of Idaho’s landscapes, communities, and spirit of creative generosity. At a time when new play incubators are increasingly scarce, SVPR is proving that bold, inclusive, and deeply human storytelling can begin in our community— and resonate far beyond. 

From Canvas to Stage: Crafting a 2026 World Premiere

Jessica Lang’s ballets evoke worlds without walls—audiences are drawn into vast expanses where dance coexists with light, air, sky, water, and earth. Therefore, there is no better venue for Lang’s creativity than the Sun Valley Pavilion.

Lang, who is currently Resident Choreographer at Pacific Northwest Ballet (which has cocommissioned Lang’s new work with Ballet Sun Valley), is a prolific, highly-in-demand artist who has created over 100 dances for prestigious companies around the world, won numerous awards, and continues to find new ways to express our world—and our humanity—through movement. Lang’s inspiration for her thrilling new work—the landscape of Sun Valley—which served as her canvas for her latest creation.

In August, Lang spent a week in Ketchum at the Writer-in-Residence program at the Ernest and Mary Hemingway House, a private home/residency owned and managed by The Community Library. She called the solo retreat—no dancers, not even a studio—an “incubation time” in the very place where, during the 2026 Ballet Sun Valley Festival, her newly choreographed ballet will be performed by Pacific Northwest Ballet dancers.

“It was a unique experience to be submerged in the surroundings where the premiere will happen,” says Lang. “I had never been to Idaho. I was able to marinate in it, let it speak to me, and by the end of the week I had an idea of what I wanted my piece to look like.”

The experience of most dance-goers begins and ends in the theater, but any performance has much deeper roots than viewers may imagine. Lang says that when she creates dances, movement is usually the last piece she adds. Light, colors, and architecture inform her concepts well before steps come to mind. The daughter of a painter, she took up visual art herself as a way to “warm up” her mind, just like a dancer’s physical warmup. Her day often starts with painting— acrylic on paper, primarily using tools instead of brushes for a more physical, movement-like flow—generating ideas to take into the dance studio later on.

“I was craving something to prepare myself so I could go into creation mode without being stone-cold mentally,” she explains. “I wanted to hone my subconscious and my eye, try things and get confused in the process. It’s like choreography. I can feel the movement in my hands.” During Lang’s residency, Sun Valley became a “3D canvas” for her new ballet. “It was an opportunity to get quiet and paint in Sun Valley,” she says. “I just let the thread of my mind take me where it wanted to go.”

Pacific Northwest Ballet artistic director Peter Boal values not only Lang’s vision, but also her deep involvement in all creative aspects of a production, from lighting and costume design to artistic input from musicians and dancers—and, especially, her way of highlighting the dancers’ individuality. “She respects and responds to everyone in the room, draws from them, and enhances their strengths,” says Boal. “She has this beautiful way of empowering everyone in the room.”

Boal notes the Pacific Northwest Ballet dancers’ special connection with Lang, which, combined with the energies she absorbs while in residence in Sun Valley, will make for magical performance of her new ballet at the 2026 Ballet Sun Valley Festival. “I love that these dancers, like Jessica, really live in the moment. I think you’re going to get a great, heightened experience with this piece.” 

The Future in Motion: Ballet’s Rising Stars in Sun Valley

In what has become an autumn tradition, Sun Valley audiences will get a preview of the ballet world’s future stars in performances by a group of elite, internationally recruited dancers, on October 23 and 24. Ballet Sun Valley and the San Francisco Ballet School (SFB) program have built a unique and rich partnership since their first appearance in Sun Valley in 2019. As pre-professional dancers, these young adults (whose technique is already professionallevel) learn the ropes of company life in a rigorous schedule of classes, rehearsals, and performances. Touring to Sun Valley provides invaluable career experience in responsibility, adaptability, and the pride of working as a team—and gives the Sun Valley community a rare chance to witness incredible talent in bloom.

