Suburb name settled

Wyndham’s newest suburb, which will be home to 15,000 people and 58,000 jobs, finally has a name.

VictorianPlanningMinisterMatthew Guy told Star Weekly the state government had chosen East Werribee as the name for the largest commercial precinct to be created on government owned land in Victoria’s history.

“I think that’s the name we’re going to settle on, East Werribee,” Mr Guy said.

“ e council wanted Werribee; the MPA [Metropolitan Planning Authority] had some other ideas but I think for now that’s a sensible mid-way.”

AslateasOctoberlastyear,Victorian Premier Denis Napthine said he didn’t like the name East Werribee.

“I think East Werribee describes the area well, but perhaps we could use a bit more innovation and imagination,” Mr Napthine said.

A public competition was held to find a name for the area, but Mr Guy saidnothingbetterthanEastWerribee had been suggested.

“To be honest, the best thing that came through was East Werribee.

“It [East Werribee] is accurate and it gives recognition to where the site is.

“ ere was a range of names, but they probably didn’t suit the site.” Wyndham council’s sustainable development director, Dean Rochfort, said the council supported the announcement.

“ e state government’s decision to formally adopt the name East Werribee is in line with Wyndham

City’s submission on the suburb naming,” Mr Rochfort said. “ e name East Werribee highlights the close and complementary relationship the employment precinct has with the Werribee City Centre.”

But Wyndham residents were not as happy with the chosen name.

“If that’s the best name they could come up with then I don’t think they were trying very hard,” Stuart, of Hoppers Crossing, said.

“I think something completely different would have been better.

‘‘ East Werribee is accurate and it gives recognition to where the site is ’’ -MatthewGuy

e name Werribee brings negative connotations that it would have been good to avoid.”

Susanne said: “I live in Werribee and I like it, but the name is not the best.”

“ erearesomanyotherthingsthey could have called it.

‘‘East Werribee is not the most original name, plus we already have Werribee South.’’

Daniel,ofWerribee,saidhelikedthe name.

“It makes sense to call it East Werribee because that’s where it is,” he said. “People are always trying to get rid of the name Werribee for some reason, but we should be proud of it.

“Just by changing the name to something else doesn’t change the fact that you live here.”

Rate hike to put businesses on struggle street

About 4000 Wyndham property owners have been warned that their council rates could increase by more than 20 per cent.

Wyndhamcouncilhaswrittentocommercial and industrial land owners informing them that due to recent property valuations they could see a spike in their rates.

A property owner who received one of the notices told Star Weekly that businesses would struggle to absorb the costs.

“I can tell you now that the current economic climate is not good, especially in retail, and tenants are going to say, ‘How can I pay an

extra 20 per cent?’” the property owner said. “We want to know how they came up with that rate rise.

“Also, as far as we know, only people who will have a rate rise of more than 20 per cent have received one of these letters, so we don’t even know about the people who have rises of around 19 per cent.”

Wyndhamcouncil’ssustainabledevelopment director, Dean Rochfort, confirmed that 4000 landowners had been sent the notices.

“ ere has been no change in Wyndham City’s rating structure this financial year in

‘‘
’’

calculating rates on commercial and industrial properties,” Mr Rochfort said.

“On average, commercial and industrial properties in Wyndham have seen an increase in their valuation, but this is not across the board and properties are reviewed on a case by case basis.”

Daw charged with rape

Werribee and North Melbourne footballer Majak Daw has been charged with three counts of rape relating to an alleged sexual assault in Altona Meadows in 2007.

Detectives filed a charges summons at court on Monday and Daw was expected to be served with a summons yesterday.

Fairfax Media reported earlier this month that Daw, who played his junior football with Wyndham Vale Falcons, had been arrested and interviewed in May over offences allegedly committed in 2007.

Daw, 23, has reportedly denied the allegations.

North Melbourne said it would support Daw and he would remain available for AFL and VFL selection.

Werribee Football Club chief executive Mark Penaluna said Daw was a “required player” and would be selected by the club if he was available.

A police spokeswoman confirmed detectives from the sex crimes unit had charged a Wyndham Vale man, 23, with three counts of rape.

A filing hearing is scheduled for July 11.

“ e charges relate to an alleged historical assault in Altona North in 2007. As the matter is before the courts, Victoria Police will not be making any further comment,” the spokeswoman said.

Wyndham resident Richard Deng, who moved to Australia from Sudan three years ago, said he was disappointed to hear the news.

“Everyone loves Majak. He has opened many doors for Sudanese people and it is like any local hero – you don’t want to see them fall from grace,” Mr Deng said.

“At this stage he is still innocent, though, until it’s proven otherwise. He is still Majak.’’ Daw, the first Sudanese-born player to play AFL, joined North Melbourne as a rookie in 2010 and plays with the Werribee Tigers when not in the senior Kangaroos side.

With e Age

Mr Rochfort said other Wyndham residents would actually see the amount they pay in rates go down. “In contrast to the approximately 4000 ratepayers who may experience a rate rise of 20 per cent or more, 26,000 ratepayers will experience a decrease in their rates and an additional 33,000 ratepayers will experience an increase of less than 5 per cent.

“An increase in property valuations can be taken as a positive sign, as it indicates there is rising demand for property in Watton Street.”

Wyndham pensioners and retirees have urged the council to consider lowering their rates to ease their financial burden. e municipality’s retirement villages made a submission on the council’s proposed 2014-15 budget, asking it to consider creating a differential rate for their homeowners.

e group, led by Tarneit Skies Retirement Village, argued that retirement village residents did not use the same facilities as other ratepayers.

Spokesman Graeme Dowlan told a council meeting last Wednesday the villages provided most of the services needed by their residents. He urged the council to provide “rate relief” to homeowners who were pensioners or self-funded retirees by offering a rating differential.

Point Cook pensioner Elizabeth Simpson also urged the council to reconsider its rates, saying they were her highest expense. “I’m on a fixed income and my council rates are my highest outlayat$4.01aday,almostfivetimesmy daily costs of cooking, water heating and general heating,” she said. “It’s an amount I can’t control. I can reduce my electricity consumption but not my rates.” e submissions were among 13 made on the budget.

Others included a request for funding for new courts and lights at Cambridge Tennis Club, money for this year’s Weerama Festival and support for a food court and multi-level car park near Werribee or Hoppers Crossing station. e council will consider the submissions before adopting its final budget on July 7.

No extra trains for busiest lines

Werribee, Williamstown and Altona line commuters have again missed out on new train services, despite the number of daily passengers increasing by more than 2000 over the past three years.

Freedom of information documents reveal that since 2011, the number of passengers travelling through the Werribee corridor daily has risen by 2028 people – the greatest increase in passenger numbers in Melbourne.

At the same time, the group of lines has recorded a 36 per cent increase in overcrowded

morning services. e FOI documents from Public Transport Victoria show that in May 2011, the group had 11 overcrowded trains between 8am and 9am. In May 2013, overcrowding had spread to 15 services between 8am and 9am.

However, only two new services have been added since 2011. e group of lines was again overlookedlastweekwhenthestategovernment announced that services on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines would increase by 50 per cent from this month.

Loyalty cuts both ways

ey say cats have nine lives, but one very lucky dog may be able to lay claim to that as well.

Graham Soawyer, of Hamilton, was distraught when his loyal, beloved Rhodesian Ridgeback Labrador cross Ziggy was hit by a car a little over a week ago.

He took Ziggy to his local vet and was referred to the University of Melbourne Veterinary Hospital.

Dr Katherine Mitchell said that, among a long list of injuries, the nine-year-old dog was suffering from multiple severe fractures to her pelvis.

In an operation of several hours, Ziggy received screws and pins in her pelvis and was required to spend seven days recovering in the hospital.

DrMitchellsaidthetreatmentZiggyreceived was very complicated and uncommon.

