Jobs bid gets cool response

Wyndham looks set to remain mostly blue-collar a er both the state government and opposition refused to commit to a move that would create hundreds of white-collar jobs in the area.

In an exclusive interview with Star Weekly, opposition leader Daniel Andrews said that if he was elected he would not move a government department to the East Werribee Employment Precinct, as Steve Bracks had done with the TAC in Geelong and Denis Napthine did with VicRoads in Ballarat.

“I know there are some people who wouldbeverystronglysupportiveofthat, but it does cost significant amounts,” Mr Andrews said.

“I would say to you that an ambulance, when you call for one, a hospitalbedwhenyouneedone, getting the asbestos out of our schools, building up our health system – those sorts of things, plus public transport, are a bit more important to me.”

East Werribee has been touted as a possible site for the creation of more than 50,000 jobs.

Advocacygroupshave been calling for a government department to be moved to the area to kick-start the process.

But Mr Andrews said he would instead focus on the automotive industry. “ e western suburbs have

had a pretty tough time of recent years withFord,HoldenandespeciallyToyota going,” he said.

“ ere’s a big job of work for us to do to make sure that tens of thousands of local families have got a job in the auto supply chain. I don’t want to give up on auto and I don’t want to give up on blue-collar manufacturing jobs”.

Asked specifically if the Napthine government would commit to moving a government department to the western suburbs, Planning Minister Matthew Guy chose to avoid the question.

“ e government has committed $66.5 million for a package of early works at East Werribee, which includes a full diamond interchange with the Princes Freeway, upgrades to Sneydes Road and key intersection upgrades along the Princes Highway,” Mr Guy said.

“ e government will continue to reinvest proceeds from the development of the site into the early delivery of key infrastructure.”

Wyndham mayor Bob Fairclough said the comments were disappointing.

“We have and will continue to advocate for the move of government departments to the municipality,” he said. “Most of the successful outer suburban employment precincts in Australia have a significant government services presence, and we would like to see the same commitment.”

Mad Hatters Biggest Morning Teas were held at the school’s primary and secondary campuses. Organised by the school’s coffee and chat parents group, the morning teas raised $1477. Community arts liaison manager Teresa Damjenic says the event “was an outstanding school community effort”.

Robberies, assaults double

Robberies have doubled and assaults risen sharply in Wyndham, while the number of the s from houses and cars declined, the latest police figures reveal.

Statistics released by Victoria Police show that overall crime in Wyndham rose by 2.8 per cent over the 12 months to March this year, while statewide crime rose by 7.1 per cent. e largest increase in Wyndham was in

robberies, which rose by 50 per cent with 102 offences recorded.

Assaults, excluding family violence, increased by 48 per cent, with 842 cases, and overallassaultsjumpedby30.8percentto1466.

In contrast, residential burglaries fell by 34.2 per cent to 999 and drug offences fell by 20.7 per cent to 456.

Wyndham police’s Inspector Damien Christensen said his officers were working hard to lower the amount of crime against the

person. “Crime goes up and down at different times of the year and we’re reviewing some of our procedures,” Inspector Christensen said.

“Assaults have increased and information based on intelligence has identified many assaults that have occurred between people known, but not related, to each other and an increase in assaults on police and Protective Services Officers (PSOs) in the execution of their duty.

“We also record and manage all reported

Speedy start to friendship

An 18-month-old female cheetah, Kulinda, arrivedatthezoolatelastmonth from Monarto Zoo in South Australia. She will spend 30 days in quarantine before making her public debut.

ZoogeneralmanagerRusselTrahersaid while Kulinda would share facilities with the zoo’s elderly male cheetah Inkosana, the pair would remain in separate areas to replicate the natural social structure in the wild, where females are solitary unless they are raising cubs.

“A er the loss of his brother Kaidi last year, the nearby presence of Kulinda will be comforting for our elderly male Inkosana, while providing our new arrival with her own territory,” Mr Traher said. “We were fortunate Kulinda had reached an age where she was ready to leave the family group and needed her own space.”

Keepers said Kulinda had been confident and relaxed as she explored her new surroundings.

She is one of 17 cubs born at Monarto since its breeding program began in 2003. ere are an estimated 10,000 cheetahs in the wild, all of them being classed as vulnerable.

assaults occurring within Port Phillip Prison. A lot of the robberies are low-level things like someone having their phone pinched, but we’ve also seen an increase in the figures because there’s been an increase in our levels of apprehension.”

But Mr Christensen said the same logic could not be applied to explain why there had been a drop in residential burglaries. “ ere is definitely less of them happening. We never, ever take our eye off the ball there.”

Urban growth hitting food supply

Researchers are warning that Melburnians will be forced to source fresh produce from country and interstate growers unless the state government acts to preserve farmland on the urban fringe.

e Deakin University-based Food Alliance, which is funded by VicHealth, found that close to half of Victoria’s vegetables are grown on land within 100 kilometres of the city in fringe suburbs including Wyndham and Casey.

e alliance also found that food production on Melbourne’s urban fringe was valued at $1.3 billion to $1.6 billion a year and generated more than 6000 jobs.

Research fellow Rachel Carey said WerribeeSouthwasparticularlyimportant to Melbourne’s food production, with growers specialising in numerous types of vegetables.

e suburb’s market gardens produce 85percentofthestate’scauliflowersupply, 53 per cent of the broccoli and 34 per cent of lettuce.

Overall, Werribee South farmers grow 10 per cent of the state’s vegetables.

“[Werribee South’s] proximity to the city, markets and secure sources of recycled water make it so strategically important,” Dr Carey said. “It is important to our food supply.”

Dr Carey said preliminary research carried out last year found some of Melbourne’s most highly fertile land was close to housing developments and in danger of being lost.

e Food Alliance is calling for the government to create a permanent urban growth boundary to preserve farmland into the future.

Wyndham rolls out work for dole

Unemployed young people living in Wyndham will be among the first in the country required to take part in a new work-for-the-dole program.

Last week, federal Assistant Employment Minister Luke Hartsuyker announced that young job seekers in the Westgate region, which includes Wyndham, Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay, would be required to take part in the program from July 1.

e program will be rolled out in 17 other locations across the nation, including Geelong,

Goulburn Valley and ‘Peninsula’ in south-east Melbourne.

People aged 18 to 30 who live in the 18 regions, who have been unemployed for 12 months or more and are receiving Newstart or Youth Allowance will be required to work for the dole, working 15 hours a week for six months.

Participants will be placed with local councils, federal and state agencies and with not-for-profit and religious organisations.

Jon Dight was named as the club’s interim chief executive a er Ross Kendell announced his resignation last month.

Star Weekly revealed that Kendell would be leaving Werribee to focus on setting up his own business.

DightsaidlastweekKendellhadsinceagreed to stay on as manager of the international quarantine centre, which is run as part of the club.

Dight, who will retain his post as chief executive of the Kyneton and Hanging Rock Racing Club, said that he would hold the top Werribee position for three months and focus on making the club more connected with the Wyndham community.

“All race clubs have got their challenges,” he said. “Werribee has had its fair share of bad

luck and hasn’t been able to put on consistent meetings.

“We just need to concentrate on making sure [the track] is ready to go for the next meeting and that it’s ready for the Werribee Cup in November.”

Dight said he expected a full-time chief executive would be appointed in time for the Werribee Cup on November 20 and that he would remain at the club in an advisory role.

“We’ve doneextensive work on the track with binding agents and it has held its profile really well,” he said. “We just need a little bit of luck to ensure that everything goes as planned.”

income support payments. Mr Hartsuyker said work for the dole would help young job seekers gain the skills and experience they need to secure a job.

“Work for the dole provides participants with the chance to demonstrate many of the skills and behaviours that employers look for in candidates, such as commitment, teamwork and punctuality,” he said.

“ e Australian government believes that all Australians who are capable of working should be working, ideally for a wage, but if not, for the dole.”

e program has been welcomed by job agency Matchworks, which operates in Wyndham and Geelong.

General manager Michael Wasley said work for the dole would expose job seekers to new industries and teach them new skills, making them more attractive to employers.

“I think employers would value the skills learntaspartofthework-for-the-doleprogram.

“Employers are not necessarily looking for someone who knows how to do the job right now but someone who will have the right attitude to do their best.”

Suburb bid wins support

e Manor Lakes Residents Association has hailed a council decision that will bring Manor Lakes one step closer to being recognised as a suburb, saying it had the potential to end “years of confusion”.

