On a dirt road on Melbourne’s outskirts is a special place where man’s best friends are given a new lease on life.
Kerrie Gebert and daughter Kayla started Puppy Tales Rescue in Hoppers Crossing almost three years ago.
Since then they have saved about 470 dogs from going to pounds ... or worse.
They recently moved from a house in Hoppers Crossing to a large plot in Brookfield where there’s plenty of pasture for the dogs to roam.
Kerrie says she likes nothing more than being able to make better the lives of dogs in need of help and while only nine dogs call the place home, she expects numbers to grow rapidly.
“We’re developing now as a rescue place for dogs in desperate need of life-saving surgery.”
One dog looking for a home is Wentworth, a pug-shih tzu- cross that needed emergency hip surgery at a cost of $1500.
“Wentworth … couldn’t even use his hind legs and now he’s almost pain-free. That’s why I love it and that’s why I keep doing it,” Kerrie says.
The rescue group relies entirely on public donations and has become a full-time job for Ms Gebert, who previously worked as a vet nurse. Kayla is following in her mum’s footsteps and when she’s not helping rescue animals, she, too, works as a vet nurse.

More than $500 million will be invested in roads and infrastructure in Wyndham’s west by the state government, council and developers, allowing crucial Werribee west arterial roads to be built within three years.
Last week, Planning Minister Matthew Guy announced a $533 million development contribution plan for Wyndham’s west, providing funding for community facilities, roads and sports fields across seven precincts in
thenext30years.Amongtheprojectstoreceive funding is the Armstrong and Ison roads link between the Werribee River and the Princes Freeway. Wyndham council will borrow $20 million to “forward fund” the project. e plan also includes a proposed bridge over the Geelong rail line in Werribee west to provide greater access to the Princes Freeway for commuters.
Mr Guy said the Armstrong and Ison roads link would be built as a result of a “landmark” agreement between the government, council
and developer Lend Lease. e first stage of the link is expected to be finished by 2017 and will include the building of Ison Road between the freeway and rail line, as well as the construction of Armstrong Road between Ballan Road and Black Forest Road.
e remainder of the link will be built between 2018 and 2025.
“Construction of Armstrong Road and Ison Roadisrequiredearlyinthedevelopmentofthe Wyndham west sub-corridor,” Mr Guy said.
Cr Glenn Goodfellow said the council
had already paid a substantial amount of its $21 million contribution to construction of Armstrong and Ison roads, while Lend Lease would deliver $52 million.
e remaining funding will be borrowed by the council, with the plan setting out how the council will be reimbursed.
Cr Goodfellow said other major road projects included in the plan were construction of Green and Black Forest roads.

e site of the former Glen Devon primary school in Werribee has been earmarked to become home to both an English language school and special school.
Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Andrew Elsburytold StarWeekly hewasworkingtohave the now-vacant lot returned to the community.
“We’re working on something for the site,” Mr Elsbury said. “ ere’s an English language
school at Wyndham Central College that I want moved there because they’ve asked for it.”
Mr Elsbury said the English language school was currently made up of four portable classrooms, which could easily be moved to the former Glen Devon school block.
He said the rest of the site would ideally be used by Warringa Park special school as a second campus.
“Warringa Park is always looking for more space and I think that would be the best outcome for the people of Wyndham,” he said.

A Hoppers Crossing resident is calling for speed limits in the area to be revised – upwards.
Nathan Farrugia has started an online petition calling for Hogans, Heaths, Derrimut and Sayers roads to have their speed limit increased from 60km/h to 70km/h.
Late last year, VicRoads lowered the speed limit by 10km/h on the roads following a statewide review that recommended the removal of 70km/h and 90km/h zones to avoid driver confusion.
But Mr Farrugia, 24, said the slower speeds were causing drivers to become frustrated. “We simply want the speed limits returned
to their original state, from the newly imposed 60km/h back to 70km/h,” he said. “ e lowered speed limits feel very slow, extend driving time and have a negative impact on driver attitudes towards driving and speed limits.
“Even a er a six-month period to adjust to these new limits, they still feel extremely limiting and not appropriate for the area.”
Mr Farrugia said that while VicRoads had argued that 70km/h zones were confusing, that was not the case on a road where the speed limit was constant.
“People don’t want less 70km/h zones – they just want fewer changes in allowable speeds,” he
said. “It’s a hard thing to fight because people will say that it’s safer, but these are main roads and they should be faster than 60km/h.”
But RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council chairman Jim Giddings said the lower speed limits should stay.
“People have got to realise that with the growth in population we’ve experienced, a reduction in speed limits is a positive thing,”
Mr Giddings said.

A Werribee road safety advocate whose brother was killed by a speeding drunk driver is urging Victoria Police to drop the state’s legal bloodalcohol limit to zero to change motorists’ attitudes towards drinking and driving.
Last week, police raised the possibility of lowering the legal limit from .05 to .02, asking the community to consider the benefits and impacts of such a move.
Lisa Markovic, whose brother Daniel was killed in May 2004, believes that dropping the
limit to .02 is a step in the right direction, but she would like legislators to go even further and reduce it to zero.
“At .02, people will misjudge [how much they can drink] more than they do now,” Ms Markovic said.
“Ifitiszero,there’snoroomformisjudgment.
ey’ll know that if they’re drinking they can’t drive.”
e co-founder of Road Trauma Families Victoria said it was time people thought more about the consequences of driving a car under the influence of alcohol.
Two Truganina houses were sprayed with bullets in separate early-morning drive-by shootings last week.
On Wednesday, July 9, three people were sleeping inside a house on Vanderbilt Drive when two bullets were fired at their garage and a front window about 3.20am.
e bullet that hit the garage door passed through a fridge before travelling through the bedroom of a man who lives in the house.
e man, who shares the house with his brother and his brother’s wife, said he was not scared by the incident.
“I’m never worried. I’m still alive,” he said. “A strong man [would] come here face to face, not come in the [expletive deleted] night and shoot my home.”
Detective Senior Constable Steven Oakley, from the Wyndham Crime Investigation Unit, said police were still searching for the gunman.
“Police ballistics are examining evidence

