SAINT MICHAEL

and All Angels Episcopal Church

The Fourth Sunday After The Epiphany February 1, 2026

9 AM TRADITIONAL CHURCH

WELCOME

FROM THE RECTOR

The Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata

Happy Epiphany! We’re so glad you’ve joined us at Saint Michael today. We’d love to get to know you better, so please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found on this page or in the pew back in front of you. Our Welcome Team members are in the hallways today to help you with anything you need.

Tonight at 4 p.m. in the church, join our talented young choristers for a service of Choral Evensong. Our choristers will be the resident Evensong Choir at St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, this summer, and these regular services help them prepare for such a significant honor and responsibility. Being present for them is a gift. And please save the date: Ash Wednesday is February 18 and we will have services throughout the day.

In addition to worship, the Women of Saint Michael will host their bi-annual Gala and Fundraiser: Stars and Light this Friday, February 6 at 6 p.m. at the Fairmont Hotel, and the deadline to purchase tickets is tomorrow! This spectacular fundraising gala, benefiting the most vulnerable in the Dallas community, will bring together our Saint Michael community to celebrate the spirit of giving while enjoying dinner, dancing, and the opportunity to participate in live and silent auctions.

Please pick up a Sunday News handout if you haven’t already and join us for our special programming whenever you can. As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. Worshiping, learning, and giving together help us grow closer to who God created us to be, and you’re part of that work. May God bless you today and every day, and I hope to see you again very soon!

The Collect of the Day (standing)

Celebrant Let us pray.

Hymn S 278

Almighty and everlasting God, you govern all things both in heaven and on earth: Mercifully hear the supplications of your people, and in our time grant us your peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Tightly woven 32ndnote scales, suspensions, dramatic octave pedal effects, tension-building through repetition, and appoggiatura harmonies characterize this movement. The opening theme is followed by contrasting fugal episodes. The complex ritornello structure makes this prelude structurally similar to other mature organ works by Johann Sebastian Bach, such as the preludes from BWV 548 and BWV 546.

Children ages three through eight are invited to meet a member of our ministry staff by the pulpit to be escorted to children’s chapel; they will return to the congregation following the Peace.

Chanted by the

Hear what the LORD says: Rise, plead your case before the mountains, and let the hills hear your voice. Hear, you mountains, the controversy of the LORD, and you enduring foundations of the earth; for the LORD has a controversy with his people, and he will contend with Israel. “O my people, what have I done to you? In what have I wearied you? Answer me! For I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and redeemed you from the house of slavery; and I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. O my people, remember now what King Balak of Moab de vised, what Balaam son of Beor answered him, and what happened from Shittim to Gilgal, that you may know the saving acts of the LORD. With what shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burntofferings, with calves a year old? Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with tens of thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I g ive my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?” He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

Lector The Word of the Lord.

People Thanks be to God.

The Psalm (seated) Psalm 15

LORD, who may dwell in your tabernacle? * who may abide upon your holy hill? Whoever leads a blameless life and does what is right, * who speaks the truth from his heart. There is no guile upon his tongue; he does no evil to his friend; * he does not heap contempt upon his neighbor. In his sight the wicked is rejected, * but he honors those who fear the LORD. He has sworn to do no wrong * and does not take back his word.

Choir to a psalm setting by David Hurd.

He does not give his money in hope of gain, * nor does he take a bribe against the innocent. Whoever does these things * shall never be overthrown.

Sequence Hymn (standing, sung by all)

“Of the Father’s love begotten” Divinum mysterium Hail, thou Judge of souls departed! hail, thou King of them that live! on the Father’s throne exalted none in might with thee may strive; who at last in judgement coming sinners from thy face shalt drive, evermore and evermore!

The Gospel (standing) Matthew 5:1-12

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.

People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Sermon (seated) The Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata

The Nicene Creed (standing)

All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic

Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Hymn S 128

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin

“Exceeding Glad” is the joyful second movement of Handel’s coronation anthem The King Shall Rejoice, composed for the coronation of King George II in 1727. This brief choral movement reflects the celebratory spirit of the larger work, offering a bright and exultant expression of praise. Its uplifting character and ceremonial grandeur make it a memorable moment within one of Handel’s most festive royal compositions.

All baptized persons of any age regardless of their denomination and tradition are welcome to share in the banquet of the Lord’s Supper.

Here a Proper Preface is sung or said on all Sundays, and on other occasions as appointed.

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and g ave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

All We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these g ifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Saint Michael and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread (kneeling, sung by all) Hymn S 154

“Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia”

Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

Communion Hymn (sung by all) Hymn 656

“Blest are the pure in heart” Franconia

All are invited to come forward to the Communion rail at the direction of our ushers. Stand or kneel at the rail as you are able, and receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, clasp your hands in front of you with your palms down. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat.

Will Todd’s “The Call of Wisdom” is a serene and uplifting choral work originally written for the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. Set to a reflective text about seeking guidance and inner truth, the piece features warm harmonies and gentle, flowing melodies. Its contemplative character and message of spiritual wisdom make it especially meaningful in a church setting, offering a moment of quiet reflection and prayerful stillness.

Communion Anthem (sung by the Saint Michael Choir)

The Call of Wisdom Will Todd

Lord of wisdom, lord of truth, lord of justice, lord of mercy. Walk beside us down the years, ‘till we see you in your glory.

Striving to attain the heights. Turning in a new direction. Entering a lonely place. Welcoming a friend or stranger.

I am here, I am with you. I have called, do you hear me?

I am here, I am here, I am with you.

Silver is of passing worth (Silver), gold is not of constant value. Jewels sparkle for a while. What you long for is not lasting.

I am here, I am with you. I have called, do you hear me?

I am here, I am here. I am with you.

Rulers govern under me. With my insight and my wisdom. Those who know me know my love. Those who seek me find their answer.

I am here, I am with you. I have called, do you hear me?

I am here, I am here. I am with you.

The Post-Communion Prayer (kneeling, spoken by all)

Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Blessing (kneeling)

The Dismissal (standing)

Deacon Let us go forth in the name of Christ. People Thanks be to God.

Departing Procession (standing, sung by all) Hymn 556 v. 1-3

Postlude

Fugue in B Minor, BWV 544/II Johann Sebastian Bach

The fugue takes a more rational approach than this morning’s prelude. The fugue’s seemingly simple theme is heard in many variations as Johann Sebastian Bach guides the listener through different keys. At the Golden Mean—a mathematical proportion found in nature, art, and music—a second theme is introduced, adding both dramatic effect and complexity.
