e future of the Werribee Racing Club has been guaranteed by Victorian Premier and Racing Minister Denis Napthine in the midst of the shock resignation of its chief executive. In an exclusive interview with Star Weekly, Dr Napthine said the addition of the international quarantine centre meant that the grounds of the club would not be turned into another housing estate.
“Having that quarantine centre has guaranteed the future of the racecourse,” he said. “ ere were some threats under the previous government about closing the actual racecourse down.”
e Werribee Racing Club has had its fair share of setbacks, from cancelled race meetings because of an unsafe track through to an unexpected storm in December, 2011, that caused serious damage to several buildings.
In August, 2012, Racing Victoria launched an investigation a er it was revealed asbestos
had been found in some of the older buildings at the club.
Dr Napthine said the only hurdles facing the club in the future would be ones used for steeplechases.
“While there have been problems with the track, they’ve largely now been resolved so we see a very important future at Werribee as a racing centre as well,” he said.
“ ere will be ongoing regular race meetings there.”
When directly asked if the long-term
survival of the Werribee Racing Club could be guaranteed, he said: “Yes, you can guarantee it because we need the quarantine centre”.
Dr Napthine’s guarantee came as club chief executive Ross Kendell announced his immediate resignation last week.
e previous state government has spent $5 million upgrading the track surface and drainage.

Wyndham was largely ignored in this year’s state budget, with the city missing out on any funding for roads, dilapidated schools and a new justice precinct.
e only new project in the municipality to be included in the budget is a prep-year 9 school to be built at Point Cook south-east.
e school is one of 11 in growth areas that willbebuiltunderapublic-privatepartnership.
ey will share in more than $190 million in funding.
But the government has not revealed how much will be spent at Point Cook.
Earlier this year, Wyndham council warned the government that it needed to fund at least two new schools this year.
It also called for the budget to include money for urgent upgrades to Werribee Secondary College, e Grange College and Werribee Primary School. All three schools missed out on funding, despite the budget including money to upgrade 70 schools.
Commuters will be forced to put up with Wyndham’s congested arterial roads for at least
another year, a er the municipality was over looked for funding for road upgrades.
Opposition treasurer and Tarneit MP Tim Pallas accused the government of “snubbing” Wyndham.
“ is government has le our students in unfinished school buildings and our commuters in gridlock,” he said.
“With no new funding commitments across Werribee, Tarneit and Wyndham Vale, to say the Napthine Government has snubbed Wyndham – the fastest growing municipality in the state – is a gross understatement.”

e number of homeless people in Wyndham has grown by 300 per cent during the past 10 years, a new report by Wyndham council has revealed.
e report forms the council’s submission to the federal Parliamentary Inquiry into Housing Affordability and pushes for greater housing diversity.
Carol Muir, chief exective of Werribee Support and Housing (WSH), a group that offers housing support to marginalised people, backed the council’s submission.
She told Star Weekly that Wyndham’s poorer residents were struggling with inadequate
resources and the number of homeless people in the municipality was now approaching 450.
“We really are concerned about the vulnerability of some of our residents,” Ms Muir said. “ ere is absolutely no emergency accommodation of any kind in Wyndham.”
Ms Muir said WSH’s own research showed that family violence was one of the leading drivers of homelessness.
Nicole May and Ryan Godwin have spent the past four years struggling to find stable accommodation for themselves and their three children. A er moving to Werribee last year they spent months moving from one rough
sleeping arrangement to another. e family slept in tents, and even the family car, before being offered transitional accommodation.
“My two youngest sons have mental disabilities and no-one wants to give us a chance,” Ms May said. “We’ve been on the commission housing waiting list since November last year.
“I’m just very aware that there are more people out there in the same situation and it makes me sad that we’re taking up this place when they could use it too.”

Skyrocketing rental prices are forcing families to live in Melbourne’s fringe suburbs where they are struggling to access jobs and education services, new research from welfare agency Anglicare reveals.
Anglicare’s 2014 rental affordability snapshot examined the availability of appropriate and affordable rental properties in Melbourne for people earning the minimum wage and receiving government welfare payments.
It found that couples with two dependant children who earn the minimum wage are priced out of the rental market in the inner suburbs.
e snapshot, based on the 16,094 propertiesavailableforrentinMelbourne on April 5, found that 86 per cent of affordable rentals for families were in the outer suburbs, with 67 per cent of those properties located in Wyndham.
It also found there were no affordable rental properties in the municipality for people receiving welfare payments such as Newstart or Youth Allowance.
Anglicare principal researcher Dr Tatiana Corrales said the rental affordability snapshot highlighted a “chronic” and ongoing problem with rental affordability.
She said the shortage of suitably priced properties in Melbourne’s inner suburbs was forcing families to live in areas with insufficient public transport services and few local job opportunities, compounding their existing problems.
“Families are being forced to live in areas that are marginalised and have high levels of disadvantage,” Dr Corrales said.
“Renters are finding they can stay close to the city and pay more than they can afford or live in inadequate housing that doesn’t meet their needs. Or they are forced to live in areas that have reduced access to infrastructure and higher unemployment.”
Dr Corrales said the research highlighted how much rental prices had increased in recent years and how far behind government assistance payments were.
She has called for an increase in Victoria’ssocialhousingstockandforthe state and federal governments to work togethertoimproverentalaffordabilityby investing in the necessary infrastructure to ease the cost of living in fringe suburbs like Wyndham.

e Werribee Racing Club is searching for a new chief executive a er Ross Kendell resigned last week, claiming that the club was at a crossroads.
Kendell had been the top man at the club for two years a er previously running Werribee’s international horse quarantine centre.
He announced at the club’s annual meeting last week that he would be stepping down immediately to pursue personal interests.
“I’ve been involved in the racing industry for 24 years and I’ve enormously enjoyed the roles I’ve had,” Kendell told Star Weekly
“When I look back, the four most enjoyable years have been the ones I spent at the quarantine centre and the Werribee Racing Club.”
Kendell said he would eventually be leaving the racing industry altogether as he hoped to set up his own business.
“I’m trying to establish a business for myself
and I really didn’t think it was fair to do that while I was still employed full time here,” he said.
“For the past four years I’ve been driving here every day from Greensborough, so I definitely won’t miss that drive. But for me it was all about the destination, not the journey.”
Kendell said three new committee members had been enlisted to help the club continue to grow, andaninterimCEOwouldbeannounced shortly.
“ e club is really at a crossroads now because there are a lot of ageing buildings and I think the club needs to work a lot closer with the Wyndham City Council, and the council needs to utilise the space that they have here,” he said.
“ e community needs to embrace the club now and help to make sure that every race day is a success.”

In a fiery debate that divided his colleagues, a Wyndham councillor has accused his own council of not being transparent and not following due process.
At last week’s council meeting, during a discussion about outstanding issues, a debate began when the appointment of former mayor Kim McAliney to a voluntary position on the ‘disability, ageing and inclusion strategy and policy development committee’ was questioned.
Cr Glenn Goodfellow moved an amendment seeking a further report to be provided to the council on a policy relating to former councillors serving on the council’s own policy committees.
“ is report should contain the pros and cons of such a policy as well as whether it is desirable for there to be a period prior to which former councillors might not be able to serve on committees,” Cr Goodfellow’s amendment read.
e issue caused a division among the 10 councillors present and mayor Bob Fairclough
was required to use his deciding vote to break the stalemate and knock back Cr Goodfellow’s proposal.
is caused Cr Peter Maynard to storm out of the council chambers before making a brief and stern statement.
“It’s about being transparent in process. It’s not about the person, it never has been.
“One of the things that this council has never done properly is process, and this is absolutely inexcusable,” Cr Maynard said. He later said in a statement to Star Weekly
that comments he “made during the ordinary meeting of council on Monday night regarding process and transparency related specifically to the matter being considered and not to the organisation as a whole”.
Ms McAliney said: “I’d just like to applaud Cr Bob Fairclough for making a decision and making the right decision because really I think the report should have been separate to my appointment.
“ e process was done appropriately, but one has to question why the amendment was brought up tonight.”

