Wanted: road for overload

EXCLUSIVE

Pressure is mounting on VicRoads to immediately upgrade Ballan Road following the announcement that another 20,000 people will soon call Wyndham home.

Seven-thousand homes are to be built as part of the Jubilee estate, which will border Ballan Road in Wyndham Vale. Building of the 482-hectare estate is expected to be completed in the next 15 to 20 years.

As revealed by Star Weekly earlier this month, the state government has announced approval of the Westbrook precinct structure plan (PSP) as part of the $533 million Wyndham West Development Contribution Plan.

Jubilee will be one of the estates making up the Westbrook PSP, which will, inturn, havefiveseparate“villages” creating smaller neighbourhood areas. e plans for Westbrook show that Ballan Road will be widened to six lanes, but it could be later than 2025 before the roadworks are completed.

Greg Byrne, of the Fix Ballan Road campaign, said action needed to be taken immediately.

“I’ve lived in Wyndham Vale since 1975 and, apart from a few traffic lights, Ballan Road has never been widened to cope with the extra traffic,” Mr Byrne said.

“How there hasn’t been someone killed there already is amazing. ere is an accident between Bolton Road and Kinglake Drive every day.”

Mr Byrne urged VicRoads, which is responsible for Ballan Road, to duplicate the road before 2025.

“More homes are just going to

overload the road even more,” he said.

“It’s just not going to cope with this extra traffic.”

Wyndham sustainable development director Dean Rochfort said the council had concerns about inadequate local and state infrastructure.

“ is was further highlighted by the recent Auditor-General’s report that signalled an $870 million-$1.3 billion backlog of infrastructure for Wyndham alone,” Mr Rochfort said.

Peter Bozzo, the managing director of estate developer Lotus Living, said the projectwouldbecreatedinaresponsible way.

“It is no secret that the current infrastructure supporting the City of Wyndham is at capacity, which is why we are working to deliver a number of key facilities in the early stages of the project,” Mr Bozzo said.

Jubilee will include a 3.5-hectare government primary school, a nine-hectare private primary and secondary school, a childcare centre, 32.5-hectare employment precinct and a 6.62-hectare town centre with a supermarket, restaurant precinct and 8000 square metres of retail space.

“We have designed Jubilee with the intention of it becoming a suburb in its own right, with all the facilities, amenity and services residents need on an every-day basis, all located within their own neighbourhood,” Mr Bozzo said.

Jubilee is the latest in a long list of new estates that have recently been announced for Wyndham.

ey include East Werribee, which will include 7000 homes, Upper Point Cook, with 2000 homes, and Lend Lease’s Harpley in west Wyndham, with 4000 homes.

‘No risk’ to police numbers

Wyndham will not lose a chunk of its policeforce to a suburb of Geelong, the area’s top cop has declared.

Inspector Damien Christensen has denied reports that a large number of officers will be transferred from Wyndham when a 24-hour police station opens in Waurn Ponds. “ is issue was highlighted in 2013 as a potential risk and, as such, the risk has been managed by Victoria Police,” Inspector Christensen said.

“Two Wyndham members will transfer to Geelong when the Waurn Ponds police station opens and they will be immediately replaced.

“Memberstransferonaregularbasisthrough promotion or lifestyle needs. is is business as usual for our work area. No risk to local policing will occur.”

Wyndham council has come out in support of a potential campaign for more police in Wyndham as an alternative to installing CCTV cameras in the Werribee CBD.

Inspector Christensen said Wyndham was well serviced by its current members.

“In the month of August, we will have 20 additional police members per day over a two-week period, plus booze buses and highway patrol units, all working in this area,” he said.

“ is is a common occurrence and assists with our local policing needs.

“Over the past two years crime in many categories has been reduced and we work hard to maintain that trend.”

Inspector Christensen reiterated his claim that the issue of installing CCTV cameras in the CBD should be put to bed.

Brain surgery has Buddy feline fine

A cat with a tumor that had overtaken 70 per cent of its brain has had life-saving surgery in Werribee.

Veterinary neurologist Sam Long, of the Melbourne University Vet Hospital, led a team of three surgeons which spent four hours removing the massive tumor.

Buddy the cat was flown to Melbourne from Perth for the emergency surgery on July 22.

Dr Long said the 14-year-old cat would have died within two months if the benign tumor had not been removed.

“He was suffering from what we call compulsive walking, so he was constantly walking around in circles,” Dr Long said. Buddy had also lost vision in one of his eyes and was unable to meow.

‘‘ The tumor was … taking up around 70 per cent of his brain ’’ - Dr Sam Long

“ e tumor was about three centimetres by three centimetres and was taking up around 70 per cent of his brain,” Dr Long said.

“ is is certainly the largest tumor we’ve ever removed and possibly the largest one we’ve ever seen.”

Dr Long and his team removed the top of Buddy’s skull before extracting the tumor, which was attached to a major vein.

“We said it was a risky surgery before we started. I thought we had a 50 per cent chance of Buddy surviving,’’ he said.

“It either could have gone very well or he could potentially not have woken up.”

But Buddy started to walk in straight lines the very next day, and vision is returning to his eye. He’s even started meowing again.

Dr Long said the top of Buddy’s skull had been replaced with bone cement. He estimated the cat would live happily for another three to four years.

“ ere is no demand for CCTV cameras to be installed in Watton Street, Werribee,” he said.

Wyndham council has come out in support of a potential campaign for more police in WyndhamasanalternativetoinstallingCCTV cameras in the Werribee CBD.

“To put CCTV footage [in the CBD] would require some significant changes to the landscape as the deciduous trees would need to be pruned or removed to allow for coverage to be affective,” Inspector Christensen said. “ is issue should be closed.”

