Party crashers stab teen

An 18-year-old Point Cook man was stabbed eight times at a Hoppers Crossing party in what police have described as a frenzied and cowardly attack.

Werribee police said the man was a guest at a debutante ball a er-party on Saturday, August 9,whenagroupofaboutsixgatecrashersturned up about 9.45pm.

Trimboli told Star Weekly the group assaulted one of the invited guests, leaving him with cuts to his face, before turning on the second man.

“It appears the second victim was picked for no reason and he received eight puncture wounds to his back and chest,” Senior Constable Trimboli said.

“It was a pretty frenzied attack that demonstrates a high degree of cowardice. e victim tried to leave the party but collapsed on the street a few metres away.”

e man su ered a pierced pericardium, the sack that surrounds the heart, and two

collapsed lungs. Police escorted him to Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he had emergency surgery.

He remains in the intensive care unit in a serious condition.

Senior Constable Trimboli said the attackers rst stabbed the victim in the back.

“One of the stab wounds came within millimetres of puncturing the man’s heart,” he said. “ ese kids were just having a good time when these louts came along and decided they were going to ruin their night.

“Unfortunately, they went there with the

Metropolitan Planning Authority (MPA) chief executive Peter Seamer con rmed that land directly behind Werribee police station had been set aside for a justice precinct.

Mr Potaris has been behind a campaign to get the state government and opposition to commit to the project which, he said, was overdue in Wyndham.

Growing pains for Wyndham

Wyndham’s population has uno cially hit 200,000.

According to Werribee police Inspector Damien Christensen, the city’s population of Wyndham has reached 202,135.

Inspector Damien Christensen said the gure was provided by Wyndham council, but gures supplied by the council to Star Weekly do not match, instead having 192,337 people living in Wyndham as of June.

Whether the o cial population is 200,000 or not, Wyndham mayor Bob Fairclough said the municipality was struggling to cope with the growing number of residents.

“ is continued growth is not sustainable unless it is matched by an increase in services and infrastructure,” Cr Fairclough said.

“Wyndham simply cannot do this alone and is very dependent on the state government to provide a large share of the funding.”

Cr Fairclough said Wyndham needed morearterialroadupgrades, newschools, expansion of existing schools, hospital upgrades, extensions to bus services and an expansion of a number of health and community services.

“ is residential growth creates pressuresonaverybroadrangeofcouncil services, from maternal and child health through to aged-care and community and sporting infrastructure,” he said.

According to id Population Forecasts, 11 babies are being born in Wyndham every day and the overall population is increasing by 19 people every day.

Holding onto hope

For one Wyndham Vale mother, waking up at 3am and calling for her son to get her medication while she’s lying on the oor, unable to move, is an almost daily occurrence.

Glenda Dyson was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease 13 years ago, aged 34. Her condition has got progressively worse, and when the 15 tablets she takes every day start to wear o , she’s a prisoner in her own body.

Her son Luke, 15, has become her carer, balancing high school with his mother’s needs. What makes the situation even more painful forMsDysonisthefactthatanoperationcould almost rid her of the symptoms of the disease, which a ects the control of body movements.

Ms Dyson is a candidate for deep brain stimulation, an operation that could improve her condition by 90 to 95 per cent.

But because the single mother cannot a ord the $50,000 needed for the operation, she’s being forced to spend up to two years on a public waiting list.

“I’m deteriorating fast,” Ms Dyson says. “If go down the street I’ll get stuck, because the medication wears o and I can’t walk any further. I’ll have to wait for this operation, but I’ll probably be bed-ridden by then.”

Ms Dyson said she had lost all quality of life and sometimes dreaded waking up in the morning.

Parkinson’s Victoria is organising a fund-raising walk for su erers of the disease on Sunday, August 31.

e annual event in Melbourne’s CBD raises awareness and funds for services and research to improve the quality of life for people living with Parkinson’s. For more details, visit www. parkinsonswalk.com.au.

Future of jobs group unclear

A learning and employment network fears it will be unable to help young people in Wyndham and Hobsons Bay nd work or training programs beyond next year if the state government doesn’t commit to ongoing funding.

egovernmentlastweeksaiditwould provide Victoria’s 31 Local Learning and Employment Networks (LLENs) with $8 million to allow them to continue operating next year.

As reported by Star Weekly, LLENs faced having to close their doors a er federal funding was cut in this year’s budget. WynBay LLEN had its budget slashed by $2.3 million.

Labor has promised to provide LLENs withatotalof$32millionoverfouryears if it wins November’s state election.

But the state government has committedtoprovidingfundingforonly one year, saying it will seek new funding arrangements for 2016.

WynBay LLEN chairman Barry Harvey said the government’s decision le the network’s future in doubt.

e network fears about 16,000 students in Wyndham and Hobsons Bay will lose access to education, training and employment programs in the next 12 months if the state governmentdoesn’tcommittoproviding more money.

“Funding for only one year creates uncertainty for us and for the young people we advocate for,” Mr Harvey said.

Wyndham motorists to feel the petrol tax pain

Wyndham residents who drive to work in the CBD and inner suburbs are tipped to be among the worst a ected by a proposed fuel excise increase.

Figures from the state Auditor-General’s o cerevealWyndhamresidentstravelsomeof the longest distances to get to work.

e Auditor-General found Wyndham motorists drive an average of 25 kilometres each way daily.

e Victorian Council of Social Service (VCOSS) said the data showed a major impact

that higher petrol prices would have on low-income families living on Melbourne’s urbanfringe, incontrasttocommentsmadeby federal Treasurer Joe Hockey last week.

Mr Hockey claimed high-income families would feel the impact of a planned fuel tax increase more than low-income families, because the “poorest people either don’t have cars or actually don’t drive very far in many cases”.

VCOSS chief executive Emma King said Wyndham residents had higher travel costs

and were more likely to experience “transport poverty” than people in inner-city suburbs.

“Growth corridors like Melton and Wyndham don’t have the same access to public transport so they rely on cars,” she said.

“People are moving to these areas a lot of the time because of housing a ordability and have to rely on cars to travel to jobs closer in.’’

Lalor MP Joanne Ryan said Mr Hockey’s comments showed he was out of touch.

“Almost 60 per cent of Lalor families have two or more vehicles and Joe Hockey fails to

understand the impact his petrol tax will have on local families,” she said.

e National Growth Areas Authority, representing 25 growth councils including Wyndham, also rejected Mr Hockey’s comments, for which he has since apologised.

“Residentsinoutersuburbsalreadypayahigh price for living there. Higher fuel prices, and still sitting for hours on congested roads, will add to their burden,” authority chairman Glenn Docherty said.

Works target crash-prone corner

One of Wyndham’s most dangerous intersections, at Palmers and Leakes roads in Truganina, is to be upgraded to make it safer.

Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Andrew Elsbury says the state government will provide $2.5 million for the job in a bid to cut the numberofcollisionsinthearea, manyofwhich occur when drivers have to choose a safe gap in oncoming tra c to turn right.

ere were 18 casualty crashes at the intersectioninthe veyearstoJune2012, with eight resulting in serious injury.

“ e works will upgrade the signals at all sidesofthebusyintersection,”MrElsburysaid.

“Drivers will a receive ‘green time’ to turn right, which will make navigating the intersection easier and safer.

“Other improvements include an additional laneforLeakesRoadattheintersectioninboth

directions and a second right-turn lane for south-bound vehicles turning from Palmers Road into Leakes Road.”

Wyndham mayor Bob Fairclough said the council had contributed $200,000 to the redevelopment as part of the Get Wyndham Moving campaign.

“Wyndham is Victoria’s fastest-growing municipality, withsigni canttra ccongestion issues to address so it’s great to have state, federal and local governments come together to fund an important project like this,” Cr Fairclough said.