Wyndham City Council is warning that services and infrastructure funding could be cut if a cap on council rates is implemented.
Leader of the state opposition Daniel Andrews announced last week that if his party was elected in November it would force all Victorian councils to cap their rates at the consumer price index (CPI) and justify any further expenses.
Mr Andrews touted the plan as a fair go
for ratepayers and said that any council that wished to raise its rates above CPI would have to make a special appeal to a commission.
“UnderLabor, councilswillbeforcedtolimit rate rises and detail where every dollar will be spent, because ratepayers deserve a fair go,” Mr Andrews said.
“ is policy also sends a clear message that we expect councils to keep their rates in line with CPI. Any increases above this must provide a clear benefit to ratepayers.”
But Wyndham mayor Bob Fairclough said
that capping rates was not the best way to reduce costs and unnecessary spending.
“IngrowthareassuchasWyndham, theneed for new infrastructure and increasing service demands in key areas, such as kindergartens and maternal and child health, means that rate increases of approximately five to six per cent are required,” Cr Fairclough said. “Capping rates increases to CPI would result in service cuts and a reduction in capital works spending, which is not what this community needs.”
Cr Fairclough said if the state government
wanted to reduce rate increases it should increase grants to growth areas to help pay for vital infrastructure.
Police have offered a $1 million reward for information about the murder of a Werribee mother in her home almost 30 years ago.
Maryanna Lanciana was found dead in her Kiely Avenue home on July 3, 1984.
A story in the Werribee Banner at the time reported that the 23-year-old mother had been shot once in the head at close range.
She was found dead in her bed by her husband who had spent the night at his parents’ house and returned home just before 1pm. Her 23-month-old son was asleep in the house at the time of her death. ere were no signs of forced entry to the house.
Police believe Ms Lanciana was shot between 10pm on July 2 and 1pm the following day.
At the time, detectives were told that two friends visited her house about 8pm on July 2. ey said she was in high spirits and was making plans to celebrate her birthday on July 13.
Last week, the homicide squad’s Detective Inspector John Potter said police believed that

Ms Lanciana’s killers were also involved in the deaths of security guard George Germanos in March 2001 and property developer Dimitrios Belias in September 1999.
Mr Belias was killed in an execution-style murder in a car park on St Kilda Road, Melbourne. Mr Germanos was shot and killed in an Armadale park.
Inspector Potter said while Ms Lanciana had had no known criminal associations, information uncovered during an investigation into Mr Belias and Mr Germanos’ deaths indicated that the same offenders were responsible for her death.
“While I can’t go into detail about the information held by investigators, we believe the same group of offenders are responsible and we are treating the three murders as linked,” he said.
“ ere are people out there who know what happened to Ms Lanciana and I am appealing to them to contact police or Crime Stoppers and tell us what they know.”

“While I understand that some people might be fearful about coming forward, we will protect them and can put measures in place for anyone concerned about their safety.

Kevin Hillier says people power is needed at the state election
With a state election looming before the end of the year and the outcome of that seemingly on a knife’s edge, there has never been a better time for people power.
Our problem in the City of Wyndham is that we have no power because we are seen as a safe seat for Labor, and that’s the end of the story. Is that still the case? Our representatives in the upper house, Bernie Finn and Andrew Elsbury, arebothLiberals;statemembersforTarneitand Lara, Tim Pallas and John Eren, are members of the Labor Party; and this election we will have a new seat, Werribee, which, according to the experts, will also be a safe Labor seat.
So where does that leave us? Status quo –and I don’t mean the ageing rockers who sing for Coles. You might ask, how can more than 180,000 people have no power? A long time ago that may have been true, but times have changed.
Wenowhaveourcouncilspending$2million to get the attention of the state and federal governments, specifically to address our road
situation. e bottom line here is, in 2014 you have the power if you have a swinging seat and if you have truckloads of money. Two million is a mini, not a truck, and we are swinging about as much as the English bowlers did during the summer. Your thoughts are welcome.
About 20 years ago a budgie landed on my back fence and became a family pet. ‘Harry’ was with us for years and it was a very sad time when he passed. While he was a “fluke” pet, he became a very much-loved part of our family. is week two rabbits have decided to make our backyard their home. We have no idea where they came from. We’ve asked our neighbours and the response was negative. So, what do we do? Sarah has been feeding them, and Hayden thinks it’s great. ey are obviously pets that have escaped, but in their best interests what do you do?

Traffic congestion on the West Gate Freeway is set to ease following the announcement that constructionofthewesternendoftheeast-west link will begin next year.
e state and federal governments have announced funding for stage two of the 18-kilometre cross-city road connecting the Eastern Freeway with the Western Ring Road, with the federal government setting aside
$1.5 billion in next Tuesday’s budget for the project.
ewesternsectionwillconnecttheWestern Ring Road with CityLink, providing motorists from Melbourne’s west with an alternative to the West Gate Bridge.
e state government says that once completed, the road will reduce travel times from Werribee to the city by 15 to 20 minutes and reduce pressure on the Monash-West Gate corridor.
Wyndham parents fear their children will be denied access to a new drug designed to prolong the lives of hundreds of cystic fibrosis (CF) sufferers, with stringent conditions being placed on its inclusion on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.
A er months of deliberation, an advisory committee announced last week that Kalydeco would only be subsidised if it was proven to significantly improve the health of sufferers. e ruling means patients will be taken off the $300,000-a-year drug if their lung function fails to improve by at least 10 per cent while they are on the medication. Manufacturer Vertex has indicated it will not agree to the conditions, leaving its inclusion up in the air.
Werribee’s Rachelle Haikalis, whose daughter Ellie, 11, was diagnosed with CF in September last year, criticised the decision. Ellie has a rare gene, G551D, that does not allow salt and fluid to flow through her body. e result is a build-up of mucus in her lungs and digestive system. About 8 per cent of CF patients in Australia – about 200 people – have

the gene. Kalydeco is the only drug found to improve the lung function of these patients.
“If Ellie was on Kalydeco, her lung function might not improve 10 per cent but it would have other benefits for her,’’ Mrs Haikalis said.
‘‘But if she doesn’t meet the condition of improving her lung function by 10 per cent, they would take it away from her.”
Tarneit’s Kate MacPherson believes the decisionwillpreventpeoplewhoneedKalydeco the most from accessing the drug.
Mrs MacPherson’s son Brody was diagnosed with CF in December last year at just four weeks old. He also has G551D.
While Brody is too young to take Kalydeco, Mrs MacPherson is worried about his future.
“It’s just mind blowing that such conditions could be placed on a drug that could prolong the lives of hundreds of children,” she said.
Cystic Fibrosis Australia chief executive Michelle Skinner said the decision meant sufferers were no closer to accessing Kalydeco.
Wyndham mayor Bob Fairclough said the funding announcement was great news.
“As seen with our recent Race to the City event, it can take some motorists well over an hour and a half to travel by car into the city each day, creating serious consequences for our infrastructure, economy, physical and mental health, and relationships,” he said.
LeadWest chief executive Craig Rowley welcomed the announcement, saying the western link would improve liveability in the
western suburbs by providing for efficient freeway movement.
Committee for Wyndham chief executive Chris Potaris said the organisation would be watching to ensure governments delivered on their promises.
“ e state and federal government have failed to address the evidence-based needs of Melbourne’s west. is announcement is certainly welcome, but we will be watching very closely.”

