The Barter Family: A History of Dedication & Generosity
The story of Spring Hill College is deeply intertwined with the remarkable contributions of the Barter family—a lineage whose connection to the institution spans decades, reflecting a profound commitment to service, philanthropy, and community support. Their involvement as students, leaders, and benefactors has left an indelible mark on the College’s history. That generosity led to the renaming of New Hall to Viscardi Hall.
HONORING A LEGACY OF PHILANTHROPY
In recognition of the Barter family's philanthropy, New Hall has been renamed Viscardi Hall. This new name pays tribute to the highly-revered Jesuit, Father Christopher Viscardi, SJ.
Fr. Viscardi has devoted over 40 years of service to Spring Hill College. During his time, he has made memorable impressions on students, alumni, and the entire Mobile Catholic community. He served for several years as the Division Chair of Philosophy and Theology. He also devel-
oped the Certificate of Spiritual Direction program and a master’s course of study in theology. His commitment to pushing the College forward includes serving as President Pro-Tem of the College in 2018.
“After 45 years of teaching theology at Spring Hill and doing pastoral outreach for the Hispanic community, this was a complete surprise and also a great honor. I am grateful to all for the support and affection that has been shown to me by so many in the Spring Hill community, as well as friends and family from all around,” said Fr. Viscardi. Fr. Victor Ingalls, the Mobile Archdiocese's first Executive
Director for Multicultural Ministry, attended the Viscardi Hall Naming Ceremony during the week of homecoming. He shares more about Fr. Viscardi’s dedication to the Catholic community:
“I’ve been blessed to minister alongside him and see him serve the people of God. He really is the godfather of the Hispanic Ministry in our Diocese. He honestly started it in 1983, I believe, in a classroom here on campus. That was the first Spanish Mass that was celebrated in our Archdiocese and not only did he start Hispanic ministry but he has served faithfully in the community ever since. Now we have 22 different churches that have ministries and Mass in Spanish throughout the southern half of Alabama. It all started when Fr. Viscardi responded to that need right here on campus,” said Fr. Ingalls.
debate team and Phi Kappa Tau fraturnity. He graduated in 1968, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and engagement.
Mary Lou Barter joined the College community as she pursued a degree in education, further cementing her family’s bond with Spring Hill. She hailed from Louisville, Kentucky, where her family ties motivated her to attend Spring Hill. Her father, James W. Schwartzel, was a 1942 Spring Hill graduate.
Fr. Viscard’s service to the Hispanic Pastoral Ministry has been instrumental for the Archdiocese of Mobile and the greater Mobile community. The Spring Hill community is forever grateful for his service and for being a beacon of light on The Hill.
THE BEGINNINGS OF A LASTING CONNECTION
The Barter family's journey to Spring Hill College began in the 1960's. John Barter, a driven and promising student from Mobile, Alabama, began his academic journey at the College. The physics major was an active participant on campus with leadership skills that quickly became readily apparent. During John’s time at Spring Hill, he was a member of the
John and Mary Lou met on campus and were married in St. Joseph Chapel. They went on to have three children, John IV, David, and Mary.
“We will always think of The Hill as home. No matter where we live, this is a home in the present tense to us, not our used-to-be-home. We’ve moved 13 times in our corporate life, so we have a lot of former homes, but this will always be a central part of our lives,” said John Barter.
A LEGACY OF SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP
The Barter family's impact extended far beyond their time as students. John Barter continued to be actively involved in the College after graduation, serving on the Board of Trustees. His expertise and leadership played a crucial role

in guiding the College through various phases of development.
Mary Lou Barter’s contributions were equally significant. She served on the Board of Trustees for the College for nine years in the early 2000's. Her passion for education led her to increase scholarship funding for students on campus. She established a scholarship in honor of her father, James W. Schwartzel, to support deserving students pursuing higher education.
"We believe it was an incredible educational and personal experience being at Spring Hill. I attended Spring Hill because of my dad, and it was here that I met John. Many good things have happened to me because of my time there. I love my dad, and I wanted to establish a scholarship in his honor at Spring Hill. I believe students need a value-oriented education, and Spring Hill offers that. Many students rely on scholarships to attend, so the opportunity to give back and support them is a blessing," said Mary Lou Barter.
