The Spring Hill College (SHC) cheer and dance teams begin 2016-17 with a new sense of determination. Carrie Clayton returns as the Spirit Program Coordinator in her fourth year with the Badgers after directing the cheer team to a 7th place finish out of nine teams in the 2016 Small Coed Division II classification at the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) Nationals held at the Walt Disney World Resort.
The cheer team has numerous returners including senior Jasmin Pizer from Baton Rouge, La., along with juniors Emma Gross from Orange, Calif., Holly Hubenak from Austin, Texas, and Summer Soltis from Cleveland, Ohio. The sophomore class welcomes back Julie Dobbs of Slocomb, Ala., Randi Evans of Semmes, Ala., and Ashley Zamudio from McGill-Toolen Catholic High School in Mobile.
Adding to their strengths, the Badgers picked up several exciting new members in sophomores Sydney Caudill of Madison, Ala., Courtney Hutchinson from Birmingham, Ala., and Brookelyn Woodall of Jemison, Ala., while the freshman class includes Branna Hokanson from Semmes, Eden Marble from St. Luke’s Episcopal School in Mobile, Dalaney Naremore of Covington, La., Sumyr Thames of Saraland, Ala., and Essence Williams from New Orleans, La. Assisting the ladies with the lifts and power moves this year will be senior Lane Brunson and junior Bernard Crandle both from
Murphy High School in Mobile joined by sophomore Tempel Viti of Old Mill Creek, Ill., with freshman Joseph Mohr of Irvington, Ala.
Clayton has set the goal of “performing to the best of their ability and competing at Nationals” for the 2016-17 SHC dance team. Helping her reach that goal will be four returning team members including seniors Darian Price from Carencro, La., and Channi Zirlott of Irvington, Ala., together with junior Allie May from Eureka, Mo., and sophomore Camryn Nethken from Prairieville, La. The newcomers include senior Mary Grace Pollet of Baton Rouge, La., who comes to the squad after three seasons with the Badger golf team and five dynamic freshmen in Emily Alexis of Hattiesburg, Miss., Alicia Cleveland of Dayton, Ohio, Morgan Jemison of Saraland, Abby Knight of Madisonville, La., and Kayla Ryan from Franklin, Tenn.
Clayton looks for both her teams to enjoy excellent years in 2016-17 and says she’s most excited about, “seeing the teams at basketball games. They’ve gone to camp and basketball is their true element where they get to perform.” The teams will get their first opportunity to shine on Friday, November 11, when the Badger women’s basketball opens the season at home versus the University of West Alabama Tigers in the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