“A lot of dogs are killed or very badly

injured in car accidents of this magnitude. Ziggy managed to survive the initial impact, but it le her with high-velocity injuries,” Dr Mitchell said.

“Not every owner is willing to undertake the extensive post-operative nursing requirements needed for these patients.”

For weeks a er her operation, Mr Soawyer will be required to help Ziggy get around by supporting her back legs with a towel, stopping her from putting any pressure on them.

But he said he was just happy she was going to be OK.

“She’s a very loyal, affectionate and personable dog,” he said. “It’s the old story that she’s just part of the family.”

Western Metropolitan Greens MP Colleen Hartland said more services and signalling improvements were needed on the Werribee line. “ e west has the fastest-growing populationyettheworstpublictransport.More train services are needed urgently to meet the rising demand and reduce overcrowding.

“ eGreenswillupgradethetrainsignalling system. It … will allow for 50 per cent more trains to run on the existing infrastructure.”

Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Andrew

Elsbury said Wyndham had not been overlooked, and bus services would increase by 130 trips a week. He said buses would better co-ordinatewithtrainstoincreasetraveloptions. Nine bus routes will receive extended evening services on weeknights and weekends, and, for the first time, Sunday services will be introduced on routes 441 and 445. Routes 436-449, serving Werribee and Hoppers Crossing stations, have been revised. Public Transport Minister Terry Mulder did not respond to questions about why no new train services had been added to the Werribee lines before the Star Weekly went to print.

Tip mountain ‘a battle lost, war to be won’

Wyndham council has been given the tick of approval for its controversial tip mountain.

e Environment Protection Authority (EPA) ruled last week that the council could build its landfill at the Werribee refuse disposal facility to a height of 24 metres.

e EPA said in a statement that it had assessed the height of the tip on an environmental-risk basis and found that it was safe. “We had 670 community submissions

and held community meetings to canvass local concern, which was primarily regarding the height of the cell,” the statement read.

“EPA has assessed that the application met the requirements of the act, waste management policies and state environment protection policies (SEPPs). e application also met the requirement of the Waste Management Policy.”

Western Region Environment Centre director Harry van Moorst told Star Weekly he

was disappointed by the EPA’s decision. “We are really angry that they only judged it on an environmental risk basis because we have a letter from the EPA stating that they will look at the issue of height as a visual amenity and listen to the community’s concerns.

“Not only have they set a precedent for all the other cells at Werribee, they have set a precedent for the height of cells anywhere else.”

Mr van Moorst said he believed it was not

too late for the council to reduce the height of the tip, and his group would be challenging the EPA’s decision.

“We think it’s outrageous and we’re going to do whatever we can to make sure this doesn’t happen,” he said.

“ is is a battle that we’ve lost but a war that we’re going to win.”

Tigers call for upgrade funding

For six years, the Werribee Tigers have been waiting for Wyndham council to redevelop Chirnside Park to make it VFL-compliant.

e club’s Avalon Airport Oval base fails to meet the competition’s basic requirements around female and umpire changerooms, seating and accessibility.

e ground floor of the ageing clubrooms houses a small, dark gymnasium and a changeroom and shower for umpires, which double as storage space.

Every match day, committee members must move seven exercise bikes in the gym which block access to the changeroom and shower.

e ground has no dedicated female changerooms, no canteen and no li to its first-floor social room, meaning disabled fans must be carried up the stairs.

e club is urging the council to include $5.5 million in this year’s budget to redevelop Chirnside Park.

e council’s proposed budget includes $122,000 to complete designs for the project.

Tigers chief executive, Mark Penaluna, said the facility also had public safety issues and did not meet current building code requirements.

“A new facility would see further potential for the club to improve its delivery of club and volunteer development opportunities, such as local club accreditation programs.”

In September, 2012, the council voted to scope options for the redevelopment of Chirnside Park, saying the expansion could allow Wyndham to bid to host football finals, NAB Challenge matches, Big Bash cricket, A-League soccer and Super Rugby practice matches.

Atthetime, theTigerssaidtheredevelopment was crucial in their efforts to compete with AFL clubs Geelong and Collingwood, which both field stand-alone VFL teams.

Last week, the council’s acting chief executive, Kelly Grigsby, said it was seeking funding commitments from the Tigers and the AFL before deciding on its preferred plan for the redevelopment. She said the council would also seek state government support for the project.

Is our ‘moving’ campaign actually moving?, Kevin Hillier asks

Is “Get Wyndham Moving” actually moving anything? I received an e-mail the other day telling me all the latest information, but is anything actually happening?

I’m increasingly of the belief that this campaign is all talk and not much action. And in this case, talk isn’t cheap.

My concern here is that this is a campaign that makes it look like something is being done, when actually nothing is changing at all. Is this just another bureaucratic exercise? It certainly is not up there with the toxic dump in terms of action based on public support.

Some feedback regarding some recent columns: Every e-mail I received regarding telemarketers was critical of the timing, the approach and the nuisance value of these calls. I am told you can sign up to a Do Not Call register – donotcall.gov.au – and it works the same way as the Do Not Knock signs at your home. Really? Why do I have to register to stop people trying to sell me services or goods that I don’t want to know about?

Ferry link for Wyndham

Werribee South will soon be home to a ferry that will run to and from the city, Planning Minister Matthew Guy has revealed.

Mr Guy said that within 12 months a ferry linking Melbourne’s west to the Melbourne CBD would ease congestion on the West Gate Bridge.

He said the final stages of negotiation were taking place, and a ticket on the boat would include a free tram ride.

“ ey will run it out of Wyndham Harbour into the city [and] it will land at Docklands,” he said.

“And the beneficial point from that is … from January 1 next year the trams will be free.

“So effectively you’ll pay for the ferry ticket and that’s it.”

Mr Guy said the ferry trip would take 40 minutes and carry about 200 people.

“ e concept of driving to a terminal, getting on, 40 minutes of a Wi-Fi [enabled] ship getting into Docklands is certainly attractive compared to sitting on the West Gate,” he said.

He added they were looking at stops at Point Cook and Altona.

“I’m tremendously excited because this is something people have talked about for years and I can finally see it happening.”

Get tough on activists: farmer

WithhispropertytargetedlastFridaymorning, a Werribee South egg farmer has begun calling forthestategovernmenttogettoughonanimal activists who break into farms and endanger people’s livelihood.

Brian Ahmed, who is also the Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) egg group president, rushed to his K Avenue farm about 1am on June 27 to nd two women on his property.

Mr Ahmed and his brother, who lives on the farm, called police, who caught the intruders with the help of the dog squad.

e women have been released and are expected to be charged on summons.

Mr Ahmed said the women broke the doors to the farm’s sheds, which house 25,000 caged chickens. While he was concerned about the damage to his property, Mr Ahmed said he was more worried about the farm’s biosecurity measures being breached.

“ ere is a high-risk level of the birds catching disease. We keep them locked up in sheds to reduce the risks,” Mr Ahmed said.

“In November, there was a major avian u breakout in NSW and 500,000 birds had to be culled.”

Mr Ahmed will spend the coming days having his chickens checked by vets to ensure they are disease free.

He said any chickens that had been infected would have to be culled.

“Animal activists say they are trying to rescue the chickens, but they are endangering

the lives of the very birds they are trying to free. We do everything by the law and everything in the best interest of our birds.

“We ran a free-range farm, but we changed for a number of reasons, including to reduce disease and parasites.”

Mr Ahmed said the VFF was lobbying the governmenttotoughenthelawsaroundanimal activism and breaking into farms. He said the rules needed to be strengthened to protect all farmers and their animals from attacks.

House sales ‘spin’

[Re: Point Cook remains hot property, Star Weekly, June 25] There may have been many sales over a year, but that “spin” does not excuse the fact that there are still more than 5000 homes for sale or rent in Wyndham right now! That is, potentially, 10,000-plus people leaving Wyndham!