As reported by Star Weekly, the council voted last week to write to the Office of Geographic Names seeking an exemption to state guidelines which prevent the estate from becoming a suburb.

e guidelines prevent suburbs from being named a er businesses or commercial entities. Manor Lakes is a registered trademark of the Dennis Family Corporation.

e request also goes against the council’s own naming policy.

MLRA president Cedric Young said the council’s decision was in keeping with the wishes of residents.

A survey of Manor Lakes residents carried out by the residents’ association last February found that 90 per cent of people believed Manor Lakes should be its own suburb and not a part of Wyndham Vale.

“Everyone already calls it Manor Lakes anyway and it gets confusing,” Mr Young said.

“If you say to people that you live in Wyndham Vale, they ask where because it is such a big suburb. But when you say Manor Lakes, people know where that is.

“All the VicRoads signs say Manor Lakes. When we have visitors we tell them to follow the three signs for Manor Lakes once they leave Werribee.”

Critics of the proposal say that granting the exemption will encourage other estates to follow suit. But Mr Young said he did not expect that would happen.

“For example, Sanctuary Lakes is nowhere

near the size of Manor Lakes so I don’t think they would ask to change from Point Cook.”

Council chief executive Kerry ompson said while council officers had recommended that Manor Lakes remain part of Wyndham Vale,

the council recognised that there were benefits to the new suburb being created. She said changing the suburb would create a separate identity for residents and represented historic connections to the area.

Crashes claim two lives

Two people have died following collisions on Truganina roads in the past week.

A boy, 10, died in the Royal Children’s Hospital on Sunday after suffering serious injuries in an accident on Hopkins Road on May 27.

Ian Bouch, 46, of Tarneit, has been charged with negligently causing serious injury, dangerous driving causing serious injury and conduct endangering life as a result of the incident.

He faced Melbourne Magistrates Court last Thursday and was bailed to return to court in August.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

The boy’s death follows that of a woman, who is yet to be identified, in an accident on Dohertys Road about 2.30pm on Saturday.

Witnesses told police a Ford Falcon travelling along Dohertys Road and a Hyundai collided near Niton Drive, Truganina.

The female driver of the Hyundai died at the scene.

The Ford driver, a Brookefield man, 27, was not injured and is assisting police with inquiries.

The deaths take the state’s road toll to 109 for the year.

Hillier laments the passing of the age of innocence

here have been several incidents recently at our local schools involving young children being approached by both male and female adults in an inappropriate way. I am really pleased to report that on each occasion the schools have acted swi ly, and in the best interests of the child, the parents and the entire school community.

I cannot comprehend the type of person who perpetrates this kind of act. I also can never fathom why they seem to happen in clusters. It makes no sense when it is clearly not the act of a single person.

e age of innocence is long gone. While that is sad, it is a fact and we have to school our childrentobewaryofthestrangerdangermore than ever before. I find this very upsetting. I would love my son to be able to kick a footy in the street like I used to do. I would love for him to be able to go on his own to the milk bar on the corner like I used to as a kid. Walking to and from school now is an issue, as one of these incidents took place with a lone walker.

I am hearing about increased security at schools, and I understand and appreciate that it is totally necessary, and as a parent, I want it. is is not just a western suburbs thing, it is happening across the city. How sad that this is where we are as a society. What do you think?

Parking is a double-edged sword in our city. e Plaza at the moment is a nightmare due to redevelopment and there are ongoing problems at all our train stations, plus the CBD has always been a giant headache. e ripple effect these all have is getting worse and leading to some very aggressive attitudes in car parks. Finding a park is hard enough, but some of the driving displayed to claim the spot has to be seen to be believed. I have been sent several photos recently of cars parked at angles that bear no resemblance to the clearly marked lines. When you consider that some modern cars actually park themselves, and many have rear cameras, it makes you wonder why we

Truganina speed hump bid fails Residents of a Truganina street have lost their bid to have speed humps installed. Wyndham council rejected a petition signed by 11 residents of Locksley Drive who were concerned about speeding vehicles in their street. The council said that the speed and volume of traffic did not warrant the installation of speed humps.

Evrah Drive development approved Plans by a Hoppers Crossing developer for two double-storey houses to be built at 39 Evrah Drive were approved by Wyndham council. Two previous applicants for four double-storey dwellings on the site were knocked back by the council, which felt the application was an over-development of the site.

A report commissioned by advocacy group LeadWesthasrevealedstudentsinthewesthave among the state’s worst levels of disengagement from education, with Brimbank, Wyndham and Melton the hardest- hit areas.

e Education and Engagement in Melbourne’sWest report found that 2686 young people aged 10 to 14 were not in education at the time of the 2011 census, while 57 per cent of young people aged between 15 to 19 were not in any education, employment or training.

According to the report:

Comics add colour to life

With a nickname reminiscent of a cartoon character, it’s no wonder Werribee’s Jose “Pepe” Bascunan spends his days sketching cartoons.

Over the years, Mr Bascunan has dedicated his time to developing his signature cartoon character – a kangaroo wearing a cork hat and overalls.

e character, along with his beloved dog, wife, daughter and son, spend their time visiting community events and discussing local news.

Before moving to Werribee about four months ago, Mr Bascunan had his comic strips published in the ShoalhavenandNowraNews, a weekly community newspaper published in NewSouthWales.Hesaiddrawingthekangaroo wasawaytokeepupwithwhatwashappeningin the community.

“One thing’s for sure: the outcomes of somebodywhohasgonethroughthe13yearsof schooling are so much better than for someone who hasn’t.” Mr Rowley said LeadWest would use the study to advocate for more funding for Local Learning and Employment Networks, which broker partnerships in the community to support improved education and transition outcomesforyoungpeople, includingincreasing year 12 or equivalent attainment rates.

Tough talk

Clearly, being “nice” to the state government is a waste of time for Wyndham council and the Committee For Wyndham (re: Insults fly over advocacy goals, Star Weekly, May 28). Good on the committee for getting tough with them and speaking the truth! The time for sucking up is long gone! If Andrew Elsbury [Liberal MP for Western Metropolitan Region] thinks the few crumbs we have been thrown are good enough, then he is not listening to the residents he represents and not doing his job. Instead, he is toeing the party line and agreeing with their vote-buying actions in marginal areas! Shame.

Pride in our suburb Manor Lakes exists; it has a heartbeat. Our children attend Manor Lakes College. Every Saturday they proudly pull on the Manor Lakes Storm footy jumper and play cricket in summer for the Manor Lakes Cricket Club. Manor Lakes Basketball Club, Manor Lakes netball – the list grows, as does the community spirit.

This is not a trademark, this is our home. Governments worldwide spend billions of dollars every year to create community spirit. To create living environments where the people are engaged and proud of their neighbourhood. Here is an example of a

group of residents with a common goal to create a place that their kids will proudly call home. Why would any forward-thinking person not see the huge benefits society gains from encouraging and growing this spirit? I for one applaud Wyndham council for its vision and wish more elected representatives listened and shared with the people. To let bureaucratic red tape stamp out community when the world is lacking pride seems narrow-minded.

East West Link

Opposition leader Daniel Andrews has made his contempt for the people of Melbourne’s west very clear by pledging to block construction of the western stage of the East West Link. If he gets his way, the west will never get a second river crossing. Apparently those travelling between the western suburbs and the city will just have to endure more congestion and delays under a Labor government. It has been well documented that the West Gate Bridge carries more than 165,000 vehicles a day, a figure expected to rise to 235,000 a day by 2031. Mr Andrews asserts that his so-called West

Gate distributor will solve the problem by taking 5000 trucks a day off the bridge. This is nonsense. Removing less than 3 per cent of traffic off the bridge will solve nothing.

His recent scorn for motorists in Melbourne’s west is all the more extraordinary given that he has long spruiked a second crossing starting from the western side of Melbourne. Labor cannot be trusted. It does not care about the west and has no plan to deal with the problem of traffic congestion.

Bernie Finn, Western Metropolitan Liberal MP

Westlink a money burner Labor has a short memory – back in 2010 it was Labor that originally proposed the Westlink tollway, a proposal that today they attack the Liberal government on. Western suburbs people remember and can see through the hypocrisy.

In 2010, the Greens, together with the community, opposed Labor’s proposed tollway. I held 11 community meetings and thousands of community members joined my campaign. The Westlink tollway is not value for money; it won’t address traffic congestion and will burn money needed for investment in public transport and other essential services such as health.

Wyndham councillors claimed more than $28,000 in expenses between October 2013 and April this year. Councillors spent $4000 on mobile phone use, while $3000 was spent attending functions and events. Councillors spent a total of $76,798 between October 2012 and September last year.

