Werribee has been ranked one of Melbourne’s most affordable suburbs for renters, with a median house rental price of $280 per week.
Data compiled by Domain and released last week revealed that Werribee was the fourthcheapest suburb in which to rent a house. Melton and Melton South offer Melbourne’s most affordable house rentals at $260 a week, followed by Frankston North ($270) and Kurunjang ($275).
Werribee was also the metropolitan area’s

fi h-most-affordable suburb for unit rentals, with median prices averaging $260 a week.
Melbourne’s least affordable suburb for renters was Toorak, where median weekly house rental prices are $900.
Domain senior economist Dr Andrew Wilson said Melbourne’s most affordable house rents were predominantly located in growth areas in the outer western suburbs, where there was little difference between house and unit rents.
He said the shrinking gap between house and unit rents was a worrying trend. “It’s a
sign people are being forced to change their choices about where they live and what they live in,” he said.
In May, welfare agency Anglicare released a rental affordability snapshot that found families were being forced to live in Melbourne’s outer suburbs. e report found that couples on the minimum wage with two dependant children were priced out of the rental market in the inner suburbs.
Anglicare principal researcher Dr Tatiana Corrales said families were being forced to choose between living in outer suburbs or
staying close to the city in inadequate housing they couldn’t afford.
Domain’s data also shows Point Cook is Wyndham’s least affordable suburb. Median rental prices for houses were $370 a week, $90 more than in Werribee. Unit rents were $325 per week.

Wyndham council’s 2014-15 budget has been unanimously supported by councillors, despite two of them voting against the dra document only eight weeks ago.
At the time, former mayor Heather Marcus and Cr Intaj Khan objected to the budget’s 5.5 per cent average rate rise and to plans to increase council borrowings by $15 million, to $55 million.
Cr Marcus warned that li ing the council’s debt to record levels could leave residents facing future rate rises of 10 per cent.
‘‘ I will not support significant rate rises … in the future ’’ - Heather Marcus
But at a special council meeting on Monday, councillors Marcus and Khan gave the budget their support, saying that voting against it would be detrimental to the community.
“Had it not been for the detrimental impact of the removal of services to this community, I would not be supporting a rate rise of 5.5 [per
cent] this year,” Cr Marcus said. “I am putting this council on notice … I will not support significant rate rises nor high loan borrowings in the future.”
Cr Khan said he accepted the rate rise was in the best interests of the community.
e final budget includes a $104.29 million capital works program, revised down from $108.79 million because of a reduction in the council’s projected operating income.
Included in the works program is $16 million for a Wyndham Leisure and Events Centre redevelopment and $18 million for a Werribee Sports and Fitness Centre project.

A woman died in an early-morning crash in Laverton North on Friday.
Police are investigating the smash that happened about 4.40am.
Almost $30 million will be spent on roads. Other projects include installation of energy-efficient globes in the city’s street lamps ($2.5 million), a bridge over Skeleton Creek in Truganina ($2.27 million), and a library in Tarneit ($4.5 million).
Werribee Football Club was unsuccessful in its bid to secure $5.5 million to redevelop Chirnside Park, despite a warning that the ground is not VFL-compliant.
e council will spend $122,000 this year to complete designs for the project. Cr Gautam Gupta said external funding commitments were needed before the project could begin.

e future of a $28 million building at Werribee Mercy Hospital remains in limbo five months a er it opened.
Last month, Star Weekly revealed that the Catherine McAuley Centre – a 60-bed, fully occupied rehabilitation and geriatric medicine complex for patients recovering from surgery or serious injury – was in danger of closing due to federal and state budget pressures.
Mercy Health executive director Dr Linda Mellors confirmed federal funding for services in the new building would end on June 30.
Last week, Mercy Health chief executive Stephen Cornelissen said hospital management was working through the funding crisis. He said there were no plans to increase revenue by raising parking fees or other costs for patients.
“We’re awaiting advice on our 2014-15 budget, butweareconfidentbothlevelsof government will resolve the issue soon,” he said. “At this point we are not aware of any viable alternative to government funding.”
State Health Minister David Davis said he was confident a solution could be found.
“[ ere are] a number of items we have pointed to that are difficulties in the federal budget, but the final calculations are not yet done,’’ he said.
‘‘What I can say is that early estimates understated the amount of funding available from the federal government.”

Wyndham council would lose more than $64 million in the next three financial years if state Labor was elected to government in November and followed through on its plan to cap council rates.
Victorian Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews has vowed to cap council rates in line with the Consumer Price Index if his party wins the state election in November.
Mr Andrews said the measure would help cut wasteful spending at councils and ensure
that ratepayers got value for their money.
But figures released last week by the state government show that if the plan went ahead, Wyndham would be the hardest-hit outer suburban municipality, missing out on $64,650,340 in the 2015-16 to 2017-18
financial years.
efigures, providedbyLocalGovernment Victoria, are based on forecast rates and changes in revenue.
Wyndham acting chief executive Kelly Grigsby said capping rates would cut funding while creating extra work.
“Wyndham City would be concerned about any changes to the current system of each councildeterminingitsownratesandcharges, as it may jeopardise our ability to provide adequate local services and infrastructure,” Ms Grigsby said.
“Under the Labor Party proposal, councils are able to raise rates and charges above the level of CPI by applying to the Essential Services Commission. is would require an increase in workload and paperwork for a potentially similar outcome to the current system.”

But Tarneit Labor MP Tim Pallas said the council needed to show what it was spending ratepayers’ money on to justify a rates increase above CPI.
“Council rates have increased over CPI for every ratepayer in Wyndham, and council forward estimates show rates will increase at 5.5 per cent a year – more than double CPI,”
Mr Pallas said.
“No tier of government … should be able to place such an increased burden on Wyndham residents’ cost of living without justification.”