Being “close to the city” is not a selling point for Point Cook any more because we all know that you can’t get out of, or into, Point Cook at peak times without great frustration.

The statistics that would reveal the truth are those that show how long homes in Point Cook stay on the market before they sell, and how many times they have gone on and off the market. $470,000 is not an

“affordable” house price; it’s a loan default just waiting to happen!

Anyone who buys in Point Cook right now expecting to work in the city is making a big mistake as the infrastructure isn’t going to improve significantly, even with the Sneydes Road interchange. Fine if you work in Werribee or Geelong, but not otherwise.

Money well spent

[Re: Council cops junket blast, Star Weekly] In the overall scheme of things, $10,000 is not a lot of money. It sounds like many councils were there and there was an opportunity to meet government ministers. In my opinion, it is money well spent if it makes government aware of Wyndham’s issues.

Joe Garra, via Facebook

I was happy to meet with and facilitate meetings for the Wyndham council

representatives that travelled to Canberra recently. I was pleased to host the National Growth Areas Alliance breakfast attended by about 12 ALP MPs representing high-growth local council areas across Australia. This meeting discussed important issues such as road funding, the provision of community facilities and public transport at a national level. I was also able to facilitate important meetings for council representatives with opposition communication spokesman Jason Clare, to discuss the provision of broadband locally, and with education spokeswoman Kate Ellis, to discuss the impact of the Abbott government’s cuts to kindergarten funding. It was with great disappointment that your paper chose such a flippant approach to this visit. I would like to reassure readers that their council representatives worked hard during their visit and the ministers are well aware where Wyndham is.

Joanne Ryan, Lalor MP

Wyndham City spends relatively little on travel, attending conferences and lobbying. Frankly, I think we could benefit as a city if councillors got out a bit more.

That said, I’ve been on countless trips –often at my own expense – for conferencing and advocacy purposes. I’ve argued with government agencies for years about their inability to get value for money on such trips. Around $10,000 for plane fares, three nights’ accommodation, food and incidentals looks about standard practice to me, and big business usually spends more than governments. If I were organising it, I would be unhappy if it cost more than about $3000, but I’m not sure all of my fellow travellers would want to “junket” in

backpackers’ digs. With good organisation, a very comfortable trip for four people to Canberra should be able to be organised for about $5000 but I have never come across a government agency or large business that seems capable of doing that.

Whatever the cost, I think the use of the term “junket” is most unhelpful as it suggests that these trips are something like a holiday and without serious purpose.

Bro Sheffield-Brotherton, via web Infrastructure ads ‘a waste’

How many hundreds of thousands of dollars is the state government wasting taking out whole-page ads in local and daily papers just to let us know what a great job they’re going to do on transport infrastructure? Firstly, they should not be wasting money in that way. It would be better spent on providing new bus services to areas lacking in public transport, such as Wyndham.

Secondly, it’s blatantly dishonest. They are not reporting the time frames in which they anticipate to start and complete the projects. The rail links are not expected to be started, yet alone completed, for years, and yet the ridiculously expensive roads will commence in the near future – forcing more people, not fewer, into cars, which will cause increased congestion in other areas.

History still up for sale

A prime piece of Werribee real estate went under the hammer last ursday, but despite a bid of $2 million it could not be sold.

FirstNationalRealEstateWestwoodheldthe auction for 17 and 17A Bridge Street, Werribee. At a massive 2150 square metres, the block included a rundown weatherboard house and a wide driveway leading to a rear workshop.

Bob Westwood, managing director of First National Westwood, told Star Weekly he was con dent the property would sell privately for about $2.5 million.

“We’re not too concerned that it didn’t sell at auction today,” Mr Westwood said. “ is is an absolutely blue ribbon development property, and it will sell.”

Avendorbidof$2millionledtotheproperty being passed in.

Mr Westwood said he had lived in Werribee about 40 years and would like to see the property become a part of the growing CBD. He estimated it would cost about $5 million for a developer to build an ideal mixed-use building on the site.

“It has every opportunity to have a number of levels of residential properties on top of a few levels of shops and o ces.

“We’ve got to start making more use of the CBD because at the moment it’s somewhat contained. We need to go up rather than out.”

Mr Westwood said the rear section of the land was last used as a workshop for STA Transport about 10 years ago.

It was also the house of former Wyndham mayor Ted Dowling. “ is is a piece of history,” Mr Westwood said. “Ted was one of the most prominent and respected members of the community and he was a great initiator of development in the area.”

Growth area funding ‘unfair’

Melbourne’s growth area councils received just7percentoftheinfra-structurefunding included in this year’s state budget – down from an 18 per cent share two years ago.

e drop in funding has prompted the Interface Councils from municipalities around Melbourne’s urban fringe to hold a series of public meetings to demand fairer funding for their communities.

e group of 10 councils said it was unfair that interface municipalities received only 7 per cent funding for infrastructure despite hosting close to half of Victoria’s population growth in the past ve years.

Interface Councils spokesman and Wyndham mayor Bob Fairclough said the state budget was inequitable. Negative impacts of growth without nancial support could create an irreversible “downward spiral” if allowed to continue.

“ is translates to an $810 million shortfall in the outer suburban, Interface Council areas,” Cr Fairclough said.

“And that means the Interface Council areas have been short-changed four new buildings for early childhood centres, 10 new secondary schools, three new TAFE campuses and ve new hospitals, and they’re unable to cater for more than 9000 new public service users.”

Duo shoots for big time

Two Hoppers Crossing music lovers are hoping to win a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that could have them travelling the world and entertaining thousands of people.

Natasha Roman and Ronin Wahab make up Equalibrium, a DJ duo selected as nalists in Your Shot, a national competition that o ers young people the chance to become professional record scratchers.

Entrants are given six weeks of full DJ training before the best performers from each state are chosen to play sets at national and international events – an opportunity that could pave their way to musical fame.

With similar tastes in music, Roman and Ronin Wahab say they’re hoping their duo act will help them stand out from the crowd.

And while their university degrees take rst priority – Wahab is studying electrical engineering and commerce at RMIT, while Roman is studying agriculture and animal science at Melbourne University – they both says being professional DJs is their dream career.

“Being a DJ is the rst step, but I think to be successful in the industry you need to produce songs,” Wahab says. “All the most successful people in the industry write and produce songs oftheirownandIthinkthat’swhatwe’dliketo do a er this.”

HURRY, ENDS SOON

Studentsat omasCarrCollegewillswaptheir cosy beds for the gym floor later this month to get a hint of what it’s like to be homeless.

e ‘winter sleepout’, organised by the school’s Young Vinnies Group, will have more than 100 students spending a cold night in the school’s gym to raise money for Vinnies’ work with homeless people.

Year 10 student Alex Oakes, helping organise the sleepout, says it will be a “real eye-opener”.

“It exposes us to what daily life is like for homeless people,” he said.

“We live it for a day, but they might live it for a lifetime.”

e event includes dinner from a soup van, and trivia and shelter-building competitions.

Year 11 student Emily Cassar said spending a night on the gym floor was a difficult experience.

“It’s very different to what we’re used to,” he said. “ e gym floor can’t compete with a mattress and Sheridan sheets.”

e college’s social justice co-ordinator, Joanna Grujovski, said students would get a chance to hear from someone who had spent time living on the streets.

“He has been without a home and knows what it’s like not to have a key to a front door,” she said. “I hope the students will be touched by his experience.”

Farmer spreads the health word

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is exactly the message one Werribee South farmer is trying to spread.

Sachi Rudolph used to work as a personal trainer and lived in Southbank before moving to Werribee South with her farmer husband two years ago.

Since then she has set up a fruit and vegetable shop, FarmFresh2U, where people can buy produce directly from the people who grow it.

Children are even encouraged to visit the Rudolphs’ farm and try healthy food for free.