Vegie habit takes root

Young people in Wyndham are sprouting green thumbs and getting into growing their own vegetables at the Youth Resource Centre. A pop-up herb and vegetable garden installed at the Hoppers Crossing centre has become so popular that the council has decided to make it a permanent feature. The garden was installed by Healthy Together Wyndham and Shoestring Gardening to support the Jamie’s Ministry of Food mobile kitchen, which was based at the centre for the past 10 weeks. Mayor Bob Fairclough (pictured) said centre staff would be trained in how to maintain the garden. “They’ll pass on that knowledge to the young people attending the Youth Resource Centre,” he said. “With more than half of Wyndham’s adult population overweight or obese, these are very important skills for community health.”

• The program that encouraged universities to enrol low SES students, resulting in a 32% increase in low SES students from Lalor attending university.

• The apprenticeship programs like the Access Program that has helped 50 locals secure an apprenticeship, the Tools for our Trade program and the Apprenticeship Incentives Program benefitting over 6,000 apprentices in Lalor.

• Youth Connections assisting youth at risk to reconnect to education and training, leading to work opportunities.

people of Lalor this budget carries no good news.

฀฀฀฀•฀ Will the apprenticeship be complete if the work dries up because people can’t afford home improvements?

฀฀฀฀•฀ Will the cuts in people’s incomes see a reduction in local retail spending?

This budget clearly shows that the young adults in Lalor and their futures are not a priority for the Abbott Government. They will be impacted by the changes to Youth Allowance and Newstart, by the changes to university funding, by cutting Youth Connections, apprenticeship and employment support programs.

I have seen firsthand the impact of well-targeted support for young people and how it can change lives. Now it seems it is left to our community to support our youth. Think about shopping local, use local tradespeople and if employing look locally.

Council denies landfill allegation

Wyndham council has rejected claims that it misled the community about the true value of the Wests Road landfill in the municipality’s budget.

e Western Region Environment Centre has accused the council of leading residents to believe that the Werribee tip added close to $30 million a year to the council’s coffers.

WREC director Harry van Moorst said councillors and staff had stated that the tip earned $29.3 million in 2012-13, but had not clarified whether the figure was before or a er operating costs had been deducted.

Mr van Moorst said the landfill’s profits were $14.8 million in 2012-13.

“We have been fed some very misleading statements about the supposed profits that the tip makes,” he said.

Appeal aims to ease pain for terminally ill

Martin Kaltner has seen first hand the difference Mercy Health’s “urgent need appeal” can make to the life of a terminally ill patient.

As a palliative care nurse at Werribee Mercy Hospital, Mr Kaltner spends his day caring for people who are terminally ill.

His role is to ensure patients are as comfortable as possible by helping them deal with their pain. But he’s also on hand to provide advice to their carers and loved ones.

e urgent need appeal raises money for families who are struggling to make ends meet while caring for sick loved ones.

“It’s extremely difficult for patients and their families once they are told about a terminal illness,” Mr Kaltner said. “ e patient may have a long or short time to live

and they still need to be able to pay the bills … it’s nice to know there is a safety net for people.”

e annual Mercy Health Foundation ball, to be held at the Plaza Ballroom in Melbourne on June 14, will help raise money for the appeal.

Mercy Health is hoping to raise $2 million.

Mr Kaltner said working as a palliative care nurse was a confronting job, but he couldn’t see himself doing anything else.

“Ifocusonsymptoms, contributingfactors and how we can relieve them,” he said. “It’s very hands on, but the reward of being able to help someone in pain is amazing.”

To donate to the appeal, phone 8416 7766.

But the council insists it never misled the public. Chief executive Kerry ompson said the $29.3 million figure was revenue from external tipping fees, before operating costs.

“ e figure of $14.8 million is the estimated profit … this is the total amount of revenue a er expenses such as operating costs.”

Mr van Moorst maintained the council should have been clearer about the tip’s actual profits. “We know that the income is

much higher than the profits. But like other businesses, they should have made it clear what the actual profit was,” he said.

“What they have been saying is the income benefit to the community was $29.3 million per year.

‘‘Technically, itmaybetrue, becauseitearned that much. But the actual figures show the profit is less and so [the] benefit to the community is less.”

Making sew many gains

A Werribee man who had a stroke has turned a seemingly simple rehabilitation treatment into his life’s passion.

David Dumesny started to lose most of his hand-eye co-ordination a er a mild stroke in 1996.

His doctor recommended that he try sewing with a needle and thread as a way to heal his body.

Twenty years, and about 100 masterpieces later, Mr Dumesny is a proli c cross-stitcher.

“I thought I’d try anything, because at the time I was trying to pick things up and I was missing them,” Mr Dumesny says.

“It was very scary because I was only 42 when I had the stroke. I was worried that I’d be unable to keep working.”

Mr Dumesny says he can nish a small artwork in one weekend, while larger pieces can take up to a year to complete.

“I started doing lots of little ones and they just got bigger and bigger,” he says.

“I like the fact that I can start with a blank piece of material and then nish up with something that’s pretty detailed.

“I just stitch anything that appeals to me and whatever I can nd a pattern for.”

Mr Dumesny, who has pieces hanging at Werribee RSL, has given away more than 90 per cent of his creations as gi s.

He’s only made a duplicate of a piece once and says he doesn’t think he could ever turn his passion for stitching into a business.

“I want to be able to do it at my own leisure and whenever I feel like it,” he says.

According to the National Stroke Foundation, one in every six people will have a stroke in their lifetime. For more details, visit strokefoundation.com.au.

Axed workers share lotto win

Sixteen workers at Altona’s doomed Toyota plant won $15 million in last Tuesday night’s Oz Lotto draw.

Syndicate members, aged in their early-30s to mid-50s, will each receive more than $937,000 from the division 1 jackpot.

About2500workersattheAltonaplant last week voted on a redundancy package for when they lose their jobs in 2017.

One winner said his workmates thought he was playing a prank when he told them they had won.

“When I called everyone … they thought I was just joking around, but I said, ‘I wouldn’t be ringing you this late to play games – we’ve won Oz Lotto!’

“We’re all planning to do things like pay o the mortgage and take a holiday.”

Another winner said he wouldn’t quit his job but would use the money for his retirementandpayo hisson’smortgage.

“I’m pretty conscientious … I’ll continue to work now that I’ve won, but down the track this prize money will be like a retirement bonus for me.’’

Toyota spokeswoman Beck Angel said the news was very exciting. “ at said, they are wanting to keep their identities under wrap, so [there’s] not much I can say except that we are thrilled for them.”

e $30 million jackpot was shared with a couple from the Gold Coast.

Wyndham tightens pokies policy

New poker machines will be banned from Wyndham shopping centres a er the council adopted a policy to tighten restrictions on the location of gaming venues.

e plan, which was endorsed by a state government planning panel in March, was designed by the council to address problem gambling in the city.

Councillors formally adopted the policy at their monthly meeting on May 26 and have written to Planning Minister Matthew

Guy asking for it to be included in Wyndham’s planning scheme.

Once the plan is included in the planning scheme, electronic gaming would be discouraged in areas of high socioeconomic disadvantage or high levels of housing stress.

New machines will be viewed more kindly if they are planned for areas where there’s a choice of recreational and entertainment options other than pokies.

e council said it was necessary to limit the areas where poker machines could be located because an alarming number of machines

for horses

Australia’s best cross-country horse riders will take on the most promising rising talents in Werribee this weekend as they vie for a piece of a $50,000 prize pool.

e Melbourne International Horse Trials will be held at the International Equestrian Centre in Werribee during the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

More than 160 riders, including Australia’s highest-ranked competitor, Olympian Shane Rose, will attempt to conquer jumps up to 1.2 metres tall in the shadows of the Werribee Mansion.

e man behind the jumps, course designer Ewan Kellett, says it has taken 10 people about three weeks to get all the obstacles in place.

e largest and most daunting jump is

known as the “ha-ha wall”, which includes a deep trench as an added intimidation factor.

“It’s a very visual fence,” Mr Kellett said. “It’s about making the most of the ground and the conditions that you’ve got to work with and using them to your advantage.”

He said that while the jumps may look scary to humans, the horses taking part in the competition see something quite different.

“ e horses that do this are trained to do it and they love it,” he said.

“ ere’s no way you could make a horse do it if they didn’t love it; the weight and physics are just too much in the horses’ favour.”

continued to be approved by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal and the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation.

Wyndham punters lost almost $250,000 a day on local pokies in 2013. e state electorate of Tarneit has 548 machines, while Altona has 561 machines, 345 of which are in Wyndham.