Mr Elsbury said the intersection’s upgrade would improve tra c ow in Wyndham while reducing the risk of crashes.

“Leakes Road operates as a major access point for Wyndham residents travelling to and from the city via the Princes Freeway and it carries about 18,000 vehicles a day,” he said.

“Palmers Road carries around 12,000 vehicles a day.”

Kevin Hillier says grassroots footy deserves its fair whack

Ilove Aussie Rules football, I have since I was running around my Laverton backyard pretending to be Ted Whitten and John Schultz.Iamfortunatetobeinvolvedatfootball at four di erent levels – Auskick, WRFL, VFL and AFL. My son has just nished his second year of Auskick and it has been a wonderful experience for him and for me. ere is a massive chasm between footy on a wintry Saturday morning at Bellbridge Auskick and grand nal day at the MCG, but both are to be savoured and enjoyed.

Football, at the top level, a ords administrators and players million-dollar salaries. But football also has room for blokes such as Peter Lloyd, who has been volunteering at Bellbridge Auskick for 10 years. Every Saturday Peter gives his time to teach the basic skills of the game. His enthusiasm and passion for the game – and his role in it – are inspirational.

A few weeks back Peter phoned me and asked if Hayden would be keen to be part of a half-time Auskick game at the MCG during

the Geelong-Melbourne match. Absolutely he would, and so would I. So a very excited bunch of boys (and fathers) got to experience what it’s like to be on the MCG on match day. Itwasfantastic, mainlythankstoPeterandthe Bellbridge co-ordinator, Tommy Fisher. is was a never-to-be-forgotten moment for all. e boys enjoyed a drink and pie or hot dog a erwards, paid for by the Bellbridge centre. e AFL used to pay for this, but it cut the budget last year. How lousy is that? ere is a lot of talk about the money that is being put back into the game, but at Auskick level I don’t see it. Nor do I see it at suburban level, where, for example, clubs no longer get a direct payment when one of their juniors is dra ed. eir leagues receive a fee, but not the clubs. ere is an inequality in football that is far too heavily weighted in favour of the elite level. Football would be nowhere without the incredible army of volunteers who make it possible for our children to participate. eir only payment is to see smiles on the faces of

Parties promise extra trains

Commuters using new Regional Rail Link stations at Tarneit and Wyndham Vale will be able to catch a train every 20 minutes during o -peak periods when the stations open next year.

Labor has announced plans to have V/Line services stop at the new stations every 20 minutes between 9am and 3pm if it wins November’s state election.

Public Transport Minister Terry Mulder has also promised to have trains running every 20 minutes from Tarneit and Wyndham Vale.

V/Line services from Geelong to Melbourne presently run via Werribee station, where they stop once an hour during o -peak times.

e promises mean that commuters will have access to 22 more train services from Monday to Friday.

e new Regional Rail Link line through Wyndham is expected to open in mid-2015.

services would bene t shi workers and students who travel to Geelong or Melbourne.

Werribee commuter Colin McIntyre welcomed the commitments, saying extra trains would bring Wyndham’s public transport system up to the same standard as other municipalities.

As reported by Star Weekly, the state’s Auditor-General found that Wyndham had one of the most indirect and infrequent public transport systems in Melbourne, with most of the city’s bus and train services failing to connect with each other.

“People all over Melbourne should have the same level of service,” Mr McIntyre said.

“Why should someone in Wyndham wait twice as long for a bus or train?

“Waiting longer for services a ects people accessing work and education.

“Increasing services is a step in the right direction, but there’s still a long way to go.”

Estate a taste of Big Apple

Another 2000 houses will be added to Wyndham, with a New York-inspired estate about to be launched in Point Cook.

Upper Point Cook – which is bound by Hacketts Road, the Princes Highway and Sneydes Road – will be declared open by Satterley Property Group, with blocks for sale, in October.

e estate will be built next to the East Werribee employment precinct.

e land for the estate was sold by the state government last year to help fund a diamond freeway interchange at Sneydes Road.

Satterley state general manager Jack Ho mann said the 2000-lot estate would be inspired by the Big Apple.

It will have small pockets reminiscent of those found in Manhattan and a Bronx-style urban plaza with basketball courts.

e estate’s street and park names will be based on parts of New York.

“ e branding of Satterley’s Upper Point Cook project is centred around another level of living,’’ Mr Ho mann said.

‘‘It’s about having the room families need to thrive and grow, and the New York theme is a fun way to create a point of di erence.’’

Once completed, the 125-hectare estate will be home to about 5000 people. It will include 13 hectares of open space and wetlands, and playgrounds, sports ovals and convenience stores.

Upper Point Cook is the third new estate announced for Wyndham since the start of July. As reported by Star Weekly, 4000 houses will be built at west Wyndham in Lend Lease’s Harpley estate.

Another 7000 houses will be built as part of the Jubilee estate bordering Ballan Road in Wyndham Vale.

e state government is also seeking expressions of interest from companies wanting to develop the rst stage of East Werribee, which will eventually provide 7000 homes. Construction of Upper Point Cook’s display village will start in July next year and is expected to be completed in 2016.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Black attack a lengthy ordeal

Regarding your article “Werribee house’s black plague” [Star Weekly, August 13]: I wish to point out that discoloration, dirty marks and staining was repeatedly recorded throughout the condition report submitted to First National Westwood on August 11, 2011.

As I had just relocated from NSW and was unfamiliar with the area, I assumed the source of the pollution was outside – speci cally motor vehicle emissions from the Princes Freeway and Duncans Road. A logical assumption, as the black substance looks like soot.

Moreover, none of First National Westwood’s staff who conducted property inspections since August 8, 2011 commented on the ever-increasing pollution in the unit. Nor did any of the tradesmen who have conducted

repairs since this date. Their apparent acceptance of it led me to believe this was a normal occurrence in my neighbourhood.

It was only a week after the property manager’s inspection on July 9 this year –and after the landlord’s attempts to clean the walls on July 12 – that I contacted Wyndham council.

More youth projects needed

What a fantastic initiative [‘‘Turning lanes into landscapes’’, Star Weekly, August 13]. This is also the perfect solution for Palmers Road in Point Cook, to stop the pointless graf ti there. There needs to be more of these kinds of projects around Wyndham to give our youth a sense of purpose, develop their skills and teach them to make a positive contribution to the community.

If more youth had a sense of purpose and achievement, there would be fewer problems in Wyndham.

Budget’s ‘perfect storm’

Wyndhamhousing, educationandemployment services gathered to voice their concerns about the federal budget last week.

Opposition nance spokesman Tony Burke was in Werribee on ursday to talk with about 20 organisations, including Wyndham council.

Mr Burke said that all the groups raised concerns about Wyndham’s unemployment rate of 8.8 per cent, 2.4 per cent above the national average.

“ e strongest thing that came from today for me was that these people are dealing with the most disadvantaged in the community … one of them described it as a perfect storm,” Mr Burke said.

“ ingsneedtogetbetter,yettheyaregetting worse in a big way.”

Health, with a particular focus on mental health, housingandjobsupportprogramswere also regarded as major issues.

Mr Burke said a national jobs plan was needed to stop Wyndham from falling further behindnationalstandardsinanumberofareas.

LalorMPJoanneRyansaidthedaywasagood opportunity for the Wyndham community to pass on a strong message to a front-bench politician.

“I’m pleased Tony was able to hear rst-hand from our local services about the budget impact,” Ms Ryan said.

“I’m certain he will recount the local impact back in Canberra when Parliament returns in a couple of weeks.

“ is budget rips out vital money needed for roads and community facilities needed in this high-growth area.”

Study prompts heart warning

Wyndham residents who smoke or are overweight are being urged to get checked by their GP, as the Heart Foundation warns that many residents may be unaware they are at high risk of heart disease.

