LOVE STORY

February in Sun Valley is always an interesting month, often a free-for-all of outdoor winter sports. Even though we have a below-normal snowpack for this time of year, we can still enjoy the environs and routines many mountaintown dwellers love in the winter, especially with some Northern Lights in the evening and plenty of sunny days. You just suit up for the cold and wind and go.

I often wonder whether the cold makes people so tough that they might become a little heartless. Lately, I have noticed that conversations have become a little prickly, and the world in general is suffering, which is setting a bad mood. For those reasons, we decided at SVPN to embrace February and help folks enjoy some heartfelt events and stories.

In this month’s edition, we present a peek at Ballet Sun Valley’s Summer Festival with the Pacific Northwest Ballet as a save-the-date event. If you read the cover story, you’ll find a fascinating background on what’s to come at the end of June, and who doesn’t love our ballet!

Perhaps the most exciting news is the return of the Audi FIS Ski World Cup Finals, March 20-25, 2027. We have the scoop and are also excited about Sun Valley Olympians in Cortina, Italy. Let’s show our love for our hometown athletes, who inspire us no matter our age. In addition, we put together an article on Sun Valley at 90, honoring this milestone and celebrating

America’s first ski resort. We also feature the new Magic Carpet at Rotarun, where some of Sun Valley’s top alpine athletes first discovered their love for skiing and snowboarding.

Our Flash pages light up with Sun Valley Film Festival stars and filmmakers from December, featuring our own movie stars, Ali Larter and Demi Moore, working together on the television series Landman, and information on how a membership can provide access to such excellent events. Who doesn’t love that?

And we’ve got all the info on all the local Feburary events, putting them all in one place to enjoy President’s Day Weekend and, of course, Valentine’s Day—there’s plenty to do. We highlight the month’s Gallery Walk, and SVPN’ s Now Showing section will inspire you to peruse and explore all the exhibitions around town, helping you find the art you love.

In our Wellness section, read about skin care from St. Luke’s, peptides from Monarch, and biohacking from CENTERED—very cutting-edge. In addition, this edition features Style Dial interior designers who showcase rooms throughout the house that create the perfect Sun Valley home.

But the most fun is happening in Stanley at Winterfest. Let the images speak for themselves about an event that’s like no other and that many people treasure each year. Also, in the Sun Valley Restaurant Association Dining Guide, enjoy the many choices for a meal out or to go, and for a night out to say I love you to your favorite someone, your friends, and your family. And SVPN Magazine has some eye-catching real estate listings in this issue, so you can find the home you love.

Remember, this is our life now, so let’s look after one another and find the love in us all.

Wood River Extreme Ski Joring (WRESJA) Annual Ski Joring

Fast horses tow brave skiers and snowboarders down a 600–900-foot snow-packed course, where competitors tackle one to three jumps and reach speeds up to 40 miles per hour, all while spearing salad-plate-sized rings with a “free” arm. A clean run means hitting the jumps, grabbing rings from both rider and skier, and crossing the finish line in one piece—missed rings and skipped jumps cost precious points, and winners are crowned by their combined times over both days. This year’s races also include a couples division, a century division where the rider and skier’s ages add up to 100 or more. A portion of ticket sales goes directly back into local youth and winter programs and area nonprofits. Bring your lawn chairs, dress wild and warm, but leave the dogs at home so everyone can enjoy the races safely and comfortably. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

BALLET SUN VALLEY FESTIVAL 2026

A summer tradition, reimagined

Pacific Northwest Ballet (PNB) Artistic Director

Peter Boal lights up when asked about the repertory his company will bring to Ballet Sun Valley’s 2026 Summer Festival. “PNB is thrilled to perform in Sun Valley. We have long admired the community’s dedication to dance, and the support Ballet Sun Valley offers to companies around the world. We will proudly present a cadre of works selected specifically for the Pavilion stage. These ballets brilliantly showcase our repertoire and our dancers,” Boal says.

By presenting two distinct programs, PNB will offer audiences a rare opportunity to experience the full breadth of the company’s versatility and depth of talent, essentially, a season’s worth of ballet in just two days.

When curating a program, Boal considers each ballet’s emotional impact, striving to take audiences on a journey of observation, delight, and reflection. “We’re including works like Dani Rowe’s The Window, which is more psychological, and Ulysses Dove’s Red Angels, which has become a PNB signature,” he explains. As one of the artists who originated the role at New York City Ballet, Boal brings a personal connection to the work.

“We’re including works like Dani Rowe’s The Window, which is more psychological, and Ulysses Dove’s Red Angels, which has become a PNB signature.”

“I loved every second of my residency. Every day was spent being creative.”

PNB and Boal’s historic connection to George Balanchine will also be honored with a performance of Rubies from Jewels, the iconic ballet that showcases the dancers’ razor-sharp technique, dynamic energy, and infectious joy.

In June, Sun Valley audiences will also be the first to see a world premiere co-commissioned by Ballet Sun Valley (BSV) and PNB, and choreographed by the world-renowned Jessica Lang. The multi-talented Lang is not only a choreographer but also a painter known for incorporating visual art and architectural elements into her work. Lang’s new ballet grew directly out of her residency at the Ernest and Mary Hemingway House in Ketchum, where she was given the time and space to let ideas take root.

“I loved every second of my residency,” Lang says. “Every day was spent being creative. Watching the sunrise, meditating, listening to music, and reading—but overall, I was very focused on painting. That’s how I connect with my creative intuition and prepare for choreography.” During her time in Ketchum, she painted both small- and large-scale works, mostly outdoors. “After a week of that schedule, I was bubbling with creativity, which was exactly the point.”

Though the ballet is still in the conceptual phase, Lang’s new work will draw literary inspiration from her time at the Hemingway House. “The concepts are about aged books, short stories, and the library,” she says. “My visions for the piece are beautiful and poetic.”

Left: Lucien Postlewaite in Jessica Lang’s Ghost Variations
Below: Lucien Postlewaite, Christopher D’Ariano, and Dylan Wald in Jessica Lang’s Ghost Variations

As PNB’s Resident Choreographer, Lang has created other ballets specifically for the company. Her longstanding relationship with the dancers allows the creative process to unfold with trust and openness.

“I think the dancers feel challenged and respected,” says Boal.

“There’s a sense of reassurance and familiarity. Jessica stretches their abilities, and they look forward to that every time.” That comfort level fosters collaboration. “She’s a true conceptualist,” Boal adds. “She shows the material and then steps back. The dialogue quickly moves beyond Jessica and becomes the dancers’ dialogue.”

In addition to the world premiere, two other Lang works will be performed: The Calling, accompanied by live vocal orchestration, and ZigZag, set to the music of Tony Bennett, both featuring, as Boal notes, “soul-stirring, poignant music that unfailingly touches audiences’ hearts.”

