CHEER AND DANCE PREVIEW 2017-18

The Spring Hill College (SHC) cheer and dance teams begin a new era in 2017-18 as Alyssa Paesano has assumed the mantle of head coach for both programs. Paesano joined the Badgers in the summer of 2017 from the Marist College Red Foxes in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., after spending her cheer career at the University of Connecticut.

Paesano is pleased with the dedication and hard work of her Badger squads since her arrival on campus. “Our student-athletes have been putting in a lot of time and effort to get ready for the season this year,” she said. “The teams have a great attitude and are really looking forward to get out on the court and in front of the crowds again.”

The cheer team is a relatively young squad with only two seniors on the roster, but it also has several experienced veterans. Seniors Emma Gross from Orange, Calif., and Summer Soltis from Cleveland, Ohio, have been with the team since it was advanced from club status four years ago and their experience will be a vital component in the upcoming campaign. The junior class welcomes back Randi Evans of Semmes, Ala., Sumyr Thames of Saraland, Ala., and Courtney Hutchinson from Birmingham, Ala., along with newcomer Caroline Cusick from Cincinnati, Ohio. Sophomore Badgers include returners Sydney Caudill of Madison, Ala., Branna Hokanson from Semmes, Eden Marble from St. Luke’s Episcopal School in Mobile, Dalaney Naremore of Covington,

La., and Essence Williams from New Orleans, La. The team added to its strengths with the addition of freshmen Annie Bojan and Jacee Brija from Chicago, Ill., as well as Jasmine Huynh from Faith Academy in Mobile and Gloria Utterback of Ocean Springs, Miss.

Assisting the ladies with the lifts and power moves this year will be freshmen Nolan Buzbee out of Mobile Christian School and Robert Vought of Spanish Fort, Ala.

Paesano has high expectations for the 2017-18 SHC dance team. Helping her reach those goals will be four returning team members including senior Allie May from Eureka, Mo., and junior Camryn Nethken from Prairieville, La., along with sophomores Emily Alexis of Hattiesburg, Miss., and Alicia Cleveland of Dayton, Ohio. The Badgers welcome two dynamic newcomers in sophomore Carlie Graham of Ocean Springs and freshman Hannah Gordon from Semmes.

Overall, Paesano looks for both her teams to enjoy excellent years in 2017-8 and says she is most excited about seeing the teams perform at basketball games.

“They’ve gone to camp and love to compete, but basketball is their true element and where they really get to perform, she says. The teams will get their first opportunity to shine on Thursday, November 16, when the Badger women’s basketball opens the season at home versus Delta State University and the men host Pensacola Christian College in the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
