VOLLEYBALL PREVIEW 2017

Spring Hill College (SHC) volleyball head coach Peggy Martin welcomes back a team composed of eight sophomores and six freshmen out of a roster of 20 student-athletes to start the 2017 season, but she is confident that her players are ready to meet the challenge ahead. “We are already working well together,” she says. “When replacing four starters you have your work cut out for you. Two of our seniors last year were four-year starters on the outside, so our experience in that position is lacking, but overall I am very pleased with the competition at every position and everyone is working hard to pull it all together.”
The Badgers lost three of their top six scorers in 2016 to graduation. Still, Martin sees her returning players as more than equal to the challenge of making up those lost points. “On the outside, sophomores Payton Gidney (Grapevine, Texas) and Taylor Hurst (Gulf Shores, Ala.) have been handling the bulk of the swings and doing well,” she says. “Freshman Allison Weimer (Covington, La.) is also looking very good while trying new positions. She literally can play them all and we love her versatility.
Sophomore Sarah Senft (Spring Grove, Pa.) was our “go-to” on the right side last year as a freshmen and has had a great pre-season.”
Feeding the scorers this year will be incoming transfer junior Hannah Fromdahl of Mobile, Ala., who comes to the Badgers after an All-Panhandle Conference career at Pensacola State College in Florida and sophomore Emmarose Neibert of Arnold, Mo., who saw action in 44 sets as a freshman. Junior Grace Herrington from Gainesville, Fla., will also see time as the SHC signal caller as the season progresses. Offensively, Martin is not quite satisfied, but she likes the way her team is
fighting in the early stages of the season. “Our defense is definitely ahead of our offense with sophomores Cassidi Sterrett (Lee’s Summit, Mo.) and Brittany Bilotti (Miami, Fla.) along with red shirt junior Randi De’Armitt (New Orleans, La.) leading the way,” she says. “If we want to be a great defense then our blocking still needs to improve and that usually takes time to develop.”
Overall, Martin sees this year’s team featuring a deep bench particularly at the net and on defense. “We have a lot of depth in the middle with our only senior Katelyn Bobinger (Mobile) leading the way,” she says. “Transfer junior Morgan Eiland (Mobile) is holding down the other middle blocking position, but competition from freshmen Mary Keller (Kansas City, Mo.) and junior Emily Greim (McKinney, Texas) and a slew of other middles will continue. Setting is a work in progress with Neibert and Fromdahl sharing the load in a 6-2 system. Senft, Weimer or sophomore Emily Sullivan (Chicago, Ill.) will play the right side positions while Sterrett really looks good at the libero spot with De’Armitt at the defensive specialist position.”
Adding to the Badger weapons in reserve will be sophomore middle hitter Patty Blood of Cincinnati, Ohio, and red shirt freshman Angele McClain from New Orleans as well as freshmen Paige Pappas and Ryann Horkavy from Chicago along with Rebecca Moore of Grand Bay, Ala. With such a young team and so many new faces, Martin sees the challenge this year as being how quickly her team can come together as a cohesive unit. “We will really only have two returning upperclassmen on the court to start the season which is a huge challenge in our sport,” she says. “We will make mistakes, but work very hard to grow up quickly.”

Dr.
Peggy
Martin - Head Coach - 8th season

Mobile Sports Hall of Fame member Dr. Peggy Martin is in her eighth season as the head volleyball coach at Spring Hill College. In 2011, 2012 and 2013, she directed SHC to three consecutive NAIA National Tournament appearances for the first time in program history. The Badgers also won their second consecutive Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) regular season championship in 2013 with a perfect 14-0 mark and were the SSAC Tournament for the first time in school history. As she begins her 42nd season as a collegiate head coach, Martin opens 2016 with a career record of 1,282-336-8 (.791) including a 218-55 (.799) record with the Badgers.
Martin holds the most wins in the history of NCAA Division II after 33 consecutive winning seasons at the University of Central Missouri where she compiled a 1,064-281-8 record. At the end of the 2008 season she retired as the Jennies’ coach and returned to her hometown of Mobile, but the opportunity to coach at SHC was too tempting to pass up.
Over 33 seasons at UCMO, Martin never suffered a losing season, won 25 matches in 31 consecutive seasons and won or shared 19 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association titles. Her teams made a record 25 consecutive NCAA Div. II Tournament appearances, reached the “Elite Eight” six times and finished as the National Runner-up in 1987. She has won 22 Coach of the Year Awards including the 1987 NCAA Division II National Coach of Year Award. In college, she played at Indiana University and led the women’s basketball team to three consecutive national tournament berths while winning four letters in softball and three letters in field hockey. She completed her bachelor’s degree at IU in 1972 and earned a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro in 1974. In 1980, she completed her doctorate in physical education at Indiana University.
Shawn Taylor - Assistant Coach – 2 seasons
Shawn Taylor joined the SHC staff in 2015 after three seasons with the University of South Alabama (USA) Jaguars under head coach Amy Hendrichovsky where he helped develop three all-conference student-athletes including the 2013 Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Freshman of the Year Mechell Daniel. In 2017, Taylor accepted the head coach position of the SHC Beach Volleyball team and led the Badgers to the first winning season in the three-year history of the program with a 17-16 record.

Before his tenure at USA, Taylor spent two seasons as the top assistant at Arkansas State University (ASU) under head coach Justin Ingram. In his two seasons in Jonesboro, the Red Wolves posted an overall record of 38-22 and a 23-9 mark in the league. The Red Wolves finished 2010 as co-champions of the SBC West Division with an 11-5 conference record and won an outright division title in 2011 with 21 overall wins and a 12-4 conference mark.
Taylor earned his master’s degree in college student personnel from KSU in 2006 and his bachelor’s degree in liberal studies from Graceland in 2004 where he played for the Yellowjackets from 1999-2002.