Helicopter landing probe

An investigation has been launched into an incident at Werribee Park where a helicopter landed close to an equestrian event.

A number of horses were spooked and some bolted and had to be caught.

Star Weekly was told the helicopter was dropping off a politician for lunch at Werribee Mansion. However the identity of the passenger on board remained unknown at the time Star Weekly went to press. Local MPs have said they were unaware of any politician being flown in. e helicopter landed in a field next to a fund-raising event held by the Melbourne International Horse Trials organisation at the National Equestrian Centre on Sunday, July 20.

e equestrian centre’s chief executive, Greg Pratt, said competitors were in danger when several horses were startled by the helicopter about midday.

“You have a helicopter landing no more than 50 metres from where horses are moving around in a competition area,” Mr Pratt said.

“A horse could have easily injured someone. Someone could have been trampled or worse.

“A number of horses escaped from the area. ey were all caught quickly, but there was an issue of competitors having to find their horses amid the confusion.”

A er the disturbance, it is believed the passenger abandoned the lunch and was flown to Point Cook instead.

Civil Aviation Safety Authority spokesman Peter Gibson confirmed CASA was investigating.

Gifts of clothing, cash lighten patients’ load

Patients at Werribee Mercy Hospital’s mental health unit will have new clothes to choose from a er Wyndham Rotary donated nine boxes of garments.

e boxes, whose contents included pants, shirts, jumpers, socks and underwear, were handed to the hospital earlier this month.

Rotary member Sue Selleck said the club had worked with the Wyndham Salvation Army and Footscray West’s Donation in Kind to source the clothes.

ey will be given to patients as they are discharged from the unit.

Ms Selleck said the donation was just one of the ways the club was trying to help make life easier for the hospital’s patients.

She said Wyndham Rotary already

provided the hospital with going-home packs for patients, including artworks and financial donations, and had helped maintain the hospital gardens.

“It’s our hospital. We need to do everything we can to help,” Ms Selleck said.

“We want the community to know about the wonderful work that is done at the hospital because I wouldn’t have had a clue if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes.”

Mercy Mental Health social worker

Daniela Veliz said the patients were thrilled.

“Just having the support from the Rotary Club is essential because every little bit helps,” she said.

Cash dries up as violence soars

ousands of family violence victims in Melbourne’s west could be stuck in lifethreatening situations because promised funding has not been delivered, according to the key service provider.

Women’s Health West (WHW), which handles almost all family violence incidents in the west, has seen direct reports soar 54 per cent in the past year, while funding increased by only 2 per cent.

With6209familyviolencereportsinthe past

financial year, chief executive Robyn Gregory said her team was struggling to keep up.

“ is is the most severe spike in demand we’ve seen in the 20 years that we’ve provided family violence services in the western region,”

Dr Gregory said. “Family violence services desperately need additional funds to keep women and children safe.”

Dr Gregory said WHW had not received any of the $30 million promised by Premier Denis Napthine earlier this year. “ e sector welcomed the May announcement of $30 million in new funding to protect women

and children experiencing family violence. is was to be rolled out in June,” she said.

“Despite29familyviolencedeathsinVictoria last year, including the devastating murder of Fiona Warzywoda in Sunshine in April, not oneagencyhasreceivedthepromisedfunding.”

WHW receives joint funding from the federal and state governments, but it is the state government’s responsibility to allocate it.

A spokeswoman for Victoria’s Minister for Community Services, Mary Wooldridge, said $100 million each year was being invested by the state government “to change community

attitudes”. She said the $30 million in promised funding was subject to a collaborative design process at the request of the sector, and work was still being done to find out which areas needed the most funding.

Dr Gregory said: “It’s time to move family violence up the budget priority list and release the pledged funds.”

Reforms to hurt families in need

ousands of school children in Wyndham could miss out on camps and excursions if the state government proceeds with plans to pay an education maintenance allowance (EMA) directly to schools.

Under a reform agreement between the state and federal governments, the payment would be paid directly to schools from January next year, instead of being distributed to families.

e EMA provides low-income families who have children in prep with $200 to cover school expenses, while families get $150 for each child in grades 1-6.

Parents of year 7 students receive $300 and those with children in year 8 are paid $250.

e Victorian Council of Social Service said the changes would affect 200,000 children across Victoria, including more than 35,000 in the western metropolitan region.

e organisation said many of the families affected live in growth areas, such as Wyndham, whererequestsforfinancialhelpto cover school costs were already skyrocketing.

VCOSS has partnered with other support agencies, parents and schools groups to form the Education Equity Coalition, which is calling on the government to scrap the plans.

VCOSS chief executive Emma King said many students from low-income families would be unable to genuinely participate in school.

She said families traditionally signed over the allowance to schools to pay for book lists, uniforms, camps and excursions.

“Life is hard enough already for these families. e EMA makes life easier,’’ Ms King said.

‘‘It gives people dignity. ey know that they can go to get their book list at the start of the year and it is paid for.

‘‘ Life is hard enough already for these families ’’
- Emma King

“[Underthechanges]thereisnocommitment that there will be targeted support for children who are currently getting the EMA. If it goes to schools, there is no guarantee where it will be spent.”

Ms King said some schools had raised fears about the changes, saying they didn’t want to see children getting le behind.

e equity coalition predicts the changes would increase pressure on welfare organisations, with groups such as Anglicare expecting a massive spike in requests for help.

“We need both major parties to commit to reinstating the EMA in some shape or form,’’ Ms King said.

‘‘We need to keep the targeted support for the families who need it.”

e Education Department said no child would be worse off under the changes.