that has been recovered from the house,” said Detective Senior Constable Oakley, who would not confirm whether the house, owned by a member of the Haddara family, was subject to police raids in March this year.
He refused to comment on whether the incident was part of a turf war between feuding families.
On Saturday, another house in Truganina was targeted in similar circumstances. Just before 1am, a house on Tylden Way was shot at by several men before they fled in a dark-coloured car. ree adults and a child were home at the time. at house is also owned by a member of the Haddara family. A link between the shootings is being investigated.
Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or www. crimestoppers.com.au
She said drivers should never put themselves inthepositionwheretheymightkillthemselves or someone else.
“People have that misguided idea it’s OK to get in the car a er they have been drinking,” Ms Markovic said.
“ ey don’t see the big deal about what they’re doing. People need to understand that alcohol and cars don’t mix, regardless of how much you’ve had to drink.
“It’s not just about being fined or losing your licence, the issue is that people die as a result of this behaviour and people are injured for life by
this behaviour. At the end of the day, it is o en innocent people who are affected and families are le to pick up the pieces.”
Inspector Martin Boorman said police were considering lowering the blood-alcohol limit because at .05, a driver was at least twice as likely to be involved in a crash.
He said about 20 per cent of drivers killed on Victoria’s roads had blood-alcohol concentrations over .05.
“It’s about separating behaviours,” he said. “If you’re going to drink, don’t drive. And if you are going to drive, don’t drink.”

Despite the stresses and headaches – and the fact there are twice as many nappies to change, – mother of twins Louise Unsworth wouldn’t change a thing.
e Hoppers Crossing resident already had two stepdaughters when she learned she was pregnant with twins at the age of 35.
“It was a bit of a shock at the beginning because we never expected it, but then it was exciting. en there was lots of planning,” Ms Unsworth recalls.
She gave birth to Daniel and Freya three years ago. ey were born five weeks premature and each weighed only two kilograms.
She says life with the now happy and healthy three-year-olds is only getting better.
“It’s just been really special,” Ms Unsworth says. “Even though it’s a lot of hard work, it’s really great to see them together.”
Ms Unsworth says Daniel and Freya have always been energetic and know how to keep their mother busy.
“ e hardest thing is the sleep deprivation and juggling everything at once,” she says.
“Good family support makes it so much easier. And if someone offers you help, you take it.”
e Australian Multiple Birth Association, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, has helped thousands of families deal with the struggles of having more than one child arrive at once.
About 2 per cent of Australian families include a multiple birth. e association says medical and technological advances during the past four decades have made life for those families much easier.

One Wyndham property owner owes the council more than $303,000 in back rates as part of a community deficit of almost $10 million.
Latest figures from the council show more than 9000 properties were in the red on their rates in the 2013-14 financial year.
“ ere were 9372 properties with an outstanding balance of $5 or more as at June 30,” the council’s acting chief executive, Kelly
Grigsby, said. “ is equates to $9,869,467.88 in rates, charges and interest, or 6.41 per cent of the total amount of rates levied. e figure does not include the fire services levy.”
e council’s sustainable development director, Dean Rochfort, said one ratepayer owed $303,818.85, including penalty interest.
“ estatisticsalsoshowthetop10properties are responsible for $1,242,118 out of that $9,869,467 in outstanding rates, charges and interest.”
Community lawyer Michael Mitchell told
Star Weekly residents were risking much more than late fines if they did not pay their rates.
“Ultimately your house and property could be seized if you don’t pay your rates,” Mr Mitchell said.
“ e council is very understanding and if people are genuinely struggling to pay their rates then it will help them out by setting them up with a payment plan.
“But some people think it’s like not paying a library fine and they think it’ll just go away.
“If you owe the council more than $300,000,
it’s going to get its money.” Mr Mitchell said the amount of money owed in rates was indicative of a wider problem in Wyndham.
“ is is worrying because it shows that more than 9000 people couldn’t pay their rates for whatever reason,” he said.
“It shows people are living beyond their means and that the gap between rich and poor is getting wider.”
e council is also owed $416,034 from 2082 unpaid fines, mainly for parking offences.

A new campaign to have more schools built in Melbourne’s western suburbs has been dismissed by a Liberal MP as a “smoke and mirrors” tactic.
Altona Labor MP Jill Hennessy launched the campaign last week, saying the west would continue to struggle if more schools were not delivered to service the growing population. She called on people to sign an online petition demanding that the state government act.
“As development continues to be approved across Melbourne’s west, there is a distinct lack of adequate investment in education infrastructure, especially at the senior level,” she said.
“Many local residents are travelling long distances to access schools, dealing with transport challenges and congestion in the process. Many in the local community have expressed concerns about the lack of senior options available for their children.”
Ms Hennessy said she would continue to advocate “for greater funding across the local
Werribee’s busiest pubs and nightclubs are uniting in a bid to bring an end to drunken feuds and incidents.
e Park Hotel and Mynt Lounge have both installed Scantek, a system that scans every patron’s ID and flags people who have been banned at other venues.
Park Hotel owner Nick Christou, who installed the system about a week ago, said it would create a local network that would make it more difficult for troublemakers to continue drinking once they had been kicked out of a venue.
“ is is all about providing a safer environment,” Mr Christou said.
He said his business was very proactive about security issues, and trouble-making customers facing expulsion found that “challenging”.

