Football,Friendships andLuca’sSpecial GoalkeepingJourney

When Luca Shaw asked his dad to take him to an AFC Telford United game in 2023, it was the start of a journey that’s inspired him to explore new journeys in his education, health andambitionsforthefuture.

The family, including older brother Louis, had been introduced to the club a few months earlier by AFC Telford United Foundation’s AFC Kicks sessions, held at the SEAH Stadium in Wellington.

Immediately, Luca realised he had found a safe place. Diagnosed with autism a few years earlier, he began studying at Southall School in Dawley and thrived in its inclusive environment.

But football offered something more. It was an opportunity to find new friends, discover new interests and overall, spend the familytimewithhisdadandbrotherthathecraved.

His first season watching AFC Telford United was a harsh lesson in the realities of football life. It ended in play-off final heartbreakagainstLeamington, butthesparkwaslit.

Lucas’s inspiration was AFC Telford United goalkeeper Brandon Hall and straight away, he bought his first set of gloves. That summer was spent training in a park in Priorslee, putting into practiceskillshehadwatchedonYouTube.

After months of searching, he was given the opportunity to train with Telford Town’s Under-15s team. Working with the club’sgoalkeepercoaches, hecontinuedtoshowpromise.

But it wasn’t enough. When the new school term began, his PE teacher at Southall School, Rob Davies, saw something in the 14-year-old and gave him the opportunity to train and play with theschoolteam.

Mr Davies knew that having spent the summer falling in love with football, Luca was ready to continue his sporting journey andplaycompetitivelyforthefirsttime.

That season ended in remarkable success, when the school was invited to represent Shrewsbury Town at the FA Premier League Festival in West Bromwich. With Luca playing in goal, theywonthetitle.

Football, Friendships and Luca’s Special Goalkeeping Journey

Luca also began training with AFC Telford United’s Pan-Disability team, which had recently begun coaching sessions on Friday evenings. Playing against team-mates of all ages, he fitted in and madenewfriendsstraightaway.

Luca also had help and support from Madeley Sports, who gave him vital coaching advice during theirsessionsatTCATonMondayevenings.

He played games against Kidderminster Harriers and is looking forward to facing Shrewsbury Town andotherlocalteamsthroughout2026.

That hard work also saw him make his mainstream football debut for Telford Town Under-16s. They were one of only a few clubs to look beyond his autism and give him the opportunity to develop at hisownplace.

Just a few weeks later he earned the Man of the Match award for his performance in his first league gameandtoday, heisaregularfixtureintheteam.

Luca’s love of AFC Telford United also paid dividends last summer, when the club achieved promotion to the National League North with a gripping play-off win over Kettering. Tears on the pitchfollowed.

But it’s not just on the pitch the Luca has been inspired. Once he leaves Southall School in July, he is looking to attend Crossbar Coaching’s Alternative ProvisionatLilleshallNationalSportsCentre.

Not only that, but his love of football has led him to eat healthily and exercise regularly. All in the name ofplayingingoalatthehighestlevelpossible.

It’s a journey that started with a single visit to watch AFC Telford United and with new friendships in football developing all the time, it isn’t stopping anytimesoon.

Telford’sPan DisabilityFootball GoesfromStrength toStrength

AFC Telford United Foundation’s pan-disability programme has gone from strength to strength since it was launched in October 2023.

Up to 50 players in the Under-12s, Under-16s and Over-16s age groups train every Friday evening at the SEAH Stadium in Wellington.

The programme has also attracted sponsorship from 7 Elite Academy in Liverpool, which runs youth football and education programmes acrosstheUK,USAandSouthAfrica.

So far, teams have played a series of friendlies against Kidderminster Harriers, with further games against National League clubs and even adisabilityfootballfestivalplannedfor2026.

Sessions are led by experienced Head Coach Stuart Fletcher, winner of the disability pathway coach of the year at the Shropshire FA grassroots hero awards in 2025, alongside a fully-qualified team of staffandcoaches.

Stuart said, “We believe that football is a fantastic sport and it should be available to everyone, regardless of disability, skill or past experience.

“All we ask is that players turn up willing to learn and enjoy themselves! Sessions are planned to make sure we generate a love offootballandteamworkineverysingleplayer.

“When we launched this programme in 2023, we had eight players at the first training session, but almost straight away word spread and numbers picked up really quickly.

“Since then, we have seen players come and go, which is absolutely fine. They key for us is that everyone enjoys playing football.

