Ԃ $95 million health boost Ԃ 192 new beds

New hospital option

A new 112-bed private hospital is to be built in Werribee at a cost of $75 million.

St Vincent’s Health Australia announced on Tuesdayitsplanstoopenaprivatefacilityopposite Werribee Mercy Hospital by 2016.

In 2012, it was revealed the organisation had bought four hectares of land on Hoppers Lane where a new hospital would be built as part of the East Werribee Employment Precinct.

St Vincent’s Private Melbourne chief executive Ian Grisold said the hospital would treat more than 16,000 patients a year and employ 270 people.

e three-storey hospital will include for orthopaedic, obstetrics, cardiology, ear nose and throat, oncology, gynaecology, general surgery and rehabilitation services.

Mr Grisold said the hospital would also help with Wyndham’s baby boom.

“Today, one out of every two mothers in the Wyndham area who gives birth needs to go outside the local community for their care,” he said.

“Many currently travel to St Vincent’s Private in Fitzroy … soon they’ll have the St Vincent’s Private choice in their own backyard.”

A $20 million 80-bed aged-care centre will also be built on the site. It will cater for residents with dementia and provide respite care for people who are financially disadvantaged.

Victorian Health Minister David Davis said the hospital was a major addition to the growing health precinct on Hoppers Lane.

“Development of a new St Vincent’s private hospital and aged-care facility represents a $95 million investment in Werribee and the outer west’s healthcare and follows the completion of a $28 million redevelopment in February this year at the publicly funded Mercy Hospital,” Mr Davis said.

“ e hospital will include several operating theatres, a day procedure unit and a cardiac catheter laboratory to provide additional health services to the people of Wyndham.”

Planning Minister Matthew Guy told Star Weekly the construction of a privately funded hospital in East Werribee showed there was significant developer interest in the area.

e new hospital will be built next to the Wyndham Private Medical Centre and across the road from the 200-bed Werribee Mercy Hospital.

It’s expected construction will begin in the next six to eight months.

Point Cook remains hot property

Point Cook is the biggest real estate hot spot in Melbourne’s west, with new figures revealing more houses are being sold in the area than in any other western suburb.

Data from the Valuer-General’s office shows that 596 houses were sold in Point Cook last year, followed by Hoppers Crossing (513 sales), Werribee (504), Tarneit (473) and Caroline Springs (413). Victoria’s highest-selling suburb was Berwick, where 791 houses were sold.

Fashion dreams take shape

A Werribee model and fashion designer is spreading the message that big can be beautiful.

Amber Gwynn has launched her own fashion label catering for women who are considered plus-sized.

Ms Gwynn, 30, says she was inspired to create her own line of clothes a er working as a model and seeing the limited range available to larger women.

“A er working in the fashion industry I identified there was a gap in quality boutique wear for women who wear larger sizes,” she says.

“I guess I wanted to advocate that all women are real, no matter what their size or shape.”

MsGwynnsaysthat, technically, anything above a size 12 is considered plus-sized in Australia, but she plans to provide clothes up to size 30.

“My mum’s a larger lady and she’s always inspired me with her style.

“Up to size 12 you can get really nice boutique wear, but anything beyond that it starts to get challenging.

“I just wanted to promote a positive body image for young girls and show that there is such a thing as healthy curves. It’s OK to have hips and thighs.”

Reflecting the message that Ms Gwynn is trying to convey, her fledgling label is named Nyata, which means ‘‘real’’ in Indonesian.

Ms Gwynn says her first line of clothing consists of only black and white designs, but she plans to branch out once her label grows in popularity.

LJ Hooker Point Cook director Paul Caine saidhewasn’tsurprisedbytheresults, believing the suburb’s selling point was its proximity to the city and affordable house prices.

e median house price for Point Cook in December 2013 was $456,500.

“Point Cook has a family feel to the area and it’s only 20 kilometres to the city,” Mr Caine said.

“It has the family-orientated facilities that people are looking for, such as parks and good schools.”

Mr Caine said Wyndham’s congestion problems did not appear to be putting people off. He said the average Point Cook buyer was a family looking to buy their first or second home, however there were still some investors buying in the area.

Point Cook Action Group president Tony Hooper said while the suburb’s popularity was good for residents’ bids to get better infrastructure and facilities, he was worried the high number of recent sales meant that families may be leaving the area.

He said there was a shortage of white collar jobs and high schools offering years 10-12.

“If people are moving out to provide a home for kids when they get into high school, then that’s not good,” he said.

Mr Hooper, who has lived in the area for six years, is calling on the state government and the council to provide more jobs to encourage professionals to remain in the area.

“In 10 years, I see Point Cook being the go-to area of the western suburbs, if it is nurtured properly.”

Harder line on unpaid fines

Wyndham residents could face having their cars clamped or registration suspended over unpaid litter, parking or animalregistrationfinesa erthecouncil announced changes to the way it will collect unpaid fines.

From July 1, residents who fail to pay fines issued by the council under state government laws for litter, town planning, environmental health, parking and animal registrations, will have to face the infringements court.

Currently, those types of offences are dealt with in a magistrates court.

e change means unpaid fines will be pursued by the Sheriff’s Office once the infringements court has made a decision.

e Sheriff’s Office will be able to use its full range of powers to recoup the fine, including suspending car registrations and drivers’ licences, clamping wheels and, in some cases, seizing property.

Council chief executive Kerry ompson said Wyndham was following other municipalities which had changed the way they collected and processed state government fines. In the past year, the council has taken 1719 cases of unpaid fines to the magistrates court at a cost of more than $86,000.

Mayor Bob Fairclough said the new approach would save time and money. “It will result in reduced costs for the council and a reduced workload for the magistrates court,” he said. “But it won’t remove the right of any individual to appear before a magistrate if they wish. e council will no longer require the services of debt collection agencies to pursue unpaid fines.”

Fines issued under council laws will still be processed by the magistrates court.

Life skills served up

Young people spending time at Werribee’s Youth Garage will be able to learn life skills such as food preparation and healthy cooking from next term, a er a kitchen was installed at the centre.

Students from Werribee Secondary College’s hands-on learning program and Bunnings staff visited the Market Road youth hub last Wednesday to install the kitchen.

Youth Garage co-ordinator Sandra Inserra said the kitchen would provide young people with a chance to learn new skills and “take somethingpositiveaway”fromtheirtimeatthe garage. “We will use the kitchen to teach them about first aid, food handling and training about healthy eating,” she said.

“We want to raise the positive profile of young people in Wyndham and show local people they can contribute.”

Ms Inserra said that by giving up their time to install the kitchen, Werribee Secondary College students had shown that young people wanted to be a part of the community.

“Quite o en we hear a lot of negative stories ofyoungpeopleinourcommunity.Someofthe kids helping out didn’t want to stop for lunch.

ey knew they were part of something bigger than them that would help other people.”

Anglicare has been running e Garage in Werribee for 17 years, offering young people who are disengaged from school, the community or their families, a place to take part in activities and get support and advice from local services.

Ms Inserra said the hub provided young people with a safe space to be themselves.

School bonus stays, for now

ousands of Wyndham families are likely to have extra cash in their pockets next month with the federal government running out of time to pass legislation to scrap its schoolkids bonus.

e bonus, paid to parents in January and July each year, provides eligible families with $410 a year for primary school children and $820 for secondary school children.

As reported by Star Weekly, the government is trying to scrap the bonus, saying it can’t afford the payments as they were funded by the underperforming mining tax, which it hopes

to repeal. But it’s unlikely the government will be able to get the necessary legislation through Parliament before June 30.

Iramoo Primary School principal Moira Findlay said the July instalment of the bonus could enable many children to attend school camps later in the year.

Ms Findlay said every Wyndham school had been asked to nominate 10 pupils from grade 5 or 6 to attend a 10-day Education Department camp at Somers in October. e camp costs $210.

She said her school had nominated pupils from families that could not afford holidays to give the children a break.

‘‘ The bonus will be the

difference between some parents saying yes to their children going

’’ - Moira Findlay

“ e bonus will be the difference between some parents saying yes to their children going to Somers,” she said.

“It’s a special experience. Not many children get to go to the camp.”