Reforms that forced growth area developers to give councils $268,000 for every hectare they develop have been overtaken by new government regulation and will have little effect in Wyndham.
Under developer contribution changes announcedbyPlanningMinisterMatthewGuy last week, developers will be told up front what infrastructure they need to fund and when they will be required to provide the money.
Mr Guy said the changes meant important community facilities would be in place sooner.
“With the introduction of a new infrastructure contribution plan and a streamlined
approvals process, we will cut red tape and deliver greater certainty to local government, the development industry and home buyers on the infrastructure that can be funded by development contributions,” he said.
But Wyndham council chief executive Kerry ompson said she didn’t expect the reforms to impact on local infrastructure delivery because most of the municipality’s urban growth zones were already covered by precinct structure plans, meaning developers already knew how much they needed to contribute.
“Forthoseareaswheretheplanningprocesses haven’t been finalised … officers will carefully consider the potential impacts and report back to council.”
Police are investigating the vandalising of up to 15 cars and 10 houses in a Werribee street a er residents woke to find property covered in crude language last week.
Detectives from the Criminal Investigation Unit were calling for witnesses a er they received reports of vandalism in the early hours of Monday morning.
A resident of Conquest Drive, where most of the damage was caused, said extremely obscene language was spray-painted on property.
Senior Constable Melissa Seach said police were searching for three men.
“Investigators believe three men were in the area at the time and are keen to speak to them,” he said.

Since the election I have been very impressed with the work of some of our community groups. People like Carol Muir from Werribee Support and Housing, Jennie Berrera from the Wyndham Community and Education Centre, the hard workers from the Salvation Army, the terrific staff from the Wyndham Legal Service. These services are all working hard to support the most vulnerable in our community particularly those experiencing housing pressure. It is vital that those who need extra support can access these services and so important these services remain strong.
May is Budget time, like many in this community I have serious concerns about the Abbott Budget due next week. It seems the Abbott Government is suggesting we can no longer afford to be fair. We need to ensure a quality education system, Medicare remains, the NDIS is rolled out and we protect Australian jobs.
Labor does not support the Prime Minister’s proposed budget cuts. I will oppose these cuts every step of the way. Please do not hesitate to contact my office if you need any assistance with federal matters.
Kind regards,

Wyndham council will invest more than $500,000 of ratepayer money in a new company that will manage the city’s recreation facilities. e council announced plans to set up the company, known as Western Leisure Services, to run the Wyndham Leisure and Events Centre, the Werribee Outdoor Olympic Pool and the Werribee Sports and Fitness Centre (the “Rec”).
Belgravia Leisure currently manages the
leisure centre and outdoor pool, while the Rec is run by the YMCA.
Wyndham chief executive Kerry ompson said the initial establishment of the company would cost ratepayers about $30,000, with the council to provide $500,000 in start-up equity.
But she anticipated that the $500,000 would be returned to the council through dividends.
Ms ompson would not reveal how much it would cost the council to run the centres, saying only that it had assessed a number of management models.

‘‘ It is important for operating profits to be recouped ’’ - Kerry Thompson
“It was found that over a 10-year period, the option of managing these facilities via Western Leisure Services is significantly better from a financial perspective than the alternatives,” she said.
“Councilbelievesit’simportantforoperating
profits to be recouped to off-set maintenance and asset renewal costs.”
e new company will operate at “arm’s length” from the council and will be overseen by a board of management that will appoint a chief executive.
Mayor Bob Fairclough said the new operating model would provide the best value for money for ratepayers and allow the council to cross-promote recreational programs and advocacy campaigns without going through third parties.
Police are calling on the community to help them catch a sexual deviant who broke into a Hoppers Crossing house last month and performed a lewd act.
First Constable Jeremy O’Brien said it was believed that a man in his late teens had scaled the back fence of the Hoppers Crossing home before entering through an unlocked door at about 10pm.
It is thought he could have spent up to 40 minutes in the house before he was found by mother of two Anu Bhardwaj performing a lewd act on a bed.
“ e incident appears to be isolated at this stage, although it’s quite unusual and it has had some quite difficult effects on the family obviously,” First Constable O’Brien said.
Ms Bhardwaj said her family was celebrating

her daughter’s fi h birthday with friends at the time of the incident.
“I was just standing at the laundry door calling for help and he came to the laundry, shushed me up and ran out,” Ms Bhardwaj said.
“It was a really shocking thing, especially for me and my daughters because the older one is really traumatised by the incident. Every time she goes into the bathroom or anywhere in the house she thinks there is a monster living in there.”
e man was described as being in his late teens, about 180 centimetres tall, with straight golden brown hair, thin eyebrows and a small tattoo on his le shoulder. Information to Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000.

Many children dream of running away with the circus at one time or another, but a group of Wyndham students has been given the opportunity of turning the dream into a waking reality.
Students at Truganina South Primary School were treated to a performance by performers from the Westside Circus last Wednesday. e performance was the beginning of what will be an extended residency program for circus performers at the school during terms two and three.
Victorian Minister for Arts, Heidi Victoria, launched the program, congratulating both the school and the circus for taking on the ambitious initiative.
“When young people become involved in the arts, powerful things can happen,” Ms Victoria said.
“ e arts can foster new ways of learning and support young people in their critical thinking, in making social connections and in their personal development.
“Importantly, with extended schools residency projects, it’s not only the students who benefit. ese projects provide new skills for teachers and the school community.” e project will be known as ‘Belonging’ and will culminate in a circus performance by 225 students from years 4 to 6.
Truganina principal Mandy O’Mara said the school was gearing up to be a part of the innovative program. “We’re excited about embarking on a multi-disciplinary project that examines our identity as Australians and the different groups we belong to.”

Hit-run ‘white hatchback’ sought
A girl is in hospital after a hit-and-run in a Werribee street. Police say the girl, 11, was riding her bike on Mary Avenue when she was struck by a car about 6pm on Monday. She was knocked to the ground and the car drove off. The girl was taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police are searching for the driver of a white hatchback with roof racks that was seen speeding along College Road before the incident. It is believed the car turned right into Mary Avenue, where the driver lost control. It travelled about 30 metres before hitting the girl. Wyndham North police sergeant Shannon Thompson described the incident as “horrifying” and called for the driver to come forward. “We have a number of witnesses to the incident and I would suggest to the driver that they attend a police station as soon as possible,” he said. “We have recovered a number of items from the scene, including a side mirror and indicator we believe has come from the offending vehicle.” Details: Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Vegie farmer in meter ddle
A Werribee South vegetable farmer has been placed on a good behaviour bond for three years after pleading guilty to a water offence. The farmer faced Werribee Magistrates Court on April 29 charged with interfering with works belonging to Southern Rural Water. The court heard that a Southern Rural Water eld of cer noticed an object stuck in a groundwater bore meter while visiting the farmer’s property. The object prevented the meter
from properly recording the water being used. The farmer was ordered to pay costs to Southern Rural Water of $3500 and to donate $2000 to St Kilda’s Sacred Heart Mission.