“ e kids get to come down and see the process and how we grow all the healthy fruit and vegies,” Ms Rudolph says.

“I want to supply our local community with freshproduceandeducatethemonwhatthey’re eating at the same time.”

But now Ms Rudolph is taking her healthy mission to another level, sharing food for free with people who can’t afford it.

Every week she donates le -over fruit and vegetables and as much as other farmers in the area are willing to give to OzHarvest, a charity that distributes fresh produce to people in need all over Melbourne.

Last week alone, Ms Rudolph donated close to one tonne of fresh and healthy food.

“We take so much for granted here in Australia and I think people turn a blind eye because they don’t see the poverty,” she said.

“People who are struggling deserve quality and healthy food, too. ey shouldn’t have to

eat scraps.” While she is working on getting other Werribee South farms on board, Ms Rudolph says her dream is to make her mission an international movement.

As a member of Wyndham’s newest emerging refugee community, Misagh Zamani has always had to be opportunistic to get what he wants.

e 21-year-old Persian was unable to join a conservatorium to learn how to play the piano in his birth country.

Ratherthangiveuponhisdreamhemanaged to convince two teachers at the conservatorium to teach him privately.

Although he’s now an accomplished classical pianist, being from the Bahá’í faith Mr Zamani was not allowed to study at university or obtain any job in the mainly Islamic Iran, so he knew he had to look abroad.

He travelled to Turkey, where he lived for almost two years before coming to Australia seven months ago.

Mr Zamani moved to Hoppers Crossing and began learning English. He now dreams of studying science and biotechnology, specialising in genetics and cloning.

“When I arrived here I was not very excited because I didn’t know anyone and I missed my family,” Mr Zamani said.

“Now I know people with the same background as me. I know life is good in Australia and I think I can progress quickly here.”

Chief executive of the Werribee Community and Education Centre Jennie Barerra said Persians made up the newest group of refugees in Wyndham, with the in ux starting just over a year ago.

We have about 350 asylum seekers in Wyndham and most of them are from Iran,” Ms Barerra said. “ e recent arrival of Persians adds a level of diversity that we haven’t had in this city before.”

MY WYNDHAM

Former councillor Jim Giddings is passionate about Wyndham and road safety, writes Rebecca Miller

Almost 40 years a er moving to Hoppers Crossing, Jim Giddings has found there’s still plenty to love about Wyndham.

What’s your connection to the local community?

My volunteering started with Apex, Blue Light Discos and the Weerama Festival. I was a Werribee councillor for nearly 10 years and held the portfolio for transport until December 1994 when council amalgamations began. In 1995, I was appointed chairman of the Wyndham Transport Advisory Committee by Wyndham council and remained in that voluntary capacity for 18 years. Now, I’m chairman of RoadSafe Westgate community road safety council and have been a member since 1990. e road safety group’s role is to advocate for road safety and implement road safety programs across the west.

Where’s your favourite retreat spot?

Werribee South foreshore and the mouth of Werribee River. I enjoy walking along the foreshore, listening to the sea and admiring the wildlife and scenery.

What’s your favourite eatery?

Mondells Patisserie & Café in Watton Street. I o en meet there with family for breakfast and have an omelette with the lot and a good espresso. We can share a meal together while supporting local businesses. For takeaway, you can’t go wrong with Watton Vietnamese Takeaway in Watton Street for great value and good food.

What would you change in your neighbourhood?

People’s attitudes to road safety. More students

and young people need access to best-practice programs, including Fit2Drive and Looking A er Our Mates. Both programs incorporate young people having the capacity to change attitudesrelatingtoriskydrivingandhelpthem take ownership for their own and their peers’ safety on the road. is goes hand in hand with a lack of infrastructure funding and services,

such as public transport. Funding needs to increase to provide these services to meet the rapid growth we have been experiencing for 10 years.

What wouldn’t you change? e community of volunteers. Wyndham has anarmyofthemwhomakethemselvesavailable to bene t others who have real needs and at the same time enhance the local community.

Road link will be safer

Safety has been improved at one of Wyndham’s most notorious intersections following an $11 million upgrade to link Forsyth and Palmers roads. Williams Landing developers Cedar Woods constructed a new intersection at Forsyth Road, extended Ashcroft Avenue and built an Overton Road link to improve safety on Wyndham’s most congested thoroughfare, Forsyth Road. The works will improve traffic flow and safety between Hoppers Crossing and Truganina. Wyndham councillor Glenn Goodfellow said the works were necessary because Williams Landing was one of Wyndham’s fastest-growing areas. Cedar Woods state manager Nathan Blackburne said the intersection was the only western access to Williams Landing. Laura Michell

Baby’s legacy behind mum’s run

A Seabrook woman whose daughter died in utero last July is helping other “mums of angels” by raising money for a charity close to her heart.

Katherine Currie and her husband Steve will take part in next month’s Run Melbourne event in honour of their girl, Melinda.

In 2011, they lost their son, Jonathon Fulton, at 18 weeks gestation. Ms Currie said it took courage to fall pregnant again, which she did in October, 2012. “It was a stressful pregnancy – constant nausea and fear – but Melinda grew perfectly and we were very excited for her arrival, with induction booked for July 26, 2013,” Ms Currie said.

However, on July 17 she woke and didn’t feel any movement in her womb.

“We rushed to Werribee Mercy Hospital, where it was con rmed she had died. I couldn’t believe it had happened again. I was induced that day and Melinda Grace Currie arrived silently at 8.45 that night.

“I may be biased, but she was the most beautiful baby I had ever laid eyes on – on par with our rst-born daughter, Elianna.”

Melinda’s death was caused by the umbilical cord being wrapped tightly around her neck and body.

e following weekend, Run Melbourne was on. Ms Currie watched the runners and decided to join them the following year in honour of Melinda.

ree weeks later she started training.

“Running became a release for me, an opportunity to rebuild my body and my strength. In a way it helped me battle the feelings of failure and betrayal I felt about my body where my baby had died on my watch.

“I was determined that Melinda would

leave a legacy of strength and inspiration, not breakdown.”

Part of Melinda’s legacy is a program at Werribee Mercy Hospital where big brothers and sister of babies who have died receive a so toy to cuddle and love.

To continue Melinda’s positive impact in the world, Ms Currie and her husband will support the charity River’s Gi with funds raisedfromtheirrun.River’sGi ,whichraises money for SIDS research and awareness, was established in 2011 by a couple who lost their four-month-old son, River Jak Adam.

“A er meeting River’s mum, Alexandra, in my online support group for mums of angels, I was so inspired by her and her husband

‘‘ She was the most beautiful baby I had ever laid eyes on ’’ - Katherine Currie

Karl’s determination to build an amazing legacy in their son’s name,” Ms Currie said.

“ e loss of babies to stillbirth or SIDS is such a taboo subject in society at large and as a result we can o en feel isolated and ostracised, but through fund-raising events such as this we are given a platform to share our stories and honour our babies’ memories.”

Ms Currie and her husband are also embarking to raise $4000 for a cold cuddle cot to be donated in Melinda’s memory to Werribee Mercy Hospital. Cold cuddle cots allow families to spend time with their stillborn or otherwise deceased babies.

Story turns out all write

omas McPherson believes writing a great short story is like shopping for the perfect gi .

“You spend weeks thinking of good ideas but it maybe takes only an hour or so to get the job done,” he says.

It’s a theory that has served the Werribee resident well.

Last week, he was announced as the winner of the Banjo Patterson Writing Award, earning him $10,000 and a 150th anniversary

Banjo Paterson commemorative coin from the Australian Mint.

Mr McPherson entered his short story, Cricket Woes, in the NSW Central West Libraries Competition, seeking feedback to improve his writing. He never imagined he’d win.