Ms Findlay said for other parents, the bonus would help them pay off items, excursions and

camps they would otherwise struggle to afford.

Lalor Labor MP Joanne Ryan said while families would welcome the July payments, it was “outrageous” that it might be their last instalment of the bonus.

She said the bonus helped about 18,000 familiesinLalorwiththebasiccostsofsending their children to school.

“One additional payment of the schoolkids bonus will be no compensation for Tony Abbott’s savage cuts to families in this year’s budget,’’ Ms Ryan said.

‘‘Tony Abbott’s cruel budget will put more pressure on the budgets of thousands of Lalor families.”

Plans for piazza cafe scrapped

Wyndham council has abandoned plans for a cafe at the Wedge Street Piazza as part of the next stage of the Werribee CBD revitalisation project.

As late as January last year, the council was spruiking the planned addition of a cafe, with the project expected to be completed by last December. But council chief executive Kerry ompson confirmed the ‘open counter’ cafe/kiosk would not go ahead.

She said alternatives were being considered following limited business interest and fears the structure would detract from the visual attractiveness of the piazza.

‘‘ Wyndham City is now planning other works ’’

“Wyndham City is now planning other works, with the aim of increasing activity in the piazza and use by different community groups,’’ she said.

Ms ompson said while a kiosk would not be built, the piazza had proved to be a popular development.

“Space in the piazza is able to be booked by the community for their use.

‘‘Community markets and events, tai chi, musical performances and free business-run community events have all been held in the piazza. A wedding was even recently held there. More activities of this type are being encouraged.”

e piazza opened in February 2011 and a connecting bridge that crosses the Werribee River was finished soon a er.

He’s a living football legend who just happens to call Point Cook home.

Sid’s the top bulldog

And while he may not get a he y pay cheque like some of the other big names in AFL, this stalwart of the game gets more attention than most.

Sid is the official mascot of the Western Bulldogs Football Club and attends all home games, making up part of the guard of honour for players and mixing with fans.

His owners, Jerome and Emma Murnane, of Murlane Kennels in Point Cook, said that since becoming one of only two live mascots in the AFL five years ago, the British bulldog had lapped up his celebrity status.

“It’s been great. He’s certainly very well known,” Mr Murnane said. “I’d like to say we’vetrainedhimtoactthewayhedoes, but the truth is that he does it all by himself.

“He plays it up for the cameras and if someone is posing for a photo he’ll raise a paw to try to get a pat.” Mr Murnane said a dog like Sid could cost up to $4000.

“ e reason they cost so much is that it costs a lot to breed them,” he said. “ ey’re man-made dogs; they couldn’t really exist in the wild. We have to use artificial insemination to get the female pregnant and they have to be delivered by caesarean.”

e only other club to have a living mascot is the West Coast Eagles, who have a wedge-tailed eagle called Auzzie.

Mr Murnane said the dog was named a er actor and comedian Sid James from the Carry On films, and he hoped he could provide the successor as the Bulldogs’ mascot when Sid retired.

Kevin Hillier says he’s had enough of those tea time phone calls

t least a dozen times a week my home phone rings and it is either silence or one of those annoying telemarketers. Many years ago I had what was called a silent number but, for whatever reason, that ceased and now my number is listed.

Although I’m told it has nothing to do with how telemarketers access numbers – it’s a program that randomly selects numbers – I wish my Tattslotto numbers came up as o en.

I sort of feel sorry for the people ringing as they are only doing their job, except their job invades my privacy.

I usually say hello, let them pronounce my name incorrectly and then say no thanks and hang up. When the calls come in a rash, my tone does get a bit quicker and curter with each call, but I am never rude or swear.

I remember the very funny Seinfeld moment where Jerry said to a telemarketer something along the lines of: “No, now is not a good time. Give me your number and I’ll call you back.”

Rule 1: Telemarketers don’t have a sense of humour. Some people let their children answer

the phone. Some of them now have new energy suppliers and a solar-power unit on the roof.

Rule 2: Telemarketers don’t care what you say. I can vouch for the fact that saying ‘Don’t call this number again” is telemarket-speak for “Please call back again whenever you like”.

Rule 3: Telemarketers have selective hearing. People tell me you can call an organisation and have your number listed so you don’t get calls. Hang on, isn’t that just another place where my number is available for people to see and access? e latest annoyance is telemarketers telling me they’re ringing from Melbourne. Good ploy, except when they say: “It’s a beautiful day, Mr Kevin. How is it in Hoopers Crossing?’’

Rule 4: Telemarketers failed geography in school or are blatant liars. Just when I thought I’d found sanctuary from this nuisance, as in when I’m not home, I got a telemarketer on my mobile telling me I’d won a holiday. I asked if I could give the holiday to the telemarketer. at way we could both have a break.

New bid to deflect graffitists

More than $1.6 million was spent over the past five years to remove illegal graffiti in Wyndham.

A new graffiti management strategy was adopted by Wyndham council on Monday night in a bid to reduce the amount of unsightly tagging in the city .

Cr Peter Maynard said council figures revealed that vandalism was on the rise throughout Wyndham.

“ ere were 4223 graffiti incidents recorded on council’s graffiti database in 2013, which resulted in about 47,000 square metres of graffiti being removed,” Cr Maynard said.

“ is is significantly up from 27,000 square metres removed and 2281 incidents that occurred in 2009, when the previous strategy started.’’

Cr Maynard said the increase in vandalism paralleled population growth.

Big walk a hit to hunger

Western suburbs woman Sherryn Bowers is halfway through a walking challenge in which sheplanstocover500kilometresindailywalks around Melbourne, hoping to raise $25,000 from sponsorship for her favourite charity.

Ms Bowers is walking 10 kilometres a day as she collects funds for e Hunger Project, an organisation that works to empower people in Africa.

She said that a er working and volunteering in Tanzania and Vietnam and seeing severe poverty in person, she was determined to do something.

“ ere are 840 million people around the world going hungry every day and one in every eight people suffers from severe malnutrition,” Ms Bowers said.

“I’ve been to many of the countries where finding enough food to eat is a daily battle.

“Despite the pain of hunger, many of the people I met inspired me because of their tenacity and resilience.”

Ms Bowers said she would be walking 10 kilometres every day for 50 days, which she would balance with her busy job as a leadership coach.

“I made a commitment to myself. I said I wasn’t going to count walking if I just went to the car, or something,” she said.

“I don’t think I realised how much it was going to take out of my day. Some days are fine then other times I get home and I just don’t want to walk another 10 kilometres.”

But she hopes her hard work will be worth it.

“I know people in places like Malawi can lead a better life,” she said. “All they need is a step up, which they can’t make without a helping hand. e Hunger Project is making a long-term investment, something the people will be able to use for many years to come.”

Bandicoot in the spotlight

Visitors to one of Wyndham’s most popular tourist attractions these school holidays will be given the opportunity to see a rare animal up close.

Zoo director Sally Lewis said the opening of the bandicoot hideout would mark an important milestone in the ght to save the Eastern barred bandicoot.

“ is is the rst time that our visitors will be able to come face to face with these amazing animals,” Ms Lewis said. “Werribee Open Range Zoo is part of a successful breeding and release program for the Eastern barred bandicoot and we’ve done a lot of work in

creating a predator-proof haven for the nocturnal species, but until now it’s been di cult to engage our visitors in the ght for its survival.

“ e bandicoot hideout is the missing piece of that puzzle; a fun and engaging place where we hope families will fall in love with the Eastern barred bandicoot … and be inspired to take action.”

Once widespread across Western Victoria, Eastern barred bandicoots are now considered to be extinct in the wild of mainland Australia.

A daily keeper talk in the hideout will give visitors with an opportunity to learn more about the animals and chat to the keepers who care for them. For details visit www.zoo.org.au.

Library booked in for Tarneit

Tarneit will receive a new library, despite fears that a change of government funding might have caused the demise of the project.

Wyndham council confirmed at a public meeting on Monday night that it would go ahead with the construction of Tarneit Community Library.

Cr Gautam Gupta said the council had forged ahead even though it had lost out on previously promised cash.

“Whilst it is encouraging that funding for this project acknowledges the commitment of the state government through … the grant to the value of $750,000, it is equally disappointingthatthepledgebythethenLabor federal government of $1.1 million through the regional development Australia fund has not been honoured by the current coalition government,” Cr Gupta said.