It said funding would be increased and delivered directly to schools, to provide those with the most vulnerable students the funding they need.

Ball design kicks goals

College students are helping

Year 10 student Samantha Wainwright designedalogothatwasprintedonthefootballs used during last weekend’s multicultural round.

e logo, which was designed as part of a schools competition, features two hands and the words, “one team, one goal”.

Classmate Joshua Guzzardi was the competition’s runner-up.

e students entered the competition a er theirvisualcommunicationanddesignteacher, Silvio Mannello, asked his year 10 class to come up with designs.

Samantha said she found it hard to believe that footballers would be playing with a ball bearing her logo.

“I was very happy when I found out, but it was hard to believe I’d won,” she said.

Joshua said he and Samantha had spent a few weeks planning their designs, drawing up different options and touching up their chosen logos by using computers.

Samantha then spent several hours working with a graphic designer to simplify her design a er it was chosen as the winner.

“ at was a great experience,” she said. “I want to work in that field.”

To reward Samantha and Joshua’s success, the Werribee school received 10 footballs, $5000 for first prize, $1000 for second prize and 50 tickets to last Sunday’s match between Collingwood and Adelaide.

Housing wait endless for some

SomeofWyndham’smostvulnerableresidents are waiting up to five years for public housing despite being placed on a high-priority list, according to welfare agency Werribee Support and Housing.

e organisation’s chief executive, Carol Muir, said people considered to be in a crisis and facing complex issues were waiting between two and five years to secure a public housing property.

ose on the general waiting list are being advised they may never get an offer.

e revelations come a er the Human Services Department revealed that the number of people on its Footscray office waiting list decreased by three between March and June this year.

e office handles public housing requests from Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong.

Department figures show there were 1122 people on the waiting list in March, with 212 waiting to be transferred to other properties.

In June, there were 1119 people on the waiting list, with 221 people waiting for a transfer.

Wyndham’s big switch

A light bulb moment for Wyndham council could save residents $20 million.

e council’s Lighting e West project will replace old-fashioned street lights with new ones using Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology.

Wyndham Vale, Werribee and Hoppers Crossing will be the first suburbs to experience the new lights, which will replace inefficient mercury-vapour lights.

It is expected that 6300 street lights will be upgraded to LED technology in the next 12 months.

Mayor Bob Fairclough said that simply by changing the street lights, Wyndham’s future could be a lot brighter.

“ ere are many cost-saving, environmental and public safety benefits to a project like this,” he said.

“ e project will save Wyndham more

than $20 million over the next 20 years through reduced street lighting electricity and maintenance costs.

“LEDs are more robust as they consist of a panel of diode lights, meaning the entire panel is less likely to fail.

“ ereisalsolessdepreciationoflightoutput over time.”

Cr Peter Gibbons said the initiative ticked the environmental box.

“We’re estimating up to a 77 per cent reduction in energy use per light,” Cr Gibbons said. “It’s also low-toxic as the new lights don’t contain mercury.”

e project was funded by a $2.47 million grant from the federal government.

It is hoped that eventually every street light in Wyndham will be an LED.

A department spokeswoman said while the waiting list had decreased by three people, many more might have found public housing in the June quarter.

Ms Muir said most Werribee Support and Housing clients who were on the public housing waiting list had moved into private rental properties, which were consuming large portions of their income or Centrelink benefits.

“It is their only real option,’’ she said. ‘‘We are hearing of people who are using 50 to 80 per cent of their benefits to pay for private rentals.

‘‘In our crisis program, we have come across people who are living without water, gas and electricity. Once a week we come across people living in these conditions.

‘‘Many people waiting for public housing are prepared to make tough choices to put a roof over their heads because they need to have somewhere safe and secure to live.”

e department’s spokeswoman said help was offered to people who wanted to rent privately. “Crisis and emergency accommodation options are also available for those who are escaping family violence or at risk of homelessness.”

Your quick action in ringing the Wyndham council ranger had Jasper back home with us within an hour.

Dear Resident,

Our local community has a growing and energetic sporting culture. This has been highlighted over the past month with successful local events such as the Werribee Football Club 50th Birthday Dinner, the Wyndham Jags 2014 Premier League, and a number of athletes from the western suburbs competing at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

On July 30th I will be hosting my inaugural Sports Presidents evening at the Werribee Football Club.

As a netball coach and through the various sporting activities of my sons, I know it is important to recognise the vital work by so many volunteers, to make our local sporting clubs the success they are.

From serving on the committee, to arranging rosters, maintaining our sporting facilities, running club fundraisers, collecting fees and ensuring sporting equipment and uniforms are in tip top condition, our local clubs are so well served by many volunteers.

The evening is an opportunity for local clubs to hear from Justin Madden, former AFL great and former Minister for Sport and the Commonwealth Games about the enormous value of sport and participation.

I also urge sporting clubs to think about making a nomination for my annual volunteer awards. Members of the public can contact my office for details.

During the evening I will also present the latest Local Sporting Champions recipients, a special award to recognise and assist for young athletes to achieve.

Lalor was represented well with the 15 successful local athletes coming from a range of suburbs and across a range of sporting backgrounds such as Volleyball, BMX, Baseball, Basketball, Cricket, Ten Pin Bowling and Swimming.

We wish these young athletes all the best in their various competitions and know they will be great representatives of our local area. Further details about the Local Sporting Champions program can be found at www.ausport.gov.au.

I plan to make the local Sports President night an annual feature, if your club would like to be involved in the future please pass on your contact details to my office.

Yours sincerely,

Wyndham bridge a grade above

e final grade separation of the Regional Rail Link has been completed, providing motorists with a safe road over the rail line at Wyndham Vale.

e Black Forest Road Bridge over the rail line is the last of 12 grade separations between Deer Park and Werribee’s west, bringing to an end a two-year program.

Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Andrew Elsbury said the grade separations would provide better road connections for local

residents. “ e construction of road over rail bridges ensures trains and road traffic are safely separated and motorists won’t have to wait for passing trains,” he said.

Public Transport Minister Terry Mulder said completion of the Black Forest Road Bridge would ease congestion on surrounding roads.

“ e grade separations across the western suburbs mean Melbourne’s first new major rail line in 80 years will not create a single level crossing,” he said.

Mr Mulder said the $4.1 billion project, which connects Wyndham Vale and Tarneit

to the rail network for the first time, was running ahead of schedule and under budget.

e project is expected to be finished early next year, instead of in 2016.

New train stations at Wyndham Vale and Tarneit are scheduled to be completed this year.

Public Transport Victoria said train services would start progressively in 2015 on the Regional Rail Link line, including Wyndham Vale and Tarneit, following commissioning works, driver training and the progressive delivery of regional rolling stock.

Victoria’s paramedics are highly skilled professionals who dedicate their lives to serving the community and helping out in tough times.

Ambulance Victoria and Victorian Government representatives have been negotiating with the ambulance union over a new pay deal for paramedics since August 2012.

To break the deadlock, the Victorian Government has agreed with Ambulance Victoria to make a new pay offer to paramedics.

This new offer is fair and reasonable. It includes:

• a sign-on payment of $3000 for full-time paramedics (pro rata for part-timers and new employees) – this is twice as much as the previous offer

• an immediate 6% wage increase

• an increase of 3% in July 2015 and a further 3% in July 2016 – a 12% increase in total

Paramedics may also receive pay increases arising from the Fair Work Commission’s arbitration of their work value claim.

Paramedics existing terms and conditions will be retained, so that they continue to receive:

• 10 weeks paid leave annually

• 10 weeks paid parental leave

• 6 months long service leave after 15 years service

• tax exempt benefits of up to $9000 a year.

Victorian paramedics will still be the only paramedics in Australia to have access to guaranteed superannuation benefits via a defined benefit superannuation scheme, including a lump-sum option after 30 years of service.

These increases will mean an ALS Year 6 paramedic can receive a total package of more than $110,000 a year (including rolled-in-rate, built-in overtime, FBT exempt benefits and guaranteed superannuation benefits – but not additional overtime). In addition, paramedics will receive the $3,000 sign-on payment.

The Victorian Government is continuing to invest in ambulance services, with funding provided for an additional 539 full-time equivalent ambulance officers.

This new pay offer gives paramedics the salary increase they deserve, maintains the generous terms and conditions they enjoy today and recognises the importance of the job they do protecting and saving lives.

Full ight ght for life

A Werribee father of three with a passion for living life to the fullest is ghting for his own survival.

Ian “Chalky” omas worked as an adventure trainer with the Australian Air Force for 36 years until a debilitating disease forced him to retire last month.

His job required him to push air force recruits to their physical and emotional limits.

In November last year his own limits were tested when he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease a er three months of medical tests.

Six weeks ago he lost the ability to walk.

“All I had was a weakness in my le ngers, and having always been right-handed it didn’t even bother me at rst,” Sergeant omas said.

“Initially when I was told it was motor neurone disease I was, of course, in disbelief. I was hoping for something else because a lot of other diseases have better prognoses than this.

“ en I just felt acceptance that this is what I’ve got and it’s no good whingeing about it.”

Sergeant omas once installed a rock-climbing wall in his own home but now relies on his wife Carolyne to feed him.

But his disease is not hampering his adventurous spirit and optimism.

Using o -the-shelf components, he has created a battery-assisted four-wheel bike that allows him to remain active.

e bike has a tube that Sergeant omas blows in to apply the brakes and he is working on installing power steering that will react to his head movements.

His attitude through his ordeal has inspired his friends and family to keep things in

“Why would I be sad about the things I can’t do any more? I can only be thankful for the

things I have done and the things I can still do now. All my life I’ve been trying to get people over their personal cli edge.

“Now I’m at my own cli edge and I just hope I’m courageous as I go over it.”

Guitarist, keyboard player and vocalist Peter Farnan promises a blast when his Boom Crash Opera, with other legendary Aussie bands, takes to a Werribee Park stage later this year.

‘Opera’ is one of six Australian rock acts performing at this year’s One Electric Day festival on November 9.

e festival was organised a er tickets to last year’s show sold out months in advance.

Joining Boom Crash Opera will be the Hoodoo Gurus, James Reyne, Mondo Rock, Diesel and Daryl Braithwaite. Farnan said festivals such as One Electric Day had been a

long time coming and were a great opportunity for “heritage’’ rock acts to continue playing live shows, putting aside their competitive differences. “Our band doesn’t have anything to prove as far as beating the other bands, but we still have something to prove to ourselves.

“We love playing to a big audience. Our music suits these big gatherings.”

Tickets, at $89.90, are available from Ticketmaster. For more details go to www. oneelectricday.com.au.

Xtreme fame for comic

Bloody battles and science fiction have taken a Tarneit comic book creator to the top.

Shaun Paulet created the Xtreme Champion Tournament comic book series about five months ago through crowd-funding website Kickstarter.

Since then he’s been travelling around Australia and the world to spruik his unique series.

Lastweekitwasannouncedthata erthesale of 500 copies, Xtreme Champion Tournament

had become the number one independent comic book series in Australia.

Paulet said he was shocked at how quickly his creation had taken off.

“It’s been crazy, really,” Paulet said. “It still shocks me when people come up to me at conventions and want me to sign their comic book.”