New suburb’s name was a poor choice, writes Kevin Hillier
Ihave to agree with the thoughts in some of the letters to the editor and comments on the StarWeekly website about the naming of our new suburb. If East Werribee is the best we can come up with, it’s a very sad indictment on our imagination and knowledge of local history.
Planning Minister Matthew Guy said there were a number of suggestions from the public, but none were better than East Werribee. What were they? I would love to see the list and make my own mind up on that. Surely the name Chirnside, which has such historical significance to the area, could have been considered.
Social media can be a wonderful source of information and a terrific means of communication given its global reach. But it can also be a public laundromat where people air their dirty washing. Some of the local Facebook sites are little more than a forum for a small group of people to endlessly push their own agendas, o en with a level of personal vitriol. Others seem to delight in having public slanging matches in order to draw attention to
themselves. One involving a recent sporting club reunion was petty, childish, crude and pointless.
I still believe people don’t understand the legal ramifications of many of their posts. It’s the same as putting it on the front page of this newspaper. It’s in the public domain and with that goes all the litigious responsibilities.
I also don’t like those who use social media to circumvent going through the right channels to get things done. I have seen this with rubbish removal, tree lopping, potholes and the like. I find it pretty poor when a Facebook photo of a pothole is what’s required to get someone off their bums to get it fixed.
Do we have a major drug problem in Wyndham? I am keen to hear what you know. I ask because of something I witnessed recently that showed how close the drug problem is to our front doors.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has officially opened a new $80 million milk processing factory in Wyndham.
Mr Abbott joined Victorian Premier Denis Napthine last week to open the Devondale Murray Goulburn milk processing and bottling plant on a site in Laverton North that was previously a paddock.

“ is is a great antidote to any pessimism we might be tempted to feel about dairy or the manufacturing industry and about the ability of Australian companies to work together to give Australians the best possible deal,” Mr Abbott said.
“Coles cops a bit of flak … but it was [to their] great credit that they were prepared to offer Murray Goulburn this 10-year contract.”
Dr Napthine said the $80 million investment from Devondale in building the plant showed that Melbourne’s west was important to Victoria’s future.

A national distribution centre will open its doors in Truganina, boosting jobs in Wyndham.

It will invest $12 million in the Truganina centre, which is expected to create 28 jobs.
State Development Minister Peter Ryan said a distribution centre would open in 2015 and employ more than 300 people.
“ ese jobs will be a boost to western Melbourne,” he said. “In state development, we’re luring major companies and more jobs to our state.”
Inenco chairman Kevin Clarke said the transport and logistics advantages of Melbourne’s west had sealed the company’s decision to open its national base in Truganina.

Short-changed on public transport I would have been surprised if the government had actually announced more services to Werribee (“No extra trains for busiest lines”, Star Weekly, July 2). We’re so used to being overlooked in transport infrastructure that to actually get any new services would be out of the ordinary.
Kurt Stanley, via Facebook
Great. Nine services are going to have extended hours and two will now run on Sundays. What about a bus that comes into some estates in Tarneit?
If you live in Moorookyle estate you have

Typical neglect of public transport in Wyndham from this government, I’m afraid.
The Werribee line had the greatest increase in peak-hour traffic numbers in the latest lot of passenger counts that had to be dragged out of a reluctant government under FOI.
But we got no extra services for the Werribee line, while four other lines on the other side of town that happen to pass through marginal electorates get extra services.

A name with baggage
I live in Werribee. I like it here and I’m proud of this town. But the name Werribee does indeed have a stigma attached to it (“Suburb name settled”, Star Weekly, July 2). People from all around Melbourne think of Werribee as just a poo farm; they think of bogans and a country town with nothing but a zoo.
With this in mind, I think it’s going to be difficult for the government to effectively market East Werribee to potential big businesses and companies, especially if they plan on bringing some of them from the city all the way down here.
To be honest, nobody (outside of the south-western suburbs) wants to set up a company and work in Werribee. But they would if it was called something completely different. I still prefer the name Chirnside, or even something like Hovell (after William Hovell, one of the first European explorers of the area).
Name Change, via web
I think they should call the new suburb Eastpoint, as it’s between Werribee East and Point Cook. It’s a name that would have meaning to locals who know the area but also mentions nothing about the name Werribee. Perhaps it would make the location more desirable for businesses looking for a place to establish themselves.
Vote 1 Eastpoint!
Sarah, via web
Eastpoint would be confusing and misrepresent the area. Eastpoint gives the impression that the suburb is located in Melbourne’s east.
A bit like Eastland shopping centre. Also, given its importance as a major business district for Melbourne’s west, it needs to have a name that most people will associate with the west of Melbourne.
East Werribee does this as most Melburnians already associate Werribee with Melbourne’s west.
Jason Ward, via web
Wow! So creative! Did they pay a consultant gazillions of dollars to come up with that?
Ype Zee, via Facebook
Never heard politicians sound so unconvinced of anything.
East Werribee is a very uninspiring name – just another suburb, not a place you would want to move your business operations to from the Melbourne CBD or live in, for that matter. It’s so unimaginative and shows such a lack of care for the project overall. What about Wyndham CBD? That says exactly what it is all about – not some vague reference to it being on the east side of Werribee.

Away with the ferry Regarding “Ferry link for Wyndham” (Star Weekly, July 2): Within 12 months? Presumably the ferry will actually need a harbour. Given the snail pace with which the remaining breakwaters and other harbour facilities are proceeding, it will be more like 12 years.

We have to keep shouting until we are heard. (“Growth area funding ‘inequitable’”, Star Weekly, July 2).
We have to shout as a united community if we really want to be heard. Our united voter voices are the only thing that will make governments listen.
Residents need to step up and attend meetings, such as the one on Wednesday, July 16, at the Wyndham Civic Centre.

Wyndham residents have rejected suggestions a planned ferry service from Werribee South to Docklands will ease the municipality’s transport woes, saying it will be too expensive for commuters to use daily.
Planning Minister Matthew Guy last week announced the service would be running within 12 months, with stops possible at Point Cook and Altona. e trip is expected to take about 50 minutes and cost $25 return.
Mr Guy said the ferry would ease congestion on the West Gate Bridge.
But residents fear the trip will be too expensive to attract commuters; $25 is more than double the cost of a train fare.
Point Cook’s Alice Osborne said the ferry service would most likely be only a tourist attraction for Wyndham.
“It’s not going to work as a solution to public transport for Wyndham,” she said. “It’s not something my family would use unless it was a tourist thing.”
Truganina’s Michelle Monaghan has always been entertained by her grandmother’s customs and traditions.
Visits to grandma’s house meant squeezed cheeks and being greeted with the word skortha – Greek for garlic. Tradition holds that saying the word will ward off evil.
So when the Westbourne Grammar School teacher decided to write a children’s book, she drew on those memories.
“My grandmother is a very entertaining lady. e book is a tribute to her and her quirky customs,” Monaghan says.
“I have a four-year-old son and I wanted him to be informed about his family history. I’m keen to celebrate family traditions and celebrate them rather than try to hide them.”
Monaghan said writing and publishing Garlic, Hankies And Hugs wasalengthyprocess, but she was keen to share her experiences with her pupils and hopefully inspire them to one day write their own book.
Shehasalreadywrittenasecondmanuscript, which she hopes will be published soon.
Monaghan said writing children’s books came naturally to her.
“Most primary school teachers, when they sit down, would probably find that they have a few books in them,” she said.