Heart Foundation research has found that while only 15 per cent of people living in the western suburbs have been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease, many more people are at risk.

e foundation’s cardiovascular health director Kellie-Ann Jolly said the number of Wyndham residents who smoked was above the national average, while 53 per cent of the population was overweight or obese.

Heart Foundation research also shows 43 per cent of Wyndham residents don’t get enough daily exercise.

“ ere are a lot of ticking time bombs. People don’t know they’re at signi cant risk of heart disease,” Ms Jolly said.

“We are alarmed by the number of people who are walking around with these risks and not realising it.

“High blood pressure and cholesterol are silent problems. ey don’t have symptoms, so it’s important to get them checked to monitor your risk of heart disease.”

Ms Jolly said people could reduce their risk of heart disease by introducing more exercise into their daily routine and loweringtheamountofsaltandsaturated fats they consume.

‘All-in’ plan for emergencies

Community leaders in Wyndham and Melton will take part in a new project to help their municipalities build “resilience” to emergencies.

e state government has provided Wyndham and Melton councils with $91,700 fortheWesternAreasResilienceprojectaspart of its ‘Resilient Community Program’.

e funding will allow the councils to employ a manager to run the program across both municipalities.

Wyndham mayor Bob Fairclough said the $243,700 project was aimed at linking community leaders with the council’s communityleadershipprogramtohelpincrease each city’s capacity to prepare for, withstand and recover from all types of emergencies.

“Wyndham and Melton share similar risk pro les such as grass res on the urban/rural interface and both face the challenge of having growing communities,” Cr Fairclough said.

“Both are also part of the North Western Metropolitan Region Relief and Recovery Collaboration, whichinvolvescouncilsworking together to build capacity in emergency management.

“Many resources already exist in the emergency management space that will help our community respond as best they can to an adverse event – they just need to be localised and locally owned. is project will work with existing resources and networks to build resilience in our communities.”

Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Andrew Elsbury said the Western Areas Resilience project would also include community forums and emergency planning toolkits.

He said the program would involve faith-based and seniors groups, service clubs and culturally and linguistically diverse communities. e project will provide community leaders with the skills to train others in their networks.

Regional and Rural Development Minister Peter Ryan said the funding would help communities in Wyndham and Melton take an active role in emergency management.

“Our funding is helping communities fully understand local risks and improve their own capacitytotackleandrecoverfromallhazards,” he said.

“Funded projects are building community con dence to share the responsibility of handling emergencies.”

High-tech jail unit opens

Prisoners will soon move in to a new 100-bed unit at the Metropolitan Remand Centre in Truganina.

e Billingham unit – part of the rst stage of a $65 million expansion and upgrade of the maximum security remand centre – was opened by Corrections Minister Edward O’Donohue last Friday.

Mr O’Donohue said the expansion would play a critical role in managing some of the state’s most di cult o enders.

CCTV, drug and explosive detection booths, a biometric security system, under-vehicle searching, perimeter detection systems and electronic movement passes will all be used to maintain a secure environment.

“ e expansion builds on the prison’s status as one of Victoria’s most secure facilities, which uses state-of-the-art technology to ensure the safety and security of the prison,” Mr O’Donohue said.

Work on the unit started in May last year and nished earlier this month.

Constructionofasecond100-bedunit, expected to open in January, is already under way. It will increase the prison’s capacity to 1005 prisoners, making it Victoria’s second-largest jail.

Happy end to dog’s tale

Joshua Munn collapsed when he was reunited with his American bulldog, Tiny, 57 days a er the dog was stolen from his Brooklyn home.

A Brimbank council ranger responding to a lost poodle reported in St Albans last Wednesday said he recognised Tiny from a photo published in Star Weekly on June 4.

Mr Munn was summoned by the ranger to a house in Main Road, but having received many false sightings he was wary of raising his hopes.

When Tiny saw his owner, he ran straight into his arms. “I collapsed on the ground and he ran straight over to me and just licked me half to death,” Mr Munn says.

Mr Munn thanked friends Jenny McDonald and Narelle McKenzie, who set up a Facebook page, ‘Help Find Tiny Please’.

“I had over 1300 hits on that [Wednesday] night alone,” Mr Munn said.

“As soon as I put up that I found him and everybody just went berserk.’’

Mr Munn said he was also grateful for those who encouraged him when it seemed as though he’d lost his dog forever.

He said Tiny was in good health and hadn’t le his side since his return.

Mr Munn said the St Albans couple provided varying accounts of how they came to have Tiny, ranging from buying him online to nding him on the freeway.

Dog ght a false alarm for cops

Police were called to a Point Cook house last week following reports a man had beatenadogtodeathwithabroomstick.

A witness to the incident told Star Weekly that about 8.30pm on Monday, August 11, she heard what sounded like a dog being attacked by a man at a house in Campaspe Way.

But Wyndham police’s Inspector Damien Christensen said the man was actually breaking up a fight between two dogs.

“The incident involved two dogs fighting over some food,” Inspector Christensen said.

“One dog was severely bitten and the incident was reported to the RSPCA. There was no further police involvement.”

Inspector Christensen said the dogs involved were both pitbulls and the injured one was rushed to a local vet for treatment.

“The tool used to break up the dogs was an aluminium broom handle,” he said. “The action taken was probably necessary to ensure the other dog wasn’t killed.”

One witness, who did not want to be named, said he was worried about whetherthedogswouldbesafeinfuture.

“There was a whole lot of noise and you could tell one of the dogs was in a lot of pain,” the witness said.

“I don’t know if those breeds of dogs should be kept together in a house if that is how vicious they can be. Just imagine if one of them got out and attacked a local child.”

Happy, and well drilled

Wyndham SES has received new equipment, including rst aid kits and a drill, following a donation from insurance company AAMI. The unit was one of 35 across Victoria to receive new equipment as part of the SES’s annual equipment handover program. AAMI has been providing the volunteer organisation with equipment for 12 years and Wyndham SES members Timothy Smiley and Daniel Smith (pictured) said the new equipment made a difference. Mr Smiley joined the unit ve years ago because he was looking for an opportunity to help people in need, while Mr Smith has been volunteering for seven years. They encouraged other members of the community to join the unit if they wanted to challenge themselves, learn new skills and meet new people.

“I want things to be calm and peaceful and gentle, to support someone at the end of their life,” she said.

Ms Hosking raised more than $2000 in her month without alcohol, but she says she also gained something for herself out of the experience.

“I de nitely feel a lot better a er not drinking for a month,” she said.

“It was very worthwhile to do it for myself as well as for Mercy.”

Recycled water for Wyndham whining

With the West Werribee Dual Supply Scheme nearly completed, houses in parts of Wyndham Vale will soon be using recycled water.

e $127 million scheme will supply residents in the Manor Lakes, Bluestone and River Walk estates with recycled water for use in home and garden and will secure Wyndham Vale’s water supply for many years to come.

They remain in charge, they retain their independence but have the support on hand when they need it.

Why don’t you call them and see if we can make an appointment to see them.

MY WYNDHAM

Few people have done more for Hoppers Crossing than Bob Metselaar, writes Rebecca Miller

Long-time Hoppers Crossing resident Bob Metselaar remembers the days when Werribee’s population was under 18,000 and most people knew each other.

What’s your connection to the local community?

I’ve lived in Hoppers Crossing for more than 40 years and have seen ample changes, mostly progressive. From 1972 to 1992 I was a building contractor and in 1993 I changed from an antiques collector into a dealer in mostly Georgian antiques, books and art, including Aboriginal Australian art. I started community service at Apex in Hoppers Crossing in 1982. Apex started the Blue Light Disco, the biggest in Victoria, and I was involved on that committee for 11 years and also volunteered for Werribee Community Centre, the Weerama Festival, the Bicentennial Committee, Hoppers Crossing Secondary College’s school council and other committees, all of which had a great impact on my personal development, networking and fund-raising capabilities. Apex and Hoppers Crossing Rotary have helped a lot with my personal development as an active citizen. I’m proud of my community, our strength as an extraordinary group of caring volunteers and council leadership.