Xtreme Champion Tournament follows a scientist who discovers the remains of ancient warriorsandattemptstobringthembacktolife so they can compete in gladiator-style battles. More details: www.xct.com.au

Providing care that prepares

Will your child be among the first Kool Kidz in the west?

An early childhood service that’s coming to Tarneit will introduce a new way of learning.

The west’s first Kool Kidz centre, on Tarneit Road, will open later this year, with 130 places for local children.

Owner Sam Johnson (pictured) has spent many years working with and caring for young people.

“We will offer a nurturing and loving

long-day-care service for children aged eight weeks to six years old,’’ Johnson says.

‘‘Kool Kidz will have seven learning spaces at the facility, catering to all the different development stages of all children.”

Sam, a teacher for more than 12 years, has plenty of experience with primary and secondary students. She is also a mother to two children who have been in childcare for more than six years.

The Tarneit centre will have fingerprint scanners to ensure security at all times, a dining room.

Kool Kidz provides more educators than industry standard offering more effective supervision and greater educational opportunities for children.

“We’ll be teaching the kids to be technologically savvy,” Johnson says.

‘‘The use of iPads and smartboards will be embredded in our educational programming to ensure children are

school-ready and 21st century learners. “There will also be unique interactive outdoor play equipment that supports learning through play.”

Kool Kidz has three services in Docklands and two in Rowville.

Kool Kidz Tarneit, 642 Tarneit Road, Tarneit (next to Good News Lutheran College), open 6.30am-6.30pm, Monday-Friday. Inquiries: 0407 168 018 or www.koolkidzchildcare.com.au

HOPPERS CROSSING 61 Deloraine Drive, 3029 322

On about 770 square metres in an convenient pocket of Hoppers Crossing, this striking architecturally designed residence makes a bold statement. It includes an immaculately presented interior with cathedral ceilings in the open-plan living areas where there’s a built-in bar. There’s a lovely dining room, spacious lounge room and separate theatre room, all with timber floorboards. The kitchen has a timber breakfast bar, stainless-steel appliances and ample cupboard and bench space. The three bedrooms include the main bedroom with spa en suite and walk-in wardrobe. Upstairs, there’s an open study, which also makes a great extra living space. From the meals-family zone, bifold doors open to a large pergola above stone paving and a timber deck with barbecue on mains gas. A split-system, alarm, slab heating and remote-controlled double garage with internal access are further perks.

Hocking

The juggling act of keeping the good bits of an early ’60s build and blending them with smart updates provides double pleasure and with this one it’s mission accomplished.

Kitchen and bathroom sing from today’s song sheet while Tassy oak oorboards throughout and decorative cornices and oor vents are retained as early hit parade scores.

The house has an almost hipster vibe, a mix of cosy homeyness and edgy design rst displayed in a wide entry hall where snazzy charcoal-and-white oral-print wallpaper kicks off a pleasing journey. Next, there’s a wide entry into an L-shaped lounge-dining room with timber

blinds (on all windows) and a replace with stacked-stone surround and timber mantelpiece.

The adjoining skylit kitchen is a stylish affair, with glorious American cherry cabinetry, charcoal granite benchtops, opaque-glass overheads, wine rack, wide fridge recess, green glass splashback, two pull-out pantries, dishwasher and 900mm underbench oven and gas cooktop.

The entry hall ducks left to three bedrooms each with curtained built-in robes, a make-do that’s easily xed. The nearby bathroom is a treat, all shiny and new. It has an oval spa, a chocolate-toned timber-veneer vanity unit with raised circular basin, and subway-laid white tiles.

The backyard is big enough to focus imagination on future plans, but it already has expansive concrete paving under sails as a place to gather around a summer barbie, lots of lawn for kids’ games and pretty garden beds around the perimeter. A roller door behind the carport opens to a workshop, and an old shed down back is handy for storage.

Bound to tempt young couples, families and retirees, the house on about 671 square metres is around the corner from St Andrews Catholic Primary School, close to a recreation centre and a saunter away from Werribee river.

Star Weekly photographer Damjan Janevski meets some of the special deliveries at Werribee Mercy Hospital

One-day-old Nevaeh is the daughter of Pearl and Paul, of Lara.
Two-day-old Heath James Morel, son of Troy and Claire Morel, of Hoppers Crossing.
The yet-to-be-named two-day-old son of Lorraine and Stuart Percival, of Point Cook.

Ladies in focus

There’ll be a touch of class and a few surprises when Werribee Football Club’s Women’s Circle presents High Tea at Tiffany’s from 11.30am on Sunday.

This annual event is sponsored by Fifth Element Day Spa, CS Consulting and Werribee Party Hire. The ladies-only event features a decadent high tea, with champagne on arrival, gifts and prizes. Raffle prizes include a $500 Tiffany voucher, a Nespresso machine and LG goods. There’ll be massages, manicures and tarot readings. Oh, and there’ll be a football match between the Tigers and Port Melbourne starting at 2pm. Werribee Football Club community development manager Chris Gallagher and his team have been busy in the City of Wyndham lately. The club hosted a school holiday Superclinic with the assistance of the North Melbourne Football Club. Auskickers and students from schools in Wyndham were coached in the skills of the game at Avalon Airport Oval.

Also recently, Gavin Brown, North Melbourne’s development coach, held a coaching session with local coaches to give an insight into what happens at the elite level. Werribee Football Club continues its weekly school programs and is preparing for Multicultural Day activities for the home game against Footscray Bulldogs on Sunday, August 10.

