A new $28 million building at Werribee Mercy Hospital is in danger of closing just four months a er it opened because of federal and state budget pressures.
e Catherine McAuley Centre is a rehabilitation and geriatric medicine complex built to cater for patients in Melbourne’s west who are recovering from surgery or serious injury.
e two-storey building, opened in February, offers an in-patient ward with 30 multi-day beds, eight two-bed rooms and 14 single-bed rooms.
It also includes a gymnasium, meeting rooms, staff rooms and offices on the ground floor.
But Lalor MP Joanne Ryan said funding cuts to Mercy Health, which runs the hospital, could close the new sub-acute and rehab facility.
Mercy Health executive director of health services Dr Linda Mellors confirmed that federal funding for sub-acute services in the new building would end on June 30.
“We’re now waiting on our budget for the next financial year,” she said.
“ e rehabilitation and geriatric evaluation and management beds have been full almost since we opened.
“ ese services were desperately needed and I’m certain the community would be disadvantaged if they were no longer available.”
Ms Ryan said Mercy Health had been hit with funding cuts of $29.4 million over the next four years.
“Mercy Health in Werribee has well-trained and dedicated staff; some of the top experts in Victoria choose to work at this service,” Ms Ryan said.
“But this makes their task so much harder. Not only is there no new money to fund for growth, it cuts expected operation funding. is will have an immediate impact.
“ is funding cut has the potential to put the brand new sub-acute and rehab facility under threat of closure.”
A spokesman for federal Health Minister Peter Dutton said health funding to Victoria would rise from $3.46 billion in 2013-14 to $4.69 billion by 2017-18.
‘‘ We need further investment, not cuts ’’
-JoanneRyan
“In regards to sub-acute beds, Ms Ryan knows full well that was a one-off funding arrangement, like many other programs provided to the states,” the spokesman said.
“Ms Ryan should explain why she’s attempting to mislead her constituents and why Labor didn’t make any funding available in their forward estimates.”
But Ms Ryan said that when compared to Labor’s last budget, the Abbott government was investing $3.2 billion less for public hospitals and Wyndham residents could not afford to see health services go backwards.
“Peter Dutton has very limited understanding about the health needs of this community,” she said.
“We’re a high-growth area that requires further investment, not cuts.
Star Weekly revealed in May that Werribee Mercy had missed out on $85 million requested from the state government for new operating theatres, an in-patient unit, central sterile supply department,andeightcritical-care beds.

e state and federal governments have been accused of jeopardising safety and risking more congestion on the Western Ring Road by diverting $500 million in funding to the East-West Link.
Opposition roads spokesman Luke Donnellan said the money would have been used to fund vital upgrades to the Western Ring Road.
“ e Abbott and Napthine governments have essentially stolen $500 million from the Western Ring Road upgrades to pump up
their dud east-west tunnel, which still has no business case and won’t reduce congestion for thousands of motorists across Melbourne’s west for more than a decade,” he said.
Keilor MP Natalie Hutchins said the western suburbs needed the Western Ring Road to continue to be upgraded.
“ e road is one of Melbourne’s most important transport links, and ripping away funding from the project will mean more congestion and less safety in years to come,” Ms Hutchins said.
According to Labor, the $500 million was originally intended as part of a $2.25 billion
project that would have provided extra lanes and improved signage and signals along the Western Ring Road.
More than 130,000 vehicles use the busiest section of the road – between the Tullamarine Freeway and Pascoe Vale Road – every day.
In April, Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced he would contribute $1.5 billion to fund the western section of the East West Link, meaning stages one and two of construction would take place almost simultaneously.
Star Weekly contacted the state government for comment, but it did not respond before deadline.
One of Wyndham’s worst crash blackspots will be removed, with the state government to spend $1.6 million improvingtheOldGeelongRoad-Forsyth Road intersection at Williams Landing. e funding will be used to realign the road to reduce the curve as it meets Forsyth Road, to install new signs, remove trees and relocate street lights to improve visibility.
Since 2007, the road has been the site of six run-o -road crashes and one fatality, prompting the government to spend $880,000 in 2012 to install tra c lights at the intersection with Forsyth Road.
Businesses and Truganina South Primary School have been calling for the intersection to be made safer, warning the number of accidents is on the rise.
Roads Minister Terry Mulder said the project would provide extra protection for pedestrians and motorists.
e upgrade to Old Geelong Road follows an announcement by the federal government that it will spend $345,000 to improve blackspots in Werribee and Little River.
Infrastructure and Regional Development Assistant Minister Jamie Briggs said $315,000 would be spent installing guardrails at Sandy Creek Road, south of Little River-Ripley Road.
e remaining $40,000 will be spent on warning lights in Cottrell Street, at Market Road, to remind motorists to give way to pedestrians.