What would you like to change in your neighbourhood?

I’d like to see more police (and council) enforcement. e local police are too busy because they lack resources and adequate manpower. We should bring back warnings to some o enders, otherwise what’s the point of making more laws without adequate enforcement?

I’d also like to see more people under 35 become involved in their community and one of the best ways to do this is through service clubs.

Whatwouldyounotchange?

My partner Betty, my neighbours, Werribee RSL and Wyndham City Salvation Army

Corps. I’ve made many friends through community service and enjoy catching up with them unexpectedly while shopping.

Whereisyourfavouriteretreatspot?

Werribee Park gardens and Chirnside mansion. e landscape, rose garden and variety of majestic trees are a joy to the eye

and all is maintained to a high standard. It’s one of the best parks in Victoria.

What’syourfavouriteeatery?

A GOOD RIBBING

When I asked the man at South Melbourne market this week for two kilos of American-style pork ribs, he laughed and said: “We used to chuck these out.” Not so long ago they were apparently considered useless. Now – with the trend for American cuisine – ribs can be more expensive than pork llet! How times change.

But they were worth every cent. Last night, my family and I feasted on the most awesome sticky ribs. Crunchy and caramelised, nger lickin’ good doesn’t even begin to describe them. This recipe is from the latest edition of Super Food Ideas. It’s the best (and easiest) I’ve come by so far. The photo you see on this page is of the ribs I cooked. I covered them in the marinade and let them sit in the fridge all day for the avours to develop. Serve with coleslaw and you’re set for a toasty night in.

STICKY

RIBS

½ cup tomato passata

¼ cup tomato sauce

One-third of a cup brown sugar

1 garlic clove, crushed

1½ tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

2 teaspoons Dijon mustard

1.8 kilos American-style pork ribs

Preheat oven to 200 degrees celcius (180 fan-forced) and line a large roasting pan with baking paper (I used two disposable foil baking trays – no washing up required!)

Combine all the marinade ingredients in a bowl. Place ribs on tray, brush all over with marinade, cover tightly with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove foil, baste with juices from tray, turn ribs over and bake – uncovered – for another 40 minutes (I turned the ribs over again in the last 20 minutes of cooking).

Feel Young Again

‘Why didn’t we move earlier?’

Leaving the family home and moving to a retirement village is a huge decision, but residents of Point Cook Village will tell you they have no regrets.

Point Cook Village is a retirement village for active over 55’s. The village has grown to a community of 263 villas and 24 apartments since construction began in 2010. There are more than 350 people living in the village, which is in its nal stages of construction.

Retirement Communities Australia director, Andrew Philip said there were many bene ts to having a retirement village in the Wyndham community where there was a wonderful and active lifestyle that residents enjoyed.

“In a recent survey of our residents, when asked if they had any regrets about moving to our village, the overwhelming majority said that ‘not coming earlier’ was their greatest regret,” Andrew said.

“One example of the community values at Point Cook Village is the outstanding work done by a committee of residents who put their professional and life experience to work to bene t the village as it underwent accreditation recently,” Andrew said.

And the artisans committee at the village is preparing an Artisans Market as part of an open day on October 11. There will be more than 15 stalls displaying and selling art works, a café, sausage sizzle and other attractions raising money for a ‘Cuddle Cot’ at Werribee Hospital. Cuddle cots are specially designed to help

grieving parents to deal with the loss of their child.

The village offers independent living, enhanced by a range of resort-style facilities and services including a luxurious community club-house that offers indoor heated pool, spa, gymnasium, billiards, lounge, bar and pamper centre.

Consulting rooms are attended by a registered nurse who provides support to residents and visiting doctors and allied health professionals. The village also features caravan storage, a village bus and a competition-size bowling green. Walking paths make the most of the tranquil waterway that ows through the village. Villas have two bedrooms and two bathrooms, lock-up garages, a north facing alfresco area, excellent storage and nishing. Apartments have two bedrooms and ample living areas over a 10 square oor plan.

It’s clear when being greeted at the door by Lyn and her much-loved miniature schnauzer Toby, that after 12 months living at Palm Lake resort Truganina, their house really has become a home.

“I just love it here,” Lyn said. “It was one of the best things I ever did, but if I couldn’t have brought Toby with me I would never have even considered it as an option.” She said Toby had met his own “new best friends” at the off-leash dog area and enjoyed playing on the equipment provided.

Lyn is a member of the Winnebago, Campervan and Motorhome Club.

“My plan when I moved in to Palm Lake, Truganina, was to purchase a Motorhome, which I’m happy to say I now have. I can travel away now with the peace of mind knowing friendly neighbours are keeping an eye on everything for me.

“People come to the resort for different reasons. I liked the fact I don’t have to be involved in everything if I don’t want to, that choice is mine. I can be as private as I like or join in the activities,” Lyn said. “I love the Yogalates and line-dancing and I recently went on the bus trip to the markets. I look forward to Wednesday night meals as it’s a good chance to catch up.”

Palm Lake Resort Truganina provides affordable, luxury living for active, mature-age adults who are looking for a lifestyle change. The resort offers an indoor heated pool and spa, luxurious air-conditioned 60-seat cinema, nine-hole mini-golf, an-all weather undercover bowling green, darts, pool, snooker in the fully equipped Charlton Room, Zumba, bocci and aqua-robics.

When buying into a Palm Lake Resort, residents pay no entry fee or stamp duty when they move in. A low fortnightly site fee covers all council rates, garbage disposal, and unlimited use of all the facilities the resort has to offer.

Homes start from $309,000 and residents keep 100 per cent of their capital gain. Stage 3 is selling fast with some great two- and threebedroom designs to choose from.

The Paradise Palms Clubhouse offers residents a weekly roast night, including dessert, at an affordable price. There’s also one free weekly meal per household. The Bistro in the clubhouse has a lunch time menu at a low $6.

Rental assistance may be available for people who qualify through Centrelink or Veteran Affairs

Ellen De Generes once said: “My grandmother started walking ve miles a day when she was 60. She’s 97 now, and we don’t know where the heck she is.” Ellen’s grandmother may be proof that exercise is possible at all ages and stages of life.

Maribyrnong personal trainer and level 3 strengthandconditioningcoachMargarita Guterres runs a seniors’ water aerobics classandbelievestherearemanybene ts for the participants.

She has people from 60 to 85 years in the aqua classes. Classes can go from “gentle to dynamic”, depending on what the participants want.

“The class allows them to increase muscle mass and bone density while using a range of motions that keep them frombeingcouchpotatoes,”MsGuterres says.

She says participants love to be involved in exercise, but it’s not all about that.

“The classes are very social. Men and women make and meet like-minded friends, which is great, especially if they live alone. Any senior can be involved even if they’re un t; it doesn’t matter.”

Ms Guterres says mature-aged people can use the gym to their advantage. “Casual walks on the treadmill, using the bike or doing light weights are all bene cial.”

Seniors not interested in visiting a gym or going to a pool can still keep t with other gentle exercise, such as tai chi, yoga and walking. Joining in exercise with other older

people can not only make a person feel better in the short term but can have long-term health bene ts, including a lower risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, osteoporosisandcoloncancer.Exercise can also increase exibility and improve posture which, in turn, may help with balance, coordination and reducing the risk of falls. If all this talk of exercise is exhausting, why not take a nap, but keep in mind that exercise can improve sleep quality so perhaps a stroll before that rest.