Thai tsunami orphans inspire a super cycle

A year ago, Nathan Cooper was moved by hearing the story of an Australian policeman who travelled to ailand in 2004 as part of a tsunami disaster victim identification team.

Mr Cooper heard stories of the countless ai children le without parents following the Boxing Day tsunami.

He decided to take part in an epic bike ride that would take him to ailand and help raise money to build a much-needed orphanage.

In February, Mr Cooper will ride his bike 500 kilometres in five days from Bangkok to Khao Lak, about 60 kilometres north of the island of Phuket, hoping to raise $5000.

“I just felt it was something I could do,” Mr Cooper said.

“If I can ride the distance and create $5000 that goes towards the orphanage, then why shouldn’t I do that?”

Mr Cooper, who lives in Hoppers Crossing and runs the Werribee RACV Shop, said he regularly rode 100 kilometres in a day but had never ridden that sort of distance for five consecutive days.

“I’m actually really looking forward to it,” he said. “You know when you get a desire to do something that may not be conventional, but you are still really inspired to make a difference? at’s how I feel.”

Federal Lalor MP Joanne Ryan said the federal government’s removal of funding was heartless and had put the project in doubt.

“But because of the callous and heartless attitude of the Abbott government, funding for this project had been cut.”

e council has awarded the $5 million contract to build the 1465 square metre library, which will be built as an extension to the existing Tarneit Community Centre, to McCorkell Constructions.

e cost of the project has been spread over three financial years.

Bus needs ‘not a priority’

Aministerialbriefrevealsthestategovernment decided that Sanctuary Lakes, Seabrook, Laverton and parts of Truganina which relied on buses were not a financial priority, according to Altona MP and opposition transport spokeswoman Jill Hennessy.

As reported by Star Weekly, Laverton residents have to catch a bus and train to travel about one kilometre to Aircra station, a er a direct bus service was scrapped.

Hobsons Bay council slammed the

cancellation of bus routes 413 and 416, which provided a direct bus for Seabrook and Laverton residents to Aircra station and the Aviation Road shopping precinct.

e changes coincided with the opening of Williams Landing station in April last year.

Ms Hennessy told State Parliament there were deep concerns about areas of Sanctuary Lakes, Seabrook, Laverton and Truganina being ‘‘abandoned’’.

“Information I obtained under a Freedom of Information application demonstrated that the government had decided that the

Health Minister David Davis released the Victorian Refugee and Asylum Seeker Health Action Plan 2014-2018 last ursday. eplandetailsastatewideapproachtoearly health assessment and follow-up care for newly arrived refugees and asylum-seekers.

Speaking at the launch at Footscray Community Arts Centre, Mr Davis said the plan provided guidance and support to both people from refugee backgrounds and those working in the health system.

“Refugees and asylum seekers arrive in Victoria with a legacy of poor or interrupted healthcare,” he said. “When refugees and asylum seekers arrive they require comprehensive assessment and access to a full range of primary and specialist care.”

Victoria is home to about a third of all refugeesandasylumseekersenteringAustralia.

e action plan initiative targets five priority areas, including accessibility, expertise in refugee health and communication.

Mr Davis said the $22.2 million, four-year programwasthelargestsinglestateinvestment in refugee and asylum seeker health in Australian history.

e transitional chief executive of health service cohealth, Lyn Morgain, said the plan was developed in collaboration with the Department of Health and key services for refugees and asylum seekers including cohealth, Foundation House and the Victorian Refugee Health Network.

“cohealth has a strong commitment and work under way to implement the priority actions identified in the action plan to ensure that refugees and asylum seekers have access to appropriate preventative healthcare in Victoria,” she said.

communities which rely upon this bus service were simply not a financial priority,” she said.

“People in my community are rightly angry about the government’s failure to address these concerns in the recent budget.”

About 700 people signed a petition calling for the reinstatement of the bus services.

A ministerial brief to Transport Minister Terry Mulder from Public Transport Victoria chief executive Ian Dobbs – dated September 24, 2013 – stated that funding a bus service for Sanctuary Lakes was “desirable”.

“However, such a service could not be

viewed as a priority in the current funding environment,” the brief said.

e brief said that provision of a bus service to Sanctuary Lakes had been costed.

However, the annual cost was blanked out before being released under Freedom of Information.

Mr Mulder’s spokeswoman Jess Maguire said the government was investing $209.5million to operate and maintain the new Regional Rail Link, which included money for new stations in Wyndham Vale and Tarneit.

Cedar Woods, the developer of Williams Landing, is offering local community groups the chance to secure funding for various community initiatives in recognition of the important roles that they play in building healthy and vibrant neighbourhoods.

Mining a ‘risk’ to towns’ water

A gold-mining licence in a water catchment area of the Wombat State Forest, near Spargo Creek, has been met with objections from environmental groups, which say the works could potentially taint the water quality in Ballan, Pykes Creek and Melton.

e newly formed Department of State Development and Business Innovation (DSDBI) approved Armstrong Constructions’ mining licence on May 3, but details of the approval have only recently emerged.

e approval is for a 37-hectare mine near Spargo Creek for a five-year period.

e area is in a water catchment for the

Werribee River. e Wombat Forestcare (WFC) group has confirmed it is also a water catchment area for six major rivers, and says mining would threaten 28 flora and 17 fauna species.

“ e areas haven’t been surveyed properly,” WFC spokeswoman Gayle Osborne said. “We’re concerned that mining and exploration take precedence over protection of water and biodiversity.”

Previously, mining licences were issued by the Department of Primary Industries; they are now issued through the DSDBI because of government restructuring. A WFC report estimates about 10 mining licences are operating in the Wombat State Forest, although

Nurse’s national honour

A Werribee nurse’s dedication to helping patients manage their diabetes has earned her a major nursing award.

Liz Phillips, who works at e Clinic, was given a ‘best practice’ award for ‘quality improvement’ by the Australian Primary HealthCareNursesAssociationa ershehelped set up a system that has improved the care of her patients battling diabetes. e awards recognise nurses doing extraordinary things to improve the health of their communities.

Since joining the practice 10 years ago, Ms Phillips has created a system that manages patient recall, ensuring that those with high blood sugar levels are seen to regularly.

Prior to the system being created, some patients were missing out on regular check-ups.

“Diabetes is an epidemic and we need to manage it to reduce the risk to our patients,

especially those at risk because their bloodsugar levels are high,” Ms Phillips said. “It has made things easier for the practice.”

She was also recognised for her efforts to boost pap testing rates and childhood immunisations.

Ms Phillips said developing the programs was simply part of her job and it had “made things easier for the practice”. “Working as a practice nurse gives you more time to speak to your patients and get to know their health needs. Some of the patients I looked a er when they were in labour, and now I’m looking a er their children, parents and grandparents.”

Nurses association president Julianne Badenoch said Ms Phillips was a leader in her field who displayed exceptional leadership.

there has been no work other than exploration. e proposed Armstrong Constructions works program entails hard rock, open-cut, underground mining and bulk sampling.

Werribee River Association president John Forrester said the planned mining site was where the Werribee River’s headwaters began.

“It’s where our river starts and if there was any sediment and chemicals, Ballan would be the first stop for these loads,” Mr Forrester said.

“ ere are two large reservoirs at Pykes Creek and Melton which go to the town and they’d be affected. e river has precious values and we’re concerned about the quality of water and impact on the community.”

Western Region Environment Centre

directorHarryvanMoorstsaidthedamagethat both mining and exploration of the site could do was unjustified. “ ey have the permits and government support, but the government doesn’t know the extent of the technology they’ll use,” he said. “ ey need to come clean on what they intend to do.”

A DSDBI spokesman said no work plan had been approved or submitted for this licence, which was mandatory before any “ground-disturbing” exploration or mining works could begin.

Bid for extended pokies terms

Lobbying by clubs, pubs and RSLs has prompted the state government to review the currentelectronicgamingmachineentitlement term of 10 years.

Treasurer Michael O’Brien and Liquor and Gaming Regulation Minister Edward O’Donohue released an issues paper on June 12 that considers the possibility and ramifications of offering longer entitlements and asks for industry and community feedback.

e Review of the Gaming Machine

EntitlementTerm follows a request from the Australian Hotels Association, Clubs Victoria, the Returned and Services League of Australia Victorian branch and the Community Clubs Association of Victoria (CCAV) in August last year that the Premier consider extending the term because of commercial challenges faced by hotels and club operators.

Altona’s Jill Hansen has knitted about 1800 beanies for premature babies in Melbourne and children in African nations and Papua New Guinea.

She’s part of a western suburbs knitting group that meets regularly at the Louis Joel Art and Community Centre to make items from donated wool to give to charities.

“I’ve been a knitter for many years,” Ms Hansen says.

“I got the idea through the Louis Joel centre …I’vebecomeobsessedwithitnow.Sometimes I knit two a night.

“I actually saw a program on SBS one night. It was a terrible hospital in Africa and these little tiny babies were born.

‘‘ ey were putting beanies on their heads and I was looking to see if I could recognise them.”

Centre manager Jill Bilston said more than 46,000 beanies, jumpers, scarves and booties

She said knitters also made coats for penguins affected by oil spills.

When the animals are washed, the detergent irritates their skin and causes them to peck themselves. A wool coat protects them until they heal.

Donations of wool are being sought during winter, with knitters on hand ready to create clothes and other items.

“Loads and loads of wool have come in this year, and as soon as it comes in, it goes out,” Ms Bilston said.

are finding it hard to develop long-term business models beyond 2022, when the existing agreements expire.

A CCAV spokeswoman said Victoria’s not-for-profit clubs had need of the security of longer-term tenure so they could continue to plan for improvements to community facilities.

Mr O’Brien said any consideration of entitlement terms must be consistent with existing regulatory arrangements, including Victoria’s cap on EGMs – 27,500 in pubs and clubs – and other responsible-gambling policies.

In April, more than $7 million was lost on poker machines in Wyndham. Wyndham council chief executive Kerry ompson said the council was yet to decide whether it would make a submission on the review.

“Wyndham City is currently reviewing the gaming machine entitlement term issue paper to consider the potential health and wellbeing impacts on the community if the government extended EGM entitlements to 25 years,” she said.

Submissions close on June 30.

New brew beckons for Truganina

A Singapore microbrewery has Truganina in its sights, announcing plans to open a brewery and beer garden in the suburb later this year.

Last week, RedDot, Singapore’s first locally owned, independent commercial microbrewery, announced plans to open at Foundation Road, Truganina.

It will be the first time the company has operated a brewery outside of Singapore.

e Truganina facility will be equipped with two production lines capable of producing

12,000 bottles and 10,000 cans per hour. It is expected to create 25 jobs.

RedDot Brewhouse director Ernest Ng told Star Weekly he chose to open his first international brewery in Truganina because factory space in the suburb was still relatively affordable, allowing him to be part of Australia’s emerging cra beer scene.

“I see that Australians appreciate beers and are very excited about freshly brewed cra beer,” he said.

“I foresee that the cra brew market in Australia will take off in the near future and

Wrapped in a wristband

Wyndham residents are being reminded to throw their rubbish in the bin a er a platypus bound in a silicon wristband was discovered in the Werribee River.

e platypus was found during a recent survey of the river by Melbourne Water to determine the status of platypus populations across the metropolitan area.

Western region waterways manager Cameron Howie said the platypus was not injured by the wristband, but its condition would have deteriorated had it not been found.

“Weandlocalauthoritiesandenvironmental groups do a lot of work to improve the health of the Werribee River so it’s disappointing to see the platypus entangled in litter,” he said.

“When it rains, street litter is washed into drains and flows into the nearest river or creek. Littering is not always a deliberate act; it can simply be caused by rubbish not being securely disposed of or coming loose from overflowing bins.

“We can all help prevent litter from entering waterways by binning rubbish securely and cutting loops like wristbands and hair ties before disposal.”

Wildlife Ecology senior consultant Josh Griffiths said it was essential the Wyndham community reduced the amount of rubbish getting into the river to protect its small platypus population.

“ e autumn survey suggests the population has remained stable in the past year, but that makes it even more important to protect the iconic animal from threats such as litter,” he said. “Platypuses use their bills to forage river bedsforfoodsotheyareparticularlyvulnerable to suffocation and injury from litter.”

The platypus found in the Werribee River with a plastic wristband around its neck.

Girls’ clinic a footy first

e Western Bulldogs are hoping the girls of the west contract a case of football fever this winter.

e Bulldogs have spearheaded the first all-girls Auskick program by a Victorian AFL club. e free program at the Whitten Oval starts at 4pm today, ahead of a women’s AFL clash between the Dogs and Melbourne at Etihad Stadium this Sunday.

Western Bulldogs players Emma Kearney and Mitch Wallis helped launch the initiative at an all-girls footy clinic at North Footscray Primary School last week, along with Bulldogs chief executive Simon Garlick, state Sports Minister Damian Drum and Maribyrnong mayor Grant Miles.

Kearney, a midfielder in the Bulldogs’ women’s team, urged girls in the inner west to give football a try.

Mr Drum said he was pleased to see the Bulldogs take the growth in women’s football in recent years to another level. “Not only are the Bulldogs, along with Melbourne, an AFL club that plays an annual elite women’s match, they now become the first Victorian club to set up their own all-girls Auskick centre to grow female participation at grass roots level.”

e ability to pack a punch has made a western suburbs boxer the best in Australia – and if she has her way, it will make her the best in the world.

Sylvia Scharper, who lives in Footscray and trains at Tarneit Boxing in Hoppers Crossing, recently won the Australian bantamweight title a er three years of competing in the sport.

“I got taken to a muay thai boxing match, fell in love with it and wanted to start training in it,” Scharper said. “I never anticipated that I would actually be competing one day, so to have won a title like this is just amazing.”

Scharper said she gave professional boxing a try as a way to improve her muay thai skills.

“When I rst tried boxing, I literally couldn’t string two punches together because I was so uncoordinated,” she said. “Some people

Refugees fete new lives

While their stories o en share themes of heartache, despair and the struggle to survive, members of Wyndham’s refugee community joined together last week to celebrate the past and the future.

As part of Refugee Week and with the theme of “restoring hope”, a musical event was held at the Werribee Baptist Church.

Police multicultural liaison officer Leading Senior Constable Richard Dove hosted the event.

Richard Deng, who came to Australia from Sudan three years ago, said he enjoyed being able to celebrate what made him unique.

“I’m a Christian and in Sudan you face a lot of discrimination if you’re a Christian,” he said.

Circle lights up the Square

A Truganina company is helping to light up Federation Square this winter. Extrusions Australia helped UK-based architect Asif Khan develop his Radiant Lines art installation, which is on display at Federation Square for its annual Light in Winter Festival. Managing director Rod Fiddes says the company manufactured the aluminium used in the installation from dyes it made in-house. He says about 5200 kilograms of aluminum was used in the piece. Extrusions Australia took about two weeks to manufacture the metal before delivering it to the companies responsible for bending and welding the pieces together. The circular sculpture is made up of 40 rings that appear to be suspended in space. At dusk, hundreds of LED lights illuminate the piece. Fiddes says it’s the rst time the company has been involved in creating such an installation.

Two cricketing legends will be at Werribee Football Club luncheons in coming weeks. This Saturday, Werribee’s favourite son, Tigers’ joint number one ticket holder, life member and former Test star Merv Hughes will be a guest of president John Nicol at the lunch for the clash with Coburg. Hughes is always welcome at any Werribee function and is sure to have a few good stories to tell about his 96 games with the club or his days wearing the baggy green. Saturday is Life Members Day and some of the real stalwarts of the club will be there to see the Tigers take on Coburg.

On July 5, Werribee meets North Ballarat at 1pm at Avalon Airport Oval. The club is delighted to announce that former Australian Test captain Ricky Ponting will be the guest at the president’s lunch. Ponting is a passionate North Melbourne fan and will get to see Kangaroos players in action for both sides in that game.

