A Wyndham councillor has warned that residents could be slugged with rate rises of up to 10 per cent if the council’s debt is raised to a record $55 million.
At a public meeting on Monday night, Heather Marcus was one of only two councillorstovoteagainstthedra budgetthat suggests borrowing another $15 million to help fund the capital works program, bringing the total amount borrowed to $55.06 million.

“We have never borrowed this amount of money ever before and this really concerns me,” Cr Marcus said. “I don’t want to put our people into a situation where, going down the track two to three years, we will have to put our rates up by 10 per cent to pay all these borrowings. We may need to borrow more each year. I’m sorry, but I’m not putting my ratepayers through this”.
But Wyndham corporate services director Steve Lambert said the council had secured a seven-year fixed interest rate for its $55 million
loan, meaning a rate increase of 10 per cent was not likely. Cr Marcus reiterated concerns raised by Cr Gautam Gupta, who said he did not see why rates should be raised by an average of 5.5 per cent when the CPI increase was only 2.75 per cent.
Cr Marie Brittan said the council could not afford to raise rates by any less than 5.5percent,andshedidnotthinkthesuggested increases in charges were too high.
“I think that once you own a house you know that there are ongoing costs,” she said. “We
have a hardship policy to support the people who are in genuine hardship.
“If we increased our rates by only CPI, as this council did for many years, we’d be getting further and further behind with your capital works.”
Cr Intaj Khan supported Cr Marcus by voting against the dra budget.

Tarneit MP Tim Pallas labelled the

Mercy Health chief executive Stephen Cornelissen said the hospital needed the funding to help it better care for one of Australia’s fastest-growing regions.
“We believe that without expansion in services, the local community and the hospital will face significant challenges moving forward,” he said.
Before the Star Weekly went to print, Health Minister David Davis did not respond to questions about why Werribee Mercy had been overlooked for funding.

Carlton Football Club has been refused a permit to extend the opening hours of its Club Laverton hotel to 3am.
Hobsons Bay’s deputy mayor Colleen Gates said extended opening hours would be inconsistent with the council’s planning policies, whose aims include the prevention of alcohol and gambling-related issues. She said people couldtravelashortdistancetoWyndham hotels, which had longer opening hours.
“ e Laverton club is situated between three very similar late-night venues: Westside Taverner in Laverton North, the Phoenix Hotel in Point Cook, and Sanctuary Lakes Hotel in Point Cook,” Cr Gates said. “If these venues operated according to current permits, residents could potentially have 24-hour access to alcohol and gambling.
“For example, if Club Laverton and only Westside Taverner opened according to their current permit hours, Club Laverton has a permit to open at 7am with a variable closing times, the latest being 1am on ursday-Saturday, and Westside Taverner is open from 11am-7am every day.
“In addition, the Phoenix Hotel is already operating between 7am and 1am every day and Sanctuary Lakes Hotel from 7am-1am ursday to Saturday and 10am-12am Sunday to Wednesday.”
Gamblers in Hobsons Bay lost $47.2million last calendar year, compared with $51million in 2012.
Millers Inn Hotel in Altona North, open until 5am, recorded the highest expenditure in Hobsons Bay last year, raking in $13.9million. Seagulls Nest at Newport, open until 3am, recorded the next highest at $7million. Club Laverton was third on the list with $5.7million.
CrGatessaidvenueswithlateropening hours had been allowed to keep them under old planning regulations, which had now changed. “ ere are variations in terms of what each permit allows in line with the relevant regulations and changing community attitudes towards alcohol and gaming,” she said.

Drug abuse is on the rise in Wyndham, with newfiguresshowingasharpriseindrug-related ambulance call-outs.
e latest figures from alcohol and drug centre Turning Point reveal that the number of call-outs across Wyndham for crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as “ice”, almost doubled from 2011-12 to 2012-13.
Paramedics were called to 28 ice cases in the municipality last financial year, up 47 per cent from 19 cases in 2011-12.
Turning Point researcher Belinda Lloyd is calling for a community-wide approach to tackle the rise in ice-related call-outs.
“Government, health agencies, law enforcement, community groups, businesses and local residents must come together to address these issues and discuss possible solutions,” she said.
Wyndham’s only full-time alcohol and drug treatment service, Stepping Up, warns that crystal meth use has become so widespread that middle-aged and successful residents are turning to the drug.

Dennis Family Corporation chief executive Peter Levinge revealed that Maor Lake –behindthesimilarlynamedManorLakesestate in Wyndham Vale – would be the subject of an overhaul.
“ is is another important milestone and further exciting news for the growing community at Manor Lakes,” Mr Levinge said.
“Manor Lake not only provides the source of the estate name, but also acts as the central point for connection to all present and future development within the Manor Lakes boundaries.
“ e various initiatives we plan to undertake in this project have been designed to capitalise on the lake reserve’s potential to take pride of place within the estate.”
A major part of the project will be the creation of a main park next to the lake and the
construction of a concrete path along the creek.
e other half of the redevelopment will be an extensive planting program involving about 20,000 new trees.
Mr Levinge said works had recently started and were expected to be completed before the end of this year.
“Our investment in this project will generate a significant natural asset for the whole Manor Lakes community,” he said. “ e planting program will attract further bird life and help provide a more sustainable ecology, while the new passive recreation areas will become a great attraction for local residents.”

e Danes will invade Werribee’s Park Hotel next week to celebrate all things beer.
To mark Good Beer Week, the pub is playing host to Danish breweries, allowing their beers to take over its taps for a week.
e pub will also host two five-course degustation dinners, pairing traditional Danish cooking with the beers.
Operations manager Joey Rowlings said the pub decided to base the week around a Danish invasion to give customers “something different”.
“Being a pub, we don’t have the facilities to brew our own beer so we decided to do
something different,” he said. “Denmark is in the same situation as Australia, where cra beer is just taking off.”
e pub has been planning for Good Beer Week for eight months, using an import company to help it choose the beers to bring to Australia. ree of the breweries involved in the week have never previously had their beers poured in Australia.
Places are still available for the degustation dinner on May 21.