EldersRealEstate: 9741 9666 Price: $410,000 Privatesale

From its cream facade with hints of burgundy to its large, bright living areas, this four-bedroom property is possibly just what a couple needs to settle down and raise a family. The location is also handy: within one kilometre of Werribee Plaza and Cambridge school so it’s a great spot to call home. There are ample living areas, including a lounge-dining room that leads to a separate family-rumpus zone and meals area. The well-appointed kitchen has a breakfast bar and plenty of storage space. Two of the bedrooms have walk-in wardrobes, while the main has an en suite and bay window. There is a sparkling main bathroom. A large pergola area caters for outdoor entertaining, and there’s a shed and water tank in the backyard. Further features are ducted heating, split-system cooling, established gardens and double garage.

HOPPERS CROSSING 3 William Wright Wynd, 3029

HarcourtsWyndhamCity: 9741 9000 Price: $295,000– $319,000 Privatesale

On a manageable block of about 530 square metres, this brick-veneer residence has a striking facade with front verandah ready for a bench to sit on and watch the world go by. It has an immaculate interior with light- lled living spaces, including a lounge room with Coonara and polished oorboards and meals area with tiled oor. The fully equipped kitchen has stainless-steel appliances, including a dishwasher, as well as tiled splashbacks and plenty of cupboard and bench space. The main bedroom is zoned for peace and privacy and has a bay window and built-in wardrobes. The other two bedrooms also have built-in wardrobes. The main bathroom has the luxury of a spa. Geared towards outdoor entertainment, the backyard has a paved area for a dining setting, as well as lawn that’s ready for a swing set or cubby house for the kids. Further features include evaporative cooling, a linen press and a shed.

In arguably one of the prime spots in a busy suburb, this house is right next to a bike path to parkland, a playground and four kilometres of walking tracks. And with wetland/reserve vistas out back, it’s the type of place, when sitting with friends on the back deck, that belies the surrounding suburban sprawl.

That’s a massive tick for location, but how does the house stack up? Solidly built by Nava Homes some years ago, it’s on a big block of about 800 square metres and is buffed to a turn, inside and out.

To the left of a tiled hall, turned balusters de ne entry to the step-down lounge room which has laminate oorboards, ceiling fan and a wet bar in a corner: that takes care of entertainment space.

The main bedroom opposite has lace curtains at a bay window, ceiling fan, walk-in robe and an en suite (with heat lamp) decked out in soft-green and cream, a colour scheme that’s adopted in many rooms.

Another bedroom, off the family room, has laminate oorboards, three-door wardrobe and access to the deck; the third (with robe) is down a tiled hall along which is a separate toilet, laundry and the main bathroom with the bath under a bulkhead.

At entry hall’s end, double doors open to the tiled living hub of kitchen, meals zone and sitting area that link with a timber deck under a pergola. The kitchen has a corner pantry, appliance cupboard, dishwasher, wall oven and 900mm gas cooktop.

Behind the remote-controlled double garage, a roller door opens to an expansive pitched-roof pergola above coloured concrete. Beauti ed with a fern garden, this is extra space for relaxation, particularly in warmer weather.

Out back, there’s a Colorbond workshop with power and water connection, a garden shed, two water tanks, a vegie garden, four fruit tree varieties and a grapevine.

A weeping cherry, roses and potato vine screen in the front garden not only provide kerb appeal but are indicative of the care taken elsewhere on the block. The property also has gas central heating, a split-system and an alarm.

Tigers need a miracle to avoid the drop

Werribee will be on a wing and a prayer going into the last two rounds of Hockey Victoria men’s Vic League 1.

e undermanned Tigers need a number of pieces in the jigsaw to fall into place or they’ll be heading for the dreaded relegation.

Fate could be sealed for the Tigers as soon as Saturday evening unless they can pull o an upset win over Brunswick on the road and get assistance from Toorak East Malvern in the form of a win over La Trobe University.

If those two results occur, it will set up a survival showdown between the Tigers and La Trobe in the nal round.

TigerscoachRyanToutadmitsanimprobable set of circumstances needs to occur for his side to avoid the drop.

“We’re a bit de ated,” Tout told Star Weekly a er last Saturday’s 6-2 loss to Geelong.

“Other results made it incredibly hard for us to stay up.

“We’ll have to try to win both games and hope things fall our way.”

e Tigers have lacked a cutting edge in attack all season.

eir only consistent threat in front of goal has been Sam Huxtable, a lethal drag icker from short-corner situations.

But the leading goalscorer will be absent from the Tigers’ frontline in the nal two rounds a er breaking his ribs a fortnight ago.

Huxtable’s absence has led to frustration for others Tigers players, who are nding their hard work going unrewarded without the recognised scorer.

“ e boys are doing a lot of hard work in the mid eldanddefence, butwe’renotcapitalising in the circle and scoring goals,” Tout said.

“[Huxtable] has two broken ribs. He fell on his stick and landed on his ribs.”

A positive to come out of the carnage is the career-best form of defender Adam Hopkins,

whohasbeenapillaronthelastlineofdefence, a springboard from the back and an important voice for his teammates.

“He’s had a stellar last part of the year,” Tout said.

“He’s really tight in defence, his tackling has improved out of sight and he’s not turning over the ball as much.

“He’s grown as the defensive leader in terms of his talking.

“It’s certainly not a role he’s played before, but I really think he’s grown into a leadership role.”

In the women’s Vic League 2, Werribee was pipped 2-1 by MHSOB on Sunday, leaving them a point out of the top four.

e Tigers will meet third-placed Casey in a do-or-diepenultimateroundblockbusteratthe Werribee Hockey Centre at 2pm on Saturday.

Werribee karate coup

Werribee Kyokushin Karate has waited 10 years for its rst national champion.

Adam Camerlengo has been in a bit more of ahurry, claimingthemantlea erlessthantwo years of full-contact competition.

A late bloomer at 28, Camerlengo won the male middleweight 5th kyu division at the Australian Kyokushin Karate national championships at Sydney University Sports and Aquatic Centre, etching his name in the Werribee dojo’s history books forever.

“Adam’s our rst national champ,” dojo operator Matthew Licastro said.

“We’ve had a couple of seconds and thirds at state and national level.

“ is is something others can build from and try to emulate.”

Camerlengo has long had an interest in martial arts, particularly through his love of mixed martial arts.

Previous irtations with boxing and kickboxing at local gyms were more of a hobby to keep t than serious competition.

Licastro said Camerlengo was a fast learner, open to criticism and will not make the same mistake twice.

It was no great shock to Licastro to see him nish second in Victorian and New South Wales state titles and then go one better at the nationals.

“I think he’s improved over the past six months to the point where he’s beating the people he was losing to earlier on,” Licastro said.

“He just got in there and everything he had been training for worked.

“He sets the pace in terms of intensity at training and rarely misses a session, but when he’s not there you can tell because the others feed o him a lot.

“He’s a good asset to have at the club, very determined and very coachable.”

Camerlengo also works as an actor, having played roles in a number of shows, including Neighbours and Winners & Losers

Licastro says the occupations of students at his club vary from actors to lawyers, but all seem to bene t from the discipline and tness required to undertake a martial art.

“With a lot of the guys, their training ows into their workplace,” Licastro said.

“His acting, which he’s very much into, is probably bene ting from his martial arts training.”

Camerlengo won rst place ahead of Ben Hoadley, Matthew Brazier and Carlos Luppi.

■ Local footy is buzzing on the back of the junior nals and this week the WRFL senior nals start. The success of Yarraville Seddon Eagles at the elite level of the junior ranks is a great foundation for the club’s future. The seniors won only one game this year, but there’s light at the end of the tunnel with three junior premierships in A-grade. Yarraville Oval is an iconic football venue and should be part of the top echelon of the local competition – a winning team playing there is needed in the comp. Jesse Smith has done a good job and I hope he continues at the club.