More than 4000 Wyndham residents will lose their jobs in the next three years as a result of Australia’s auto industry closures, a University of Adelaide study has found.
e study by the Australian Workplace Innovation and Social Research Centre and National Institute of Economic and Industry Research analyses direct and flow-on job losses resulting from the closure of Toyota, Holden and Ford plants.
e study predicts 200,000 job losses nationwide, with about half of those in Victoria.
It finds Wyndham residents will be among the state’s hardest hit, with the municipality likely to record the fi h-highest number of job losses by employee residents.
It’s expected that 4360 Wyndham residents in the auto industry will lose their jobs by 2017 But the worst-hit municipality will be Casey, where 6734 residents will become unemployed.
In a bid to reduce the impact of the job losses on Wyndham, the council has joined other western suburbs councils, the state government and advocacy group LeadWest. ey commissioned research on businesses that will be affected by the closures and will use the research to promote creation of local jobs.
e council’s economic development unit is meeting companies to discuss the issues they are dealing with and to identify training opportunities.
Cr Gautam Gupta said the council’s research found there could be flow-on losses from the auto industry closures, forcing Wyndham manufacturers to close their doors.
“Manufacturing accounts for 14.4 per cent of total employment in Wyndham so any downturn in that sector will have an impact on the resident workforce,” he said.

Ifyou’veeverwonderedhowtobrewyour own cider or raise chickens in your own backyard, then winter is perfect for you.
Wyndham council is holding winter weekend workshops at which residents can learn about a wide range of activities.
Councillor Adele Hegedich said the workshops would cost participants $5.
“[ ese] workshops will allow our residents to learn a new skill, meet new people and familiarise themselves with their local community centre,” Cr Hegedich said.
e workshops would also give residents a chance to check out their local community centres.
Other workshops will include, making gi cards, killer cupcake decoration, harmonica blues for beginners, yarn bombing, modern henna and blogging basics.
“I encourage people to check out the calendar of events and see what workshop appeals to them,” Cr Hegedich said.
“With Wyndham growing so rapidly, these workshops are an ideal way to get to know your neighbours and your neighbourhood.”

Wyndham residents will soon have another voice to represent them, with a former councillor involved in setting up the rst city-wide residents group.
Marcel Mahfoud, the current vice-president of the Truganina Community Group, said a broader body was needed.

Out of the loop
In making his claims, Roads Minister Terry Mulder is ignoring the petition signed by 1300-plus residents – 15 per cent of the population here – and the hundreds of letters I delivered to him (‘Altona Loop commuters slam minister’s train claims’, Star Weekly, June 4).
He has not listened to the 10 or more times I’ve raised it in Parliament. He’s ignored the multiple protests at Parliament and at his ministerial office, and he’s overlooking the multiple community meetings attended by hundreds – the most recent also attended by one of his own MP colleagues.
Mr Mulder ignores his own customer satisfaction survey results, which show time after time that it’s here we have the most dissatisfied commuters on the whole network.
It also appears he doesn’t read newspapers or watch the news because the Altona Loop community has been in both on multiple occasions.
Is the government listening to the community? It’s clear the answer is no.

The naked truth
I have travelled extensively around Australia and have seen that there is no shortage of beaches for people who prefer to wear clothing at the beach (‘Nude beach review’, Star Weekly, May 28).
To naturists, these people are known as “textiles”. Naturists do not begrudge textiles the amount of beaches that are available to them, nor do they judge the fact that textiles choose to wear attire at the beach.
Naturists do not go nude to shock or
make a statement to others; they choose to be naked because it’s comfortable. If I have to make a choice of wearing bathers to swim rather than be allowed to swim naked, I won’t swim at all.
We have very few beaches available to us (naturists) on which to exercise our freedom of choice. So why not leave Victorians the for-clothing-optional beaches we have and plant more trees to provide the privacy that council says is lacking around Campbells Cove?

Merit matters for Bulldogs
Hi there, Mr Gordon. I am pleased to write in upon reading your article and say what a good job you did with it! I do have a few questions, though. I like a lot of things the club is doing towards reaching the goals of being a real community-style club and “winning the west”.
I’ve been a member my whole life and plan for it to pass through generations. One thing that’s been on my mind is team selection. I often scratch my head over Thursday’s selections, seeing Tom Williams in a side that’s developing and bringing through young talent. I see him have a less-than-average game at the weekend, yet he’s constantly picked ahead of young players such as Jack Redpath or Tom Campbell.
I see Liam Jones get selected week in week out, as if he doesn’t need to be forced to stand out in order to be selected.
I go to a Footscray VFL game and watch Redpath bag four goals while Jones struggles to get a disposal for the Dogs.
This is how it looks to me, and speaking to fellow Bulldogs fans I hear the same view.
I’d like a little more insight on how players are going [and] why they have been picked. I strongly believe that picking youth over Williams – who I believe will struggle to see a premiership – will bring the crowds back.
People are old-fashioned. They like to hear a player has worked hard to be selected, not the opposite. I’d love to hear others’ views on this and see a lot more articles/videos on our youth development. Keep up the good work!
Go, Dogs!