The man was interviewed by police and is expected to be charged on summons.
Wyndham backs coal-seam ban

Parking problems
Why didn’t the state government plan for more car parking spaces at the Williams Landing train station?
Surely the powers that be knew that there were going to be parking issues.
Nearby Wallace Avenue is a prime example.
There’s cars parked on both sides of the road, effectively making it a single-lane street. It’s extremely dangerous for business people and their customers trying to get in and out of driveways.
Many people are complaining that they have almost been involved in a crash trying to get out of the driveways, because the street is so narrow.
I do not understand why cars are allowed to park both sides of the road. It’s time Wyndham council had a good look at this street, before there is a major crash or fatality.

Adult cyclists on Sneydes Road in Point Cook need to keep off the footpath and use the bike lane that we have forfeited 1.5 metres of road for.
I am sick of moving over on my walk to let adults, who should know better, ride through. If cyclists are afraid, they should get off their bike and walk. It’s a footpath, not a bike path.

More than 50 exhibitors will be at Werribee Racecourse on May 15-16 for the annual Wyndham Hobsons Bay Region Careers Association (WRICA) expo. In its 17th year, the expo provides secondary school students with access to education and training providers and local employers to help them decide on their future careers. Student ambassador Jessica Ford says the expo is a chance for students to ask questions and make sure they take the right path. The former Heathdale Christian College student credits the expo with helping her decide to study a bachelor of psychological sciences at La Trobe University. “The expo was so invaluable for me because I could talk to the exhibitors, ask questions and get advice to help me decide what I wanted to study,” she says. Star Weekly reporter Charlene Macaulay was granted exclusive access to Premier Dr Denis Napthine last week.
e perception in the west, real or not, is that Coalition governments ignore the west as it had traditionally been a Labor heartland. What is your response to that?
My response is the St Albans level crossing. For 11 years Labor was in office, and that was the most dangerous crossing in Victoria –probably the most dangerous in Australia – in Labor heartland, and they did nothing about it.
We’ve been in for just over three years, and we’ve committed funding in this year’s budget to fix it. And not only fix it, we were advised to look at building rail over road as a cheaper option, and we said no to that.
Regional Rail Link is another. e biggest rail project in Victoria’s history, a $4.7 billion project, and it’s in Melbourne’s west.
While it’s called the Regional Rail Link … other beneficiaries are the western suburbs and north-western suburbs, because when you take the V/Line services off those lines, you actually create opportunity to increase the number of Metro services from Williamstown, Werribee and Sunbury.
We’ve put on more Metro services since we’ve been in government, and we’re going to have the opportunity with Regional Rail to increase the number of Metro services even further.
Another example of delivering for the west is PSOs on the stations. at significantly improves safety at the stations and the car
parks around them. We’re also committed to the East Werribee Employment Precinct, which is going to be a massive job creator and will revolutionise employment so that, whether you live in Truganina or Wyndham Vale or Werribee, you’re more likely to get a job locally, because there will be 58,000 ne will be jobs of the 21st century.
As part of that, we are spending money on Sneydes Road.
e Labor Party treats the western suburbs with contempt, because they’re safe seats for Labor, so it tends to take them for granted.
‘‘ There’ll be 58,000 new jobs in that employment precinct ’’ - Denis Napthine
We’re out there actually creating jobs, improving the infrastructure, and delivering for the western suburbs.
In last year’s budget, we provided funding for new schools at Melton, Wyndham Vale and Truganina. We built the special school at Laverton, again, an area neglected under the previous government. I’m proud that we’ve done those things for the west.
e 2013-14 state budget is being handed down this week. What’s in it for the west?
e Tullamarine Freeway widening is definitely a feature of the budget.
It’s a great program, [creating] 700 new jobs, and really important in terms of, if you go back to 2000, there were 70,000 vehicles a day using the Tullamarine Freeway, now it’s 150,000.
at’s a massive increase, causing congestion and gridlock, and this program will increase the number of lanes, so there will be a significant reduction in congestion, significant improvement in traffic flows, and a massive improvement in productivity and efficiency.
Another [improvement] will be the removal of the level crossing at St Albans. is will be over $200 million and it will be lowering the rail line there at St Albans. We’ll lower the rail line and we’ll build a new premium station, a fantastic new station with all the facilities.
ere is a $24.5 million fund for Ford workers losing their jobs. ere’s also Toyota in Altona, which is shutting down in coming years – what are you doing to create job opportunities in the west?
I think the big thing is the East Werribee Employment Precinct, that’s a clear policy of ours. It’s a unique piece of land where the State Research Farm used to be, right in the heart of Werribee, close to the Princes Highway.
While there will be 7000 residences there,

there will be 58,000 jobs, and it’s very much building on the fact that you have the Werribee Mercy Hospital there, you’ve got quite a health precinct around that, you’ve got a tertiary education precinct built up around that area, so this is about high-tech jobs, high-skilled jobs for Melbourne’s west.
Traffic congestion in and out of Wyndham is a big issue. People are spending up to two hours driving to and from the city. What are the plans to ease that congestion?

Firstly, when you’ve got the Regional Rail Link, you’ll take V/Line trains o the Werribee line, and that will free up more capacity for train services.
Also, the [Metro] train service will be more reliable, they won’t be stuck behind V/Line trains.
So we’ll get better punctuality, better reliability, and we’ll get more services out of Werribee.Itwillgivepeopletheoptionofusing the train services out of Werribee, Altona and Williamstown.
As Racing Minister, do you have any plans to redevelop Werribee Racing Club? e community doesn’t want it turned into yet anotherhousingestate.Canyouguaranteeits long-termsurvival?
e Werribee Racing Club certainly has an important role to play in our racing industry. It has been developed into a quarantine centre, so international horses are based at Werribee during the Spring Racing Carnival, which has given it a very important role and creates signi cant local jobs.
Having that quarantine centre has guaranteed the future of the racecourse, because there were some threats under the previous government about closing the racecourse down.
While there have been problems with the track, they’ve largely now been resolved, so we see a very important future at Werribee as a racing centre as well. ere will be ongoing regular race meetings there as well.
Just to con rm, can you guarantee the WerribeeRacingClub’slong-termsurvival?
Yes, you can guarantee it, because we need the quarantine centre.
Truck tra c in the inner west, particularly in Footscray and Yarraville, is a major problem.LaborhaspromisedtoputinaWest Gate distributor to alleviate this problem. What are the Coalition’s plans to tackle this issue?
e budget includes funding for stage two of the east-west link.
at will provide a second crossing of the Maribyrnong River, that will provide a direct link from Footscray Road, it will be an elevated road over Footscray Road, through Footscray, Sunshine and directly onto the Western Ring Road.
People coming from Melton, Ballarat, Geelong, Wyndham Vale and Werribee will have choices about which way to go into town. ey can go on the West Gate, or they can go on the Ring Road a little bit and then come in on the east-west link.
Because this will go straight past the top of Swanson Dock, trucks coming out of the port will go straight onto east-west link, and go to either the east or west.
Not one of those trucks will go through Yarraville or Seddon or Footscray. is will take thousands of trucks o Whitehall Street, o Moore Street, o Francis Street–thiswillbethebestthingforYarraville and Seddon and Footscray in 100 years.

Charity run: Mother’s Day Classic chief executive,Sharon Morris, is aYarraville resident regularly on the move for others

Wyndham residents are being invited to dress in their nest as the city celebrates its history in elegant fashion.
To celebrate 150 years since Wyndham was proclaimed a shire in 1864, an elaborate ball will be held at one of its most iconic locations, the Werribee Mansion.
Fashion Awards Australia will host a gala ball.
Event organiser Heather Marcus told Star Weekly 150 years of the name Wyndham will be recognised in style. “People can expect to go from the car park to the mansion in a glass horse-drawn coach. ere will also be a piper and trumpeters on the front lawn announcing the arrival of guests,” Ms Marcus said.
“I don’t want to give too much away, but it’s going to be something quite special.”