Mynt Lounge owner Adam Toffolon said the system would encourage more sensible drinking in the area.
“Venues have got a lot of power now,” he said.
“Police involvement in these kinds of things doesn’t have as much of an impact as saying to someone that they will be banned from 20 to 30 different venues throughout Melbourne – 90 to 95 per cent of problems we have can be stopped at the door.”

Sometimes eating out can leave a bad smell, says Kevin Hillier
I’ve have had my fair share of interesting experiences while dining out but recently I had two I’d never experienced before and hope never to be put through again.
e first was being accused of doing a runner. Yes, how dare they? I was with my wife, her mother and our son, hardly Bonnie and Clyde or Ma Barker’s gang in their prime. It’s embarrassing having a waitress yelling at you “Did you pay? What’s your room number?” as you’re walking up the stairs. I was offended, and let them know an apology was in order.
e second incident was totally different. A dinner for just Sarah and I, Hayden was with grandma and no driving was required, so we were both looking forward to a nice meal and a glass or two of whatever. We were seated next to a family of four, which was fine until one of the two young boys at the family table had a flatulence problem. Unfortunately his problem soon became our problem, as the stench wa ed its way to our table. Once was pretty hard to stomach, but it happened again about five minutes later, so our dinner conversation went

Should we just get up and leave? en the father took one of the boys to the toilet and, not surprisingly, the germ warfare stopped. Luckily we hadn’t been served our meals because I wouldn’t have been able to taste anything but deep fried stench. Has this happened to you and what did you do? I look forward to your feedback on this.
“ARE you OK, mate?” On hearing that, the young man on the ground jumped up like a member of Michael Jackson’s dance ensemble and assured me he was fine but thanks for asking. He was clearly under the influence of something, as he’d been writhing around and appeared to be in a state of agitation, before lying down and responding to my inquiry. Hobsons Bay council has revealed that $2.3million allocated for a “confidential acquisition” in its 2014-15 budget was to buy the former Laverton Primary School site for parkland and, most likely, social housing. e total cost for the 1.4-hectare site, excluding GST, is $2.6million.
According to a previously confidential council report, 10,000 square metres would be necessary for a neighbourhood park and public open space, leaving 4450 square metres that could be used for “affordable housing”.
e Department of Treasury and Finance (DTF) says it is proposed to make the Epsom Street property “an appropriate residential zone”. As revealed by Star Weekly, the Hobsons Bay Residents Association had questioned whether the council planned to buy the school site, saying the council should consult residents before spending such a large sum of ratepayer money. e association questioned why the council wouldn’t consider buying the former Altona West Primary School site, which residents fear could be used for medium-density housing. DTF had offered the council an opportunity to purchase surplus school sites before they were listed for public sale.

Violet Grey knows more about diabetes than most other six-year-olds.
Last year, the Iramoo Primary School pupil began raising funds to help nd a cure for diabetes a er her younger brother, Ethan, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
Violet, Ethan, 4, mum Tania, grandmother Susan Wesson and great-grandmother Rhoda Primrose raised $1800 by taking part in the Walk to Cure Diabetes around Albert Park Lake in October.

Unwanted in Wyndham
How dare the state government continue to bully Wyndham council and the residents of Wyndham into accepting these excessive developments (‘Infrastructure funding urged’, Star Weekly, July 9). Every day
the ghettos of Wyndham grow. This is yet another housing development that Wyndham does not need, forced on us by the state government just because it can – so it can invest profits elsewhere instead of back into Wyndham. How many times do we need to be reminded that with well above 5000 properties for sale or rent in Wyndham, we do not need or want more new housing here?
If the state and federal governments will not pay for all the shortfall in infrastructure for any development here, then it should not go ahead. It’s great that the council is taking a stand but ultimately the state government can just over-ride it and do whatever it wants. This flawed system needs to change.

Plans to bring forward construction of the Armstrong and Ison roads link will change the way residents move around Wyndham. Manor Lakes resident Lesley Watson said the roads and a proposed bridge over the rail line would make accessing Geelong and the city much easier for people living in Wyndham Vale and Manor Lakes.
She said people currently had to drive along McGrath Road and on back streets to access the freeway.
“ is will link Greens Road to Armstrong Road and the freeway. We have been waiting three or four years for Armstrong Road and thought it would be 2017-18 before it was built.
“We’re grateful and thankful that it is being brought forward.”
Manor Lakes Residents Association president Cedric Young said the road link and bridge would be most beneficial for people travelling from Wyndham to Geelong or Melbourne CBD for work.
“ is means they won’t have to go through Werribee. In school times, the traffic travelling through Werribee is really bad,” he said.
“I think this will be great for the community as a whole.”
Wyndham Vale resident Greg Byrne said the construction of Armstrong and Ison roads would help get trucks off Ballan Road and relieve the pressure on what he says is a worn and rough road.
Mr Young said he was pleased the government was committed to developing the infrastructure in Wyndham’s west over the next 30 years to meet the needs of existing and future communities.
“It is really great to see a long-term commitment to the area.”