Shabby treatment for Manor Lakes Yet again, the City of Wyndham is seen as unworthy of significant government investment or development (Manor Lakes: suburb bid wins support, Star Weekly, June 4).
Our community is a mix of white and blue-collar workers who deserve to have the opportunity to work closer to home. Yet here again we have the shortsighted view from those in charge that Wyndham is a backwater with not much to offer. That, along with the distinct lack of interest in improving transport options to Melbourne and beyond, signals clearly that we are not on government or opposition radar at all. CeeMee, via web

One of Werribee Zoo’s newest and rarest arrivals has been given a name fitting of her heritage. The one-month-old female Przewalski’s horse foal, a rare animal native to western Mongolia, was born to mum Hatan on Mother’s Day. The president of the Mongolian Association of Victoria, Bayarkhuu Purevdorj, said the community of fewer than 200 Mongolians living in and around Melbourne had named the foal Hatan – ‘‘Queen’’ in Mongolian. “Naming her created a lot of excitement and energy,” he said. “Przewalski’s horses are incredibly important in Mongolian culture and we think the name Hatan is very fitting.” Hatan is the second foal Mahan has given birth to on Mother’s Day, with her first born in 2012. Przewalski’s horses were declared extinct in the wild in the 1960s but there are now about 300 living in their natural environment after a successful breeding program in zoos. Keeper Phoebe Allen said zoo staff were excited by the new foal. “After almost losing these amazing animals, it’s wonderful to see their numbers increasing around the world,” she said. “Hatan is such a joy. She’s very confident and inquisitive.”

While they may not have even started school yet, some of Werribee’s youngest residents are being exposed to tertiary education.
Deakin University has joined with Corpus Christi Primary School in Werribee to launch a playgroup that will be run by students from Deakin’s Werribee Learning Centre.
Deakin University education professor Andrea Nolan said the Corpus Kids Playgroup was a pilot program that would provide a variety of experiences for children and their parents.
“We’reexcitedtobepartofthisprogram, asit willgivetheyoungestmembersoftheWerribee community a chance to learn while at play, at the same time providing Deakin researchers and bachelor of early education students the
opportunity to gain critical observation and experience of how children learn and develop through play,” Professor Nolan said.
Corpus Christi principal Linda Roynic said the playgroup was among a number of strategies the school was implementing.
“Finding innovative ways of engaging families in our learning community and developing a sense of partnership with them is a key objective,” Ms Roynic said.
e pilot program is operating this month each Wednesday from 9-10am at Corpus Christi Primary School.
It’s hoped it will become a permanent xture at the school.

Shawn Read hopes to mark his swimming school’s 20th anniversary with a win at the Wyndham Business Awards later this year.
Mr Read is nominated for the business person of the year award, while Shawn’s Swim School is entered in the ‘service’ category. is is the third year that Shawn’s Swim School has entered the awards. It won the city’s small business award in 2004.
Mr Read said he jumped at the chance to enter this year’s awards, believing they were a good way to recognise the hard work and dedication of his sta over 20 years.
“We’ve changed a bit since we opened in 1994 and I thought it would be a good way to mark the changes,” he said.
“When we opened, we had one pool and taught 40 children a week. At rst it was just my sister and me teaching, but we grew to 10 employees by the end of the year.
“In 2005, we added another pool. Now we teach 2500 students a week.”
Mr Read said his goal was to teach as many children to swim as possible. e school recently increased its capacity to allow more children to have lessons while Wyndham Leisure and Events Centre is redeveloped. e businessman is also dedicated to doing his bit for the community.
“Last year, we organised a fund-raiser for a student with a brain tumor to help her family,”
Mr Read said. “In six weeks, we are organising a fund-raiser to help Vietnamese children ... 29 kids a day drown there and we want to open a community program.”
e business awards will also celebrate their

20th anniversary this year. Nominations close on June 27 and winners will be announced at a presentation evening on August 29. For more information, visit: wyndham.vic. gov.au.business/2014awards

Luke Wenlock and Chris McMinn are on a mission to get Wyndham men to discuss their mental health. The pair, who are heavily involved in local sports clubs, have organised a community night at which health professionals and sports identities will share tips for dealing with everything from stress to depression. They have been planning the event for about 18 months after watching mental health issues affect members of their community. “We think that people are ready to hear about and discuss the issues,” Mr Wenlock said. “We want to talk about men’s health in an informal way. We are both involved in sports clubs and believe clubs should be talking about these issues. They are real and they are costing lives.” The event, on June 21 at Wyndham Vale Football Club, will include speeches from Werribee GP Joe Garra and Australian netballer Eloise Southby. Attendees will receive a gift bag from South Western Melbourne Medicare Local lled with advice and contact numbers to use in times of need. Inquiries: 0412 999 377 Laura Michell

A Wyndham school has become the rst in Victoria to receive an award as part of the state government’s Healthy Workplace Achievement Program.
eprogram, supportedbyHealthyTogether Wyndham – a healthy-lifestyle initiative of the council – encourages workplaces to support better health for sta .
Wyndham mayor Bob Fairclough said Tarneit Senior College had been recognised for taking the initiative and making the school a healthier place to work.
“Tarneit Senior College and its teachers are now in a better position to set a healthy example to students and the broader school community,” Cr Fairclough said.
“I encourage all Wyndham schools to consider running the Healthy Workplaces Achievement Program. Supporting better health at work increases productivity, improves sta retention and reduces sick leave.”
e Tarneit college’s maths and science teacher, Brenda Prager, was the driving force behind the program being implemented at the school.
“I began by asking sta for their options on whichofthe vepriorityhealthareasofalcohol, healthy eating, mental health and wellbeing, physical activity, and smoking they wanted to focus on,” Ms Prager said.
“Since then, sta have decided they want more support at work to promote healthier eatingandpositivementalhealthandwellbeing.