■ The Sunshine Kangaroos are about to go through a major overhaul. Brett Jacobs announced after the last home-and-away game that he would not coach next year because of work and family commitments. Veteran big man Tommy Millar is also hanging up the boots. I’m a big Brett Jacobs fan, but this might be a good thing for both parties. Like many others, I had the Kangaroos in my top three this year. Unfortunately, they never looked like it. On paper, a very good line-up, but for whatever reason they produced very little. Jacobs can reload his coaching career somewhere else and the Kangaroos can start afresh. A cleanout might not be a bad thing.

■ Kicking 100 goals in a season is a fabulous achievement. This year three players in the WRFL second division – Shaun Buttigieg-Clarke (Caroline Springs), Paul O’Shea (Wyndhamvale Falcons) and Damien Yze (West Footscray) – have all achieved this milestone. Coaches talk about defensive zones and shutting down players, but as fans we want to see goals scored and we want to see the local versions of Lockett, Dunstall and Richardson. Yet it’s always great to see a dour defender stop a high- ying forward kicking a bag. I have always thought that fullbacks should be afforded the same accolades as full forwards. For me the ‘Fullback of the Year’ should have the same esteem as the goalkicking award winner.

■ Werribee has a big task travelling to Frankston on Sunday. Win and they play nals; a loss brings Geelong into the picture and Werribee could miss out. Four weeks ago the Tigers were looking a red-hot chance for a top 4 spot, but three consecutive losses have changed that. This weekend will be very interesting.

Any news, let me know on email kevin@howdypartnersmedia.com.au. Follow me on Twitter @KevinHillier, plus check out the Howdy Partners Media website as well.

BULLDOGS IN FOCUS

THE

Following the arc of angst

In my rst stint as president back in the ’90s, my approach to umpires and opposition players during the course of a game was utterly shameful. ere wasnotermofabuseIwasnotpreparedtogivevoiceto, andIneverjudged a free kick to have been awarded fairly against my team.

A er I was relieved of the post in 1997, the following years enabled me to assume a zen-like calm during games. When the board of the Western Bulldogs asked me to take the job on again in late 2012, I secretly thought people would see a calm and composed Peter Gordon – even during the tensest of games. is is an approach you need to adopt when you’re meant to be hosting pollies and sponsors and people who may not take kindly to the unhinged venting of spleen.

Macca has this year introduced a team mantra of “stronger for longer”. Taking his lead, I have introduced my own personal game-day promise of “calmer like an embalmer”. It’s worked tolerably well, with some very clear learnings to be taken out of the 2014 season, including:

1. Any free kick awarded to Nick Riewoldt, no matter how obvious, will elicit dark memories of 2009.

2. Never watch a game in a corporate box with only Simon Garlick for company. Who even thought he was capable of language like that!?

3. Resist the temptation to believe there is a special interpretation given to deliberate out-of-bounds for Western Bulldogs players, COMPARED WITH EVERY OTHER TEAM IN THE FRICKIN’ LEAGUE.

4. Sorry about that last line … stronger for longer … calmer like an embalmer.

5.PutSteveWinwood’s Arc Of A Diver albumontheChristmaslistsforyesterday’s eld umpires and a certain Kangaroos forward.

THE PLAYER

Second, but best I

f you had told me at the start of the year that I’d be playing twos for most of 2014, I would have been a very disappointed young man.

Footscray was tipped to come dead last, and I was de nitely one who thought we would struggle to win in our rst year.

Anewteamwithagroupofblokeswhowouldrather be playing senior footy combining with part-time VFL footballers doesn’t sound like an environment that would evoke too much care and passion.

How wrong I was.

Historically, all AFL-owned VFL sides have nished near the bottom in their maiden years. Yet what has occurred in the Footscray Football Club in the past 20 weeks has been remarkable.

It is something I have been searching for as a player and person.

Contrary to all predictions, the sons of the west are sitting second on the ladder and on the verge of playing nals.

e camaraderie formed in such a short time is something I’ve never before experienced – and a lot of that is due to the VFL boys.

We’re really looking forward to the next ve weeks and the nals. Hopefully, we can bring some silverware to the club.

is year has exceeded all my expectations and rekindled my love of the game.

VFL or not, I have loved playing footy with a great bunch of blokes this year.

Bears prepared for rst crack at nals

enext80minutesofaction,notthelast,isall that matters for the Werribee Bears.

e Bears were outplayed 36-6 by the North West Wolves in the last game of the Victorian Rugby League rst grade regular season at AJ Davis Reserve on Saturday.

But the two sides will square o again in a cut-throat semi- nal on neutral turf at Fregon Reserve in Clayton this Saturday.

“Today didn’t mean much; it all comes down to next week’s game,” Bears coach Aaron Tiananga said.

“It was a bit of a tough one, but a lot of the boys in our rst grade were out injured and we hadtobringupquiteafewofourboysfromthe reserve grade to ll their spots.

“We get to play them again next week with our full-strength team.”

It will be a historic occasion for the Bears, featuring in the rst grade nals for the rst time in the club’s short four-year history.

e Bears’ previous greatest success came in their inaugural season, when they went on to hoist the second division premiership. is achievement goes into a whole other stratosphere.

“It’sabigthingfortheclub;it’shistoryinthe making for us,” Tiananga said.

“Back in 2009, when the club was established, our second division team won the premiership, but to have a team in the rst grade make it to the nals is a rst for us.

“We can take it to the big guns now and it’s given us a big name in the VRL.”

e Bears go into the nals riding a wave of con dence.

“If we keep playing like that I’m highly con dent we can beat the Wolves,” Tiananga said.

e Bears’ greatest strength lies in their evenness across the board. e tight-knit group has dubbed itself “the brotherhood”.

ey are also blessed with some match-winners in the form of captain James Te Whata, full-back Phillip Pese and second rower Latham Harris-Pont.

Te Whata, a foundation member of the Bears, isarespected gureattheclubforability to lead by example on the eld.

“He commands his players out there with good leadership,’’ Tiananga said, “and he’s one of the best defenders in the VRL.”

Pese is the excitement machine of the Bears on the last line.

“He’s a devastating attacker,” Tiananga said. “He dissects the defenders when retrieving the ball from the full-back position, like a little Billy Slater.”

Harris-Pont is the man Tiananga feels could tearthe nalsapartwithhisbarnstormingruns on the le side. “He’s going from strength to strength every game and in a tough semi- nal, I reckon he’ll step it up even more.”

Rayner’s in the running

Jack Rayner is considered the best medal chance of a 10-strong contingent from Western Athletics heading to the Australian cross-country championships in Western Australia this weekend.

Rayner, 18, has the tness, form and a favourable eld to give the under-20 men’s 8km event a real shake in Albany on Saturday.

“He’s a chance,” Western cross-country team manager Phil Dunstone told Star Weekly.

“He came second in the under-20s last year, so there’s a chance he can take this one out.

“His nearest rival, Jack Davies, from the Ballarat region, is out with injury. If Jack runs well, he’ll be right up there.”

Rayner brushed o the e ects of a hip injury to nish third in a quality eld in a 10km race in Launceston.

In a great sign, he has been ‘niggle’-free in training since the Tasmanian trip and is just about 100 per cent ready to make a dash at a national title.

“I reckon Jack’s back to good form,” Dunstone said. “We’re quietly con dent he can do very well.”

Western has athletes in no fewer than six events at the nationals.

ey will ood the under-18 6km event with their prized group of youngsters, including Daniel Dunstone, fresh from a win at the Albert Park 10km, Liam Cashin, Cody Shanahan and Lochlan Lyness.