The club congratulates recent Hall of Fame inductee James Podsiadly on his 100th AFL game. James achieved the milestone playing for Adelaide against Collingwood last weekend. He’s not only a Hall of Fame inductee but also a life member of Werribee Football Club, a past captain and a double winner of the club’s best-and-fairest award. James also played 109 games in Tigers’ colours.

The underdog that bites

It’s the sort of script usually reserved for Hollywood movies ... a true underdog rises from the ranks and goes on to win a premiership.

While the second part may not have happened yet, for a batch of the Western RegionFootballLeague’smosttalentedplayers, the dream may be about to become a reality. istimelastyearthedetailsofastand-alone Western Bulldogs VFL team, to be known as Footscray, were just starting to emerge.

While Albion’s Todd Finco and Spotswood’s Michael Fogarty could have been pencilled in for brilliant seasons with their respective local sides, they were two of four WRFL players to puttheirhandsupforthechallengeandventure down to Whitten Oval for pre-season training. ey were joined by Spotswood’s Christian Elliott and Port Melbourne’s Jase Perkins. FortheBulldogs, toutedearlyonasapossible struggler in the competition, the decision to take a chance on a start-up VFL side could be about to yield the ultimate reward.

A er a slow start, the Dogs have won eight of their last nine matches and now sit in outright second spot on the VFL ladder.

Signing with Footscray was Fogarty’s second foray into the VFL a er previously playing with Williamstown, and he couldn’t be happier with his decision.

‘‘ It would be great to play for Footscray in the finals ’’ - Michael Fogarty

“I had a bit to do with ‘Mapes’ [Footscray senior coach Chris Maple] when he was at Williamstown,” Fogarty said.

“He gave me a call during the pre-season and said maybe I should go down and give it a shot. I was a bit iffy at first with the stand-alone club wondering if there would be opportunities, but I think it’s the best thing I’ve done all year.”

Despite the obvious jump in class from WRFL to the VFL, both Finco and Fogarty have more than held their own.

Fogarty has become a near-regular for Footscray, having lined up for the club on eight occasions.

Finco, playing as a crumbing forward, has played six games and booted seven goals.

PerkinshasplayedsixgamesandElliottfour.

Unlike in their local leagues, where the quartet are matched against players who have either stepped down or been delisted from the AFL, they are now coming up against players on top of their games at VFL level.

Finco said he had enjoyed the challenge.

“Lining up on some of those [AFL-listed] guys is daunting, but I do look forward to it,” he said. “It’s a good challenge.

“ e game is a lot quicker. e tactics and everything ... it’s a lot different from local football, that’s for sure.”

While they may have found the challenge tough, Maple has been impressed with the way his players have gone about it.

“Early on it was probably a little daunting for them, but now they feel part of the club,” he said.

“I remember Michael Fogarty going to [Carlton’s] Brock McLean [against Northern Blues] for example. He just took on the challenge and did a fantastic job.

“I don’t think the boys worry too much about who we’re playing. ey just play how we want them to play and whoever comes to them comes to them.”

While WRFL players are helping Footscray’s charge towards finals, the benefits of the partnership go much deeper into the local football community.

With access to outstanding facilities and high-calibre coaches, Maple said he expected

the club’s local players to take the skills and knowledge they learn back to their home clubs.

“A lot of the programs are about giving them knowledge and developing them off-field as well as on-field,” Maple said.

A er a bye last week, the Bulldogs will take on Bendigo, Werribee, Casey and Richmond in the run towards September.

WithonlyWerribeeofthoseteamsintheVFL top eight, Footscray looks certain to maintain a top-four spot and could even get a home final as it has the competition’s best percentage.

Fogarty said the prospect of finals was exciting for everyone at the club.

“It’s unbelievable,” he said. “I thought I’d be with Spotswood in the WRFL, but it would

be great to play for Footscray in the finals.”

While the primary objective of the Footscray VFL team is to develop the players so they’re ready for the AFL, Maple said winning was a nice bonus for everyone.

“Ournumberonepriorityisthedevelopment of our AFL-listed players, and then our VFL-listed players and winning is then the cream on top,” he said.

“If we get that we’re happy as well. e main priority is the development of those two groups and the third part of that is the development of our staff.

“We are a development team.

“Winning is a great add-on, but it’s not why we exist.”

Ԃ Last Saturday, Jake Mutton joined a very select group of footballers. Being the games record holder – 361 – for Hoppers Crossing in the WRFL is usually the sort of record you wouldn’t expect to hold for a long time. There are exceptions, such as Michael Tuck and Kevin Bartlett whose 400-plus VFL-AFL games record will probably never be bettered. Mutton took the ‘most games’ mantle at the Warriors from Shane Buckingham, the club’s president.

Ԃ Also last Saturday, the WYN FM caravan set up for the Tarneit Titans’ first match-of-the-day broadcast. The people at the club, from president Sue Thornton down, were thrilled to be the star attraction on the local radio station. The supporters were sitting in their cars listening to the broadcast and loving every minute of it. I hope that kind of commitment, passion and dedication is never lost from local footy. It would be a sad day if that happened.

Ԃ The WRFL now has a division 3 competition, meaning that four teams that would otherwise not have made finals in other divisions will get the chance to play for a flag. The league will be presenting a best-on-ground medal in the division 3 grand final and on presentation night a medal to the best and fairest player in that division. These are new awards and so far unnamed. I would ask readers to let me know who they think the medals should be named after. Many individuals have given long and distinguished service to football in the FDFL and the WRFL and would be deserving of this honour. I think it’s important to get these ‘forever honours’ 100 per cent correct.