Cr Glenn Goodfellow said the policy would help the council tackleproblem gamblingwhile still allowing gaming machines to be installed in the city.

“It gives us clear guidance on how we deal

with electronic gaming applications as they come up,” he said.

e plan has been welcomed by HealthWest, with project co-ordinator James Dunne saying it was among the best ways councils could tackle problem gambling.

“Keeping gambling venues away from areas where people are likely to be more vulnerable is a positive step in reducing gambling-related harm,” he said. “Removing pokies from where people live and go about their lives is likely to reduce the impact of problem gambling on the Wyndham community.”

Regal approach to safety

Speeding drivers in Melbourne’s west have been put on notice as police launch a major operation to target dangerous road users during the coming Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

Senior Sergeant Ross Burbidge, the road policing advisor for Brimbank and Melton, says Operation Regal will be conducted from Friday, June 6, to Monday, June 9.

“Large volumes of tra c are expected on our major freeways and highways, particularly on Friday and Monday,” Mr Burbidge said.

“Police will be focusing on excessive speeding, alcohol and drug-impaired driving, mobile phones, seat belts and fatigue, which are main contributing factors for fatal and serious-injury collisions.”

Chairman of the RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council, Jim Giddings, said speeding increased both the risk

of being involved in a crash and the severity of injuries sustained.

“Speeding and inappropriate travel speeds directly contribute to at least 30 per cent of deaths on Victoria’s roads each year.”

Mr Giddings said the work of his group, along with initiatives like Operation Regal, would hopefully reduce the number of serious crashes on western suburbs roads.

“It’shopedthecampaignwillseeanincreased awareness of the consequences of speeding, which, coupled with enforcement measures targeting the minority of drivers who put all road users at risk, [will make] our roads safer.”

e Victorian Community Road Safety Partnership Program has provided funding to support RoadSafe Westgate in addressing local road safety issues throughout the west.

RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council is a road safety advocacy group that implements road safety programs and is supported by the municipalities of Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton and Wyndham.

Fears for stolen dog

e the of an American bulldog from Brooklyn and three attempted dog the s in Spotswood, reported on social media last week, have reinforced fears that pets are being taken from Melbourne’s west by a dog- ghting ring.

Hobsons Bay Inspector Richard Paterson said police were not aware of these cases but were investigating the the s of a sta ordshire cross and two maltese shih-tzu from Laverton in April and an attempted dog the in the same suburb last week.

Brooklyn man Joshua Munn is devastated a er his American bulldog, Tiny, was stolen on May 19.

“I wake up in tears every morning, he was my only family,” he said.

Mr Munn said he was at work when his dog disappeared but his next door neighbour witnessed Tiny being taken.

“He [Tiny] was seen sitting on the corner of Millers Road and Cypress Avenue, which is my street.

“Apparently, a blue 4WD came around the corner and a girl with a broken arm got out of the car. My dog, Tiny, started walking back up the road towards my house.

“ e guy in the car was yelling ‘grab it and get in’, and without him realising, he’s pulled up in my driveway and then she coaxed [Tiny] over towards the car. en they’ve driven away.

“My next door neighbour witnessed all of this but didn’t think to get the registration because she thought it was me.

“He has most likely been stolen for dog ghting. Apparently, Ballarat is one of the mecca points for the ghts.”

Early Wednesday morning, two men were allegedly caught in a Spotswood backyard trying to put a rope around a dog’s neck.

A post from a Spotswood resident on the Facebook Paws and Tails page and shared on the Missing Animals Hobsons Bay page states:

“I woke up at around 2.45am to the sound of dogs and the neighbour’s dogs violently barking. I went outside to check on my pets and there was a male intruder in my backyard holding my dog by the neck with a rope.

“As he jumped my gate to escape, I ran out

the front to get my neighbour’s help and we witnessed two males eeing down my street.”

A black sta ordshire terrier and maltese shih-tzu cross were baited and stolen from a Werribee home on March 27. eir bodies were later found.

Anyone with information about Tiny can call 0412248599. Anyone with information for police can call Crime Stoppers on 1800333000.

Security staff pay warning

Local councils could be setting themselves up for legal stoushes with security workers by signing low-cost contracts.

e Fair Work Ombudsman issued a warning to councils last week a er the security industry raised concerns that competition was driving down the cost of tender bids.

Fair Work Ombudsman Natalie James said councils should ensure that cheap contracts were not resulting in security rms underpaying their employees.

“If a council is buying in security services at a price that doesn’t allow the contractor to pay an average of $24 an hour, then there is a real possibility the employee is being underpaid,” she said. Ms James said her o ce would be working with the Australian Security Industry Association (ASIAL) and unions to launch an education campaign aimed at councils. “We want to be sure low-cost contracts are the result of e cient business practices rather than underpayment of employee entitlements,” she said.

ASIAL chief executive Bryan de Caires said the security industry was competitive and the awareness campaign would bene t security service providers who were playing by the rules. “We must ensure companies complying with workplace laws are not disadvantaged,” Mr de Caires said. Sally tops zoo’s who’s who

Wyndham’s rst Business Person of the Year, Werribee Open Range Zoo director Sally Lewis, started her career as a safari guide at the zoo when she was in her early 20s. Even then she thought she would have the top job one day. “When I left for another job, I kept all my African wildlife books and I always thought I’d be back,” Ms Lewis recalls. Last year she was named the inaugural Business Person of the Year in the Wyndham Business Awards. And last week she signed a contract that will keep her in the zoo’s top job for another ve years. With nominations for this year’s business awards closing on June 27, Ms Lewis says she’s interested to see who wins. “For me, it’s not about whether they run a big or small business; it’s more about someone who can drive success through their team.” More details at: www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/business/2014awards. SALLY LEWIS

We’ll rebuild the west: Andrews

A common sentiment we hear from residents is that Labor had 11 years to solve many of the issues facing the west and instead it let a lot of them fester and become much worse. Why should residents give Labor another chance?

Well, the fact of the matter is that in so many of the key and fundamental areas the basics that define our quality of life and define our standard of living … things are worse today than they were three and a half years ago.

Whether it’s ambulance response times, hospitalemergencydepartments, surgerywaiting lists, unemployment, youth unemployment, the number of new jobs that are being created, the number of TAFE courses that are available for kids of working people across Melbourne’s West, roads, public transport, in all of those areas things are not better. ings are worse and getting worse because we’ve got a government and Premier that just don’t get the right priorities.

You touched briefly on TAFE there. It’s obviously a big issue and we’ve got Victoria University as our major university in the west, so will you guarantee to reverse the situation there and increase funding to TAFE?

We made a commitment two years ago that we would put this right and we’re going to repair as much of the damage as we possibly can. Not damage done by Labor… damage done by Liberals who, if they cared about the

kids of working people, wouldn’t cut TAFE, and yet they have. [A total of] $1.2 billion gone, coursesgone, staffsacked, campusesclosedand fees skyrocketing, even for the courses that are le . ere’s so much more money that needs to be paid out in order to enrol in those courses.

We’re going to have more announcements. We’ve made an announcement in the broad sense; it’s called a statement of intent, if you like. ere’ll be more detail including the costing, the funding and the exact detail of where money will go well before Victorians vote. We understand how important this is and at a time when you’ve got 20 per cent youth unemployment, cutting TAFE’s no answer. e west desperately needs a second river crossing, so why are you opposing the East West Link, and what’s the alternative?

Well, I think what the west needs and what every community needs is a government that will be honest with it. What we’ve got at the moment is Denis Napthine, who’s done nothing for three and a half years and suddenly is going to do everything simultaneously…

What I’m going to do is treat the people of the west with some respect. We’re going to get on and we’re going to get thousands of trucks off the Westgate every day. en we’re going to get on and properly plan … Melbourne Metro should deliver extra stations servicing the west but they’re cut out of Denis Napthine’s botched transport scheme. at’s what it is, a botched transport scheme; a station at Fishermans Bend and he can’t tell you where, no stations in the north and the west of the city, no additional support for the growing western suburbs.

You’ve put out a plan to remove 50 of the worst level crossings in Melbourne. Which ones do you think would be the first to go?

We need to be careful to get expert advice on this. ere’s a list. e RACV and the national safety regulator have got a list or data. ere’s evidence of how many accidents, how many tragedies have occurred and we’ll be guided by that.

Residents have been calling for the Caroline Springs police station to be opened for 24 hours a day. Is that something you will deliver?

[Labor MP for Kororoit] Marlene Kairouz has spoken to me about this a number of times. I understand the issue well and our commitment to the people of Caroline Springs is that we will talk to Victoria Police

about this and talk to the local community. We’ll try to expand those services as much as we can a er we’ve had those discussions.