A COMMITMENT TO GIVING
The Barter family’s dedication to Spring Hill College is perhaps most vividly demonstrated by their philanthropy. Over the years, the family has made substantial contributions to various College initiatives, including scholarships and facility enhancements.
“What we say about Spring Hill is that we develop students in mind, body, and spirit. Any good school is going to develop students in mind and body. Jesuit schools or other religious schools do a wonderful job of developing the spirit. Spring Hill helps students to become people for others, people of service, people who give back to their communities and to the world. This college will always do that, so our goal is to help the College to remain vibrant and do as much as we can to continue accomplishing that goal,” said John Barter.
One of their most notable contributions is the Barter Student Center, a vital hub for student life and activities. The student center opened in May 2010 and was dedicated to Mary Lou and John Barter in October 2016. This state-of-the-art facility, made possible through the Barter family's generous support, serves as a central gathering place for students, offering spaces for social events, meetings, and campus activities. The Center has become a cornerstone of student engagement and community building at Spring Hill.
The Barter family has also played a crucial role in the development of the Nursing Simulation Laboratory. This cutting-edge facility opened in November of 2022 and provides nursing students with hands-on experience in a realistic clinical environment. Equipped with advanced simulation technology, the laboratory allows students to practice and refine their skills in a controlled setting. The lab significantly enhances their training and preparedness for real-world healthcare scenarios.
“I believe nursing is a special thing. When the project was finished, it was named after Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, at our request. It was also the recommendation of the Jesuits to name it after a Jesuit. St. Gonzaga never reached the culmination of becoming a Jesuit. He was only 23 years old
when he fell ill and died taking care of patients during the plague in Europe. I think it is an amazing story that exemplies nursing is more than only a profession. It's a wonderful profession but it is also a vocation, in terms of caring for human beings. Saint Aloysius Gonzaga was a wonderful example of that. So, we knew the nursing labs needed to be updated. We have a great nursing program and we also knew that with updates the nursing program could be a larger program for the College. It was something that came
from the heart for us,” said John Barter. The Barter family believes these enhancements and their commitment to supporting the campus will empower Spring Hill, giving it what it needs to continue to thrive for many years to come.
Spring Hill College Welcomes Father Phil Steele, SJ
Spring Hill College, a beacon of Jesuit education in the heart of Mobile, Alabama, is delighted to welcome back Father Phil Steele, SJ to campus.
Fr. Steele has returned to Spring Hill as the Chief Mission Officer and Superior of the Jesuit Community. His return to The Hill symbolizes not just a homecoming, but a continued commitment to the College’s Jesuit values and mission. As the College embarks on a journey to restore and strengthen its roots, Fr. Steele's return is both a significant and heartfelt development.
“It’s good to be back and reconnect with people that I knew from before and get to know a lot of new people. Any change is hard, when you are new in a job or in a role. It’s not all that comfortable to always ask all kinds of questions. And, there is a period of adjustment, but it’s also a blessing because you come to a new situation with fresh eyes and ears,” said Fr. Steele.
THE LEGACY OF FATHER PHIL STEELE, SJ
Fr. Phil Steele's association with Spring Hill College began in 2015 when he first joined the College community. Serving as
the campus minister, he quickly became a cornerstone of the spiritual and academic life at Spring Hill. His dedication to fostering a deeper understanding of Jesuit principles, coupled with his approachable and compassionate demeanor, earned him the respect and admiration of students, faculty, and alumni.
“We were very excited when Fr. Steele, who served as Rector of the Jesuit Community and Campus Minister from 20152017, returned to The Hill. His role as a valued member of our Board of Trustees since 2017 has kept him engaged in the challenges and opportunities for Spring Hill. He has brought a commitment to Jesuit education and formation in his role as Chief Mission Officer, as well as a wonderful sense of humor and many years of experience as a senior administrator,” said Spring Hill College President Mary H. Van Brunt.
Fr. Steele's previous role at Spring Hill was marked by his influential work in shaping the College’s mission-driven programs. He was instrumental in enhancing campus ministry, promoting social justice initiatives, and guiding students through their faith journeys. His leadership helped cultivate
an environment where academic excellence and spiritual growth coincide.
After a meaningful and impactful tenure, Fr. Steele moved on to serve in other capacities within the Jesuit community. His roles extended his influence beyond Spring Hill. His departure from campus was met with a profound sense of loss among those who had come to value his presence and contributions.