“I’ve lived here for 44 years and seen this city growfromasmallcountrytownof8000people to a sprawling city of 190,000,” she said.
“I’ve spoken to a lot of people and they’re all very proud of our history, and they think it’s important that new people come here to learn about it. ere’s so much history here that we didn’t want this special occasion to go by without recognising it.”
Ticket prices for the gala ball will be announced at a later date.

For Ivana Pinaffo, painting is a way of expressing her thoughts and emotions.
Since she was an infant, the Hoppers Crossing artist has used art to discover who she is and better understand her feelings.
“I love to see a white canvas come alive with colour and emotion,” she says.
“Itbringsmebacktomychildhood[inNorth Africa].”
Pinaffo is inviting people to explore and experience her work during an exhibition, open from this Friday until May 25, at Altona’s Louis Joel Gallery.
Lasting Impressions will also showcase the work of four other western suburbs artists: Shirley Fisher, Felicity Nicholls, Karin Zeller and Virginia Coghill.
Pinaffo says the exhibition is an opportunity for residents to support local artists.
“We all have different styles and use different mediums,” she said.
“It’s a beautiful exhibition and is a great chance for people to view our art, talk to us and buy our work.”
Pinaffo begin painting full-time about 20 years ago a er enrolling in folk art lessons. She began teaching art classes a few years later, wanting to pass her knowledge on to others.
“As a child I spent lots of time painting and drawing, but I stopped when I moved to Australia at 18. About 20 years ago I wanted to learn about different mediums so I started lessons and it developed from there.”
Pinaffo says she gets her inspiration from the world around her, viewing “everything as inspiration”.

Werribee scientists are using world- rst technology to investigate the role that chewing has on food and health.
Biomechanical engineer and CSIRO Werribee computer modeller Simon Harrison saidtheworld’s rst3Ddynamicvirtualmouth would provide detailed insights for developing healthier foods.
“In polite company, we can’t see inside someone’s mouth while they’re eating and, until now, it has not been possible to view how the chewing process alters food,” Dr Harrison (pictured) said.

“Using a cutting-edge technique called smooth-particle hydrodynamics, we have developed a virtual mouth … it predicts how a particular food breaks down and how avour is released in the mouth. It also shows the distribution and interaction of components such as salt, sugar and fat.
“ rough this technology we can view and analysehowfoodatthemicroscopiclevelworks in the mouth and how it in uences taste.”
e data will be used to help develop foods that are lower in salt, sugar and fat without changing taste.

CSIRO food materials scientist Leif Lundin believes the bene ts for the food industry could be enormous.
“ is technology will give food and ingredient manufacturers the ability not only to model the breakdown of a complex food product but also the individual components,” Dr Lundin said.
“Our research should also help create new taste sensations that could nd their way into new products on our supermarket shelves.”

Police are hunting two men a er a series of the s from Wyndham schools. e schools, in Werribee, Wyndham Vale and Hoppers Crossing were broken into during March.Audiovisualequipmentwastakenfrom all three schools.
Residents are being urged to dig deep and help raise much-needed funds to help victims of domestic violence and homelessness.
Wyndham City Salvation Army Captain Lance Jeffrey said a crew of social workers was hoping to raise a record amount of money during this month’s Red Shield Appeal.
Last year, the local crew raised $62,000, which directly funded the Salvation Army’s social work initiatives.
“ at was an exceptional year. It was a pretty significant amount to raise from one area,” Captain Jeffrey said.
“We’ve actually found that we’ve been able to raise more every year; it seems like people in Wyndham are more in tune with people doing it tough. ey seem to be very empathetic to the parts of the community that might be struggling.”
Captain Jeffrey said the Salvation Army needed people to donate money; but it’s also on the lookout for people to volunteer during the appeal.

A new trade training centre was opened in Point Cook last week in a move intended to “electrify” students’ passion for learning.
e $1.5 million facility will be shared by several schools in the Wyndham and Hobsons Bay municipalities and will start by offering training in electro-technology.
Federal Member for Lalor, Joanne Ryan, officially opened the Trade Training Centre at Emmanuel College’s Notre Dame campus.
Ms Ryan said the centre would provide
access to the VET system for students in years 9 to 12. It would also help address skill shortages in traditional trades and emerging industries.
“As a former principal I know research shows that students’ pride in their learning environment leads to increased self-esteem, manifesting in improved student outcomes,”
Ms Ryan said.
“Investing in education sends a strong message to students, their families and the community about the high value of education.
“Six years ago, when this program started, schools struggled to offer meaningful VET
programs. Today, here at Notre Dame, we see 50 students are already benefiting from the electro-technology courses offered at this facility.
“ e facility is also being utilised by the students in the VCAL program.”
VET and VCAL co-ordinator at Emmanuel College, Bobbie Evans, said that 95 students were already benefiting from the new centre.
“ is is great because we know if we have more kids getting more qualifications, they are more likely to find employment once they leave school,” Mr Evans said.

Carranballac College students, including Amber, Megan and Luis (pictured with teacher John Forrester), are rolling up their sleeves to tackle Point Cook’s litter problem. As part of Litter Week, which runs until Saturday, the students have created a litter trap at the Point Cook wetlands by planting native vegetation to catch rubbish. Mr Forrester, who is also executive officer of Wyndham’s LitterWatch group, said the students were keen to reduce the amount of litter in the wetlands and at their nearby Jamieson Way campus. He said a litter survey carried out over the Anzac Day long weekend found there were 120 pieces of rubbish strewn around the school’s boundaries, 60 of which were from takeaway food.

Upgrade your family’s lifestyle with this display home quality residence in Williams Landing.
Four years young and still covered by Watersun Homes’ structural warranty, the rendered dwelling of 28 squares has the bonus of no estate body corporate.
Behind a manicured front garden and side drive that could accommodate two vehicles, the covered entry with security door opens to a wide hall with polished hardwood oorboards.
To the right is the carpeted lounge room with stainless-steel ceiling fan and triptych windows with plantation shutters.
The main bedroom is to the left.
Highlighted by a walk-in wardrobe, triptych windows and ceiling fan, the bedroom also has a wallpaper accent wall and en suite with vanity, large shower with dumper showerhead, Ventair heat lamp and Posh toilet.
The hall continues into a vast living and dining domain, and beyond into the dedicated home theatre with tinted windows.
The vinyl-wrap kitchen incorporates the D’Amani 900mm stainless-steel oven with ve-burner gas cooktop, slide-out rangehood, tiled splashback, built-in wine storage, plumbed double fridge and Whirlpool stainless-steel dishwasher.

