TRACK & FIELD

Spring Hill College (SHC) men & women’s Track & Field head coach Craig McVey enters the sixth year of the program’s existence and the final year of the NCAA Division II membership process with squads fully stocked to compete in every event. “We have made huge strides in developing a wellrounded team throughout the past five years,” he says. “This year, we are looking to take our program to a place where we will be ready a year from now to challenge for the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) outdoor championship with both teams.”
McVey also has a good mix of returning veterans along with a solid core of young talent around which he can build. “Now that we are at what, for all intents and purposes, is a full squad, we will compete in most events and we have depth in most of them,” he says. “We also feature specialized talents for specific events. In the past, we had a few great athletes doing several things and that was fine to start a program, but now we are getting to the stage that to compete for team victories we must score points and win events.”
Individually, McVey looks for his field athletes to pace the team with seniors Mathew Root of Baton Rouge, La., and Korinne Sauvage of Metairie, La., returning after school-record setting years in 2017. Junior Tatyana Bracero of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., senior Shyann Campfield of Grand Bay, Ala., and sophomore Amelia Bodet of New Orleans, La., will team with sophomore Mati DeLeon of Miami Beach, Fla., and sophomore Christina Pace of Murphy High School in Mobile to provide SHC a deep and effective throws squad.
In the jumps, Sauvage and Bodet look to have strong years in the women’s triple and long jumps while sophomore Abigail Cain is ready to handle the pole vault. Freshman Jacob Kirby of Semmes, Ala., will take on the men’s pole vault role and sophomore Levy Sanchez of Miami, Fla., will headline the long jump event.
Sophomores Athina Amanor from Murphy High School in Mobile and Landy Thomas of Hampton, Ga., join veterans senior Gabrielle Hantak of St. Louis, Mo., and senior Nicole Koval from Baton Rouge, La., in the women’s sprint and relay events. Freshman Isabella Kotval of Baton Rouge will make her debut in 2018 as well
as freshmen Kierstan Turpeau from New Iberia, La., Darby Rice of Slidell, La., Hannah Lafon of Baker High School in Mobile and Lucia Martinez of Miami. Other newcomers include freshmen Grace McCann of Chicago, Ill., Victoria Miller of Pearl River, La., Kimberly Atkinson of Trussville, Ala., Chambre Close of Edmund, Okla., Raquel Funches from Chicago, Haley Moore of Olive Branch, Miss., and Meghan Robinson of Mandeville, La. Adding experienced depth to the women’s sprints and middle distance will be Anastasia Walloga of Houston, Texas, sophomore Kylie Purdy of Trussville, senior Kori Lackey of Slidell, senior Elizabeth Kilpatrick of Crested Butte, Colo., senior Chelsea James of New Orleans, sophomore Amelia Hoffeld of Covington, La., and sophomore Lauren Fischer of Marietta, Ga.
The men’s middle distance is in the capable hands of sophomores Spencer Albright of Covington, La., and David Toups of Baton Rouge as well as junior Brenton Jennings of Red Level, Ala., while men’s sprints also look deep with junior Chibueze Emefo of Fayetteville, Ga., sophomore Payton Hudson of Madisonville, La., and junior Anton Jones III of Birmingham, Ala. Other Badger men’s runners include sophomore Joe Butler of Kirkwood, Mo., senior Aswan Duncan of Fairhope, Ala., freshman Matthew Fonseca, Jr., of Des Allemands, La., junior Dinard Garrett of Kalmar, Sweden, freshman Holland Griffin of Breaux Bridge, La., freshman Theron Hewlett of Spanish Fort, Ala., sophomore Malachi Jones of Birmingham, Ala., freshman William Kent of Spanish Fort, freshman Keylon Ledet of Breaux Bridge, freshman Zachary Petty from McGill-Toolen Catholic High School in Mobile, freshman Nick Saunchegraw of St. Louis, freshman Joshua Shelton of Baton Rouge, and sophomore Julian Sparks of Round Rock, Texas
The Badger Track & Field program has grown rapidly in its brief existence as a varsity sport on the Hill, but McVey is confident that even greater things lay ahead for the teams.
“This spring will be fun to be a part of,” he says.
“I think our athletes are ready to take us to the level we want to be. They have all been working very hard every time they take to practice or compete in an event to make this program the best it can be. This will be the year we start to see the fruits of those efforts.”

Craig McVey returns for his sixth season as the head coach of the Badger Track & Field teams after joining SHC as the programs’ first head coach in the summer of 2012. McVey came to Spring Hill after enjoying 15 years as the associate head track & field coach at the University of Albany where he was part of 28 America East Conference (AEC) championships and three Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America (IC4A) titles.
McVey, who also served as the head coach of the Albany men’s and women’s cross country teams, saw his men’s squad win the AEC title in 2011 while his women’s team won back-to-back ECAC University Division (I) titles in 2010 and 2011. Previously the men’s and women’s cross country coach at the College of Saint Rose (N.Y.) during the 1996-97 season, his women’s team won the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) championship and the men finishing as the runner-up with Golden Knight runners claiming both individual titles.
McVey began his collegiate coaching career in cross country and track & field at Kansas State in 1983. His athletes captured 18 Big Eight Conference titles and ranked as the top NCAA combined men’s and women’s program. He became the head men’s and women’s cross country and track coach at Hartwick College (N.Y.) in 1988 where his teams eclipsed 83 school records while producing 22 New York Collegiate individual champions during his tenure.
McVey earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Kansas State University. As an undergraduate student, McVey was a member of two Big Eight Conference indoor track & field championship teams and a Big Eight cross country championship team.
He and his wife, Bette, have four children: Luke, Kirsten, Maggie and Tyler.
Donald Cooper joined the Badger staff in October 2015. A 2012 graduate of Samford University in Birmingham, he competed in the Decathlon, High Jump and 400-meters while earning All-Southern Conference honors all four seasons of his career.

Cooper began his coaching career in 2012 as an Assistant Track & Field Coach at Neosho (Kan.) Community College where he coached Multi events along with Hurdles and Throws. He coached one National Championship winner in the women’s 60-meter hurdles and eight All-Americans in Throws and Heptathlon. In 2014, he was an Assistant Track Coach at the University of Montevallo where he coached Men’s and Women’s Throws, Jumps, Multis and Sprints.