Above: Dylan Wald in Jessica Lang’s The Calling Left: Leah Terada and Christopher D’Ariano in Dani Rowe’s The Window

The new co-commission marks another chapter in the ongoing collaboration between Pacific Northwest Ballet and Ballet Sun Valley. In 2020, BSV featured PNB in a digital festival during the COVID-19 pandemic. In subsequent years, artists of the company have participated in BSV performances and education programs, a tradition that continues this summer. When reflecting on what it means to BSV to present PNB in their Sun Valley debut, Ballet Sun Valley Executive Director Kelli Quinlan shares, “Welcoming Pacific Northwest Ballet to the Pavilion stage is an exciting moment we’ve long anticipated, and we very much look forward to sharing two unforgettable performances with this outstanding company.”

Alongside the performances, Ballet Sun Valley will offer a two-day education workshop. PNB artists will teach classes on the Sun Valley Pavilion stage, giving students the extraordinary opportunity to train in the same space as the professional dancers. “It’s a ‘light bulb’ moment,” says Footlight Dance Centre Director Mackenzie King. “Students see the dedication, perseverance, and hard work behind the art—and the possibilities of what the human body and mind can achieve.”

Additional workshop offerings include classes in strength and stretch, contemporary dance, and lunchtime Q&A sessions, all taught by world-class faculty. The program, attended primarily by local Footlight Dance Centre students, is offered free of charge with the goal of being accessible and inspirational. In a full-circle

moment, each day concludes with students attending the PNB performances in the Sun Valley Pavilion. The impact of this kind of engagement is profound, and Footlight Dance Centre founder Hilarie Neely has seen it first-hand. “It’s a rare opportunity to take class with the best in the world,” she says. “Our students leave immensely inspired. Their eyes are opened to what’s possible.”

As Ballet Sun Valley looks ahead to kicking off the summer season, the anticipation is palpable. “There is nothing like the feeling of experiencing live dance,” adds Dick Davis, Chair of Ballet Sun Valley. “PNB’s artistry, range, and commitment to new work, highlighted by a world premiere from Jessica Lang, make this Festival especially meaningful.” 

The anchor event of BSV’s season—the Summer Festival. The Donors’ Dinner with the Dancers, a special evening to celebrate the magic of dance, kicks things off on June 26. The Summer Festival continues with two captivating performances on June 27 and 28, when 38 dancers from Pacific Northwest Ballet take the stage at the breathtaking Sun Valley Pavilion. Mark your calendars to join the festivities and experience two unforgettable nights of artistry, energy, and pure joy under the stars!

MAGIC IN THOSE HAILEY HILLS

Rotarun’s new moving carpet lift

The bright side to this past December’s unseasonably warm weather patterns was a perfect window for the installation of Rotarun Ski Area’s brand-new 60-meter, state-of-the-art

Sunkid Moving Carpet lift, rounding out a winter sport’s ecosystem at the affectionately known “Little Mountain with the Big Heart.” And like its symbolic, mystical counterpart, the ‘magic carpet’ lift provides adventure, imagination, and freedom to generations of beginner skiers and boarders carving out their story on a storied little mountain, anchored by a community that continues to champion its survival.

PHOTO

“The installation has been part of our strategic vision for the space—a family-focused, kid-centric outdoor community center. We are incredibly excited for what this means for our families, our children, and the future of winter sport in the Wood River Valley.”

“The weather allowed us to execute every single element of this world-class installation,” says Scott McGrew, Executive Director of Rotarun Ski Area. “These magic carpets are fantastic tools for getting little kids, as well as adults new to the sport, on the mountain.” He adds, “The installation has been part of our strategic vision for the space—a family-focused, kidcentric outdoor community center. We are incredibly excited for what this means for our families, our children, and the future of winter sport in the Wood River Valley.”

The 60-meter lift was constructed in Austria by Sunkid over the course of three months, sent to Los Angeles by boat, transported to Salt Lake City via train, and finally trucked to Hailey in sections. “We shaped the slope to install the lift straight up from the lodge so that families can hang out in the lodge while their kids take laps,” explains McGrew. “The slope is perfect for learning. We also added an exit platform at the top for kids to collect themselves and get centered before takeoff.”

With many families whose parents don’t know how to ski, the mountain was missing that first-step piece, as the rope tow had a barrier to entry due to required strength and agility. The moving carpet can run at different speeds, but normal operations will transport users upward at a rate of roughly three feet per second. The Magic Carpet will be free to use during public hours and integrated into the RotaRippers learn-to-ski program, which provides local children with safe, supportive, and affordable access to snow sports. Riding the platter lift will continue to require Rotarun’s famously affordable lift tickets and family passes, keeping the hill accessible for all.

The project represents the culmination of a true communitywide effort, made possible through the leadership and energy of Deida and Duane Runswick, Cynthia Carroll and Woody Marshall, the SPUR Community Foundation’s Community Grant Program, Rixon Excavation, Merrick Construction, and Conrad Brothers Construction.

Rotarun first sprung up in the winter of 1940-41 when several farmers and ski pioneers rigged a pulley system with a tractor to operate a rope tow. It’s been both forgotten and seen years of popularity, yet continues to rise to relevance through the decades, reflecting impressive community involvement by generations of skiers and boarders. “It’s been carried by the community that stewards it,” says McGrew. “That’s its vibe; everybody is responsible for this place. It’s not one person, it’s not one entity, and it’s certainly not by a bottom line.”

The mom-and-pop ski resort industry has declined in the last 40 years by almost half due to the financial pressures of rising insurance, costly snowmaking, environmental regulations, and threatening affordable entry points. Says McGrew, “We had to invent an entirely new business approach, incorporating intentional programming during the day and targeting our user groups during those time slots so that we are not hemorrhaging operating costs.”

McGrew says Rotarun has a legendary status of perfection and mystique because it’s not being overwhelmed by bigger lodges, faster lifts, higher costs, and more control. “It’s such a throwback—the slope, the snowmaking we put in, the lessis-more-mentality—it all goes completely against the grain in the industry,” he says. “Rotarun fits into the narrative of the nostalgia surrounding Sun Valley. People love that, and recognize its importance.” 

SUN VALLEY REPRESENTS IN MILANO CORTINA 2026

The Olympic Winter Games will take place in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, from February 6 to 22, 2026. Four Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation athletes will be part of Team USA, which also includes five-time Olympian Hilary Knight, who has won one gold and three silver medals with the U.S. Olympic Women’s Ice Hockey Team.

RYDER SARCHETT

For nearly 60 years, the Sarchett family has been committed to ski racing. Bob and Lori, high school sweethearts, migrated from Seattle in 1969 and have been avid Masters racers ever since. Their sons, Jeff and Robin, were standout junior racers and achieved top national results. Jeff met Dottie Hand at a Sun Valley Town Series ski race, and, according to Robin, she was quickly “indoctrinated” into the family. Now, Jeff and Dottie’s son, Ryder, is competing in the Olympics.

