Welcometo the St Dunstan’s College Festival 2021.Our annual celebration of art, culture and community returns this year on Sunday 27 June in a brand-new format. This year we are putting up a Festival style big-top on the Jubilee Grounds as our main venue, seating 400 in the theatre section and over 200 in the hospitality area as well providing a dedicated exhibition space. We are really excited to be able to offer over 100 events this year across 4 ‘Zones’; the Main Stage will host our headline events, the Fringe will celebrate a wide range of thought and experience in a small setting, the Courage Zone encourages you to step out of your comfort zone and try something new, and the Arena offers opportunity to compete with others in a range of ways. This programme showcases some of the highlights of the Festival and you are warmly invited to join us at many of the events detailed within. We are particularly delighted this year to open more events
to the public and to engage in raising money and awareness for a number of community based charities. This is an exciting step on the journey to really establish the Festival as part of our local community.
In the light of all we have been through over the past 18 months the theme of the Festival this year is Celebrating Courageous Community. We are proud of how students, staff, their families and the local community have responded to the pandemic and we are excited to have an opportunity to celebrate that together.
I am most grateful, as ever, to all who will make the Festival such a success and particularly to our local sponsor, KFH, for supporting us again, alongside the support of The Dunstonian Association. I look forward to seeing you across the course of the Festival.
Mr Richard Gregg Director of St Dunstan’s College Festival
Dunstan’s College
St Dunstan’s Festival originated in the 1990s under the stewardship of Dr Anthony Seldon, who was Deputy Head of the College at that time. It was originally named ‘The Catford Arts Festival’ and ran over two and a half days at the very start of July.
The Festival was quickly dubbed ‘The Edinburgh Festival of South London’, and comprised over twenty main events and ‘a rich and enterprising fringe’. The 1994 College Chronicle describes the Festival as ‘catering for the souls’ and it contained an array of eclectic events including the St Dunstan’s jazz group, lectures given by
writers Brian Masters and Gwendoline Butler, and a Shakespeare play with a twist, entitled ‘A Pocket of Midsummer Night’s Dream’. The Festival was shortlived, only lasting a few years.
The current Headmaster reignited the Festival on his arrival at the College, with its relaunch occurring in the summer of 2015. The now two-week event is a firmly established highlight at the end of the academic year, enabling pupils to engage with a huge variety of activities and performances, involving not only the College, but also our broader Lewisham community.

The Drama Department presents ‘Lucy Light’ by Sarah Milton. A story that spans ten years, Lucy Light is a powerful duologue between two women that offers a nostalgic look at our relationship with our bodies, the hereditary nature of cancer, and the strength of female friendships. (Strong language and mature themes.)

Join us for the launch of our purpose built art installation. Inspired by the work of Gabriel Orozco, the art department worked with all members of the school body, students, teachers and support staff, to make an impression of the interior space of our hands. These individual, small, hand pressed clay sculptures convey the touch and physicality that has been so missed during this year of lockdown. These representations of connection come together to show our continued strength and closeness as a community; our resilience formed in earth and solidified in fire.

Yes you can play hockey, but can you play in fancy dress? This is your chance to take part in the craziest hockey tournament of your life.

Have you ever felt threatened by a man? Have you ever been harassed? Do you feel safe walking down the street at night? For most women, the answer to all of these questions will follow a unfortunate thread. ‘Our Land’ aims to delve into this shared trauma, celebrating the ability of women to find collective strength and rebuild each other in the face of adversity. Inspired by Shakespeare’s ‘A Winter’s Tale’, this devised movement piece pairs unison movement alongside verbatim and Shakespearian text to expose the unjust pain of womanhood whilst conjuring a pronounced female power. Production in aid of the charity ‘Refuge’. (Mature themes.)

KS3 students get ready to live in space. This competition gives you the opportunity to design your own space station in teams of 12. You will spend the day creating your space station which you will then present at the end of the day to see who is crowned ruler of space.

Speaker Emily Folorunsho will explore the lesser-known history of some important Black figures in British History. As a history teacher, a lead practitioner, SLE, & Governor and an examiner for OCR A Level, Emily is passionate about the next generation loving history.

The Dunstonian Association is delighted to be associated with this year’s Festival and, in particular, to support the Senior School musical, ‘Once on this Island’. This story is one of the triumph of love and hope over death, a fitting subject as we emerge from the challenges of the last year.
We wish the cast and all the Festival’s production team the very best of luck and thank them for what will no doubt be another wonderful celebration of the arts.
Best wishes
David Edwards Chair

The aim of the Development Office is to help the College achieve its ambitious future plans for the radical and visionary development of the school’s facilities. In addition, it is our hope that the Office helps to establish productive longterm relationships across our wide-reaching community: Dunstonians at home and overseas, past and current parents, livery companies or corporations.
Bursaries at St Dunstan’s give bright children from all backgrounds the chance of an excellent, and often life-changing, education. We know from experience that bursary students also make an important contribution to our school community and last year we were able to support 59 talented children in this way.

Bursaries are currently funded solely through school income. Each year, we strive to increase the number of bursaries we award, not only so that more bright children benefit but also to ensure that our student community is as dynamic and diverse as the world around it.
This year, more families than ever are facing more challenging financial circumstances as result of a pandemic which has affected people’s income and livelihoods, and we want to be ready to respond. We want to dramatically increase the funds we have available to support talented children from lower-income families. This can only be done with significant help and we ask you to consider making a gift to help us extend the reach of our bursary programme.
If you would like to know more about our plans for the development of the College or learn how you can support us, please contact:
