WELCOME

FROM THE RECTOR

The

Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata

We’re so glad you’ve joined us at Saint Michael today. We’d love to get to know you better, so please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found on this page or in the pew back in front of you. Our Welcome Team members are in the hallways today to help you with anything you need.

Over the next two months, please consider impacting our community through I Believe In Angels, a Christmas program that invites all of us to sponsor angels (children and seniors) at Jubilee, or through Heart of Giving, Christmas cards that provide tangible benefits for Mission and Outreach initiatives. You’re also invited to sponsor flowers for our Christmas services with a donation of any amount. Please make donations by December 12 to be included in the Christmas Altar Flowers Memorial bulletin.

This year, we’re asking all our members to commit to their discipleship life through pledges of financial and service support. Your annual financial support deepens your discipleship commitment and helps us expand our missional impact inside and outside our walls. Additionally, your annual service pledge roots you in the life of our church in a very tangible way! Please also grab a Sunday News handout if you haven’t already and join us for our special programming whenever you can.

As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. Worshiping, learning, and giving together help us grow closer to who God created us to be, and you’re part of that work. May God bless you today and every day, and I hope to see you again very soon!

Sietze de Vries (b. 1973) is a Dutch organist renowned for his improvisations in Renaissance and Baroque styles, particularly on chorale, psalm, and Genevan hymn melodies. In today's prelude, de Vries uses the hymn tune "Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten" as the thematic basis for a French Suite consisting of five movements: Chorale, Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, and Gigue.

The Gospel (standing) Luke 21:5-19

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

When some were speaking about the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and gifts dedicated to God, Jesus said, “As for these things that you see, the days will come when not one stone will be left upon another; all will be thrown down.” They asked him, “Teacher, when will this be, and what will be the sign that this is about to take place?” And he said, “Beware that you are not led astray; for many will come in my name and say, ‘I am he !’ and, ‘The time is near!’ Do not go after them. When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; for these things must take place first, but the end will not follow immediately.” Then he said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and plagues; and there will be dreadful portents and great signs from heaven. But before all this occurs, they will arrest you and persecute you; they will hand you over to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors because of my name. This will give you an opportunity to testify. So make up your minds not to prepare your defense in advance; for I will give you words and a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, by relatives and friends; and they will put some of you to death. You will be hated by all because of my name. But not a hair of your head will perish. By your endurance you will g ain your souls.”

Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Sermon (seated) The Reverend Kenneth H. Brannon

The Nicene Creed (standing)

All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

A Jubilant Song

Mary Lynn Lightfoot

Cantate Domino canticum novum.

Sing to the Lord a new jubilant song!

Cantate Domino canticum novum omnis terra.

Lift up a jubilant song and make joyful noise!

Cantate Domino canticum novum.

Sing to the Lord a new jubilant song!

Cantate Domino canticum novum omnis terra.

Sing to the Lord all the earth! O, sing!

Cantate Domino.

- Traditional Latin and the Psalms

This piece reflects her gift for writing music that is both musically engaging and rewarding for singers, combining rhythmic vitality with clear melodic lines and a positive, spirited message.

Postlude

Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten, BWV 642

Johann Sebastian Bach

"Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten" appears near the end of J.S. Bach's Orgelbüchlein (Little Organ Book). Beneath the chorale melody, a lively anapestic rhythm (two short notes followed by one long) repeats consistently— not through intricate counterpoint, but through flowing, harmonious parallel thirds, creating a brisk and steady pace.
