Give us extra police

Wyndham council has declared it will get behind a campaign to bring more police to the area.

Star Weekly understands police numbers in the city are set to become a major issue, with a large number of officers working in Werribee about to be transferred to a new 24-hour station in Waurn Ponds.

Wyndham police are already stretched, with reports that only one or two divisional vans are available to patrol, with most of their time taken up shuttling between jobs, notably reports of domestic violence.

Wyndham council chief executive Kerry ompson said the council would support calls for more police, rather than the installation of CCTV in Werribee’s CBD.

A police officer based at Werribee told StarWeekly more frontline officers were desperately needed.

“ e council is right on the money with this one,” the officer, who did not want to be named, said.

“ ere’s growing concern that things will get worse.”

Ms ompson again ruled out the installation of CCTV in Werribee.

“Advice from local police is that they have sufficient access to CCTV footage from other parties if required for evidence,” she said. “Police have also indicated that Werribee CBD does

not have the volume or types of crime to warrant the significant cost of installing cameras and monitoring footage.”

e anonymous police officer said discussion around CCTV cameras was a “distraction” and more police should be the top priority.

Tarneit Labor MP Tim Pallas said more police, not cameras, were the answer.

“ ere are fewer front line police officers assigned to local stations today than there were in November 2010,” Mr Pallas said.

But Cr Intaj Khan said he didn’t agree with the council’s stance.

“As an individual, I think the CBD needs CCTV cameras,” Cr Khan said.

“Wyndham needs more police, but that is an issue for the state government. We can install CCTV cameras without all that bureaucracy.’’

Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Andrew Elsbury said the council should not be happy with “mediocre” CCTV coverage.

“ e council continues to claim they want to activate the Werribee CBD and increase patronage of Station Place and Watton Street, yet they continue with a ‘she’ll be right’ haphazard system of shop owner-based CCTV cameras,” Mr Elsbury said.

He said since 2010, the government had posted 51 extra police to north-west metro division 2, which includes Wyndham.

Strokes, our underrated enemy

More than 2400 Wyndham residents are living withstrokeandmanymoreareatriskofhaving one, the latest figures show.

e National Stroke Foundation released statistics last week showing that 2471 people in the Lalor electorate, or 1146 out of every 100,000, were living with the side-effects of a stroke.

e figure is lower than state and national averages of 1886 and 1864 for every 100,000 residents respectively.

Dog and surgery in good nick

AWyndhamcouplehasmadeanextraordinary gesture to thank local vets for saving their four-legged friend.

David and Kim Larkin brought Angus their shih tzu-cross to the Melbourne University Vet HospitalinWerribeelastmonthwithaperineal hernia on his backside.

e condition is common in small breeds of dogs and can be fatal if le untreated.

ey were so impressed with the doctors’ ability to save Angus’s life that they decided to make a donation so the hospital can buy life-saving equipment that usually costs about $30,000.

emultiparametermonitorbeingpurchased with the donation, is a piece of technology that could help save thousands of pets’ lives every year.

e hospital’s Dr Monique Stanley said the equipment would enable specialists to better monitor animals during surgery and would drastically change the way pets are treated.

“At the moment we have to use a whole range of equipment to do all the jobs that this one piece will do on its own,” Dr Stanley said.

“It will basically help us monitor every animal that needs to have surgery.

“It’s really great that this family has chosen to make this donation and help save so many other pets.”

Development officer at the hospital Fleur Kellenbach said more than 17,500 pets were brought in for care every year and about 70 per cent of them would benefit from the multiparameter monitor.

So far this year, 245 Wyndham residents have had a stroke, with slightly more men then women affected.

Alarmingly, thousands more people were putting themselves at risk of having strokes by making poor lifestyle choices.

A total of 30,326 people currently have high blood pressure, 51,456 people have high cholesterol and 90,073 don’t get enough physical activity.

National Stroke Foundation chief executive Erin Lalor said strokes were a national issue.

“Stroke kills more women than breast cancer

‘‘ Stroke kills more women than breast cancer ’’ - Erin Lalor

and more men than prostate cancer,” Dr Lalor said.

“ is devastating disease also places significantdemandsonhealthservices, families and the community across the country.”

Compared to other electorates and the national and state averages, Lalor is not

considered a stroke hotspot, but Dr Lalor said more needed to be done to stop the figures increasing.

“Despitesuccessivegovernmentsrecognising stroke as a national health priority, Australia does not have a federally funded strategy or the care services to address widespread need,” she said.

“ e Stroke Foundation is urging national action to tackle stroke because all Australians need and deserve access to quality stroke care.”

Pair hurt in Hoppers crash

Police are warning drivers to take more care at a notorious Hoppers Crossing intersection a er a child and a woman were injured in a four-car collision.

e accident happened at the intersection of Old Geelong and Forsyth roads on July 16, closing the Forsyth Road off-ramp from the Princes Freeway for three hours.

Police said an east-bound car collided with another car at the intersection soon before 6pm.

e east-bound car then collided with two more vehicles, causing one to roll down an embankment.

A woman and child were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

e highway patrol’s Acting Sergeant Graeme Crouch said the driver of the east-bound car, a Westmeadows man, 39, returned a blood-alcohol reading of .115 – more than twice the legal limit.

He said the man had been driving at “excessive speed”.

His licence was suspended and he’s expected to be charged with conduct endangering serious injury, recklessly causing injury, “manner dangerous” and exceeding the prescribed concentration of alcohol.

He will face court at a later date.

Acting Sergeant Crouch said drivers using the intersection needed to remain alert and attentive at all times as there was not much room for error.

Break fast food-obesity chain

Health groups are calling for mandatory kilojoule labelling on fast foods as statistics reveal more than half of Wyndham residents are overweight or obese.

Latest Health Department statistics reveal that 52.5 per cent of Wyndham residents are considered to be overweight.

Across the western suburbs, 51.7 per cent of people are overweight or obese, while the state average is 48.6 per cent.

In a bid to reduce the number of overweight

Victorians, the Obesity Policy Coalition (OPC) and the Greens are calling for the implementation of mandatory kilojoule labellingonmenuboardsatallfastfoodoutlets.

Some fast food outlets currently have kilojoule labels, but the OPC wants the Liberal and Labor parties to make an election promise about mandatory labelling.

OPC executive manager Jane Martin said Victoria was lagging behind other states and territories when it came to kilojoule labelling.

Prouse house for sale

A er 71 years, an iconic Werribee house is set to have a change of ownership.

Number 9-11 Synnot Street, Werribee, or ‘Muswell’ as it has been known since it was built in the late 1930s, has hosted some of Wyndham’s best-known residents.

e two-storey Spanish Mission-style house was built for Claude S Creed, a local farmer, before being bought by Dr Charles Prouse in August, 1943.

DrProuselivedinthehousewithhiswifeand three children while running a small surgery out of a building at the side of the property.

e house has been owned by the Prouse familyeversinceandalsohasconnectionswith the Purcell family.

First National Real Estate managing director Bob Westwood said part of the property’s historic value came from the doctor.

“Dr Prouse was a greatly revered local resident,” Mr Westwood said. “It’s quite

amazing how many older local people would remember going to see him at that house.”

Mr Westwood said the house was the only known one of its kind in the western suburbs, with its Spanish style having been popular during the inter-war period.

Wyndham’s official history book, Wyndham

Our Story, notes that in 1946 the house was valued at £150, while by 1952 it had increased to £192. Mr Westwood said the house, on a 1788-square-metre block, was expected to be sold privately for a much greater sum.

“We’re looking at around $2.5 million for the property.”

ere is a heritage overlay on the house and Mr Westwood said he hoped that whoever bought it respected its history.

Expressions of interest are also being sought for an adjacent vacant block of land.

“Weknowthatwhenclearinformationabout the energy content of food is provided, along with education about energy requirements, people are encouraged to make purchases that are overall lower in energy,” she said.

Western Metropolitan Greens MP Colleen Hartland said the party would implement mandatory labelling if it won the state election in November.

Ms Hartland said there was a direct link between a high intake of unhealthy, energy-dense foods and obesity and type 2 diabetes.

In Wyndham, 4.3 per cent of people have type 2 diabetes.

“Body weight and diet are significant risk factors for diabetes,” Ms Hartland said. “Better kilojoule labelling is one important strategy for addressing this growing health problem

“By knowing how many kilojoules are in meals, we can choose healthier options for ourselves and our families.”

Ms Hartland said studies had shown energy content labelling on menus in other states encouraged customers to make healthier choices.

Wyndham residents will be transported to a time when people wore ball gowns and coaches carried the town’s wealthy socialites around.

A Grand Gala ball will help celebrate the 150th anniversary of Wyndham being proclaimedashirein1864,withtheeventbeing held at the city’s most iconic location, Werribee Mansion.

Event organiser Heather Marcus says Wyndham’s 150th birthday will be celebrated by reliving the area’s past glories.

“Pipers will play on the front lawn as people drink champagne, and VIP guests will be welcomed by trumpeters.”

e name Chirnside is synonymous with Wyndham, with members of the family having built the mansion, so Ms Marcus is hoping three generations of the family will be guests at the event.

Mental unit revamp starts

Work has started on a $34 million upgrade to the mental health unit at Werribee Mercy Hospital.

e upgrade, announced last April as part of the 2013-14 state budget, is expected to ease demand for the hospital’sexistingmentalhealthbedsand reduce waiting times in the emergency department.

e new unit will nearly double the hospital’s mental health capacity from 29 to 54 beds.

Ten beds will be high-dependency – used for high-risk patients who are violent or suicidal and need monitoring – and four beds will be used to assess people experiencing short-term mental health needs.

e long-awaited upgrade has been welcomed by the hospital, which regularly has patients waiting in its emergency department for more than 24 hours for a bed in its mental health unit.

Visiting the hospital last Wednesday for a sod-turning ceremony, Premier Denis Napthine said Wyndham’s growing population deserved facilities that could meet community’s demands.

“ is investment represents the largest-ever funding boost for mental health services in Melbourne’s west and will improve access to, and the quality of, mental health care for people in the area,” Dr Napthine said.

Kevin Hillier reflects on a club and its city

I have worked for the Werribee Football Club for a decade and have long realised the impact its highs and lows have on the people of Wyndham.

In the past three years, when the club has been knocked out one week short of another grand final appearance, you can feel the disappointment in the town’s streets.

e Werribee Football Club is the major sports club in the area. Last Saturday night, nearly 400 people gathered to celebrate its first 50 years and acknowledge the first inductees into the club’s Hall of Fame.

ere were people from all walks of life, from different ethnic backgrounds, different socio-economic groupings and certainly from different professions.

e Werribee Football Club is the melting pot of the city, as it should be, but when you walk through the door everyone is treated the same and everyone is equal. e club could easily be just about football but it has always been about a connection to the people and the community of which it’s a part.

e club has three people working in its community development area, which is hands-on into schools, junior football programs such as Auskick, and introducing the game to the newly arrived citizens of Wyndham.

e football area is a pathway for local kids to try to be the next Michael Barlow, Dale Morris, Kyle Hartigan or Ben Brown.

Not everyone can achieve that, but everyone who pulls on a Werribee jumper is given every possible resource and assistance to be the best they possibly can.

Last Saturday night brought home to all in attendance just what the club has meant to people like Eddie Marriott, Kerryn O’Brien and John Comben, who were elevated to Legend status.