So you can’t commit to anything at this stage? No, but we will have the discussion with the community and with Victoria Police and we will always look to try and expand the services there.

Steve Bracks moved the TAC to Geelong, Denis Napthine moved VicRoads to Ballarat. With the planned East Werribee Employment Precinct, obviously there is a need for whitecollar jobs. Will you commit to moving any government departments to that area?

In terms of employment and my number one priority, the western suburbs have had a pretty tough time of recent years with Ford, Holden and especially Toyota going. ere’s a big job of work for us to do to make sure that tens of thousands of local families have got a job in the auto supply chain. I don’t want to give up on auto and I don’t want to give up on blue-collar manufacturing jobs.

Moving jobs from one part of the city to another, I know there are some people who would be very strongly supportive of that, but it does cost signi cant amounts.

And I would say to you that an ambulance when you call for one, a hospital bed when you need one, getting the asbestos out of our schools, building up our health system … those sorts of things plus public transport are a bit more important to me.

It does cost quite a lot of money to move an agency from one part of the city to another.

I know there is strong support for this, but it’s about priorities and it’s about choices and you can’t do everything.

So we shouldn’t be holding our breath to see any government departments move west?

No, but you can be assured that a Labor government will work hard every day to see

that we not only build a strong future for those jobs that are at risk at the moment – for instance the auto components sector – but a Labor government will work hard every day to create new employment opportunities and it doesn’t have to simply be moving jobs from one part of the city to another.

Will you support or reject the proposal by Boral to expand the Melton tip?

I don’t think the council has brought the local community along on this issue. I don’t think the process has been very strong. I don’t think there’s community acceptance of this particular facility so we have very signi cant doubts about this, and we don’t support the project because that process has been poor and the community is not supporting it.

You’ve criticised the Napthine government over plans to remove frontline police. Can you guarantee the west will have more frontline police under Labor and will you commit to bringing down crime levels in the west?

I’ll tell you what I know. e back o ce is not the frontline. It’s as simple as that.

If you promise more frontline police then you better not hide them away in a back o ce on a “taskforce”.

Frontline policing is about a visible police presence, deterring crime, ghting crime and keeping communities safe. at’s what frontline policing is all about. Hiding people away, or even this other issue of ‘we need forensic accountants and CSI-type lab technicians’ – they’re not frontline police. ey’re important, of course. Taskforces, homicide squads, drug squads… of course they’re all important.

But to be building up specialist teams at the expense of constables on the street, on the beat, in local communities providing a presence, deterrence and doing good old-fashioned community policing, that’s not what was promised by this government and it’s not what communities want.

Art in everyday life

An Altona artist has drawn inspiration from the western suburbs’ urban landscape, painting everything from petrochemical tanks to garage doors.

Je Ferris, who grew up in Williamstown, said he felt lucky to have been born and raised in the west. He nds a wealth of material in the “empty wastelands” of suburbs like Laverton, Point Cook and Tullamarine, and even nds beauty in pollution in the sky.

If he had to choose a favourite landmark, it would be Newport power station.

“When you grew up in Williamstown, and Newport, the powerhouse was always prominent on wash days,” Ferris said.

“You’d have to tell your mum when all the smoke came billowing out of the thing.’’

Ferris said many of his works focused on

the everyday – things like letterboxes, garage doors, neat gardens and rubbish bins.

“I’ve always got most of my images around the western suburbs and the image of the garage door has been a recurring theme. It’s just a typical western suburbs-type image.

“ ere’s a lot of nice stark images, too, in that industrial environment. I always look for the shadows, the play of light on objects.”

Images in his latest exhibition include Wilson Street, Yarraville and a cricket match at Williamstown’s Grey Reserve.

Ferris is exhibiting at Bridget McDonnell Gallery in Carlton until this Saturday. For more details, visit www.bridgetmcdonnellgallery. com.au.

Commuters slam train claims

Public Transport Minister Terry Mulder has told State Parliament there has been “fantastic improvement” to train services on the Altona Loop section of the Werribee line, raising the ire of commuters who have complained to Metro, Public Transport Victoria and the Ombudsman about their experiences.

Mr Mulder lauded the bene ts of people travelling through zones 1 and 2 being able to travel on a zone 1 fare from next year.

In a reference to Tarneit Labor MP Tim Pallas, Mr Mulder cited “Tim from Tarneit” who “knows that punctuality on the Werribee line has risen from 75.2 per cent in April 2010 to 90.6 per cent in April 2014”.

Mr Mulder, in a reference to opposition MP Jill Hennessy, then gave the example of “another prominent individual from Altona” who “arrives home at Williams Landing”.

“ ey pay $12.12 for a daily commute, and they will save around $5 a day from January 2015,’’ Mr Mulder said.

‘‘When that person arrives home at Williams Landing station, they are greeted by protective services o cers on the platform before connecting with one of 2120 bus services around Point Cook that have been introduced by the Coalition.

“On board the train they hear that Altona Loop bypasses have fallen from 1004 in 2010 to 320 in 2013, a fantastic improvement in that part of the metropolitan area. ey also get the opportunity to enjoy one of 181 extra weekly train services on the Werribee line.”

But Altona Loop Group spokeswoman Jennifer Williams said there would be no bene t for Altona commuters next year.

“Altona is a zone 1 or zone 2 station depending on which direction you travel,” she said. “Altona residents pay zone 1 to travel to the city already. If travelling to zone 2 from Altona, you only pay zone 2 fares.

‘‘ Altona Loop customers have not bene ted at all ’’ - Kate Witton

“ e minister failed to mention the many times Altona Loop passengers were dumped at Newport station because trains were running late. e bypasses may have reduced, at the expense of being dumped and waiting atleastanother22minutesforthenextLaverton service.’’AltonacommuterKateWittonlabelled Mr Mulder’s comments “ridiculous” and said “last week, again, Altona Loop trains were dumped at Newport”.

“At Newport, we had the entire 5.14pm service jump on our train and it was completely packed,’’ Ms Witton said.

“Altona Loop customers have not bene ted at all because we are constantly disregarded as soon as something goes wrong or is delayed on the Werribee service.’’

Ms Hennessy said people were “sick of being kidnapped … taken without pre-warning before they board, beyond their intended destination and made to nd their way back.”

Growth pains on the way

Wyndham will bear the bunt of Victoria’s future growth, with the state government predicting the municipality’s population will surge by more than 150,000 people by 2031.

e government’s Victoria in Future report, released last week, reveals the state’s population will swell to 7.7 million people in the next 17 years, rising to 10 million in 2051.

Wyndham is forecast to be the fastestgrowing local government area by 2031, with its population extending from 200,426 people this year to 367,495.

Melton is predicted to add another 126,828 people, while Whittlesea’s population will grow by 131,842.

Planning Minister Matthew Guy said the state’s population growth was a “natural population increase”, a result of more children being born and longer life expectancy.

He said the new projections helped the government plan.

“Having up-to-date projections allows us to best manage growth and plan for the housing, infrastructure and services that will be needed 30 to 40 years down the line,” Mr Guy said.

Wyndham mayor Bob Fairclough said while the population projections were not a surprise, the council was concerned about the government’s willingness to fund necessary infrastructure and create local jobs.

“Wyndham also needs a continuing focus on development of the East Werribee employment precinct to generate local jobs necessary to

support this population boom,” Cr Fairclough said.

“Improvement and expansions to health and education facilities, road and public transport infrastructure and services need to be made as part of the annual state government budget process year in, year out without exception.” e Victoria in Future report predicts the number of households in Wyndham will rise to 128,826 by 2013, up from 57,655.

e average household size will be 2.83 people, slightly above the state average of 2.47 people.

‘‘ Improvements … need to be made … year in, year out ’’

- Bob Fairclough

Mr Guy said the projections con rmed that families considered Victoria to be a great place to live and raise children.

Across the state, the number of babies born is expected to reach close to 120,000 a year by 2051.

“Since the early 1970s, our fertility rate has been falling and the number of children born every year has remained virtually unchanged. But now that’s turned around, with twice as many babies expected to be born in 2050 than in 2000,” Mr Guy said.

Statewide, life expectancy for those born in 2051 is predicted to rise to 87.6 for males and 89.9 for females.

Synthetic dope attack ‘bizarre’

An Altona man has been sentenced to do 200 hours unpaid work in two years a er pleading guilty to attacking the mother of his two children with a sword a er using synthetic cannabis.

A psychiatric report tendered in the County Court stated the defendant spent six days in the Sunshine Hospital psychiatric unit, prior to o ending, but had little formal psychiatric history.

