Did you know that health experts recommend that children should be active for at least 60 minutes each day and spend no more than 2 hours a day using screens?
This can be hard to achieve, so Go Golborne has created this booklet full of ideas for screen-free activities for children. All of the activities are in easy reach of North Kensington and are either free or low cost.*
Many of the centres featured in this guide are giving out special Unplug & Play stickers to children who mention the campaign when they visit. Add a sticker or colour in the Unplug & Play motif as you complete each activity.
Tweet us @rbkc_families using #unplug&play to show us how you like to Unplug & Play or email a picture to gogolborne@rbkc.gov.uk to claim your limited edition pin badge!
Go Golborne is a local campaign led by the Council that’s all about supporting children and families to eat well and keep active – find out more www.rbkc.gov.uk/gogolborne
*Note for parents: this is not a comprehensive summary of all local services but a list of ideas that includes lots of local things to do and places to go
Why do we need to Unplug & Play?
Too much screen time can be bad for our health. It can cause us to have difficulty getting enough sleep, which can affect how we feel and how well we can concentrate on things. If we spend lots of time sitting around on screens it probably means that we are not spending enough time being active, which can cause us to get unfit. This is why we should all try to be active for at least 60 minutes each day and spend no more than 2 hours a day using screens.
Here are some top tips from the experts:
• Try to avoid screens in the mornings before school so you have a calm start to the day
• Avoid watching screens while eating meals – concentrate on enjoying your food and chatting to your family instead!
• Try to make bedtime screen-free and keep screens out of bedrooms – this makes for a better night’s sleep
• Make screen time into a special event, such as a family ‘movie night’
• Use a timer to keep track of how much time you are spending on screens
• Keep busy with lots of screen-free activities – like the ones in this booklet!
Grab a towel and head to the pool to splash, jump, dive and practice your strokes.