Adele and Pat Savaria, who coached Ryder at the U12 and FIS levels, agree that his passion for skiing and commitment to training is exceptional. He spent more time gate training and free skiing than other kids, studied the sport, and kept tabs on his rivals.

A big win came in 2024 with gold in the Giant Slalom at the Junior World Championships.

In December 2025 at Beaver Creek, Sarchett landed a solid 25th A week later in Val-d’Isère, France, he notched a 10 th -place finish from starting position #52—only .77 behind the winner.

Ryder can rise to the occasion for big events, and that Sarchett competitive spirit runs deep. He’s a contender for the top-ten in Giant Slalom at the Games.

CHASE JOSEY

Chase Josey is up to his tricks again. The Hailey snowboarder is an elder of the tribe in halfpipe but hasn’t scored a podium since 2019. But, in Laax, Switzerland, on January 17, he took fourth place and found a path to his third Olympics.

Chase was 6 th in the 2018 Pyeongchang Games, and 7th in 2022 at Beijing. He is known as “Chief,” a play on his name, leadership, and stoic demeanor. According to longtime coach, Andy Gilbert, Josey is technically sound and “…one of the most mentally strong riders I have ever seen. He just has a calm way about him…that is what’s helped him have such a long career.”

In his quiver of tricks is the Switch Double Michalchuk, named for Canadian halfpipe pioneer, Mike Michalchuk. It requires precise rotations, momentum mastery, and a blind finish. Only a few riders in the world have it down. Olympic favorites are riders from New Zealand, Australia, and Japan, but Chase “Chief” Josey is right there, calmly waiting to attack.

JOHNNY STEEL HAGENBUCH

Johnny Steel Hagenbuch played different sports but didn’t focus on cross-country racing until 10 th grade in Community School/Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation programs. His parents are Ivy Leaguers: Kimberly attended Dartmouth, John Sr. Princeton. Team sports and tennis are in the lineage, and though Johnny also attends Dartmouth, he is setting new tracks in skiing.

He has multiple national and NCAA awards and international finishes at varying distances, but according to long-time Nordic guru, Rick Kapala, Johnny is not obsessive like many high achievers. “He is good at training hard, then not training. He has a ton of other interests. Then on race day he’s calm and focused.”

Johnny excels in both freestyle and classic styles, with strength in the 10km free and 4 x 7.5km relay. He hopes to run both at the Games. He’s very appreciative of his coaches over the years and looks forward to representing Team USA, Dartmouth, and the SVSEF at the highest levels.

SAMANTHA SMITH

Samantha Smith is a soccer player for Stanford and a U.S. Team crosscountry ski racer. She was also a top junior mogul skier. On the pitch she can start, stop, feint, and change direction in a flash. On XC sprint tracks she can rip sudden cuts and power bursts, like a bird in flight.

Sammy grew up in Boise, but her athletic family spends considerable time here and she calls the Sun Valley Gold Team her home club. She has multiple awards including World Junior and National Championship medals in skiing. In early January she took gold in Freestyle Sprints at the U.S. Nationals, and two weeks later notched a personal best 12 th at Oberhof, Germany.

Sun Valley XC Coach, Rick Kapala, believes that, in the not-so-polite arena of sprint races, Sammy’s multi-sport background serves her well. “She’s in the moment, she’s fearless in taking chances and opportunities when they open up.”

Sammy is considered a top skier for her age and is rising towards what may be a remarkable two-sport career. 

SUN VALLEY CELEBRATES 90 SEASONS

Providing legendary and memorable winters since 1936

by Sabina Dana Plasse
photos from Sun Valley Resort

When Averell Harriman, Chief Executive of the Union Pacific Railroad, aimed to expand passenger rail traffic to the West, it coincided with the rising popularity of alpine skiing. With plans to open a ski resort, Harriman hired Austrian Count Felix Schaffgotsch, who explored the Rocky Mountains for the ideal location, leading him to Idaho’s Wood River Valley.

Alpine skiing was added to the Winter Olympics in 1936, the same year Harriman opened Sun Valley Resort and introduced the world’s first chairlift. As the ski industry expanded with gondolas, snowmaking, laminated skis, and now snowboards, mountain snow sports are more popular than ever on Bald Mountain, also known as Baldy. Remnants of Sun Valley’s skiing roots can still be seen on Proctor Mountain, which overlooks Sun Valley Resort, with Baldy in the distance and Dollar Mountain nearby.

Many stories recount how Sun Valley Resort grew in popularity by attracting guests, celebrities, and movie studio executives, as well as those seeking to meet others on the Snowball Express train from Los Angeles. The

“In the sea of sameness among American ski resorts, we are proud to be independent and unique, and we’ll continue to work hard to stay that way.”

area also drew athletes and Ketchum locals who became winter sports enthusiasts, many of whom are authentic, with their heritage preserved in Valley museums and at Champion Meadows, where statues stand tall in tribute to Sun Valley’s Olympic women. With the return of the Audi FIS World Cup Finals in 2025, many skiing champions returned after decades to enjoy a place and a mountain they love.

“Honoring our heritage doesn’t mean standing still,” says Sun Valley Resort Chief Operating Officer Pete Sonntag. “Sun Valley has a long history of investing in what matters, in ways that set us apart. The construction of the Sun Valley Lodge in 1936 and the invention of the world’s first chairlift set a high bar for the resort.” He adds, “Since then, countless projects have reaffirmed our commitment to doing things the right way, from a fully automated snowmaking system to the most efficient lift network in the country. When the Sun Valley Lodge was remodeled a decade ago, it brought a legendary hotel to modern-day premium status. More recently, Sun Valley hosted the Audi FIS World Cup Finals and reintroduced this amazing resort to the world. The event’s immediate success and the way it captivated athletes, coaches, and spectators were as big a stamp of approval as we could ever dream of.”

Today, Sun Valley is more than just a ski town. It is a four-season resort where modern ski culture thrives and where every active, adventurous person can push themselves at high altitude. It’s also a center for wellness and culture, attracting talented artisans, writers, and entrepreneurs. Ernest Hemingway called it home, where he wrote For Whom the Bell Tolls. Hemingway’s legacy is ingrained in a much-sought-after writer’s residency retreat at the Hemingway House and Preserve, managed by The Community Library Association.

It is regarded as the most authentic mountain town in the Rocky Mountain West, where upscale outdoor lifestyles blend luxury with small-town charm. It centers on world-class fishing, miles of singletrack, uncrowded slopes and Nordic trails, extensive hiking, epic gravel biking, vibrant arts, a thriving fine-dining scene, and shopping from boutiques to thrift stores. It also features the renowned Sun Valley Music Festival at the Sun Valley Pavilion, celebrity appeal, and the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve, which offers year-round breathtaking night skies filled with the Milky Way. It is perfect for nature lovers seeking an active, high-quality mountain retreat with big-city amenities, set amid the stunning mountain environment of the Pioneer, Boulder, Smoky, White Cloud, and Sawtooth Mountain Ranges.