Hall of Fame inductee Simon Atkins summed it up beautifully on stage when I asked him about the highs and lows in his time at the club: “Kev, there were only highs. ere are no lows when you are involved in a great

Wyndham lotto win

A Wyndham Vale man will buy the motorbike he’s dreamed of after winning $624,516 in Saturday’s TattsLotto draw. The man, 59, also plans to put the money towards paying off his mortgage and funding his retirement. He bought his ticket from the Werribee Plaza Lotto kiosk, which has sold nine winning division 1 tickets in the past three years.

Contribute to multicultural plan

Residents are being urged to have their say on Wyndham council’s cultural diversity plan. The document will guide the council’s approach to working with multicultural communities. It will also promote cultural diversity by supporting programs and events that foster understanding and celebrate multiculturalism. Residents can have their say at a community meeting at the civic centre from 7pm on Wednesday, July 30, or online at www. wyndham.vic.gov.au/cultural_diversity.

Language program

Wyndham residents grappling with the challenge of learning English are being encouraged to strike up a conversation as part of a new program. Free conversational English classes are being offered at three council centres. The volunteer-run program is held at Point Cook Community Learning Centre on Tuesdays at 10.30am and Fridays at 4pm, at Wyndham Cultural Centre on Wednesdays at 2.30pm and at Penrose Community Centre on Wednesdays at 6pm. Class action for ‘ugly’ tip

Wyndham could become known as “Smellbourne” if the council’s tip is allowed to grow in height, a group of grade 5 pupils has claimed.

ElevenpupilsfromStPetersApostlePrimary School in Hoppers Crossing wrote letters to Star Weekly complaining about the “smelly” and “ugly” tip mountain.

“No one likes the tip and it’s bad for the environment,”BryceRozesaid.“Idon’tlikethe

rubbish mountain … it can wreck the land.”

Levi Vieira wrote: “[Did] you know that seagulls, mice and rats carry diseases? Well, I did, and that’s another problem with the Werribee tip. It’s a problem because while the seagulls, ratsandmicearetravellingtothetip, they can spread diseases which will make us sick and possibly even die!”

e pupils have called on the Wyndham council to invest in technology that would mean the height of the tip wouldn’t need to be increased.

“Instead of increasing the height, the council could invest in MIRF machinery,”

Abbie Martis wrote. “A MIRF is a machine that can separate recyclable materials, like plastic, from the rubbish, then only one third goes to the landfill.”

e pupils researched the tip a er learning about the effects humans have had on the land in Australia.

As part of their work they were asked to write to the council or the local newspaper to express their concerns.

Operation nabs four for sport venue break-ins

Four men have been charged over robberies at 20 sporting venues across Melbourne’s inner west.

Clubs broken into include Altona Sports Club, Westgate Golf Club in Spotswood, Kooringal Golf Club in Altona, Werribee Golf Club, and Altona North, Yarraville and Werribee bowls clubs.

A full inventory of the amount stolen is still being undertaken, but the total is believed to be about $38,000.

Detective Sergeant Brad Lawrence of the Hobsons Bay crime investigation unit said mainly coins were stolen.

“In some instances, poker machines were broken into,” he said.

He said three men were arrested last ursday a er a burglary at Westgate Golf Club. A fourth man was subsequently arrested at Kerang in northern Victoria.

e arrests were a culmination of Operation Bare Foot, investigating burglaries at 20 venues between May 29 and July 17.

A 23-year-old Tarneit man and 19year-old Wyndham Vale man have been remanded to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on July 31 and August 15, respectively. A 19-year-old Werribee man and 22-year-old Kerang man were bailed until November 11 and October 16, respectively.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Car-park necessities

Five hundred million dollars for a new suburb is a lot of money (“Win for Wyndham’s west”, Star Weekly, July 16).

We need it badly for infrastructure, for our public roads and for the roads to the new rail link. I live in Werribee South and catch the train daily to the city. I could catch trains at Hoppers Crossing, Werribee, Williams Landing, Aircraft or Laverton, which are six to nine kilometres away. The problem is parking.

So we really need a few of those millions to make car parks three to four levels down and three to four levels up, as they do at our shopping centres.

The government needs this to bring in rail customers and reduce peak-hour traffic loads. I can’t believe it’s hasn’t happened already.

With those five stations plus the two new stations we will be getting, now is the time to create jobs in the west and get the soil out of those holes, those concrete trucks in to pour and those car parks happening ASAP.

Michael Berton, Werribee South

Bus shelter puzzle

I don’t understand why Wyndham council keeps on replacing bus-shelter damage with glass.

Sayers Road limitations

Lowering the speed limit on Sayers Road was ridiculous (“Fast action sought for slow

SPICE UP YOUR KITCHEN ON US

motion”, Star Weekly, July 16) – especially between Palmers Road and the Kororoit Creek Road entrance to the freeway. It was 80 when I moved here, then it was 70, now it’s 60.

There are no houses, no intersections, no pedestrians – just fenced or unfenced fields. Except for annoying people, there is no merit and no increase in safety from the lower limit.

People have overtaken me dangerously because I use the new limit.

Make it safer for bike riders by providing a real bike lane on Sayers Road – not the bumpy, pot-holed, glass-filled side strip that comes and goes. Allow people to get to their destination ASAP by getting our limit back to 70 or 80 in that section.

Even though Hogans, Heaths and Derrimut roads have increased housing around them, there are no people or pedestrians on the road – just cars. Premigita, via web

Slow limits are not the solution to accidents. It’s about driver attitudes – rude, drunk, impatient and uneducated drivers. Lower limits even cause sleepiness and frustration, which may lead to accidents. Jenassy, via web

One of Mr Farrugia’s arguments is that the lower speed limit extends drive times. Let’s look at this: To travel 10 kilometres at 60km/h takes 10 minutes; to travel 10 kilometres at 70km/h takes 8.34 minutes –a whole 1.66 minutes difference. To Travel 20 kilometres at 60km/h takes 20 minutes; to travel 20 kilometres at 70km/h takes 17.09 minutes – 2.51 minutes difference.

The average distance I travel within these 60km/h zones (on a daily basis) is between

10 and 20 kilometres. For the sake of three minutes, leave the limits at 60km/h. They may be classed as main roads, but they also have houses and now have a lot more traffic on them than they did even five years ago. I pass through the Derrimut/Heaths and Heaths/Morris intersections on a daily basis. Once a week there would be a nose-to-tail accident. Since the slower speed limits were introduced, I haven’t seen any. I am not saying that it has stopped them – but it has definitely reduced them.

Non-frustrated driver, via web

A recipe for gridlock

Huge population increase in Wyndham and other western suburbs adding even more traffic to hugely congested roads, minimal infrastructure improvement plus additional trucks on the West Gate coming from the west to the east port – a surefire recipe for gridlock, potential disaster on the West Gate Bridge and with even more pressure on it (“Port heads for trucks ‘nightmare’”, Star Weekly, July 16).

Logistics companies are located in the west. A western alternative port would alleviate some of the cross-city trucking across an already overloaded river crossing. It’s only recently that the West Gate Bridge was being repaired due to cracking from truck-braking damage.

Still awaiting answers

A Werribee woman is hoping two unknown drivers could hold the key to explaining her husband’s death.

For Lynette Flowers, the date November 10, 2011, is forever burned into her memory.

Her husband, David Flowers, was sitting in his car at a roundabout in Laverton North when another driver slammed into him.

A police brief on the incident shows that the other driver claimed he felt dizzy at the time and his vision became blurred.

He claims to have lost control of his car while driving along the Princes Freeway before taking the Laverton North exit where he became airborne when he drove straight over a roundabout and into Mr Flowers’ car.

According to the police brief, the driver had a stroke the next day while he was in hospital.

For more than a year, Ms Flowers has been calling for a coronial inquest so that questions about her husband’s death can nally be answered.

Issues such as the other driver’s medical records going missing from the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine and a delay in police interviewing him have le her reeling.

A letter sent from the Coroners Court of Victoria to Ms Flowers’ lawyers earlier this month states that further investigations have been made, but there were still grey areas.

It con rms that two other cars were hit by the driver before he crashed into David’s car.

“Investigators appealed for witnesses to the initial collision through all media outlets and on Crime Stoppers,” the letter states.

“ e drivers of those vehicles never made themselves available to investigators.” e coroners court is expected to announce by the end of August if it will grant an inquest.

Plea to bring back the music

A South Australian couple who lost musical equipment valued at $15,000 when their car was stolen in Deer Park are hoping the public can help nd the missing instruments.

David Clark and Kate Townsend’s car was stolen in April and although it was eventually found, all of their belongings were gone.

Mr Clark and Ms Townsend haven’t given up hope of getting back their equipment. ree weeks ago, someone le the couple’s laptop and accordion at Williams Landing train station.

“I will never give up hope of nding one of the guitars and the concertina,” MsTownsendsaid.“Ourdaughter-in-law checks ebay every day and we’ve put things online to try and get attention.”

e couple run a live music centre and said the items were worth more than money.

“ ey have sentimental value,” Mr Clark said. “ e concertina is my grandfather’s and comes from England. It’s over 100 years old. e other guitars we had made … so there aren’t many like this in Australia.”

Melton Crime Investigation Unit’s Detective Robert Henley said police were appealing for the public for help.

Tag team in big cover-up

A team of Point Cook residents is on a mission to stamp out gra ti in their suburb.

ey hope that in time their anti-gra ti taskforce will expand to cover all of Wyndham.

e taskforce, initially set up by the Point Cook Action Group, has begun ridding Point Cook of gra ti by painting over tags on sound barriers and walls along Palmers Road with the help of the Masters Williams Landing store.

Group member Paul Harder said residents

volunteered their time to paint over the gra ti because they wanted to put a stop to the “o ensive” behaviour.

“I think people nd gra ti o ensive,” he said. “People who do it feel like they have right to do it, but they don’t.”

Mr Harder said that while there was no magic method to stop gra ti, he hoped painting over tags soon a er they appeared would teach vandals that spraying public and private property was a waste of time.

“I think people really want to put an end to

this problem so we’re hoping this can become a Wyndham-wide program,” he said.

e Point Cook anti-gra ti taskforce was formed a er a council decision to create a gra ti management strategy.

Underthestrategy, thecouncilwillintroduce areas where street art is permitted and will run education programs for school-aged children.

e parks department, which removes gra ti, will have its budget increased from $390,000 to $405,990 a year.

Bof ns take up dairy duties

Butter that is easier to spread, lactose-free milk that really does taste like milk, and yoghurt that doesn’t go watery in the fridge are just some of the products that could soon be created in Werribee.

A Dairy Innovation Hub, which brings together some of Australia’s leading dairy research groups, opened this week on the Princes Highway, where it is hoped researchers will create innovative, long-lasting dairy products with high nutritional value.

ehubisco-fundedbytheAustralian Research Council, Dairy Innovation Australia, the University of Melbourne and the University of Queensland. Its researchers will work together for ve years on a $13 million program in the hope of better understanding the structures of dairy products.

Hub director Sally Gras said dairy manufacturing was worth more than $2 billion a year to the Australian economy. Associate Professor Gras said its worth would continue to increase as demand in Asia increased.

“We will work to nd solutions and opportunities for the Australian dairy industry to make the most of our geographic location and grow our exportsintothelucrativeAsianmarket.”