Ponting has always been a very keen golfer, and may yet pursue a professional career in the not-too-distant future. He is signed to golfing equipment manufacturer Callaway, and the Callaway Kid, as heard on Radio SEN, is Matt Tudor. Tudor has a very strong Werribee connection – he won the Werribee Open with a record score. His father, Des, also coached Werribee’s first premiership team in the VFL Reserves in 1987. Kevin Hillier Tickets for the Ponting lunch are available by calling Janelle on 9741 9862. North Melbourne senior coach Brad Scott will also speak on the day. Cost: $100 for a two-course meal and drinks until game time. Early start 10.30 for 11am.

Werribee’s division two reserves premiers,

A magic piano at the centre of a local production will delight audiences who want to see childhood dreams come to life.

The latest production at the Wyndham Cultural Centre, Still Awake Still!, starts on Saturday, July 5, and is a unique music theatre show for families. It’s based on original lullabies by popular children’s author Elizabeth Honey and Sue Johnson of the acclaimed vocal group Coco’s Lunch.

Miss Ivory Tinklefinger, Queen of Sleep, is hired to sing the audience to sleep but her extraordinary piano has a mind of its own. Her lullabies come alive and the consequences are wild!

Still Awake Still! is part cabaret and part theatre, with a touch of surreal pantomime ... the entire show emerges like magic from beneath the lid of a grand piano.

The Melbourne cast includes brilliant and hilarious actor-musicians Carolyn Connors, Dan Witton and Renato Vacirca and is directed by the celebrated Jessica Wilson.

Producer Rosalind Price says: “Still Awake Still! is not really about sleep; it celebrates the kind of playfulness that’s at the heart of creative life for everyone.” Shows are on at 10.30am and 1pm on Saturday, July 5, at Wyndham Cultural Centre, Werribee. Inquiries:

Make tax time less taxing

With the end of the nancial year approaching, now is the time to think of ways to reduce your tax bill. But you don’t want to fall foul of the Australian Taxation O ce – and that means being aware of the rules governing work-related expenses and steering clear of claims that could make waves.

Each year the ATO focuses on occupations with a pattern of large claims for work-related expenses. Last year, builders and marketing managers were singled out but plenty of other occupations come in for scrutiny.

It’s easy to see why. Work-related expenses have spiked by about 18 per cent since 2007 and are one of the largest categories of claims made in tax returns.

e golden rule at tax time is to only claim expenses that are incurred in earning your income.

If a claim for a piece of equipment or for self-education seems borderline to you, it certainly will to a tax auditor, so you may be better o not making the claim.

Savvytaxpayersbringforwardtax-deductible expenses to the current nancial year and delay income until the next nancial year.

Try to pay expenses for the coming year such as conference and travel costs, association membership fees and income-protection insurance to claim a tax deduction in this year’s return.

Similarly, if you’re in line to receive a bonus, ask your employer to defer making the payment until July.

Receipts and records are mandatory to substantiate most expenses. However, if your expenses total less than $300, you don’t need to provide written evidence.

is is the perfect time of the year to think about how you keep records. Some people have highly organised ling systems supported by accounting so ware; others toss receipts into an old shoe box.

I followed the latter “method” for years, but found I had to devote a day or more each quarter to going through all those bits of paper.

ese days, I’m more organised. I gather all my nancial documents in one place and periodically atten out the receipts and use a highlighter pen to highlight the date and the total claimable amount.

en I sticky-tape the receipts onto a piece of A4 paper, which goes into a lever arch le. It’s a smart strategy to organise separate pages for each category – travel expenses, reference materials, stationery and so on. Or you can catalogue them in date order.

e lever arch le method of handling nancial paperwork makes it far less likely that you’ll open a drawer one day and discover a receipt for a work expense a er you’ve put in your tax return.

e system also works well for keeping bank and credit card statements in order.

Commonly claimed expenses include tools, computers, professional journals, uniforms and special clothing. Be careful, though.

give you the tax bene t you desire. If an item costs more than $300, it must be depreciated over its working life rather than as an immediate tax deduction.

employer allows it. at way, you pay for the item from pre-tax salary and reduce your income tax.

POINT COOK 10 Mowbray Drive, 3030

Filled with natural light, this well-maintained and beautifully presented residence is in the sought-after Innisfail estate, close to buses, schools, shops, parks and childcare facilities. The property has a bright meals-family area with tiled floors leading to the kitchen, which is well appointed with stainless-steel appliances, including a dishwasher and free-standing cooker. The four bedrooms and two bathrooms provide ample space for a family. In the neat backyard, there is a courtyard-style paved area surrounded by low-maintenance gardens. The remote-controlled double garage has rear access. Extras include central heating, landscaped gardens, downlights and security doors. The property is within walking distance of Homestead Reserve and a short drive from Point Cook town centre, Princes Highway and Hoppers Crossing train station.

YPA Estate Agents: 9741 7777 Price: $510,000 – $550,000 Private sale

Class and a contemporary décor are on offer with this residence. With Federation touches, the four-bedroom house will appeal to a family that craves space and style. On about 1000 square metres, it has a carpeted lounge room and separate meals-family zone next to the impressive 2pac kitchen with stone benchtops, glass splashbacks, self-cleaning oven and Miele dishwasher. There’s also a large rumpus/playroom. There are four bedrooms, including the main with walk-in wardrobe and en suite. The study could be converted to a fifth bedroom. The main bathroom and en suite are fully tiled. In the backyard, there’s a stencilled-concrete entertainment zone and solar-heated in-ground pool. Further features include LED lights, high ceilings, decorative cornices, a lock-up garage with rear access to a carport, alarm, video intercom, camera surveillance, ducted heating and evaporative cooling.

Barry Plant Point Cook: 9395 9999

From the bold architecture to an interior t for a glossy mag spread, this house is truly a cracker. Every aspect, inside and out, is buffed to a turn and displays its superiority with a con dent panache.

The re ned colour palette of grey, silver and white is beautifully offset by polished jarrah oorboards, while extra-height doorways, square-set ceilings, bespoke cabinetry and commercial-standard doors throughout are classy, ultra-contemporary nishes. Nothing jars in this place; everything has a harmony and discreet practicality.

Flanking the entry hall are a study and a lounge/theatre room – but neither is ordinary. The study has a void streaming in light and is tted out with top-notch, ultra-chic cabinetry and the theatre room has a rich charcoal feature wall and starlight-studded ceiling.

The hall then ducks to the right to a laundry with stone-topped cabinets, a toilet and access to the double garage, which has remote-controlled back roller door and a bank of vinyl-wrap closets.

Then comes the living hub – and wow. The focal point is a striking gas log re, set in rough-textured tiles, anked by stone-topped, low-slung storage. But just as eye-catching is the adjoining (integrated) outdoor room, entered via huge commercial sliders and exited to a side courtyard via commercial stacker doors. A hooded barbecue under a commercial-quality rangehood, anked by stone-topped vinyl-wrap cupboards and backed by glass and window splashbacks, deliver a room to be enjoyed every day, from morning cuppa to weekend brunch.

And, of course, the kitchen is gorgeous: an immense stone bench, glossy cabinetry,

soft-closing drawers, silvery-grey glass splashback, walk-in pantry with stone bench, dual-drawer dishwasher, 900mm gas cooker and concealed rangehood.

Up solid jarrah stairs, there’s a boarded living room, off which are a chic main bathroom, two bedrooms with mirrored robes and the stylish main bedroom with charcoal feature wall. A tted walk-in robe and frosted-glass sliders to a smart, fully tiled en suite with dual basins on stone-topped bespoke cabinetry and a frameless rainhead shower deliver luxury. Ducted vacuum, Clipsal light-dimmer system, a second courtyard with water feature, garden shed, large-scale bamboo fence screens, modern landscaping and 3.3kW solar power are bonuses of this wonderful Werribee winner.

NEW HOMES AND LAND – Carlisle Homes

Blocks with a 14-metre frontage are becoming more and more common in new land releases and provide a good affordable option for new-home buyers. These blocks tend to be slightly smaller in size than traditional blocks and usually include exible outdoor living options within alfresco areas – which means less garden maintenance.

At Carlisle Homes, the productdevelopment team is very focused on designing homes that not only suit the lifestyle requirements of their broad customer base, but are also aligned with

current and upcoming land releases. The design team works closely with key developer partners to ensure the design range continues to evolve in line with estate land mixes.