There is a hidden history as a sanctuary for billionaires, media moguls from the famous Allen & Co. conference, and well-known figures, with a sense of historic glamour that is always part of the conversation. Yet locals and generations of families see it as home and work hard to keep it that way, even as housing and living costs continue to climb. An influx of newcomers since the pandemic has exposed what was once quiet and hidden. Yet multigenerational families still call Sun Valley home and have greatly contributed to its allure and charm over the past nine decades.

“We always talk about the ‘magic of Sun Valley,’ and it can be hard to put into words, but there’s a feeling you get when you step into the Sun Valley Lodge, cross the bridge at River Run, or stand at the top of Baldy and gaze at the incredible mountains in every direction,” shares Sonntag. “These special moments, and countless others, reflect the care and commitment the company has made to honoring its roots and staying true to the idea that you can create a high-end ski experience welcoming to all. In the sea of sameness among American ski resorts, we are proud to be independent and unique, and we’ll continue to work hard to stay that way.” 

STANLEY’S WINTERFEST

Wacky Winter Fun

It’s time to get your crazy on for the 17th annual Stanley Winterfest, an epic weekend filled with music and mountain town mayhem. This family-friendly event happens every President’s Day weekend where it’s all about snow, thrills, and keeping it weird with quirky competitions, community spirit, and plenty of hot springs to steam in. The celebratory weekend is a sure-fire cure for cabin fever, a time to gather for fellowship and merriment, and to celebrate old traditions.

The fun begins with a kick-off party Friday night at 8pm with live music at Mountain Village Resort’s Velvet Falls Dance Hall by folk-rock indie band, Canyon Kids and Low-Fi. Over at Kasino Club, David Henry brings his pure Americana tunes at 9pm.

Saturday morning at 11am, the Stanley School kids will perform at Velvet Falls Dance Hall, with the guidance of Boise Rock School, an independent, nonprofit arts education organization. At noon, the fun begins on Ace of Diamonds and Wall Streets with the Adult Big Wheel race to start the wacky and weird event lineup. Throughout the day, Mountain Village Resort, Kasino Club, Stanley High Country Inn, and Papa Brunee’s will have good eats available for purchase. Cookies and cocoa are offered at the Stanley Library beginning at 11am.

The “Howlin’ Wolf” Raft Ride, the largest event and by far the most favorite, operates from 12:30-4:30pm and runs down the hill from the airstrip to behind the Mercantile. Snowcats transfer participants to the top of the hill, load them up in whitewater rafts, then

Canyon Kids
Low-Fi

send them down a groomed track at screaming speeds rivaling roller coasters. Not to worry though, there’s a berm at the end to capture the speed and begin the slow volley to a stop.

A street dance with live music at 1pm by Low-Fi and Canyon Kids sets the afternoon tone for a slew of crazy competition. Papa Brunee’s Pizza Slam welcomes competitors to devour as much pizza as they can in five minutes. Whoever eats the most wins $100. Other events include a children’s and adult’s threelegged race, a Drag snowshoe race, followed by the Chuck-aPuck fundraising event, and a Human Ice Tug. The ultimate Stanley showdown—the outrageous Outhouse Race—begins at 5pm. Hard-core competitors begin building their contraptions months in advance, and the event has become so popular that competition heats are required. It’s a crowd-viewing favorite down Ace of Diamonds. Rules and regulations are found on the website. All events are subject to snow conditions.

The always fun Mountain Village Resort Beach Party with DJ has been moved to Saturday evening, where beach attire is

encouraged for a costume contest. The Velvet Falls Dance Hall event begins at 8pm for 21+. David Henry’s round two begins at 9pm at Kasino Club.

Attendance at Winterfest is free thanks to sponsorships and merchandise sales—hats, beanies, sweatshirts, stickers, and more. Any proceeds go back to Stanley community nonprofits through a grant process. The only events that aren’t free include the raft ride with purchase of the unlimited snowcat rides to the top, fees which are given back to the snowcat operators for fuel and maintenance. The pizza slam entry is $20 to offset the winner’s prize.

Waivers and registration are required for event participation so be sure to sign the waiver on the Winterfest website at stanleywinterfest.com ahead of time to avoid the lines at the Winterfest tent. Stop by the Winterfest tent to grab your wristbands and register for specific events, after your waiver has been completed. Whether you’re racing, cheering, or just there for the laughs, Winterfest is a tradition you won’t want to miss.  stanleywinterfest.com

Sun Valley interior designers bring their most stylish, luxurious designs and creativity to every room for SVPN Magazine’s February 2026 Style Dial. We are loaded and ready to live in the most beautiful home imaginable—a kitchen to dream in, a dining room to desire, a living room to retreat to, a bedside luxury, and a divine bathroom. There’s a look and feel you may not be able to resist, a charm found only in Sun Valley.

OUTSIDE IN

“We set out to create an interior that complemented the natural beauty outside,” says Sarahliz, founder and principal of Sarahliz Lawson Design. “With the freedom of a new build, the focus was on timeless refinement—an inviting retreat designed for unwinding after a day on the slopes. Layered textures and grounded tones infuse the home with both warmth and quiet elegance.”

REDEFINED DINING

“This dining space embraces quiet sophistication, where understated luxury feels both intentional and inviting,” says Marina Broschofsky, owner of Red Door Home + Design. “Grounded in warm neutrals, the room balances plush, tactile upholstery with clean-lined structure, creating a setting of warmth, balance, and effortless elegance.”

SPACE BETWEEN

“This bathroom balances a light, fresh palette with the warmth of natural wood, creating a space that feels both calm and inviting,” say Rosemary Spiller and Erika Blank of Studio Boden.

“A custom linen cabinet tower placed between the two sinks transforms what is typically unused wall space into highly functional storage. The vertical design offers generous closed storage, keeping the countertops clutter-free. It’s a subtle but impactful detail that emphasizes the beauty and livability of the space.”

THE TEST OF TIME

“We encourage our clients to consider natural materials whenever possible,” says Allison Connolly, owner of Allison Paige Interior Design. “Solid wood cabinets and Carrara marble countertops in this home will stand the style test of time. While these materials are sure to patina as years go by, we believe this only makes them more lovely.”

SKIN HEALTH IN THE SUN

Prevention and early detection matter

We all like to have fun in the sun, but too much of a good thing can be harmful. Excessive sun exposure can lead to skin cancer, which can significantly affect our lives and even be deadly.

As a double board-certified dermatologist and dermatopathologist, I have dedicated my career to preventing, detecting early, and accurately diagnosing skin cancer. I completed advanced fellowship training in dermatopathology at the University of Pennsylvania, where I focused on diagnosing skin conditions at the microscopic and genetic levels, including complex and early-stage cutaneous cancers. That additional training matters—it strengthens my ability to identify subtle, concerning skin changes, confirm diagnoses with greater precision, and guide patients toward the most effective treatments.