Wyndham residents have dug deep to help neighbours who are struggling, with the local Salvation Army raising a record sum during its annual Red Shield Appeal.
Captain Lance Je rey revealed that from May 19 to 31, the Salvos raised $62,841 in Wyndham.
“It’s unbelievable how generous people are,” Captain Je rey said. “We’re pretty rapt because this is the most we’ve ever collected here.”
He said the money would not necessarily stay in the Wyndham community but would be used to support social programs throughout Melbourne.
“While the money won’t be used just in Wyndham, the reality is there are many people in our community who we might refer to the programs that this money will help fund,” he said.
Captain Je rey said about 90 people every day were seeking assistance from the Salvation Army in Werribee, and it was encouraging to see people so willing to donate.
“I think there is a natural empathy in this community,” he said.
“ ose people who know what it’s like to be doing it tough seem to be more willing to donate and help out others.
“We were hoping to raise about $52,000 and we thought that would be a real challenge.
“We just really want to thank everyone who donated, and especially the volunteers who donated their time so generously and worked to help raise this money.”
e nal gure raised by the Salvation Army during the appeal is likely to rise above the current amount, with donations raised through telemarketing yet to be taken into account.

But to do this, we need a more flexible model that allows us the freedom to deploy our police members where they are needed, when they are needed.”
Police Minister Kim Wells backed the Blue Paper last week. He said frontline taskforces that had already been set up by the chief commissioner were more effectively targeting key crime areas, such as family violence, organised crime, outlaw motorcycle gangs, road safety and the drug trade.
Crime statistics released last month show a 2.5 per cent increase in overall crime across Brimbank, with a 9 per cent increase in drug offences and decreases in car the s, residential burglaries, street assaults and property damage.

Young drivers from Melbourne’s west are being given a helping hand to ensure they know how to stay safe when behind the wheel.

Courtney Harman, pictured, is a program leader with Fit2Drive (F2D), an initiative that breaks down the barriers between lecturers and students to help the road safety message sink in. Ms Harman, 24, has been travelling to high schools across the west to arm students with the knowledge they need to be safer drivers.
“I found out about the program when they came to my university to hold a workshop,” Ms Harman said. “I was studying teaching and this seemed like it would be a lot of fun but it also had some really good messages.”
Ms Harman said F2D was not about standing in front of students and telling them what to
do, a tactic that o en had a negative effect. “It’s not about telling them ‘You will die if you don’t listen to us’, it’s about giving them strategies so they know how to respond in different situations,” she said.

Ms Leong said many families could not afford to pay for their children to do physical activities like Auskick or dance classes outside kinder.
Healthy Fit instructors have been teaching children to do push-ups and sit-ups and take part in sprints, obstacle courses and games.
Ms Leong said the kids can’t wait to see their instructors. “We don’t force the children to do something they don’t want to do,” she said. “It’s all fun. It’s all in the name of play and experimenting, and the kids love that.”

e state government has joined the opposition in calling on the federal government to ensure there is work for Williamstown’s 1000 shipbuilders in the wake of Friday’s announcement that two new navy supply vessels will be built offshore.
Victorian Manufacturing Minister David Hodgett said his government was seeking a commitment from the Abbott government that Williamstown’s BAE shipyard will be given work on the two replenishment vessels to be sourced from Spain or South Korea.
As reported by Star Weekly in April, Gellibrand Labor MP Tim Watts said unless new work contracts were awarded to BAE, the shipyard would close.
Current work at BAE runs out in January.
On Friday, Mr Watts said the government had “torpedoed the local shipbuilding industry”, while the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union labelled the move to source ships offshore as “insidious”.
Mr Hodgett urged the federal government to guarantee work for local shipbuilders and re-allocate work to Williamstown under its Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) program.
“While it’s disappointing the federal government has announced it will source two vessels from Navantia in Spain or Daewoo in South Korea, we believe there are significant opportunities for BAE to be involved and complete work on the vessels at Williamstown in the same way they have done on the amphibious assault ship,” he said.

While he welcomed the federal government’s decision to fast-track at least 20 replacement steel-hulled Pacific patrol boats, Mr Hodgett said there would be open competition among Australian shipyards for the work.
“We urge the federal government to ensure that the awarding of this contract is done urgently as we believe BAE Systems is in the best position to deliver steel-hulled vessels,” he said.
BAE spokesman Simon Latimer said timing was critical.
‘‘ We believe BAE Systems is in the best position ’’ –DavidHodgett
“We believe our highly skilled team, our Williamstown shipyard and the reach back we have to the extensive naval shipbuilding capability that exists in our international organisation can play an integral role in the AWD project,” Mr Latimer said.
“We will be putting a strong case to the federal government that we’re ready to take on additional work and responsibilities to help deliver this significant national project.
“We look forward to quickly discussing with the government these challenges and the solutions that are available to it.
“Once we have done so, we will provide further specific comments regarding both short- and long-term plans for our company’s shipbuilding operations in Australia.”