“I graduated from uni last year and wanted to be a writer, but I didn’t major in professional writing,” he said. ‘‘I thought I’d enter some writing competitions to get feedback about my work and improve my writing.

“I thought that starting with short stories would be a good way to get feedback because I wouldn’t have to spend a year on the writing process.”

Mr McPherson says he drew the inspiration for his short story from his own childhood.

“It’s about boys playing sport with men and realising it’s a man’s game,” he said. “When I was 14, my dad asked me to fill in for his team and I really got into it. I played a couple of games and trained hard but got dropped for men who hadn’t been training.”

Food appeal to help homeless

Wyndham residents are being encouraged to put an extra tin of tuna, jar of pasta sauce or packet of biscuits in their trolley the next time they are at the supermarket to help make winter easier for Melbourne’s homeless people.

Werribee Funerals is running a food appeal during July and August to collect non-perishable groceries that will be donated to the Sacred Heart Mission, St Kilda.

Items urgently needed include tinned tuna, salmon and corn, jars of pasta sauce, pasta, rice, flour, sugar, breakfast cereal, Vegemite, peanut butter, jam, Nutella, honey, tea bags, biscuits and Milo.

Dishwashing liquid, washing-up gloves, laundry detergent and mugs are also needed.

Donations can be le at 11 Greaves Street, Werribee, during business hours.

Like many teenagers, Ocean Greig dreams of becoming a famous actor.

Ms Greig is hoping Ocean will be able to

Harlie is a quiet and friendly boy, who looks forward to having an indoor lifestyle in his new home.

He has a short, low-maintenance coat that will stay soft and shiny with regular brushing.

Because he is a bouncy, excitable pup, Ramsey is a bit too exuberant for kids or elderly people. He needs to be the only dog in his new home.

Ramsey has been desexed and with lots of love and exercise, he will be the perfect companion.

Old pets and the vet!

All pets face changes in their bodies as they get older, some visible externally, others internal changes that aren’t visible to their owner. The good news is that with regular health checks you and your vet can improve your older dog or cat’s quality of life well into the future. Particular attention needs to be paid to the heart, teeth and joints as pets age. This can be done by a thorough check-up by a vet at least once or twice a year. Owners should also have their vet check any lumps or growths on their cats and dogs as soon as they are noticed. Weight loss and

altered appetite or thirst can be a sign of serious disease in an older pet and should be investigated sooner rather than later. Regular blood and urine tests can monitor your pet’s liver and kidney functions and detect medical issues such as diabetes as early as possible. Excellent medical treatments are now available for problems such as arthritis and can give pets a new lease on life. Age is certainly not a barrier to good veterinary care. Werribee senior coach John Lamont will also be interviewed just minutes before the first bounce. What a great sporting experience. This game is part of Bendigo Bank’s Community Day. We’ll welcome our Auskickers for their half-time games and there will also be an AFL Fun Zone, face-painting, a jumping castle and plenty of giveaway from both the Werribee Football Club and AFL affiliate North Melbourne. The Kangaroos and Tigers mascots will be around the ground. Our match-day sponsors are Bendigo Bank and West Suburban Taxis. Werribee Football Club is celebrating its 50th year in the VFL competition, and it’s a rich history. In 1992 the club won the first and, as it turned out, the only Premier’s Cup under coach Leon Harris. The cup was presented by then-Premier Joan Kirner. The honour was great, but ask anyone at the club and the $32,000 prizemoney was better.

The inaugural Hall of Fame dinner will celebrate the events and the people of the club’s first 50 years. Don’t miss this night of nights, the biggest night in the club’s history. The first Hall of Fame inductees and three more Legends will be announced. It doesn’t get any bigger than this.

WERRIBEE 7 College Road, 3030

Hocking Stuart: 9731 7022 Price: $440,000 – $460,000

A true gem, Carter Cottage’s new owners will have a piece of history. The three-bedroom property is on the south side of Werribee and only a short stroll to Watton Street, with Werribee train station and Corpus Christi, Mackillop College and Werribee Secondary College nearby. Renovated and beautifully presented, the impressive residence has two separate living areas and a modern kitchen updated a year ago with new stone benchtops, stainless-steel appliances, exposed brick splashbacks and downlights. The main bedroom has a renovated en suite. Other bedrooms share a newly renovated bathroom. Further features include Tasmanian oak floorboards, new timber window, block-out and roman blinds plantation shutters, European laundry with bifold doors, wood fire heater, gas wall heater, air-conditioner, high ceilings and double garage. The outdoor entertainment area with timber deck leads out to a small lawn for kids’ play.

Spacious and stylish, this lovely north-facing residence has a lively charm and features an open-plan design, with three separate living areas and four bedrooms. There are lounge and rumpus rooms and bright meals-family zone, each with feature walls and floorboards. The bright kitchen has stainless-steel appliances, including dishwasher, breakfast bar and ample cupboard and bench space.

The clever floor plan includes four bedrooms, with an en suite to the main bedroom, as well as sparkling main bathroom. In the backyard, there is an extensive timber entertainment deck surrounded by tropical-inspired gardens and a water feature. A double garage, alarm, ducted heating, air-conditioner, and an above-ground pool are further perks. It’s close to St James The Apostle and Woodville primary schools, Werribee Plaza, Werribee Mercy Hospital, Victoria University and Hoppers Crossing train station.

In Brimbank Gardens estate, within a stone’s throw of Derrimut Primary School and community centre and around the corner from a children’s park, this young house not only has a family-friendly location but also slightly cracks the mould when it comes to oor plan.

In this case, the main bedroom is zoned well away from living areas, and the adult entertainment space (lounge-dining room) lies centrally across the width of the house. The interior colour palette is a combo of grey, charcoal, white and latte and all areas are spacious. The wide, tiled entry hall has garage access, and an open study to the left. A

carpeted hall then ducks left to double doors to the extra-large main bedroom featuring retreat space, a large walk-in wardrobe and big en suite.

A cavity wall provides glimpses of the aforementioned lounge-dining zone, then a wide entry ushers in the huge, tiled living hub of kitchen and family-meals area.

The kitchen has a servery bench with outfacing opaque-glass-fronted storage cupboards, a pantry, dishwasher, underbench oven and 900mm gas cooktop.

A blingy chandelier centres the meals space.

A carpeted hall from the family room leads to two bedrooms with built-in robes,

the main bathroom decked out in latte and white, and a laundry with closet and immediate access to the utility area.

An integrated outdoor entertainment area with grey concrete underfoot is the spot for weekend brunch, while the compact backyard is landscaped and has a vegie patch and thriving lemon tree.

The property has ducted heating, split-system, alarm, solar hot water service and a double garage with remote-control. It’s within a short drive of ever-growing Derrimut Village shopping centre and, beyond that, the Western Highway.

NEW HOMES AND LAND – Forsyth Park Truganina

Living in the same housing estate as friends and family may be a dream but it has come true for four groups of people at Forsyth Park in Truganina.

All four groups have each recently bought a home site in the community – within weeks of each other.

Future residents Narinderjeet Kaur and husband Ramandeep Singh bought land in March and when their friends found out about it and researched the community they all jumped on the bandwagon.

Forsyth Park attracted the friends because of its one-hectare park and the future café, medical and childcare centres.

Beant Kaur and her husband are joining Narinderjeet and Ramandeep as future residents of the community and is looking forward to living close to her loved ones.

“When our friends purchased their block at Forsyth Park we decided to take a look. As soon as we saw it, we knew it was the perfect location to build our dream home,” Beant said.

“With a one-year-old child, we think Forsyth Park is the perfect place to call home. We will be able to walk to the park, and the childcare centre is an absolute bonus.”

Jaspreet and her husband also bought a block of land at Forsyth Park, joining their friends, with the larger blocks another drawcard for them.