A doorway to the side of the pantry allows access to two bedrooms with mirror-front robes and ceiling fans, laundry, toilet, bathroom and children’s retreat or study with chandelier.
The family bathroom includes a corner shower, vanity with semi-recessed basin and bath.
A sliding door opens to the north-facing deck of about three squares. An architect has drafted plans for a pergola over the side deck and a front patio, subject to council approval. The backyard includes raised vegetable patches, pittosporum, small lawn and easy-care landscaping.
The remote-controlled double garage

includes a rear roller door for access to the yard. Complete with cooling vent, it would suit a tradesperson or someone seeking to work from home.
Other features include ducted heating, evaporative cooling, blockout blinds, 3.04-metre ceilings and tall doors.
Close to the soon-to-be-built town centre, Wyndham Village shopping centre, train station, bus and schools (including Westbourne Grammar and St Clare’s Catholic Primary), the home also has sports facilities, freeway access and the Federation Trail cycling path nearby.

e di erence between a good and a great real estate agent can amount to thousands of dollars, so it pays to take the business of selling your home seriously.
at’s why the prospective seller should seek the opinion of at least three agents before enlisting one to sell their home, e ectively auditioning them for the role.
When selecting those three, a good tip is to call the respective o ces to check on the rm’s professionalism, courtesy and e ciency.
Broadly speaking, smaller agencies claim to have a personal touch, tailor-making marketing campaigns and having the exibility of principals and decision-makers working in a hands-on role, while bigger agencies have the resources, network and reach to bring more buyers to your door.
Smart vendors should look at the total package, rather than just the bottom line of how much commission agents receive.
In particular, pay attention to word-of-mouth referrals, past results, and be sure to study agents in action, noting how sta present and conduct themselves.
Vendors should also ask agents for a written list of services, with in-built performance standards and expectations. But, as REIV chief executive Enzo Raimondo advises, always “remember that the agent is responsible for advertising the property, showing potential buyers, conducting negotiations, arranging the contract note, and following the sale through to settlement”.
Once you have developed a shortlist, it’s a

good idea to create a list of questions to ask agents. Besides the standard queries about what similar properties have sold in the area, other questions can di erentiate pretenders from the genuine article. For example, who will buy this home? … what are the property’s strengths/ weaknesses? … how can its presentation be improved? … will you (personally) be handling all aspects of the sale? … can we talk to some of your past clients?
Once you analyse the various responses and costs, it’s fair to compare apples with apples. Gut instinct should also form part of your assessment about who you entrust with a job that will have a major nancial impact on your future. Like your home, rst impressions count so remember that when making up your mind.

It wasn’t just beautiful gardens on display at this year’s International Flower and Garden Show in Melbourne.
There was also a designer cubby created by developers Cedar Woods.
While the company is known for building housing estates, this year it took part in the Kids Under Cover organisation’s annual cubby house challenge at the show. The cubby won the People’s Choice Award by

raising $6000 at the auction to raise funds for under privileged youth.
“The Cubby House Challenge was the perfect opportunity for the Cedar Woods team and our suppliers to band together and use our skills to help those in need and was a rewarding experience for all involved,” Cedar Woods Properties Victorian state manager Nathan Blackburne said.
“Kids Under Cover provides an important

community service and we were extremely excited to build the cubby and raise funds for housing youth in need and providing scholarships and a mentoring program.
“We couldn’t think of a more important social outcome than giving kids and young people a chance at a decent start in life.”
The design of “The Grubby” cubby was inspired by children’s building blocks.
The cubby house was named “The
Grubby” included interactive features such as a pegboard, climbing net, chalkboards and a bed.
“Our vision when creating this cubby was to design a space that was unique, abstract and contemporary,” Mr Blackburne said.
“We won two awards for our entry, including best architectural design and the Dulux Colour Award.”

Simon Christie admits he got into the television business just to get cool stu for free. e producer and presenter of Channel 31’s 4WDTV – currently celebrating its 400th episode – has long been obsessed with o -road vehicles.
Looking for sponsors to counter his “tight-arse” tendencies, he found 4WD companies responded with great enthusiasm to the idea of a TV show. He and his wife set about making it happen, even if they had no idea what they were doing.
“We started as a husband-and-wife team who had never held a video camera, let alone a microphone. When we got the go-ahead from the TV station, my wife and I looked at each other and said, ‘Hell, we don’t even own a camera’.”
Six months later, having spent $400 on a
handheld camera, the couple won awards for best new producer and most popular program on the community TV network.
Since then, shows dedicated to 4WD racing and adventuring have popped up all over the television landscape. All 4 Adventure has proven a hit for Channel 7, while 4WD Action recently made a splash on Foxtel.
Christie puts this success down to the star vehicle’s broad appeal. “You’ve got grey nomads who want to travel around Australia, you’ve got young guns full of testosterone who want to see cars rolling over and you’ve got young families,’’ he says.
“ e opportunity to escape our daily lives and have some adventure is part of the backbone of what made Australia what it is, and the 4WD has become the ideal platform to get us out there.”

4WDTV – one of three 4WD-related shows Christie now produces (the others are Simon Christie’s 4WD Pro Tips and Your 4X4) –now has a million-dollar budget. Catering to its diverse audience, each episode features a mix of travelogue and motorsport stunts, but Christie is keen to stress he’s more interested in education than sheer entertainment.
He’s well aware of the bad reputation some 4WD enthusiasts have.
“ ere’s nothing wrong with what we’re doing, but we are in the public eye,” he says. “We’re the caretakers and the custodians of the
bush. We spend a lot longer out there than most people. We’re the true greenies.” is is a viewpoint shared by John Rooth, recently retired host of 4WD Action. Rooth’s Unlock Australia group is dedicated to reopening “locked o ” national parks to responsible drivers. However, he admits programssuchashishaven’talwaysencouraged responsibility.
“I love at-out action, but it doesn’t work too well with the Unlock Australia ethos. We want to go out there and have a great time, but not destroy the country in the process.”
Christie sees the daredevil action as an essential element of his show, if only because it allows him to speak directly to the drivers who most need education.
“ e motorsport is there to attract the less desirable components of the 4WD community and, once we’ve got them in, we can then send a clear message of acting responsibly. If we don’t maintain the bush, if we don’t keep it pristine, then tracks get closed and we get shut out. It’s the end of something that we love.”
4wdtv is on C31 on ursdays 7pm and Saturdays 6pm. www.4wdtv.com.au, or www.4wdaction.com.au.
More than anything else about wine, it’s the story behind the bottle I love. Structured tastings and large line-ups for review tend to take the romance out of wine, but every so o en a story comes along that makes me fall in love with wine all over again.
e latest involves a Swiss captain of the Hussars and the rebirth of a vineyard he planted on the banks of the Moorabool River in Geelong in 1848.
In 1842, James Henry Dardel, a Swiss Huguenot arrived in Port Phillip on board the ship Himalaya. He established himself as one of Victoria’s early wine pioneers.
He set up vineyards in Heidelberg, then helped the Ryrie brothers establish Yering Station – he was their first winemaker. He bought land at Batesford in Geelong, where there was a Swiss community and a busy port that serviced the booming wool export industry.
‘‘ It was known as one of the leading wineries of victoria ’’
Here Dardel set to work on his property, Chaumont, planting an orchard and four vineyards: Paradise I, II, III and IV. “ e dates are all a bit vague, but the Pettavel family planted the first vines in Geelong in 1842 and Dardel planted Paradise IV in 1848, but had already started setting up his vineyards and orchards,” explains current Paradise IV winemaker Doug Neal.
Gold was found in Ballarat in the 1850s and Dardel’s Chaumont became a major supplier of wine and fruit.
“By the 1860s it was known as one of the leading wineries of Victoria, winning considerable awards in Geelong, and going well in Paris and London. Dardel’s orchard was known as one of the leading orchards in the state,” Neal says. “ rough family connections he also had become friends with Baron [Ferdinand] von Müller, who developed