Skin cancer is complex and does not always announce itself with pain, itching, or a concerning appearance. Most of the time, it develops quietly and slowly over years, and patients notice nothing unusual. Only when left unchecked do noticeable symptoms develop. This is a point I stress to all my patients, and it is why prevention and early screening are critical.

Sun exposure is the single greatest preventable risk factor for skin cancer. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation in sunlight damages the DNA of our skin cells. Over time, that damage accumulates, leading to abnormal cell growth and, ultimately, cancer. This risk isn’t limited to intermittent, high-intensity sun exposure, such as a beach vacation. It also comes from day-to-day life: outdoor work, time on the ski slopes, fly fishing on the river, trail running, bike rides, and running errands throughout the day. Most people underestimate the impact of cumulative exposure, but your skin remembers every unprotected hour.

Skin cancer is complex and does not always announce itself with pain, itching, or a concerning appearance. Most of the time, it develops quietly and slowly over years, and patients notice nothing unusual.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are the most frequently diagnosed and are often easily treatable when detected early. For early disease, simple procedures, topical creams, and minor surgeries can be employed for early disease. However, if left unchecked, these skin cancers can develop infiltrative growth patterns and require more complex surgical treatment or immunotherapy or chemoradiation. Melanoma is less common but more dangerous, as it has a higher likelihood of spreading or metastasizing throughout the body at advanced stages.

Early skin cancers can be subtle. They may appear as a small scaly patch, a pink bump that occasionally bleeds, or a mole that changes so slowly it is hard to notice. Some lesions look harmless, others are hidden in places you do not routinely check, and some develop in areas that do not see the light of day. Many cause no discomfort at all! Because of this, regular skin checks performed by a board-certified dermatologist are crucial for identifying

skin cancer at its earliest stage. My specialized training in dermatopathology supports earlier detection by sharpening pattern recognition and ensuring that when a biopsy is needed, the diagnosis is made with a high level of accuracy and confidence. Early detection often means smaller procedures, fewer complications, and better outcomes.

Prevention is equally essential and something everyone can do. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) every day on exposed skin, even in winter and on cloudy days. Apply it generously and reapply every two hours, or sooner if you are sweating or in water. Sunscreen works best when paired with smart sun behaviors: seek shade during peak hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.), wear a wide-brimmed hat, and use UV-protective clothing.

I am excited to bring my expertise and patient-centered care to the Wood River Valley at St. Luke’s Wood River Medical Center, alongside Dr. Matthew Reeck, Caroline Hobbs, NP, and my longtime friend and colleague, Dr. Garrett Coman. Together, we are committed to providing world-class dermatologic care focused on prevention, early detection, and thoughtful treatment. We aim to help our community continue to enjoy life outdoors with greater confidence and safety.

Too much fun in the sun can come at a cost. The good news is that with consistent sun protection and routine skin checks, skin cancer is both preventable and easily treatable. 

NOT YOUR STANDARD INJECTION

Why Peptides Are the Newest Luxury Item

Luxury used to mean things.

A bag. A car. A watch. A house with a view.

Now? Luxury is time. Luxury is recovery. Luxury is getting your body back faster than it “should.”

For those of us who’ve invested in our bodies, orthopedic work, joint replacements, years of movement, miles on skis and trails, what we want isn’t immortality. It’s momentum. And that’s where peptides quietly enter the conversation.

If you’re a professional athlete, or simply someone who values performance, independence, and staying active well into the later decades, you’ve probably heard whispers. A teammate is on them. A friend’s friend healed suspiciously fast. And no, we’re not talking about weight-loss drugs (though yes, some peptides like semaglutide and tirzepatide have taken the obesity epidemic by storm).

This is a different category entirely.

Precision recovery, redefined.

Peptides represent a shift from volume-based treatments to intelligent cellular signaling, supporting repair, regeneration, and recovery at the source.

BIOPUNCTURE IN PRACTICE.

An advanced technique derived from acupuncture, biopuncture blends Eastern anatomical mapping with modern regenerative science, using precise injection points to enhance circulation, tissue signaling, and localized healing.

SAME NEEDLE. DIFFERENT OUTCOMES.

For years, we’ve been conditioned to see healing through neat little lanes, often using the same tool, with very different intentions:

Diagnostic blood draws + injections → hospital-based medicine

Nutrient shots + IVs → modern wellness

Neurotoxins + fillers → clinical aesthetics

Acupuncture needles → Eastern medicine (Have you tried it?)

But then there’s the question no one can quite answer out loud, at least not within those tidy boxes:

How does your favorite NFL player tear a ligament and return to the field weeks later?

Your mind explodes twice. First, because it happens at all. Second, because they come charging back while you, who actually takes care of yourself, step wrong on the ski hill and can’t ski again for a year.

That’s not bad luck.

That’s access.

Access to a category of care that doesn’t rely on volume or surfacelevel treatment, but on precision. Peptides are typically delivered through small, targeted micro-injections, designed to communicate directly with the body’s repair and regeneration systems.

PEPTIDES, EXPLAINED SIMPLY

What are peptides?

Short chains of amino acids that act as messengers, telling the body when and how to repair, regenerate, and recover. How are they used?

Typically delivered through small, targeted microinjections to communicate directly with specific tissues and systems.

Are they pharmaceuticals?

No. Peptides are naturally occurring in the body and largely unpatentable, which is why they exist outside traditional drug pathways.

Are they safe?

When sourced properly and administered by trained professionals using certified medical injection techniques, peptides have a strong safety profile. Most reported issues stem from improper dosing or untrained administration.

Who are they for?

People who value recovery, mobility, skin integrity, and staying active, especially those navigating orthopedic healing, aging joints, or performance plateaus.

SKIN REGENERATION IS CELLULAR WORK.

Copper peptides support collagen and elastin repair, wound healing, and skin integrity, because true longevity starts from the inside out.

Take Aaron Rodgers’ 2023 Achilles rupture, an injury that traditionally sidelines athletes for an entire season, if not longer. Yet within weeks, he was publicly documenting advanced rehabilitation, neuromuscular training, red-light therapy, and regenerative interventions. The response across sports medicine wasn’t disbelief, it was recognition.

This isn’t about recklessness. It’s about being having resources.

THE GRAY AREA EVERYONE’S WHISPERING ABOUT

Peptides live in the gray area of medicine, outside traditional pharmaceutical lanes, but firmly grounded in clinical science and elite medical practice.

They’re not advertised on billboards. Yet they are powerful in practice. Peptides are naturally occurring chains of amino acids that act as messengers in the body, telling cells when to repair, regenerate, reduce inflammation, or rest. They already exist inside us. But as we age, over-train, under-recover, or simply live very full lives, those signals weaken.