Werribee South Ratepayers vice-president Joe Garra fears the service would not only be too expensive for commuters but also too difficult for people to access.
He said many of Werribee South’s roads weresingle-lanetracksthatwereregularlyused by tractors and other farm machinery.
Dr Garra is calling for the state government to upgrade the suburb’s roads before the first ferry departs.
“We don’t want all the traffic going to the terminal along Duncans Road,” he said. “ is
is still a farming area and people will have to be tolerant of tractors.”
Dr Garra is also concerned that the government has no contingency plan for days when conditions are too rough for the ferry to sail.
A spokeswoman for Mr Guy did not answer questions about contingency plans or whether Werribee South’s roads would be upgraded. She said the Transport, Planning and Local Infrastructure Department was negotiating with a private operator about the ferry service.

“I’ll miss her a lot,” Mandie says. “If I can win it would mean the hard work has paid off. Just because you have children shouldn’t stop you from achieving your own dreams.”

Ms Hartland said that at $2.4 billion, Brimbank also had the second-highest cumulative losses per adult population of any local government area since records began in 1992-3.
She said a $1 limit on bets would be the most straightforward and effective option for limiting the losses of problem gamblers.
“Eighty-eight per cent of recreational gamblers don’t bet more than one dollar per spin, so most punters won’t even notice the change,” Ms Hartland said.
She said financial stress, job loss, family
breakdown, crime, depression, and suicide were some of the worst impacts of problem gambling.
A $1 bet limit would limit losses to $120 per hour on average, down from the thousands of dollars an hour currently being lost.
Deakin University Associate Professor of Psychology Nicki Dowling said evidence showed the $1 limit would be likely to stem the losses of problem gamblers without having a negative impact on casual pokies users who tend to bet lower amounts at a time.

e Country Women’s Association is keen to prove to Point Cook women that the organisation is no longer just about tea and scones, with plans under way to open a branch in the suburb this month.
Membership chairman Janette O’Keefe says she’s “con dent” a new branch will form a er an information session which will be held on ursday, July 17.
e association, now in its 86th year, runs social and personal development events and activities for women.
Ms O’Keefe says the biggest bene t was friendship.
“We’ve got some women who have been members for so long and are still making new friends. It says a lot about an organisation that can engage and provide friendship.”
Long-time CWA member Marie Vassallo says the organisation has many bene ts for women, even in the suburbs.
“You get three times more than you put in. ere’s the professional development, the ‘me time’ which is so important and the amazingfriendsyoumakeacrossthestate,”she says.
e Victorian association has 315 branches in both rural and city areas.
Ms O’Keefe says the group has opened 42 new branches in the past 17 months and evolved from its early days.
“We’ve seen a resurgence in interest from the age group of 25 to 45 or younger,” she says.
“It’s amazing the number of younger women who want to learn to knit or bake scones or sponge cakes.”
e information session will be held from 7.30pm on ursday, July 17, at Point Cook Secondary College.

Wyndham council has been accused of ignoring the rights of nudists by a long-term user of the clothing-optional beach at Campbells Cove.
Warren, who did not want his surname published, said people from all walks of life enjoyed using the Werribee South beach and should have the freedom to bathe nude.
He said he could see no legitimate reason for the council’s plan to revoke the beach’s clothing-optional status.
As reported by Star Weekly, the council announced it was reviewing the beach’s status in May, believing the area was not as secluded as it used to be.
e council invited public feedback, with 10 people calling for nudists to be permitted to bathe at Werribee South.
A total of 31 submissions were received.
Campbells Cove is one of four o cial clothing-optional beaches in Victoria.
e others are Point Impossible and Southside at Torquay and Sunnyside North at Mount Eliza.
It’s the second time the council has tried to revoke the beach’s status. In 2007, an attempt to make beachgoers cover up failed to gain the support of the state government.
Submissions will form part of a report to a future council meeting.
Any decision to change Campbells Cove’s status will have to be approved by Planning Minister Matthew Guy.

A Wyndham cyclist is hoping a state government survey will make motorists more aware of other road users.
It is hoped the road rules and safety issues survey, which was recently unveiled by Roads Minister Terry Mulder, will gauge the public’s knowledge of the road rules that apply to cycling.
Mr Mulder said the government wanted to know where there were gaps in people’s knowledge of road rules and the issues drivers, cyclists and pedestrians wanted addressed.
He said the information gathered would help with a VicRoads review of cycling-related road rules.
“We know cyclists and drivers o en don’t see eye-to-eye,” Mr Mulder said.

“We believe this is partly caused by a lack of understanding and knowledge by both groups of the rules that apply.”
Hoppers Crossing cyclist Christine Morris is urging people to complete the survey, saying that some of the questions surprised her.
Ms Morris hopes the survey will encourage motorists to be on the look-out for cyclists and take their safety in to consideration.
“Mostdriversdorespecttherulesandcyclists but it only takes a few ignoring the rules to give you a scare,” she said.
Ms Morris said roundabouts and intersections were among the most dangerous places for cyclists, with some drivers unaware of cyclists’ rights while others did not always look for oncoming bicycles.

Wyndham council is demanding greater state and federal government infrastructure funding in the city’s north before it approves a development plan for the area.
e council says the city’s biggest developer contribution plan, which outlines the infrastructure and financial requirements for developers who build houses in parts of Tarneit, Truganina and Hoppers Crossing, is close to being finalised, but it needs more funding.
Cr Glenn Goodfellow said developer contributions for the area would cover less than 80 per cent of infrastructure costs. “Wyndham still needs the state and federal governments to assist in bridging the gap of over $200 million in local infrastructure requirements,” he said.
Hearings were recently held to address council and landowner concerns about the plan. A hearings panel, which was appointed by the Metropolitan Planning Authority, supported some of the submissions made by the council, including those relating to developer funding requirements for Dohertys and Leakes roads.
Cr Goodfellow said the panel supported increasing housing densities andcreatingmoreopenspaceinthearea.