In a report to the court, consultant psychiatrist Lester Walton said it was highly likely the defendant was in the grip of an acute paranoid psychosis at the time of o ending.

Addressing the defendant, Judge James Montgomery said he agreed with Mr Walton that drug and alcohol rehabilitation was a high priority and noted that the defendant had gained employment and had good prospects of rehabilitation.

e court heard the defendant had prior convictions for drugs and assault and had been sentenced to three-and-half years’ jail for unlawful assault.

e court also heard that the man had two young children with the woman he assaulted, who has resumed living with him.

Judge Montgomery said general deterrence was an important sentencing consideration in the case. “General deterrence means the community expects the courts to send a message to men not to attack women, and if they do, they will su er serious consequences,” he said.

“I am on record, in similar cases of men attacking women, in expressing my abhorrence ofthistypeofbehaviour, andIdosoagain.Your behaviour here was dangerous and appalling. You could easily have killed [the victim] in the state you were in.”

e victim gave evidence the defendant had used synthetic cannabis before, but it had not previously a ected him as it did when he o ended.

‘‘ Your behaviour here was dangerous and appalling ’’
-JudgeMontgomery

Judge Montgomery said: “I nd that your moral culpability is reduced by reason of this psychotic state, as there is no evidence that you had an awareness that your use of synthetic cannabis might trigger a psychotic reaction. Your behaviour here was bizarre and inexplicable. [ e victim] spoke in a positive term of a family relationship. She is con dent you will not reo end. She appeared to me to be a level-headed, realistic and sensible person, fully aware of the consequences of her decision to rejoin you. She did not seem to me to be blindly supporting you.”

Judge Montgomery said even though the defendant’s actions were “dangerous and appalling”,hehadbeenassessedashavingalow risk of reo ending. e defendant was ordered to undergo mental health and drug treatment, including testing for drugs and alcohol.

Not the retiring type

One of Wyndham’s newest residents, Kris Moller, fell in love with Australia in 1983, having sailed from his home in South Africa to the shores of Fremantle.

ree years later, he became an Australian citizen.

“I felt I couldn’t live in a racially divided country any more,” he says of his decision not to live in apartheid South Africa. His career in IT took him around the world. In 1990 he moved to Indonesia, where he met his wife, Ervina.

“I asked her out and she gave me an address and said meet me at 9am,” he said.

“SoImetherandwecaughtacabandarrived at a church. I asked her, ‘Is this where you want to go?’ And she said, ‘I just wanted to see if you would follow me’.”

He has been following her ever since. It was Ervina Moller who fell in love with the Wyndhamarea.Shelovedhoweasyitwastoget around and identi ed with the area culturally. e couple moved to the region four months ago and are building a house in Truganina.

“She said, ‘Get out of IT and start preparing for retirement’,” Mr Moller said.

So he wrote a book, Over 65 And Still In Demand, which promotes retirement as the start of something new.

At 69 years of age, he’s looking forward to writing more books and exploring Victoria with his wife.

Good books stand the test of time

Four years ago last month, our fledgling bookstore was cementing its business plan on the back of a dead Swedish journalist’s crime novels.

The final in Stieg Larsson’s Millennium series – The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets’ Nest – was published in Australia in early 2010. Only a couple of months earlier, The Guardian had described it as “a grown-up novel for grown-up readers who want something more than a quick fix and a car chase. And it’s why the Millennium trilogy is rightly a publishing phenomenon all over the world”.

The new books arrived, we sold them, ordered more, sold them, too. By May 2010, more than 40 million copies of the Millennium books had sold worldwide. The figure is now more than 70 million and continues to grow.

It’s interesting to reflect on which novels we were selling then, and which of those remain relevant, important and continue to engage readers.

One example is Hilary Mantel’s Man Booker prize-winner Wolf Hall. The first in a three-part series based on the life of Thomas Cromwell and the court of HenryVIII, the novel remains one of our favourite recommendations to readers seeking “a big, meaty read’’.

It is big in size and ambition, but Wolf

Wyndham’s Draft Biodiversity Policy

With input from the community and key stakeholders, Council has developed its draft Biodiversity Policy that will assist with delivering a more integrated approach to biodiversity conservation and education in a fast growing municipality and changing environment. The policy will support and provide direction for Council’s planning, decision making and operations as well as provide support to the Wyndham community’s vision of preserving local biodiversity.

To further advance the development of the policy, Council encourages the community to provide feedback and comments on this strategic document by Friday 4 July 2014. The draft policy along with how to submit comments can be found at: www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/environment/environmentsustainability/strategiesplans

Hall and its sequel, Bring Up The Bodies (which, in 2012, also won the Man Booker) have rightly earned their places on the list of brilliant historical fiction. (The final instalment of Mantel’s Cromwell series is due this year.)

Looking back, there were some real gems among those new-release fiction boxes. We

‘‘ It is big in size and ambition ’’ -CorriePerkin

still delight in introducing readers to the work of British writer Howard Jacobson through his sharp and hilarious The Finkler Question

Jacobson won the 2010 Booker for this, beatingthe bookies’ favourite, Dublin-born Emma Donoghue’s Room – another fine novelbooksellersaroundtheworldcontinue to push.

Meanwhile, The New York Times declared that“JonathanFranzen’snewnovel Freedom, like his previous one, The Corrections, is a masterpiece of American fiction’’.

We agree, and his penetrating study of the Berglund family’s decline is another one that will surely stand time’s test.

It was also the year we discovered a new

author, Helen Simonson, through her gentle lovestory Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand. This storyofanunexpectedfriendshipbetweena retiredformerarmymajorandthePakistani ownerofthelocalmilkbarprovedahitwith book clubs globally.

Peter Temple’s Truth won most of the country’s 2010 literary awards and continues to be a go-to book for booksellers. Meanwhile, other Miles Franklin shortand long-listed novels from that year, such as Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey, Lovesong by Alex Miller and The Book of Emmett by debutante fiction writer Deborah Forster, still resonate powerfully with readers.

Independent bookstores, in particular, heartily backed Sydney writer Fiona McGregor’s Indelible Ink, which quietly charmed readers with the story of a 59-year-old northern suburbs Sydney divorcee who finds her life forever altered when, on a drunken whim, she gets a tattoo.

Geordie Williamson, in his review for The Monthly, wrote: “Beyond the domestic drama of Indelible Ink – its tough, yet tender, appreciation of family dynamics, its revelation of character as an endless war of contradictory impulses fought within a single, human frame – McGregor has set out to exhaustively catalogue Sydney in all its guises.’’

No wonder this very fine Australian novel, four years later, still connects with its audience.

MECHANIC

When it comes to Australian pinot noir, three wine regions stand tall: the Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula and Tasmania. With Mornington and the Yarra just up the road, we’re lucky their wines are so accessible. Tasmania, on the other hand, feels like the nal frontier for pinot noir.

A quick browse of a wine list in Hobart or a shop inLauncestoncanfeellikeawalkthroughAladdin’s cave for a pinot lover, with unknown wines at every turn.

Atthemomentthereareabout160wineproducers in Tasmania, but only 60 or so send wines to the mainland. Demand for local wine in Tasmania is so strong that many producers don’t need to send the wines over Bass Strait. ere’s the odd occasion when a pinot will make it onto a single Melbourne restaurant’s wine list because the sommelier is a friend of the winemaker or has helped out at the winery during the vintage harvest.

All the big wine companies want a pinot noir in their portfolio from the state that produces just 0.5 per cent of Australia’s wine. From big corporates such as Accolade Wines (Bay of Fires and Arras) and Treasury Wine Estates (Heemskerk and Abel’s Tempest) to family-owned producers such as Brown Brothers (Devil’s Corner) and Shaw + Smith (Tolpuddle), they all have a foot in the door.

Pinotnoiristhestate’smostwidelyplantedgrape, but there’s not all that much pinot to go around –just 5000 tonnes of pinot noir grapes were picked in 2013. A large proportion of that went into sparkling wine production.

To put this volume into perspective, there are

isle

wineries in the Barossa and Riverina that can process more than Tasmania’s annual pinot noir crop in a day. Despite all the interest from mainland producers, there hasn’t been a huge investment in wine infrastructure and many large producers ship grapes to the mainland to be processed at their wineries. Others ferment and crush their grapes on the island and ship the juice to their wineries to nish the maturation process.

So why does everyone want a piece of Tasmania’s pinot noir pie? Tasmania is considered a marginal climate for growing grapes and its cool days mean grapes take a long time to ripen. Extra time on the vines helps them develop deeper avours while retaining acid levels.