When peptides are reintroduced strategically, the body doesn’t feel “hacked.” It feels reminded

Because peptides are naturally occurring and largely unpatentable, you can’t own nature; they haven’t followed the traditional pharmaceutical pathway. There’s little financial

incentive for large-scale drug development, which is why peptides don’t move through the same hospital-insurance systems as conventional drugs. Their “research use” labels reflect the economics of medicine, not a lack of relevance or efficacy.

Historically, this is where innovation lives before profit catches up.

FROM UNDERGROUND TO ACCESSIBLE

Here’s what’s changing.

Advanced integrative therapies, once reserved for elite athletes and private medical circles, are becoming more accessible through regenerative medicine and integrative wellness settings, including clinics like Monarch here in the valley and forward-thinking centers across the country.

You may hear terms like biopuncture, peptide therapy, or regenerative medicine. In the past, access sometimes meant being quietly “taken to Mexico” by a concierge physician to explore protocols outside conventional systems. You may know someone. You may be that someone.

Increasingly, however, peptides are being responsibly integrated closer to home, within structured programs that prioritize medicalgrade sourcing, certified injection techniques, personalization, and whole-body alignment.

Importantly, “underground” does not mean unqualified. When done correctly, peptide administration uses the same sterile, clinically certified injection standards found in conventional

care. In integrative settings, these protocols are often paired with biopuncture, a method that blends advanced Chinese medicine training with precise peptide delivery into key anatomical and circulatory points to support localized healing and recovery.

This is not medicine opposing the system. It’s medicine filling the gaps the system was never designed to address.

REAL-WORLD OUTCOMES

What This Looks Like in Practice

In integrative regenerative settings, peptide therapy paired with biopuncture is increasingly used to support recovery from chronic pain, orthopedic conditions, and post-surgical healing.

Across a recent internal series of clients at Monarch Longevity undergoing a peptide-based “Wolverine Stack” combined with biopuncture techniques:

  9 out of 10 individuals reported approximately an 80% reduction in pain within 3 to 5 days

 Common indications included chronic back pain, arthritis, and post-surgical recovery

 Many clients also reported improvements in sleep quality, mobility, and daily function

These outcomes are not about masking symptoms—they reflect improved cellular signaling, circulation, and downregulation of the nervous system.

ONE STORY THAT STANDS OUT

James, 81, hadn’t slept through the night in more than forty years. For decades, he woke hourly, without a clear diagnosis or single underlying cause, an experience not uncommon among older adults navigating chronic nervous system stress. Within three days of beginning a paired peptide protocol, James began sleeping up to five uninterrupted hours per night, several nights in a row. And that was just the beginning.

SKIN LONGEVITY IS REGENERATIVE MEDICINE, TOO

Aesthetic and regenerative clinics are also adopting peptides for skin recovery and longevity, not vanity, but cellular signaling.

One standout is GHK-Cu (copper peptide), widely studied for its role in collagen synthesis, elastin repair, wound healing, and skin regeneration.

A personal favorite of mine. Wink.

This isn’t about erasing age. It’s about helping skin remember how to repair itself.

THE REGENERATIVE FOUNDATION.

Nutrient IVs often serve as the lynchpin of regenerative protocols, supporting cellular hydration, micronutrient repletion, and treatment-adjacent therapies such as peptides and exosomes.

THIS ISN’T FRINGE, IT’S THE FUTURE

Science is catching up to what elite performance has known for decades. Peerreviewed research published in journals such as Peptides, Regulatory Peptides, and Frontiers in Physiology highlights compounds like BPC-157, TB-500, and GHK-Cu for tissue repair, angiogenesis, inflammation modulation, and collagen remodeling.

Leaders in neuroscience and performance consistently emphasize recovery speed, nervous system regulation, and cellular signaling as foundational to sustained output.

This isn’t experimentation anymore. It’s precision recovery.

ALIGNMENT IS THE REAL SECRET

Peptides aren’t a shortcut. They’re an amplifier.

They work best when paired with:

 Sleep

 Movement

 Nutrition

 Nervous system regulation

 Consistency

We’re doing all the things. We’re trying. But time, that’s the real luxury, and often the first thing we run out of. Peptides don’t replace effort. They respect it.

WHY THIS MATTERS, HERE IN THE VALLEY

We live like we’re going to live forever, because we’re living our best lives now. Longevity here isn’t about extending life at all costs. It’s about preserving quality: time outdoors, time in community, and time doing what we love without being sidelined by injury or prolonged recovery.

So why wouldn’t we embrace the same tools the elite world already uses? The goal isn’t to be superhuman. It’s to recover like one. That’s not indulgence. That’s intelligence.

THE FUTURE IS QUIETLY ARRIVING

Peptides aren’t a trend. They’re a category shift. And while the rest of the world is just beginning to ask questions, some of us have been listening closely for years.

Stay tuned for my upcoming title, Peptides for Dummies, written by yours truly and published by the world’s largest provider of reference texts, available for presale this summer.

The future of recovery is already here.

It’s just been waiting for the rest of the world to catch up. 

BEYOND BIOHACKING

There are no shortcuts to good health

The health and wellness world has become captivated by the idea of “biohacking”—the compelling belief that with the right machine or shortcut, we can override biology and outsmart our own physiology. It is, of course, a compelling narrative in a culture conditioned for speed and immediate results. But the actual truth is that you cannot hack your way into healing.

Human physiology doesn’t respond to tricks; it responds to repair, nourishment, coherence, and the restoration of fundamental systems. All of this takes work. Health isn’t obtained through a shortcut. It’s cultivated through deep alignment with how the nervous system, brain, and organs are designed to function.

Biohacking implies there are loopholes to exploit—quick ways to bypass the body’s systems to force faster results. But biology is not mechanical, nor can it be forced; it is relational and adaptive, with deep intelligence. Most people want to heal, and given the right tools and the removal of stressors, healing can happen. The brain, fascia, neuromuscular system, endocrine network, and emotional centers are living systems that respond to deep intelligence, not quick or forced hacks.

Treating the body as something to “hack” misunderstands its intelligence. When people chase shortcuts, they skip the real work their biology requires: nutrient assimilation through a properly and functioning digestive system (which requires regular cleansing, clean food free of GMOs, toxins, and processed ingredients), nervous system regulation, emotional clarity, healthy movement patterns, restorative sleep, sunlight exposure, and connection with nature and other humans.

Shortcuts may relieve symptoms, but they do not build resilience. Resilience is built when the underlying circuitry—neurological, muscular, metabolic, and emotional—is restored to coherence.

This distinction matters even among the most popular “biohacking” advocates and practices: sauna, cold plunging, infrared therapy, red light panels, PEMF pads, breathwork devices, wearable tech, and all the tools now marketed as the cutting edge of human optimization.