Wyndham council plans to spend $108.79 milliononcapitalworksnextfinancialyear, but close to a third of the money will be spent on redeveloping two leisure centres.
e council has set aside $16.4 million for the Wyndham Leisure and Events Centre and $18 million for the Werribee Sports and Fitness Centre. Both redevelopments are already under way.
Close to $30 million will be spent on roads, with $2.49 million allocated for the reconstruction of Dohertys Road, between Fitzgerald Road and Alex Fraser Drive.
Other projects include the installation of energy-efficient globes in the municipality’s street lamps, at a cost of $2.5 million; a bridge overSkeletonCreek,Truganina($2.27million); and a library in Tarneit ($4.5 million).
Another $50,000 will be spent on a central Werribee car parking strategy, which will investigate the number of spaces available in the CBD, enforcement of time limits and effectiveness of parking fees.
Under the proposed budget, council fees and charges will rise by an average of 2.25 per cent. e municipal charge will increase $6.25 to $52.75, while garbage charges will rise by more than 3 per cent, to $259.
Cr Glenn Goodfellow said the proposed budget balanced demand for infrastructure and services with fiscal responsibility.

Mayor’s budget response was too so , writes Kevin Hillier
Safe is the word I would use to describe Bob Fairclough’s response to last week’s state budget, and I think we deserved more.
I believe we needed to rattle a few cages. Yes, the East West Link got funding. Yes, the RegionalRailLinkgotthego-ahead.Butbothof those are not specific western suburbs projects. We will have a new prep to year 9 school in Point Cook, and stage two of Truganina prep-9 is going ahead. Big deal.
Band-Aid solutions just don’t cut the mustard any more. It’s an election year, which makes it the perfect time to play hardball, and our mayor has missed the boat big time.
Take this quote as an example of the tone of the response: “ ere are specific projects requested by Wyndham City Council which don’tappeartohavebeenfundedinthisbudget, including duplication of Dohertys Road, Davis Creek Primary School and upgrades to Werribee Mercy Hospital.”
Either they have been funded or not, and to meekly address it in this way is not good enough for the ratepayers of Wyndham.
e tacit rebuking of the lack of specific funding for the East Werribee Employment Precinctwasalsoweak:“WyndhamCityhopes the state government will continue to invest new money into the development.”
Hope? Let’s just change the name of our city from Wyndham to Doormat and be done with it. Your thoughts are welcome.
Isn’t it always grand to see one of the major television channels lead the news with a story about our suburb. Last Saturday night, Channel 7 led with the hoons of Morris Road.
Not only did they have footage of the latenight burnouts at the Morris-Heaths roads intersection, but they had an interview with two blokes who claimed to be part of the group involved.
Well, I am sure their parents and friends would have been proud that they were on the television, justifying this totally unacceptable behaviour. I trust the local police take this to the next step. ey are not TV stars, they are

Residents of Wyndham believe they have no power, that is the problem. Every one of us can make a huge difference to the world around us. But as a united force, we really can stop Wyndham from dying this slow death by overpopulation and state government exploitation. So, who do we stand behind? Who will inspire us to stand united? Who will say no to all their political bull? Is there really a true leader out there? Michael Young, via web
Budget ‘snub’
The state government should be embarrassed by the total neglect and disdain continually shown to the residents of Wyndham. This is so blatantly obvious in the latest budget released last week. What is with all the prep to year 9 schools? Another spending shortfall! Where do our students complete their education to year 12, or are they not worthy?
And, please, no more housing. Instead, fix the dilapidated schools, fix the disgraceful roads, fix the woeful transport. Infrastructure first, infrastructure now.

e Kokoda Track is considered an extremely di cult walking challenge, but that didn’t stop two Wyndham students from tackling it head on.
Jaileigh Turner and Carlee Ferguson, of Hoppers Crossing Secondary College, were two of 17 students from across Wyndham who recently returned from walking the track.
About 10 months of training prepared them for the physical challenges of the 10-day trek, but nothing could prepare them for the mental challenges it presented.
Carlee said it took her ve days to discover the right approach.

“I realised I just had to keep my head down and not look at every hill or puddle that was coming next,” Carlee said.
“It’s crazy to think of how much I struggled compared to the people who did it during the war. I couldn’t imagine trying to do it if you were carrying ammo and being shot at.”
Jaileigh said she found that if she woke up with a positive attitude, the day of arduous walking would not be as di cult.
She said the experience had changed the way she looked at the world.
“It made me realise that to get through you need help from other people,” Jaileigh said.

e Napthine government has been accused of playing politics with the education of Wyndham students a er three schools that desperately need funding to x safety issues missed out in the state budget.
Tarneit Secondary College principal Michael Fawcett said he was still waiting on funding to nish the second stage of his school.
“ is is the third consecutive state budget that we’ve received absolutely nothing,” Mr Fawcett said.
“From my point of view, this was purely an election budget and because we are in a safe Labor seat we’ve been ignored.
‘‘ The parents of our students are extremely angry ’’ - Peter Devereux
“If we were a marginal seat, we probably would’ve got funding. I think that’s a clear example of playing politics with our kids’ education.”
Mr Fawcett said the school was only a third of the way to being completed and, as a result, some children in Tarneit would spend almost all their school lives learning out of portable classrooms.
TarneitP-9CollegeprincipalPeterDevereux, said that by the end of this year, up to 400 students at his school would be in portable classrooms.
“ e parents of our students are extremely angry that we’ve been overlooked again,” he said. “In reality, our kids will now spend another three to ve years in portables.