“One of the strengths is they’re a group of kidswhohavealwayslikedlongerdistances,” Dunstone said.

“ ey look like they’ll win the [local crosscountry] premiership this year.”

Nathan Pearce will join Rayner in the 8km event, while Matthew Hussey will race in the under-14s’ 3km.

Claire Hodgart will be the most senior woman in the touring party, competing in the 6km under-20 race.

Georgia Muller is the youngest athlete in the team, racing in the under-12 3km, while Sophie McMinimee will run in the under-14 3km in WA.

“ ey’re all pretty solid,” Dunstone said. “I’m expecting a few top 10s.”

Hard yakka a capital idea for volleyballer

Zac Anthony is thrilled to have played a key role for Victoria in its bronze medal e ort at the Australian junior volleyball championships last month.

Anthony, who plays in the opposite/ middle positions, and the “best of the best” under-17 trans-Tasman players converged on the Australian Institute of SportinCanberrafortheintense ve-day tournament.

“It was the best experience I’ve had in volleyball,” Anthony said.

“It was a really good competition because it wasn’t just Australian teams –there were two New Zealand teams there as well.”

Victoria came undone in the seminals, losing to a strong North Island out t. e Vics came back to beat the South Island in the bronze medal game, completing a successful tournament in which they notched wins against all the Australian teams.

“We beat every Australian side really easily, but it was just the New Zealand teams that were pretty hard,” Anthony said. “It was a really high level of competition.”

Anthony trained up to 16 hours a week for the event. A strong preparation was crucial – the tournament workload had players feature in two matches a day.

“It was crazy,” Anthony said. “We had to do a lot of strength work based on our legs because it’s such a long tournament.”

But Anthony wouldn’t have had it any other way.

e up-and-comer from Tarneit wants to one day don the green and gold of Australia and follow in the footsteps of his friend Tom Hodges, who is at a California college on a volleyball scholarship. e more games against stronger opposition and in a professional environment the better for Anthony.

“I’m always looking to improve,” he says.

Anthony, who plays open age for Heidelberg in the Victorian Volleyball League, is blessed with a strong support network. On the home front, parents Darryl and Karen o er their time and attention, including clocking up the car kilometres.

Some of the best coaches in the state are on his side, too, with former German international Jesper Boyschau (Victorian Volleyball Academy), Tomas Santamaria (Heidelberg) and Scott Handley (Victorian team) teaching him the ner points of the game.

Power nish wraps up Jets’ win

Four goals to one in the nal quarter handed the Western Jets a come-from-behind win over Dandenong Stingrays in the TAC Cup on Saturday.

In what was an even game for the rst three quarters, the Jets went into the nal term at Dandenong’s Shepley Oval trailing by a point.

But with their hopes of a top-four spot on the line, they rallied.

e Jets shut the Stingrays down at one end of the ground, giving up just four scoring shots for the quarter while piling on the pressure inside their attacking 50.

It became all too much for Dandenong, with the Jets breaking down the defence and going

on to secure the victory by 11.14 (80) to 8.15 (63).

Jets coach Torin Baker was rapt with his side’s performance.

“I think it was one of our best games of the year,” he said.

“ e great thing was that we played four quarters, and we had great contributions from the whole group.

“ at was the most pleasing aspect of the day.”

e Jets were forced to work hard early in the match, both sides kicking 3.4 in the rst quarter.

en the likes of Liam Duggan and Jayden Laverde stepped up for the Jets, who kicked three goals in the second term to take an 11-point lead into the main break.

Although the Stingrays fought back to hit the front, the Jets again showed why they will be a tough prospect for whoever they meet in the nals.

Baker was impressed with the way his side stayed composed under pressure.

“ ere was a bit of a scoring end and we were fairly pleased to be level at quarter time, given there was a two- or three-goal advantage,” he said.

“I think the ball was carrying 10 to 15 metres [further] down one end.

“Wewereinstrikingdistanceatthree-quarter time and with that breeze it felt like we were in a good position.”

As well as standout games by dra hopefuls Duggan and Laverde, the Jets were also well led by Jackson Viola, who kicked three goals.

Districts’ WRFL tale gets a nals chapter

Intrigue has followed Werribee Districts every step of the way in its rst season back in Western Region Football League division 1. Districts crossed over from the Victorian Amateur Football Association in the summer. Having worked so hard to earn the respect of the amateur football community and reaching the lo y heights of the second tier of the metropolitan-wide competition, the Tigers had to prove themselves all over again on return to the local western suburbs competition.

For starters, they needed to validate the WRFL board’s decision to allow the club to bypass the second division and move straight to the top level.

e Tigers certainly ticked that box in the home-and-away rounds, becoming a permanent feature in the top ve.

e Tigers not only nished in the nal ve, they also claimed third place and an all-important double chance.

Tigers mid elder Matt Dean says the team started the year with modest expectations.

“Coming from the Ammos, we didn’t know too much about the WRFL,” he said. “I’d say we’ve exceeded everyone’s expectations, internally and externally.”

e intrigue will continue for Werribee Districts when it comes face to face with nals specialist Spotswood in the second semi- nal at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday.

e Woodsmen need no nals introduction, having featured in each of the past seven division 1 grand nals.

e Tigers are not exactly novices when it comes to September football, either, having experienced many years of nals football in the VAFA.

But a number of their youngsters are going in cold.

“Spotswood pride themselves on this [ nals football] – they’ve been doing it for many years now – but it will be the rst senior nal for a lot of our guys,” Dean said.

Picking a winner in this mouth-watering week-one nal is tricky.

e ground at Watton Street is said to suit the Tigers’ run and spread, but who can match the Woodsmen’s record on that ground in big games?

e Tigers carved up wooden spoon side Yarraville-Seddon by 122 points in the nal regular-season game on Saturday.

Andrew Panayi proved his tness with six goals. A week earlier, the forward was stretchered o with concussion a er a scary on- eld incident and was taken to a local hospital by ambulance as a precaution.

“He’s a pretty valuable member of our team, creates a lot of opportunities and is good with his forward pressure as well,” Dean said. “He’s going to be a key come Saturday.”

Co-captain Brent Morrow, who always plays an important role for the Tigers at centre-half back, faces the enormous task of negating the Woodsmen’s former AFL player Jason Cloke, while Chris Molivas looms as the X-factor in

the Tigers’ attack. He has booted 36 goals in the past seven games to be the competition’s in-form forward.

e rst semi- nal will be played between St Albans and Hoppers Crossing on Sunday.

In division 2, Parkside and Wyndhamvale will meet in the rst semi- nal on Saturday for the right to be the rst side through to the grand nal.

West Footscray and Glenorden will square o in a do-or-die battle on Sunday.

e win puts the Jets in the box seat to secure a top-four spot come nals. ey are now third on the ladder with a 9-7 record and will meet 11th-placed Gippsland Power in the nal round of the season on Saturday.

“We will place huge importance on the game,” Baker said.

“We can’t rest on what we did this week considering Gippsland are playing their last game for the year and probably treating it as their nal. We need to put in a huge e ort again.”

In other round 17 results, the Murray Bushrangers were too good for the Eastern Ranges; Sandringham edged out Gippsland; the Northern Knights smashed Bendigo by 77 points; and Geelong got over Oakleigh by one point.

NPL soccer

Werribee City has again been dragged into the National Premier League relegation mix after an unfavourable weekend of results. The Bees didn’t help their own cause, losing 1-0 to Oakleigh Cannons at Galvin Park on Sunday. The six-point buffer they enjoyed over sides in the relegation zone was slashed to three after Ballarat Red Devils upset Hume City. The Bees and Red Devils will meet at Morshead Park Stadium on Saturday in a game that could have massive implications. Hoppers Crossing dominated the second half to beat lowly Laverton Park 3-0 in State League 4, while Point Cook played out an entertaining 3-3 draw with Sebastopol.