Along with an ambitious program of classical, neoclassical and contemporary repertoire, this year these exceptional dancers will perform the work of one of their own. Shadows, choreographed by 18-year-old trainee Kenzie Andrews (set to music by her musician father), reflects the concept of a constant, invisible presence enveloping us—an eeriness and sense of uncertainty pervade the choreography.

“I want viewers to be on the edge of their seats, to feel the sense of mystery in the air. What’s going to happen next?” Andrews says. Although the Australian native has been choreographing since childhood (“I was always playing around with movement, making up little solos for myself, even when I was really young,” she remembers.), her gift was spotted at an SFB School workshop where students were tasked with conceiving of and creating dances for their classmates.

“At only 16, she had made a ballet that was so beautiful we produced it for the stage,” SFB School Director Grace Holmes says. “She’s a natural. She knows how to use music with movement and how to bring out new things in her dancers.”

With remarkably assured maturity, Andrews describes how illuminating it’s been to watch her fellow artists breathe life into her choreographic ideas. “I’d give them material, and they’d evolve it into something I could never imagine,” Andrews says. “Their movement morphed with mine and just kept going. Every step I gave them, they made it ten times better.”

For Ballet Sun Valley, the commitment to nurturing and showcasing balletic excellence, season after season, is clear. JUST IMAGINE What The Event can do

If you can dream up an event, The Event will bring it to life, and most importantly, have fun doing it. At 80 years young, owner Penny Weiss is a 20-year veteran of event rental and planning and has no plans to retire. In an industry that requires fast-paced, high-stakes, and back-breaking work, she is still having a ball. With a solid team behind her, Penny continues to grow The Event to be bigger and better than ever, now with two large warehouses full of everything you can imagine to create a memorable experience for you and your guests.

Two decades ago, the Texas native got into the business in the Wood River Valley when word got out that she was good at centerpieces. Soon, she was chairing Higher Ground’s signature fundraiser, and planning even more area nonprofit events until her husband told her to start charging or stop. So, The Event was born. These days, Penny leans more on her business partners, Lisa Jatho and Ashlee Hamilton, but says she will keep at it forever. “Sometimes we are the event planner, other times the rental and setup company, or all three,” she says. “We all enjoy it, and we hope that rubs off on the client and doesn’t feel like a chore.”

Penny’s creativity knows no bounds in bringing a vision to reality. The smallest event they ever executed was for two people, featuring a special marriage proposal on boats at

Redfish Lake, complete with Spanish guitarists, music, candles, and champagne. Not that Penny didn’t try to grant the client’s wish for a Venetian flat gondola, but she reigned herself in due to exorbitant insurance and shipping costs from New York. Their largest event continues to be Higher Ground’s fundraiser, with 420 guests this year. Her idea for a real-life Christmas village down the center of Main Street one year to benefit the Senior Connection would have come to fruition, but for the concerns of city officials over the spread of COVID.

In The Event’s main warehouse, where imagination begins to stir, racks of linens and bins of event décor tower to the ceiling. The volume of event product is staggering, from elegant to eclectic. Penny and Lisa point out pipe and drape, tents, chandeliers, candles, vases, lighting, lanterns, service ware, glassware, bambooware, tubs, grills, propane ovens, farm tables, sign board easels, and even hand-painted Austrian bells. “My goal is to be one step above generic catering and rentals,” says Penny. “I’d rather it look like it was your event, your personality, because it’s your party. If

you ask for it and we don’t have it, then we’ll purchase it and have it in our inventory.”

Outdoor games? They have them, including a pool table. There are duck decoys, cars, and cowboy stuff, a western bar, fondue pots, and feathers galore, machines that make slushies, soft-serve ice cream, milkshakes, popcorn, and cotton candy— even a dunk tank and carnival strong-man game. The back of the warehouse houses their commercial laundry, iron, and dishwashing machines. All of it is done in-house.

“I’m getting old, but I love the work,” says Penny. “It really is fun to be around people who are celebrating. From concept to completion, we can help plan, put it together, and clean it up.” 