Forsyth Park has teamed up with Nostra Homes to deliver house and land packages named “Otto” – from $299,000

Cyclists can’t escape calls now

Bicycle

are keeping bike riders connected, writes Rod Easdown

Bret is a mate of mine who had his car written o by a bicycle. It was coming down a long hill and its rider didn’t know rim brakes don’t work in the wet. e bike rocketed through a stop sign and onto the intersection at full tilt and hit Bret’s little Renault at the front passenger’s door, ipping its rider over to land on his back on the car’s roof.

It cushioned his fall nicely and landed him upright and on his feet on the other side of the car. He wasn’t even scratched.

Meanwhile the Renault had a redesigned fender and door, and the roof was caved in. It was eight years old and the insurance company gured it wasn’t worth saving.

Of course, Bret emerged as the bad guy of the encounter for no other reason than that he was in a car.

Needless to say he has a view on cyclists. I’ve explained to him that cyclists always win the PR warbecausetheywindupmaimedandbleeding while pursuing their innocent, healthy lifestyles while sel sh, crazed motorists who can’t be delayed a single second maliciously run them down and disappear over the horizon laughing endishly. Motorists are all the same.

Now I have to tell him there are bicycle computers that make and receive rider’s telephone calls and texts, meaning the cyclists’ moral high ground will extend even further onto the road space as riders do all that neat, diverting phone stu while riding.

Magellan has announced a so ware update for its Cyclo 500 computers providing on-screen

call and text message alerts from smartphones, and wireless control of the music stored on them.

“We are always looking for new ways to improve the cycling life of Australians and these cool one-of-kind features do just that,” saidParisBasson, abrandmanageratMagellan.

e phone features work with Apples and AndroidsviaBluetooth4.0. eyalertthecyclist to incoming calls and display text messages on the screen mounted on the handlebars. ere is caller-ID and calls can be routed through a Bluetooth headset.

Cyclists can also play, stop and pause music from their smartphones and receive turn-by-turn instructions from the phone’s navigation so ware.

It’sencouragingtonotetheMagellanso ware also includes an emergency feature that sends a text message to cyclists’ nominated contacts advising of their exact location, providing an address and latitude and longitude (always handy).

is means that, when cyclists encounter di culties as a result of interacting with the phone rather than their fellow road users, someone can come by and rescue them. But this works only with Androids; Apple users must sort through about four billion apps to nd something similar.

e new features are available as a free so ware update for existing owners of Cyclo 500 computers, while new Cyclos carrying the so ware are available from $379 to $479. (Supplied)

Hoppers snares vital win

Hoppers Crossing has produced one of its most complete performances of the Western Region Football League division 1 season to dispose of Sunshine Kangaroos on their home track at Kinder Smith Reserve on Saturday.

e Warriors had a 15-minute lapse in the third term, but it was plain sailing therea er en route to a comfortable 52-point win.

e fi h-placed Warriors opened up a two-game and percentage gap over the sides sitting outside the top five.

“[Sunshine] is a dangerous side so we’re really happy to come away with the win, especially at their home ground where they’re really hard to beat,” Warriors coach Steve Kretiuk said.

“We sort of had a lapse in concentration [in the third term] but we pretty much controlled the game from the outset.

“It was an eight-point game for us because they were sitting behind us and if they’d won they could’ve gone on top of us.”

e Warriors ran rampant in the first

half, booting seven goals to one and taking a 41-point lead into half-time.

e Roos went on a run of their own to trim the margin to 30 at the last change, but the Warriors restored order with five goals to one in the fourth.

Youngster Nick Jones impressed in the midfield for the Warriors and showed why some VFL clubs will be keeping close tabs on his progress.

A smart player with neat skills, Jones has the potential to take a step up in class if he’s willing to put the work in.

“He did a pre-season at Werribee, but probably lacked a bit of fitness so it’s something we need to work on because he’s certainly capable with his skills and game sense to play at a higher level,” Kretiuk said.

“He was outstanding today. He worked really hard around the ground and his cleanliness around the footy was really good.

“He really stood out today in the trying conditions.”

e Warriors got good shi s out of their tall

timber in first choice ruckman Wayde Skipper and three-goal ruckman-forward Trent Rutherford.

Skipper has been one of the recruits of the year in the WRFL, not only because of his ruckwork but his ability to follow up at ground level.

“If you want to get anyone into your side out of the whole WRFL, you want to get ‘Skip’,” Kretiuk said.

“His ruckwork, firstly, is second to none, but a er he does his ruckwork, he plays as another midfielder.

“He’s got an enormous tank and can out-run pretty much every ruckman in the competition with his workrate.

“He’s a real key to us.”

Ryan Kitchen snared three goals for the Warriors, while there were two each for Jones, Kyle Traynor and Matthew Poland.

e Warriors can further consolidate their top-five spot when they host a struggling Port Melbourne Colts at Hogans Road on Saturday.

Undermanned Jets find the going tough

A shorthanded Western Jets slumped to their second defeat in three TAC Cup matches as the player drain from representative demands took its toll.

e Jets struggled to cover the absence of seven walk-up starters in an 18-point loss to the North Ballarat Rebels at Eureka Stadium on Sunday.

Jets coach Torin Baker was proud to have six players running around for Vic Metro and one for the Northern Territory in the under-18 national championships last week. But it did his line-up no favours for a crucial game in which they coughed up third spot on the ladder to their opponents.

“We were really pleased with the fact we’ve had good representation [at the national championships] and the players have actually played really well,” Baker said.

‘‘ ere’s another week to go in the national championships so we won’t have the majority of them next week either.’’

e spirited Jets were up by three points at half time. ey were superbly led by winger Brayden Monk, who continued his rich vein of form to be named “best” for the visitors.

“His performances over the past nine or so weeks have been outstanding,” Baker said.

“He was a great competitor and won a lot of the ball.”

Scoring was already at a premium with blustery conditions in the first half, so a fast start was imperative before the rain set in midway through the third quarter.

e Rebels kicked the only two goals of the third term and flexed their defensive muscle, keeping the Jets goalless for the rest of the match. Baker was pleased with the fight shown by his team, minus so many of its leaders.

“Both sides cracked in really hard and it was a good game of footy, but they just made the most of their opportunities in the end.”

Ruckman Mark Orr, onballer Mitch Palma, defender Braden Ferrari and captain Liam McMahon were the standouts for the Jets.

Ryley Stuhldreier was the lone multiple goalkickerwithtwooftheJets’paltryfivegoals.

With so many of his top-liners unavailable, Baker got the chance to blood Daniel Venables, a player out of the talented crop of under-16s at his disposal.

“With a lot of the older boys out, it’s good that we’ve been able to give opportunities to most of the players on our list.”

e Jets face Calder Cannons at Burbank Oval, Williamstown, at 12.30pm on Saturday.

Lance Jenkinson

Ԃ Someone said to me the other day, “Thank God the Socceroos keep losing, because if they ever start winning, our game is in big trouble”. So how healthy is Aussie Rules? At AFL level we have clubs losing millions of dollars a year being subsidised by the competition. The next level down (VFL) is a hotch-potch of AFL reserves, stand-alone VFL clubs and fully and partially aligned VFL/AFL clubs. Last week, Bendigo advised the competition it was handing back its licence at the end of two winless years. At grassroots level, we have some clubs paying ridiculous amounts to players and others telling players they can’t pay them at all. We have former AFL stars hawking themselves around for cameo appearances in the ’burbs and the bush for anything from $5000 upwards. We’re told participation rates are growing every year. I find this hard to take as I think the influx of females into the game and some other factors have masked a decline in the top age groups. Just look at the WRFL under-18 competition. Glenorden won the under-18 B flag last year but couldn’t field a team this year. In fact, more than half the clubs in the two senior divisions don’t field an under-18 side. That’s not a healthy sign. The standard of the game at suburban level has probably never been better at the top end, but it does fall away. I can see some major issues on the horizon and I hope we don’t see another group of clubs squeezed out of existence. One club that no longer exists on the playing field is the Footscray and Yarraville Socials who survived from 1943-1975 – a short but very rich history. A number of the club’s players went onto play at the highest level, including Ted Whitten junior, Ian Bryant, Peter Welsh and Barry Bennett. Their annual reunions have gone from strength to strength. This year it’s at the Pound Cafe at Whitten Oval at noon on Friday, July 25. For more information, contact Barry Bennett on 0400848 923 or thom_ben@ optusnet.com.au.