As Werribee Open Range Zoo works hard to save wild gorillas, two young brothers have heard its call to arms and joined the fight. Eight-year-old Joshua Del Papa and his six-year-old brother, Anthony, are trying to recycle 1000 old mobile phones to support Zoos Victoria’s conservation campaign, They’re Calling On You. The campaign raises awareness about the impact of coltan mining on gorilla habitats and diverts mobile phones from landfill. So far the boys have almost 50 phones. Last week they visited Werribee Zoo to help celebrate the collection of the 100,000th phone as part of the campaign. Details: www.zoo.org.au/calling_on_you Xavier Smerdon

I hate it when cheese doesn’t melt properly. Instead of going all puffed up and golden brown, it turns into an anaemic-looking oil slick. My new favourite supermarket product at the moment is the Four Cheese Melt by Perfect Italiano. It melts like a dream and bakes or grills golden brown without going oily. It’s what I use in the taco recipe below.

Tacos are a regular feature on the menu in our house, especially as they’re so quick and easy to prepare. They also tend to be messy and unfortunately I often end up wearing mine, prompting my husband Kevin to constantly ask, “Did you manage to get any of that taco in your mouth?”

Most of the time we have loads of leftover taco mince. Making “Mexi-bake” is the perfect way to use leftover taco mince, as well as any leftover cooked rice you have on hand. Just line the bottom of a greased baking dish with a layer of cooked rice (which I colour yellow with a couple of teaspoons of turmeric powder), mix a can of drained kidney beans and a can of drained corn kernels through the leftover mince, and spread it over the rice. Spread a large tub of sour cream over the top (add a little water to give the cream more of a sauce-like consistency), then sprinkle grated cheese generously over the top. Bake at about 200 degrees celcius until the top is golden brown. Served with guacamole, it’s a delicious and easy winter meal that kids and adults seem to love.

A gentle rain was falling at Digman Reserve, Newport, when a 194-centimetre behemoth batsman scored 90 off 30 balls then bowled gentle off-spin to a 12-year-old schoolboy.
Welcome to the open-age, enthusiastically multicultural Mid-Year Cricket Association’s fi h annual competition.
Played from noon to 4.45pm on Saturdays on reliably green synthetic wickets usually surrounded by mud, the nine-week competition is for a growing army for which too much cricket isn’t enough.
About half the 1400 players enlisted in 70 teams occupying four divisions across mainly the north and western suburbs are from the subcontinent where, famously, the game is played and watched with a quasi-religious fervour.
e growth has been startling since MYCA’s initialyear,2010,when nineteamsfilledasingle division in the carefully named “mid-year” association, “winter” having being eschewed for its negative connotations.
Winter players of 2014 are sensible dressers; hoodiesareallowed, evenencouraged.Butthey must be uniformly coloured, so “if one player’s in orange, they’re all in orange”, a motley crew of a dozen umpires (of which this writer was one) was instructed amid the oak panelling and historic photos of Cricket Victoria’s boardroom in Jolimont.
is writer prepared to duck or fling himself to the turf as the aforementioned behemoth batsman, South Australiacontracted allrounderTrentLawford, laidwaste to some rather ordinary, even damp-squid, bowling.
e straight sixes of Lawford were of a frightening velocity. Never in the hunt for

its 288 target, Gellibrand sent in Ryan Caiger, aged 12, at No.11 to fight a rearguard action.
With the Wyndhamvale bowlers halving their pace, Ryan, not much taller than his bat, took a single to mid-off and retired not out as Gellibrand succumbed for 128.
e conquering Wyndhamvale side had hit 25 sixes.
While sodden outfields require boundaries to be cleared on the full or first bounce, winter cricket can also cause players to be painfully grounded. Last year, a pace bowler “did the splits” as his front foot skidded on a slippery synthetic surface. While his teammates

celebrated a win, he lay on a hospital bed nursing torn adductor muscle fibres.
An unwritten rule governing the mid-year comp is to come off the ground if it’s dangerous or anyone drowns. e matches are played for fun.Why elsewouldyouplayintherain? When stumps approached at Newport, a catch-cry was, “C’mon on, guys, it’s beer o’clock”.
Mid-year cricket was started by sports innovator and former motel owner-operator John Hammer of Brighton. In 1980, Hammer devised a super-rules football competition for retired players in four age groupings, from over-35s to over-50s.

In 2003, Hammer, now 78, launched an over-60s Victorian competition for fellow cricket “tragics”.
Although most of the competition’s players also bat and bowl in summer, a few are neophytes.
Strathmore Heights Cricket Club secretary Stephen Fielding never much liked cricket as a young man, but when his two sons took up the game at school he joined summer cricket at the age of 42.
Now,at58,he’sawicketkeeperandischuffed that he holds his club’s (summer and winter comp) record for most stumpings – 64.

Film producer Tony Hooper believes Wyndham has a rich environment for film-making. He also has a passion for helping locals through Point Cook Action Group, writes Rebecca Miller.
What’s your connection to the local community?
I’ve been living in Point Cook for six years. is year, I became president of Point Cook Action Group. We are keenly supporting the Get Wyndham Moving campaign for better transport and more local jobs and infrastructure. We support the East Werribee Employment Precinct but believe it needs a more inspiring name – it could be the Manhattan of the West.
Part of the Point Cook Action Group’s work, and a passion of mine, is working with VicRoads to address tagging along Palmers Road. We’d like murals painted by local school kids to build a sense of community ownership. Personally, I’ve been advocating expansion of the film sector within Wyndham, which sadly has no major facilities for pre- and post-production. I’d like to see a tailored TAFE course. We should attract low-budget filmmaking to Wyndham (and Geelong) to create ongoing employment opportunities.
I maintain the Superheroes of Point Cook, a Relay for Life fund-raising group working towards gathering the most people dressed as super heroes to give Point Cook (and Wyndham) a Guinness World Record.
How do you spend your downtime?
I edit, write and shoot films in Wyndham. Almost anywhere around the world can be replicated here in Wyndham. For example, Werribee Park could be used as a backdrop for Africa. Spending time with my family at Werribee Manor, having a picnic or visiting the You Yangs are other favourites.

a good place for a coffee or bite to eat? eobroma at Point Cook Town Centre. I love the dark hot chocolate there. Sanctuary Lakes Hotel do a great parma.
What would you change in your neighbourhood?
Point Cook and Wyndham generally need more jobs for white-collar workers, as a lot of people travel into the city for work. ere

also needs to be more opportunities here for film-makers. We need a larger precinct for the artsandacentralisedeventforpeopletoattend. eculturalcentreandgalleryinWattonStreet aren’t large enough.
What would you not change? e neighbourly community. It’s more country than the country and an enjoyable place to live.