ANIMAL WELFARE AT MOUNTAIN HUMANE

It’s more than adoption

Saving animals and changing lives remains the mission at Mountain Humane. Every day, the staff members work hard to save another life or be a lifeline to a pet owner in need. The best part of working at the shelter is hearing a new success story, whether it’s an adoption, a happy tail story, or a life-saving medical intervention.

Mountain Humane is more than just an adoption center—it is the Valley’s Animal Welfare Organization. It provides adoption, behavior training, intake and surrender services, microchipping, pet care support, a pet food pantry, and a public veterinary clinic to assist those who care for or are looking for a pet. The story of shelter alumnus McFlurry highlights the dedication and daily efforts at Mountain Humane. McFlurry was one of 24 dogs the shelter

received on January 24 through a “Dog Is My Copilot” transfer from the shelters in the Los Angeles wildfire area. She is a twoyear-old, large black-and-white pitbull mix with lots of energy. She quickly became a favorite with the animal care team because she was such a love bug. The behavior team adored her because she was smart and eager to learn. However, McFlurry didn’t attract interest from potential adopters and was often passed over. Finally, in late July, she was placed in foster care for a shelter break. It turned out that she found her person, and her foster dad found his new best friend, becoming a forever family on July 31. These moments are what the staff wait for and celebrate!

“We are an animal welfare organization, aspiring to support pet owners in our community in whatever capacity they need,” says Mountain Humane Executive Director Christine Ferguson. “Sometimes it is just the gift of a crate, sometimes it is pet food, or behavior counseling. But most importantly, we want the community to know we are here for them.”

Butters, the cat, is another heartwarming story of medical care, behavior, and adoption success. He was surrendered by his owner to Mountain Humane on January 29. Soon after arriving, the shelter veterinarian diagnosed him with a serious eye infection that required the removal of his eye. After surgery, Butters completely shut down in the shelter environment. He missed his family and home. A member of the management staff took Butters home to recover with his three resident tuxedo kitties. Then, on May 15, Butters found his new loving forever family, including a one-eyed dog and a sweet teenage daughter who had also lost vision in one eye. What a perfect match, and what a celebration!

Every animal that arrives at Mountain Humane has its own special story, oftentimes a sad one. But, with the care, love, and guidance of the medical, animal care, behavior, and adoption teams, there are beautiful outcomes for these fur babies. The many different programs and services at Mountain Humane work together to provide the best care to our shelter residents and pet owners in the community needing a helping hand. 

New observatory in Stanley

Stargazing in Stanley just reached new heights, as if one couldn’t feel any closer to the pristine dark night sky over the Sawtooth and White Cloud peaks. Four years ago, when retired college professor, astronomer, and Idaho Dark Sky Association (IDSA) Board Member Tim Frazier spoke on CBS’s Sunday Morning program about the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve, someone watching that morning decided to contact the Reserve to donate a family telescope. The donation included an impressive 14-inch Celestron Edge HD telescope with a CGE Pro mount and camera, numerous eyepieces, and other accessories, offering exceptional optics that provide detailed views of stars, planets, and other deep-sky objects for visual observing and astrophotography.

“From the inception of the IDSA in 2021, we had anticipated the building of an observatory at some point as a logical extension of our public education and outreach programs, and this generous donation was the impetus,” says Frazier. Through a partnership with the City of Stanley, the IDSA Board was able to find a suitable central location for the observatory. Working with Stanley’s Mayor, Steve Botti, and the City Council, the IDSA received permission to build at Pioneer Park, which is near the airstrip and the Stanley School.

“The most difficult challenges in building an observatory are obtaining land and the instrument, and we had secured both of those,” says Frazier. The next daunting step was the structure itself, until Terry Wofford, a tiny home builder and member of the Magic Valley Astronomical Society, offered salvaged logs from a cabin in Hagerman—a perfect fit for Stanley’s building codes and aesthetic. Once the excavation and foundation work were completed, Wofford, with a crew of volunteers from the Dark Sky Alliance, began stacking logs for the 16’ x 20’ building, which has a pitched metal roof able to roll off the building and onto outriggers, so the main telescope is open to the sky.