B-24 Liberator Memorial Restoration Fund community liaison officer Tony Muller said the 1940 World War II hangar, which is on the Werribee Satellite Airfield on the corner of Old Farm Road and the Old Princes Highway, was nominated by heritage engineer Owen Peake.

Mr Muller said the awards were great news for the restoration group.

“We survive on visitors and the hangar listing will give us a huge leg up,” he said.

Mr Peake said the aircra was considered to have played a pivotal role in defending Australia against Japanese forces during World War II.

“ e American-designed hangars represented a solidification of the relationship between newly allied Australian and American forces,” Mr Peake said.

“Engineers Australia is proud to recognise these two excellent examples of Australian history and engineering ingenuity.”

Hoppers shoppers re up for giving

Customers of a Hoppers Crossing store have helped to raise $80,000 for charities.

e Good Guys Hoppers Crossing have donated a percentage of every sale made to groups such as Open Families Australia since 2006.

Big turnaround for vinyl

It’s the retro comeback that has music lovers in a spin.

WithiPodsanddigitaltechnologydominating the modern landscape, it’s easy to forget a time when albums had to be turned over, and scratches and interference on a track were signs of character rather than imperfections.

Whether you remember them from the first time around or you’re a recent convert, there’s no denying vinyl is back. Every Tuesday night, in a small Yarraville bar, people of all ages are coming together to share their common bond.

In response to the vinyl revival, local musician and DJ Leif van den Dungen has launched BYO Vinyl Nights. Record-lovers are being encouraged to bring along their favourites and have them added to the playlist or even try their hand on the turntables.

Mr van den Dungen, who was born in the late 1970s and missed out on vinyl’s heyday,

said there was a renewed appreciation for the format.

“My nights provide a real hands-on experience where people not only have their music played, but I’ll teach them how to DJ and they can have a go on the turntables and mixer.’’

He said the enduring appeal of vinyl was simple. “You get a warmer, richer tone, but there’s obviously the nostalgic factor for some older people. ere’s also the extras that come with vinyl records, such as the artwork on the cover and the liner notes, which you just don’t get with downloaded music.’’

BYO Vinyl Night is on Tuesdays from 7.30-11pm at Yarra Lounge, 7 Ballarat Street, Yarraville (opposite the Sun eatre). For more details, visit www.melbournerecordclub.com.

Children living in Williams Landing and Truganina are being urged to give scouting a try, with the area’s group looking for new members.

etwosuburbsarecoveredbytheWilliams Scout Group, which was re-launched at a community meeting on Monday night.

e group’s membership is relatively small compared to Wyndham’s five other groups and Werribee district leaders hope they can encourage more people to sign up.

River’s friends to go native

Residents are being encouraged to grab their gardening gloves and head to Riverbend Historical Park on Sunday to help plant native trees, shrubs and grasses.

Wyndham councillor Peter Gibbons said the planting session was a chance for people to give back to the environment and get to know like-minded people.

“By taking part in this event for a few hours, there will be long-term benefits to our community and the work will leave a lasting mark on one of our most popular reserves,” he said.

“Surveys also show people value the other benefits of trees, including improving storm water management, reducing the need for air-conditioning and improving air quality.”

e planting will run from 10.30am.

District development leader Sharon Woollam said the group was trying to attract children from the many families moving into Truganina and Williams Landing.

“Wyndham is the biggest growth corridor in Victoria, but we are not snapping up young people,” she said.

Ms Woollam said these children were missing out on the many opportunities offered by the movement.

“Being a Scout helps young people learn life skills.”

e group wants to increase its membership

so it can have at least 20 people in each age bracket. Ms Woollam said volunteers were also needed to help run sessions. Parents could be put through leadership training and complete a certificate IV in business.

Ms Woollam said scouting was open to anyone aged six to 26, with programs tailor-made for each member.

She said Wyndham’s groups had recently experienced a surge in the number of members with autism or Asperger’s syndrome.

Aged residents ‘left in the cold’

Rotary widens its reach

Rotary clubs have traditionally been viewed as “male, pale and stale”, but one Wyndham club is working to change all that.

e Rotary Club of Wyndham is actively recruiting members from some of the city’s major migrant communities.

Twenty leaders from the local Sudanese, Karen, Egyptian and Indian communities were special guests at an information night last week.

Club membership director Gary Willson

said the initiative was about ensuring Wyndham’s social clubs reflected the make-up of the community.

“Rotary clubs around Australia and particularly Wyndham are very keen to better reflect our cultural diversity,” Mr Willson said.

“ e club has typically been seen as male-oriented and white, but the community itself is obviously much more diverse than that.”

Mr Willson said while 42 per cent of the club’s existing members were women, it

wanted to do more to ensure it was truly representative.

“Not only do [our new members] come from culturally different backgrounds and immigrant backgrounds, but they are actually leaders in their communities and they can help us bridge some gaps.”

MrWillson, whohaslivedinWerribeesince 1977, said he had seen the face of Wyndham change dramatically, a fact the club wanted to recognise and embrace.

699 BARKLY ST, WEST FOOTSCRAY

Barkly Place Apartments in West Footscray opens up the opportunity for a bustling urban lifestyle and the potential for great capital growth, all at the one time.

The transformation and rising popularity of Footscray echoes the rise of suburbs of Carlton, Fitzroy and Port Melbourne 10 to 15 years ago. Located just 7km from Melbourne’s CBD, Barkly Place Apartments reflects a unique opportunity

to participate in the transformation of the West. In mid 2013 Footscray, West Footscray and Maidstone were highlighted by property valuers Herron Todd White as hotspots for capital growth over the next four to six years – underpinned by their proximity to the CBD, local redevelopment and gentrification from a previously largely industrial environment. It is happening and Barkly Place is making it accessible to you.

Find your feet in West Footscray

Like so many pockets of Melbourne, the face of West Footscray is rapidly changing from a one-time bustling industrial zone to a multicultural creative melting pot. This little corner of Melbourne, just 7km from the city centre, is the latest hotspot for those seeking that edgy, but hip lifestyle often associated with Victoria’s capital.

Here are some of the best things to do in West Footscray.

SAVOUR THE FLAVOURS OF FOOTSCRAY

Quickly becoming the latest go-to spot for foodies near the city, West Footscray caters to a huge variety of palates with African, Vietnamese, Indian and Italian restaurants lining the main street, and offering a snippet of the mix of cultures in this lively little area.

TAKE A WALK ALONG THE MARIBYRNONG RIVER

With its origins somewhere on the slopes of Mount Macedon, the Maribyrnong River flows down to Port Philip Bay and has long played an important role in the lives of residents. These days, a shared walking and jogging trail runs along the river, buttressed by playgrounds, barbeque areas, picnic tables and cafes.

ROW YOUR BOAT

One of the nicest places in Melbourne to go rowing, the Maribyrnong River is home to a number of rowing clubs. Because it’s a little out of the city there isn’t much traffic on the water. The river boasts magnificent views of the Melbourne skyline.

Now Maddie can dance

When she was hospitalised last year a er collapsing from weakness, Maddie Gillespie weighed just 36 kilograms.

A year later, the healthy Hillside woman, 19, is helping others with an eating disorder.

In October, she will take part in an Altona Meadows ‘Zumbathon’ – an activity she loves –to raise awareness and money for the Butter y Foundation, which helps people a ected by eating disorders.

Ms Gillespie says her descent into anorexia started a er bullying from her peers.

“It started with a few friends of mine at the time bullying me to the point where I thought I had to be someone I wasn’t,” she says.

“So I started going to the gym and trying to eat healthy. “For a while it was working for me … but then it just took over.

“I started over-exercising. I’d exercise three hours a day and I was restricting eating to the point where I’d only eat one thing a day.

“You think that getting skinny will bring you peace of mind … it brings you to the point where you isolate yourself because you don’t want people to see how skinny you’ve gotten.’’

Ms Gillespie says she wouldn’t go out to lunch or dinner with people because she was too scared to eat.

“SayIwasathomeandmyfamilywashaving ameal,IwouldhideitorsayIwasn’thungry,or scrape it in the bin before they noticed.

“I was lying and deceiving, which is something I’d never usually do.”

Ms Gillespie realised something was amiss and sought help from GPs and psychiatrists.

“I ended up being put in hospital because I fell over and hit my head due to a lack of energy,’’ she says.

‘‘ at was when I nally realised that somethingwasreallywrong.Ihadallthesetests done in hospital which revealed a lot of things about my liver shutting down due to what I was doing.”

Ms Gillespie spent two weeks in hospital and several months at the Melbourne Clinic.

While she has gained weight, she says she still battles between her “eating disorder self” and “normal voice”. MY WYNDHAM

Wyndham Community and Education Centre chief executive Jennie Barrera enjoys being part of the city’s culutral diversity, writes Rebecca Miller

What’s your connection to the local community?

I’m chief executive of Wyndham Community and Education Centre and we’re celebrating 40 years in the community this year. e centre runs education and community service programs, including English language programs for newly arrived refugees and immigrants, a VCAL course, pre-accredited training programs and accredited vocational training in community services, childcare and business. We also provide settlement services, including a tenancy outreach for newly arrived migrants; men’s and women’s groups, and healthy living, family and children’s programs. In 2008, the centre established Saffron, the name for cafés at Duncans Road; Wyndham Park Primary school, which is open to the public; and at Wyndham Vale Community Learning Centre. It’s a social enterprise where volunteers, who may become paid employees, learn barista skills, customer service, food and menu preparation, cash handling and catering. I’m also chairwoman of Wyndham Humanitarian Network, which supports migrants, and a member of local committees.

How do you spend your downtime?

Kia ora Kaikoura

A VIEW OF KAIKOURA WITH THE SEAWARD KAIKOURA RANGE IN THE BACKGROUND

ere’s something special about arriving somewhere at night only for it’s full beauty to be revealed at sunrise. From our cliff-top balcony looking over Kaikoura, all we could see were the lights of the sleepy town and shape of the bay outlined by e Esplanade.

With dawn’s early light, the silhouette of the SeawardKaikouraRangeimposeditselfonthe vista like an approaching storm. e snowy peaks slowly revealed themselves as the sun rose over the Pacific, gradually transforming from pinkish hues to brilliant white as the morning went on.

I was mesmerised.

Kaikoura is a seaside town near the top of New Zealand’s South Island, between Christchurch and Picton.

e views on State Highway 1 from either direction are spectacular, particularly from the north where the stretch that winds along the coast is every bit as stunning as the Great Ocean Road.

It’s a popular summer holiday spot for New Zealanders, offeringahostofoutdooractivities on land, sea and air ranging from fishing and diving to hiking and whale-watching.

Winter is also a great time to visit for a short stay, with relatively mild temperatures despite the snow on the 600-metre peaks above.

In brilliant sunshine and light winds, we decided to take a whale-watching flight from the local airstrip. e waters just off Kaikoura are home to male sperm whales, which come down south to feed in the deep waters.

ere’s a ledge in the Pacific not far off shore, meaning it’s possible to see the whales from land. Whaling was the dominant industry here in the late 1800s e flight in the four-seat Cessna provided more spectacular views of the peninsula, mountains and rolling hills as we circled looking for sperm whales, which surface for air for about 10 minutes a er 45 minutes in the deep.