“Our first game against Kidderminster was a great opportunity for the players to put intopracticethehardworktheyhavebeen showingattraining.

“Everyone is particularly thankful to 7 Elite Academy for sponsoring our shirts. It is great to see the players walk out in the samecoloursastheAFCTelfordUnitedfirst team.”

The team’s new kit was launched after 7 EliteAcademy, basedinLiverpool,Utahand CapeTown, steppedintofundtheplayers’ newlook.

Anthony Godfrey, Academy Director at 7 Elite Academy, said, “I am absolutely delighted to support AFC Telford United’s pan-disability football team and help them toplayfootballacrossthecountry.

“The AFC Telford United Foundation is working hard in the local community and helping people to enjoy football, form friendshipsandcreatenewopportunities.

NewSafeguarding CampaignLaunchedto ProtectGrassrootsFootball

AcrossShropshire

Shropshire FA has launched a new safeguarding campaign aimed at strengthening protection across the grassroots football community, givingindividualsaclear, confidentialandanonymouswaytoreport abusebothonandoffthepitch.

Fully funded and supported by business partner SEAH, the initiative introduces an innovative reporting system designed to remove the barriers that can prevent people from speaking up. The system is accessed via QR codes displayed on durable printed key rings, which are now being distributed across grassroots football environmentsthroughoutthecounty.

The campaign recognises that safeguarding concerns do not always arise during a match and that individuals may need time, privacy, and reassurance before coming forward. By offering a reporting system that is available at any time, the initiative ensures support is accessible whenever concerns arise, including incidents of physical, verbal, emotional or discriminatoryabuse.

Sam Griffiths, Shropshire FA’s Designated Safeguarding and Workforce Officer and lead on the campaign, emphasised the importance of trust within local football communities.

“Weknowthatreportingabusecanfeel intimidating, particularly at grassroots level where communities are close-knit. This campaign is about reassurance, lettingpeopleknowtheirvoicematters, that concerns will be taken seriously, handled sensitively and acted upon appropriately,”shesaid.

Shropshire FA Chief Executive Andy Westonaddedthatthecampaignmarks asignificantstepforwardforthegame acrossthecounty.

“Creatingasafe, inclusiveandenjoyable environment is fundamental to the future of football. It’s vital that people can report concerns without fear of repercussions. This campaign strengthens trust and helps ensure everyone involved in the game feels protectedandsupported,”hesaid.

By simply scanning the QR code, players, parents, coaches, officials, volunteers and spectators are taken directly to a secure reporting platform where concerns can be logged quickly and discreetly. The option to remain anonymous ensures individuals feel safe, supported, andreassuredthroughoutthereportingprocess.

Speaking about the importance of the campaign, Natalie Pietrzyk, Managing Director of Telford-based SEAH, highlighted the collective responsibility to safeguard the game at grassroots level.

“Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility, and we’re proud to support a campaign that provides a clear, safe, and confidential way to report concerns. By making reporting accessible and anonymous, we hope more people will feel empowered to speak up and help protectthoseinvolvedingrassrootsfootball,”shesaid.

The safeguarding campaign reinforces ShropshireFA’songoingcommitmentto welfare, inclusion and best practice across the grassroots game. With the support of SEAH, safeguarding is being made more visible, accessible and embedded into everyday football environmentsacrossShropshire.

Clubs and leagues are encouraged to actively support the campaign by displaying QR codes, distributing key ringsandcontinuingopenconversations aroundsafeguardingandrespect.

WHY FEBRUARY’S HEART MONTH HITS HOME FOR SHROPSHIRE FOOTBALL

This February, football across the country is coming together for a causethatreachesfarbeyondthepitch.

As Heart Month shines a spotlight on cardiac health, Shropshire Football Association is proud to stand alongside the British Heart Foundation (BHF) as its chosen charity, backing a powerful message:whenitcomestosavingalife, everyminutetrulymatters.

That one-minute delay carries a powerful message: swift action saves lives.

EFL Chief Executive Trevor Birch described the initiative as “a simple, powerfulreminderthatswiftCPRcanbe thedifferencebetweenlifeanddeath.”

Tom Lockyer: “What Happened to Me CanHappentoAnyone”

The campaign is fronted by Bristol Rovers defender Tom Lockyer, now a BHFambassador,whoknowsfirst-hand howquicklyeverythingcanchange.