Truganina Hornets continued their promotion push in State League 5 with a 5-3 win over Melbourne Lions in Maribyrnong.

GDFL

Werribee Centrals were overrun by a fast- nishing Belmont Lions in the Geelong and District Football League at Galvin Park on Saturday. The Centurions led by 39 points at half time, but conceded 11 of the last 15 goals to lose by a point and tumble out of the nals race. Forward Jason Butty booted ve goals for the Centurions, while Luke Phipps was named best in his last game as playing coach.

VWFL

Wyndhamvale has advanced to the Victorian Women’s Football League division 3 grand nal by the skin of its teeth after a come-from-behind eight-point win over Port Melbourne Colts in the second semi- nal at Chirnside Park on Sunday. The minor premier Falcons will meet the winner of this weekend’s preliminary nal, between the Colts and Whitehorse, in the season decider on August 30. The Falcons rode their luck in the opening week of the nals, overcoming a 21-point quarter-time de cit against the Colts to win on the back of two crucial goals to Kayla Slattery.

Both division 2 games will be played at Wootten Road Reserve in Tarneit.

In division 3, Albanvale and Braybrook will battle it out for a direct path to the grand nal on Saturday. Sanctuary Lakes and Laverton Magpies will ght for survival on Sunday.

Both division 3 games will be played at Hogans Road Reserve in Hoppers Crossing. WRFL scoreboard, page 83

GDNL Werribee Centrals have made it through the Geelong and District Netball League A-grade season without a blemish. The Centurions nished 18 from 18 in the home-and-away rounds after poleaxing Belmont Lions 68-13 at Galvin Park on Saturday. Eleanor Tubbs again led the way in attack for Centurions with 44 goals. The Centurions have the luxury of a rest in the rst week of the nals after nishing on top.

Ask the Coach

You really are just taking it one game at a time?

Yes we are. Our reality is that we win we play finals, we lose and we could miss out in both the seniors and the Development competition. I said last week on the radio that my ideal outcome was not to be going to Frankston in the last round needing a win to make it , but that is what we are faced with. There is no point looking back we will have plenty of time for that, the entire playing group and the coaches and everyone at the club knows what is required, there are no second chances. That is what is exciting about sport isn’t it, the unknown. I firmly believe we are good enough to be in the finals and good enough to make an impression when we get there. I know how hard everyone has worked and that will pay off this Sunday.

Will you do anything different?

No not really because I believe we have been preparing really well, that has not been our problem. It is the execution on match day that has cost us. A couple of missed opportunities against Port a few weeks back, our first half against Footscray, and our lapse in the third quarter last week gave Sandy the momentum to win. We all know that. We now have to make our actions speak for us. Our preparation will be pretty routine, I don’t think there is much to be gained changing things now. This is another test for all of us. I have no doubt the locals in Frankston will turn out in big numbers for the last game of the year and the drums will be going as loud as ever and they will be wanting a win to finish their year off. We would love to see a sea of black and gold there on Sunday cheering the boys on. Our supporters can be sure of one thing, we know what we have to do. This playing group is resilient, tight and determined to get the job done this week and so am I and the other coaches. Go Tigers.

Gentzen beaten, but event a hit with fans

Werribee boxer Taylah Gentzen lucked out in a split-decision loss to Queenslander Skye Nicholson at the Italian Sports Club of Werribee on Sunday.

Gentzen was aiming for payback in a return bout against bogey opponent Nicholson, who beat her in Brisbane a little more than a month ago. But di ering interpretations by the three judges consigned her to another defeat.

Trainer Darren Cowley said while Gentzen punchedharderandlandedthemoresigni cant blows, Nicholson was able to rack up the points with her unrelenting, grind-it-out style.

“A couple of judges came up to Taylah a erwards and said we scored it this way because the other girl had a higher work rate, while one of the judges had it for Taylah because she punched harder and landed the more telling blows,” Cowley said.

“ at’s sport, that’s boxing.

‘‘Taylah stuck to her task but maybe was just not quite busy enough and that’s what might have lost her the ght.”

e amateur boxing event attracted more than 300 fans to the sports club.

Fighters came from the country and interstate to get their names on the card.

Cowley had ve entrants from his local stablewhohewasdelightedtoshowo totheir supporters.

“It’s a massive boost for us to ght in our home town,” Cowley said.

One of the biggest results for the local contingent was Parek Wol’s upset of Victorian No.2 middleweight Roger Grant.

Wol claimed an emotional points decision victory, dedicating it to his nephew who died recently.

“Hetooksometimeo andonlytrainedtwo weeks for this ght, which was evident in his lack of lung power at the end,” Cowley said.

“But he put enough points in the bank in the rst two rounds to hold on.”

Michael Labrador showed his strength of mind, despite losing in one of the ghts of the day.

Labrador, a former US marine, produced what Cowley described as a “super-human e ort” to survive into the third round a er hyperextending his elbow in the rst round.

“I was begging him not to go out for the third round … he went out and the ref noticed he was carrying his le arm and stopped the ght,” Cowley said.

“He injured that arm in the rst round so he carried it through one entire round and the bulk of the rst round as well – an immense amount of courage.”

Colin Norris had his opponent begging for mercy a er two rounds in a technical knockout win, while Kole Karavias lost a closely fought heavyweight bout to Nathan McLean, who was named ghter of the day.

Next event on the Boxing Victoria calendar is at the Reggio Calabria Club in Parkville on August 31, one of three lead-up events to November’s state titles.

Nervous wait for Tigers

How relaxed Werribee Tigers coach John Lamont and his players will be this weekend is going to be dictated by the result of the Geelong-Essendon VFL clash on Friday night. If Essendon manages to cause an upset, Lamont and company will be comfortable in the knowledge they will be a part of the nals this season. But if Geelong holds true to form, itwillmakeforanextremelynervous48hours.

e Tigers would then have the unenviable task of travelling to Frankston on Sunday, needing a win to secure a nals berth.

at has banana peel written all over it for a side which has endured its share of hiccups in recent weeks.

e two-faced Tigers went down to Sandringham by 20 points at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday.

A third home loss in a row has le the Tigers shaky in eighth spot on the ladder and

in danger of missing the nals. But when the Tigers are up and about, their best football can leave opposition teams for dead.

ey showed glimpses of it in the second quarter against the Zebras when they were more ferocious at the contest, transferring the ball quicker to the forwards and cutting down on congestion.

It was only eeting because the inconsistent Tigers went away from the brand of football that helped them construct a nine-point lead at the game’s mid-point.

It was one-way tra c the Zebras’ way for most of the second half, barring a three-goal burst from the Tigers in the nal term that made it an interesting nish.

But Trent Dennis-Lane had already in icted the knock-out blows, feasting on Werribee’s defensive breakdowns that o ered him plenty of space to run into open goals.

e crumbing forward nished with four goals, all in the second half.

Tireless ruckman Daniel Currie was the standout for the Tigers.

e big man not only took care of his ruck responsibilities, but o ered plenty of get-up-and-go at ground level. He also pushed forward to be a marking option, nishing with two goals.

Jamie Macmillan was a welcome addition to the Tigers’ line-up, returning to football a er a long injury lay-o with a fractured bula. Macmillan worked hard to get into defensive position to detonate the Zebras’ forward thrusts and o ered plenty of rebound out of the defensive 50.

Ben Warren was the Tigers’ leading goalkicker with three, while Tim McGenniss and Mason Wood kicked two each.

Reigning best-and-fairest Jarred Moore has been handed sole captaincy of the Tigers for the remainder of the season a er the club used an 11-man leadership group for the rst 18 rounds.