“So, how’re ya likin’ Baw-ston?” our cab driver inquired as we dripped January sludge all over his leather upholstery. “You know it’s the oldest town in the US, right?”
It was our final night in Boston, but the first time we’d come across this nugget of information. “Yeah, yeah, you know, I mean some town in Virginia says that they are but actually we were the first,” he continued in his distinct Boston drawl.
A little research reveals that St Augustine, Florida, is the only city that can lay claim to

that title. Historians place Boston around fi h or sixth on the list, although it is home to America’s oldest park, Boston Common; oldest university, Harvard; and oldest pub, e Bell in Hand Tavern.
However, I suspect these details are of little consequence to the cabbie, who, like most Bostonians, is proud of his town.
Historically, the city is known as the backdrop for many of the turning points of the American Revolution.
Today, central Boston is a hodgepodge
of wonderfully intact colonial buildings dwarfed by skyscrapers and cutting-edge urban planning projects that reflect the city’s progressive spirit. is landscape is home to just 600,000 people, who enjoy proximity to a disproportionately large number of educational institutions, cultural establishments, landmarks and sporting franchises.
It may not be the oldest, but there’s lots to boast about.

Harvard University
A short train journey from the centre of Boston, America’s oldest and wealthiest private college is every bit the picture of prestige that Hollywood would have you believe. The college offers several walking tours documenting Harvard’s history, traditions, famous alumni and old wives’ tales.
The student-led Hahvahd Tour is free, but expect to tip $10 towards their next keg. Presiding over historic Harvard Yard is the bronze statue honouring college benefactor John Harvard. Have a chuckle at the prospective students clustered at his left foot – it’s tradition to rub it for luck – but probably best not to mention the university’s acceptance rate of around 7 per cent each year, the lowest of all the Ivy Leagues.

Newbury Street’s eight blocks of Victorian brownstones have been one of the city’s most desirable addresses since the 1880s. This three-star guesthouse was renovated in 2009, its period features restored and amenities updated. Accommodation is comfortable and stylish but location is the real drawcard here, with Boston Common at one end of the street, baseball’s hallowed Fenway Park at the other, and the city’s best shopping in between.

Blessed with a beautifully restored circa 1903 Beaux Arts exterior, the 63-room XV (said as Fifteen) more than holds its own among the historic architecture that lines the cobbled streets of Beacon Hill. There’s a complimentary car service to ferry guests around the downtown area but when the call of the canopied bed is too strong, a well-stocked minibar and 24-hour room service from the hotel’s modern steakhouse, Mooo, ensures a great night in.

550 Tremont Street, Boston » bandgoysters.com
Oysters might be the name of the game at this South End seafood bar, but it was their clam chowder that earned Boston Magazine’s praise in the 2013 Best of Boston Awards. A mainstay of the New England menu, chowder – or chowdah, in the local vernacular – is a rich, creamy seafood stew made with clams and diced potatoes. It isn’t the prettiest dish, but it tastes divine. Naturally, oysters account for a signi cant chunk of the B&G menu (12 varieties in total), but chef Barbara Lynch has ensured there is a seasonal seafood dish to hit every spot, and reasonably priced wines to match.

Erin Giansiracusa is the creator of The Mum’s Group, an online community where mums can find support, get advice, share their experiences and even make a new friend or two.
Erin’s website (www.themumsgroup.com.au) features yummy recipes for time-poor parents and food-related articles, including a piece on Melbourne’s top kid-friendly cafés and restaurants.
“As a new mum, I found so much support from my own mother’s group, but along the way I have learnt not everyone has the same experience,” Erin says.
“I thought, what better way to support all of the mums out there, than to create our very online mum’s group?”
With two beautiful boys – Gus and Eddie – and another baby on the way, Erin has a few tricks up her sleeve when it comes to cooking. Investing in a Thermomix is one of them. Erin was happy to chat to Food Bytes about her kitchen capers … not to mention her love of chocolate!
FB: How would you rate your cooking skills?
EG: My cooking skills are improving. Since becoming a mum, I definitely spend more time in the kitchen and have come to really enjoy baking. I love making muffins and home-made muesli bars for the kids.
FB: What is your signature dish?
EG: A chilli-tuna pasta. It’s extra zingy thanks to some lemon zest added at the end.
FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be?
EG: Hmmmmm – chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate? No? OK, maybe sushi or sashimi for entree, a beautiful slow-roasted leg of lamb and vegies for main, then a chocolate fondant with lashings of cream for dessert.
FB: What is your favourite food?
EG: Chocolate. Sorry, boring but true.
FB: What is your favourite drink?
EG: Coffee. But that’s a necessity with two (soon to be three) kids under four!
FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner?
EG: It might sound cheesy, but I would have to say my husband and children. And maybe Dora the Explorer to entertain the kids while we eat.
FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us?
EG: A Thermomix! It is truly a remarkable piece of equipment and has changed my cooking entirely. Also don’t be afraid to stray from the recipe occasionally and add your own flair. That’s when the best dishes are created.
Erin’s eBook – What I Wish I Knew About Pregnancy – is available at www.themumsgroup.com.au