“What happened to me can happen to anyone, anywhere, atanytime,”Lockyer said.

“Every year, more than 40,000 people in the UK suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, and most of them never makeithome.

The initiative forms part of the ‘Every Minute Matters’ campaign, led by the EFL in partnership with Sky Bet and the British Heart Foundation,andwillimpact36matchesoverfourdays.

Throughout February, the campaign urgesfanstolearnCPRusingtheBHF’s free online tool, RevivR, empowering people to act if the unthinkable happens.

Shropshire FA and the British Heart Foundation

In 2024, Shropshire FA committed to training its staff and members of the grassroots football community in CPR, while fundraising for the British Heart Foundation.

The funds raised help the BHF support life-saving research into heart and circulatory diseases, including heartattacks, strokesandvasculardementia, aswellas the risk factors that cause them, such as diabetes and highbloodpressure.

TheHeartBehindthe Game:Celebrating FootballMomsinOur Community

When you think about grassroots football, the image that often comes to mind is of kids and muddy pitches, cheering crowds and the thrill of every goal. But behind every young player is a story of dedication, support and love - often provided by the unsungheroesofthegame:thefootballmoms.

This Mother’s Day, 15th March, we want to shine a light on the women who make grassroots football possible. These are the moms who cheer from the sidelines, drive the team to matches, organise snacks, manage schedules and somehow juggle it all while encouraging their children to follow their dreams. Their contribution goes beyond the pitch; they are mentors, cheerleaders and role models, helping to shape not just athletes, but young people who learn teamwork, resilience andpassion.

Being part of a grassroots football community comes with its own joys and challenges. Moms share the triumph of every goal, the heartbreak of a missed opportunity and the camaraderie of a tight-knit team. They witness firsthand how football teaches life lessons: perseverance, collaboration and thevalueofshowingupforeachother.

We want to hear your stories. How do you support your childrenandtheteam?

Players from Shifnal Girls FC took part in an engaging and informative CPR training session recently, thanks to Zoe from the British Heart Foundation (BHF). The session gave the girls vital lifesaving skills while keeping things fun, practical and memorable.

Bethany, aged 14 from the Under-14s, explained how the training helped her remember the correct technique. “When the song started, I remembered to move to the beat. To keep my cushion dry I used a bag and drew on it, so it looked like a real person.Hopefullyitwouldkeepsomeonealive,”shesaid.

Amelia, aged 11, also found music helped her stay on track during compressions. “‘Staying Alive’ would help me to do compressions to keep someone alive. It was wet but fun,” she laughed.

Neveah, 12, said the session boosted her confidence. “I remember how to do CPR now and found it really useful,” she said.

Annabelle, also 12, thoroughly enjoyed the experience and is already thinking about the future. “I feel happy to do it on anyone–especiallyasIwanttobeaparamedic,”shesaid.

Grassroots Football Partnerships

Why Purpose Is the New Game Changer

The world of sport sponsorship and brand activation is undergoingaseismicshift.

Brands are no longer content with simply slapping their logo on a stadium hoarding or a player’s kit and hoping for maximum impressions. Today’s landscape demands more - more meaning, more impact, more purpose. As fans become increasingly value-driven, brands must pivottowardscampaignsthatprioritisesocialimpact.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the grassroots sports space, where the emotional and cultural stakes areattheirhighest.

Football at its core has always been about more than just winning. On local pitches across the UK, grassroots football brings kids, parents, coaches and volunteers together in ways that go far beyond sport. It’s here, in muddy boots and on community sidelines, that the game shapescultureandbuildsfutures.

TheRiseoftheSociallyConsciousFan

Supporters today aren’t passive spectators. They’re engaged, connected and deeply invested in the issues that shape both their communities and the game they love.

From inclusivity and mental health to tackling racism and climate action, fans expect the clubs and brands involved in grassroots football to stand for something real. In fact, research shows more than 70% of UK sports fans believe sponsorship should promote positive social change - a figure that rises even higher among Gen Z andMillennialfans.

For grassroots football, this isn’t just a trend; it’s a cultural shift. Families now expect action, not just advertising.

WhyPurposeWorks-ForFootballandforBrands

Cause-led parentships and sponsorship aren’t just good forthegame-butgoodforbusiness.

Here’swhy:

Authenticity builds trust - Communities know when brands are serious and when they’re faking it. Supportingrealissuesearnslong-termrespect. Purpose sparks engagement- Stories rootedinvalues are the ones people talk about and share, both locallyandnationally.