Here is the truth: These tools are valuable. I use them every day. They can absolutely support autonomic regulation, reduce inflammation, modulate stress responses, improve circulation, activate heat-shock proteins, and restore aspects of cellular function. They can speed up healing tenfold. But! You still have to restore the function of the underlying misalignment through neuromuscular activation, nervous system balance, and more.

When someone gets a joint replacement, the conditions that led to that joint replacement are still present. These conditions have to be resolved for full success after joint replacement.

The wellness tools are helpful and can accelerate results. They provide access to physiological states humans have always needed—heat, cold, light, breath, contrast, and recovery. These experiences are not shortcuts; they are forms of input that help the nervous system reorganize.

A cold plunge is not a hack; it is a stimulus that heightens vagal tone and sharpens sensory processing. A sauna is not a hack; it is a metabolic challenge that strengthens cardiovascular adaptability. Infrared is not a hack; it supports mitochondrial signaling that could be suppressed by inflammatory lifestyle habits. These habits need to be resolved.

These tools work because they partner with the body’s design— not because they trick it.

The body cannot tolerate a high level of chronic pain. Cortisone injections can sometimes provide immediate pain relief, yet they also accelerate tissue degeneration and disrupt the inflammatory cascade required for true healing. They silence the signal rather than addressing the cause—and often lead to more severe interventions, like joint replacements, down

the road. If used, the underlying neuromuscular issues, fascial problems, or inflammatory conditions need to be resolved while there is pain relief. Otherwise, the pain can return worse than ever after six months.

The future of health is not about hacks. It is about precise, intelligent restoration—returning the nervous system, neuromuscular system, organ networks, and emotional pathways to harmony. That requires:

 Reinforcing proper neuromuscular activation

 Improving sensory-motor integration

 Rebalancing autonomic states

 Supporting glandular and organ function

 Rebuilding nutrient pathways

 Cultivating emotional coherence

 Reconnecting with nature, rhythm, and real food

 Maintaining positive and supportive relationships with clear boundaries

Ultimately, lasting health comes from restoring the neurological, metabolic, emotional, and structural foundations of the human system. Once that is in place, the rest are incredible tools for accelerated results.

When these systems are restored, the body heals predictably and profoundly. Energy rises, weight normalizes, pain subsides, and clarity sharpens— not because we gamed the body, but because we honored it.

We are entering a more mature era of wellness—one that integrates the best of modern tools with the timeless principles of biology, consciousness, and connection. The most “advanced” health strategies often bring us back to our original design.

No shortcuts, just the intelligence of a system ready to heal once given the right input. Ultimately, lasting health comes from restoring the neurological, metabolic, emotional, and structural foundations of the human system. Once that is in place, the rest are incredible tools for accelerated results. 

Dora Somosi Alchemy of Memory

Hungarian-American photographer Dora Somosi’s debut solo exhibition, Alchemy of Memory, features work from two interconnected series. Somosi explores the blue hues of the cyanotype in both By Her Side and Mending, using the medium to reveal both the material beauty of the natural world and the inherent imperfections of the photographic process.

In By Her Side, Somosi creates a “chosen history” of 25 historical female artists and thinkers whose legacies are intertwined with the natural world. Through exploration and pilgrimage, By Her Side is a contemplative study of the landscapes inhabited by each woman. Somosi’s arboreal portraits serve as living witnesses to these historical figures. By reimagining landscape as portraiture, Somosi successfully captures the essence of each historic figure. Due to the cyanotype process, each photograph is hand-printed, resulting in slight color deviations.

Mending Waves  by Dora Somosi hand-printed cyanotype with embroidery 16.5” x 17”

From flawed and discarded cyanotypes, Somosi’s series, Mending, emerges. Inspired by Hungarian embroidery and needlework, Somosi embroiders over the rich blues of the cast aside prints, creating unique pieces that blend photography and tactile threadwork.

Mending reframes repair as a method of creating, where reuse, slowness, and care are central. An in-depth exploration of the history and processes of natural dyeing is integral to the work. Here, alchemy is approached not as a metaphor but as a practice. Imperfect prints become new images, plants become pigment, and memory is reshaped through repair. Together, the two series position landscape as an active collaborator in an ongoing process of creation, reflection, and learning.

Bastiaan Woudt

Gilman Contemporary is pleased to introduce the work of Dutch photographer Bastiaan Woudt to the Wood River Valley. Woudt has emerged as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary photography, known for monochromatic restraint, striking silhouettes, and an expressive interplay of light and shadow.

Woudt’s photographs occupy a compelling space between haute couture and fine art. His work has been featured at major international art fairs including Paris Photo, AIPAD, and Photo London, and in publications such as Harper’s Bazaar, British Vogue, Numéro, L’Officiel , and New York Magazine. He has also produced commercial campaigns for Chanel, underscoring the versatility of his visual language.

Grounded in themes of purpose and self-discovery, Woudt’s practice also reflects a strong philanthropic commitment, supporting organizations including the Marie-Stella-Maris Foundation, Amsterdam Dinner Foundation, and Orange Babies, which address access to clean water and the fight against HIV and AIDS in developing regions.

The selection on view at Gilman Contemporary Gallery highlights Woudt’s fascination with silhouette and spatial tension. Elegant figures and carefully chosen props create a dreamlike atmosphere where light and shadow reveal the power of form, identity, and presence.

The Shape of Light

In memoriam, Russell Chatham (1939-2019)

Broschofsky Galleries will highlight a group of recent acquisitions by renowned American artist Russell Chatham (1939-2019). In viewing a Chatham painting, one often feels an immediate sense of recognition of place. Yet what is revealed goes beyond the visual—his work conveys a quiet emotional depth, a feeling shaped by light, atmosphere, and memory rather than strict representation. Rooted in the landscapes of the American West, particularly Montana, Chatham’s paintings and lithographs reflect a lifelong engagement with nature and solitude.

Oyster Beds-Marshall by Russell Chatham add oil on linen 65” x 87”

Celebrated for his mastery of mood and restraint, Chatham was also among the most accomplished lithographers of his generation, known for his complex, multilayered printing process and subtle use of color. Over a career spanning five decades, his work was exhibited internationally and widely collected, admired for its poetic balance between presence and absence.

This group of works offers a thoughtful glimpse into Chatham’s enduring ability to evoke landscape not as scenery but as experience.

Also on display

Additional works by gallery artists will also be on display, including Bill Barrett, Duke Beardsley, Rudi Broschofsky, Joan Mitchell, Ken Peloke, Billy Schenck, Theodore Villa, Andy Warhol, David Yarrow, and others.

Molly Haynes

Liquescent

February 6-March 20

OCHI is pleased to present Liquescent, a body of new textile works by San Pedro, California-based artist Molly Haynes. Liquescent features woven works that operate between nature and machine, and between structure and intuition.