New Homes & Land

LJ Hooker Werribee: 9748 5888 Price: $499,000 – $535,000 Private sale
In Brimbank Gardens estate, within metres of Derrimut Primary School, this young house is a cracker for presentation. There are four bedrooms, the main zoned away from living areas. Other bedrooms (with robes) are down a carpeted hallway, near the main bathroom and laundry with closet. An open study is near entry and a lounge-dining room is bisected by the tiled entry hall which leads to a hug living hub. The kitchen has a servery bench with storage beneath, a pantry, dishwasher, underbench oven and 900mm gas cooktop. An integrated outdoor entertainment area looks out to a compact, landscaped backyard with vegie patch. Ducted heating, split-system, alarm, solar hot water service and remote-controlled double garage are other notable features.

7 Sutherland Court, 3029
Sweeney Estate Agents: 9974 0922 Price: Contact agent Private sale
In a quiet court close to Werribee River precinct, this striking residence has a flexible and extensive floor plan of 54 squares, including three separate living areas over two levels: theatre/rumpus room, meals-family zone and separate lounge room. The kitchen has stone benchtops, stainless-steel appliances, dishwasher, and a butler’s kitchen/ pantry with appliances. A bathroom, laundry, study and fifth bedroom complete the entry level. A two-room studio with plumbing and separate entry would be perfect as a home office. Upstairs, the main bedroom has a retreat, private terrace access and en suite with dressing room. The remaining four bedrooms have built-in wardrobes; two have en suites. In the low-maintenance backyard, there are a solar-heated pool with water feature, large garden shed and outdoor entertainment area. Further features are a laundry chute, ducted heating and cooling, 16-panel solar power unit and side access for boat, trailer or caravan.

Pared-back Georgian best describes the style of this double-storey residence in a close where similarly large properties make their home. Although tucked away from main roads, it’s nevertheless in the thick of things, with Werribee Plaza, schools and parks all within an easy trip by foot. So a big tick for handy location, but how does the house stack up?
It has huge bene ts for a large family, serving up no less than six bedrooms, three discrete living spaces and a party-ready outdoor room. One bedroom with robes is downstairs near the front door, making it a well-placed option as an of ce. Five other bedrooms upstairs wrap around a carpeted landing where a dramatic fanlight window at one end draws in natural light. Through double doors, the main bedroom has
built-in seats/storage within a bay window, a big walk-in robe, and an in-wall slider to a large en suite with pink-and-white colour palette and dual vanity basins. The main bathroom decked out in charcoal and white is also on this level.
Back downstairs, off the tiled entry hall, an open carpeted lounge room and an open carpeted dining room (with cabinetry) each has dusky-rose carpet and vertical blinds. Past these rooms, a pair of columns de ne entry to the tiled living hub of kitchen and family-meals zone, before which is a powder room. The kitchen has an angled servery bench, timber cabinets, corner pantry, dishwasher, wall oven and 900mm gas cooktop; the adjoining meals area sits in a bay window dressed in vertical blinds. The laundry, off the family room, has
storage closets. Jutting into the backyard, a pitched-roof pergola above coloured concrete is a rustic, down-home space that invites major relaxation. Exposed timber rafters, a barn-style door and servery shutters, along with a potbelly stove, deliver a unique fully enclosed space ready to take the dings of family life well lived.
An expansive tri-level deck, interspersed with linear pebbled gardens planted with palms and agaves, couples with a covered pergola and a corrugated-iron water feature cascading into a pond; not only low-maintenance, but designed for different moods and seasons. The property has ducted heating and cooling and a double garage with panel-lift door.

Home buyers looking to live near the city for work, but somewhere affordable and close to services, may nd Williams Landing is for them.
Williams Landing, developed by Cedar Woods, is 19 kilometres from the CBD and home to the recently-built $110 million train station and Palmers Road freeway interchange, making the commute to and from the area easier.
Parks and gardens are dotted throughout
the four residential neighbourhoods and residents have direct access to Federation Trail and an upcoming nine-hectare reserve.
A town centre is also on the cards which will have shops, entertainment, commercial of ces and high-density living. Already established is a home-improvement warehouse and work has started on a $40 million shopping development due to open next year, which will have a supermarket, medical centre and 24 specialty stores.

Victorian state manager of Cedar Woods, Nathan Blackburne, believes Williams Landing’s easy access from the city makes it a prime location for families looking for somewhere that will be surrounded by services and provide recreation space.
“The vision for Williams Landing is coming to life in the town centre and in the residential neighbourhoods. Strong interest continues from families wanting to build premium homes in the suburb

By Chris Tolhurst
French writer Victor Hugo once pointed out that 50 is the youth of old age. It’s a thought worth keeping top-of-mind if you’re intending to live comfortably throughout your retirement because, for most middle-agedAustralians,theirgreatestfinancialasset isn’t a house or superannuation savings – it is their ability to earn an income.
Incomedeclineswithageformanypeople, especially a er the age of 55, so planning for retirement and plotting your financial future are make-or-break issues.
But where do you find an ethical and street-smart financial planner who’ll help you save money, protect you against risk and help to increase your assets?
We’veallheardabouttheuglycollapsesandinvestor losses from such companies as Storm Financial, Westpoint and the Fincorp Group. Some victims lost theirlifesavingsa erfollowingtherecommendations of licensed financial advisers.
e former Labor government proposed Future of Financial Advice reforms to improve the quality of financial advice and to legally require advisers to act in clients’ best interests. e Abbott government is reviewing the FOFA legislation but, whatever the outcome, you shouldn’t rely on a government department to protect you.
It’s your responsibility to do your due diligence and review the qualifications of any financial planner you are considering dealing with.
ConsumerlawexpertFrankZumbosayseducational andprofessionalqualificationsofprospectiveadvisers should be examined closely.
“You are entrusting these people with your life savings,” he says. “You need to find someone who is reputable, so always check how long they have
been giving investment and financial advice.” e Australian Securities and Investment Commission is the consumer protection regulator of the financial services industry. It’s vital the person or company you deal with holds an ASIC-issued Australian Financial Services Licence, or is an authorised representative of a business licensed by ASIC (about 80 per cent of financial planners fall under the licence of a bank or insurance company).