“ ese are barely satisfactory conditions … the real educational needs of our students are being usurped to win marginal seats.”
Werribee Secondary College missed out on funding despite being the rst school in Australia to submit an independent business case to the state government – in December, 2013 – requesting urgent funding of $7 million.
A spokesman for Education Minister Martin Dixon did not respond to allegations that schools in safe Coalition and marginal seats had been favored in the budget, but
rather blamed the situation on the previous Labor government.
“Labor’s so-called Victorian Schools Plan le us a $420 million school maintenance backlog, which we are now having to x,” the spokesman said.
“ ereareschoolswhosemaintenanceneeds are greater than the capital funding invested in them in over a decade of Labor.”
Money for a new Point Cook South Prep-9 school and $7 million for stage two of the Truganina P-9 was included in last week’s budget.

Heartmoves classes have been running in Wyndham since 2012 as part of the state and federal governments’ Healthy Together Wyndham program.
e city is one of 14 “at-risk” municipalities in Victoria taking part in the initiative.
AccordingtotheHeartFoundation, residents in Wyndham are 1.4 times more likely than the rest of Victoria to be hospitalised due to heart attack.
Between 2007-08 and 2011-12, there were five heart attacks for every 10,000 people in Wyndham, compared to two in the City of Melbourne and three each in Yarra and Port Phillip.
e classes provide people who have had strokes, havebeendiagnosedwithheartdisease or type 2 diabetes, are battling arthritis or who are overweight with a gentle exercise program to help keep them active. Classes are run at nine locations across Wyndham by specially trained instructors.

“Heartmoves isn’t a hard thing to do, but it’s something that gets you going and you do feel good when you’re finished,” Mr Clark said. “For anyone 60 and over, or people who’ve had a medical problem of some sort, it’s ideal.” A new Heartmoves class starts this month at Werribee’s Kelly Park Community Centre, with an information session on Friday at 9am. A program that has helped more than 6000 struggling Wyndham residents put food on the table in the past year is expected to run out of funding by the end of this month.

“ e impact of not having adequate income to meet basic living needs is enormous
Manor Lakes College students, including Zoe and Khloe (pictured), are doing their bit to help homeless people in Wyndham.
Fifteen of the school’s foundation Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning students are running a blanket drive as part of their studies. They’re urging the community to donate blankets to the school; they will then be passed on to Werribee’s Salvation Army, which will give them to homeless people in the local area. for individuals, couples or families,” Ms Moger said. “Social isolation and loneliness, depression, other health issues and family breakdown are becoming more common challenges for people battling poverty.”
Ms Moger said that in the past year, working on a budget of $192,525, WSH was able to support between 3700 and 4000 households or 6000 individuals.
But this could all end in a few short weeks.
“[We] are gravely concerned. Due to the increased demand on our service we estimate this funding will run out by the end of May
and our deficit will grow bigger and bigger,” she said.
“At this stage, no one knows how much funding will be received for the next year.”
e emergency relief program is paid for solely by the federal government.
A spokesman for the Department of Social Services said the government was spending $115 million to reinstate the National Partnership Agreement on Homelessness for service delivery for another year, to be matched by states and territories.
“ is significant investment will enable
critical homelessness initiatives to continue to support Australia’s most vulnerable people, providing much needed certainty for homelessness service providers,” the spokesman said.
“It will be up to the states and territories to allocate funding to homelessness service providers in 2014-15 under the agreement.
“All other funding decisions, such as emergency relief funding, will be made in the federal budget.

Werribee Plaza is undergoing a $370 million makeover that will include a change of name to Paci c Werribee.
Although there is currently a reduction in the number of car parks, the library’s operating hourswillremainthesameduringconstruction
works. As part of the redevelopment, the library will be relocated into a new building in early 2015.
Cr Heather Marcus said the works would be worth the wait.
“Once complete, the library will feature new and upgraded facilities, including a quiet study room – perfect for those seeking a peaceful place to do homework or prepare for exams,” Cr Marcus said.
“ e new library will be ideally located for young people, in the entertainment precinct at the new plaza on the rst level.
“ ese works will continue in the coming months … people should consider coming to the library during quieter times and be patient when looking for car parking.
“Patrons are also encouraged to visit one of our other branches in the Werribee City Centre, Wyndham Vale or Point Cook.”
Cr Marcus said residents would be kept up to date with any changes to the library’s hours through the council’s website and Facebook page.

A
fishing competition with a much bigger agenda than seeing who can catch the biggest fish will be held in Werribee this weekend.
Melbourne Water will host its annual Catch a Carp Day at Wyndham Park on Sunday, with prizes awarded for the biggest haul and the heaviest carp landed.
Waterwatch co-ordinator Richard Akers said while the free event was a way for families to have a fun day out, there was also an important environmental message.
“Carp are one of the many invasive species that are threatening our local waterways by competing with local species and muddying the water,” Mr Akers said.
“Catch a Carp Day helps to highlight those threats and teach the community more about them, while enjoying a bit of fishing.”
Mr Akers said the event was part of a range of river health activities Melbourne Water was undertaking along the Werribee River, including weed management, revegetation and environmental water releases.
“ ese activities will create better habitats for the fish, bugs and platypus that call the river home, and will also make it a nicer place for the community to enjoy,” he said.