Using a manually powered floor loom, Molly Haynes constructs textile sculptures that move from near-translucent lattices to dense accumulations of fiber, anchoring to the wall while projecting into space. Informed by her experience designing for the interior textiles industry, Haynes brings a rigorous understanding of material and structure to her practice, even as she deliberately resists automation. Built row by row, the works remain responsive to the conditions of making, allowing shifts in tension, material, and pattern to soften and destabilize otherwise fixed systems. These deviations activate both surface and form, foregrounding the physical logic of construction and the presence of the hand.

Rooted in both natural and industrial vocabularies, the works reference systems shaped by repetition, from the skeletal logic of desert flora to the vast surface of the sea, while retaining the spatial language of nets, scaffolding, and architectural supports. In Liquescent, Haynes often encases natural fibers and found materials within synthetic frameworks—monofilament, marine rope, and silk—to create hybrid structures that appear to flow and dissolve even as they assert mass and form. Tectonic and biomorphic forces converge, resulting in works that read less as images than as spatial propositions defined by a quiet, deliberate tension.

Vernal Equinox by Donald & Era Farnsworth cotton Jacquard tapestry 76 x 56

Tapestry Exhibition

For thousands of years, humankind has used the medium of tapestry to express itself and record history. In 1804, the Jacquard loom was invented. In this timehonored tradition, a growing group of artists has collaborated with Don and Era Farnsworth, weaving contemporary tapestries in Belgium on historic Jacquard looms. Woven mostly from man-made cotton fibers, these beautiful textiles feature exacting detail and the authentic marks of the artists’ hands, making them thoroughly contemporary tapestries. Since 1998, Donald and Era Farnsworth have collaborated on this tapestry project with such artists as Chuck Close. Included in this exhibition are Hung Liu, Squeak Carnwath, Kiki Smith, Don and Era Farnsworth, and others. With more than 10,000 threads at the artists’ disposal, at a density of 152 threads per inch, these artists are able to interweave color and pattern into soft textile masterpieces.

Out of the Mist

Composed of several series that are grouped thematically, Pegan Brooke, Nicole Charbonnet, Kathy Moss, and Lynda Lowe’s exhibition reads as contemporary abstractions in which individual works function both autonomously and as parts of a larger system of interrelationships. Soft colored forms are mingling, mutating, and slow dancing together. Whether blurring colors and surfaces together or holding them separate, these artists honor surface, paint, color, and light.

Evidence

Featuring the work of Laura McPhee, Laura Wilson, and Jack Spencer, this group photography exhibition branches into more specialized pursuits, presenting a selection of images the artists made while searching the landscape in various places, including Idaho, the desert West, and Texas. The images include color, black-and-white, and stained images—inviting all manner of speculation about what they might be or represent. They are records of our changing landscapes, human accidents, and interventions. They also include experiments in light and texture, people, and places, while holding meaning beyond first impressions.

RELATIVE MOTION

February 3-28

This February, Hemmings Gallery is pleased to present RELATIVE MOTION , a group show that examines the complex relationship between motion and meaning in art. When motion is used as a guiding principle, an artist can direct the viewer’s eye, creating a sense of action, rhythm, and dynamism in their work.

Color contrasts and variations in brushwork—smooth versus energetic, controlled versus gestural, for example—can create a sense of directional force and tempo. Meaning emerges alongside this perceived motion. Yet what feels like chaos to one observer may suggest freedom or vitality to another.

Visit Hemmings Gallery for a closer look at how its artists explore the relative nature of motion and meaning in art and what can be learned from the relationship between the observer and the observed.

Pioneer Saloon

Walking into the Pioneer Saloon in Ketchum is like greeting an old friend. It’s often the first stop for locals coming home or visitors starting a memorable vacation. For more than 50 years, the Pioneer has been welcoming its loyal customers with a warm and cozy atmosphere that feels more like someone’s home than a restaurant. Renowned for perfectly aged and flavorful beef, many varieties of seafood, fresh Idaho rainbow trout, and Northwest regional specials, the Pioneer is much more than a steakhouse. Unique and historic western art fills the bar and restaurant, reminiscent of earlier days when pioneers settled in this valley. Authentic and genuine friendly service from familiar faces will make you feel as though you have arrived home when you walk in the door. As the locals say, “If you haven’t been to the Pioneer Saloon, you haven’t been to Ketchum.”

If you haven’t been to the Pioneer Saloon, you haven’t been to Ketchum!

sawtoothclub.com

Always busy with a fun mix of locals and visitors alike, The Sawtooth Club has been downtown Ketchum’s most beloved destination for dining and cocktails since the days when Ernest Hemingway himself was a regular there. Nowadays, the place is more popular than ever with an inspired menu offering a mouthwatering blend of creative small plates to share, grilled steaks, chops & ribs, healthy vegetarian dishes, fresh seafood, unique pasta bowls, nightly specials, and much more.

In the bar, enjoy handcrafted cocktails, 16 wines by the glass, and 12 ice-cold craft brews on tap. Dinner offerings this season include fresh Idaho trout, filet mignon, linguine with clams, chicken Senegalese, flatiron steak bearnaise, rack of lamb, ribeye steak, butternut squash ravioli, Manchester Farms quail, BBQ baby back ribs, vegan noodle bowl, Wagyu beef meatloaf, pasta Portofino, baked brie en croute, fresh steamer clams, seared ahi salad, awesome burgers and sandwiches, to name just a few.

Much of our grilling is done over a live mesquite fire. This method of natural wood cooking generates the intense heat that sears in the flavorful juices and imparts a variety of subtle tastes and aromas to meat, poultry and seafood.

An award-winning wine list complements the wonderful food, and winter nights around the large central fireplace are not to be missed. One visit and you’ll know why The Sawtooth Club has repeatedly been voted the “Valley’s Best Overall Restaurant and The Valley’s Best Bar!”

The Cellar Pub

Head down the stairs and you’re instantly in one of Ketchum’s classic rites of passage—a traditional pub energy hit with the perfect pint of Guinness waiting at the bottom. The Cellar’s patio hums in summer, but inside is where the magic happens: locals, visitors, and ski bums packed around wooden tables, digging into Fish & Chips, Bangers & Mash, or the legendary Old-Fashioned Bar Burger.

Late-night? Even better. The full bar is stacked with draft beers and daily drink-and-shot specials. Music and sports memorabilia cover the walls, giving the whole place that lived - in, good -times - happen - here feel. Wander to the back and you’ll find booths made for storytelling, a free full - size shuffleboard table that’s probably older than half the crowd and a Big Buck Hunter arcade game. You don’t just leave The Cellar Pub with a full belly—you leave with a story.

Few other restaurants in Ketchum are as steeped in history as the legendary Christiania. To get your own glimpse of ski history, come to the famous Olympic Bar, where photos and mementos from former owner Michel Rudigoz’s time as the U.S. Women’s Olympic Ski Team Coach adorn the walls. For a true culinary experience, you will enjoy French cuisine

that is also inspired by Michel’s background in Lyon (the country’s culinary capital). Your meal will be a pièce de résistance!