You’ll find a register of AFS licensees and AFS-authorised representatives, as well as a register of banned and disqualified persons, at asic.gov.au/ However, as recent collapses attest, official licensing doesn’t provide an iron-clad guarantee of protection. It’s important to talk with different types of advisers, such as a bank planner and an industry fund financial planner. ere are “holistic” lifestyle advisers, investment advisers and financial product advisers. All have different skills.
e Financial Ombudsman Service’s investments ombudsman, Alison Maynard, says many advisers have recurring charges. is makes it vital to decide early on whether you want to buy limited, specific advice or to receive holistic advice, or comprehensive financial planning, over the long term.

Werribee Districts wore down Sunshine Kangaroos in the nick of time to win by eight points at Soldiers Reserve and keep hold of second spot on the Western Region Football League division 1 ladder.
e Tigers needed a five-goal final quarter burst to brush aside the plucky Kangaroos a er breaking from the three-quarter-time huddle a goal in arrears.
Chris Molivas proved the difference between the teams, drilling five goals in his best performance of the season.
Hoppers Crossing built its 20-point win over Port Melbourne Colts on the back of a five-goal opening term at Hogans Road Reserve.
e ever-reliable Ryan Kitchen kept up his touch around the big sticks – having booted at least a goal in every game this season – with a team-best three goals, while Daniel Riosa was best on ground.
e Warriors remain fourth on the ladder.
In division 2, there were mammoth wins for Wyndhamvale, Manor Lakes and ladder leader Glenorden, with all three clubs farewelling soon-to-be division 3 outfits in a merciless fashion.
Paul O’Shea was unstoppable with 14 goals for Wyndhamvale in a 159-point smashing of Braybrook;MatthewSparksbootedsevengoals in Glenorden’s 132-point romp over Laverton Magpies, while Manor Lakes spread the load
with 16 individual goalkickers in a 182-point trouncing of North Sunshine.
In Victorian Amateur Football Association division 4, Westbourne Grammarians came back from the dead to beat Box Hill North by 26 points and keep its finals flame flickering.
e Warriors vaulted into fi h, two games and percentage out of the four, when they overturned a massive 33-point three-quarter-time deficit by scoring 9.5 to 0.0 in the last quarter.
Tim Rogers was named best on ground for the Warriors, while Arnel Davis and Justin Johns kicked four goals apiece.
Still reeling from a shock loss to Corio a week earlier, Werribee Centrals could ill afford to drop points to Geelong West in the Geelong and District Football League.
Star forward Tyren Montebruno did everything in his powers to ensure the seventh-placed Centurions did not slide further down the standings by wowing the home fans at Galvin Park in a 39-point win on Saturday. Five goals to Daniel Boyd meant it was far from a one-man show.
e Centurions this week play Anakie.

By Lance Jenkinson
Sanctuary Lakes coach Nick Waddell will not pre-empt whether the Western Region Football League’s decision to split its senior section into three tiers will prove a positive move for his club or the league.
e Sharks and five other clubs will be used as guinea pigs in the formative stages of a new division 3 competition.
A er this week’s round of matches, the Sharks will join Albanvale, Braybrook, Laverton Magpies, Tarneit and North Sunshine in the six-team third division, while the top eight clubs will fight it out for the division 2 flag and promotion to the top flight.
Waddell said it was hard to form an opinion until he saw how the drop to a third division impacted the club this offseason.
“It’s going to be a matter of whether we can
recruit guys to come to a division 3 club,’’ he said. “Some of our kids may get poached to play at a higher level.”
All clubs entered the season with the understanding that the WRFL would split into three divisions. A distinct line would be drawn between the top eight and the bottom six in division 2.
It’s funny how it panned out, with the top eight sides proving far superior to the bottom six after each side played once.
“There’s no grey area with the bottom six and the top eight,” Waddell said.
“The best eight are definitely there; they’re recruited the best and have easily spent the most money. They’re clearly ahead of the bottom six.”
The Sharks, an expansion club in their second season of senior footy, took a conservative path. Instead of spending up to keep hold of their division 2 position, they
let the natural evolution process take place. Waddell and the committee refused to “liquidate” the club’s future on silly short-term contracts in the search for instant gratification.
“ ey’ve [the top eight] spent money on the wanting to stay up, but it’s not the way we wanted to do it,” Waddell said. “We want to build the club the right way.

“I’ve had most of these kids for a long time through the junior ranks, whether that be Altona, Point Cook or even coaching against them,” Waddell said.
“Most of them are 19 to 20 and they’re not there for the money, they’re there to play with their mates.
“ ey love training, they love keeping fit and doing work outside of footy.
“ ey saw an opportunity to build a footy club from scratch.”

City West Falcons had soared into rarefied air in the Victorian Netball League this season, but it all means nothing now.
An undefeated regular season and direct passage to the grand final just made the fall harder to accept when the Falcons were rocked 48-42 by Southern Saints at the State Netball and Hockey Centre last Wednesday.
Falcons coach Marg Lind and her players were stunned a er their quest for perfection this year and a premiership three-peat was scuppered in an hour of netball.
“ ey have been the standout team all year,” Lind said.
“To lose the last one, which is always the most important, is pretty devastating.”
e Falcons le their worst performance of the season to last.
eir inability to force turnovers on defence was costly, with the Saints attackers doing as they pleased.
e Falcons’ staple – scoring and lots of it –was sadly absent. eir average goals per game heading into the grand final was 58, but they fell well short of that mark at the big dance.

“We’ve been allowed to compete a little bit more this year and tonight we weren’t allowed to compete. at was very disappointing.”
e Falcons had three teams reach grand finals – 19-and-under, division 1 and championship – and all three lost. e players seemed shell-shocked by the horror end to an otherwise brilliant season.
“ eir faces said it all,” Lind said.