ousands of trucks will be forced to travel across Melbourne from the western suburbs if the state government goes ahead with its plan to build the city’s second container port at Hastings, according to industry experts.
Victoria University’s Institute for Supply Chain and Logistics (ISCL), made up of academics and industry experts, released a report last week, revealing that 70 per cent of state and national freight will have to travel from the western suburbs to reach Hastings.
e report also said that almost half of all import and export containers passing through the Port of Melbourne originated in, or were destined for, businesses between Altona and Laverton in the west and Hume in the north.
Launching the report at a Committee for WyndhamlunchinPointCooklastWednesday, ISCL chair Dr Hermione Parsons said it was time for the Liberal and Labor parties to look at alternatives to Hastings.
e ISCL and the Committee for Wyndham will lobby both parties in the coming months, asking them to look at their options.
A memorial honouring the work of two nurses in World War I will be built in Little River.
e Little River Historical Society will use a federal government grant of more than $52,000 to build the memorial as part of its Centenary of World War I celebrations.
e memorial will be dedicated to Little River cousins Catherine (Kit) McNaughton and Sarah (Sadie) McIntosh.
It will be unveiled next year to mark the centenary of Ms McNaughton’s departure from Port Melbourne’s station pier on July 17, 1915 to serve in the war.
At one stage, Ms McNaughton was the only nurse working in a hospital ward dedicated to saving the lives of injured enemy soldiers.
Her work earned her the Royal Red Cross, the highest military honour bestowed on nurses by the Commonwealth.
She also returned from the war as Australia’s first plastic surgery nurse, before continuing
to live a life of relative obscurity back in Wyndham.
Her service was mentioned in despatches by Winston Churchill.
Last year, historian Dr Janet Butler released a book detailing Ms McNaughton’s war service.
It is based on her diaries, which chronicle her journey from Little River to Egypt, France, Greece and England and back.
Lalor Labor MP Joanne Ryan, who is Ms McNaughton’s granddaughter, said she was pleased Ms McNaughton and Ms McIntosh’s service was being recognised.
“I look forward to Kit and Sadie having a permanent memorial in the town where they grew up and in the region they returned to, where Kit married and raised her family,” she said.
Dr Parsons said one alternative could be a port to the west of the Port of Melbourne.
“If a significant proportion of the businesses currentlyestablishedtothewestofMelbourne’s centralbusinessdistrictremainintheircurrent locations, the potential freight transportation impact could be significant,” she said.
“When the Port of Hastings reaches its capacity of nine million containers, as planned, in 2050 ... it could potentially involve the movement of 4.5 million containers to and from Melbourne’s main western industrial district.
“ is would require over 4000 trucks or 140 trains moving across Melbourne’s road and rail network between Melbourne’s industrial west and north, and Hastings, daily.”
Dr Parsons said transport companies would face significant costs if they tried to move so many containers an extra 100 kilometres on increasingly congested roads. e cost would likely be passed on to consumers.
“Our exporters need to compete in international markets and they can’t if they have to wiggle their way across Melbourne,” she said.

Wyndham residents are being urged to pay more attention to what they are putting in their green-waste bins.
Recent audits of the city’s green-waste trucks have found residents are confused about what they can and can’t put in the bins.
e optional bins can be used to dispose of garden waste, including leaves, lawn clippings, grass and non-noxious weeds.
Cr Peter Gibbons said residents had been foundtobeputtinggeneralrubbish, recyclables, timber, plastic bags and plant pots in the bins.
“ ese practices contaminate the whole bin and mean otherwise compostable items are sent to landfill instead,” he said.
Cr Gibbons said it was important that residents put only the correct items in the bins because Wyndham sent its green waste to a state-of-the-art composting facility at Bulla.
“Green waste processed at the new facility
is turned into high-quality compost for agricultural use,” he said.
“To ensure that the material provided to farmers is of the highest quality, it’s important that residents dispose of their green waste correctly.
“Removing pieces of plastic, metal, glass and timber from green waste during the composting process is time-consuming and expensive, so it’s important that residents put only correct material in the bins.
“Using green waste bins correctly has benefits for our agricultural community and environmental benefits, as it reduces the amount of waste going to landfill.” e council has teamed up with the state government and other councils to educate residents, through the Back to Earth website, on what they can and can’t put in their green waste bins.
For more information on green waste, visit: www.backtoearth.vic.gov.au.
AWerribee-basedscientisthasbeenrecognised as one of the world’s most promising people in his field.
Dr Josh Aleri was recently named winner of the Gustav Rosenberger Award for his work in cattle science.
e international award is presented to one person annually and recognises the best postgraduate student in the bovine science industry.
Dr Aleri is from Kenya, where he worked as a vet before moving to Australia two years ago.
Growing up with 11 brothers and seven sisters, Dr Aleri, 29, felt he always needed to achieve something special to stand out from the crowd, and his latest award has helped him do that.
As well as the prestige that comes with the award, Dr Aleri was also given about $14,500 to help him further his studies.
While studying at the University of Melbourne’s faculty of veterinary science in

Werribee, Dr Aleri has been undertaking a fellowship in cattle health and welfare.
“I’ve always liked working with cattle,” Dr Aleri said.
“ ey’re very special animals. ey can talk to you without even speaking and I think I’ve developed that way of communicating with them that makes my work easier.”
Most of what he is studying is still confidential, but he says the main goal of his work is to “answer questions we have around different production parameters”.
As for the future, Dr Aleri says he wants to become a professor and help teach the next generation of scientists as his mentor, Professor Andrew Fisher, has done.
“If I can improve people’s lives by foretelling animal health and wellbeing then I will be happy every day,” he said. “But if I can discover something then I’ll be even happier.”
Dr Aleri will travel to Cairns on July 26 to accept his award.