The project is being funded primarily by private donations, with an initial major gift through IDSA Board Member and dark sky advocate, Dr. Stephen Pauley. The fundraising effort will support completion of the building and IDSA programs and operations at the observatory. The building will act as a base for astronomy groups and programs, and include outdoor interpretive signage. Education and outreach will include Astronomer-in-Residence, speaker series, community events, school programs, programs on lighting principles and ordinances, citizen science opportunities, and more. The IDSA is also working with Boise State University and Physics Professor Dr. Brian Jackson to potentially host some of their First Friday programs on astronomy or physics.

Traditionally, all observatories have an event called “first light,” a celebration of the successful completion and operational debut of a new observatory, and Frazier says they are planning for that event next spring. 

ELEVATING EMERGENCY CARE

Air St. Luke’s expansion brings life-saving speed to the Wood River Valley

Last April, in the high alpine wilderness near Hyndman Peak, a skier’s fractured leg could have spelled hours of peril and uncertainty. Instead, it became a powerful demonstration of what’s possible when expert training, community collaboration, and advanced air medical technology converge. The rescue mission—executed by Air St. Luke’s—was not only a triumph of teamwork but also a preview of the life-saving potential that would soon become a permanent fixture in the Wood River Valley.

On August 9, St. Luke’s Health System officially expanded its emergency medical transport program, Air St. Luke’s, by stationing a helicopter and specialty medical team at St. Luke’s Wood River Medical Center. This strategic move significantly enhances the region’s ability to respond to time-sensitive emergencies, especially in remote and mountainous terrain where minutes can mean the difference between life and death.

The April rescue near Hyndman Peak underscored the need for such a resource. The call came in just as the Air St. Luke’s crew was clearing a previous mission in Boise. With urgency and precision, pilot Tim Allen and medical crew Kenna, Sam, and Bill refueled and headed north. Their mission: locate and extract an injured skier stranded at nearly 11,000 feet in steep, snowy terrain.

Communication was key. The Air St. Luke’s team coordinated seamlessly with Blaine County, Ketchum Fire and Rescue, skiers on the scene, and the emergency department at St. Luke’s Wood River. “The success of this mission came down to communication,” says Kenna. “From our Comm Center to the ski rescue team, everyone was on the same page.”

After identifying a safe landing zone below the injured skier, Sam and Bill hiked uphill with medical gear while Kenna and Tim returned to pick up the ski rescue team. Thanks to prior joint avalanche and helicopter safety training, the team was well-prepared to load into the aircraft while it remained running—a maneuver requiring precision and trust. The patient was stabilized and flown to Wood River Hospital, where he was diagnosed with a leg fracture, thankfully without circulatory compromise.

This mission was more than a rescue—it was a demonstration of readiness, adaptability, and the critical role of air medical services in rural Idaho. And it came just months before Air St. Luke’s would make its expanded presence in the valley official.

“Bringing this air ambulance resource directly to our local community enhances our ability to respond to emergencies like heart attacks, strokes, and trauma,” says Almita Nunnelee, chief nursing officer and chief operating officer at St. Luke’s Wood River. “This critical addition strengthens our commitment to providing rapid, high-quality care when every second counts.”

Since the expansion, Air St. Luke’s has already responded to multiple scene calls, including injured hikers and a heart attack patient in Carey. That particular flight took just 12 minutes— compared to an hour or more by ground transport. In cases like STEMI heart attacks, where national guidelines extend the standard of care to 120 minutes in rural areas, rapid air transport can be the deciding factor in survival and recovery.

“There have been so many success stories and remarkable recoveries,” says Blaine Patterson, EMS Director for Air St. Luke’s. “Rapid identification, rapid activation, rapid response, and rapid transport to the interventional unit have been instrumental in the outcomes for many of those patients.”