Melbourne’s [Royal] Botanic Gardens, so Paradise was turned into a paradise. ey dug out a lake and diverted the Moorabool River, and planted with various species of trees.
“Phylloxera hit in the mid-1870s and a government proclamation in October 1881 declared the Geelong region had to pull up all their vines and destroy them, then the vine area had to lie fallow for a set period of time. No other wine region where phylloxera spread was forced to do this.”
Paradise IV’s modern story begins in the 1980s, when it was bought by Ruth and Graham Bonney. A er investigating the site’s history, theyplantedvinesin1988asatest. eBonneys named the vineyard Moorabool Estate and in the mid-’90s they teamed up with winemaker Neal and renamed it Paradise IV.
Neal says no other vineyard in Geelong is planted on any of the pre-phylloxera sites of the 19th century.
“ e site is the best location in Geelong,” he says.
“Paradise IV is a more protected site than nearly any other in Geelong. We get coastal breezes that blow up the Barwon, then the Moorabool until where Paradise I, II and III were and the valley flattens out and they dissipate.”
Paradise IV The Bates’ Ford Shiraz 2011 (Geelong) $36; 13.5%
An intriguing, delicious wine. It opens up rather reduced, with tinned-corn aromas that disappear quickly in the decanter to reveal vibrant perfumed spicy, stalky aromas of red and black berries, cherry with a little vanilla in the background. With a silky smooth texture, there’s perfume in the fleshy pepper, red and dark cherry, tart blood-plum flavours. There’s a bright tart raspberry line that cuts through the wine and a long, breezy finish.
Food match \ Rare steak
Paradise IV Dardel Shiraz 2012 (Geelong) $50; 13.5%
This was officially sold out until a couple of weeks ago, when an allocation due for export was cancelled, freeing up a couple of dozen cases. Get in quick. It’s a wine that builds and builds, starting with seductive, perfumed white pepper, spice, black cherry and red fruit aromas that have a rare complexity. A velvet-smooth texture then entices before vibrant flavours of cherry, blood plum, charcuterie and spice drive through the finish.
Food match \ Char siu pork

Paradise IV Chardonnay 2012 (Geelong) $45; 13%
It might have seductive, rich aromas of yellow stonefruit, cantaloupe rind, cinnamon, cedar, citrus and blossom, but this wine has its feet firmly planted on both sides of the chardonnay divide. It’s rich on the palate, with toasty, buttery notes like an old-school chard, while its energetic acid and delicate citrus (lemon and grapefruit) and mineral flavours speak more of the modern style. The appeal is immediate and lasts all the way to the bottom of the bottle.

Hildegard Shiraz 2012 (Beechworth) $50; 13.5% ½
Winemaker Doug Neal knows a thing or two about Beechworth; he’s been involved in winemaking at Giaconda for more than a decade. Layers of aromas here, with spice, stalky perfume, brooding dark fruits such as blood plum and black cherry and a lifted cedar character. They’re lovely, but are quickly surpassed by the wine’s silky mouthfeel and structure, where fine tannins meet vibrant acid and concentrated blackberry, cherry and spice flavours.

Mayhem @ Anakie Chardonnay 2013 (Geelong) $20; 13%
This wine of pedigree – from Geelong’s Del Rios winery – is made by John Durham, who made chardonnay at Cape Mentelle in Margaret River for 25 years, working with Doug Neal. With, aromas of white stonefruit, cantaloupe, spice and citrus, plus spice from oak, it’s fresh and lively, with mineral and lemony acid for the nectarine and pear flavours to hang off.

Teenager Meyrick Buchanan’s signature was one of the most sought-after in junior sport.
With a cricket bat in hand, the then Geelong resident would smash bowlers all over the park in summer before showing off his silky skills with a football in winter.
Despite still being at school, his sports resume included pulling on a green and gold for Australia in junior cricket and attending the AFL draft combine.
When a final decision was required about which sport would ultimately win his services, Buchanan made the call that cricket was the place for him and put pen to paper on a deal with Cricket Victoria and the Melbourne Renegades.
But almost exactly 12 months ago, the gun sportsman made his second life-changing decision in the space of two years when he announced he was returning to the football field.
“I wasn’t really enjoying my cricket so that made it a little bit easier to be able to come back to footy,” he said. “It was hard, but I’ve been really enjoying my footy, which has made it a lot easier.”
Buchanan resumed playing TAC Cup with the Geelong Falcons, a side in which he had starred two years earlier.
The versatile forward immediately showed he still had what it takes.
In just his third game back he was named best-on-ground for a match last year against the competition’s eventual premier, Eastern Ranges.
With his name again being bandied about as a potential draftee, Buchanan’s rise back up the ranks was halted by a knee injury.
He was subsequently overlooked in the national and rookie drafts, but that did nothing to extinguish the fire of his AFL dream.
The now 20-year-old signed with the Werribee Tigers and is intent on launching his AFL career from the VFL.
“That [being drafted to the AFL] is definitely the goal,” he said. “It might take a few years, buttheyarelookingatmature-agerecruitsnow more than ever. I just need to keep working and
‘‘ They are looking at mature-age recruits more than ever ’’ - Meyrick Buchanan
doing everything I can to get there.”
If his early form at Werribee is anything to go by, it won’t be long before Buchanan is again meeting recruiters.
It took just one game in the development league before he forced his way into the Tigers’ senior side to take on Port Melbourne last month.
After being named among his club’s best players on that occasion, he retained his spot and collected another 15 disposals against the Northern Blues.
“I’m really happy I made the decision to join Werribee,” Buchanan said.
“John Lamont [senior coach] is a really good coach and a really good person, as well, so it’s been a great start to my time there.”

The situation looked bleak for Hoppers Crossing going into half-time of its Western Region Football League division 1 clash with Altona on Saturday.
After being in control for much of the first half, the Warriors conceded five late goals in a row to see their 20-point lead turn to a 10-point deficit.
But in front of the Hogans Road Oval home crowd, the young Warriors weren’t about to let anyone down.
They stormed home in the second half to secure a vital 15.14 (104)-9.11 (65), 39-point win.
Hoppers Crossing shut Altona down, allowing it to score only a single goal in the third and fourth quarters.
There was no such trouble at the other end of the ground as the Warriors made the most of their chances.
Even in the rain and wind, Hoppers appeared to be playing dry-weather football, booting eight second-half goals.
“We really rate Altona and we knew it was going to be a hard game,” Hoppers Crossing coach Steve Kretiuk said.
“We got about four goals up at one stage and then, whether they stepped up another gear or we stopped, they kicked seven goals in that second quarter.
“We addressed a few issues at half-time and made some positional changes.
“Although the third quarter was quite even, I think we controlled the game in the second half.
“It was a tough contest so it was great for the guys to come back … we were really happy with the result.”
Ryan Kitchen was outstanding for Hoppers Crossing, kicking four goals and winning a lot of important ball around the ground. He was well supported by Ben Jago, Brydon Coles and Adam Poland, who kicked two goals each.
Kretiuk it hoping his side can learn from its second-quarter fade out.

“When you are up and about and things are going your way, I think guys tend to run harder,” he said. “We are trying to teach them that when things aren’t going our way, like in the second quarter, that’s when you need to work even harder.
“I think that is an area we need to get better at. We don’t have as much depth as some of the other sides and we can’t choose when we want to work hard.”
The weekend’s result lifts Hoppers Crossing into fourth place on the division 1 ladder with a 3-2 win-loss record.
In other division 1 results, Deer Park got the better of Sunshine, Spotswood smashed Albion, St Albans proved too good for Yarraville-Seddon, and Werribee Districts and Port Melbourne delivered a draw.