A er20minutesofcircling,thepilotsteered the aircra toward what I first thought was a

It’s not just whales that come to Kaikoura for the seafood. e town’s name is Maori for meal of crayfish, which is pretty apt. ere are a few places to get fresh crays, none more famous than Nins Bin, a little kiosk about 15 minutes north of town on Highway 1. It’s worth the hype.

As far as breakfast goes, it doesn’t get much more decadent than sharing a $55 crayfish

pulled from the ocean in front of you just a few hours before.

Another great place to dine was the Pier Hotel on the edge of town. It’s a friendly pub with great steak and seafood, including seafood chowder, green-lipped mussels from the nearby Marlborough Sounds and, of course, local crayfish.

ere are many ways to burn off your indulgences, even in winter. One of them is a hike along the Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway, which offers hikes of varying distances. We spent a couple of hours trekking along the limestone cliffs and beaches that are teeming with fur seals and birds.

ereareinformationboardsalongthewalk explaining the natural and human history of the area, including Maori settlement and the whaling era. It’s an easy hike.

If you don’t feel like hiking but want to see the seals, quite a few frequent the car park at the tip of the peninsula.

With the views we had from our cliff-top accommodation we could be forgiven for not being so active the entire time. While we have beaches and snow-capped mountains in Australia, there’s nowhere where you can be so close to both.

The Hall of Fame Night The Hall of Fame inductees

The 1993 premiership and 28 other people were the first inductees into the Werribee Football Club Hall of Fame, announced at a gala dinner last Saturday night at the Werribee Racing Club. The night was the highlight of the club’s 50th-year celebrations.

The five current Legends were the first inductees and then followed 23 stalwarts and the 1993 side, whose members won the club’s only premiership. All decades were covered and every area of the football club’s operations were highlighted by one or more of the inductees who have filled every role imaginable in 50 years.

The inductees were called up in groups of three, with the opening trio of John Comben, Alan Clayton and Kerryn O’Brien getting the night off to a very amusing start. There were stories of the club’s early days and the good and bad times that the Tigers faithful have enjoyed and endured.

Only one Hall of Famer could not be in attendance – triple best and fairest winner Travis Robertson, who will be presented with his plaque on ‘past players day’, Sunday, August 10.

Lyn Wood became the first and only woman to be inducted for her tireless work as an administrator for more than a decade when the club was facing financial crisis after crisis, culminating in a proposed merger with Williamstown in 1995.

After a six-year absence, Geelong premiership player James Podsiadly returned to the club and paid tribute to the time he spent at Werribee. It was, he said, the springboard for his AFL successes.

Dot Ryan, a well-known Werribee identity, accepted the 1993 Hall of Fame induction plaque on behalf of the Werribee community. Dot reminisced about the celebrations for the 1993 grand final in the old Centenary Hall – a night that will live long in everyone’s memory.

Current president John Nicol spoke of his personal pride in receiving the Hall of Fame honour and was glowing in his praise for those who had come before him and the connections the club has continued to develop with the community.

It was a night to remember.

1993 – all those involved in the club’s only premiership year

Wyndham residents love their local footy, none more so than local businessman and long time Wyndham resident Tino Ballan.

Tino’s love for the club began when he attended his first game of local footy at the Tiger’s home ground, Chirnside Park. He can now be found most weekends with wife Robyn cheering on his beloved Tigers from the sidelines or in the club room after the match proudly belting out the team song after a well deserved win.

Tino and Robyn have proudly watched both sons, Paul and Mark play for the Werribee Tigers and his passion for the club has been passed down through the generations to his grandchildren who can often be found cheering on their Tigers from the sidelines.

During his time with the club Tino has built strong friendships with both previous and current players, members and coaching staff and is honored to have been inducted into this years Werribee Tiger’s Hall of Fame.

‘I am extremely proud to have been inducted into the Werribee Tigers Hall of Fame and would like to thank the club, it’s players, members, the board and coaching staff, in particular John Nicol and Mark Penaluna for their friendship and support over the years. Congratulations to all of the other inductees.’

This year Ballan Holden celebrates their 15th year as the major sponsor of the Tigers - the longest major sponsor partnership in the history.

The Legends

The dictionary defines a legend as “a famous or remarkable person”. The three new Werribee Football Club Legends may not be famous – but they are remarkable.

John Comben, Eddie Marriott and Kerryn O’Brien have given a lifetime of service to the Werribee Football Club and thoroughly deserve to be given the highest accolade the club can bestow on an individual. They are legends.

All three are former players, with John “Jacko” Comben being the standout. He was a club captain, multiple best-and-fairest winner and the first Werribee player to wear the Big V. While football is about the players, the club is about the people – and that is where all three new Legends excelled. Between them they held every role you could possibly imagine at the club. Each has been involved in the club for more than 40 years.

The three men are great mates, and now that bond has been further etched into their history and that of the Werribee Football Club.

SUPPORTING SENIOR DRIVERS

In the context of an aging population, older road user safety will continue to be a key concern for an ever increasingly large percentage of the Victorian community. Therefore, as a priority RoadSafe Westgate promotes and organises best practice older driver programs.

Senior Drivers Expo 23rd August 2014

For information on Health & Driving, Prescribed Medicines & Driving, Road Law Updates, Free & Confidential Roadworthy checks & driving assessments. An opportunity to ask questions of experts in driving, roadworthiness and road law.

Bookings are essential contact Leigh on 9315 9464, there are limited places so get in early.

RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council is a road safety advocacy group that implements road safety programs and is supported by the municipalities of Hobsons Bay,

The road to driving longer

Support for older drivers is the focus of an upcoming road safety expo that will aim to keep senior road users on the road for longer and driving safely.

RoadSafe Westgate will host the Senior Drivers Expo on August 23.

Patrons will be able to get up-to-date information on road safety, driving, prescribed medicines and road laws and have a free and confidential check on driving technique, vehicle safety and driver confidence.

Older drivers program co-ordinator Leigh Hardinge said senior drivers were frequently involved in road crash incidents. But while it was often suggested seniors cause crashes, Monash University research showed senior drivers were not more likely to cause crashes than younger people, he said.

“The fact that senior drivers, in general, are

relatively safe, doesn’t mean that they can’t improve,” he said. “After all, it’s a long time since that licence test at age 18.”

All drivers, regardless of age, must report to

VicRoads any long-term or permanent health conditions that may affect their fitness to drive.

Hardringe believes it is important for drivers to know what effect medicines may have on their driving and that drivers should ask a doctor or pharmacist for advice before driving.

“As we get older, the distances we drive tend to go down,” he said.

“It becomes easier to forget about keeping the car in roadworthy condition. It’s a good idea to have your car checked over each year by a reliable mechanic. The beginning of winter is a good time to get this done.”

Washed down with several bottles of Veuve Clicquot – vintage of course.

WAFFLE ON

Winter is the perfect time to embrace the indulgence of hot home-made waffles for breakfast, lunch and dessert.

The Breville Smart Waffle maker creates thick, crispy waffles, ready for you to plate like a pro. Its Waffle IQ technology automatically calculates the correct cooking time, and its extra-deep cooking plates create thick waffles with pockets that trap syrup and melted ice-cream. The no-mess moat catches and cooks any batter overflow for an easy clean-up.

Try sweet banana, pecan and caramel, sticky date with butterscotch sauce or poached rhubarb and vanilla custard. Alternatively, go the savoury option of Wasabi, cheddar and caramelised pancetta, or Danish feta and spinach waffles.

HIGH TEA

Speaking of winter indulgence, the Mansion Hotel in Werribee has joined forces with T2 to present High SocieTEA – an exclusive series of high teas – on the last Sunday of each month. Served by an open fire in the historic library over winter, the lavish spread includes sweet and savoury treats, including a tailored T2 cocktail. Bookings are essential. It’s not just the six upstairs bedrooms that mark this street-handsome property as all about family. It’s also the location: schools, childcare, playground, medical and dental services, and Alexander Square shopping centre are literally around the corner in this quiet neighbourhood.

The columned entry portico partially signposts the interior, where wide entries to rooms are de ned by columns beneath arches; this engenders a grand Italianate feel, but the decor is an unusual mix of styles expressed in picture rails bisecting two-tone paintwork, splashes of modernity, and down-home sprawl.

Ranged along the wide, tiled entry hall are a study, lounge room, dual-entry theatre/living room, a small bathroom, and laundry with closet. An enclosed storage passage off the laundry accesses the

remote-controlled double garage and the rear entertainment room (more about that later).

The modern kitchen has heaps of cupboards, a walk-in pantry, wide fridge recess, dishwasher, stainless-steel wall oven and a Lofra 900mm gas cooker (yes, both). An adjoining (separate) rumpus room neighbours a small room (with closets) suitable as a study or hobby space; next door is a step-down multi-purpose room with built-in desk and cabinetry.

Carpeted stairs head up to bedrooms, main bathroom and separate toilet. The main bedroom has a walk-in robe and ensuite, while the others have built-in robes.

The rumpus room and meals zone open to a vast entertainment room with concrete underfoot and timber-lined ceiling above.

Designed to accommodate the hordes, this no-frills, highly practical room has a pizza oven, mains gas barbecue, kitchenette, split-system, wood heater and ceiling fans. Throw around some fairy lights and this will become a pad where even typical teenage after-party mess will cause little alarm. Out back, there’s a big lawn, timber cubby house, garden shed, water tank and a netted vegie garden. Through the garage’s back roller door, expansive, concrete parking space is partially under cover.

Ducted heating, evaporative cooling, alarm, ducted vacuum, intercom, high ceilings, 5kW solar power and roller shutters are other perks to this 43-square house on a corner block of about 753 square metres.

Taking care of your health is more important now than ever before and Modern Medical Wyndham Vale delivers a service to fit in with today’s lifestyle.

Modern Medical is a group of family medical clinics distributed across Melbourne.

Dr Afzal Khan heads the Wyndham Vale team and is highly dedicated and experienced.

“We offer family-friendly medical services in a modern environment,” he says. “We pride ourselves on providing comprehensive care to women and children throughout all stages of their lives.”

The highly qualified doctors and soon nurses too are available five days week offering services such as four-year-old health checks, immunisations, women’s health checks, family planning, pap smears, pregnancy care and preventative health care.

They understand that men require private and confidential care throughout various stages of their lives, including health check’s, blood-pressure screening, prostate screening and preventative medicine. All clinics provide appointments outside business hours to ensure easy accessibility.

Comprehensive chronic health management is available and includes diagnosis, education and advice on things such as diabetes and asthma.

Throughout the year, clinic promotions of health issues include Daffodil Day

for Cancer. The clinic also sends out information about health promotions such as bone-density scanning and immunisations.

There’s also pathology services with a collection centre on site.

“Our clinic has a distinct role … and it is focused on improving chronic medical problems,” Dr Khan says. “Patients can also access Medicare initiatives for subsidised Allied Health assistance and ECG on site.”

Centre helps our city to grow

Anyone looking to start a business in Wyndham or develop a commercial property in Werribee’s city centre is encouraged to visit Werribee Development Centre for advice and information.

“Werribee is the ‘Capital of Melbourne’s New West’ and the centre of Australia’s fastest growing region,” place manager of Wyndham city, Craig Toussaint says.

“This has created extraordinary opportunities for business growth and commercial development in the area.”

Wyndham City Council established Werribee Development Centre two years ago to promote and support the area’s growth and it’s the rst point of contact for development and business inquiries.