When Ryan Tout le Werribee three years ago to take up an assistant coaching position in the Hockey Victoria men’s premier league under former Olympian Travis Brooks, it was always planned as a boomerang move.
Tout had long envisioned a future as coach of the Werribee men’s team, but needed to be equipped with the tools to get the most out of his coaching.
“Ten years ago, when I was running around coaching some junior teams, one of the senior coaches and founding members Alan Baillie said that one day I’d either be the president of the club or the senior coach,” Tout said.
“I thought president was a dumb gig, you’ve got to work too hard and there’s no glory in it, so I thought I better work hard at becoming a senior coach.
‘‘It’s a dream that I’ve had for quite a
while, so I went to Footscray to gain more experience.”
Tout has found that coaching can be a tough gig too at times, particularly when his team is losing.
eTigersareinaformslumpanddesperate not to sink deeper into the quicksand.
ey lost a heartbreaker to Brunswick at Presidents Park on Saturday – conceding two goals in the last five minutes a er fluffing a number of chances of their own – and tumbled into the bottom two.
Tout knew that implementing a new game plan, instilling a premier league approach and utilising a full squad of players would not lead to glory in year one.
But he never considered relegation an option in his first season in charge.
at’s why this Saturday’s home clash withOld Xaverians, sitting two spots above the Tigers on the ladder, is seen as a must-win

Ԃ One of the perks of my media career has been the opportunity to meet celebrities, interview them, dine with them and generally hang out with them. I will never forget meeting the likes of Dennis Lillee, Ted Whitten, John Schultz and Viv Richards. Last weekend I got to meet Ricky Ponting when he was the pre-game Werribee Football Club lunch guest. I love my cricket and have enjoyed watching him play the game, as millions have around the world. Being a champion sportsman doesn’t always mean you are a champion bloke. I am delighted to say Ricky was absolutely top shelf. He could not have been more obliging to everyone in the room, ranging from myself as MC to those who asked for photos, autographs and a quick chat. He accommodated them all with a smile. On stage he was honest, witty and entertaining, an absolute pleasure to work with – as was Kangaroos coach Brad Scott. It was a great day for the Werribee Football Club.
Ԃ Spotswood Football Club is holding a reunion for all involved in the 1984 seniors premiership season. The club will also “roast” the great Geoff Bebend, who coached the club to that premiership and in three decades –the ’80s, ’90s and ’00s. The reunion celebration is on Saturday, July 19, after the clash with Deer Park at McLean Reserve. Megan Smith is the contact for bookings at mbs.agg@ gmail.com. I am told the World Famous Spotty Disco has unearthed some ’80s classics to get the night going after the roast for “Beebs”. Bookings and inquiries: mbs.agg@gmail.com
Ԃ I am sad to report of the recent passing of George Thom. George was 88 and was well known for his cricketing achievements, particularly with the Deer Park Cricket Club. George was a kind, gentle man, who loved his family, his cricket, the Bulldogs, a beer and a bet. He was old school, and often told me about getting the daily double, rather than the quaddie or the big six. His son, Steve, has been my partner in crime in the Western Region Football League media for more than a decade. George will be missed by my family and many others, particularly in the western suburbs. I know Steve has been touched by the support he has received and really appreciates it. On his behalf, thanks.
Ԃ This is the last weekend before the split of WRFL division 2 into two divisions. I am looking forward to seeing how this pans out. I think all clubs have embraced it and will make the most of it in the next five weeks.
game for Tout and his players. “It’s a crunch game,” he said.
“ e boys came off the pitch [a er the Brunswick game] and were probably the most disappointed I’ve seen them all season in terms of not getting the win.
“I think they’ll be massively up for the game at the weekend.”
Tout is confident the game plan is starting to click but admits his team has lacked the finish in recent weeks.
He needs more goals out of the front line, led by Andrew Purcell, Sam Huxtable and Josh Pace.
Huxtable is one of the most lethal goal scorers in the competition, with 11 for the season, but has been quiet of late.
“He needs to return to his goal hitting form,” Tout said.
“He hasn’t hit many goals in the past two or three weeks.”

What effect does it have on your coaching when North Melbourne has loses?
It varies from individual to individual. We have basically had seven Kangaroos all year. I would like to think that even if North Melbourne have a good win that those boys playing for us understand that they need to keep the pressure on the Match Committee so they might be picked (by North). Some blokes are playing for their footy lives where they might be coming out of contract or be on the rookie list. Short answer is there is not a lot of fluctuation from the group but what is going on in the minds of some of the individuals might vary a bit, but I am sure it is pretty even whether North wins or loses.
How far ahead do you plan?
I like to look ahead a couple of weeks but that is not part of the communication to the playing group, for them it really is about one week at a time. Actually probably even less than that,it’s the next training sessions and getting the best out of yourself. Certainly the coaching staff looks ahead to match ups, what to do with the 23rd player things like that. Chris Gilham our opposition analyst and I will chat about possible changes and match ups. One week at a time is a cliché but it is pretty real. I plan week to week but with an eye on the month ahead particularly how we might want to structure our training and dealing with players coming back from injury, that sort of thing.
How do you stop it from being a grind and keeping the enthusiasm up in the dead of winter?
Winning is the first thing, the buoyancy that provides is immeasurable, no doubt. This month we have gone back to training two nights a week, just trying to freshen things up, make sure we have good variety. We did pancakes for dinner for the first time this year last week. We just try and throw a few different things in but not try and lose the focus of the hard work element. If it stays wet and damp we will explore other venues and will go indoors. Just a few little things and one less night a week I think will make a difference.

Western Jet Jayden Laverde has capped off a brilliant under-18 national football carnival for Vic Metro by being named in the competition’s All-Australian team.
e 189-centimetre forward impressed with his agility and smarts around goal.
He averaged 16.8 disposals at 74 per cent efficiency and five marks a game to be the only Western Jet to make the All-Australian team.
AFL talent manager Kevin Sheehan said the championships were played at a high standard and many players had put themselves forward for selection.
“Many of the players selected will be named
by clubs at the NAB AFL dra in November,” Sheehan said. “Both Victorian teams played very well throughout the carnival and they have been rewarded with 12 All-Australian players.
“South Australia were outstanding, winning division 1 back-to-back. eirs was a very even team performance and they were rewarded with four players selected.”
At the weekend, the Calder Cannons edged the Western Jets by four points in a thrilling TAC Cup contest.
e Jets trailed at every break before charging home in the last quarter, outscoring
Calder 3.5 to 2.1. But that wasn’t enough to reel in the deficit, with the Cannons able to hold on for the 10.9 (69) to 9.11 (65) win. Mark Orr, Liam McMahon and Connor Menadue were among the best players for the Jets, and were well supported by three goals from Pele Manivong. e Jets slipped to 6-6 for the season and are sixth on the ladder.
ey will look to bounce back when they take on the ninth-placed Murray Bushrangers in Wangaratta on Sunday.