Manor Lakes recovered from a scoreless first quarter to defeat Glenorden by nine points in the Western Region Football League on Saturday.
Kicking against a strong wind in the opening term, the Storm was forced to hang tough against last year’s premiers.
After conceding three goals, Manor Lakes had its turn to make the most of the conditions in the second quarter. The Storm made every second count, booting six goals to take a 13-point lead into the main break.
Goals were a lot harder to come by in the second half, with the backlines of both sides taking over.
Despite a late charge from the Hawks, Manor Lakes was able to hold on for a 8.10 (58) to 7.7 (49) win.
Storm’s Ty Priest continued his strong start to the WRFL division 2 season, adding three majors to his yearly tally, which now sits at nine.
Around the ground, Haydn Templeton was also impressive and was named among the Storm’s best players for the second week running.
For Glenorden, Mark Pozzuto was a standout with two goals, while Beau Bostock worked hard throughout the match.
Both the Hawks and Storm have a 3-1 win-loss record and are third and fifth on the division 2 ladder respectively.
In other weekend results, Wyndhamvale proved too good for North Footscray, while Sanctuary Lakes smashed Tarneit.

Club to establish itself as a major contender in the FFV’s state league 4 competition this year. e Reds have blitzed the early stages and sit undefeated on top of the ladder.
Highlighting the club’s dominance, Hoppers enjoys a goal difference of 12 – six goals better than its closest rival.
A er a tough 2013 season, in which the club finished ninth, Reds’ president Steve Lambrakakis is rapt with the team’s present form.
“Last year was a horrible year,” he said. “As soon as we put a line through that and said, ‘that’s it, we’re all moving this way’, what we have found is that everyone’s getting on board.
“We knew we had a stronger squad than last year, and the league probably isn’t as strong as last year.
“If you add those things up, you can sit back and say we should do well this year, and that’s starting to happen.”
Along with its remarkable improvements on the field, Lambrakakis believes his club is making significant strides off it.
A er having a number of the club’s best talent poached by rival clubs in recent years, some of those exciting players are starting to return to Grange Reserve.
“When better players leave the club, they’re going to greener pastures,” Lambrakakis said.
“When these players come back, they are lookeduptowithinthesquad. eyareleaders.
Brett Gilmour, for example, went to West Gate last year. He sees what is happening at the club and came back this year.
“ e younger guys really look up to him and it’s as if they grow another foot.”

A final-quarter fightback allowed Werribee to secure a five-point VFL win against Casey Scorpions on Sunday. The Tigers started slowly at Casey Fields, giving up five goals in the first quarter. While defensively shutting Casey down, the Tigers made the most of their chances around goal to close the gap to eight points heading into the last break. With all the momentum, Werribee completed the comeback with three final-quarter goals sealing the 8.10 (58) to 8.5 (53) victory. Mason Wood was the Tigers’ leading goalscorer with three, and Michael Sodomaco was impressive around the ground. Werribee is in fourth spot on the VFL ladder with a 3-2 record. Williamstown had a come-from-behind win against Collingwood, and Footscray lost to North Ballarat.
The Western Jets enjoyed one of the club’s best wins of the TAC Cup season on Saturday, defeating Gippsland by 36 points. After taking a one-point lead into the final term, the Jets powered away, using a strong wind to their advantage for a 13.16 (94) to 8.10 (58) win. Brayden Monk was named best on ground for the Jets. Mark Orr, Caleb Sullivan and Mitchell Norton kicked two goals each. The result kept the Jets in fifth spot on the TAC Cup ladder with a 3-3 record.

If Libby Birch is anything to go by, the future of Australian netball is in good hands.
e Maribyrnong College student continues to take her game to higher levels and is turning heads at state, national and international games.

For the second successive year, Birch has been selected in the Australian 17-and-under national squad, made up of some of the game’s best juniors from around the country.
As part of her involvement in the squad, Birch will travel to the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra for a four-day training camp. Her selection in the team came on the back of a brilliant national championships at the Waverley Netball Centre in Melbourne.
“Winning the 17-and-under national championships for Victoria was just awesome,” Birch said. “We have got a really talented group anditwassuchahard-foughtbattlethroughout the week.
“It was really special because it was a real team effort that got us over the line. We had some ups and downs during the week, but we pulled together and managed to get the win.”
Birch is also an exceptional leader and has captained the Victorian under-17 side the past two years. She says the leadership side of the game is something she hopes to pursue in the future.
“I love the opportunity to be captain and I was privileged enough to get that again this year,” she said. “I find being a leader is pretty natural for me. I use my passion and desire and that sort of thing on court as well as trying to help my teammates individually off the court.”

City West remains untouchable in the Victorian Netball League a er securing its 11th consecutive win last Wednesday.
e Falcons easily defeated Peninsula Waves by 15 goals.
City West coach Marg Lind mixed things up at the start, resting gun shooter Kath Knott and starting the smaller combination of Julia Woolley and Alice Teague-Neeld.
e new shooting duo didn’t let her down, putting up 16 goals in the first term to give the Falcons a six-goal lead.
ere was no letting up across the next three quarters with City West increasing the lead by the end of each break.
Knott returned to the shooting fold, scoring 22 goals from 24 shots.
Woolley and Teague-Neeld finished with 23 and 14 goals, respectively, to complete the impressive 59-44 win.
“We were looking to get about 15 goals every quarter, so it was good to hit that target,” Lind said. “We decided to start the two smaller goalers, just to make sure we are keeping things alive heading deeper into the season.
“Itwasprettypositivetoseethatwewereable to do that against the third-placed side.”
City West remains on top of the VNL championship ladder, two games clear of its nearest rival.
It isn’t just in the top division that there’s cause for celebration.
Lind was also rapt with the progress of the club’s division 1 and under-19 sides, which are first and third, respectively.
“Our focus has never just been the championship,” Lind said. “I get disappointed if anyone loses. My goal is to look a er every player in the club.
“Division 1 has been a transition group for us, but this year I think they have a little bit more of a competitive mindset.
“ e 19s are very raw. For them to be top four, I think, is exceptional.”
City West will look to maintain its unbeaten run this week when it takes on the Southern Saints.
“Saints are tough and they are aggressive, so it will be a physical match,” Lind said. “It was physical last week, too, so I guess Peninsula is a good lead-in for us.”

The amount of statistical data generated in a game is quite amazing. What to you, are the key indicators of whether your side is going well (apart from the scoreboard)?
Clearances. if you are on top there, that then generates inside 50’s, so they are an important statistic. How well you are defending is also a strong indicator, that is illustrated by your rebound 50’s. Effective tackles are also important, they can keep you in the game, even if you are not playing well. If you tackle well, you might be close enough on the scoreboard to get a win late in the game, if the team’s form can improve
There are lots of different people in the Coaches box during a game, have you implemented any sort of do’s and don’ts?
Normal sort of things, like avoid barracking and too much commentating. Stay in control and keep focused. Zone coaches watch your zone, try to avoid watching the game. No hot food or flatulence and keep suggesting ideas.
What is the difference between TAC Cup football, local footy and the VFL?
The main thing is the speed of the play, and as a result, the speed of the decisions you are forced to make. Pressure levels are higher, and that is just in our Development team, not the senior VFL team. All the players say it is a jump up from the underage TAC Cup program to our Development squad, and likewise from local football.

Ԃ Great to see Michael O’Keefe named as coach of the Yarraville Club Cricket Club for the next two years. “Tocka” is a legend in local footy and cricket, but I have always thought he would make his mark in cricket after his playing days. Over the years there haven’t been a lot of players who have crossed over from one club to the other, and a few high-profile ones like Joskun Aziz, Marcus O’Connor and Anthony Eames made headlines. In the current line-ups, Scott Clouston and Jake Wilson have been on both sides of the fence. Both clubs have produced some champion players and great football people. Faced with having to give the aesthetically pleasing Elantra a faceli , Hyundai’s designers extended its wind-swept curves into a new front bumper, grille and rear end that enhance its shark-like appearance.