Since we’re on the subject of kids, a great gadget I discovered at the Werribee Harvest Picnic is the Kiddies Food Kutter. With its stainless-steel rounded teeth, no sharp edges and specially designed handle, it teaches kids to cut their own food safely at the dinner table. That’s one less job for mum and dad! Adult supervision is required. Check it out at www.kiddiesfoodkutter.com.au

Free wine. Now that got your attention.
Afewweeksago,Burgundy-basedAustralian winemaker Jane Eyre recommended tasting as much wine as possible to get a good idea about what you like.
Eyre wasn’t talking about liking chardonnay above sav blanc or shiraz before cabernet sauvignon, but getting to know your favourite grapes better.
Chardonnay-lovers should get to know the difference between the Yarra Valley, MorningtonPeninsula,BurgundyandChablis.
You don’t need to be a lawyer, surgeon or chief executive and have an iron-clad liver to do this. You don’t need to be a wine writer either.
Every weekend, and on the occasional weeknight, Melbourne’s better wine shops host tastings of local and imported wines.
ese can be pretty special tastings, too. More o en than not the wines are poured by the producer.
One week it will be a local winemaker pouring and talking about their wines and the next a Bordelais talking about the value of merlot in their wines or a riesling producer talking about the way residual sugar affects their wines.
O en, the wines are offered at a discount if bought on the day of the tasting.
I’velearntsomuchaboutwineattheseevents –mydadandIwereregularsatthePrinceWine Store in South Melbourne for years – and have a stash of the wines I bought at these events in my cellar.
Every time I open one of the bottles, the conversations are brought back to life, the memory of the first tasting enhancing the wine’s enjoyment even more.
Sign up at the shops’ mailing lists online or in-store to find out when the tastings are. A few of the Saturday tastings in winter are after the early kids’ activities and before the footy – leaving just enough time to select a wine or two for dinner or the cellar.
Prince Wine Store \ Tastings, which vary from regions to wine styles, run most Saturdays 11am-1pm. 177 Bank Street, South Melbourne. www.princewinestore.com.au

Pei Modern \ This city restaurant regularly hosts local independent winemakers for a couple of hours on Fridays from 4.30pm – a perfect start to the weekend. Collins Place, 45 Collins Street, city. www.peimodern.com.au
Armadale Cellars \ Armadale Cellars runs regular structured tastings, often for a small fee, rather than at a set time each week. 813-817 High Street, Armadale. www.armadalecellars.com.au

Rathdowne Cellars \ Tastings run most Saturdays from 2-4pm at this wine shop every suburb wishes it could call its own. 348 Rathdowne Street, North Carlton. rathdownecellars.com.au
Nicks \ Nicks closed its Armadale store a couple of years ago, but its Doncaster East home always has open bottles of current-release wines on the counter to taste and try before you buy. 10-12 Jackson Court, Doncaster East. www.nicks.com.au
Vintage Cellars \ Tasting time at Vintage Cellars stores is 4-7pm Fridays and 12-2pm on Saturdays. Sign up for Vintage Cellars membership to be kept abreast of tastings at your local shop. All stores. www.vintagecellars.com.au

In a regular series, Western Bulldogs president Peter Gordon and player Jordan Roughead write exclusively for Star Weekly

THE PRESIDENT
Peter Gordon
God, I hate losing.
And while Brisbane played well at the weekend, I’m sick to death of acknowledging the improvement of our competitors. We are not in this competition to make up the bloody numbers. We have to li .
We all have to try harder and get better, from the president down. Nothing is more important than winning games of footy.
Here are my other messages to you.
1. We will expect maximum effort and competency from every director and employee of this club to help us to li … players, coaches, physios, weight coaches, you name it.
2. Some so-called supporters have the nerve to write to me complaining about effort by the team when they haven’t even renewed their membership or, having renewed it, haven’t honoured their payments obligations. To those so-called members and supporters, to quote Elvis … “Clean up your own backyard before you come lecturing me”.
3. Some other so-called experts write that these kind of performances mean we will soon be out of existence. Time for a reality check! We will make a profit this year. We’ll have paid down $2 million off club debt by season’s end. We’ve cemented an historic equalisation agreement with the AFL which provides us with better financial security and opportunity than we have ever had. Our membership will be in the top three in our AFL history, even with three years of indifferent on-field performances. We’ve cleared years of roadblocks to our $30 million Edgewater facility and it opens early next year. If that sounds to you like anorganisationgoingoutofexistence, timetogobacktobusinessschool.
4. I’m proud of all those things. But if anyone thinks any of us is happy to see us puddle along with a 20-something per cent win-loss ratio, they don’t know me and they don’t know us. We will get better.