Ԃ There will be a cricket theme at the pre-game luncheon at Werribee Football Club before the match against North Ballarat this week when former Australian captain Ricky Ponting is guest speaker. Ponting, an avid North Melbourne fan, will be on stage with senior coach Brad Scott. Tickets are available through Janelle at the club on 9741 9862 or functions@werribeefc. com.au.

BULLDOGS IN FOCUS

In a regular series, Western Bulldogs CEO Simon Garlick and player Tory Dickson write exclusively for Star Weekly

Footy is everyone’s game

It’s been a big weekend of footy for the Bulldogs, with double the red, white and blue on display at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

More importantly, there was double the pride, owing to the second elite AFL women’s match between the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne.

As a club, we are thrilled to be a part of the momentum that’s gathering in women’s footy, both here in the west and across the county.

e club has made a commitment to women’s footy because it makes sense. As a father of an up-and-coming female footballer myself, I know first-hand that girls want to play our great game.

What we need to do as an industry and community is make sure these girls get the opportunity to play throughout their lives.

at’s why we not only wholeheartedly support the annual fixture but also provide practical support for the sport that will make a difference to growing girls’ participation at grassroots and elite levels.

At the community level, the Bulldogs have kicked off the first all–girls Auskick centre in Maribyrnong, so girls can have fun in a boy-free zone.

Further up the elite pathway, we have partnered with the Victorian Women’s Football League (VWFL) by hosting women state representative matches at Victoria University Whitten Oval.

We also house the VWFL development academy, which gives the state’s top talent access to one of the best elite playing surfaces in the country.

We want to be a club that supports all our community.

Fundamental to that is supporting girls, like my daughter, so they can live out their dream of playing at the top level, if good enough.

And while our women’s team didn’t snag the result they wanted at the weekend, as a club we very much look forward to both our men’s and women’s teams having dual wins on the big stage.

Fatherhood and football

All my life, all I ever wanted to be was a professional footballer. From kicks with my dad at the park, to now playing at Etihad Stadium and the MCG, that passion I felt when picking up my first football hasn’t changed.

Life has certainly thrown me a few curve balls, but nothing has proven more challenging or rewarding than being a dad.

I’d be lying if I said it was easy, juggling the life of a professional athlete and being a single dad to my son. But to tell you the truth, I wouldn’t change a thing.

I admit that sometimes life as a professional footballer is tough, whether it’s not getting 100 per cent out of myself and how frustrating that can be or receiving direct feedback from my coaches or even the criticism from media.

But a er a hard day on the pitch or feeling disappointed in a performance, nothing gets me up more than hearing: “Hey, dad, how was your day?” when I pick my son up from school.

My pathway to the Western Bulldogs is not the one commonly taken. Just two years prior to being dra ed, I was playing suburban football. Becoming a professional athlete, although a boyhood dream, was the furthest thing from my mind.

If it wasn’t for then-Bendigo Bombers coach and current Western Bulldogs forward coach Shannon Grant, I may not have even been playing footy.

He convinced me to have one more crack and I’m glad I did. I owe everything to Shannon, along with Brendan McCartney for taking the chance on a 24-year-old forward from Berwick.

It’s been really exciting playing against the best footballers in the nation and I feel extremely fortunate to be where I am, playing for the mighty red, white and blue.

Warriors’ hopes alive

Westbourne Grammarians breathed life into their Victorian Amateur Football Association division 4 campaign with a 30-point win over ManninghamCobrasatWestbourneGrammar School on Saturday.

e Warriors’ season was at the crossroads at the 10-minute mark of the last quarter and they le nothing in reserve, knowing a loss would drop them out of the nals chase.

A ve-goals-to-one last quarter sealed the Warriors’ fourth win of the season and moves them to within two games of the top four.

“We need their spot so it was an eight-point game,” Warriors assistant coach Darren Saunders said.

“It keeps us within two games of them and we’ve got a pretty good run home. We need to make every post a winner now.”

e game was evenly poised until midway through the nal term. at’s when best-on-ground Adam Imber and fellow onballer Tim Rogers went to work for the Warriors, winning the hard ball and giving their running brigade enough possession to do some damage.

With two wins over the Cobras this season, the Warriors know their best is good enough, but they must start producing it on a more consistentbasis.“Weknowwe’vegotalongway to go, but today’s form and the last couple of weeks we’ve shown we can play because we’ve played three top teams and pushed them all at certain times,” Saunders said.

Point Cook came to a standstill in the last quarter of a 36-point loss to Box Hill North at Elgar Park. e Bulldogs trailed by six points at three-quarter-time, but conceded six goals to one in the nal term as their woeful inaccuracy from earlier in the day came back to bite them. Playing

Soccer Werribee City was hammered 3-0 by Hume City at Broadmeadows Valley Park in the National Premier League on Sunday. Abel Fesseha, once on the books at Hoppers Crossing, red in two goals for Hume in its resounding win. The Bees are 10th on the table ahead of Sunday’s home clash with the Melbourne Knights at Galvin Park at 3pm. Hoppers Crossing’s division 4 clash with Altona North was postponed after the referee deemed the Duane Reserve surface un t for action.

Hockey Werribee has plenty of ground to make up if it is to reach the Hockey Victoria men’s league 1 nals. The Tigers slipped further off the pace after a 4-1 mauling from Yarra Valley away on Saturday. It was better news in women’s league 2, with Werribee blanking RMIT 5-0 on their short trip to McIvor Reserve. Cath Gladman scored two goals to lead her team. She has eight for the season.

Werribee Bears coughed up a 16-point lead to lose 18-16 to the ladder-leading Sunbury Tigers at Haines Drive Reserve on Saturday. The Bears are still on track to play nals, sitting third on the ladder, but coach Aaron Tiananga must have pondered what might have been had his side managed to pull off the upset. Tiananga’s men are sure to be revved up for their away clash with the Doveton Steelers on Saturday as they strive to get back to their winning ways.

Bolton a bolter as ‘lucky’ Tigers hang on

e Werribee Tigers were breathing a sigh of relief a er finishing 13 points clear of Coburg Lions in a low-scoring VFL clash at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday.

Tigers coach John Lamont admitted his side was“probablylucky”tohavebankedafour-goal lead at half-time because it was second to the ball for much of the second half and in danger of being overrun.

“I was really pleased with our first half where we created a nice lead,” he said. “ ey won the second half and we were probably lucky we’d created the lead we had. I was just relieved to get the four points, to be honest.”

Jye Bolton was best on ground as the Tigers edged the Lions, 8.12 (60) to 6.11 (47).

e wet and windy conditions dictated a stop-start game, with contested ball the key.

e Tigers dominated this area in the first half, getting first use of the ball and using it to menacing effect.

“We had the initiative around the stoppages,” Lamont said.

“We probably played a bit smarter, knowing when to handball and when to kick in the conditions.”

e pendulum swung in favour of the Lions in the second half when coach Peter German changed his line-up and opted for more one-on-one contests.

e visitors’ fightback was aided by the Tigers’ inaccurate kicking: a return of just 2.5 for the third quarter. “If we kick 5.2 the game is snuffed out, but at the 20-minute mark [of the fourth quarter] it was well and truly alive,” Lamont said.

But the Tigers managed to hold on for their second win in as many weeks to keep in touch with the top four.