At the centre, visitors can nd out about what is planned for Werribee and discuss their next development or business venture with the dedicated specialist team.

With expertise in business development and planning, the team provides the latest information on Werribee city centre and east Werribee; holds presentations and V.I.P tours; can assist with site identi cation and selection; guide people through the planning process; provide relevant data that may assist a person’s operations and decision-making; and put business owners in touch with the right contacts.

“Werribee city centre and East Werribee are growing and have an unrivalled capacity of more than 900 hectares of land for development. This represents a unique

business and investment opportunity not comparable anywhere in Melbourne,” Toussaint says.

The centre of Werribee is home to more than 400 businesses and provides a dynamic commercial heart for the region and its growing customer and employment bases.

“Natural assets set Werribee’s city centre apart with Werribee River, Wyndham Park and Chirnside Park focal points for surrounding development.

“Picturesque waterways and parks will also feature in East Werribee, and as a project of state signi cance, the suburb will add a major new dimension to the local area and Melbourne’s west.”

Many businesses have already identi ed the opportunities Werribee offers.

“Wyndham city invites people to grow with us in Werribee: The Capital of Melbourne’s New West.”

Where fun times never stop

Family-owned recreational and sporting venue WynCity Bowl and Entertainment in Point Cook has something fun for everyone.

“We’re a family entertainment centre with recreational activities galore for the people of Wyndham and beyond,” managing director Edi De Pellegrin says.

“Whether you are six or 60, you will nd something to enjoy in our venue.”

WynCity is the ideal place for enjoying quality family time while entertaining the kids this winter with ten-pin bowling, laser tag, bumper cars, glow-in-the-dark mini golf, arcade machines and Australia’s rst ever “Time Freak” – a UV-themed game room with 3D props where patrons race against the clock to push buttons quickly as they light up.

There is also Venturer simulator, which offers a ride on a roller coaster, travel through a cartoon world or bomb-dodging –all virtual, of course. A playground provides an outdoor play option and there’s also a fully licensed café and restaurant.

“Our 24 lanes of International Qubica bowling equipment feature 42-inch monitors, iPad scoring with Facebook check-in, built-in cameras and are serviced by virtual waiters,” says De Pellegrin.

“Our Laserforce area gives guests an adrenalin-packed adventure with capacity for 24 people each mission and has awesome props, easy-to-use weapons and a pumping soundtrack.

“And we serve the best wood- red pizza in town.”

WynCity has been an iconic bowling and entertainment centre in Werribee for the past 30 years but recently moved to Point Cook to enable the business to expand.

The entertainment hub is spread over two levels and is ideal for children’s and adult parties, functions and corporate events with conference rooms available.

Hop into the ideal meeting place

If you need the perfect venue for a function, meeting or gathering, the new facilities at Hoppers Crossing Sports Club could be the answer.

Last year the sports club completed stage one of development on its state-of-the-art clubrooms, meetings and events centre.

When completed, the centre will provide a new family-friendly venue for the Wyndham sporting community.

The Hoppers Crossing Cricket Club and Hoppers Crossing Football Club moved to Moss el Reserve at Hogans Road in 1983 and the venue became the Hoppers Crossing Sports Club in 1992.

Today, the club is home to seven sporting organisations including cricket, netball, golf, darts and football codes.

“This development is the culmination of the extreme hard work of the club committee, its members and social clubs,” general manager George Csifo said.

“Our mission is to deliver excellence in sporting and social activities to our members, their guests and the local community by providing the very best facilities within our daily environment.

“We can help anybody planning a function and our staff is committed to providing the highest level of service to all their members, guests and the Wyndham community.”

This year’s charity golf day hosted by the club raised $6000, which was donated to the Open Family Wyndham division.

In the past year, the club has donated more than $29,000 to local and state charities and organisations, including the Cancer Council, Lions Club, Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute, Movember and local schools.

The club also awarded sponsorships of more than $81,000 to local communitybased sports clubs and volunteer organisations, taking the total of its contributions to more than $110,000.

Locals also enjoy great meals at the

club’s popular bistro, which opens for lunch and dinner services from Thursday to Saturday. Become a member of the Hoppers Crossing Sports Club for just $5 and try the new $13 lunch menu. Members get 10 per cent off food and beverages.

Where kids get V.I.P. treatment

Being able to choose exactly who cares for your child while you’re at work is something V.I.P Family Day Care proudly provides parents.

“We’re a exible child care option which allows parents to interview and choose the educator they feel best suits their needs,” says director Gail Sinopoli.

“Our educators go through a strict process before signing a contract and are quali ed and experienced in family and long day care.”

V.I.P Family Day Care has 85 educators across Wyndham who care for children in their own homes.

“We visit our educators unannounced to ensure the highest quality of care is given,” Sinopoli says.

“After families advise us care is starting, we make an additional visit to observe how the child is settling and provide this feedback to parents.”

Many parents use V.I.P Family Day Care services, including Samantha, of Werribee, and Elizabeth, of Truganina.

“My child has been in care for ve years with one of V.I.P’s carers,” Samantha says.

“My child has special needs and I nd V.I.P’s carer is 100 per cent accommodating to her needs, even undergoing [extra] training to help care for her.”

Elizabeth agrees with the quality of care.

“My girls have thrived in care with V.I.P,” she says. “They have made friends, learned so much and have con dence in themselves.

“I have nothing but the highest praise for my children’s carer.

“And her facilities are clean, neat and well maintained.”

V.I.P Family Day Care has been operating for almost eight years and was one of the rst family day care services to be approved in Wyndham.

“We’re more experienced than other new services and have passed our accreditation with ying colours,” Sinopoli says. There are vacancies at V.I.P. Family

Day Care in Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit, Williams Landing, Wyndham Vale and Truganina. Children can be placed in care within 24 hours of being registered.

Established in 1996, Platypus Junction is family-owned and operated with centres in Mt Eliza, Mentone and Montmorency and one opening in Point Cook next month.

The family-focused centre offers early learning for children from three months to ve years of age.

“We also believe children learn best in an aesthetic environment with lots of natural experiences and with educators who meet and foster the children’s interests and developmental needs.

“It’s what Platypus Junction is all about.”

A wide range of wonderful toys, books, materials, resources and indoor and outdoor play equipment is used to deliver the centre’s culturally rich, diverse and relevant program.

Platypus Junction also offers a three-year-old kindergarten program and a government-funded four-year-old kinder with quali ed kindergarten educators.

It’s based on the National Quality Framework (NQF), which requires each child to have 15 hours of contact with a quali ed teacher each week.

The program emphasises growing self-con dence, self-esteem, problem-solving skills and independence while having fun.

Quality steel, robust service

Many people are keen to support reliable local businesses. Sunshine Roofmart is one such company.

“We are part of a large national network which has more than 25 branches spread across every state and territory,” manager Paul Hibbard says.

“While we enjoy the significant competitive benefits that come with being part of a large national organisation, we are based locally, which means we truly understand the Melbourne and Victorian markets.

Vegies galore and direct to you

Sachi Rudolph knows the importance of teaching people how food gets from pasture to plate.

She left life in Southbank and moved to Werribee South with her farmer husband two years ago and set up a fruit and vegetable shop called FarmFresh2u.

“With such an abundance of fresh fruit and veg right here in your own backyard, you’d have to be crazy to shop anywhere else,” she says.

“Grown right here on our farm and neighbouring farms, we sell fresh baby cos lettuce, silverbeet, baby silverbeet, lemons, fennel, garlic, red and green capsicums, chillis, oranges, apples, spring onions, onions, jap, jarra and butternut pumpkin, brown onions, red onions, pears, truss tomatoes, local eggs, asparagus, kale and figs direct to public.”

FarmFresh2u also offers locally grown cauliflower, celery, artichoke, green cabbage, red cabbage, savoy, broccoli, broccolini and baby cauliflower.

And then there are bananas, kiwi fruit, seedless watermelon, mandarins, avocado, mangoes, pineapple and passionfruit, organic orange juice and organic lemons straight from the tree.

While customers can buy produce directly from the people who grow it, children are encouraged to visit the Rudolphs’ farm and try healthy food for free.

“The kids can come down and see the process and how we grow all the healthy fruit and vegies,” Sachi says.

“I want to supply our local community with fresh produce and educate them on what they’re eating at the same time.”

Every week, the Rudolphs donate left-over fruit and vegetables and as much

as other farmers in the area are willing to give, to Ozharvest – a charity that distributes fresh produce to people in need all over Melbourne.

“We take so much for granted here in Australia and I think people turn a blind eye because they don’t see the poverty,” Sachi says.

To thank farmFresh2u customers there will be a free sausage sizzle this Saturday from 12pm-2pm.

College kids take it as read

The independent reading program at Hoppers Crossing Secondary College is fostering a love of literature among the school’s younger pupils.

It has transformed students’ reading habits and led to outstanding improvement in their reading levels.

Literacy at the college is delivered as a stand-alone program outside of the formal English curriculum.

Principal Wayne Terrill invested college funding into the purchase of hundreds of books and dedicated two teachers to every literacy class.

Years 7, 8 and 9 literacy teachers were recently asked to nominate a student from each class who had demonstrated the greatest improvement in literacy from the beginning of the year

Dylan Camilleri (year 7), Jagveer Singh (year 8) and Ruth Haleyesus (year 9) were identified as the most improved in their year levels and each won an Android tablet.

All nominees were presented with awards at a special morning tea on June 24.

Nominees had to keep a reading log, read at home and at school, actively contribute to class discussion or group work to show improved understanding of comprehension strategies, choose challenging texts and set smart goals.

Assistant principal Rod Kendall, who was appointed to the college in 2009 to lead the literacy program, is overwhelmed at what the students have achieved.

“I’m really proud of the work our students are putting into their reading. It’s just part of our lives at the college,” he says.

Parent forums are hosted regularly as a way of keeping them in touch with what the school is doing.

The next parent forum entitled Help, I’m about to have a teenager!, will focus on the difficulties of raising teenagers and will be delivered by parenting authority Michael Grose. It will be on August 5 at 7pm.

Culture of harmony at school

Students at Werribee Secondary College are bringing the school halls alive with the sound of music, thanks to a thriving arts program.

The college has a strong tradition of student participation in music education and its program has been developed over many years.

Its ensembles include three concert bands, jazz band, two string orchestras, ve choirs, a guitar ensemble, a Latin guitar ensemble and brass ensemble as well as several student-run ensembles.

Tuition is offered for woodwind, brass, string, percussion, piano, guitar and vocals.

The program involves students purposefully making music and develops understanding and awareness of music from various times, places and cultures.

“Our broad program encourages students to acquire control in music making through learning appropriate performance techniques and enjoy the sharing of music as a key life skill,” director of music Regina Mendes-Joachim says.

The music program is one of the tools the school uses to cross boundaries as Wyndham’s international secondary college.

All students regardless of ethnicity, economic resources or capabilities are offered the opportunity to participate in and experience the excitement of making music.

“We take great pride in enabling all students to reach their potential. All ensembles are socially inclusive, free from discrimination, and violence and allow equitable access to resources,” Mendes-Joachim says.

“The sense of belonging that participation in music at Werribee Secondary College brings about … enables

students across year levels to mingle and unite towards a common goal.”