THE PLAYER

Western Jets star Liam Duggan has heard all the talk of him being a high dra pick in this year’s AFL national dra .
“ e speculation at the moment is hard to miss,” the Bacchus Marsh resident says.
“But I don’t let it get to my head and I keep enjoying my footy.
“You know it’s there, but you can’t let it affect you.”
Based on the 17-year-old’s start to the TAC Cupseason, thespeculationislikelytoincrease. Having spent last year as a defender, Duggan wasthrownintothemidfieldmixin preseason.
He hasn’t looked back, averaging 22 possessions a game for the Jets.
“It’s obviously been good, moving into the midfield this season,” Duggan says.
“I played juniors as a midfielder and was happy to go back there.
“It was something I wanted to do at some stage this year, but I would have been happy to play anywhere.”
e Western Bulldogs supporter said he wasn’t content to stick to the centre of the field.
“I want to go forward as well and be a goalkicking midfielder.
“I did it last week as I had a knock on my leg and couldn’t play in the midfield. It was good fun and I want to show I can play all three areas of the ground.”
Duggan’s performances for the Jets in the TAC Cup led to him being selected in the Vic Metro squad for the under-18 national championships.
“We started training back in February and have been training every week.
“We had our first game a couple of weeks ago against Vic Country.
I
had a discussion with my mum recently about life, and how mine had panned out so far.
We spoke about how fortunate I am to have been dealt this hand. I still have to pinch myself occasionally that I’m playing football for the team I barracked so hard for growing up.
e conversation took me back to a moment that will forever be etched in my brain — the moment I became a Bulldogs player.
Leading into the 2008 dra , I was hopeful of being picked up. But it was unlikely to be the Bulldogs as I hadn’t had any discussions with them. On dra day, my family and I were huddled over a laptop, listening to a streaming service that my IT-obsessed brother had set up for us. I memorised my registration number, so that I would know a second or two before anyone else if I was dra ed. Player number 208223 was read out, and by the Western Bulldogs. In an instant, the dream I’m now living had begun. I o en think about my dad’s reaction. It was understated, but I could tell just how proud he was, having played in the red, white and blue in 1974. Dad was a reliable ruckman before being struck down by a serious knee injury a er 13 reserves games. He loved the club – he still does –and I get a feeling his teammates liked him, too. People tell me he was dependable on and off the field, as he has been as a father and mentor. Not long a er my number was read out our phone rang. It was Daniel Giansiracusa. Gia congratulated me and said he looked forward to catching up at the club. at call meant a lot.
Football has its associated pressures and setbacks, but a er six years at the kennel, I still believe that I’m the luckiest Bulldogs supporter I know.

‘‘I played on a wing and thought I matched it with them.
“To play at that standard, it means you get to test yourself against the best.”
Duggan missed last weekend’s game against Western Australia in Perth, with coaches giving him the week off a er a hectic start to the season that included a trip to Europe with the Australian Institute of Sport.
“It [the AIS trip] was one of the best things I’ve done – to travel overseas with your best
mates and learn from legends of the game,’’ he said.
“ e biggest thing is what you learn off-field on the trip. e coaches give you advice on professionalism and how to make it at the top level.”
Duggan hopes to take the field for the next national championship game, but he’s also focused on leading the Jets to the finals and helping his Ballarat school, St Patricks, win the schools shield.
A remarkable 51 goals from Kate ompson li ed VU Western Lightning to a 27-goal win against Geelong Cougars in the Victorian Netball League last week. VUwentintotheround-17matchatthe State Netball and Hockey Centre needing a win to keep its finals hopes alive.
With the pressure on, ompson came through, scoring her goals from just 55 attemptsasLightningwon68-41. Shewas well supported by goal attack Sophie Barr, who netted 17 goals.
VU co-coach Robyne Dawson was delighted with her team.
“Not only did we have to win but we had to win well,” she said. “ e girls did a goodjobconsideringweplayedGeelong three weeks ago and won by a goal.”
VU was strengthened by the return of star defender and club captain Brooke ompson a er finger surgery.
“Brookestartedasgoalkeeper,”Dawson said. “But we had an injury, so she went back to her favoured position [goal defence] and was great driving through the centre court.”

■ The headline read: “I’m gay and I play footy. What’s the big deal?” It was a recent article in The Age written by Rhyian Anderson-Morley, who plays in the WRFL for the Yarraville Seddon Eagles. People have asked me what I thought of the article as I have been involved in the league for many years. For me, the headline says it all. What’s the big deal? I consider it a non-issue, and judging by the little reaction I’ve seen to it, so do most people. Was it brave of Rhyian to go public? Probably. Was it necessary? In my opinion, probably not. He wrote that some of his teammates had already asked him about his sexual orientation and he was honest in his answer. To me, that means everyone already knew before he addressed the group. No one sits on that sort of information in a club; it spreads like wild re.
Is homophobia alive and well in football? Of course it is, because football is a part of society and brings together people from different professions, backgrounds, religions, socio-economic groups – you name it. Football still has racist issues, especially at suburban level where the ethnic diversity of the participants is even more concentrated.
The question Rhyian asks at the end of his article is interesting: is football ready for an openly gay player? We have had one in Jason Ball for a number of years, playing in the amateurs, and there has been nothing but support for him. Homosexuality is not an issue in female sports so why is it portrayed as the elephant in the men’s locker room? Is it sponsorship and the effect it might have on the mighty sports dollar? Probably, but I feel that public opinion and the media attention would make any sponsor think long and hard about withdrawing sponsorship. I hope Rhyian is the last footballer who feels the need to stand in front of his teammates and talk about his sexual preference. Let’s get on with the game.
■ Braybrook Football Club celebrates its 140th year this Sunday with a big day at Pennell Reserve. Favourite sons Georgie Bissett, John Lloyd and Ray Walker will return for this day of celebrating one of the greatest local footy clubs.