Little River Historical Society president Les Sanderson grew up in the area and knows a thing or two about Wyndham – past and present, writes Rebecca Miller
What’s your connection to the local community?
I’ve just moved into Wyndham Vale (Manor Lakes). I grew up in Little River and have always been involved with the community; we were always encouraged by our parents to be [involved in community] like they were.
I’m president of Little River Historical Society and its representative at Wyndham Tourism Association meetings.
I’m secretary of Little River Mechanics Institute and Free Library; a life member of the Little River Cricket Club and Youth Club and have been president of the tennis and badminton clubs.
Where’syourfavouriteretreatspot?
As a kid I loved going to the You Yangs and now I like to spend time at the Mechanics Hall going through the historical society collection.
What’syourfavouriteeatery?
Best co ee in Little River is Little River Motors (general store). In Werribee, any Wyndham Tourist Association member cafe.
Wyndham Cache and Johnsons on K are excellent and Accetta’s Wood red Pizza House does a good pizza.
What would you change in your neighbourhood?
LittleRiverisstartingtogettoosurburbanised (i.e. concrete footpaths and non-country style dwellings).
I’d remove and repair footpaths with gravel or Lilydale topping and give the town its rural heritage back. e town has a lot of history and
historical structures that people would come to see if preserved. I’d encourage a single body to be the voice of both councils, as it must be di cult for Wyndham Council to know where to allocate funds with small groups requesting funding for di erent things. One body could set priorities.
Whatwouldyounotchange?
e rural feel and friendly atmosphere.
Locals welcome visitors and former residents and the community pitches in at fund-raisers organised by groups they may not be involved in.
Little River has a number of good volunteer groups all working toward the bene t of the town.
WhatdoyourememberbeinginWyndham that’snolongerthere?
In Werribee; Comben’s Self Service Wholesalers, Horrie Davis’ hardware, Manor Railway station, Fisher Motors, Biland Trading, Denny’s, Callanan’s Chemist, the hospital in Synott Street (near pool) and Dr Prouse.
In Little River; Bulls General Store, Monty’s Motors, school concerts in the hall, the railway station being manned 24 hours and gangers checking the line, collecting milk for school from the railway station in a wheelbarrow; the Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works workers bus and Jack McLean’s school bus taking students to school in Geelong.

Linh Da Vo is a happy girl with a beautiful smile – not that you can see it.

e 12-year-old from Vietnam was born with a birth mark on her face which grew into a tumour that has taken over the le -hand side of her face and obscures her mouth.
Deer Park resident Kim ien Truong met Linh Da two years ago in a children’s hospital in Vietnam and has sponsored the girl and her mother, Hanh Vu, to come to Australia for medical treatment.
“ ey [the hospital] couldn’t do any treatment for her so I chased her medical report and contacted Monash Hospital and they agreed to take her on,” Ms Truong said.
MsTruong, whoisaformerVietnameseboat person, has already raised more than $40,000 for the surgery by approaching businesses and community groups.
Linh Da will be the fourth child Ms Truong has helped out in recent years, including an orphan born with congenital glaucoma, a seven-month-old with glaucoma and a

two-year-old who couldn’t move her body because of a large tumour in her brain.
Ms Truong says she wants to give such kids a chance to access proper medical treatment and help with both their health and appearance to give them a bright future.
Linh Da’s tumour is not cancerous, but it does cause her pain. Doctors will need to remove the tumour and take some muscle from her leg to put in her cheek. She will also need plastic surgery and dental work.
Ms Truong said Linh Da had undergone a series of tests in the lead-up to the tumour surgery, which will be done either this month or early in August.
“We don’t know in total how much this will cost. It could be up to $70,000 or $80,000, or it could be less,” Ms Truong said.

In Alamanda estate (think nature walks followed by a coffee at the cafe), this impressive house is designed specifically with zoned family living and entertainment in mind. Of the four big bedrooms, the main has twin wardrobes and a sleek en suite with stone-topped vanity unit. There’s also an open study. A lounge room has back garden views, a dedicated home theatre room has a raised seating platform, and a spacious dining area adjoins the kitchen. A stone-topped island bench, dual wall ovens, gas cooktop, dual-drawer dishwasher, butler’s pantry and stylish colour palette have the kitchen looking mighty fine. An integrated outdoor room is enclosed via sliding doors which frame views of a water feature in a landscaped backyard with vegie patch. Very handy to bus stop, parks and Alamanda College, the property has ducted heating, evaporative cooling, solar panels, fibre internet-readiness and a remote-controlled double garage (extended) with internal access and back roller door.

Big, bright and beautifully presented, this is a house whose owners have taken their own decor path instead of slavishly following trends. This originality is expressed in colour choices, avoiding the now-commonplace earthy tones of latte, mocha or chocolate and, instead, embracing vibrant burgundy and strong charcoal. And what a stylish, classy result. Off-white porcelain tiles shine underfoot in high-traf c zones, plantation shutters are in burgundy or white, elegant drapes have fabric pelmets, walls are creamy-white, carpet is grey, and kitchen and bathrooms are accented with charcoal-hued mosaic tiles and cabinetry panels in burgundy: a ne partnership of harmony and air.
Of the ve good-sized bedrooms, the main (through double doors from entry hall) has space for a reading nook, walk-through
twin robes with bifold doors, and a chic en suite with oval spa, dual vanity basins and heated towel rail. One bedroom (with mirrored robes) is off the living hub, while the remaining three are down a carpeted hallway; one decked out in pink will thrill a young girl. Also along this hall are a separate toilet and the sleek main bathroom.
An open, carpeted lounge room with two entry portals is the spot for adult retreat, while a living hub surrounding the kitchen delivers space galore via a family-meals zone and rumpus room. Floor tiles, vertical blinds and a three-door, opaque-glassfronted storage closet anked by shelves make the rumpus room practical and easily tidied.
The kitchen has a stone-topped, return island bench with striking pendant lights
above and storage below, a double-door pantry, pull-out bin cupboard, an Asko dishwasher and a D’Amani 900mm gas cooker under steel-and-glass rangehood. A big laundry next door has loads of storage and access to the remote-controlled double garage with back roller door.
A big pitched-roof pergola above stamped concrete squares away family entertainment, a cute wooden cubby house and play area will keep the littlies amused, and a big garden shed is always handy.
The property of about 1011 square metres in Manor Lakes estate has ducted heating, three split-systems, alarm and a 20,000-litre water tank. It’s a stroll away from a shopping centre and childcare and close to schools and station.