Many Tasmanian wineries harvest their pinot into May, while most mainland pinot-producing regions have their wines fermented and tucked away for a rest in oak barrels by then. e further south you go, vineyards tend to be planted on sheltered or north-facing sites that give them enough sunlight to ripen. Still, it’s not guaranteed the grapes will ripen properly.

Tracking down Tassie pinot noir

You don’t need to visit Tasmania to track down its elusive pinot noir. Buy direct from the wineries or check out the Pinot Shop, run by Michele Round. Round regularly secures allocations of pinot from Tasmania’s smallest and most sought-a er pinot noir producers. Based in Launceston, Pinot Shop has a range of mixed pinot cases and ships to the mainland for $14 a case.

PINOT VINES IN TASMANIA

Tigers save best for last

Werribee Districts confirmed its status as one ofthetopteamsintheWesternRegionFootball League with a 32-point win against Spotswood on Saturday.

In what was clearly the division 1 match of the round, the second-placed Tigers hosted the third-placed Woodsmen, with a potential home final on the line later in the season.

Despite being less experienced in crunch WRFL matches, Werribee Districts got off to the better start, booting three goals in the opening quarter to take a 12-point lead by the first break.

Both teams controlled periods of the second and third terms, with Werribee stretching its lead to 15 points, only for it to be cut to five going into the last quarter.

With the match on the line, the home side went on to produce some of its best football in the final term, kicking seven goals to seal a 15.12 (102) to 10.10 (70) win.

Werribee Districts coach Wade Chapman said it was his side’s best win this season.

“We were playing against a quality club that has been the yardstick of the competition for the last 15 years,’’ he said.

“ e under-18s had a win, the reserves had a win and so did the seniors, so it was a great day for the club.”

Christopher Molivas and Ryan Harrington were outstanding on the Werribee forward line and finished with four goals each.

For Spotswood, Jason Cloke was the go-to target, kicking four goals.

e win gives the Tigers some breathing room in outright second on the ladder.

e Tigers are now six points clear of the third-placed Woodsmen.

Werribee Districts will meet competition strugglers Yarraville-Seddon when round nine begins on June 14.

Spotswood will take on sixth-placed Sunshine.

“Playing Yarraville at Yarraville will be tough,” Chapman said.

“As I said to the guys, if you don’t bring the correct mindset on the day, any team can win.”

In other division 1 results at the weekend, Deer Park defeated Altona, Hoppers Crossing smashed Yarraville, St Albans got over the top of Port Melbourne and Sunshine was too good for Albion.

Jets peter out as Falcons take flight

e Western Jets suffered their first loss in the TAC Cup since round three, going down to the Geelong Falcons by 16 points at Werribee’s Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday.

Both sides were in control of the play for prolonged periods in the first half as the momentumandtheleadchangedseveraltimes.

A burst of three late goals put the Jets on top going into the main break and handed them an 11-point lead.

Despite giving up the first goal a er half-time, the Jets looked the stronger team and began to take charge. A combination of precision kicking and hard tackling inside their attacking 50 helped them extend their lead to four goals.

But as three-quarter time approached, the Falcons hit back hard.

Geelong won a number of crucial centre clearances and made the most of its forays forward to cut the lead to just five points at the final break.

From there, the Falcons carried the momentum through the final term, kicking five goals to seal a 17.8 (110) to 14.10 (94) win.

WesternJetscoachTorinBakersaidthegame was a good learning experience for his side.

“It was a good clash.

“[But] When we did get behind, we didn’t challenge the opposition and we didn’t find a way to put the pressure back on them.

“A er the game I just spoke to the boys about some of the things we can do when we are behind,” Baker said.

“It was a bit of a learning experience for our players.”

Leigh Spiteri worked hard for the Jets to be among his club’s best players.

Spiteri competed well up forward and finished the match with three goals.

Baker also praised the work of his captain Liam McMahon who continued his great form with another impressive game on the backline.

Western will have an extra week to regroup from the loss with no TAC Cup football being playedovertheQueensBirthdaylongweekend. eJetsnextclashwillbeinround10against the Eastern Ranges at Box Hill City Oval.

e match is already shaping up as a blockbuster with both teams currently in the top four.

Ԃ Last Saturday the 88.9 WYN FM caravan made its debut at Soldiers Reserve for the WRFL match of the day between Werribee Districts and Spotswood. Everything I love about local footy was on display, including cars parked around the ground and about 1000 spectators with team colours proudly displayed. There were kids playing on the swings and slides, people on the ground having a kick in the breaks, the smell of sausages cooking and good-natured banter between supporters. And there was the game. It was a great contest from start to finish. There were people who questioned whether Werribee Districts should come straight into WRFL division 1, and that was fair enough. Now the team is second on the ladder, six points clear of third. It is a good side that is well coached and has good facilities and behind-the-scenes support. The radio caravan’s first visit to Soldiers won’t be the last.

Ԃ Braybrook Football Club will celebrate its 140th year on Sunday, June 15, at its home at Pennell Reserve in Braybrook. The Brooker have a proud and rich history. Actually rich might not be applicable, but proud certainly is. They have four players in the Bulldogs Team of the Century, and boast more than 50 players who have gone on to play VFL\AFL footy. Anniversary details: Contact Suellen at braybrooksportingclub@hotmail.com or call Frank Smith on 0415 032 075.

Ԃ Williamstown CYMS Amateurs will hold their past players day and premiership reunions on Saturday, August 3, at Ferron Reserve. Bernie Tuck is the man with all the details –0422 700 057 or btuck@albright.com. au. Werribee Masters Football Club will hold its ladies’ day in conjunction with the past players day on Sunday, June 15, from 1.30pm at Wyndhamvale North Reserve.

Ԃ The greatest rivalry in local football is on again this weekend when Werribee travels to Point Gellibrand to take on the Seagulls. They sit third and fourth on the VFL ladder, so it will be a fair-dinkum contest between two in-form sides. The rivalry is not hype – it goes from the presidents down. This is the only home-and-away game between the sides this season. That’s a pity and something I know both clubs are keen to see addressed.

Seagull Marcon aces it

e Victorian Football League was unable to topple the South Australian National Football League in the state representative game on Saturday.

With some of the best state-league players from around Australia on one ground, it was the travelling SANFL that led at the end of every quarter to claim a 22-point win: 18.10 (118) to 14.12 (96).

At Port Melbourne’s North Port Oval, things lookedgoodfortheVFLearlya erJulianRowe kicked the game’s first goal.

However, the SANFL players weren’t about to let the home side get out to any big leads and Tim McIntyre responded with two goals of his own. e sides traded goals for the rest of the quarter, with South Australia hanging on to a five-point advantage.

e second term followed a similar narrative to the first, with SANFL hitting the scoreboard early, thanks to back-to-back goals from Michael Wundke, only to be reeled in late by the VFL.

e momentum swings continued as the teams controlled portions of the match. South Australia looked the likely winner with a 20-point lead late in the third, only for the VFL to launch a spirited fightback.

e home team booted six of the next seven goals to take an 11-point lead.

But the burst of outstanding play only spurred the SANFL to li again, its players launching one final assault, kicking six of the last seven goals to seal the win.

Williamstown’s Adam Marcon was named best on ground for the Victorians.

Marcon was exceptional in the midfield and finished the game with 29 possessions. He was well supported by Footscray’s Nick Lower, who had 32 disposals, while Port Melbourne’s Chris Cain was also impressive.

VFL football resumes this week with FootscraytakingonFrankston, whileWerribee will travel to Williamstown for the local derby.

Falcons extend winning streak

City West Falcons proved too good in a top-of-the-table Victorian Netball League clash last Wednesday.

e ladder-leading Falcons beat secondplaced Boroondara Genesis by eight goals at the State Netball and Hockey Centre.

In a match where both teams rested several key players, City West took control early and built a four-goal lead by quarter-time.

With Kath Knott continuing her outstanding form in goals, the Falcons charged away through the next two quarters, the margin growing to 10 by the final break.

A minor ankle injury to Knott, which led to her being rested for the fourth quarter, slowed City West’s progress and allowed Genesis to fight back in the last term.

Boroondara won the quarter by two goals, but it wasn’t enough to topple the Falcons, who won 51-43.

City West coach Marg Lind said it was a hard game to evaluate given both sides were missing key players.

Alice Teague-Neeld was out for the Falcons, while Melbourne Vixen Erin Hoare missed for Genesis.

“We were happy to come away with the win,” Lind said.

“At the same time, both sides didn’t have full line-ups. It’s hard to make a judgment on that performance.’’