Mr Akers said catching carp was just one way in which people could help clean up the river.
“It’s really important that people take their litter home with them if they come for a visit by the river,” he said.

“But we also need to realise that our actions at home, like pouring chemicals down the drain or littering on the streets, has a big impact on our rivers and creeks,” he said.
Registrations open 7am. For more details, phone 131 722 or visit www.melbournewater. com.au.

Secondary schools in Melbourne’s west are being urged to embrace a program that aims to drive down the number of young people killed in car crashes.
e RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council is working to cut road fatalities and serious injuries caused by car crashes in Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton and Wyndham.
Chairman Jim Giddings said young drivers continued to be the most at-risk people on the west’s roads. “Young drivers comprise a small proportionoflicenseddriversyetaresubstantially more involved and over-represented in road crashes, fatalitiesandinjuriesthanotherdrivers,” MrGiddingssaid.“Immediatelya erobtaining their licence, they are at the greatest risk.”

– Fit2Drive and Looking A er Our Mates. He said both programs were endorsed by VicRoads and the TAC and were delivered in a school environment. But he said not all schools had taken up the option to deliver either of the programs to their students.
“We still have a handful of secondary colleges that have yet accepted the challenge of participating,” he said.
e Victorian Community Road Safety Partnership Program has provided funding to support RoadSafe Westgate in addressing road safety issues throughout the west.
For more details on Fit2Drive, call Gavin MacDonald on 0405 456 496. For more details on Looking A er Our Mates, phone Mark Stone on 0409 384 619.

Ravy Leang-Slattery knows the di erence an education can make to children living in Cambodia’s poorest province, Prey Veng.
As a child growing up in the area, Ms Leang-Slattery watched her mother make endlesssacri cesandsellallherchickenssoher daughter could attend school in the country’s capital, Phnom Penh.
Her sacri ces and the help of charities allowed Ms Leang-Slattery to get an education, learn English and eventually go to university.
Now living in Hoppers Crossing with her husband, Wayne Slattery, Ms Leang-Slattery is hoping to help other children achieve their goals. e Slatterys have set up a trust to build and fund a school in Prey Veng. Without the extra education, they would be forced to work on their families’ farms, which Mr Slattery says are getting too small to be viable. “ ere are no chances for students to get training in English and computer skills. is could help them get employment in the city.”
e trust needs to raise $30,000 to fund the school, which Mr Slattery hopes to open next year. ecouplehaveboughtlandfortheschool and will travel to Cambodia in July to start the building process. ey have been working on the project for about 18 months.
To help raise the funds to build and open the school, Mr Slattery has organised a trivia and auction night with the help of Altona North Bowls Club. e event is on June 28, from 6.30pm. Tickets cost $25 and provide a two-course meal, an auction and live entertainment. To attend or donate auction items, call Mr Slattery on 0408 583 723.

IIt is reassuring for Wyndham families to know that the principal at their local college brings years of experience and a genuine passion for the students to the position.
Hoppers Crossing Secondary College principal Wayne Terrill taught various subjects at different year levels and spent time getting to know the students before taking on the pivotal role.
“I have been a career adviser, camps coordinator, sport coordinator, head of the PE and health department, coordinator for year 7-10 and assistant principal,” he says.
“I’ve been meeting and learning about our students since 1984.
“We now have about 1390 students, and wonderful facilities including a $2 million science centre; international leadership programs; and recently refurbished facilities such as the trade wing, basketball and tennis courts.”
For the past 30 years, the college has combined an academic and trade-orientated curriculum including VCE, VCAL, VET programs and tertiary enhancement studies provided through Melbourne and Monash universities.
The college provides tailored curriculums to individual students.
Students are also given opportunities to develop leadership skills through programs such as Youth Parliament, United Nations mock conventions and international learning experiences to the US, Italy and China.
A cyber safety forum was hosted by Mr Terrill and delivered by guest speakers from internet safety program organisation ThinkUKnow at the school last night. Forums like this are regularly held for Mr Terrill to maintain a strong connection with the parents of both the College and wider community.
An open day will be held on May 21, with tours from 9am and 6pm followed by an information session at 7pm.
To register your attendance at the open day, email pr@hopcross.vic.edu.au or phone the college.