Achieving back-to-back stage sell-outs in record time, The Heartlands, one of Tarneit’s fastest growing estates, is fast-tracking its next stage of 29 family-friendly blocks in order to keep up with buyer demand.
With convenient access to the community’s future school sites, Stage 21 has a selection of east-facing blocks located just moments from the Club Heartlands recreation centre and
picturesque wetlands precinct. This latest stage offers blocks ranging upwards from 400 square metres, with prices starting from $160,000.
Developed by Asset1, The Heartlands places the needs of its local residents rst, with one of the key points of difference being the well-considered masterplan that delivers public amenity within easy walking distance of every home.
With a proposed school and sporting site
earmarked for Hummingbird Boulevard, coupled with the recent announcement of a new childcare centre expected to open by the end of 2015, Asset1’s sales director Mark Adams said the estate truly caters for family needs.
“From the start we wanted The Heartlands to offer a family-friendly community where local services are just a short stroll away,” Adams said. “Tarneit is developing rapidly, so we’re thrilled to see

our neighbourhoods ourish as new families move into their dream homes.
“Stage 21 offers greater exibility where purchasers can build their dream “forever” home with space for a family garden.”

It’s said ‘family is everything’ and it’s true for Marie Imelda and Louis Domingue who immigrated from Mauritus to Melbourne – and later Peet Limited’s Kingsford community in Point Cook – to stay with their adult children who also made the move.
It’s a dream come true for the couple who are building their rst house after 26 years of marriage.
“The idea of relocating to a new country with babies was too much,” Mrs Domingue said. “As the children grew older they wanted to move to Melbourne and we said if you’re going, we’re going too.”
The couple came to Melbourne in 2009 with daughters Coraline and Cathy, son Fabrice and daughter-in-law Joannie.
Together with grandson Joey, 4, the three generations have been sharing a rented house in Featherbrook for the past ve years and are excited about building a four-bedroom house with enough room for everyone.
“As soon as we drove into Kingsford we were so impressed with the estate that we signed the contract the same day,” Mrs Domingue said. “We knew there was high demand for blocks with not many left, so we were quick to choose ours.”
Peet Limited managing director and chief executive Brendan Gore said the Kingsford community had been very popular with families since the estate was launched in 2010.
“Kingsford’s popularity re ects its combination of quality facilities, strong community spirit, affordable home sites and proximity to essential services,” Mr Gore said.
“More than $3.5 million has been invested in the community’s parks and recreational spaces, recognising the crucial role these play in developing a neighbourhood.”

Werribee Centrals have risen to the challenge of close rival Anakie to keep their Geelong and District Football League finals chances alive.
e Centurions had many challenges thrown their way during three cagey quarters before li ing in the last term to storm to a 23-point win, kicking four of the last five goals of the match.
e telling move was that of Phil Jones to the forward line, with the mobile tall snaring three majors to break the game open.
e Centurions have seven wins and remain a game out of the five.
ey will return home to Galvin Park on Saturday for a crunch game against fi h-placed Winchelsea.
Werribee Districts was far too strong for Port Melbourne Colts on the road at Murphy Reserve, cruising to an 84-point win in the WRFL division 1.
Chris Molivas booted seven goals and Tate McCutcheon had a standout game as the Tigers kept hold of second spot on the ladder.
e Tigers are on track for a double chance in their first season in the WRFL since crossing from the VAFA.
In division 2, Manor Lakes sent fellow 2013 expansion side Sanctuary Lakes packing to the new third division with their tails between their legs a er a 52-point loss.
e Storm didn’t have it all their own way though, heading into the half-time break with scores level.
e favourites steadied with 13 goals to four in the second half, including five from Ty Priest, taking his tally to 52 for the season.
Tarneit will be looking forward to the restructured competition a er being on the receiving end of another hammering.
Ominously, the Titans lost by 111 points to Albanvale, one of the sides joining them in the third tier.
Glenorden suffered its first defeat of the season a er its score was doubled in a 42-point loss to West Footscray at Shorten Reserve.
Wyndhamvale defeated Caroline Springs by 40 points a er forward Paul O’Shea bagged eightgoals.O’Sheahaskicked83fortheseason.

Hoppers Crossing has le the door slightly ajar for a raid on its position in the Western Region Football League’s division 1 top five.
e Warriors received a post-match grilling from seething coach Steven Kretiuk, who labelled his side “non-competitive” a er its 24-point loss to Altona on the road at JK Grant Reserve.
“It was our worst performance of the year,” Kretiuk said. “We just had so many noncontributors and so many who dropped their head on the day.
“We saw the warning signs in the second half against Port Melbourne Colts last week, and some of our training standards during the week flowed on to the game.
“If you lose, you lose, but when you don’t have the desire to compete, well, we’ll look to someone else.”
e fi h-placed Warriors remain nestled two games and percentage safe inside the top five but have undoubtedly kissed their double-chance hopes goodbye.
ey face fourth-placed St Albans in a huge game on the road at Kings Park Reserve on Saturday in what could be an elimination final preview if ladder positions remain unchanged between now and the finals.
Kretiuk will search for answers to the Altona debacle at training, promising a tough week on the track.
ursday night selections may also throw up the odd surprise, though injuries to Jordan Taylor (ribs) and Jordan Cook (hamstring) may spare a big name or two.
“We’re going to have to make some decisions on players on performance,” Kretiuk said. “Whether you’re a VFL player or a Hoppers Crossing player, we’ll pick our side on performance and team balance from now on.”
e Warriors will be out to atone for the “belting” they received from the Saints in the first round.
Kretiuk stressed the importance of his side getting first use out of the centre, with the Warriors’ defence facing the prospect of being stretched by the bevy of Saints forward options.
“ ey’ve got a really potent forward line –four really good talls – but they’re also really strong on the inside so we need to match them,” he said. “We need to make sure we open up the game and use our pace and agility.”
Meanwhile, the new WRFL division 3 competition will make its long-awaited arrival this weekend, with Albanvale, Braybrook, Laverton Magpies, North Sunshine, Sanctuary Lakes and Tarneit breaking away from division2.