“Working in conjunction with our land partners to develop new and evolve existing product is a key part of our ongoing innovation process,” said Shane Rogers, Carlisle Homes’ senior designer. “We are conscious that our design range be always relevant, meeting our customers’ needs, as well as being compatible with land availability to make the decision easier.”

New designs from the T-Range – the Claremont 35 and Cambridge 26 – have both been designed speci cally for 14-metre wide blocks.

“The Claremont is set to be a modern classic with its contemporary oor plan delivering a wonderful feeling of space and light across two oors,” Rogers said. “With a spacious lounge room, separate study and upstairs activity area all complementing the open-plan living area, this is a home ideal for today’s busy family lifestyle.”

Practical family living with affordable luxuries de nes the Cambridge, a

single-storey, four-bedroom showpiece of contemporary home design.

In addition to the T-Range designs, the stunning Montclair and the popular Atlantique from Af nity Collection include variations to suit 14-metre wide blocks.

Writer Loz Blain has good, clean, dirty fun on a quad bike

“What’s the chance of a quad bike review?” our esteemed editor asked. Fairly slim, as it turns out.

Quad bikes exist in a strange legal black hole in Victoria – you can buy them, but you can’t register them for recreational purposes.

Youcangetalimitedkindofroadregistration forthemasa“specialworkvehicle”,buttodoso youneedtobasicallyproveyou’reafarmerwith your own land.

ere are a few “quad bike experience” tours out there that allow you to have a crack at these strange vehicles, so I sign myself up for a two-and-a-half-hour session at Adrenalin Quad Bike Hire in Sale, Gippsland.

Forcompany,IrecruitChe e,atwo-wheeled tarmac terrorist, and my stoutly conservative father,John, whomakesitclear inadvancethat he thinks “quad bikes are for environmental thugs who just want to tear up the soil”.

We are greeted by Gary, who talks us through how to ride our hulking steeds in a manner that makes it clear he’s dealt with some resoundingly stupid individuals in his time.

“ rottle’s over here at your right thumb. is is your front brake. Don’t use it, you’ll probably crash. is is your back brake, it’s been disconnected. is is your park brake, we cut that o as well; people were riding around with the brakes on all day and complaining that the bikes were too slow.”

Che e is assigned a stocky Kawasaki 370, Dad takes the beefy Honda King Quad 500 and I’m given a Honda 400 festooned with so many cable ties that they almost look decorative.

A er a couple of laps around a test loop to make sure we’re not going to kill ourselves immediately, we set o . Our rst few tracks are quitevaried, fromopensmoothpaddocktracks

to deeply rutted backroads where, frankly, it’s amazing the quads don’t get bogged.

In open corners, the best approach seems to be diving in way too fast, throwing your body into the turn, then wrenching the handlebars aroundandmashingthethumbthrottletospin the back out. A er a brief slide, the chunky back tyres will grip and re you out in roughly the right direction. is is most excellent fun.

In the ruts, the best approach is more or less to let the bars move freely as they will, and mash the thumb throttle so the bike can just

slide and steer itself. is is also excellent fun.

Next we’re diving into the bush, dodging tea trees and ducking under branches on tight, technical trails that require a lot of attention.

And then, suddenly, the track opens up and we see the main event – a giant, moist, virgin mud at that spans several hectares. We stop to admire it under the Gippsland sky.

We gas it out onto the mud, and as soon as each bike crosses the line onto the soggy stu , traction becomes a distant memory. e quad bikes just sail gracefully across the surface,

sending up giant rooster tails of chunky mud. Che esailspastatfulllocksideways, engine bellowing and laughing like a madman despite travelling at a fairly sedate 20km/h or so. Dad oats past backwards in a gentle loop, looking slightly dazed. Gary cracks a rare grin. You certainly want to have your wheels pointed in the right direction when you hit the dry stu again because, when the wheels grip, it’s a lot more abrupt than when sliding. I hit the dry at an angle moving at about 40km/h and immediately regret it, nearly pitching myself o the side. But I follow the golden rule – when in doubt, gas it out – and the bike sorts itself out quick smart.

I enjoyed these odd machines far more than I expected. ey’re enormously grunty, quite physical to ride, but lots of fun to stu into tight corners or wrestle around a longer arc. www.adrenalinquadbikes.com

Tigers lap up pressure

Werribee recovered from back-to-back VFL losses in the best possible style with a gutsy nine-point win against Geelong on Saturday.

e Tigers came from behind in the final term to record a 13.9 (87) to 11.12 (78) win and stay in touch with the top four.

In what is traditionally one of the VFL’s toughest road trips, the Tigers ventured to Simonds Stadium under pressure but produced some of their best football of the season to start the match.

Werribee kicked the first goal from a Ben Warren set shot 45 metres out and added another two soon a er through Josh Porter.

Despite the hot start, there was no letting up from the Tigers and when Tim McGenniss kicked his first goal of the match, the scoreboard showed 38-3.

But playing in front of their home fans, the Cats were never going to throw in the towel, and they hit back in the next two quarters.

Geelong shut Werribee down at the attacking end and conceded just two goals in quarters two and three.

e Cats’ forwards combined for nine goals to take a 17-point lead into the last quarter.

ere was one last twist, though, with Werribee rediscovering its first-term form.

Majak Daw kicked two goals to cut the margin to four points before a snap from Jye Bolton from the boundary line gave the Tigers the lead.

Michael Sodomaco then put the icing on the cake, kicking his second goal of the day to seal the win.

Werribee coach John Lamont was rapt with his side’s attitude.

“We were 23 points down in the last quarter and then were able to kick the next five,” he said.

“It’s got to be one of our better wins for the season.

‘‘To turn around from losing two games narrowly, to have that lapse in the second and third quarters but still get it right in the last quarter, keeps us in touch with the top four.”

Werribee (6-4) moved to fi h on the ladder.

e Tigers will look to make it two wins in two weeks when they take on 14th-placed Coburg this Sunday.

“Coburg has given a very spirited account of themselves against Essendon, so we will need to be switched on,” Lamont said.

Seagulls shake off Zebras in the third

Williamstown has maintained its place in the VFL top four thanks to a 24-point win against Sandringham on Sunday.

e Seagulls made the perfect start to the match at Burbank Oval through the fast thinking of Dylan Conway, who snapped the opening goal.

e combination of Sandringham’s errors and sharp goal sense from the Seagull forwards put Williamstown up by 19 points midway through the first term.

Despite the Zebras finally hitting the scoreboard with a major of their own, Williamstown remained in control and took a 20-point lead into the first break.

e momentum continued when play resumed, with Conway’s second goal and majors to Jake Owen and Edward Carr putting the margin beyond 30 points.

As it appeared they were about to be blown away, the Zebras finally strung some goals together just before half-time.

Sandringham booted the final three goals of the quarter to reel the margin back to 21 points.

Williamstown wasn’t about to let the game slip away, emerging from the break keen to

Ԃ Modern football is very different from that of earlier eras, as was revealed last week when I hosted the Inside the Kennel show at the Bulldogs. Young Lachlan Hunter told us that he and three other Bulldogs (Ryan Griffin, Luke Dahlhaus and Jake Stringer) are undertaking carpentry apprenticeships. But this is no ’80s revival; the boys are doing it one day a week. By my calculations, they may be eligible for the pension before they’re qualified chippies. Jokes aside, I can remember Brian Royal working every day as a builder during his playing career; Steve Wallis was an accountant and was studying at uni, and Simon Beasley was a Collins Street stockbroker and the best-dressed bloke in the change rooms. Dougie Hawkins worked at Western Hospital. Contrary to his version, Dougie was not a brain surgeon. It’s good to see current players investing time and effort into setting up post-football careers.

Ԃ Marcus Bontempelli gave Bulldog fans a window to the future with his game against Collingwood two weeks ago. I’m loathe to compare him to players of the past, but he looks to me to be a player who could be as influential as Chris Grant. “Turtle” was one of the Bulldog greats and remains a strong influence at the club as a board member. Bontempelli has something special about him as a player and as a young man. I was really impressed by seeing him hug his dad after that win over Collingwood.