Ԃ The Atkins twins were at their hilarious best at the Werribee Football Club Hall of Fame dinner. I was doing the backstage interviews with the inductees and when it came time for Simon to be interviewed he sent his identical twin Paul over. I have known these boys since they crossed Bass Strait more than 20 years ago so there was no fooling me. They pulled some similar pranks in their early days at the Bulldogs. I remember walking into the Bulldogs’ rooms before a 1992 final. Paul was in a suit, standing outside the players’ area. There was an audible gasp from people who walked into the rooms thinking Simon, who was our gun on-baller, was a late withdrawal. Paul thought it was hysterical and played it for all it was worth.

Heart and spirit wins

The Bulldogs have a special place in my heart. e club is full of history and great people, past and present. It is a club that continues to strive for excellence and the prize of being known as the best AFL team in the land – and is looking to place a second Premiership Cup at our spiritual home, Whitten Oval.

How has our club survived for so long on the back of one premiership in the past 89 years?

From personal experience, the moment I walked into the club as a fresh-faced, skinny kid from the bush I noticed it had something very special. It was people. Ordinary people doing extraordinary things. ey had an extraordinary will to never give up, not for anything or anyone. ey had red, white and blue running through their veins.

I was able to see it on my rst day at the club. War had been declared – war against the AFL. e Bulldog faithful had been told that their team did not have a place in the new world of an expanding national competition. e Bulldogs were dead. But the AFL didn’t count on the strength and courage of Bulldog people. e rest is history.

One group that played a big part in the ght was our cheer squad, a crew full of heart and spirit. Against Essendon I sat with our Red, White and Blue Army with my family. It was the most exhilarating day we have had at the footy! Barracking and cheering for the boys as they played their hearts out.

e kids loved it. I loved it. It won’t be the last time we sit with the Bulldog cheer squad – my kids will see to that. Re ecting on my cheer squad experience crystallised what I already knew – we have survived for 89 years because of the Bulldog people.

The highway home

The western suburbs were once a blank spot on the map for me. I was completely lost as I took my rst drive down the Western Ring Road, but I was glad to nd my destination. is story is about an amazing lady living a 30-minute drive down the Westgate Freeway.

Her name is Robyn. She seems a normal patron of the western suburbs but has been an extraordinary in uence on me and a select few others.

Not long a er one of the happiest days of my life – having my name called out in the 2012 AFL national dra – I was fortunate to be accepted into Robyn’s home a er making the long trip down from the country.

She opened her house to me, giving me a bed to stay in and a home while beginning my journey in the AFL.

Not too long a er joining the club, pre-season training got the better of me. I was tiring fast. But Robyn saw me right. She is a hard worker, but as soon as she got home from work, dinner was under way. I was no real help, with limited cooking skills and next to no energy. One of Robyn’s close relatives had a major health scare while I was living in her house. She had sleepless nights and long days but never revealed this to me at the time. She would go straight to the hospital from work but always came home with a smile.

Her strength astounded me. at wasn’t her only attribute. e day I had moved in, I was a young 18-year-old making the transition from high school and oblivious to the real world. With Robyn’s guidance I was shown what it was like to be a good person in this world. Robyn is a great person and a role model.

Ask the Coach

What are some of the main areas of your job?

I take a long time to review the games, I go over it and do edits for players. A two hour game takes me most of the day to review as thoroughly as I want to.

What do you look for?

Everything. It can be as simple as-why are you standing here? What were you thinking here? I look at set ups, structures, the lot. I take edits into match committee, I took in eight the other week, and we go through those and talk about what we will do if this happens again. How will we react in the coaching box. We have to know what we want to happen, and then we will recreate that situation at training, and take the players through how we want it to be executed. I like to bounce ideas off a lot of people and get their feedback. Back to your original question, the job is evolving and I would love to speed up the review process, but that is not possible. The full review of two games, because I like to do the Development game as well, the edits, a written match report and talking to the other coaches and planning for training, takes the best part of two days.

The amount of information that is available is amazing.

The information we gather is great, but it is also time consuming. For instance we weigh the players before each game, and one player has weighed in half a kilo heavier each week for the last four weeks. So he is up 2 kilos, which I noticed on the information sheet I get. So I start to ask some questions. Is he stronger because he has been hitting the gym doing weights and put on 2 kilo of muscle mass, or is he having some extra mid winter comfort food. All that takes time, going through the GPS data takes time. As much time as you are willing to give-footy will take it all. It is insatiable. Whether it is spending time with the new recruiting manager, or meeting with the Geelong Falcons people, it all takes time. So it is about planning and being organized. So the bye week just gone is great, because it allows me to freshen up mentally.

Pitcher strikes it rich

At the age of 14, Wesley DeJong was already in high demand.

Within the space of 12 months, the Hoppers Crossingresidentwasselectedinrepresentative sides for three different sports: cricket, football and baseball.

As the training hours and level of commitment started to build, he faced the tough decision most gi ed multi-sport athletes confront.

DeJong decided to focus his attention on baseball and he’s been hitting home runs ever since.

“It got to a point where I knew I was not too bad at all of them, but I needed to choose,” he said. “ I chose baseball.”

Since that moment DeJong, who plays for the Werribee Giants, has dominated selection in Victorian state sides, playing in the under-16s and under-18s and even being selected in the under-23s.

ose performances have helped the now 17-year-old take his game to another level and receive the call-up to represent Australia.

DeJong will pull on the green and gold for the Australian schoolboys team that will tour the US during September and October.

As a pitcher, he will be throwing some heat against junior colleges and representative teams assembled by professional scouts, mostly on the west coast.

“We had the Victorian schoolboys in May in Wollongong. I played really well there and had a really good tournament,” he said.

“I was fortunate enough to get a phone call about two weeks later to say I had been picked. I was speechless. I was over the moon.