Student engagement has resulted in more than 100 students from year 9 through to VCE electing to complete further studies in music and more than 300 students are involved in the various ensembles.

The program has outgrown its buildings and plans are under way for more classrooms at the college, including a state of the art performance centre capable of seating an audience of 250.

Faith in students’ potential

Students at Good News Lutheran College are preparing to lead a life less ordinary through educational, personal and spiritual development.

The college delivers strong Christian values and a belief in the teachings of Jesus Christ; the substance upon which the college has built a quality education program for nearly 20 years.

Principal Simon Hughes believes every student at the college has their own unique gifts and abilities, and each of them has their own valuable contribution to make.

Growth in enrolments and a community need for continued Christian education allowed the college to start its first year 10 classes this year. Next year small VCE classes and a fourth prep stream will be introduced.

“Our college prepares students by assisting them in becoming responsible, contributing members of the college, church and wider community,” Hughes says.

The curriculum in middle and senior school covers a range of subjects drawn from each of the key learning areas selected for Victorian students.

Students also participate in Christian studies, chapel and well-being sessions, reinforcing the core values and Christian ethos of the college.

Various extracurricular programs including sports carnivals, leadership programs, debating, camping, community events, discovery challenges, musicals and arts evenings are available.

There is also a food technology room, an indoor gymnasium and purpose-built facilities for science, art, design and manual construction including woodwork

and metal work. “Our teachers are dedicated in providing a structured learning process which will enable our students to continue growth in the spiritual, intellectual, physical, cultural, social and emotional areas of their lives,” Hughes says.

The college also has the support of a college pastor, who is a minister of St Philip’s Lutheran Church, Werribee. Prospective students are invited to become part of the Good News community in an environment that supports students

Adios to boring language classes

It may come as a surprise when you enter the grounds at Wyndham Central College that many of the students may greet you with a friendly “Hola!”

The school already runs three popular Spanish language classes and from next year will look to begin a full-immersion program where students will learn up to half of their curriculum in Spanish.

Spanish teacher Alex De-Leon says Latin American pop-culture has been a main driver for students wanting to take up the language course.

“We’ve had a lot of Latin American pop stars come and visit Australia, like Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin, and the kids enjoy the music,” he said. “There has also been quite a lot of in uence from movies.

“As teachers, we try to make learning Spanish as fun as we can and the students realise it’s not a dif cult language to learn.

“There has been quite a lot of interest already for next year’s program.”

De-Leon, physical education teacher Daniel Pearce, humanities teacher Ray Sherriff and mathematics teacher Lillibeth Lee will teach up to half of their lessons in Spanish as part of the full immersion program.

To be selected for the program, students will be required to sit an exam and have an interview.

“These students will be the cream of the crop, De-Leon said.

“Having a second language is always an advantage and most of the students interested in this program are very academic.

“They have ambitions to go on and study at university and a lot of courses require a second language. Later on this may mean

they’re not limited to a career in Australia.”

To drum up interest in the 2015 year 7 Spanish course, De-Leon organised mini expos and worked extensively with primary schools in the area that feed into Wyndham Central College and some have now

committed to teaching the language.

Principal Julie Myers said staff were committed to delivering a rigorous and challenging curriculum, while the provision of $16 million government funding for the whole school master plan would provide

outstanding facilities the students and teachers deserved.

A place to learn all about life

MacKillop College in Werribee encourages individuals to reach their full potential as life-long learners by providing an innovative, challenging and collaborative learning and teaching environment.

Rory Kennedy, the college’s principal for 30 years, strives to ensure his leadership style is in accordance with the mission of the Catholic Church.

“Our vision statement is ‘Celebrating all life, Challenging all people, Dreaming the new day’,” Kennedy says.

“I lead the MacKillop community in accordance with our vision and mission statements, which encompass pastoral care and faith development.

“I also lead the planning of the college’s financial and future objectives.

“We’re a Catholic school with gospel values that are lived out here every day through our faith commitment to Jesus.

“Parents are looking for a place that’s safe and where there’s a joy of learning and we’re known for being that place.

“We have a beautiful environment with state-of-the-art facilities.

“Students are supported in becoming active, self-sufficient and engaged learners.”

The pathways available to senior students continue to diversify, with MacKillop introducing the SEDA sport development partnership program.

From years 7-10, a strong core and elective program establishes good learning and study practices.

Senior students are offered an impressive array of more than 40 Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) subjects.

There are also alternative pathways through Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) and Vocational Education and Training (VET) certificates.

MacKillop has a dedicated year 9 campus at St Mary’s Werribee South and a select-entry vocational pathways program for year 10 students.

The individual needs program offers a contemporary ‘gifted and talented curriculum’ and support to students who experience learning difficulties.

A contemporary and flexible learning environment are continuing developments.

Future planning includes the building of a chapel to further nurture education in faith and additional learning spaces to expand and complement the college’s existing facilities.

Equipping kids for life

Parents wanting to send their children to a Catholic co-educational school rich in facilities and choices in Melbourne’s west will find Thomas Car College in Tarneit meets those needs.

“We are a warm and welcoming community who take heart in knowing all our pupils and where each student is valued and spirituality nurtured,” principal Dr Andrew Watson says.

“As a Catholic school we meet the educational needs of families.

‘‘We recognise change as a positive and provide our students with the confidence and skills to become future leaders.”

The college is updating its facilities, with the first stage of a $22 million building program complete. The first stage included a $7 million state-of-the-art learning centre for year 7 and 8 students.

Year 9 students follow the iD9 program, a new tailored curriculum that includes a week’s city experience and a country experience at the college’s refurbished Good Samaritan Country Campus at Coragulac, 11 kilometres from Colac.

Thomas Carr has also partnered with Australian Catholic University since 2012, providing year 12 students with the opportunity to study first-year subjects for a bachelor of education, nursing, midwifery or paramedicine.

The college’s $3 million trade training centre will be completed this year.

The centre will offer certificate II and III courses in carpentry furniture-making, brick and block laying, expanding to plumbing in 2015.

“The new facility will have the latest in technology, a well-resourced workshop and learning studios,’’ Watson says.

‘‘It will be open to all students living in Wyndham.

‘‘The addition of the trade training centre ensures the college continues to provide a variety of different pathways through senior secondary schooling.’’

Parents and future students can visit the college and take a guided tour during open days on Thursday, October 23 and in February 2015.

For future events and news, visit the college’s website.

The importance of being learners

The future of Wyndham, the west, and indeed anywhere, is youth.

Wyndham and Hobsons Bay Local Learning and Employment Network – or WynBay LLEN – works for the betterment of youth.

Statistics show that one in five young people leave school early, with associated negative effects on further education, training and employment.

The network was established in 2001 as an independent incorporated association of members involved in the education, training and employment advancement of young people in Wyndham and Hobsons Bay.

WynBay LLEN is part of a network of 31 local learning and employment networks across Victoria funded by the state government to support their objective that 94 per cent of all young people will achieve year 12 or its equivalent by 2015.

Its pivotal role has been to act as a regional strategic and facilitation body, bringing together local government regions to collaboratively contribute to improving the education, training and employment outcomes for local young people.

WynBay LLEN also has a particular focus on young people who are at risk of disengaging, or who have already disengaged from education and training and are not in meaningful employment.

To this end, the network is contracted to broker strategic, sustainable partnerships that support improved education and transition outcomes for young people, including increasing year 12 or equivalent attainment rates.

The network uses its knowledge of the region to influence strategic planning and broker partnerships among key stakeholders

to improve education outcomes and support young people to remain engaged, or re-engage, in education or training and realise their full social and economic potential.

Vocational Education and Training in Schools clusters brokered and facilitated by WynBay LLEN this year is helping 1420 local students access Certificate I II & III training in local schools in a wide variety of subjects.

WynBay LLEN has assisted over 4000 local young people over the last 4 years in VET. It is all part of our plan to keep young people engagedin

or reengaged back into learning.

WynBay LLEN is a local independent and incorporated

A trusted advocate for young people.

The partnerships established exist for the benefit of young people across all government, Catholic and other non-government education and training sectors.

Complete health care for all

It’s well-known that Australians are ghting the “battle of the bulge”. A great place to start combating these weight issues is at Derrimut Road Health Clinic in Tarneit, where a tailored weight-loss program is proving successful with patients, practice manager Leigh Stevenson says.

“The weight-loss program allows patients, from children to adults, to individually see our professional staff and develop a program tailored to their immediate needs – and it’s bulk-billed,” Stevenson says.

The clinic has been open for more than three years and has on-site pathology; a podiatrist; two psychologists, one specialising in children; an exercise physiologist and physiotherapy facilities; a dietitian; dentist and weight-loss clinic.

“Derrimut Road Health Clinic provides complete health care, including chronic disease management, children’s immunisations, men’s and women’s health, small procedures and skin checks. They are all bulk-billed.

“We will soon be introducing a chemist to the clinic to make it a practice which caters to even more of our patients’ needs,” Stevenson says.

The clinic’s doctors come from different backgrounds and speak a variety of languages, including Tamil, Malay, Bengali, Urdu, Filipino and Tongan.

“Our doctors are personable, friendly and committed to bringing the best possible medical assistance to Wyndham families. Our reception team is highly skilled and friendly too.”

With 10 doctors at the clinic patients have less wait time for appointments and the choice of who they would like to see.

“Families can establish themselves with a regular GP rather than having to see the next available doctor. We see our patients as more than just a number.”

Patients won’t have to struggle with parking either because there is plenty on-site.

HOMES AND LAND – Porter Davis – World of Style

Not everyone has the interior designer touch so decorating a house can prove daunting. Porter Davis has come up with a solution to this with an online quiz to help people understand which interior styles work well and also appeal to their personalities.

Porter Davis director Paul Wolff said the quiz was created by design experts to provide professional guidance on designing the perfect house interior.

“It can be a valuable exercise to de ne style preferences so people don’t end up

wanting to restyle their décor months after moving in or replace expensive furniture and accessories.

“The quick quiz can help to start the style conversation between partners so there isn’t a con icting set of objectives going on inside the house,” Mr Wolff said.

He added that the bene t of understanding and de ning fundamental style preferences applies to home owners, tenants and investors as everyone wants to create a space that is attractive and an expression of who they are.

“We advise people to opt for interiors that are somewhat adaptable.

“This can mean choosing a more neutral colour palette and adding art, lighting, accessories and trinkets to personalise their space.”

To demonstrate this, the Porter Davis design portfolio ‘World of Style’ is split into four primary themes: Resort, Classic, Contemporary and Designer.

“Within these four themes we add elements to create more speci c interior styles. For example, within the resort

portfolio we have 16 different styles, from the Whitsundays to Jamaica and Ubud in Bali to the British Virgin Isles.

“They offer entirely different end results but all with the resort undertone.”

’Scray stayer is a hockey master

Julie-Anne Sheehan is set to become the third woman in the history of the Footscray Hockey Club to reach the magical 500-game mark.

Sheehan took the unconventional route, not unwrapping a hockey stick under the Christmas tree as a primary schooler, nor wielding one for her high school team as a teen. Heck, she hadn’t even seen a hockey game live before her 20s.

It was not until she met then boyfriend and now husband Brendan that she stumbled upon a sport that would become her passion.

“I didn’t have much of a sporting background,” Sheehan said.

“Brendan didn’t play until he was an adult either … [and that] was only because his little brother was playing.