Werribee will go into this week’s crunch game against Essendon with an eye on taking back its place in the Victorian Football League’s top four.
e Tigers enjoyed a hot start to the season before a loss to Williamstown on Sunday dropped them to sixth on the ladder.
Werribee (5-3) will look to bounce back in what is traditionally one of its biggest home games.
e Tigers host the Bombers at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday, with the senior match beginning at 1pm. Essendon (3-5) is in 12th spot, needing a win to stay in touch with the top eight.
For the Tigers, last week’s clash against Williamstown didn’t go to plan with the Seagulls claiming a nine-point win.
Bothteamswentintothegameinoutstanding form, but it was Werribee that made the most of its early chances.
First-quarter goals to Ben Brown, Ben Warren, Kieran Harper and Jye Bolton allowed the Tigers to open up an eight-point lead by quarter-time.
e Seagulls weren’t without their chances in front of the big sticks and were le to rue a
wasteful two goals from eight scoring shots. at inaccuracy continued during the second term, with Werribee able to stay in front despite having just three scoring shots to Williamstown’s six.
e shackles were far from li ed a er half-time, with majors still at a premium.
But in front of their home fans, it was the Williamstown players who were able to nd another gear.
Having trailed by a point at three-quartertime, the Seagulls hit the lead early in the nal term following a good passage of play from Jack Dorgan, which allowed Nicholas Sing to mark and goal.
It gave the Seagulls the lead, and the margin was soon extended a er Ed Carr was able to rove a ball in the pocket and snap truly.
Werribee wasn’t about to give up without a ght and it cut the eight-point margin to just two points with a goal to Jason Robinson.
It was Williamstown that came out on top a er former Tiger Scott Clouston kicked a goal against his old team to seal the 9.20 (74) to 9.11 (65) win. For Werribee, on a day when goals were hard to come by, Warren worked hard and nished with three majors.

Given the player turnover pre season, do you feel the team is now starting to play the type of football you hoped for?
Our turn-over was around 50% which is a massive number and something we would like to change for 2015 and beyond. We have had 4 good wins in a row since our last defeat against Port Melbourne, and the Development team has had 3 wins and a draw in that time. Each of the senior wins have been very positive with merit in different areas, and likewise the Dev. Squad. So yes we are playing the type of football we want them to play. Have you had to make changes to the game plan since the start of the season?
Not changes as such, just small adjustments and more and more education . I feel my job is never finished in that regard, the game continues to throw up scenarios, and players continue to need assistance and guidance about what they should be doing. Our recent draw in the Development Squad is a great example. We had a 20 point buffer, but allowed it to slip, because players under pressure made poor decisions, not skill errors, decisions linked to what they should do when, in a certain situation.
The second half of the season turns the heat up a notch, what is your number one focus right now?
It is a lot about training performance and the appetite to keep improving. Each team in the competition is getting better, so you need to keep pace with that.
I believe that if you have good training performance, then the games form a natural extension of that. Training performance is reflective of attitude, so we are trying to ensure everyone is getting the best out of themselves.

While it doesn’t share the excitement of it’s GTi sibling, the Volkswagen Golf 90TSI Comfortline is the perfect car for city diving. It’s well put together and brimming with technology, providing safety, comfort and remarkable fuel efficiency, even for a small car.
ere’s not much it does doesn’t have – from 360-degree parking sensors and low-pressure tyre indicator to a driver fatigue warning system that can recognise if your driving is getting erratic and beeps to wake you up.
e interior is smartly presented and uncluttered, with no cheap-looking plastic to be seen. ere’s also no handbrake lever – in its place is a much smaller switch that controls the electro-mechanical parking brake.
e dashboard and steering wheel are a mass of lights and switches, though there’s nothing confusing about the layout.
e5.8-inch“compositionmedia”touchscreen typifies the Golf’s usability. It displays radio, MP3 player and phone functions, park assist and real-time information about the car’s performance.Bluetoothconnectivityisflawless.
Park assist expands on reverse assist, with sensors around the car. While the camera only shows the reverse view, a graphic of the car appears with a series of distance markers that start flashing, along with an audible sonar-like warning, if you’re close to any objects. It’s handy for obstacles below window height such as bollards, high curbs or all the crap strewn about my garage.

VOLKSWAGEN GOLF 90TSI COMFORTLINE
So what’s it go like? It has a 1.4 litre engine that won’t break speed records, but doesn’t struggle either. It cruises nicely on 100km/h, and if you want to get there faster the 7-speed automatic transmission has a semi-manual mode, which gives this car some zing.
take your foot off the brake. Incredibly, it will let you do about 850kms between fuel stops. is isn’t the cheapest hatchback on the market, but it’s a class above the pack.
It’s incredibly fuel efficient too, helped by the start/stop system which turns the engine off when at a standstill and starts again when you