“The last seven years I’ve been working with elderly Jesuits, mostly. One of the things that has been rewarding for me is to be back on a campus where there is young life. I enjoy saying Mass to students. The 11 o’clock Mass on Sunday has a lot of Spring Hill alumni, friends, and neighborhood people so to be back is rewarding,” said Fr. Steele.
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
With Fr. Steele’s return to campus, he is excited to become involved in campus ministry, to inspire new initiatives and strengthen the College’s commitment to its Jesuit values. Father Steele looks forward to reinforcing the College's dedication to social justice, academic excellence, and personal
growth—principles that have long been at the heart of Spring Hill's mission.
“I look forward to continuing to develop new programs and opportunities. I look forward to getting to know more faculty and staff. I worked with a really powerful program called Ignatian Colleagues Program that a number of faculty and staff have participated in over the years. So I meet with them, those who have finished the program, because they’ve gotten an intensive experience of the spirituality of St. Ignatius and its history. I am going to rely on them to help me to develop programs and opportunities on campus,” said Fr. Steele.
For Fr. Steele, coming back to Spring Hill is a profound and emotional experience. It is a return to a place where he has felt a deep connection and a sense of purpose. The opportunity to contribute once again to Spring Hill’s growth and to be part of its evolving story is both an honor and a privilege.
“I am hoping that the school experiences a kind of revival in some way. I look forward to being part of helping the school to revive and grow stronger. There is no turning back the clock, you can’t return to what the school was before but I think helping to envision what Spring Hill will become, how it will change, and how it will rest on the foundation that’s been built for almost 200 years is the goal. It is going to change so that is daunting but also exciting to be a part of.
At my age, I don’t think I am going to leave this huge personal legacy but I am part of a bigger effort,” said Fr. Steele.
As Spring Hill College continues its journey of renewal and progress, the return of Fr. Phil Steele marks a new chapter filled with promise. His leadership and vision will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the future of the College, ensuring that its Jesuit heritage remains a vibrant and guiding force in the years ahead.
THE DEPARTURE OF FATHER BOB POIRIER, SJ
As Spring Hill College prepared for Fr. Steele's return, the community also bid a fond farewell to Father Bob Poirier, S.J. His departure marks the end of a significant era. Having served as the College’s Vice President of Mission and
Identity, he played a pivotal role in navigating Spring Hill through a period of transformation and growth.
“During his time at Spring Hill College, Fr. Bob co-led the Mission Priority Examen and developed and implemented mission orientation for faculty and staff. He also developed a successful Board formation retreat, strongly supported the Ignatian Colleagues Program and Ignatian Seminars on campus. Over the past 18 months, he has been a friend, confidant, and a teacher about the Jesuit charism to me. He will be missed,” said President Van Brunt.
Fr. Poirier’s tenure was characterized by his dedication to the College’s academic programs, expanding its outreach, and reinforcing its Jesuit identity. His efforts in enhancing student life, promoting diversity, and fostering community engagement were hallmarks of his leadership. Fr. Poirier said he will always treasure his time spent on campus.
“I will always cherish the deep investment in the mission by students, faculty, staff, alumni, and trustees. I will miss the

Fr. Poirier’s impact on Spring Hill College was profound, and his contributions will be remembered with gratitude and respect.
“Forever and a Day”Where it All Began
Marita J. Fox and John Gallagher’s story began in 1966 at Spring Hill College. Their meeting quickly blossomed into a deep and inseparable connection. John often referred to Marita as his college sweetheart and best friend. They married two years later at Spring Hill. They would go on to celebrate 50 years of marriage on August 24, 2018—each day of which they cherished with the same dedication captured in the inscription on their wedding rings: “Forever and a Day.”
Marita graduated from Spring Hill in 1967 with a degree in English, and John followed with his own graduation in 1968. Later, in 1982, John earned an MBA in Finance from the University of Miami. A voracious reader, a fantastic dancer, and a creative home chef, John’s talents were many. His sense of humor and generosity of spirit endeared him to both strangers and lifelong friends alike. He was also deeply committed to helping those less fortunate, especially the homeless, wherever he lived.