“He and I ended up becoming life members at the club.”

Sheehan is exactly the type of person the Bulldogs want involved in their club.

She might not be blessed with eye-catching stick skills, but she makes up for it with her erce desire to compete.

“I’ve prided myself on endeavour rather than skill,” she said.

Sheehan is more than just a player; the 57-year-old is a club life member, former captain, committee member, junior coach and now a state representative.

e club has a thriving junior set-up and its men’s and women’s teams feature in the Hockey Victoria premier league.

Equally important to the club is its masters teams.

e Bulldogs encourage rst timers, no matter what age, to pick up a stick and have a go – just as Sheehan did in her 20s.

“I was just a kid who had a dancing background but liked running and hadn’t really played any team sports,” the primary school teacher said.

“ at’s the beauty of hockey as a sport; it’s never too late to start.

“In my case, I was watching a boyfriend who became a husband play, then someone said, ‘Do you want to have a run?’

“Of course, it was all foreign to me, with no

background into the sport as a kid … I hadn’t even seen a hockey game.”

Sheehan’s highlight has been getting the chance to play alongside her daughter, Ally, in a premiership win. Both mother and daughter scored a goal in that grand nal.

“Premierships were highlights – I’ve played in quite a few over the years,” Sheehan said.

“ e one that stood out was a winning premiership with my daughter – that was

a great thrill.” Sheehan could not have envisaged her career would lead to Victorian representation. at call-up came in the masters at the ripe age of 56. “It was very exciting getting a Big V singlet and shirt, and a Victorian tracksuit,” she said. “It proves that you’re never too old!” Sheehan will play her 500th game in the Footscray masters side against Toorak-East Malvern at Footscray on Wednesday from 9pm.

Devils chase fast track to play-off berth

Werribee Devils can lock up a Big V basketball women’s division 1 play-off berth at their first attempt if they can overcome Hawthorn Magic at the Werribee Sports and Fitness Centre on Saturday night.

Even with a loss, the Devils may still go through on head-to-head records – but that’s not a risk coach Lloyd Klaman is willing to take.

“I just want to win on Saturday night and sit backandwatchthescoresfromtheothergames on Sunday and see where everybody else falls,” he said. “I don’t care whether we finish second, third or fourth; we’ve beaten every team in the league, so we know on our day we’re good enough.”

e Devils had to snap out of a rough patch to have their destiny back in their own hands

in the final round of the regular season. A er losing back-to-back games, they enjoyed a 70-43 win over Camberwell Dragons in a Sunday stroll at Balwyn High School.

When the going got tough, the bigs got going for the Devils, with Lisa Troyahn and Jodi Impey propelling their team to victory.

Troyahn led the team with 23 points and 11 rebounds, while Impey had eight and 12.

Elisha Burnette, having been forced to sit out all basketball-related activities for two games due to breathing difficulties, received the green light from doctors to make her return.

Burnette is one of the team leaders and a key member of the back court, so teammates and supporters were understandably chuffed when they saw her don a Devils singlet again.

She made a telling impact in each of the

double-header games at the weekend. e Devils were beaten 65-54 by the Southern Peninsula Sharks in the earlier game.

In the men’s championship, Werribee Devils were beaten twice on a double-header weekend, stretching their losing streak to three.

Import Aaron McCuin had double doubles in both games, but the Devils still lost 88-69 to the Sherbrooke Suns on Saturday night and 88-82 to the Diamond Valley Eagles on Sunday. eDevils’finalgamewillbeathomeagainst McKinnon Cougars on Sunday from 3pm.

Academy of dreams

Sport is more than a game at Manor Lakes P-12 College.

e school’s Vocational Education and Training (VET) sport and recreation athlete development program has students treating it more as a career pathway than a Saturday pastime.

Physical education teacher Peter Walsh, who grew up locally, noticed a gaping hole for students with elite sporting talents and those yearning for a future within the sports and recreation industry.

“I grew up in Wyndham and sport wasn’t something that was fostered by schools in the Werribee area,” he said.

“I wanted to give kids in Wyndham a chance to have that opportunity.”

e VET program strikes a balance between sports and physical development and academic endeavours.

e success of students in a pilot program three years ago led to the school making it an ongoing part of its curriculum.

“Our first 16 students have gone on to be successful both academically and sportingwise,” Walsh said.

Manor Lakes has formed an allegiance with Victoria University, allowing students access to elite training facilities.

ose involved in the program also have guaranteed entry to a course at VU upon completion of their secondary studies.

“VU’s sports science program is second only to the AIS, I would guess,” Walsh said.

“ e kids have been able to do VO2 max [maximal oxygen uptake testing]; they’ve been able to do altitude training.

“Some of the things they’ve been able to do, you wouldn’t be able to do it in the classroom.”

Leadership is a key component of the program, with students coaching teams in younger age levels. e practice is helping build

a good culture within the school, the aim being that it be passed on to future generations.

“ e [student leaders] coach junior basketball, football and netball teams and help the teachers out as well, as it might not be their area of expertise,” Walsh said.

“ ey also work at our own school athletics carnival and the district athletics and swimming carnivals.

‘‘ ey’re doing a lot of work with kids across the region.’’

Some students involved are part of the Western Jets’ multicultural squad, including Duom Dawam, an AIS-AFL scholarship holder who recently featured in the AFL under-18 national championships.

“We realise that we’ve got a high percentage of African kids in Wyndham,” Walsh said.

“ ese kids have extreme athletic talent and it’s now being fostered.

‘‘ eysee[thesportsandrecreationfield]asa pathway they can take.”

IN THE DOGHOUSE

Ԃ Many footy followers in the west expected the WYN FM caravan to be rocking when I went head-to-head with Deer Park Football Club sponsor Glenn Allison before the match of the day at Spotswood last Saturday. Social media has fuelled a so-called war between me and Deer Park even though, as I’ve written before, it’s absolute rubbish. I don’t care how much Deer Park spends on its senior players and I don’t care where the money comes from. My opinion is that money will see the demise of suburban clubs, as player payments at grassroots level are higher than ever. Glenn was at pains to say that the club is paying “unders” for some of its high-profile ex-AFL players, as Glenn Houlihan walked in the front door because he opened a restaurant in the area; Brent Guerra wanted to play with brother Luke; and Ryan Hargrave plays for less than he was offered by two other WRFL clubs. It’s great to see former AFL-listed players playing in the WRFL ... it’s just a pity for the competition they all play at the one club. But I’m not at war with the Deer Park club or anybody connected to the club.

Ԃ Former Bulldogs star Jose Romero made an appearance in the Victory Room at Etihad Stadium before the Bulldogs’ clash with the Bombers on Sunday and a popular appearance it was. Bulldogs faithful gave him a rousing cheer and it was great to hear him talk about his genuine excitement about the up-and-coming young Bulldogs players. He told the room not to have unreal expectations and that even if they lost against Essendon to see how much they’d improved. Jose’s football involvement these days is watching son Michael, a very promising 15-year-old who the Dogs have already taken under their wing. Michael is already as tall as his dad and, from all reports, is a great prospect.

Ԃ Gordon Casey, the former Bulldogs back pocket champion, is a familiar face at local footy. He’s often seen at his old stamping ground, Parkside, watching the boys go around or at Hoppers Crossing where he’s a premiership coach. “Case” was at Etihad last week and spoke in the sponsors room about the good old days playing under EJ Whitten and the ‘pleasant Sunday mornings’ – a couple of laps and a couple of beers followed by a couple more beers.

Reds won’t rest in quest for

Hoppers Crossing is eager to maintain its ruthless streak en route to an expected Football Federation Victoria men’s State League 4 West title.

e Reds’ only blemish, if you could call it that, was a drawn game with Sebastopol in round 13.

ey have collected 40 of a possible 42 points this season to sit 10 points clear on top of the table and are the unbackable favourites to claim the premiership.

But Reds captain Kevin Smart says his team won’t be content until it breaks new ground.

“We set a target at the start of the year to try and win every game and that went out the window, so our goal now is to not lose

a game,” he said. “I won’t be satisfied and I know a lot of the players won’t be satisfied if we win the league and sort of slacken off.

‘‘We want to set a points record for the club.”

e Reds overcame a tricky obstacle in the Brimbank Stallions at Grange Reserve on Saturday.

e Stallions drew first blood, but a headed Tom Orndahl goal, served up by a neat cross from Zia Sherzai, restored parity at half-time.

e game was not in the Reds’ keeping until five minutes from time when a glancing header from Khalil Assaad a er a cross from Dane Garbett found the back of the net.

e 2-1 win was a triumphant return for

unbeaten season

Assaad, playing his first game in more than a month a er a calf injury.

Smart believes the challenges will get tougher for his team the longer the season wears on.

“We’ve got a target on our back,” he said. “Everyone wants that first scalp of beating us.”

In other games, Point Cook was no match for promotion chasers Melbourne City, going down 4-0 at Saltwater Reserve.

e Jets fell a spot to seventh on the ladder a er the heavy loss.

In State League 5 West, Truganina Hornets’ title aspirations suffered a blow with a disappointing 3-1 loss to Lara on the road at Lara Recreation Reserve.

Tigers keen to seal deal

It’s time for Werribee Districts to go all in, push the chips to the middle of the table and lock up second spot in Western Region Football League’s division 1.

eTigerscanallbutsecureatop-twofinish in their first season back in the competition with a victory against St Albans on the road at Kings Park Reserve on Saturday.

Finishing second or third is neither here nor there, as both teams get the luxury of a double chance and will face off in the first week of the finals. But it would be a just reward for what coach Wade Chapman and his players have brought to the WRFL this season.

e Tigers opened up a six-point break over third-placed Spotswood with a hard-fought 11-point win over Altona at Soldiers Reserve on Saturday, and gaining four points against the Saints should be enough for them to stave off the Woodsmen.

e Tigers face two of the bottom three clubs in the competition – Albion and Yarraville-Seddon – in the run home, games you would bet on them winning. at would leave them needing only one win from their

other two road tests against St Albans and Spotswood.

If you’re the Tigers, you don’t want to roll the dice in a penultimate round showdown against Spotswood.

“It’s going to a good preparation for the finals,” assistant coach Marty Porter said.

“ ose sides are certainly up and about. It will be a really good challenge for us to see if we can match it with those teams on their home turf.”

e Tigers’ past month was mirrored by their hot-and-cold performance against Altona at the weekend.

eir first half was pure silk, with their renowned running game in full gear to take a 31-point lead into half-time.

“All of the key areas that we value were pointing in the right direction,” Porter said.

“We were working hard both ways.”

e second half was far from satisfactory, letting a hungry Altona side back in the game.

e Vikings booted six goals to two in the third term and made a last quarter run before falling short 13. 14 (92) to 13.3 (81).

e Tigers’ tendency to switch off for periods is a worry heading into the finals.

“[It’s] probably because they’re a younger group … we just have lapses of concentration,” Porter said. “It’s an area that we need to keep working on.”

Chris Molivas is shaping as one of the X-factors for the Tigers.

Molivas booted five goals against the Vikings, making it 17 in three games, but he’s far from a one-trick pony.

“His form over the past month has been very impressive,” Porter said.

“Although he’s played most of the season up forward, he’s quite versatile and has the ability to run through the midfield and go down back as well.

“He’sabitofanathlete:goodoverhead, good at ground level and can be a running-type player and link up by hand.”