Looking over the round of matches in both divisions, you can expect more competitive matches and tighter results, with sides matched closer to their standard of competition. Check out www.wyndham.starweekly.com.

Ԃ Why do some talented sportspeople make it and others don’t? Why, for instance, did Doug Hawkins play 300-plus games of AFL footy but many of his equally talented Braybrook teammates played none? Some people don’t want to go to the elite level; they’re happy to just play with their mates. Others dream of a baggy green cap or an AFL career but just don’t make it. I ask the question because I’m thinking of a player like Deer Park’s Kwame McHarg, who starred in the Vic Metro side last week and will have AFL recruiters talking about him because he’s a very good footballer. But is he good enough to make it? I don’t know, no one does. Does he want to make the sacrifices required to make it? He’s the only one who knows that. An AFL contract is very different to a rookie list contract, where there are no guarantees and no security and the money is not great. The dream’s fantastic but doesn’t pay the bills, feed the family or secure your future. In life sometimes you have to take a chance and I hope Kwame takes his, if that’s the way this plays out.
Ԃ Interesting to see Bulldogs president Peter Gordon launch Ross Oakley’s book The Phoenix Rises last week. Flashback to November 1989 and the two would not have been happy in the same postcode, let alone the same room. I know Peter and Ross have smoked the peace pipe in recent years and both have aired their thoughts on each other and the proposed merger between the Dogs and Fitzroy. I had to laugh as I remembered the stickers around at the time — ‘Up Yours Oakley” and ‘Merge Oakley into Outer Space’. I’m yet to read his book but I am keen to see how Ross views those events. I can remember a breakfast show I did from the MCG on the eve of the 1990 season. I remember clearly what Ross said to me and the tone in which it was delivered. Suffice to say he wasn’t a happy camper. Our paths have not crossed since.

Melbourne’s western suburbs will be represented by a star-studded contingent of athletes at the Commonwealth Games, which start July 23.
e seven-member team from the west enters the Games with varying levels of experience on the big stage.
At one end of the scale is first-time representative Morgan Mitchell, of Werribee.
e 19-year-old is one of Australia’s most exciting prospects on the track, having qualified for the Games in April.
She will compete in the 400 metres and 400-metre relay.
Mitchell will be joined in Glasgow by shooter Russell Mark, who enters the Games as a veteran of the Australian team.
e Hoppers Crossing resident is lining up in his sixth Commonwealth Games, adding to his five Olympics.
Mark will be joined on the shooting range by his wife Lauryn, who qualified for the women’s skeet, as well as Keilor’s Adam Vella, who has qualified in the men’s trap.
Also doing the west proud will be wrestler Ali Abdo.
e 33-year-old Altona North resident will represent Australia in the 86kg freestyle wrestling.
A er competing at three Olympic Games throughout his career, this will be Abdo’s first Commonwealth Games.
“I’ve been around for a fair bit and for me this could be my final run,” he said.
“I put a lot of pressure on myself. I want to finish on a high.”
Abdo won’t be the only wrestler from the west donning the green and gold, with Mehrdad Tarash having qualified in the 65-kilogram division.
A er finishing ninth at his first Commonwealth Games four years ago in Delhi, India, Tarash is confident he’s better prepared this time around.
e Sydenham resident said he learned a lot from his Delhi experiences and is hoping to translate that into a podium finish.
“When I made my first Commonwealth Games team I was very young,” he said.
“My preparation wasn’t as good as I would have liked, but this time around I have learnt from my mistakes and I’m a lot better prepared. I am definitely aiming for a medal.”
Rounding out the west’s contingent will be lawn bowler Carla Odgers. It will be the 22-year-old Keilor Downs resident’s first Commonwealth Games.

Kelly says it was a thrill for everyone involved with the centre to have so many athletes qualify for Glasgow.

It was a bold move to restructure the leadership of the club to a group of 11 rather than the traditional captain/ vice captain system. Are you happy with that?
Yes I am, but it is the middle of the year and I am going to challenge them again (the leadership group) they have to up the ante during this tough part of the year to themselves as players and to the rest of the group. The only disappointment has been Jarrod Mather who has missed the entire year through injury. He had an operation on his toe and it just hasn’t come up. I was really looking forward to Jarrod’s input on the ground come game day, but it’s all about pre season 2015 for him now unfortunately. I am really disappointed for him.
The North Ballarat v Werribee games are unique with the North Melbourne boys playing against each other. You are seeing it from a Werribee perspective now after years viewing it from a North Melbourne angle. How does that play out?
Generally the banter between the players starts early in the week, and when I was at North we used to split them up at the end of the week, the Werribee listed players would come to Avalon Airport Oval. I can remember a few years ago Nathan Grima was reported for striking Michael Wundke up at Ballarat, so that is a good indication that it isn’t just viewed as an internal practice match. It is a good test of the North Melbourne boys focus. It is a good reflection of attitude to see if they play it nice and hard on each other. It is an interesting dynamic because they know each other very well. They might play on each other at training, but you come to the game situation and the pressure is on, the result matters, it is a different ball game. It is unique to us because we are the only club with a split alignment. My gut feel is that we should only play North Ballarat once a year because of this.
Hall of Fame Dinner this Saturday night, you made it a compulsory function for the players.
Yes we did because I think it is really important for the current group to see and hear where the club came from, where it has been, and where it is heading. I think it is wonderful to acknowledge the efforts of people over the 50 year history of this club and for the current players, coaches and staff to be a part of it. It will be a good night, and if we can beat the Northern Blues earlier in the day will make it even better.