The backbone of these operations is the Bell 429 helicopter—a dual-engine aircraft chosen specifically for its high-altitude capabilities, speed, and safety. Designed for performance in rugged terrain, the Bell 429 can land in tight, remote locations and operate efficiently at elevations like those found near Hyndman Peak. It’s equipped with advanced lifesaving technology, including ventilators, cardiac monitors, and infusion pumps, allowing the crew to deliver ICU-level care en route.

“Our crews train constantly, but they also adapt in real time,” says Jeffrey Safley, RN, rotor wing supervisor. “You can’t rehearse every scenario, but our team’s ability to think critically, act safely, and provide highly skilled and rapid care is second to none.”

Victor Quon, RN, EMS manager, e emphasizes the team’s deep community ties. “All our crew members are involved in the community in some way. These aren’t just professionals—they’re volunteers, educators, and neighbors. Their commitment goes beyond the job.”

The Air St. Luke’s membership program plays a vital role in sustaining these services. At $65 per year, membership offers financial peace of mind by waiving any portion of the transport bill not covered by insurance. More importantly, membership fees help fund training for local EMS partners and ensure that highquality care is accessible when it matters most.

“Most of our membership dollars go right back into the community—into training, equipment, and readiness,” says Patterson.

The expansion also reflects a broader regional strategy. Air St. Luke’s operates as a mobile critical care unit, with bases in Boise and Twin Falls, serving southern Idaho, eastern Oregon, and northern Nevada. Through partnerships with the Association of Air Medical Membership Programs (AAMMP), coverage extends across the Pacific Northwest and into northern California, with reciprocity through Life Flight Network.

Blaine County Sheriff Morgan Ballis summed it up best: “The addition of Air St. Luke’s to our valley will enhance response times and improve patient outcomes. This new resource reflects our continued partnership and shared commitment to delivering timely, life-saving care.”

CULTIVATING FOOD CONSCIOUSNESS

Mountain town folk call the months between bike and ski season “mud season” or “slack,” words that indicate spoiling and laziness. To me, it’s a season of sustenance and earthiness, with space to focus on vitality and perseverance. Time, so precious with limited daylight hours, beckons us inside to linger longer, settle. The natural shift toward slowing down, bundling up, and tuning in is ideal for deep nourishment of self and loved ones, allowing us to be more intentional about what we say “Yes” to and why.

I say, “Yes!” to being more present in the kitchen while integrating and transforming our abundant harvest. With lots of food to dehydrate, preserve, conserve, and savor, I tie my apron, open recipe books, and approach each food project with gratitude for fall’s bounty as we prepare for the upcoming dormant months.

Yes, these efforts will care for my mind-body during flu and holiday season. To fend off stagnation and excess of unnatural lights, sugar, caffeine, and alcohol, I consciously prepare and consume foods to foster well being . They will also nourish friends at potlucks, other single moms, and my children at home.

While assessing seasonal ingredients as I organize baskets, boxes, and bins, I envision stretching beyond typical family meals to create a zucchini tarte, squash soup, and oats baked in apples. To uphold traditions, I’ll make a batch of Gramma Truppi’s homemade sauce with my sissy’s elk sausage, berry compote, and plum butter to adorn weekend breakfasts; apple pie filling to freeze for holiday desserts.

Of course, I say, “Yes, please!” to support in the kitchen—meal preparation is more pleasurable with co-creation. Sometimes my kids bless me with their presence in preparing hearty greens and pesto for Friday night pizza or buckeyes for the cookie party I co-host annually. Often, I’m solo, cranking out well-balanced weekday dinners and multitasking on tomorrow’s breakfast and school lunches. Every effort is well considered.

I peer into my stocked pantry, bountiful baskets, rows of jars, and capacious drawers. I revel in options thanks to local growers: onions from King’s Crown; tomatoes from Squash Blossom; elephant garlic from Drinkers of the Wind; experimental eggplants and plenty of peppers from my sister’s garden. Ingredients for an Italian casserole or ratatouille? I could sauté chard, collard greens, or kale as a side dish.