Gospel values are bringing out the best in students at school and in their private lives at MacKillop College.
The school community at MacKillop College strives to encourage individuals to reach their full potential as lifelong learners - a philosophy
Principal Rory Kennedy takes to heart.
MacKillop is a Catholic co-educational secondary College named after Mary MacKillop, co-founder of the congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart.
Inspired by Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop, students at the College are encouraged to participate in a spirit of cooperation and to develop a joy of lifelong learning.
Staff provide an innovative, challenging and collaborative learning and teaching environment in a rapidly evolving society.
The College celebrates 45 years of Catholic education in Werribee and the Catholic ethos of the school underpins curriculum and personal interactions. Each student is supported in their individual journey to exceed their potential and to develop personal integrity and independence.
Mr Kennedy says MacKillop endeavours to provide an outstanding education that integrates faith, life and culture.
“The College pursues excellence in learning and teaching to support the vision of Catholic education in the development of the whole person, founded upon gospel values. The MacKillop community strives to follow in the footsteps of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop.
We are so proud of who she was and still is to us.”
He strives to ensure that his leadership style is in accordance with the mission of the Church.
“Our vision statement is ‘Celebrating all life, challenging all people, dreaming the new day.’
I lead the MacKillop Community in accordance with the our vision and mission statements which encompass pastoral care and faith development, and I also lead the planning of the financial and future objectives of the College.
“I am a representative of the Catholic archdiocese of Melbourne with a belief in and commitment to, Catholic education animated by the charism of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop and our Josephite tradition,” Mr Kennedy says.
Mr Kennedy has been with MacKillop for almost 30 years and says
pastoral care is at the forefront at the College.
“Parents are looking for a place that’s safe and where there’s a joy of learning. We are known for being that place. We have a beautiful environment with state-of-the-art facilities where a major emphasis is placed on digital contemporary learning strategies; the College is incredibly ICT savvy.”
The pathways available to senior students continues to diversify with the introduction of Sports Education and Development Australlia Program (SEDA) which is a community based program.
Senior students are offered an impressive array of more than 40 VCE subjects with alternative pathways through VCAL and VET certificates.
In 2014, the College introduced the Trade Training Development Program Certificate II in Engineering Studies Mechanical and Fabrication Streams as another pathway for our senior students.
Some of the programs offered have been designed to foster close links with the local community and to raise awareness of local, national and international citizenship and responsibility.
The Individual Needs Program offers a contemporary Gifted and Talented curriculum and support to students who experience learning difficulties.
Visions for future development include the building of a College Chapel to nurture education in faith and additional learning spaces to expand and complement the existing facilities.
MacKillop College is at Russell St, Werribee. Call 8734 5200 for more information. www.mackillop.vic.edu.au

35 Thomas Carr Drive, Tarneit 8734 2444
Aclose knit community spirit has transformed Thomas Carr College from a small school with humble beginnings into one of the prominent Colleges in the western suburbs.
Thomas Carr College principal Dr Andrew Watson was appointed as the third principal of the college in 2011, following founding principal Paul D’Astoli and Bruce Runnalls. He was principal of Mercy Regional College in Camperdown for six years prior to his appointment.
“As the principal of a school you have the responsibility to encourage all members of the school community to work to the best of their abilities, to realise their potential and strive for equality and excellence. It is also important to provide a learning culture that enables students to experience success within a safe and healthy environment,” he says.
Thomas Carr College was established just 18 years ago but its heritage spans 169 years. In 1997 there were 72 Year 7 students at a temporary site in Tarneit Road before moving to its permanent site the next year. Classes began in portables with donated equipment and these students went on to complete the College’s first VCE classes in 2002.
Now 1200 students are enrolled.
A holistic approach to education is central to the school’s philosophy. As a Catholic School, teachers aim to educate students to have an appreciation of the spiritual as well as the intellectual and physical aspects of their lives, Watson says.
“My vision for Thomas Carr College seeks to improve learning and teaching, developing the use of technology across all areas of the College and further developing the College through the implementation of the $22 million capital development plan for the next 10 years,” Watson says.
In the spirit of Archbishop Thomas Carr, young men and women are encouraged to strive for excellence according to their individual gifts and are challenged to pursue justice in our world.
“The reason for my desire to become a principal was to be able to have the ability to influence, implement and develop policies and programs which will lead to the development of quality learning and teaching experiences and the provision of pastoral care that nurtures the dignity of each student.”

Neat as a pin inside and out, this house offers all the necessities for a growing family, with plenty of space and welcoming comforts. There are three bedrooms, two with built-in wardrobes, the main has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. There is a separate lounge room at the front, and a family-meals area next to the kitchen. Stainless-steel appliances, including a dishwasher, add to the amenity of the kitchen. A covered pergola caters for downtime and entertainment, and a big backyard delivers plenty of room for children’s play. Car accommodation is plentiful, with an extended remote-controlled single garage with back access, and a double carport with extra height for a boat or caravan. The property is just minutes from schools, shops and transport.

If a house is more than just bricks and mortar, but about a great lifestyle, this is a property to put on top of your must-see list. The house has solid street cred with its LED-lit wooden walkway anked by giant yuccas and synthetic grass, grey render and steel balustrades. It more than holds its own once inside where high ceilings, matt porcelain oor tiles, marble inserts and solid timber oorboards add class and a harmonious ow. Four bedrooms include the main which has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. At the front is a study, and a lounge room with views of the Werribee River. The large kitchen has stainless-steel appliances, including a dishwasher. At the back, an open-plan family-meals spills out through wooden bifold doors to a merbau deck under a pergola. Potential back gate access, ducted heating and cooling, in-slab heating and split-system are other perks.