A major component was Bolton, who just about covered every blade of grass for theTigers. eonballercappedabest-on-ground display with two of his side’s eight goals.

“He was clearly our best player through the middle,” Lamont said.

“He had rebounds 50s, inside 50s, won

contested ball and got a bit of outside ball.”

Mason Wood pressed his claims for selection at the Tigers’ AFL affiliate North Melbourne with another solid performance. Wood was used in a variety of roles from wing to forward and even came to the aid of the defence at times.

Tim McGenniss, Kieran Harper and Tom Gribble did a power of work at the coalface, while Dylan Jones proved an able replacement for the injured Daniel Currie.

e Tigers will look to make it three in a row when North Ballarat visits Watton Street for a 1pm start on Saturday.

“It’s a bit of a local derby because of the North Melbourne connection,” Lamont said. “Having worked at North the past few years, there’s a bit of banter that starts early in the week and towards the last part of the week we tended to split them up at training.

“It’s got a different feel about it and, historically, they’ve been good games.”

Dante chases NBA peak

Entering the NBA at age 18, one of the biggest challenges for former Werribee Devils junior Dante Exum will be developing from a boy into a man.

His selection last week by the Utah Jazz with pick five at the 2014 NBA Dra created a national stir.

e supremely talented combo guard will aim to form a lethal backcourt combination with Trey Burke, who the Jazz dra ed in the top 10 last season.

Utah is a young up-and-coming team, viewed as a solid landing spot for a raw Exum to grow into a man’s body.

e athletic 18-year-old from Seabrook already stands at six-foot-six and is viewed as an elite playmaker with great defensive reach. Exum was dubbed the ‘‘international man of mystery’’ by the US press a er opting not to go through the college basketball system, trailing a different path to fellow Australians in the big league, including former No.1 pick Andrew Bogut, NBA champion Patty Mills and the rising Aron Baynes and Matthew Dellavedova.

A er stints in the junior ranks with the Werribee Devils and Keilor under, Exum went on to do an apprenticeship at the Australian Institute of Sport and is now keen to shed the mystery tag.

“I’m just a kid from Melbourne, Australia, and I always represent my country,” Exum told ESPN a er hearing his name read out by NBA commissioner Adam Silver.

“I guess now I just got dra ed I’m not a mystery any more.”

Exum is the son of former NBL star Cecil Exum.

Cecil was part of a Michael Jordan-led North Carolina team that went on to win the 1982 college national championship.

Two years later, Cecil was dra ed by the Denver Nuggets but would eventually find his wayDownUnderandhaveanoteworthycareer in the NBL with the North Melbourne Giants, Melbourne Tigers and Geelong Supercats.

While Cecil launched his career in college, he instructed his son take a different route.

“He [Dante] said he always wanted to be one year [in college basketball] and then done, and I said maybe you should strike while the iron is hot,” Cecil told the host dra broadcaster.

“We just wanted to make sure he focused and worked hard towards his goal.” at ‘iron’ was scorching hot a er Exum represented Australia at last year’s FIBA U19 world championships.

Exum averaged 18.2 points a game and stood out against the best players in the world in his age group to be named in the All-World First Team.

An outstanding showing against Spain – including 33 points, three three-pointers and 12-from-13 from the free-throw line –confirmed in the minds of many scouts that Exum has a special future in the game.

He’s thrilled to have landed at the Jazz and will relish the chance to play alongside Burke in one of the NBA’s most young but exciting backcourt tandems. Exum says it reminds him of the set-up within the Australian Boomers squad, which he will be a part of at future Olympic Games. “You look at our Australian

team and we’ve got Patty Mills and Matthew Dellavedova and I’m looking forward to playing with another guard,” Exum said.

e due diligence undertaken by NBA scouts suggests Exum exudes maturity beyond his young years and will have no problem keeping his feet on the ground. But even Exum acknowledgeshehasalottolearnandiswilling to do whatever it takes to get up to speed.

“It will be a good experience for me and I’m looking to go into the system and learn.”

Yet another Werribee success story with Ben Brown breaking into the Kangaroos side, tell us your thoughts on Ben?

Firstly you have to give him massive credit for getting out of his comfort zone and moving over to Victoria to have a crack at VFL football.

He is still raw,he had an injury over the preseason which was unfortunate as he missed so much training.

He has slowly built up his game over the past 4 weeks, and an unfortunate injury to Rob Tarrant gave Ben an early opportunity .He has good hands and is a solid contested mark, and he is an accurate shot at goal couple that with his ability to pinch-hit in the ruck he has the basis of a solid game for AFL level.

He still has much to learn, particularly on the defensive side of the game, but is great to see him make his debut with our alignedAFL partner.

We have had some unusual fixturing with the Development side playing on different days, against different teams, and even playing the same team two weeks in a row. What do you see as the future of that competition and its role in footy?

There is a definite role there for the Development League for the players who are not quite ready for VFL football. Players who are still maturing, or transitioning out of TAC Cup or looking to extend themselves out of local club level football, for them to be playing at that level is critical. They need to be playing VFL style football, and whilst the speed of the game isn’t as high at Development level, they are forming the habits that will stand them in good stead.

A great example is the 23rd player, they come up to the VFL seniors to experience that tempo of play, they can then drop back to the VFL Development squad and continue to improve their game under the same coaching group.

Ben Brown played in the Werribee Development team last year, then came back into the seniors and then got drafted. The Development League has a role to play.

We have Ricky Ponting coming to the lunch on Saturday. He is one of the greats of Australian sport. It will be a buzz having him stick his head into the rooms?

It will as long as the playing group keep their focus.

“If it takes a battery or you need portable power, we will be able to help you find a solution to get you up and going,” Stubbs says.

Customers receive a $15 trade-in when purchasing a Yuasa, Century or Varta car, deep cycle or marine battery.

Free battery testing, free fitting of car batteries and recycling of batteries are available.

XK not quite ready for our roads

Introduced in September, 1960 and looking clean and sleek, the XK Falcon was an instant hit with buyers looking for something with more up to date styling or a little different from the staid Holden FB, its main competitor.

Brochures of the day touted the Falcon as “Australian – with a world of difference”. In reality, the first-model Falcon was a right-hand clone of the US model.

is very fact turned out to be a big problem for Ford Australia because the Falcon was to prove rather fragile when subjected to Australian roads of the time, especially when they were promoted with the catchcry “designed for Australian conditions”.

ough the new model was popular with Australian buyers, it was to be five years before Ford Australia could begin to show a profit. Almostaustereinappearance, theFalconXK carried a minimum of exterior decoration and sold on release for $2274 for the basic model. If the optional automatic transmission was fitted, the cost rose to $2512.

A deluxe model which differed only from the basic model in trim and decoration was available at $2636. Because of the austere appearance, the accessory manufacturers had a field day producing chrome wheel trims, rear wheel spats, sun visors, weather shields, a rear window venetian blind and a chromeplated bonnet ornament. A year or so a er introduction of the sedan, a station wagon and then a utility were added to the range.

In comparison with the Holden, the Falcon’s engine was somewhat more powerful

and automatic transmission was offered as an option. e base-model engine was the 6-cylinder 144 cubic inch model (2.36 litres) and there was an optional 170 cubic inch (2.78 litres) model. e 144 engine-powered Falcon had a top speed of 135 km/h, accelerating from 0 to 100km/h in 17 seconds.

Hydraulic 229mm drum brakes were fitted and the low-geared recirculating ball steering required five turns from lock to lock for a turning circle of 11.6 metres.

Suspension was basic and comprised independent coil springs with hydraulic double-acting shock absorbers and stabiliser

bar in the front, while the rear had a live axle with semi-elliptic springs and double acting shock absorbers. As with the competition, dash instrumentation was rather sparse with a speedometer and odometer, fuel gauge, temperature gauge, and oil and generator warning lights.