Ԃ After Bontempelli’s Rising Star nomination came the round of media interviews. One radio host showed his lack of class by asking: “How did it feel to be drafted by a bottom club like the Bulldogs?” Give me a break. This commentator, not one of my favourites, lost me completely when this came out of his mouth. I remember as a teenager being told the location of my first radio station. I didn’t care; I was so happy at being given the chance to live my dream. I’m sure young footballers feel the same. Media people need to be a bit more positive in their outlook.

regain control. e Seagulls booted three goals to one in the third term, which proved to be enough to set up a 16.10 (106)-11.16 (82) win. Conway, dangerous inside the 50-metre arc throughout the match, finished with four goals.HewaswellsupportedbyJackJohnstone, Ben Casley, Sean Hetherington and Carr, who all kicked two goals.

Samuel Dunell and Cameron Banfield were among the Zebras’ better players.

e victory means Williamstown remains in fourth spot on the VFL ladder, the Seagulls holding a 7-4 record.

Williamstown takes on 13th-placed Casey this week.

e competition for spots in the Seagulls’ squadwillbetougha ertheclub’sdevelopment league side enjoyed a 103-point smashing of Sandringham on Sunday. Williamstown had 10 individual goalkickers, including best-on-ground Michael Gibbons.

e Seagull development team is in second place on the ladder, four points behind the Box Hill Hawks.

Ԃ Seeing former Werribee players Ben Brown, Luke McDonald, Ben Ross, James Podsiadly and Michael Barlow running around in the AFL and five other former Tigers in the Geelong VFL side that played at the weekend indicates there’s a lot of good football coaching going on at Avalon Airport Oval. Werribee has a special pre-game lunch coming up on July 5 with Ricky Ponting and North Melbourne coach Brad Scott. Bookings: 9741 9862

A big weekend of footyMy best moment so far

Iattended two games of footy at the weekend, giving me some perspective on the pace of change and the depth of tradition in the AFL. e first was our match against Port at the newly minted Adelaide Oval on Saturday. We were generously hosted by David Koch at the president’s lunch, a gathering which lacked a lot of the pomp of the usual functions and made up for it with a warmth and friendliness that made everyone feel at home. Just before the game, they played the INXS song Never tear us apart and the crowd joined in. I made a mental note to talk to Mark Seymour about which song he’d recommend for us. It’s a beautiful oval and a great 21st century attraction for the fans. Get there if you can for our games next year.

On Sunday, I made my way to Victoria Park to watch Footscray play Collingwood in the VFL. e last time I was there, in about 1992, I sat next to Prime Minister Paul Keating and watched Sav Rocca kick 10 or 11 and copped the sort of prime ministerial taunting I thought he reserved for the Tories. e Magpies have torn down a lot of the old stands and made it free admission, with great natural sloping banks. And they have had the great good sense to keep a lot of the old icons, including turnstiles and ticket boxes.

ere were even rusted-on Pies fans at the back of the old grandstand maintaining the chant even when we got eight or nine goals up. Footscray are now 7-3 in our first season back in the VFL and I swear there were 15 guys playing on Sunday who could possibly get picked for the seniors this Sunday.

We brought back Footscray as a training team for the AFL side. But the prospect of Footscray making a serious tilt at the VFL flag is starting to stir in a few people’s minds. I can’t say that, of course, because I’m the president. I’m just taking it one week at a time.

Playing my under-18 year with the NSW-ACT Rams in the national championships, I found myself on a half-back flank and getting coaching advice from Western Bulldogs’ 300-game Hall of Famer Rohan Smith.

roughout that championship campaign I listened to every piece of advice Rohan had for me in his role as Rams’ backline coach. He’d o en tell me to take the game on with my run-and-carry ability and back myself with my skills.

ese are the exact words that rang in my ears at half-time against Collingwood recently.

I have no doubt Rohan’s coaching in those national championships landed me at the Western Bulldogs with pick 31 in the 2009 national dra . But it was his influence a er I was dra ed that has had the most impact.

A er I was dra ed, I found myself at Rohan’s house in the western suburbs of Melbourne about to embark on my first preseason at the club. He’d invited me to stay with him until the footy club sorted out a suitable host family for me to live with.

What started out as a couple of weeks’ stay ended up being a full year.

At half-time against the Pies, Rohan approached me and urged me to take the game on, back myself and play a role in what would be a significant win for our club. He had a look in his eyes that gave me so much confidence in myself and I knew I could play a part in a win for our great club.

A er the game, he gave me a hug and said he was proud of me. I didn’t want to let him down, and for him to say he was proud of me was one of the best moments I’ve had in my short career.

Jets’ form lifts draft prospects

Stuck in last place on the ladder a er three games, it was looking like a tough season for TAC Cup side the Western Jets.

But it was in the club’s round-three loss to Oakleigh that head coach Torin Baker saw the turning point.

His players led for most of the day before being overtaken by a side that is, seven weeks later, on top of the ladder.

“Since the Oakleigh game we’ve been able to play some good footy,” Baker said.

“We have found a level of competitiveness that has been good enough to win us more games than we’ve lost.

“We have had players come into form and the group has a really good understanding of where we need to get to.”

e Jets have since jumped up the ladder, winning six of their past seven games to sit in

thirdspot. eclub’sonlylosssinceroundthree came against the Geelong Falcons three weeks ago.

As well as aiming for a spot in the finals, Baker highlighted the impact playing in a winning side can have on a player’s chances of being dra ed.

“ ere might be some players who are always going to get dra ed because of their performances,” he said.

“ ere are others who really produce when it matters in finals … all of a sudden you can really rocket up the dra order and go from not being in contention to getting dra ed. ere has been a whole history of that happening in the TAC Cup.

“We just want to have that opportunity for our players to potentially play well and maybe get dra ed at the end of the year.”

ree Jets who will no doubt be under dra consideration later in the year are

Connor Menadue, Brayden Monk and Corey Ellis. ey have been excellent in the first 10 weeks of the season, winning praise from their coach.

“Connor has had an outstanding season for us,” Baker said. “When we weren’t going so well in the first few games, he was our best player.

“Another who came in at round three and has really exceeded expectations is Brayden Monk. He has an enormous work ethic and is a guy who competes really hard.

“ en there’s Corey Ellis. I don’t think I’ve seen him play a bad game.”

Following a bye last week, the Jets will take on the seventh-placed North Ballarat Rebels at Eureka Stadium on Sunday.

Skipper Schofield to take on the world

Age is proving to be no barrier for Louis Schofield.

A er first jumping into a sailing boat at the age of seven, the rising star has been climbing the competition ranks at a rate of knots.

By the time he was eight, he had started competitive racing. Two years later, he was skipper of his own boat.

Now 15, Schofield is preparing to compete in his biggest event yet when he pulls on the green and gold to represent Australia at the cadet world championships in England.

ecompetitionwilltakeplaceatWeymouth, on the south coast, starting in mid-August.

Schofield will be the youngest Australian skipper at the championships.

e quick-learning Williamstown High School student has stepped up his training for the event.

“Usually you’re in a learn-to-sail program for a couple of years and then you go up to the cadets as a crew member,” Schofield says.

“I got out of the learn-to-sail program when I

was around 10 so I could start a bit earlier and get better.

“I used to sail only every Sunday, but since I got into the Australian team I’ve been sailing every Saturday in Geelong as well.”

Schofield qualified for the cadet world championships a er finishing eighth at the national titles in Victoria.

His outstanding results will come as no surprise to state coaches, who have had him in the Yachting Victoria junior sailing development squad for the past year.

With the championships less than two months away, the Williamstown resident hopes it’s just the start of his career competing on the big stage.

“ ere’s a bit of nerves involved, but I’m really excited as well,” Schofield says.

“It’s always been one of my dreams to get into the Olympics. Hopefully one day I can get there.”

Schofield has been named as a monthly nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award.

e award is run by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club in conjunction with Star Weekly

Schofield will receive $1000 donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club and other prizes to help in reaching his sporting goals.

e Don Deeble Rising Star award recognises young athletes in the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at a state and national level.

Falcons into decider after shaky start

City West Falcons are into the Victorian Netball League grand final a er smashing Boroondara Genesis by 16 goals last week.

A erwinningall18oftheirregularseason matches, the Falcons made a shaky start to the major semi-final and went into the quarter-time break trailing by four goals.