To celebrate another exciting AFL season, Australia’s leading home builder is giving away trips to the Gold Coast to enjoy a game at Metricon Stadium.
All you have to do to enter is visit any Metricon display centre throughout Victoria, New South Wales or South Australia, complete an entry form and you could be one of eight winners to enjoy a Metricon Stadium experience.
Prizes include return ights for two adults from your nearest capital city to
the Gold Coast, one night’s twin-share accommodation at the Mercure Gold Coast Resort and two tickets for an AFL game at Metricon Stadium.
“We really do love our footy at Metricon,” managing director Ross Palazzesi says.
“And have been delighted with our partnership which began in 2011 with the Gold Coast Suns and the AFL.
“The feedback that we receive from anyone who attends a game at Metricon Stadium is so positive we wanted to give

more people from interstate the chance to experience a game rst-hand at our fantastic ground.
“We think all the passionate Western Bulldogs, Swans, Cats, Pies, Saints and Port Power fans should get a chance to see their team take on the Suns at Metricon Stadium this season and encourage them all to get to their nearest Metricon display centre to enter for a chance to win.”
Visitors to Metricon Stadium this AFL season can check out the new Metricon

Fired Up Deck near the main entrance. Collecting a banner from the Fired Up Deck, then ashing it during the game, provides a chance to win great prize packs at every match.
“Also, make the time to visit the Metricon Home Hub, our impressive experience centre…. Here you can learn more about the Gold Coast Suns, Metricon home designs and special offers,” says Palazzesi. To learn more about the promotion, visit www.metricon.com.au/welovefooty.

First-home buyers and parents-to-be, Prue Le Cornu and Xhavid Emini, are among the many couples who have bought at Kingsford estate in Point Cook.
Developed by Peet Limited, Kingsford is almost sold out – there are less than 40 home sites remaining. Buyers such as Le Cornu and Emini are attracted to the estate’s home sites starting from $250,000 and ranging in size from 398-square-metres to 581-square metres.
“I always knew I wanted to buy a property in Point Cook,” Le Cornu said.
“I have lived in and around the area since 2004 – when there was practically
nothing here – and I have watched the neighbourhood grow.”
Finding a family-friendly community was high on the couple’s agenda, because as well as having a baby on the way, they are welcoming Emini’s daughters into their new home.
“We really wanted an estate with a family focus and we like that Kingsford has been designed for families – for people like us,” Le Cornu said. “We are really looking forward to bringing our baby home to our new house at Kingsford.”
Kingsford is close to childcare centres, schools and Point Cook Town Centre.
Aircraft and Werribee train stations are nearby.
“It’s really exciting to be a rst-home buyer – I’ve always rented,” Le Cornu said.
“As a child, my family moved around a lot so I’m looking forward to having a place that we can call ours, where our kids can grow up.”
Home buyers who buy one of the nal home sites in Stage 11 will be close to the community’s largest and newest park, Hargrave Park.
For more information about Kingsford, contact the sales of ce or visit the estate’s website.

Dr. Tony Stubbs, Eye Surgeon, says that just about anyone can have their vision restored and be rid of their glasses for most of the time. And this is without the use of laser surgery.
Dr Stubbs, a visiting specialist at the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs.
“My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery from 1963! He has now passed away but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon,” Dr Stubbs says.
A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses.
One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision due to congenital cataracts even with the use of thick glasses. Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses. That inspires me.
“Seeing my patients’ bright smiles after surgery, as they stop squinting and can read without glasses, is definitely the best part of my job.”
No referral is needed and no out-of-pocket expenses are incurred for an assessment to enable all options available to be considered.

ere was cause for celebration at Point Cook Football Club at the weekend.
But this time, it wasn’t for a crunching tackle or miraculous goal. e Bulldogs were instead showing off their hard work, with the club’s junior Victorian Women’s Football League side playing its first home game.
While Point Cook lost to Sunbury, 15.19 (109) to 0.2 (2), head coach Belinda McErvale said the new side’s progress had been pleasing.
“ ere are a few youth girls’ teams around the area, and I knew that some of them were struggling a little bit for numbers, but we have just kept growing and growing,’’ she said.
“We have got 23 girls in the squad at the moment … they are just always eager to learn and improve each training session. ere is a really positive atmosphere around the club.”
First-time coach McErvale, who played for VWFL side Melbourne Uni for more than 10 years, said developing a senior side was high on her priority list.

The Western Jets have continued to charge up the TAC Cup ladder by nailing their fourth win in a row on Saturday. The Jets proved far too good for the Bendigo Pioneers in a 66-point, 14.10 (94) to 4.4 (28) win. The Jets’ victory was set up in a blistering second term in which they kicked five goals to Bendigo’s one. Liam Duggan continued his great start to the TAC Cup season with another best-on-ground performance for the Jets. Up forward, Mitchell Norton was the club’s leading goalscorer with four. The weekend’s victory improves the Jets’ record to 4-3 this season and puts the club in fourth spot on the ladder. The Jets’ next match is against Northern Knights on Sunday, May 25, at Preston City Oval.
Manors Lakes was barely hampered by poor conditions in its Western Region Football League division 2 clash against Braybrook. The Storm won by 130 points: 32.14 (206) to 10.16 (76). Heath Hunter was unstoppable on the Manor Lakes forward line, kicking eight goals. Ty Priest kicked six goals and Benjamin Leonard four. On what was a tough day for the Bombers, Brent Buckow worked hard and was named best-on-ground for Braybrook. The win didn’t move Manor Lakes up the ladder, but its percentage did increase by 22 per cent. In other division 2 results, Glen Orden beat Parkside, West Footscray smashed Sanctuary Lakes, and Sunshine Heights was too good for Tarneit.