Australia’s best indoor cricketers will converge on Werribee Indoor Sports Centre (WISC) for a week-long carnival starting on Saturday night.
e Australian Open will pit state against state, with national titles up for grabs in the open men, open women, under 20 men, under 20 women and the Lord’s Taverners Shield for intellectually disabled competitors.
ere’s no bigger indoor cricket event in this country, and the tournament will be even more fierce in a world cup year. Australian selectors will keep a close eye on form as they look to finalise the squad for October’s Indoor Cricket World Cup in Wellington.
WISC spokesman David Pugsley said the Australian Open would be the biggest event held at the Riverside Avenue centre.
“We’ve never had anything this big,” he said.
“ e hotels will be full – a lot of places are already booked out.
“ ere’s teams coming from every state and territory.”
Victoria will square off with the highly-fanciedQueenslandat7pmonSaturday.
e action will be spread across five courts over the next three days, with play beginning at 8.30am and running until late.
To maximise crowds, the Victorians will regularly feature in the 7.45pm game to ensure people have enough time to get home from work to catch the Big V in action.
e final two days of the tournament will be streamed live at www.cricket.com.au with coverage including two cameras and commentators.
Organisers hope that a major free-to-air network will pick up the rights in future years.
“ e Friday and Saturday games will be live streamed over the internet,” Pugsley said.
“We’re trying to make sure it’s a good production so it gets a lot of viewers so it’ll be taken up by mainstream next year.
“ ere will be some top grade cricket with lots of noise and lots of atmosphere, so we’re hoping everyone will get down here to cheer on the local teams.”
Werribee Tigers hit a low point in their Victorian Football League season with a 31-point loss to Collingwood.
e Tigers managed only 10 scoring shots for the game and played catch-up football from go to whoa.
But for the Magpies’ inaccuracy – eight of 18 scoring shots resulted in goals – it could have been a harsher scoreline for the Tigers.
e Tigers slid out of the top four and next face the Northern Blues at Visy Park on Saturday, starting at 1.30pm.
e only positive to come out of the weekend for the Tigers was a thrilling three-point victory for the development league team against the Box Hill Hawks.
Sam Martyn, Merrick Buchanan and Jake Sharp were named among the best for the Tigers, while Jason Robinson booted a crucial two goals.

Anton De Pasquale has stretched his lead at the topofFormulaRenault1.6NECChampionship with a pair of wins at the iconic Nurburgring in Germany at the weekend.
e18-year-oldfromWerribeeSouthstarted from pole position in both races and was able to stave off the threat posed by the weather and

the other drivers to make it four wins from six starts this season.
“It was tricky conditions on the track as some lines were wet, others dry,” De Pasquale told frcup.com a er the second race. “It was an exciting weekend and I am very happy.”
De Pasquale (Lechner Racing) has 168 points

to lead Janneau Esmeijer (Provily Racing, 138 points) and Larry Ten Voorde (PiroSports, 105 points). ere are eight races remaining in the European season, with the next stop being Assen in the Netherlands from August 1-3.

A smile appeared on my face every time I approached a roundabout in the Toyota 86 GTS, which negotiates curves like its on rails. Even below the speed limit there’s an exaggerated sensation of speed, helped by your bum being just inches off the road. Needless to say that out on the winding roads out Anakie way I was in driving heaven.
e Toyota 86, along with its Subaru BRZ clone, is becoming a common sight on Melbourne roads and it’s easy to see why. Like it did the with the Celica in the 1980s, Toyota has cracked it for an affordable sports car that looks great and drives even better. Inside, the “cockpit” is kept relatively basic to keep the emphasis on driving.
Performance information is confined to the gauge cluster. I like how the speed is also displayed as a digital reading in the rev counter. But the car isn’t free of creature comforts. It has duel zone airconditioning controls and a small touch screen with the usual Bluetooth phone/MP3 player connectivity, navigation and voice control. e GTS model also has a reverse camera, a handy option in a car this low, thoughtherearvisionissurprisinglygood.
e front seats are fantastic. ey support your body through the G-forces caused by the 86’s curve-hugging drive without restricting your arms. ey feel like they’ve been moulded to your body and remain comfortable on long drives.
e steering wheel can be adjusted to
perfectly suit your seating position and feels great in hand.
To discuss this car’s practicality would be like rating a great white shark on its tree-climbing ability. But the rear seats are token, at best – my daughter had to sit crossed-legged on the school run – and the boot will barely fit a suitcase.
But this is a driver’s car, a er all; made all the better by its rear-wheel-drive set-up and very forgiving manual gearbox and clutch which help you take off like a pro even if you’re a little rusty on the stick.
You can get it in automatic, but that would take away a lot of the fun.
Shi ing down to second gear instead of third at those roundabouts produces a lovely noise to add to that feeling that you’re going way faster than you actually are.
e 2-litre, 4-cylinder engine will get from 0-100km/h in 7.6 seconds. Before getting used to it, I found it sluggish when wanting to overtake at about 100km/h in sixth gear.
A friend who owns one told me to go down to fi h gear in such situations – yep, it takes off like a rocket.