Travis Dean was the standout midfielder, whileco-captainBrentMorrowtookanumber of telling marks in defence. Ruckman Tate McCutcheon was dominant aerially when the game was on the line, and the dead-eye Ryan Harrington put the game out of reach of the visitors with five goals.

WRFL scoreboard, page 116

e Hornets have slipped three points behind ladder leader Spring Hills FC. e lone goal came from through Sebastian Gudelj.

It will be a quiet weekend in State League 4, with just two games being played on a weekend reserved for catch-up games.

e Reds will be among those in action, facing Altona North at Duane Reserve on Saturday.

Check out our action gallery from Point Cook’s defeat to Melbourne City at www.wyndham.starweekly.com.au.

Hockey

Werribee had six individual goalscorers in a 6-0 rout of Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School in the Hockey Victoria women’s Vic League 2 on Saturday. The Tigers had plenty of attacking options, with Laura Baker, Shannon Healand, Lisa Ross, Morgan Jolly, Jodie Dumbleton and Gabrielle van Dam getting in on the action. It wasn’t as much fun for the men’s Vic League 2 side, with the Tigers pummelled 4-1 by top dogs Kew. Youngster Jayden Street took over the white board with coach Ryan Tout away on representative duties.

VAFA

Westbourne Grammarians led Chadstone a merry dance in a 206-point shellacking in Victorian Amateur Football Association division 4. The Warriors booted 14 goals to one in the first half and planted the foot on the accelerator with 18 goals to one in the second half. Justin Johns booted six goals, Justin Ray kicked five and Chris Sneddon and Brenden Miller chimed in with four apiece. The Warriors are fifth on the ladder, a game out of the top four.

Cycling

Defending champion Dom Dudkiewicz was made to earn Footscray Cycling Club’s road race title by a challenging 90km circuit that started at Little River and wound its way through the Brisbane Ranges before a tricky sprint into Kirksbridge. Dudkiewicz didn’t like the idea of relinquishing the coveted number one, taking the win and securing the title for another year. “I’m honoured to be the club road champ again,” he said. “I love the history of this club, I love racing with Footscray and I’m not going anywhere.”

Football

Werribee Centrals face an uphill task to reach the Geelong and District Football League finals. The Centurions are two games out of the top five, with four games remaining, after a 22-point loss to fifth-placed Winchelsea at Galvin Park. Visit www. wyndham.starweekly.com.au for an online gallery from Saturday’s game.

Soccer

Werribee City is stuck in a rut in the National Premier League. The Bees surrendered 3-1 to Northcote City at Galvin Park on Sunday. The Bees have lost five straight games since June 15, with a goal difference of -14. They have a chance to snap out of their funk against lower-ranked Ballarat Red Devils at home on Sunday.

Sport shorts
Wade Chapman and his Werribee Districts side will aim to defend second spot in the last month of the season. (Wayne Hawkins)

Ask the Coach

Is the team playing the style of footy you want them to?

Pretty much, just not 120 minutes worth. They are playing how we want them to play but there are just little lapses that happen. Those couple of losses we had, we just became a bit conservative. We just went into our shell a little bit. I am probably looking for some individual improvement. If I went through the team I would be saying this bloke needs to improve in these areas, and this player here. We need that to happen and we need the players to take ownership and responsibility for that improvement. We will continue to educate them as a group but we need the players to join the dots and say I need to get better in this area, that’s where I think we are at the moment.

Do you have to temper your expectations because you are dealing with part time footballers ?

No not really. Because I have coached at local level and TAC Cup level in the part time environment I am pretty clear on what my expectations are. That why we have gone back to two night a week this month because I realize the players are working fulltime and we need to freshen them up. We will go back to three nights a week in August and hopefully go into September and a finals campaign with the players in as good a physical and mental state as they can possibly be. I am very aware of the part time environment and I don’t think I am unrealistic in what I expect.

Is there a place in your game plan for players to show a bit of flair?

Yes there is, without a doubt. They can have flair and take the game on, but they can’t be undisciplined. They can’t be trying to take a mark from eight deep or run in and pick the ball up one handed and come out the other side and do a blind turn. There is room for creativity as long as it is in the skill set of the player. You have to know your limitations. You can “Ask the Coach.”

Team adds to party vibe

With the inaugural Werribee Football Club Hall of Fame dinner taking place to coincide with the club’s 50th anniversary celebrations last Saturday night, it was always going to be an unforgettable weekend for those with black and gold running through their veins, irrespective of the results earlier in the day.

But the Werribee players made it an extra-special occasion with victories over the Northern Blues in the VFL seniors and AFL development league on their trip to Visy Park.

“ e whole playing group attended the function,” Tigers coach John Lamont said.

“For them to all attend it as winners was really pleasing. It really added to the night.”

Also critical in the context of the season was the senior side’s 29-point win.

e Tigers returned to the top four and ended a frustrating month of inconsistent form with their 11.18 (84) to 8.7 (55) win.

e only black mark was their wayward kicking for goal. But at least they had 29 scoring shots, compared to 10 a week earlier, in a more complete performance.

“I was more pleased with our consistency compared to the previous week and other weeks,” Lamont said.

“We were a little bit inaccurate in front of goal.

‘‘We’ve kicked 11.18 and only two of them were rushed and there were a number of kickable goals that we missed.

“ ere was a few of them early, where we could’ve had some greater ascendancy at the stage in the game.

“I just thought generally our pressure levels were pretty good.”

e Tigers got the better of the midfield arm wrestle, with Jarred Moore, Tom Gribble, Jye Bolton and Sam Martyn prominent.

Dan Currie, in his first game back from injury, threw himself into the big-man contests in an interesting battle with Robert Warnock,

Currie’s aerial presence around the ground was vital for the Tigers.

Led by Brody Mihocek and Michael Sodamaco, the Tigers were resolute defensively, keeping the Blues to a manageable 15 scoring shots. Sodamaco tamed AFL regular Jeffrey Garlett.

In attack, Addam Maric booted four goals. But he missed out on a really big outing, converting less than 50 per cent of his nine shots.

Mason Wood snared three and was happy to provide a leading target.

e Tigers have two weeks to lap up the feel-good factor from the Hall of Fame event and the pair of wins before a huge game against Port Melbourne at Avalon Airport Oval on August 2.

Program starts 26th July Saturday 1pm. Registrations open from 12:30pm. Net Set Go! Regsitation forms can be downloaded at http://www.wyndhamna.vic.netball.com.au

Kia on track with this tidy hatch

e Kia Rio is a great little car for its teeny price tag, but for a few extra thousand dollars you can gain premium features in the top-ofthe-range SLi model, which still represents pretty good value for money.

Like most of the Kia range, the Rio is a great-looking car from all angles with widespread appeal that you don’t always get with small hatches.

e overall interior design is also pleasing to the eye, although – despite enhancements to the SLi décor – there’s still a bit of cheap plastic at the bottom of the door trims and centre console. But I guess these keep costs down while catering for extras such as 17-inch alloywheels(inachoiceofpatterns),automatic headlights and LED daytime lamps.

One feature I particularly like is the static cornering lamps, which shine in the direction you point your steering wheel. It’s quite a handy feature which I’m surprised isn’t on more cars.

Other standard features in the Rio SLi include a six-function trip computer, cruise control, surround-sound audio, six airbags including side curtains, electronic stability control, climate control, bluetooth and USB functionality for phone and media with steering wheel controls.

is car is pretty roomy, though rear legroom can be a bit tight. e front seats, with their six settings, are comfortable. ere’s plenty of storage in the cabin and the rear cargo space is decent despite accommodating a spare 17-inch alloy wheel.

e ride isn’t the most refined, but it does what you ask with little fuss.

e SLi’s 1.6-litre direct injection engine is pretty big for its class and makes you think you’re driving a bigger car.

e six-speed manual I drove had a nice feel, as did the steering, which made negotiating bends an enjoyable experience.

It’s easy to see why the Rio is Kia’s biggest seller and why it’s more than holding its own against stiff small-car competition such as the Holden Barina, Ford Fiesta and Mazda 2.

Mini replica has real feel Time to start dropping hints for Father’s Day. LEGO has released an accurate replica of the original Mini Cooper (pictured) in its Creator Expert series. The model comes in British Racing Green, white roof and engine bonnet stripes and even the transversely mounted four-cylinder engine and picnic basket in the luggage compartment. Exclusive online sales at shop.LEGO. com start on August 1. The doors, bonnet and tailgate of the Mini Cooper can be opened, providing a view of other precisely replicated details. The four-cylinder engine is, of course, transversely mounted; the steering wheel, gear lever, handbrake handle, backrests and headrests are all movable, and in the luggage compartment there’s a fully packed picnic basket with a chequered blanket. The hard part will be convincing the kids that this is not a toy!

VW thumbs up for Chattanooga There has been a lot of talk about Australia’s wages being too high to sustain a car industry, though that hasn’t stopped vehicle manufacturing in the UK and United States. So much so that Volkswagen has decided to award the production of a new midsize SUV to the Chattanooga plant in Tennessee. The group will invest about $US900 million in production of a yet-to-be-named, seven-passenger SUV, creating 2000 jobs.

Nissan winner lands in Australia

The all-new Nissan QASHQAI, the next generation DUALIS, is now available in Australia, further strengthening the brand’s SUV line-up. The award-winning QASHQAI (we have no idea how it’s pronounced) is one of Nissan’s most successful models, with more than two million sold globally since the previous generation debuted in 2007. The UK-built cross-over vehicle has been a massive sales success and was recently awarded the What Car? Car of the Year 2014 prize. It will be available in four different variants with 2.0L petrol engine and a 1.8L turbo diesel. Prices are expected to start at $28,949

Audi cabriolet arrives

The new Audi A3 Cabriolet has arrived in Australia with all-new design, powerful and ef cient new engines, dynamic quattro drivetrain and a new electric folding roof that retracts in 18 seconds at speeds of up to 50km/h. The stylish new coupe-like design has been modelled from the ground-up and features sporty proportions and strong lines such as the prominent shoulder line that extends along the entire length of the car. The new model is longer, lower and wider than its predecessor. There are variants – 1.4L, 1.8L and 2.0L – with prices starting at $47,300.

Big Plus for Honda

Honda Australia has introduced a limited edition CR-V Plus+ that’s available in two- and four-wheel drive with automatic transmissions and metallic paint. Based on the existing VTi, it has 18-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, front and rear parking sensors and rain-sensing wipers. Prices start at $30,790.

A Merc of meagre thirst

A Mercedes-Benz E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID has travelled the 1968 kilometres from Tangier in North Africa to Goodwood in England without having to refuel – with enough fuel for another 160 kilometres to spare. The car had a very thrifty average consumption of just 3.8 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres. Despite its economy, the Mercedes-Benz E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID’s four-cylinder diesel engine can do 0-100km/h in 7.1 seconds and has a top speed of 242 km/h.

Mazda 2’s new batch

Mazda is releasing the new version of its popular Mazda 2 hatch with a choice of three different engines, dependant on market, including SKYACTIV-G 1.5and 1.3-litre petrol engines or a SKYACTIV-D 1.5-litre diesel engine. The new Mazda2 has a host of improvements in its compact body and KODO design. It is the fourth in Mazda’s line-up of next-generation models that adopts the full range of SKYACTIV Technology.