Werribee City collected just one point from its home clash with Pascoe Vale in the National Premier League on Sunday.
e hosts took longer to find their touch, giving Pascoe Vale the perfect opportunity to hit the scoreboard.
Just six minutes in, Jonathan Voulgaris put the away team in front when he sent the ball into the back of the net.
Citystruggledfollowingtheearlyconcession, and Pascoe Vale had chances to go further ahead.
But a er several crucial saves from Werribee keeper Tommy Dunn, City started to have an impact at the attacking end and soon found an equaliser. Josh Groenewald did the damage, putting a header into the goal to tie the score at the 49-minute mark.
Both sides had their chances to break the deadlock in the next 25 minutes, but neither was able to turn a half chance into a goal.
Despite Werribee losing Daniel Petrov to a red card, a late penalty in the 94th minute looked as if it was going to hand City the win But Milan Savic’s kick missed everything and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
In other results, Hoppers Crossing continued its domination of the State League 4 competition with a 4-1 win. Maribyrnong Greens SC became the sixth side to lose to the Reds this season. Zia Sherzai scored a double for Hoppers, while Brian Chesson and Marc Barbieri each kicked a goal.
e Reds are three points clear on top of the table, with an impressive goal difference of 15.
Also in State League 4, Point Cook fell to a 0-1 loss to Altona North SC. David Dennerley scored the winner for Altona North, dropping Point Cook to seventh on the table. Emilio

Basketball
Werribee was unable to make the most of a fast start against Ringwood in Big V men’s basketball on Saturday night. The Devils gave up a 15-point quarter-time lead for a 72-78 loss. Werribee managed only 10 points in the final term, shooting at a disappointing rate of three from 17 from the field and zero from three from beyond the three-point line. There were no such problems for Ringwood, which collected its 10th win of the season. Jordan Hughes worked hard for the Devils, finishing with 21 points. Also impressive for Werribee were Aaron McCuin and Jonathan Sonda, who both achieved double-doubles. The weekend’s loss dropped Werribee from seventh to 10th on the ladder. The Devils will look to rebound this week when they take on fifth-placed Hume City.
Football
Williamstown continued its good run of form in the VFL with a 56-point win against Frankston on Sunday. After trailing by 11 points at quarter-time, Williamstown began to find its groove in the second term. Kicking four goals to two for the quarter took the Seagulls to a three-point lead at half-time. From there, the floodgates opened. Williamstown allowed the Dolphins to kick only three goals for the rest of the match. There were no such problems at the other end, with the Seagulls going on a goal-scoring rampage. On the back of six goals from Ryan Ferguson, Williamstown kicked 12 majors in the half for an 18.10 (118)-8.14 (62) win.

A dominant first half from City West was enoughfortheFalconstoholdonforafive-goal win against Southern Saints in the Victorian Netball League.
With Kath Knott taking control in the goal area, City West opened up a 13-goal lead at half-time last Wednesday.
Knott scored 17 goals from 18 attempts to guide her side to a commanding position.
However, with the Falcons playing three games in one week, City West coach Marg Lind went into player management mode.
Knott sat out the second half, which allowed the Saints to make a late run.
But it wasn’t enough to conquer the Falcons, who held on for a 51-46 win.
Despite the victory, Lind was disappointed with her side’s inability to adapt to positional changes by the Saints.
“We allowed them to put two running goalers on us, which was a good test,” she said. “AttheendofthegameIsaidtothedefenders, there you go, there’s a sign.
“We have probably been working against a taller goaler every week and then they come and put two smalls on and it was just a bit of a shock to the system.
“We didn’t think hard enough. We didn’t problem-solve when we were under pressure in the second half.”
e result continued City West’s remarkable run through the VNL competition.
e undefeated Falcons are on top of the ladder with a perfect 12-0 record.
Last week was only the second time this season that the Falcons’ winning margin was kept to single digits.
With a busy schedule ahead, Lind said her team wouldn’t train throughout the week in an effort to stay fresh.
“We’ve put in some hard yards in the past few weeks knowing we can’t really afford to train [this week],” she said.
“ ere’s also ANL [Australian Netball League] training that most of ours are involved in, and a lot of them still have school netball as well.
“Wejustcan’taddourowntrainingontopof that workload.”
e Falcons’ next match is against the Geelong Cougars on Wednesday.

Werribee Devils coach Lloyd Klaman isn’t hiding the fact he has high expectations for his team.
A er earning promotion into the Big V division 1 women’s competition, Klaman isn’t content with merely making up the numbers.
“We are here to play finals,” he said. “Anything less than that would be pretty disappointing for us as a team.”
Even this early in the season, the Devils appear to be on track to deliver the coach what he wants.
While many teams would have struggled with the jump in class from division 2 to division 1, the challenge has brought the best out of Werribee, which is enjoying a great start to the season.
e Devils sit in third spot on the ladder and are one of the highest-scoring teams in the competition.
“It is a tough league,” Klaman said. “I think between second place and 10th place, only one game separates everybody. It’s pretty tightly contested.
“Every week, someone can beat you. Last year, we could be off our game 15 or 20 per cent and still come up with a win.
“ is year, you really have to be ready to play.”
Last year, the Devils were hard to beat on their home court, with a 9-1 record through the regular season.
e trend is showing no signs of slowing

down, with Werribee already 3-1 at the WerribeeBasketballCentre. It’stheclub’saway form that Klaman is hoping to improve in the coming weeks. e Devils are currently 2-2 on the road.
“I think it needs to be better, especially if we have visions of making the final four at the end of the season,” he said.
“We need to be able to go on the road and take care of business there.
“I think the travel can be tough. We have trips as long as three hours. Coming up, we have a flight to Mildura as well, so we’re going to have to get that one handled.”
A er a win against Southern Peninsula Sharks last week, the Devils will look to continue their good form when they face Whittlesea on Saturday night.