John’s career spanned the building industry, where he worked as an executive with Pulte Corporation before retiring at 55. Undeterred by
retirement, he founded Pinnacle Consulting, a privately owned firm specializing in international building companies. John’s professional success was matched by his personal qualities—a devoted Catholic, proud of his Irish heritage, and deeply patriotic. He was a man of character, intelligence and compassion, always giving back to those in need and nurturing close relationships with his family.
John’s love for Marita, and the life they built together, was one of his greatest sources of pride. Their family included two children—daughter Kara and son John— and three grandsons. His devotion to family was evident in everything he did, and this bond with his loved ones became the true measure of his legacy.
After John’s passing, when reflecting on their shared life, Marita knew she wanted to honor John’s memory in a meaningful way that would be linked to the place where their journey began: Spring Hill College. In 2021, Marita chose to honor John’s legacy by dedicating a memorial plaque at Spring Hill. The plaque, located at the statue of Mary near St. Joseph Chapel, commemorates not only their time together but also their faith that was central to their lives. Marita recalled the many hours she and John spent sitting by the statue, talking, studying, and praying.
Encapsulating the love and respect that defined John’s relationships, the plaque was completed and dedicated in August of 2022. Marita often reflects that if John were asked how he would like to be remembered, he would have said without hesitation, “Not my career, but my devotion to my family.”
WALSH HALL:
A Chronicle of History & Innovation
1954 TO 2025
In the heart of Spring Hill College’s picturesque campus, Walsh Hall stood for decades as a monument to both tradition and progress. Its storied past reflects a chapter in the College's history that blends academic ambition with the spirit of community.
The Birth of Walsh Hall
TThe inception of Walsh Hall traces back to 1945 when Spring Hill, driven by a vision to accommodate a growing student body and enhance campus facilities, embarked on a transformative journey. Designed by the renowned architect duo Martin and Barnes, Walsh Hall was envisioned as a modern, multi-purpose building that would serve as a residence hall for students and a venue for College events. With its elegant brick facade and spacious interiors, it became a symbol of Spring Hill’s commitment to providing a robust educational environment.
The building was named in honor of Father William J. Walsh, a revered Jesuit priest who was instrumental in the College’s development during the 20th century. Under his guidance, Spring Hill College expanded its academic programs and reinforced its mission of fostering intellectual and personal growth among its students.
The top image is one of the first documented photographs of Walsh Hall. The bottom picture is a current picture of Walsh Hall which is set to be demolished in early 2025.
REMEMBERING WALSH
When a flashback post was made on Spring Hill College’s Facebook page about the closure of Walsh Hall, alumni and former employees from near and far shared their fondest memories of the building:
“Stayed here during the summers for Upward Bound. Fell in love with SHC and decided to pursue my college degree here. Wouldn’t trade it for the world! Go Badgers! #hillyeah”

“So many memories my freshman year! Hand drum jam sessions out front, shoe/ jewelry beverage mixers, visits from my sister at Ole Miss, friends crashing on the floor of my dorm room, getting ready for TKE parties and being a TKE sweetheart, dance team days, all things fun!”

THE LIFE OF WALSH HALL
For nearly five decades, Walsh Hall was more than just a building; it was a vibrant hub of student life. It housed up to 200 students, offering them a comfortable and engaging environment that was central to their college experience. The hall was a place where friendships blossomed, late-night study sessions occurred, and countless Spring Hill traditions took root.
Its spacious common areas were the setting for spirited debates, cultural events, and moments of camaraderie. Walsh Hall was more than just a residence—it was a community cornerstone, deeply embedded in the daily rhythm of campus life.
THE TRANSITION AND CLOSURE
“We lived there our sophomore year. I loved how close we were to everything! Maura and I painted our room blue. She stepped in the paint - we had one blue footprint to the restroom for weeks that year!”
Maureen Theresa Elementary Education Major CLASS OF 1995
As the years progressed, however, the demands of modern education and technological advancements necessitated a re-evaluation of the College’s facilities. By 2013, Walsh Hall was gradually phased out, as its structure began to show signs of aging and newer, more specialized facilities became essential to meet the evolving needs of the student body.
The closure of Walsh Hall marked the end of an era, but it also paved the way for a new chapter of innovation and growth. The College community bid farewell to the beloved building with a mixture of nostalgia and anticipation for the future.