“It’s not really going to sink in until I get

I have played a high standard, but it’s different when you get into someone else’s home sport.”

Although it will be DeJong’s first baseballrelated trip to the US, it is unlikely to be the last – the Grange P-12 College student is eyeing a place in the US college system.

DeJong has been named a nominee for the

Dazzling Duggan fuels Jets’ big win

A best-on-ground performance from Liam Duggan helped the Western Jets to a 50-point smashing of the NSW/ACT Rams in the TAC Cup on Saturday.

Despite the strong wind at Williamstown’s Burbank Oval, Duggan was outstanding, booting three goals and winning a lot of important ball around the ground.

Jets coach Torin Baker was impressed with Duggan’s performance.

“Hewasoutstanding,”Bakersaid.“Heplayed both in the midfield and in the forward line and his use of the ball and his marking were highlights of his game.”

A er a close first half, the Jets ran away with the game in the third term, kicking six goals to two to set up the 14.14 (98) to 5.8 (38) win.

“I think the best thing about the third

quarterwasthewaywedeliveredtheballinside 50,” Baker said.

“ at’s something we’ve been practising fairly heavily over the last few weeks and to make the most of the opportunities in that third quarter was really pleasing.”

e Jets are in seventh place with a 7-7 record, one game and 20 percentage points ahead of ninth-placed Eastern Ranges in the race for the top eight. Baker said he had discussed the prospect of playing finals with his squad.

“Everyone is thinking about it so there’s no point not talking about it,” he said. ” e Jets meet sixth-placed Sandringham Dragons this week.

Global look for the final Falcon MOTOR

Ford last week revealed what will be the last Falcon – or at least the final Australian-built car to carry the iconic name.

e reveal was in the form of the new XR8 and XR6 performance sedans that blend the car’s history with Ford’s new global design “DNA”.

e new front fascia with trapezoidal grille brings it into line with models such as the Focus and Fiesta.

e exterior design manager for the new Falcon, Nima Nourian, said the Australian design team drew on all the visual strength of the existing XR series, which provided a perfect canvas to develop the 2014 Falcon XR series.

“ e challenge was delivering a powerful, yet premium look for the 2014 car,” Nourian said. “I’m proud of the fact that the new Falcon XR builds on an already distinctive design and yet delivers a whole new personality.”

Another new look is the slimmer leadlamps with “hockey stick”-style LED daytime running lamps that mimic the “double drop” headlight treatment of past XRs.

Mr Nourain said the new front end would feature across the Falcon range, which will link it to the new Mustang and the Mondeo, which joins the line-up in Australia next year.

Ford president and chief executive Bob Graziano said the XR8 badge was a welcome return to the Falcon line-up.

“We’re very excited by the return of the XR8, as this badge has not been seen on a Falcon since 2010,” he said. “Our enthusiasts have been asking for it so we’ve purposely revealed

the Falcon XR6 and XR8 first.”

He said the Falcon would be the only Australian-made large sedan available with the choice of three engines – the acclaimed EcoBoost four, in-line six and V8 petrol. “Quite simply, we think this is the best Falcon ever,”

he says. “I just couldn’t be more pleased with what the talented local team’s been able to accomplish – I’m really proud of them.

“When you look at cars like the new Falcon, it’s easy to understand why we are now leading global projects such as the new Everest, which

is designed and engineered in Australia for the world.”

Pricing, features and specifications of the 2014 Falcon will be revealed closer to launch. e Falcon range and ute will go on sale in the fourth quarter of this year.

Seat safety is deadly serious

Rod Easdown finds knowledge is power with child restraints

A few months ago, we wrote about the proper fitting of child seats and it brought a heap of feedback. Readers raised two major issues: that sometimes the “experts” get fitting wrong and that hiring a car with a child seat is a minefield.

Reader Lara told us that at Brisbane Airport “we hired a car and the child seat was poorly fitted. ey simply threaded the seat belt through without using the anchor point. e ‘fitted’ seat could be pulled out with one hand.” Shewenttoanotherrentalcompanywherethey fitted their restraints properly.

An isolated incident? I tried it out, booking a carfromawell-knowncompanyandspecifying a restraint. When the paperwork was done, the attendant handed me the seat and told me the fitting instructions were on it. Next customer please.

e lesson: go into the issue before finalising the booking and ask the company what type of restraints they use so you can check fitting instructions online. Have your homework done on child seats and anchor points on arrival, just in case.

e other issue is just as alarming. Reader John advises that the worst thing you can do is blindly believe that a so-called professional has done a proper job. He suggests you check, and to do that properly you need to have an idea of the correct fit of the seat involved.

John had a seat fitted by an “expert” who got it all wrong. He had specified the seat be fitted atcentrerear.Instead, itwasputonthekerbside to facilitate the split-folding of the seat.

Statistically, the centre rear is the safest place in the car, but many parents find it difficult to get their child in and out of there, and continually inconvenient. So they opt for the kerbside rear seat, which is a tad less safe in sideways impacts, but easier to live with.

John said that although the seat was tight, the fitter had threaded the seat belt incorrectly. When he complained he was told to bring the car in for inspection.

‘‘ I

dismissed the wasted

money and

thanked

my stars I read the

instructions

and checked ’’ - John

“I was supposed to drive a car with what I knew to be an incorrectly fitted seat, risking my son’s life just to prove that it was not fitted correctly,” he said. “I dismissed the wasted money and thanked my stars I had read the instructions and checked.”

It pays to check the seat itself, too. Of 34 seats independently tested by the American magazine Consumer Reports, only 13 got the highest rating. ree either detached from their bases on impact or their bases split.

With two others, sensors in test dummies registered higher injury measures than the rest of the seats.