Given what has happened in the last week, what do you tell your players about bumping the opposition?
For me, nothing changes, when the opposition has the ball, tackle them. If you feel the need to bump them, that is OK, just avoid making contact with the head. What advice would you give to junior coaches (under 12’s and up) about the physical side of the game-bumping, tackling, shepherding etc?
Always protect yourself. That is the number one thing. Be decisive with your decision making, tackle hard, protect somebody else like you would expect it done for yourself, and avoid bumping or making contact with anyone in the head. The Viney suspension has been done to death in the media, by the time this goes to print the appeal will have decided things. It has been so frustrating and disappointing to people that have been involved in AFL football at all levels. People like simplicity and consistency, and the whole bumping-contact issue and the Match Review Panel is neither. How somebody can deliberately elbow another player in the head and get 2 weeks, and a bump with accidental head contact is treated the same way is terribly confusing. I don’t think there is any point changing the way we coach the game based on recent events. I want to take this opportunity to remind Tigers fans of all denominations that our game against Richmond has been moved from Torquay to Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday May 24th starting at 1.10pm. The game will be live on ABC TV but I would love to see as many Werribee Tigers supporters as possible cheer us on against the ‘other’ footballing Tigers. e
first thing I noticed about the Lancer was how roomy it is. e compact exterior belies its inner width, providing plenty of arm room in the front and enough space in the back for three kids to be content for about 50 kilometres before their first fight.
e boot is surprisingly spacious too, its 400 litres made larger by the split rear seats that fold flat.
e LX version has a few bells and whistles but there aren’t too many buttons, thanks mainly to the user-friendly touch screen that controls the radio, MP3 and CD player (with six-speaker stereo), phone and reverse camera display. e Bluetooth connection is hassle free.
Most of the functions on the touch screen, as well as cruise control, can be operated via buttons on the steering wheel. ey’re easy to use while still concentrating on the road, although I kept hanging up on incoming calls because the answer and end-call buttons are close together and a little hard to distinguish at first.
ere’s also voice control, which works well. e business end of the dashboard is nice to look at with nothing obscured by the steering wheel. Gauges are limited to the tacho and speedometer. Temperature and fuel level displays are on a small, multi-function digital screen which also has trip computer data such as fuel consumption and kilometres until empty. edesignershavegonewithsimplicity rather than wannabe jet-fighter cockpit, and it works.

e leather seats are comfortable and heated in the front. I was sceptical of this feature until a drive from Geelong on a particularly cold and wet day where it proved rather sublime.
Unlike the 2002 Lancer coupe I once owned, this Lancer LX doesn’t exude raciness to look at, but the 2.0 litre engine doesn’t let you down on a freeway entrance. It sits comfortably at 2000rpm at 100km/h (using just 5 litres/per 100km on a flat deck), which you’ll easily exceed if not paying attention.
e CVT automatic transmission has the Sportronic option, which provides clutch-free manual gear shi ing that lets you channel the Lancer’s rally heritage. It shoots off like a rocket in first gear. In full auto mode the gear changes are smooth, and there’s none of the lag that you o en get with smaller cars.
e LX will set you back $2000 more than

the base ES model, but for that you get a host of extras including a display audio system and reversing camera and sensors, leather trim, sports seats and leather steering wheel. It also has chrome accents and door handles,

which enhance the Lancer’s, shall we say, familiar exterior.

Kia chose New York to unveil its all-new Carnival, a smart move as people movers are very much a major part of the automotive scene in the USA.
Australians also like people movers, though many opt for the macho look of an SUV rather than a bus-type vehicle.
Cleverly, the 2015 Kia Carnival has a bold look that may suit both types of Australian buyers. e big grille certainly gives new Carnival a semi-SUV look.
Interestingly, the all-new Carnival completes the restyling of Kia’s entire lineup by the famed German car designer Peter Schreyer.
e new Carnival is aimed at maximising interior volume, both in the cabin and luggage area. We are told that considerable attention has been given to providing a quiet, comfortable cabin.
Carnival is available in seven and eightpassenger con gurations, though at this stage the Australian speci cations are to be nalised. We may not get both seating choices here.
Despite the overall width and height remaining virtually unchanged, the Carnival provides more front shoulder room and greater leg room in all three rows of seats.
e horizontal design theme of the dash and instrument panel creates a sense of width and provides a more upmarket feel.
e use of so -touch materials gives it a more upmarket feel.
As before, the new Carnival has various interior storage options to keep passengers occupied. e bells and whistles include Kia’s UVO infotainment and telematics system. is will be the rst Kia model to o er four new eServices safety features: geo-fencing,

speed alert, curfew alert and driving score.
e Kia app connector can provide you with Pandora, iHeart radio and Yelp.
At its heart, the Carnival is powered by a direct injection 3.3-litre V6 engine, replacing the 3.5-litre V6 found in the current Grand Carnival. It produces up to 205kW of power and has been tuned for mid-range torque. e engine is mated to a high-tech six-speed automatic transmission.

As the Americans don’t particularly like diesel engines, only the petrol unit was discussed in the New York reveal.
We certainly anticipate that Australian buyers will be able to buy a turbo-diesel, probably an enhanced version of the 2.2-litre four-cylinder unit seen on current models.
New Carnival models will come with active safety features such as electronic stability
control, traction control system, brake assist system, electronic brake force distribution, and ABS brakes.
For easier parking and vehicle manoeuvring, the surround view monitor provides images from cameras placed around the vehicle.
e Carnival will come to Australia in the rst quarter of next year, with speci cations and prices to be announced closer to that time.