Despite her injury, Knott still finished with a game-high 33 goals.

City West is four games clear at the top of the VNL ladder with a perfect 16-0 record. With just two games until the finals, the Falcons will need to beat seventh-placed Yarra Valley and third-placed Peninsula Waves to complete an undefeated home and away campaign.

Ask the Coach

You have been involved with Majak Daw’s development over the years at North Melbourne, what do you think of the recent criticism?

I find it very interesting and disappointing at the same time.

When he was on the North Melbourne Rookie list, Majak was the most talked about rookie in the history of the game. There was a lot of hype with his debut of course, and then he kicked a bag of goals against the Western Bulldogs last year. Is it just a part of the Australian sporting culture that absolute legends of the game, in Leigh Matthews and Wayne Carey, feel the need to comment on Majak’s game with such harshness?

Does this Sudanese born, late convert to our game just need to be cut down to size? Just another tall poppy?

The hype around Majak means he is going to come under increased scrutiny, that is part of the territory for him now.

But he has played less than 10 games at the top level, he has lots to learn and is definitely a work in progress.

Majak is a soft target . The Herald Sun article by Bruce Matthews with the headline of “Majak’s disappearing act” doesn’t really help anyone, nor meet any need in terms of informing the public of relevant information.

People forget that Majak had a PCL reconstruction late in 2013 and missed the VFL finals, which would have been of great benefit for his all round football knowledge . Instead, he had a late start to training and so he had another compromised pre-season. He has managed that very well and displayed enough good form in the VFL to return to the AFL team.

The likes of Leigh Matthews and Wayne Carey are entitled to their opinion. As a final point, I respect the philosophy of the Triple MMM football commentary team. They have their BOG votes and they also have their “not-so-good” votes, where they vote for the players “who didn’t get the job done” in the same 3-2-1 voting format.

But the Triple MMM rule is, no player who has played less than 50 senior AFL games is eligible for the “negative’ votes (Reminder, Majak played less than ten games). Those players turned commentators, have not forgotten how hard it is to play and establish yourself in AFL football. They do not see the need for harsh criticism for players who are just starting their careers.

Cup bid a capital idea

A er years of dominating its western suburbs competition, Point Cook Soccer Club’s under-12 boys side is heading to Canberra for its next challenge.

e junior team, which hasn’t lost a home and away game for three seasons, has entered the prestigious Kanga Cup.

e event is one of the largest junior soccer tournaments in Australia. is year’s version is played next month.

Point Cook under-12 coach Charlie Muscat is expecting tough competition.

“ is is a great opportunity to challenge the boys against really good opposition from around Australia,” he said.

“It will be a great learning experience for them. ey’re going to play some great opposition and learn what it’s all about to go away together as a team.

“It’s not like a normal week when your game is finished and everyone goes their separate ways. You play your game and then you go back to the hotel and have dinner together and bond.”

It isn’t just their regular-season form that will be giving opposition sides cause for concern.

e Jets also bring a wealth of tournament experience to the table, having won a number of events in recent seasons, including the Point Cook, Altona City and Keilor cups.

Muscat believes the side’s success comes down to a great work ethic.

“ ey’re all dedicated kids. ey come to training all the time. Very rarely do they miss a session.”

To help with the cost of sending the team to Canberra, the Point Cook Soccer Club is seeking sponsors in the local community. Contact team manager Antonietta Biondo at nbiondo@bigpond.net.au.

Netball

VU Western Lightning kept its Victorian Netball League finals hopes alive with a five-goal win against Peninsula Waves last Wednesday. Nothing could separate the two sides for most of the match, with both trading goals in the first half. After taking a one-goal lead into half-time, the Lightning was able to build some momentum in the third term, scoring 14 goals to extend the margin to seven. The Waves fought back in the last quarter, but the deficit proved too great and VU celebrated a 50-45 win. Lightning shooter Sophie Gunn finished with 37 goals. The Lightning is fifth on the VNL ladder but six points outside the top four. To qualify for the finals, VU must win its last two matches and the Southern Saints or Peninsula Waves must lose both their games.

Cycling

Footscray Cycling Club members headed to the Brisbane Ranges for round eight of the winter road season on Saturday. Racers battled over 80 kilometres across the dreaded Granite Road hills in dry, temperate and calm conditions. With no wind to speak of, A-grade road champion Dom Dudkiewicz eventually launched a demolition of the race. ‘‘When we started the climb towards Granite Road, Josh Zammit attacked and then Miles Da Costa surged, so I bumped it up a bit. When I crested the climb, I realised no one was behind me so I put my head down and did it solo to the end.” Craig Robertson finished second.

Flexibility makes for a sweet deal

It’s easy to fall in love with a car, but there are many obstacles that can keep it just out of your reach.

Sweethearts Car Sales and Rentals can help seal the deal with flexible finance and trade-in options.

The locally owned business has serviced the Werribee community for 14 years. Its staff offer a range of hassle-free options with friendly service.

Director Vince Mastroianni started the business in Swan Street, Richmond, after he and his wife took over a business called Sweetheart Car Rentals. The name stayed, but things definitely changed.

Mastroianni sold the Richmond premises in 2001, moving closer to home in Werribee and adding more than 40 cars to the fleet.

Fellow director John Merganovski, the former director of a Toyota dealership, brings 20 years of experience to his role.

A key value of Sweethearts Car Sales and Rentals is that everybody gets a chance to buy the vehicle of their choice, no matter their situation.

There are many aspects of the business, including car rentals and sales, short and long-term rental and a ‘‘rent to own’’ program.

This latter program combines the costs of financing and owning a car into weekly payments over a year. This includes insurance, warranty, registration and roadside assistance.

“We focus on tailoring a plan to individual needs and budgets,’’ Merganovski says. ‘‘In one case, a client was renting a car for over a year and we tailored a plan to switch her into a car that she would own.”

The service doesn’t stop once you walk off the lot. Sweethearts has a workshop in Werribee to ensure their cars and customers are looked after. Customers can also trade in vehicles including jet-skis, boats, caravans or motorcycles.

Sweethearts Car Sales and Rentals, at 23 Synnot Street, Werribee, opens weekdays, 8.30am5.30pm. Inquiries: 9741 0484 or www.sweetheartscarsales.com.

Putting the fun into function

Toyota’s homage to its old Land Cruiser FJ workhorse still turns heads with old-school looks that are echoed inside with square lines and chunky switches, making you feel like a kid who brought his Tonka truck to life.

e FJ Cruiser’s square windows, big dashboard and long, narrow windscreen provide a military-like presence that continues channelling those childhood dreams.

e spacious interior has a charm that’s o en lacking in high-end SUVs. It’s also practical, with water-repellent seats and rubber floor mats that can be hosed down.

e seating is comfortable and there’s plenty of room in the rear, which is accessed by backward-opening doors, one of the many features of this vehicle that elicit an audible ‘‘cool’’ when demonstrated. e only issue if you’re in the back is limited views through the small, airliner-style windows that don’t open.

ere’s plenty of storage space, including more cupholders in the centre console and doors than it holds passengers. e rear cargo area is station wagon-like and becomes a small van with the back seats folded down.

Entertainment and communication are via Toyota’s standard 6-inch radio/media/phone/ sat nav touchscreen, which looks a little small in this cockpit.

e FJ Cruiser’s ride is surprisingly smooth and gentle, despite the big tyres and suspension that’s designed to take a beating. I rarely drove this thing without a smile on my face.

e 4-litre V6 petrol engine pulls its bulk well and has similar economy to a V8 sedan.

Recommended price

$52,162 drive away

Techy stuff 4l V6 petrol engine, 200kw

Fuel consumption 11.4 l/100kms (official combined consumption)

Safety (Not Ancap tested) Has six airbags, traction control, stability control, brake assist.

A turbo diesel powerplant would be brilliant in this thing whose range is helped by the 72-litre fuel tank, with another 15 litres in reserve.

I’d happily have this as my daily drive, though it would be a travesty not to take it out bush regularly. is is a serious off-roader thanks to its basic design, which includes 224mm stock ground clearance and state-of-the-art technology that got me through some pretty rough terrain despite my limited four-wheel-driving experience.

e active-traction control (A-TRC) is a godsend. I got to test thus a er coming across a ravine out Blackwood way. I’m not sure what I would have done without A-TRC, which engages the limited slip diff and brakes to keep things steady underfoot while you concentrate on steering. It was scary and reassuring at the same time.

Driving through less extreme bush tracks was a doddle that demonstrated the mix of capability and enjoyment that encapsulate what the FJ Cruiser is about.