Stand out in a crowded market - With so many brands chasing visibility, purpose-driven sponsorship cutsthroughthenoise.

Inspire from the inside out - Employees, volunteers and partners want to be part of something meaningful. Purpose energises teams as much as fans.

HowBrandsCanDeliverPurposeinGrassrootsFootball For those ready to step onto the grassroots pitch with realintent, afewprinciplesstandout:

Listen first: Ask players, teams, referees and families about the challenges they face. Build campaigns with them, notjustforthem.

Partner wisely: Work with governing bodies, leagues andcharitieswhoalreadyhavetrustontheground. Think beyond matchday: Legacy projects - from workshops to online resources -leave an impact long afterthefinalwhistle

BeyondSponsorship:ASharedResponsibility

For brands, the lesson is clear: don’t just show up with a badge. Roll up your sleeves, step into the community and make a lasting difference. Because when football sponsorship moves beyond visibility and into real impact, everyone benefits - the players, the clubs, the fans and thesponsorsthemselves.

SHROPSHIRE FA LAUNCHES NEW BUSINESS PARTNER BROCHURE

A GAME-CHANGING OPPORTUNITY TO BACK GRASSROOTS FOOTBALL AND COMMUNITIES

The Shropshire FA is proud to unveil its brand-new Business Partner Brochure, presenting a powerful invitation to businesses and organisations that want to invest in more than just sport - but in community, inclusion and opportunity.

With over 13,000 players, 170 clubs, 1,000 teams, and 6,000 dedicated volunteers, Shropshire FA is the beating heart of football in the county.

But its impact goes far beyond the pitch.

Backed by a mission to improve lives through football, the newly launched brochure offers bespoke partnership opportunities that deliver not only high visibility but also lasting social impact.

“This is more than sponsorship – it’s about shaping the future of football in our communities,” says Andy Weston, CEO at Shropshire FA.

“We’re offering organisations the chance to be part of something powerful, authentic and deeply rooted in Shropshire life.”

A Responsible Investment in People and Place

The Business Partner Brochure outlines meaningful ways for organisations to demonstrate corporate social responsibility (CSR) while aligning with one of the region’s most accessible and values-driven sporting bodies.

Partners will be directly supporting:

Youth development programmes that nurture life skills, resilience and leadership.

Disability football initiatives that champion inclusion and opportunity.

The Opportunities That Go Beyond

Partnership options include:

Volunteer and referee training, helping grow a sustainable, skilled grassroots network.

Facility development, ensuring safer, more welcoming environments for all.

Exclusive naming rights for competitions and county-wide initiatives.

Targeted exposure through events, digital campaigns and community outreach. Participation in landmark events like County Cup Finals and the Annual Grassroots Awards.

Hospitality packages and national football experiences that bring tangible value back to your team.

Driving Measurable Impact

As part of its bold 2024–2028 Strategy, and looking ahead to its 150th anniversary in 2027, Shropshire FA is focused on increasing its impact in local communities. With a current £128 million estimated social return on investment, the evidence is clear: football changes lives.

Now, businesses have the chance to become part of a legacy that blends purpose with performance.

Join the Movement

By becoming a Shropshire FA Business Partner, you’re not only gaining exposure -you are investing in community wellbeing, youth empowerment and inclusive opportunity across the county.

SAFEGUARDING 2032 WITH SAM

For all safeguarding queries contact Sam Griffiths, Shropshire FA Designated Safeguarding Officer sam.griffiths@shropshirefa.com

2025 HAS BEEN A REMARKABLE YEAR FOR SAFEGUARDING AT SHROPSHIRE FA.

We were honoured to be shortlisted in the County FA Recognition Awards and delighted to be named runners-up in the Special Recognition category for our continued commitment to safeguarding across the county.

Over the past year, we’ve strengthened our approach through new and meaningful partnerships. One key development has been our collaboration with West Mercia Police, enabling us to offer Club Welfare Officers enhanced training opportunities and additional layers of support. None of this progress would be possible without the dedication of our club officials. Your commitment ensures that football in Shropshire remains a safe, inclusive and enjoyable environment for children and all participants. We are sincerely grateful for everything you do.

As we head into Christmas and the New Year, we hope you all enjoy a well-deserved break.

Take time to rest, recharge, and make special memories with your loved ones - and please remember to look after yourselves too.

Your wellbeing is vital.