But as they have been able to do all season, the Falcons came out with all guns blazing in the second term.

ey scored 15 goals for the quarter to turn the deficit into a two-goal half-time lead.

From there, the Falcons added an impressive 33 goals in the second half to take a 58-42 win.

e shooting combination of Kath Knott and Alice Teague-Neeld continued to produce the goods, the pair combining for 51 of City West’s goals.

Julia Woolley chipped in with seven of her own to complete the strong attack.

For Boroondara, Emma Ryde-Coad was the leading scorer, with 26 from 31 shots.

e Falcons will enjoy a week off while the Genesis players will seek to reboundwhentheymeettheSouthern Saints in the preliminary final.

e grand final will be played at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on July 2.

e good news didn’t stop there for City West.

e club’s division 1 side also qualified for the grand final with a nine-goal win against the Southern Saints.

A er leading the major semi-final by four goals at half-time, the Falcons galloped away with the match in the second half as they outscored the Saints by five goals to secure a 52-43 win.

Like their senior counterparts, the Falcons’ division 1 side goes straight into the grand final. Its opponent will be decided this week when the Southern Saints and Geelong Cougars meet in the preliminary final.

Cavaliers triumph in battle of the west

Green Gully continued its strong mid-season form in soccer’s National Premier League with a 3-0 victory over western suburbs rival Werribee City on Sunday.

e Cavaliers scored twice in the first half and once in the second to sink the Bees. Despite the lopsided final score it was a tough hit-out early, with neither team able to break the deadlock.

But the Cavaliers opened the scoring as the clock ticked past the 30-minute mark when Jason Hayne capitalised on a Werribee error.

Green Gully doubled the advantage five minutes later through Matthew Sanders and went to the break in complete control.

e Cavaliers made it 3-0 in the 71st minute through Ratip Cileli to seal the important away win.

Green Gully moved to sixth on the ladder, while Werribee City dropped to ninth.

e Bees will take on Hume City, while Green Gully will meet Dandenong under in round 15 this weekend.

In NPL1, it was a tough day at the office for Sunshine George Cross, which fell 2-0 to Bendigo on Saturday.

e Georgies conceded a goal in each half and have now lost three successive matches to slump to sixth on the 14-team table.

But speaking before the clash with Bendigo, Georgies’ president Jamie Chetcuti said he was still impressed with the way his young side had attacked the season.

“We have a lot of young players who are in a development program,” Chetcuti said.

“Yes, they are going to make mistakes, but we just have to persevere with them until the end product comes to where we want it.

‘‘ ere’s plenty of time to get it right. We’re just trying to build a structure that will set up the club for the next 15 years.”

e Georgies have a great chance to get their season back on track when they meet bottom-of-the-table Brunswick City this weekend.

Tigers talk of the league

Werribee Districts has been the surprise packet of the Western Region Football League season.

Since crossing over from the Victorian Amateur Football Association, the Tigers haven’tmissedabeatintheirnewsurroundings.

e division 1 side’s run of good form continued on Saturday, with the Tigers recording a five-point win over Hoppers Crossing, 8.10 (58) to 8.15 (63).

Werribee is second on the ladder halfway through the season, their only loss coming at the hands of the undefeated Deer Park. ey also had a tie against Port Melbourne in round four.

Werribee Districts’ president Rod Harrington said he was pleased with how the club had fit into its new competition.

“At the start of the year, we thought that if we could end up being nine wins and nine losses thatwouldbeagoodconsolidationyearforus,” Harrington said.

“Coming into a new competition, we didn’t really know what to expect. We thought we had preparedagoodfootyteam.Tobewhereweare has exceeded our expectations.

‘‘ It’s certainly justification for what we have done, for sure ’’ - Rod Harrington

‘‘It’s certainly justification for what we have done, for sure.”

It’s not just the Werribee senior side that has taken all before it in the WRFL.

e club’s reserves are also second on the ladder, while its division 1 and 2 under-18 teams are first and second respectively.

Harrington praised new senior coach Wade Chapman and his staff for the work they had done.

“Wade is getting to know the players a lot more. He’s getting to know their strengths and weaknesses and they’re understanding his message,” Harrington said.

“I know we’re rapt with the way things are going, from both coaching and playing perspectives.

“It’s a great feeling around the playing group to be getting some wins on the board again, which we struggled to do the last couple of seasons.”

As a VAFA side, Werribee Districts lost a lot of home-grown talent to clubs that could pay their players. Now that the Tigers are in a position to offer match payments, the club is balancing getting some of those past players back with the need to maintain its current list.

“We suspect there might be some of those formerplayerswhoareopen-mindedtocoming back to the club next season,” Harrington said.

“Having said that, the most important thing we must do is look a er the players who have

You have coached at a number of levels-suburban, TAC Cup, VFL and AFL Development. Is the message the same at each level?

Yes it is pretty much. My main message to players is about competing. It is about every contest and backing up your team mates. While a team is made up of individuals, the most important message I give to players is, that every individual effort leads to a complete team effort. If everyone plays their role, and does their bit, the team achieves its objective. The message to players is different depending on where they are at in terms of development, age, ambition and expectation. The club recently conducted a one day one night inner –sanctum opportunity for local coaches. What did you hope to impart to them and what did you get from it?

Our coaching staff was all involved and what we wanted to do was, share some new ideas about training drills and about how the game unfolds, and where the game is heading in terms of structures and strategies. We also wanted to showcase how good VFL football is, and what we can offer local clubs and players. We beat Geelong last week, a standalone VFL club that included 5 ex Werribee players. That says a lot about our club. Not only do we have our own VFL sides, we are developing players that are still playing at a top level for other clubs. Ben Brown made his AFL debut last weekend for North Melbourne, another great story for our club. He was spotted in Tasmania by our recruiters and after just one year was drafted, and now is playing at the highest level. Brown, Ross, Podsiadly, Morris, Hartigan. Sherringham are all ex Werribee players who have played AFL this year.

A great testament for the VFL Tigers. Something we are really proud of.

Another big week coming up?

Always. We need to be up and about again this week against Coburg in both levels. I look forward to seeing lots of Tigers fans at Avalon Airport Oval this Sunday.

Staff members specialise in mechanical repairs and servicing and all suspension and performance modifications.

Business owner Daniel Bowen says Trax Industries is the only business in the western suburbs that carries and fits specialist parts for Jeep vehicles.

Good looks and great fun, too

e

first thing that grabs you with the Cerato Koup is its looks. is is a nice-looking car fromanyanglewithasvelteEuropeanpresence whose origins are betrayed only by Kia’s distinctive ‘tiger nose’ front grille.

Inside is aesthetically pleasing, too. e surfaces are of good quality for a base model and have some faux leather trim including the armrests, chrome-looking highlights and a carbon fibre look on the dashboard.

e gauges also look good, being backlit with white numbers and red needles that flank the trip computer showing the usual information like fuel economy and distance-till-empty.

ey’re complemented by a 4.3-inch touch screen that’s easy to read and operate, and syncs without fuss to your device via Blutooth.

e screen also displays the reverse camera, which is enhanced with park assist that also detects objects in front and to the sides of the car with an audible alarm and radar-like display in the trip computer.

e tiny boot lid opens to a pretty decentsized storage area and there’s a full-size alloy spare wheel and tools under the boot floor.

ere’s also plenty of space and comfort for backseatpassengersdespiteitbeingatwo-door.

e 2.0 litre 4-cylinder GDI base model is an interesting car to drive in that it has two personalities. In city traffic it feels like a bigger car that isn’t exactly chomping at the bit.

But put the foot down and suddenly it comes alive. is is a car that seems happy at 3000rpm, which it does very quietly. Going solely by ear you reach 4000rpm before

realising the engine wants a gear change and even then it asks rather politely.

e six-speed manual transmission is very forgiving. e clutch has a nice balance and youcanalmostdrivethisentirelyinfourthgear (not that you would).

And it handles nicely, too. ere’s barely any body roll around bends making it fun whether it’s zipping through roundabouts or driving

through the alps. ree steering settings, including sport, add to the driving experience.

Despite its racy looks, this isn’t a sports car but, even without the 1.6-litre turbo available up the price range, it makes for a fun little tourer and head-turning daily drive.