Werribee Tigers coach John Lamont will not use his side’s 22-point VFL win over North Ballarat as a smokescreen to cover up its deficiencies.
e Tigers came roaring back from 16 points down at three-quarter time to steal victory a er a stunning fourth quarter from troubled forward Majak Daw.
Daw booted two late goals to clinch four premiership points and put a personally tumultuous week behind him for at least a few hours.
While the comeback catapulted the Tigers into the top four, Lamont was not thrilled at having to rely on the “get out of jail” card again.
e coach is tiring of the all-too-familiar mental lapses that allow opposition clubs to get a run on.
“I’m always happy to win, but I came away scratching my head and thinking there’s still a long way to go,” he said.
“We’re still not at the level of consistency across the 120 minutes that we’re looking for.
“If we don’t get that consistency right, some of the better teams we’re playing over the next few weeks – Collingwood, Port Melbourne and Footscray – will beat us. We’ve got to get our act together.”
Daw proved the X-factor for the Tigers, particularly late in the game.
Be it kicking his three goals, taking contested marks, bursting open a pack or attracting two defenders in the air to create crumbs, the target man was a nuisance for the Roosters’ defence.
“ e opposition would’ve been terribly nervous,’” Lamont said.
“He forces them to spoil; you can’t try and out-mark him.
“And if it’s the second bloke coming in, instead of trying to mark it they’re trying to spoil and that brings our other blokes into the game.”
Dylan Jones and Josh Porter were commended for assuming ruck duties and freeing Daw to play forward at crunch time.
Jarred Moore also received a glowing appraisal in the form of best-on-ground honours.
In typical fashion, the veteran onballer thrived on the contested ball situation.
“When there’s a bit of chaos around, he’s able to get it and put a teammate into space and give that player a bit of time to deliver the ball properly, or he’ll kick the ball well himself,” Lamont said.
Kieran Harper, Jackson Davis and Brayden Norris were prolific across the midfield for the Tigers.
Ben Warren snared four goals to lead the competition goalkicking with 28.
Addam Maric booted three, including a contender for goal of the day that gave the Tigers a last-term lead.
e Tigers could be without Sam Wormald for the road clash with Collingwood at Victoria Park on Saturday a er the defender injured his shoulder just minutes into the win over the Roosters.

e introduction of the AP5 Valiant in May 1963 was timed perfectly with Chrysler’s strengthening presence in the Australian market.
A few months before, the car maker decided to take the plunge and started stamping panels and dies at a new plant in South Australia. By the time the AP5 arrived, it was no longer a case of local assembly.
Chrysler was building the cars and the level ofAmericancontenthaddroppeddramatically.
Although most of the mechanical features of the new Valiant were carried over from the S Series, just six body panels were shared with the car’s American version. estylingoftheAP5borelittleresemblance to the R and S Series and, in fact, moved more towards the conservative look of its rival from Ford and Holden.
Tomanyobserversthiswasadisappointment, as the looks of the previous two Valiants were believed to have been Chrysler’s biggest advantage over the competition.
A er the release of the AP5 sedan in May, the Valiant Safari station wagon followed in November. Up to the rear doors, the wagon used the same panels as the sedan.
One of the main features of the Safari wagon was the rear window, controlled by an exterior handle. e window could be wound down to any position, but it had to be wound down fully before the tailgate could be opened.
While standard equipment was similar to the previous models, the AP5 was sold for a lower price than the R and S Series.

For the first time since the Valiant was introduced, Chrysler marketed a separate, more luxurious model to bring the car-maker in line with Holden and Ford, which sold the Premier and Futura as their up-scale variants.
eValiantRegalwasimmediatelyidentified by its exterior badging, including a raised emblem on the bonnet and a Regal badge on
the boot of the sedan as well as whitewall tyres, chrome body mouldings, window trims and different wheel covers.
Inside the Regal the seats were padded and trimmed in a so vinyl, while the interior body side panels were also in vinyl and colour matched to the seats to give it more of an upmarket feel. It also had folding centre arm
rests for both the front and rear bench seats, carpeted floors, two-tone steering wheel and a heater and demister.
In total 49,440 AP5 Valiants were produced before the AP6 was introduced in 1965. Late in 1962 Chrysler announced a $36 million expansion plan that would eventually li production to 50,000 cars a year by 1967.

Since the Torana, Holden has had a stream of unremarkable medium cars such as the Camira (remembered for all the wrong reasons), Apollo and Epica (Google it), which never enjoyed the popularity of the big and small cars that bookended the range.
Holding up the middle these days is the Malibu, whichisn’tahouseholdnamebuto ers Holden a decent bridge between the Cruze and Commodore, and is a unique addition to its class. at said, it’s not much smaller than the Commodore and accommodates the average family quite well.
with the Commodore. But while the Australian car has more owing lines, the Chevrolet-built Malibu looks a little more ’70s classic, with a blingy front and square tail lights.

e Malibu has plenty of features that make it a standout in its price range. ey include a MyLink system with Bluetooth connectivity, trip computer, rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, six airbags and electric handbrake.
e top-of-the-range CDX model I drove also has rain-sensing windscreen wipers, leather interior with heated and electric front seats and excellent lumbar adjustment.
ere’s plenty of storage options inside the cabin and the boot space is huge – bigger than the VF Commodore.
e front-wheel-drive Malibu is an elegant car to drive. It feels smooth in normal conditions. And while there’s not a heap of power under the bonnet, the 2.4-litre engine is more than adequate.
e six-speed automatic gearbox does the job smoothly. It has a semi-automatic action which uses a couple of buttons on top of the gear knob. It isn’t as intuitive as other cars that let you move the gear stick like a manual lever. I couldn’t quite work out how to use it.
eMalibuisn’ttheleaderofthemedium-car pack, but it certainly represents excellent value for its class.

Outside, there’s no mistaking its relationship
And unlike the Commodore, this is one Holden you can justify sticking a Chevy badge on.