A NEW ERA: THE HEALTH AND SCIENCE INNOVATION CENTER
Spring Hill College is on the brink of an exciting transformation. Scheduled to break ground in 2025, the new Health and Science Innovation Center will rise where Walsh Hall once stood. This state-of-the-art facility represents a leap forward in the College's mission to integrate cutting-edge technology and scientific research with its educational programs.
The development of the new center has garnered significant support from various entities. A generous grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has provided an impressive $36,615,031 in funding, with 5% of the total financed through non-governmental sources. Additionally, the City of Mobile and Mobile County each contributed $750,000 to aid in the development of this groundbreaking facility. This collaborative funding effort underscores the importance of community and governmental support in advancing educational and healthcare initiatives.
The new center will be a vision of progress, designed to foster innovation in health and science through collaborative research, advanced learning opportunities, and community engagement. It will house laboratories, simulation centers, and interactive learning spaces. These additions will set the stage for future breakthroughs and enrich the student experience at Spring Hill College.

LOOKING FORWARD
The Health and Science Innovation Center promises to honor the legacy of Walsh Hall by continuing to build on the College's traditions of excellence and community spirit. While the familiar walls of Walsh Hall will be missed, the new center will embody a forward-thinking vision that aligns with the evolving landscape of higher education and healthcare.
As the campus prepares for this new chapter, there is a palpable sense of excitement and optimism. The legacy of Walsh Hall lives on through the advanced opportunities that the Health and Science Innovation Center will bring, ensuring that Spring Hill College remains at the forefront of education and innovation.

A Garden of Reflection
The Class of 1973 spearheaded the creation of the Meditation Garden located between the tennis courts and Deignan Hall (Chemistry Building). This serene space features an eight-foot copper wind-driven sculpture as its centerpiece. The project organizers, Paul Voitier and Margaret Parker Hutson, held a student competition to design the centerpiece.
The centerpiece design created by Marley Charles truly captures the spirit of cura personalis using Spring Hill’s iconic fleur de lis, which represents the embracing arms of the campus and the strong sense of faith felt in the atmosphere.
“Great gratitude goes to our local sculptor Craig Riches, who specializes in wind-driven sculptures. Craig did a masterful job in rendering Marley’s design
into a mesmerizing kinetic piece that interprets Marley’s concept while incorporating his own unique style. It turned out to be what I think is a brilliant collaboration,” said Hutson.
In the garden, there is a plaque with all the names of people who donated to the Meditation Garden effort. Project orga nizers express gratitude to those who donated and hope this gift of love inspires others to pay it forward.
“This was a total class effort. One of the most gratifying things I recall was the large number of early adopters – before we even broke ground - who donated to the project almost immediately based on blind faith, love for our College, and their Spring Hill experience 50 years ago. That was the building block we needed – and it worked. We even had donations from other class years. That was special. Our hopes are that other alumni recognize the profound value of our Jesuit education and seize the opportunity to give back to the College,” said Voitier.
“It was an honor to help bring such a heartfelt vision to reality – not only for the Class of ’73, but for the entire college. Margaret was no doubt the engine that made things happen during the last 12 months. I thought it was important to establish a basic line of communication using progress reports, photos, and videos for our classmates, giving them a sense of owner ship of the project. Their ongoing support and encouragement fueled our fire,” said Voitier. During the 2024 homecoming celebration, the College held a formal dedication ceremony for the garden. With a crowd gathered, to see the completed version of the project, the garden was blessed.
crossed this campus. It is here that we received the emerging cornerstones of what it is to be a part of something outside ourselves, to lift another when he is down, to speak up for one who has no voice. Also, to revel in the joy of a triumph not just our own, and to give when we are not the sole benefactors. Spring Hill magically, mystically fosters these lifelong values that ultimately bring us back here to return the precious gifts we acquired so long ago. And so, the Class of ’73 humbly offers this giveback to present to future Spring Hillians with lifelong gratitude, and the desire that this bloom of hope serves as a reminder of all that can be forged and sent forth from spending even a little time on this hallowed Hill,” said Hutson.
Hutson explains how special the Meditation Garden is and what it really means for her to give back in this way. “Our deepest gratitude goes to Spring Hill College! It is here that we received the imprints that made us into a body of people whose connections go beyond the brief time we criss-
Spring Hill College is elated to have this new heartfelt gift on campus. It is the College’s hope that the Meditation Garden will be a space of tranquility, serenity, and comfort to students for years to come.