Then, I personalize the recipe around dietary needs and preferences. I say, “Yes, of course!” to accommodating nightshade or dairy sensitivities, celiac disease, impaired digestion, and other nutritional challenges. When cooking for small gatherings of omnivores, I may choose meat, poultry, or fish from my freezer: whole chickens from Agrarian Harvest; ground lamb from Lava Lake; trout from Koehn Trout Farm; pork from King’s Crown; duck breast from a former client; elk

from my sister. For big groups and vegetarians, I choose from my collection of organic beans—delicious, hearty, and underrated for their nutrient density, grown locally and friendly on my pocketbook. I tailor my weekly sourdough recipe, always using Hillside Grain flours, with ingredients to complement the meal. Rosemary and garlic? Golden raisins and cardamom?

To make delicious food, we do not need to be classically trained chefs, possess expensive kitchen appliances, or drizzle fancyinfused olive oils. A nourishing meal can be created with seasonal foods grown in harmony with Mother Earth by farmers who use growing practices we trust. These foods burst with flavor— helping even novice cooks feel empowered in the kitchen—and remind us to prioritize foods our bodies are designed to consume.

Using the idea of mending— both metaphorical and literal— to consider multiple questions. What is it to live in two cultures or between two cultures postmigration? How can migration be both a moment of rupture and one of healing? What is the possibility of repairing landscapes and environments harmed by human activity?

Artist Maria de Los Angeles, Assistant Director of Painting and Printmaking at Yale School of Art, visited the Wood River Valley in August 2024 and led public workshops as part of the creation of new work for the exhibition, which includes paintings, prints, and a wearable sculpture—a dress that celebrates biculturalism while recognizing the challenges it presents. Co-curated by Courtney Gilbert and Erin Joyce.

Bex Wilkinson’s art in Idaho

Hailey resident, artist, and philanthropist Bex Wilkinson’s dedication to showcasing her work both nationwide and internationally for over five years has now earned her a solo exhibition in her home state of Idaho.

Wilkinson’s debut in Boise at The Common Well, located in Boise’s Garden City area, was made possible by the space’s founders, Katherine Shaughnessy and Amber Lawless.

“They have created a safe space for creative minds to collaborate, and it’s very progressive and cutting-edge,” says Wilkinson. “They are not there to be a commercial gallery. Their mission is to promote the arts and take risks.”

Wilkinson’s show, All God’s Creatures, is on display in the Upstairs Gallery through November 28, featuring six paintings that highlight the dignity of non-human beings, such as those with wings, fins, and four legs.

“It reflects the deep interconnectedness of all life,” says Wilkinson. “The inspiration for this series came from moments of loss, especially witnessing the death of a beloved dog and standing beside a friend in their grief.” She adds, “In that moment, there was an awareness of the dignity in leaving this earth with pure innocence. All God’s Creatures offers space for reflection on the nature of our impermanence, reminding us that beauty and fragility are intertwined, and that every creature’s life leaves its own unique imprint.”

These works examine the ongoing struggle between good and evil, beauty and loss, power and choice. Each piece reminds us that our decisions have ripple effects, impacting not only our lives but also those of other creatures and delicate

ecosystems we share on the planet. Through these works, Wilkinson encourages reflection and urges us to see the world more completely—to appreciate its imperfections along with its wonders—and to remember that the future depends on the choices we make today. 

Caleb Meyer was born in Hailey, Idaho. As a child, he enjoyed all types of art, but it was not until he took a college painting class that he discovered his passion for oil painting. After graduating from Boise State University in 2006, Meyer started an apprenticeship with nationally recognized oil painter Robert Moore. Meyer likens his time in Moore’s studio to laying a solid foundation. He is now an accomplished artist, with works in prominent public and private collections. The gallery will also feature a selection of new pieces from our other gallery artists.

Gilman Contemporary welcomes German photographer Jan Schlegel. Schlegel’s black-and-white images capture the profound beauty and delicate fragility of life. Known for captivating portraits and still-lifes, Schlegel’s work reveals the bare essence of his subjects. Whether it is a portrait of a person, jellyfish, or tulip, each image is filled with a tender and quiet intimacy.

Schlegel uses traditional photographic printing methods to create images that withstand the test of time. Each handtoned and printed platinum print is a meditation in stillness, craft, and artistic vision. The series Of Aliens, Mermaids, and Medusas features portraits of backlit jellyfish undulating against rich and inky black. These ethereal images offer brief moments of fantasy, inviting a sense of wonder at the natural

world. Through Schlegel’s lens, the world is infused with magic, inviting us to see not only what we expect, but also what we dare to envision.

At the heart of Schlegel’s work is a call to reawaken the imagination. In an era defined by such crises as climate change, pollution, pandemic, and war, our senses are dulled, and our creative instincts are overwhelmed by anxiety and noise. Schlegel believes that imagination is not a luxury but a lifeline, one that asks us to slow down, turn inward, and reconnect with the world around us. This kind of imagination is not an escape from reality, but a deeper engagement with it, where creativity becomes a path to new perspectives and meaningful change. Each image is not only a visual meditation but also a tactile experience, with every print carefully developed by Schlegel to ensure its quiet, enduring impact.

Maggie Taylor

Gilman Contemporary is delighted to announce representation of photographic artist Maggie Taylor. An early adopter of technology as an artistic tool, Taylor’s layered visual narratives blend the aesthetics of 19th-century hand-colored photography with elements of fantasy and the subconscious. These compositions are visually arresting and psychologically resonant. Evoking the surrealism of Magritte and Dali, the work is distinctly her own—intuitive, mysterious, and deeply imaginative. Her images, filled with seashells, random objects, antique toys, and anonymous figures, encourage viewers to bring their own perspectives and interpretations to the work, recognizing that

meaning is shaped as much by individual experience as by the artist’s intent.

“There is no one meaning for any of the images,” she notes, “rather, they exist as a kind of visual riddle... meant to be both playful and provocative.” Inspired by childhood memories, science fiction, and a curiosity about human nature, Taylor creates spaces that feel both intimate and otherworldly, inviting the viewer to linger, reflect, and dream.

Dana Hart-Stone

Dana Hart-Stone’s digital paintings are rooted in a deep engagement with the historical and cultural fabric of the American West. His early experiences exploring abandoned homesteads in eastern Montana fostered a fascination with the fragmented narratives of settler life and the broader, often obscured, histories of the American frontier. These solitary encounters, wandering through collapsed roofs, overturned stoves, and dust-covered remnants of domestic life, left a lasting impression. They offered glimpses into lives interrupted, incomplete stories suspended in place. Today, those formative discoveries continue to inform his work, expressed through meticulously composed digital paintings constructed from vintage vernacular photographs.

Hart-Stone’s large-scale compositions serve as visual archives dense with symbolic and documentary resonance. Seen from afar, his works read as woven tapestries or Native American star quilts, unified by rhythm, texture, and repetition. Yet as viewers draw closer, intimate narratives begin to unfold with striking clarity: a man proudly displaying his catch of the day, a child perched beside a rooster, a woman grinning behind the wheel of a vintage car. HartStone is particularly attuned to recurring visual codes, such as how Americans pose in a rowboat, straddle a horse, or stand beside a car. These seemingly ordinary moments accumulate into something more, a collective portrait of American life reframed through the lens of memory, context, and perspective. By recontextualizing vernacular imagery, Hart-Stone investigates the deeper structures of cultural memory, how personal and national narratives are formed, preserved, reinterpreted, and forgotten.

The Spirit of the West

This show brings together a dynamic group of gallery artists, offering a wide-ranging exploration of the American West—from historical depictions to bold contemporary interpretations.

The exhibition features vintage photographs from Edward Curtis’ monumental 30-year project, The North American Indian (1898–1928), along with Andy Warhol’s western pop masterpieces from his Cowboys and Indians series (1986).

Also on view are David Yarrow’s striking large-scale photographs, which blend cinematic backdrops, recognizable models, eccentric western characters, and trained animals to create images that evoke curiosity, laughter, and awe.

The show further highlights recent acquisitions of paintings by Russell Chatham. While Chatham’s landscapes may appear as recognizable places, they transcend topography— capturing a feeling, an emotion that resonates deeper than the visual mind.

Across painting, textile, neon, and print, Parrhesia gathers ten artists spanning generations who transform language into image, allowing letters and phrases to take on material weight. Text is not simply read but painted, printed, illuminated, and stitched into form. The poetic edges of language brush against its political charge, tracing a lyrical lineage in which words become images. Each work contributes a distinct cadence to the conversation, transforming speech into vital acts of expression.

In classical philosophy, “parrhesia” refers to the act of speaking candidly and boldly—telling the truth without concealment, even when it carries risk. Language in this exhibition manifests as both intimate reflection and public statement, revealing the tension and beauty in the act of reading and looking. The works invite viewers into a space where poetry and concept, lyricism and critique, coexist in vibrant dialogue. Carrying rhythm and charge, Parrhesia illuminates the ongoing possibilities of text with a celebration of language as living, tactile, and evocative.

Kristina Foley’s large-scale felted works invite viewers into lush, tactile landscapes that shift between the familiar and the fantastical. Foley’s carefully chosen materials engage the senses and highlight the origins and slow processes that shape each piece.

She combines wool from a flock of endangered Navajo-Churro sheep near her Western Oregon home with fine Merino from Shaniko Wool Company, an Oregon-based leader in regenerative agriculture and fully traceable domestic wool production.

Recent Work

Juhlin’s mixed-media work is about discovery and the hint of possibility. Using cold wax, oil, acrylic, ink, and paper, Juhlin works by adding layer after layer of material, images, and color to create his compositions. He then returns to explore, excavate, expose, and obscure each piece. Though his works can be loosely described as abstract landscapes, the end result is a non-literal visual form—a translation of the creative process of adding and taking away.

“Often we see only the surface of things when in reality there are many layers, artifacts, histories, clues that hint of

something curious and magical that might lay beneath the surface waiting to be discovered, excavated, explored, and experienced,” says Juhlin. “My work seeks to reflect a sense of stillness, space, and the visual history of time evident in the western landscape. The work alludes to the raw typography and vast space where I live and work. In this environment, time often reveals itself in the form of rock strata created by erosion, wind, and water, both building up over eons of time and wearing away by the elements in a continuous process. Both process and materiality are always important components in my work.”

Artist Charlotte Hemmings’ mixed-media works probe the mythology of the American West, where the spectacle of the rodeo is both subject and metaphor. Hyper-iconic imagery drawn from cowboy and rodeo traditions is transferred onto canvas, then deliberately dismantled through paint—gestural marks, drips, and swaths of raw pigment pulling clarity into collapse. Horses charge into chromatic noise, flags dissolve into paint’s physicality, and dust becomes pure pigment. What begins as an iconic spectacle shifts into a fractured, shimmering residue of memory and myth.

This process opens a dialogue about how cultural narratives are constructed, romanticized, and revised. For the artist, that conversation is personal. “As an Idaho native now distanced from fully rural rhythms, I stand in a liminal space—close enough to feel the pull of heritage, yet distant enough to see its contradictions. The rodeo—already a performance of myth—becomes even more performative, refracted through technological and painterly lenses. What remains is neither fixed history nor pure invention, but something in between: a luminous vision of the West suspended between belonging and estrangement, heritage and reinvention,” says Hemmings.

Both series showcase her signature mix of nostalgia, resilience, and editorial style—portraits, landscapes, and moments that embody the grit, humor, and soul of Western culture.

Gretchen’s restaurant is named after Olympian and Sun Valley native, Gretchen Fraser. She was the first American to ever win an Olympic gold medal for skiing in the 1948 Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland.
